Chapter 22 / 26
by @annaofthenorthernlights
Nobody intended to ruin Yelena in person.
After all, if she hadn´t been such a tough manager, this magazine had never become as known as it was those days.
But then now, she had become very thoughtful and sat with braced arms before her chest, gazing in some indefinite distance.
Then she raised an eyebrow, looked up first at Mathias, then into the round and finally let her gaze rest on Anna and me.
"I have to think. I've now learned that this team sticks together like peas and carrots. I could praise the fact that we have such a strong bunch of friends working and pulling together. But we have rules in this house. Apparently, they don't count for any of you. I appreciate Kristoff taking responsibility for this and Anna to be ready to step down according to the rules of the game."
Nobody said a word. The thin thread of hope dangled within the atmosphere, and if Yelena was about to give in to their blackmailing backup for their team leader and co-worker, then they didn´t want to wreck the chance they sensed.
This touched me deeply and I could sense Anna´s trembling emotions by my side. She had enforced her grip on my arm and her fingers intertwined strongly with mine. I quickly glanced down at her just long enough to catch her sparkling glimpse of wonder within her beautiful, enlarged eyes for the jiffy of a magical second, when Yelena´s voice pulled me harshly out of my reverie.
“Alright, all of you. I don´t want to be called the heartless mother Gothel on here. I have a clear view of how a business is meant to work, but then, I´d be a fool to jeopardize such exquisite team spirit. So then, you all get one chance. You gather up and sort a plan of how this is going to work without getting out of hand. I want a clear statement of how this team works together without fooling around and misleading work positions of any kind. Do you hear me? In case I don´t see the point in your masterplan, I will have to undergo the necessary steps of consequences. You´ll have 24 hours. And Samantha, please I need a word with you alone. The rest of you, get out of here!”
Olaf and Honeymaren passed us with a raised eyebrow, a small grin on their face. Ryder and Mathias left behind them, wisely not looking at us. And then, Anna and I followed, and I closed the door behind us, only to get a short glimpse of an eye of Sam standing before Yelena´s desk while she quickly glanced towards me with a hidden wink. What a friend, I so much appreciated and respected this tough woman´s bravery.
Anna still held on to my hand and once we stood in the hallway, we faced a semicircle of friendly faces looking at us in suspense. And for the first time since we had entered Yelena´s office I could feel the rush of blood rising to my ears. This was all so tremendously overwhelming.
I cleared my throat and gestured down the hall, stating as calmly as I managed.
“Not here, let´s meet in the conference room, okay?”
Half an hour later, we all sat around the great table that used to be a meeting point of concluding discussions. Anna and I had decided to simply thank them all for their support and concern. But we also agreed that we didn´t want anyone to get into trouble. Anna had asked me to take the lead, after all I was the team leader. But I clearly pointed out that she had an equal voice in this, and I wanted to give her credit for her standing up for herself before.
“I, well, we want to thank you for what you´ve done. This is truly incredible, and I don´t know what to say. But then, I, well, we can´t ask this of you.”
“That´s right.” Anna added to my words. “I´d never dreamed that you guys would come up with something as stunning as you did. But I agree with Kristoff. You can´t risk your careers for our… misbehaviour.”
I looked fondly at her, because I was so proud of how Anna stated the fact of usdoing something obviously wrong, even if I didn´t truly believe we had really done anything wrong. But we had done it together, and that made my heart leap.
But then, Honeymaren got up from her chair and looked in the round.
“I don´t think, we´re talking the same language here. We haven´t resigned because we want to risk anything for you two. We believe that there is nothing wrong of what you´ve done, whatever that might be in the first place, and I think speaking for everybody here, that we don´t want to know what you´ve been up to in details.”
“Well, actually, I´d like to know.” Olaf shrieked in between.
“Shut up, Olaf.” Ryder punched him playfully on the arm.
“Ouch, that hurt, you moron.”
“Stop that, you two!” Mathias frowned and shook his head. “Honeymaren, please go on.”
“Anyway,” Honeymaren went on after rolling her eyes to the boys´ stupidity. “Fact is, that we agree that you two have never ever given us a reason in the slightest to think that you were misbehaving. Nor have you, Kristoff, treated Anna preferably above us, and you, Anna, have never taken any advantage of your relationship with the boss. We highly acknowledge the professionality about your both handling your feelings around workplace.”
A cacophony of confirmational comments was heard and nodding heads smilingly underlined Honeymaren´s statements.
I had not expected such approval coming from our colleagues and I could sense Anna´s excitement upon Honeymaren´s speech. And then, Anna spoke with a wondering voice.
“But you had noticed, Maren, by hinting of knowing about us.”
“Of course, I did. We all did.”
“And Olaf has seen us on our way to work one of the first mornings.” We shrugged simultaneously on that thought, feeling like caught redhandedly in the moment again.
Again, some smirking chuckling rounded up Honeymaren´s speech and Olaf lifted his hand to announce a statement.
“Yes, we knew. I promise though, that I have not spread any word. You two have unintentionally outed yourself all alone. But then, hey, it was simply fun teasing you and watching you winding for answers and excuses. That was amusing! I´d really hate to miss that part of work life, seriously.”
“Alright, now you´re being the moron.” Ryder rolled his eyes. “Don´t listen to Olaf, he has a brain as soft as a snowman.”
And Ryder got punched on his arm.
“Ouch, stop that.”
“Stop it you two or I will throw you out of the room and directly into Yelena´s office.” Mathias scolded them again.
Ryder and Olaf sat straight and signed sealing lips.
“Alright folks,” Mathias shifted in his chair, “you heard Yelena. We have 24 hours and to be honest I have no intention to sit here till midnight. As much as I appreciate the two of you, I´m not willing to risk my health for your sake.”
He earned congregational nodding and chuckling to that. Anna and I looked at each other in bewilderment and I wanted to ask what they intended to do now, when Mathias continued.
“So, we all agree, that we want to keep you both with us. And maybe we can sort a plan of how this will work without having you chested to your chairs in order of keeping your hands to yourself. Because we have witnessed you can make a difference between work and private life.”
“Unless anybody caught you in the act, right?” Olaf stated with a happy grin.
“OLAAAAAF!” The group frowned at him in chorus, and the friendly snowman-brain lifted is hands apologetically.
I couldn´t stand this any longer and intervened.
“Alright, I think I get it now. And I can´t believe we work with such a loyal bunch like you guys, but then I wonder what you have in mind?”
“Yes,” Anna shook her head, “this so kind of you all, but we are like marked sheep within the herd. Now that everybody knows, we´ll be watched with Argus eyes.”
“Of course, you will!” Mathias stated. “Honeymaren, would you like to continue for us?”
“Gladly.”
Then Honeymaren pulled out a sheet of paper from her document case and cleared her throat.
“Kristoff, before in Yelena´s office, you´ve so perfectly stated that you thought of working for a magazine redaction that held family values high, in which love is an essential element. And yes, that´s we´re saying, too, family stands for love. So, if love does not count in these rooms, what on earth are we then doing here? Have we not always cared for each other like family does?”
This was almost too much for me and I could hardly believe what I heard, and Anna squeezed my fingers that forcefully that I nearly winced under her feisty grip. All that was left was to listen to what the group had in thought, when Honeymaren stepped to the flipchart with pen in hand, ready to note down the statements which were now open, to be thrown into the room. Anything was welcome to solve the problem of prohibited relationships within a team.
Mathias started with a thought to their team-ship.
“Since “frozen marshmallows” is a family magazine, isn´t the topic of love and relationship the focus no 1, when it comes to family issues?”
“Yes,” Olaf intervened, “what´s the harm of having a love couple in the boat with us?”
“Exactly,” Ryder joined in, “what if you guys were some kind of “example” to the work-life balance we always write so much about?”
I watched Honeymaren scribble down the statements and I noticed Anna shifting in her chair while she eagerly watched the words on the white board. And when she looked at me, I saw the glint in her eyes and understanding was finally dawning on us. What, if we were to turn the tables? What, if there was a chance of good with our love not being hidden but proving the magazine´s vision itself?
And our faces of worry and concern for each other and the team sacrificing their careers for us turned into a shape of hope, sensing light coming into the tunnel of narrow-minded focus.
“I see,” I said quietly, “and I appreciate so much what you´re doing here. Seriously, this should be a written down as an example of great teamwork. But then, we must not forget the trickiest thing in this all.”
“What´s that?” Mathias asked with fatherly smile.
I glanced at Anna for a moment, and she reassuringly nodded, like she wanted me to speak my mind freely, and not holding back for her.
“The preferable treatment”, I said. “Whatever I do, or not do, anybody could point at my actions as me treating Anna in a special way. That´s not what I want to turn it out to be, and I especially don´t want you to be put into focus of quarrel and jealousy.” I had turned to Anna for the last words, and I could see her understanding and nodding earnestly.
Honeymaren tapped at the flipchart with her pen and noted down a phrase about this very topic, just to turn facing us again.
“But you´ve never done that, Kristoff. You could have easily put Anna above others, without anybody hinting suspicion. But you never have. And that´s why we didn´t say anything. It was all totally alright. And I think I speak for all of us, that we´d like to keep it that way. That´s as easy as it goes. Right guys?”
Again, a chorus of confirmation filled the room.
“So, what about we set up a sheet of “treaty”, where we put down the team´s agreement of the things we see important to keep us in this constellation?”
Everybody held up their hands and then the miraculous happened and within the next hour, all important paragraphs were listed.
1. “Frozen marshmallows” is a family magazine, where love and friendship were essential in the way of family issues. Having a couple on our team is no harm, but a great chance to live the magazine´s “vision”.
2. “Preferable treatment”, is a no-go. Besides that, Kristoff and Anna have proofed of working professionally all along within the team. Actions hurting this pamphlet will be reported.
3. Work and private life must remain separated, unless there is a special moment like birthdays or the kind.
4. Should anybody see a problem, it must be laid out in the team and there will be no talking behind bushes.
Paragraph no. 3 had opened a wild discussion of when private life began. When leaving the building or earliest at home? Olaf had clearly stated that to his opinion it started the moment we left the office ground and like that, he had easier access of mocking us in case we crossed his way in public. He was such a sweet moron.
Well, at the end, we were prepared to present the work to Yelena the next day!
---
Back at home I got a phone call from Sam.
I learned that Yelena had accused Sam to fall in her back by pulling ropes with the team. But she told me that I must not worry, because Yelena was like a big hound, loud barking but no biting. Sam said that she had tried to explain to the leading manager about the same things that we had obviously noted down in the team.
And according to our genuine friend, Yelena had sat in thought over the fact that her magazine was after all meant to encourage families, and therefore she might reconsider her strict rules of team-life maybe at least a tiny bit.
“Thanks, Sam.”
“You´re welcome. And hey, Bjorgman.”
“Yes?”
“I liked your statement about Anna being your family.”
“She is, I mean it.”
“Of course.”
“Okay.”
“Don´t forget you owe me something, right?”
“What´s that?”
“Forgotten? I like invitations.”
“Wait, what?”
“Bye, blondie, take care.”
And she had hung up to leave me looking at my mobile, finally understanding about her hint dawning on me, and my heart accelerated upon realisation.
“What was that about?”
Anna looked at me with big eyes, and I took in those blue orbs in wonder, while we sat on the sofa.
How beautiful she was, my Valkyrie!
And I told her about what Sam had said of her meeting with Yelena.
“Maybe, we really don´t have to leave after all…”
I could hardly believe my own words, and Anna scooped a bit closer to me taking my hand.
“Kristoff?”
“Hm.”
“Do you think she´ll accept the treaty?”
“Hopefully!”
“What if not?”
“Then I´ll look for another job and you´ll stick to your plan B.” I said with a smirk, just to get nudged on the arm, and how much I loved her playful revenge right now…
“Seriously, Kristoff, don´t make fun of me, you might regret it in future.”
“How come?”
“When I get famous you´ll pay for this, by walking the red carpet with me.” She giggled and I chuckled with pleasure at her game.
“You find your greatest fan already sitting here.” I said and tugged a lost hair strand behind her ear.
“Guess who´s your biggest fan?!”
We sat for another while when Anna nearly crawled into me. I loved her being so close and my heart swelled by the sentiment of knowing her by my side no matter what will happen.
“Kristoff?”
“Hm.”
“How did you mean that?”
“What?”
“When you said that you liked your job, but you won't give up your own family for it?”
I looked into her wonderful eyes and wondered if this was the right moment to ask her that very question that made my heart leap with love for her!

You Make It Hard to Miss You | Connor Brashier
A/n: here is part 2 of Saying Goodbye, so sorry for the wait. Also, I cried writing this so oops.
Summary: You and Connor are trying to navigate this whole long distance thing, but it’s not seeming much like long distance.
Warnings: angst mostly (I cried while writing it, so like, I lowkey hope you do too or I’m not doing something right)
Word count: 3.2k
***
The first two weeks are the hardest. He’s been so busy with classes, getting accustomed to campus life and everything there that he hasn’t really had time to talk. And while the first week was supposed to be syllabus week, he already had homework. So our texts were minimal, our talks were short, and our FaceTime calls consisted mostly of him trying to do homework while I worked on editing photos with little to no conversation going on until I eventually just fell asleep.
It was… hell, to say the least. And nights were the worst because part of me is still expecting him to show up at my window like he did literally almost every night before. So that’s probably what makes this the hardest. I knew from the beginning that him leaving was going to be hard. I knew it was gonna put a strain on us. We went from seeing each other every day at school, and practically spending every moment of our weekends together, for two years – well, almost. Our two year anniversary is at the end of next month. But that’s not the point. The point is he’s moving on with his life, as he should because he needs to focus on school and working toward his career. And I’m so tremendously proud of what he’s doing and where he’s going. I am.
It just… Well, it still hurts though.
My thumb hovers over the call button. I know I shouldn’t call him. It’s late and he’s probably sleeping, or he’s busy with his work. I shouldn’t do it, but I do. The phone rings twice before he answers.
“Hey, kid!” He sounds chipper, much happier than I’ve heard him in a few weeks. But I guess to be fair I haven’t heard much from him at all the past few weeks either.
I clear my throat, swallowing the lump growing my throat from just hearing him. “H-hey.” I take the bear he gave me before he left and cradle it against my chest. It’s starting to lose a little of its scent. But that’s definitely because I’ve been cuddling and crying into it for the past two weeks.
I pray he doesn’t catch my hesitance, but he’s Connor, of course he notices.
“Hey, what’s wrong, baby? Is everything okay?”
I take in a breath, “No, yeah. Everything’s fine. I just,” I shrug. “I just wanted to check on you. Haven’t heard from you in a couple days, so I was just getting a little worried. But you’re alive,” I force a chuckle. “You sound good. Are you doing good?”
“I’m okay.” He pauses for a while. “I miss you, kid.”
I stutter on a breath, “I miss you, too, Brash.”
If he hears my struggle to breathe, he doesn’t mention it and I’m grateful. “Are you getting ready for bed right now? It’s late, don’t you have the first pep rally tomorrow? You’re charging your camera batteries? You know the ones in the camera closet are never charged.”
I don’t know how he manages to get me to crack a smile, but I do. “Yeah, I’m charging my batteries.”
“Good.” He says, and for the first time, I can hear the rustling on the other side of the phone. He sounds like he’s walking.
“Hey, I didn’t call at a bad time, did I? You sound like you’re outside. Are you with friends right now? I’m sorry. I’ll call you back some other time.”
He just chuckles. “No. Don’t hang up. You’re not interrupting anything. Hey, random question.”
“Okay?” I furrow my brows.
He grunts and the rustling gets louder on his side. “Is your window unlocked?”
I turn my head toward the window and nod before remembering that he can’t see me. “Um, sorry. Yeah, it is. Why?”
“Well because I’m climbing your tree and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t locked out.”
“You’re what? Connor!”
“Give me a minute, kid, it’s hard to talk and climb at the same time. Just open your window for me, okay?”
“Connor-“
“I love you,” he says before hanging up. I rush to my window to open it and then grab one of my extra blankets to push under the door to keep our voices from carrying down the hall. I’m turning around just as he’s climbing in my window. He sits on the window pane while he slips his shoes off, so not to track mud on my floor. Not that I’d even care at this point because he’s here in my room after weeks of not being here. When his shoes are off, he stands and looks up at me with a bright smile on his face. “Hi,” he says softly.
I bite the inside of my cheek before basically tackling him. My arms wrap tightly around his neck as his wrap around my waist, his head burying in my neck. We sway from side to side while I cry silently into his chest. He sighs, kissing my shoulder. “There’s my girl. Missed holding you.”
That only makes me clutch him tighter. “Don’t let go,” I beg.
He chuckles and I feel the vibration from his chest against my cheek. It’s magic and I never want to lose this moment. “Wasn’t planning on it,” he says. “But I wanna lay down with you, so you either have to walk yourself backward with me or wrap your legs around me so I can walk us.”
I smile and start walking back until my legs hit the mattress and we’re falling clumsily onto my bed. I stifle my laughter into his shirt and we shift awkwardly until I’m laying on my back and my legs spread open to accommodate for him. He smiles and looks up at my, moving my hair off my neck.
“Hi,” I say quietly, looking into those beautiful blue-green eyes that I’ve missed so much.
“Hey,” he mumbles back. “You look pretty.”
I blush and move my hand from the back of his neck, where I’ve been playing with his hair to cover his eyes. “Shut up.”
He takes my hand and moves it to his lips where he presses kiss after kiss to my skin. “I’ve missed looking at you.”
“Bub,” I’d pout. “I’ve missed you too.” We don’t speak for a while, he just rests his head on my chest and rubs his thumb over my barely exposed hip, while I continue to play with his hair. “Your hair’s grown a little,” I muse.
“Mhm, haven’t had a chance to get it cut yet.” He mumbles into my shirt.
“I like it.”
“Yeah?”
I nod, “Yeah. More to play with.”
I feel his smirk before I see it as he looks up at me again. “Or to tug on while we make out.”
My cheeks heat at his statement. “Mhm… maybe. Haven’t tested that out yet though.”
He nods. “Maybe we could?” He asks hopefully. And how could I deny him when I haven’t felt his lips on mine in weeks.
“Yeah,” I nod. “I think we should.”
He doesn’t waste a second more before his lips are covering mine in a way that makes me feel so much love. I couldn’t explain it to you, the feeling I get in the pit of my stomach when he kisses me, or touches me, or hell, even just looks at me. There’s something about the way he holds me close to him that makes me feel seen. And even now, after two years together and weeks apart, he’s still making me feel seen.
It’s not butterflies that I feel with him. No, it’s much more than that. So much more. I hum into the kiss and on instinct reach for his hair. He grins when I tug on it a little harder than usual. After minutes of breathless kisses, he pulls back, forehead on mine. “Well I think I’ll let my hair grow out a little more.”
“Yeah,” I breathe, chasing his lips. “Let’s do that.” I swallow more air and then we’re kissing again, harder now, needier. I wrap my leg around his before flipping us over so that I’m on top of him now. His hands are on my ass, kneading and groping like he’s trying to get me closer to him but can’t. But when I get that feeling in my stomach that things are going too far for my comfort, I hum and start to pull away. He knows the sign, so he lets up, chasing my lips for three more kisses before laying back against my pillows.
“You okay?” He asks, rubbing his hand up and down the outside of my thigh in an attempt to calm my racing heart.
“I’m good.” I clear my throat and sit back, still straddling his waist. “I don’t want to ruin the moment,” I say quietly, playing with my fingers. “But can I ask you a question?”
“You can always ask me a question.”
I sigh, “How can you be here right now? Don’t you have class tomorrow morning?”
He shrugs. “it’s just econ. I’ll make it up.”
“Connor.”
“Oh, come on, y/n. I missed you.”
“Well I missed you too, but-“
“I really missed you. And I couldn’t wait any longer to see you.”
“Not even a day? You could have come for the game, stayed the weekend.”
“Well I still can,” he says. “I mean, I ‘ll have to drive back tomorrow to get my laptop and some clothes, but I can do that while you’re at school and be back in time to pick you up. How does that sound?” He grins, taking my hand in his.
“Like a dream.”
“A good one, I hope. We don’t do bad dreams here.”
I can’t fight the smile that lights up my face. “A good one,” I concur. “But bub, that’s a lot of driving. And a lot of money on gas. You need to be there.”
“No,” he shakes his head. “Right now? Right now I need to be cuddling my girlfriend because I miss her and it’s been two weeks since I’ve seen her pretty face and tasted her soft lips and held her in my arms. Right now I need to be with you. It does my heart good being with you.”
I lean forward and kiss his lips once more. “Yeah, mine too.”
---
The coming back and forth persists for three weeks. Except now he’s coming back home three to four times a week, and I don’t mean just like a Monday, Wednesday, Friday thing. I mean he’s coming Monday night, driving back early to make his nine am Tuesday and driving back that night, then driving home even earlier for his eight am on Wednesday. He’s not giving himself breaks and it’s making me worry. About him, about his grades. Because that’s four total hours that he’s driving a day, then he has two or three classes during the day. When is he having time to study and do his work?
Which is what I bring up to him when he steps into my room again. “Are you doing your work?”
“Well hello to you, too, kid,” he chuckles.
“Connor. Are you getting your work done? Because this coming back and forth everyday is not good for you. You’re spending a lot of money on gas, you’re missing out on sleep. I’m worried about you.”
“Hey,” he sits on my bed next to me and takes my hands. “I’m okay. I’m getting my work done. I’m turning it in. And don’t worry about how much I’m spending on gas, I’m not worried about it.”
“And your sleeping? But you’re waking up at five or six in the morning so you can make it to your morning classes and you’re not getting here until ten, eleven o’clock. Sometimes we won’t fall asleep until midnight or one. You’re not getting enough sleep.”
“I’m getting plenty. Stop worrying, baby. I’m okay. I promise. I wouldn’t be doing this if I thought it was messing with my work? Okay?”
I sigh, “Okay. But you’ll tell me if it is, right? Because I promise I’ll be okay if you can’t come over.”
“I won’t.” he says and kisses my knuckles. “But I’ll tell you. Now, since you mentioned your worries of my sleep schedule, you think we can lay down?”
“Yeah,” I’d nod, leaning over to place my book on my nightstand. “We can.”
But for the next few days I can’t shake this feeling that he isn’t doing as good as he’s leading on. He doesn’t think I’ve noticed, but he’s leaving later and later each time, so if he’s going to class, I know he’s got to be getting there late. And I know that he’s at least missed his econ and psych classes three times now.
So that’s why we have to have this discussion tonight. Because I know he’s about ten minutes out and we can’t keep doing this to ourselves. So I wait, cross legged on my bed, with my bear (that he recently sprayed again, leaving me a bottle of his cologne that he knows I love so much) in my lap. I’m playing with the fur on the ears when he slips in my window with a soft thud of his shoes against the floor.
“Why the long face?” he asks, with an amused grin on his face.
“We need to talk, Connor.”
He frowns, “I don’t like the sound of that.”
“Please? Just sit down?”
“Okay?” He moves across the floor and sits in front of me, his body facing the window, but his head turned to look at me. “Is everything okay?”
I sigh because this is harder than I thought it would be. “You have to stop coming over?”
“Wh-what? Why? What did I – what did I do?”
“You’ve missed classes, Connor. And you keep getting here earlier and leaving here later. I just – you can’t keep missing class because you’re driving here and back almost every day. It’s not fair to you.”
“Okay… first of all, I’m gonna need you to stop calling me ‘Connor.’ Hearing my name like that, from you makes me nervous. And second,” he shrugs. “I’ve been looking for a way to tell you I kinda hate econ, anyway.”
I shake my head, and roll my eyes. “This isn’t funny. This is real, okay? You are there, at college, two hours away. That’s where you need to be. Not here. Your life is not here anymore, it’s there. Your future, your career, it all starts there. You can’t come back every other night.”
“My life is here. Sitting right in front of me. My life is telling me to stop coming to see her and I don’t understand why because I’m doing fine with my classes. My grades are fine. I’m keeping up.”
“Connor, you’re making it hard to miss you. You’re making it hard to get used to us being in different zip codes. You’re making it hard for me. Because I was just starting to get used to you being gone and then you showed up and now I’m used to you being here again and it’s not fair because you’re not here. You’re there.”
“Well maybe I don’t want to be,” he argues. “Maybe I want to be here. With you.”
“No,” I shake my head again. “This can’t keep happening. It’s too hard. I love you. I love you more than anything else in this world. You know I do. Which is why I need you to stop showing up three, four times a week.”
“That doesn’t make any sense. You love me. I love you too, and I miss seeing you every day and falling asleep next you. I come back because I need to see you. Because hearing you say you’re okay over the phone isn’t enough for me. I need to see it with my own two eyes. I miss you, kid. I don’t know what else to say.”
I close my eyes and swallow the lump in my throat. “But by showing up like this… you’re making it hard for me to miss you.”
“Why is that a bad thing?”
“Because I’m gonna get used to this again and it’s gonna hurt even more when you really can’t just show up because I didn’t learn how to cope with missing you. I’ve become so dependent on you, Connor, and I told myself I would never do that.”
He nods and looks down at his hands. “So what does this mean then? I just, stop coming to see you all together?”
“Or at least during the week,” I shrug. “I don’t know. I don’t know if this is gonna make this easier or harder. We’ve never had to go through this. We’re learning. I just think that what we’re doing right now is not what’s best for us.”
He sniffles, “Fine.”
“Don’t be mad. Bub, please don’t be mad.”
“I’m not. I’m not mad. I just, wish we weren’t going through this.”
I lean forward and press my forehead against his shoulder. “Me too. I’m sorry.”
“No, don’t. It’s my fault.”
“No, what – it’s not.”
“I was the one that kept putting off the conversation of what we were gonna do when I left. I kept saying we didn’t have to talk about it because nothing was gonna change. I’m still Connor, you’re still y/n. I’m bub, you’re kid. I just,” he sighs. “I wasn’t ready to let go.”
“Let go?” I look up at him. “Are we letting go?” I ask with tears in my eyes. “I don’t want to let go. No, bub. Bo.”
He shakes his head, taking my face in his hands. “Not letting go. Not ever letting you go. I mean letting go of our normal. I didn’t want to entertain the idea of a new normal. But now I know that not talking about it just worsened this, I guess.”
I choke on a sob, “Why does this feel like you’re trying to say goodbye right now?”
“Hey,” he wraps his arms around me and pulls me to his chest. “I’m not saying goodbye. I’m not. You will hear those words come out of my mouth. I refuse. We’ll work on it. You said we’re learning. So we’ll learn and we’ll get better and we’ll be even stronger, okay?”
I nod, sniffling. “You know I’m not pushing you away, right?”
He sighs and kisses my forehead. “I know. I know, kid.” After a few minutes of this, he speaks up again. “Come on. Let’s get some sleep.”
I swallow in more air and agree, “Okay.”
So we lay down, him as the big spoon, and me the little spoon. “I love you,” he whispers into my hair.
My lip trembles and I stutter on my breath. “I love you.”
---
I don’t know what wakes me at five, but I know it’s not Connor like it usually is. I turn to my side, reaching for him on instinct, my eyes still closed. But I come up empty and panic sets in. “Connor,” I say, sitting up, searching my room with sleep filled eyes. But he’s nowhere in sight, his phone isn’t on the nightstand, his shoes aren’t on the floor near the window. He’s not here.
I whimper and lay down, snatching up my bear because it’s the closest thing I have. And I cry silently into his fur because I know Connor said it wasn’t goodbye, but it sure as hell felt like it was.

Love, Emma (2/7)
(Art by the wonderful @carpedzem <33)
Loosely based on Love, Rosie (2014). Killian and Emma are best friends and neighbors. They've always been -- until he leaves for the Navy when his brother dies. When he comes back, nine months later, summer has begun and childhood is ending. Emma can tell something is changed in him, but she doesn't know what. Until she does. He's fallen in love with someone else.
And then, suddenly, they're kissing on her nineteenth birthday. When she asks him to forget their night out, and never talk about it again, Killian thinks she means to tell him she regrets the kiss they exchanged. Except she has no memory of it.
Killian and Emma will dance around each other, until their heads spin and their legs hurt, and everything becomes blurry and it has to stop – for both of their sake.
Title is from Taylor Swift’s August – which clearly inspired the mood of this chapter. Had it on loop while writing, so if you feel like it, do try to listen to it while reading!
Once again, a huge thank you to @profdanglaisstuffwho beta’d this and gave me very useful advice to tie the plot together!
Friends to Lovers - Mutual Pining - Angst - Fluff - 6000 words - ao3
Part 1 - Mirrorball, Part 3 - Hoax , Part 4 - Peace, Part 5 - This is me trying, Part 6 - Cardigan , Part 7 - Invisible String
PART 2 - AUGUST.
Present Day – 21st of June.
“—I’m really sorry Killian, it won’t happen again,” Emma’s words linger in Killian’s bedroom, long after she’s gone.
He is still lying on his bed, staring at his door, the one Emma escaped from. He stretches his bare feet over the lime green cover and frowns.
Well, once again, he got it all wrong. He really thought she meant their kiss. She really seemed to want him back.
His skin feels tacky under his fingers. He really needs to take a shower.
He finds a small blue plastic ball on his nightstand, and absently plays with it, swaying it in the air above his head.
“Bloody hell,” he whispers to himself.
An odd, nasty hand is gripping his heart. He’s not angry. He’s not even disappointed. He stopped hoping for something to happen between him and Emma a long time ago.
Except he’s lying to himself. Of course he is disappointed.
He called things off with Milah to give Emma and himself a chance, after these past months spent holding back from her. He was so surprised to find her this eager to be with him, once he got back.
He thought she would forget him over the year. He knows he desperately tried to. Milah appeared to be the perfect distraction.
Milah comes with a bigger cost that he is willing to pay, but that he only learnt a few weeks ago, over the phone. She finally confessed. It was a relief to find out he wasn’t being crazy or delusional. She has been seeing her husband again – the very same man she’s trying to get a divorce from.
He rolls his eyes, almost misses the ball. Milah is driving him crazy and he isn’t entirely sure she is worth it. At least, not when Emma’s green eyes look at him in the way he’s always wanted them to.
But that was a mistake, as well. Emma will never see him as anything but her friend. He made peace with that, when he left a year ago. It was too painful to hope, and with Liam gone, he couldn’t rely on Emma to be happy.
So he left, before she could leave him. It’s the most selfish thing he’s ever done, but he couldn’t, cannot bear to lose her.
Better to rip off the bandage straight away. Even if it leaves a wound over his heart, a wound that itches and burns.
His phone buzzes on his nightstand. He gives up the ball and stretches his arm to grab it. Twenty missed-calls. Milah must be freaking out.
And then, as hangovers usually go, his mind goes back to Emma. He cannot go on like this. He must know if she truly doesn’t want him back.
His fingers quickly find her name in his phone. Her contact photo is a picture of them both, from freshman year. They are sitting on Storybrooke’s carousel, near the beach. It’s fall. The wind is gently blowing their hair, as he hugs her from behind. She looks completely and utterly blissful, her head thrown back as a laugh crinkles her entire face. He is gazing at her, of course, he always has.
(He remembers Liam took the picture. The memory twists his stomach.)
It was so easy, back then, easy to love her and not want anything more. But the summer crush soon evolved into something more demanding – infatuation.
Killian presses her name. If Emma answers he’ll ask her.
He waits. For a long time. It is painful. But she doesn’t answer. And perhaps she does not want to. And then he gets a double call, and he knows before glancing at his phone who it is. M.
He reluctantly answers. “I hope you’ve got a whole script of excuses written down, Milah.”
He promises himself he won’t fall for her tricks.
He lies, again. Surely, Emma was wrong. Liam would not be proud of him.
(His eyes suddenly lend on the small, blue box on his desk. Bloody hell. He forgot to give Emma her present.)
.
A year ago, the 29th of June.
“Are you sure everything will be okay, little brother?”
Liam’s paternal tone sends angry shivers up Killian’s spine as he ties balloons around their front door. What an ass. Liam is very well aware that this nickname is, to Killian’s ears, the worst combination of two words.
“Aye. Don’t worry. You can go see Elsa in peace, brother.”
Killian shifts his gaze from the yellow balloon that’s also being a pain – just stick to the door! – to face Liam, standing in front of him with his hands on his hips.
Liam’s eyebrows are raised and it is difficult to know whether Killian is looking at his father or his brother. He winces. He’s going to get the talk, now, isn’t he?
“Alright. I expect to find this house standing when I come back.”
Killian swallows a very sharp answer. Liam’s entire life purpose solely relies on Killian needing him. Except he doesn’t anymore. He turned eighteen in February and he wants to see wider horizons than this bloody town. (The only thing – person – holding him back is Emma.)
“Don’t worry. It will stand just fine—”
“Great because…”
“— we don’t really need all of the walls, do we?”
Liam scoffs, visibly unimpressed by his sarcasm, and disappears once again into their home.
A home that is already filled by a smell of chocolate. After his last exam, earlier this afternoon, Killian made a cake – Emma’s favorite – to properly celebrate her birthday.
He hasn’t seen her in a week now, and for a very good reason: they all sat a horrendous amount of exams. Liam made sure Killian spent his week with his head buried in his books. Which is understandable, but also bloody unfair. (His life is tremendously boring without Emma Swan.)
Killian’s attention gets caught by Liam, coming his way again with a big, leather bag. He passes through the door and one hand finds Killian’s shoulder, presses it, as blue eyes delve into his.
“Be careful, Killian.” For once, Liam’s words seem really directed at him.
Killian simply smiles. “Always am.”
Liam grins as he nods and takes a step outside. “Do wish happy birthday to our roommate for me. She’s a good one.”
Killian rolls his eyes – what a nice way to remind him he probably shouldn’t invite Emma over all the time. Very Liam of him.
“I will. Safe car ride, brother.” With those last words, he goes back to blowing up the balloons.
It really takes a lot more effort than one might think. Emma will owe him a new pair of lungs by tonight. As he gathers all of his strength to blow up a pink balloon, he feels someone staring at him.
He looks up.
It’s Liam, in the car. He is waving at him, car window down. Behind him, the sky is distinctively blue.
Killian frowns but waves all the same. Weirdo.
.
“Alright. Everything’s ready,” mumbles Killian to himself, examining his living room.
He glances at the big clock on the wall. 8:15 pm. He is early, as per usual.
He shrugs his shoulders and dives onto his sofa for some relaxing me-time, getting out his phone. Emma has left him a text: “Leaving in 10, is that okay?” The thought of seeing her face warms his heart, and he quickly answers back: “Come whenever you want, I’m ready!”
As expected, the doorbell rings almost instantly. That makes him chuckle, imagining his Swan lass waiting in front of his porch – not wanting to bother him.
Emma didn’t have the happy childhood he did, with his brother and his father – although that did not last long. When they met, something was already irrevocably broken inside of her.
Chasing his memories away with a shake of head, he jumps to his feet and reaches the front door in a few long strides.
He opens with his heart drumming in his chest.
“Killian!” Her excited cry meets him as he discovers her outside.
She’s wearing a little black dress and white sneakers and her legs are already slightly tan, and she looks very, very pretty in front of this summer night sky and he must be blushing already.
Eyes open wide, it takes him a lot of willpower to exhale correctly. “Happy belated birthday, Swan!” He wishes he didn’t sound like he’s just run a marathon, but there is just so much a man can hope for.
Emma offers him a blinding smile. She’s the prettiest girl he’s ever seen.
“Thanks, Killian!” And then she shakes her wrist right in front of his eyes, and Killian’s horrified expression transforms into a soft smile. “And thank you for that, too.” The silver bracelet glints against her skin, “It’s beautiful, really.”
(He couldn’t bring himself to wait a week to give Emma her present. Thus, he dropped it on her porch on the twenty-first of June, with a small note: “Happy birthday, Swan. Love, Killian.”)
Killian is glad she does not ask further questions – because he would have had to justify the fact that this bracelet nearly cost him a hand. (Well, it did cost him two months of housework under Liam’s smug smirk, but it was definitely worth it.)
“Wanted you to have a proper gift for your eighteenth birthday,” he begins explaining but then she’s grabbing his neck and quite literally throwing herself into his arms.
He is quite out breath at first – Swan’s always been a little brutal in her displays of affection – but then he feels her fingers tangle in his hair and her breath gets deeper in the crook of his neck, and that is definitely very nice.
Come on, Killian, hug her back. His limbs seem to have turned to stone as he gathers all of his mental power to gently hold her waist. He allows himself to close his eyes, for an instant, as he inhales her perfume – a fresh fragrance of ginger and herself.
“—And thank you for organizing this party for me!” she beams as she backs away, and she sounds ecstatic, which is surprising considering how she reacted the first time he offered to organize it.
(It was a lot of screaming and great sighs and “but no one will want to come!” and, finally, Killian’s hands on her shoulders, “I promise, they will want to, Swan.” He was the one who came up with the idea of simultaneously celebrating the end of the school year and her birthday – so as to divert the attention from her – and it was all it took to, finally, convince Emma Swan to celebrate her birthday.)
“My pleasure, Swan. However, I am going to need you to stop thanking me. I already know how perfect I am.”
Oh, the look she darts at him. She’s all fire, Swan, with her fiery green eyes. He cannot say he does not love every second of it.
“Can I come in now or are we going to stay here a little longer to admire your door?” And then she’s glancing down at his hands still holding tightly her waist, and he blushes furiously, taking them back in a heartbeat. “Nice balloons by the way.”
Her amused words are a cold shower over his shoulders. He shudders, clearing his throat.
“Jeez, do come in, Emma. Sorry. Got lost in my thoughts,” he mumbles very quickly, grabbing her hand to guide her in.
Staring at the white walls of his living room allows him to cool down a bit. Damnit. He cannot be bloody flustered anytime she talks to him. Emma talks to him a lot. She’s his best friend, for heaven’s sake.
“No worries, your door frame is really pretty, when you take enough time to notice.”
He glares at her, but it’s with a lot of tenderness. “Shut up, Swan. You know what I’m like when I have to organize things.”
When he shifts to face her, she’s staring at the decorations he’s taken so much time to prepare. Everything is calculated, from the distance between the HAPPY BIRTHDAY sign and the crisp bowls on the coffee table and the color of the napkins – yellow of course, Emma’s always been yellow.
“I know, Killian. But it’s just a party. You can relax.” And with her last words, her arms have wrapped around his neck.
She cannot tell, but it’s doing terrible things to his heart rate.
“Thanks, Emma,” he rolls his eyes dramatically and gasps. “Doctors hate her, she found the secret cure to anxiety.”
Oh, how satisfying it is to see her blush suddenly. Why should he be the only one suffering from the heat?
She frowns, her fist gently bumping against his chest. “You know what I mean, Killian.” He hears the tiny bit of fear in her voice.
And smiles at her. “Aye, Swan. I’m teasing you.”
And then he stares at her with a big, idiotic grin and she’s raising her eyebrows and – unfortunately for their little duel – the doorbell rings. They both jump, establishing a respectable distance between them. He doesn’t want the others to talk more than they already are.
“Ah, got to leave you, Swan. I have to be a perfect host.”
She snorts next to him and dives an expert hand into an open crisp bag on the kitchen counter. “Do go ahead. Do your worst, Killian.”
He rolls his eyes. He hates her.
.
It’s nearly midnight, and everything is going very smoothly in the Jones house. It is nice to see it come to life once again, with all of his friends having fun there.
It distracts him from the void that reigns between these walls, if only for a brief moment in time.
Killian presses a bottle of coke against his lips as David explains to him his last soccer game and Killian is barely paying attention to him.
Oh, David is a very nice guy – in spite of the orange t-shirt he is sporting with confidence that night. Probably one of the best friends he’s made in high school. But it’s really hard not to want to divert his gaze somewhere else when David wears this kind of t-shirt, especially since Emma seems very invested in a girly talk back in the kitchen.
She’s trying really hard to fit in, he can tell, from the way she holds herself – arms crossed over her chest to protect herself, but feet towards the girls, eyes alert, grin impeccable on her face.
He really wants Emma to have other friends – beside him. One cannot rely entirely on someone else. It just will not work out, for her. She needs to distill her affection. Even if it means settling for somebody who wears Yoda on his chest at a birthday party.
“Excuse me, mate. Need some water,” he mumbles and David doesn’t look very concerned.
“No problem, dude. See you later,” and with those words he swiftly joins another conversation animated by Robin – a guy from Killian’s mathematics class.
Killian rolls his eyes at his social ease. It’s unfair. David can just jump from one conversation to another and always feels welcome.
Killian heads for the bathroom, glares at one couple – Zelena, brought by Regina from Physics, and some guy – smooching on the stairs.
And then he really doesn’t mean to pry on the girls in the kitchen – but his ears catch his name.
“And what about you and Killian, Emma?” asks Mary Margaret – David’s girlfriend of two years now – in an impish tone, and he hates her for it.
Something blocks Killian just behind the wall of his kitchen – a crippling, human desire to know. From where he stands, he is able to hear but cannot see or be seen.
There is something very heavy and green, down in his stomach. Fear.
He hears Emma’s chuckle. He’d recognize it anywhere.
“Killian? Nothing! We’re just friends.”
Her words should not burn like this. It shouldn’t feel like someone just ripped his heart out in front of him. She’s merely stating the truth.
“Oh, come on Emma. Everyone can see how close you guys are at school,” Mary Margaret will not let it go and Killian is almost tempted to jump in like a devil to put this conversation to an end.
There’s a silence then. It’s deafening.
The universe conspires to play a slow song at this very moment. Killian can feel his heart beat in his temples.
“No really,” Emma’s voice echoes once again. “To be honest, I’ve been crushing on someone else.”
Ouch. Lava seems to have been spilled in the vicinity of Killian’s heart. It burns. Killian’s hand is shaking as it finds the wall in front of him. He doesn’t know where to look. Nowhere seems fine. Everything is terrible and this place is too loud.
“Nooo! And who would that be?!” Their voices are too loud.
Killian knows the answer before she utters the name, and he is cursing every god above. Not him, not him, not him, please, not him…
“Neal.”
Killian’s heart shatters on the ground. The din is unbearable. He needs to get out.
Why is he so mad? They’re only friends. Surely he knew that all along.
A summer breeze welcomes him outside as he sits down on his porch, and its softness is in sharp contrast with the way his hands shake as he clenches his jaw to hold back something much scarier.
He takes his head between his hands. It feels like he will never be able to go back inside his house. Except he will, of course. Not only does he simply have to on a practical level – it’s his house after all – but also nothing is really as unbearable as one thinks at first.
.
Later that night, when everyone is dancing and Emma is searching for his eyes in the crowd, Killian receives an unexpected call.
He is sitting on the couch, surrounded by David and Robin, when Liam’s name flashes on his screen. Something stirs inside of him. Killian presses their shoulders, “I’ll be back, mates” and abandons their card game for the tranquil solitude of the kitchen.
It gives him a good view of the party without being a part of it. Emma, Ruby and Mary Margaret are still dancing in the living room.
“Mr. Jones?” A voice answers him on the phone. It is not Liam’s voice. And it is very distant, as if from another reality.
His initial instinct is to think it must be a mistake. Liam must have lost his phone.
“Aye, Killian Jones. Where is Liam?”
He isn’t even concerned at first, because Emma’s staring at him suddenly and wrath circles his heart. He is so mad at her for not liking him, not like he likes her. And at the same time, his heart cannot help but whimper as she smiles at him, her green eyes creasing. He notices she has smeared her black dress. Clown.
“Your brother had an accident, Mr. Jones. His car crashed into a heavy goods vehicle, and he was hurt in the process—”
A chuckle escapes his throat. What are they saying? Liam is immortal, of course he will heal.
“Did he break an arm or a leg?” Killian snorts. His weary gaze notices the chips spilled over the counter. He will have to clean that up.
“Actually, Mr. Jones, your brother did not make it—”
Another nervous chuckle escapes Killian’s mouth.
He doesn’t know his body has started to react before him. He does not feel the tears that rush to the corners of his eyes, does not control the movements of his face as something very evil swoops down on him. The only thing he knows is that at some point Emma enters the kitchen and she’s frowning furiously at him.
“Killian, what’s wrong?”
His phone is still pressed to his cheek. The paramedic hung up five minutes ago. But he didn’t make sense, and Killian is trying to call him back.
“Nothing, love. Liam is trying to trick me.”
He always used to do that, when he was a little boy. Nine-year-old Liam would hide until Killian wept and asked Liam to find him instead.
He doesn’t know why Emma stares at him in a weird way afterwards, doesn’t know why her brows furrow and her chin starts quivering, and she stammers. “Is he alright?”
She doesn’t make sense then. Why does she sound so panicked? It will be fine. Liam is playing a trick on him, hasn’t she been listening?
“He’s fine, Emma, really, it will be fine—"
Next to the chocolate cake and the chips on the kitchen counter, Killian notices the pink vase holding the yellow irises Emma left on his porch earlier this week as a thank you for her gift. (There was no note with it, but a red ribbon was delicately tied to the flowers.)
Killian doesn’t know then that Emma’s face starts to reflect the expression on his features. Doesn’t know she’s staring at him as he breaks down, doesn’t see himself suddenly kneel to the ground in a desperate attempt to feel something cold under his skin, to feel anything – anything but this earthquake inside of him.
When she kneels next to him, a shiver of horror shakes his shoulder. “Don’t look this upset, Emma. It’s your birthday party,” he quickly utters. He doesn’t want to ruin her party.
And then, it clicks. Just like that. One second of understanding, and his life as he knows it is over.
Emma’s hand is suddenly very firm over his knuckles still tensed around his phone, and she forces him to let go. He doesn’t fight back. Death has already taken her reward.
In his memories, she’s the one who breaks down into his arms. It’s not what happened. The truth is he collapsed between her arms, and she held him so tightly, and with such strength, it felt like she had been ready for this her entire life.
He’s unable to look away from the yellow irises behind Emma’s back as she clutches into him. They’ve started to wither. It makes him sad.
.
Present Day.
Killian waits for midnight to strike before risking a glance at her window.
No light in Emma’s room. It’s now or never.
Grabbing his keys, Killian quite literally runs to her house. He reaches her door like a lightning bolt, and just like that, drops her present next to Ingrid’s doormat.
(He leaves no note. Didn’t know what to write.)
.
Killian avoids Emma all through July and August, and he does so quite well – just enough for it to be bearable and not so much as to make her worry.
One afternoon, he heads for ice-cream at Ingrid’s but his blood freezes before he can get in. He expected Emma to be working, but surely not Neal Cassidy to be leaning against the counter.
Killian fists his hands. Why are you angry? You’re dating someone else, for fuck’s sake.
He doesn’t like Neal. Neal isn’t a good guy. Neal is a terrible idea, one he’s tried to shake from Emma’s mind for a long time now.
Killian steps to the side so as to not be seen, and examines the scene carefully. Emma is wearing the blue uniform. For all he knows, she has been helping Ingrid out in the shop since they graduated from high school.
Emma never did like school very much. It only made sense when she decided she didn’t want to go to college and chose to stay in Storybrooke until she figured out what she wanted.
Killian cannot see her face from his hiding spot, but Neal is all teeth out. His smile sparks fire in Killian’s belly. The air of this summer afternoon is uncomfortably dry and warm and grains of sand seem stuck down Killian’s throat.
Neal suddenly bends towards her, hands her a piece of paper – his number, Killian gathers – and as Emma takes it, Killian’s gift glints around her wrist. (She added the charm he offered her. That alone nearly makes him suffocate.)
You’re dating someone else, his inner voice stammers.
When Neal reaches to brush a strand of hair from Emma’s face, it is simply too much for Killian. He turns back, his stomach twisting.
With one, heartbreaking thought in his mind – You’ve done this to yourself.
.
Late August.
Saying goodbye is incredibly bittersweet, this time. (So was last time but Liam had just died and it made sense.)
It feels a lot like they are both performing their friendship as they stand a foot apart, by the departure door.
There is so much bitterness in his mouth, on the tip of his tongue, in the rigidity of his muscles clenched around his heavy bag. Emma is tense too, won’t look at him, stares instead angrily at the departure board.
“Well,” his voice finally breaks the silence. It doesn’t sound like a voice, it croaks in the hall. “Time to say goodbye, Swan.”
From the corner of his eye, he sees her nod, blonde hair floating around her face. As he risks a glance at her, he begins to understand she is shaking.
She’s holding back tears. And his anger dissolves into the wind, becomes shame and guilt and tenderness.
He doesn’t want her to be sad.
He lets go of his bag, and grabs her hands, her bracelet ringing playfully as a hello. “Hey, Emma,” he whispers, murmurs her name cautiously to make her look up. She does eventually, and her eyes are bloodshot.
His hands cup her face. “It’s going to be alright, ‘kay?” She nods again, but her chin quivers. It’s killing him. He knows she thinks they wasted their summer. He thinks so too. He only fears they’ve wasted more than that. “We’ll text, and call, and I’ll even write you letters like in those goddamn movies of yours.”
The last part makes her chuckle, but that quickly turns into a frown. She’s determined to not let any tears slip out, but her eyes are working against her.
He traces her features with his fingers, her small nose and her freckles, barely brushes her lips, and he looks up to see a peculiar glint in her eyes.
The weight of unsaid words crushes their young shoulders.
He licks his lips, tries not to stare at her mouth too long. Instead, he leans his forehead against hers, and finds a bittersweet comfort when she wraps her arms around him.
“Come back,” she eventually mutters, her breath tracing the shape of his lips.
He swallows, holding himself back. And holds her tighter, buries his face in her neck, breathes her in. “I will. Always, Swan.”
Then, they don’t say it. They don’t say it but it echoes like a din between them. It’s heart wrenching, and childhood is definitely over.
Summer has never tasted this bitter.
His jaw is tensed as he lets her go to grab his bag. He does not expect her to hold him back, her fingers gripping his hand with strength.
When he turns to face her, she’s staring at him with eyes wide open and lips pressed together.
“I’ll come back, I promise,” he simply states, but she frowns harder and he can tell it is not enough.
Nothing will ever be.
He doesn’t say it then – let me go, Emma – but she hears it anyway and her palm opens abruptly, freeing him from her grip.
And he takes a step ahead. And another one. Until his legs aren’t so stiff, and oxygen finally reaches his lungs.
He doesn’t need to look back to know she’s staring at him the whole time.
.
Four years later – July.
Don’t get him wrong, Killian Jones has had his lot of fucking shitty days, but this one is clearly competing for the highest place on his podium of heartbreaks.
He presses a glass of rum against his lips, drinks it up in a few mouthfuls. David and Mary Margaret are sitting next to him and he is aware that they look genuinely concerned. But he is too mad to look at them. He’s furious, furious that their speeches about hope and “finding the right person” finally got to him.
He believed them – even if it was only for the five short minutes during which he ran like a fool towards Storybrooke’s town hall – he believed them.
Around him, everyone is disgustingly happy. He still feels sweaty in his white shirt and he cannot shake an infuriating strand of hair from his forehead.
Running was pointless, of course. He was too late. Has been for years now.
From the corner of his eyes, he catches a glimpse of Emma in her white dress. She stands up, and for a moment his attention is caught by the bracelet around her wrist. There are four charms on it, four charms echoing the last years of their friendship. She is still wearing it, in spite of everything. It makes him sad.
But Emma isn’t aware of it, instead rings a spoon against her glass of champagne to catch everyone’s attention.
She is still the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen.
“Hello everyone. Thank you all for coming to our wedding.” The man at Emma's side, her husband snorts Killian’s inner voice, smiles and watches her with adoration.
And Killian is watching his life fall apart, as he does too often.
(It fell apart a long time ago, mumbles his inner voice, but he is too sober to be thinking about this.)
“I really, really couldn’t be happier to have you all here.” And then her eyes are on him and Killian wants to disappear.
How can she still look at him this way after all this bloody time?
He forces a smile on his face, nodding at her and mouthing “go ahead, Swan, you’ve got this.”
It gives her all the confidence she needs to give her speech, and she does it well.
The teenage girl he knew is long gone. A beautiful, confident woman stands in the middle of the room.
A woman he wasn’t bold enough to love properly.
Killian lowers his gaze as she goes on about how happy she is, how perfect everything is, and he wants to vomit and pass out and forget all of this.
But then he feels her stare at him once again, and he looks up to catch her eye.
Can she tell he’s been in love with her all along? He hopes so, because he will never utter the words now.
.
He definitely expects her to find him, as he sits outside on the balcony of the big mansion by the sea she rented for the ceremony.
The moon plays with the gentle salty waves. It’s one of his favorite views of the world. She knows it.
She takes longer than he thought, judging by the amount of rum he manages to gulp down, but she does find him.
“Hey, what’s up, sailor?” Her voice echoes, breaking the comfortable silence he found himself in.
He doesn’t turn back. He doesn’t want her to see him like this. He makes such a terrible friend, he should be happy for her. Happy that after a bloody bumpy road, Emma and Neal finally found each other.
He hates them for it.
“Not much. How’s the bride feeling?”
Summer crickets playfully sing behind them.
He hopes he doesn’t sound as bitter as the taste on the tip of his tongue. His fingers absently play with his flask of rum.
“Pretty good,” she answers back, and it’s not really the answer one would expect after such a wonderful wedding. “How…how is your hand?”
Oh right, this. The worst part about missing a limb is that everyone can see it, there’s no pretending it didn’t hurt, and they all stare at him with pity. It’s part of the reasons why he didn’t want to come to Emma’s wedding. (Emma didn’t stare, of course. Emma tried to mend him, but there was too much to heal.)
“Well, still missing, but generally good.” His words come out harsher than intended and he blames the rum.
“I tried to call you, to thank you for my birthday present. But you never answered,” she risks once again, and this time the little tremor in her voice makes him shift.
He is urged by a need to look at her, stare at her big, green eyes glinting in the dimness. After all this time, his heart still stops. How is that she still looks the same, only more beautiful, and he’s a wreck?
He paints another smile on his face, fingers clutching hard on his flask.
“I’m glad you liked my present, Swan. And I am, really, happy for you” he finally affirms. He says it because the whole universe expects him to and it is easier to divert her attention.
He really wishes he were good enough to sincerely think the words he utters. But he cannot.
He sees her shoulders fall just the slightest bit forward, as if she is relieved, and he can’t believe he genuinely fooled her. Perhaps she is just unwilling to fight. He cannot blame her.
“Good,” she exhales, smiles, turns a burning knife into his chest, “Because you matter to me. You know that, right, Killian?”
That hurts. It nearly knocks him out, and he has to hold on to the rail of the balcony. The cold metal beneath his fingers grounds him.
An unknown, mystical force – rum – suddenly pushes him to move towards her, against all of his inner principles. “I hope you know, Swan,” he begins, and he has gotten dangerously close to her. Closer than he’s allowed himself in weeks now. He stares at her lips, shakes his head. She’s staring back just as intensely. “I hope you know how much I love you – ”
The words are out before he’s aware of them, and her eyes widen. Fuck. He thinks he sees panic in her eyes.
He’s quick to utter the end of his sentence. “—as my friend, my oldest friend, and I’m so glad you finally found your happy ending.”
He sees her glance go back and forth between his eyes, and he can tell she’s not breathing any more than he is. Fuck. He’s ruined everything again, hasn’t he?
Finally, a smile cracks her face open and he knows she does it for both of their sake. “Right. Of course. You’re my best friend, Killian.”
And she reaches for him, for his good hand – touching his missing limb would have just been too much for both of them – and wraps her arms against his chest. He hopes he doesn’t stink. He very solemnly hugs her back, thanks the darkness around them for hiding the one tear that goes down his cheek. This is nothing like the embraces they used to exchange with a very desperate, very innocent affection years ago.
She’s touching him but she still feels a thousand miles away as he gently rubs her back, lost in her scent, and somehow it feels like if he tried, he could bring them back. But he cannot.
And when she backs away, his grip gets a little bit tighter around her knuckles, panic rising in his chest, and her bracelet rings one last time. He cannot lose her.
But she isn’t his to lose.
And then she smiles at him, and in that smile she reminds him there is no war to be fought anymore.
It kills him. “Go back inside, Swan. I’ll join you quickly,” he finally whispers and presses a kiss over her knuckles.
He would burn in hell to kiss her again. She won’t let him. That’s only fair.
Questions echo in her eyes as she gazes at him one last time, and he swears a gentle, pink hue colors her cheeks. The time for asking questions and pondering over answers is over, too. That was a long time ago. They never found any answers.
“Sure thing,” Emma eventually replies, and the few steps she takes to disappear into the night leave him boneless.
She did not look back. Of course not. She never looks back, now. (He left her hanging with her eyes twitching too long for her to ever look back again.)
And he is stuck looking at the door behind which she disappeared, wondering if he could have held her back.
If he could have held them back.

Next Phase Montage
tl;dr -- Good news!
npm, Inc., is being purchased by GitHub.
The public registry remains public, free, and as available as ever.
npm as you know it continues, and in fact, there is good reason to believe that it'll only get better.
I'm still going to be working on npm (but with the luxury of more resources and less stress).
I'm really excited about the stuff we're going to do.
It is customary for a founder, in the closing chapter of their startup, to ruminate in a blog post about their incredible journey1. When we founded npm, Inc., I knew that I was signing up for a post like this someday. I'm extremely thankful that this is the one I get to write2.
history and origin
Back in 2009, after too long without a vacation, I quit my job, in hopes of discovering what happens when I untether my creativity.
What happened is I wrote a package manager.
I created npm with the goal of sharing modules in a tiny group of nerdy weirdos who'd decided to write web servers in JavaScript. From that niche beginning, npm grew, slowly but surely, the background project I'd greedily steal away time for.
At the end of 2013, npm hit a rough spot and we had to make a decision. This was the first big bookmark in the npm story, when the project could no longer survive on donations. We made some slide decks and raised an amount of money that seemed enormous at the time, but inevitably got spent really fast.
the part where i talk about startups
Running a company is hard. It is grueling, unglamorous work.
I don't want to make it sound completely terrible. There are definitely a few awesome parts. But once is enough for me.
Throughout this journey, our north star has been the mission that we founded this company with: reduce friction in JavaScript software development.
I have a set of goals that I wrote down back then, and have shared openly with the team. They haven't changed much.
Keep the npm registry running forever (not only for the life of the company).
Be a company that we can all enjoy working at, and do the best work of our careers up until now.
Get a big enough exit that I can quit my job and see what comes out of me a second time.
Share the rewards equitably with the people who got npm to where it is.
There are few unmitigated successes or failures in the real world. But this is a win, and a good one, for me and the team and the entire JavaScript community.
We have made tremendous progress on (1), and that's the thing I'm happiest about in this. As far as (2), there's been ups and downs, to say the least, but the bright spots outshine the dark. I've lost some valued friendships in the process, but made a few as well. On (3), well, I'm still working a jobby job, but I always knew that was a long shot, and "make npm a better package manager" is a job I enjoy. And as for (4), I'm proud of the deals that we've been able to negotiate for the team.
It's not a kajillion billion dollar 10x startup cinderella story, and we've taken our hits, but in the end we've done right by our community, team, and careers, and I'm extremely proud of what we've achieved.
the part where i talk about the company buying us
One of the questions founders get asked a lot is "what might your exit look like?" I always mentioned the big tech companies as possibilities, and GitHub as a sort of "wishful thinking" option.
I've been following GitHub's trajectory closely since they came to Yahoo! to give a talk about git and social coding way back in 20093. It's been a huge part of my life ever since I dove head-first into open source as a lifestyle choice.
When I saw the GitHub Packages beta announcement and demo at GitHub HQ in San Francisco, I remember turning to Shanku Niyogi and clumsily blurting out, "Why aren't you trying to buy us?"
It seemed so maddeningly... obvious. Forget about whose logo is on which webpage, just... if you're going to do this thing, do it right, ffs. This clearly needs to be integrated with the actual registry in a very deep way. "I mean... You see that, right?" (I think he probably did. And if he didn't, then props to him for taking my reaction as flattery or a good idea, rather than condescension.)
What I didn't really expect at the beginning of the acquisition process was how much I'd genuinely like everyone I met at GitHub, starting with my initial conversations with Nat, as well as all the people on the team he's built. As we dug into the technical and strategic plans for how npm would fit into the vision of GitHub moving forward, it became clear that this isn't just a good option for the JavaScript community -- it's significantly better than what npm, Inc., can provide on its own.
There are not many companies that can claim to have the kind of fanatical commitment to open source that GitHub does. In the track record of Nat and the team he's assembled, there's really something special here that I'm thrilled to be a part of.
I've said countless times before that I wouldn't let the registry go someplace that won't take care of it. (See goal (1) above. I've sacrificed years of my life and put a strain on many personal and professional relationships in pursuit of that goal.)
As GitHub has branched out into other aspects of the end-to-end developer community experience, it's natural to see how the JavaScript package management process fits into that story. It's not a loss leader or an experimental add-on or a way to quickly hire a team. Rather, the npm registry is a significant and concrete strategic asset serving GitHub's mission of eliminating transaction costs in software development.
That's important.
the part about what comes next
Today, npm serves over 1.3 million packages to roughly 12 million developers, who download these things 75 billion times a month, and all of this is growing at a rate that ensures these massive numbers will seem small in a few years.
Our commitment to that community is to keep the npm registry free for open source development for the foreseeable future, and continue to improve the npm CLI. At GitHub, npm will have the added support and backing of one of the world's largest companies, behind the world's largest community of developers.
There are some awesome opportunities for improvement in the npm experience, to meaningfully improve life for JS devs in countless large and small ways. We'll be making things more reliable, convenient, and connected for everyone across our vast interdependent JavaScript ecosystem.
For six years, in the grind of a startup, we've had dreams too big to dare hope for. This next chapter is a chance to realize those dreams.
This is the end of "npm, Inc.", the Delaware C Corp. But it's an exciting upgrade for npm.
[1]: Reference joke Our Incredible Journey
[2]: It's also worth noting that GitHub allowed such a long, nuanced, and candid announcement as this one, and didn't push for a watered down corporate version. Cultural alignment is a good sign.
[3]: Check out the date on the post for that talk. Then note the date on this commit. It's like some kind of cryptic message from the past, and it's weirding me out, tbh.

Solid Chaos - Part 4
Note: I got a request from @drakesfiance for a fic
Summary: Living in a world were The Avengers exist and save the world repeatedly you find yourself one morning with inhuman abilities of your own. How will your boyfriend Tom react when he get´s back from his audition?
Author: @sabine-leo
Idea of: @drakesfiance
Part: 4/ 5
Genre: Angst, Humor, Fluff, Uncertainty, Slight Smut
The wait for the other shoe to drop was stressing you out. You were back in New York for 2 weeks now. Tom and you had enjoyed the little piece and quiet back home in London. Loki had teased Tom permanently and had tried to walk in on the two of you more than once after the first “incident”.
There was a connection between the 3 of you that was undeniable. Tom and Loki had fought about how to protect you the best and came to the conclusion that they´d just sandwich you between them when it would come to a fight. Leaving them to their discussion with an eyeroll you went into the lab to see what Bruce and Tony has accomplished in the last 2 days.
“Hey there!” You greeted them and Tony looked up with a half-smile.
“Ohhh good that you came, we are actually ready for you to test the suit.”
“Are we?” Banner asked a little surprised. “What about the glitches and the…”
Tony shut him up. “glitches...snitches…what would live be without a bit of risk!”
Bruce wanted to disagree again but Tony had made his way to you and clicked a delicate looking bracelet onto your wrist. He winked at you and activated it with a little tip of his finger.
The look Banner had on his face was not very encouraging, and your face probably looked as shocked too. You felt a tight material forming around your arm and looked down in stunned silence. A suit build itself around your body in mere seconds. Looking like black leather with hints of blue and green streaks forming a delicate ornateness and hugging your body. But it wasn´t leather…it was an even more shielding material which could take some hits without you being injured.
“Wow!” was all you got out as you watched your body transform and then in its state of dress in the reflecting glass front.
Tony grinned and looked at Banner as if he wanted to say TOLD YA
Banner just shook his head and began to explain to you.
“This suit is a formidable armour against many threats that could come your way. You can activate a head shield if you want by just saying so. It´s programmed to your voice and will react in a blink of an eye. Also, there are hidden sheets for knives and your katana on your back. You need to train to move in it but it should not feel different to you for more than a day.”
Tony stood in front of you like a proud dad and grinned saying:
“Just say …retract…or think about it and it will vanish. Leave the bracelet on at all times, its so delicate that it should go with everything you want to dress in.”
You laughed “Since when are you into fashion Tony?!” Banner snorted and coughed out a laugh.
You tried to think retract and the suit was gone in a second. “Awesome!” you grinned.
“When your abilities grow, the suit will grow with it. But now let’s see how you move in it…”
Tony shushed you into the gym. On your way you met Tom and Loki who both were searching for you. “There you are darling…!” Tom kissed you and looked into your eyes. Before you could say anything, Tony began to speak.
“(Y/N) will have a merry go around with the both of you. Get ready. She will defend herself against both of you. And I hope she´ll put you on your sorry behinds.”
Tom and Loki looked at each other in disbelief.
“Don´t think I …or JARVIS… didn´t hear your discussion about shielding her in a fight. Don´t belittle her abilities and training.. TRUST her!”
Tom and Loki said in unison : “We do trust her.”
“Well then let´s see how good she got!” Tony winked at you.
“Great pep talk…” Banner added “…way to go to make her nervous.”
You went into the gym and took your position in the middle of the mats. Tony threw you the trainings katana and nodded at you. Tom was hesitant at first but Loki just shrugged and came at you full speed. You ducked his first blow and rolled to your left. Then Tom decided he´d join in and you had to do a double spin to get out of his range. It wasn´t easy to have your eyes on both of them but you managed to defend yourself for a minute. “NOW!” Tony yelled “Attack not only defend!”
“Shield!” You said and the suit formed around you as you flipped back to get out of the way of Loki´s kick. Seeing the astonishment of Loki and Tom and the sudden stop in their action made you grin and boost into an attack. With a sidekick you lifted Loki of his feet onto his behind and Tom suffered the same fate as you unbalanced him with a trick you learned in self-defence.
Sure, it was not fair that you had taken the moment of advantage but HYDRA wouldn´t fight fair too, so you´d better start to earn some tricks yourself.
“Darling…” Tom stared at you and his grin got a little wicked. “You look ravishing!”
Loki snorted not very princelike and rolled is eyes. “There we go.. his mind is in the gutter already…But I must say you do look rather scorching in that leather with MY green curling along your sides…” He grinned pleased with himself and his comment.
“Oh please, the blue is like the blue of my eyes…and it´s front and centre…not ONLY on the sides”
Looking down on those two men who looked a bit alike but were like night and day you grinned a little. “Now.. would you get up and fight like a god and a very talented, hot human who is MINE or would you like to discuss fashion a while longer?” Tom grinned and jumped up, held out a hand to Loki and said “If I get to her first you need to stop walking in on us!” Loki laughed and his gaze got mischievous. “And if I win, I get to join in!”
“And if I win you both admit that you became friends in the last weeks. And tell everybody that you dressed up as the other one that one night to get on my nerves.”
Loki looked a bit horrified and Tom laughed out loud.
Now it was time for Tony and Bruce to stare in disbelief before they started to chortle.
The brakes were off now. This was the test you needed. The three of you fought in chilling and mind-numbing crashes of swords, knives and bodies. Loki and Tom trying to get to you separately at first but soon joining the effort. You had some close calls were they almost had you but your suit was just awesome. It somehow sensed their moves and helped you to duck and roll out of range. With the headshield on you could analyse their movements and arrange an attack in milliseconds. Tony and Bruce hadn´t told you about that feature but they fist bumped as they saw you in action.
Sweaty and breathless the three of you called a tie after half an hour.
“retract” You gasped and lay down on the mat. Tom crawling over to you and kissing you panting himself. “I love you (Y/N) that was tremendous…tiring and bruising but tremendous!”
Loki hoisted himself up in a sitting position. “Forget the threesome, I´m rather fatigued.”
That made the three of you laugh to disbelieving stares of Tony and Bruce again.
The next day Tom got a suit of his own. Banner had worked tirelessly to get it done while Tony had focused on yours. In form of a stylish watch Tom now had his amour on him without anyone being the wiser. Seeing your boyfriend in a leather black and blue suit made you daydream a little. He looked so very hot in it that he sure as hell wouldn´t need to defend from HYDRA women soldiers, because they wouldn´t attack…only stare.
After another 2 weeks of training you decided with Tom to move back into the hotel and see what would happen next. You were as ready as could be, training your abilities with Loki had helped you a great deal to get them under control and not accidentally falling through a wall or disappear into thin air again. Behaving as a normal couple on a holiday Tom and you tried not to look around to suspicious when outside.
One night you surprised Tom with two tickets to a Broadway Show. Tom kissed you until you could only giggle and wrap your arms around him. “This is the best surprise ever darling.” You smiled and said “Dress up love, I want to see you in a sexy suit tonight” Tom grinned and winked at you.
“You only want to undress me afterwards!” Giggling by his comment you nodded.
“You may be right, but you haven´t seen me in my dress…be careful as you might have that wish yourself!”
Coming out of the bathroom after dressing and putting on a little makeup Tom gasped as he took in the sight of you. Your shoulder-free long black dress with a cut out back was fitting your curves well.
You could see him gulp and undress you with his eyes. They became hooded a longing.
The sight you had was no less ravishing. His 3-piece suit in a deep black with a bow tie and white dress shirt look stunning on him. You could see his lean frame hugged by the fabric and he held himself like a king ready to greet his subjects. This man in front of you was yours, you still couldn´t believe it, even after all those years.
“Darling…” Tom came over to you and lifted your head with a finger under your chin.
“You are a sight to behold.. in that dress, in your suit ..it doesn´t matter when I look at you.. all I can see is my future with you….” Smiling at him you took his free hand.
“I love you with every piece of my humble heart…” he ended and kissed you.
The show was fantastic and you and Tom had a good time together. Relaxed and not looking over your shoulder every second you enjoyed the time. Walking out of the theatre hand in hand you smiled at each other and walked to the car Tom had leased for tonight.
Coming nearer your bracelet got hot and Toms watch malfunctioned. Looking at each other you watched the car for a second and saw a little red-light blinking. “SHIELD!” both of you yelled instantly and ran as fast as you could away from the car.
BOOM
A big fireball erupted and the shockwave send you flying against a nearby door. Completely shielded you only needed to grasp a new breath as the last one got knocked out of you.
“Get Loki!” Tom said into his suit system and stood up ready to defend.
You followed and stood by his side.
“We wanted you to come with us in peace at first.” A menacing voice sounded out of a dark corner of the parking lot. “But now that you have teamed up with those abominations of heroes…You need to be extinguished.” The voice came into the light and with it his 4 companions. All huge and frightening looking man…inhumans with weapons you hadn´t seen before.
Tom looked strained and stressed out a little at the sight of them.
“Don´t get hurt darling, I need you in one piece to marry me when this is over!”
“What?” you gasped and look at him.
“Just throwing it out there as an incentive to survive!”
Loki appeared next to you in that second. “You and I need to have a talk about wooing woman and proposing after that Tom.” He took out his 2 knives and grinned devilish his voice from exasperated with Tom getting menacing and dark as he addressed your opponents.
“You choose the wrong ones to mess with this time. KNEEL or be ready to die fighting!”
After that all hell broke loose. You were pretty sure that not a single car would be usable after this fight would find its end.
You hoped to got that the end would be to your favour.

Interview with the Creators of The Tribe - Raymond Thompson and Harry Duffin!
Where did the idea for the Tribe come from? Why does the Tribe have Zoot, Amber, Bray and the other characters? Where is the Tribe set? The Interviews section is where you will find the answers to these questions and many more from interviews with the cast and behind the scenes members of the Cloud 9 team who make the Tribe. We have received loads of emails and letters with questions about the Tribe both on-screen and off-screen - and there are more questions posted each day on Tribe Talk. Many of the answers to these questions will be given by the people featured in the Interviews section. In this interview, we are pleased to put forward 20 questions to the creators and devisors of the Tribe, Raymond Thompson (who is also the Executive Producer) and Harry Duffin (who is also the Script Consultant for the series). The answers to the questions are given below as RT for Raymond Thompson, and HD for Harry Duffin. You will also be able to find some other interviews with Raymond Thompson about his role as Executive Producer of the Tribe, and with Harry Duffin in his role as Script Consultant, by clicking on the READ OTHER INTERVIEWS link at the top of this page. There will be more interviews with members of cast - and other behind the scenes members of the Cloud 9 team - in the near future. We would like to thank Raymond Thompson and Harry Duffin for their time as they are extremely busy working on Tribe Series 2. THE INTERVIEW 1. What are your names? Raymond Thompson (RT) and Harry Duffin (HD) 2. Where did the idea for The Tribe come from? RT: I have always been intrigued with the notion of a new world order which probably emanates from coming of age in the 60`s where young people were tremendously affected by the cultural explosion of music, fashion and political climate at the time. Over the years, and with each generation, there has been an element of the rebellious, a feeling that the adults have somehow “screwed up” and that the new generation can build a better world. So the tribe has been simmering for several years in my mind in abstract terms and is a great vehicle to portray the theme of the young inheriting the earth and rebuilding society in their own image (the prime theme of the series is examination of whatever that image might be). HD: A magical moment for Ray Thompson. One of those gifts a writer sometimes gets, if he/she listens hard enough. Never question where a great idea comes from, just say `thanks` and use it. 3. From the idea and concept for the series that became The Tribe, what was the process involved in turning it from an idea - into a series? How was the idea expanded and developed into a series? RT: As a writer with a reasonable track record I have been approached on several occasions to develop new products which tends to be derivative of past successes. I enjoyed enormous acclaim working on Howard`s Way and for a time was approached to develop further soaps which was not really of any interest to me. When I was approached by Nick Wilson of Channel 5 to develop a soap for the millennium targeting a child/adolescent market I was attracted by the notion of structuring a normal framework for human interplay within an abnormal backdrop. I have often described The Tribe as Mad Max meets Neighbours or The Terminator meets Home And Away and was particularly encouraged by Nick`s supportive attitude to really push the boundaries and let my imagination go to develop a series with attitude which could be edgy and as unique as I want it (limited only by the imagination) as long as the issues remain truthful and reflected the world children and young people inhabit. I had worked with Harry Duffin on several occasions and admired his skill as a writer but, above all, his interest in producing quality television which we both believe can only be achieved with conviction and integrity and I thought that Harry would be an ideal collaborator. Harry also shares a love of writers and the creative process. After we exchanged thoughts and ideas we wrote an initial treatment (which basically is a series synopsis and character breakdown) we recruited a team of writers and began discussing the premise. This process is a fulfilling and rewarding one whereby each member of the writing team contributed to the creative discussion and within the brief and before long the tribe started to take shape. HD: how long have I got? Basically, Ray and I tossed around potential characters, and I chatted with a fellow writer, Mike Kenny, who works closely with the age-group, about teenagers attitudes today, because my two daughters are grown up, so I`m not as in touch with teenage life as regularly as I used to be [sadly]. From there we produced a basic premise, only a page or two, character outlines, and an outline for episode one [which changed in the development process, as they always do]. Then I got together a team of writers, [about ten initially] and we developed the story format.
5. Was there anything you were particularly looking to include in how The Tribe evolved? RT: I was personally very keen to develop a series that would challenge and stimulate an audience rather than rely on lowest common denominator storylines and I think the tribe certainly poses some interesting questions about the world we all inhabit. Interwoven with this I was very keen to portray an attitude and look so that the characters, as well as the world they inhabit, remained creditable. Young people, for example, through the ages have always used fashion to express themselves and I think the look of The Tribe represents young people of the future and says a lot about their attitudes and aspirations. HD: Problems for our characters to solve in their new world. Problems of technology, how to get clean water, some form of power, and also problems of morality. If there`s no one around to tell you how to behave how do you behave? Weıd all have different answers, like Zoot`s attitude versus Amber`s. 6. What were you not looking to include in the evolution of The Tribe? RT: Again, I was very keen to push the boundaries and ensure that we did not trivialise the subject matter of The Tribe. With a series of this genre it would be quite easy to become cliché and negative and to side step some of the hard hitting issues that we intended to explore. And overall, I am very proud that we remained truthful to the original ideal in developing The Tribe and confronted every element rather than run from them to take creative refuge and perhaps ignore the issues we set out to explore. Those issues I believe have been tackled in a multi-dimensional way and I hope are provocative to allow an audience to draw their own conclusions of what is right or wrong in the realisation that the very root of morality is often grey and we have tried to portray that (ie. that issues are not only black and white and often grey). HD: First and foremost, we didn`t want to glorify violence. In the anarchic world of `The Tribe`, [like our own world, sadly] some form of violence is inevitable. But there`s quite enough in the commercial cinema, and we wanted to show there are different things to aspire to. 7. Why are there so many main characters? RT: It is essential to fuel storylines via the character interplay. HD: For a `soap` there aren`t that many characters. Most UK soaps have over twenty and counting. As The Tribe develops, no doubt we`ll introduce new characters and increase the number too. But like any story with a vast canvas, [as we hope ours has], you need a number of main characters to fuel the storylines. Think of most of Dickens novels, or `Vanity Fair` or any number of great stories. 8. What audience age group were you looking to aim at when developing The Tribe? RT: The Tribe is targeted primarily at an audience age of 8 to 18 but we believe that the series can be enjoyed by all outside that age group who are interested in soaps with the subject matter. HD: From eight to eighty. Iıve always believed that a great story for kids, should be able to be enjoyed by adults. Go to any classic Disney film in the cinema and watch the adults gazing spellbound. Have you seen `Toy Story`?. A great script. Beats the newest `Star Wars` effort hands down for story and character. 9. Why are there no adults in the series? RT: All the adults have died within our storylines but some adults might appear at some point… HD: Haven`t you been paying attention? Theyıve all been wiped out by the virus! Or have they…? Wait and see… 10. How long did The Tribe take to create and develop - over what period of time? RT: In actual real time approximately two years to bring the first series to fruition (ie from the time I discussed the project with Nick Wilson at Channel 5 to the time the first series was broadcast) but, as previously mentioned, I have wanted to do this series for several years as it houses radical issues which are both profound and dramatic - and I know that Harry Duffin has also wanted to explore these as well for a very long time. HD: About ninety years - which is how long Ray and I have been fascinated by stories and story-telling. Oh, you mean actually? Ray threw the idea at me in November [`97] and we produced our first block of four scripts by July `98.
11. Why are the main Tribe characters based in a shopping mall? RT: We needed a base where the Tribe could interact as a group for both logistical reasons and creative. Within the shopping mall there is also intriguing shops for the characters themselves to inhabit so that privately and collectively the writers have a unique framework to explore the character development and interplay. HD: Mazlo`s hierarchy of needs states that one of womankind`s basic priorities is safe shelter [and mankind`s, for that matter.] The mall is defendable, [to a degree], itıs got separate places for our guys to make their own, and more importantly, it keeps all our main characters together, which for us writers is essential. Otherwise youı`d have a lot of scenes with people talking to themselves. Very boring. 12. Is The Tribe meant to be set anywhere in particular? RT: The Tribe is set anywhere in the world. HD: Mo. It`s supposed to be universal, really. In the universe, but who knows where? Is it on earth? Maybe. Only time, and the muse, will reveal all… 13. How did you decide upon the issues that would feature in the storylines - such as environmental messages, teenage pregnancy or bulimia? RT: I think young people have always been very much in tune spiritually and tend to be more elemental than material and this is always an interesting area to explore which usually manifests in themes of idealism. As far as other issues in rebuilding a new world we are able to focus on technology and the environment and science and all that that entails which provides fuel for good storylines. We have also tried to examine issues that young people live everyday of their life from bullying to bulimia and all of this has been interwoven with the emotional interplay which always drives the best drama (ie the examination of inner conflict and the loves, fears, betrayals and ambitions within a group of people). HD: Look around you, buddy. What`s out there is what we use. We don`t want to preach, but we do want to reflect life as it really is. Bulimia is a tragedy that often affects teenage girls a very close friend of mine suffered from it, and it`s her experience that drove our story for Salene. It`s the same with every issue we include. Whatıs more important than the environment, the world we rely on for our very life? [except maybe our latestboy/girlfriend, rave, movie idol?] I joke. Our main aim is to entertain and engage an audience, but if the series gets some people thinking, who wouldn`t otherwise have thought about things, then that`s great. 14. Are there any ideas that were considered in the development of The Tribe - but that were not used? RT: The creative process is a painful and arduous one and ideas are forever being dropped or changed. And so approximately 10% of ideas discussed end up being scripted and even then end up evolving right up until the material is shot and committed. Its organic. The strength for any good series lies in the writing. That is the sole creative area. All other areas are interpretive (although that process itself requires a creative expertise) in the sense that someone has interpreted something that a writer has created. HD: Tons. For every ten ideas thrown up in development, maybe only a couple would be used. It`s an experiment. What works, what doesn`t work? And thatıs only a matter of opinion, of taste, instinct. Some names, like Zoot [dreamed up by our lead writer, Dave Fox] come ready made. Others you have to work at, like choosing a name for a baby. What works for PaulaYates might not be right for you or me. Secret: Bob, the dog, was originally called Sherbert, but the dog responded better to it`s real name, and the youngsters in the cast had made friends with the real dog and kept calling it `Bob` during the takes. After about take twenty was ruined, it was decided to give up and let the dog win.
15. What messages does The Tribe say to its audience? RT: I hope the message is a positive one. The notion of what happens in a series is totally different to what a series is about. Everyone knows what happens in The Tribe but that is not necessarily what the series is about and I would hope that the Mall Rats tribe and their aspirations and triumphs through their various encounters and adversities is a shining testament which will inspire a viewer to realise that human grasp can, and does, extend beyond reach and that there is always hope whereby good triumphs in the end. The prime underlying thematic is young people rebuilding a new world and in that context the theme is a profound one about conscientiousness determining existence or existence determining conscientiousness. This question and theme has challenged humanity since time began and it is doubtful whether there is an answer to that question. The soul of that question has inspired some of the greatest political minds of our time and although Marxist dogma might fall on the side that existance determines conscientiousness - I hope that the Tribe portrays that conscientiousness, in the end determines existence. Within our character interplay we have structured various voices to represent all kinds of theories (ie. Tai-San is mystical, Bray the elemental, Jack the practical, et cetera) but within the human condition overall I believe that the emotions of all the characters in the Tribe lies within us all. Some aspects are dormant, others lie sleeping and just need to awaken, others run rampant. But overall I think the storylines will entertain on one level, but on another level I sincerely hope that that are provocative enough for an audience to question whom why, what, where. HD: I think I`ve answeres some of that earlier. We`re not trying to `educate`, but we are trying to provoke a response. And yes, out main `hero` characters do have a positive attitude to life. I know Zoot is very popular (some of you guys are very weird!) but would you really like him as your own best mate? Boyfriend? You could argue that he is being positive in his own way, I guess, the only way he knows how in a dangerous world, but putting the world back together again isn`t just about looking after number one, is it? 16. What do you feel is the best thing about the Tribe - and why? RT: I think the best thing about The Tribe is its vision and scope and the fact that it is a landmark series and a brave one for all concerned to embark upon. HD: Everything. I love it. It`s a crazy world and guess what? It`s set to get crazier yet! 17. What advice would you give to anybody reading this who might have their own idea for a series - how should they go about progressing it? RT: Writing is like everything else in life and if a person believes in something then they must vigorously pursue it no matter what anyone else thinks if they believe in their heart that what they are seeking is right. No-one has a monopoly on what is good or bad in writing - it is purely subjective and it has been my experience that the key to success as a writer - like anything else in life - is patience and persistance. Nothing succeeds like persistance - but it can take some time and this requires patience. HD: The most common problem about series ideas is that though they may be exciting initially, they often don`t have what we call `legs` in our business. That means the premise wonıt hold or develop over a period of time. So my best advice is, don`t write episode one, write episode ten, or a hundred and ten. If it`s still exciting then, you may have a winner. 18. Is The Tribe a one-off series or an on-going series? RT: Harry Duffin and I, and indeed all members of the Cloud 9 team, believe that The Tribe can run forever. But the ultimate deciding factor is the audience. As long as the fans want to view the series and then every member of the team will be happy to produce it. HD: Ray and I think it can last forever. But that`s for you guys to decide. It`ll last as long as you watch it. 19. When is the tribe set - how long after the adults disappeared? RT: Notionally we think in terms of 9 months after the adults disappear. HD: We figured about six to nine months. 20. What about series 2 of the tribe - what aspects do the back-story elements look at? RT: With the series of the tribe we have a definitive story structure about the world our characters inhabit. The characters themselves also have their own history and in series 2 we explore an interesting back story and will continue to show elements of what happened before which I think will interest viewers when they are witnessing what happens now and second guessing what will happen in the future. HD: There`s a great back-storyline about how Bray, Ebony, Trudy and Zoot were before the virus. If you ever wanted to know how Zoot became the Zoot we all love to hate, all will be revealed in series two.

Is that it?
For the first time, I’m sitting at home in Estonia and writing this blog. I came here to ride Estonian Championships in X-Country Marathon. Before I even came here, I got disturbing news that my cycling licence is registered wrong in the system, that ment no Championships for me. Since I already got the tickets and all was planned, I decided to ride the race anyways. Which also ment that my shoulders drop, nerves were under control and everything looked fine, until the very morning. Cannot really put words on it what happens in my head, but nothing makes sense anymore. I wanna quit. I don’t feel it´s worth it. This tremendous fight in me makes it challenging to continue. So, when a random questions led to changing the category to Estonian Championships 1 hour before the start, it didn’t really affect me at all. The guy I was talking to was the chief referee, apparently. So it was kind of a good thing that the licence posed problems to begin with.
But, maybe the lack of preparedness made it worse this time? I saw couple of videos of the race online and it looked really scary- I´ve always been scared of heights and there are many places on this race when you ride on the edge of a cliff- Estonia is pancake flat, yes, but it has some hI´lls. True story! Also I had no plans of hydration since I counted on neutral zones, while most of the other riders had teams to rely on. Maybe if I had a plan and though a peace of mind, something would have been better, different the very morning? I don’t really know! I’ve always struggled before the races, well almost every time. I’ve had a whole season where the nerves were under control no matter the race! So, I’m aware that it´s all in our heads?! For sure! And I know something can be done to hold the head on the surface. But what can you do about it, really? How to calm down, think straight thoughts, or not think of anything? I guess it has also something to do with expectations. So the real question is: does it really matter in the terms of result, if one has high expectations or simply show up to have fun? -GIVEN that preps are done! Maybe not.. Maybe not. What are expectations? Define that! I’m starting to think that it´s simply some pile of bullSHIT! Expectations=how things should be=pretend to be a prophet=religion of futurism=fantasy=ambitions? While I’m always telling others to let go of prejudices, expectations and go with the flow, but have ambitions and wI´ll to do better… Then I’m doing exact the opposite my self. Maybe I should start being a bad example?! Start living rather than fantasising. Maybe even stop having ambitions and simply be the best version of my self?
Well, maybe the fact that my life´s once again at a cross road makes it a bit more difficult to tackle? Maybe my mental capacity ain´t big enough to overcome all the pressure right now? What are these «other» things? Well, their all personal. But I can say so much- nothing in my future is given right now. Maybe, for my health sake, I should take time off from racing? It´s just as simple as that- the pressure is unbearable and I felt it both before and while racing. I made a mistakes for sure. As I rode two hours without eating anything, just drinking. 29th place was more than ok and I HOPED that it would hold. But then the hammer appeared and hit me hard! And then the bad feelings, thoughts, black hole manifested. I started to think of quitting. Didn´t feel sufficed. So after a while, an hour or so, I realised that I was riding in emergency mode (ref. cars that are having severe problems). Then the very best, Greete S, come from nowhere and parked me. I really tried hard to keep her back a while and when opportunity presented it´self, I wished to contribute. But nothing, she was simply superior at that time. After a while, I stopped for a couple of minutes, cheered on my competition, ate 3 bars and drank a little. After a while, stopped in a feeding zone and eat some bread, Estonian black bread! A sausage. Some bananas. Drank some more fluids. Cheered on the second lady. And then continued the journey. And yes, after a long while, the energy stores were restored and I got the speed up. Catch up some racers and even passed them and made them pay parking tickets. All-in-all, 56th out of 125 racers. 50min lost to 1st place. 12 min behind the very best Estonian WChampion.
Now it has been 2 days since that race. I’ve made some analyses on Strava and I cannot really hide myself behind some data that prove that things would have been better IF and so on. I started really hard, too hard. I was climbing up from 32nd place to 29th and kept it going for a while, until the world famous Hammer! My level ain´t that high on single trails, flat, sandy ground. It might sound like I’m defending myself right now, but that really ain´t the case. It´s simply a explanation of what does not suit me. On contrary, hI´lls and climbs suit me very well, easier ground and some gravel too. So, yes, I’m not a complete biker! Far from it. But until now, I’ve fought a fair fight. In my own head, I believe, in a way, I can be related to a fictional character, Rocky Balboa:
«…it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!”
― Sylvester Stallone, Rocky Balboa
So, to sum up. I´m not saying that I´ll quit. I simply say that I´ll choose to meet up to have fun from now on. I’m done with getting so nervous that It squeezes out all the fun and will to ride my bike. That doesn’t mean that my competition should feel neglected- when I do meet up for a race, I´ll do my very best, yes I will! But I´ll act as if it´s only for fun.
If you feel a bit a bit frustrated because some of it, think all of it is bullCrap, shame! It´s my personal blog and its not open for criticising. And yes, all of it is personal and IF you feel like some of it also apply to you, good, maybe I was to help? In the end, I´ll print it out as a «book» and hand to my kids one day. Hopefully it’ll happen one day :D
But. I cannot forget the the most important part of it all. To honour the winners. Petter Pruus, Greete Steinburg and all the others before me, after me. I’ve ridden about 50 different races in my career and this was the most insane single track race ever! About 85km singles is tough call no matter how you look at it! Chapeau! Jõelähtme Rattamaraton is truly a mekka for riders who enjoy themselves on single trails!
Thank you for reading! I´ll now be heading to Dolomites to ride Sellaronda HERO, oh well.. to have fun on Sellaronda HERO. This ride suits me pretty well! So I´ll go for my personal best this year and leave it all on the mountains there. My wish is to cross the finish line, happy, satisfied and proud. But, if it doesn´t work out well, I´ll go for a great tour :D It´s amazing place!

Jeff Kamikow Livingston | From Livingston to Broadway: Local Stars Shine Bright
If you’re a fan of Broadway shows like I am, you know that stars from all over the world strive to make it to the Great White Way. And yet, even with competition from international talent, the small town of Livingston, NJ has supplied a tremendous amount of talent to the Great White Way. Let’s take a look at just a handful of the many stars that have called Livingston home.
Jason Alexander - Best known for his role as George Costanza on Seinfield, Jason Alexander was raised in Livingston, performing high school musicals and studying with a local voice teacher for years before getting his big break. On the New York stage, Alexander was a successful song and dance man. He appeared in the off-Broadway hit Personals, as well as starring in the Sondheim classic, M errily We Roll Along. He played a lead role in Kander and Ebb’s The Rink with the legendary Liza Minelli and Chita Rivera. Alexander took a Tony-winning turn in Jerome Robbins’ Broadway in 1989.
Nikki M. James - Part of the next generation of talent, Nikki M. James did her hometown proud when she took home a Tony for her hilarious portrayal of Nabulungi in Book of Mormon. A Broadway veteran, James scored her first role in a less than successful production of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, where she played “Sabina Temple” but understudied none other than Kristin Bell for the leading role of “Becky Thatcher.” Her next role had her working alongside Livingston native Stephen Oremus who arranged the music for the Elvis Presley jukebox musical, A ll Shook Up. The two would reunite on Book of Mormon, and both would be awarded for their work.
Leslie Kritzer
- Leslie jump-started her career at the local LORT theatre, the Papermill Playhouse, in a breakout performance as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl
. The Livingston-born star then headed straight through the tunnel to NYC where she scored a featured role in the long-running production of Hairspray. Between leading roles in L egally Blonde, A Catered Affair and Beetlejuice, Kritzer also starred in On The Town at Encores, sharing the stage with stars Christian Borle and Andrea Martin.
Stephen Oremus - One of Livingston’s greatest success stories comes not FROM the stage, but UNDER it! Stephen Oremus began his career in the pit of the touring production of Rent and went on to win two Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards, and was n ominated for an Emmy, among numerous other honors. Stephen is known for orchestrations and vocal arrangements, and while his resume is actually too long to include, his most famous works include Avenue Q, Wicked and Book of Mormon. He also arranged vocals for Disney movies including Frozen and Coco, and is musical supervisor for the current Broadway production of Frozen. Even if you’ve never been to the theatre (or never seen Frozen) you may have seen Stephen’s work on the live televised musicals, The Wiz and Rent.
Hazel Raymundo - Graduating in the same class as Mr. Oremus, Hazel’s debut on the professional stage came when she went to an open audition for the First National Tour of Miss Saigon while she attended Northwestern University. She landed the leading role of Kim, and has had a bright career ever since. Since that tour, she has appeared in numerous professional shows, including Broadway productions of Pacific Overtures and Avenue Q. Lately, Hazel has been making the rounds on TV, making appearances in shows like “Bull” and “The Blacklist.”
Cathy Trien - Blonde bombshell and triple threat Cathy Trien probably began dancing and singing before she could walk. Modeling as a child, she pursued a career in theatre, garnering roles in Off-Broadway shows including Zombie Prom and The Great American Trailer Park Musical (with Leslie Kritzer), as well as touring as Rizzo with the cast of Grease. She met Peter Scolari on the Grease tour and the two married and worked on Disney’s“H oney, I Shrunk the Kids” series together, but later divorced. Cathy had a featured role in a Broadway revival of Gypsy, understudying Bernadette Peters for the title role.
Brandon Uranowitz
- Born in Livingston and raised in neighbouring West Orange,Brandon Uranowitz is a promising Broadway star who has, at the age of 34, already garnered several Tony Award nominations for his work. Uranowitz won the hearts of theatregoers when he graced the stage of An American in Paris in a featured role that brought him his first Tony nod. He starred in the recent revival of Falsettos that aired on Live from Lincoln Center. With a growing resume that is sure to include several more award nominations, Mr. Uranowitz is just another bright star from a small town just west of the city.

Soulmate au (Pushing Daisies)
N/A: I, like Kitty, like to see each bad situation and learn with it, so...if you erased a content on blog 1 and reblog to blog 2...the content will be deleted.Good to know. This time I´ll try to be shorter.
@djinmer4
In the village of Cerulium, the birth of music and arts as the Seven Kingdoms like to refer, there´s an attraction that evokes the wonder on the cynical of humans. The Temple of Zaorva. This temple, like all the others, can reveal your soulmate. Zaorva is never wrong before.
There´s no magical word describe in your arm, there´s no colourless vision that changes once you see your special one, no, the temple reads your soul and using magic only them understand...they link you to your soulmate.
Kitty Pryde, the lady Necromancer, often heard tales of this magic. Her parents meet in this way and were married until death take them.
I´m older and wiser. I think I want to see who is my soulmate.
The reading of her soul was different from the others. An odd fact as those readings usually takes 5 minutes. The higher priestess was called to perform the reading one last time.
"I don´t have a soulmate?" Kitty asked wondering if that´s the reason for such commotion.
"No, Lady Necromancer, you do....except..." she looks fearful "look, I´m new on the job and this is a situation I´m not prepared, you´re the Necromancer...you can ask this to Zaorva, I don´t know...what to tell you" a sense of dread spread to her body.
Speaking to Zaorva, at least to Kitty, is a mix of a complex and easier task. Once making the spells, the familiar blue hue shows up as blue fire. Zaorva´s voice does transmit confusion equal to the high priestess
"Child...You have a tremendous fate to handle, your soulmate is Kurt Wagner, the Evil Necromancer" Zaorva stated calmly and adds "there´s no way to deny this fact...my other half is in love with this ship and will do anything in his power to make it come true, be ready"
Kitty Pryde just watches in panic as Zaorva leaves. Her soulmate is the vilest and diabolic Necromancer to the point of making HIM looking proud.
"NOPE, NOPE" Kitty berates herself and fate for this. The woman is more resilient than the others think, if Evil Wizard Kurt is her soulmate then Kitty won´t meet this Necromancer ever, after all, the world is a big place.
_____________________________
#First Encounter.
When entering in Cerulium, the first thing she sees is the students of the Evil Necromancer and then the Necromancer himself. The very first thing she sees it. The man conquers the kingdom and is making sure everyone understand what this means.
Kitty didn´t manage to leave as the Necromancer himself saw her running away. Somehow, this does make the man curious and send one of his students to go after her. No success for such student.
The boy returns smiling and saying he wants to change profession. A florist seems such a nice option of sudden.
"Brainwash?" Kurt asked now impressed letting the boy start his new path.
___________________________ #Second Encounter
Kurt is drinking beer in a bar. Actually, his bar, as once conquering this village everything here belongs to him. The man is too tired, not even have the mind to flirt with the lovely ladies. Tonight he wants to sleep.
The bar is also a small hotel, Kurt can pinpoint the troubles of decoration later(Fake Javali´s head, so cliche). His room is 33, however, the man has the need to go to the 32.
"Hi?" he asked confused. Why does he want to go to this room? A woman´s voice, tired just like him, answer with heavy sleep "go away, I´m tired" Kurt should leave and go to his room, except...for some reason, the man ended up staying there. Sleeping in such a bizarre position.
Don´t leave this Place.
As the morning arrives, like always, Kurt wakes up to see a woman with blue lipstick and surprised eyes on her face. Kurt suddenly forgets to be cranky as this is his routine.
"Hi, my name is Kurt, who are you?"
"I´m...Kitty Pryde" she speaks trying to not reveal much, something(someone) is trying to force her to speak the curse words. "And I´ve to go" those words are hard to utter. "You never saw me!"
She replied quickly now running from him.
"Who are you?"
___________________ #Third Encounter Kitty´s new student is certainly someone who enjoys to date, no shame in that, but lately, Kitty has to notice her student has a type for dark mages. One day, her student announces she is dating this really cute boy that also learns necromancy. Steve is his name and he´s the best student from the evil necromancer.
Kitty´s jaw drops at this.
"It was magical, I just wake up with the need of going to Clayville, I know is very far away, and then I meet him...he said ''for some reason, I was expecting you, me and my master'' is how soulmate´s work?"
"Yes, just like that"
Kurt shows up, confused as to why he was waiting too. Steve waves to Kitty´s student and both start dating, a nice walk in the garden. Kitty and Kurt have to chaperone the date and it was strange.
"Who are you? Why we always keep meeting?" Kurt asked confused but deep down he has an idea for this.
"I´m your soulmate and you´re the evilest Necromancer I´ve to know" Kitty replied knowing HIM won, like always, there´s no energy to defeat him.
"You don´t sound happy about it" Kurt stated.
"No, I mean, I don´t know how to feel, you´re evil and likes to do evil things, on the other hand, we´re older than dirt...morality still applies to us?"
"I don´t think so, then again, we may as well be an exception for mankind´s rule" then he gazes at her "it was hypocritical of you to judge me...yes, you are always running away from me even though you kill as much as I do."
"I..." she tries to deny and maybe in the past, she would speak something against such claims. She´s older than, much older "Yeah, I did kill people, for many reasons"
"I know, so, how this soulmate thing works?"
"I...don´t know" seems silly to admit this now, back in the day, Kitty was sure if she even gazes at him everything would drastically change.
____________________ Bonus
"So...you use to brainwash and take a bit of their free will?" asked Zaorva drinking their equivalent of coffee.
"Yes, she is stubborn, just like you and he´s a terrible detective...I had to spell out to him" The Crawling God of Chaos replied bemusedly "either way, now they are together. Thanks to me"
"That´s right, you´re a terrifying version of Cupid"
"I know"
#soulmate au#pushing daisies au#kurt wagner#kurtty#evil wizard Kurt#lovecraft Kurt as cupid#now cupid is scary#zaorva is not minding to much#kitty pryde#well in a way she did kill as much as Kurt so she not liking him for that is a bit hypocrital on her part#second version of this#not my best version#but it has a soulmate au#and soul reading how are they doing this? ask Zaorva

How To Design Your Own Happy by Renee Pedro of @crashpaddesigns
by Renee Pedro | Featured Contributor
Are you happy? That shouldn’t be hard to answer, but for some of us of it is. Many of us measure our happiness based on outside factors. where we are getting it wrong. Our distorted views of happiness are influenced by what society says happiness is.
This isn’t new. It’s the story of” Keeping up with the Joneses.” A comic strip created by Arthur R. Momand in 1916. It was about the McGinis family and their struggle to keep up with their neighbors the Joneses. Today the Joneses are not only the people across the street. They are your friends and the friends of your friends in your social media news feed. Why are we wasting our lives comparing ourselves to other people? I know women are especially guilty of this. We compare ourselves to other women all the time. How are you ever going to keep up with those countless images of “Perfection” in your Instagram feed? Why do you want to?
When you scroll by a picture of a friend in her perfect living room, with her perfectly coifed toddlers, do you think, darn why can’t we take a family photo like that? What you don’t know is, on her dining room table are stacks of clean laundry, that she hasn’t put away yet. Or that two minutes before the photo the toddlers were covered in chocolate. She’s not Mrs. Jones, either. Like you, she’s trying to keep up. I’m not saying I want to see everyone’s dirty laundry in my social media feed. I just want more people to be real. I “ll go first. There’s an overflowing laundry basket in my bedroom, there are dishes in the sink, dust bunnies in the dining room, and my desk is a mess. There that feels better. I’ll let you in on a secret, perfection doesn’t exist, despite what Instagram tells you.
A long time ago, I made a decision not to be Mrs. McGinis anymore. I don’t want to keep up with Joneses. When I was comparing myself to other people, I wasn’t appreciating who I am and what I have. This is a self-defeating habit. Once we stop striving for an Instagram worthy life we can have a really happy life. On your own terms. Teddy Roosevelt, said “Comparison is the thief of joy”
Once you realize you don’t have to be better than she is. Nor do you have to be thinner, taller, smarter or richer. You can start being happy. If you are being who you want to be, how can anyone tell you, you’re doing it wrong. The only thing you have to be is your best you. To be comfortable in your own skin means being happy to let people know who you really are. I spent my twenties believing that life was a competition, it’s not. There’s no finish line and there is no finite amount of success, money or happiness. There is enough to go around. When it comes to happiness, one size doesn’t fit all. Your happy isn’t the same as my happy. Happiness is personal, and you have to design YOUR happy.
Have you ever heard anyone say, “She marches to the beat of her own drum”? It’s not usually meant as a compliment. When someone says that, people hear, she’s quirky, she doesn’t quite fit in, she likes to do things her own way. It should be a compliment, because being you, and living life on your own terms is tremendous. If you’re an entrepreneur and you’re building your brand you need to march to the beat of your own drum. You’ll never have great happiness living by someone else’s standards. You didn’t start your business to do the same things the same way they have always been done. Why bother?
(aybollads=window.aybollads||[]).push(id:"91015553-3");
The first step should be to figure out what your happiness looks like. With all the challenges of running your own business, you should at least be doing it in a way that makes you happy? Everything about your business should reflect who you are and your personality. A few months ago I reconnected with a friend I hadn’t talk to in over fifteen years. We were very close in our twenties, then she moved back to the west coast and after a few years, we lost contact. She searched for me online and found my business Crash Pad Designs. She emailed me and said, “Pedro,(she’s always called me by my last name) as soon as I saw your website I knew it was you.” I was very happy to hear from my old friend. I was also happy and proud, to hear that my business was a reflection of my personality. What a compliment, I was marching to the beat of my own drum.
Here’s a question. What comes first success or happiness?
Every business owner wants to be successful, but if you’re not happy are you really successful? If you’ve already made the decision to be your own boss, don’t hold back now. Whatever your business, you can, of course, find inspiration from other people. Inspiration is awesome but, imitating someone else is stressful and unfulfilling. Running your own business is hard enough, no need to make it harder. So take that inspiration and do it your way. Then one day someone will find inspiration in you.
The moral of the comic strip was, the McGinnis family could never keep up with the Jones. Even back in 1916, the goal post was always moving. Trying to live a life based on other people’s standards of success and happiness, means you will always be chasing a moving goal post.
I am still active on social media and I still count how many people like my post. But I am not chasing that moving goal post. I have dirty clothes on the floor, dust bunnies, and my favorite jeans are getting tight, but I’m really happy.
So what does your happy look like?
I’m Renee Pedro, Owner /Creative Director of Crash Pad Designs a made in America modern home textiles company in Philadelphia, PA. I am a self taught textile designer and entrepreneur. It all started because of a vintage stove, I had been house hunting for a year and had seen over 100 houses. I was worried I’d never find my perfect house. At that time, I worked nights and slept until noon except on Wednesdays. Wednesdays my friend who was my realtor, picked me up at 9am, before we spoke a word to each other I had to have a sip of the 16 oz black coffee she bought for me. One Wednesday morning we entered a house through the kitchen door. First thing I saw was a beautiful yellow & white 1963 Philco electric stove. Because of that stove I bought that house, and started my business. I didn’t know anything about designing fabric, starting a business, or running a business. The one thing I knew was, “I could figure it out”, and I did. Seven years later , I still say to myself at least 4 times a day, “I’ll figure it out”and I usually do. Emotions, Support and Work
The past few years have taught me a tremendous amount about my personal strength, limitations, and boundaries. At this moment, I am grateful, humbled, overwhelmed, and lucky as hell to be the mom of a beautiful, healthy 7 month old baby boy! He fills every day with giggles and so so much love. My life feels balanced, my heart is full. But like many couples, my husband and I faced an emotionally challenging set of trials and tribulations on our path to get here.I wanted to document the toll it took on me before I forget entirely.
I'm not going to talk about our fertility journey, but what I do want to talk about is the emotional impact all of this can have on a person. Or at least, what it had on me – and I know others who are going through or have gone through similar silent struggles while trying to put on a brave face in their day-to-day. Here's some of what I personally experienced...
Loss of Focus
You know in the movies when a character is having an emotional breakdown and they do the slow fade-out of their surroundings and you hear a ringing or static steadily take over? Well, now I know that's a real thing because I experienced it. I distincly remember this moment at work during one of the particularly emotionally challenging weeks in our journey to a baby. I was late for a meeting, just standing (hiding really) in the office stairwell trying to make everything come back into focus so that I could go back in. It felt like the world around me was peeling back away from me and I was just falling into a void. I've never experienced anything like it before or since. It was surreal.
Struggle for Motivation
When I was at work, I didn't want to be there. Normally an over-achiever and passionate worker, I had to literally drag myself out of bed, chug coffee, and absolutely everything felt forced. My performance might not have suffered, but I did.
Hiding
I felt like I had to hide what was really going on in my life, who I really was, and "keep on keeping on". Nobody made me do this, I'm saying this is what society told me I should do. The right thing to do was to pretend like nothing was wrong and just do the presentation, run the meeting. No one wants to or needs to know about my personal life, that's personal. I remember telling my husband that I've never felt more disingenuine in my life.
Realizing what Matters
One of the most positive outcomes from those emotionally trying years was that I became very clear on what matters most in life. For me, that's love and family. Period. A career should never infringe on that. It was the point when I realized this for the first time, and ever since I have approached things much much differently. Namely, a job is a job. I do my job the best I can, and then I go the heck home and LIVE. I will always remember the majority of my 20's as a blur of my career and not a whole lot else. I'm proud of the accomplishments sprinkled in there. But I truly hope that it's the only time in my life I will say that for.
If you're like I am now, and don't think of your career as "everything", then here is my advice:
Find a personal support network that shares your values (i.e. don't surround yourself with workaholics, they will suck you back in!)
Find a team of colleagues who also share your values regarding family. And no - you cannot learn this from their corporate website, absolutely every company touts a work-life balance but it's a facade. Try to get inside information if you can.
Be honest with yourself about what you're going through emotionally and what you can reasonably handle at work in terms of stress/responsibility. If you're in a stressful situation at work or have a mound of responsibilities on your plate, it might be a good time to take a step back or take a break. How you do that depends on the situation, and on your company's culture, but if you don't act, you'll probably end up hiding in the stairway while the world peels away in slow motion.
I think what I hated the most was feeling so fake. There were days I smiled and laughed through my workday, then got in the car and cried the whole way home. Flooded by the emotions I had stuffed away all day. I wish I hadn't been so afraid of appearing weak. Going through this journey has made me more self-aware. I now know my limitations, where to draw boundaries, and what matters the most to me. If anything, I think that makes me strong.
