Anyhow, sort-of watching the first DB arc again (purposefully skipping over the gross scenes, and other scenes/eps are left out of the uploads I’m listening to) and I have no one IRL to infodump to, so dropping my inane thoughts here again

I’d totally forgotten how much the dub went, well, whole hog on portraying Oolong as a grown-ass man…there’s 1 line in the original where he mentions being younger than Bulma and maybe 1 other line where Bulma calls him a “little kid,” but the dub left both out, had the actor do the same deep voice he does for Oolong in Z*, and he constantly calls both Goku and Bulma “kid” and has old man kinds of lines—like when Bulma asks how he knows so much about the Ox King, instead of saying that he learned it in school like he does in Japanese, he says “I was a tour guide for the local Chamber of Commerce” X’D

So like, on the one hand, playing him as an adult instead of a little kid (probably deliberately so, given that one overt line about his age in his debut episode) is a weird and unfortunate choice that makes all his behavior creepier, especially given that he hits on teen Bulma and kidnapped preteen girls as his “brides”

But on the other hand, it’s way funnier for teen Bulma to successfully bully a grown-ass man into helping her out on a dangerous life-or-death quest to get herself a date X’D and the dub-canon that he yells out a wish—not for “panties” cus of a fetish—but for “the world’s most comfortable underpants” because he’s a cranky old guy who’d complained MULTIPLE times prior that his underwear was itchy and that’s what was at the top of his mind in that moment, is so good

*(he did a higher-pitched Oolong voice in the 2nd and 3rd DB movies, but I’m not sure if that was to indicate that Oolong was younger there, or if all of Brad Jackson’s early performances were higher-pitched in order to match the much-higher-pitched Ocean dub voice)

update: the Harmony Gold dub of Dragon Ball gave him an old-timey Jimmy Stewart voice…in America he’s just cursed to be portrayed as a tiny old man I guess XD
