Decoding ISO 14001 Requirements: Clause 6.1.2 Environmental Aspects
Is your company preparing to implement the ISO 14001 requirements? Then you may have heard the term “environmental aspect.”
ISO 14001 requires organizations to define the scope of their environmental management system. This includes determining the company’s environmental aspects and associated environmental impacts.
But do you know what environmental aspects mean? Or what are the ISO 14001 EMS requirements specifically for environmental aspects?
If you don’t, then today’s blog is for you!
So, dive into the following section and learn everything you need to know about environmental aspects and their requirements per ISO 14001.
Decoding ISO 14001 Requirements: Clause 6.1.2 Environmental Aspects
So, what is an environmental aspect?
Environmental aspects are elements of activities, services, and products of an organization that interact with the environment. Examples of environmental aspects include emissions, energy use, waste, water consumption, water discharge, and use of natural resources. The interaction can be periodic, in emergencies, or continuous.
Furthermore, when these aspects lead to changes to the environment it’s called environmental impacts. These environmental changes can be beneficial or adverse, such as air pollution or biodiversity loss.
ISO 14001 Requirements for Environmental Aspects
ISO 14001 requirements recommend organizations determine the environmental aspects they can control and influence and their environmental impacts.
The standard suggests taking a lifecycle approach and considering the following factors when determining environmental aspects.
Change, including new developments, planned changes, modified or new activities, and product or service changes,
Abnormal conditions and foreseeable emergency situations.
ISO 14001 certification requires organizations to determine the aspects that can have a critical environmental impact. The standard also demands organizations to communicate the aspects among various functions and levels in the organization.
Furthermore, your organization is responsible for maintaining documented information on its environmental aspects and associated impacts, criteria used to determine the aspects, and significant environmental aspects.
The ISO 14001 Requirements for Environmental Aspects: What Else Should You Know?
Besides the official ISO 14001 requirements for environmental aspects, there are a few more things you should know:
The environmental impact can occur at global, regional, and local scales. It can be indirect, direct, or cumulative.
The life cycle assessment for determining the environmental aspects does not have to be extremely detailed. You can simply assess the life cycle stages that your organization can control or influence, such as raw material acquisition, production, final disposal, and design.
Furthermore, your organization does not have to consider each component, product, or raw material individually to evaluate their environmental aspects. You can group or categorize products, services, or activities that have common characteristics.
When determining the environmental aspects, you can consider the organization’s:
Emission to air
Release to water
Releases to land
Use of natural resources and raw materials
Use of energy
Energy emitted
Use of space
Generation of waste or by-products
In addition to the environmental aspects your organization can directly control, the standard requires you to determine the aspects you can influence. This can be related to services and products used by your organization or offered to others, like outsourced processes.
To meet these requirements, you shall consider environmental aspects related to the products, activities, and services, such as:
Design and development of products, services, processes, and facilities
Acquisition of raw materials
Manufacturing or operation processes, like warehousing
Maintenance and operation of facilities, assets and infrastructure
Practices and environmental performance of external providers
Product transportation, packaging, and service delivery
Storage, end-of-life treatment and use of products
Waste management, refurbishing, reuse, recycling, and disposal
While there’s no single strategy for detecting environmental aspects, the methods you use should bring you consistent results. Furthermore, your assessment criteria for environmental aspects should relate to the aspects and impacts, considering type, size, scale, exposure, severity, and duration.
Summing Up
So, are you ready to implement the ISO 14001 requirements for environmental aspects? Hopefully, this blog has helped you understand the rules and how to execute them in your organization. If you want to learn more about the requirements, refer to clause 6 of the standard and the guidance provided by Annex A of ISO 14001.

Press Release
Yakima, WA - Yakima Chief Hops (YCH) is pleased to announce completion of the Food Safety Systems Certification (FSSC) 22000 for the production facilities in Yakima and Sunnyside, Washington; and Mont Saint Guibert, Belgium. In addition to the FSSC, their newest facility in Belgium received its ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certificates for Quality and Environmental Management Systems.
The FSSC certification signifies that Yakima Chief Hops products are processed and certified as food safe. While hops are not a designated food product, YCH recognizes the need to exceed the minimum standard in accordance with the ISO standards they adhere to in service to brewery customers worldwide. “This certification shows our customers that we’re committed to producing products using food safe practices” says Missy Raver Sr. Vice President of Grower Relations and Quality. “The certification is recognized internationally and is accepted throughout industry supply chains, setting industry benchmarks for sourcing suppliers.”
In 2015 YCH became certified companywide after meeting all standards set forth by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Quality Management System (QMS). Maria Delgado, Food Safety Manager, adds that “ISO really focuses on quality and continuous improvement, and FSSC 22000 compliments the ISO standards nicely with additional rigorous food safety requirements.”
The goal to complete this process was set late in 2021, and the final certification issued was to the Belgium facility in June 2022, and both locations in Washington in December of 2022. The certification process entails a two-stage audit, and the preparation can typically take up to a year to complete. Yakima Chief Hops facilities finished the process in five months. “We were challenged by some existing physical limitations in our buildings but were able to produce solutions” says Elvira Romero Director of Global Quality Systems, whose team facilitated the audit preparation and implementation. “We had zero findings in our audits, a big accomplishment for our entire team!”
