Gustav Brunn's story begins in Wertheim, Germany, where he started a wholesale spice business after World War I. His business flourished until Hitler came to power in 1933, when Brunn was arrested and sent to the Nazi concentration camp Buchenwald during Kristallnacht, or "The Night of Broken Glass". 

His family paid a lawyer to bail him out, and he and his children fled to the United States in 1938, eventually settling in Baltimore. When they arrived, the family had little money and few prospects, so Brunn was encouraged to start a business using the industrial spice grinder he brought with him from Germany. 

Before opening his own spice company, Brunn worked for McCormick & Company but was fired for being Jewish. 

Honestly one of the scariest things about Hamas propaganda is seeing how easily we can be convinced of utter nonsense about history and indigineity.

Give the U.S. 300 more years, and we'll be sobbing, "My people have been indigenous to southern Maryland for centuries, hon! My great-great-great grandfather invented Old Bay right here! This is my native soil!!"
