IC 1396 is a large circular emission nebula and star cluster in the constellation Cepheus. (If this general shape looks familiar, compare IC 1396 to the Rosette Nebula in Monoceros in terms of the roughly circular structure and that central bowl being carved out by the radiation from a batch of overenthusiastic core stars). The brightest star in the frame, on the right, is the Garnet Star (mu Cephei), which is actually farther away than most of the gas, dust, and other material in the frame, and is one of the largest known stars (1,650 times the size of the Sun). The bright star in the center of IC 1396 is HD 206267, a variable double star. It is the intense radiation and stellar wind from the core star cluster, including HD 206267, that drives the expansion of the circular shell of dust and ionized hydrogen. This bright circular structure on is over a hundred lightyears across. The "Elephant's Trunk Nebula" (VdB 142, Van den Bergh 142, IC 1396A) is the towering structure running up the center from the bottom of IC1396. There are a bunch of Barnard Catalogue dark nebulae in the region, including Barnard 161, above and to the right of the Elephant's Trunk, with B 163, 160, and 365 along the left. To give you a sense of the size of IC 1396, you're looking at roughly 600 trillion miles from top to bottom (965 trillion kilometers).

IC 1396 (The Elephant Trunk Nebula) is a large and relatively faint emmision nebula that spans a swatch of the sky 100 light years across in Cepheus. Designated IC 1396A and also know as the Elephant’s Trunk nebula is located in the cloud. About 2400 light years from us, the elephant’s trunk itself is approximately 20 lightyears across. Image is a result of 40x6minute subexposures, 20 darks, 40 flats and 40 dark flats.

“The Elephant Trunk nebula, also known as IC 1396 is found in the constellation Cepheus and is about 2,400 light years away. IC 1396 is one of the larger emission nebula and contains several star forming regions. The most prominent is IC 1396A which is the part that resembles an elephant trunk. IC 1396A is a dense dark cloud of dust that is illuminated by a very bright nearby star that also illuminates the entire nebula. ©Bill snyder”.credit: @stellar_nerd.CB Science features the latest news in the world of science....Check out our science-themed products at cmonstore.com#secularism #freethinker #logic #research #noreligion #godless #engineering #biology #galaxy #space #nogod #atheist #atheism #humanist #laboratory #universe #nasa #secular #scientist #evolution #hubble #goodwithoutgod #cosmos #godisdead #skeptic #astronomy #agnostic #physics #chemistry

Must be me missing her like crazy. But I can’t unsee what my eyes saw when I found this photo of the elephant trunk nebula tonight. She is painted in the stars. I knew it and this is proof.
I mentioned the rightside artist in the tags. But just to be sure: Leftside is a photo of the Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) with colours added to it (sadly cant find who made it) Rightside is a piece of @papurrcat her beautifull art.

Elephant’s Trunk Nebula
The Elephant's Trunk nebula is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust within the much larger ionized gas region IC 1396 located in the constellation Cepheus about 2,400 light years away from Earth.[1] The piece of the nebula shown here is the dark, dense globule IC 1396A; it is commonly called the Elephant's Trunk nebula because of its appearance at visible light wavelengths, where there is a dark patch with a bright, sinuous rim. The bright rim is the surface of the dense cloud that is being illuminated and ionized by a very bright, massive star (HD 206267) that is just to the west of IC 1396A. (In the Figure above, the massive star is just to the left of the edge of the image.) The entire IC 1396 region is ionized by the massive star, except for dense globules that can protect themselves from the star's harsh ultraviolet rays.

From Astronomy Picture of the Day; January 19, 2017:
The Elephant's Trunk Nebula in Cepheus Stephen Leshin
Like an illustration in a galactic Just So Story, the Elephant's Trunk Nebula winds through the emission nebula and young star cluster complex IC 1396, in the high and far off constellation of Cepheus. Also known as vdB 142, the cosmic elephant's trunk is over 20 light-years long. This colorful close-up view includes image data from a narrow band filter that transmits the light from ionized hydrogen atoms in the region. The resulting composite highlights the bright swept-back ridges that outline pockets of cool interstellar dust and gas. Such embedded, dark, tendril-shaped clouds contain the raw material for star formation and hide protostars within. Nearly 3,000 light-years distant, the relatively faint IC 1396 complex covers a large region on the sky, spanning over 5 degrees. This dramatic scene spans a 1 degree wide field, about the size of 2 Full Moons.

The IC 1396 region: IC 1396A is the Elephant's Trunk Nebula (center) surrounded by knots and bands of dark interstellar dust. Barnard 163 (B163) is the dark nebula center top. When it comes to narrowband imaging (Ha, OIII, SII) the constellation Cepheus is one of my favorites. I could spend a month just on IC 1396, the whole region, capturing the dozens of dark nebulae and the Elephant's Trunk at different focal lengths, but Cepheus also has the Iris Nebula and a bunch of other cool nebulae, including Barnard Catalogue objects like B169, as well as LDN 1272 and the wisps of hydrogen clouds that make up Sh2-134. All worthy targets for your telescope and camera. Notes: 48 x 240 second subs of Ha and OIII, William Optics GT81 Apo refractor, ZWO ASI1600MM-Pro mono camera, Astronomik filters, iOptron CEM25P mount.

Here's the result of 10 stacked 600-second exposures in Hydrogen-alpha, of the large region of interstellar gas centered on the Elephant's Trunk nebula (IC 1396A) in the constellation Cepheus. IC 1369A is about 2,400 light years away. http://SaltwaterWitch.com
