Pakistan’s Road to Redemption: Can They Repeat Their 2017 Triumph?
Tumblr media
Pakistan vs New Zealand to Kick Off the Tournament
The highly anticipated ICC Champions Trophy will commence with the opening match between Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi on Wednesday. Returning after an eight-year hiatus, this prestigious tournament will feature the world’s top eight cricket teams battling for glory.
Three Weeks of Intense Cricket Action
Over the next three weeks, cricket fans will witness thrilling encounters as teams compete in one of the toughest tournaments, often compared to the World Cup. Hosted by Pakistan under a hybrid model, matches will be played in Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore, and Dubai.
Pakistan Hosts an ICC Event After Three Decades
For the first time since co-hosting the 1996 World Cup, Pakistan is hosting a major ICC event. The journey to organizing this tournament was challenging for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), given the ongoing debate over the relevance of ODI cricket and the dominance of T20 leagues. The event has also been surrounded by geopolitical tensions and concerns over stadium preparations. However, as Pakistan and New Zealand’s captains step out for the toss, all off-field matters will fade into the background.

India vs Pakistan: The Ultimate Blockbuster
The last time Pakistan won the Champions Trophy was in 2017, and they will aim to reclaim the title. While the opening match promises excitement, the real showdown will be on February 23, when India and Pakistan face off in a high-voltage clash. This encounter will spark emotions across borders, ignite memories, and set social media on fire.
India’s High Stakes: A Tournament of Legacy
For India, this tournament carries immense significance. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, two stalwarts of modern cricket, are nearing the end of their ODI careers. A strong performance could define their legacy, while a poor outing might impact their Test careers.
Additionally, coach Gautam Gambhir faces scrutiny. Despite a good run against England at home, past defeats against New Zealand and Australia remain fresh. Winning the ICC Trophy could cement his position, while failure could lead to questions about his coaching tenure.
India last won an ODI title in the 2013 Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. They will enter as strong title contenders, but a single bad session, like in the 2023 World Cup final, could derail their campaign.
Top Contenders for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025
Australia
The five-time World Cup winners and 2006 & 2009 Champions Trophy winners will be without key players like Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood. However, with Steve Smith leading the side, their championship pedigree remains intact.
England
While England’s squad has aging stars and inconsistent form, experienced players like Jos Buttler, Joe Root, and Liam Livingstone could shine. Meanwhile, young talents like Harry Brook and Ben Duckett could shape the team’s future.
New Zealand
The 2000 Champions enter a new era after the retirements of Trent Boult and Tim Southee. However, with Kane Williamson at the helm, they remain strong contenders. Kyle Jamieson replaces the injured Lockie Ferguson and could be a game-changer.
South Africa
Winners of the 1998 ICC Knockout Trophy, South Africa will aim to break their ICC title drought. Having reached the T20 World Cup final, they now seek to add an ODI trophy to their cabinet.
Pakistan
With a world-class fast-bowling attack and strong batters like Fakhar Zaman and Salman Ali Agha, Pakistan can be a formidable force. If they manage to stay composed against India, they could emerge as serious contenders.
Afghanistan
Afghanistan’s victories are no longer considered upsets. With match-winners like Rashid Khan (ICC’s Best ODI Cricketer of the Year), Azmatullah Umarzai, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, they are capable of big surprises.
Bangladesh
Bangladesh has been a consistent presence in this tournament. Having caused upsets before, including in the 2007 ODI World Cup, they will aim to do it again.
Tournament Groups
Group A: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand
Group B: England, Afghanistan, Australia, South Africa
Past Champions
1998 – South Africa
2000 – New Zealand
2002 – India, Sri Lanka (Joint Winners)
2004 – West Indies
2006 – Australia
2009 – Australia
2013 – India
2017 – Pakistan
With a mix of historic rivalries, legendary players, and rising stars, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to deliver a spectacular cricketing experience.

ICC Champions Trophy 2025: PCB Ordered to Appoint Sarfaraz Ahmed as 'mentor' to Crush India
Tumblr media
ICC Champions Trophy 2025: The Champions Trophy 2025 is just a month away now and the teams have started preparing their respective squads for the marquee ICC tournament. While all the teams have officially announced their squads, India and Pakistan are yet to do it.
According to the reports, Pakistan has submitted its list of preliminary players but will trim the squad down to 15 players by February 10. The Men in Green have opted to go for a young squad and it doesn't have the experience of veteran wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed in it.
However, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has a new role for Sarfaraz Ahmed in the upcoming Champions Trophy. Basit wants Sarfaraz Ahmed to be appointed as the mentor and has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board to take action soon.

Basit Ali has a new role for Sarfaraz Ahmed
While speaking on his YouTube channel, Basit Ali asked the PCB to learn from the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and appoint a mentor for the Champions Trophy. He named Sarfaraz Ahmed for the role since he has the experience of beating India in the Champions Trophy 2017 final.
“Afghanistan appointed the great Younis Khan as mentor, who is a good choice. People in Pakistan must be sleeping, so is the board. They need a mentor against India, someone who won you the Champions Trophy the last time: Sarfaraz Ahmed,” Basit said.
“In this match, Sarfaraz's suggestions will work. He has the experience of lifting the trophy against them. I won't take anyone else's name. He led the team to victory,” he added.
Under the leadership of Sarfaraz Ahmed, Pakistan won the 2017 Champions Trophy after defeating arch-rivals India in the final. The Men in Green arrived into the final as underdogs but stunned India on the historic occasion.

Afghanistan rope in Younis Khan as a mentor
The ACB recently appointed the legendary Pakistan batter Younis Khan as Afghanistan's mentor for the upcoming Champions Trophy to help the team get used to the local conditions. The ACB has previously picked players from the host nations as mentors for specific ICC tournaments.
In the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India, Ajay Jadeja was roped in as their mentor as Afghanistan registered historic wins over Pakistan and England in the tournament. Jadeja's experience of local conditions helped the team get used to it.
In the T20 World Cup 2024, Afghanistan had Dwayne Bravo as their mentor as the tournament was held in the West Indies. Afghanistan reached the semi-finals of the tournament in their greatest-ever finish in a senior ICC event.

ICC Champions Trophy 2025: 'Will Miss Playing in India' - Fakhar Zaman Fumes at PCB
Tumblr media
Champions Trophy 2025: Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has an old connection with the Champions Trophy. The left-hander made his name in international cricket through this tournament's edition played in 2017 when he helped Pakistan win a historic title.
Eight years later, Zaman is back in the mix for the Champions Trophy, however, his place in the squad is still not confirmed. The Champions Trophy 2025 has faced many controversies which were mostly based around India's travel to Pakistan.
With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirming India not traveling to Pakistan for the tournament, Fakhar Zaman is disappointed but is also excited at the same time to face them in Dubai.

Fakhar Zaman speaks on India not traveling to Pakistan
While speaking to Sports Tak, Fakhar Zaman was asked about India's refusal to visit Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. He claimed that the Indian team would have received an even grander welcome than what Pakistan received when they traveled to India for the ODI World Cup in 2023.
“If India had come to Pakistan, we would’ve given them an even grander welcome and hospitality but they are not coming. It's fine, but we’re excited to play against them in Dubai,” Fakhar said.
Pakistan travelled to India for the ODI World Cup in 2023 when they played most of their matches in Hyderabad. Out of all the venues, Pakistan played only in Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata.
They had a disappointing tournament and finished fifth in the points table. They even lost to Afghanistan in what turned out to be a shocking result. As a result, the Men in Green failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

We will miss playing in India - Fakhar Zaman
While speaking on the same platform, Fakhar Zaman admitted that he will miss playing on Indian soil as the team enjoyed a good time in the country during the World Cup 2023. He was also pleased with the kind of support that he received in India during the tournament.
“Yes, we will definitely miss (playing in India) as we enjoyed a lot during our visit there for the ODI World Cup 2023. We were delighted with the kind of support and the hospitality we got there,” Zaman added.
According to the latest agreement between the ICC, BCCI, and PCB, India and Pakistan will not be required to travel to each other's country for the ICC events for the current cycle. While the other teams will play their matches in the host nation, India and Pakistan will play their matches through a hybrid model in any other country.

Fakhar Zaman to be selected in Pakistan's Champions Trophy squad?
India and Pakistan are the only two teams in the Champions Trophy not to have announced their final squads so far. Pakistan is believed to have submitted its preliminary squad but will trim down the squad to 15 players by February 10.
Fakhar Zaman is in line to be selected for the Champions Trophy despite not having played an ODI since the ODI World Cup 2023. Zaman was earlier dropped from Pakistan's ODI squad for the Australia tour after he had criticized the PCB's decision to drop Babar Azam.
Pakistan will open their campaign against New Zealand on February 19 at Karachi. The Men in Green will then face arch-rivals India in Dubai on February 23. They will face Bangladesh in their final group match on February 27 at Rawalpindi.

I was thinking about the omega bets, they start with Stu getting sent to the aus dressing room during the 2013/14 ashes, don't they? 😭 And they include major icc events, and bilateral test series, right?
So I was thinking, since VK is bonded so early in Omegaverse, he's obviously not available for the bets, since they begin properly after his marriage. Problem is though, India has lost a lot of ICC tournaments and bilaterals during that time 😫
2014 T20 WC- Lost the finals to Sri Lanka.
2017 Champions Trophy- Lost the finals to Pakistan
2021 World Test Championship- Lost the finals to New Zealand
2023 World Test Championship- Lost the finals to Australia.
2023 World Cup- Lost the finals to Australia.
And that's not counting all the test series we lost during that time 😭 Who do you think are the omegas who get bet here, especially after the ICC finals losses? Since VK is not there?
I’d honestly need to look at the squad lists and work out who the omegas are - it might be that the earlier stuff is still a staff member (if India don’t have another omega), but as soon as VK is bonded to Pat he’s seen as Pat’s property, so the BCCI would have no right to bet VK without Pat’s permission.
Whiiiich may come into play for the later series you’ve mentioned

How did MS Dhoni become such a great cricketer?
Calmness and patience are key resources in MS Dhoni life. He is born in middle-class family where Pan Singh Dhoni, his father, has retired from MECON. It is a government-owned company that reports to the Ministry of Steel. Dhoni’s father was a junior manager there at the time.
When MS Dhoni was in school he played as wicketkeeper-batsman and made an impact on everyone with his keeping skill and batting. Due to good keeping skills, he got a place as a permanent wicketkeeper in COMMANDO CRICKET CLUB for a duration of 3 years from 1995-89. He continually did well in every game and was finally selected in the U16 vinoo mankand trophy 1997-98.

With his continuous efforts, he got selected in India A for Zimbabwe and Kenya. He scored back to back centuries and got the attention of all selectors.
After giving good performance in India A team, he was selected in Team India for the Bangladesh tour 2004-05. Dhoni didn’t have an auspicious start, as he was dismissed for a duck in his first game.It was an average series for Dhoni against Bangladesh. Fortunately, he was also chosen for the Pakistan series. But against Pakistan MS Dhoni scored his first international hundred.
He continued to play well after that, and on April 26, 2006, he overtook Ricky Ponting as the number one ODI batsman in the ICC ODI Rankings, being the fastest batter to do so in only 42 innings.
M.S. Dhoni was named Indian captain for the maiden T20 World Cup,  He was given a young team with very little experience. Team India won the 2007 T20 World Cup on September 24, 2007.

Under Dhoni’s captaincy, India won the 2013 Champion Trophy, making him the first and only captain to win all of the ICC trophies.

Kohli made his Test debut in 2011.[6] He reached the number one spot in the ICC rankings for ODI batsmen for the first time in 2013.[7] He has won Man of the Tournament twice at the ICC World Twenty20 (in 2014 and 2016). He also holds the world record of being the fastest to 23,000 international runs.[8]
Kohli has been the recipient of many awards– most notably the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (ICC Men's Cricketer of the Decade): 2011–2020; Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (ICC Cricketer of the Year) in 2017 and 2018; ICC Test Player of the Year (2018); ICC ODI Player of the Year (2012, 2017, 2018) and Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World (2016, 2017 and 2018).[9] At the national level, he was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2013, the Padma Shri under the sports category in 2017[10] and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, the highest sporting honour in India, in 2018.[11] He is ranked as one of the world's most famous athletes by ESPN[12] and one of the most valuable athlete brands by Forbes.[13] In 2018, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.[14] In 2020, he was ranked 66th in Forbes list of the top 100 highest-paid athletes in the world for the year 2020 with estimated earnings of over $26 million.[15]
Early years
In August 2008, Kohli was included in the Indian ODI squad for tour of Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Prior to the Sri Lankan tour, Kohli had played only eight List A matches.[46] So, his selection was called a "surprise call-up".[47] During the Sri Lankan tour, as both first-choice openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were injured, Kohli batted as a makeshift opener throughout the series.[48] He made his international debut, at the age of 19, in the first ODI of the tour and was dismissed for 12.[49] He made his first ODI half century, a score of 54, in the fourth match.[49] He had scores of 37, 25 and 31 in the other three matches.[49] India won the series 3–2 which was India's first ODI series win against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.[50][51]
After the postponement of Champions Trophy to 2009, Kohli was picked as a replacement for the injured Shikhar Dhawan in the India A squad for the unofficial Tests against Australia A in September 2008.[52] He batted only once in the two-match series, and scored 49 in that innings.[53] Later that month in September 2008, he played for Delhi in the Nissar Trophy against SNGPL (winners of Quaid-i-Azam Trophy from Pakistan) and top-scored for Delhi in both innings, with 52 and 197.[54][55] The match was drawn but SNGPL won the trophy on first-innings lead.[55] In October 2008, Kohli played for Indian Board President's XI in a four-day tour match against Australia.[56]
Kohli, after recovering from a minor shoulder injury, returned to the national team replacing the injured Gautam Gambhir in the Indian squad for the tri-series in Sri Lanka.[57] He batted at number 4 for India in the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy because of an injury to Yuvraj Singh.[58] In the group match against the West Indies, Kohli scored an unbeaten 79 in India's successful chase of 130 and was awarded man of the match award.[59] Kohli played as a reserve batsman in the seven-match home ODI series against Australia, appearing in two matches.[60] He found a place in the home ODI series against Sri Lanka in December 2009 and scored 27[61] and 54 in the first two ODIs before making way for Yuvraj who regained fitness for the third ODI. However, Yuvraj's finger injury recurred leading to him being ruled out indefinitely.[62][63] Kohli returned to the team in the fourth ODI at Kolkata and scored his first ODI century–107 off 114 balls–sharing a 224-run partnership for the third wicket with Gambhir, who made his personal best score of 150.[49][64] India won by seven wickets to seal the series 3–1.[49] The man of the match was awarded to Gambhir who gave the award to Kohli.[64]
Tendulkar was rested for the tri-nation ODI tournament in Bangladesh in January 2010,[65] which enabled Kohli to play in each of India's five matches.[66] Against Bangladesh, he scored 91 to help secure a win after India collapsed to 51/3 early in their run-chase of 297.[49][67] In the next match against Sri Lanka, Kohli ended unbeaten on 71 to help India win the match with a bonus point having chased down their target of 214 within 33 overs.[68] The next day, he scored his second ODI century, against Bangladesh, bringing up the mark with the winning runs.[69] He became only the third Indian batsman to score two ODI centuries before their 22nd birthday, after Tendulkar and Suresh Raina.[70] Kohli was much praised for his performances during the series[71][72] in particular by the Indian captain Dhoni.[73] Although Kohli made only two runs in the final against Sri Lanka in a four-wicket Indian defeat,[74] he finished as the leading run-getter of the series with 275 runs from five innings at an average of 91.66.[75] In the three-match ODI series at home against South Africa in February, Kohli batted in two games and had scores of 31 and 57.[49]
Rise through the ranks
Raina was named captain and Kohli vice-captain for the tri-series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe in May–June 2010, as many first-choice players skipped the tour.[76] Kohli made 168 runs at an average of 42.00 including two fifties,[77] but India suffered three defeats in four matches and crashed out of the series. During the series, Kohli became the fastest Indian batsman to reach 1,000 runs
