So Morning Rise to Light Us -- Sneak Peek

Hehehe, here's a tiny peek at my piece for the Milgram Confidential Files Zine (@milgramcf). All of the artists and writers have put together awesome work in it, and there's going to be cute merch too :D It's a nonprofit zine -- proceeds will be donated to the Trevor Project! Preorders start in April, I hope you give it a peek :3

I've got a little cast-wide character study focusing on the prisoner's morning routines. It'll be featured with lovely art from @sequoiareachesforthesky!

You are always, always talking about yourself. 

It doesn’t matter how willing or withdrawn one may be. The way someone dresses, the way they hold themselves, the way they act, the way they don’t: everything speaks. 

It’s impossible to avoid these self-informants. Es used this to their advantage. They didn’t think Jackalope’s promise of vague videos would be enough to complete a murder investigation, and in a way, they were correct. The prisoners found other ways to talk about themselves. 

Es studied them while they ate their meals, conversed in the common area, or passed whispers between the cell bars at night. They watched the developing friendships and fast-approaching fights. They noted what made the prisoners smile. What made them flinch.

But even in the most basic, mundane moments – ones that Es would never think of watching so closely – the prisoners never stopped speaking about themselves.

“I… I like that toothpaste b-better.” Haruka pointed across the sink. “Koto-k-kotoko, could you, um!”

“Huh? Here, you can use it.”

Before any verdicts were announced, before everything fell into chaos, the prisoners got comfortable with one another’s morning routines. The washroom filled with gentle chatter and running water. As requests arrived, product bottles filled up the counters.

Shidou and Kotoko arrived first, just after the early bell. Mahiru would greet each prisoner by name on her way to her favorite spot. Kazui used to be one of the earliest, but as time went on, he joined everyone around the same time Fuuta finally dragged himself in.

Here is a preview of my piece, inspired by the scene where Phoenix sings Old Souls in the spotlight!! :3

your art is like my dream style of artwork !! i love it sm - what program do you use and brushes/coloring for the look you achieve? sorry if you've been asked before! 🤍

hiii thank you so much!!!! i’m so flattered you like my work :’) my process is pretty simple and straightforward and grew from me doing everything possible to not have to shade or render (i am very lazy and only care about linework) i mostly use procreate on a very old ipad pro! for bigger pieces i often finish them in photoshop. i use a lot of brushes from True Grit Texture Supply, including free packs and a paid pack. i would highly recommend this website, i love their halftone and textured line brushes so much

and i’ll put a quick walkthrough of my process for anyone who’s interested under the cut!

so basically i start out with flat colors. this part is just coloring in the lines lol. its often different shades of beige that are all really close in tone/color but i kind of dig that look. i’ll exaggerate some to keep a bit of visual separation but only just enough so they don’t all blend together

and then i… shade? add texture? idk what to call this part. i take the default flat brush, make it very small, pick a color, then set the layer to multiply and make a million tiny tiny scribbles. direction sometimes matters but often i don’t really care and just go up and down. neatness isn’t really important

then you drop the layer opacity down to like 30-50%

then you add a shit ton of color correction layers because you didn’t think about lighting/color earlier and need to fix your mistakes. and VERY IMPORTANT is the noise layer that goes over everything. it helps even everything out. sorry to just jump to the finished piece also lol i’m not smart enough to do color theory im just winging everything until it looks kind of alright

and then you’re done! the lineart takes the longest time, then it’s just coloring inside the lines and scribbling and adding overlay layers. very easy breezy (does any of this make sense??????)

here are some other brushes i like/use a ton + a baby preview of a piece for a zine im in. if you’ve gotten this far please know i love you.

I can help you.” To his surprise, the king’s dour expression melts into a smile of his own, and he places a warm, heavy hand on Octavo’s shoulder. “I understand Hyrule has faced adversity in the past. We’ve had our share of wars and betrayal, but the peace we’ve forged from it is solid as iron!” He gives Octavo’s shoulder a little shake to punctuate. “I can’t begin to imagine the things you’ve seen, but you don’t have to fear any longer. Hyrule is well-defended, watched over by the gods themselves. We’ll rise to meet any threat that comes our way.” Despite Darius’s mollifying words, Octavo feels bile rise in his throat, hot and acrid. He knew this would happen, or something like it, be it rage or disbelief or cries of treason, but it makes it no easier to hear out loud. He swallows, forcing a sheepish grin onto his face. “Oh, I have no doubt your army could stand against any regular foe, but this is… You must understand that has never stopped Ganon before. Hyrule needs more than manpower, it needs to match his supernatural strength, and I can-”  “Come, now,” Darius cuts him off, gentle but firm. “This isn’t the sort of talk we need to be having before a party, is it?"

High In The Tower: A Fantasy Kunigiri Zine

Kunigiri fans, we're eating good this month 🧡❤️

High in the Tower is a free, digital Kunigiri zine with fantasy as its overarching theme, dropping on Saturday 23th November. I wrote a piece for it called Katabasis, in which a certain hero seeks a hermit's help to enter the underworld after his princess's untimely passing. It's a mashup of Greek and Japanese folklore with loss and longing at its core.
