This massive rant by its topic nature is sort of Nines-critical, so lemme start by saying that, in my own way, I love Rodriguez. (I was partially self-burning in the shitpost that ignited this rant because I SEVERELY exaggerated Nines’s canonical shadiness levels in my ancient fanfiction, and for no other reason than because I was a teenage edgelord. I am appropriately embarrassed, but only by my excess and melodrama, not by Troika’s characterization. I think the writing behind VTMB’s Nines is superb.)

When it comes to Bloodlines, I think he’s one of the most psychologically interesting profiles in the game. In fact, I could never get into LA by Night because they so de-toothed Troika’s vision of him. Not to say LA by Night’s Nines was a poorly-developed character in his own right, ‘cause he wasn’t at all, but “my” Nines will always be unapologetically and only Troika’s: boiling angry, viciously pragmatic, a survivor who doesn’t let anyone too close lest they see through him, whose over-the-top confident façade cracks a little more every time his back’s against the wall. Troika’s Nines is the epitome of greater VTM’s “fallen rebel” archetype, and even though we don’t get to see it on all playthoughs, that makes it even better and more believable.

But as with all characterization in Bloodlines, we have to read between the lines and between our own play styles a bit to piece the truth of the puzzle together...

Besides the direct evidence Troika gives us—i.e. the music cues, which are a bit overbearing if I’m honest (sorry, Troika! ilu); the absence of Nines in Rosa’s prophecy re: people you can trust; and the overt warnings Camarilla-aligned characters give us about him—the biggest red flag about Rodriguez, imo? It’s twofold:

the way the characters he surrounds himself with talk about him and the type of vampire he chooses to fill his den. Namely: Nines exclusively recruits angry, spurned, mistreated people who are younger and far less experienced than he is

those messy, ugly, fleeting moments where you see his toughguy everyman personality crack

So! Starting with point one:

THE PERSONALITY CULT ITSELF

We can’t deny that Nines does not surround himself with peers. He surrounds himself with followers—people who don’t challenge him in any way, who are fanatically loyal, who openly profess their worship of him and their conviction he could never/would never do anything wrong. If you listen to how Damsel and Skelter talk about him, it’s with frightening adulation, often repeating Nines’s lines word-for-word without truly understanding the argumentation behind them. (Damsel’s the main offender here with her “IT’S A PYRAMID SCHEME… it just makes sense, you know? It just makes sense!” And then, of course, she gets pissed and refuses to speak to you when you push her into elaborating.)

Nines has clearly made himself much more than just a friend-figure or a Sire-figure to them. He’s utterly and completely mythologized by the LA Anarchs, held up next to other politically mythologized names like George Washington and Ho Chi Minh. His followers love him… but there’s a pecking order, and like good body shields, they believe their lives don’t matter as much as he matters. And they love that, too. They want to die for Nines. They’re not just willing to or resigned to it; they’re eager to die. Damsel will volunteer this information the first time you meet her. She just can’t wait to prove herself by taking a bullet for goddamn Nines Rodriguez. It’s literally how she introduces herself to new people.

And yet Nines deliberately withholds his attention and time from his followers. He uses his attention as a reward, as incentive. He rations some care and reassurance and help—makes you feel good and gives you reason to crave his attention—and then he pushes you away, back into his adoring ranks until the next “two minutes” you earn from him in which you’re special enough for such an exceptional, important, cool guy to talk to. That’s a classic manipulation tactic, and a classic personality cult tell.

And Troika is so damn fuckin’ brilliant about it because they don’t stop at showing us that an Anarch-aligned fledgling might feel this way—no, they make the PLAYER also feel this way. On our first playthrough of Bloodlines, we’re desperate to talk to Nines. We want the reward. “Let me finish the plaguebearer quests… let me run to the Elizabeth Dane… I hope Nines talks to me again now! Quick, to the Last Round! Maybe if I say the right thing to make him like me, he’ll give me another free EXPERIENCE POINT!” (iirc he’s one of two characters who will do so, and the only one who gives multiple points.)

But at the end of the day, Nines is indisputably the leader of the Anarchs, and even fledgling figures that out. (“Sounds like you’re the Prince of the Anarchs.”) He’s very much the Baron of Downtown LA, even if he won’t use that language. As for the grating day-to-day management and leadership stuff that might make him somewhat unpopular among the Anarchs, though? He fobs all that stuff off on Damsel!

Damsel, his Minion No. 1—whom a lot of players will hate on their early playthroughs, because she assigns tough missions with little to no reward. Damsel, who has no real power role in the Anarchs and functions only to serve Nines. You help Damsel, and you do Nines’s work—i.e. you do the work of the Barony of LA—and he doesn’t even have to take the admiration hit by having to ask you himself.

There’s only one non-follower of note around Nines. It’s Jack, and by his own words, he’s not one of Nines’s people; he disparages them, in fact. And we’ll notice that Jack—who is stronger, older, and wiser than Nines—very much doesn’t talk about Nines the same way Nines’s followers do. While Jack doesn’t directly insult him and occasionally defends him, Jack also has a downright shocking response to the announcement of the Blood Hunt. When fledgling desperately asks what they can do to help Nines—Jack says, word-for-word: I could give a damn.

Something ain’t quite right about this place.

Moving right along:

NINES IS A FAKE ALPHA MALE WHO KNOWS HE’S GOING TO DIE

Part of why Nines is so attractive to someone scared and weak like our fledgling (or Skelter or Damsel) is that he seems utterly fucking untouchable—like nothing scares him, and that must be reassuring when two of your age-old enemies are moving into town. But Nines’s tough, cool, Devil-may-care persona outs itself as a protective shell, too… and this is another thing I think Troika handled so subtly and so well.

You’ll notice that even Nines’s voice is dramatically different in a couple different situations: when Ming Xiao is borrowing his body, when he’s afraid, and when he’s distracted or deeply disturbed. (A successful Malkavian mind read will really slam a crack in his coolguy persona. For a second, the nonchalance shatters and he childishly screams SHUT UP!)

But whether you Malk him or not: In those isolated moments, the Coolguy Nines Rodriguez we normally see frays. Physically, even! His accent loses its burr (that ballsy rural American everyman accent), shoots up to a higher register—and reveals a much softer voice than the one he uses in front of other people. No wonder; part of Nines’s charisma comes from his performance of masculine confidence, and even if it’s not a toxically patriarchal masculinity in the way we often picture it, the fact this performance cracks at all shows it’s not his genuine self. He’s acting. In the way a lot of toughguy men do—but for Nines, whose survival depends upon attraction now, he’s acting toughguy for his very life.

I think those little fray-under-pressure moments are the “real” Nines, or as close as we’re going to get: scared, desperate, worn-down, and very aware of his doom.

Now, all that said…

BLATANT FALLEN REBEL CONCEPT APOLOGISM

I don’t think we can quite throw Rodriguez into the same Mean Monster Morality Dungeon for Evil Vampires as other Big Bads in LA. This is where motivation comes into play, at least for me. We know Nines can be merciless and violent, and he doesn’t hesitate to sacrifice his own soldiers (namely, um, US!) to protect his holdings. But he does seem to have a twinge of genuine anger over injustices wrought upon “little people” (look no further than Nocturne)—one that seems like it stems from a sense of right v. wrong rather than sheer pragmatism. This stands in stark opposition to the rationed pacificism of characters like LaCroix, who simply doesn’t want the headache of cleaning up a pile of dead humans on his nightly to-do list.

Nines also, of course, just doesn’t have the same kind of disaster reach other Bloodlines Big Bads do in how much harm he can cause. When LaCroix gets up to some bullshit, he crashes the national economy. Nines, like, crashes a car into a corporate office window or takes over a street or something. Can’t really compare the two when it comes to the scale of damage done.

And even Nines Rodriguez is, for all his strategy, still an honestly angry person. Not all of him is fake—what’s troubling about him is what he’s willing to sacrifice and do to satiate his anger-passion. It’s the standard Brujah emotional-moral struggle. Even though I agree with much of what he says about bloodsucking late capitalist vampires (tbh he seems to hate vampires in general!), one wonders if it’s not partially the anger-passion that’s warped him into the façade of a noble leader he’s become. It’s not a pure anger anymore; he’s weaponized it in selfish, unhealthy, destructive ways.

But if he’s a fallen rebel—and since he is still apparently capable of some genuine anger and sadness—then we can infer he wasn’t always like this. He fell, and narratively, that’s key to understanding Clan Brujah. Maybe he fell in a way all of us angry rebel-types risk falling if we let our hatred of the bloodsuckers in real life outgrow and consume our care for the real-world little people.

I think we also have to appreciate that—as far as we know—the shady shit Nines does, he primarily does to prolong his power. But for a threatened Anarch like Nines, power doesn’t mean expansion or accumulation as it might for an ascending Ventrue; it primarily means survival. The Camarilla and Kuei-jin incursions into LA have numbered his days, and he can’t possibly have any delusions about this, no matter how much he swaggers. So he does what he can do with the skills and limited resources he has. He corrupts vulnerable, angry, abused people by giving them the appearance of friendship, family, and hope they can become stronger—much like effective gang leaders do.

If he’s morally nastier than other power-players like LaCroix in some way, imo, it’s here. It’s the intimacy with which he manipulates the people around him. LaCroix may lie to you; Strauss may withhold information from you; Ming Xiao may double-cross you. But none of them ask that you love them. That’s not their goal; that’s not how they operate. None of them expect or encourage anyone to happily die for them of their own free will. If they get you killed, you’ll die resenting them—resenting that you had to die, at all.

But when you die for people like Nines Rodriguez, you do it willingly, if only because you believed he cared somehow and that he’d fight tooth-and-nail for you, too. You believed that you were a member of his little outcast family—or that you would be, if you just proved yourself a little bit more. If you just fought a little harder. If you were just a little happier about having the chance to die for the cause. Maybe if you die for Nines, then Nines will love you, too.

I don’t think he does. I don’t think he will. If he’s a true fallen rebel archetype, I don’t know if he can anymore.

OCtober #8 p.2 - Who's your most developed OC?

Oh my, that's a question (as well as next one) that actually made me think quite a lot about my OCs, and I came to quite complicated conclusion that I simply can't choose one OC ¯\_(¬u¬)_/¯ For me it really depends on point of view. How should I even measure development? By number of universes OC exists in? Or just compare all of different versions like it were normal characters and choose the one with the most complicated/thought out story of them all? I came up to such division when I asked Ironic (@ironic-artist) who would he consider my most developed OC, after I already had my own answer ready. To my suprise, he said smth completely different than me which came from that difference in point of view, I thought about amount of universes, he thought about characters on their own.

What were the answers though? I said Takashi&Shinuo, with a bit of more of emphasis put on Takashi, who's more active when comparing the twins to themselves. Shinuo is more about thinking and planning, which often can lead to interesting outcomes and suprising decisions he makes in some universes, but Takashi's all about action, making decisions as he goes and pushing forward no matter what is happening. For example, as I said before in here, Shinuo's very likely to step out of confrontation if he thinks it may lead out to violent outcome or he'll try to put down emotions and talk things through. He often considers someone's motives and feelings first and possible reactions, which can even prevent him from interacting at all, while Takashi ditches that out completely. He reacts immidiately basing on his own judgement only or what he considers important and his stubborness often prevents him from giving up even for very long time till he reaches his goal, of course it sometimes leads him to conflict, but he's not afraid of it at all.

Both of them, as they always exists together (I can't kill my own OCs for real, even if I sometimes think about such tragic endings TuT) have TEN universes they exist in and almost half of them (4) were actually made for them and later expanded to other characters as well. Which kinda makes me want to make a chart presenting my way of thoughts when creating more AUs on their example as they're characters with most of these from all my OCs :'D Maybe tommorow I'll add such thing, but don't expect nothing high quality, I suck at drawing and I'll probably make it in paint x'D

Well, but what did Ironic said? Just to make you aware, Ironic is my ultimate soulmate-creating-OC-shitposting-buddy ever. Most of my OCs were created just because Ironic had another idea on his mind and he knows around 90% of stuff created about my OCs in last 10 years. There's literally not even one person who could be more reliable with such question ❤ And he said that such character for him would be either Circus AU Miyomi about who I talked here, or Sadao, about who I talked here, here and here. It was very suprising choice for me tbh :') While with Miyomi after thinking a minute or two I could agree, as this universe is quite widely developed and Miyomi's story continues a lot after she joins the circus, to the point where we even talked though possible bad-ends for it and created a world dedicated to it called "post-circus" which includes concept of reincarnation and soulmates. It also makes sense as developing her took me around 2-3 years before I was satistied with result and once again I included some details in her story with which I'm very familiar myself, which helped me make it more accurate. Sorry, I can't really talk about details, as Ironic wants to ilustrate it one day c: But I can summ it up as journey of a person who started from rock bottom, by pure determination and will to live turned from victim to offender, criminal, force feared by many. At first, it was just an outside appearance as she was completely closed out and stuck in her past, haunted and tied up by everything she did and lived through, not able to affect who she is or change it any way, but eventually found her way through trauma, in the end finding some peace and place for herself even in a world that seemed to forgot the meaning of kindness and forgiveness. Woah, I awakened my almost non-existent poetic sense :')

But Sadao? It kinda shocked me, because of his origins (random, only for fun kinda rp) I didn't take him seriously most of the time and often added ideas about him or his friends based just on funny sentence I or meme I found on internet >u>" But I can see why Ironic can see it like that, as despite of my wild creation process Sadao ended up as very datailed character, who evolves a lot though his story, I even consider him a type of person I would like to be myself, a definition of happy and healthy attitude. He started as egdy, misunderstood and neglected child, that through many mistakes and missteps learned how to take resposibility for another person at young age, which resulted in him becoming confident in his own abilities and made him able to stand up for himself and others. This bloomed a lot when he gained some space and free time only for himself, making him a force hard to stop once he decides he wants something- he finished school despite his past fails and got to university. He opened for new and other people which got him to reflect on everything he did to this point and make important decision about dropping out because architecture didn't make him happy. But getting to know new people, socializing and developing his relationships did and concentrating on that made him able to gain some peace of mind and eventually meet love of his life. Then all these past experiences helped him make important decisions and grow as person, gain more resposibility and finally see some value in stability. By himself he got to the point when he decided that he wants to finish his studies and create his own family, which was something he always lacked himself and that was kinda the last step he missed to really be happy and be able to say he feels whole, which when I think about it, made it all very wholesome c:

Cast your mutuals as Riverdale side characters

This has been sat in my inbox for ages because I’ve had loads of uni work to do and now I’m less busy I can actually put some thought into this. Sorry if I don’t mention you, chances are you’ve either slipped my mind or I can’t figure out who you remind me of. I’m also classing anyone apart from the core four as side characters because god knows the only people who have had adequate screen time this season are those four and everyone else has been sidelined and tbh there aren’t enough characters left alive in this show to exclude more people than that.

@rivendell101 - Alisha is like a mixture of Reggie and Penny in her own right and then when we’re together we’re like Sweets and Fangs. She’s sassy as fuck and I love it, she’s not afraid to throw down if people come onto her posts or into her ask box chatting the most shit, she makes the best sarcastic comments about the show and her shitposts are A+, all of which are a nice mixture of Reggie and Penny. When we’re together chatting it’s chaos like Sweets and Fangs. We talk the most bullshit in private, whether it’s ripping the show apart or making ridiculously funny headcanons about a Riverdale band ft dead Joaquin and the GK or what the Serpents would wear as Halloween costumes. It’s madness, and we egg each other on much like Sweets and Fangs. 

@thebetterjonesboy - Marian is Gladys to me. Marian is the cult leader and isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty, but she also looks good whilst doing it, much like Gladys. My gal Marian is not afraid to speak her mind like Gladys and will throw hands for the people the loves and stuff she believes in. She’s a strong woman, and Gladys is too so far. 

@a-l-c - Charlie reminds me of Kevin Keller. He’s the loveliest person and he comes out with the funniest remarks and stories that have me dying. His one liners are also phenomenal, much like the characterisation of Kevin. 

@s-s-southsideserpentine - Apart from the obvious choice of Jughead who is banned from this, Court also reminds me of Jellybean because of her similarities to her brother. Jellybean is sassy, talks straight and is a little badass who like Jug can hold her own but also has a softer side. 

@sweetpeasbabydoll - Jes reminds me of my gal Toni Topaz. I know we haven’t seen much of Toni this season but Jes will stand up for what she believes in and won’t take shit from anyone which I love, like Toni. Toni also sprinkles in a little sexual banter every now and again and we all know Jes is a queen at making things spicy in the fandom. 

@hugharekillianmesweetghoul - Pop Tate. Lou is so kind and pure, they’re almost always in a good mood and they always puts a smile on my face like Pop Tate does to everyone. They’re wholesome af and I don’t know anyone who has a bad word to say about them. 

@sweetpeas-sweetpea - Vannah is the golden boy Fred Andrews. That man can do no wrong, he is the epitome of love and care in Riverdale and Vannah is the same, she’s the sweetest angel. Fred Andrews is the only good man in the show, people may disrespect him but he’s still so nice and if that isn’t Vannah I don’t know what is. 

@humangrumpycat - Laurien reminds me of a mix between Josie and Cheryl. She’s so kind but she’s also so fucking funny and she calls it as she sees it like Cheryl does, but with the humorous shade that Josie uses. A great mixture of both characters and a great person.

Oh god, I was tagged by @paternaltendencies and I also saw my good friend @kunfetti do this list and I’m not gonna lie, I’m afraid my list is so painfully childish that you could barely guess we are all the same age... thank you for putting up with my fangirl ass and constant shitposting! You guys are the best! Haha. Anyways, here we go! (Only the top 3 get a gif)

1. KLANCE

*Insert oprah gif here*. I mean, does anyone who knows me even doubt it? Lol. We’ve had our ups and downs with this ship, but still they are my favs. It’s because of them I even started writing and honestly? It kinda changed my life? So they are the eternal champions of my heart <3 (also KICK ‘cause I don’t know when to give up). I don’t even have to add this, but the content is neverending and tbh, this ship is so full of talented people it’s INSANE. The impact still shocks me. And since I don’t interact with the core fandom, for me it’s always been like taking a stroll lol.

2. SHATT

This is easily a tie in the first place, after all they are my preferred combo. Listen to me, kiddos. This ship? Is precious. Y’all sleeping on it. I’m glad Matt has had 2 glow ups ‘cause every time, we’ve seen new people join and that’s GOOD. The content is precious. All my mutuals came exclusively from THIS ship, they are the chillest group of people I’ve ever seen and the quality of the fics is INSANE. Give it a try, and since I’m trying to convert you check these authors: Kunfetti, paternaltendencies, Eilera, luddleston, Martieek and some works from BossToaster. Also shatt sunday? A reason to live through the week. This is a pairing with history, cute af, infinite potential (and the last 5 minutes of s7 can suck it lol).

3. LOTURA

Have you ever shipped something that comes true and then is shattered to pieces the very same episode? No? Well we lotura stans have, and we deserve some respect! I knew 2 things from the very moment this purple goblin appeared: 1. I was adopting him, 2. “Tf you on, woman?” you ask in a terrified voice, pointing at me with your finger. I bring my pan and pot and smash them together to scream: THEY HAD A LOT IN COMMON. THEY DESERVED A MOMENT OR TWO. THEY ARE A TOTAL POWER COUPLE. But!!! Then they didn't cross a word and we had to retort to fics. Ty, vld. Still, good art and good fics and the fandom is quiet and the right amount of fucked up. Love them. Also a good part of my love for this ship I owe it to my good friend @conisaura who is an AU genius. Tenía que decirlo, bai.

5. ADASHI

I truly wish this one didn’t grow up so much on me, but hey! It could be worse!... wait, no, it couldn’t. It’s a great ship, I’m just weak to happy Shiro? Too bad the vld crew ain’t on that lol. Well, let’s be real, we know their relationship was hard and had already hit the bottom, but even if they weren’t meant to be a couple again, Adam’s treatment was awful. In the end, this ship stays in this place out of pure spite, ‘cause I’m THAT petty. And the art is truly gorgeous. You guys are gods, creating paradise out of nothing.

6. SHANCE

Tbh, this is the only sha**din pairing I can dig. And I dig it. Shiro deserves love, that's out of question. Lance does too. And I'm weak to pretty dorks, which... both of them are. I think it's a gorgeous pair, full of chemistry and badass, they totally would complement each other and I'm sure Shiro would let go of a lot of his issues with someone like Lance. Now that the paladins are older in canon, honestly my irks regardins this ship are all gone. Go for it guys!

7. CORALFOR/ALFORAN

Listen, old Coran loved that dork king and I totally ship them. Even he ships themselves (?).  And I love Coran a lot, so in the pathetic distribution of unnecessary couples last season, I wish they had the delicacy of giving some love to our fav Altean pan, at least. But nope. SO... COME TO ME, GORGEOUS MAN <3. (You wish I was kidding, right? I am not).

8. HEITH

I could probably fill this list with only all Hunky ships, he is just... Perfect. The perfect bf to anyone (where do I find a Hunk for me?). But to Keith? A match made on heaven, I mean, they are literally all the other needs in this life. After s7? Suspicions totally confirmed. I just... Love Hunk. And Keef. This is a good ship. Wish there was more content tho, especially sfw (the Hunk thirst is real here in tambler).

9. ALLURANCE

So low? You salty? Nope, I ain't. Not at this ship, at least. I love Allura dearly and I've always acknowledged Lance's crush on her (please, who wouldn't have a crush on her?). If I did this before last season tho, it would probably have been in adashi’s place, but right now I'm kinda... Eh. Unfair to judge based on canon, but I can't help it... Still, it stays in my list! If they give us good, wholesome allurance next season, I'm gonna be fine. That drawing bit at the end of s7, for example? That’s good. That’s what I want to see.

10. HUNELLE

Sorry Shay, honey, but you weren't there for too many seasons and s7 gave me sassy, tired power couple which is far more attractive to me than cinnamon roll couple :(. Still... I don't trust this Romelle lady, so I'm glad Hunky is smarter than me to choose partners lolol.

Blog Update : Where have all your quality content gone to, Melon?

*Does an exaggerated dogeza* I AM VERY, TREMENDOUSLY, HORRIBLY SORRY FOR MY UNDELIVERED CONTENT FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS ! I admit, this blog is turning into a trashcan with the amount of shitposting I do and this is unacceptable! Well, at least to my standards as I hardly post ANYTHING that contributes to the international DwD fandom for quite some time now. The truth is, there's been some rearrangements in my study schedule at school and many other personal family matters that I needed to settle which have recently drove me to the edge, causing my creative juices to remain at bare minimum and I just find myself feeling rather unmotivated, uninspired and various other negative emotions just come flowing into me :( Because of that, I've resort to shitposting instead of posting ACTUAL content that were on my bucket list nearly 2 months ago and I'm really really sorry for that. One of such content was my review on Roen's route, another big apology goes out to all my followers who were looking forward to that. I was originally planning to be done with it by the third week of March ,which was a school holiday period for me but something came up and my week was gone before I could indulge myself in writing up contents for my blog. Therefore, I've decided to write a full review of the game as a whole (instead of individually) with all my thoughts on each of the boys'routes, including those that I have reviewed before, Rem and Lindo. Rest assured that if all things go well, I'll be able to complete the game around my next holiday period which is in June and finish up the review by the end of it. As for translations, I'm afraid that we'll just have to wait and see for that as translating can be very tedious and I'm not sure if I'll even have the time to personally edit each screen shot at that . Aside from canon content, I'll be posting some large walls of text soon (I'm sure nobody misses them though :") ) about my thoughts on certain issues when it comes to the reverse harem genre in anime. Nonetheless, I'll be slipping in one about Rem too ( *cue the eye rolls* ) but only if I could ever recollect back my inspiration to write it (damn you writer's block) Last but not least, thank you for bearing with my shitposting all these time. I believe not all my shitposts are bad but nevertheless, I can't run this blog with just them forever. As much as I claim that this is a Rem exclusive blog, I do acknowledge that you all enjoy my general DwD posts more and will try harder to be more neutral in terms of that. The reason why I post more about Rem is purely because I want to spread my love for him and is by no means an attempt to force my opinions on him down anyone's throat. Though if you did come to like him more through my posts about him than I'm glad, I think that counts as a mission accomplished, sort of lol. That's it for now :D
