I'm usually pretty diligent about keeping my Kdrama obsession on my sideblog, but everyone, you need to hear about Queen of Tears.

You know the super common trope of mysterious, work-obsessed, emotionally-constipated rich guy falls for a "poor" (usually middle class), spunky, every-girl? (what Pride & Prejudice is commonly mistaken for) Kdramas LOVE that trope. They love it to death. And because their format is almost always 12-16 episode miniseries and then done, you end with a marriage and "happily ever after".

Queen of Tears is set three years later and the Happily Ever After Couple is headed for divorce. Turns out that even true love can't overcome terrible communication and awful families. Maybe acts of service done in secret isn't a great love language. Their Destined, Soul-Mates relationship has crumbled and it's all due to very logical fall-out from trauma and their personalities. It is excellent. It's also gender-swapped for extra fun.

I love it to death and more people need to know it exists.

Using this prompt to talk about Jenna and their hobbies!!! As mentioned in their Meet My MC post, Jenna's hobbies include drawing, drag, and martial arts!

Drawing

Jenna got into drawing when they were young, like elementary school. They did a lot of art classes/clubs all the way through high school. They also did a lot of art therapy after their dad died and it helped them work through a lot of their trauma and grief. Martial Arts

Jenna also started learning martial arts at a pretty young age. When they were a kid their dad signed them up for a karate class and they really enjoyed it. After their dad died, they wanted to learn more, so the convinced their uncle to sign them up for a taekwondo as well. They are a black belt in both. As an adult, they learned Drakovian martial arts from Trystan. Since they had a background in other martial arts already, they picked up on it pretty quickly and Trystan was rather impressed.

Drag

Okay, I saved my favorite one for last hehehe. As mentioned on Jenna's dossier, one of their affiliations is the House of Flores, which is a drag house they joined after they quit the police force. They weren't really sure what to do next with their life, but the House of Flores welcomed them with open arms. Jenna had met a few of the members while working on the force because they were sex workers who had had a few run-ins with the law. Jenna was always nice to them and did everything they could to keep them safe from the law. As alluded to in the name of the house, all the members' drag names have a floral theme with Jenna's being Poison Rose.

Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."

Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.

These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!

Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!

Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.

So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.
