The Bad Batch

Here's a little theory for you to mull over; I sincerely wonder whether I am alone in thinking this. I could also be heavily exhausted over and influenced by the papers I had to polish off for some of my college courses, or perhaps motivated by the fact that I am re-watching The Bad Batch because most modern shows these days, in my opinion, disappoint. At any rate, here it is.

Why do we like the Bad Batch so much? What makes them relatable and/or realistic?

Upon meeting Omega, most of the Bad Batch behave in a very dad-like manner. This is not surprising, no. Plenty of memes and incorrect quotes have stemmed from this simple observation. They don't have all the answers and they don't know what to do with Omega half the time. That's the thing about dads... usually, they're just "winging it" and trying to do their best. Moms come with a built-in instinct to nurture. Dads come with a built-in instinct to protect and lead. Sometimes, dads aren't quite sure what to do with a crying infant or a struggling teenager.

Let's not forget... Hunter and the others are soldiers. That isn't to say they can't be kind or gentle; even the toughest men have their weak points. As a military brat, though, I have noticed that such a profession can mold a man, and at times they forget to "turn off" their seriousness when at home after having dealt with extremely hard situations. I really appreciate that the producers of this show didn't change Hunter and the others just to make them more approachable from Omega's standpoint. If they do change, it's gradual.

Do Hunter and the others think about the consequences of bringing Omega into their lives? *eyeballs toothpick man* With exceptions, of course. Well, until season three. The answer? Absolutely not. They believe they have the strength and ability to keep her safe, as most dads would. They believe they will always have that strength and ability. Let me break it down for you and give you a look into the brain of a dad:

Dad: *involved in a dangerous situation*

Dad: I can do that.

Dad: *remembers their child is with them*

Dad: Oh. Well, I guess becomes a life lesson. I've got you, kid. Just... don't tell your mom.

Dad: *keeps an eye out for anything suspicious*

Kid: *perfectly content*

I've heard it said that dads don't say "I love you" but show they love you. I personally have experienced both, but given the seriousness of most dads... I can see how that would be the case. At the very least, their actions speak louder than words. The Bad Batch are very much this way towards Omega. They put their lives on the line. They want to make her happy. Wrecker assembles a spot for Omega to call her own on the Marauder. Tech grabs her before an explosion can reach them. Echo has hugged Omega the most. Hunter is usually within three feet of Omega at all times.

The subtle gestures of kindness captivated all our hearts, I know.

Why?

It's Star Wars, a fictional universe. It's not complete fiction, though. Hunter and the others represent a specific kind of love. Fathers may be cautious and unsure at first, but eventually they want the kid by their side for everything. We've all seen the videos of dads using infants as pretend machine guns or making them dance, the kid's neck rolling lazily. Gently, of course. If they can't protect the kid from everything, they use themselves as a shield, which extends to good mothers, too, though that's not what this post is about.

Hunter and the others may be soldiers, but they embody the very spirit of fatherhood. This was such a wonderful theme to see develop despite the grittiness and action.

Phew, I feel like there was more I wanted to say, but I'm tired, so you're spared from more rambling.

Scoria and Sakura are best friends! It's so cute when I see the things they do together, and it makes me so beyond happy that they both came to live with me so that they could share their lives with each other. They absolutely insist on it, and does so much good for the other.

I can't imagine how else they could have found happiness if things hadn't worked out exactly as they did. Scoria has basically been Sakura's "emotional support snake" while she worked through things from her past I'll never fully know that caused her a lot of issues with panic and fear. Sakura knows this too, and looks out for her sister, the only one she truly trusts and feels completely safe with.

The moment they wake up they both want each other to snuggle and play with. Scoria loves to be affectionate with both me and her sister who seems to have not had this earlier in her life- but Scoria is showing her how nice it is not only directly but demonstrating with me and Sakura also trying, copying what she has seen her sister do.

Sometimes when one goes to check on the other they'll join in on... I'm not even sure what they were doing. But they had a good time while taking a mandated union break from digging tunnels for the isopods.

So happy I get to share in the adventures of these two best friends! It makes me so happy to see them living their best lives together, and being beyond content snuggled together with their found family.

Whenever someone tries to make a point about something the Konoha kunoichis, I need to make a pause and remind them how out of character they were in some of those moments.

Kishimoto pretty much abandoned Sakura and Ino's friendship and then tried to bring it back during the War arc. Ino lost her sensei and then her dad, and when was Sakura? You mean to tell me she wouldn't care? About any of it? Or when Sasuke was declared to be killed, do you mean to tell me that Ino wouldn't have run to find Sakura?

The way Hinata was written on Shippuden???? Naruto aside, people forget that Hinata refused to give up during the Chunning Exams and forced Neji to almost kill her if he wanted the victory. She was stubborn, she was prideful too, she had more going on than simply a crush on Naruto. She was told by her father she was a failure and yet she didn't give up on becoming a kunoichi, did she?

Then why is that Shippuden wrote her like her sole ambition was Naruto, hm?

And Tenten? She was MEAN when she wanted to be because she was highly competitive. We know that she wanted to train under Tsunade, so where did the death of that dream take her? She's such a powerful kunoichi and yet we know so little about her personality, her life...

We got "Ino and Hinata know some medic min techniques" in the most random way possible... We know Sakura would walk around with Hinata even, so what about their girl bonding moments during the genin to Shippuden years?

It made me so angry whenever the girls treated each other like strangers in Shippuden. So many stupid situations made to highly their teammates even if I meant to write the girls out of character...

The way Lovely Runner stayed winning right up until the end. God-tier OTP, and OST that was nothing but bangers, the best kpop boy band to never exist, and the most adorable heroine who will now be a forever fave with me. It even managed to do the impossible and made me fall in love with the most green flag hero by giving him the swagger of a kpop idol who is also the most embarrassing loser in love to exist. Throw in the most competent 2nd male lead who turns out to be the true hero and a finale that was nothing but fluff and it was pretty much perfect from start to finish.

Also, lmao at the fate the of the evil taxi guy. He gets hit by the kdrama White Truck of Doom, drowns, and the show proceeds to not give two shits about him ever again. Why spend another second on that guy when we can watch Im Sol and Sun Jae be stupid and in love with each other. What a flex!

We're at episode eight (two thrirds through already. how?!). It seems my prayers have been answered and after weeks, I was finally not left scrambling to pick up my organs that had fallen out of various orifices at the shock of how the episode ended. (dude, if they had ended the episode with Home flatlining my hair might have spontaneously turned completely gray from stress)

Anyway I'm back to not so seriously tell you about all the things in this episode that reinforced my belief that Home and Peach love each other. Let's go!

Home starts crying at the mere mention of Peach's name. With absolutely no alcohol needed to ease the flow of his tears.

No one is questioning for a second what/who is motivating Home's ghost into action. Because it's clear to whom his strongest attachment is.

The revival ritual call's for something Home loves and the only thing they can come up with is Peach('s cooking).

And Peach is willing to be completely unhinged and illegally cook in a hospital for a chance to get Home back.

And they were right. It works. The smell of Peach's cooking does actually lead Home back to his body. (until the stuggle with security rips the string off Home's finger)

Back when Home first stayed over with Peach and Pangpang, he was bickering with Peach over the amount of chillies in Peach's cooking.

And Pangpang filmed them and made ship edits with it. And is now using that to prove to Peach that Home loves his cooking. (And making up quotes to go with it, but Peach was fully ready to believe that Home could have said that and he was flatterd about it too, so.)

Of course this is where Home's limbo is. In the place that he claimed for himself, finally made into a proper home by the presence of Peach and Pangpang that's visible all over it.

Grandpa is, aside from Peach, Pangpang and Home, themselves, possibly the only other person who understands just how much they have come to mean to each other. He must be glad that his grandson has finally found his "home".

After Home flatlines Peach is sobbing and begging at his bedside clutching his arm. And I'm not saying you wouldn't do that with your friend but this is clearly romance coded. (Are his cries what led Home back to his body in the end, because Peach is something he loves and he's still inside the thread circle and even though the thread isn't attached to his finger anymore maybe it's still working because Peach is surely touching his fingers or maybe it's because of the heart monitor finger clip thingy that's attached at the same side that somehow counts? Who knows. I'm not familiar with the rules of this religious/spiritual practice)

And then Home, who thought that no one would want him alive anyway, walks in and sees Peach begging him to wake up and Pangpang on the floor looking shell shocked and he realises that despite everything he is loved and at the same time it must break his heart to see his family like this because of him.

But he eats Peach's food and that brings him back to life and Peach is still holding on to him

So Home can finally do what he's been trying to for the last episodes.

The last thing Home wanted to do before he died, the first thing he does once he's back to life. He finally apologises to Peach. (And I feel a little smug about it because Home waking up with Peach at his bedside and the first thing he says is "I'm sorry" is exactly how I imagined/hoped it would happen and I'm glad I was right)

And after he has finally said the words out loud, Peach hugs him and they hug for 24 seconds of showtime but we cut to a new scene before they stop so in the story they probably stayed like that for a long time and eventually Pangpang joined in and their little family was finally back together.

But also the way Peach is holding on to Home like he's never letting him go again and

the hand on the neck?!

the thumb on the ear?! Please, they are so clearly in love with each other.

Peach has brought back the "More than friends - less than lovers" shirt to celebrate them getting back together (though he thinks he's sneaky and can hide it with this somewhat out of place looking plaid jaket-shirt-thing) And it's the first time he's worn it in Home's presence (the last time was at the beginning of ep 5 when he had the nightmare about chef hong's death, so only Pangpang saw him in it)

And Peach, for lack of clothing options to signal his feelings, is left to look at Peach with absolute heart eyes.

is still not experiencing an abundance of moments. But it was, of course, Pangpang who noted that another member of their family was still missing.

(And despite their best efforts to cast suspicion onto Kan, I don't think she'd try to kill Home. She did seem worried about him and defended him against the car mechanic. But we'll see next week, I guess)
