The Difference of The Summer I Turned Pretty Books
Spoilers for book 1
So I’m on chapter 41 of The Summer I turned Pretty (book 1) Was belly always this rude or am I reading it wrong? To me it seems like she doesn’t care about Cam Cameron at all (Which is totally understandable if she doesn’t like him). But some of the things that she thinks about him are so weird and rude, all because she’s angry at Conrad. Like she’s just using him. Like when he didn’t want to go skinny dipping with her and she said he was probably going to find a “a homeless person and become friends and then tomorrow he would tell me his life story” or something like that. She also thinks super rude things about the other girls in the books.
All because she has this huge crush on Conrad. Who by the way appears to be a complete dick in this book. The show actually made his character a lot better, and we understand why he was acting so horribly. The book however makes Conrad almost seem like a bully, even in the flashback memories when they were younger. It’s so different from the show. Which I knew it would be but WOW
I can say one thing for certain: Every single character in the book is better in the show. This is coming from a life longer reader. I always defend the book over the adaptation but Jenny Han is making it really difficult right now. Of course this may change as I keep reading but I just had to get this out there because I’ve never seen anyone talk about it .

i’m like a conrad fisher blurb machine. seriously. requests still open for all characters. hope i did this justice!!!! belly conklin i love u and ur need to win everything u are the love of my life. this NOT PROOFREAD! and not written very well i can do better trust. ok bye.
You like seeing him happy. It suits him. His entire face just lights up the minute his lips contorts into a grin, it’s contagious. He needed this day, with his friends. With Jeremiah. With you. He really needed you here in Cousins; but Conrad Fisher is not known for being vulnerable, he’s not even remotely close to an open book. So, a couple of days ago, when he opened the front door to be greeted with you, Jeremiah and Belly; it took all of his strength to stop himself from breaking down on the spot.
He hadn’t seen you in a while, and you both blame it on the distance; really, you do. That’s why you love summer so much. Cousins. The beach-house. It’s just for you and Conrad; for a little while, it’s just magical. He knows he could be putting more of an effort in, but he really doesn’t want you to see how low he gets. You’re his sunshine; and he really doesn’t want to dampen that.
You were tucked into his chest now, peering up at him and feeling the pure serenity rushing through your veins at the sight of him smiling. You love him so much it hurts.
“Laser tag!” Belly snaps you out of your daze, her fiery competitiveness making you jolt a little. “Hey, Conrad; hands off my girl. No mind games, I’ve got my eye on you.”
She gestures for you to stand over with her, Taylor and Skye. Taylor narrows her eyes at Conrad, and sends you a happy little grin as she reaches her hand out for you to grab at. You shrug your shoulders, swivelling your head away from your boyfriends attempt to kiss you a quick goodbye; and all of your friends laugh loudly at the rejection.
“Yeah, Conrad.” You snide. “No mind games.”
He flips you off.
“We actually don’t need mind games. We’re simply the better team.” Steven declares. Conrad and Jeremiah yell out agreements as the three of them wrap their arms around each other.
You spin on your heel and face your three teammates. “Four against three. We have an advantage he—“
Conrad boos loudly. “You have no advantage.”
“Ignore him.” Belly chimes in, the two of you standing before Taylor and Skye. You nod. “We have to beat them. Game face on; in it to win it. Team Belly for life.”
“Oh please, that’s the worst pep talk I’ve ever heard!” Your boyfriend laughs. Steven and Jeremiah spew out words of agreement.
You raise your eyebrows. “Okay, Fisher. You wanna trash talk? Because remember that night I went to visit you and your dorm hall was empty and you wanted to—“
His face falls, and turns bright red. “Alright! Let’s play.”
Belly pulls you in for a hug. “Hit him where it hurts, I like it. Also.. I’m gonna need to hear that story later.”
You grin.
The game is actually not as lighthearted as one would think. So, maybe you’re all in your late teens; and maybe it’s a game aimed for six year olds’ birthday parties, regardless; you have a competitive streak that could possibly be labelled a little toxic. You need to win, badly. You’ve hit Steven and Jeremiah, easily. Your main target is Conrad; and you can’t seem to find him anywhere. Until you do, and you smile sweetly.
“Hi.” You whisper. He smiles and greets you back.
You hold your hands up in surrender. “I come in peace.”
You get a little laugh from him; and he shakes his head. You melt a little. “You know, you’re cute when you’re all competitive. Maybe slightly hot, too.”
You gasp. “Only slightly?”
“Super.”
“If I promise not to shoot, will you kiss me? Please.” You hit him with the puppy dog eyes and suddenly he finds himself not even caring about this game anymore. He loves you so much it makes him feel ill.
“Promise you won’t shoot?”
“Promise I won’t shoot.”
He pulls you in by your waist and kisses you softly, then a little harder. Your hands find his hair and you stand up on your tiptoes to deepen it. This is way too lovey dovey for an arcade. You fear not even Cam Cameron could prevent you guys from getting kicked out if some overprotective mother stumbles upon you.
He’s zapped in the back, and he freezes. Grimacing in aggravation when he hears Belly’s evil cackle from a few feet behind him. She doesn’t stop zapping, maybe enjoying it a little too much. You bite down on your bottom lip to trap your laughter.
“You promised.” He whines.
“Promised that I wouldn’t shoot. Unfortunately, Belly is a force to be reckoned with. The woman cannot be contained.” You shrug, and Belly hits him with a yeah, suck it Conrad.
He sighs. “So that was planned, then.”
“Yes and no.”
He falls in to step with you as Belly races forward to claim your spot as the winning team. “And no?”
“I was told to kiss you. Just not like that. That was..” Your voice trails off. “Wow. That was just wow.”
He laughs, and you laugh with him. “I love you, you know that? Like a lot.”
“Good. You should love me.” You exclaim, wrapping your arms around his neck. “I’m the world's best girlfriend.”
He nods, pushing the stray hairs on your face behind your ears. “You are. Seriously.”
You kiss him again, this time there’s no ulterior motive. You’re just sickeningly in love.

“I can’t believe you beat me in ski ball,” you giggled as you looked over at Cam. “I’m like the reigning champion.”
He shrugged. “Turns out working at an arcade does come in hand sometimes.” You cracked a smile before letting out a snicker.
You were a debutante last year which is where you met Cameron. Both your guys' moms worked at the country club that hosted the ball. You would run into him often because of this. After a while, you developed a little crush on him and had asked him to be your escort since you didn’t have one.
It wasn’t until this year you actually decided to pursue something with him. You finally asked him out on a date and he picked the location, which was the arcade he worked at since he got a discount.
Cam had just dropped you off at your house and refused to let you walk up to your front door alone. He was truly a gentleman who was adorable and he knew it.
You grabbed your key out of your pocket and unlocked the door. “Can I come in and say hi to your mom?” he asked, peeking his head through the open door.
You giggled and looked back at him again. “No, my parents aren’t home.”
“Oh.” He then looked down at his phone, presumably checking the time before tucking it back into his pocket. “You sure you don’t want to come back to my house? I don’t want you to be here alone.”
You shook your head. “No, my dad wouldn’t like me going over to a boy’s house at night.” He nodded his head and flashed a quick smile, agreeing with you. “But you can stay here and keep me company!”
You didn’t even think twice about the offer, you just said it. His eyebrows raised slightly as his cheeks dusted a red tint. “Okay,” he gushed.
You let him into the house before shutting the door behind you two and locking the door. You watched as he admired the interior of the house, his mouth slightly hung open. “What?” you laughed.
“Nothing!” he said as he looked back at you. “Your house just looks like a beach house.”
“Well it is on the beach.” This won a chuckle out of him as he continued looking around. “You want a tour?” you asked as you walked up to him.
“Sure!” he answered as he nodded his head.
You grabbed his hand and led him around the entire downstairs. According to him, his favorite room was the living room due to the fireplace. You then led him upstairs and showed him every other room before leading him to your own room.
You opened the door and led him in. “Here’s my room. Sorry, it’s a little messy.” There was a t-shirt and a pair of socks lying on your unmade bed. You quickly took those off and threw them in your laundry basket.
At least your room smelled good because of the essential oils you had just purchased. “I like the vines on the wall,” he commented as he pointed at them.
You giggled, “Put them up myself.” You then plopped down on the bed and looked at him as he took in every corner of your room. “You wanna watch something? I can pull something up on my Mac.”
He nodded his head and sat down on the bed next to you.
…
You weren’t sure how it happened, but one thing led to another and now you were on top of him making out. You pulled away and looked down at him as his chest rose and fell with his heavy breaths.
“Have you done this before?” he asked. His eyes reminded you of a puppy. There was so much innocence in them and his lashes gave his eyes a more doe look.
You were tempted to lie and said you had, but staring into his eyes just poured the truth out of you. “Uh… no,” you answered. “Have you?”
“Nuh uh,” he said. You licked your lips and looked off to the side. “Do you… uh… want to?”
You looked back at him and hesitantly nodded your head. You could hear the beating of your heart in your ear, the silence between you two was deafening.
“Okay,” he breathed out. His hand met the side of your face before tucking loose strands of your hair behind your ear.
He smiled at you and gently leaned forward to capture your lips in his once more. You sighed against his lips, his touch sending chills down your spine.
Your hands slid up his shirt causing a groan to escape from his lips. He kissed you harder and deeper this time. You could feel his tongue poking at your bottom lip, hoping to meet yours. You let him do so, his tongue danced with his.
You felt his hands run up your shirt, his hands felt cold against your heated skin. It made you shiver a bit but you enjoyed every second of it.
You pulled away again and let him take off your shirt. He stared at your topless body, drooling over your figure.
You gasped softly, your breath hitching when his fingers brushed across your breasts. Your hips jolted as your nipples hardened beneath your bra.
“Fuck,” you whispered.
He noticed your reaction and stopped what he was doing. “Is this okay?” he asked. You nodded your head, leading him to cup your breasts again.
Him touching you felt nice, but you wanted to do more than that. You were just too nervous to ask. You didn’t want to obviously have full on sex, but you at least wanted him to do more.
Your face must’ve given that away because he asked, “What do you want me to do?”
“Uh,” you thought about it for a minute. “Can you… uh…” Your face turned bright red as embarrassment washed over you. “Finger me?”
His cheeks flushed crimson and his eyes widened. He pulled his finger away as he nodded. “Yeah,” he answered. You hopped off of him and laid down on the bed next to him.
His gaze softened and you gave him an encouraging grin. He swallowed hard before he slid his hand down your shorts.
Your breaths hitched as your eyes fluttered close. His fingers moved in a circular motion around your clit. You opened your eyes as you held back any sounds that may escape your lips.
He pulled you back into a kiss, it tasted like vanilla ice cream and mint toothpaste. He moved a little faster, rubbing your clit with his ring and middle fingers until you let a moan slip in his mouth.
He then inserted his fingers inside you, your wetness made it easier for him. Your back arched as you let out a louder moan.
His kisses became more frantic, almost desperate. Every time he moved his fingers or thrust into your depths you would squirm. A small whine left your mouth as your hips bucked upwards.
You finally pulled away since you needed to catch your breath. His fingers sent a wave of pleasure through you. “Cam,” you whimpered. His wet fingers pulled out of you and continued to massage your clit until you finally came undone.
Your whole body felt drowsy but still buzzing with excitement. When your orgasm had passed and your breathing returned to normal you rolled onto your side. “Do you want to do it again?” you asked him with a grin.
He nodded and crawled back on top of you, but before anything could escalate, the sound of jingling keys and the front door opened echoed through the house
“Fuck,” you mumbled. “My parents.” You rolled your eyes.
He chuckled, “Now I can say hi to your mom.” You rolled your eyes and pushed him off you.

conrad thanksgiving fic please!!
This has been in my drafts for a long time...sorry. I might delete later, I don't really like it. It's not giving what I wanted it to...
Request: You’ve done Conrad dating a Haley James type of character, what about a Blair Waldorf type character? Old money, fiercely strong, rich, and outspoken. She and Belly would NOT get along, at all. He takes her to Thanksgiving dinner and Susannah is still there and she loves her
my taglists are here + you can send requests here at any time
—
Thanksgiving had always been a massive celebration in your family. Every year, your parents would go all out and host a dinner with their closest friends and their families. Your mother would direct the caterer team and make sure everything was perfect before the guests’ arrival. At the end the meal by having a slice of your father’s infamous pumpkin pie — which was your personal favorite part.
This year, Thanksgiving was going to be different. Your father was in Paris for business and your mother somewhere in Europe, expanding her collection of vintage designer handbags. Had you not been in college, you would have happily joined her.
‘’Why don’t you come with me to Boston?’’ Conrad asked as you watched him pack a bag for the weekend. ‘’My mom keeps asking me when she’ll get to meet you.’’
The thought of spending Thanksgiving alone had been looming over you, and Conrad's invitation was like a ray of light.
A small smile tugged at the corners of your lips. ‘’You told your mother about me?’’
‘’Not really,’’ Conrad explained, picking another sweater and adding it into his bag. ‘’She heard your voice when she called the other day and Jeremiah told her all about you. He’s such a big mouth...’’ He shook his head, wishing his brother could hold his tongue sometimes.
Susannah was ecstatic to have another guest for dinner. It was on very short notice and most of the preparations were already done when Conrad informed her of your addition to the table, but she would never pass up an opportunity to meet her Connie’s new girlfriend.
When you and Conrad walked in, Susannah was all over you, complimenting your dress and how gorgeous you looked. You were quick to return her compliments, pointing out how her eyes looked exactly like Conrad's.
You met the other guests — Conrad’s father and brother, then Laurel and her kids —, and all were surprised by who Conrad had brought home. No one ever expected him to date someone born of old money. He’s dated Nicole, but she was nowhere as rich as your family.
‘’Look at this amazing table,’’ Susannah said as she brought in the turkey, looking very proud of herself. ‘’Martha Stewart can kiss my ass!’’
Your eyes went wide for a short second, not expecting such words from her. She looked so sweet and delicate.
Conrad shook his head at his mother, happy to see her being herself again.
Everyone got seated, then Susannah spoke again. ‘’Before we eat, let’s go around the table and say one thing that we’re thankful for. Jere Bear, you can start.’’
You lifted your eyes at Jeremiah across the table, who looked nothing like his brother. If you hadn’t known, you would never have guessed they were related.
‘’I’m thankful for my mom,’’ the younger Fisher began, ‘’who reconsidered trying this new treatment for us. I don’t know what I would do without you, Mom.’’ He glanced at his mother, his eyes shiny with unshed tears.
Susannah squeezed his hand over the table while everyone was trying to not get emotional.
Conrad had told you about his mother’s breast cancer having come back in the spring. He tried to hide her sickness from you, but when you found him crying in his dorm on a Saturday afternoon, you knew something wasn’t okay. It was a tough subject for the entire family — especially since it was the second time she was going through this. For that, Susannah didn’t like to talk about cancer. She didn’t want her whole life to revolve around it just because a nasty tumor had returned in her body. She wanted to live her life the way it’s always been…and take a few more sitting breaks when needed.
In turn, the other guests said what they were thankful for. It went from Steven getting a car for his birthday to Belly becoming captain of her school’s volley-ball team and Laurel being a typical mom and being thankful for her children.
‘’Connie, it’s your turn,’’ Susannah said, motioning to her eldest son.
Conrad nodded at his mom, then cleared his throat. ‘’Jeremiah took the words out of my mouth, so I’ll say something else I’m equally thankful for.’’ His lips tugged up into a little half smile and he reached over the table to take your hand in his. ‘’I’m thankful for meeting my amazing girlfriend, who came into my life at the most unexpected, yet perfect moment.’’
You smiled back at Conrad, giving his fingers a little squeeze.
Seated before you, Belly snickered lightly. ‘’Can we eat now? Mom didn't want us to get snacks on the way here and I’m starving.’’
Laurel gave her daughter a pointed glare, wishing she would behave.
Although the pumpkin pie didn’t come close to your father’s recipe, you made sure to tell Susannah it reminded you of home.
‘’I hope your parents are not too sad that you came to Boston instead,’’ Susannah said, incapable of imagining spending Thanksgiving without her family — especially her boys.
‘’Not at all, Mrs. Fisher,’’ you politely replied. ‘’My parents were both out of the country this Thanksgiving. Business related travel.’’
Susannah raised an eyebrow. ‘’Oh? What is it that they do?’’
You didn’t mean to brag, but she had asked. ‘’My mother is a fashion designer and my father is a lawyer at my grandfather’s firm.’’
You caught Belly rolling her eyes and muttering something. You didn’t care what she thought of you, you were the one who got to share Conrad’s bed at the end of the day. Ignoring her childish reactions, you continued talking to Susannah about your parents. She was very interested in your mother’s designs.
When dinner was officially over, you all vacated the table. Jeremiah and Steven went to the living room to set up a game for the five of you to play — another family tradition. You had never played cards against humanity before, but you’ll give it a try.
Before you reached the living room, Conrad pulled you in a corner near the stairs, wanting some time alone with you.
‘’Belly despises me,’’ you pointed to him, keeping your voice down so no one would hear.
Conrad rolled his eyes as he curled an arm around you, knowing how you had the tendency to exaggerate things. ‘’She does not. She’s just…having difficulty accepting that I moved on.’’
You made a face at him. ‘’Don’t you defend her. Have you seen all the sour looks she gave me during dinner? Your eyes might be the most beautiful shade of blue, my love, but I believe they are in need of a visual acuity test. You should schedule one when we get back to Palo Alto.’’
Conrad chuckled, amused by your theatrics.
‘’Belly is going to be tougher to win with your charm. Like every ex-girlfriend, she’s gonna try to paint you as a mean girl, so you just have to show her that you’re the opposite. Compliment her. Tell her you like her sweater.’’
‘’But it looks itchy. It’s probably polyester.’’
The corner of Conrad’s lips turned into a smile.

summary: conrad overhears y/n craving touch in her life, so he decided to take matters into his own hands.
conrad fisher x reader
a/n: guys!! s2!!! don’t hate me, BUT i’m not enjoying it as much as i did s1… i will say steven is getting a lot better this season!! i got messaged to write this, so it is a request <3
“it’s just different, taylor,” y/n sighs. “it’s the complete opposite of sex, that’s what everyone wants. i just wish i was more than that.”
conrad peeps through her slightly ajar bedroom door. she’s on the phone with a friend, laying on her stomach in bed. his heart aches at her words.
y/n’s been with a few guys, hooking up at parties but they never want anything else. she barely gets eye contact or a smile after, just letting them walk away. she’s not used to receiving physical affection. she spends the long nights pretending someone is laying next to her, pretending conrad is next to her. she holds her own hands, she runs them down her own body to deal with the starvation. she only wants someone to love on her for who she is, not just for her body. it’s gotten to a point where she doesn’t know how to react when people respond kindly. when someone pats her shoulder, when someone gives her a meaningless hug. she takes those things very literally and to heart. she doesn’t ask for it blatantly anymore. she silently begs for anyone to just hold her hand or wrap their arm around her shoulders.
she and conrad have been best friends for years. they always spent summers together and never kept secrets from one another. they’d sneak out to smoke or go to parties, but sometimes they’d just sit in the house and talk.
it’s honestly painful for conrad to sit around and act like he wants her as a friend. he hates every waking moment that he hasn’t just completely spilled his love for her. what’s even worse, is that she wants it more. the only thing keeping them apart is each other. when conrad hears her upset voice from the room, he just wants to run in and hold her in his arms. his own fears, however, stop him. he figures he’ll have to wait, ease into it. plus, he figures, no harm in a little bit of teasing.
later that day, everyone had been outside and conrad, jeremiah, steven, belly, and y/n were in the pool as the moms watched. they decided to play a game off the top of their heads, y/n and conrad single-handedly destroying the other team. when she swam back over to him, she was about to give him a high five and savor the millisecond of contact they made.
when conrad’s hand enclosed on hers, leaving his grasp in her hands, her heart paused. she thought she was dreaming, the boy she loved actually holding her hand. it wasn’t just the slap of their hands, it was his fingers folded over hers which made someone hold a lighter over y/n’s heart. she tried to contain to beam that was about to reveal from her face.
conrad could almost feel y/n’s happiness through her hand. he thought it was adorable how excited she got over him, and he was thrilled that she had a bit of light added to her feelings.
conrad, being the cunning boy he is, decided to take a step further into y/n’s delusions. at the beach, he noticed that y/n didn’t apply any sunscreen to her back. he didn’t want her to burn, but it was the perfect chance to make her go crazy over him touching her body.
“are you gonna put any on your back, y/n?” he asks.
“oh-“ y/n whispers, her face turning red and she can’t tell if it’s from the sun or embarrassment.
“c’mere,” he smirks, almost like a magnet causing y/n to step over to him. he pointed for her to crouch down, so she moved her hair out of the way and conrad rubbed the sunscreen into her soft skin. y/n swore she was floating, or looked like she had a stick up her ass. her heart was thumping in her chest at the feeling of his fingers running down her spine, dodging the thin string of the halter bikini top she had on.
when she looked over at belly, she had a thin grin on her face in a mocking way. y/n shot her a death stare, and belly shuffled away into the water.
“y/n,” conrad speaks, putting the bottle down on the sand.
“yeah?” she flicks out of the zone she was in. “oh, sorry.”
“don’t be,” he says, not breaking eye contact with her. the moment her name was uttered from his lips, it felt like the world stopped turning.
“thanks, connie,” y/n smiles, brushing her hair back and running out to belly in the water.
conrad watches her figure run off as he takes in the heat of the sun, while also admiring y/n from afar. someone that ravishing deserved to be loved, and conrad knows he can.
the next time they end up alone together is in y/n’s car, windows rolled down and the speakers blaring music. they’re both singing gleefully along, conrad looking over at y/n to gander at her beauty whilst she drives. when she rolls the car to a stop, he and y/n giggle at her messed up hair. conrad decides to take a leap of faith, moving a strand of her hair behind her ear and out of her face.
“there’s that pretty face,” the moment he mumbles those words over the music, y/n can’t control herself anymore. the sparks from her love for him are like fireworks now, and they could explode any minute. his hand has been away from her for 10 seconds, and she’s already grieving his touch. she looks up at his face, a calm, relaxed demeanor filling the car. his hair still managed to look perfect despite the wind. suddenly, a breeze comes over y/n and she sits back in the seat releasing an awkward chuckle. “hey, don’t get all shy.”
she looks back into his eyes, more radiant than the sunset around the parking lot. the lack of cars makes it feel as though they are the only people on earth, and she wishes it could stay that way forever. conrad is her safe space. she’s gotten so close to having him right where she wants him, and she won’t let herself run away again. when she allows his hand to make its way back up to her cheek, she shuffles in the driver’s seat and moves closer to him. his touch is so light, barely coming into contact with y/n. she wants more. she needs more.
she leans in, finally connecting their lips as the dam breaks. everything in her body feels like it’s on top of the world, at last being able to take in the intimacy. his hands are wandering down her arms without breaking the contact between them. his soft lips were the only thing she could focus on besides her catching breaths.
the taste on her lips was sweet, making conrad want to just indulge in her more. the magic aroma of her perfume flooded her nose, just giving him more reminders of her as they made out in her car. the pair could only hear the passionate breaths between them and the screaming thoughts inside their head.
every single part of y/n was satisfying all moments of their kiss. the way their noses brushed together as she tilted her head, the feeling of his jaw in her hand, how his tongue danced with her delicately.
conrad couldn’t stop his hands from migrating to her waist, landing them on her hips and leaning over the gearshift. his large hands land on the back of her thighs as she swings over, straddling his groin as she dives in for another kiss. he guides her hips to roll back and forth, making them both whine out a bit at the tension.
“conrad-“
“god, i feel so fucking bad for any of the guys you’ve been with that haven’t cherished you the way you deserve,” his raspy voice comes through to her ears, pecking at her neck and grabbing the seams of her shirt.
“please don’t stop,” she begs as his hands run down her thighs and waist.
“that’s the last thing i’m gonna do, angel.”
he yanks off her shirt, letting her do the same to him. she runs her hands down his chest, feeling her nails and soft fingertips down his torso. it’s one of the best feelings he’s ever had, his biggest crush for years touching him exactly how he wants. he looks out in the parking lot, seeing no one and praising whoever invented tinted windows.
y/n sits up, unbuttoning her jean shorts and dragging them down her legs. she starts to undo conrad’s as well, pulling them down far enough to just reveal his boxers. she grinds her clothed pussy on his dick, causing a light groan to escape conrad’s lips. “oh fuck, y/n.”
“you’ve had your fun teasing me this past week,” she mocks, starting to dip her fingers into his waistline. “but i’ll be nice tonight.”
conrad’s hand sinks down, pulling her thin underwear to the side and running his fingers down her slit, collecting her arousal and teasing her clit. she moans out as approval for him as she pulls his dick out of his boxers. the feeling of ecstasy near her cunt runs through her whole body, only making her more excited for him.
she gives his dick a few pumps, making conrad hiss and moan out deeply into the air. she lifts her body up before lining her entrance with his tip, sinking down onto him, she takes his entire length.
“holy fuck,” conrad exhales, taking in the pleasure of her wrapped around his dick. she bounces up and down, her hand gripping his arm and protruding muscles. she pants heavily at the action, him eventually thrusting up into her.
“fuck, fuck, conrad!” she moans loudly, causing a smirk to grow on conrad’s lips. she feels his hands all over her. running down her back, her ass, coming back up to rub over her covered nipples. she takes in every last touch before he moves his fingers down, circling around her clit making her legs shake above him. her mouth is dangled open, her eyes and nose scrunched in pleasure. and it’s all from him. he’s finally made her feel as good as he’s always wanted to.
when conrad starts hitting the perfect spots inside of her, the tightness in her stomach returns and stays familiarly. “conrad, i’m gonna cum,”
“i know,” he breathes. “me too.”
he meets his hips with hers a few more times before pulling himself out of her and releasing all over her stomach and thighs. her legs are twitching still, coming down from her orgasm. she’s lightly grinding against his thigh, letting herself ride out the high.
y/n leans against conrad’s chest, his hands returning to her lower back once again and rubbing small circles on her skin. he never knew the touch of someone could be so comforting, especially when he knew how much she needed it.
“you’re the most beautiful person i’ve ever known,” he whispers into her ear.
“thank you, conrad,” she smiles. “for everything.”
“don’t thank me,” he replies. “baby, you’ll always be enough for me.”

Conrad Fisher x Eldest Conklin Sibling Reader
Blurb | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
~~~~~~~~~~
The first day always went the same. Unpack, swim, shower, nap, dinner. Sometimes the first bonfire of the season was the first day we got there, other times it was the next day. This year it was the first. So today’s order was, unpack, swim, shower, nap, dinner, get ready, party.
We all gathered around the table for dinner in our usual spots. My Mom, Belly, and me on one side, Steven and Jere across from us, then Conrad on the end next to me, and Sussanah on the end next to my Mom. The spots never changed over the years, unless we had guests to squeeze in somewhere. The other thing that never changed was the food. Susannah was an amazing cook. She had taught me to cook over the years. I had spent many hours by her side being her ‘little sous chef’ as she called me. This summer she told me she would show me her old college food recipe hacks.
I picked my head up from my plate when I heard Jeremiah’s voice, “So Y/n/n when do you leave for school? Do they have the swim team go early?”
I nodded, quickly swallowing my food so I could answer, “Yeah I have to go early, It's not too bad though only 2 weeks before the regular move-in date. I leave on August 5th.”
Susannah spoke next, “We’re so proud of you, our little fish.” Everyone chuckled at the nickname, ‘little fish’. Susannah had been calling me that for years.
“So what about you man when do you leave for training camp?” Steven asked Conrad, only he wasn’t the one who answered. Jeremiah did.
“He uh quit football.” Silenced stretched over the table. He what? I stared at him in disbelief, but in my heart, a part of me felt relieved for him. Being a student athlete isn’t easy and I knew Conrad only did football for his father. Sure he still loved the sport, but not enough.
“What you quit? Why man, I would’ve killed to play college ball?” Steven asked Conrad but again he didn't respond, his mother answered this time.
“He can always change his mind.” That made Conrad speak up, getting defensive towards his mother in a way I didn't usually see from him.
“I’m not gonna change my mind, I was just gonna sit on the bench all season anyway.” I sat quietly. I didn’t know what to say. Conrad and I bonded over our athleticism over the years, it felt weird to think we didn’t share that similarity anymore.
I hadn't realized I was staring at him until he looked back at me, our eyes locked and yet I still couldn't move. You'd think it'd be instinct to look away but as he came into focus, we just stared. I tried my best to read him to understand why he might do that, Why would he quit? I knew he didn't love it but he had gone this far with it, What made him change his mind?
There was something unreadable in his expression I didn't think it was regret or nostalgia or sadness or anger but instead some combination of all of it. I wondered why. He looked away first turning his attention to his plate as he picked at the food in front of him. I didn't push him on it, I wasn't sure I'd push him on it later either. I’m sure he had a reason, maybe it’d be best if I just let him tell me if he wanted.
The rest of dinner continued on like normal on the first night. Catching up, making jokes, and just being happy to be in each other's presence again. Everyone went their separate ways to get ready for the bonfire, and Belly and the moms stayed downstairs preparing for their movie night. Their tradition started a few years ago when Belly was 11, almost 12. That was the first year we went to a bonfire, Conrad and I were 14, and Jeremiah and Steven were 13. The bonfires were different then, we were with the younger crowd still unmixed from the older kids. It was in the backyard of the house owned by a kid Jeremiah and Conrad knew from sailing camp. Belly was so upset she couldn't come with us. She was too young and we didn't want to have to watch out for her the whole night, or entertain her for that matter. I love my sister and she's gotten a lot better over the years but she loves attention, even though she won't admit it. Having her come meant that I would have to keep her by my side the whole night, that I couldn't mingle with new kids and make new friends. The moms promised to hang out with her that night. They went to the drugstore in town and bought a bunch of candy. Susannah made brownies and they watched a movie, a PG-13 movie which Belly thought was awesome at the time.
I didn't do too much to get ready for the bonfire, it wasn't anything new, but I still like to look a little bit nice. It was the first time I was seeing everybody for the season after all. My hair was down, air-dried from the shower I took earlier so it had a natural wave to it. A little concealer under my eyes, some mascara, tinted lip balm, and that was that. I put on a tank top and some jean shorts with my navy Cousins Beach sweatshirt on top. It tended to get a little bit chilly on the beach at night. I looked at myself in the mirror, my eyes catching on the shimmer coming from my ears. My pearl earrings, Susannah's pearl earrings. She gave them to me for my 16th birthday just like her mother did and I've treasured them every day since.
I had to shoo the thought away as I felt myself getting choked up. I exited my room and went down the stairs, slipping on my very worn-in black Converse by the door. I heard stories of people in college having a designated pair of shoes they called their ‘frat shoes’. This pair of black Converse was that for me over the summer. They had been covered in sand, soaked from water, and scuffed with dirt, more times than I could count.
As I finished tying my last lace, the boys walked down the stairs. I sat up, shoes now tied, and patted my knees, “You guys ready to go?”
“Yep let's do this we're taking my car. Y/N you promised to be DD for the night right? Don’t worry though I won’t drink too much anyway, wouldn't want to be hungover for my first day of duty, right Y/ N?” Jeremiah answered.
I laughed, “No Jere, you definitely shouldn't be hungover. Wouldn't look good for me either after I vouched for you to get this job. But yes I’ll be DD.” He laughed with me throwing his arm over my shoulder as we walked to the car. Steven called shotgun which left me and Conrad to sit together in the back. I hated to admit it to myself but he looked good. How someone could pull off a gray hoodie that well I didn't know, but he pulled off a gray hoodie and jeans better than I'd seen ever before.
The drive was silent in terms of conversation but in the front seat, Jeremiah and Steven were singing their hearts out to Steven's ‘pregame’ playlist off Spotify. I kept my gaze out the window. Partly because I was still taking in the beauty of Cousins, partly because I could look at him. He looked too good and I always had to distance myself from Conrad before parties. I never knew how they’d play out with him. Sometimes he’d just stick close to us, the crew, and have a super fun night hanging out. Usually, that’s what he did when I was at the party with the guys but I’d been told the stories of his playboy party actions when I wasn’t there, and last summer I had gotten a glimpse of it. A girl named Nicole had come up to him and started chatting with him. Within seconds she was quite touchy-feely. Her hand was on his chest or upper arm, even playing with his hair every once in a while. I had whispered into Jere’s ear who was between me and the horny fest, “Who’s that?”
Jere took a quick glance over his shoulder and then whispered back, “Nicole, she and Conrad hook up every once in a while.”
I furrowed my brows, “I’ve literally never seen her before.”
“They met at a party last summer when you had left for swim camp, I think her family like only comes out for August.”
I swallowed the information and then excused myself to get a drink. I stole a beer from the kid's fridge and walked back feeling a little bit better now that I had a drink in my hand. But when I looked up to find Nicole on her tiptoes kissing Conrad against the wall, the power of the drink in my hand ceased. I turned back to the kitchen, leaning against the counter by myself for a few minutes. I had my focus down on my hands when I suddenly looked up at the sound of the refrigerator doors flying open. It was her. She was seemingly grabbing a beer from the fridge the same way I had been just a second ago. I expected her to walk back out to Connie, but instead, she stationed herself on the counter, so I took that as my sign to walk back. It was the first, and only time since I had seen Conrad's fuck-boy behavior, but the stories continued, and I never let myself feel unprepared for the chance I might see it again.
Now sitting in the car with him I did just that as I watched the houses go by. The streets are littered with beautiful bloomed hydrangeas. Suddenly, my hair was pushed behind my ear. I turned my head as his hand draped its way down from my ear to the ends of my hair. His face was soft but I could see the dimples around his smile starting to crease. I shifted in my seat, nervous with his attention on me.
“W-what are you doing?” I spoke lowly. Not that it mattered, Jere and Steven had no chance of hearing over our screaming.
“You’re hiding.” It wasn’t a question, it was a statement. And it left me speechless. “Your hair is always so soft, you’d think after years of chlorine that wouldn’t be the case.”
That eased the tension a little, as the corner of my mouth turned up. “Well, that's because I wear one of those swim caps.”
He laughed, “I’d pay to have a picture of that.”
I laughed with him, “Don’t say that to my mom 'cause she’d easily take your money for an exchange.”
“Let's go!” Jeremiah shouted, exiting the car along with my brother. I hadn't realized we had stopped.
I looked over my shoulder to see Conrad hadn’t moved. His eyes looked at me like he was observing my soul. I held my breath. As if not breathing would help ease the bubbles floating around in my chest.
I couldn’t bear it.
With an awkward laugh, I scooted out of the car and jogged over to Jere and Steven. I didn’t want to walk down alone. I knew the boys wouldn’t stay by my side the whole night, they’d go do other things within the first hour, but I liked to hold onto them for as long as I could. I didn’t mind the girls I’d met with the guys here over the years, but we were never that close. Nicole, Dara, Gigi, Marisa, and Shayla, we’d all lose contact over the school year. I also knew some people who weren’t from that crew. Some of them I knew from the swim club I used to do at the Country Club when I was little under the Fisher’s name. I wasn’t exactly supposed to be in the club seeing as I wasn’t truly a member but Susannah had a way of getting people to do what she wanted. Kindness can be blinding. The club was mostly made up of little boys, there were only 3 of us girls, Sydney, Ally, and me. Sydney was a nice girl. She was super smart, and ambitous, she’s set to start at Princeton for business in the Fall. Ally, I remained better friends with as we grew up. She was a dedicated swimmer like me so we even ran into each other sometimes during the school year at competitions. Ally was a total sweetheart, but she liked to have fun. She was easy to hang out with, she understood. I hoped they were here, I had forgotten to text them when I got to Cousins.
The fire wasn’t too crazy, they had to be careful not to draw too much attention from the cops. A big crowd of people had already formed though and it was only 9:30. I grabbed a cola from the cooler as I said hello to everyone coming up to us. Chit-chat was made with numerous people, and I couldn’t help but feel these conversations were really competitions for these kids. It was like every comment had to be a one-up to the one previous.
It was around 10:30 when a hand plopped down on my shoulder abruptly. I assumed it was one of the guys but then he came into my eyeline, Peter Millington.
“Yooo Y/N what's good?” He said a little slurred. As he moved to stand in front of me his hand dropped from my shoulder.
“Hey Peter,” I laughed. Peter was a good guy, he was flirty but it was harmless. Annoying, but harmless. I met him at the swim club when we were 10.
“So miss big shot where you heading this fall? I’m sure schools across the country were practically begging outside your front door!”
I laughed, “I won’t deny that, but I’m actually not going far. I’m gonna be going to Harvard.” His mouth hung open.
“No shit.”
“Yes, shit. How about you, still swimming?”
He shook his head, “Nah nah, I’m trying to be a sports agent, I’ll be going to Penn State.”
“That’s great, congrats.” I smiled at him.
He pointed at me a big smirk spreading across his face, “Yeah so you better remember me when you go all famous.” He finished his statement by slightly hitting the side of my arm.
“You got it Pete, I won’t forget you-”
“Belly what the fuck!” My head snapped and my jaw dropped. I took off over to them. I sort of abandoned Pete but eh, he’ll be fine.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Steven yelled.
I smacked his shoulder once I had run up to them. “Stop yelling! You’re making a scene!” I whisper-shouted at him.
Then I turned my attention to my baby sister. My baby sister, who wasn’t supposed to be here. My baby sister, who was just talking to a man 5 years older than her. My baby sister, who chose to wear a tiny skin-tight pink mini dress. My clueless, trouble-causing, baby sister.
“What are you doing here?” I asked her as calmly as I could.
“What I can’t go to a party?” She bit back defensively.
Excuse me? She didn’t get to give me shit for being concerned when she's the one who showed up out of the blue. I scoffed, “Did I say that?”
“What are you even wearing Belly we are on the beach why would you-“
“Steven. Knock it off. Go hang out with Shayla.” This was getting too aggravating. Steven was instigating too much, he must have already pissed Belly off by the time I ran up and now I had to deal with it.
“Did Taylor tell you to wear that or something?” I asked Belly, trying my best to figure out what was going on without having to have an argument in the middle of a party.
“Why can’t I just dress nicely without being questioned?” Why the hell was she being so defensive?
“Again did I say that?” I couldn’t hold back the bite to my tone.
She rolled her eyes before looking at me. But then her gaze sharply caught something over my shoulder. I turned to look. Jeremiah. Drunk off his ass. Standing next to the fire trying to strip and go skinny dipping. He had already stripped off his sweatshirt, shirt, shoes, and socks.
“Great.” I scoffed, running over to my now 2nd problem of the night.
When he saw me running over he smiled brightly, “Y/N! We are going swimming come on! OH MY GOSH Belly! You’re here! You come too!”
Belly laughed beside me and I would’ve thrown a dirty look her way if I had the energy to spare.
“No. No one is going swimming. It’s pitch black, the rip currents are crazy, and you are wasted. That’s all recipe for disaster.” I said authoritatively.
Jeremiah pouted. “Please?”
“No. Now put your clothes on.”
“Booooo.” Was he serious? He swayed as he re-dressed, his shirt blocking his vision. Good god.
“And get rid of the drink Jere, You’ve had enough.”
“Ughhh fine party pooper.” Before I could stop him he threw his drink into the fire.
“Jere-” The fire grew, a blaze lighting the beach. Shouts were heard as other drunk idiots followed Jeremiah’s lead and fueled the fire. “I can’t with this, Jere hang out with Belly.”
He smiled at that, “Alright come here belly button sit with me by the fire.” She giggled and obliged.
I took a deep breath, my feet taking me to the shoreline without even thinking. I needed to calm down. The chaos was overwhelming. I sat down on the sand a few feet away from where the water reached. The breeze flowed against me and I felt my mind begin to ease. This. This is why I always loved Cousins. I will never feel as at peace as I do when I’m next to the ocean. Water just calmed me down. I was the little fish.
I hoped that would never change. I hoped I would always be the little fish, no matter how big or how small the pond. No matter what happened down the line, the peace I felt by the water would never be disturbed. I’d always be, as Susannah so deemed me, a little fish.
I felt a plop next to me in the sand. I knew who it was without even looking, I could simply feel his energy. It was Conrad. He looked out on the water as he placed whatever drink he had in his hand down next to him. I kept my gaze out on the water as well. It felt good to just sit with somebody. With him.
“So you go around telling everybody you’re going to Harvard?” He said, slight humor in his tone.
I sighed, “I mean only when anyone asked.”
“No shouting from the rooftops?”
“No shouting from the rooftops. I’m not a big bragger.” I snickered, and so did he.
“You? Please! You have always been humble but you never shied away from sharing your accomplishments. You should be proud of yourself, it’s a big deal.” I just shrugged in response.
“I’m proud of you.” I looked at him then. His eyes were full of sincerity. I don’t think he knew how much that meant to hear. I caught his eyes flicking to my lips.
Wait what-
He was looking at my lips and when he looked back up his eyes shone with vulnerability. I couldn’t help myself when my eyes dipped down to look at his. I imagined what it’d be like to kiss him. His soft pillowy lips moving against my own. I wondered where he’d put his hands. He seemed like the type of guy to cup the back of your head. I’d feel the weight of his hand as he pulled me into him like he was desperate for our connection. Maybe one hand would fall to my hips or my thigh, acting like an anchor.
I couldn’t let my mind wander too far. Lord knows where that would lead. When our eyes met the tension was unmistakable. I couldn’t. I couldn’t let myself fall into him. I’d never stand back up.
“Stella? Alright, thanks man!”
Spell broken. Peter had just snatched Conrad’s beer from its spot between us and was taking a big slug of it.
“Pete what the hell?” I said, standing up from my seat on the sand.
“Dude give me my beer back.” Conrad stood up as well, Pete was standing between us.
“Whaaaat? You weren’t even drinking it man! It was just- you know just sitting there and all the- all the other Stella’s are gone.” He was plastered. I felt my chest sink. This isn’t gonna go well.
“I don’t give a fuck if there aren’t any left, that one is mine now give it back to me.” Conrad defended.
“Connie come on-”
“It’s just a beer man.” Pete turned to face primarily towards Conrad.
“Exactly, so give me my beer back and get yourself your own.”
“No.”
“Pete come on you definitely don’t need another drink.” I approached him, going to put my hand down on his shoulder to try and calm him down. Then just as I did he rolled back his elbow saying,
“Oh fuck off.”
I fell to the ground. His elbow collided right with my ear and the side of my face. Well, that hurt like a bitch. I’ll have a black eye on my first day back to work. Awesome.
“Y/N-“
I kept my eyes clenched shut for a minute before I felt a hand come to my shoulder, it was Belly and Jeremiah helping me up. My ears rang for a minutes before clearing. I watched as Steven and Jere broke up the fight.
Conrad looked at me as Steven pulled him back. I shook my head and looked away. Actually, I looked right at the flashing blue and red lights now coming from the top of the dunes. Cops, awesome.
“Enough!” I snapped everyone out of it, “Let’s go! Come on!”
I grabbed Belly’s hand as we ran up to the car, glancing over my shoulder quickly to make sure the boys were behind us.
“Jere keys!” I caught the keys as he tossed them to me, unlocking the car doors. “In! Now!”
I started the car, a scowl on my face. My head felt like it was vibrating but it wasn’t like any of them could drive with their intoxication level. I couldn’t believe them. How on earth did they think it was appropriate to act like this? I kept my eyes on the road, but I was sure they could feel the anger radiating off of me.
“Y/N look I-“ Steven started but I cut him off.
“I don’t wanna hear it.”
Then Jeremiah came in, “We didn’t mean to-“
“I said I don’t wanna hear it! Unless you want me to hit a drunk teenager stumbling home, you’ll shut up and listen to me! I’m distracted enough by the pinging in my head.”
They were silent after that.
I was mad and I had plenty of reason to be. I had been in this position with my sibling plenty of times, a few with Jeremiah, but never Conrad. I knew he started fights occasionally, but never with me around.
I pulled into the driveway and parked the car. Then I child-locked in all those mother fuckers. I unblocked my seatbelt and positioned myself to be able to see them all. Steven and Jere struggled to open the doors while Belly sat in the middle confused. To my surprise Conrad just sat in his seat, his focus down in his lap, he made no objections. Once the three backseat idiots figured it out they looked to me expectantly.
I raised my brows, “What you thought just cause I didn’t want you distracting me while driving you were gonna be off the hook?”
“Y/N what do you even care? You’re not our mom.” Belly said, rolling her eyes.
She only fueled my anger, “Yeah no shit I’m not 'cause Mom wouldn’t have put up with even an ounce of the crap you guys pulled tonight. Do you think I like playing mommy? Do you think I wouldn’t have rathered to enjoy the first night of my summer stress-free? You are lucky I’m a good sister, 'cause I could so easily walk inside and tell Mom everything that went down tonight. Then maybe you’d realize that having you deal with me instead of mom, is me being nice.” I watched my sibling's attitudes deflate. Jeremiah on the other hand was sitting there trying and failing to hide the smirk from his face. “What’s so funny Jeremiah? Do you think I’m not talking to you too right now? All of you put me in bad positions tonight because of how you acted. ”
Jeremiah chimed in again, “We weren’t that bad.”
My jaw dropped, “Not that bad? Let’s see who should I start with. How about you Jeremiah, I stopped you from getting naked in front of every teenager in cousins, potentially drowning and killing yourself, and even after I did that you acted like an idiot! Throwing alcohol into the fire, you’re probably the reason the cops came! Oh and just the cherry on top, the fact that you’re wasted after promising me you wouldn’t be.” He was quiet now.
“Steven had to cause a whole scene, but I’m not even that mad at him because he was right to be questioning you Bells! How the hell did you even get there?”
She peeked up sheepishly, “I walked.”
“You walked? Belly do the Moms even know you came to the bonfire?”
“No, I snuck out.” She spoke in a quiet tone.
“Jesus Bells! If you had just told me you wanted to come I would’ve vouched for you. For god sake, I would’ve given you a ride!” My head pounded. I rubbed my forehead trying to ease the pain, I needed some advil. “You guys can’t act like that. It’s dangerous, and quite frankly embarrassing. I’m just- I’m done dealing with it.” I took a breath and unlocked the doors, “Go inside guys. Go to sleep.” I sat forward with my head in my hands. I heard the doors open and close as they got out without a word.
Except he didn’t. I didn’t look over at him. I honestly didn’t know what to say to him. I didn’t know how I felt at the moment.
“Are you ok? Is your head alright?” He had worry in his voice and I couldn’t help but feel a flutter in my heart.
“I have a headache and I’ll probably wake up to a huge bruise on my cheek but I’m fine.”
“How come you’re not mad at me too?”
“I didn’t say I wasn’t mad at you.” I felt his eyes on me the whole time but mine stayed forward at the house.
“You didn’t yell at me like everyone else.”
“Because I didn’t know what to say to you not because I’m not mad at you.”
A beat passed. Just us sitting in the car before he spoke up again, “I’m so sorry you got hurt, Pete was plastered-“
“You could’ve just let him have the beer.”
“Y/N I wasn’t going to-“
“Look it’s been a long night, just- just go to bed Con.” I grabbed the keys and left the car. I hadn’t looked at him once and I didn’t look back at him. I couldn’t. I don’t even think I was truly mad at him, I mean it was Pete’s fault, not his. I was more overwhelmed with tonight’s events and I didn’t have the energy to unpack anything right now. My head was pounding and I needed to lay down. Work would be a nightmare tomorrow morning.
I went straight into the shower when I got inside. I gave myself a quick rinse. Susannah always stoked our bathroom with luxurious bath products for me and Belly. But I know Steven liked it too.
I walked into my room and plopped right down onto my bed. Man, it was soft, and it only seemed softer after a hard night.
I went to grab my phone when I saw it. A water bottle, advil, an ice pack, and a cookie, sitting on my bedside table, and I most certainly didn’t put it there. I knew who did. I knew it was him, and I could feel myself smile a little. I felt myself forgive him, he was hard to stay mad at. He wouldn’t mention it, I probably wouldn’t either, but we knew that we knew. That was enough.
For now.
Just a Ghost of a Girl You Once Knew and Loved
A/N: Hey guys I decided to make my first short fanfiction on here. Even though I’ve made a lot of fanfics on Quotev, this is my first time writing one on tumblr, so if I mess up, don’t judge lol! Anyway, I started watching “The Summer I Turned Pretty” with my mom, including watching season 2 this summer and I swear it just leaves me intrigued, makes me laugh, makes feel like I’m actually in it and I wish I really was. And I am so team Jeremiah all the way! So, after I watched 2x06 and 2x07, in episode 6, Jeremiah and Belly almost kiss while at the end of episode 7, they finally kiss, but I can’t find the GIF from episode 6 from when they almost kiss cuz that’s what I want this short fanfic to be about and take place in. And I also might switch POVs.
codes: Y/N = Your name
Y/EC = Your eye color
SUMMARY: So, I imagined what would happen if a girl in the show (Y/N) was best friends with Belly for a long time and had a huge crush on Jeremiah at first, and even Y/N hooked up with Jeremiah in the first season but after him and Conrad’s mom Susannah died and after Y/N has been seeing signs of Jeremiah having feelings for Belly, they broke up before the events of season 2, but Y/N’s feelings for Jeremiah have never faded and as the group reunited in season 2, Y/N has been holding onto hope that something could happen with her and Jeremiah because she’s missed him so much. And even Jeremiah feels the same, but he just wouldn’t admit to her or even to himself since a part of him still has feelings for Belly. And throughout season 2, Y/N has been trying some casual attempts to get Jeremiah’s attention but failed every time. So, one night as the gang throws a party at the beach house to honor Susannah, and while Y/N was hanging out with a couple of friends, she witnesses something that just pushes her to her breaking point, increases her insecurities and her anger/jealousy towards Belly while she’s been trying to keep her friendship with her intact, and Y/N’s heartbroken behavior strikes a chord in Jeremiah and hits him with guilt.
SONG: “Part of Your World (Reprise II)” by Halle Bailey from Disney’s live-action Little Mermaid. I feel like the song matches Y/N’s situation really well, and I love Disney songs, so I wanted to choose this song.
Y/N’s POV:
The party for Susannah has been going great! It’s fun, loud, and it was a beautiful way to honor Susannah. I hoped I’d get closer with Jeremiah this time because out of all the attempts to try and get his attention while he’s been going all lovey-dovey on Belly even though they’re not even dating, I’ve failed. Jeremiah and I had something special last summer, we bonded really well, he brought out the best in me, and there’s nobody like him. He’s irreplaceable. At first I’ve always been a very shy and self-conscious girl, but after bonding with Jeremiah, his childish personality and his sweetness and fun energy is just so contagious that it just makes you wanna have fun and laugh with him. So, he brought out the fun and confidence that I never knew I had in me. And we even felt a strong connection and spark between us. Being with him always made me feel safe, he’s easy to talk to, he’s relatable, his light blue eyes just take my breath away and you can easily see the emotion in them. But, unfortunately, I regret us breaking up in the first place after Susannah died. And I could see it in his eyes that he does, too. Whenever he and I would talk, I could easily see that he feels lost and confused, like he wants to be with me again as if us breaking up was a mistake for him, too, but also another part of him wants to be with Belly since his feelings for her never faded while my feelings for Jeremiah have never faded. And every time he’d be affectionate and sweet towards Belly, my close best friend and who’s like a sister to me, I can’t help but feel nauseous as if seeing the sight of them together just makes me wanna puke, even though they’re not dating, but I respect their close friendship since they grew up together, and I have been trying to be strong and understanding and nice, but inwardly I just feel sick and it’s suffocating me, like I’m tired of bottling it up. And I have no one to talk to about it since I feel like they wouldn’t understand and that they’d think of me as just a sad pathetic ex-girlfriend who can’t get over her ex-boyfriend.
After watching Taylor and Steven’s talented dance moves for the song “Party In The U.S.A.”, I went back to hang out with Nicole and Dara. We laughed and talked for a bit until one of the girls brought up a relationship she’s in, and that immediately made me think of Jeremiah.
Since Jeremiah has always brought out the confidence in me, I have been thinking about it for a while and I have been waiting all summer to tell him my feelings and that I’ve never stopped loving him even though I was scared to since I didn’t wanna stand in the way between him and Belly. But, I realized I’ve got nothing to lose, and that it’s now or never.
I excused myself from the girls and walked into the crowd to look for Jeremiah. I looked and looked and looked. Until I saw something that just hit me in the heart. I saw Jeremiah and Belly sitting together closely, talking and looking at each other that way. I stood and watched worriedly as I glanced at Jeremiah and then Belly. The way they looked at each other was the same way me and Jeremiah looked at each other last summer when we hooked up and fell in love. I felt like I just wanted to run out of the room and throw up. Then, they stopped talking while still looking at each other with smirks, and then they both slowly leaned in, almost about to kiss until a girl yelling “Fight! Fight!” in another room interrupted them and gathered a crowd. Seeing Jeremiah and Belly almost kiss just hit me in my breaking point. I was about to tell Jeremiah how I felt and that I never stopped loving him, but after seeing what I saw…my chance was ruined. I was too late. The hope I had in me all summer was broken and turned into dust. And I felt ignored after all the tried-and-failed attempts to get Jeremiah’s attention, like as if I were a ghost of a girl he once knew and loved. Like as if what we had before was just nothing.
While the fight between Taylor’s ex-boyfriend Milo and Belly’s brother Steven was occurring in the other room, some other kids didn’t bother to watch the fight and just stayed behind, wanting to stay out of it. And also they were also either drunk or high. I’ve never been one to drink or do drugs or smoke or any of that stuff, I’ve made a vow to myself that I’d live life in a clean state of mind. But after witnessing Jeremiah and Belly together, since it hit my breaking point, I was at that stage where I didn’t wanna feel anything anymore.
I walked over to the group of kids in the kitchen, not wanting to talk to them, and instead just opened the fridge and grabbed a bottle of beer. Since my emotions were shut off, I let my impulsiveness get the best of me and I started to open the bottle and chug the alcohol drink. I didn’t care that it tasted bad, I was just tired of feeling this way. After finishing half of the bottle already and walking around the party, trying to avoid Jeremiah, I then saw him and Conrad standing outside with Belly stuck in the middle of them and the two brothers were arguing, and I could easily tell that it was about Belly.
Ever since Belly has been hooking up with Jeremiah at first and then Conrad and then having to choose between them, I felt bad for her but I also got irritated at her because every time they would be loving and sweet to her, instead of listening to her heart about who she truly wants to be with, she just kept letting it happen and kept throwing herself at them, playing both brothers. They both don’t deserve that. Especially Jeremiah since after he and I got together, Belly and Conrad got together temporarily, and then since Jeremiah’s been crushing on Belly while he was really in love with me, and he was angry at Belly for hooking up with Conrad since her and Jeremiah kissed before while he and I were together which also caused our relationship to go downhill. The love triangle between Jeremiah, Belly, and Conrad is just stupid and annoying since Belly won’t make a decision about who she truly wants to be with, and now with me in it, it has turned into a love square. And the last thing I wanted was to be involved in a love triangle, let alone a love square. And now I got dragged into it due to my feelings for Jeremiah never leaving me. Could things get any worse?!
I continued drinking the rest of the bottle of beer, trying to numb everything inside me and to just escape from the pain. I started to get a little tipsy and even though it felt wrong, it also felt good since it helped numb the pain. Then while stumbling around the party and then sitting on the floor in a corner of a room, taking a few more swigs of the beer bottle, I started to lose myself into sorrow and despair.
The bottle of beer was then almost done. I was now really drunk. I kept accidentally bumping into people while stumbling and trying to keep myself standing. But, I started to hear Nicole ask me if I was okay since she saw that I wasn’t myself. My facial expression was blank, my eyes looked like as if something inside them had died, my face was tear-stained which caused a bit of mascara to run down my face, and my hair was a little bit untidy. When she asked if I was okay, my vision was blurry, my hearing was distorted and echoey, and my head was spinning and fuzzy. I didn’t respond to Nicole and instead just accidentally lost my balance near another kid who was carrying a glass of a drink, causing that kid to accidentally drop his glass which broke when it fell. And when I fell, the palm of my hand landed on the broken glass which caused my hand to bleed a little, but I didn’t feel the pain since I was numb and drunk.
A tiny crowd of the people gathered around me and started to look at me in concern, worry, and confusion all at once, and that was the last thing I wanted. I didn’t wanna be viewed as someone who was fragile and vulnerable, even though I knew that it was okay to be vulnerable once in a while since everybody has strengths and weaknesses. But, I just didn’t care anymore.
While there was a few people gathered around me, I kept reassuring them that I was okay, but the one person who I definitely didn’t want to check on me was none other than Jeremiah himself, but he checked on me anyway.
“Y/N? Y/N, are you okay?” Jeremiah asked as he kneeled down beside me to try to help me up, but I kept brushing him off and tried to pretend that I wasn’t hurting, both emotionally and physically. Emotionally from witnessing Jeremiah and Belly almost about to kiss, and physically from losing my balance due to my drunken state and falling to the floor and the palm of my hand landing on broken glass. So I even tried to hide my drunken state from Jeremiah since I didn’t want his pity.
“It’s f-f-fine. I’m…fine, Jer.” I tried to reassure, my voice slurring a bit as I tried to help myself up and stand on my own feet without losing my balance again and without Jeremiah seeing my bleeding hand.
But, he was looking at me that way with concern and worry. I finally managed to stand on my own two feet and then walked away from the crowd, stumbling and limping.
Jeremiah’s POV:
Seeing Y/N like this had me worried. I didn’t know what was going on with her, but she seemed pretty drunk and she looked upset for some reason. She shouldn’t be alone. She could get hurt or end up doing something stupid.
I followed her as she stumbled out of the room, but I lost her in the crowd. I looked around for her until something caught my eye. I saw her outside on the patio, walking away from the beach house and just heading down to the beach, still stumbling and limping.
I walked outside to the patio and follow Y/N down to the beach with the dark night sky in the view. She didn’t look like herself. I was really worried.
“Y/N! Y/N, what are you doing?” I asked her in concern as I caught up with her. Her pupils were dilated, her hair was untidy, she could barely walk, and she even had mascara running down her face so she looked like she had been crying. But why?
“Going to the beach. What do you think I’m doing?” Y/N asked sassily, her voice slurring. She was definitely drunk. I’ve always known her to be a goody-goody girl who would never want to drink, do drugs, or smoke, but she was actually drunk. What changed?
“But, y-you’re drunk. Are you sure you’re okay? And you fell back in there. Are you hurt?” I asked as I stopped her from walking any further towards the water since she’s too intoxicated to go for a swim. When I asked if she was hurt, I looked all over her body for any cuts or bruises or anything, until I spotted her hand bleeding. I took that hand gently and looked at her worriedly. But she immediately yanked her hand away and glared at me for some reason before stumbling to walk further towards the water. I stood in front of her and put my hands on her shoulders, preventing her from doing so.
“Y/N, your hand is bleeding. We need to clean that up and put either some band-aids or gauze on there. Let’s just go back inside, okay?” I said to her calmly, but sternly and worriedly before I put an arm around her shoulders to help her walk back inside the beach house. But she immediately refused and put up a fake smile, and her fake smile looked angry.
“No! No, no, no, no. I’m fine, Jer. You don’t need to help me. Why don’t you go and help Belly instead, hm? I’m sure she’s probably going through a lot after being stuck having to choose between you and your brother. So go ahead, why don’t you go help her and be her shoulder to cry on? I can take care of myself.” Y/N said while slurring before letting out a hiccup at the end of her last sentence. She was being stubborn as hell. And this was also a side of her that I’ve never seen before. Why was she acting this way, especially towards me?
“Y/N, I’m not gonna leave you out here by yourself, especially with your drunken behavior. I’m not gonna let you do something stupid. Like, what were you planning to do out here at the beach? Why were you walking towards the water?” I asked her, trying to be calm and gentle, but I had a bad feeling about Y/N’s intentions that it built worry inside me which caused me to raise my voice a little bit.
“None of your business. What is this, 20 questions or something? Just leave me alone, Jeremiah.” Y/N spat out, still slurring before she walked past me, still stumbling. I watched her about to go into the water, but her legs were shaking as if she could barely stand. I wanted to stop her and go get her, but I wanted to see what she was planning to do first so that I can really know what’s going on. She stopped for a second as the water reached to her knees, then she kept going until it was at her waist and she started to cover her mouth with her hand and then cover her nose with her other hand before she began to dunk her head into the water.
I widened my eyes as it immediately clicked. Y/N was about to kill herself by drowning while drunk! As I finally knew what she was about to do, I immediately took action and rushed into the water, grabbing Y/N by the waist and dragging her out of the water. She started screaming protests at me to let her go, but I couldn’t let her do this. I care about her so much. And…I actually love her, even though a part of me loves Belly. I just don’t know what to do. But after seeing Y/N like this and after us reuniting along with the others, I was actually really glad to see her. She’s a sight for sore eyes. She’s beautiful, she’s kind, caring, warm, honest, sweet, sassy, headstrong, authentic, moral, the voice of reason, and a talented singer with a beautiful voice. She’s even a better singer than I am. I did like her when she was a shy and introverted girl, though, I thought she looked adorable whenever she’d blush. But after we bonded last summer and fell in love, I started to see a more confident and silly side of her and I couldn’t help but love her even more. I miss what Y/N and I had together, even though I love Belly, too, but it’s not really the same with Belly actually. Y/N’s the one I feel something strong and loving for. She’s even tried to be there for me after my mom died, but I was too blind in my own grief and in my own conflicted feelings for Belly to even see it. How could I have been so blind?
Seeing Y/N acting like this was just heartbreaking and shocking to me. I was even more worried about her, especially since she just tried to kill herself by drowning in the ocean while completely drunk.
As I dragged her back to the sand while she was screaming protests at me, I ignored the protests and looked at her in shock, anger, heartbreak, and worry all at once.
“Y/N, what the hell do you think you’re doing? Why are you trying to kill yourself?” I asked her sternly as I held back tears in my eyes since I was trying to be strong for her.
“Why did you just help me?! I told you to go be with Belly!” Y/N snapped while slurring as tears filled her eyes. Why is she bringing up Belly while I’m focusing on Y/N and her safety?
“Y/N, this isn’t about Belly, this is about you. You’re drunk, you look like you’ve been crying, you’re acting like a different person, and you tried to kill yourself! Why are you acting like this, Y/N? Did something happen? Talk to me.” I said to her sternly, but calmly as I tried to keep myself together.
“No, if you wanna go be with Belly, be with her! She’s all yours! I won’t stand in the way! So, just leave me alone!” Y/N snapped as a tear rolls down her cheek, her voice still slurring. Why is she talking about Belly like this? She’s Y/N’s best friend and they’ve always been like sisters. This wasn’t the Y/N I knew and loved.
“Y/N, what are you talking about? What do you mean you won’t stand in the way and that Belly’s all mine? Where’s all this coming from?” I asked her in concern, hoping to get her to talk. But, she immediately exploded the truth about the cause of her problem while slurring.
“I SAW! I saw everything! I saw you and Belly almost kiss back in there before the fight between Milo and Steven broke out!” Y/N shouted through her slurs and through her tears. She even had her eyes either looking down or her eyes closed as if she could barely look at me.
When she admitted that to me, I started to remember when me and Belly talked back in the house during the party, and we talked about the flings I had from last summer and through the whole year after me and Y/N broke up and when Belly got together with Conrad. Then I remembered telling Belly that she’s a better kisser than out of all the girls and guys I’ve kissed, including Y/N. I can’t believe I actually said that because Y/N was a good kisser, too. She really was. And I even remembered during this whole summer when me and her and the rest of the gang were hanging out and Y/N tried some attempts to get my attention since she must’ve had hope for us and I didn’t even realize it. I’ve been ignoring Y/N all summer and I didn’t realize it till now. How could I have been so stupid?!
I felt such a pang of guilt and regret for how I’ve been treating Y/N. I’ve treated her as if she weren’t around and as if she were second and I’ve been putting Belly first. I realized Belly’s not the only one stuck in the middle of a love triangle and between me and my brother, I was even stuck between two girls who matter so much to me. With Belly, it was real and I really loved her, at first it was like a brother and sister relationship, but…ever since I saw her last summer, I was done for. She took my heart with her. But then, at that time, Belly brought Y/N to Cousins for the first time and introduced her as her best friend, and Y/N just took my breath away. I know that I started to feel something for Belly, but when I met Y/N, I knew there was something special about her that was just so magnetic to me. I wanted to know her. And what we had was real and strong, too. And I realized now that it was stronger than what me and Belly had because even if Belly liked me back a bit, it was always gonna be Conrad for her, even if she wouldn’t admit it. It finally hit me.
Y/N’s the one for me.
I looked at her with guilt, regret, and sympathy as I realized what I put her through and what she had to witness tonight. I put a hand on her arm, trying to be as comforting as possible.
“I’m really sorry, Y/N. I-I-I didn’t realize that you…” I was just at a loss for words as I still kept trying to process this.
“That I what?! Huh? That my feelings for you still haven’t faded and that I never stopped loving you?! I’ve tried to get your attention all summer and tried to get you to realize that I’m still here, but you just kept pining for Belly and acting all affectionate to her while you ignored me and acted as if I wasn’t the room, like as if what we had together has been forgotten! And you and her aren’t even dating, yet you act like you are, even though you two are best friends, but why can’t you just admit it to yourself that…that you still love me, too? I’ve seen it in your eyes, they can easily tell what you’re feeling. And when you were around me this summer, I had hope for us! But you just won’t open your eyes and realize what’s right in front of you! I was about to tell you how I felt, and yet I catch you and Belly about to kiss! I just…I just couldn’t bear the sight of that, so I’m actually glad the fight between Milo and Steven broke out and interrupted you and Belly. I know that’s rude to say, but I just can’t pretend that I’m okay anymore! All this time ever since everything that’s happened, I haven’t been okay! And neither have you, and I’ve tried to be there for you and reconnect with you at least, but…you didn’t want anything to do with me and the only person you’d talk to was Belly! I’ve gone through enough hell. And so has Belly, so I’m just gonna go…have a little ‘chat’ with her.” Y/N explained everything to me through her tears and her drunken slurs about the hell she’s been going through ever since me and her broke up and ever since my mom died.
And as she said everything, it was all true and I didn’t even realize it all till now. And what she said struck a chord in me. I’ve been leaving her all alone and I shouldn’t have done that. Well, not anymore. I’m not gonna leave her alone anymore, no matter how much she stubbornly tells me off. I’m gonna make up for my mistakes. Then, as Y/N says the last part, she stumbles as she stands up on her feet, holding her fingers up like quotes. I knew she wasn’t just gonna have chat with Belly, she was gonna confront her. I couldn’t have her do that. Her friendship with Belly has always been so important to her so I couldn’t let her be the one to destroy it by having a confrontation and argument with Belly.
“Y/N, no. Just…Just come back to the house, I’ll let you stay with me, okay?” I offered kindly as I tried to help her and not let her be by herself in her drunken state and in her painful heartbreak.
“No! I don’t need saving, Jer. I’m not some piece of glass who’ll end up breaking. I’m fine. Just let me go.” Y/N protested as she tried to walk away from me and walk back to the house. I wanted to stay with her, but I had to respect her decision if she could handle it. I watched in concern from behind as Y/N kept stumbling up the small wooden board steps that would lead up to the patio of the beach house, her legs started to shake again as if she could barely stand and walk.
She then took another step until she tripped and fell down to her knees, making me immediately rush up to her side and try to help her up and help her walk.
“Y/N, let me help you.” I offered while trying to help her stand, but she pushed me away and kept protesting.
“No! Just leave me alone, Jer! If you don’t walk away right now, I’m gonna have to beat the shit out of you!” Y/N threatened drunkenly while she was holding back tears again and trying to stand up on her own.
“Oh, yeah? Let me see you try. I’m not gonna leave you, no matter how many times you push me away. I’ve pushed you away already, I’m not doing it this time.” I responded with sternness and determination in my voice.
As I challenged her to see her try if she can fight me off and push me away, I knew she didn’t have the guts to do it since I knew she still had love in her heart for me. She sat on her knees while I was kneeling next to her, and she turned around and tried slapping my chest and shoving me away, but her pushes weren’t strong enough. She kept trying and trying through her frustrated grunts as if I were her punching bag, but I didn’t let it affect me. She needed to take it out on anything or anyone. And since she was mad at me, I already took responsibility for how I treated her, so I felt like I deserved to be slapped and pushed since I was actually such an asshole.
Then after a few failed shoves and slight slaps from her, she started to get frustrated and feel defeated since I wasn’t going anywhere. Her shoves and slaps started to weaken and she immediately began to finally let out her tears even more. She broke down sobbing as her attempts to push me away and slap me were weakening and slowing down, and she started to lean her head and body against me while sobbing in defeat, frustration, and heartbreak. I wrapped my arms around her securely and protectively, holding her close to me and never wanting to let go of her.
“Shhh…it’s okay, it’s okay, Y/N. You’re okay, you’re okay, I’m here. I’m right here and I’m not going anywhere, okay? Shh…” I whispered softly while holding her tightly but gently, trying to comfort her. She still kept crying in my arms, one of my hands rubbing her back and my other hand caressing the back of her head and her hair. I held back tears as the sound of her cries just broke my heart.
“Y-You left me, Jer…! Why are you still here? Why aren’t you leaving me now? You…You love Belly…!” Y/N said through her drunken sobs as if she was expecting me to just walk away from her after I’ve been ignoring her all summer that she was used to being walked away and abandoned. My heart was just absolutely breaking for her even more. She didn’t deserve this at all. How could I do this to her?
“Because…Because I…I-I-I still—” I was about to respond to her that it was because I still loved her, but before I could finish, I felt her body go limp and she was breathing normally and peacefully, her eyes were closed while her face was tear-stained, and she still had mascara running down her face. She was passed out drunk in my arms.
I sighed guiltily and shamefully, and yet in relief that she was finally out cold so that she wouldn’t do anything stupid while drunk. Then, I put a hand under her legs while I put another hand under her back, lifting her up and carrying her bridal style.
I walked back in the beach house while carrying a passed out asleep Y/N through the party in the house, hoping everyone wouldn’t gossip or be concerned about it since I was already taking care of it. And also some of the kids were drunk anyway, so I’m sure some of the other kids didn’t care.
Then, I carried Y/N to my empty bedroom which only had my sleeping bag since me and Conrad’s bitchy aunt Julia removed everything from the house since she was selling it. And I hated that the beach house was being sold. It held too much memories of me and Conrad’s mom. But now that all the furniture is gone, it’s like memories of our mom are gone, too.
I gently laid Y/N on another sleeping bag that I had laying next to mine and I tucked her in, making sure she was comfortable. Then, I stood up and looked at her sleeping figure. She looked so peaceful and beautiful, despite that she was a drunken mess tonight and despite the mascara running down her face, she still looked beautiful to me. Then, I started to hear a girl crying coming from the bedroom next to mine. I leaned against the wall and heard Belly drunkenly crying in her bedroom. She was trying to call her mom, Laurel, for help since she had nowhere else to turn to about the situation with her having to choose between me and Conrad which is causing tension between me and my brother and also she told Laurel about trying to get the house back while everything she’s trying to do to help just keeps going wrong and she needed help. Her cries even broke my heart. A part of me wanted to go in there and hold her. I couldn’t bear to have my best friend upset like this. But, after what Y/N has been through not just tonight but throughout the whole year?
I thought about it for a moment again and I looked over at a sleeping Y/N, and I told myself again that I’m never gonna abandon her again. I’ve been focusing on Belly and putting her first all summer that I’ve been ignoring Y/N, so it’s time to make up for my mistakes and put Y/N first this time.
I slowly walked over to her and laid down in my sleeping bag right next to the sleeping bag that Y/N is sleeping in. I stared at her sleeping face again and after what happened tonight, I can’t get it out of my head. I could’ve lost Y/N tonight and it was my fault. As I looked at her with remorse, guilt, care, and sympathy, it felt as if a magnet was pulling me. I sat up and leaned forward and down, planting a gentle loving kiss on Y/N’s cheek before laying back down, getting ready to go to sleep.
Y/N’s POV:
As I was passed out asleep from being drunk tonight, I had no idea where I was at the moment. But, I opened my eyes very slightly in which my vision was very blurry and the room was dark since it was nighttime and my hearing was ringing and echoey as the party was going on downstairs. All I could see was someone’s sleeping face in front of mine, but I couldn’t tell who it was. Instead, my eyes just closed again as my eyelids just felt too heavy to be open and my head was pounding.
The next morning, I started to feel like crap. I opened my eyes slightly as the ringing in my ears started and then finally faded away. My head was pounding, I felt a bit nauseous, makeup was running down my face, and my hair was untidy. I looked around the room and wondered how I got here. I also noticed a gauze wrapped around one of my hands. I couldn’t even remember a thing about what happened last night. I could only remember that I was dancing and hanging out with a couple of girlfriends, and then I was crying for some reason, and that I took a walk on the beach. But the rest was all just a blur.
As I slowly sat up, I immediately heard a familiar voice next to me.
“Morning, Y/N.” Jeremiah said to me sleepily but with a concerned and sympathetic look on his face. I looked over at him and seeing him lay there next to me startled me and left me in surprise. What was he doing here laying next to me while he ignored me all summer? What the hell happened?
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion as my head was still pounding a bit.
“Jeremiah? Wh-What are you doing here? What am I doing in…in your empty bedroom? What happened last night?” I asked nervously and in confusion, my voice slightly slurring since I was hungover, and I needed answers.
“You don’t remember?” Jeremiah asked in concern as he sat up, sitting next to me. I tried to think hard and see if I could remember anything about what happened last night, but I couldn’t remember. I looked over at him and shook my head.
Then, the moment was interrupted when me and Jeremiah heard Belly and her mom Laurel arguing in the room next door, their voices muffled until we heard Belly’s bedroom door open and close. Jeremiah helped me stand up to my feet before we both walked over to the door and opened it, only to see a crying Belly walking past us and past Conrad in the hallway. She looked behind her and glanced at us before continuing to walk away and walk downstairs. I wondered why she was upset. But whatever it was, I was concerned and felt bad for her.
Then Conrad looked over at us and glanced at me before looking at his brother as if he were encouraging him or something. Jeremiah nodded softly at him before taking my hand, closing the door behind us as we’re still in his empty bedroom. He sat us on the sleeping bags as I looked at him in confusion and in concern. He looked like he wanted to tell me something.
“Y/N…are you sure you don’t remember anything about last night?” Jeremiah asked me in concern in which I shook my head slightly before responding.
“All I remember is dancing and laughing while hanging out with a couple of girlfriends and then…I was crying for some reason, and then I took a walk on the beach. And the rest is all just a blur. And now for some reason I ended up here. What happened, Jer?” I explained all I could remember before asking him in concern about what else happened last night.
He took a deep breath while trying to find the right words to explain to me about what else happened last night. He looked as if he didn’t wanna bring up what happened last night since it would bring back the pain and heartbreak.
“Well, um…you, uh…you were pretty drunk. And…you were at the beach to go in the water to…to commit suicide, but I stopped you and asked you what was wrong, and you…admitted that you, um…saw me and Belly…almost kiss. And…you also explained to me the hell you’ve been going through ever since our breakup a few months ago and ever since my mom’s death. And…also that I’ve been ignoring you all the summer since I’ve been focusing a lot on Belly and I was too blind to see that…that you were still in my life and…” Jeremiah explained everything to me before he trailed off and paused as he could barely finish the sentence. His eyes were tearing up as he felt huge remorse and guilt for what he put me through and he wasn’t sure if he could ever forgive himself.
“God, I’m so sorry, Y/N. I’m so, so, very sorry about how I’ve treated you like as if you weren’t in the room. I’m so sorry I ignored you and didn’t put you first and didn’t realize what you were going through. That’s a mistake I won’t make again. I feel like I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but…I realized that…that I also never stopped loving you.” Jeremiah apologized sincerely as a tear rolled down his cheek. As he explained everything, I started to remember a little bit even though it was still a blur. I felt embarrassed that I vented to him about how I’ve been feeling the night before and I didn’t wanna drag him into my problems. But when he said that he also never stopped loving me, I widened my eyes and looked at him in surprise.
“I…Oh my God, I feel so embarrassed for my behavior. I’m sorry. I’m sorry that I dragged you into my problems. But…But what about Belly? You love her, don’t you?” I asked, unsure if he was just playing me if a part of him is gonna feel something for Belly and I didn’t want him to choose between me and her. But I was unaware that he already made a decision.
“Yeah, about that, I thought I felt something for her since…last summer when I saw her new glow up and when she first brought you to Cousins for the first time…I thought I was done for. Like, I really felt something for her, but…when I met you and bonded with you and also she’s always gonna love Conrad, even if she won’t admit it to herself…I realized I was lying to myself. I thought I liked her, but…Belly’s not like you, Y/N. You’re irreplaceable. And I’m so sorry that I didn’t see that sooner. Ending things between us was a mistake. I miss what you and I had just as much as you do. And…I don’t know if you can ever forgive me, but I—” Jeremiah said honestly to me as he took my hand. But, I was actually proud of him for finally making his decision. And I just hoped that Belly would soon decide who she truly wants, too, and I hoped it would be Conrad she’d choose because they were actually good together, even though they were opposites.
So, as Jeremiah kept talking, I immediately cut off him off by quickly leaning in and kissing him on the lips, taking him by surprise until he kissed me back. Our kiss was passionate, loving, and tender. His lips just felt so soft and smooth and he was a very good kisser. Then, we pulled away as we gazed in each other’s eyes, his bright blue eyes staring into my Y/EC.
“So…does…does that mean you…forgive me?” Jeremiah asked while he was still in shock from me making the first move and kissing him.
“Of course I forgive you, you lovable doofus.” I responded while smirking and tousling Jeremiah’s golden curls, messing his hair up and making him laugh.
“Hey!” Jeremiah whined playfully through his laughter before flipping his short golden curly hair, making it still look the same as it did before. I giggled before he smirked and tickled me on my waist as revenge from when I untidied his hair.
I squealed and laughed and squirmed around as he tickled me. Then I waved my hands up in surrender.
“Okay, okay! I give! I surrender!” I protested through my laughter before Jeremiah stopped tickling me and smirked. Then he leaned down as I was laying down on my back on the sleeping bag and we giggled again before we shared another tender, loving kiss.
I felt my heart beating out of my chest. I was so ecstatic and relieved that I was actually back together with Jeremiah! I felt as if the darkness inside me has been taken away and then the light has risen inside me again.
I am Team Jeremiah, but that doesn’t mean I hate Conrad. However, I find it very hard to feel any sympathy for him: an essay.
I truly hope Conrad finds happiness. I just don’t think he and Belly are right for each other. And no, I haven’t read the books (you can read my feelings on that argument in another post I’ve done lol), so I’m just going off the show.
I am Team Jeremiah, I make no secret of it. But that’s because he is just the better choice for Belly. Not because he is better than Conrad, full stop. They both have their flaws. Should Jeremiah have made out with his brothers ex girlfriend like that, without at least talking to him first? Hell no. But come on - the guy tried to resist. He tried so hard. Belly kept pushing. And let’s remember what Conrad said to Belly at the start of the season after they kissed - ‘Do you want to be with him?’ ‘Being with you is all I’ve ever wanted.’ ‘Okay so be with me then.’
Belly choosing Conrad over Jeremiah was all that mattered back then, not how it affected anyone else, even though she was quasi-dating his brother for most of the summer. He didn’t give a fuck about Jeremiah and if it wasn’t for Belly saying no, he would have flaunted her immediately, even knowing she had kissed Jere a few times. When he asked Jeremiah for his blessing, I don’t believe he did that for any other reason than Belly would continue to distance herself from him until she believed Jere was over it. Conrad did not go to Jeremiah to make sure he truly was okay. He was ticking a box for Belly. Jeremiah was quite obviously not okay with it but Conrad chose to ignore that because he wanted Belly. We saw that in what he told Belly about it afterwards. He took the parts of the conversation that suited his narrative and the outcome he wanted, and he ran with it. And it worked. Jeremiah got hurt, and Conrad didn’t care, because he had Belly.
Their relationship wasn’t this epic love story. I still don’t understand where it came from. I understand Belly’s crush. But when and how and why did Conrad start loving her? The writers of the show seemed to just say ‘he just does’ and we are supposed to say ‘okay yeah sound makes sense.’ I just don’t understand the timeline. Besides that though… Look, I understand and empathise with the fact that his mom was dying while they were dating, and that he was struggling with his mental health. It was a lot for an 18 year old to deal with. (Of course, Jeremiah was dealing with it, too, but Conrad stans conveniently forget that). But Belly suffered in that relationship because of it, and no one should have to do that. To me, it seemed like she was always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Waiting for him to pull away. Scared. Maybe Conrad wasn’t going to break up with her at prom, and she jumped the gun, but it says a lot about how she was feeling that she immediately assumed that. A relationship shouldn’t be like that.
Jeremiah, though… from day one he was open and honest with her. He asked her straight up if she could ever love him like she did Conrad and she said YES. Belly said herself - Jeremiah is always there when she needs him. That’s what you need in a life partner. And fuck me, the passion they have. A perfect blend of supportive and passionate. Tie that man DOWN. He is supportive, he defends her, he speaks his mind, he is honest and reliable (the only time we saw him ‘let her down’ in any way was when he missed the dance at the Deb Ball and jeez, he had a damn good reason so no one can blame him). He makes her laugh. They can have fun together, but can also have the serious conversations. I married my best friend and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s honestly amazing to know you have that person who truly sees you, loves and supports you. Who is your comfort. Jeremiah is that for Belly. Honestly, I could go on and on about how Jeremiah is the perfect match for her - and the chemistry between Gavin and Lola definitely adds to it, but it isn’t the only factor - but everyone has probably given up reading by now…
Both boys have been dealt a shit hand, losing their mother. Both boys have made mistakes and have flaws. But they both have incredibly good qualities, too. Personally, I just think that Jeremiah is more suited to Belly, and they will have a happy, healthy relationship.
Also, the way she kissed him back in that episode… I’m sorry but there’s no way she’s not jumping his bones when they start officially dating. It wouldn’t make sense to me. She was smiling against his mouth and knotting her fingers in his hair, and it was ‘Wattpad level hot’, as Taylor would say. Considering she’s already done the deed, I can’t see any logical way for the writers to incorporate a ‘no intimacy’ storyline for them. Especially after that scene in particular, but also their first kiss in the pool back in season one, and the booby fondling in the car - WHERE BELLY STRAIGHT UP SAID SHE WAS NOT NERVOUS BECAUSE IT WAS JEREMIAH. Sorry, but let’s be real - there’s not a chance in hell those two are not banging the brains out of each other. And good on them. So I hope that is a change made to the books. Furthermore, show-Jeremiah cheating? I cannot see it happening. I really really hope it doesn’t.
IF Bonrad must be endgame, then please, Jenny Han, I beg of you to right your wrongs and not assassinate Jeremiah’s character to reach that ending. There are better ways to do it. But I maintain that the better choice for Belly is Jeremiah. And Conrad should meet someone new who is more emotionally mature and able to deal with his very obvious mental health problems. Someone he feels he can open up to about them. Because, as a sufferer myself, you need that support. Belly doesn’t provide that for Conrad and, as a result, Conrad doesn’t give Belly what she needs either.
One last parting thought - what the fuck happened to Jeremiah and Steven’s friendship? Jeremiah told Steven how much he cared for Belly in season one. Why did literally no one listen to him? And how did no one see it in the way his entire personality seemed to shift in season two. He’s lost his sparkle. YES most of that is because of his mom, but is everyone really that blind to him? No one notices that poor guy. He’s completely overshadowed by Conrad in every aspect. Everyone just expects Jeremiah to roll over and let everyone else have their happy ending while he gets trampled on because he’ll ‘just get over it’. Come on. WRITERS - DO BETTER. There is too much phenomenal acting talent in this show to let bad writing and tropes ruin it.
In conclusion, I haven’t written this much on one topic since I did my degree and I am obsessed with this show. Goodbye.
Maybe it’s becuase I’m 26, been married for 4 years, and is a mom that I can’t be team toxic relationships. I’ve had my fair share of Conrad/Belly relationships. They broke me. I was always feeling desperate. Always chasing a fantasy of a guy that wasn’t real. This is what I’ve seen so far in the these two season of the Summer I turned pretty. I haven’t read the books, but I don’t have time yet with a toddler. Im strictly speaking about the show. I was rubbed the wrong way when Steven said Belly needs “someone to challenge her. Jeremiah doesn’t do that.” That’s bothered me. I married my Jeremiah. The way Jeremiah treats belly is how my husband is. From the moment, he asked me out he pursued me. His intentions and feelings were laid out clearly. His passion for me was driven by a force of love I can’t describe. Honestly, that’s marriage material. Marriage is a challenge, relationships are a challenge. You don’t need a toxic relationship to challenge you as a person. You need the right person to love you unconditionally and unashamedly to challenge growth. That kind of love challenges you to grow for that person. Love won’t always be fireworks as she states I can’t see myself with someone I don’t have fireworks with. My husband is calm and steady. He encourages me to be me but also gently brings me back to earth. I feel safe. Every other relationship I felt anxiety and fireworks as they say. When I first kissed my husband I felt safety, at home, and roaring mutual passion. (Those Team Jelly kisses are something else!) I want to see this show navigate what healthy relationships look like and encourage them. I’m tired of the overly glorified toxicity. That’s why I think season three needs to change the ending to her and Jeremiah.
Jeremiah Fisher x Conklin Sibling
*moments of months with Jeremiah until next Summer -takes place between the first and second seasons*
.Conrad sending you videos of Jeremiah sulking in the backseat as everyone leaves Cousins
.Late night phone calls every night till school starts again, then again the first week Conrad goes off to college
.Calling you any time he misses Conrad because he’s too stubborn to talk to him
"You know you could just call him"
"Yeah, but he’s not as pretty to look at"
.You groan at how sweet he is and tell him to stop or you’re hanging up
.Jere making it onto the football team and showing up at your house the same day to tell you
.Laurel over hearing your excited voices in the hallway and coming to congratulate Jere
.Making him stay for dinner, making Steven drive to Costco to get a cake
"Its a celebration! we need cake" she stated
"Why me" Steven moaned
"This is what happens when you wont let anyone else drive your car" Belly smiled at him with mock sweetness
Steven rolled his eyes at her "This house is gonna fall into ruin when I leave for Princeton"
"And don’t forget the candles" you called out as the door slams shut behind him
.Steven brings leftover fourth of July sparklers instead
"Its what Susannah would have done" he shrugs to Laurel and she nods in the way you know she's holding back tears.
.Laurel tells Jere to stay the night cause its getting too late
"but on the couch..and no funny business" she says looking at the two of you
.She gives Jere a hug, you notice its longer than usual, before she heads up to bed
."She thinks I’m going to break like Connie"
"She’s just worried Jere, my mom loves you"
"Do you?" he smirks
.Neither of you have said it yet, not since Jeremiah had that night at the boardwalk
You lean up on your tip toes and put your lips gently on his
‘Sometimes’ you say pulling away and smirking back at him
.Jere sneaking up to your room at 2am and curling up next to you
.Pulling your hips back into him. You press up closer next to him and stifle a laugh as he groans into your hair
‘I’m not gonna be responsible for what happens if you keep doing that’ he whispers
.You turn around to face him, he’s still golden in the dark
."Will you come to my games?" he sounds like he’s scared to ask, scared of the response
‘Every one’ you say
.You know his Dad wont and Susannah’s too sick now
.Jeremiah gets all shy and smiley the first time you come to his game
.You’re wearing your cheer outfit, wrong colours, but you’ve got his number painted on your cheek
.Thats all he can focus on, that and how short your skirt is and
"how come I’ve never seen you wear this before" he says pinching the hem of your skirt, his fingertips brushing an inch higher up your thigh
"I’ve been a cheerleader since freshmen year" you shove him away as he tries to wrap his arms around you
"Not mine" he says pulling you towards him and pinning you against his car door
"You think you could keep this on for me tonight"Jere whispers into your neck
"I’m going home Jeremiah" you laugh pushing him back enough to kiss him
He grins at you.
.You show up to every game like you promised, sometimes with Belly and Taylor, sometimes with Laurel, sometimes alone
.Always wearing his numbers
.Always holding up a dumb sign making him laugh every time he looks over at you
.Jere looked amazing in his football gear, he'd gained more muscle from training and Laurel's never ending cooking, one thing she was gonna do, was take care of Susannah's boys. He played amazing too, almost as good as Conrad and you'd wished his dad would come to just one of these games
.But Jere had lost some of his sunshine, that 'golden boy sparkle' fading with every doctors appointment
.Jere picking you up and spinning you around, leaving kisses all over your face whether they won or lost and for a moment he was the old Jeremiah again, the one without the weight of a sick mother and absent father
.Wrapping up in blankets at his games when the leaves start changing colour
.Hugging him in it when he walks of the field
.Walking the long way back to the parking lot, with pink noses and chilled fingers intertwined, letting go only to race through piles of brown leaves
"Its not about how fast you get through them its about how many you crunch" he stated matter of fact, ignoring the amused look on your face
.Jere could never wait till you got inside the car to start kissing you, he'd pin you up against whatever surface was closest, one hand gripping your waist the other resting on your neck
."Opening the door takes 2 seconds" you smiled, still trying to catch your breath
."Sorry" he shrugged "haven't seen my girlfriend all week" he grinned down at you
.Making out with him for 'five more minutes' had turned into 2 hours trying and failing to keep his hands off you and eating leftover lunches, while whatever song of the week played on repeat in the background
"Its too late to drive" he said
"And who's fault is that...I've got to get home J" you sighed
"Let me drive you" he said, shifting your weight on him and letting his head rest back against the drivers seat
"No, then how will you get back?" you asked softly, leaning into him, leaving a trail of kisses on his neck
"Then stay" he tightened his grip on you, not wanting to lose the feeling of you on him
"I can't" you said
.His eyes plead with you and you silently cursed how far apart you lived
"Your mom's already here"
"Exactly why I can't stay Jere" you said resting your back against the steering wheel "She'll want me at home with Belly"
"Belly's not even at home with Belly" Jere let out an exasperated sigh
.You laughed and leaned back into him, foreheads pressing against each other
"You're right, take me to yours then boyfriend" you smiled, biting your lip
.Jere bumped his nose against yours
"Five more minutes" he whispered against your lips already pulling you back into a kiss
《 previous | masterlist | next 》
every summer, my family and i would pack up and travel to cousins beach. it's tradition, one that i looked forward to all year long. we have been going here since i was a baby. since before i was even born. the summer house belonged to my mom's best friend, jina, and we shared it with her family. all year long, i would count the days until i'm at that beach, at that house. the summer house is made up of lots of things. the beach, the swimming pool late at night, movie nights with the moms. but the boys. the boys most of all.
jina has two boys- heeseung and jake. heeseung's dad died before he was even born and eventually, jina remarried and had jake with mr. sim. heeseung was the older one, by a year and a half. he had that honey type of tan that made him look breathtaking and a smirky mouth that i always found my self staring at. sometimes even imagining what it would be like to kiss it. he was everything i wasn't- confident, outgoing, and effortlessly cool. jake, though- he was my friend. he's the type of boy who still hugged his mother and held her hand, not ever being embarrassed. he was way flirty though. he had that puppy golden retriever like personality. he’s easygoing, playful, quick to laugh. the one all the girls at school like.
it's the same every year, and i loved it. the house was my world. as if winter didn’t even count. summer was what mattered. like i don’t really begin living until june, until i’m at that beach, in that house.
for me, everything good, everything magical happens between the months of june and august.
"chae, i thought you came here to help me pack." i laughed and jokingly rolled my eyes as chaewon continued to yap about boys, parties, balala.
"fine. here's a tip: don't bring that speedo. it doesn't do shit for your new boobs!!"
"kim chaewon!!" i exclaimed, nudging her playfully.
kim chaewon, my bestest and longest friend, was the literal definition of the it girl. she's a natural flirt, always drop dead gorgeous she made heads turn wherever she went. she's effortlessly popular, attracting guys like moths to a flame, boyfriend after boyfriend. her short, blonde hair, sparkling eyes, flawless skin, and perfect body made her the center of attention wherever she went. being around her was like being in the shadow of a celebrity, and sometimes, it really made me feel invisible.
"i'm just saying, babes," chaewon says with a mischievous grin. "if you wanna get heeseung's attention this summer, you gotta pack cute things. don't bring a swimsuit that looks like you're trying out for the swim team."
i tackled her with a laugh, and we both broke into a fit of giggles. my room was a mess, clothes and belongings scattered everywhere as i tried to pack my suitcase. posters of my favorite artists all over the walls, and fairy lights and vines hung around my bed, giving the room a cozy feel despite the chaos.
"y/n!! we’re leaving in the next 10 minutes!!!" my mom’s voice echoed from downstairs.
"okay, okay, before you go," chaewon said, her eyes sparkling with curiosity, " you have to tell me your wish for this summer. like, what is the one thing you want to happen." she looked at me wiggling her eyebrows.
i shrugged nonchalantly, "i don't know." even though the truth was far from that. i've been wishing for the same thing every summer, hoping it might come true someday.
chaewon snorted in disbelief. "you little liar. yes, you do. you want a hot make-out with lee heeseung!! you want his tongue in your mouth you dirty little slut!!"
"shut up, chae!" i blushed furiously, shoving her away playfully.
"i'm just saying!! like, you've been in love with him since we were 12. it's kinda obvious."
"whatever," i replied, trying to sound nonchalant even though i felt a pang of disappointment. "he doesn't even see me in that way at all no matter what i do."
"girl, he'll see you alright. whether he wants to or not. look at you—" chaewon gestured to me with a dramatic flair. "you look a lot different than last summer, y/n. i mean, just look at you."
her words lingered as i glanced at my reflection, wondering if this summer might be different after all. the thought was both exciting and nerve-wracking. chaewon was heading to madrid for the next few weeks until the end of june just in time for my birthday at cousins.
"do you really think he'll notice?" i asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
she walked over and put her arm over my shoulder, giving me a reassuring smile. "trust me, y/n. he will. and if he doesn't, he's a fool."
just then, sunghoon peeked into my room. "hey, are you two done with your little girly shit? we're gonna be late."
"almost, sunghoon!" i called back, giving chaewon a meaningful look.
"okay, y/n. you got this. and don't forget, have fun! it's summer. anything can happen."
i smiled, feeling a wave of determination. "thanks, chae. i'll miss you."
"i'll miss you too," she said, pulling me into a hug. "but don't worry. we'll catch up soon, and you can tell me what happens with you-know-who while i'm gone."
as she left, i felt a mix of emotions. excitement for the summer ahead, a little nervous to see heeseung, and a lingering sense of being overshadowed by chaewon's dazzling presence. but maybe, just maybe, this summer would be different. maybe this summer, i'll finally step out of her shadow and into the light, my own light.
with a deep breath, i zipped up my suitcase, ready to face whatever the summer had in store.
as i reflected on my feelings for heeseung and the upcoming summer, i couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation.
"alright, let's go," i said to sunghoon, determination and excitement in my eyes.
i loved this drive, where the salty air started to tickle my nose, signaling we were nearing the town. seeing the familiar streets and the old diner again felt like coming home after an endless journey, memories flooding my mind of past summers.
as we pull into a small gas station, sunghoon parked the car to fill up the tank. my mom and i get out to stretch our legs, heading into the store for snacks. the scent of gasoline mixed with the salty sea breeze created a unique aroma. the gas station was small and a bit rundown, but it had a certain nostalgia with its faded signs and ancient gumball machine by the door.
inside, the flourescent lights flickered slightly, and the cool air gave me a relieving welcome from the heat outside. i grab a coke, hot cheetos, sour patch kids, and nerds clusters, my hands overflowing with sugary and spicy treats. the shelves are packed with a wide selection of snacks and drinks, the hum of the refridgerator units providing a constant background noise.
mom watches me with an amused expression as she hands over her card to pay, then heads to the bathroom. as i stuff a handful of cheetos into my mouth, i catch the cashier’s eye. he's smiling at me, and i glance around, wondering if there's someone behind me he could be looking at. but the aisle is empty, and his attention is undeniably on me.
at school, boys barely notice me. chaewon was always the center of attention, always drawing people in with her charm and looks. i had learned to be okay with just being… there. but here, in this tiny gas station, i felt seen.
i make my way to the counter, still munching on Cheetos, and the cashier’s gaze lingers on me.
"hey, are you new this summer? i'm jay," he says with a friendly grin.
"me? no, i've been coming to cousins since i was a baby."
"i definitely would've remembered you. thought i knew every pretty girl in town."
i feel a blush creeping up, and i quickly wipe cheese powder off my face with the back of my hand. his attention was flattering but it was also unfamiliar.
"so, are you going to the bonfire tonight? first of the season," jay asks, his grin widening.
be cool, y/n, i remind myself silently.
"oh yeah um… maybe."
my mother returns from the bathroom and gives me a curious look, which i pretend to not see. she gently brushes my hair out of my face lovingly.
"after we get settled, do you want to go to whale of a tale with me so I can pre-sign stock before the signing tomorrow night? remember how you used to sit on my lap when I did signings there? you insisted on drawing a little whale on every book I signed."
"um no, i don't remember that." i admit, feeling a bit embarrassed as we stand at the counter. my mom, yeji, had just come out with her latest book, and it's clear to see how excited she is for the signing. she's so passionate about her work, and i admire her for it.
"i’ll make you a deal. i’ll let you be in charge of picking out tonight’s dessert if you come with me and keep me company."
jay looks at me expectantly as we start walking away.
"so, i’ll see you later?" he asks.
i push mom out the store, avoiding jay's gaze. "what’s later?" she asks.
"nothing." i mumble, and we head back to the car where sunghoon is scrolling on his phone. my brother is about to be a senior after this summer and will soon be leaving for college. it feels like everything is changing too quickly.
when we arrived at the summer house, jake comes running to us with his arms wide open. he put both his arms up in the air and yelled, “sunghoon!”
sunghoon and mom get out of the car, hugging jake tightly. i follow, dragging my bag behind me. as I step out, i spot him—heeseung, coming from the pool gate. time seems to slow as our eyes meet. he looks different, almost like he’s changed since I last saw him.
jake does a double-take when he notices me, his confusion obvious as if he doesn't even recognize me. he starts to walk over but hesitates when he sees heeseung approaching me.
heeseung stands close, his breath warm on my face. his hair is freshly dyed red, still wet from swimming. he smiles, and then he pulls me into a hug.
"i liked you better with glasses," he murmurs, his lips brushing my ear.
i push him away slightly, trying to hide my surprise. "well, too bad. i like me better without them."
we share a moment of silence, just smiling at each other. the way he looks at me feels new, intense. there was something familiar in his gaze, but also something more, something i can't quite place.
our moment was quickly interrupted when jake suddenly picked me up in a tight hug. "y/nnie, i missed you so much! i've been waiting all day for you." he ruffles my hair when he puts me back down.
"hi, jakey." i smile up at him. he has grown so much taller since last summer.
"wow y/n, something seems different about you." he kept staring at me as if he didn't know who I was.
"don't be silly, jake. it's probably the contacts," i reply, self-consciously touching my face. do I really look that different without my glasses?
"nope no, you just look different, you know. you came back all grown up!" jake insists, his eyes filled with admiration.
heeseung watched our exchange silently, his expression unreadable. there was a tension between us, something unspoken but noticeable. jake’s admiration made me feel self-conscious, and i wondered if heeseung noticed it too.
as we settled into the house, the familiar sounds and smells of summer surrounded us. the cicadas buzzing, the scent of the ocean mixed with the pine trees, and the distant laughter of kids playing on the beach. this place held so many memories, both good and bad. it was here that our parents had decided to divorce, and the pain of that summer still lingered. but it was also a place of healing and new beginnings.
after unloading the car, i headed up to my room. as i started unpacking my things, my mind wandered off. the way heeseung had looked at me, the way jake had seemed to notice me—it was different. i let out a long breath, feeling as if i've been holding it in for an eternity. my heart was beating so loudly that I could hear its rhythmic thumping in my ears. everything was the same but not. they had looked at me like I was a real girl, not just somebody’s little sister. chaewon was right; maybe there was something different about me this summer.
i lay on my bed and let out a deep sigh, sinking into the familiar softness of the mattress. the room was scented with a faint hint of lavender from the sachets jina always put in our drawers. the bedspread, with its texture of soft cotton, felt cool against my back. the beach-themed decorations, seashells, and calming blues. i tossed my belongings into the drawers absentmindedly, the sound of fabric adding to the quiet of the room.
jina entered the room with a warm smile. "oh my gosh, look at you, y/n! you've always been lovely, honey, but oh, look at you now. you've blossomed into such a beautiful young woman."
her words made me feel both embarrassed and touched. jina had always been like a second mother to me, her presence comforting and her praise genuine. "thanks, jina," i said softly.
she hugged me tightly. "i’m so proud of you. and remember, you’re beautiful inside and out."
when jina went back downstairs, just a few minutes later, the creak of the door caught my attention, and i turned to see my best friends—ning ning, niki, and beomgyu—coming in.
"y/n! oh my gosh girl, i've missed you so much!" ning ning exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she rushed over to envelop me in a hug. her perfume, a sweet floral scent, filled the air around us.
beomgyu, always the funny one, grinned teasingly, "damn girl, look at you, all grown up and mysterious! what’s with the new look?"
niki, who's mostly quiet but the sweetest guy ever, gave me an appreciative nod. “can’t say I don’t approve.”
i laughed, feeling a wave of comfort wash over me. "thanks, guys. it's really good to see you too."
as we began catching up, sharing stories from the past year, i couldn’t help but glance out the window occasionally, hoping to catch a glimpse of heeseung. my thoughts kept drifting back to that intense moment earlier.
"so, when's chae coming?" beomgyu asked, his voice tinged with hopeful curiosity. he's had the hots for chaewon for as long as I could remember, though she’d never shown him much interest, always saying he wasn’t her type.
"oh yeah, she's at madrid with her parents." i replied. "she won't be here until before my birthday."
ning nudged me playfully. "so, what's this i hear about you having a crush on heeseung? tell!"
i felt my face heat up. "what? no! who told you that?"
"jake mentioned it," niki said with a smirk. he said you were acting all weird around heeseung earlier."
i groaned, covering my face with my hands. "great, now jake's spreading rumors."
"come on, y/n, we know you," beomgyu teased. "just admit it already."
my friends and I continued our conversation, the atmosphere light and full of laughter. we talked about everything that had happened over the past year, from ning ning's new painting hobby to niki's adventures in photography and beomgyu's latest pranks.
"do you guys remember that time chaewon convinced beomgyu to dress up as a mermaid for the beach party?" ning ning laughed, causing everyone to burst into giggles.
"yeah! and he actually did it!" i added, recalling the memory vividly. beomgyu's crush on chaewon had always been a source of endless amusement for us.
after a while, we decided to head down to the pool. maybe a swim could help escape the thoughts swirling in my mind. the pool area was just as i remembered it: crystal-clear water shimmering under the golden sun, surrounded by lush greenery and the faint aroma of blooming flowers that jina tended to daily. the hot tub bubbling invitingly nearby.
the sight that greeted me was exactly what I had missed: jake, splashing around with an energy that was as infectious as ever that made it impossible not to smile at, and heeseung lounging at the edge, his red hair now dried and messy, looking relaxed and at ease. (and so fucking hot.)
i walked out, feeling a bit self-conscious in my new bikini chaewon had picked out (that was very much revealing). trying to act casual, i walked towards the pool. jake's eyes lit up when he spotted me and waved enthusiastically. “y/nnie! Come join us!”
i waved back, giving a small smile as i approached the pool. heeseung’s gaze met mine once again, and the corner of his mouth curved up into a small, knowing smile. it sent a shiver down my spine, but i quickly tried to shake off the feeling.
"hey, heeseung," i said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"hey," he replied, his tone soft with a hint of something unspoken that made my heart race. "you look great. really."
i felt my cheeks flush at the compliment, but i managed to respond with a casual, "thanks. i guess the summer heat agrees with me."
jake gave me and ning ning a playful shove towards the pool. "come on, guys! swim with me!"
we laughed and jumped into the cool water, pulling niki and beomgyu in with us, feeling a refreshing contrast to the warm summer air. the sound of water splashing and the smell of sunscreen filled the air as we swam, played, and laughed as if no time had passed at all. we had races, played pool volleyball, and even had a contest to see who could do the best cannonball.
amidst the fun, i couldn’t ignore the moments when heeseung’s gaze would find mine, lingering with an intensity that made me wonder what was going on in that pretty little head of his. he would swim over occasionally, subtly bumping into me or giving a compliment that left my heart fluttering.
as the sun began to set, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, we gathered around the poolside, sharing snacks and stories. the atmosphere was filled with the warm, comforting laughter of friends. ning ning was lounging in the pool chair next to mine. "y/n, how was your sophomore year? i want to know everything. you know, any boys we should know about." she wiggled her eyebrows at me, a playful glint in her eye.
i nodded, feeling the comfort of old friends around me. "well, there’s not much to tell. just the usual school stuff and a few new hobbies. and nope there wasn't really any guys."
beomgyu eyed me curiously. "nahhh, something interesting must have happened. come on, spill!"
i chuckled, appreciating their interest. as i began to recount some of my favorite moments from the past year, i noticed heeseung quietly listening, his eyes never straying far from me. there was something in his gaze that felt almost protective, as if he was hanging on every word i said.
the evening carried on with more laughter and stories, the transition from day to night marked by the soft glow of fairy lights being turned on. the stars began to twinkle above, and the warm summer night wrapped us in a comforting embrace.
as the conversation continued, i caught heeseung's eye again. this time, he gave me a smile that seemed to hold a thousand words. my thoughts wandered to the past year and my feelings for him. was there something more between us, or was it just my imagination? the uncertainty gnawed at me, but for now, i just wanted to enjoy the moment and everyone's company.
the summer night wrapped around the pool with a comforting embrace, its surface shimmering softly from the gentle glow of string lights that wrapped around the trees above. the air was alive with the hum of crickets and the occasional splash from the pool.
at the elegant outdoor dining table, the bouillabaisse gleamed invitingly under the ambient light. aach bowl was brimming with vibrant colors—chunks of fish, mussels, and shrimp mixed together in a rich, saffron-infused broth. the aroma of garlic, tomatoes, and herbs traveled through the air, going with the soft scents of the night. alongside the bouillabaisse were platters of fresh baguettes, bowls of crisp garden salad, and trays of roasted vegetables, their edges caramelized to perfection. the table was a lively scene of post-swim hunger, surrounded by friends and family savoring the meal and each other’s company.
jina, dressed in a flowing floral sundress, sat at the end, her glass of wine a steady companion as she observed the lively conversation around her. her eyes sparkled with delight as she watched the group interact.
“i can't believe you guys are working this summer,” ning ning exclaimed, her eyes wide with surprise. “i thought the only plans you had were beach days and parties.”
jake grinned, his smile almost as bright as the pool lights. “yeah, well, change of plans, ning. sunghoon and i are trying something new this summer. gonna get those racks.”
beomgyu nodded, his eyes flicking between Jake and Sunghoon. “it sounds like a good idea. both of you could take a break from hoeing around.”
niki raised an eyebrow, glancing at heeseung, noticing his quiet demeanor. “and what about you, heeseung? any big summer plans?”
heeseung shrugged casually, his voice low. “i’m just focusing on myself this summer. no big plans. just taking it easy.”
jina leaned in with a sparkle of excitement in her eyes. “oh, speaking of plans, y/n! I almost forgot to tell you! I managed to get you an invitation to the debutante ball.”
a murmur of surprise passed through the group. i looked at jina, confusion evident on everyone's faces and probably mine. “wait, is that the big dance where you dress up and curtsy?”
jina crossed her arms, a determined look on her face. “i really think you’d enjoy it. tt’s not just about dressing up. it’s a chance to meet people and do something different.”
beomgyu looked intrigued. “what even is a debutante ball?”
jina smiled and took a sip of her wine. “it’s kind of like a fancy coming-out party. it’s where girls are formally introduced to society, and it’s a pretty big social event.”
ning ning’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “it sounds fun! you get to wear beautiful dresses and dance with cute boys.”
i could feel my face twisting into a frown. “i don’t know… i’m really not into all the etiquette stuff.”
jina leaned in, her tone encouraging. “it’s not just about etiquette. it’s about growing up and finding your place in the world.”
heeseung, glancing over from the corner of his eye, added with a hint of rudeness, "the whole deb scene is bullshit. it’s for sheep."
sunghoon, not missing a beat, added, “yeah, maybe the debutante ball would do you some good.”
i shot my brother and heeseung a look before turning back to jina with a hesitant nod. “i’ll think about it. but don’t get your hopes up, okay?”
jina's smile was warm and understanding. “that’s all I ask.”
my mom turned to me, concern all over her face. “are you sure you want to do this, honey, it doesn't really sound like you? but, whatever you decide, i’m sure you’ll make the best of it. and if you do go, we’ll all be here to support you.”
i smiled at my mother’s supportive stance. “thanks, mom. i’ll definitely think about it.”
ning ning's excitement returned. “omg, you’ll have me and chaewon to help you with your outfits, your dress! omg, your escort too! it’s gonna be so much fun.”
as the conversation shifted back to lighter topics, the group continued to enjoy their meal. laughter and chatter filled the warm air, going with the calm sounds of the night. the tension around the debutante ball eased, replaced by the warmth of the evening and the comfort of shared moments.
i can't help but feel a mix of anticipation and dread about the debutante ball. would it really be a chance for me to grow and find my place, or just another event where i felt out of place? the future seemed uncertain, but at least i know i had the support of my family and friends.
when ning ning, beomgyu, and niki left to go home, i walked back outside from cleaning up dinner, the cool night air brushing against my skin. the pool was still and silent. i stopped short when i spotted heeseung sitting on the edge of the pool, a joint dangling from his lips and a beer in hand. i'd never seen him do either of these things before—so relaxed, so detached. but damn, he looked so good. especially with that cherry red hair.
i stood there for a moment, taking in the scene, before putting my towel down and diving into the pool with a splash. when i rose up to the surface, i took a deep breath, trying to shake off the surprise, and swam towards him. the water felt refreshing on my skin, a big contrast to the tension building inside me.
“hey, heeseung,” i called out, attempting to sound casual despite the nervousness i feel fluttering in my chest.
he glanced down at me, his expression unreadable. he took a slow drag from the joint, his eyes lingering on mine, and then took a swig from his beer, all the while keeping his eyes locked on mine. the smoke curled around him, mixing with the scent of chlorine.
“hey, y/n,” he replied, his voice surprisingly calm.
i tried to keep my voice steady as i swam closer to him, but my curiosity got the better of me. “i thought you said smoking pot changes the way your brain processes information.”
he raised an eyebrow, taking another drag and blowing out a cloud of smoke. “so does your cell phone.”
“you said marijuana messes with white matter,” i called out, trying to make sense of what I was seeing.
heeseung tilted his head slightly, a smirk forming on his lips. “do you even know what white matter is?”
i moved closer, my hand brushing against the edge of the pool. “you said our brains are still developing and that—”
“god, do you memorize every single thing I ever said?” he interrupted, his tone a mix of amusement and frustration.
i paused, treading water, considering my response. “get over yourself.”
heeseung gaze softened, though he still held his casual demeanor. “look, i said a lot of stuff. and i’m not an athlete anymore.”
a flashback of heeseung in his element went through my mind, scoring touchdowns and leading his team. i remember the determination in his eyes, the confidence in his stride. seeing him now, so different, was unsettling.
“well, i still think you should quit,” i said, trying to sound firm despite the vulnerability i felt.
heeseung’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “what will you give me if i do?”
what the fuck-
the air between us suddenly felt charged with tension. i hesitated, my mind racing as I tried to find the right words. “n-nothing,” i said finally, turning away slightly. “you should quit for yourself.”
for a moment, the tension lingered in the air. our eyes met again, but just like that, the little spark between us felt like it had been extinguished. i got tired of treading water for so long and sat up on the edge next to where heeseung sat, the joint between his fingers and the beer bottle nearly empty. he seemed lost in thought, but then he looked at me with a hint of concern.
“why are you considering this debutante thing?” he asked suddenly, breaking the silence.
i was taken aback by the question. “i don’t know,” i said honestly. “it’s not like I have anything else going on.”
heeseung shook his head slightly, taking a slow drag from his joint. “but it’s not you. don’t let my mom make you into her little doll just because she never had a daughter.”
i kicked my legs in the water, gazing up at the moon. “i don’t mind it. sometimes I wish I was her daughter.”
heeseung’s eyes softened. “you’re better off with yeji, trust me.”
i watched him take another hit, the smoke curling around his face. “why are you acting so different?”
heeseung looked startled by my blunt question. it was always a little disarming, the way I could cut through his defenses. “i—i’m not,” he stammered.
“yes, you are,” i insisted. “what's going on? you know you can tell me.”
heeseung’s cool facade began to slip, his eyes reflecting the struggle behind his calm exterior. i could tell he wanted to open up, to share the weight he had been carrying. his mouth opened slightly, as if he was about to speak, but then—
sunghoon and jake burst out onto the porch, dressed up and ready for a night out. the sudden intrusion broke the moment between us.
"wow, look at you two,” sunghoon teased, his eyes darting between us. “looks like you’re having quite the heart-to-heart.”
jake, always the more light-hearted of the two, grinned. he looked over at me. “come on, we’re heading out to the bonfire. don’t you want to join us?”
"um yea-"
"um no. don't you have your little movie night with the moms? they're getting it ready for you, y/n." sunghoon butts in, clearly not wanting me to come with.
sunghoon and jake then started talking about the party, pulling heeseung with them towards the car. i stole one last glance at heeseung. there was something more he wanted to say, something he was holding back. it was clear that the conversation we’d started wasn’t over.
as they left, i felt a mix of frustration and concern. what was heeseung hiding? and why did it feel like our connection was slipping away just when i wanted-no, needed-it most? the night air felt heavier, now charged with unanswered questions and lingering tension.
i dried up and walked back inside, rejecting the movie night, saying i was tired. i laid in bed, wearing an oversized t-shirt, my eyes fixed on the familiar ceiling of the summer house. the room was dimly lit by the soft glow of my bedside lamp, casting long shadows on the walls. even from here you could hear the distant sound of waves crashing against the shore. my mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, each one more confusing than the last.
i grabbed my phone, the cold metal a stark contrast to the warmth of the room. hesitating for a moment, i finally decided to facetime chaewon. the call connected, and chaewon’s surprised face appeared on the screen, a makeup brush in hand. her background bustling with the organized chaos of her vanity, scattered with makeup products and jewelry.
"y/n? you never call me on the first night," chaewon said, raising an eyebrow, her expression a mix of curiosity and concern.
i avoided the question, my curiosity getting the best of me. "where are you going?"
"to dinner," chaewon replied, leaning closer to the screen. "what’s wrong?"
i sighed, twirling a strand of hair around my finger. "tonight, heeseung and i were talking by the pool, just the two of us. it felt… different."
"good different?!" chaewon’s excitement was through the roof. "see, i told you!"
"i don’t know," i continued, my voice uncertain. "jake and sunghoon came down, and they all just left to go to this thing at the beach."
"why didn't you go with them?" chaewon asked, her tone turning serious.
i hesitated, lying, "like i care about a beach bonfire. and sunghoon probably would've made a fit if i went with them."
"he doesn’t own the beach!" chaewon exclaimed, rolling her eyes.
"well, i did talk to this one guy at the gas station, and he mentioned it to me. jake also asked if i wanted to go with them," i admitted.
"see?! come on, girl. go have fun!"
"but, i don’t like that guy. or jake," i muttered.
"that’s not the point. heeseung will be there. go to the bonfire, get in his eyeline. let him see you all dressed up looking cute."
i mulled over the idea, my reluctance slowly fading. i sat up abruptly. "all right! shut up. i'll go."
chaewon looked into the camera, judging my attire. "is that what you’re wearing?"
"it’s fine! nobody dresses up for bonfires."
"how do you know when you’ve never even been to one?" chaewon challenged.
"i’ve seen what the guys wear!" i defended.
chaewon sighed dramatically. "look in your duffel bag. i gifted you my secret weapon. not to keep, obvs, just to borrow."
i opened the duffel bag, finding chaewon’s favorite body-con dress, tight as a second skin. "no way in hell."
"y/n. who got five promposals, you or me?"
my voice softened. "i didn’t even get one. people kept saying i look so different from last year, but not a single person asked me."
i held the dress against my body, glancing at my reflection with uncertainty. memories of last summer flooded back, the feeling of being invisible among the crowd, and the ache of not being noticed. but this summer, things felt different. heeseung seemed different.
gosh, ever since i got here, i just can't stop thinking about heeseung.
with a sigh, i then went to jina's room and rummaged through her drawers. i opened tubes of lipstick, tried one on, wiped it off, then tried another. opening the medicine cabinet, i noticed numerous prescription bottles but ignored them, focusing on the perfumes instead. i sprayed several before settling on one that smelled of jasmine and vanilla
wearing chaewon’s dress, i tiptoed down the stairs. the lights from the tv flickered in the dark living room, playing the famous hitchhiking scene from it happened one night. yeji and jina laughed together, their heads close, looking cozy on the couch.
i felt a pang of longing, tempted to stay and let this night be like every other first night at the summer house. but then it would be like every other first night at cousins beach. i took a deep breath and slipped out the back door unnoticed, the cool night air hitting my skin as I stepped into the unknown.
as i walked towards the beach, the scent of the sea grew stronger, mingling with the earthy aroma of the sand and the distant laughter of people gathering around the bonfire. i thought about heeseung and our conversation by the pool earlier. his smile, the way his eyes lit up when he talked—it all felt different, special even. but doubt eventually crept in, making me wonder if i was reading too much into it.
i reached the beach and saw the flickering flames of the bonfire in the distance. the sounds of the waves crashing, the crackling of the fire, and the soft murmur of conversations filled the air. my heart raced with a mix of excitement and nervousness. part of me wanted to turn back, to retreat into the safety of the summer house. but another part of me, the part that longed for something new, pushed me forward.
the beach was alive with a bonfire, a crowd of teens, and a keg. i felt out of place in chaewon’s tight dress, while the other girls wore cutoffs and crop tops. the waves crashed rhythmically, and the salty breeze tugged at my hair, making me shiver slightly.
i’m gonna kill chaewon, i thought, crossing my arms over my chest. the dress felt like a spotlight, drawing attention I didn't want.
i scanned the beach but didn’t see my brother, heeseung, or jake anywhere. feeling alone, i stood on the beach until jay, the guy from the gas station, spotted me. his eyes lit up, and he hurried over, a red solo cup in his hand, stumbling slightly on the uneven sand.
"whoa, where are you coming from?" he slurred, his breath reeking of beer.
"um, another party," i lied, trying to sound casual.
"sweet. here, take my beer." he thrust the cup towards me, spilling some in the process.
"no, i’m okay," i said, stepping back as he accidentally sloshed beer on my dress.
"oh shit, i'm so sorry!" jay exclaimed, trying to wipe it off with his sleeve.
"chaewon’s gonna kill me," i muttered, feeling the damp fabric cling to my skin.
"who’s chaewon?" he asked, genuinely curious.
"my best friend," i answered, my eyes scanning the crowd for heeseung.
jay, inching closer, asked, "so what, you have a boyfriend back home or something?"
before i could answer, i spotted sunghoon walking past with his arm over a girl. relief washed over me. "sunghoon!"
he looked at me, did a double take, and then asked, "ummmm what are you doing here? and what are you wearing?"
jay jumped in, "i invited her. who the fuck are you?"
"her brother. she’s fifteen, you pedo," sunghoon replied, making jay jump away from me.
sunghoon tried to drape his hoodie over my shoulders, but i flung it back at him. "i’m almost sixteen!"
sunghoon frog-marched me down the beach toward their bonfire, the girl trailing after us. "let go of me!" i protested.
"quit embarrassing yourself!" sunghoon snapped.
i twisted away from him, tripping and falling into the sand. he tried to help me up, but i pushed him away, spitting sand out of my mouth. everyone was staring at me.
my eyes landed on heeseung, who was kissing a pretty girl in a red sox cap and cutoffs. when he pulled away, she wiped her lipstick off his mouth. he took a sip of beer and then saw me.
"y/n?" heeseung looked surprised.
"but—but you hate the red sox!" i stammered.
heeseung looked away, embarrassed and regretful.
the girl stepped forward. "who are you?"
"who are you?!" i choked out.
red sox girl smirked. "karina… heeseung took me to the deb ball last summer. how do you know him?"
i turned to heeseung, my voice trembling. "but—i thought you said deb balls were bullshit and all debs were sheep!"
karina glared at him.
heeseung, looking flustered, muttered, "god.. you’re such a brat."
"well, you’re an asshole," i shot back, close to tears after seeing him rolling his eyes at me.
everyone at the bonfire was staring at me when jake walked over, throwing his arms around me and heeseung. "y/n, you came! we can all hang out tonight!"
i shrugged away from him, my face burning with embarrassment.
sunghoon stepped in. "i’m about to take her home."
"what about wonyoung? you can’t leave now," jake pointed out.
sunghoon glanced at wonyoung, contemplating.
"just let y/n hang. what’s the big deal? she’s already here," jake said, waving at someone calling him over. "brb!"
sunghoon turned to y/n. "stay right here and don’t talk to anybody."
i flipped him off and wandered, determined to find some peace on my own.
i sat alone on the beach, my dress bunched awkwardly as i wiped tears from my eyes.
i never should’ve come. maybe some things change, but not this. lee heeseung will never love me back.
a voice interrupted my thoughts. "hey, is that you?"
startled, i looked up to see a cute guy standing nearby. he had a sweet smile and dimples on his cheeks, wearing a stylish hoodie.
"um, who are you?" i asked, confused.
"it's me, jungwon! from the school olympics in freshman year? you placed second in the poem recitation."
i pulled down my dress to cover my thighs. "oh! yeah! you dressed up for the costume contest. weren’t you… a wizard or something?"
he chuckled. "i was charon, ferryman of the dead."
"oh! um, i'm y/n!" i replied, feeling a bit more at ease. "you can sit down if you want."
jungwon hesitated. "oh, i was on my way out." he then smiled and sat down next to me. "but i’ll hang for a bit."
"are you new this summer?"
"nah, i’m from here. you?"
"i’ve been coming to cousins ever since i was a baby."
jungwon looked puzzled. "how have we not seen each other until now? i would’ve remembered you. i mean, your poem was really, uh, memorable."
i rolled her eyes, but couldn't help but smile. "yeah, i stick pretty close to home when i’m here."
"how come?" jungwon asked, his voice sweet.
"i guess because i don’t really know anybody, other than my family."
jungwon's smile was warm. "well, now you do."
i smiled back at him, feeling a shiver run through me. i should’ve taken sunghoon's jacket after all. jungwon noticed and shrugged out of his hoodie, handing it to me.
"here, take this," he said gently.
i hugged my knees to my chest and pulled the hoodie over my knees, feeling a little warmer in more ways than one.
we sat on the beach, talking like old friends, which we kind of were.
"hey, so did… did everybody see me fall down before?" i asked.
jungwon hesitated. "um, yeah… sort of."
"my brother’s such a jerk," i muttered.
"who are those other guys?" jungwon asked casually. "is one of them your, um, boyfriend?"
i shook my head dismissively. "no way. they’re family friends. my mom’s best friend’s sons. it’s their house we stay at every summer." i looked over at them. "they’re just mad that i’m here."
"well, i’m glad you came," jungwon said sincerely. "i didn’t want to come because i knew it was just going to be people getting drunk, and i don’t really drink."
"me either," i replied. "so how do you know all these summer people if you’re local?"
"my mom works at the country club. i grew up around them."
i suddenly remembered something. "hey, do you know anything about the debutante thing at the country club? it’s dumb, right?"
jungwon considered my question. "well, it’s definitely steeped in tradition and a bit old-fashioned, if that’s what you mean."
"yeah, that’s what i thought," i said, though it wasn't exactly what i meant.
"but it’s not all bad," jungwon added. "they do a big fundraiser for women’s health, and they raised the most money in massachusetts last year. oh yeah, and stray kids came! look." he dug in his pocket for his phone and proudly showed me his wallpaper—a picture of him and some of the members.
"oh my gosh, that’s awesome!" i said, genuinely impressed.
jungwon looked at the time on his phone. "oh man, it’s late. i really don’t want to leave, but i have to be up early tomorrow. i’m interning on a whale-watching boat."
he hesitated, about to ask me something, but we were interrupted by a loud commotion. i turned around to see heeseung drunk and arguing with jay, who had a six-pack of craft beer under his arm.
"who cares? there’s plenty of beer. why are you starting shit?" karina said, rolling her eyes.
heeseung ignored her, stepping closer to jay. "they’re our beers. get the fuck out of here and go drink your cheap-ass shitty beer."
as karina walked away, jay got in heeseung's face. "say that again."
i jumped up. "i’ll be right back! don’t go anywhere!" i told jungwon before running over. in the scuffle, i was accidentally elbowed in the face and fell in the sand. heeseung turned, horrified, checking to see if i was okay. jay took advantage and landed a blow. heeseung, enraged, swung at jay, who got another punch in. jay's buddies joined the fight, and jake and sunghoon ran to help.
jungwon rushed to me, touching my face worriedly. "are you okay?"
"yeah," i said, stunned.
police lights flashed on the beach. "cops!" someone shouted, and everyone scattered in different directions. jungwon grabbed my hand and we ran down the beach toward the cars.
jake shoved heeseung into the back seat and got into the driver’s seat. "let’s go, y/n."
i glanced at jungwon. "jungwon can give me a ride home. right, jungwon?"
"yeah, it’s no problem," jungwon replied.
jake shook his head. "you can’t get into a car with a guy you just met."
"uh—actually, we sort of know each other. freshman year olympics? so we’re not like total strangers," jungwon said.
"no offense, but no. y/n, we’re going," jake insisted.
"just get in, y/n," heeseung said from the back seat.
i threw heeseung a dirty look.
jungwon sighed. "you should go. the whaling boat i intern on leaves at dawn from the piers every morning. would you maybe be interested in coming one day? i could introduce you to my favorite whale, jonah."
i could feel my face light up. "um, yes. sure! how else will you get your hoodie back?"
we grinned at each other, both nervous.
this could be my summer wish. this night, this boy.
in a truly impulsive move, i got up on my tiptoes and gave jungwon a sweet peck on the lips before jumping into the car. i was thrilled and delighted with myself, riding on pure adrenaline. the boys were dumbfounded. jake peeled out, and jungwon watched them drive off, completely awestruck.
jake slammed on the brakes. "fuck, we forgot sunghoon." he reversed the car, parked, and jumped out. "watch heeseung!"
i leaned my head back, my long hair hanging loose. i touched my fingers to my lips. it was quiet in the car. dark. heeseung reached out and touched my hair, running his fingers along the bottom.
"your hair is like a little kid’s, the way it’s always so messy," heeseung said.
i held my breath. our eyes met in the rearview mirror, everything between us unspoken.
"heeseung…" i started.
we were interrupted by a knock at the window. it was the cops, with sunghoon and jake in tow.
"have you kids been drinking?" one of the cops asked.
the dimly lit entryway was bathed in the eerie glow of the old chandelier, casting long shadows on the walls. the grandfather clock in the corner ticked loudly, a reminder of the late hour and the tension that filled the room. the room smelled faintly of damp wood and the lingering scent of dinner.
my mother, standing tall in her maroon robe, faced the two imposing police officers. her expression was a mix of worry and frustration. we stood behind her, huddled together in a cluster of nervous energy. sunghoon’s eyes darted around, avoiding mom's gaze, while jake shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot. heeseung leaned against the wall, clearly drunk, his shirt torn and a fresh cut on his cheek. i stood slightly apart, pulling my borrowed hoodie tighter around me.
"officers, thank you. it won’t happen again, i can promise you that much," she said, her voice strained but polite.
"tell mr. sim the chief wants to set a tee time with him when he’s back in town," one of the cops said, his tone lighter than the situation warranted.
she tried not to grimace. "absolutely. sorry again for the trouble. have a good night, officers."
as she closed the door, i could feel my heart racing, the guilt and fear bubbling up inside me. she turned to face us, her eyes flashing with anger. "how could you guys be so irresponsible?" yeji demanded, her voice sharp.
"mom, it wasn't a big deal. seriously. the cops were just looking to break up the bonfire," sunghoon said, trying to sound casual. i remembered the bonfire vividly, the warmth of the flames, the laughter of friends–a brief escape from my usual routine.
"not a big deal? i would say getting picked up by the cops for underaged drinking is a pretty big deal, sunghoon!" yeji retorted, her voice rising. her anger wasn’t just about tonight; it was about the countless times we’d pushed her limits. Her hair swung around as she glared at us, emphasizing each word.
sunghoon sniffed. "w-were you guys smoking tonight?"
yeji shot him a look. "keep your voice down! jina's asleep on the couch."
"but I wasn’t yelling. you were," sunghoon whispered, silenced by another look.
"by the way, yeji, was the dd tonight and i didn't drink, i swear," jake added quickly. Hhs sincerity was clear, but it did little to calm our mother’s fury.
my mother turned to heeseung, who was clearly drunk, swaying on his feet with his shirt torn and a cut on his cheek. "what’s with him?!" she asked the group before focusing on heeseung. "you’re the oldest. what the hell’s gotten into you?"
before he could answer, she noticed me. "and when did you leave the house without telling anybody? and what in the world are you wearing?" she demanded.
i pulling the hoodie tighter around me. "it’s chae's, and why am i the only one not allowed to go out?" i asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"it’s not that you’re not allowed. it’s that you should have told us you were going. how did you even get there?"
"i walked," i hesitated.
"jesus. you know better than to walk that far down the beach alone late at night!" she exclaimed.
"i was fine! can you stop treating me like a kid!" i retorted.
"if you want to be treated like an adult, you need to act like one," my mother said firmly.
"then maybe you guys should too," heeseung suddenly said.
we all looked at each other, confused.
"what does that mean?" yeji asked.
heeseung just shrugged and didn’t answer.
"guys, i don’t want to be the nagging mom. it’s even less fun for me than it is for you. don’t put me in that position," she said, her voice softer now, filled with a weariness that made me ache with guilt. she turned to me and Sunghoon. "we are guests in this house. remember that. and the next time i call you, you better pick up the phone."
we nodded guiltily.
"i hope you realize that this night could’ve ended a lot differently if your family wasn’t your family," she said to jake and heeseung.
"sorry, yeji," jake said.
"just-go to bed, guys," yeji sighed, her shoulders slumping as she turned away.
heeseung moved to follow me, jake, and sunghoon upstairs, but yeji stopped him. "i don’t understand what’s going on with you," i could hear her scolding him as i walked upstairs.
"gee, i don’t know, yeji. what could possibly be going on with me?" heeseung replied, staring at her in challenge.
she swallowed nervously, glancing over at the couch where jina slept. "hee…" she began.
heeseung brushed past her and up the stairs. she didn’t follow.
as we trudged upstairs, i couldn’t shake the feeling of dread. the night wasn’t over, not really. the tension lingered, a shadow that would follow us into our dreams.
i crawled into bed, the events of the night replaying in my mind. the cool sheets felt soothing against my skin, a stark contrast to the warmth of the bonfire still lingering on my clothes. as i settled beneath the covers, i heard the familiar two little knocks on the wall next to my bed—a secret signal jake and i had since we were kids.
we’d come up with it during a summer storm, hiding under our bedsheets, when we wanted to talk without our parents hearing. i knocked back twice, and a moment later, jake's light flickered off, leaving him in the dark. i smiled, remembering our whispered conversations through the wall, our childhood secrets shared in the quiet of the night.
the house gradually wound down for the night. sunghoon was brushing his teeth in the bathroom, his reflection in the mirror showing the meticulous care he took in his nightly routine. yeji, clad in glasses, busily updated her instagram, her face illuminated by the screen's glow. she smiled at the amount of likes and comments she was getting, a small step to branching out her books. jina was asleep on the couch, a peaceful look on her face, her hands clasped gently. heeseung quietly draped a blanket over her, his face betraying a complexity of emotions that remained unexplained—worry, exhaustion, perhaps something deeper.
back in my room, i couldn’t shake the restless feeling that kept me awake. the house was silent, but my mind buzzed with thoughts. unable to sleep, i pulled out my phone and texted the groupchat. my fingers were trembling with excitement.
the night wore on, and as the first light of dawn approached, i decided to get out of bed. i picked up jungwon’s hoodie and noticed the debutante invitation on my bedside table. my fingers traced the elegant calligraphy of my name: park y/n. the weight of the paper and the intricate design made it feel important, a symbol of the change I was about to embrace.
reflecting on how things could change whether i wanted them to or not, i realized that maybe it was time for me to change too. memories of past summers, filled with the same routines and familiar faces, made me long for something new. i picked up the rsvp card and checked the "accepts with pleasure" box. with a determined breath, i put on jungwon’s hoodie and headed out to the beach.
as the first light of dawn broke over the horizon, i found heeseung sitting alone in the sand, his silhouette outlined by the dim glow of the early morning. i sat down next to him, and we both stared out at the sea in silence. the cool breeze of the ocean brushed against my skin, and the sound of waves filled the silence.
“last night was…” i began, struggling to find the right words.
“a shitshow,” heeseung replied, his tone resigned.
“amazing,” i corrected, my voice softer.
heeseung glanced at me with a mix of amusement and concern. “you’re gonna have a black eye tomorrow.”
“it’s already tomorrow,” i replied, touching the tender spot near my eye. “do you even remember anything from last night? you were pretty wasted.”
his expression was serious as he replied, “i always remember everything when i drink.”
i wondered if that meant he remembered our moments in the car. as heeseung reached into his pocket for a cigarette, i sideeyed him.
“let me have a puff,” i said.
“no way! yeji would actually kill me,” heeseung replied, his voice laced with genuine concern.
“okay then, if I can’t smoke, you can’t smoke,” i countered.
heeseung's laughter was a rare, genuine sound, and it made his face light up in a way that i hadn’t seen before. “same old y/n,” he said with a chuckle.
i hugged my knees to my chest, a smile slowly spreading across my face. i touched my bruise, realizing i was different now—changed by the night’s events.
“let’s go pick up some of the good muffins before everybody wakes up,” heeseung suggested, his tone almost nostalgic.
a flicker of the old heeseung appeared, but i felt a pull towards something new. i stood up, shaking my head with a new plan.
“i’ve got somewhere i need to be. don’t let sunghoon eat all the muffins,” i said, my voice filled with determination.
i dashed to the side of the house where my bike was propped up and quickly mounted it. as i pedaled away, my long hair flying behind me, the first light of day began to emerge. the streets were quiet, the air crisp and filled with the promise of a new day. the upbeat tune of “xo” by enhypen played in my mind as i rode.
i thought this summer was going to be like all the other summers. but it’s not. because I won’t let it be.
Why I’m team Jelly
Something about Belly and Jeremiah makes so much sense to me. They just ‘flow’. Idk if that’s the right word, but it’s how I see them. Everything with them seems natural and easy, like they don’t have to try with each other, they just are.
I do understand why the Team Conrad people want to see them together (in some ways) but in my opinion, Jeremiah is the right choice for endgame and is Belly’s future.
Conrad was Belly’s first love. He was the older brother who was always sweet to her and who she harboured a crush for, for so many years. But Jeremiah’s the love that’s always been there. He’s the love that all of a sudden hits her in the face and she goes ‘how has it taken me this long to see it?’. Jeremiah is the boy who stayed at home with her for a week because she was sick and he didn’t want her to be alone. He’s the boy she stayed home for when he got sick too. He’s the boy she would run with to the beach with and play in the water. The boy who she knows “better than any boy”. She’s the girl who makes him feel seen (which only his mum and belly do). He’s the guy that will ‘always come and get her’. No matter at what stage Belly was in in her life, wether she was going on a date with someone or if she was little and was going to be home alone sick, Jeremiah pushed his own feelings aside, and chose to be there for her.
Maybe it’s only me seeing this as someone with a soft spot for Jelly, but everything seems less awkward with Jeremiah than it does with Conrad. Don’t get me wrong, there’s been more than a few moments with belly and Conrad where I’ve been like ‘omg that’s so cute’, but there’s also a slight awkwardness there sometimes. But I’ve never felt that there’s been an awkward moment between Belly and Jeremiah. Even when they were in the car together after not speaking for months, it was quiet and there was a tension, but it was never awkward.
They have such best friends to lovers energy and they have most importantly endgame energy. My only hope is that they show more of Belly feeling love for Jeremiah and not just Conrad. Because it’s so obviously there, so I need to see more of it. That boy means the world to her, and I’d like to actually see that shown more than it is.
Idc what anyone says, the relationship that Belly and Jeremiah have is so much healthier than with her and Conrad. Jelly communicates with each other, they tell each other how they feel and the love they have for each other (and I’m not just talking about romantic here) never falters, no matter the situation. Conrad seems to give affection and then pull away. He’s more talk than walk, whereas Jeremiah is more walk than talk. I know Conrad suffers with his mental health, and as someone who does as well, I can sympathise with him and understand why he does some of the things he does. But are we going to sit here and say that Jeremiah doesn’t suffer with his too ? I feel like people forget that Jeremiah has also lost his Mother. And he was there watching it happen, he saw her slipping away, that surely has had a huge impact on him. Not to mention that whilst it was happening, the girl that he was in love with was dating his brother, and he stood back and let it happen because he wanted both his Brother and Belly to be happy.
The entire scene with Belly and Jeremiah at the college sums them up for me. The montage of them giving each other piggyback rides and twirling each other around, Jeremiah tucking Belly’s hair behind her ear (did anyone else notice that when Conrad did that, she pulled away and asked him if she had something on her face, but when Jeremiah did it, she didn’t even flinch ? just saying 👀) the montage radiated nothing but complete joy, happiness and love and affection. And even in the serious moments, like when they talked about the future, Belly planned it with Jeremiah in it. And say what you want, but she didn’t plan it as ‘friends’ she was planning that future as a ‘we’, as a couple.
When Belly was at home and looking through the pictures of the boys and Susannah, clearly upset and missing them, it’s Jeremiah she called, despite them not having spoken in months. When it comes to belly’s struggles, she will always call Jeremiah for help. Always. And when it comes to Jeremiah’s, Belly is the only one that makes him feel better. Always. They just work. (Thinks if the tower of terror scene)
I just don’t want Belly to get back together with Jeremiah, only for her to then break his heart again. She clearly wants him, so let’s keep it that way, I am begging. Jeremiah deserves the world and Belly is his world. And Belly deserves the love she’s always craved (and without even noticing it at the time, Jeremiah is the love she’s always craved). She built Conrad up in her head, she gave him traits that she wanted him to have because she loved him, she gave him chance after chance because she loved him. But that true love, happiness fairly tale that she’s always imagined, that’s Jeremiah, and now is the time for her to notice that (as it seems she has) and to STAY thinking that.
I know how the book ends, and before anyone asks, no I haven’t read them. But I really do hope that they change the ending for the show. Jelly is a pure love. It’s a true love. They’re ‘real’ in the words of Belly. I’ve said this on someone’s post before, but the song Daylight by Taylor swift is very Jelly coded. The lyrics ‘I once believed love would be burning red, but it’s golden’ sums it up. Conrad was Belly’s burning red love. The love that yes, was deep and meaningful, but was also complicated and painful. Jeremiah is her golden love; also deep and meaningful, but the love that’s bright, one that makes her happy and is just easy. She never has to question herself around him, she can just be Belly.
And whilst im at it, I’ve seen a lot of discourse of people calling Belly a ‘bad person’ and I feel the need to stick up for her here. Has she made some mistakes ? Yes. Questionable ones ? Yes. But she’s a teenage girl for gods sake. Are you telling me that your teenage self has never made a questionable decision ? Are you telling me that your teenage self had never hurt someone ? Belly is young and has two boys who clearly care about and love her wanting her. Boys who have been in her life always. Of course she’s going to be confused and make decisions that hurt someone. I’m not saying she’s never in the wrong, because of course she is, but so is everyone at some point in their life. Again, she’s a teenaged girl, give her a fucking break. I never see anyone calling the boys ‘bad people’ for the questionable choices they’ve made.
Anyway, Jeremiah is Belly’s person. And Belly is Jeremiah’s person. Enough said. And also, THAT kiss!
I will never understand how people still think Conrad is BETTER for Belly than Jeremiah. Conrad was Daisy Buchanan and Belly was Gatsby. Which is funny because of all the Gatsby references this season. Jeremiah always loved Belly. Everybody is saying no Jere only started liking Belly the “summer she turned pretty” but did you see the flashbacks, Jeremiah has always been in love with Belly but always put her before him even if it meant not being with her. Conrad played with Belly’s heart all of season 1. Them almost kissing and then Conrad being an ass about it. When Jeremiah and Belly kissed Jere checked with Belly the next day to make sure they were still okay. Both boys Jeremiah and Conrad thought the Debutant Ball was stupid only difference is that when Belly asked Jere he agreed even though nobody thought even his own mother that he would ever go to one. And everybody is saying how Jere reacted to finding out Belly and Conrad kissed was over the top and dramatic but when Conrad found out Belly and Jere had kissed before hand he was like okay… flash forward to season 2 episode 8 and Conrad’s reaction to seeing Belly and Jeremiah kissing. Yes Jere had a reaction to finding out Belly and Conrad kissed because Belly and him had been “together” even if they weren’t dating. And Conrad’s reaction was so much worse this season when him and Belly were no longer together. Also Conrad essentially slut shaming his brother, not okay. And when Jeremiah wanted to keep his distance from Belly when they went to find Conrad and he wanted to stay mad he couldn’t. But Conrad’s reaction to seeing Belly at the summer house : “What’s she doing here” like wtf do you think you are. Conrad doesn’t communicate with Belly, he thinks he knows her so well but in reality he really doesn’t. While Jeremiah is always there for Belly and communicates with her. Also Conrad telling both Belly and Jeremiah to “grow up” when in reality he needs to grow up. Even Belly told Jeremiah that they had grown up and things were different. And the whole funeral thing when Conrad tells Belly he knew it was a mistake starting something with her and that entire thing like why was everybody only mad at Belly, Conrad was also very much in the wrong here. Belly wasn’t trying to make that day about her. Susannah was literally Belly’s second mom. Susannah’s death was hard for all of them. And I’m not denying that Belly and Conrad had some cute moments but they were so toxic for each other and manipulative. The both of them. And Jere was also a bit “toxic” don’t get me wrong but if you compare how the two of them treat Belly it’s clear who treats her better. And in episode one of season two when Belly calls Jeremiah, she calls him first, Jere was like oh did Conrad not answer but Belly called him not Conrad. Belly and Jeremiah were always best friends and that’s the best way to turn into something more. So excuse me for being TEAM JEREMIAH all the way, since episode one.
Summer Breakup — Jeremiah fisher x fem!Reader
Description: you get asked out by a guy back home, but here’s the catch, your dating Jeremiah so you ignore him which causes you two to have a fight which results in a breakup.
Warnings: this is a sad imagine so embrace yourselves… reader being a jerk
Fandom: the summer I turned pretty
Requested: no but they are open as of right now so send them in!!
You were sitting on your bed in your room if Susannah’s beach house reading a book, this summer you had contemplated on whether you still had feelings for your boyfriend of a year Jeremiah as there was another boy at school that caught you eye
Aaron Daniels was his name, he was star captain of the football team and you so desperately want to be his girlfriend after hearing your friend say that he wants to ask you out.
Your thoughts were interrupted when a knock was present at your door
“Hey Y/n/n.” Said Jeremiah as he walked into your room giving you a kiss on your cheek before sitting down on your bed in the other corner
“Hey.” You said as you looked up at him then back down at your book
“Want to go to the beach? I hear that the weather is perfect for a beach day.”
“I rather stay in, but thanks for suggesting it, maybe you could ask belly to go with you.” You asked, eyes back into the magazine
“If you say so…” said Jeremiah as he walked out of your room shutting the door behind him
——
“I’m telling you Steven, she’s acting really weird.” Said Jeremiah “it’s like she’s ignoring me or something.”
“Why don’t you do something about it?” Asked Steven “maybe she’s also feeling that way because you have been flirting with the girls more then you usually do.”
“Yeah but it’s not serious.” Said Jeremiah “it’s just who I am.”
“Look, I don’t know what to tell you but I think you should talk to her.”
——
“Y/n, we need to talk.” Said Jeremiah as he stopped you
“Can I get dressed first?” You asked as you were in a bath robe with your hair in a towel
“Oh, yeah, sure.” Said Jeremiah “meet me downstairs when your done.”
——
“What did you want to talk to me about?” You asked, you we’re currently sporting a baggy t-shirt and some shorts
“Why have you been ignoring me this summer?” Adked Jeremiah as he had his eyes closed, scared for your reaction
“I haven’t been ignoring you this summer, what are you talking about?” You asked
“You always decline my invitation to hang out.”
“Look, I didn’t want to tell you but-“ you said but you rolled your eyes
“Oh whatever, I’m just going to say it.” You said “I met someone back home and he asked me out before school let out for the summer an-“
“So you ignored me over some guy?!” Shouted Jeremiah as he stood up “what kind of person does that?!”
“A person who is in love jere!” You shouted as you stood up as well “im sorry but… I’m not in love with you anymore.”
“So you are just going to Throw away 2 years of our relationship for some guy you just met?!”
“I didn’t plan this to happen ok!”
At this point it was a screaming match between the two of you
“Fine, go to whoever the guy is.” Said Jeremiah “but just know… he is going to break your heart!”
And with that, he left bumping his shoulder with you making you step back a little bit
‘What just happened?’ You thought
