Just a friendly reminder that you're allowed to have your own interpretation of a character if that isn't harming anyone.

Tbh the atsv fan "characterization" that pisses me off the most is the Miles Morales Prowler shit. Thats just a 15 year old. Good god. It makes me want to punch a bitch. At least Hobie is punk (even tho like. I still super dont like thag a lot of characterizations of him that seem to rely too much on the fact that a lot of Punk Thingz™️ (namely, drugs and hate for authority) are also antiblack stereotypes and we should be giving benefit of the doubt in these cases)
But Miles Morales is still Miles Morales, even if in a dif universe he's the prowler and his hair's different(? Im ngl im white and idk if it has anything to do with this, but ive seen his hair referenced before as important). I also see a lot of ppl forgetting how Morales was treated after the first movie, that fuckin colored pencil post still makes me mad.
Pissing me tf off. Sorry for mini rant it just seems you are also on this topic rn and none my friends seem that into the spiderverse 😔
Oh the moment I tried to block the Miguel tag (which DIDNT WORK, btw), the Miles G reader stuff showed up and I had instant regret 😭 but I haven't seen much for him outside of that. I'm glad I haven't, now.
Tbh, I wasn't really into Fandom when ITSV came out, so I (gratefully) missed all of the bullshit I heard happen with that one.
What's really pissed me off about Miles' seeming depiction by fandom, at least in the sections I've seen, is...idk if I'm saying this right.... To over simplify him? Like it frustrates me that a movie, both movies, the existence of Miles Morales himself, ALL have to do with themes of race, representation, and belonging. Yes there are plenty of other messages that are important, but all of them connect back to that identity too.
And people are just... Glossing over that. In this desire to go "oh he's so precious"- in what I'm sure is white ppls well-intentioned attempt to not be seen as a racist that doesn't care about Black children- they are still managing to completely ignore how his identity is symbolic in the storytelling. It's colorblindness in a movie where seeing race is essential and if you're gonna ignore it you might as well not even watch it at all bc at its core it's HIS story.
Like yeah, you think he's queer allegory, yeah you recognize how it feels to not belong, how to fight the status quo, fantastic, I love it, are you actually engaging with the race aspect that affects his experience of all of those things? Are you processing that when Rio said he might not be accepted in spaces, just maybe you have brown friends who feel that way in white spaces, fan and otherwise (esp now with affirmative action lmao, but always with Miles in the comics and dealing with fans). It's easy to think a multicultural movie with a Brown antagonist, well it "can't have to do with race" and that's just not true.
That's why people fixating on Hobie mildly disturbs me too; he TOO is a BLACK punk. That makes a difference, in his solidarity and what that meant for Black viewers. Or how they're ignoring Margo altogether despite her crucial role in his escape. Or how they're refusing to engage with Jessica Drew with understanding (you don't have to agree with her! I don't! But to understand where she stands in that spectrum from Hobie to Miguel, she is not nearly as bad as fandom wants to believe; she's actually comparable to Peter B but misogynoir prevents that conversation).
Like I am so happy we are finally entering an era where Black and Brown people are seeing themselves more on screen in roles we've yearned for, I am. But that also means it's time for white people to start engaging with what that means, and that means unlearning and learning.

heyy sorry dunno if ur ok with ppl asking for advice, but ive been on the twitter mgs fandom for a little while (mostly as a watcher rather than participating other than liking, rting and occasionally commenting or posting some art) and after a while i realized (a bit too late) that quite a few people that i interacted with are aggressively anti and i dont know how to pull away from them now.
Some were mutuals, i stopped following most of them but they still follow me and im not sure if i should just ignore it or whatever. My main account is very clean when it comes to pro/anti discussion and NSFW in general, altho i do like/rt/discuss a lot of anime art and media that has some questionable content in it (like the monogatari series for example)
Anyway, im just a bit scared they might see these "cracks" and it gets to a point of agression/exclusion/doxxing etc and im a bit terrified of that. Sorry if this sounds dumb, but could i ask you what you experience with the mgs fandom is like on twitter? Have you ever been in a similar situation?
It's totally cool to ask for advice! I'm not sure how much help I'll be though.
I have a twitter that's mostly MGS-focused, but I've been building up defenses against the anti movement for a long time before that. I used to be mutuals with someone who was a really notorious asshole twitter anti, actually. I broke that when they started publicly slandering me, but before they could actually dox me, and they still followed me on side accounts for a couple years after that. I got very careful about vetting who I regularly interact with after that.
I got lucky dropping into MGS fandom, I've found a bunch of people who enjoy freaky stuff as much as I do. But I also had one of those friends get doxxed a while back over ship discourse that was spun as something much worse.
Personally, if I see a callout post and it looks fishy (only includes accusations of fic or art, etc), I will a lot of times block everyone that's retweeted or liked it. It's made me sad a couple of times to break mutuals, but I know I'm saving myself the pain later of potentially seeing them fall for it with me. This, when my friend got doxxed, ended up causing me to block like half of the twitter MGS fandom ngl.
Honestly, my secret to not accidentally making full on anti friends is that when I get into a new fandom, I look up their discourse and who antis say shouldn't be shipped together. Then I look and see who makes art/fic of those ships. If I don't like those ships specifically, I find people who ship both that and whatever I like. Usually I end up liking one or more of them anyways (solimiller...). Or I'll go through that fandom's fics with warnings on them and check out those authors' other works.
That's how I keep accidentally meeting a lot of people in fandom, it turns out. I read a fic, I look at the author's other works or their profile, it has a social media handle, or a discord link, or whatever else, next thing I know I'm talking to them and 5 more people they recommended about whatever freaky kink I found of theirs.
I do actually have a (mostly nsfw) discord link that I would share here, but given some of the weird interactions I've gotten tonight I'm gonna wait a couple days before I post it publicly. It's fandom neutral technically but a lot of us like our war boys (mgs/cod mostly). But uhhh if anybody sees this and wants in feel free to dm me/send an off-anon ask and I'll slip ya a link real quiet.
I warn people some of the heavier content that I regularly post as well, even though I don't explicitly use any discourse labels, but honestly the biggest thing is just pulling your interactions like weeds. People on the internet are, mostly, strangers. You don't like someone's vibes? You can block 'em. You see them being a dick to someone else and don't wanna risk them doing the same to you ? Definitely block. Someone makes posts you don't like and it keeps filling up the tags you frequent? You can block that!

why are you liking shipping posts made by proshippers? do you agree with their mindset or something? because that actually makes me lose respect for you ngl. although maybe i shouldn’t be surprised if you do seeing how you tolerate in*es*, and shown you like problematic ships such beatrice/mc or at the very least tolerate that kind of thing too seeing how you’ve told ppl who ship bea with mc and their classmates that “it’s cool” and you’re not judging. not to mention the fact that you’ve said stuff about how it being fiction “makes all the difference” to you or whatever. so yeah it really sounds like you’re a proshipper in the making unfortunately. idk how you can be “neutral” in something like this, you either agree with those freaks or you don’t, it’s not that hard.
...
*Deep sigh*
Okay, let's talk about this some more.
Friend, I understand your concerns, but I think you're kind of veering off and going in a completely different direction than me. You may be forgetting what I've explicitly said about this subject in the past (it's also possible that you never saw these posts, I realize that.) but I've never been a Pro-shipper and I'm not really one "in the making" either. I'm sad to have lost your respect (I got several anons who said something similar, so...ouch, but, it is what it is.) But I don't think you've got the right estimate of my feelings on this subject, nor of how invested I actually am. More than anything, I'd rather just stop talking about it. I can't remember, which post was it that I liked? I need to go back through my liked posts as I mostly just "like" posts to anchor them so I can return to them later, usually to reblog them but sometimes just because I don't have time to read them. Either way, I sort of doubt it was a 100% Pro-shipping post? Even if it was, I may have just had an idea to reblog it with my own take in the tags?
Regarding Neutrality
How can I be neutral? Easily. Being neutral is the easiest damn thing in the world, especially if you have no stake in the conflict (and are otherwise terrified of conflict as I am) and if you don't think it's a conflict that particularly matters. Which, yeah, I don't, sue me. I don't think there's anything immoral about remaining neutral either. I have heard it said before that neutrality in the face of oppression is, itself, siding with the oppressor. But first of all, no. Choosing neutrality may be cowardly in certain situations, and it's definitely not compatible with being an ally. But it is not "siding with the oppressor" because by definition, you are not choosing a side. That's what neutrality means, and people might have various reasons for doing it. Trying to erase that choice isn't helpful. "You either agree with these freaks or you don't." I am always wary of ultimatums like that, because a lot of situations aren't that simple for everyone.
Now all that said, that doesn't mean that I think people should choose neutrality in the face of oppression or injustice. They shouldn't. But onto my second point. This isn't one of those debates where staying out of the fight could reasonably be considered cowardly. At the end of the day, it's just shipping, and no, I truly don't care who people want to ship. Is fiction affected by reality? Are these ships truly no concern because they're fictional characters, or does this set a dangerous precedent? Dude, I don't know. I'm not a psychologist or sociologist or anything like that. I'm just a random cat on the internet who likes to analyze the storytelling and characters of the fiction I consume. I am a dork, not a professional. But because I don't know, I'm not going to take up arms for the stance that fiction affects reality, nor will I for the side that it doesn't.
Do some of these ships disgust me? Yes, they do. But the people who ship the problematic pairings aren't going to stop just because Antis on the internet tell them to. They're just going to block you and move on. (Which is...probably what you should do with them, really.) Several anons took issue with my addressing the people who ship Beatrice x Anyone in MC's year (for simplicity I'll just refer to them as Pro-shippers from here on out.) without judgement...but I think some of these anons forgot or didn't notice what I was saying to the shippers, which was asking them to tag properly. I was asking them to keep their content separate from everyone else's. Yes, I was polite about it, so? Approaching them politely is, most likely, the only way they would hear what I have to say. At least, I'd say it's more likely they'd listen to that over another person calling them pedophiles.
Ah yes, that reminds me. No less than three anons called me a pedophile for "supporting" the pro-shippers. Which uh...yeah, thanks for that. Look, I know your hearts are in the right place, and in a way, I really do respect that. But pedophilia is a real and serious danger. It's one of the lowest evils that the human race has ever spawned. In my opinion, it's the lowest, surpassing racism, misogyny, and all the rest. So, yeah, it's not just some all-purpose word that I would slap onto any ship that makes me uncomfortable. Not unless I felt like said ship actually was a depiction of adults preying on minors. Beatrice and MC are both teenagers. Is it creepy to ship them at their current ages? Of course it is. (I'm not sure anyone actually does that but either way.) But is it pedophilia? No...it's really not. In general, I think the reaction to some of these ships is overblown, and I don't think that's unreasonable, nor does it mean I'm "siding" with the pro-shippers.
In general, a lot of people took also took issue with my saying that "Shippers gonna ship" and called it a rather poor excuse. But I wouldn't say it was an excuse...it was more of an observation? My stating a fact about the way of fandoms? I wasn't saying that it was a good thing. As far as fandom communities go, shipping is a force of nature at this point. Nothing will ever stop it. This includes the people who favor the problematic ships. That doesn't mean I don't wish that these ships were never conceived. For a lot of them, I could truthfully say that the fandom would be better off without them. (...side-eyes sn*rry..) but I'm not looking to tell anyone else how to enjoy their favorite stories, because I'm a stranger on the internet. They're not going to listen to me, why should they? It's just not a fight that I'm interested in even having.
I have no doubt that you're a good person, anon. But I'm still not sure what I've done to offend you. I don't even want to get involved in this debate, and yet somehow, everyone wants me to have an opinion and they all want it to be the same as theirs.

World is fucked up. I never thought i would read something like this. (I know u get lots of asks so it's ok if u r tired to answer this:) take care! <3 )
anon, thank you for being considerate of my mental health! i appreciate it ❤ now, getting to the post which you've sent me... i kinda cracked up reading it ngl 😂 i mean..... the story plays easily into right wing biases especially seeing as the article is from fox news lmao. what these ppl consider "anti-american propaganda" is simply knowledge about america's rich history of racism and imperialism. anyone who's picked up a book or even bothered to learn some history would be anti-imperialism - and seeing as how america is the largest imperial power in the world rn - would also be by extension, anti-american. also, i have the blog (who posted that article) blocked... and i only block two kinds of ppl on here: terfs and racists. and i'm pretty sure i remember this blog being extremely racist during the blm protests last year. so... i mean... idk why you sent me a link from two extremely racist sources.
also, i've been getting a couple asks similar to this in the last couple weeks - usually a link to some right wing blog/article/video often accompanied with some comment abt it like "i can't believe this stuff is happening"..... like no, this is information that is specifically being presented in a biased way. and idk if it's different ppl doing this or if it's the same person (you), but i just wanted to say that i really find it irritating and i want this to stop. i'm not interested in news cloaked in right wing narratives.

ngl I'm testy about ppl (few I've seen, I haven't looked very far) who ignore 13's development into grumpy passive aggressive closed off about trauma in this episode, when - as I much love them - 10 and 11 got meta for literally every inflection. (extra bitter cos my god is cold moody dealing relatable, and I adore her for it)
I gave up looking at other peoples opinions abt 13′s mood right about the time i found out a whole lot of men thought her smile at the dalek in resolutions was  Friendly.  Ok, that’s a lie, i didn’t care to do that Before i found that out, but it was the final nail in the coffin.
Honestly, every member of team tardis is getting short changed by a lot of people, not just 13. The Lack of a That Age white man to obsess over Always displays fandom bias in the most obvious way doesn’t it? People said 13 lacked depth throughout all of S11, yet a whole bunch of people and myself managed to get enough of a grip on her character that we’ve managed to predict a number of things that have now actually happened in s12 and we’re only 3 episodes in (idk about anybody else, but i didn’t watch the season a million times either), and tbh, a few of my other predictions look to be pretty on the money for happening soon, too.
This doesn’t even go into the rest of the cast who’re also getting shortchanged, for various reasons, I could Also write missives on Yaz’s facial expressions tbh??? Like, the sheer difference between Yaz’s sappy look at 13 back in s11 when she called her the best person she’s ever met contrasted with the sharp, loud anger when she confronted 13 about if she was lying? Incredible. Not to mention the utter Terror on her face at some moments in orphan 55, not sure if anybody’s giffed it yet but i will if they haven’t, but she was utterly terrified. What a Change.
Honestly, i’ve just found a bunch of people in the fandom who Do notice these things and talk about them and stick around them, tbh, but i’m never gonna be surprised that when a fandom is given a complex performance by a woman that they entirely miss all the subtleties because they Don’t Actually Care, no matter how much they falsely claim it’s that they dislike or don’t care about female characters because they’re written shallowly (or like, anybody But a white man in a certain age group, to be fair). I just sit there going ‘sure jan’.
It’s ironic though, I think Jodie’s performance as the doctor is the one who most Needs dissecting by fandom, because her doctor is actively Trying to take a strong hold of their own loud obnoxiousness and negative feelings and responses and suppress them, so you have to look harder to see it. The doctors before her who got micro analysed (ten-eleven) were often blatant more than subtle, and yet are the ones that get frame by frame dissections.
*shrug emoji* i just stick to the edit tag, maybe a ship tag or two, and stick around the people whose opinions i respect tbh, and ur never gonna totally block out the crap, but i’ve successfully limited it?? Like, i still get random men making snide comments on my posts that actually bother to analyse 13, saying it’s all crap and i’m making stuff up because she’s boring or flat or whatever, but eh.
if you wanna be mr. rude boring mckilljoy whatever, i don’t have to deal with it.
But her descent into moody grumpiness and not being able to deal with her feelings is so interesting!!! and it’s sad ppl ignore it. She’s still the doctor. Y’all loved stuff like this before when it was tennant doing it.
