CLOSE!
Australia 0-0 Italy
This is end-to-end stuff. Italy use the space down the right to carve open the defence but Cristiana Girelli’s shot, from a tight angle in the box, is comfortably saved by Australian keeper Lydia Williams.

The two ends behind the goals are both almost full now. The largest and most colourful cluster of Australia fans is up the top tier, above the corner flag that their right-back Ellie Carpenter is defending in this first half.
But it’s clear from the noise that went up when Sam Kerr went close just then that there are Aussies all around the stadium, and I think there are slightly more of them than there are Italians, despite having so much further to travel.

CLOSE!
Australia 0-0 Italy
Oh but this time she wasn’t!
Sam Kerr gets a yard on Italy captain Sara Gama and it’s the same swinging ball in from the left which this time, she connects with cleanly.
Her header flies inches over the bar. Great start!

Australia 0-0 Italy
Sam Kerr is purring. A sneaky run in behind almost puts her in but the swinging cross from the left bounces off the keeper, then off Kerr and over the crossbar.
She’s offside anyway though – by a mile.

Route one stuff from Italy! A through ball completely carves through the Australian midfield and sets Ilaria Mauro on her way down the left wing.
She’s caught up and ends up giving away a free-kick for a bit of elbow nudging.

Italy ‘one of the game’s most improved teams’
Australia v Italy (12:00 BST)
Australia coach Ante Milicic, whose side are ranked nine places above Italy in the world rankings, said on Saturday: “We’re expecting a very difficult game.
“Italy are probably one of the most improved teams in women’s football.
“Individually they’re very strong and tactical they’re flexible. They’re strong on set-pieces so we fully respect our opposition. We’re going to have be at our best to get a result from the game.”

Widely tipped to shine this summer, Australia captain Sam Kerr is the all-time record scorer in both America and Australia’s professional leagues, but is yet to score at the World Cup finals.
Asked how much she has been thinking about getting her first finals goal in her third World Cup, the 25-year-old replied: “Every time I step on the field I want to score for my country but to do it at a World Cup would be a dream come true.
“But I feel like I’m a different player for this world cup. I feel like I’m a different person and better prepared. I hope to add some goals on the scoreboard but if I don’t tomorrow, the win is the most important thing.”

Aussies eyeing up Lyon
Australia v Italy (12:00 BST)
The Matildas, ranked sixth in the world, have reached at least the World Cup quarter-finals in their last three appearances.
They have a new coach, Ante Milicic, who replaced Alen Satjcic following a five-year reign, but it doesn’t seem to have affected the squad.
Australia have won their last three games under Milicic, scoring nine and conceding just one and won the Cup of Nations crown as a result.
They suffered a 5-3 defeat to defending world champions USA in April but there was plenty to be encouraged about by the performance.
They could go far in this tournament and will have their eyes on the final in Lyon if key player Sam Kerr hits the ground running.

Star player – Barbara Bonansea (Italy)
Australia v Italy (12:00 BST)
Juventus’ attacking midfielder Barbara Bonansea is one to watch when she drives through defences with expert dribbling skills.
She has been compared to Italian skiing legend Alberto Tomba because of the way she slaloms through opponents.
A threat on set-pieces, Bonansea scored three and assisted six in qualifying. She studies economics outside of football too so is a woman of many talents!

This 22,600-seater stadium is starting to fill up nicely as kick-off gets closer.
Outside the ground earlier, Australia fans appeared to far, far outnumber Italian fans.
I’ve met many Aussies who’ve travelled all the way from down under, including these fans from Sydney. Similarly, here in the press box, Aussies are in the majority.

Can Italy cause an upset?
Australia v Italy (12:00 BST)
Italy are the underdogs today having only qualified for a third World Cup and their first in 20 years.
But they will fancy themselves to cause an upset and I think they could too.
Football is definitely on the up domestically in Italy with investment in the women’s teams. The national team also won seven out of eight games in qualifying.
Italy have targeted the knockout stages as a realistic goal in this World Cup. With outsiders Jamaica in Group C, a beatable Australian side and an ageing Brazilian squad as their opponents, it is certainly achievable.
The Azzurre are well organised at the back – conceding just four goals in qualifying – and many of the squad play together at club level for Juventus, Fiorentina and AC Milan.

Competition in Group C
Australia v Italy (12:00 BST)
This could be one of the most open groups in the tournament. Australia are the favourites to top Group C given their world ranking.
Brazil will expect to be challenging too but if six-time World Player of the Year Marta, who is a doubt for today’s match against Jamaica, misses out, they could struggle.
They are an ageing squad who have struggled for form in the last two years but they can’t be written off.
Italy will be eyeing up one of the lucky loser places but will fancy their chances against the higher-ranked teams.
Jamaica are the lowest ranked team in the whole competition at 53 in the world and it’s their first ever World Cup.

‘We’re as ready as we can be’ – Game
Australia v Italy (12:00 BST)
Anticipation and expectation in Italy have been rising before their opening game. Asked how the squad are feeling about their extra media interest,Italy and Juventus skipper Sara Gamesaid: “We have our feet very much planted on the ground.
“We are, little by little, getting used to the extra recognition we’re getting, but we have to stay loyal to our values.
“We’re trained a lot, we’ve worked really hard and now all we feel like doing is playing.
“We’re as ready as can be. We’re going to do our best.”

Although Chris and Elsa always look stunning together on the red carpet, they seem to especially love getting cozy on the beach. Just last week, they were hugging and kissing at the same beach and got close during another seaside outing in April. Chris, who recently finished filming the Men in Black reboot, has previously talked about the importance of spending time with his family. Elsa has also shared sweet family moments and cherishes spending time together. Look on to see more cute photos of their most recent day out by the shore. Archiol’s Render Challenge Winners Announced!
Presentation skills are just as important as designing; one of the best mediums to present your architectural designs is through rendering. Architectural rendering aims to create life-like experiences of the buildings before they are built. Rendering aids the designer to convey ideas, an image that represents the designers’ imagination most realistically.
Archiol’s 2021 Render Challenge received 113 entries, scroll down to see the finest of architectural graphics from participants from all over the world.

Archiol Render Challenge Winners in Detail
First Prize Winner_ JIAMAN XU, RUIHENG ZENG & XIAOXIN WANG
Forest fires have always been a desperate topic. In the case of severe forest fires, it is difficult to protect the lives of animals. The Amazon rainforest in 2019 and the Australian forest fires in 2020 caused devastating damage. Countless wild animals died in the fire or were displaced, causing people’s attention. It is precise because of these facts that the rescue of wild animals in fires needs to be widely recognized, and we need to provide them with a temporary shelter.
The refuge site is in New South Wales, Australia, which is hot and less rainy, which is one of the places prone to forest fires. When a fire occurs, the building uses the collected water to spray water through a spray device to form a low-temperature environment and attract animals to take refuge.
In order for our animal shelter to be self-sufficient to the greatest extent possible without human intervention, the operation of the building depends entirely on natural forces. According to realistic theories such as energy conversion, we set up rainwater and fog collection devices to solve the water problem of the building. The fog is converted into water and rainwater is collected to the water storage device at the bottom of the building, which can provide a continuous supply of the ecological environment inside the building. Provide water resources.
The refuge restores the original living environment of Australian animals as much as possible and ensures internal ecological diversity. In order to reduce the damage to the natural ecological environment, we spiral up the ecological layer to reduce the footprint of the building and recreate different ecological environments on the spirally rising ramps and natural environments that can provide sufficient refuge space for animals. Including the basic natural environment such as pools, swamps, grasslands, woods, etc., so that it is divided on each layer but connected to each other.
For example, kangaroos like to run in the bushes, koalas will sleep on eucalyptus trees, wild dogs are used to hunting in the desert, platypuses usually hide in caves by the water, and ostriches with strong adaptability are suitable for most environments, such as open plains, forests or the desert doesn’t matter to them.
After the fire, the forest is slowly recovering, and the animals can return to the natural environment and rebuild their homes. Of course, the animals can continue to stay inside the building, and the food chain can maintain the relative balance of the ecological layer. Animals can enter and leave the building at any time to increase the sense of familiarity and belonging. Perhaps more lives can be saved the next time a fire occurs.
Second Prize Winner_ Antonella Marzi, Chiara Marzi & Marta Dituri
ICE TOWERS “A powerful and evocative gesture, a reinterpretation of the monument in a modern key.” Our concept design is stemming from abstract ideas and shapes in inhospitable environments that become an architectural project. The site context aims to stimulate people’s thoughts on the consequences of human intervention in the living environment and adaptation to architecture.
Two crystalline monoliths emerge in the Arctic landscape. The building’s volume explores the sense as an ice sculpture on the rocks, by means of materials, textures, and colors. As generated by tectonic forces, they guard and conceal an entire underground world. The towers rise from a submerged area, bursting through the surface, which integrating into the landscape – between the cliff and ocean waves.
Third Prize Winner_ MiroslavNaskov
The Forest House, nestled in the serene verdure of the Northern Italian countryside provides its visitors a unique experience. It is nonconformist yet resonates with the rawness of the nature around it.
The stilted housegives one the feeling of being lifted and placed in Nature’s lap, capturing breath taking views of the lush green clad mountains as well as the calm lake set between them. The fluid design and soft volumes of the space add to the tranquillity of the space. The transparency provides panoramic views, inviting nature to become part of the space. Blurring the boundary between the interior and the exterior, the house and nature are in perfect symphony with each other.
The structure uses prefabricated 3D Printed structural elements. This not only eases the process of fabrication and significantly reduces cost but also has least impact on the natural environment. Bespoke furniture designed for the space uses a similar language in design and materiality providing a wholesome yet luxurious experience in all.
Honorable Mention_ Niu Yifan
The globalized new coronavirus epidemic has thrown architectural problems with meaningful thinking to architects. Now in the post-epidemic era, how should architects rethink and define the contemporary attributes of physical public spaces? How to tap and strengthen the quality and value that cannot be replaced by virtual space, and make a targeted response in the design?
My work intends to show the current social situation in a warmer and more hopeful post-epidemic era. Through the architectural vision of the post-epidemic era. I designed a city with extremely prosperous traffic, because traffic is a prerequisite for urban development.
I also designed a public transportation transfer station that can be rotated to facilitate the transfer and transfer of people. This rotation takes five minutes. When the turntable returns to its original position, the station will welcome the next wave of people, and people will meet in this regular and random space. The transmission lasts ten minutes. Then continue to spin for the next five minutes.
This work shows the sense of science and technology that people yearn for in the post-epidemic era and the warm connection between human. The sun shines into your sight through the movable buildings built under traffic, and everything is under the radiation of the sun, with a sense of post-modernity and technology. Everything is very peaceful and full of hope, expressing the prosperous industrial and social development after the epidemic.
Honorable Mention_ ZHIXIANG XIA
The image indicate an architecture which is driven by our minds. I’m always thinking about creating an architecture embodying our souls. The main structure of the architecture can grow and expand as our mind keeps developing. From bottom to top, every part of the structure shows the different stages of our mind, which in the image I visualize it by the people’s activities.
And the connectivity is infinite and continuous; everything is intertwined and bounded together with an invisible force which can be described as the inner inspiration of every thought. Finally, architecture becomes an extension of our minds and it fully shows our inner space.
Honorable Mention_ Tim CheC
The distance between Mars and the Earth is approximately 225 million kilometers, making it the closest “livable” planet to the Earth. Whether the movie” The Martian”, the landing news of the NASA’s “Perseverance”, or even the “SpaceX” company founded by Elon Musk, they all showed us the mysterious appearance of Mars. I am the person who love future technologies and science fiction pretty much. I can’t help but think, when I am 50 years old, will I be able to live on Mars at that time?
In this artwork, I tried to imagine what it might look like when people live on Mars in the future. I took Transit-Oriented-Development (TOD ) as my main concept. The various facilities are connected by channels. The center of the facilities is a big rocket, which will carry the residents transport between different planets.
The main residential facility large greenhouse buildings, which are filled with plants and oxygen. It creates a suitable space for people to live in. On the outer side, there are some Industrial facilities which can mine buried ice and create energy for residents to use.
Is it possible to build a self-sufficient city on Mars? How does it feel like when living on Mars? Are there other planets that can be explored by humans besides Mars? I am curious and excited in the technology and lifestyle of future. I hope through this artwork, everyone can share their imagination about the future living lifestyle.

Introduction Presentation skills are just as important as designing; one of the best mediums to present your architectural designs is through rendering. Architectural rendering aims to create life-like experiences of the buildings before they are built.
Rendering aids the designer to convey his or her ideas, an image that represents the designers’ imagination most realistically.
Competition Brief Create one rendered architectural graphic design that says it all. As this competition aims at exploring and understanding rendering (a medium of conveying designs) to an unimaginable extent, so you are free to choose the type, location, scale. The Rendering can be hand-drawn or digital.
Specific Requirements: A single rendered Image A description of not more than 500 words (100 words minimum)

Gigantic wombat-like creature weighing over 300 pounds roamed prehistoric Australia
Wombats are among the most peculiar of animals. They look like a massively overgrown guinea pig with a boofy head, a waddling gait, squared-off butt, backwards-facing pouch and ever-growing molars.
Indeed, wombats are oddballs and don’t look much like their nearest living relatives, the koala. But koalas and wombats (collectively known as “vombatiformes”) are the last survivors of a once far more diverse group of marsupials whose fossil history stretches back for at least 25 million years.
Working out how this diverse group fizzled out to just wombats and koalas has taken centuries of extraordinary discoveries in the fossil record. We are announcing one of these today in our research published in Scientific Reports.
Mukupirna nambensis is one of the oldest discovered Australian marsupials. Its unveiling has deepened our understanding of the relationships and evolutionary history of one of the strangest groups that once ruled this continent.

Acupuncturing the earth
In 1973 at Lake Pinpa – a small dry salt lake in South Australia – a multi-institutional expedition led by palaeontologist Dick Tedford from the American Museum of Natural History discovered a host of extinct animals.
A combination of drought and strong winds had blown the sand off the surface of the lake bed, revealing the remains of animals that died after getting stuck in mud 25 million years ago.
One of the discoveries was a skull and partial skeleton of a large, distinctive wombat-like animal that was clearly new to science – Mukupirna.
Its fossils were found by pushing a metal rod into the clay at intervals across the lake surface, a bit like acupuncturing the skin of Mother Earth. If the rod struck something hard, the team excavated down to find what was commonly the fossilised skeleton of an otherwise unseen animal.
Once uncovered, they were encased in plaster shells for transport back to the Museum of Natural History, where they were subjected to years of careful preparation. Although Mukupirna was discovered this way in 1973, it’s only now we can formally announce this discovery to the world.
A mammoth find
One of the most remarkable things about this marsupial is its large size, which we estimate was between 143-171 kilograms (315 to 377 pounds), more than four times larger than any living wombat.
Its size inspired the scientific name Mukupirna, from the words muku, meaning “bones” and pirna, meaning “big”, in the Malyangapa and Dieri languages of Aboriginal people from central Australia.
We worked out the earliest vombatiform marsupials probably weighed about 5 kilograms (11 pounds) or less (about the size of a modern koala). That said, body weights of about 100 kilograms, such as that of Mukupirna, then evolved independently at least six times in different branches of the family tree.
The biggest of these would be Diprotodon at about three tonnes, the world’s largest marsupial.

Behaviour up to scratch
Mukupirna‘s forearms were powerfully muscled and its hands may have worked like shovels, an attribute shared with modern wombats. Also like wombats, it was probably a good scratch-digger. But unlike today’s wombats, it probably couldn’t burrow.
Although Mukupirna was clearly herbivorous, unlike wombats its cheek teeth were low-crowned with well-developed roots. This indicates it couldn’t have survived on abrasive plant materials such as grasses, which today’s wombats consume without problems.
Pollens in the fossil deposit indicate that, unlike today, there were no grasslands in this area of central Australia back then. Instead, it was dominated by scrubby rainforest that was also home to possums, koalas and galloping kangaroos.
But alongside them were much stranger, more primitive animals that have left no living descendants. These included Ilaria, which was a bit like a gigantic koala, Ektopodon, an arboreal marsupial with teeth like a cheese-grater and Wakaleo, a leopard-sized marsupial lion with some of the most ferocious butchering teeth ever evolved by a mammal.
These forests were also punctuated by huge inland lakes that were home to lungfish, turtles, crocodiles, flamingos, ducks, stone curlews and even freshwater dolphins.
A lost land
By comparing different features of Mukupirna’s teeth and skeleton, we discovered it to be the closest known relative of modern wombats. Yet, it was as different from wombats as wombats are from koalas, which is why it has been placed in a new family of its own: the Mukupirnidae.
Formal recognition of Mukupirna fills yet another fascinating gap in our knowledge of the weird and wonderful evolutionary history of mammals on this continent.
Sadly, it’s likely all mukupirnids vanished when a shift in global climate triggered an environmental change from scrubby rainforests 25 million years ago, to far lusher and more biodiverse rainforests 23 million years ago.
This would have resulted in more intense greenhouse conditions and an environment presumably not suited to mukupirnids.
Hopefully this rings a warning bell about the state of Earth’s climate now. If we can’t slow the global heating we’ve triggered, how many more of Australia’s uniquely endemic living creatures will soon join Mukupirna in the increasingly crowded abyss of extinction?
