Jedi Survivor Photomode Tips: Portrait Lighting!

There are four lighting features that impact Survivor’s photomode: the environmental light, Cal's lightsaber, the exposure slider, and the three spotlights. Let's use them all 🔆

Environment

The environment/lighting teams at Respawn have designed incredible locations across all these different Star Wars planets. Pay attention to how the already-placed lights impact your portrait: I have a running shortlist of favorite locations that I often go back to when creating a specific look.

Environmental lighting also includes effects like fire particles, weapons, Merrin’s magick, etc. If you get your timing right, these can add extra color and visual interest to your photo.

Lightsaber

Cal’s lightsaber! It’s made of light! While everyone has their own color preferences (ginger saber supremacy) keep your color choice in mind when using the saber as a key light.

Bonus tip: Cal’s saber can also be used to help light NPCs 👀 Photomode allows you to toggle Cal’s visibility on and off, but the ambient glow from the saber will remain. It’s pretty easy to tell when I’m using this trick: just look for a bar-shaped catchlight in the character’s eyes.

Speaking of catchlights - they’re a great way to add life to your portrait. If the environmental light doesn’t hit the character’s eyes, I’ll often use the first spotlight as a key (main) light to try and create that reflection.

Spotlights

I’m often using spotlights in two ways, either intensifying the environmental light or pushing the image with stylized lighting. The first creates more interaction between the character and their surroundings, while the second adds drama and visual interest. My favorite portraits are often a mix of both.

Here’s a breakdown from a recent photo: the unlit photo (1), a yellow spotlight as a key (2), a red rim light that connects to the neon sign in the background (3), a green rim light for stylization and repeating color (4), and the final image (5)

Other spotlight tips: play with moving them closer/further away from your subject, along with the intensity of the light itself. Some colors (white, yellow) are more powerful than others (red, blue). If I can’t get the color I want from one light, I’ll place two in the same location and drop the intensity to blend them - blue and green make turquoise!

If you want to be a nerd like me (though I'm in this industry so it's kind of my job) study lighting that’s used in real life portraiture and cinematography. Techniques like short lighting, three point lighting, butterfly lighting, etc.

Exposure Slider

The exposure slider in photomode is a helpful option when the entire scene is darker/brighter than you’d like. It’s also a good way to isolate your subject from the background: drop the exposure down, then use spotlights to add light back to your subject. Note that the spotlight brightness is impacted by the exposure as well, so you’ll need to crank the spotlights up to compensate.

Photo editing

Survivor’s visuals have a beautiful dynamic range and photomode does a great job protecting its highlights and shadows, though that often means less contrast. So if it’s a favorite portrait, I’ll add some contrast back in and often push complementary color into the shadows (yay color theory!)

You know I get why redesigns for Twilight give her glasses, but honestly one of my favorite parts about her was her being a glasses-less nerd. Like them keeping that design trope out, especially with her being a librarian at the start, was really nice. I liked that they didn't need to add glasses for her absolute turbo nerd status to shine though.

Just a thought. If anything I'd give glasses to rainbow dash or to fluttershy. Because rainbow is always going fast and ruining her eyes with the wind or looking at the sun reflecting off stuff above the clouds. (Or her having some goggles to emulate the Wonderbolts before she gets in) And Fluttershy probably strains her eyes a lot from doing so much in the dark for her nocturnal friends or being the forest. 👀 Do you have any WIPs that you would never let see the light of day? If yes, what are they about?

Currently that's all my ffxiv WIPs frankly :') idk how to feel about them or how to finish them... They're all really over the top smut and I'm like, kinda cringing at myself so I haven't gone back to finish/edit them 😖 There's f!grahawol, f!zenoswol (featuring the much hated "in from the cold" dinner scene, but sexy), and exselch but I realized the exselch one is kind of like the f!exselch I wrote before but with them being their normal guy selves so I got really hung up on like, why am I writing this... I kind of already wrote this... 😭 Maybe I will go back to them one day but they've all been languishing in my gdocs for the better part of the year 🥴

Also there's some first draft chapters from my stardew valley fic that got cut and I doubt I can repurpose them at all but I'm keeping them like, for my own knowledge at least ghdsjjgds also mostly smut parts because bruh that's embarrassing but also there's a few drafts of the finale that were cut too (the finale itself is still a wip but I do know how I want the fic to end more or less, whenever I get there)

😈 Is there anything you enjoy doing that you think your readers hate?

I don't know if I'd say hate necessarily because I'm fragile and don't want to think people are reading my fics and being like, mad about it? 😩 BUT ummm I know I am being inconsistent on a couple of punctuation things and I think there's probably some turbo nerd out there getting frustrated that sometimes I write a sentence like:

"Dialog," action. "More dialog."

And other times it's:

"Dialog," action, "More dialog."

Probably also someone is mad I use prolog and epilog and dialog but I'm an american I will use american english get your UE UE UE out of here! Maybe the run-on sentences too. I like to think it's stylized, and I could be more correct but I like the flavor of my writing reading as though it's someone telling you the story out loud. But yeah all that to say I am doing all those things intentionally, because the flow of the text matters 1000000% more to me than having the most correct english ever

OH!!! Also no one has said anything but I'm anticipating someone getting upset about POV changes mid-chapter. Gonna be one of those with later today's update so I'm bracing for it. For the record though if stuff like that takes you out of a story you're a turbo nerd, sorry to tell you 😞

Also, just some aditional stuff- the time-travel seasons (that count if you want them to!), Doc mentions losing his brother when he was younger, and considering how much very incorrect medical information he seems to accept as fact, I wouldn't be surprised if at some point in the past; the adults around him thought he needed to "move on" from his depression by just ignoring his negative thoughts, and his family listened to every weird therapist they found, so he's just been constantly misdiagnosed (poor guy). As a result, he started to think of things as only "good" and "bad", as defined by the adults who were NOT helping.

I also imagine that the reason Omega got especially expressive with him was because that really WAS from Doc (he watched a cartoon show with his brother when they were kids, and the antagonist talked EXACTLY like that). I also cannot stress enough that not only was Omega not "evil" (not in a genuine way, he's just very frustrated and tends to lash out, and with Doc he liked to play the villain), O'Malley is also not just some "evil side" of Doc, and ultimately, he's there to help him (again, anger is a natural reaction, righteous fury is a thing... and Doc has been alone, more than once in his life. He's been ignored, forgotten. he needed somebody to talk to... and he also needed somebody to help him speak-up to others. when they can finally accept each other, Doc can also be there to help the O'Malley that is part of him, they both can help their friends, and the others can show some appreciation~)

Chemicards Sketches - Assorted (The Decomposer, Maneater, Hybrid, Turbo Nerd, Johnny Gunn)

Various sketches of characters I didn't get that far with.

I don't have a clear theme idea for the Decomposer. The original lore is that he's a zombie that's trying to spread a weak virus. To me, I couldn't get too much except "generic zombie" from that description, so I had a hard time thinking of how to design him, and I'm not happy with anything I've come up with so far. I had decided early on that he was zombi-fied due to mushrooms, so I wanted to show them growing out of his body. I liked the implication that it's the mushrooms that are actually the mastermind, but they're only effective on things that are already dead.

That leads into what I'm sure is supposed to be his "rival" character, Maneater, the giant plant. It's really too easy to take this to a place that resembles a piranha plant or Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors, and I wanted to avoid that as much as possible to a middling result. I based her flower on a lily so she'd at least have an interesting shape when her "mouth" is open, but there's really no avoiding that she looks like a bulb when closed. I'd also like to make her a little more anthropomorphic, just so she's more of a "character" and less of just a "monster"... which basically means she's gonna turn into a piranha plant anyway...

Hybrid I think speaks for herself. I didn't have any strong feelings about her. I just wanted to make a catgirl. Well, if it were up to me, it'd be a catboy, but I decided to stick to the original descriptions as much as possible, and that meant keeping her gender. As long as my lore wasn't directly in conflict with what the original said (which usually wasn't a lot), then I let it slide. And the lore didn't shut down the idea that I could make her a cat eared maid, so I did it.

Turbo Nerd I think could just be more interesting. He's also the character that I think will probably be the most different personality-wise from the official design. When I made Turbo Nerd, I thought of him as a more stoic/nervous character that really only gets excited when computers or his favorite anime are involved, but after I listened to his theme song after already conceptualizing him, I realized that Turbo Nerd is supposed to be the "trolling and pompous" variety of nerd. But, the spirit of the challenge was to design these characters if I only had the descriptions I was given, and with what I was given, that's just not the direction I would have gone in, so I'll probably keep my original personality for him, if I decide to draw my version of him again.

Johnny Gunn is Johnny Gunn. He's pretty straightforward. As I said in Ka-boom's post, my original MO was to give every character at least 1 sympathetic trait, but I think making Johnny Gunn sympathetic at all completely goes against the kind of character he's supposed to be, which is a douchebag. So maybe he has a tragic backstory, but he brushes it off because Johnny Gunn is better than any terrible past he might have. Hey, maybe having that much confidence in the face of tragedy is sympathetic in its own way.

hi I'm major nerding over poker at the moment. had a crazy day today, losing two big tournaments, then coming 2nd out of 100+ in two small ones. i have recently started tracking my stats and learning important info, whether that be just doing bits to document how i won/lost, whether I need to change things, or tracking cool stats like this.

It's just cool graph. I love spreadsheets. I'm really good at Turbo R/A tournaments.
