I must admit, after finishing HOTD Season 2 I preferred it more when both sides were more shades of grey than the show simply picking to be Team Black all the way. The season's tagline was to pick a side but they don't make the Greens look in any way tolerable, the only good one doesn't even like being there and gives Aemond spoilers of his death (so the previously unclear outcome of the battle of God's Eye is gonna be no surprise to anyone now), the bad things Team Black does is only Daemon and he has a whole Macbeth scenario, gets the GoT Supercut via Weirwood vision, and suddenly all is forgiven because he doesn't want the crown anymore (again, but for real this time). Idk I wish we did better, especially with Aemond. They moved him from mercurial, strategic and, in the book, implied to be a better king than Aegon (they say he wore the crown better than his brother) and turned him into a war-hungry, ignorant, man-child - just another bitter prince after the throne. Also they make him crueler to Helaena rather than lean on his prior softness towards her. The season wasn't bad, but it could've been a lot better.

Apologies if this comes across as a bit of a rant, don't mean it to be, but I have seen some really bad takes over the last few days. That being said these are my own opinions, no obligation to agree or disagree with them, I am just sharing my own opinions. Also some of these opinions may or may not be unpopular depending on what side you are on, I am fully team black so these views are in support of that.

Daemon is not a morally black character, he's a morally grey character, or at least he is supposed to be, he is literally described as being equal parts light and dark. So I'm getting tired of all these posts talking about how its ok for Daemon fans to like him but they should accept that he is a villain/morally black character. No he isn't either of those things and so when we complain that the show cut all his good moments and we are frustrated that they seem to have kept only his darker moments, its not because we don't thing he shouldn't do bad things, its because by not keeping him balanced and keeping those lighter moments as well they've mischaracterised him. The fact that people can sit there and make these posts saying he's morally black is just proof of how much they mischaracterised him in the show. I haven't even read the book but even I saw that quote going around about him being equal parts light and dark before the show came out, the promotion of his character often talked about this characterisation of him and it was what made me excited to see his character when I knew nothing else about him. So yeah its annoying and frustrating when the show didn't fully deliver on this.

Rhaenyra's eldest sons did not usurp Driftmark from Baela and Rhaena because Baela and Rhaena never stood to inherit it. Laena was never heir to Driftmark, Laenor was. So this argument that I keep seeing being pushed that Rhaenyra is trying to steal Driftmark from the girls is pointless and not true at all. The petition Rhaenyra puts to the crown is against Vaemond inheriting Driftmark over her sons, the girls had nothing to do with it, they themselves never even put themselves forward as claimants. The closest either of the girls came to inheriting Driftmark was when Rhaenys, in private, asked Corlys to name Baela heir. Corlys immediately shut it down and stuck to his decision to have Lucerys as his heir. So no Driftmark was never stolen from Baela or Rhaena because they were never at any point named heirs to it, you can't steal something from someone when it was never theirs to start with.

As for the marriage proposal Rhaenyra suggests between her sons and Laena's daughters, again this was not Rhaenyra trying to stop Baela and Rhaena from getting Driftmark (because they never stood to inherit driftmark) as I have seen some argue. The reason for the proposal was to smooth things over with Rhaenys and win back her support because Rhaenys believed Rhaenyra had Laenor killed so she could marry Daemon. It was also a very very good deal. Within a generation the Velaryons would have their blood on both the iron and the driftmark throne.

Rhaenyra was in an impossible situation and that is why she has 'bastards'. Yes I am putting it in quote marks because I don't consider them bastards as Viserys publically announced them as trueborn heirs and in doing so made them legitimate, I've made a whole post on it already so I won't cover that argument here but anyway. Her and Laenor tried but didn't succeed at having a child that was biologically their own. So Rhaenyra used Harwin to produce her heirs. But both Rhaenyra and Laenor considered those boys as their own, its not like Rhaenyra was trying to pull the wool over Laenor's eyes, he was in on it and he agreed to it, as did Harwin. Rhaenyra was under a huge amount of pressure to produce heirs, it was consider her duty, what else was she supposed to do? It was her blood that was important not Laenor's in this case, so as long as by blood they were hers that was the most important thing. I saw some say that she just should have not married Laenor, which honestly wtf, because she didn't have a choice. She had to marry Laenor because her father, the king, commanded her to. They both agreed to do their duty then see other people, so I am confused by the claims made that Rhaenyra only cared about her own pleasure and not her duty, like please she took her duty as heir and to the prophecy her father told her about very seriously. If the, she shouldn't have married Laenor, argument wasn't bad enough I then saw some saying well she just shouldn't have had children and should've named Alicent's children her heirs and everyone would have won. Umm, yeah, no, its not that simple. Like Rhaenyra had a duty to produce heirs, like it was made very clear in the show right from the first episode that a good King/Queen provides the realm with heirs, that's the society in which they live. The whole brother as an heir thing is a back up but Rhaenyra would still be expected by the houses and the people to produce as many heirs as possible. If Rhaenyra had chosen not to have any children the realm would only consider that proof that she wasn't fit to rule, it just would have given her a whole other set of political problems to deal with. I mean its the whole reason why Viserys was pressured into taking a second wife, he had heirs, Rhaenyra and Daemon, but this wasn't considered enough he was still under pressure to produce more. For the realm heirs meant security, for the royal house it meant ensuring the throne stayed in their family, continued with their own line. They live in a time when people died really easily of infection and disease, they didn't have modern medicine like we do, babies and children were particularly vulnerable, as was shown by Aemma talking about how many children they had lost. Which is why Aemma and Viserys tried time and again to have more children, why Alicent and Viserys had several children, why Rhaenyra has multiple children, because it is expected of them, because its considered their duty, the more heirs the better. So no Rhaenyra couldn't just shrug and go, oh well guess I won't have any children, my brothers can just inherit after me. I mean you have to think about the way these people think, that possibility would never have even entered Rhaenyra's head, or anyone else's for that matter. All Rhaenyra knows, due to the society she grew up in, is that as heir herself she has to produce heirs of her own, not rely on her father's other children to continue the line. When she realised she couldn't have children with Laenor she came up with another solution, with Laenor in the know and agreeing with it. Yet there are some out there that seem to think this makes Rhaenyra a villain or that she had bastards just because she is privileged and she does whatever she wants and thinks the rules don't apply to her. She wasn't any of these things, she was just desperate and lets be real just as trapped by duty as Alicent, just in a different way.

Rhaenyra's situation with her three sons is in no way comparable to Cersei's and her children. First of Rhaenyra is of the ruling house, it's her blood that is royal and her blood that matters, her boys all still have royal blood. In Cersei's case it was Robert with the royal blood not Cersei so the fact that her children only have her blood is what makes her children's heritage a problem more than them being illegitimate. Rhaenyra did not lie to Laenor or try to deceive him into thinking they were his by blood. So when he calls his sons his heirs he does so knowing that biologically they are not his. If he had lived to take the driftmark throne and he named Luke his heir he would have done so knowing that they didn't share blood. Robert had no clue that Joffrey wasn't his kid, Cersei did go out of her way to deceive him into thinking they were his, including getting him drunk and that getting into bed with him so he would think they had laid together and so he wouldn't question the birth of her children. So when Robert named Joffrey his heir he did so without any knowledge that it wasn't his son. Sorry but these two situations are completely different so you can't use one to justify another.

So the next thing I need to talk about is this, people don't seem to understand how bad it is that Alicent was trying to out Rhaenyra's sons, or why it was that she was pretty much the only person to do so. If Alicent got her way and Rhaenyra's children were acknowledged as bastards publicly then not just Rhaenyra and Harwin, but those three innocent boys could all be killed. That's the potential consequence of Alicent's actions, of her oh so righteous mission to reveal the truth. She is told on numerous occasions how dire the consequences of her insinuations are and yet she continues with them anyway, against the king's orders. On top of that she also makes public insinuations about Laenor's sexuality which again could get him killed. So Alicent is out here risking the lives of Rhaenyra's entire family and yet I'm supposed to support her and feel sympathy for her? No sorry, if everyone else also knows and keeps their mouths shut then so too can Alicent. I mean take Corlys and Rhaenys for example they too know that biologically those boys aren't their son's and they talk about it, but they do it in private. Even when Rhaenys suggests having Baela as heir she says they'll tell people they are honouring Laena's memory as an explanation to why Luke wouldn't be heir, she doesn't suggest hey lets tell everyone Rhaenyra's kids are illegitimate and so we're naming Baela heir, because she knows the consequence of that and whatever resentment she has towards Rhaenyra she won't risk those boys lives because of it. Apparently Alicent has no such qualms when it comes to those boys safety. People act like Alicent trying to out Rhaenyra and her children is some righteous mission but lets be real she's doing it because it serves her own interests. If Rhaenyra and her sons are exiled or killed then its her children who become the next heirs, its got nothing to do with right and wrong or holding Rhaenyra responsible for actions or whatever. Also this is kind of a side note but the thing I also find frustrating about Alicent's little crusade is that she can't know for sure. Like yes I know we as the audience know and everyone suspects it but nobody in that world can know for sure. It's like that story Viserys tells when Alicent brings it up to him, about the black mare, the silver stallion and the chestnut foal. Alicent tries to prove Viserys' point that genetics are weird, by asking if he was there during the act and if not how can he be sure. Here's the thing, the same can be applied to Alicent, unless she was there in the room when Rhaenyra's children were conceived then how can she know for sure that they aren't Laenor's, I mean the guy does have Baratheon blood on his mother's side which could explain the boys features.

The King's word is law and the King can't do whatever the hell he likes are both true statements. I am constantly seeing this argument made that well Viserys is the king so he can do this and he can choose to do that and its all bull, sorry but I think the show makes it clear that whilst yes Viserys as King has alot of power and his word is law, but that doesn't mean he can do what he likes without any consequence. You know which kings do whatever they like, the bad ones. Joffrey, The Mad King, Maegor the Cruel, (spoiler warning for got and fire and blood) and Joffrey was killed by a member of one of his houses, Lady Olenna at his wedding to her granddaughter, The Mad King was killed by his own King's Guard and Maegor was found with his slits wrist on his own throne with no one knowing who exactly might have killed him because he pissed off that many people. So this idea that just because he is King he can do whatever he wants is so false. People really want to paint Viserys out to be this terrible abuser of Alicent, and look I think Viserys made a lot of poor decisions but I don't think you can make the claim that he abused Alicent. Now Alicent's father I could see an argument made for him being abusive to her, he pretty much pimped his daughter out. But here's the truth of it, Viserys was also a victim of Otto's schemes, he was also a piece that Otto used in his political games, he was also manipulated and gaslit by Otto. I feel like some are so much on the lets hate all men bandwagon that they just see every one of them as this evil monster out for their own ends, when really they are all just imperfect characters, some are worse than others but Viserys is far from the worst of them. I've seen people say that Viserys had a choice whether to get remarried or not and actually no he didn't, not really. We saw what the consequence of him rejecting Laena's hand was, Viserys spent the next couple of episodes trying to fix the political problems that followed and the time span of that was four years. The houses of the realm all have resources that the crown needs, whether that be soldiers, ships or gold etc. If the King doesn't keep them happy they can withhold these resources or plot against the King and well then the crown is kind of screwed. So really the only real choice Viserys had when it came to remarrying was whether it should be to the 12 year old Laena, a child, or the 15 year old Alicent which whether we like it or not in their society at 15 Alicent was considered of age and a woman and not a child. So to be fair given the choice between the two it makes sense that he chose Alicent, one because she was a woman grown (in their eyes) and two because for the last 6 months she had been coming to his bed chambers and having talks with him and helped him through his grief. I think its clear that Alicent suffered through that marriage but I don't think the culprit for that is Viserys, its Otto that put them both in that position for his own greed and ambitions. I don't think Viserys was particularly happy in that marriage either but it comes back to what I said above and the expectation to provide heirs. And lets be real here Viserys let Alicent get away with a lot of stuff that other Kings would have likely punished her severely for. Viserys just wanted to keep the peace, like him or not, he was far from a monstrous tyrant some seem to paint him as.

There is no prove that Rhaenyra ever actually intended to kill her siblings when she ascended the throne. I see this one quite a bit, that Alicent and TG had to usurp the throne because otherwise Rhaenyra would have no choice but to kill them as they were a challenge to her claim. But we are never given any indication that Rhaenyra planned to hurt her siblings and there were other solutions, she could ask them to publicly bend the knee and swear fealty to her, if other houses rose up in Aegon's or the other children's name then she could put them in a position where they can not inherit for example the Night's Watch or a position of honour as a Queen's Guard or as a Maester. Or she could have sent them into exile if it really came down to it. I mean even after they usurp her throne Rhaenyra still shows restraint and is concerned with the blood that would be shed if they go to war so I don't think it likely that she would have just killed them if they didn't try to challenge her.

The animosity between TG and TB's children is mostly Criston Cole's fault but also somewhat Alicent and Otto's fault. I mean Cole really pitted those boys against each other in the training yard, matching Aegon against Jace despite it clearly being an unfair match and also encouraging Aegon to be cruel in his fight against Jace, its no environment for kids to learn in. Instead it just fuelled the animosity between the boys. Add to that Alicent whispering to them about how Rhaenyra and by extension her boys are threats to them and its not surprising that the boys don't get along. When it comes to Alicent though I do think alot of her fear was instilled in her by her father and that is then trickling down into her own children. Otto tells Alicent that Rhaenyra will kill her children and puts that fear in her and then in turn Alicent passes that same message to her children, that the blacks are the enemy. Also I see alot of people claiming that Luke is a bully, that seems to be the justification for Aemond killing Luke, its well Luke took out Aemond's eye and bullied him about not having a dragon. Here's the thing though we only really see one instance of Jace and Luke bullying Aemond and that is the instance with the pig and it was clearly actually instigated by Aegon, the same Aegon who would grow up to enjoy watching children fight each other, which I again blame Cole for, more trickle effect in my opinion. We actually see a lot more scenes of the greens antagonising and bullying the blacks than the other way around. And I know what some will say, but Luke took Aemond's eye out. Which yes, and that's terrible but if you actually watch that fight scene again, the black's children are upset about their mother's dragon and are expressing that, the only one who was actually hurling insults and calling people names is Aemond, whilst the others are fearful Aemond is enjoying it. And before anyone comes at me, no I am not saying that its ok that Aemond lost his eye, nothing about that whole fight was ok and I mostly once again blame the adults, like was no one watching these kids, oh wait just remembered t was supposed to be Cole watching the kids that night so I guess I'm just going to blame him for this one too. The point is though we see Aemond, knock Jace twice in the training yard unprovoked, we see Aemond calling them names etc in that fight with the others, we see Aegon using Jace and Luke to bully his little brother, we see Aegon making vulgar comments to Jace and Baela at the dinner after their betrothal, Aemond making toasts insinuating the boys illegitimacy even after everyone had made up and causing a fight to break out. When it comes to Luke we see him, play the prank with the pig, slash Aemond's eye whilst trying to stop him from bashing Jace's head in with a rock and smile at a pig, which we don't even know for sure if he was smiling at the pig as you can hear Rhaena laughing next to him and so he could have been laughing at something she said. I'm not really sure those last two would count seeing as one was in smile defence and the other may or may not have even been about the pig, even if it was Luke just laughed and then turned away he didn't actually say anything. So like given how much more we see Aemond and Aegon antagonising Jace and Luke, whose the real bully?

Anyway think I've ranted on long enough. I've just done a rewatch of the first season so I've got a lot of thoughts currently. Might make some posts about them, we'll see.

House of the Dragon 2x3 episode reaction. I have alot of thoughts, bare with me.

The episode was eh but that's mostly just because it's the calm before the proverbial shitstorm.

BAELA “I COULD SMELL BITCH FROM A MILE AWAY AND IT'S ON SIGHT” TARGARYEN, HOW I LOVE YOU!! MOONDANCER IS BEAUTIFUL! MY BRAVE GIRL DID HER THING. IKTR POOKIE!! HER SASSING RHAENYRA, 10S across the board. I know Rhaenyra is tired 😩

I'll always feel for Rhaena, she finally was able to speak although, I wanted more dialogue from her, it's fuckin owed atp HBO, but you could feel her resentment, her anger and her frustration during her scenes. I feel so bad for her cause the only people that are really looking out for her are Rhaenys and Baela. Daemon don't give af, Rhaenyra is trying to find a balance between being a mother and queen but you could see that there is a distance between her and Rhaena even though she lived with them instead of on Driftmark with Rhaenys. When Rhaena first accepted the “mission” and walked off you could tell Rhaenyra wanted to tell her something but it looks like she doesn't know how to talk to her, which is fuckin sad. So those headcanons of her probably only having her brothers to talk to and Luke by extension makes her situation even worse. The glass child fr. So she's most definitely claiming a dragon this season and honestly good on her. Although if they do write Nettles out I'm gonna be pissed. That scene with Baela and her warmed my heart though. Another thing Rhaenyra totally brushing her feelings aside and being like my sons, my sons, my sons is totally not helping her character either. I'm honestly mad they fumbled the majority of the team black relationship dynamics. Rhaena going to ward is literally foreshadowing her future in the dance so I'm not mad at her, she did become everything Rhaenyra wanted her to be, was literally the last of the Targaryen's future and history before Dany came along. I know one thing though they better give her Morning idgaf what they gotta do. That is one important part of the plot I won't forgive if they rewrite it.

Honestly I don't give a damn who gets pissed but fuck Corlys. I said what I said and I'm not taking it back. I don't ever want to hear another “Rhaenyra and her bastard boys usurped Rhaena and Baela”, Corlys is just as misogynistic as the rest of the men in the realm. In the books the succession of the Driftmark throne was up in the air but they rewrited it in the show and yes Baela and Rhaena didn't have a claim to it cause Laenor was Corlys firstborn in the show and he did legitimize his boys but he had an opportunity to make Rhaena Lady of the Tides, she would've been either way had she married Luke as intended but he didn't and you wanna know why? Take a guess, exactly. It goes without saying. I understand him not naming Joff, he's heir to the throne in case anything happens to Jace but he could've named Rhaena and he didn't. So fuck him. Also foreshadowing for the end of the dance.

I wish y'all could've heard the long drawn out exhale that I let out knowing we gotta be see Larys Clubfoot ( the old man was so real for that name 🤣🤣😭😭🤣) more on my television screen. So Crispin, Clubfoot and Gwayne and Aegon, I can't win. Battle of the incels and they're failing upward while we lose 💔. I'm sick. The only thing I like about Gwayne is him irritating crybaby Cole and immediately clocking that there's something going on with him and Alicent. He's messy, I could appreciate that.

Young Rhaenyra was a nice little surprise even though the context for the scene was dark. Daemon getting his death notice in Harrenhal (also foreshadowing) and his dream sequence was peak if you ask me.

I need Rhaenys to never ever in her life speak on Luke's name again. I understand what she was trying to say but even having the audacity to insinuate that it's Luke's fault the war even started cause he took Aemond's eye (he was literally trying to protect his brother and her granddaughters) and that Otto and Weak King Vizzy T council wasn't planning to usurp and kill Rhaenyra from the start is blasphemy to the highest degree. Her clocking Rhaenyra's council was good though. The men in this show are just so ughhhhh. Why did they give Rhaena and Rhaenys an off screen goodbye when she was one of the most important people in her life and especially since she's gonna y'know...

Helaena telling Alicent she forgives her is so gonna hurt when we remember in future episodes. This is gonna greatly contribute to Alicent's suffering especially when Helaena goes off the deep end. She's going to realize she had a hand in destroying one of the purest and greatest things in her life and we the viewers are gonna be hurt.

Didn't expect to get a full blown view of Aemond hanging out but okay I guess. There he goes again not addressing his problems (his bum ass older brother, his nuisance, his bane of his existence) and going to take it out in somebody else though 🥱.

Sept Rhaenyra had the same energy as Arryk pretending to be Erryk and you can't convince me otherwise. I know they were gonna do a reunion between the two but Rhae still trying to be a pacifist and not knocking Alicent's head about even a little bit was stupid to me. She literally tormented her and her children for years! What more was there to say? Get in the field Rhaenyra!! Do you guys really think Alicent didn't know Viserys wasn't talking about her son Aegon? Let's all bffr for a second. She knew and they wanna chalk up the entire dance to it being a mistake is rather irritating. Alicent being prideful and can't admit to her wrongdoings even after the fact that Rhaenyra told her the prophecy is not in the least bit surprising. It just cheapens the outlook on the whole “Dance of the dragons” honestly.

I hate the fact that the writers spun the show into an Alicent vs Rhaenyra situation when the whole gist of season 1 and the books was Rhaenyra vs Misogyny. Women not being allowed to rule because they're women y'know.

In terms of screen writing HOTD IS WEAK and I'm blaming the writers for not reading the source material before putting pen to paper. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying they can't rewrite certain stuff, it's a given with the limited amount of episodes per season, sometimes you do need new plots to shock the viewers and you can't really get into everything but at certain points it's downright ridiculous. Spinning the conflict into a misunderstanding is stupid and I stand by that.

Daemon didn’t betrayed Rhaenyra. Her allies didn’t betrayed her, it was her who betrayed them first. I’m tired of this discourse of painting Miss Maegor (very insulting to compare him to Rhaenyra, unlike her, Maegor has achievements and is recognized as a monarch) as a victim of her council. Let’s see how Rhaenyra the merciful rewarded her loyal allies who did all the heavy lifting during the war, the only reason of why she’s still alive:

Corlys Velaryon: imprisoned and sentenced to death

Addam Veleryon: ordered execution

Nettles: ordered execution

Daemon: conspiraced behind his back to murder a teenager he sexually groomed

Lord Mooton: order him to murder Nettles in her sleep and violate her guest rights (literally the worst crime you could ever commit in Westeros)

She’d probably have still been alive had she not went mad queen, but Missy Anne alienated her base (minus Addam who still tried to prove her psycho behind wrong) and paid the price for it.

Anon, you may have to just block me. I wrote several times abt this. I wont' deny that this indeed alienated many allies, however...

A) The Betrayals against Rhaenyra BEFORE Addam's Arrest'

Ulf & Hugh (her once-allies)

Yes, Rhaenyra did all those to her allies...after Ulf & Hugh (her first pair of allies who were also dragonriders) at the Battle of Tumbleton, which was a disastrous result for the blacks and & win for the greens along with the resultant Sack/rape of the entire town. Not before.

The issue came up in response to the plans for making Addam the default guardian of KL in place of Rhaenyra's sons; the council people questioned his loyalty after the Whole Two Betrayes (Ulf &Hugh) thing. Now let's get into F&B's relation of why/how Rhaenyra tries to imprison Addam ("Rhaenyra Triumphant"):

Then both Corlys & Gerardys tried to argue for Addam & Nettles (before Mysaria's brought in):

This was a obviously huge deal, as non Targ dragonriders will always be highly potential issue not only for Targs but the entire realm...we saw what happened the last time there were so many dragonriders/units at once...:

The Greens

The greens were not her allies, but theirs was still a betrayal against her bc she was the heir and their future queen...they usurped her against the King's wishes and were thus nearly the same sort of "subjects" as as Robert was Rhaegar's, Brynden was to Daeron/Aerys II, Viserys (II) to his brother Aegon III, etc. etc.

Aegon (II), was part of that betrayal and it coincides with the blood betrayal of the Amethyst Empress and the Bloodstone Emperor. Aemond, her brother/"subject", killed her son Lucerys. Another betrayal, compounded with kinslaying.

Borros Baratheon

The same goes for Borros, another not-ally. Though they never met, his father made that oath and freely, binding him to that oath ideologically. Similarly to how eveyr house if boudn to House Targaryen after the Conquerors conquered Westeros. All of them and their kids for perpetuity became, legally, bound to the Targs and their heirs/line. For stupidly and cowardily turning Luke out and allowing Aemond to go after him, he is also complicit in Luke's death. For joining the greens at all, he betrayed Rhaenyra.

Yeah, and?

Once again, I'm not denying that her imprisoning/planning to torture Addam was a bad move AND not entirely sensical just as Gerardys said, since he has shown no hint of planning betrayal. (Corlys only said Addam & Alyn were both "true Velaryons" & that Nettles fought bravely back in the Gullet battle.)

At the same time, while she was calling for Addam's execution, she wasn't calling for an execution. who knows, maybe the fear of execution was well founded bc...you know, after Ulf & Hugh's betrayals no one wanted to really gamble on someone taking pains to investigate the truth or just not want to go through torture. Still, I am saying that she was ordering his arrest/torture...not his execution. Which shoes there is a chance that she was intending on doing some pretty horrendous investigation--investigation nonetheless. It appears Rhaenyra was trying to be cautious--for her and under this sort of context. And I don't blame Addam for either freaking out or wanting to prove himself without falling into the indignities of torture, but this point had to be made.

I am saying that on top of Rhaenyra's allies having had definitely betrayed her, others who also legally should have been loyal to her betrayed her & in the worse ways. Even Viserys kinda betrays her for how he dealt with/didn't deal with Alicent/Otto to finish them once and for all--which don't need execution-death but the man also failed Rhaenra many times so that he could keep Alicent (love)-the Faith/the Hightower (power) influence close in a false sense of doing his duty. Book and show. Which means that GRRM is trying to tell us that this woman developed a strong sense of distrust for people around her who weren't Daemon or her kids and it got worse once her kids actually started dying. This is the storyline.

Even with the whole Nettles thing, Septon Eustace tells us that she didn't "act at once", but she decides to check in with Mysaria:

Compare this to The Princess & the Queen's relation of how Rhaenyra hadles Addam&Nettles:

A -- She was still very paranoid but she also still needed dragons to patrol/protect KL instead of her own sons. who the text very clearly states--at least Joffrey--were thought to go scout/watch for the city...but both were not even in their teens AND were her heirs. Plus Jacaerys and Lucerys' deaths would not make her nor most mothers think of even putting their kids/heirs in such proximity to any idea of harm's way.

B -- Notice how Rhaenyra's weird rant abt Nettles' magicness, seduction, Mysaria's vivid imagery of Nettles carrying Daemon's kid as well as the Rhaenyra at all deciding to call on her abt any of the Seeds is not present. We could argue that P&Q had rhaenys having silver-gold hair instead of dark and thus GRRM could have added this in...however:

this is Septon Eustace relating how she spoke to Mysaria, who not only was a septon and clasist, but also hated Rhaenyra, wrote that she ate a lot and gave permission to Daemon to sleep wMysaria...the smae guy writes Mysaria liek some sort of witch with "spellbinding" words persuading the already susceptible and paranoid Rhaenyra to call for Nettles' execution

hair color is not the same type of retcon/rewrite as a whole conversation or a plot point -- I am of the mind that the 3 Velaryon boys were definitely Harwin's no matter the whole lack of/presence of phenotypical divergence of some Targs after marriages out of the family , so I think that the difference of hair color in relation to their paternity matters more towards highlighting how the accusations (rather than the truth) against Rhaenyra mattered more than the actual truth, to reflect the greens' intention and not Rhaenyra's supposed "wrongdoing"

All I am saying is that yes Rhaenyra ordering torture instead of just a light arrest for maybe personal (nonviolent) interrogation is a wrong/nonsensical...but it didn't come form absolutely no where. And that there weren't allies/those "close" who did betray is patently false.

B) "Maegor with Teats"

Rhaenyra is only called "Maegor with Teats" for raising taxes...Rogar Barathon/Edgar Celtigar also raised taxes, but the KLers nor Gyldayns call him a tyrant or a baby-killer for it, yeah? So knock it off with the blatant mud-slinging.

Some argue that it could have been a sneaky agent looking to divide Rhaenyra & Daemon or cost Rhaenyra another dragon/dragonrider and thus send off a fake letter with her seal or whatever that changed the original just-arrest warrant to an execution one. This is plausible--Larys is still active and still had an effect, likely, on the public's eyes on her. The Shepherd could just as easily been a plant by a anti-Targ, Faith follower, a septa, a septon, or anyone.

We could also say that Rhaenyra was also very capable of calling for Nettles' execution after Addam's flee, as she does have an edge that swings towards cruelty OR preemptive violence when triggered OR was just a much more self-interested person:

with whatever money she had to set up a celebration and fixings for investing Joffrey as her heir while whatever moneys she had or Corlys had (note how Corlys didn't even offer& no Rhaenyra can't just out and demand hi do so without facing some "uncomfortable" backlash after Rhaenys' death and her being so dependent on his ships/overall support...) didn't go to some aid relief for many KLers

But these are all things that not many would harangue male-usurped people's for or as protest about bc it'd be seen as him asserting his rights/making sure he has no "surprises" down the line.

And at the same time, if not for morality, for the mere presence of another dragonrider she could maybe use if only for her two son's sake, it's also possible she recalled Nettles for that and to await interrogation/to "prove" she was not inclined to betray her. She obviously was unwilling to ever let her sons have to or risk them being put in any harm's way after Jace & Luke; this was her hard line. Or not since Daemon would then be forced to face Vahagr and Aemond alone. We don't know.

Part of it is also how GRRM decided to write her: POST & POST.

So this is one of those grey-black grey areas that we'll likely not know the truth of, when before I was pretty adamant abt Rhaenyra displaying some heavy misogynoir. Why did I shift? all i'm gonna say about this as i saw the new clip now: i won't say much without the context but what i'm hearing is that the show reduced a very morally grey character whose only thin thread of morality came to his family and those he loved (viserys, rhaenyra, his daughters, laena, so on). the show reduces him to three things: impulsive, war hungry, and warmongering. there is so much there specially considering this is george's favorite character, by his own admission. and the show is taking delibate steps to destroy it because one of the producers "didn't get the appeal of him". all i'm gonna say is if you are working for a ASOIAF production, you better understand layers and characters being three dimensional and having depth or you are gonna be gone.

regardless, i just know i'm gonna be more book and headcanon based when it comes to how he is portrayed and if the show decides to go on not only the route that he is abusive toward rhae (they already did with that choke in ep10 which is said matt smith hated because it was out of character for him), but with the new clip. and some implications that alys is gonna mess up with his mind that has some very. . .you know what implications.

the daemon i see, is a man who while yes might be impulsive and a warrior, is also at this point of his life, tired of it, and if remember correctly, he did not want war at first until it was necessary. he is a father and we do not hear he is a bad one on any accounts, even when someone tells him baela was fooling around with footsoldiers and such he dismiss it because he is like that. he is a man whose love for his family drives him to have clear lines (to the point of calling viserys out on not naming hand but otto and callling otto a c*nt). his first action upon entering viserys' room is smelling the cup with milk of the poppy and then ask how did he died.

viserys and daemon had a complicated relationship as brothers but they were brothers and if anything their relationship was more strained in the books, because he did not support his marriage to laena at first or the fact he wanted to give a dragon egg to mysaria's child, as she was pregnant in the book and lost the baby when she was made to return to lys, which is one of the reasons daemon barely spoke with him in those days. he cared for mysaria. she saw a vulnerable side of him that not many did.

and whatever your opinion of daemyra is, daemon and rhaenyra relationship in the book was never portrayed in the way the show is giving snippets of. it's not clear if she took part in blood and cheese but his instinct once he learns of luke's death is to avenge him for rhaenyra. and the daughter they lost, and the crown they took. he was never dismissive of her as queen or her claim. daemon, if anything, had always been rhaenyra's support and he, laena and rhaenyra were close when they were at driftmark and while the polycule might be just rumors, i do believe they were close.

by the time of the dance, daemon was sharing bed with mysaria but it's said that rhaenyra did not mind and even liked mysaria too, so they marriage was never about abuse and power struggles. it wsa about kinship and twin flames in a way and understand one another's true spirit.

I think in the case of HOTD that they're afraid that a bunch of impressionable young women are romanticizing Daemon. Or maybe they've got some ugly stuff planned, and they just want the shippers to be ready for it. Which, I really hope not.

And they might have gotten some backlash for telling an uncle/niece love story, so they're doing a bit of damage control. Saying something sympathetic to incest is guaranteed to get some nasty responses, so I understand it. And like you said, I think we see that with actors playing characters in incestuous relationships a lot, they don't usually have a lot of supportive things to say. But this grooming commentary goes a little too far. (And again, I would argue is not an appropriate use of the word.)

I mean, I think it's fair to say that in some ways he used her. It's fair to say that her best interests weren't always his #1 priority. Why not just say that?

I mean, look at that brothel scene. Daemon takes her there I think for several reasons, but yes, likely to compromise her reputation. (That wasn't my reading from watching the episode but the writers have said it often enough.) As we saw, the two of them didn't even need to have sex for there to be consequences, and I'm sure he knew that, so he didn't really need to 'groom' her, he just needed her to go somewhere with him. But what happens? Rhaenyra is hot to trot and it freaks Daemon out so he takes off running. What kind of groomer behavior is that?

I'm fine with what was on the show, so as long as all of this doesn't affect the writing for season 2, then whatever.

But it's annoying.

How many times have I seen one of the writers saying that Daemon choking Rhaenyra was their favorite scene, or something like that? I mean, WTF. It wasn't just Ryan Condal. Someone else was definitely like, 'I love that moment'. It really does feel like there's a media campaign against Daemon/Rhaenyra.

I don't know, maybe they feel like what came across on screen didn't represent the story they wanted to tell. I mean, it felt too good to be true while it was happening, too romantic, too love story, so I almost have to believe it was writing fumbles and actor chemistry and bad editing and studio interference and whatever other unintentional things. So now they're trying to make up for it in the press. But I really hope not.

They definitely get some perverse joy out of occasionally stabbing people with 'Daemon bad' reminders.

I'm pretty sure I saw an interview with Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke in which they were asked which character they wanted to go on a date with and I think they both said Daemon. The groomer.

Most descriptions of grooming seem to be basically be common practices except they're bad in this context. For example, getting to know someone and establishing trust with them before you have sex—that's pretty normal, and under most circumstances would be called "dating". Giving gifts to your love interest—again, pretty normal and usually called flirting or dating. Is there any real categorical difference?

I think a lot of the misuses of the term would be almost indistinguishable from regular friendship or courting behavior. Like in that initial ask I mentioned that the supposed grooming behavior was, I would argue, just Daemon being a good uncle!

(Obviously I don't want to downplay real grooming, which involves intentional manipulation towards a child for the purpose of sexual abuse, and is a really bad thing.)
