Worth mentioning that I'm partially switching doctors bc when I was running all over the place trying to get my surgery shit set up in time, and I went to the bloodwork lab for the second time, I vented just a little bit to the woman who's been working there a long time. being like. I've had to do this and that and my doctor said this and that he can't find this... and she was like Hmm. You have Dr. (name of my doctor), don't you?

Chronicles of Narnia 30 Day Challenge — Day 1

What is your favourite book?

The Last Battle.

It's hard to explain, but that one left the most indelible mark on me, on its own. Like the four Pevensies+Eustace books all kind of go together for me, and had similar impacts, so I can't really separate one book out of them.

The Horse and His Boy is a close runner up, but Last Battle wins out on account of making me cry for sheer wild longing every time I read the last chapter.

HHB was my favourite as a kid, mostly because horses, but also there were lots of things in Shasta's story that stood out to me, particularly the part where he has to keep running on foot after getting to the hermit's house, as well as his encounter with Aslan in the mist. I didn't like LB all that much, it frightened me, reading about the death of Narnia.

But now I love LB, it has so much pain but so much hope, a 'right bit more than hope' as movie Mr. Beaver put it. It really came home for me one time when I finished listening to the FotF Radio Theatre version, and I sat there bawling because I wanted so badly for it to be true, and then I picked up my Bible, flipped to Revelation, and read all the way through it out loud in one go, as the sun set outside my window, and summer twilight fell. And I read 'Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus' as a prayer that turned my longing to hope.

And especially as I get older, and the wretchedness of the world increases, I see more and more beauty in the idea of staying true to the end no matter what happens to you, no matter how many or how few stand with you. Love can make anything beautiful, even that.
