still thinking about the brainrot that fast fashion has caused in people, like i made this pair of pants that are black and white with a cool flowery design, and an acquaintance saw them and said "wow i'd pay like 20 dollars for you to make me a pair" and i could barely think with how utterly horrified i was at that; i told them that 20 dollars wouldn't even cover the materials, let alone the hours of work that went into cutting, sewing, ironing, hemming, altering, etc. they just had this look on their face when i told them that, when i said i wouldn't make them a pair for even 100 dollars because that was still way too low of an amount, a look that said "you're crazy for thinking that those cost 100 dollars" and maybe i am crazy but holy shit, 20 dollars for a pair of handmade, durable, lined pants fitted specifically to your measurements? 20 dollars for upwards of 60 hours of work? 20 dollars for several yards of high-quality fabric, thread, and buttons? 20 dollars???

something I don’t see people bring up a lot when talking about worldbuilding, especially when you’re creating cities, is wind. prevailing winds in many places in the northern hemisphere blow from west -> east, and because industrial production tended to take place in the centre of cities, workers would live downwind of factories while the wealthier classes would live on the other side, away from air pollutants, which is why a lot of cities have a poor east-end and a rich west-end, a spatial configuration that persists in many places that are now post-industrial
and in general the built environment has a durability to it that persists far past the historical moments that produce those configurations. this means that the stated aims of a city via a vis city planning are frequently at odds with the physical layout of the city itself. so if you want to create a city that feels like it has a long history to it, working through its earlier stages of production can help with decisions you make about its layout, and also allow for weird spatial contradictions in a city that has to constantly fight against its own physical history

Today marks a momentous occasion for the sfth fandom. Why?
WE FINALLY HAVE CANON AO3 RELATIONSHIP TAGS!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's still a lot of work that needs to be done (non-canon tags don't redirect to the canon tags, there still aren't that many canon relationship tags, most tags are still sorted under the Beetroots & Murder fandom, etc.) but this is still a big milestone!
This also means that formatting tags is so much more important, and I might make another post detailing the ao3 tagging conventions (I mentioned some of it in my sfth ao3 tagging guide but it can't hurt to go more into detail :])

people with epilepsy: would you be willing to tell me what your preferred way of tagging for flashing lights is? like, 'cw flashing' or just, 'flashing lights' or something? because i'm not sure and i'm also not entirely sure how dangerous flashing lights through a screen can be, so don't want to risk getting it wrong

Irish, Welsh and Scottish Gaelic speakers, I need your help! 🇮🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
For a piece of academic writing I am working on right now, I was wondering if in the context of those three languages, you have positive or negative examples of:
1) The presence of non-standard dialects digitally or in the media (any content creator you know, any regular speakers on the radio that actively uses a non-standard dialect, or on the contrary, you only encounter standard Irish/Welsh/Gaelic. If you have any example of non-standard writing too, for example in the printed press, I am all ears)
2) Do you speak and/or write a non-standard dialect and have been looked down upon for it by other speakers? If yes what dialect and in what context
3) What do you think about purification practices in which loan-words from English are replaced by new words? Which words do you use? If you study the language formally, which are taught to you?
Thank you, and please reblog!
- A grateful Celtic student

I think my ideal fandom experience is just to log back in every six months, post about the most niche ships I can imagine and then leave again.
With that being said: The world's most hopeless cop falls for two people who cannot keep a job or avoid being murder suspects. I think they would have fun together. I think their relationship would be utterly incomprehensible to anyone else. I think Maggey and Larry literally cannot go anywhere together without finding a body. Good times.

'Tieflings reach adulthood at about the same age as humans but are longer-lived, with the eldest members of the race living to be 150 years old.' - Planar Handbook
Technically, on Toril tieflings explicitly have human lifespans, but hey, you're not obligated to use that. Give your planetouched half-elf lifespans. (If you want).
...
'Tieflings look human (and are roughly the same height and weight as members of that race), except for one or two distinguishing features related to their unusual ancestry. Some examples of these features include small horns, pointed teeth, red eyes, a whiff of brimstone about them, cloven feet, or red skin. No two tieflings look alike. [also feathered shoulders, scales, no reflection, no shadow, skin is hot to the touch, red or blue skin, skin being freezing to the touch, white hair and deer antlers, glowing eyes, iridescent hair, weird magic powers, wings, control over specific animals, cat eyes, more or less than five fingers, and and and...]'
*insert the regularly scheduled bitching about the standardised portrayal of tiefling appearances in recent editions (and frankly, video games; I blame you, David Gaider) here*

ghost of shackleton bailey telling me the solution to ebooks and print books having different page numbers is to make a concordance and then to also come up with my own worse page numbering system that has to be checked against the concordance for anyone to ever actually find anything

Can't wait to write the romantic interactions between MC and RO(s) without touching. Just expressing affection/interest without ever kissing/touching/hugging. Perhaps brief brushes over the clothes, but in general flirting (in pre relationship stage) and loving (in relationship stage) in other ways.
On the other hand I also can't wait to write romantic interactions that don't need words but only comforting, meaningful contact. With a touch starved MC that gets all the love they need without feeling needy or uncomfortable or embarrassed. Casual touches, flirting touches (still, comforting rather than flustering), long lasting needed contact without words.

now that i think abt it, i think the reason im always a bit eyeroll-y at the adoption of 'Violet' as a name for Holmes' mother purely based on its repetition as the name of a few clients is that actually it would be a very sweet and clever move for Watson. He's the one writing and choosing pseudonyms!! Why would it be Holmes' relative that gets a tribute??
