Sherlock hates spending Christmas with his snobby parents. John has nowhere to go over the holidays. The heat in 221B is broken and their fridge is empty. Plus, Sherlock's parents will hate John. So of course Sherlock takes John along.

Very fun to read how they deliberately upset the bigoted parents and its results.

A delightful enemies to lovers, set in an art class. John hates Sherlock and Sherlock hates that he likes John. SOmehow, it still works out. So much fun!!

John Watson is recently home from Afghanistan, and during his daily jog, he catches the attention of a gorgeous busker. Too bad they can't work up the nerve to make a move before an assassination attempt tries to ruin everything.

Great sickfic, hurt/comfort and a Johnlock ending.

Chains of Heart ep 1

So I may have started watching Chains of Heart again because I needed to understand some things that I couldn't on my first watch (because this series is nothing if not baffling) and in the process I'm taking more notice of the colours (yes, I'm back on that ol' shit) because on my first watch I was aware of the green and red pairings as well as the blues but couldn't see a pattern to them (mainly because I was trying to figure out what the hell was going on and who all these people were!?!)...but now I'm looking with a more analytical eye.

Warning, this might get long.

I was, and still am sure that green and red are important colours for Ken and Din/Lue, but I'm also aware that blue is just as key. @respectthepetty has already highlighted how Lue and Din are the only two wearing blue in the series posters and that Ken and Lue exchange that colour quite often in the show...but I want to start with the other two colours first...because there were A LOT of them in ep 1:

First, when Ken is practicing shooting/working out (incidentally I would LOVE to know what's written in red on the wall there), then when he fights the gangsters in the alley and Lue shows up (Ken's black top also looks green here), and also when we see him crying over Din for the first (of many) times.

Then we get an interlude of blues paired with green and with red, and with both: Din has green and blue when we see him for the first time (and he eventually covers Ken in the green scarf), then in the parallel stargazing scene in Taipei the blue is paired with red. But when Din's supposed body is found, it's clothed in blue with his sister in green (and a green handbag - gotta have matching accessories!) and with blue and red in the background extras. Ingpha and Ae also bring this blue/green palette when they go to pay their respects (ha!) to Din's family.

I'll take a moment already to mention some theories... It seems all three colours are important to the main couple, but I wonder if blue is more for Ken and green for Din (despite the series posters - which could be Din and Lue wearing Ken's colour), and maybe red for Lue... Or from another perspective, it seems red is paired with green in the more dramatic/emotional scenes (and especially in connection to Din/Lue) and that blue might be for composure and/or masking/hiding (and masks, which we all know, have been an important motif in this show). Then the green on Sai makes sense above, as does the blue on Ingpha and Ae (who are definitely hiding something in connection to Din), and the red adds a passionate or dramatic flare... Who knows...

Anyway, let's go on with ep 1.

In the restaurant, the room is light and open and has all three colours when Hin and Payu show up. Is the room here mainly blue because it's Ken's 'safe space'? I do love the horizontal green and red stripes in the window though, as well as the three colours behind Ken - Din is always there in Ken's history but Lue is coming in from the side forever separated from who he once was...or? (Man the cinematography in this show is incredible.)

But then we're back to the drama, when Hin tells Ken about Din's body being found, and the green and red are drowning out the blue.

I love the scene on the bridge, not least because it's the first (of many!) times that Ken gets choked, but because the lights on the bridge change colour from red to orange to pink to a bit of blue and back to red...and alongside the constant green. I wish I could gif to show this better. But all during the fight green and red are evident.

I also love the flash of green on Lue's face as he turns to Ken on the ground after scaring the attacker away.

And then, as Ken looks to his saviour, the lights on his face go from red to, yep you guessed it, green.

After Ken gets deposited by Lue at the dodgy doctor's, he's bathed in red and green again, and his journey down the stairwell as he leaves is completely green (unless you take the brown door to be red), until the camera seems to be showing us the viewpoint of an onlooker in red (next to the red sign).

And back at the restaurant, and in contrast to earlier (which I've added here for an easy side-by-side view), the room is dark and enclosed, with more of the green and red overpowering the blue.

And lastly, I ADORE this shot, with the green hue of the video with Ken's hands lit red. Oh the drama!

Maybe this all means nothing. Maybe it's all just for the gloriousness of the colours and lighting and cinematography. BUT it could also Mean Things. And I'll update my theories (or make more) as I watch onwards and see how else these colours are used.

Mongolian history class, 2022, start of the semester. We're having a discussion on animal slaughter, featuring the one Mongolian student in our school.

The student explains that he's slaughtered animals himself, and there are two ways of doing it that avoid the spilling of blood. For a small animal like a chicken, you reach up into the chest of the animal and sever the arteries. For a larger animal like a camel, there's a spot on the forehead that, when hit hard enough, causes the animal to die instantly.

While this discussion is going on, a couple of the students are sharing something back and forth on their phone

The professor calls this out, asking if what they're sharing is more interesting than Mongolian animal slaughter

The room is dead silent for a few seconds. The two students look at each other awkwardly.

Eventually, one of the students pipes up:

"Well, the queen of England just died."

And without missing a beat, another student:

"Did they hit her on the head like a camel?"

An embroidery piece of the luggage from the Discworld series, ivory teeth, lolling red tongue and almost two dozen legs included. I somehow also managed to make it seem like it's grinning. Took me two months with two-thread embroidery. 😂
