One of the stories I have come to enjoy on A03 is by HotaruShidosha. It is a fanfiction work about the Fairy Tail pairing of Levy and Gajeel. It is a thrilling read with suspense, intrigue, romance, action, and just the right amount of daily life dashed in to the mix that has me curious and wanting for more. It’s a bit of an AU since there are no guilds, but many of the lovable characters show up to give enough variety of faces without boring the reader of non-stop talking about just the main pair and the main pair alone. I think it’s a good take on the characters as a whole and a unique story worth the read and worth commenting on. The authoress is very amicable and responds to comments in great time. She puts so much thought and care into her work and it shows.

Feedback Fest 2018 Recs

So many stories! So only a list of three of them! My Feb 2018 mood. 

Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer 

Rules of the Road by Gort ( @robotgort ) S5. Spike/Buffy. WIP. Mature.  Picks up at the end of Intervention. Buffy needs someone who can do two things: help keep Dawn safe from Glory and drive a car. Unfortunately, only one person she knows fits the bill—and he’s a vampire. Now she’s on the world’s strangest road trip with Spike and her sister, and her simple plan is getting turned on its head.

I love this story because DAWN. Gort can write her like no one else and the sister dynamics between Buffy and Dawn are wonderful, as is the Spike & Dawn friendship. The setting descriptions are top notch and you feel like you’re along for the ride. This story has it all: action, emotions, and laughs. And who *doesn’t* love lava lizards? 

Another Minute by GraceNM ( @gracenm ) S4. (AtS S1) Buffy/Angel. 2.2 K. Teen.  She doesn't remember, but she'll never forget. Set after the episode "I Will Remember You."

A scene that seamlessly fits into canon and hits all the feels. Amazing use of subtle phrasing to deliver a hell of a gut punch. 

Fandom: Agents of SHIELD

Lids Down, I Count Heartbeats by Kienova ( @kienova66 ) FitzSimmons 1.8K Explicit. S1.E21.  Skye is snoring softly from the other side of the room as Jemma lays awake, listening to the soft humming from the air conditioner and Fitz’s breathing behind her.

I love this fic so much and I need to leave it a proper review since I’ve read it something like five times now. Wonderful writing with a sweet and hot sex scene and a hilarious ending. I want to hug this story.

Feedback Fest 2018

As for  international fanworks day and the Feedback Fest hosted on AO3 here are some fanfic recs for you guys. Please go check them out, all of these authors are amazing and all of this are works I went back to read multiple times because I loved them so so much.

1. Bad Blood written by @toni-ketch . I love this so so much, it has all the angst and deep feelings. John Winchester is not an easy character to write (or love), but this author did an amazing job with this, Actually I think she was the one who made me see John in a different light in the first place. I kinda hated his ass in the show for how he treated the boys. 

Anyway if anyone is looking for a great John Winchester x reader story with all the angst and yet good ending check out what’s behind curtain number 1.

2. The Tower by @littlemisssyreid. I admit I haven't read this multiple times just yet, but only because I’m still dealing with all the feels from the first time. Loki is so in character and half the time I want to strangle him for it. But that scene when the tower collapsed... FEELS! This story has all the original marvel characters 120% in-character and even added some precious OCs on the sideline. I can only imagine how much work went into this and man you should be so so proud of this long and powerful series.

So if anyone of you is looking for a great Loki x Reader multi-chapter series check it out. It’s outstanding!

3. Bits & Pieces by  @wordsplatwrites. this might be cheating because it’s not one work but a collection of shorter ones. But if I have to make a list of favourites this needs to be included. I love going back to read this chapter or the other whenever I’m in need of a short, cute OS. Not x reader, but my precious Tony and Steve being adorable (more like stubborn) together. The vampire AU is one of my favs, but I also love the one where Tony and Nat speak Italian and Steve understands but just doesn't get it...

If you are a fan of Steve x Tony this is a must read. There is so much variety and every little one shot is perfect and precious in its own way.

3. and i adore @thestansayacht! stansa (stannis x sansa) fandom is not as big as sansan or jonsa but what they may lack in size, they make up with heart. the mods rock!!! this blog is quite provocative (meaning nsfw and i love it!!!), beautiful, hilarious, audacious, and full of amazing creations from edits, drabbles, and personal testimonies! honestly, i was so moved when reading why the mods and fellow fans explain why they love stansa - i was nodding in agreement and crying! and the stansa xmas challenge was so much fun!!!! 💕💗❤️

International Fanworks Day: Feedback Fest Recs

So, this is gonna be a long one.

Harry Potter

I will always remain partial to Memento Mori, my first great love amongst fanfictions. @colubrina is go-to for well-thought-out Dramione fics (and Tomione when I’m feeling more cynical). I have a soft spot for Percy, so Irrational has a place in my heart and I will forever lament it being unfinished. And The Best Revenge is a perfect happy!Harry story, unless you really dislike Severus.

The rest is basically SSHG heaven: anything by AriadneAWS or Loten, Camerado, and for a little drama The Princess of Gryffindor and When A Lioness Fights (both are a little over the top, but who doesn’t enjoy that from time to time?). Plus my favourite shorts, Snape and Sympathy and Once More, With Feeling (a marriage law fic with a twist).

Tolkien

When I got back into Tolkien fandom, thanks largely to The Hobbit movies, the first thing I read was Skin Deep, and it’s largely owing to that that I go hooked again. What is and always will be my favourite, though, is Dancing With My Punchlines, which is a modern AU, but the awesomest modern AU that ever was. Anything else from  @imindhowwelayinjune is gold as well, though. Flawed and Fair is a Glorfindel/Ecthelion must-read for everyone, and Gofi and the Balrog is my personal cutesy kidfic favourite. 

Star Trek

Winds Against a Star for Uhura/Spock. I’m pretty sure there were others, but for some reason I don’t have them favourited, so... 

Sherlock

Given my love for Mycroft, have As We Are, As We Were which focuses on his relationship with Sherlock.

Austen

Paradoxically enough, I tend to prefer Austen fics that are mostly or entirely silly, so: The Brighton Effect and A Matter of Secrecy. 

Star Wars

There is only one rec I want to give here, the brilliant Kylux series Children, Wake Up. You probably wouldn’t expect the epic levels it reaches from the way it starts...

Teen Wolf

There’s a lot of guilty pleasures in this one. It’s all either Sterek or Steter. My fave Sterek is definitely the Searching Ceremonies series (soulmate AU, but really well thought out), but Fireman Derek’s Crazy Pie is always amusing to read. For Steter, let me put in Write Me Love Notes In Glitter Glue - I will forever weep over this being unfinished, too - and then most stuff taylorpotato writes.

My latest obsession. I’m all about GammaFrost and FrostIron, so Say Goodbye To Yesterday (who doesn’t like time loops?), Those Sinned Against for some dark grey morality, and Fractals Of A Criminal Mind for a perfect AU (though most of the stuff STARSdidathing writes is great). 

Phew. That was exhausting. I hope I haven’t forgotten any of my faves, but to be honest it’s entirely likely...

Snape/Harry fic rec list for International Fanworks Day -part 1

The Neverending Road by @laventadorn​. In full disclosure I haven’t finished reading this yet but I still eagerly anticipated getting a notification that there was a new chapter. Harry is a girl and Snape is Snape but nicer sort of. He rescues Harry from the Dursleys and is like her guardian and person-who-points-out-bad-ideas until in 4th year Harry gets this unexpected attraction. Realistic characters, well plotted, all around great stuff, you get attached to the characters too. Also the only Harry-is-a-girl fic I’ve ever liked. Laventadorn is a cool person too. 

The Price of Magic by Sinick and ac1d6urn aka Acid. I read this on a plane on an ereader for almost 13 hours straight through. That was my 3rd time reading this novel-sized fanfic. In this fic Harry is a ghost and Snape is suffering from the effects of splinching himself and snakebite. The premise is that magic was wiped out of Britain at the end of Harry’s duel with Voldemort and that the magic community is in shambles because most of them don’t know how to survive in the muggle world. It’s a great, immersive read that tweaks at the canon and asks “What if?’

Commonplace Magic by the same above authors. This is the totally Muggle companion to The Price of Magic and this time the story is about two people who resemble Harry and Snape but that’s where the resemblance ends. They meet when Harry asks Snape if he can borrow the copy of Eugene Onegin that Snape is reading. Harry is a poor college student and Snape is a reclusive ex-Literature professor. A great story about two people living. If you didn’t know it was about Snape and Harry you would never guess. If this were not a fanfic it would be winning all the awards. 

There are times when I’m in the library looking for a book and I’m like “I want a book like Commonplace Magic” and then I get annoyed all over again that it is a singular thing.

Act Five: Deconstruction of an Architect by Dacro. This is a Victorian Muggle AU of Snape and Harry and it’s not actually slashfic. It’s a father/son relationship between Snape, the grouchy architect, Harry the boy he adopts and makes his assistant, and Dumbledore as the housekeeper. Snape is building the Tower Bridge and the fic revolves around its construction. Atmospheric, relationships that are rock-solid, characters that are of the canon yet also something else. 

Tomorrow I’ll try and remember to rec the ones with the explicit sex.

So I was thinking about how you don’t really see recs for very short fic, which is a shame because short fics are amazing, and one of the things I love about fandom is that it has an accepted place for really really short fiction.

And it’s International Fanworks Day. And I started putting together a list. And then I realized that a lot of these shared a theme.

My short contribution to International Fanworks Day 2017.

"I can't believe you're making me do this."

Owen smiled and shrugged his shoulders. "You know you want to."

Zach crossed his arms and looked away. Maybe he was looking forward to it. A little bit. A very tiny little bit. But it was probably just Owen's excitement just rubbing off on him. Yep. That was clearly it.

"Do you know what I had to do to get those tickets?" The San Diego Comic Con was in less than two weeks. Owen had always wanted to go. And he was finally dating someone who he could guilt/trick into going with him.

Zach rolled his eyes and threw up his arms. "I do not want to know."

And they were totally dressing up. Head to toe. And it was going to be awesome. "So... I'm thinking..." Owen looked him up and down slowly and smirked. "You'd make a... hot Spider-Man."

Zach glanced sideways at him. "In a skin-tight costume, huh?"

Owen smiled and crossed his arms.

Zach stepped closer and slowly circled Owen. "You could pull off Captain America. Got the arms."

Owen glanced down at his arms and nodded. "Hawkeye's got nice arms."

Zach shook his head quickly. "No."

"Come on. The Hawk is hot, too."

"No one thinks Hawkeye is hot."

"Strong jaw, pretty eyes, good hair, hot body..." Owen grabbed Zach's hand and pulled the younger man closer. He held Zach against him and spun him around. And then lifted him up.

"O, put me down!"

"Nope." Owen said with a smile. "Not until you admit that Hawkeye is hot."

"No!"

Owen spun them around again and lifted Zach higher off the ground.

"Fine!" Zach snapped after a few more dizzying spins. "You can be Hawkeye. The movie one, not the silly comic one with the goofy purple mask hat thing.

"And?"

Zach rolled his eyes. "You'll be hot." He said. "As Hawkeye." He added softly.

Owen smiled brightly and lowered Zach back to the ground. "You?"

Zach stepped back and nodded. "Yeah, Spider-Man's fine." He turned and started walking away. "With a mask on, no one will know I'm even there."

Feedback Fest 2017

so, I just got wind of @transformativeworks‘ Feedback Fest, and here’s my contribution! FitzSimmons-themed, since that’s how I roll. Decided to do one-shots that I haven’t rec’d before!

always one foot on the ground [G] by theundiagnosable 

This one-shot is truly magical - not to put too fine a point on it. FitzSimmons are adorable, and it’s a truly unusual take on their scientific/analytic natures (in this case, changed to researchers of the existence of magic). I would happily read more of them in this universe, while also feeling like this is exactly the right amount to see of them here. This blend of their naturally skeptical natures with a fairytale-esque atmosphere just hits all the right notes, and I’ll definitely go back to this one for re-reading. 

Oh, What a Night [hard T] by @bookishandbossy

One night stand AUs can be tricky for FitzSimmons, whose relationship is so wonderfully built upon a long friendship in canon, but this one manages the terrain perfectly. They’re both so awkward and intrigued by the other - and yet somehow also competitive all at once. This author’s meet-cutes are some of the FS best, and it plays out adorably in this one shot.

What can I even say about this wonderful fic? I’ve re-read it more times than I can count at this point. I’m weak for any reference to my favorite The West Wing episode, and this fic smartly brings it into the narrative with both Simmons and May’s characterizations at just the right time for it in canon. The team dynamic here (season 2-era FitzSkimmonsMay) is adorable, touching, and heartbreaking all at once, while somehow being perfectly humorous as well. That being said, the FitzSimmons romance part is also excellent, a wonderful depiction of their relationship tiptoeing into “something else.” I also really appreciate that it’s set in Australia, a far more interesting location (and in keeping with the Bus’s worldwide adventures) than the typical America-based road trip. Overall, it’s just absolutely one of my favorites.

One more recommendation is once again from the lovely HotaruShidosha and another Gajevi fic, however this one is based on the movie “The Mummy”. Now, personally, I’ve never watched the film myself but I do know the details of it. I think her selection of the FT characters to “The Mummy” characters is interesting and very believable. It’s a fun read and I think anyone who is a fan of the movie or a fan of Fairy Tail should give the story a try and let the authoress know. She’s so very welcoming and answers her reviews as well.

The talented Annerb is currently writing that one. (After you’ve read this, you can read her Slytherin!Ginny AU, and then everything else she’s ever written because it’s all good.)

Aftershock (20171 words) by @greatestheights​ - “Nobody hurts on purpose.” On the morning of Christmas Eve, Stanley Keyworth talks to five White House staffers about Josh Lyman. This is a companion piece to the West Wing Season 2 episode “Noel” that is so heartbreakingly beautiful and powerful, it’s hard to remember that it’s not canon. (And then go read the rest of Alej’s stories because you miss The West Wing and her stories are amazing.)

to the beginnings of the earth (3676 words) by @openhhearts - This Community fic is a fairly realistic post-S6 study of Jeff Winger and alcoholism, depression, fear of abandonment, recovery, friendship, family, and love. Britta, Shirley, Abed, Craig, and Frankie are in this story too. Annie is in DC for the entire story, but she’s present throughout because Jeff is a lovesick mess. This story is much more hopeful and satisfying than this description is making it sound.

The thing is, when an agent reaches clearance level five, it’s because they’re valuable, capable of something an exponentially diminishing few can offer in the ranks of SHIELD. Clint Barton, his personal issues notwithstanding, is unstoppable behind a scope. Jim Woo is an analyst and extractor par excellence. Melinda May has infiltrated half the presidential offices of Asia, and Phil Coulson has an instinct for the unusual that could be the basis of an entire TV show.
