You turned your head so fast toward Khonshu you were sure you should have popped your neck.
‘Did he really just offer to tell me why Jake should remain a secret?’
His question caught you off guard so much that you didn’t know how to react. The only thing you could think to do was nod.
Khonshu nodded in agreement, letting out a small cough to clear his throat before again turning his focus off into the distance.
“A connection was made a few years ago.  A connection that was bound by Ammit in a final  attempt to save herself before her destruction during our last battle.”
‘A connection?’
You didn’t remember much from that time. The whole ordeal of Ammit regaining her godly form was mainly a mystery, except for what the others shared with you.
You were present for the calling of the Ennead Council, filling in for Thoth and entrusted with writing down what had been discussed. Immediately after, though, you were hidden away.
While the other gods decided to ignore the warnings that Khonshu tried to give them, Thoth took them seriously.  You were sure it’s what saved your life. Especially considering that you, Marc, and Layla were the only three Avatar’s that survived from before that time.
It was also the first time you’d seen Marc and Steven.
You didn’t realize it was them until after they shared that they had been an avatar.  It was hard to act like this was something you had no idea about.  It was even harder to not let it slip how you felt witnessing the two of them struggling to be heard and understood.  Even with each other.
Either way, you never expected to hear Ammit’s name again. At least not in terms of her being a current threat.
“Ammit?” you whispered.  Your voice hushed coming back from your memories. “Yes…”
“Ammit made the connectionwith you?”
Khonshu shook his head.
“No. There is no connection made with me.”
None of this was making sense.  What did any of this have to do with Jake’s existence having to be kept a secret?
“I’m sorry, I don’t understand.  So you aren’t connected to her, but there is still a connection?”
“Ammit would be unable to place such a line directly to me.  That kind of magic wouldn’t work on other gods. The connection wasn’t made with me, but with my Avatar.  The one being in the whole universe that is truly connected to their respective gods.”
Your eyes widened.
“Ammit made the connection with Jake?”
“Not with Jake, but with Marc.  My original Avatar.”
Your heart fell in your chest before it began to beat quickly.  You were sure Khonshu could hear it, keeping time within you.
“What does this connection do?  I’m still not understanding what this has to do with Jake.”
“It works with Marc’s awareness.  To Marc we no longer share our bond.  He isn’t aware I am still a part of him.”
“So Marc is still your Avatar?”
“Technically,” Khonshu responded, “Which is why Jake’s existence is to remain unknown to Marc. As long as his consciousness is unaware of our continued work then Ammit’s reach is blocked.”
“So as long as they remain oblivious to Jake…”
“Then the connection remains severed.  They all remain safe and Ammit remains hidden away in whatever oblivion she currently resides.”
You couldn’t believe what you were hearing.  You really could have ruined everything if you had told Marc about Jake that night like you had wanted to.
“What would happen if Marc found out about Jake?”
Khonshu hesitated for a moment.
“We don’t know.  It could be as menial as Ammit regaining only a portion of her strength or it could give her the power to undo the fabric of time itself.  We just don’t know.”
Your stomach began to turn inside of you.  This was far deeper than you could have ever imagined.  Either keep Jake a secret or possibly undo all of time and space.
“Now you understand?” Khonshu asked.
You nodded, turning back to look down at the excavation site far below. The heaviness of everything you had just learned began to push down on you physically just as it was emotionally.
“Do you feel better?” Khonshu asked.
“No…” you admitted, letting out a breathy laugh.
Khonshu shrugged.
“I’m not very good at dealing with human worries.”
You couldn't help but smile.
“Thank you for trying.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The night had turned out to be a cold one.  You were thankful Thoth hadn’t taken away your ability to summon your suit or you would have been freezing while you waited.
The two of you remained almost motionless long into the night.  Neither of you spoke until the last car had left the site and the last lantern darkened in the camp nearby.
“I think everyone’s gone.  No one will hear us if we go now.” You whispered to Khonshu.
“I believe you are right.”
In a breath you found yourself alone at the top of the ridge.
You looked down toward where the wall was located and saw Khonshu standing there.  Looking up at you and gesturing as if to say ‘what are you waiting for?’
You let out an annoyed huff and quickly took on your fog form.  Floating down the mountain until you were able to materialize in front of Khonshu.
“Thoth?” you whispered as soon as your body became solid again.
“I am here, Scribe.” he replied, appearing as they do, in an instant.
Thoth examined the portion that protruded from the mountain side. Placing his hand up to it.  Reading the portion of the word ‘APO..’ just as you’d stated.
“Do you think it could be…?” Khonshu started before Thoth raised his hand to stop him from continuing
“It is always a possibility, but we do not know for sure.  We need to investigate.”
“Well, there isn’t much at the moment to go on, other than this.” You started, gesturing toward the wall.  “The entrance could be buried anywhere in the…”
You were interrupted by a loud ‘crack’, looking to your right and finding that Khonshu had used the bottom of his staff to create a baseball sized hole in the side of the wall.
You held your breath and covered your eyes.
“There should be a corridor on the other side of this…is everything alright, Little Bug?”
“You just…I…” You tried to speak but found your words muddled.
“You humans and your attitude toward antiquities.  It’s just a wall.” Khonshu objected, feeling a little offended by your reaction.  “We needed an entrance.  I have just solved our problem.”
“Delicate plans have never been Khonshu’s strong suit.” Thoth added.
You nodded and finally caught up to your words.
“Right, you’re right. I’m sorry.” You finally said, still feeling the knot in your stomach.
The air that flowed out from the hole almost seemed to moan as the three of you stood and stared.
It was obvious you were all feeling the same sense of dread.  Thoth turned, clearing his throat to try and settle the quiet that had fallen between the three of you.
“We need to investigate further.  I’m sorry to say, my scribe. I believe you are the one who must enter alone.”
“Me?”  you questioned without meaning to.  “I’m sorry…I mean, are you sure?”
“Yes, Thoth.  If it helps I can accompany your scribe.  It isn’t safe for her to go in alone.” Khonshu added.
“No.  If this is what we think it may be then sending one of the gods in, especially one with the connection to Ammit wouldn’t be wise.  My scribe will enter alone.”
You nodded, still feeling the dread grow in the pit of your stomach.
“Am I allowed the full use of my abilities?  Or just the few?” you asked.
Thoth’s eyes narrowed a moment before his face relaxed.
“Yes.  You again have my permission for full use of your scribe abilities.  Now go, investigate and return back here as quickly as you can.  Any information you obtain can be vital to discovering the source of the whispers.”
You instantly felt the weight of your abilities returning as soon as Thoth gave his permission.  It felt like it did when you first received them.
You felt whole again.
You shifted into your frog form, easily gliding through the opening and into the darkness on the other side.  The faint light that seeped through the hole being the only source to light the dark corridor you found yourself in.
The air was beyond stale.  You’d never smelled anything like this.  A combination of dust and what can only be described as a heaviness that almost choked the air out of your lungs.
You let out a few coughs, trying to adjust yourself to the new form of oxygen that surrounded you.
“Hurry, Little Bug!  I do not wish to waste more time.  The sooner you venture in, the sooner you can return.” Khonshu coaxed, trying to be as supportive as he could.
The tip of his beak poked through the small hole as he spoke, covering up the only source of light.
You looked down at his beak and shook your head.  Summoning a small orb of light to glide beside you as you finally took your first few steps forward.
The corridor lead deeper into the mountain.
You kept your eyes open for anything out of the ordinary or miraculous but there was nothing to truly investigate.
Just the sand that quietly crunched below your feet and the bare walls of the corridor itself.
You made sure to tread lightly at first, in case there were any hidden dangers but as you ventured on you worried less and less.
The further you went the more you came to the conclusion that this was most likely not a tomb. Tombs of this size wouldn’t have had corridors that went on this long.  It could possibly be a temple or shrine of some sort but it couldn’t have been dedicated to one of the more important gods.  They would have at least had some sort of adornment or carvings placed on the walls.  A painting or hieroglyphs heralding praise to who the shrine would have been dedicated to.  The walls surrounding you had nothing painted on them.  No words or carvings.
The most remarkable thing on them was the metal posts that held the torches that still rested inside of them.
‘I wonder how much further the corridor goes?  Will I just walk on until I somehow end up back where I started?’ you thought, trying to keep your mind from wandering to other worries when you finally came upon what looked like a break in the wall to your right.
Cutting into the outer wall were two stone doors, sealed shut from the inside by a slightly smaller stone slab resting along it.  You laughed thinking about how frustrated that would make the archeologists once they were able to reach it from the other side.
The outer doors were just as unremarkable as the walls had been.
Just stones with simple carvings of reeds and patterns around them.  What was out of the ordinary was the stone that was used to keep the doors shut was decorated more than anything else that surrounded it.
The stone was not carved into a usual rectangular shape like others you had seen before.  This slab was cut into a circular form with what looked like a vine design carved around it, as if it were squeezing it.
You walked over to get a better look but was interrupted by the sound of a small vase you had accidentally knocked over.
You looked down and saw that you had indeed pushed over a small clay jar.  It wasn’t until you leaned down to pick it up that you noticed it was actually a canopic jar.
‘What is a canopic jar doing here?’
This was highly out of the ordinary for the ancient egyptians.
Canopic jars were used to store some of the vital organs during the process of mummification and would have been placed in the burial chamber beside the body.  So why was one just placed, or discarded, by the entrance to a shrine?
You turned the jar in your hands,  examining it when you finally were able to find a simple symbol carved into its side, labeling what had been placed into it.
Leb?” you whispered, “Wait…they didn’t extract hearts when they…”
The sound of more jars being knocked down took your attention away from the jar in your hands.
At least a dozen had been placed around the area by the entrance.
They were placed in small openings carved into the walls and just stacked on the ground around you.
All of which were marked by the same hieroglyph.
“What the hell…” you whispered.
You sent the small orb floating just a few feet above the ground, following the large number of jars until you were able to see the other corridor hidden in the dark. Opposite from the main door, now behind you.
Your breath stilled as you followed the corridor which led to a pair of huge doors.
You willed the orb of light to grow so more of the door was lit, but froze when more of it came into focus.
The doors were highly decorated with images of men, women, and children being led to their demise in various ways carved into the frame.  The door itself was adorned with gold and silver and made into the design of a massive snake, wrapped tightly around the sun while flames burned behind it.
You hesitated at the sight, lifting your hands to touch one of the carvings beside you but quickly taking it back.  The feeling you had just being near those doors was enough to make your skin crawl.
Another moment passed while you fought with your choices.  Try to push the doors open, or return to the gods to report what you’d seen.
Curiosity won over.
You started by pushing the doors lightly but the more you pushed the more it became obvious that they weren’t budging.
‘Thank the gods…’ you thought, feeling relief that there was no way to get inside.
At least you could honestly say that you had tried.
‘I think it’s time to head back.’ You thought, taking one last moment to return the canopic jar where it was before turning toward where you had come when you were stopped by a now familiar sound.
The whispers had returned but this time it was undeniable.  They were coming from the other side of the door and they were clear enough for you to finally understand what they had been saying.
What you had originally thought was the whisper from one voice echoed from the other side as a congregation of voices.  They chanted in ancient Egyptian as if in a prayer.
‘All hail, all hail, all hail the divine bringer of chaos.  All hail!’
The voices repeated their chant over and over as they slowly began to grow louder and louder.  Soon growing until it became a sound so deafening you could feel it within your chest.
You covered your ears, eyes wide and fixed upon the door as the sound continued to boom from within.  You stepped back into the main corridor and leaned against the slab resting across the main door, sure your eardrums would burst when, in an instant, the chanting stopped and again you were surrounded by silence.
You lifted your head and took your hands off of your ears while they still rang from the monstrous sound.
“I wonder if Thoth and Khonshu heard that?” you whispered, when you finally realized the vine that had been carved into the stone slab wasn’t a vine at all.  Rather it was the details of a snake.
“I’m beginning to see a pattern here…” you whispered just as a deep rumbling began to sound, shaking the floor beneath your feet.
Now the sound that pierced the silence around you was the deep rumbling sound of one of the doors opening with a loud creak of hinges long out of use.  Leaving just enough room for you to step in.
You regained your composure and just stared at the opened door, finally letting out a quick breath through your nose.
“Do I look stupid?  I’m not going in after that!” you almost teased, turning to walk back down the corridor when you were shoved to the ground by a pair of decaying hands.
You landed with a hard thud and only had a few seconds to react when a large khopesh was brought down where you had been, barely missing you as you rolled out of its path.
Quickly you jumped to your feet, turning and coming face to face with two guards dressed in ancient clothes.
Or what used to be guards, both on either side of you.
Their dried flesh barely hung onto their exposed bones as they continued their duty of protecting whatever was behind the doors.
They swung their khopesh swords at you.  Coming so close that you narrowly dodged their attacks, punching and kicking only for them to falter for a moment before coming back to continue fighting.
“I don’t have time for this!” You exclaimed, reaching out with both hands to grip at one of the guards heads.
You held on tight as you kicked at his chest, separating his head from his body which instantly fell lifeless onto the floor. You turned and threw the head in your hands at the other guard, who stumbled from the blow to its own head.  This gave you enough time to reach down and grab the  sword the first guard had dropped.  Swinging it up then down with one swift swoop, separating the second guard from his own head. It’s body dropping instantly to the ground with a loud thud.
“Damn mummies!” You whispered, throwing the sword to the ground. “I hate when they pop up like that!  Scared the crap out of …”
You were interrupted by another deep rumble coming from down the long corridor on either side of you.
You willed your orb of light to break into two and threw them in each direction down the corridors.  Illuminating the massive number of guards that were barreling toward you.
You let out an annoyed sort of growl, not wanting to bother with more guards.  You closed your eyes and exhaled, willing your body to turn into your fog form but nothing happened.  Just a slight pain in your head and nothing more.
“Oh crap!” you said, realizing that there was no time to even try again.  You needed to get out of there.
“Crap, crap, crap….” you repeated, looking around and quickly realizing that there was only one way for you to go.
Through the large doors.
You ran through the open door and turned, trying with all your might to push it closed.
Again, just as before, no matter how hard you pushed the door didn’t budge.
“No, no!  Please just…damn door CLOSE!” you cried out just as it slowly began to move.
You could hear the mummies getting closer and closer but you couldn’t get the door to close any faster than it was.  Agonizingly slow.
“C’mon!  You stupid door!” you called out just as it finally shut with a loud boom that echoed around you.
There was no second to spare.  As soon as the doors shut you heard the mummies crashing into the other side of it.  Pushing with all they had, trying to get in.
There was almost no use in you trying to keep the doors closed but you pushed your back against them as if your lone strength was enough to counter that of the dozens of mummies pushing on the other side.
The doors began to shift and creek as they were being forced open.  Your feet began to slide in the sand under them as you frantically pushed and moved to keep them from getting in.
It was no use.
You knew they would be able to open the doors soon enough and there was no way you’d be able to fight all of them off!
The fear built up in your chest as your heart beat frantically within it.
You couldn’t rely on your fog form for escape.  Something was blocking your ability to call upon that technique, but what?
You took a moment to focus but just as before you couldn’t change.  All you were able to do was summon a sharp pain in your head.
Just as it looked like the mummies would finally be able to push the doors open they just suddenly stopped.
The doors creaked back to a full close and you could hear them on the other side turn and march back down the corridors until again you were met with silence and darkness.
You slid down until you were sitting on the floor, trying to catch your breath.  Your eyes wide from the fear that followed almost being overtaken.
This place was turning into more of a problem than you would have anticipated.  At least you didn’t have a team of archeologists to try and save.
You let out a quick laugh at the thought of trying to explain an onslaught of undead guards to a bunch of grad students and volunteers.
You stood up, brushing the sand off of your suit as you tried to scan the room around you.  Barely able to make out anything in the dark.
You willed another orb of light to form before you. Sending it up until you were able to see it reach the ceiling high above.  You focused your energy and allowed the orb to grow in size and brightness until the whole room was illuminated.
What you found was beyond what you could have imagined.
Thousands of canopic jars, just like the ones you had found outside the doors, lay scattered throughout the massive room. All with the insignia of ‘leb’ carved within them, signifying that all these jars carried the hearts of people long dead.
The fear you felt when you saw the large number of mummies coming toward you was nothing compared to what coursed through your veins at this moment.
The ancient Egyptians believed that the only way to garner passage into paradise after death was to weigh the heart against a feather from the goddess Maat. Which is why they did not remove the heart during mummification.
To not have this organ in death meant an eternity of nothingness.  Oblivion.  No hope for rest.
The massive number of jars filled with hearts meant that these were taken by force.  What god would demand such an offering?
The walls were covered with more images of people being executed, killed, and sacrificed. Carnage, agony, and pain were depicted all around you.  Accompanied by hundreds of snake statues and carvings.
The feeling you got from being within this room was awful.  As if a shiver continued to course through your body and never let up.
You walked toward the center of the room.  Your gaze now fixated on the largest statue at the far end of it.  A hundred foot, golden statue of a snake god.  Its body tightly wrapped around the sun, just like the image on the outside of the doors.
The statue rested on a massive stone base that had the image of a script carved on the front of it.  You slowly walked forward to read the words that had been chiseled into the script.
It was the same chant you had heard earlier except now it included the name of what you assumed was the serpent god depicted before you.
‘All hail, all hail, all hail the divine bringer of chaos.  All hail…’
“Apophis…” you whispered, reading the name that followed the chant out loud.
The room began to shake and crumble around you as the chanting returned.  You stumbled back, trying your best to steady yourself.
It continued as you braced yourself against the shaking.  The disembodied voices surrounded you and grew in volume once again.
As if this wasn’t enough, you began to hear the added sounds of the mummies, who had returned and were pushing against the doors like they had before.
Again, there was no time.  You needed to get out of the shrine! Now!
You scanned the room, searching for another exit, another door, anything when you locked eyes with the statue before you.
The golden, bejeweled eyes began to glow when a cloud of dust grew from behind it and flew down toward you.  You had no time to move out of its way when it crashed into you. Feeling as if it pierced right through you like a sword.
Your body tensed as if a shock of electricity was now coursing through it. You gasped at the pain unable to even make a sound as you shook in an agony you had never felt before!
The orb of light high above disappeared, leaving you in total darkness.
You collapsed hard onto the floor.  Your body tensing and convulsing while you were helpless to do anything about it.
You began to writhe when you were finally able to catch your breath enough to start screaming.
Your screams echoed through the cavernous room.  Accentuated by the chanting that had surrounded you earlier.
Your arms and legs bent uncontrollably and your hands tensed by your sides. Your eyes were wide with fear as if they would bulge out of their sockets. There was nothing you could do but relent into the agony of every negative emotion and physical pain you had ever experienced.  All at once in a constant repetition.
You felt as if your body was going to be torn apart from the inside while you continued to cry out into the dark.
You were helpless to do anything as the doors flew open and the hundreds of guards poured in, ready to kill you for invading their shrine.
They barreled toward your screaming body.  Their swords drawn high above them but before you could bear witness to your own demise your body finally gave in and you fell unconscious.
All that was left was dark.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You woke with a shock, sitting up then instantly a shot of pain coursed through your entire body.
You inhaled a sharp breath before falling back where you had been laying.
Every part of you ached and your head was pounding worse than any hangover you’d ever experienced.
You found that you were unable to move most of your body.  At least not without being met with another shot of pain.
You slowly opened your eyes, scanning the room around you.  Your eyesight was hazy but you tried your best to focus on where you were when you realized you were home, laying in your own bed.
The sound of the Gus’ fish tank filter wiring in the background.
The pounding in your head made it hard to fully focus on anything around you.
You closed your eyes and tried to speak but your voice was hushed and quiet.
It was then that you felt a hand take yours.
The touch was warm and inviting.  Something unexpected in your daze but so comforting none the less.
You opened your eyes and strained to try and adjust your eyesight toward the person who sat beside you on the bed.
You were met by a pair of brown eyes looking back at you.  Filled with relief and accompanied by a small, crooked smile.
You let out a sigh and felt the tears well up in your eyes as one managed to escape down your cheek.
“Hi Jake…” you whispered.
Tina and Queenie traveled down into Newt's case, dragged him through his quiet little workshop and laid him on his bed, which looked more like a lightly used small mattress on an old frame that was falling apart.
"I'll take you guys back to the house. You watch over him, ok?" Queenie suggested.
She could hear her sister's warnings. She replied to Tina, "Don't worry, I'll stay hidden. Grindelwald has probably been found already." She smiled, trying to reassure her concerned sister. Tina nodded in response, hoping her sister was right. Queenie ran back up the steps to the world outside of the case.
Tina turned back to the unconscious Newt. She took off his burnt coat and his shirt. She noticed that his body was littered with recent angry red burns. He also had a nasty gash on his leg, his shoulder looked out of place, and his left hand looked like it was definitely broken. Not only that, but he bore old and new claw marks, bites, and rashes. She gasped at his scarred body and almost bursts into tears. He was underweight too, which made her even more uneasy.
She frantically looked for something to help with the wounds in his workshop's cabinets, making a racket with the clinking of glass jars and tools that tumbled to the ground in her haste.
"He must have something that might help with the burns," she muttered to herself in frustration. "I mean, his workspace has practically everything for medical emergencies."
After all of her efforts for finding a cure, Tina finally managed to find a jar full of ointment labeled Dragon Spit. She read aloud the small hand-written text underneath it: Apply to Burns To Reduce Inflammation.
She pulled up a chair next to his bed and sat down, fiddling with the lid of the jar. The cream smelt dreadful, and it was an unpleasant and clear molasses-like substance. Tina scooped the salve with her fingers and gently applied it to his charred skin with care. Newt stirred at her touch, flinching from the stinging pain. She soothed him, stroking his freckled cheeks with her thumb as he whimpered and continued to mutter to himself. He must be having a nightmare,she thought to herself.
She finished covering his wounds and the burns slowly healed, still leaving angry red marks all over his chest and arms. She quickly changed him into fresh pajamas and tucked him in. Newt's body still twitched and jerked from time to time. Tina lifted his pant leg and stared at the large gash that seemed to be covered in dry blood. It appeared to be getting infected; she knew it needed stitches…
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Queenie arrived at the apartment's entrance after racing up the flight of stairs, careful not trip in her high heels. She grabbed her pearly wand and gave it a wave, both unlocking the door and making it swing open. She quickly walked into the apartment and closed the door behind her before she put down the case. She was startled when she heard footsteps tromping up the stairs. Queenie cracked open the door, her wand ready to strike the intruder, only to be greeted by Jacob, who stood in the hallway panting. She relaxed and put down her wand before pulling Jacob into the room, slamming the door behind him.
"Here are…the…supplies," he huffed, handing Queenie a leather bag packed full of medicines, tools, and bandages.
She swiftly opened the suitcase's latches, and she and Jacob ran down into Newt's quiet workshop. They stared at the limp body of the injured magizoologist. He was wrapped up in a raggedy blanket and was spread out on an old mattress with Tina at his side. She turned to them with wide eyes. "He's worse than we thought," she said quietly, her voice filled with worry. She lifted his pant leg to show Jacob and Queenie the gash. Jacob frowned.
"That will definitely need stitches." He paused, thinking hard. "I don't have any painkillers for that." Tina bit her lip, trying to hold back tears. She turned to look at Newt's face, which looked contorted from his dream. He was already in so much agony, and she didn't think he could take anymore, but his options were limited, and she would try her best to make him comfortable at least, for they had a long night ahead of them.
"I can try to put a sleeping spell on him, but it might not work," Queenie replied. Jacob leaned in and began to clean the wound with alcohol. Newt's face squinted, and he let out a wail. Suddenly he sat up wide eyed and started to wave his hands frantically as he panicked. "Stop it! Stop it! Don't hurt her! Tina!" he screamed.
Tina stood up and started to push him back down, while Queenie grabbed her wand, gave it a flick, and shouted "Dormeo!"
Newt started to relaxed. Tina gently continued to push him down. His tear-filled eyes began to droop, and his head fell back down onto the pillow. He looked at Tina with sad eyes. He was desperately trying to fight the spell, so she started to stroke his hair. "You're alright, I'm fine Newt," she continued in a soft tone, "No one's going to hurt anyone, you're safe… just go to sleep."
He closed his eyes and began to drift back to sleep. Tina was worried about him and his dreams. She didn't know how many times she would have to reassure him that he was fine, and so was she.
Jacob sighed and began to stitch up the wound. Newt flinched with each stitch, but he seemed to stay asleep, much to Tina's relief. Jacob finished off the stitches and washed the rest of the blood off his leg, looking satisfied with his handywork.
"I think it will heal up quite nicely, but we should give him a break for now before we tackle his shoulder and hand." Tina nodded at Jacob. "Thank you," she whispered, still playing with Newt's sweaty ginger hair. He looked at Queenie with a smile. She giggled and said, "Yes, you're right honey, we should make something to eat, how about we make some strudels for dessert!" He nodded his head, but she already knew what he'd wanted.
Queenie faced her sister. "I suppose you just want tea." Tina just nodded. "Are you sure you're not hungry? You should probably ea.." Queenie abruptly stopped as her sister's thoughts told her no, she was not going to persuade her, no matter how much Queenie tried. Queenie and Jacob went back up to the house to make supper while Tina stayed at Newt's side, holding his swollen hand.
Tina sighed, looking at the man she'd grown to love. He looked so peaceful sleeping; she couldn't help wondering if he loved her too. She was always the confident and formal sister who kept to herself while Queenie was the beautiful and flirty sister who was outgoing and friendly. Men never liked her. She was too overbearing, while her sister could charm anyone she wanted. Tina just gave up on love and continued to focus on work, but now she loved the shy, genuine Newt so much and hoped he felt the same.
She snapped out of her daydream when she saw him start to squirm, a layer of sweat forming on his forehead as his brow furrowed. Tina got up to put a cold cloth on his forehead and noticed that he was burning up. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed that the Bowtruckle named Pickett had found his way under the door and had quickly scurried into the covers with Newt.
Tina couldn't help but giggle at the determined plant-like creature as he snuggled right beside Newt's neck. She sat back down, placing the cool towel on his head. He let out a sigh of contentment; the wet cloth felt like heaven.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Queenie and Jacob headed up the stairs. Queenie could hear Jacob thinking about his Obliviation. She'd totally forgotten and dreaded the moment she had to do it.
"We're not going to Obliviate you, sweetie." She turned, gazing at him with a reassuring smile.
He was taken by surprise, but quickly remembered she was a Legilimen or whatever Newt had called her. "What about M.A.C.U.S.A, the President said I have to be Obli…"
Queenie interrupted and said, "She never said when, and besides, the law is only in America. Heck, we could move to Britain and you can have your bakery. We could be happy together!" She stared at him with a huge smile and pleading green eyes. "I love you, Jacob Kowalski, and I know you feel the same." She batted her long eyelashes.
He contemplated the idea. He never would have thought that he would find someone again, after his ex cheated on him when he was in the trenches. He was heartbroken and gave up on the idea of women. His mind was changed when he'd met Queenie, though. She was beautiful but different from other good-looking women. With her kind personality and loyalty, she was just magical and… perfect! Queenie smiled at his thoughts.
He smiled and gave up. "Ohhh… Alllllright." Queenie squealed, and she grabbed his face. He was left breathless as she kissed him, but he went with it and pulled her in closer.
He'd finally found happiness…
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tina had just managed to fall asleep when she felt Newt begin to stir. Pickett ran off the bed, frazzled from being tossed about, and she saw Newt's face turn pale white once again. She thought he was going to be sick, so she quickly grabbed the trash bin and propped him up, sitting beside him with her legs stretched out on the bed as he retched into the bin. She rubbed his back "Shhhh… just let all out." After a few more dry heaves, he'd finally stopped and was gasping for air.
She took the bin. There was hardly anything in it, and she put a glass of cool, crisp water to his chapped lips. Newt sipped a little, then leaned back against the wall. Tina placed a pillow behind his back, and he flopped his head onto her shoulder.
Her arm was rubbing soothing circles into his back. She cuddled him closer as he tried to catch his breath, pale lips parted, groaning in exhaustion and discomfort. His left side was in agony and his leg burned. Newt's orange hair was plastered to his face and his eyes were sunken in their sockets. Tina was humming to him a tune that her mother sang to her and her sister when they were sick, and he seemed to relax and fall back to sleep on her shoulder.
Tina watched him as he continued to mutter and sob about the dream that he was having. She gave his head a long kiss, begging him to get better, but all she could do was put her head on top of his and continue to rub his back, humming her tune. Pickett jumped back up to snuggle into Newt's pajama shirt pocket. Tina suddenly felt exhausted and slowly began to close her eyes as she too fell asleep.
