Still dependent on Russia, India exchanges its MiG-21 for the Su-30 MKI
The Number 4 Squadron of the Indian Air Force was converted from Mig-21 fighters to Su-30 MKI, continuing to depend on Russia since the Soviet era.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/03/2023 - 12:30 in Military
Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots are ceasing to fly on the MiG-21 jets and moving to the Su-30MKI, with IAF Squadron Number 4 on October 30 performing the last out of the supersonic fighter that has been in service for 60 years.
The formal induction of the Su-30MKI took place on the same day, joining the MiG-21 in its final overflight.
The IAF depends on Russian defense companies for Su-30 MKI spare parts and publicly expressed difficulties with these suppliers in February 2022, during the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, as sanctions on Russia led to delivery failures.
Even with the flourishing of its partnership with the US, India remains a long-term strategic partner of Russia. The relationship with Russia in defense matters has a deep history and is necessary to maintain the Indian military platforms that, in many cases, date back to the Soviet era.
The decision to phase out the MiG-21 in favor of the Su-30 MKI and LCA fighters developed in the country was announced in 2011, when 476 jets in the fleet of 946 MiG-21 aircraft were lost in accidents over the decades. Initially scheduled for 2017, the replacement is still in progress, with two MiG-21 squadrons still in operation.
The MiG-21 was the first IAF supersonic jet, put into service in 1963 and in operation with Squadron Number 4 since 1966. The variant of the second-generation interceptor began to be delivered in 1964 and was used with great effect in conflicts with Pakistan in the periods of 1965 and 1971.
The Su-30 MKI was jointly designed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited based on the Su-30 fighter. The MKI variant is a multifunctional combat aircraft that made its first flight in 1997. A major advance over the MiG-21 that the Su-30 MKI offers is a fly-by-wire control system.
The MiG-21 was highly maneuverable when it was first introduced, but today it is surpassed by aircraft with new avionics system.

12 Cheetahs from South Africa Will be Relocated to MP’s Kuno National Park on 18 February
Last year, the first batch of 8 Namibian Cheetahs arrived in Madhya Pradesh on 17 September under the Cheetah reintroduction program. The second batch of 12 Cheetahs will be flown from South Africa’s O R Tambo International Airport in Gauteng on Friday evening, and reach on 18 February at Kuno National Park. As per a Madhya Pradesh government official, the journey to the national park will be taken by IAF's MI-17 helicopters. The official also said that Bhupender Yadav, the Union Environment Minister, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Chief Minister will release them in the Kuno National Park’s quarantine enclosures on Saturday.
Narendra Singh Tomar, the Union Agriculture Minister, and Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Civil Aviation Minister could be present for the occasion tomorrow, but confirmation on this is still awaited. The Chief of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), SP Yadav said that for the 12 Cheetahs, they have created 10 quarantine bomas at Kuno. Yadav also said that on 20 February, a consultative workshop will be held at Kuno involving international Cheetah experts, veterinarians, forest officials, and scientists. The event will focus on better cheetah management.
Before being released into the wild, the 8 Namibian Cheetahs are currently in hunting enclosures so that the cats can interact with each other. The enclosures are of a six square Km- area. As per the government official, the Cheetahs are in good health and are killing prey at an interval of 3 to 4 days. Also, a spotted cat is recovering from treatment. She was unwell because of high creatinine levels. Around 7,000 cheetahs are in South Africa and the majority of these belong to Botswana and Namibia (the world’s largest cheetah population).
It has been 3 years since the idea of relocating 12 Cheetahs from South Africa was mooted by the government of India. Initially, the nation had plans to get the spotted cats by the mid of 2022. However, MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between the two countries took time and led to the delay with the Cheetahs as they continued with their quarantine. Restoring the population of Cheetahs in India has been a priority and the project is expanding by even considering the ecological objectives.
In 2009, India conceived the African Cheetah Introduction Project. But did not show any results for more than a decade. Then due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the plan for bringing the Cheetahs in November 2021 in Kuno fell apart.

Mere months before her name first appeared on the CNN website, Qiblawi publicly corresponded with a friend who fantasized about “the end of the Zionist state.” When that friend pictured retiring in “Haifa, the coastal northern metropolis of Palestine [sic] … at the George Habash [PFLP leader] resort, in which European Jewish waiters serve my ever frustrating needs,” Qiblawi responded with “lol,” in addition to liking the comment.
Two days after the January 2015 terror attack in Paris, which targeted the Charlie Hebdo magazine and a kosher supermarket, Qiblawi took to Facebook to tell her followers she was “not convinced” that Islamist terrorists perpetrated the massacre, and complained about “the absence of any critical consideration of the parties with a vested interest in framing Muslims.”
In a follow-up comment, the journalist wrote: “[O]ur tendency towards conspiracies is not based on some kind of mass paranoid schizophrenia but knowledge of our history with the west,” citing an alleged “campaign to dispossess Palestinians in ’48” as one example of a conspiracy by “the West.
Meanwhile, in a 2014 post condemning the Syrian army, she expressed her “desire for resistance to the Zio-Saudi project,” adding that she’d “like nothing more than to support a ‘resistance axis.’” Notably, the “axis of resistance” usually refers to Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian, and other Iran-backed terrorist organizations that seek Israel’s destruction.
Qiblawi also accused the Israel Defense Forces of a “genocidal onslaught” during the First Lebanon War, criticized Starbucks for purportedly being an “openly zionist corporation,” and liked a comment that dubbed Israelis “racist criminals and liars.”
In a 2011 blog post, she boasted about giving the finger to IDF soldiers guarding the ceasefire line with Lebanon.
Tamara Qiblawi is, of course, entitled to her personal views, even if they are uninformed. But as we previously outlined, producers with a political agenda can be selective with the information they present to the public, resulting in skewed media coverage of the Middle East conflict.
The article she helped write this week came amid the unremitting onslaught of Palestinian terrorist attacks in Israel and the West Bank that started in March 2022, and after last week’s Iran-linked rocket fire from the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
In the article, readers are led to believe that the Jewish state is to blame for the latest escalation. Studies indicate that nearly 50 percent of news consumers don’t read past the headline, yet only in the second paragraph does CNN reveal that the IAF raid in Lebanon was a direct response to “an attack the Israeli military blamed on Palestinian militants.”
The piece furthermore presents Israel as the aggressor by misleadingly claiming that it was not violent Palestinian riots, but rather the subsequent “police raids on the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem,” that triggered the most recent uptick in hostilities.
Sadly, Qiblawi is but the latest in a series of journalists whose shocking views have been exposed by HonestReporting. Since August 2022, our editorial team has uncovered six antisemitic, anti-Israel journalists, whose employers decided to remove them from their posts in order to safeguard journalistic integrity.
We have contacted CNN’s Atlanta headquarters for comment and urge the organization to protect the balance and accuracy of its Middle East coverage.
Following the publication the original exposé, Tamara Qiblawi took down her social media accounts. This article includes screenshots of her Facebook posts.
A CNN journalist shared a string of offensive, anti-Israel and pro-terror comments on social media, HonestReporting revealed on Monday, following up on six other revelations of blatantly antisemitic journalists since last August.
A slanted April 8 CNN International article, headlined “Attacks in West Bank, Tel Aviv as tensions remain high following Israeli strikes,” initially failed to note that the airstrikes were in response to acts of aggression from terrorist groups in Gaza and Lebanon.
An examination of one of the names on the byline reveals a possible explanation.
Tamara Qiblawi, a Georgetown-educated native of Lebanon, has done work for CNN since 2015, and currently holds the position of Senior Digital Middle East Producer at the US broadcaster’s London bureau. However, Qiblawi’s social media history casts doubt on her commitment to CNN’s editorial standards, specifically when it comes to reporting on the Arab-Israeli conflict.
For instance, in a May 15, 2015, Facebook entry, she described the events surrounding Israel’s founding with the Palestinian term “Nakba,” an Arabic word meaning “catastrophe,” while denouncing the creation of a safe haven for Jews as “mak[ing] way for an ethno-religious exclusive state.”

With improvements, Israeli Air Force F-35I fighters can now arrive in Iran without air refueling
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 06/13/2022 - 11:15 PM in Military, War Zones
Faced with the continuous development of Iran's nuclear capacity, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) has developed an improvement to be able to fly its F-35 poachers from Israel to the Islamic Republic without requiring refueling in the air.
The claim is vague and without further details, however, based on last year's reports, it is highly likely that the IAF has placed new stealthy external fuel tanks for the F-35 fleet.
Development is a boost to the capabilities of the Israeli Air Force and occurs when the Israeli military increases its preparations for a future attack on Iran's nuclear capabilities.
In addition, the IAF recently integrated a new one-ton bomb into the arsenal of weapons used by the F-35I (known in the IAF as "Adir") that can be transported inside the aircraft's internal weapons compartment without compromising its radar signature.
The bomb - manufactured by Rafael Advanced Weapons Systems - is considered autonomous and protected against interference and electronic warfare systems. The bomb was recently used in a series of IAF tests, the results of which were presented to Defense Minister Benny Gantz.
The IAF conducted four large-scale exercises simulating attacks against Iran in the last month. The first exercise included confrontation with Iranian radars and detection systems, such as those that protect their nuclear facilities. The second included the simulation of long-range combat flights - in this case to destinations in Europe. The other exercises included defensive measures against cyber weapons and electronic warfare systems, means that could be used ?? by Iran to undermine an Israeli military operation.
The news of progress in military preparation came just a day after Prime Minister Naftali Bennett told the Knesset Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense that Israel's strategy for Iran has changed last year.
During the recent military maneuvers, the IAF also matured cooperation between fifth-generation fighters, such as the F-35, and fourth-generation jets, such as Israel's oldest F-15 and F-16 models. The planes practiced intelligence sharing, missions and much more.
"Iran's surface-to-air missile systems and radars are crowded and are not the only challenge," said a defense officer. “We need to be able to attack significant targets and the attack needs to be able to cause extensive damage. There are several targets in Iran in different ranges."

Indian Air Force pulls out of multilateral air exercise in UK
Though the IAF did not clearly mention the reasons for the pull-out, it is learnt that the deepening crisis in Ukraine following the Russian military attack in that country prompted the decision.
The Indian Air Force has decided not to deploy its combat jets in a multilateral air exercise in the UK next month in view of the situation arising out of the crisis in Ukraine.
The announcement by the IAF to not send its aircraft for the ‘Cobra Warrior’ exercise came just three days after it confirmed its participation in the drills from March 6 to 27 at Waddington in the United Kingdom.
“In light of the recent events, #IAF has decided not to deploy its aircraft for Exercise Cobra Warrior 2022 in UK,” the IAF tweeted. Though the IAF did not clearly mention the reasons for the pull-out, it is learnt that the deepening crisis in Ukraine following the Russian military attack in that country prompted the decision.
The announcement by the IAF came hours after India abstained from voting on a UN Security Council resolution on the Russian military aggression against Ukraine.
Official sources said by abstaining from the resolution, India retained the option of reaching out to all relevant sides to find a middle ground and foster dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the crisis. On Wednesday, the IAF had announced that it will participate in the ‘Cobra Warrior’ exercise with a fleet of five Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA).
The IAF said the exercise ‘Cobra Warrior 22’ is aimed at providing operational exposure and sharing best practices amongst the participating air forces.
It said the exercise will be a platform for the indigenously developed Tejas aircraft to demonstrate their manoeuvrability and operational capability.
“The exercise is aimed at providing operational exposure and sharing best practices amongst the participating air forces, thereby enhancing combat capability and forging bonds of friendship,” the IAF had said.
