Hi! I am rather new to modding Oblivion and I was wondering if there is any mods you would recommend for it? Or maybe just your mod list, if you are comfortable with sharing that? Your Oblivion characters always look so beautiful, especially Iriana. Anyway, I hope you having a wonderful day! :)
It’s ironic you ask Nonnie, considering I’m wrestling with Oblivion myself and failing atm XD
Still, I’m happy to drop some recommendations for mods I use and can usually get to cooperate with me ^-^
First off, you’ll want the Official Oblivion Patch, the Unofficial Oblivion Patch, the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch, and the Unofficial Oblivion DLC Patches (if you have the GOTY edition). They fix a bunch of issues in the game, and some mods require them to be installed, so they’re a solid place to start.
The rest are under the cut because boy this got long o.o
Character Creation:
I cannot recommend Nuska’s Oblivion Character Overhaul enough. It’s an absolute must have for me as it deals with Oblivion’s potato faces beautifully. And, thanks to the hard work of other modders, it is possible to customise OCO further. I’ll list those in just a second. You’ll also need the Oblivion Script Extender and Blockhead to get it to work.
I also use the HGEC Female Body for my OCs - if you use that mod or any other body mods, there are some additional files provided by Nuska that make OCO compatible with them. They’re located in the optional files for OCO, and the description for those will tell you what order you need to install them in.
Now, my other OCO Mods that I recommend:
Orsimer Overhaul for OCOv2 - merges OCO and Orsimer Overhaul for a look I personally love for orc characters. It can be a little hit and miss with getting it to work on my end, so you’ll need to decide if you want to have a go at wrestling with it, but I personally think it’s worth a try
OCOv2 Martin and Adoring Fan Fix - I’m not a huge fan of OCO’s take on Martin, so I prefer this one even though it makes him look a bit too young imo
Unique Face Features for OCOv2 - Adds some warpaints, scars, freckles, and other kinds of face markings to the cc. iirc they’re tweaked with the age slider
Warpaint for OCOv2 - adds some more Skyrim warpaints
Seamless for OCOv2 - removes the very visible neckseam on characters. Whether or not I can get this one to work is usually hit and miss for me ^^”
New Brows for OCOv2 - exactly what it says on the tin ;)
New Eyes for OCOv2 - new eye texture replacements, along with some optional files to customise them a little
Better Necks for OCOv2 - adds some detailing to the neck and throat of the character model. Not a requirement ofc, I’m just a sucker for detail
OCOv2 Male Beard - adds some actual beards to the cc
Hairstyle mods can vary in quality, and some only come available as wigs. I only use a couple myself.
Sidenote, wigs tend to make your characters look like they have no ears so you’ll need a mod that adds equip-able ears - I’ll have one recommended further down.
ANiceOakTree’s Hairstyles for Oblivion is a mod that adds hairs as wigs. There’s a few styles in different colours, and it’s the one I use for Iriana. You create your character with whatever hair, it doesn’t matter, and then travel to either Vilverin, which is the Ayleid Ruin literally opposite the Sewer Exit after you finish the tutorial, or in the Cheydinhal Chapel near the doors.I usually tend to go to Vilverin, as it’s closer for me and the chest is literally down the stairs from the entrance, plus it counts as stealing from the chapel so I’d recommend the ruin if you’d rather not get in trouble for wanting nice hair.
Zinni_s Braided Redguard Expanded is good if you plan to play as a Redguard and would like a braided style. It’s added to the cc, so you don’t need to go looking for it ^^
Chakaru Wigs 2.0 is a bit trickier. You need to access the Testing Hall in order to find them, and I can’t remember exactly which room they’re in. They’re located in a chest directly opposite the door, however, so it narrows the search a little. If I get to the point where Oblivion is cooperating with me, I’ll add the location here.In order to access the Testing Hall, open the console and type ‘coc testing hall’ (if that doesn’t work try removing the space between testing and hall, I forget which is the correct way), and then in the centre of the main room, find the door labelled Hawkhaven, go through it, and fast travel to return to Cyrodiil.
I’ve not used the Cazy Hair Pack in some time now, but it’s still worth a mention. It adds some new hairs to the cc, so no looking around ruins and testing halls to find them ^^
Armour and Clothing
Ordinarily I would never download Apachii Goddess Store, but it is where I get Iriana’s ears. On the ground floor, there’s a container full of equip-able ears you can take free of charge, and iirc they match to your character’s skintone.
Belphe’s Travelling Gear (the female version) is another mod I wouldn’t usually use, but it looks surprisingly good on Iriana sooooo. There’s a few mods on this page you can try out if you’re interested, but I have no idea how to install the ones without esp files, so I can’t help you if you want any of those.
This is my favourite remodel of the Archmage Robes (I could do without the titty physics, but it’s very unnoticeable most of the time so it’s survivable). Because of the unfortunate physics aspect, it does require Coronerras Maxiumum Compatibility Skeleton, but otherwise it’s a brilliant remodel. However, the Archmage Robes present a problem with equip-able ears - as they take up an amulet slot and these robes don’t let amulets show, you will have missing ears with these robes. There’s another mod I use to fix this, which I’ll get to late.
Alternatively, there is a male replacer for the Archmage Robes that I like but (obviously) have never used if you’re making male characters
The Triss Armour Retexture is another great mod, and I personally like to use the Dark Brotherhood variant for my DBH characters as opposed to actual Shrouded Armour. They can be a pain to obtain as you need to fight your way through some bandits in Fort Cedrian, then locate the bag in the Mausoleum, but they are worth the trouble.
Assorted Protective Female Armours is another must imo as it fixes the ridiculous boobplates and some textures for some of the game’s heavy armours.
If you used the HGEC Body for female characters, then you’ll want to grab the Vanilla Amulets Fix for HGEC as it’ll fix how amulets fit on that body.
Spike4072s Female Sheogorath Regalia is a great mod if you’d rather keep the iconic Sheogorath look on a female character rather than have it swapped out for a dress.
Shrouded Armour Cowl is another great mod for DBH characters; I use it with the Dark Brotherhood Triss Armour, seeing as the hood doesn’t really mix with it.
Sinblood_SonjaArmourTweaked is another good female armour mod; it looks good, and is reasonably functionable.
Other Mods
Oblivion Reloaded is a fantastic mod; primarily it’s a graphics extender mod, and it really does make the world of Oblivion look amazing.
Alternative Start is a great mod, and it functions very much like its Skyrim counterpart. If you want to do the Main Quest but start elsewhere, after a certain number of days pass you’ll receive a message to meet someone in a set period of time at the Temple of the One. That will put you in the tutorial and set up the Main Quest. Word of warning, miss that meeting and I don’t think it’s possible to do the Main Quest at all so just be careful.
Oblivion XP is an absolute must if you struggle with Oblivion’s levelling system like I do. XP is awarded for defeating foes, discovering locations, completing quests, stealing things, etc. It’s installed with Oblivion Mod Manager, so make sure you grab that.
Kvatch Rebuilt is a pretty damn good mod which offers a questline to rebuild the city of Kvatch and give it a ruler. That ruler can even be the player, depending on some choices you make. The voice acting isn’t stellar, but it’s worth it to see Kvatch restored.It requires the Engine Bugs Fixes so make sure to grab that.Also, make sure you pick up Compatibility Patches for OCO to avoid too many weird faces around Kvatch and other places.
Reneers Guard Overhaul is also a pretty useful mod if the ever-charming behaviour of the Oblivion Guards gets a bit wearing. They’ll no longer chase you to the ends of Tamriel, and a crime committed in Cheydinhal won’t get you attacked in Leyawiin (kinda like how Skyrim manages crime).
No Anachronistic Main Quest Comments is good for immersion; you won’t have people saying how a city might not go the way of Kvatch after the Oblivion Crisis is over.
Now, the amulet issue with the Archmage Robes. I fixed that with the Summonable Private Quarters, which provides a station where you can mess with slots for armour/clothing sets. There’s lots of use for this mod besides just making your amulets and ears visible, but this is what I primarily use it for.To make it work you need the Core files of Cobl, so manually download that and move the core folder into Oblivion’s Data folder.
I also use a couple of animation mods, namely Staff Animation which changes the PC’s idles and the way they move when holding a staff so it looks less awkward.
There’s also the Heroic Female Idle Replacer which is less stiff than the vanilla female idle. Otherwise I recommend searching through the Oblivion Nexus’ animation tag and finding any mods that suit you and your characters best.
Project Oblivion Gate Destruction Spell is useful if you get tired of diving into gates over and over again when you just want to get on with the game. Just cast the spell and poof, no more gate and you still get the Sigil Stone. It’s good for when you’ve already played the game over a few times.
The Elder Scrolls Online Imports is a must have if you love ESO like I do. It adds some bits of lore, creatures, and locations from ESO.
Better Cities makes the cities of Cyrodiil more varied and interesting, though it might be a bit troublesome at times. I’ve had the occasional problem with this mod, purely based on load order so just keep that in mind. Otherwise it’s a gorgeous mod with a lot of effort and creativity put into it.
Vanilla Staff Replacer isn’t necessary if you’re not playing a mage, but I really enjoy it personally ^^
I’m going to add Black Horse Colour Overhaul because it honestly bugs me that the black horses in Oblivion aren’t black
Companion Vilja is a mod I haven’t actually used yet, but I’ve got installed for this playthrough because I’ve been meaning to play it forever. Apparently Terry Pratchett himself contributed to this mod, so that should speak for its quality.
I hope this was helpful to you Nonnie, and good luck with modding Oblivion ^^

It’s been a while, but I’m finally gonna try and catch up!
It’s been a while, so before I start, I’d just like to say:
And an incredibly belated Merry Christmas to everyone :P
So...on with the answers! :D

@plummiesims asked:
I'm gonna be 100% honest I just found ur blog bc sssvitlans re-blogged ur Altus facial hair and I SCREAMED. I love Dorian Pavus So Much :") thank u im probably gonna add it to my game adhsbd;;;
[R]: Ha, thanks :P Stuff like this makes my day XD

Anonymous asked:
Will you be updating the male sims clothing override for the new expansions and dlc? The EA version is trash.
[R]: I’ll try my best when I can :) They are trash but unfortunately, the method I’m using to override them just isn’t working as well on newer meshes :(
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
Would the drowned out skinblend be compatible with lumia's vanilla skin or are you planning on making another one?
[R]: It should work with it. I use it over his default replacement skins and they work very well!
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
Hi, can you do a female kinky tapered cut type style? both short and sorta high?
[R]: It all really just depends on what I’m wanting to do really, unfortunately :P I’m more leaned to making male based cc, so it really just depends on what I’m feeling. I can never give anyone a straight answer [no pun intended XD], unless I was already thinking of doing it :o
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
Can you do a higher version of the vindicator?
[R]: It’s an easy enough ask. I could probably lump it in with some other hairs I’m thinking of giving variations ;)
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
Hii my brother loves your content sooo much :) thank youu
[R]: I’m glad he does! Thanks so much for the message! :DD
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
Where did you go?
[R]: In to the deep and dark shadows of Real Life XD. I went through somethings, had a couple of jobs and am still looking for one tbh. Played a lot of other games and did some other things. Basically just trying to re-focus my life and sort things out. Other would say that I’m “trying to be an adult” XD
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
Wait, is your sims really a man or bear or are you a man (not to offend)
[R]: They can be anything you want’em to be XD
__________________________________________________
@rocknrollvampire asked:
Hello! I'm a SIMS 4 player (obviously) from France. First, thanx for your amazing CC. I would like to know what poses packages and overlays you use with the sims "modeling" for your CC. Thanx for your answer.
[R]: First of all, thank you! Second, most of them were from @vanderetro and a handful of others I can’t quite remember. A lot of the ones I use now tend to be my own custom made poses however.

@jonysimmer asked:
Hello, first of all your CC is incredible. Question: Are you planning to do the roll-up version of Ryder's henley?
[R]: I’ve been thinking about doing that, just never got around to it. It’s definitely something I’d plan on doing in the future :)

Anonymous asked:
Your smooth as fuck v1 hair looks super weird when I zoom out from my sim. It flattens out on the sim's head and looks very strange.
[R]: My earlier did’nt have the complete set of LODs that my newer hairs tend to have. Chances are, when you zoom out, you’re seeing the EA hair I used as an import base in S4Studio :P
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
hi! your sim derrick are amazing omg omg, can you share him please? thank you! keep going!
[R]: Yeah, of course! I’m definitely gonna be sharing him at some point. :P
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
Is Just outta bed hair bgc?
[R]: I’m probably a little late to respond, but yes, to re-affirm to everyone, it is BGC. In actual-fact, most, if not all the hairs that I’ve released are BGC ;)

@aeonpixels asked:
Hey XLD ^-^ can you imagine to convert also may the long white gown from Mass Effect 3? "Liara Ashley, Liara and Miranda in Dress, from Mass Effect 3 Citadel DLC by nach77 who has an image on his deviantart. If I could I would try it myself but I dunno how to extract such stuff from other games as a bloody noob.. Just started... =) Since you are experienced in that, I thought I would ask... may there is hope for some female clothes from ME, LOL Thanks a bunch for your coversions and creation ;)
[R]: Probs, at some point. Just depends on where I’m at and where my motivations lie! :)
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
Hi. Are you gonna possibly upload ME:A sims as well in the future? I cannot wait, because your work is so perfect. Thank you.
[R]: Yeap, this ask would’ve been from a while back, but I do have post showing the order they’ll be released (including some of my anticipated ME:OT character recreations ;))
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
Do you think that you could make a flattop haircut?
[R]: I’ve actually been trying to figure out how to execute this for a while. I feel like someone’s probably done it before though, but I’ll keep trying :P
__________________________________________________
@catewithak asked:
Have you ever considered making more MM Dragon Age hairs? Either gender? I love your Altus, and I also hate alpha texture, but that seems to be the only Dragon Age hair CC I can find!
[R]: Yeah, any bioware-based hairs (*in maxis match*) are usually a rarity. I’ll definitely be trying to fill the void of MM DA hairs where and when I can :)

@mqsnail asked:
Hi Xld, huge lover of all your cc (i can't tell you how grateful i am for male clothe and hair cc. I had a question about one of your hairs, i've been noticing that the procrastinator hair would make certain parts of my sim's head shine as if he had some specs. The shine is noticeable in game and when moving household.
[R]: It’s been a persistent issue for a while, and I’ve unfortunately never been able to pinpoint where it’s coming from. I’ve fixed the spec-maps before on my own files, but to no avail. Unfortunately I can’t provide a fix :( I usually don’t mind it too much at this point since it’s not always that visible.

@puzzlebot asked:
I'm so sorry to bother you but i've been trying for ages to get a mesh into a full body costume like you did with garrus, but i just can't find any kind of resources that could help me out and even though i'm familiar with blender i'm running into so many hiccups! is there any chance you could point me in the right direction e.g a tutorial that you would personally recommend ?
[R]: Unfortunately I don’t have any tutorials I use (most of my endeavors have been purely trial and error). Just look up some general stuff about blender features and get to know what they do. The main thing to do for getting a mesh into a full body ts4 costume is to append the model to the full body costume mesh file, delete the meshes in the LODs containing it and joining the mesh you want to said LODs --> then import to S4S and enjoy :D

Anonymous asked:
ngl i check your blog weekly to see if you've posted liam kosta. i'm so eager to have him in my game lol
[R]: I’m still trying to sort out his hair which is a bit twitchy with the way I made it :P Until that’s done, there’s not going to be a Liam Kosta release :/
__________________________________________________
@adamleeds1989 asked:
I hope this question isn't disrespectful, but how do you usually create your male sims? Thank you very much and hope you have a nice day!
[R]: No disrepect at all! I look around...the internet. Sometimes I just make one until I like what I see. A lot of the time, I’m just messing with other male sims I’ve already made as bases. No formula, no rules, just kinda do what I want :P
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
Hey, I really really love your Garrus Sims version and I'd love to have him in my game, but unfortunately I don't own outdoor retreat. I was just wondering if you ever got around to making him base game friendly. Sorry if this has been asked before.
[R]: My main issue is finding a full base-game costume to place him in to make him BGC. There probably are ones now, but I just haven’t had the time to sift through the files :o
__________________________________________________
@oceanmangetsthisbread asked:
Will you link your tali suit soon?
[R]: Tali is a special, special mesh...that won’t cooperate. She still doesn’t have hands atm, so probably not for a while :(

@applecat90 asked:
Hi! I just fell in love with your male sims. Love your work! I tried to recreate them in my TS4, but they look slightly different than your original sims. I checked the cc list, and even used Tray Importer to know which cc items I needed, but I couldn't make it. I couldn't find proper Upperbody cc(which is used in almost every sims you made, id is 892D886D8DC9550E) and skindetailcreasemouth cc(I think this one is replaced by your DrownedOut skin overlay for later sims) and default skin.
'cause I have complete cc list for one of your sims, Kenney, but still he looks slightly different in tones of face and body(I tried Luumia's smoothish 1,2 DR, vanilla), Hiroki's betterbody). Would you please share the information about which default skin replacement & upperbody did you use to make these sims? Thank you! and thank you for your amazing works.
[R]: Doesn’t seem like they’re anything crucial? Usually the only things that really make my sims different is the skin overlay, and using Drowned Out usually makes the difference. I’d have to give this some thought. It’s possible that the upper body mods have to do with the muscle slider I used? Other than that, there wasn’t all that much else to them :/

@jdowellc asked:
Hey, I'm not sure if you monitor or update anything still, but I'm a huge fan of the Major hair in particular. I was just wondering if you knew that the Major 2 isn't hat compatible? At least not in my game anyway - newest update. The whole back of the hair disappears when a hat is used which makes them look bald. Just a heads-up I guess (I'm not expecting anything) :)
[R]: Honestly my bad! It’s probably something I forgot to add since I may have posted the file the way it was (’cause I never actually intended on releasing the Major 2 in the first place :P). I’ll try get that rectified when I can.

@prixetoilesims asked:
Thanks to you, I’ve added Garrus and my Shepard to the sims and now I’m looking for a way to make baby Asari and I blame you 100% for feeding my mass effect addiction SO THANKS NO BUT SRSLY THANK YOU ♥️♥️
[R]: Thanks ♥️♥️ ♥️♥️ XDD I’m feeding my own addiction too, probably worse on my end letting it consume me, but I’m glad other can feed their own addictions as well XD

Anonymous asked:
Hey I love your content! I always come back to check to see if you upload anything new! XD Willing to donate :) I had a question on how to download your good looking sims? Do you download/install them just like Mods?
[R]: You pretty much extra them for the zips and into your tray files :D That easy! And thanks so much! I’ll definitely try to make an effort when I have time to release some more content. Already got some hairs I could probably drop soon :)

Finally you resurrected.
[R]: Not quite, but you better believe I’m getting there.

@eggysimblr asked:
Hi, I just Recently discovered Mass Effect (Finished 1 and soon finishing 2), And I was wondering, will you make some Quarian CC? You know, because Tali'Zorah is my girl...
[R]: Tali’s if friggin’ amazing. I know @bmso85sims‘s been making a few bits of quarian and misc mass effect content as well so I’d check them out. I’ve been struggling myself with converting Quarian content, so it’d be a while before I release anything, let alone Tali unfortunately XD

@theprodigalbanana asked:
Hi, I just wanted to thank you again for getting me into the series and for the ME sims , especially John and Kaidan. I'm going to play these two to fill the void that ME left in my heart. They are so sweet together and your short stories encapsulates that perfectly. I couldn't access some of them so I was wondering if they are a WIP. I was also wondering if sth bad would happen if I install John and Kaidan as it says that they are outdated. I love your work and thanks for getting me into ME :D
[R]: Don’t worry, I’ve been filling that same void for years XD And no, nothing bad’ll happen, it’s just that I have newer edits of them these days (and I there’s always something about them that needs tweaking). I’m also secretly an advocate for Bioware [jk, but still XD].

@metalfenix asked:
I'm glad you're fine, xalder. Take it easy and concentrate on your job quest. (Even though I would be a liar if I say I didn't wanted to ask you about the suspenders lol).
[R]: I know right, me and those goddamn suspenders? I might as well release them as is honestly. I’ve been okay with how they look for ages, but quite frankly, they’re a bit hit and miss -- but if you seem to be good with them, there’s no reason why I can’t release them :P

Anonymous asked:
Hello I was wondering if I can have the tray files to two of your goodlooking Sims please? :)
[R]: Any sims specifically being requested? ;P

@shinyobservationhottub asked:
Im having a visual glitch with the Scimitar hair. It looks like light streaks peering through the head when zoomed out at a certain distance. The hair looks amazing so I still want to use it, but wanted to come drop this by.
[R]: Those are some strange and rather elusive specularish[?] issues that don’t actually seem to be on the specular maps in the hairs. I still don’t have a clue how to fix it, and it personally hasn’t bothered me too much so I’ve kinda just grown to live and let live (y’know, until there’s some fix for it :P)

Anonymous asked:
Hey, when will you upload tali's suit?
[R]: May be, sometime...when her hands aren’t totally screwed up :P

@volundrromu asked:
Hi!I really liked your character - Tali'zorah. Can I download it?
[R]: Now this is honestly such a popular question! Please refer to the above ask. :P

Hi there, I was just wondering if you were going to put the kaidan's email mod back up? thank you!
[R]: I’m going to be bumping this up in priority to upload, don’t worry :P I haven’t actually released it at all yet, since the original files are on my laptop that I used to game on. Will be tweaking the files for both male and gender-neutral references in the message so no one gets left out :P

Anonymous asked:
Can you make a female version of your loin cloth that you currently have for male sims?
[R]: An easy enough ask too :P Just depends on where my priorities lie, but it’s definitely something I could put on my to-do list. I think @quiddity-jones might have made a conversion of it -- I could probably get her to upload it :)
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
Can you reupload the male loincloth files?
[R]: Yes! It’s a goddamn crime that tumblr removed it.

@heyisfurwhoresez asked:
Please repost the oiled up skin overlay!
[R]: I’m definitely making that a priority!

Does Garrus still require Outdoor Retreat?
[R]: Unfortunately, at the moment, yes :(

@limefiend asked:
Were your overlays wiped out with the nsfw ban? do you still have them up somewhere else, or are they like gone? post/139654327414, post/149505614209, and post/155480567079 are mia now.
[R]: Looks like there’s a good 10-20% of my original posts (not just CC) that got wiped out in the stupid-ass nsfw ban. I’ll definitely get to reposting them soon and rewiring the download links. They’re still on simfileshare, I’ll just need to be making the necessary fixes for the links. :)
__________________________________________________
@cejeubeu asked:
Hi there. I just came across your tumblr today and saw some of your uploaded sims. I've downloaded them, but I wanted to send some potential suggestions, primarily one: could you upload the CC in a ZIP containing the tray files for the sim? I've seen a few uploaders do this and it's not only convenient but it's much better than linking the sources, since often times the source can move to a different page or the link given simply may not work anymore, as if the case for some of your pages linked
[R]: For my mass effect sims, the content is usually separated so users can dl the bits they want. Other sims I’ve uploaded usually don’t have a lot of CC associated with them, and are usually the same bits I use across the board, so you only need to download them once from any of the links of my releases. Plus breaking up the downloads into smaller files is easier on my near-dial-up-ass adsl internet speeds (I don’t get fiber where I am since our local district council isn’t looking to update our zone until the mid 2020s).

@jonysimmer asked:
Hi, are you planning to do the pants that everybody uses in ME Andromeda? Because I converted it but... looks weird. BTW: I love your Tumblr!!
[R]: I’ve been trying to make the textures for it, so I’ll definitely be working on it on the side. It was one of the things setting me back from releasing my Andromeda sims. Also, thanks XDD

Anonymous asked:
Hey there, I wanted to download the Dorian's moustache cc but it's removed, was wondering if you could reupload it or something. Please & Thank You
[R]: I don’t even know how that was explicit content, there was literally just a picture of his face XD Tumblr pls. I’ll get the links up as soon as I can :)
__________________________________________________
Anonymous asked:
Can you please post an updated download for the all oiled up overlay? It disappeared from my game a few days ago and I truly miss it as I'm sure others do as well. <3
[R]: My game’s not quite up-to-date so I don’t know what exactly the problem is so I’ll definitely have to look into it. Most updates shouldn’t be breaking something

Anonymous asked:
The URL’s no longer work for the misc skin overlays ☹️
[R]: Thanks to tumblr’s tyrannical nsfw purge, I’m gonna have to repost, so they’ll be up soon again, dw :)

Interview with Tay’s Fuwanovel: (ExtraMana Archives)
I interviewed Tay of fuwanovel to ask about his thoughts on visual novels, the community, piracy, distribution, and the possible future of the medium. Fuwanovel is a fan translated visual novel repository website.
How did you get into visual novels?
I think I was “hooked” by visual novels for a few different reasons, but mostly because they were therapeutic and helped me parse out my depression. The most nefarious part of depression in my experience is that you tend not to recognise it in yourself until you’re about to bottom-out (that’s why supportive friends, loved ones, or significant others keeping an eye on you is so important). That’s pretty much what happened to me. I booted up Katawa Shoujo, and pretty soon I was feeling some levity and happiness, and I realised – all at once — I had been really, really “down” for weeks. I remember leaning back in my chair and saying out loud, “I think I’m depressed. Huh.” Visual novels didn’t cure my depression, but they were therapeutic and helped me parse out my emotions.
How did you get first get involved with the community of VN fans and what made you decide to build Fuwanovel?
Katawa Shoujo was a fascinating, weird, and awesome experience and I wanted to find more games like it. I signed up for a handful of VN communities and tried to get some help in understanding the hobby’s landscape … and I was amazed and surprised by how negative and rude people were to me just because I was new. I was asking questions like, “Hey, I just tried Katawa Shoujo and loved it. What other games can I try that are similar?” and getting responses like, “Katawa Shoujo is the worst thing to happen to eroge. Now we have a bunch of idiots and weebs running around needing their a#& wiped”. I couldn’t believe how rude and toxic a lot of people were. I found a few, decent friends who helped me learn the hobby, but I decided I was going to shop around until I found a community that was actually welcoming. I knew about Fuwanovel (a lot of people were talking about it around that time), and one day I decided to stop in and take a look around. Fuwa was a small, and very welcoming group, and the zeitgeist was “break away from the negativity and build a positive home for VNs on the net”. It was exactly what I wanted, and since it was re-building I knew I had a chance to contribute and maintain that same mentality.
How do you feel the medium is perceived?
As far as outside gamers go, I think Visual Novels are misunderstood just as often as they are misrepresented. A lot of “outsider” gamers see them as “porn/hentai games” or “dating sims”, and are intrinsically suspicious or put-off by the anime art styles. But. I think the trend is changing thanks to the rise of talented Western devs and the transition of games onto Steam. I see outside opinion slowly moving from “porn games” to “intriguing oddities”, and I just hope the VN community can work together to push that rebranding even further in a positive direction. Within the hobby, it’s a little harder to say. We’re a diverse bunch. I think there’s a lot of cautious optimism as VNs make their way onto Steam (especially if an 18+ patch is offered separately by the dev, which matters a lot to purists). Sekai has made a big splash in the zeitgeist, but I think all the big companies have contributed meaningfully to a sense of momentum. Take, for example, the aggressive release calendars of “the big three” over the next 18 months. For all the cynicism you find in VN circles, a lot of people are sitting up and taking notice.
What upcoming VNs are you most excited about (translated Japanese & Western)?
Western VNs: I’m going to be following and playing all the NaNoRenO games (I really wish I could participate, but I’ve got a little too much on my plate atm). If you don’t know what that is, google it or head over to Lemma for more info. Translations: Fuwa publishes a TL update every week (thanks, Zaka!) and I’m following just about every project on the list. Here’s the problem: my VN fund has recently been emptied (I had to save up for a long time to afford to import Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, and buy Eden) and since I purchase all of my VNs, I kinda need to keep the hype in check until the VN money tree regrows some branches : P
2014 saw a burst of new Indie and translated VN’s on Steam. Do you think the demand for the genre is growing? I hope so, but without insider knowledge of the VN companies it’s impossible to tell.Hopefully this is an indicator of increased demand, but it may be something else altogether: I ran several surveys throughout the years and found that a lot of players pirate VNs only because there isn’t an easy way to get the games (kind of like movie piracy and the advent of Netflix). Steam is definitely that “easy way”, and so sales may just as much be coming from former pirates. In that case the bump is still useful: we’re finally starting to see a more accurate picture of the extant fanbase.
What effect do you feel Kickstarter and Patreon are having on VN development? I think these crowd-funding tools have done wonders for each project’s public perception, raised a lot of money, and accomplished a major feat by converting many torrent-users to paying customers. That first point (being able to control the public image and perception of demand) is a major boon for the devs, and they’re utilizing it well. I’m not really qualified to say any more than that. Personally I think it’s unfortunate that devs have to use those platforms (I’d rather give my money directly to the devs and let them keep the (substantial) fees skimmed off the top by the platform), but I get it. If it’s working for them, then I’m happy.
What do you think of fan-translated Japanese VN’s? The best thing we can do in niche hobbies, like visual novels, is help transform consumers into producers. The more fan translation groups (and original devs) out there, the stronger the hobby will be going forward. A rising tide lifts all ships. This is especially true when a patch’s quality is sufficiently high that the team can be hired by one of the licensing/distributing companies. If you’re asking about quality of TL… I have some personal experience with translation (I learned Russian in my early 20s and have done a lot of personal and commercial Eng < > Rus translation), and I know how hard it is and how widely TL quality can vary. Speaking specifically about VNs: I think we’re doing ourselves a disfavour if we shame new TL groups when their patch products aren’t as polished as an experienced teams’ results. What I’d like to do is help catalyse a standardised system to categorise patches: it’ll give readers an idea of TL quality, and it won’t shame TL groups’ efforts. I know the mantra has long been “one TL for one game”, but I see no problem if a group wants to develop a higher-tier TL patch over a lower-tier one for the same game. We’re seeing it more and more often these days. Life’s too short to make everything personal and constantly attack budding TLers efforts.
What’s next for Fuwanovel? Fuwanovel has grown and changed a lot over the years, and we’re always trying to innovate and come up with new and better ways to support VN players and devs. Recently we made a big announcement that we’re pivoting away from game torrents (it was a big decision, but it was the right one for us to make), and replacing them with several cool new features (with more in the pipeline): VNR Hub (http://reviews.fuwanovel.net) — We’re building a VN Reviews hub which both hosts and links to external reviewers all across the net. The goal of the hub (besides consolidating reviews all in one place) is to support VN reviewers and help maximise their traffic. All of the reviewer feeds are truncated (we only post a short blurb and a link back to the original post), and we hope to add as many reviewers as will sign up. We’ve got 10 blogs up so far, another 5 should be added within a week or two, and we’re actively searching for more. The hub is a little rough around the edges — it’s a work in progress – but we think it’s a cool idea and we hope to breathe new life into the VN reviews scene. (If you’re a VN reviewer, or you have a couple reviews on your blog, go to the hub and send us a message! We’d love to add you) Overhaul of Front Site + Mobile VN Database – We’ve pulled the front site apart piece by piece and have some awesome (and gorgeous) changes we’ll start to roll out over the next few weeks. On the PC database front we’re planning on adding >100 new games and updating each game page with information about where to purchase the games, where to download the patches, patching guides, and how to support each dev. The mobile database will be our best effort to collect all the VNs being released on iOS and Android, and helping players find the best and most interesting ones to play. Fuwanovel Academy – I think Fuwa’s the best place for new VN players to learn about the hobby, and we’re putting together a new suite of resources on the front site to help them figure this stuff out. We’ve got 5 lessons which will take a player from zero to playing their first VN in minutes, and then flesh out more advanced and nuanced hobby information. We’ve got a dictionary/lexicon. And we’ve got a player mentor program which at this point is just an experiment, but it aims to connect new players with experienced players who can answer their questions and nerd out with them about the games they’re playing. There’s a lot more coming after this, too, so be sure to keep an eye on the forums or the Fuwazette news blog.
Circa 2015.

The last two days in Lisbon
After our Sintra trip we had a few more days left to explore Lisbon and better way to do that than with a walking tour. I don't remember much from the walking tour and I attribute that to not really ever learning about the history of Portugal. But it was really fun to explore the city, looking at some incredible street art and taking in spectacular views as we climbed the hills of the city. Lisbon is very hilly, with yellow trams running along most streets with just enough room for the tram. There is also a large red bridge crossing the river, overall making Lisbon feel kind of like the San Francisco of Europe. On our walking tour we met two Dutch girls, one of them was a medical student funny enough and we went to have lunch with them. I had grilled bass to eat and it was really tasty. After lunch we went our separate ways, the three of us headed to the mall by our hostel to quickly grab some stuff. Afterwards Cheri took a siesta while Grace and I explored the neighbourhood Principe Real, with little boutique shops. That night we had dinner at the hostel, it was lovely visiting with different people and hearing about everyone else's adventures. The chef was the same man as a few nights before and his tiramisu was just as tasty as the first day. That night after dinner we went to a Fado show. Fado is a Portuguese style of music that is kind of about nostalgia, things and people you miss etc. The word in Portuguese for this is 'saudade', defined as a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Our walking tour guide earlier in the day described it by saying how the best times of your life are always behind you, because you don't know you're in the best time of your life until it's over, this word is kind of like that longing and missing what can no longer be had. When Fado is played there is a typical guitarist as well as someone playing a portuguese guitar, with one singer. The place we went was legitimately local, everyone around us was speaking Portuguese and we were all cramped in this tiny little bar, on benches when the lights are turned off and these red lights come on, really setting the atmosphere. At the show we went to the owner of the bar was the first to sing, then another middle aged women. The best part happened after this as Fado shows tend to also have open mic like features, and this women who looked like she was in her 80s got out of her seat and started singing as well. I don't speak Portuguese so the music didn't move me in the way that it did others, who were crying after each song, but nonetheless it was pretty cool to experience such a unique cultural tradition. The next day in Lisbon was our last day and it was also our beach day! We had a relaxed morning not heading out until just after 12 to avoid the hottest sun as it was supposed to reach 29 degrees that day. We took the train 20 min out of town to the town of Carcavelos, which has a massive beach that according to our sources was not ridden with tourists. We got to the beach started to soak up the sun. Grabbed a hamburger and a berry strongbow and sat on my beach sheet and enjoyed the view. One side of the beach has a massive fortress which made the beach even more unique and cool. There was a mix of people in the water, some people braving the cold Atlantic for a quick dip, lots of surfers, some paddle board surfers and even someone in a kayak-surfboard hybrid shredding some waves. I went to go and test the temperature of the water and it was incredibly cold, but at the same time it was 29 degrees outside and I may never be in Portugal and go swimming in the Atlantic again so I jumped in, head and all! I was so happy with my bold move after diving in that I didn't notice the gigantic wave right behind me until it swallowed me whole, sending me for a bit of an underwater tumble. I didn't stay in the water long as even though it got better once I jumped in entirely, it was still super cold. There is a reason all the surfers were wearing wet suits. I spent the next few hours reapplying sunscreen and getting a good dose of vitamin D. I only got a small sun burn on my back where Grace missed a spot but otherwise I escaped unscathed. We headed back to Lisbon around 5:30 that evening, showering and freshening up before grabbing some dinner and doing shopping. We were making a b-line for dinner but got distracted by an H&M, where we spent like 45 min and I bought a dress and shorts. After feeling accomplished with our great deals we headed to the restaurant where Cheri ate a few nights before called Restaurant Tripeiro. When she ate there before she was short a few euro cash so one of the guys working there helped her find an ATM but 4 machines in a row didn't work so they actually spent a bunch of time walking through Lisbon together. Anyways they were very happy to see her and that she brought even more business. Everyone that worked there was so friendly and it felt like a nice place to eat despite being in the touristy area, it had family run vibe. I had a traditional cod dish for dinner, cod with cream (Bachalhau com natas) which is kind of like scalloped potatoes but then there are pieces of cod mixed in as well. It was really good and I'm going to have to try to make it when I get home. For dessert both Cheri and Grace wanted ice cream but Grace wanted to know if she could get the vanilla ice cream cake in a small size like the chocolate could come in. Unfortunately no, but the guys working at the restaurant let this add to their jokes even further. When they brought out the desserts, they had the vanilla ice cream on a tiny spoon on a plate in front of Grace, saying this was the small size. It was pretty funny, all the jokes of the night between us had not been lost in translation which I really liked. After dinner we headed back to the hostel and started to pack up our bags as we were leaving the next morning for Porto, which is a few hours north of Lisbon. Thanks for reading, I'll be sharing our time in Porto in a few days! - Alanna
