dunno how much i've blogged abt my eye problems here but they've been getting worse lately -- the most life-impacting effect is that i can't safely drive, like, at all, because i am seeing double so bad i cannot see the god damned lane markings or tell how far away from me other cars are, but the most *irritating* is that i can barely read light-text-on-dark-background. because it makes the double vision worse. i can strain to read it briefly, but it gives me a headache to do it for too long. and i don't know if you've been on the internet in the past -- oh, i don't know -- fourish years? but at some point everyone decided dark themes were GREAT and """reduce eyestrain""" (LOL. LMAO EVEN) and if you don't use a dark theme you're some kind of n00b scrub.
which, like, i have enough self-confidence at this point that i don't actually care much if someone thinks i'm a n00b, but it gets more irritating when designers of ux interface stuff just fucking decide that, well, THEY like dark themes and goddamn it so will everyone else. at work we have a custom CLI for starting/stopping/reconfiguring deployments of code onto robots, and it's a wrapper around docker-compose, except the docker-compose ui colors presuppose a dark theme and there's this fucking light gray that's almost invisible in my beloved solarized light terminal colorscheme, and there's some, like. environment variable that you in theory can set to modify the colors but it doesn't work (possibly because of the custom CLI wrapper?) so i've resigned myself to just not being able to read the light gray docker compose output. i slacked someone in infra abt this and he MORALIZED AT ME ABOUT HOW DARK THEMES ARE BETTER and then just pointed me back at the environment variable and i was like "thanks! ^_^" because what else am i going to fucking do
or, more recently, the UI team updated our [thing] editor tool to use a new code editor that supports autocomplete! yay! except that for whatever reason they decided to make the default theme light-blue-on-dark-blue with like a 9pt font. in lieu of ripping out chris's throat with my teeth (which would have been difficult because he lives in canada) i just thought about it really hard and then, grumpily, made myself a custom build of the [thing] editor that uses solarized light + 14pt font size. but i swear to fuck the NEXT time i am forced by my employer to use some kind of tool that i need to hack or work around to be able TO FUCKING SEE IT i am going to start biting
:) (<- vibrating with barely-suppressed rage)

Hiya! I'm looking for indie programmers, artists, and more for my video game!
Introduction & Summary
We're developing "My Life: The Video Game," a narrative-driven, first-person simulation-visual novel game centered around a 16-year-old teenager named Taylor, who returns to high school after years of homeschooling. Our game emphasizes mental health and healing, featuring engaging stories, relatable characters, and gameplay mechanics that highlight the importance of empathy and self-care. This is a chance to contribute to a game with the potential to resonate deeply with players, encouraging empathy and self-awareness.
Available Positions and Job Descriptions
As a solo aspiring indie developer, I'm seeking skilled individuals to join me in bringing this project to life. Remote, freelance/contract-based positions are available in the following roles:
Unity Developer (C# Programmer): Proficient in C# and Unity, responsible for implementing gameplay features, collaborating with me, and ensuring the game runs smoothly.
2D Artist: Create 2D artwork and assets that align with the game's modern-day city setting and high school environment, including character designs, environments, and props. The art style is a unique mix of abstract (think “Journey”) and hand-drawn (think “Ori and the Blind Forest”), aiming for an atmospheric, emotional tone.
2D Animator: Bring characters and environments to life through fluid animations, working closely with the artist to maintain a consistent visual style.
UI/UX Designer: Design intuitive and visually appealing user interfaces that enhance the player experience and align with the game's themes.
All positions are remote, with the possibility of extending into long-term roles. Candidates with multiple skill sets are welcome to apply for multiple positions if desired. These are unpaid/rev-share positions, ideal for individuals passionate about storytelling and mental health awareness. When the project finds success, team members will be the first considered for compensated work.
What We Are Looking For
Ideal candidates are passionate about storytelling and creating meaningful gaming experiences. Strong communication skills, the ability to work independently, and relevant experience in game development are essential.
The Project and Our Mission
As the creator and solo developer, I'm an aspiring game designer passionate about creating meaningful stories and immersive experiences. I believe in the power of games to promote understanding and empathy around important topics like mental health. "My Life: The Video Game" is my way of contributing to this mission, raising awareness, and fostering a sense of connection and support among players.
The game follows the story of Taylor, a teenager who faces challenges as they return to high school after years of homeschooling. It tackles themes such as anxiety, self-discovery, and the importance of friendship and understanding. By crafting an engaging narrative and relatable characters, I aim to create a powerful gaming experience that resonates with players and encourages conversations about mental well-being.
Progress
For interested candidates who want to learn more about the project before joining, please visit the following link for a document with information on the game's project timeline, additional information for those interested, gameplay mechanics, and more: Game Design Document. For those that are chosen, a comprehensive document will be provided.
Contact
To apply, send a DM on Discord to @NeptuneCookies with your experience and a brief introduction.
Include the following information in your Discord DM:
Name and contact details
Role(s) you're applying for
Experience and qualifications
Brief introduction and your interest in the project
Additional materials, like portfolios or resumes, may be requested depending on the role. Selected candidates will be invited to a dedicated Discord server for collaboration.

NOTION RUINED GALLERIES
The change is so ugly that I may transition to making scripts a different way... I'm so sad... it genuinely ruins everything.
Did they fire their UX designers...? Like it's so fucking ugly.
I did pull a karen and complained (politely) through email; I know that someone was actually able to get notion to remove notion AI from their database completely, so maybe I can change the new page button with the galleries to be how they normally were for my scripts...
I'm not sure if it'll look the same to you guys if they do manage to change it for me.
UPDATE.... HELLO?????? WHAT????
Tumblr media
"This email was crafted by AI to get you answers fast..."
???????????????????
YOU COULDN'T EVEN RESPOND TO ME WITH AN ACTUAL HUMAN????????????????????
HELLO??? I CAN'T EVEN COMPLAIN WITHOUT SOME SORT OF AI COCKBLOCKING ME, WHAT????
I wasn't even rude about it TF.
"We have passed this suggestion along to our team..."
😀😀
Sure Jan.

A friend of mine wants to become a game designer without learning any other disciplines in game dev, he seems very sure this is possible but his confidence comes off as "idea guy" to me. I like thinking about design as well and how it could all fit together cohesively but I'm worried he's setting himself up for failure by not learning another discipline to go along with it. Am I correct in this thought or am I being an jerk?
It mostly depends on what kind of design career your friend wishes to pursue. Generally speaking, having at least some understanding of other disciplines is very helpful for a designer. If a designer doesn't understand the technical and asset constraints she's working with, it can make for a lot of wasted work. My grand idea of a huge battle between massive armies is mostly impossible if the engine can only handle 12 models animating on screen before the frame rate drops.
Tumblr media
If he wants a career in AAA games, he will need specialized expertise. That might mean working on combat, quests, cinematics, narrative, itemization, UX, enemies, levels/environments, or any of a number of other specialties. These specializations don't necessarily require external disciplines like programming or artistic skills, but they do require some pretty specific skills all their own. A cinematic designer doesn't need to understand how to code but does need to learn how to use tools like Source Filmmaker to stage and block cinematics. A level designer doesn't need to create the individual assets, but will need a rock-solid understanding of how the placement of objects and division of space can create places that are intuitive for players to navigate.
Tumblr media
If he wants to go into the indie space and work with an extremely small team, he's going to need to wear a lot of hats. Indie devs can't just come up with the ideas for the rest of the team to build them out; there just aren't enough people to handle that kind of workload. At the very least he'll need to create his own assets and/or write his own code. Small teams generally can't afford to have single-discipline specialists, so multidisciplinary generalists tend to succeed in this space. If you look at any indie game, you'll generally see a small team of a handful of devs who are each responsible for a huge amount of different kinds of work.
Tumblr media
If your friend is looking at a career in game design, he only needs to be multidisciplinary if he's going the indie/small team route. There's just too much work to be done without enough hands to do it within a small team. If he wants to work in AAA game dev, he will need to demonstrate that he has significant expertise in his chosen design specialty in order to put himself ahead of the hundreds of other candidates competing for the same job. In both cases, employers will want to see examples, either professional or amateur, of game design work that the candidate has done. I wish him (and you) the best of luck.

Happy Late Valentine's Day!
This is incredibly late but I wanted to just finish this properly and get this posted. I was doing research and came across Erotes and got interested in making some designs and as I'm currently taking an online course on UI/UX designers so I thought it would be fun to create modern versions of them as developers on a dating app.
First is Anteros, the Erotes of requited love and the head UX designer of the app, Cupid Connect. He's very eager to help as many clients get their happily ever after so he helps manage deadlines and making sure the app runs smoothly. Anteros may not be in a relationship himself, but he's very excited to see people find their happily-ever-afters through the app! Hedylogos is the Erotes of flattery so naturally he's their PR manager and UX researcher, connecting directly with clients to get their honest feedback so the app can be easily used and understood by all. He's a sweet talker and likes to keep the atmosphere light by bringing homemade candies to the office to pick everyone up. Hedylogos tends to lay it on thick when it comes to compliments but his friends learned to understand that's just how he operates.
Hermaphroditus, as an Erotes of androgyny, was hard to pin down as to what their role on the team would be but I thought having them be the UX designer overseeing the safety features of the app would be best. Love is meant to be safe in the end and they would like to make sure all clients can experience their app and avoid any potential dangers when using it. In their free time, Hermaphroditus likes to garden and will occasionally bring flowers to the office. Hymenaeus is the Erotes of marriage so he does a lot of the heavy lifting of UX development in managing clients' information and helping Anteros in the match-making department. I like to think he worked as a wedding planner before so Hymenaeus also works as an event planner for the app, so couples can meet on safer grounds to get to know one another. People tend to look at Hymenaeus when it comes to throwing the best parties.
Pothos is the Erotes of yearning so as the UI designer, he makes sure that not only does the app look pleasing to the eye, but that also the client can navigate the app and get the love they long for. He can relate to wanting to be with the one you love, as he's in a long-distance relationship at the moment so he enjoys this aspect of the job. When Pothos isn't video chatting with his sweetheart, he likes to go drinking with the rest of the team. Last but not least, is Himeros, the Erotes of unrequited love and desire, so he works as another UI designer. Himeros will sometimes add articles regarding intimacy tips on the home page so clients can use that as they will but he'd like to upload advice on what happens when finding love is difficult, especially given their clientele. It hasn't been approved since that might be a bad look for the app but Himeros still tries.
This was insanely long and I'm so sorry about that. It's all just been rattling around in my brain for two months so I just wanted it out and posted before February was done. I hope you all had a great Valentine's day and enjoying some now half-priced chocolates on sale!
Please do not edit or repost without permission. (I edited my commission prices!)

I'm exhausted. It's 10pm, I've read 108 pages on university webpage UX design and I have another 142 pages I need to read before tomorrow, and I need to retain it all because I need to be able to get my team all on the same page on a navigation strategy so we can move forward on the project I'm leading that is a month behind. I was hoping this book would have a definitive answer to a complex question that has been a sticking point and it doesn't. I'm still recovering from being ill last week, something is wrong with my foot making it hard to walk, and the percription coupon database ransomware hack means I can't get my mingraine meds unless I pay out of pocket for them because insurence won't cover them. A vandal turned my hose on and walked away and while the county will waive the bill for a leak, they won't for that. So I owe some amount of money that I will not know the extent of for several weeks and despite knowing I can probably pay it, I'm very anxious about it. I need to get my sprinkler system inspected before the end of the month and I still need to hire someone to fix my leaky door and repair the water damage to my ceiling, and I have 3 medical referals I haven't managed to follow through on, and I'm supposed to be dieting to get my cholestrol down but being hungry all day ontop of everything else just makes me want to cry
...ugh and I still need to do my taxes.

Role Assignment
HENifer – Producer / Manager Responsibilities: - Overall Project Management - Resource Management - Market Analysis - Marketing/Packaging Skills: - Planning & Communication - Team leading - Being obsessed with corn - Riddlemaster
Since this is my first time managing game development, it could be challenging to know which tasks need more attention and not getting distracted by less important ones. – 🐓
Isopod – Artist / Modeler Responsibilities: - Concept Art - Game Graphics - Screen Design (GUI) Skills: - Drawing - Graphic Design - Worrying about the details
Not getting lost in the details and spending way too much time on drawings/designs that aren't that essential, leaving me with no time to spend on the big artworks is going to be a challenge. – 🐛
Schira – Programmer / Designer Responsibilities: - Player Interface - Player Controls - Platform analysis - Game Engines Skills: - Programming - UI / UX Design - Voice of Reason & calming presence
Being open to unconventional or difficult to implement ideas is something I'm working on. I'm going to try to be more open to challenges. – 🍣
Chaos – Analyst / Tester Responsibilities: - Game-Play analysis - Target audience analysis - Quality Assurance Skills: - Honesty - Lots of gaming experience - Sowing chaos and drinking red bull
For me, it could be challenging to keep an unbiased view of the mechanics, especially later in development. The more you look at something, the more used to it, you get. – 💫

I'm still alive!!
Shocking, I know.
To be completely honest, my disappearance wasn't just out of boredom or tiredness - last year (12-14 months) was a hell of a ride, and sadly, most of it were various problems.
I've had to move to a rental. Unexpectedly, without any preparation, in 5 days after a terrible family situation happened. And even though I'm grateful now, the move itself and all the issues that came with it sent me to a terrible place, mental wise.
Not only that, but I've lost my job this June, because someone thought that trying to erase management problems and pinning all the fault on single UI designer is great idea (that's work at Russian Railways, folks!). I managed to get hired without any issues, debts or fines, but getting a new job after company like that is hard. That being said, if you or anyone you know is looking for an UX/UI designer, message me! *wink wink*
Health is yet another issue - I think this year I've got a bingo card of different illnesses, something which I wasn't looking for, but oh well.
That being said, I'm looking forward to getting back on a platform - I haven't stopped playing, and I've had my greatest team of @nappe-plays-the-sims @potential-fate @luverofralts @jasperskywalker!!! Best support, best swimming, best memes - love you guys 💜
See you all later, and don't forget to check out our new creation - Jubilant Accosts!
May the Watcher guide you! 👁️

So I've been looking through photomatt's responses to the situation (which he's since deleted but you can see them here https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/pyh4ca4v4mc0ggrklgd0i/h?rlkey=2se1p4911irku3mw42sp8htrz&e=2&dl=0) and I saw this:
Tumblr media
Seriously? You're on the hook for nuking a trans person's account for no reason and the last thing you're thinking about is how the site's design handles posts with high popularity? YOU'RE BEING ACCUSED OF TRANSPHOBIC BEHAVIOR AND YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT THE SITE'S FUCKING UX DESIGN?!
This is beyond pathetic. I'm starting to run out of words for how piss poor he's handling this situation.
[ID: A post from photomatt that reads "I'm continuing to get harassment and death threats here, in a way that is overwhelming the account. If it's hard for me to deal with this, with the team behind me, if nothing else this has given me a lot of empathy for how pile-ons must be totally unmanageable for users with the interface of Tumblr, especially the lack of basic things like bulk actions that have been in WordPress for a decade-plus." /end ID]

💥FINALLY!💥 My paintings are available to buy online in the UK.
The one thing I have wanted to sort out for years, somewhere I could sell and ship my physical paintings myself online (and amalgamate my digital offerings) - so while I had some downtime over this past year I plugged away at this project. Was such a learning curve (I'm used designing, then handing over to amazing teams of people doing UX and build usually) It also showcases my various digital pieces, linking out to buy those on places like Saatchi and Redbubble. Head over to my folio on Behance to see more info about the site production, or visit the site to have a nosey!

because i am a total nerd who actually loves their job i gotta brag for a second
so sometime...god, i think last year? at this point?? i found out about the concept of a research repository & decided to implement one for our usability team because i was basically tired of people not being able to find all of our research reports, or asking us to do projects we'd literally already done
so i took the initiative of researching research repositories (heh) from other companies, best practices, tools available, you know, i basically did a whole internal usability project with our team to design our ideal solution & presented it to IT
and it just so happened at the time i presented my findings IT was beginning to transition our internal company knowledge base from salesforce to something else, so they told me to hold off but they would make sure whatever new tool they selected would have a place for our repository
and because of corporate nonsense it took a few months so round the beginning of this year once the contracts had settled i got the green light to start figuring out how to adapt my idea to our new KB platform
and then there was another 3-4 of designing the information architecture & collaborating with the team to get all of our research migrated & tagged properly
and then another couple months of shenanigans while we waited for the company to have enough licenses for people to actually see the dang thing, but now the word is slowly spreading and it's just so so so exciting & satisfying to see more people discover it and tell me "i love this so much it makes it so easy to search a question and find data"
and our team has started using it as a hub to kind of keep all of our assorted knowledge on how to do ux research as well and i'm just 🥰
that was ME!!! i did that!!! i saw a user need and created a project to meet that need and it IS MEETING IT and that was MY WORK
HELL YEAH

Life update and more
Hey team!
For those who didn't know, for the past few weeks I've been organising myself to move countries. As of yesterday I am in Australia, so please be mindful of timezones and such! It's been a ride living in NZ for a few years but it was time to come back home. Commissions will be available in a few weeks once I move down the line and some more exciting news are to come.
I'm thinking about starting a twitch to talk ux, rps and maybe do some live code of premade skins - would this be something of interest? Still figuring it out my way, specially with timezones and such, but would be nice to see if there would be interest.
Hope you are all well and know my inbox is always open!

Another project, other people, same issues.
I've been working with UI/UX for 10 years now, and with HTML/CSS since 2018, mostly with quality of code and making sure everything is made the best way possible that makes sense for X project.
Again i'm working with people that doesn't seem to care if code is well made, just if we're doing the screens and the client is approving them.
Even tho they talk about being the best team and having a great stack of components to reuse, as soon as i look at how the Front dev is doing everything (we're a small team, 1 front, 2 backs and me), i spot alof of problems reguarding methodology, flexibility, just basic how-to and what to and not to do with CSS.
I'm not working with the CSS of the project yet, i'm doing design only, the manager sold to me that the Front is really good and he told he will make everything from scratch, sounds good.
Until it's not, me trying to talk to the manager about making a call and looking up the things i'm worried about, i get a "don't worry about it", "do the screens as we agreed, that's your job", "you're not on CSS yet".
The manager has no frontend knowledge, so to me, looks like he thinks the Front dev knows alot and it's an awesome dev for that, but analysing how he's writting everything so far, he is not.
I'm frustrated, again, i'm 32 and been working with these kind of situations all my life pretty much. Now they are making a big deal about me wanting to talk about it, saying we are a team and i need to be a team player, saying that we have priorities, etc.
I'm just saying, we should do things the right way from the beginning, since we're going to use these components for other projects later, why should we do it like stacking legos in the worst way possible and not caring about doing clean code?
The manager thinks it's not the time to do it like that but.. When i do CSS i always do the right way from the start, and it doesn't take more work, doing the way they are doing will take alot of rework later to "make it better" and prob.. from experience, it will not be made.
It's always the same, people without knowledge just wanting to sell and if i say we need to work better, i'm in the wrong.
Well, a rant, maybe i'll use this platform for these things?

Out of curiosity, what would the premise of your dream Persona game be?
Well, let's see. What were the strong points of each game?
Persona 3 Portable: Girl Route. Team members have important relationships with each other instead of just orbiting the MC. Extremely strong theme. Structured in such a way that the player doesn't control what day they have a mandatory dungeon/plot event, making for better pacing. Best final boss. Best music. Greatest of the Best Friend guys. My favorite UX by far.
Persona 4 Golden: Best cast. Most interesting mystery. Was extremely queer, especially for the time. Most naturalistic writing. Best villain (not final boss). Easily the most polished script. Combat had the best balance of things to do and friction without being overcomplicated or simplistic.
Persona 5 Royal: Most interesting, sprawling location. Social link bonuses that matter. Jawdroppingly good bonus campaign. Best exploration. Only MC that fully feels like his own person. And I'll admit it, it has the best social links for NPCs.
So, the best Persona game would have:
A protagonist with as much personality as Joker but not gender locked. For the love of god just make a gender neutral protag.
Set it in another city that's based on a real place since it feels like real life designs better locations than Atlus does off the dome.
Honestly at this point I would love to see Persona do a game that doesn't take place in high school. I wanna see some young adults getting up to shit. If you absolutely need the school structure, then have it set in university/college. But the need for structure for the calendar can come from anything.
When everyone is cishet, the cast suffers. P5R proved it. (Okay, it's also because P5R literally has more teammates so no one gets properly developed but the cishetness does not help.) Lets get some queerness back in the cast, it does absolute wonders.
Morgana should be in it again. I don't know why or how, but I do know that carrying a cat around everywhere made Persona 5 was part of why I finished that fucking game.
I personally like the structure of having a central mystery with uncertain mechanics to solve, I think that's really engaging and helps with the episodic nature of Persona. However, once the mystery is solved, DO NOT ADD IN ANOTHER MASTERMIND CHARACTER WHO IS "REALLY" BEHIND IT ALL. JUST FUCKING STOP! GOD I HATE IT. Stop having a really cool set up and then deciding in the last 5 hours that a Mean God Did It All, I'm so DONE with that shit. Fuck Izanami and Fuck Yarblegarble.
While we're at it, if one more Persona game turns out to be a parable on how them kids are on their phones too much, I'm done.
Regarding music, either: A: Create multiple main battle themes so if they Fucking Suck again like in P4 it doesn't make your players want to scream by hour 30. B: Just use "Wiping All Out" again for the main battle theme. We're never going to surpass it, why not accept that.
LET THE PLAYER START A ROMANCE SEPARATE FROM SLINK RANKS. If I hit level 10 on someone and decide later I wanna date them, I should be able to do that. That way I can actually meet everyone, THEN decide who I wanna kiss.
Just gimme back Igor using shiny key of solomon shit to combine personae, fuck P5's edgelord bullshit. Also Margaret bc she was funny and also really hot and flirty.
Bring Maruki back just for funsies.
there we go, the perfect persona game
