The 3 Literacies of Modern Age
Review of the Trikirion of Communication:
Symboleracy, Numeracy and Techneracy
Tumblr media
The starting point is the phylogeny of communication because the educational topic I am going to address cannot even exist if there is no communication. We have to understand that all Hominins were communicating. Probably all Hominins after Homo Erectus included had some command of some articulated language, but only Homo Sapiens reached the comprehensive and sustainable command of the fully-articulated language, probably around 200,000 BCE.
The next great stage Is the development of representational and symbolic Inscriptions and paintings or engravings on all durable media available, rockface in caves, stone, bone, ivory, and tusks. This symbolic transcription of stories and experience, maybe some spiritual language accompanying some rituals, is the first form of writing seen as symbolic transcription and going back to 300,000 BCE with Homo Naledi, 100,000 BCE with Homo Neanderthalensis, and 50,000 with Homo Sapiens.
Syllabic and alphabetical writing only came around 3,500 BCE for Homo Sapiens. There might have been older cases, but archaeology has not yet covered the whole world for all types of symbolic inscriptions that could have led to symbolic phonetic writing. The next stage was the printing press which enabled mass education and mass communication.
The next stage is the digital age as the most advanced form of the mechanical development of oral and written communication, the latest development being Generative Artificial Intelligence. In this modern age, education has to shift completely from teacher-centered education to guided self-learning which is based on
The self-learner’s desires.
The self-learner’s choices.
Teamwork.
The freedom of expression, tolerance, and discussion, and the freedom of emotional intelligence.
Motivation.
No disruptive self-learners, only disruptive treatment of self-learners.
All tools available to all self-learners with NO restrictions.
Flexibility: top self-learners, average midway self-learners, students with special needs and differently-abled students, Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development, Guide-Coach-Teacher’s flexible self-learning.
Systematic recap and discussion of achieved self-learning at the end of each phase.
Multi-ism and Pluri-ism.
This article presents a globalizing vision of about 65 years of experience in education in many countries and many circumstances.
The main methodological procedure is to capture the phylogeny of what I am studying, meaning the inner logic and processing that makes all these phenomena sustainable: at every step in the development, the phenomena themselves produce the means and energy that enable the next step to emerge.
Language is a self-developing communicational tool, and communication itself is a self-developing behavioral competence.
Keywords: Phylogeny; Communication; Writing; Printing Press; Digital Age; Artificial Intelligence; Flexibility; Self-learning.

The Economics of Self-Publishing in India
Tumblr media
Self-publishing in india has transformed the landscape of the publishing industry, offering authors a viable alternative to traditional publishing houses. With the rise of digital platforms and print-on-demand services, aspiring authors now have the opportunity to bring their stories to life without the need for a literary agent or a publishing contract. However, before diving into the world of self-publishing, it’s essential to understand the economics behind it.
Self-Publishing
In the past, authors faced numerous barriers to entry when trying to get their books published. Traditional publishing routes often involved lengthy submission processes, rejection letters, and minimal control over the final product. Self-publishing, on the other hand, empowers authors to take matters into their own hands by overseeing every aspect of the publishing process, from writing to distribution.
Initial Costs of Self-Publishing
ISBN Acquisition
One of the first expenses that self-published authors encounter is the acquisition of International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs). These unique identifiers are essential for tracking sales and distribution channels and are typically required for each format of a book (e.g., paperback, e-book, audiobook).
Editing and Proofreading
Investing in professional editing and proofreading services is crucial for ensuring the quality and readability of a book. While some authors may choose to self-edit, hiring experienced editors can help catch grammatical errors, plot inconsistencies, and improve overall coherence.
Cover Design
Readers often judge books by their covers, making cover design a critical aspect of self-publishing success. Hiring a skilled graphic designer to create an eye-catching cover can significantly impact a book’s visibility and appeal to potential readers.
Formatting and Layout
Formatting a manuscript for various publishing platforms, such as Amazon Kindle or IngramSpark, requires technical expertise and attention to detail. Authors may opt to hire formatting specialists to ensure that their books meet industry standards and display correctly on different devices.
Distribution Channels and Associated Costs of Self Publishing
Print-on-Demand Services
Print-on-demand (POD) services enable authors to publish paperback copies of their books without the need for large print runs or inventory storage. Companies like Amazon’sKindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and IngramSpark offer POD services, charging authors a per-unit printing fee and a percentage of each sale.
E-book Platforms
Publishing e-books through platforms like Amazon KDP, Apple Books, and Smashwords allows authors to reach a global audience of digital readers. While e-book distribution eliminates printing and shipping costs, authors must navigate platform-specific royalty structures and marketing opportunities.
Audiobook Distribution
With the growing popularity of audiobooks, self-published authors can expand their reach by producing audio versions of their books. Audiobook distribution platforms like Audible ACX provide authors with royalty-sharing options and production services, albeit with upfront costs for narration and editing... Contiues reading

About the Book
The braid and the sari are the quintessential hairstyle and garment that women in India don every day. They are both texture and text. The braid—often kept long and styled with flowers (especially in South India) or lengthened with extensions (as in North India)—is a prized possession with both aesthetic and spiritual meanings. The sari is a length of untailored cloth material that has been the traditional everyday garb of Indian women for millennia.
Using the braid and sari as the framework and defining tropes that unify the collection, the poems of Memory Braids and Sari Texts: Weaving Migration Journeys carry the memory of independent India, which turned seventy-five in 2022. These verses draw from poet Pushpa Naidu Parekh’s distinct and entangled memories of migrant and diaspora experiences of journeying from India to the United States, the space of one homeland to another, spanning the inexplicable accruing of physical, emotional, and spiritual self and their many iterations. The braid and the sari both embody the draping of oneself and the unraveling of many selves.
Richly layered and textured, this poetry collection explores one woman’s vivid and sometimes muted memories of her life in India, her move to the US, and her diaspora experiences there.

A mandala is a geometric, circular design with a rich history spanning various cultures, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Native American traditions. It symbolizes unity, wholeness, and the universe's cyclical nature. Mandalas often represent spiritual concepts, reflecting the journey from outer experiences to inner consciousness. They embody cosmic order and balance, aiding in meditation, introspection, and personal transformation. Used in rituals, art, and architecture, mandalas foster spiritual growth and serve as tools for self-discovery. The intricate patterns invite contemplation, leading to a deeper understanding of the self and the interconnectedness of all things.
Beginner's guide to mandala art
Creating mandala art can be a fulfilling and soothing endeavor, even for beginners. Here's a simple guide to get you started:
Gather Supplies: Gather paper, compass, ruler, pencils, erasers, and colored pens or pencils. Start with a blank canvas or printed mandala template.
Centering: Use a compass to draw a circle. This is your starting point, representing unity and wholeness.
Divide the Circle: Use a ruler to draw lines across the circle, dividing it into sections like a pie. These lines act as guidelines for your design.
Design Elements: Begin with simple shapes like circles, triangles, and squares. Add patterns and lines within each section.
Symmetry: Mandala art is known for its symmetry. Whatever you draw on one side, replicate on the opposite side to maintain balance.
Patterns and Details: Experiment with intricate patterns, dots, lines, and curves. Let your creativity flow as you fill each section.
Coloring: Once your design is complete, add colors. Choose a harmonious color scheme or let your intuition guide you.
Relax and Enjoy: Creating mandalas is meditative. Focus on each line and curve, letting your mind relax.
Digital Tools: You can also use digital tools for creating mandalas. Many apps and software offer symmetry features for easy design.
Practice: Don't be discouraged if your first attempts aren't perfect. Mandala art improves with practice. Embrace imperfections as part of the process.
Mindfulness: Engage in the process mindfully. Let go of expectations and enjoy the act of creating.
Personal Touch: As you gain confidence, add personal symbols or elements that hold meaning for you.
Remember, there are no strict rules in mandala art. The journey is as important as the final creation. Allow your creativity to flow and explore the calming and meaningful world of mandalas at your own pace.

Kabir 1008 Vani -- A Sant Mat Book of Ethical Precepts
A Book of Sant Mat Ethics: “Kabir 1008 Vani” — One of the Most Important Books of Kabir
Serving, Helping Others During This Life: "The advantage of being in the human mode of existence lies in giving and serving only, i.e. helping others as much as possible. Because, possibly you will not get this body [human form] again. This time you have been given this body, and so do not hesitate; serve others and that is all." (Guru Kabir, Saakhi Granth of Kabir, 1008 Kabir Vani)
“Love is like a deep sea. Only that lover (of God) who will dive into it fearlessly shall be able to get the pearl of ultimate happiness in it. And one who will not be able to muster up enough courage to dive into it, shall remain sitting at the beach. He will remain without love in this world. How will he get the pearls of ultimate happiness then?” (Kabir 1008 Vani)
"This mind is like an intoxicated elephant. It needs goading with the goad of pure thoughts, so that it gets rid of worldly desires and drinks nectar of spiritual self control... The imaginations of the mind are just as innumerable as the innumerable waves of an ocean. If somehow this mind can become quit by itself, attainment of true knowledge like diamond will become easily accessible (everyman in this world is sad and restless because of lack of knowledge. This true knowledge can be attained only when the mind becomes quit.)" (Kabir 1008 Vani)
A Wonderful Book to Consult: 1008 Kabir Vaani, Selections from the Sakhis, a Book of Ethical Precepts of Kabir: Read Online (scroll down the page to download PDF): https://archive.org/details/1008KabirVaani/page/n5/mode/2up
Book Review: Kabir 1008 Vani by James Bean Kabir 1008 Vani — Nectar of Truth and Knowledge Essence of the Collection of Saakhis (the Saakhi Granth of Guru Kabir) in Simple Language and Style Compiled by Lalchand Doohan Jigyasu
Translated into English by Kunwar Anil Kumar
Genres: Ethics, Genuine Ethical Foundation of Spirituality, Morality, Principles, Wisdom, Sant Mat, Kabir Panth, Meditation, Bhakti (Love and Devotion),
This is one of the most important books of Kabir to have. Kabir 1008 Vani is a very beautiful and impressive book of ethics and wisdom featuring 1008 sayings of Kabir, one of India’s greatest Masters and poet-mystics, who lived in northern India around six hundred years ago. As with Rumi, the Persian Sufi poet, in recent years Kabir has also become increasingly popular in the West. A few decades ago, the only translations of Kabir were, “Songs of Kabir” by Rabindranath Tagore published in 1915, and Robert Bly’s 1971 paraphrase or “versions” of Kabir, which were also based upon Tagore’s translation. These days however, there are literally hundreds of books available in the English language exploring the poetry and teachings of Sri Guru Kabir Sahib. The Saakhis (a term for a certain kind of poetic composition, a couplet giving testimony of eternal truths) are often used in the satsangs (spiritual gatherings in the name of Eternal Truth) of many spiritual paths based in India. It makes a great deal of sense that spiritual teachers would give satsang talks based upon the Saakhis of Kabir, as they are brimming with wisdom about how to integrate spiritual principles into one’s daily life. Kabir was critical of religious hypocrisy, going through the motions of outward rites and rituals without sincerity of heart. His path was that of Bhakti, meaning, love and devotion for the Beloved Supreme Spirit. For Kabir, the true church, mosque, or temple is within the body, within the human heart. The theme of the Saakhis is bringing all levels of our existence, more and more with each passing day, in body, speech, emotions, and thought, into harmony with the soul or spirit inside.

The starting point for this two-part catalog is the collection of 'Sits and printed cotton from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries' of the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden. This is actually the exhibition catalog, part 1.                          This shiny, hand-painted cotton fabric from India was used extensively in clothing and interiors in Friesland. It describes how the east-west relationship influenced the development of the motifs and how sit and European printed cotton were used in these periods in Friesland for men's, women's, children's and puppet wear and interiors. The Hindeloper costume receives special attention. Painting techniques used for the site are treated. This self-contained book contains drawings, photos (color and black-and-white), a glossary and a literature assignment. Cover shows in color a detail of a piece sits.

@sassymcgonagal1651
yeah I’m so sorry about that. I wish I could do something about it.
There is a way to adjust book prices internationally, but there’s no way for me to sell outside Europe and North America without selling books at a loss. And Amazon will literally not let me do it otherwise they wouldn’t be able to take their cut. India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, even fucking Canada and Mexico, etc. where I do sell plenty of books take a staggering amount of money off the top of each book. Oftentimes when I sell books abroad, I’ll only see a few cents worth of income per title.
That’s just for ebooks by the way. Which is composed of two things: intellectual property, and electrons. That’s it; nothing more. But capitalism sucks, and tariffs on electrons are bullshit, so there we are.
Paperbacks have an even worse problem. The price is fixed to the ISBN, so unless there is a sale set by a retailer (I have no control over that), selling Receiver of Many for less than $19.99 USD is impossible.
I set the paperbacks to the lowest rounded-up-to-the-nearest-divisible-five-minus-1¢ price that I can get away with. That means I make less money on paperbacks than I do on ebooks, tbh. Companies like Amazon, and more importantly Ingram Press (Ingram is what allows me to sell in bookstores large and small like Kinokunya and Coastside) take a large percentage of paperback sales to cover production and shipping costs.
The ebooks have the same issue. I self-publish, which means I can take home a much larger percentage in royalties than if I went through a traditional publishing house: it was the leading reason why I self published in the first place. And self publishing means that I didn’t have to give away too many pieces of the pie or worry about going out of print, or the effects that piracy has on runs by traditionally published authors. And I get to keep the cost of my books relatively low. But that comes with its own set of issues: the unaffordability of translation services, audiobook services, and the constant overhanging threat of piracy.
In fact piracy has cost me something in low seven figure neighborhood, and that’s just the illegal downloads that have been tracked. I know there are fans in the distribution shadow of Eastern Europe and Russia who have read my books and that illegal downloading is the only way they can get their hands on it, but even discounting those traceable downloads, and discounting downloads by people who shouldn’t be reading my books at their age anyway *ahem*, that’s still income in the high six figures that I never received.
I’ve even considered opening a Patreon for anyone who did formerly pirated my books, enjoyed them, but now want to make a donation in lieu of the money they didn’t spend at that particular time for whatever reason they had.
Piracy puts the hurt on my family. Like most authors, I’m not well off. It’s a rarified handful of authors that make big money off writing.
I rent. I drive a used car. Most of my electronics are refurbished or second hand. I get books and dvds at library sales and clothes through bargain online retailers. I worry about how I’m going to afford to send my baby to preschool next year. Book piracy affects me in a meaningful way.
And even given all those factors, I would still price my books lower on the international market if I were able to do it because I believe in spreading my vision more than I believe in money. If chasing money was the most implant thing, I could have picked a dozen other career paths.
So I am so sorry that the boundaries of current publishing put my book outside your reach. I assure you that if there was something to be done about it, I would do it.

Beyond the Hallowed Sky
(2021) Ken MacLeod, 340pp, ISBN 978-0-356-51479-6
Lakshmi Nayak has invented a faster than light drive, though she does not know it yet. However, she does when she gets a letter seemingly from herself explaining how it works. Yet the maths seems to work. She gives it to a senior colleague to check it out but he advises here to forget it as faster-than-light is impossible. Eventually, she decides to publish it as a flying-a-kite paper. This, though, attracts ridicule and soon she finds herself exiled from academia.
Where did this paper come from? Could it have come from her future self? After all, faster-than-light does imply (from a purely relativistic – non-quantum – perspective) time travel!
Time passes (in the usual, and not the time travel, sense) and then she gets an unexpected offer to build a starship using her principles.
Meanwhile, on a floating station above the clouds of Venus, a government android is on a mission to find out a rival alliance of nations' understanding of a new phenomenon on the planet's inhospitable surface.
In the meantime, an exploration team in caves on a distant world (exo-planet) makes discoveries of its own. There is some sort of intelligence there…
Beyond the Hallowed Sky is the start of a new, hard-ish SF space opera trilogy that grabs you from the off. And the backdrop involves some nifty world-building. We are two-thirds of the way through the 22nd century which is far enough away for there to be significant differences yet close enough that there are sufficient similarities that we might tenuously see how we got from where we are today to there.
Decades of turmoil had culminated in two shocks: the restoration of democracy in the US, and its establishment in much of Europe. There were essentially three groupings:  the Alliance consisting of the Anglosphere less Ireland and Scotland but including India;  the Union, comprising of much of continental Europe with Scotland and Ireland;  and the Co-ordinated States of Russia, China and some of their dependencies.
Yet these human groups were not alone in calling the shots: each grouping had a controlling artificial intelligence capable of much monitoring of citizens…
Trilogies can be tricky things. Each book has to be reasonably self-contained yet progress an overall plot arc, with the final wrapping everything up. This can mean that the middle book – being neither one or the other – is somewhat weak.
With Beyond the Hallowed Sky we do get an intriguing start that certainly holds the reader's attention. Perhaps there is not enough sub-plot resolution for this to work as a standalone but then again there is plenty making you to want to get the next one in the trilogy. What you do get is the bringing together of the build-a-starship, Venus and exo-planet strands, though there are plenty of questions left to be answered and issues to address.  Mercifully, Ken MacLeod does not write overly long books, so the reader does not feel cheated: you get more than enough bangs for your buck. This, and that the man has written a couple of trilogies before, somewhat deftly (most recently Dissidence, Insurgence and Emergence), means that I for one look forward to the two follow-ups. This is thoughtful SF with some great ideas, lightened with the occasional action to keep the blood pumping, and an interesting first contact set-up.  If you know MacLeod, you will be sold: you have this assurance that he is still on form. If you don't, and like the sound of this, then what are you waiting for?
