i think rinniki if they got together would often be on the brink of breakup in the eyes of the world although they're usually actually fine between themselves, kind of like in canon when rinne in one story complained abt how niki broke up with him etc. i enjoy the idea of gossip mags reporting on them too and rinne keeping up with it; considering how he keeps an eye on in-universe social media to see what fans r saying...

The dim light of the bedside lamp bathed the room in a soft glow. Y/N sat cross-legged on the bed, her laptop resting in front of her, illuminating her face in harsh contrast. Her throat felt tight as her eyes scanned the comments section on yet another gossip website.

"Why is he with her?"

"She's way out of his league."

"Drew could do so much better. She's not even that pretty."

"She doesn’t look right next to Drew AT ALL."

The words blurred as tears pooled in her eyes, one spilling over and sliding down her cheek. She sniffled, trying to hold it together, but it was a losing battle. Her hands trembled as she closed the laptop and set it aside, curling up into herself. The voices in her head, fueled by the hateful comments, were deafening.

She knew Drew loved her. He told her all the time, in the little ways and the big ones. But sometimes, the weight of the world's opinions was too much to bear. Tonight was one of those nights.

She was so caught up in her spiraling thoughts that she didn't hear the front door open or the sound of Drew's voice calling out.

"Babe? I'm home!" he said, his voice warm and familiar as it carried through the apartment.

Her stomach dropped. She quickly wiped at her cheeks, trying to compose herself. The last thing she wanted was for him to see her like this.

Drew stepped into the bedroom, his tall frame filling the doorway. He smiled softly, holding up a bag. "I brought takeout from your favorite place. I figured—" He stopped mid-sentence when he noticed her blotchy, tear-stained face and glossy eyes. His brow furrowed with concern as he dropped the bag on the dresser and closed the distance between them in two long strides.

"Angel, what's wrong?" he asked, sitting on the edge of the bed and cupping her face in his hands. His thumbs gently wiped away the tears that continued to fall despite her efforts to stop them. "Talk to me, baby."

She shook her head, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's nothing, Drew. I'm fine."

He frowned, not buying it for a second. "That's not nothing. Come on, tell me what's going on."

Her chest tightened as she met his worried gaze. She debated brushing it off, but the dam broke, and the words tumbled out before she could stop them. "It's just... all the comments, Drew. All the things people say about me. About us. They hate me because I'm not what they think you deserve."

Drew's eyes softened, and he pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. She buried her face in his chest, her tears soaking into his shirt.

"They're so cruel," she continued, her voice muffled against him. "And the worst part is... I start to believe them. Maybe they're right. Maybe I'm not good enough for you."

Drew pulled back slightly, just enough to tilt her chin up so she was looking at him. His cobalt eyes were intense, his expression a mix of heartbreak and determination.

"Stop," he said firmly, his voice low and steady. "Don't you dare let those people make you feel like you're not good enough. They don't know you. They don't know us."

She shook her head, the tears still falling. "But Drew, look at me. I'm not some slim, perfect model. I don't fit the image of the kind of woman people expect you to be with."

Drew let out a frustrated sigh, running a hand through his hair before turning back to her. "Y/N, do you know what I see when I look at you?"

She stayed silent, unsure how to respond.

"I see the woman who makes me laugh harder than anyone else ever has," he said, his voice soft but unwavering. "I see the woman who listens to me when I'm struggling, who supports me no matter what. I see the woman whose smile lights up my entire day."

His hands moved to her shoulders, his thumbs brushing against her skin in soothing circles. "I don't care what anyone else thinks. I love you for you. For your kindness, your intelligence, your strength. For the way you hum when you're cooking, even though you always say you can't sing. For the way you light up when you talk about the things you're passionate about. You're the most beautiful person I've ever known, inside and out."

Her breath hitched as she listened to his words, the sincerity in his voice breaking through the walls she'd built around herself.

"You're more than enough for me, Y/N," Drew continued, his voice thick with emotion. "You're everything I've ever wanted. And if people can't see that, then screw them. They don't matter."

She let out a shaky laugh, her tears finally starting to slow. "You really mean that?"

He leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "With all my heart."

She looked up at him, her own heart swelling with love and gratitude. "I don't deserve you, you know that?"

He smirked, his hands sliding down to her waist. "I think it's the other way around."

The tension in the room shifted as his fingers traced slow, deliberate patterns on her sides. His gaze darkened slightly, a spark of something more than affection flickering in his eyes.

"I need you to understand how much you mean to me," he murmured, his voice dropping to a low, husky tone. "Let me show you."

Her breath caught as he leaned in, his lips brushing against hers in a tender, lingering kiss. It was a kiss that spoke of love and devotion, of promises made and kept.

He deepened the kiss, his hands moving to cradle her face as if she were the most precious thing in the world. She melted into him, her own hands finding their way to his chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heartbeat beneath her palms.

"You're so fucking beautiful," he murmured, his voice low and rough, the kind of tone that made her stomach tighten and her breath hitch. She blinked up at him, her lips parting slightly as if to argue, but he didn't let her. Instead, he leaned in, pressing his forehead against hers, his breath warm against her skin. "Don't say it. Don't say you don't see it. I'll show you."

His fingers trailed down her neck, feather-light, sending shivers rippling through her body. He shifted closer, his other hand finding her waist, pulling her into him until there was no space left between them. Her heart pounded as his gaze dropped to her lips, then lower, tracing the curve of her jaw, the dip of her collarbone, the swell of her chest. Everywhere he looked, she felt it—like fire licking at her skin.

"Drew..." Her voice trembled, barely above a whisper, but he silenced her with a kiss. Soft at first, almost questioning, as if he was giving her the chance to pull away. But when she didn't, when she kissed him back, something in him snapped. His hands moved with purpose, one cupping the back of her neck while the other slid down to grip her hip, holding her firmly against him.

He deepened the kiss, slow and deliberate, his tongue sliding against hers in a way that made her knees weak. She could feel the heat building between them, the way his body pressed into hers, hard and impatient. When he finally pulled away, she was breathless, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she tried to steady herself.

hiii!! excellent question id be more than happy to help! this will be sort of an overview with general recs for newlab beginners (why am I treating this like its a profession omg) so just lmk if you want more specific recs + I've highlighted my favs

books (from the outside)

(by from the outside I mean written by people not directly involved in newlab, so historians/journalists etc)

the two classic newlab texts are servants of the people and the end of the party, both by andrew rawnsley from the observer. provide nice, extensive but not overly fussy histories of newlab from opposition to 2010. good balance of gossip and actual information!

my personal favourite is rivals by james naughtie (bbc reporter), I find the prose in it far more compelling than any other book on this list.

brown's britain (robert peston) is also very good!

you've mentioned that you're not from the UK, so I really really really would recommend reading a book/a few articles on the broader history of the British Labour Party, just so you can understand why newlab was so revolutionary. I quite like keeping the red flag flying

the new machiavelli by jonathan powell is my absolute favourite self-written newlab book - and you might learn some stuff ant machiavelli whilst ur at it so this is an essential imo

my life our times by gordon brown is another one I really enjoyed, although it's less gossipy than some of the other books on this list. admittedly I do agree with basically everything gordon brown has ever said so this is a very biased review, but I would give it a go!

obviously alastair campbell wrote a load of diaries. I would be careful with which volumes you choose to get - go for the ones published 2010 and onwards bc he made the choice to omit stuff from the first few volumes he published so that it wouldn't' hurt gordon's premiership. also, they're really long and really extensive, so pick which volumes you want to read based on which specific period of newlab you find yourself drawn to!

as a comms/polling fan (boo) I really liked unfinished revolution by philip gould, but this might not be the best book to start with.

damian mcbride's power trip (more diaries) is also interesting

I found tony's books excruciating to read but that's bc im crazy and think I know the inside of his mind like its my own so they might be good for you. his new book is FASCINATING but only in the sense of it exposing how big his messiah complex is. don't read any of his books if you're not down to hear about sex and/or technology.

It's so true Broadchurch managed to create gay pining levels of 'let them kiss and confess their love and get married' except it's 'let them hug sometimes and say one nice thing to each other for every fifty mean things and be besties forever'. I completely understand this translating to wanting them to kiss because there is SO much tension and a love confession is a way to have a big release all at once. I don't think I'd even have hated it if they did! (although I'm glad they didn't). But in my heart there is no Moment of release there's just 20 years down the line when they're neighbors and retired from a long career of mutually enabled police malpractice, sitting on the porch and exchanging judgy gossip about passer-by. Being mean to each other is still their love language, but it's gone all soft around the edges and they smile to themselves and know without fear how important they are to one another. Shopping! These two have unique senses of style, and while Sae would probably prefer to get all his clothes online, he'll indulge Shidou and join him at a shopping centre for a date. Shidou enjoys modelling new outfits for his boyfriend's approval, and is more than happy testing out new skincare products with Sae. No comment on what they get up to in the changing rooms

I think they'd also enjoy self-care hang-outs—getting manicures or going to the spa together.

7. What’s the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other?

For Shidou, literally nothing. There isn't a thought in his head that he doesn't vocalise. He tells Sae immediately.

If Sae falls first, similar to Rin he has a crisis about whatever's happening to him: what the hell is the lukewarm feeling in his chest whenever he sees Shidou? Blech! It wouldn't influence his interactions with Shidou that much, but the eye rolling and protests against Shidou's antics became half-hearted.

The answer to this greatly depends on when Sae and Shidou get together. If it's right after the U20 match, then Sae's relationship with Rin will tank even further. Like, Shidou only just kicked Rin in the face... and Rin still resents Sae for picking Shidou over Rin to play alongside Sae against the Blue Lock 11. If they're older when Sae and Shidou become an item, Rin still won't be overjoyed—but he's less likely to actively daydream about shanking the pair of them.

Sae's parents have no clue what to make of Shidou, but they do their best to be supportive. If Sae's happy, then they'll try to accept Shidou. Although, his mom might privately complain to her husband about Sae dating the one guy that kicked the shit out of Rin 🫠

We know nothing about Shidou's family, but my sense is that nothing surprises them any more. They might appreciate Sae since he demonstrates a calming effect on Shidou... if they still have a good relationship with Shidou themselves.

No one from Blue Lock is surprised that Shidou has the hots for Sae, but the news that Sae reciprocates his feelings is a bombshell. It's hot gossip, but no one's brave enough to admit to Sae or Shidou's face that their relationship is a surprise.

22. Who cooks more/who is better at cooking?

I love domestic AU fics where Shidou can cook well and makes nutritious food for Sae 🩷 For that reason alone, I want to say Shidou for this. I don't think he's a exceptional chef or anything, but he puts more effort into learning techniques than the average adolescent. He's also really thrifty with ingredients and tries to minimise food waste.

Sae's a combini-fuelled kid like Rin IMO. He probably gets meals prepared for him at Réal, so he's only really capable of cup ramen levels of cookery. So the fact Shidou cooks is a big point in his favour when he and Sae get together.

the trend of people, all along the range of establishment dems to leftists, to call for trump to be replaced are so bizarre to me. like, yeah, i get the sentiment. we hate trump. he's a fascist and a liar and dangerous to democracy and yes, yes, yes agreed. but he is a WEAK candidate for the republican party.

up until this point we've had essentially a race to the bottom. biden should've sweeped trump, as an incumbent who did have some decent policies in motion, but he's a corpse who stans isnotreal and has an increasingly reactionary approach to immigration (this is something we NEED to push kamala on, btw). he also has historically low approval ratings, which has never rlly spelled out good news for incumbents.

well, okay, biden sucks, so trump should we sweeping him. well... sort of. trump, unlike biden, has a strong base of support. he has people who will only vote for him, while biden supporters are essentially just dem party supporters. the thing is though - much of his supporter base historically does not vote consistently. many of them don't believe in organized goverment at all, so they may not vote based on that.

but aside from that element, the bigger focus is the moderates. the people like my personal grandparents. white, wealthy, from the suburbs, lutheran, stans ronald reagan (named their boxer reagan). and trump freaks them out! they want normalcy. they want order. they're plenty racist, but they don't want an insurrection.

moderate voters are the ones you absolutely need to bag, regardless of party, and at the moment the dems (depending on how they move forward) could have a major advantage now that biden's out. they have a cop vs a criminal; a goofy laughbox vs a violent menace; a woman who connects with her stepchildren and seems happy with her husband vs the guy who called his own daughter hot and had the rnc commentators gossiping about his marriage. this is not a reflection of what matters to me personally, but rather of what generally matters to american voters. this dynamic is flimsy, because it takes work to push a narrative, and the dems have roughly a month til their convention, three til election day. they can push kamala and promote enticing policies, as long as they actually push kamala and promote enticing policies.

in addition, trump weirdly had a terrible pick for vp. jd vance is supposed to help trump's ticket appear less establishment, more in connection with the rust belt, but vance has been sucking up to the dems and pushing down his appalachian community for years.

and trump has maxed out on name recognition. it's pretty difficult for someone to not have a decently solid opinion on someone who has already been president for four years. red voters who know they don't like him - primarily moderates - can't really be all that psyched to vote him back into office.

now why, WHY, would we encourage the republican party to swap the trump-vance ticket for someone more competent, not so unruly and impolite? someone who can feign common decency, who can more effectively pretend to be better than they are?

please don't get sucked up in the "no you!" push, because (imo) that's all it is. it's just seeing the dems fuck up, be called out, then seeing the reps do the same thing, and wanting to call it out to get even. i don't think that's the move right now.

i think the move is to take the coconut pill for few months or so, pretend to get along, hope the dems do their part for once, and come jan 21st, we can go full throttle pushing kamala to fix everything.

oh, and vote august 6th!! multiple progressive state reps are up for re-election (shout out cori bush), as well as local reps and ballot measures. november 5th matters, but the next big one is only 2 weeks from today!

TPB ThunderClan character preferences headcanons

In general I hc every character to be bi, because that's me (and it opens up plenty of possibilities that don't conflict with the actual canon). But some cats with more specific preferences include:

Firestar: Prefers toms. Has probably had at least one fling with nearly every tom in ThunderClan by the time they move territories. Sandstorm considers it a big W to have gotten with him, considering this.

Graystripe: Prefers she-cats, except for Firestar, who is his favorite. Graystipe is disaster bi and so are his son (Stormfur) and grandson (Feather of Flying Hawk). Graystripe is just generally down.

Ravenpaw: Precious little gay cat. Had an awkward apprentice crush on Tigerclaw until he was clearly a villain. Then had it down bad for Firepaw until he lived happily ever after with Barley.

Tigerclaw: All of his relationships are transactional. I do like the AU idea where he's so taken with Fireheart's genuineness that he falls for him though.

Whitestorm: The clan's gay uncle. For romance it's all toms, but he's had kits with his she-cat besties. He knows all the gossip about who's into who.

Lionheart: The straightest man in the clan, much to Whitestorm's consternation.

Darkstripe: Do I need to say it?

Longtail: The coolest bisexual in ThunderClan. All the cats I specifically ship him with prior to his retirement are toms (hello LongFire) but I just know in my heart that he is the most true-neutral bisexual in camp.

Mousefur: She identified as a lesbian for all of her warrior life (and imo had a big crush on Bluestar) but in retirement she found herself kissing some toms (Longtail/Mousefur cuddle time forever)

Bluestar: Unless they're from RiverClan, she's all about the she-cats.

Dustpelt: "Straight." Yeah okay buddy, I'm sure it definitely just took you and Brackenfur 5 hours to gather sticks to fix the den.

Brackenfur: It would be shorter to list all the cats that Brackenfur did NOT have a crush on at some point.

Sandstorm: I get demi vibes honestly. She just really genuinely likes Firestar (and she's 100% cool with him having tom partners!).

Frostfur, Brindleface, and Goldenflower: They're like career moms? I don't generally think of them as being especially romantically attached to the fathers of their kits, it's more like they were just the toms who helped them with their work. They've got throuple energy.

Cloudtail & Brightheart: They're so almost a monogamous straight couple, but I feel like they like to pull in a tom as a third sometimes.

hmm, first off, disclaimer: posts prefixed with "hot take" are intentionally inflammatory, not carefully considered proposals, and are not things which i necessarily actually endorse wholeheartedly (or at all). this particular post was inspired by me stumbling across a reddit post on r/all where a ton of people who as far as i know do not personally know joe jonas and sophie turner were intensely discussing if and why they might be divorcing. like jesus christ, people. you don't know these two, you never will, and you have no reason whatsoever to care even an iota about their lives, except that the Monkey Status Module sitting on top of your limbic system is telling you "ooh! high-status monkey! let us pay attention to them!"

actors, and certain kinds of musicians, for whatever reason seem to come in for this kind of obsessive treatment most of all, second only perhaps to the british royal family. probably because they're intensely recognizable, and often attractive. they serve, i suppose, as a canvas for projecting our own hopes and insecurities. every once in a while i get served a tiktok which alludes to the existence of the people who secretly believe that a) taylor swift is a lesbian, and b) she is carefully sending coded messages about her lesbianism to her die-hard fans through her music. this is objectively insane behavior. just truly a monumental waste of time. the people who spend their time and energy thinking about this sort of thing are the equivalent of sovcits--deranged, if frequently by the grace of god not quite deranged enough to qualify for a clinical diagnosis.

there are celebrities of other categories who 1) tend not to achieve fame until a little bit later in life (and so are less prone to actual exploitation) and b) even when they do so tend not to attract the same kind of obsessive, rabid maniacs. writers rarely make it big before their 30s; even prodigies like christopher paolini don't become objects of obsession, or superstardom. jk rowling became like the first or second person ever to make it to billionaire status off her writing career, but people still don't really give her deference, or obsess about her personal life. politicians are very well known, but frequently held in (IMO) a healthy degree of contempt and suspicion simply by virtue of their profession. you get exceptions like Trump--but they're obviously divisive figures, often as deeply unpopular with the broader public as they are popular with their own core constituency. many smaller or more workaday musicians, who are not the subject of marketing pushes by large labels, but who may still be widely known.

we could imagine a system where all entertainment and celebrity gossip magazines were simply banned, and nobody was allowed to act in TV or film until they were 45. that would have a certain charm to it! it might help revitalize struggling regional theater scenes, as people honed their craft in anticipation of competing for film roles once they came of age. and, of course, it would be great to see child roles played by, like Hugh Jackman walking on his knees. all drama is artifice, after all; what we take as acceptable deviation from reality now (like 20 year olds playing high schoolers in TV shows) is simply a result of convention and habit; we could form new convention and new habits if we really wanted to. personally, i think gary oldman could play any role he set his mind to if we gave him a chance.

but technology offers us a better way. really, we've had the technology since we invented animation, but i suppose there is always a desire to achieve a certain verisimilitude in certain kinds of art. we no longer have to compromise. between AI and sophisticated computer graphics, why not simply abolish those professions that tend to produce figures that (for reasons of marketing or simply a defect in our ape-minds) we cannot be normal about? we can create sui generis faces for each film or TV show. maybe we can demand all pop music stars go about masked like the daft punk duo.

that's no help with the royals or for sports stars, though i think i am pretty much on record as saying both those jobs would, in the best of all possible worlds, be abolished for other reasons anyway.

More off because that is what he wanted. There were lots of sightings of him at events where he was really flirty or hitting on someone. My opinion and this is just my opinion, he is a clout chaser. I think he tried to find another higher profile girlfriend, but just could not. So his 'hook-up' is now a more serious girlfriend. I too find it weird that the same people talking about Johanne used to describe MK, Rikke, and Fanny the same exact way. Down to the same wording. Except they used to go after MK'S tattoos like they're a bad thing. People were awful about her, and the rest. Now Johanne and his family and friends are getting it too.

Now they act like a friendship, spanning 7 years, is something "more"  bc he likes her posts. Lol I bet he likes a lot of people's/friends posts, guys and girls. Probably a lot of private accounts too bc a lot of his friends went private bc people kept posting his friends' videos and pics. well, i personally wouldn't fully agree with the idea that "everything we see is work" and the accompanying conclusion drawn by people that that means everything we see publicly is entirely fake- it depends. i do think the majority of what we see from celebrities is manufactured in some way- i.e. paps are called more often than not and it isn't all random spottings, fake pr relationships exist, "no publicity is bad publicity" scandals are produced on purpose, deals with tabloids exist to suppress things, etc etc. but, there are some legitimately random sightings from either regular people or the occasional random pap sighting, so you can't truly say everything public is work. a LOT of it is, but of course big celebrities are sometimes gonna be caught off guard and spotted naturally occasionally without a PR agenda. then, even when it IS work (such as a scheduled pap walk), it doesn't mean everything being portrayed is entirely fake, necessarily. sometimes it is completely fake, sometimes it is real, sometimes it is somewhere in the middle.

for example, taking the classic "two co-stars of an upcoming movie/tv show are possibly dating!!!" pr relationship we see often in the media can be one of two things typically: 1) either a completely fake, manufactured "couple" produced entirely to get people interested in the project, or 2) two co-workers who actually got romantically involved and then are used incidentally to get publicity for the project. both of these types of couples would be papped a lot and used for PR for a project, but some are entirely fake and some are entirely real couples. even outside of specific pr couples used specifically for publicity for a movie or w/e, nearly every celebrity couple has been papped at least once in their lives, but that doesn't mean all of them are fake. people are just particularly interested in celebrity couples on a basic gossip level, so they're bound to get papped at some point or used as publicity for something even when they're real. essentially, sometimes things can be both work AND real, and sometimes it can be both work AND fake.

no random uninvolved person at home on their computer can really 100% know which pr relationships are fake and which are real couples just being used for pr, so long story short, it all just comes down to your own common sense, perceptions, and observations based on what you are shown publicly imo. based on my observations, i never believed h-livia to be a real couple because it followed a lot of patterns that felt incredibly fake and manufactured to me and it never convinced me that it was anything beyond PR for DWD. obviously i can never know 100% since i don't know anyone involved personally, but that was my perception of it. then, there are plenty of celebrity couples who get papped often that i think seem like very real relationships. if one or both of H/L end up getting into relationships that ends up convincing me over time that they are real couples based on my own observations, that's something that would make me think it's possible HL have broken up at some point. i haven't seen any public relationship from them that has convinced me so far, so, shrug! that's how i view it lol

Ummm not necessarily a superstition, but I do write in comic sans bc I read that it tricks your brain into thinking you're doing something very silly/not actually serious. And I believe it works for me!! So it must be true, right?

20) If a witch offered you the choice between eternal happiness with your one true love and the ability to finally finish, perfect, and publish your dearest, darlingest, most precious WIP in exactly the way you've always imagined it-- which would you choose?

I know this is supposed to be a hard choice, but. Love. For sure, no hesitation, I'll pick someone supportive sitting next to me on the couch and encouraging me to work on a new fic or an old WIP.

It doesn't hurt that I don't really have a WIP that's a darling to me at the moment. I have a couple that I really wanna finish, though. The next one I'm gonna tackle (hopefully for the end of next month, fingers crossed) is something that was supposed to be written for the reverse bang before last. It's got art by @becomeawendybird and UGH it's gonna be great once I actually write the last 2000 words or so. Details below the cut :)

So the prompt/art is girl direction and basically tax preparer Marcel/stripper Louis-- Marcel works for a big tax company that tweets about being able to help strippers with their taxes (in a cheeky, cute way) and Louis works at the Lusty Lady, a worker owned, unionized peep show in SF. Marcel helps Louis, and the two of them later go on a date and fall for each other. There's some good awkward moments in there and some sexy-ish ones too, imo.

I honestly think I could've finished it in time, but some outside pressures really got into my head and made me scared to finish. Basically I have a lot of sex workers in my life who I love and care about, including people who worked at the Lusty Lady, and someone on here heard that I was writing a stripper fic and got very upset with me, telling me I shouldn't write it bc it's disrespectful and harmful to sex workers.

My beta at the time was literally a sex worker? She is open about this, just to be clear, and I'm not going into this thoughtlessly. While I know I'm not gonna write something that perfectly portrays the experience of All Strippers with a story about someone working at this (pretty unique) spot in a very liberal city like SF, I was hoping to write something cute and fun but also respectful and informative.

ANYWAYYYY i valiantly pretended that i wasn't listening to this one person and did keep working on the fic, but it really got in my head and once I missed the deadline I had to limp over to something else. In case it's not obvious, I'm *still* not over it, and my only hope is that this person (with whom I'm in a mutual block, though I do know they're still active) doesn't know when i publish it and won't go after me for it.

so. uh. late April! hopefully! maybe finishing the WIP is all it will take for my one true love to find me??
