in terms of design advice, any ideas for a broke college student apartment room? 💕💕
college is a weird time because you are kind of a grown up but also definitely not! and your interests and tastes will change so rapidly in the next few years. so honestly it’s a great time to experiment and be creative. this advice all depends on your particular space, but in any small space everything that can be double duty, should be double duty (night stand is also a tv tray/laptop tray, art is also bulletin board or jewelry holder), the more uses you can get out of something, the better! going vertical on the walls where you can get away with it is amazing. here are a few easy and cheap ways to upgrade and some basic design principles:
take this design quiz to find out your style (plug in a fake email) and then google or pinterest away. you’ll see repeat themes (for ex. major bohemian trend is macrame, which easily DIYable, or MCM is all about legs and clean profiles). maybe that would be fun post - to highlight different styles and trends. but here are some upgrades that translate to any design style for cheap:
PLANTS
don’t go to a nursery and drop a hundred dollars you don’t have. a plant or two or three you really love will change the vibe of the whole space, and give you something to take care of, which is ofc good for your mental health. tips for getting plants and planters on the cheap!
think of a relative or friend who already has houseplants and ask for free ones next time they’re splitting. i literally did my entire garden this way in my first place.
look on like FB marketplace or whatever your swap site is because people are often selling plants or cuttings for a discount.
i have literally split the cost of a plant with a friend and then split it in half, like a baby before Solomon
pothos plants of any kind are easy to take care of and can split into smaller plants pretty regularly.
succulents are usually a few dollars at the store and everyone loves them! start with one simple succulent.
herbs! if you get herb garden seeds or plants you literally make what you eat!
if you have pets, make sure they are pet friendly.
i do not spend a lot of $$ on planters! i use terra cotta because 1. they’re cheap as hell and 2. cute! some of my favorite planters are terra cotta pots kristina painted for me! you can also thrift pots, which i would encourage, or reuse food containers by putting small holes in the bottom.
create hanging plants by making yarn macrame holders! youtube is your friend on this! you can get a ceiling hook for like $3 if it’s a solid ceiling (drywall) and super easy to patch up when it’s time to leave.
ART
function + form. something organic that you can change out inspiration or art, like a cork or inspiration board (look on like a varage sale or in a thrift store for this). you can get four12x12 cork boards from target for $7 and create something like this from two of them, which is in and of itself a piece of art (and you can take it down w/out damaging walls)
other cheap things i have done for art:
calendar or magazine pages in thrifted frames (my favorite cheap tricks is to get matte black or white craft paint for $1.25 from wm or target and paint a bunch of odd frames to unify them)
a picture ledge like this from ikea is your best friend because you can interchange the art to be whatever you want!
embroidery hoop fabric bulletin boards
seriously, posters are cool. get a cheap poster online and hang it with washi tape. it’s not precious. if you want something more grown up, try to thrift a frame for it for cheap. if you don’t like the color of the frame, paint it! if you can’t hang something heavy like this on the wall, use command velcro strips OR set it on top of a dresser or bookcase and lean it against the wall.
i love tassels and buntings. just google either of those and you’ll get thousands of cheap ideas. in my last bedroom i just had a bunting i cut and made over my bed and it acted like a bedframe and i loved it.
just free prints from the internet hung up with little clips like this ($2 from target) or bulky push pins – those holes are so easy to patch!
when my kids were little until two weeks ago i had an entire wall covered with their artwork. i’m saying maybe go to the thrift store, get some ugly canvases with your friends, and have a painting party. everyone brings a $4 thing of acrylic paint and a brush and have a party. good memories + new art for everyone. swap at the end!
pictures! actually print out those pictures and tape them to the wall with washi tape. you can also do something like this with push pins for as big or small as you want to make it (i have this in my living room
here’s a proper primer on the 7 elements of design, but you can skip that and go here if you want!
BALANCE
white space and focal points. in the same way that you need to break up one massive wall of text into digestible paragraphs, you also need to break up the focus in your room. a FOCAL POINT is a statement area in your room (i.e. the window, over your bed, your desk) that your eye is drawn to, and where you want your eye to be drawn to. ideally rooms should have ONE focal point (that’s like the adverb room for writing) but in a dorm apartment, that isn’t practical because it HAS to be multifunction. the important takeaway is that white space on your walls is okay, and important. it gives you a soft space to land, visually, which is important in making you feel more relaxed and even productive.
groupings – grouping like with like makes great sense organizationally AND design wise. a collection of postcards will look amazing on the wall together rather than spread around the room.
LAYERS
adding layers can make a space feel luxurious – curtains, rugs, extra throw pillows or an extra blanket on your bed or chair. plants are great for this, but fabrics and baskets can add another layer. these can be pricey so i would a. raid your mom’s house if that’s an option and ask if she needs ‘x’ rug or curtains anymore. you can also thrift curtains for cheapppp or even look for clearance fabric – once you wash the curtains they really are safe to use. clearance frabric can be hemmed without being sewn and hung with curtain rings if you need to. and $5 tension rods can work as a curtain rod inside a window frame if needed. i could do a whole post on this but a cheap rug next to your bed and something soft on a window can do wonders! dude i have also bought cheap cotton weave cloth from walmart and used rit dye to make turqoise curtains and i loved for years. see also: RIT DYE
so decorative pillows are expensive as HELL but regular, cheap pillows are like $4. i get cheap fabric or thrift fabric and sew my own, which you could do by hand, really, and use the pillow stuffing to make it. ikea also sells great cheap pillow covers!
COLOR
gosh there are no hard and fast rule here but here is a great primer series on color theory for design that you can translate to your room
simplifying a color palette will feel more calming to you, and so will using cool colors like blues and greens. but again, no hard and fast rules. repeat a color or element (shape, pattern) throughout a room 3x (ex. i have a blue rug and that same blueish tone is in a chair and also on a bookshelf. they don’t have to be the same blue, just color family, and it makes it all seem more intentional)
HOW TO DO IT CHEAPLY
buy secondhand. there are entire thrift makeover and upcycle youtube channels that are amazing! same for diy blogs.
reuse and repurpose what you have. i turned a dvd player box into a toy oven for my kids and they used it as a play kitchen for four years. my bookshelf that stores our games in my living room was $12 from salvation army - i just painted it and added casters for $15. my dresser was a thrift from the REstore, a habitat for humanity store. my end tables are actually butcher block pieces that were in my dad’s factory for forty years. i love bringing old things back to a different life. and you don’t always need a ton of tools to do it.
barter and trade. i traded a one of my kid’s dressers for the hutch that holds our toiletries outside of our upstairs bathrooms.
sell and repurchase something that works for you. i sold my old bookshelves on fb marketplace and bought another that actually works better. this isn’t applicable to everyone!
make muffins for someone in exchange for their sewing skills or knowledge. i’m teaching my friend to sew right now! libraries often have classes and such to learn new skills.
OK so i have rambled enough. i could ramble more. i hope this gets you started and if you have more specific or follow up questions, on this or organization side of things, let me know! remember these are all just guidelines and the most important thing is having a space you love, that makes you feel comfortable and that you’re proud of and happy in. comparing yourself to others isn’t always the best and you can make it a space you love no matter where you are.

[Translation] Tsukihana Kagura Cast Presentation: Asahanada (QUELL)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2906a0fc31d2e3cf26a98a0e814a0cd0/ea1b93914cc353d0-2a/s540x810/b11c8eff904d4ec2cd11f9df400519d712ec7d78.jpg)
This is probably the last unit I post in person, the rest (VazzRock and infinit0) will be drafted and scheduled for automatic posting while I’ll be suffering through the hell named ‘final exams’. So officially, I’ll be going in hiatus for somewhere between 2-4 weeks (the first two weeks will be for the actual exams, the third will be free, the 4th for make-up exams if any).
After I’m done with tsukihana kagura, prepare to see SolidS CDs on your timelines. Anyway, many thanks to Ryota for helping me proof this.
Please don’t repost/retranslate/reuse my translations. Likes and reblogs are appreciated.
Nation: the affiliated country’s name Flower name: the name as a dancer Dance technique: the name of each person’s characteristic dance Dance props: the name of the tool used while dancing (there are cases when none are used)

Izumi Shu
“From a land that is as pure as water, the origin of Asahanada’s dance is an offering to the Dragon God.”
Nation: Asahanada ※chief
Flower name: Suika (Fire and Water)
Dance technique: Saikau (Spring Rain)
Dance props: Folding Fan / Inscription: [Kiryu] (Dragon’s Prayer)
This young man was born into a family whose members have been priests for generations. His country’s object of worship is a Dragon God whom they’ve been guarding in nature.
On the day he was born, the country was blessed with a sunshower, considered to be good omen, and subsequently a rainbow covered the sky. As everyone was convinced he was ‘the child of the Dragon God’, Shu was raised with great care.
During his journeys throughout the continent, which were part of his training as priest, he met Shiki from ‘Akane’, Takaaki from ‘Kikyo’, and Rei and Roa from ‘Mokuran’ and have been inseparable since then.
His dance is a prayer and a wish. Today, he sings and dances once more with wishes from different people enveloped in the music.

Horimiya Eichi
“Let’s pray and dance for our benign Dragon God! May this peace also continue from now on and forever!”
Nation: Asahanada
Flower name: Mizuhara (Flowing Water)
Dance technique: Suiten Ippeki (Blue Horizon*)
Dance props: Fox Mask / Inscription: [Shinko] (Dragon Fox)
As his job required him to live in the residence of the priests, coincidentally Shu’s house too, it was discovered by accident that his dance and Shu’s dance have good affinity, and, thus, the two were designated to perform together for the Dragon God since then.
Due to his unconstrained dance’s peculiar qualities, he was allowed to select any noble weapon that appeased him. That’s how he became the master of the fox mask ‘Shinko’.
Since Issei and Ichiru’s appearance in his life, his days became even more lively and fun.
Interview with Izumi Shu (QUELL)
Q. Please tell us about the highlights of this stage play and your impressions or story behind your partnered dance.
We come from a religious nation. Eichi and I discuss what sort of expressions we should make so as to portray a solemn atmosphere without adding too much realism.
Eichi’s always expressive so seeing him make a blank expression and show intensity is something to look forward to. Of course, I know because I dance beside him. … Oh, it seems like I just raised the hurdle higher for him, huh? (laughs)
Q. In Tsukihana, all 12 nations have their own specialties, but if you could come up with a new specialty for your own country, what would it be?
A super premium sake made out of nothing but rice. We’ll name it ‘Asahanada’.
Q. Lastly, leave a short message for the fans.
Although it doesn’t last for long, there’s a conversation scene in the play part featuring Ren from SOARA, Ayumu from ROCK DOWN and me. Quite the unusual combination if you ask me (laughs). These unusual combinations are one of its charm points. Please look forward to it.
Interview with Horimiya Eichi (QUELL)
Q. Please tell us about the highlights of this stage play and your impressions or story behind your partnered dance.
The choreography dedicated to the Dragon God is not that different from the choreography for the ‘Tsukihana Festival’, so check both of them out, you might find them interesting. While the Dragon God’s dance feels like dancing to the sky, through the ‘Tsukihana Festival’s dance it seems we’re giving praise to the flowers blooming on the ground. May this dance filled with prayers and wishes reach you!
Q. In Tsukihana, all 12 nations have their own specialties, but if you could come up with a new specialty for your own country, what would it be?
All sorts of onigiri
Asahanada is the country of rice!
Q. Lastly, leave a short message for the fans.
The drama part, the action, and then the dancing. There are so many things to do, half of my head feels like it’s about to burst (laughs), and I work in the practice room every day to the point my sweat is running on the skin. I’ll give it my all!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3b6e7d4383f8e14036ea5f651424e081/ea1b93914cc353d0-69/s540x810/f60c0c2c93d4db7279895f11e6bd9a243f01f448.jpg)
Kuga Issei
“Asahanada’s first flower shall dance now. ”
Nation: Asahanada
Flower name: Miboshi (Water Star*)
Dance technique: Suikou Setten (Moonglade)
Dance props: No props
He’s the oldest of the twins, with his mother being a musician and his father a ‘Flower Dancer’. The two of them have been aiming to become ‘Flower Dancers’ ever since they were little.
He is someone who intends to look for the meaning behind the natural phenomena that occur in Asahanada since it is a nation that is deeply religious and devoted to the Dragon God.
He and his younger brother, Ichiru, have aimed to become Flower Dancers and then they were given the opportunity to join Shu's group. Because of that, he thinks of rainy days as a wonderful blessing that lead to them meeting Shu and Eichi.
Soon after, he intruded on Shu and Eichi's ritual dance after being so fascinated, and was invited to come to Shu's estate.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/de40e34b7c290b546d48ea9baf035965/ea1b93914cc353d0-b8/s540x810/6eb7b78cc80c175287e0030a662452fa18cc13fd.jpg)
Kuga Ichiru
“Asahanada’s second flower, ready to dance!”
Nation: Asahanada
Flower name: Mizuru (Water Current*)
Dance technique: Suiten Houfutsu (Dim Horizon*)
Dance props: No props
He’s a young boy whose dream is to become a ‘Flower Dance’ together with his older twin, Issei.
In order to become candidates and be part of Asahanada's ‘Flower Dancers’, he had to pass a highly specialized test first.
However, while praying to get a passing score, he and his brother were caught in a shower.
In this country, it represents a symbol of luck. As a consequence, they moved into Shu's residence for work, and ever since have been practicing there every day.
Issei’s dance is graceful and beautiful. His is vigorous and resolute. When the two of them dance, the view is nothing but breathtaking.
Interview with Kuga Issei (QUELL)
Q. Please tell us about the highlights of this stage play and your impressions or story behind your partnered dance.
When the two of us are dancing, we can see Shu and Eichi giving us these looong looks in the mirror and they’re close to bursting out laughing. Seriously, we’re not children anymore.
Instead, we want everyone to look back on our triumphs as we enjoy ourselves in rehearsals, too.
Q. In Tsukihana, all 12 nations have their own specialties, but if you could come up with a new specialty for your own country, what would it be?
Rice crackers, Japanese sake.
Q. Lastly, leave a short message for the fans.
‘Tsukihana Kagura’, the story of the twelve countries. Have you already listened to our theme song? I try to listen to one song every day before going to sleep. I guess I want everyone to hurry and meet the people in this story, too? We'll be in your care.
Interview with Kuga Ichiru (QUELL)
Q. Please tell us about the highlights of this stage play and your impressions or story behind your partnered dance.
The performance is getting closer! "I'll study!" I say, but I really do learn while watching the others dance!
There are people who are good at doing turns, people who are good at using their props, and all that.
I've been talking with Issei about how much we've been learning, too. It's good that we get to see people who we rarely interact with dance on top of a joint stage. Shun from Procella and his dancing, for example! It was really pretty! I wanna see him dance more~
Q. In Tsukihana, all 12 nations have their own specialties, but if you could come up with a new specialty for your own country, what would it be?
A ramen dish with local flavours
Q. Lastly, leave a short message for the fans.
There are as many units as there are countries, but our nation is No.1! …… As you can tell, we’re training very hard! There’s just a little left until the performance! I’m looking forward to meeting everyone!
T/N: (this one really needs some explanations)
Eichi’s dance technique is titled “水天一碧 (Suiten Ippeki)”. Suiten means ‘water and sky’ and Ippeki is... hard to explain, you could call it ‘the farthest place your eyes can distinguish, and it’s blue all over’. Ryota and me tried to keep all these names short (max 3 words). So we shortened ‘ippeki’ to ‘blue horizon’, but keep in mind it’s a sea horizon because of the ‘suiten’ part.
Issei’s flower name is “水星 (Miboshi)”. While the kanji can also mean ‘Mercury’ (the planet), we decided to go for a literal translation (’Water Star’) because tsukipro decided, for some reason, to reference Issei’s name a bit (壱星/Issei, with 壱=one and 星=star) //you can see ‘star’ in both names
Same goes for Ichiru’s flower name, “水流 (Mizuru)”. The word does indeed mean ‘water current’, but they’re again hinting towards the kanji used in Ichiru’s name, 壱=one and 流=current
Ichiru’s dance technique is titled “水天彷彿 (Suiten Houfutsu)“. Suiten means ‘water and sky’ and Houfutsu is ‘shade’ or ‘dim’. We combined them and got ‘dim horizon’ (again, keep in mind this is a sea horizon)
I didn’t mark that in the post, but Issei’s dance technique also gave us a bit of a headache. “水光接天 (Suikou Setten)“. Suikou means ‘water and light’, meanwhile Setsu means ‘touch/contact’ and Ten is ‘sky/heaven’. According to dictionaries, the entire thing means ‘The reflection of the moonlight, which shines on a river surface and spreads until the sky’. [Here’s a picture]. Anyway, apparently English calls that verbosity ‘moonglade’. We learn new words with tsukipro.... and apparently Chinese too.
If you like my work and you want to support me, you can now buy me a coffee by clicking right [here]. I also started taking commissions, more details are right [here]. Thank you~

White Rose Week 2019: That Day on the Airship - Chapter 4
Audience Prompt: Jealous
Admin Prompt: Home
(Now also available on FF and AO3!)
Weiss and Ruby had been cuddling and quietly chatting for nearly a half hour. In the back of their minds, they were still aware of the harrowing week they’d survived and the potentially doomed mission they were on, but neither had to say they wanted to avoid those topics, it was a given. Besides, they had far more important things to discuss.
“I’ve been meaning to ask, you…” Weiss started with innocent curiosity. “What’s your favorite type of cookie?” She asked as she reached into the box of treats that she and Ruby had momentarily interrupted their cuddling session to bring from the countertop down to the floor with them. She inspected the small, chocolate-coated morsel before popping it into her mouth.
“Oh, I could never choose one.” Ruby’s expression was similar to that of a mother asked to name their favorite child. “Cookies are as complex as wine, they just take less time to make, don’t give you a hangover, and taste a million times better. It depends on the season, the baker, what’s paired with it…”
“Cookies have pairings?” Weiss asked with the tone of a diligent student. She wasn’t particularly interested in becoming a cookie gastronomist, but she was willing to engage in almost any conversation if it meant seeing Ruby talk passionately.
“Totally! Same concept as with wine and cheese, some combinations of flavors just taste better than others. Some go better with skim milk, some with whole, others are actually best with just water, and some reach the peak of their flavor if you eat a piece of fruit or ice cream with it instead of a drink.”
“My girlfriend, the cookie scholar.”
“Yep! But if I had to choose a favorite type of cookie right now, it’d be these ones here by a mile.” Ruby took another bite, beaming at Weiss.
“Really? Dust Scout cookies are nice, but they’re still factory made, and we aren’t pairing them with anything, so what makes them better than, say, a cookie from the fanciest bakery in Mantle?”
“Of course they’re paired with something!” Ruby said as she slipped the hand into Weiss’, intertwining their fingers. “They’re paired with you, automatically making them the best in the world!” She popped the rest of her cookie into her mouth and beamed, proud of her sappy comment.
“I walked right into that one.”
“Doesn’t make it any less true!”
“Fine. I’m inclined to agree that a cookie enjoyed with you is the best cookie in Remnant, but I’d like to find time to pair you with a cookie from a proper bakery.”
“You won’t have to twist my arm to get me to agree to that.”
“I’m sure I won’t. I’d also like to take you to go on a shopping date at my favorite clothing boutique.”
“I’ll help you pick out as many things for yourself as you want, but I probably won’t try anything on. I’m guessing everything will be too fancy for my taste.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure. It’s a combat skirt boutique.” Weiss smirked lightheartedly.
“Nevermind! I’m trying on everything in my size!”
“I haven’t even told you the best part yet. Every single piece they carry has pockets!”
“No. Way.”
“Yes way! And their designs are gorgeous.”
“Yay! I could really use a new combat skirt. I know I’ve only had this one for a few months, but sometimes it feels like I’ve been wearing it for more than three years.” Ruby glanced down at her attire, which had somehow survived multiple large-scale battles with minimal damage. “I love the design, but it might be time to try something different.”
“I’m sure you’ll be turning heads regardless of what you wear. Just watch out for snobby aristocrats. Some of them have a tendency to think their money can buy literally anything and anyone.”
“Uh ohhh! Do I need to worry about someone getting jealous?” Ruby wiggled her eyebrows jokingly.
Weiss rolled her eyes and let out a small scoff. “Don’t be ridiculous. I think we’ve been through more than enough to not have those types of trust issues. I want you to watch out for them because what I am worried about is Yang hospitalizing some highborn idiot for trying to hit on you. I’d prefer to keep our interaction with law enforcement to Winter and Ironwood.”
“Oooh, good point. Yeah, I’ll be careful.”
“Wonderful. I don’t expect us to run into creeps, but given our luck, I figured I should warn you.”
“Have I told you that you’re an awesome girlfriend? Because you’re an awesome girlfriend.” Ruby leaned in towards Weiss and gave her a quick peck on the lips before reaching towards her belt and positioned her face within inches of Weiss’. “Let’s get our first official picture as a couple!” She pulled out her scroll pointed the camera towards them.
“What for? It’s not like you can post it anywhere, the CCT is still down.”
“I don’t care about posting it, silly. It’s for me! Say ‘cookie’!”
Weiss was barely able to react in time, but she smiled just in time for the flash on Ruby’s scroll to blink. The photo turned out surprisingly well, with Ruby grinning like her hyper-excited self and Weiss smiling with peaceful contentment.
“Perfect!” Ruby exclaimed as she began tapping on her scroll.
“What are you doing with it?”
“Putting it where I’ll see it as often as possible!” She said, handing the scroll to Weiss. The same screen contained the same image as before, but with parts of it obscured by small icons. “My home screen!”
Weiss took another moment to look at the photo before she returned Ruby’s scroll and produced her own.
“I want one too.”
A/N: As always, I hope my writing was able to bring you some joy. Thanks to everyone who has liked, reblogged, followed, fav’d, kudo’d, and bookmarked so far! I’m approaching this impulsive project of mine with a staunch “I’m doing this for me, it’s fine if nobody else likes it” mentality, but I have to admit that knowing people other than myself are enjoying my writing is even more gratifying than I’d anticipated.
This was the most difficult chapter to write so far by a large margin, primarily because of additional restrictions I put on myself. It is also the one I’ve used the themes the least in, so enjoy some extended notes!
From the start, I knew that I did not want to use the theme of jealousy to pit Ruby and Weiss against each other, and I forbade myself from discussing their home lives, geographic origins, or use the concept of 'wherever you are is home for me’. While those approaches have a significant amount of potential depth, I figured that many others would be writing stories from those angles far better than I could.
I tinkered with several ideas for 'jealousy’, including having Weiss talk about wanting to go out of her way to make others jealous of Ruby as a form of putting her on a pedestal out of love, but I didn’t think Weiss would want to call attention to herself or Ruby that way, at least not in Atlas. I also considered having them get into a compliment war and be playfully jealous of each other, but I thought that would just boil down to me trying to find different phrasing for the same types of compliments. Plus, I already had Weiss gush about how strong Ruby is in the last chapter. In the end, I felt that having the concept of them being romantically jealous brought up and swiftly shot down entirely was the most appropriate thing to do given my portrayal of their characters. Plus, the kicker of Weiss being concerned that Yang’s reaction to someone hitting on Ruby would be worse than her own seemed fun.
For 'home’, I thought of the 'home screen’ idea relatively early and couldn’t come up with anything that felt better given the scenery and previously mentioned limitations. I thought Ruby being eager to have a selfie with Weiss and then ending with Weiss wanting one too was sweet, and I was relatively confident that this use of 'home’ would be unique.
These approaches for the themes left my chapter outline significantly shorter than I wanted, but it actually ended up working in my favor, as it gave me space to let the characters truly relax and be themselves for the first time after a VERY long day. It also let me reuse the cookies I placed in the kitchenette back in chapter one, and not having at least one mention of combat skirts felt like a crime.

Aaaayyyy so I found a post where someone shared their top 20 favorites and I decided I wanted to make my own to xD I made this template myself and I have a blank one (tho without text at all, I can input the “Top 20 Favorite Shows” if anyone wants me to). If you wanna do your own with my template, just shoot me an ask or PM!
Hit the read more if you really want to know my opinions on each. I suck at summarizing so it is a bit of a read, sorry about that heh
20) American Dragon: Jake Long - I thought this was the coolest show when I was a kid and I would always try to watch it whenever possible. Tho, while its not as cool now to me as it was back then, I still love this show and its characters
19) Milo Murphy’s Law - As soon as I saw the first ep, I just knew I was going to love this show. I’m a bit behind as of now but I cannot wait for new episodes! This show has a lot of charm and great characters, not to mention catchy songs!
18) Code Lyoko - I absolutely adored this show as a kid and it still holds up as a big fav now. The whole idea of going into a virtual world really fascinated me as a kid. I mean yeah sure Digimon had that to, but I was never really lucky in catching it on TV. Plus, the idea of the virtual world being animated in 3D while the real world was in 2D? Sign me up!
17) Xiaolin Showdown - Another show that I adored as kid and still do now. The characters and animations really made this show for me. I love how they all react with each other and some of the expressions it had to offer are top notch. And let me tell ya, this show has probably one of the funniest villains out there, Jack Spicer. He cracked me as a kid and no matter how times I rewatch the series, he still cracks me up
16) SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron - I never grew up with this show but I had just recently finished watching it for the first time. The animation for this show, especially at the time, feels amazing and it really does have this nice 90s feel to it. The show itself is really fun to watch and I am a suckers for cats and cool aircrafts. The SWAT Kats’s Turbokat is almost just as cool as an Arwing! I find the characters to be really likable and while I do question some of the designs for the female characters, I overall just really enjoyed them all
15) The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius - Jimmy himself was a huge part of my childhood and it still saddens me that his show doesn’t air on TV anymore. The characters are incredibly memorable to me, especially Sheen. The humor in this show never fails to get me to laugh and I always loved the interactions between a good chunk of the characters
14) Wander Over Yonder - I fell in love with this show after just watching a few episodes. The characters are well-written and the art is jaw-dropping, well, to me at least heh. The show itself is generally very sweet and the humor is great as well! I also adore the fact that Wander himself is always willing to help and its always kind to others. He’s a protagonist that we all need in our lives. Hopefully, we’ll get a season 3 someday
13) Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja - Love puns? Love action? Love ninjas? Well, this show is definitely for you (maybe). This show has a lot of cheesy jokes and puns, which is something I can appreciate. Puns are always an easy win for me haha The characters themselves to I find to be really likable, especially the main protagonists, Randy and Howard. The villains to are really entertaining as well. The animation for the show can be pretty awesome at times and its a shame that nobody talks about it
12) Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood) - Despite my distaste for blood and guts kind of violence, I couldn’t help myself from watching this anime. The story was amazing in every sense of the word. I’ve never watched anything before that has played with every single emotion I have (and I’m emotional to so that’s saying a lot I suppose haha). The characters and their development was well done as well. I highly recommend this show to anyone who hasn’t seen it (and can stomach the violence)
11) Avatar: The Last Airbender (and by extension, Legend of Korra) - I’m a complete sucker for elemental stuff, which is probably my favorite aspect of this show. Watching the characters fight each other with an element is pure entertainment for me. And speaking of entertainment, the humor. My goodness, this show wasn’t just action-packed, but also hilarious. The character development to is astounding and I’m sure we know just how well-written Zuko’s arc was (like damn son, it felt like a real experience almost). Another show I highly recommend to anyone, along with its sequel series
10) My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - I remember just how shocked I was when I watched the first episode and found myself loving it. I was never expecting a girly show like this to be as good as it is (and don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with a cartoon being girly, I just expected to be aimed for little little kids). I adore the animation, the characters, the story (when its present) and the lessons that each episode teaches. This show will never stop being entertaining to me, no matter what anyone else has to say
9) Animaniacs - I would’ve rated this show higher but I had to consider every segment the show has, not just personal favorites. Despite that, tho, I absolutely adore this cartoon. I didn’t grow up with it, but I first found it about 5 years ago and have loved it since then. While there are some segments that I strongly dislike, the ones I do love are completely worth it. Buttons & Mindy, Rita & Runt, Slappy Squirrel and the Warners made this show for me and I love them all (especially the brothers ha). The humor is some of the best I’ve seen in cartoons to
8) Over the Garden Wall - This miniseries captured my heart almost instantly. The animation, the story, the characters, I just can’t really hate anything from this show. I love how scary and unsettling the characters can be but yet there’s always a simple reason behind them (well, not always lol). And Greg, like come on, how can you hate this kid. True, he was annoying every now and then, but his innocence and his “words of wisdom” just makes him really likable, to me at least. I can rewatch this show over and over and I can never be tired of it
7) Ed, Edd ‘n Eddy - Whenever I think of cartoons, this one is usually the first to come to mind. This was one of my big favorites as a kid and its still one now. The humor in this show is great and its a gift whenever Ed speaks. And there’s just something special about how the entire show was animated and I can never truly put it into words on just how much I love it. Ed, Edd n Eddy is just one of those where I can’t really explain why I enjoy it so much, but trust me, if you haven’t seen it, its well worth your time (and it also has a really catchy theme song)
6) Pokemon - And by Pokemon, I mean the entire series, not just a specific arc or two. Before I was even into the games or just the Pokemon themselves, I enjoyed watching the anime even as a little kid. The anime is really the only reason why I got into the games in the first place. I know the series can be repetitive, some arcs more than others, but I just can’t stay away. I love Ash, Brock, Misty, Dawn, Serena, Clement, Team Rocket and etc. The slapstick humor in the original season is probably the best of this show’s humor but as the years went on, the battles have become better and better and I just love that. I just love Pokemon and no matter what people say about the anime, I still enjoy it to this day!
5) Watership Down - I would have never imagined liking this show as much I do. I mean true, I’m a sucker for rabbits, but I wasn’t sure if this show was truly great or not, but hey its at number 5, its obviously great! Yeah, the animation and some of the voice acting is quite lacking and the design and voice change in season 3 was hard to adjust to, but the story and characters are well worth it. Its definitely one those gems that don’t get a lot of attention, I highly recommend this show!
4) Generator Rex - Similar to Watership Down, I went in not expecting to love it as much as I do now. I knew the show was going to be great, but boy do I love it or what. Like dudes, this show is incredibly underrated. The whole concept with the nanites and E.V.O.s are just insanely cool. It also had a crossover episode with Ben 10 which was an awesome episode to say the least (also Ben merged with Rex in his Upgrade form and it was freaking sick). Like seriously, if I were to try to explain why I love this show so much, we’d be here for a while. Just please, watch this show if it interests you
3) The Amazing World of Gumball - I fell in love with this show upon seeing the first episode and by that I mean I became obsessed. I love everything about this show. The characters, animation, humor, the references, designs, just everything! And seriously, if there’s any kind of animation I had favored the most from a cartoon, its this one. I adore this show so much and I literally cannot wait for the next episode. It sucks that more story related shows, like Steven Universe and Star vs the Forces of Evil (both of which are still great, don’t get me wrong), takes all the attention away from this one. Its sort of underrated in that sense but seriously trust me, everything about this show is completely worth it. I highly, HIGHLY, recommend this one
2) Teen Titans - Aaahh Teen Titans, was obsessed with it as a kid and I still am now (to bad its hard to find stuff to reblog bleh). This is just one of those shows were I can’t explain why I love it as much as I do. I mean, I know I’ve repeatedly said this (because I’m actually bad explaining why I like things and tend to reuse the same sentences over and over oops) but like, I simply adore the characters and the stories. While Starfire lacked some good character development, the rest of the characters really grows and it never gets boring watching their arcs over and over. Like, I don’t know why I can never bored of this show, but I can’t. I just love it to much (and it also has one of the best theme songs ever)
1) Fairly OddParents - No no no, not the newer seasons. The older seasons! This show was my jam back as a kid and surprise surprise, its still my jam now. Excluding shows meant for toddlers, this was the first cartoon I ever got into (probably, it could’ve been SpongeBob or Looney Tunes but I kind of doubt it). This show means more to me than I could ever say. This show sparked an interest for animation and helped really get me into drawing. I was always interesting in drawing, but this show was what pushed me to keep going. It was also the first show I ever drew fan art for. I remember drawing Timmy and Cosmo almost nonstop for a year there, back when I was 2nd grade and finally taught myself how to draw them. I remember making comics with these characters, sharing and reenacting jokes with friends, never shutting up about it aahhh and come on, well all remember the Jimmy Timmy Power Hours, that crossover was legit the coolest one for me. This show is incredibly important to me and despite the direction the show has gone now, it’ll forever remain as my favorite show <3

Dragon ball GT... is better than Super
I think it's safe to day that most fans of Akira Toriyamas magnum opus, dragon, and subsiquently Dragon Ball Z, would say that it's follow up Dragon Ball GT ( Or Grand Tour from the opening theme ) is pathetic in comparison to it's elder series.
While no one will deny GT was a horrid example of when a creator is pushed out of the project for the sake of sales, after the success of DBZ and it's abridged counterpart Kai, Toei Animation who owns the rights to Dragon Ball wanted a new series that would bring Dragon Ball back to its American popularity during the 80's. However Toriyama who had spent most of his life working on the series wanted little to do with it. Aside from supplying some character designs, landscapes, and a few technological devices in the show. Toei continued to work on GT and to this day you can still fun some reruns of it on Nick Toons. Alas however GT was abhored by fans most calling it the death of dragon ball, until it's rise in popularity again with the battle of God's movie that serves as a precursor for the newest edition to Dragon ball, Dragon Ball Super.
Dragon Ball GT became infamous among fans quickly, most critiquing the rushed stories, flat characters, the loss of Toriyamas superb art, annoying characters, long drawn out filler and our main character Goku being turned back into a child. This along with the side characters of dragon ball who got some attention by the older shows but virtually none in GT. Fans were livid at Toei for allowing their beloved series to die as it did. Until years later with the fam and critical smash hit. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of God's. God's of gods put simply is amazing classic dragon ball. It introduced new characters that fans cling to immediately, showed fans an absolute peak to gokus abilities and gave major promise to a fan favorite character Vegeta. So naturally with the announcements of another new dragon ball movie Dragon Ball Z : Ressurection F as well as talk for a new Dragon ball show. Fans were overjoyed.
Okay so now that we have a basic idea of what GT and Super meant for the Dragom Ball franchise, what makes one worse than the other? The answer is not one thats going to n openly accepted by fans of the series but super didn't learn a single thing from GT. Dragon Ball Super would have you believe it's setting out to solve the problems DBA had, it would have you believe that it's meant to be an apology for GT even going to far as to set super before GT so it might erase it from Dragon Ball cannon. Supers first two arches, are terrible. Some of The animation looks as if it could have just as easily been done by a third grader, the first two arches of super also essentially steals the plot from Battle of God's. Though stealing is a hyperbole it reuses the same story as before but without the interesting dialogue and stunning animation. Ressurection F was... there by it was significantly less changed from it's movie counterpart to super. For better or worse, from there supers plot continues to build on the idea set in super that the universe Goku and friends have lived and dough in is only one of twelve in Super we meet others from different universes and theyre... bad... okay I'm dropping the formal argumentative essay shtick. Supers newly introduced characters for the most part are shit. Caulifla and Kale the only two female sayains we see fight in the show are meant to be hallmarks of support for womens rights, but they're bland. Caulifla is just a twerp, despite that I can kind I see where they were going with her. ' What if we had a Goku, but instead he was a girl.' Sounds like a decent idea, by in practice she just comes off as a brat. Only using thee people around her to get stronger and win.
Speaking of terrible character in Super, Kale is probably the worst example of this. Now I'm gonna say something a bit mean but.. KALE IS JUST FUCKING BROLY SHE'S LITERALLY JUST FUCKING BROLY. Which again sounds like a good idea, emphasis on sounds, in execution Kale has no character outside of her weird incestual crush on her sister. Now I can hear the argument that I simply don't like these characters because theyre female or strong female rolemodels, to prob that isn't the case I'm gonna shit on Jiren and Cabba. Jiren is a wall, and Cabba is so underused ( as are all the universe six sayains, and hit.) He doesn't really have a major character trait. I'm serious research super and tell me he isn't just a wet piece of paper flapping in the breeze. The Only moment Cabba gets is when Vegeta bullies him into becoming a super sayain. Jiren on thee other hand had a whole flashback sequence to explain his character. SUPRISE HE'S AN ORPHAN WITH A TROUBLED PAST THAT MAKES HIM WANT TO BE STRONGER. Honestly I didn't realize I was watching naruto. Jiren reminds me way to much of sauske, and any time a characters personality reminds you of sauske.. theyre usually not developed well.. or expressed well. Granted super has had some good moments but in comparison to GT it's not nearly enough.
In conclusion I fucking hated super because they refuse to focus on characters or ideas that are interesting. I mean there's a whole episode committed to Krillin trying to help in a battle royale between all the universes... by it doesn't even matter because he's eliminated really fast. NOT TO MENTION GOTEN IS GIVEN LITTLE TO NO SCREEN TIME WHY DO PEOPLE HATE GOTEN? WHY I ASK YOU!

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 HD Remix PS4 Videogame Review
Title: Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 HD Remix
Platform: PS4 (note this release combines various Kingdom Hearts games originally found on the PS2, GBA, Nintendo DS and 3DS)
Genre: Action Roleplaying Game ARPG
Publisher: Disney + Squarenix
Where to Buy: $49.99 on Amazon (at time of this writing)
Overall: 68/80 85% B “Very Good Game for Girls”
Geeky: 3/5 The games have fun gameplay, good graphics for the age of the games, and a great soundtrack. However, the Disney segments can be a bit too kiddie for some more serious gamers, and although the entire series is about the juxtaposition of light and dark, the light hearted disney characters can sometimes take away from immersing yourself in the deeper darker story of Sora and his friends.
Sweetie: 5/5 – This game is cuteness overload by combining well loved Square and Disney characters. It also has a surprisingly deep, relatively dark (for a Disney product at least), and mature storyline, which evolves and grows deeper and darker from game to game as characters grow and evolve.
Gameplay: 10/10 Kingdom Hearts is an action RPG. You play as Sora, a young boy who dreams of leaving his home town on a tiny island. When the game begins you are asked to choose a weapon. You may choose between shield, sword, and magic wand. You’re also asked which weapon you will give up. This allows you to customize your fighting style to match your preferences. You’ll also be asked a few questions. These questions do not have any significance on the story, but they do have a large impact on how quickly you will level up throughout the game.
A tutorial will give you a taste for how combat is in each of the games. You can run, jump, push and pull objects, climb, and use your chosen weapons as you chain attacks, dodge, defend, and parry to take down your foes. Enemies will drop small glowing orbs which can offer XP or sometimes restore health or other benefits. You will have to run around and touch the drops, because they do not get added automatically.
After settling into the game, you are allowed to freely explore the island, interact with NPCs, and engage in several minigames, such as fighting or racing with your friends on the island. You will see many familiar faces from both Squaresoft and Disney franchises.
Fairly early in the game, Sora gets his wish of leaving the island, and the rest of the game is played through traveling between different worlds, each representing a key franchise from Disney or Squaresoft. There are numerous battles to fight, areas to explore, sidequests, mini games, and hidden goodies. In fact, to find everything, across all games will take you almost 300 hours (and you’ll be awarded with an extra ending in each game). There’s plenty of content here to sink your teeth into, even for the most seasoned of gamers.
The action based combat is fun and snappy, while the mini games and interaction with a wide variety of characters gives you a break from the hack n slash combat, creating a well balanced game that equally values action as well as adventure.
Story: 8/10 I find it jarring at times how the story jumps between worlds, and I sometimes cringe at some of the Disney characters (and I consider myself a Disney fan! But it can really take away from the story, just when things are getting interesting to flash back to Goofy or Donald, especially with their well known silly voices and all). This can all make the story less immersive. However, at the heart of the story, you have a coming of age tale and a love triangle between 3 best friends. You watch throughout each game as Sora and his friends evolve and grow and change and how their friendships and relationships change as well. The story from each game is directly related from one game to the next. We’ve already watched Sora age by 2 years (and gotten a glimpse at a very young Sora as well). When Kingdom Hearts 1 starts, Sora is 14. By the end of Dream Drop Distance, he is 16. Many speculate he will be 16 or 17 in Kingdom Hearts 3. We witness Sora’s changing emotions as he transitions from adolescence to young adulthood. The main theme song in Kingdom Hearts 1 even hints at this with the lyrics of the chorus stating “Don’t get me wrong, I love you, but does that mean I really have to meet your father? One day when you’re older you’ll understand what I meant when I said No, I don’t think life is quite that simple.” Those lyrics perfectly describe the relationship between Sora and Kairi. An innocent love, a boy who still quite often views love/girls as “gross”, and a boy embarrassed by his emerging feelings of love for Kairi. And we witness not only how friendship can grow to love, but also how platonic friendships can change to rivalries when two boys love the same girl. The depths of both Riku and Sora’s love for Kairi is perhaps the best thing about the story.
I recently picked up Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 HD Remix. I had played the original KH1 and KH2 on Playstation 2 but that was over 12 years ago now. And I had not played the other side games.
Every game in Kingdom Hearts is connected, and contains the same 3 characters, Riku, Kairi, and Sora, and the story gets deeper and more complex as the games go on as more is revealed building upon back stories and prequels and sequels and spin off games. It can be intimidating for someone new to the franchise to pick up the games now with almost 15 years of games to catch up on.
Many people recommend the following order to play the games in to get the most out of the story:
Kingdom Hearts 1 (1.5 remix) Re: Chain of Memories (1.5 remix) Kingdom Hearts 2 (2.5 remix) 358/2 Days (1.5 remix) Birth By Sleep (2.5 remix) Re:Coded (2.5 remix) Dream Drop Distance (2.8 remix sold separately) 0.2 Birth By Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage (2.8 remix sold separately) X Back Cover (2.8 remix sold separately.) Unchained X (free mobile game, available separately) Kingdom Hearts 3 (sold separately – coming soon)
So you will need bare minimum to purchase 3 games
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 HD Remix Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Kingdom Hearts 3
And optionally download and play Unchained X on your cell phone.
Some of the “games” above are actually “cutscenes” because they could not emulate the nintendo DS “touch screen” on the PS4. So each of these nintendo remakes are movies which reuse old, and add new cutscenes to tell the story.
You can alternatively purchase and play these Nintendo games separately. But you should be fine with just the cutscenes from an understanding the story standpoint.
Characters: 10/10 I really enjoy watching Sora and friends evolve, age, mature, and change over the course of multiple interconnected games. I also really do enjoy seeing favorite characters thrown in from Final Fantasy and Disney. It’s a strange mashup but it works surprisingly well. If you are either a Disney or Squaresoft fan you will love the cast of characters in these games.
Graphics: 7/10 – Taking into consideration the age of the games, I think the graphics are beautiful and memorable. They are vibrant, full of color, detail, and fun. The character designs blend Disney’s whimsy and charm with Squaresofts more stylistic approach. Sora also reminded me of a brunette Cloud wearing Mickey’s big “clown” shoes. The bobble headed appearance of the characters, makes them cute, but it’s almost a bit too juvenile, given that even when we first meet Sora and friends in KH1, they’re already teenagers. I feel like they look like Precious Moments dolls, and about 7-10 years old because of the proportions of their heads to bodies. — Luckily, the artwork does improve in later games.
Take a look below:
Sora from Kingdom Hearts 1 (Does he look 14 to you? Not even close in my opinion).
14 Year Old Sora in Kingdom Hearts 1
Sora from Kingdom Hearts 2 (He is supposed to be 15 here, looks about right.)
15 Year Old Sora in Kingdom Hearts 2
Sora from Kingdom Hearts 3 (Speculated to be 16 or 17 here) (meh this design is alright, I expected to see something like Final Fantasy XV quality here. There are very few details in the hair/face and almost no shading on the clothing, it just looks kinda flat/plastic-y… not what I’d expect from a PS4 title. He does look a tiny bit more mature, slimmer face, etc.)
Music: 10/10 I’m a big Utada Hikaru fan, and I love the opening theme “Simple and Clean” – as I mentioned, I feel the lyrics foreshadow the coming of age story and changes that our little island buddies are about to experience. She also sings “Sanctuary” the opening theme of Kingdom Hearts 2. And it has been confirmed that she will also be involved with the opening for Kingdom Hearts 3. My favorite Utada Hikaru song though will always be “First Love”. The Japanese versions of the tracks are also quite catchy even without knowing the lyrics or understanding Japanese. The background music is also fitting and full of adventure and wonder.
Voice Acting: 6/10 – The voice acting is definitely hit or miss for me. Some characters I think are perfectly cast, and others way off mark. Some give pretty convincing performances, while others are too overdramatic and/or the opposite, lack any feeling or emotion in the deliverance of their lines. The iconic Disney characters also can tend to annoy and detract from the story with their overly cartoonish voices for which they are so well known.
Replay Value: 9/10 Although the games are linear, there are multiple games in this “bundle”, and each game has a secret ending, usually only uncovered for completing all side quests, or playing on the hardest difficulty settings, which will take you around 270 hours total according to How long to Beat. Even if you don’t want to go for the secret endings, you’re still looking at over 130 hours of gameplay just for the main stories of each game. For just $40something, that works out to around 30 cents per hour of entertainment. Therefore your return on investment is quite high in this title, even if you might only play each of the games once.
Overall: 68/80 85% B “Very Good Game for Girls”

Have you ever made a top 10 list of vidya you like? I enjoy reading your insight into games and I think it would be interesting to see that list and your reasons for liking them.
What is your favorite… sibling? Body part??
OK like, technically I did already make one, on this very site a long time ago (technically I reviewed the 10 that made the cut, separately), but I’m not super crazy about my analysis skills then and many that were on that list just ended up changing with time - both because I played more games and because I just ended up realizing I liked different games better.
Given that I absolutely love running my horrible mouth for probably way too long, your ask made me want to do one again, which was already an idea somewhere on the back of my mind.
A couple of disclaimers before we actually get into it:
No game is perfect. Games are made by human beings, who carry personal biases and intrinsic flaws. I love a ton of games and they are All flawed in different ways and amounts. If anyone tells you a piece of media is straight up perfect, you should run. I am not claiming any of the games on this list are perfect, and I am well aware of their issues. I have eyes and can read.
This is my list, the barometer for it is Me. If anyone reading this takes issue with picks (which is something I keep seeing happen and it still makes no sense) just simply don’t interact or make your own list. Not looking for arguments here.
These are not, of course, gonna be in-depth for all of the games, just what exactly makes me like them so much, which was what I was asked. There are only so many spoons an enby can have, after all.
I tried keeping it to one game per franchise (barring one arguable exception) because otherwise this would get much, much harder than it already was.
Additionally, I failed to round out 10 of them, only managing 9. I beat around the bush a LOT about what the 10th one was gonna be, but no matter what choice, I always felt like I was gonna betray myself in the end, so I have reserved a section for honorable mentions at the end. These are also not numerically ranked, because while I have a long-standing Favorite game of all time, which is the last one I’ll get to, the other ones occupy uncertain, ever-changing spots.
I’m currently sitting atop a good pile of games I’ve been meaning to check out for ages, and since 2 games I’ve played recently made this list, I think it’s prudent to also make a spot for games I plan on playing to completion soon.
Here you go, anon! (And anyone else who might be interested)
Stardew Valley:
This game is both the most recent release to be on this list and also the newest entry, since it literally hasn’t been a month since I’ve finished it, and that’s part of why I placed it first here.
Though saying I “finished it” is kind of a lie, and that in itself reveals the magic, even after the “soft ending” I just keep going back to it every day, because it’s a world that just puts me in such a relaxed state… I want to spend time in my farm with my bisexual husband every day and I’m already planning two other playthroughs even if my first one is already creeping up on 100 hours!
See also: I’m… not particularly into farming sims? I’ve tried getting into them before but I just found them a little inane and unfocused, if that makes sense, so if my love for a game can transcend even a genre itself, I’d say that’s a pretty well-executed game, generally speaking.
I just also find it super endearing that the entire game was made by one person. From the artwork, the writing and the soundtrack… it’s crystal clear that a LOT of love and genuine effort went into it, and that’s very heartwarming and gives me hope.
Speaking of love, it’s also the entry in this list that has the most queer representation in it, and that’s a huuuuge plus for me, as a nonbinary bisexual. It’s a pretty cute game, and it also still manages to juggle a lot of complex themes which are very personally relatable to me with surprising tact.
Pokémon Black and White:
This is going to date this post pretty hard, but I’m actually replaying this one riiiight now. It’s actually right next to me on the table. How quaint!
These have been my favorite main Pokémon games since their release, and it’s largely a case of me being awed by its story and characters when I didn’t expect to be. I also really appreciate the risk these ones took by excluding Pokémon of previous regions to post-game content, since it forces you to get to know the new ones (which are both plentiful and incredibly creative imho!!) as you make your team.
I really appreciate the moral themes explored in this game, and how they even toyed with core concepts that had been with the series from the word go, questioning the morality we were just supposed to accept from the onset of this franchise, to the point that I’ve seen many people feel guilty about opposing this game’s main antagonistic force, N (who’s one of my favorite characters in fiction, at that).
If we’re talking strictly about casts as collective, this one has my favorite, without a doubt, in terms of rivals, antagonists, gym leaders, and even other minor npcs. I liked how they managed to effectively tie in the gym leaders with the plot, which really should be done more often, and I feel the games suffer when that doesn’t happen (hey X and Y! what’s up). The character development a lot of characters get in the sequel (which while still good, I’m not as fond of) is also very good!
Am I also still salty about folks passing this one up and then posting misinformed, under-researched opinions about it, or even deriding the Pokémon designs? Maybe! …Yeah, okay, I am. I have vivid memories of forum posts at the time, okay?
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky:
So this was the exception I was hinting at before, in the disclaimers. It’s a spin-off that’s quite different than the main series in gameplay, so I’m counting it. I really couldn’t live with myself if I made a list of my fave games and didn’t put this one in it, seeing as it’s one of the most surefire ways to make me cry there ever were.
Much like the previous entry, this one is yet another case of the writing taking me entirely by surprise. It would have been very easy to make this spin-off a quick cash-in just using the Pokémon name, but hot damn does this one’s narrative deliver in good writing.
The previous Mystery Dungeon game was absolutely no slouch in touching very dark themes, but I do feel like those were executed both better and more uniquely in the “sequel.”
Every part of this game past the time travel is just lip-smacking, and although it starts slow, you can definitely see pleeeenty of foreshadowing nearly everywhere, which makes replaying this one very fun. It’s definitely also on my “Must replay at least once a year” list as well.
I think every game in this list has a great soundtrack, but this one takes the cake in utilizing it to heighten my emotions. I think everyone reading this who’s familiar with the game knows what I mean when I say that the farewell scene (and the track that plays in it) is completely heartwrenching and beautiful. Definitely one of my favorite scenes in gaming.
I’m also gonna give a shoutout to the relationship between the player and the partner here for being super endearing and genuinely touching, whether you see it as romantic or platonic.
Sidenote: I will have the liver of that one reviewer who stopped at Apple Woods and then said this game was nothing special.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask:
The prize for reused assets done well goes to…
I would follow that up with a joke, but I’m not gonna. This is legitimately a good thing imo. I think it’s incredible that this game was made in one year because they had to rush it, and there’s a lot you can learn about game design and creatively cutting corners by the way Termina was created, too.
The fact that this game came out as great as it did is almost a miracle, everything considered! I really like the setting here, it’s so delightfully weird, and it makes me care about the fate of even its incredibly minor characters, which makes their impending doom and that of Link’s even more harrowing.
I could see how the time-management aspect of it wouldn’t fly with a lot of people, and admittedly I’m most familiar with the 3DS remake, so I can’t comment too much on how it used to be originally, but I think it largely synergizes well with the story. This IS a world about to end, so it feels warranted in a way that could be tough to justify otherwise.
This game also does something very well with horror, both in-game and in backstory, which is that it doesn’t spell out every implication and event out for you, but it implies juuuust enough that your mind makes you even more anxious and paranoid, as nothing could ever be as scary as your mind actually makes it out to be, and toying with this is way better than outright throwing scary shit at you… even if this game does that as well, what with those mask transformations and whatnot! Jeez.
Undertale:
I don’t know how to start this entry without outright saying this in some shape or form, so it’ll have to do - I don’t care about the fandom. I just don’t. They’ll do whatever the fuck they want with those terrible AUs and character biases, and I’ll bemoan it as usual, but I actively refuse to stop loving Undertale as it is because of them.
This game is a brilliant commentary on video games as a whole and has a great metanarrative! Pretty brilliantly and excellently executed, to be honest. It’s also yet another game that makes me cry frequently, and also makes me introspect more than I already do.
The gameplay itself can be hit or miss for me, but I don’t feel like it hurts the strength of what is there in other areas like storytelling, worldbuilding, soundtrack and character writing. It’s a bit like pinching a very hearty, stout elephant!
The different endings offer very, very different experiences that ultimately contribute to this setting and its commentary as a whole, even if I’m too much of a goody-two-shoes to ever do the No Mercy Run, but I enjoy the fact that it exists AND that the game itself calls me out for not doing it myself but watching it on youtube. Boy, did I get read for filth with that one.
It’s also a game that masterfully implements a very specific kind of humor that I can’t get enough of, and it does so while simultaneously developing its characters and giving each of them just enough time to shine. It’s a great cast, all in all. I just wish people would appreciate more than one of the characters.
Fire Emblem: Awakening:
Like the game that made me etch a symbol on my fucking flesh forever wouldn’t make the cut. Come on.
I feel like this is the game in the series that comes the closest to getting the balance of qualities I appreciate about gaming right. It could always be better in a multitude of areas, but there’s a reason why it’s one of my most replayed games in general. The more whimsical tone? Doesn’t actually come close to bothering me, at the end of the day.
A lot of people don’t really attempt to get to know the characters like, at all, and then go on to say really dumb shit about them on social media that I’ve been known to flip the fuck about, just a little. But there’s just so many little details and anecdotes about them that you can learn through supports that make them feel more familiar to me, personally, than other casts even within the same series.
This game is also the one responsible for getting me through a really hard time in real life, so of course I still hold it extremely dear while growing out my critical lenses about it simultaneously (Yes, this can in fact be done). It did something similar to the franchise, too, which is always incredible and noteworthy!
It’s also responsible for me being on this site, so you really can say that its impact on my life is the biggest on this list, and I’m… not at all ashamed of admitting that.
I’m pretty sure I’ve spent over 500 hours with this one, without even counting the hours spent re-reading supports and other convos for my writing. This is a lot of goddamn time, but I don’t necessarily want it back, and that’s a good thing.
Udobure owns my soul.
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia:
If you were to suck out my brain into this fucked up jar thing and make it spit out my aesthetic biases in creative goop that creates games, two of them would come forth from this messy birth - Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia and Bloodborne.
Given that I’ve actually played OoE myself, it goes on the list! End overview.
…Now, that’s not exactly untrue, but I would be underselling the game if I left that as is, so I’ll clarify other aspects about it that I enjoy.
The main character, for one, she’s one of my favorite protagonists, and it makes me glad she seemed to be popular, but I’m not exactly thrilled with how what a lot of people (and the company) remember about her is fanservice.
Her story really struck a chord with me. She’s been robbed of her own emotions and memories at the start of the game, and when she regains slivers of it throughout the game, they still feel foreign to her, but even when things look to be at their absolute lowest (REAL nice plot twist, by the by!) not even that will stop her from performing her duty.
Another thing I enjoyed about this one was the difficulty. Normally, I’m not one to prefer the higher settings just because, and even when I try them, I frequently find myself in the position of questioning the absolute bullshit some games pull to fake any actual difficulty, but it works here because it’s actually balanced really well with what you can do and what you have available to you, making you actually think strategically.
Another thing I liked about this title that makes it stand out from the rest of the series is the map variety, since Shanoa isn’t constrained to Castlevania for the entire run, the game has an actual opportunity to show different locales, which is nice, even if they sometimes get reused in a boring way with just a different paint job.
Bayonetta:
Thiiiiis one gets on here for the longest period of courtship, without a doubt. I’ve been wanting to play it ever since it came out, but only got around to it this very year, since it was finally released on a platform I owned.
Well, alright, that’s one of the reasons, the other reason it’s here? It’s fun as FUCK to play! Every movement you make, every action flows into another and the combos all feel very natural, easy, but not devoid of strategy or thinking behind them. Beyond the gameplay, the entire thing is so darn over-the-top in typical Platinum fashion. It’s a very enjoyable ride that never forgets video games are supposed to be fun, above all.
I absolutely adore Bayonetta herself as a character. She is so amazing and multi-faceted despite the fanservice packaging. She’s quipping like the best of them in one scene, like nothing ever affects her, and then also ripping your heart out later when she shows believable vulnerability.
I would be remiss to not mention the soundtrack, since it’s one of my favorites in gaming (beaten only by the very next entry on here) and is also my go-to for writing; Between fun, catchy themes like Mysterious Destiny and Tomorrow Is Mine, reimaginings of older songs that imho are better than the originals, like Fly Me To The Moon and Moon RIver and utterly jaw-dropping boss themes like Blood and Darkness and The Greatest Jubilee, the OST conveys every beat of the action spectacularly and makes the experience even more memorable than it would have already been.
Bayojeanne forever.
Legend of Mana:
I swear I’m not trying to be hipster-y by having my favorite one also be the least popular one on the list (by a long shot) but it’s likely that the fact that content for it is so rare somewhat influenced how close this game is to my heart, in a way. I think it made me cherish it more.
You won’t find another game quite like this one, I don’t think. The setting is extremely unique in that… you build it. You have to decide where every area in the game goes and all. It’s actually implied you’re rebuilding this world after all the magic in it has gone to shit. It’s something I really like, for sure.
It definitely makes you work for its story, and though the gist of it is presented in a cumbersome way, being exposited in history tomes you can acquire and view in a specific location… even they don’t completely spell out the backstory of this world, but in a good way rather than the usual “we blatantly didn’t finish this” kind of way. It helps that there is a lot you can learn about it from environmental storytelling and interpretation, as well. I like that, being asked to think about symbolism and what it means.
Another good point about this game that’s difficult to articulate is that it manages to create an entire world with its own set of morals and philosophies that, if taken at face value, can sound completely alien to us, but the game immerses me so deep into its world, that I end up understanding what they mean by it anyways and sympathizing where I might have not. I think that helped shape my introspective nature a lot, in retrospect.
There’s also the fact that although the four biggest story arcs aren’t actually linked at all, they do still absolutely play into the same major theme… even if a lot of people end up missing what it is due to how obtuse this game can be (It’s love, my dudes. Love and its classical understandings are the theme that permeates this game’s setting).
It’s also absolutely impossible for me to talk about Legend of Mana without gushing about its art design. Even if the graphics themselves aren’t great, the way it implements backgrounds still completely floors me every time I play. It does really interesting things with perspective, which you don’t see often. Hell, even the aptly-named Junkyard is unreasonably gorgeous.
The soundtrack, then? It’s Yoko Shimomura at her absolute best. It goes all the way between upbeat melodies and soul-rending compositions and it’s just intensely distinctive. A special note goes to the song City of Flickering Destruction, which still makes my heart tighten even after so many years.
Whew uh, this got long… if you’ve read this far, congratulations! You certainly can put up with an untold amount of bullshit. I’m sorry this became so disorganized, but I also… really enjoy sharing these. Really, I do. I hope I at least piqued your interest with even one of these entries. That alone would make writing this worth it a thousand times over.
