I have come here to vent about the current political situation in America and how bleak it feels so uh. Putting that below the cut for those of you who want a more pleasant scrolling experience.
But yeah. Political analysts are saying that we’re sliding closer to a theocracy.
The TL;DR of it all is that as the United States became more pluralistic and diverse, white Christians felt threatened. These are the fundamentalists, the evangelicals. Those the truly believe the only way for people to be ‘saved’ is to be Christian, and those who are not Christian will go straight to hell. So therefore everyone must be Christian. Also they beat the shit out of their kids.
So the Republican party became about preserving the “Real America” as in white and Christian, preferably evangelical, and kept doing more and more to keep power.
Currently there’s a shit ton of Conservative judges from the lowest courts to the highest courts, and this country is so gerrymandered the popular vote doesn’t matter.
Many of the 1% aka stupidly mega rich support Republicans because their policies give them tax breaks, bailouts, and loopholes.
ANd the democrats? Majority of the old guard is so rich and in love with power that they don’t give a fuck. They’ll take their donations, and vote in a way that harms the people, while mocking the few who actually try to help. It’s become increasingly difficult to vote out Republicans, efforts to get rid of the filibuster have been blocked, and forget getting rid of gerrymandering. Voter protections? The President of the United States literally said that grassroots movements campaigned for the last 2020 election, they can campaign for future.
Except they campaigned in the hopes he would do something to make their lives easier. Not to mention that when it came to the senate, the democrats just barely filled half the seats. People are fucking tired, and disillusioned. People are dying of covid and the latest response from the government? The insurance will reimburse you for a covid test you have to pay out of pocket. (Assuming you have insurance, as well as the executive function to fill out reimbursement paperwork)
Roe v. Wade is millimeters away from being overthrown and the only recourse to protect people’s rights to an abortion is to expand the Supreme Court.
Yeah that’s right. All that checks and balances shit doesn’t really work out when you have people with a political agenda serving a role that requires no political agenda. Oh and two of the people aren’t even qualified. Oh and two of them have been accused of sexual assault. Oh and a Supreme Court seat is for life.
I have no idea how to fix this. Protests aren’t working. (The President IGNORED people hunger striking to stop a pipeline.) Letters aren’t working. (Though do recommend writing Nancy Pelosi if you want to see the most condescending as fuck auto-response) People being vocal about these issues isn’t working. I really don’t fucking know how we’ll stop this slide into authoritarianism.
And I’m scared.
I’m scared for myself, an openly queer, disabled, femme.
I’m scared for my family, several of whom do not fit the ‘straight white non-disabled Christian’ mold.
I’m scared for every single person living in this country who isn’t ‘non-queer, non-disabled, white, Christian’.
So many people on the other side have far too many guns and weapons and are just waiting for a situation they can use them. On other people.
January 6th was just the beginning. January 6th should have been a sign to democrats to get working on making certain we had a democracy.
Instead, in the November 2021 election, people who were part of the insurrection got elected to office.
The only ‘hope’ spot is that...I’ve got these vibes that something is going to happen this Winter. I’ve mentioned it on my blog before, and I know I’m not the only one. It sounds crazy, and maybe I’m wrong. But the United States has got a lot of issues right now, and millions of people who are at a breaking point.
In February they’re going to restart Student Debt payments. Payments people cannot afford.
There are businesses stubbornly refusing to pay decent wages, and treat employees well. People have had enough.
Pandemic unemployment was cancelled in September, ending benefits for millions of people. In much of the US, there’s snow, and it becomes cold in Winter. Additionally, some states that do not normally deal with freezing conditions are having freak snowstorms thanks to Climate Change, which means paying for heat and emergency supplies that otherwise would not be needed. Or they’re on the streets, and not prepared.
Oh and speaking of the pandemic. Well we’ve got a new variant, people refusing boosters, or even vaccinations entirely. The idea of wearing a mask has been extremely politicized, and schools? Winter is THE time of year for kids to get sick, and boy oh boy are kids great at spreading germs. Some places have banned masks. And in many places, ventilation is still shit because the schools don’t have the funding for new books, let alone new ventilation systems. Additionally, going outside is even less of an option in places where it’s cold. Kids are gonna die. People are gonna die. And the callousness of the Right when it coems to these things is gonna hurt.
All of these things added up? Something is coming this Winter. I don’t know what. It’ll probably be bloody. And I don’t know if the outcome will be good or bad.
