Important Tips To Improve Vocabulary For IELTS

One of the main problems IELTS candidates face while taking the IELTS exam is that they require a huge range of vocabulary. The key is to focus on the vocabulary you are most likely to need, and during the preparation, months grow your IELTS vocabulary as much as you can. So, become a good collector of words and the IELTS exam will become a bit easy for you.

The development of comprehensive IELTS vocabulary is significant to your IELTS score. To do well, you need to know many words. It is believed that a new word becomes a part of your vocabulary only when it is exposed to 15-20 times. So here are a few important IELTS Vocabulary tips which will help you to score well in your IELTS exam.

Read and Read

The more you read, the more new words will be discovered. This is a very important part of the IELTS preparation and it will also help you in increasing your English fluency. Read about things that interest you: Food, fashion, gardening, celebrity news, science, economics etc. As you read, you will come to know new words in context. Try to understand the meaning of new words from the sentence of the context, if you don’t then refer the English to English dictionary and find the meaning of the word.

Use a vocabulary journal.

You can prepare a vocabulary journal for yourself. This can be a little notebook that you keep with you where you can note down all the new words that you hear or read and keep practising them in your routine talks.

Make use of a dictionary and thesaurus.

You can use hard copies or online versions such as thesaurus.com and dictionary.com. When you find any new word, look it up in the dictionary. An online dictionary will give you the definition as well as will let you hear the pronunciation which will be more helpful. Then you can use the thesaurus to know the synonyms of that new word. You need not memorize each and every synonym. Choose a few synonyms which are interesting and add them to your vocabulary journal.

Use the different forms of the particular word.

In your notebook list the different forms of the word like noun, verb, adjective and adverb form, as well as its past participle. For example: Original word“manage”Noun form“management”Adjective“manageable”Adverb“manageably”Past participle“managed”

Now you have five new words instead of one in your mental word bank. A dictionary will generally give you the different word forms of the word abbreviated as “n” which means noun, “v” which means verb, “adj” which means adjective and “adv” which means adverb.

Collocate

List the words in your notebook that the word collocates with. Such as managing competently, managing effectively, competent management, efficient management and so on.

Write and write

Writing helps to remember new words. Write sentences using the new word in two or more different word forms. Combine reading with writing by writing a short summary of an article using 2 or 3 new words you have read in their various forms. At the end of each week, go back to the list of new words you made. Select 10 words from that week and use them while writing a short story or essay. By these Vocabulary tips, you can make your IELTS preparation more fruitful.

Listen

Hearing new unknown words will help you hear how words are used in the context and also help you with their pronunciation. Watch English music videos or short movie clips on YouTube. You can watch those videos and read the transcripts which are in English to see the spelling of the new unknown words for you. When you hear a word that you have heard for the first time or have difficulty pronouncing it then play it again and say it out. This will help you understand the pronunciation of words and also how they are used in context.

Learn a word a day.

Read the English Dictionary for a new word each day with the definition, pronunciation, word form and example sentences. Add them to your word list and use them in your practice and it will also be helpful in IELTS writing practice.

Speak the new words in your everyday conversation

Incorporate the new words into your everyday conversation. Talk to your family and friends using new words you learned that week in the English, it may be about an article you read, a movie you saw or a hobby you did. The best way to remember words is to use the conversation. This will increase your fluency in speaking which will help you in the IELTS speaking module.

Vomit. Rage. Hatred. I could kill. Right now I would be able to. Hate hate hate. And that was just the beginning of a lovely 5 minute panic attack. Everything worked as far as I knew and I was in the waiting room. I was in the options menu when the examiner joined. And she could hear me and I could hear her. As soon as I left the options menu she couldn't hear me anymore. But then I could see her. She suggested I try and reconnect the microphone (I used the one from my headset) so I did. But there are no headphones allowed and when I reconnected my headset the microphone worked but the sound was on my headphones and not on my speakers anymore -.- so I tried to reconnect my speakers. Analogue because you can't leave the fucking overlay of the test or it gets aborted. So my speakers work again but for some unknown fucked up reason my camera doesn't anymore. Thanks. I am now in shambles. The examiner says she will abort the test before it even started and they will send me information on how to proceed. We had another 5 minutes before my test time really started. Day officially ruined.

How to be a US Pharmacist if you’re a Philippine Registered Pharmacist.

Maraming nagtatanong sa page ko kung paano daw maging US Pharmacist as a Filipino Pharmacist. Kaya, I'll just create a one big post about it. Oo nga pala, it's really hard to get a work visa/sponsorship from the US kung foreign pharmacist ka.

So, kung wala kang way na makapunta ng US to legally work (like a petition, etc) it'll be difficult (Unlike sa mga nurses). I'm no visa expert and won't be able to answer any at all.

but if you're already in the US (as a citizen/permanent resident) and you have a BS Pharmacy degree from the Philippines, here's for you!

First, let's talk about qualifications:

1. You have to be a licensed pharmacist in your home country first. kailangan, board passer ka muna sa Philippines. HINDI REQUIRED ang ANY work experience to qualify for the exam.

2. Your education should be a MINIMUM of 5- years if you graduated after Jan 1, 2003. Kapag 4 years lang natapos, you'll have to go back to school for another year (CLINICAL PHARMACY) or PharmD (plus 2 years). NO EXCEPTIONS. again, di naman mandatory ang pharmD. Okay na yung clinical pharmacy. Also, Not MS/PhD kasi i-evaluate siya case by case and hindi guaranteed to qualify.

Pero kung grumaduate ka before ng Jan 1, 2003, you can take the exam with a 4-year degree as long as you passed the other requirements like TOEFL, good standing w/ your license sa PH, etc.

After meeting the education requirements, no need to study again in the US.

For me, I graduated sa CEU-Manila noong 2015. Kulang yung 4- years na degree ko kaya I went back to school noong 2020-2021 (Clinical pharmacy). I'll link below my experience a full-time student sa Philippines while also working full-time in Texas.

Let's talk about the exams you need to take:

1. TOEFL (ENGLISH TEST) - there are minimum scores you need to achieve. Kahit offered ang TOEFL sa Philippines, it's only acceptable by the US kapag tinake mo siya mismo sa US territories or parts of Canada. You can take this exam with a US tourist visa. TOEFL ha, not IELTS. You can take this anytime kasi 2 years naman ang validity niya.

2. FPGEE (Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Exam). Itong exam na ito ay para sa mga Pharmacists educated outside of the USA. Kahit sa Philippines ka grumaduate, or UK, or Canada, Australia, SAME EXAM for EVERYONE. You need to pass this exam in order for you to INTERN sa desired state mo. This exam is usually administered ONCE A YEAR DURING FALL. You can take this exam with a tourist visa. Btw, it is important to say na kahit na qualified ka na to take the FPGEE, it doesn't guarantee your US tourist visa acceptance. kaya plan accordingly.

Next step is INTERNSHIP. Once you passed TOEFL and FPGEE you're given an FPGEC certification which is a requirement for foreign pharmacists to start Internship! With internship, US tourist visa is not allowed anymore. You need to have a work visa na. Yung required hours ay depende sa state kung saan ka mag-wwork. Example sa California ay 1500 hours. Sa Texas ay 1740 hours. CHECK your RESPECTIVE state's Board of Pharmacy.

3. NAPLEX (North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination). Ito pa lang mismo ang US Pharmacy Boards. I've shared to you my experience when I took it. Ito yung exam na tinatake ng mga FPGEE passers after internship and PharmD graduates ng US. Please see my posts about sa details ng exam and my experiences. I'll link them below.

4. The last exam is MPJE/CPJE. Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination® aka the LAW EXAM. Kahit naipasa mo yung NAPLEX pero hindi yung MPJE, you won't be able to practice as a US Pharmacist. This is a very tricky exam and it should not be taken lightly.
