If you have to ready any canon compliant (mostly) marauders through the years fic, this is the one, Children_of_the_shadows is one of the best writers ever, Top 3 fic authors.

Everyone knows text talk, it's basically wolfstar bible, Non Magic AU where the boys meet by accidently texting the wrong number.

3. Time is a Fine Invention by bluepeony (ao3) 105k

Brilliant university non magic au, with the most imperfect and human characterization of both Remus and Sirius, read it if only to humanize the both of them and their relationship. Insecurity in a relationship and Coming of age and all the thoughts accompanying it are perfectly described in this. so much foreshadowing if you read it carefully enough.

It'll make you hate and simultaneously empathize with both characters.

4. Slughorn's Sanitarium for Troubled Boys by MelloPie 65k

TW: discussion of mental health, SA, institutionalization, ab*use, s*icide, self h*rm.

Non-Magic AU, set in a mental institution, where both noys have to share a room. Its one of the first long fics i ever read, so maybe i have a soft spot for this one, and every other fic on this list.

5. The Lad That Loved You. by MollyMaryMarie (ao3) 81k

I've said this once and I'll say it again, mollymarymarie is one of the best writers out there, another top 3 author for me, all of her fics are amazing, obviously including dear you holiness, we can pretend, the only living boy in new york, i might have to do a separate recs list for that.

But, if you had to read just one, i would say The lad that loved you is the perfect one, set in their 6th or 7th year? of hogwarts, they hide their new relationship by acting like they hate each other, and let me tell you, they are exactly, perfectly themselves in this fic, and by that i mean exactly how i imagine them.

There is not one single thing about this fic that i would change. Perfection.

6. Discards by picascribit (ao3) 76k words

I can't make a fic rec without picascribit. Cure for nightmares changed my life. Non-magic AU, Remus meets Sirius in the library he goes to study at, real love isn't always perfect and doesn't involve perfect people, is what i've take away from this fic.

Top 3 Fics. If you had to read any wolfstar fic, it would be this one. I've read 100's spanning from 2016 - till date, and this is the best one ive ever read.

Remus is newly divorced, and he meets Sirius Black.

If you've ever lost someone one and had to re-learn how to live without someone you never thought you would have to live without, this fic will encapsulate the gist of it in words.

In one of their notes the authors says something close to 'the hardest thing about losing someone is finding out that the earth keeps spinning and you have to keep living'

8. Dating Remus Lupin by Children_of_the_Shadows (ao3) 83k

Top 3 fics. I can't explain this fic in any words, the writing style is brilliant, the characterizations are unique and wonderful and perfect. Everything about this fic is brilliant.

Set in Year 5, Sirius Black wants a boyfriend and James tells him about the only other openly gay boy in in their year, it just happens to be Remus Lupin. Much to his disdain.

9. Remus Lupin's Guide to Successful Courting by Children_of_the_Shadows (ao3) 87k

Non Magic AU, Remus Lupin finds harry in his yard having escaped from school and return him back to Dr. Sirius Black, who's new to town and coincidently doesn't have an inkling about Remus's past, his eyes clear of any judgement are what make Remus fall for him and pursue him, court if you will.

I again cannot explain this fic. Children_of_the_shadows is the most talented writer, i will make a separate fic list for their other brilliant work.

Writing Update 1/31/23

Hello everyone!

The past two weeks (and a half) have been pretty busy for me. because of that, I've only managed to write 5k words, which brings Part 2 up to 105k words. However...

I will be returning to Patreon for February! If you'd like to support me and are interested in seeing some extra content, you can check out the masterlog of posts here to see if it's something that interests you.

I've also gotten a few questions on my hands, and I'll just say that they're fine! I've had to make a few modifications to things but otherwise I'm able to finally get back to writing.

However, physically while I've gotten back into writing, it admittedly has taken me longer to get my "inspiration" to write. it wasn't until the last few days that I was really in a headspace where I could properly work on the game, but now that I've made the first initial steps, I imagine it will be uphill from there in that regard.

I imagine the release date for Part 2 is going to get pushed back to second quarter as opposed to first just taking into account editing and alpha readers. I still plan to put out a post for alpha readers as well, but seeing as the entire schedule has been pushed back by a good month or so I'll be pushing back applications as well so they're closer to when the chapter will actually be finished.

I currently have 59 works on AO3, though some of those are unrevealed or anonymous, so the visible work count is a bit lower.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

105k! Wow. Over half of that has been in the last two years, when I've been doing a lot more writing and taking part in exchanges.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Naruto (7) Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling (7) Original Work (7) Warhammer 40.000 (3) Fate/stay night & Related Fandoms (2) Stellaris (Video Game) (2) From there we get into a lot of one-offs that I wrote for exchanges. House MD, Gundam Wing, Good Omens, The Order of the Stick, and many others. Most of the Original Work fics are for particular exchange prompts, some of which are quite fun.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

The Greatest Weasley [Harry Potter, Ron-Centric, incomplete] - this WIP is my white whale! Ron gets sorted into Slytherin. Only a couple chapters, I should return to it sometime...

Harry Potter and the Independent Path [Harry Potter, parody, one-shot] - This very short parody fic is fun and I'm glad people like it. I actually look back fondly on this genre even if I poke fun at it.

Five Times Sakura Heard the Voice, and One Time It Faded [Naruto, Sakura-centric, one-shot, 2.9k] - This was an fest fic for Fest No Jutsu 2022! I really enjoyed writing this one.

If You Won’t Wait for Me, I’ll Find My Own Path [Naruto, Sakura-centric, drabble] - Wrote this one based on the fandom opinions of my friend @xenosimp. Surprised at its popularity.

Liana and the Labyrinth’s Core [Original Work, Explicit, Het, 2.3k] - I wrote this very explicit fic for an exchange, and had a lot of fun with it! Minotaur/Sacrifice, make sure to read the tags/warnings.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

For exchange fics, almost always. Otherwise, I do sometimes. It's fun to chat with other fandom people and let them know I appreciate their comments, or answer their questions.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I don't usually write angsty endings, but The Rules of Reintegration [OW drabble, prompt: military android masquerading as a human] is angsty.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I'd say Four Times Toph Beifong Triumphed [ATLA, Toph-centric, 2.5k words] would be it. It's generally fun! 

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not often, though I got one very baffling comment on a fic where someone questioned the realism of it. I'm not in the big fandoms where there's lots of drama though.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, often for exchanges. It typically tends to be straightforward steamy sex. I've got some more kinky stuff posted to anon that I won't share here, heh.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I've written one, but it's not usually my style for writing, since it's a challenge for me. I love reading them though!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

No, and I hope it never happens. I don't think anything I've written is popular enough for that 😅

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

My fandom friend and I co-wrote Mist and Shadow, a WH40k AU fic about Eldar escaping the fall of the Eldar empire. After about 12k words, we set it down, but we may return someday.

14. What’s your all time favourite ship?

This is a tough one! All-time, I'm not sure. But at the moment, I'm basically chewing on Durge/Enver Gortash (BG3) and having a great time with it.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Oof, this is a tough one! There's a very old Naruto fic that I don't think I'll ever get back to... Lost Root. I can't really recommend it in its current state, but it was one of my first plot bunnies.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm pretty decent at paragraph-to-paragraph rhythm, and I am unafraid to try new things.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Sometimes I repeat certain phrases without realizing it, and pacing scenes can be difficult for me. I also have a tendency to write excessively long sentences. Trying to improve on that last one!

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Seems like a hard sell for both writer and reader.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

StarCraft pro gamer RPF. No, you won't find the fic on my AO3 profile.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

I'm still in love with Roonil Wazlib and the Goblet of Fire, a 2.8k word Harry Potter crackfic I wrote for Bad Bang V. Is it bad? Yes, oh yes. And it's fun, and so are the comments.

(long) writing update ahhhh (5/17/24)

hi hi i disappeared (more appointments this month than previous ones, but not wildly so), but i've revised 9/25 chapters. i'm being silly and doing developmental revisions (where there are some chapters where i need to strengthen relationships, side characters, and dramatize some scenes) AND line edits (where i'm reducing my clear love of fragments lmao and reducing the word count from 105k to 99k; i'm at 102k rn) at the same time lol.

i'm unsure if i'll do it this way again. i know i won't if i have huge developmental notes, but most (so far. i'm gonna do one more round of betas) are smaller/medium revision critiques so i felt it was fine.

i knew i'd find it suuuuuuper tedious to do developmental edits through the whole thing and then immediately go into line edits through the whole thing before i send to a beta (or betas). it didn't have to be immediate, but i already set june 1st as my 'i'll send it to you on this date' to the one beta i have rn for this round.

i'm actually enjoying the draft. revisions are def the part of all this that feels like work to me (not necessarily in a bad way, but i do think i enjoy drafting more when i compare each version of their hard days to each other i think??)

anyway, i have my query list together and i'll be getting critiques on my query in less than two weeks and i have not started the synopsis at all lmao. when i start querying will depend on if there are additional betas to the next one i have, how long it takes them (i'm hoping for a quicker round, but people gotta work ofc), and what kinda notes i get back (hopefully nothing major that first rounders and i missed out on).

i'm hoping to start querying in july, but we'll see (i'll def be back here more often then like the other social media websites i scroll frequently aka youtube and reddit aren't the place to yell about querying woes lol)

Resident pantser checking in here! 🫡 I'll make a bulleted list and then expand on the points as needed for legibility.

What does your drafting and editing process look like?

Set some kind of objective

This could be the ending of novel/work or simply a pivotal/exciting scene I want to get to. If I do know the ending (I don't always do), then I choose a part that I know plot-wise has to happen before then and set that as my goal. That said, I have sat down in front of a blank document before and just let it take me where it wants to go, even if I already had an ending in mind. If the ending changes then I just roll with it.

Write until the objective is reached

This part of the process is pretty bare bones, mostly getting dialogue down, setting, and general character movement/feel. Basically, the very minimum of what needs to be written to get to where I'm going. Think of this like drawing a straight line from Point A to Point B on a page. Again, none of this is planned or outlined. I just sit down and go.

Add fluff (Repeat as needed)

As the name implies, I go back to where I started writing (yes, ALL the way back to the beginning) and start adding fluff. These are things like adding more descriptors, fleshing out movement in the scene, facial expressions, vocal intonation, visual/auditory cues, inner dialogue, additional characterization (direct and indirect) etc.

Editing

This is run-of-the-mill stuff, catching grammar mistakes, spelling errors, etc.

Surprise Event: Nuke it

This can happen at any point in my process, even at setting the objective part. If I decide I don't like something, it doesn't make sense for the plot, or doesn't fit well for the characters, I copy that whole section and paste it into a doc called "Prompts", leave it there, and try again. It doesn't matter to me if the part I'm cutting is 200 words or 20,000. I WILL NOT HESITATE. Why? Because I can just write more. The time/energy invested just doesn't matter to me because even if I'm not using what I had right away, there is a chance I might in the future, and even if I don't, I still learn something from it. To drive this point home, I was 30k words into AASOAF 2 when I cut 25k from and started again. The finished work still ended up with 105k words.

What are your best tips and tricks?

Know your characters REALLY well

This, in part, is why I have no issue getting rid of things, even really big plot points/conflicts. If you know your characters inside and out, no matter what you come up with next, you will be able to drop them into and write something that feels "right". I find it helps me be less married to ideas when I come up with them and gives me more freedom to be creative because I have something to hold onto.

Fail Fast

Let me explain. First, there is no "failure" in writing. What I mean when I say this is to dive in, hit speed bumps quickly, learn something from them, and recover. Don't wallow, don't despair. You can ALWAYS write more. ALWAYS. (Stop shaking your head. You absolutely can. I believe in you!)

Learn to timebox

Have you ever entrenched yourself in an idea so hard that you refuse to let go of it and you end up "forcing" it to work? (That's okay, I think we all have.) Let me be clear, committing to an idea is not a bad thing, nor am I advocating that you abandon the story that you want to tell because it's challenging. But if something is really not working, and it's been plaguing you for months/weeks/whatever or isn't making you excited to write, LET IT GO. You can always come back to it later! It's not going anywhere, I promise!

Save your rippy bits!

I truly believe there are some pieces that are meant to stay "unfinished". That is, there are some pieces that you're not meant to fill in all the plot holes or tie off loose ends. Those pieces are meant to hone something specific in your writing arsenal, and "not finishing" them should not be considered a bad thing, nor should it be considered a failure. Instead, see these pieces as ones that you can draw on for what you write next. Some of them might even be resurrected and added to your latest and greatest WIP!

I will end with my biggest piece of advice for anyone who pants' (?verb? lol) or writes in general:

Your writing, your ideas, your drafts, and your WIPS are NOT EPHEMERAL. They are NOT SILOED. They are NOT ABANDONED. They all go into honing you as a writer and your style. They are all an amalgam of who you are as a writer, so don't be afraid of losing those things. You physically cannot lose them because they came from you, and they are, continue to be, and will always be FOR YOU.

I’m curious. Pantsers— writers who go into a draft without an outline— what does your drafting and editing process look like? What are your best tips and tricks?

How long from start to finish does it typically take you to finish a story? I have a friend who spends a lot of time thinking about and mentally planning her stories, so that by the time she actually sits down to write it, she can finish it in just a couple of days. I'm more of a "i have a basic idea and i'll figure it out as i write" person. So it usually takes me longer to finish one.

It depends. I mean, obviously the length of the story has something to do with it. I’ve written like a 3k one shot in a day or less, but longer stories take longer. I once wrote a 105k word novel in 15 days (this... was the outlier). It took me about 2 months to write the draft of my dcbb, which was about 59k. I’ve been working on a fic for nearly 2 months and it’s stalled out at about 12k, because Real Life has gotten in the way of writing. (hopefully I’ll get back to it tonight, because the Real Life situation is now in a holding pattern, at least temporarily)

I finish a thing, give myself a few days to recover from the thing, and then start writing the next thing. I don’t spend much time planning, aside from already knowing the whole story before I start writing. I know that doesn’t make sense to people outside my brain, but that’s what’s going on up there. I can see the whole story playing out like a movie in my mind, and I just... write it down. That’s the process. I used to assume that’s how it worked for everyone, but some people need to sit down and actively plot out every detail, and some people need to slowly figure out details as they write. Everyone’s different! And that’s fantastic! But it also makes 99% of writing advice... terrible. :P

Basically, it’s a process of figuring out what works for YOU. Understanding how YOU write best, and then perfecting that process. Writing advice is all great, but if I’d bought into the “write a detailed outline! Plot out your story carefully in advance!” advice, I’d never have written ANYTHING, because my brain just doesn’t work that way.

I’m just looking over my last few things I posted, and It’s Lily Dale took about two weeks (it’s 15k), Eleven took a couple hours (3k), It’s Destiny took less than a week (7k), and Worst Case Scenario took about a month (30k). So it varies. But it also depends on if Life is getting in the way, if I’ve been sick or exhausted or just too mentally overwhelmed, you know? It happens sometimes. Other times I just get on a roll and can’t be stopped. :’D

I TRY to write 1k on the nights that I do write (I try to make it every night but New Supernatural Episode Nights, but I always take at least one night off a week, because everyone needs a mental break). I don’t always hit it. The last few nights I’ve written, I didn’t get much past a few hundred words each time, but it’s still something. And then some nights I’ll look up and realize I’ve typed 3k already. So it just depends. Some scenes are easier to write than others, too. And sometimes my current mental state just doesn’t fit right with what I’m currently working on, and I’ll do just about anything to avoid writing.

And look at me right now, writing this instead of fic. :’D
