First woman inspector general of CRPF completes tenure in central Kashmir

During her tenure, the paramilitary personnel posted in the Valley were taught the basics of Kashmiri language to have more interface with the local people.

SRINAGAR: The first woman Inspector General (IGP) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Srinagar, Charu Sinha, concluded her two and a half years tenure in central Kashmir.

Sinha has been transferred to Hyderabad.

Sinha headed the CRPF’s Srinagar sector comprising three central Kashmir districts -- Srinagar, Budgam, and Garnderbal.

Before being appointed as IG CRPF in Srinagar on September 2020, Sinha, the 1996-batch IPS officer, had served in Bihar, where she handled anti-Naxal operations.

During her tenure, the paramilitary personnel posted in the Valley were taught the basics of Kashmiri language to have more interface with the local people.

Besides, the paramilitary personnel started using shoe covers in searches of residential houses in the Valley during anti-militancy operations.

“The decision on the use of shoe covers by CRPF men during searches of residential houses was taken to respect the local sentiments,” Charu Sinha had told The New Indian Express.

According to the CRPF spokesman, Sinha was instrumental in bringing a sense of harmony to the local community and contributed immensely towards security and peace in the region.

“During her tenure, she directed CRPF operations with utmost sensitivity towards local sensibilities,” he said. “Citizen friendly attitude of CRPF remained central to her tenure in Central Kashmir.”

The spokesman said her efforts in fostering strong relationships with the local community have helped build trust and cooperation between CRPF and the local population.

“People of this region have been incredibly supportive, and we have been able to establish a strong foundation of trust and cooperation. I am confident that my successor will build upon our success and continue to work towards a safer and more secure future for the people of this region,” Sinha said.

Sinha expressed hope that the people of Kashmir, with their inherent zest for a spirited way of life, will keep ushering themselves toward an era of unending peace and tranquility.

J&K Traffic police barred from issuing e-challans

The Newscraving Desk Srinagar, November 29: A local court here on Tuesday directed the traffic police, Kashmir to halt issuance of e-challans for seizure of vehicles till the time technical glitches faced by the system are resolved. The court also asked the traffic police authorities to release all vehicles seized in gross violation of SOPs. Special Mobile Magistrate (Traffic), Srinagar observed that the seizure of vehicles by e-challan without following the required procedural formalities renders citizens remediless. Quoting an order, news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO) reported that the court directed IGP Kashmir (Traffic) and SSP Traffic Srinagar to ensure halting of e-challans for seizing vehicles till the time technical glitches are properly resolved.  The court was hearing a plea of an applicant, whose vehicle was challaned by the traffic police, Srinagar through e-Challan.   “Undisputed position is that seizure of vehicle in question by E-challan has been issued without following the required procedural formalities. Non compliance of required procedural formalities has not only rendered the applicant remediless but had also denied him the right of a fair trial. The seizure of vehicle as well the fine of Rs. 6000/ imposed upon the applicant is not in accordance with the law,” the court observed.  It said accordingly, SSP traffic is hereby directed that amount of fine so recovered from the applicant be returned to the applicant.  “SSP traffic is also directed to ensure the removal technical glitches faced by the system so that public at large does not suffer,” it said. It also said it has been brought to the notice of this Court that number of other vehicles have been seized by the traffic officials in the same manner through E-challans without ensuring the delivery of corresponding copy of E-challan to this Court.  “All those vehicles which have been seized in gross violation of standard operating procedure of providing copy of E-challan to this Court be released without realizing fine from them,” the court said.  It further directed the IGP Kashmir (Traffic) to ensure the halting of online challans of seizure of vehicles till the technical glitches faced by the system are properly resolved. A Pakistani terrorist of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was among two ultras killed in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, police said.

The encounter at Cheyan Devsar area of the south Kashmir district broke out after security forces launched a cordon and search operation there following inputs about the presence of terrorists, a police official said.

In the ensuing exchange of fire, two terrorists were killed, the official said.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, had earlier said one of the trapped ultras was a Pakistani.

For the first time, active terrorists below 200 in J-K: IGP Vijay Kumar

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar on Thursday said that the number of active terrorists in the valley has come down to less than 200 while the number of active local terrorists have reduced to less than 100, for the first time in history.

"We have been able to breach the mark of 200 terrorists in Kashmir, as it has come down to 180. For the first time in history, local terrorists have reduced to less than 100. The count is 85-86 after yesterday's encounter. So, terrorism is reducing," said IGP Kashmir said while addressing a joint press conference on the two encounters in Kulgam and Anantnag district.
