[Read] Howie&Artie (~P326)

Okay. I haven't been writing review ahem, not review, just thoughts about books i read because at some point i felt like finishing it in one go, moving to another, and like... it's so addicting. i read that i'm in a kind of a honeymoon phase when it comes to reading. lots i read, easily entertained, found the joy in everything. so... and i don't mind that.

so when i read this top review about this one book on goodreads, which, is offensively annoying, honestly. i hate reading snobby reviews, <-which i am lowkey doing right now, what the fuck, reviewing another revies?! well, whatever. rage is all-consuming. thing is, it's this specific way of reviewing that bothers me to no end. snobby, pretentious, all superior. book is an entertainment, get off your high horses! a picture attached somehow making me frustated. and also do not finish because of the spice being fade to black I WAS LOOKING FOR A NON-SPICY BOOK HELLO??!?!?!? WHY DOES EVERY ROMANCE BOOK HAVE TO INCLUDE SPICE!!! WHY YOU'RE RATING IT BAD BECAUSE IT'S NOT... TRYING WHAT IT'S NOT MEANT TO BE?!?!! i do love me some spice but like... i don't know, leaving a 2/5 because what a book visioned doesn't align to what you expected it to be (becuase you wished for it to be something else) is. not everything meant to be spiced!!! some is just sweet and fluffy! and that is okay!!! spicy is okay too!! but not every single thing has to be one thing you want it to be!!! augh!!! idk. it irks me. not that i can't do anything about it.

ACTUALLY I CAN. I READ THIS ONE PURELY IN SPITE. BECAUSE OF THIS ONE REVIEW. screw you. i finished it too. I MADE A POST ABOUT IT IN MY TUMBLR TOO. and what i get? hella cute story. reminds me of reading a shoujo, slice-of-life esque manga. or a shounen manga with the protagonist doing part-time job in a supermarket and most of the time the story centers around the protagonist and his work. (eg. hataraku maou sama, it's NOT SIMILIAR AT ALL. just gave me similiar vibes). also the humor. I get it. i don't... i don't really stick with the humor too, mostly because there's a heckton of references about pop cultures and stuff which i don't... get. but when it hits, it hits. i laughed a lot.

(now i am reconsidering writing this because... the last one i wrote about two male-leads being cute is ari&dante and that's several months ago), but oh well. this is june!!! happy... june... month. i love romance books. UM. i hope no one irl knows my tumblr💀

HOWIE!!! this guy irks me at the beginning because of the typical lame-shounen protagonist kind of traits. oggling over girls (though he did felt wrong, but he still do oggle), kind of a loser that masks his worries in what it seems like an attempt of funny jokes. you're funny! sometimes!! howie. basically... he applied to work at this one craft store, because he wanted to get laid. and his reason is even more lame. he thought guys that deals with arts is more sensitive and that's why he would suddenly be a male alpha that oozes attracting forces. so he thought. he's dumb and endearing...

the other lead is ARTIE!!! cold and distant at first. typical, but it doesn't took long for him to open up. and by that i meant stealing kisses... um. even in mangas, this tropes irked me so bad. what happened to consent... and idk how it is in other places maybe it's romanticized to no end and maybe it's just how it goes in other countries. idk!! i'm brought up very conservatively, okay. i have a very limited view of how it's usually meant to be. and add to that being in a mostly... idk... the country i live in isn't... really??? forget it. ARTIE!!! a top-student, achieving, members of the? orchestra? club back in high school. one thing leads to another that he ended up being the one to take care of this craft store instead. the store itself isn't doing well, considering there's a cheaper, better, alternative like Holly's. about his character instead, i find it refreshing that he's not the usual i'm out you're not so you need to get your shit up if we want to be together ASAP. which is!!! totally fair to everyone! im just so used to it being one of the main conflicts and sort of, idk, maybe felt like it gave me some vibes of something along like coming out before they're ready...

the dialogues (which takes like 80% of the story) is honestly the life of the book itself. and even when it's not, it's told in 1st POV in Howie's. and he usually went into this tangent of basically everything so. and it's amusing! the characters are also lively, though maybe it's a bit, very... how do i say this. stereotypic-ish... like there's this one main traits. The main craftstore-cast is a solid A+! mostly because howie's opening up to others outside of his usual clique and mother is very, joyful to read. He himself getting to know more about himself, being more open, being more happy in general too. howie himself is tackling with some issues outside of his newfound love interest and work buddies. his twin brother, who's studying pre-med, high-achiever, had a girl visiting town. his mother, who's been in a slump for two years because his dad passed away in an accident who she blames herself for. and his friends, amber and mitch!!

relatively speaking the scale of drama in this fiction isn't that... all-stake big. like, although it deals with deceased dad (and partner), and maybe tackling some stuff like insecurity and inferiority... the side cast is so... SO... LIVELY!!! kristy is lovely and cute and honest. cora is a cool and confident and bold and all!!! arthur is cold and distant and rather quiet and stoic at first. howie talks like in this kind of bro-like vibes and very manly and the resident i like girls one. the dynamics!!! THE DYNAMICS!!! HELLO!!! the way kristy sets up the two and her (and howie) ((and cora)) pretending not to know it gets me everytime because who are we lying to here guys? attending cora's show, artie's piano performance... and there's this one. this one time it's so fluffy. when howie visited kristy's place one time. she told him someone told him cute... i... words cannot put it into justice. and i'm not good with words. i'm just reminiscing it in my head because it's so cute. CUTE. AGH I LOVE CUTE BOOKS....

it's all felt lighthearted to me. it's warm, and, fluffy. okay, maybe there's some pages with unnecessary narration like lengthy text... and unfunny jokes. but when being lighthearted is the main charm of this book (to me, anyway), there's times when it doesn't lands and it's okay. doesn't take the other time when it does things to me. and maybe precisely because it's lighthearted... it doesn't deal with a more grounded or realistic challenges other... more... idk. dramas usually tackle. it can be a dealbreaker to others, and it's fine.

i'm engrossed.

by the time we're reaching some, i don't know. resolution phase of the book, i cried. mostly things happened with howie's mom. i don't know why i cried easily when it comes to family stuff, i cried too when it happened in ari&dante, and eleanor oliphant, and leonard peacock. and i read this book because of the romance too. so... i'm just saying there's more to the story and it touches me. ultimately, i felt like howie's and artie's became less of a focus but more of a bigger part of... howie's journey in feeling happier as the time goes. and... !@#$?13$!#$#:#!FKEIUG2321$?#!?!!!! i'm weak.

i don't remember how to review a book. this is just another tangent. and i know, i said i'm pouring it out of spite. but i liked the book! it's fun for what it is. it can be cute and fluffy one page, unhinged tangent the next one, and then numbingly touching the other.

oh shit anon i could spend days curating this answer D:THANK YOU FOR ASKING, i want to yell about my fav words all the time. all of these feature lgbt themes, most of them are by poc

books: - the broken earth trilogy by n k jemisin(today there was a woman in a book store complaining about fantasy and how it’s all the same and based on tolkien and i basically yelled at her to read this trilogy lol) the most impressive worldbuilding i’ve EVER read, so intricate and detailed. it’s brutal and it’s political and it’s stunning and shocking and moving. there’s a lot of wlw, there’s a trans woman as a very important secondary character and the most powerful (as in magic) and self-less person is a gay black man. (all characters are black or other ppl of color)- ari and dante by benjamin alire sáenzi was asked if i know a book that makes me feel at home and i didn’t even THINK before saying ari and dante. i could read this every month; there’s always something new to discover and yet you instantly feel familiar with the characters. - at nights it’s quiet in tehran by shida bazyarit is. written. so fucking. beautifully. all stream of consciousness but more accessible than virgina woolf etc. and all characters were extremely relatable to me which i almost NEVER feel. it begins with a man in iran who is part of the communist party before the revolution, then his wife once they’re in germany and have to adjust, then their eldest daughter who struggles to merge her experiences in germany and visiting the family in iran, then the son who struggles with his identity as a poc in general, and lastly the youngest daughter who is a lesbian :’)

- everfair by nisi shawlliterally, why do white men even still write fantasy/historical fiction when this book exists. again, beautifully written, politically powerful, wlw characters and fascinating mythology/magic.writers:- shida bazyarshe has only that one published book but honestly it knocked me off my feet, i can’t wait for what’s to come. (I don’t think it’s been translated tho, sadly) most german-persian authors are middled aged or older and even though their writing helped me understood my father and my history, i find it hard to relate to their characters. but SHIDA!! oh my god. i feel so seen.

- donna tartti mean.. DUH. she makes me cry in a single page, she hides these ABSURD happenstances in the most poetic writing (cocaine in the burger king parking lot everyone), she has these dumb, pretentious, miserable characters that feel way too relatable and all those issues between the protagonists and parental characters... my jam- benjamin alire sáenzHE! MAKES! ME! FEEL! AT! HOME! BUT! ALSO! FEEL! LIKE! SHIT! his adult fiction is sooo fucking painful to read and extremely triggering and so are his poems, but it’s so worth it. - oscar wildeDUH. my DAD. he SAVED MY LIFE. he genuinely was the reason for Me Having A Reason To Live. and just him as a person, as a persona, as an icon. (though, i am also aware of his flaws don’t worry)- audre lordei mean??? hello??? her poems?? her essays?? i learned so much from her and she has this LOVE for the world, for women, it’s so inspiring and soothing

This is one of my favorites. It has hockey, dumb college age boys who basically played gay chicken, only freak out when it gets too real and reunite years later when they are both professional players. And on opposite teams too.  

Cut and Run by Abigail Roux (Find Edits HERE and HERE and HERE )

this bad boy i just finished last week. And it was a roller coaster. It’s like a buddy cop movie, but 10X hotter. Zane and Ty are very different cops with very different styles who get paired together to try and stop a serial killer. So So much stuff happens in here, but their banter and them growing together is some good shit.  

Let the Wrong Light In by Avon Gale

OO this one kills me. The protagonist is so fucking snarky and bratty– even as he is an adult male working for an incredibly successful architecture firm. His boss is a world-renown stoic, asshole (or IS HE?). But they have… similar tastes… if ya know what I mean ;) but its discovered on accident and just- their journey is great.

Just a Bit Obsessed by Alessandra Hazzard

Look Christian and Alexander? Gah. So basically Alexander is an uptight, very straight, controlling dude. His girlfriend decides one day that she wants to spice up their relationship by having a threesome. Cue Christian. This is the second in the straight guys series (but you don’t need to read the first as its not the series best and they are all standalone.)

Just a Bit Wrong by Alessandra Hazzard

Honestly you will probably end up reading all of the series, but out of all of them, this is my favorite. Gabriel is a soccer phenom who just got an injury. To the world he’s a golden boy. To everyone who truly knows him, he is a spoiled brat. Then Zach is his new physical therapist who DOES NOT TAKE HIS SHIT. Their relationship evolving is literally one of the best things. and it’s very… hot. k bye!

Out in the Open by AJ Truman

Another couple of college boys in this one! Ethan is a shy, not necessarily boring, but reserved college Sophomore who is interested in the hipster, ultra cool Preston. He gets into a law class and accidentally sits down next to Greg who is the Fraternity golden boy. Greg and Ethan mouth off to each other and then basically mouth on to each other and shenanigans ensue. This one is great because there is a great discussion on college stereotypes and Slut-shaming all throughout the novel.

I... This book... Umm😳

So. This is another impulsive beginning of starting another book... I never knew about the existence of this novel two days ago. My sister asked me if I had another book to read, and, frankly, I said no because I still have several other thing to read and I’m a slow reader. But I looked of fiction titles anyway... Just some random keywords like ‘Novel about X�� or ‘Things to read about Y’ and stuff like that. And I’ve come across this one. 

IT’S ONLY 10 PAGES but i feel like the synopsis set me up for something exciting like... I LIKE IT... Mostly the bite-sized chapters so I can read it when I could and not forgetting which part of the chapter I’m in. So... Okay. Like, compared to the one book I read but I haven’t picked up again because I kept nitpicking about it (i see u hikkikomori chan from 2015...) BUT THIS ONE... ok. ok. ARGH. 

The first three chapters is what the early part of the introduction. Like, getting to know about our main protagonist, his relation with his family, upbringing and what bothers him. That’s mostly it. i love them ur honor. it’s so fluffy (as of now, bcs there’s probably angst and conflict later) but like the way characters is portrayed is soooooooo good. i am feeling things!!!! it’s making my heart warm!!!! and the tropes... opposites attract?????? two lonely peeps finding comfort in one another????? okay... OK??? HELLO...

uh... why do i feel so sad now. ari is having a fever and he’s sick and he started to have all this dreams which i don’t really understand because dreams are dreams but i feel like i’ll understand the more i read but IT HURTS. moving onto the second chapter i feel like the aspect of loneliness is going to be described more and it’s scary... i think.

i think summer break is over and supposedly they’re going to admit back to school? something about ari being happy to know even a tiny bit of his dad ‘being real’. so precious... love that there’s a lot of light dialogues, makes it seems like i’m intruding their conversation. also i said some stuff about liking opposites attract but i didn’t know they’re also going to put angst with that because... dante seems like the one to have everything (emphasis on seems because he has something going on too) while ari lowkey feels like he doesn’t compare and jealousy and stuff😔 i’m lowkey dumb about philosophy and like the deeper meaning so i’ll just read it as i read. NOT ANGST... PLEASE...

no one told me there’s going to be angst... and the trope of sudden “i will be moving abroad”... and the accident... and now that i’m almost 1/3rd of reading the whole book.... maybe i should take my time reading. BUT I CAN’T HELP IT....? i’m to engrossed in reading this ugh... i really liked ari and dante’s convo they make me laugh!! the repeated words in their convo. like. idk. it felt so endearing i don’t really know what else to describe. digging down to ari’s fear is scary because it’s kinda described in umm... a little bit too uncanny description, i guess? like okay... >_> 

this post is so messy lol i want to write a post about what i thought overall about this novel, but after i read it whole. so that it can be more better worded and i’m not interrupted every 20 minutes because the urge to read more lol
