rereading the hunger games
PART 1
how did i forget that katniss and gale were entered into the reaping multiple times?!? they both entered themselves for extra rations so katniss had 20 entries at age 16 and gale had 42! at his last reaping
and prim and peeta still got chosen over them
re: gale- he was born a rebel. way more than katniss ever was & it’s clear from his first scene. he has so much anger for the capitol and hates things the way they are while katniss is more or less accepting of her circumstances if the people she loves are taken care of
aw i forgot how terrible peeta’s mother was :( poor bby willing to sacrifice himself since day 1
To this day I can never shake the connection between this boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope, and the dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed.
cue the epilogue
peeta’s dad gives katniss cookies! madge gives her the mockingjay pin!
katniss has never had a shower before. she describes it as “being in a summer rain”
Peeta snaps his fingers. ‘Delly Cartwright. I kept thinking she looked familiar as well. Then I realized she’s a dead ringer for Delly’
...I have never seen the girl with the red hair smile. But I jump on Peeta’s suggestion gratefully. ‘Of course, that’s who I was thinking of. It must be the hair.’
‘Something about the eyes, too’, says Peeta.
peeta is so quick on his feet and i love how katniss plays along. it seems so out of character for her but i love how he brings this side out in her. idk why but reading this again gave me butterflies. i missed their dynamic. also i dont remember how katniss knows the red headed avox??
so it seems like haymitch decided to give them their best shot after the tribute parade??
but when did he join the rebellion?? or was he always part of it lw?
i remember the rebellion crew forming after the 74th games but idk i could be wrong, we shall see
aw peeta and katniss sneak up to the roof for a private chat! im getting so emotional over them already i need to reel it in or else i won’t make it
ohhhh she saw the avox on the run with another boy. so do we think they were running to district 13? or away from district 13? s p o o k y
so peeta’s dad also talked up katniss’ hunting skills this reread is proving that mr. mellark was really her’ #1 fan. cute
its interesting how d12′s strategy was to present katniss and peeta as a team from the get—cinna dressing them like “twins” and haymitch telling them to be friendly with each other in public.
again i am so fascinated by haymitch. would love to know what’s going on in his mind !
It’s weird, how much he’s noticed me. Like the attention he’s paid to my hunting. And apparently, I have not been as oblivious to him as I imagined, either. The flour. The wrestling, I have kept track of the boy with the bread.
my thoughts exactly, katniss. i wonder why that is.....
ah the Careers. am i wrong in feeling just a little sorry for them? they spend their childhoods training for the chance to volunteer and die for entertainment :/ i know a good number of them win but still. there are no winners in this world
all of this prep seems completely unbearable. the parade. the training. the interviews. all while waiting to be slaughtered. such a mind fuck
Peeta sighs. ‘Well, there is this one girl. I’ve had a crush on her ever since I can remember. But I’m pretty sure she didn’t know I was alive until the reaping.’
‘So, here’s what you do. You win, you go home, She can’t turn you down then, eh?’, says Caesar encouragingly.
‘I dont think its going to work out. Winning...won’t help in my case’, says Peeta... ‘Because...because...she came here with me.’
!!! and we’re off to the races!!

so i picked up an ember in the ashes at the library this afternoon and i just finished it...
also i made friends with the librarians, they were so so so so nice to me and the one even walked me over to the YA section when I asked for directions and she was like “honestly I basically live in this section, i hope you find what you’re looking for.” honestly, cannot wait to go back tomorrow and be like hello it’s me i found exactly that because I’m done and need the rest of the series ASAP! But it was so great, they were also so shocked that I, a 24 year old young person, was interested and EXCITED to get a library card and i was definitely about to cry with how excited I was and I just love meeting people who GET THAT.
anyWAY SPOILERS FOR AN EMBER IN THE ASHES BELOW
Okay, first of all, I actually really liked Helene’s character and I was totally shipping her with Elias from the beginning. I mean, homegirl is a fucking badass--only girl besides the Commandant--in the school, totally holds her own and can defend herself. (I mean there’s the whole brainwashed into violence and following orders thing) but like they make a really good fucking team and I honestly did feel a little bad for her bc yeah she was like this dude’s number 1 for years and then someone else just came along... AND YES I KNOW THIS PLOT IS SO OVERUSED OR WHATEVER BUT I HAVEN’T LIKED THE CHILDHOOD LOVE INTEREST SINCE GALE IN THE HUNGER GAMES SO LIKE CUT ME SOME SLACK-- and i know yall aren’t going to give me slack for picking Gale over Peeta, believe me my whole life has been torture because of that stance, just save your breath....
But in the same regards, I also liked Keenan’s character and his whole Laia romance thingy. It’s nice when characters develop other relationships and slowly find their way to one another. Adds to the burn, and we all know I like a slow burn.
I was so so thankful to be back in first person after reading The Night Circus earlier this week.... I just really enjoy being directly implanted in the character’s heads and especially for a book that went back and forth between the two perspectives and then intertwining them, I was thankful for that insight.
I’m not going to lie though, the beginning had me pushing through a bit and I get it, again, this world needed so much exposition to really explain who was who and how they got to where they were... and starting off with the raid was great, but again, sometimes I just need to simmer in the world for roughly 100 pages before I start to become immersed in it. It’s very rare that I’m hooked off the bat, but I also like to give everything a chance, so ya know! in this case it worked! At first I thought I’d one and done this book, but now I’m super curious as to where the rest of the series is going to read so you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be tearing through it on my DAY OFF TOMORROW!!!!! Can’t wait.
I also could’ve seen Elias’ secret tunnel (secret tunneeeeeeel, secret tunnneeeeeel) being aid to them later in the story, called the fact that she could bring it to Mazen and then when that failed, that they would eventually escape through it, but oh well, I love me a secret tunnel and it’s nice bc Elias really did spend a lot of time digging it so I’m really glad all that work didn’t go to nothing.
Um also I love Laia’s transformation. I often feel like even timid characters are like yeah I’m going to fight, but I really loved Laia’s struggle with cowardice and fear. I liked seeing her debate with herself of what to do, having her brother’s voice in her head guiding her, asking herself what her parents would do and if she would even live up to that. It was all refreshing in a way because I feel like that period in other books either doesn’t exist or is very short lived, like maybe a chapter. I liked that the first book of this series is solely her trying to figure out if she wants to save or be saved. I also just really like her in general, she’s spunky but I also like that she doesn’t annoy me... you know what I’m saying? If you read YA you get me, right?
Also was a fan of the fact that they’re not 17 (at least they didn’t read like that, I’m feeling like early twenties, IDK maybe I’m wrong). I mean I am all for 17 year olds freaking out about which guy to choose and then having to save the world I. EAT. THAT. SHIT. UP!!!! But with darker themes mentioned in this book, I did enjoy the level up on the age spectrum.
But yeah, overall I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I had seen a tiktok saying that it was disappointing and a DNF for that particular reader, but honestly couldn’t be me. Yeah, tad slow at the beginning, there’s a lot to understand to understand the brutality of this reality, but I mean I’m glad I stuck with it, because those last 200 pages, oooooooh boy they flew by.
I’m interested to see where Elias’ and Laia’s relationship goes in terms of *wiggles eyebrows* their chemistry, because boy oh boy i am hereeeeee for it. Especially since so much of this book was like her: I HATE YOU him: her golden eyes were looking at me and that’s all that matters... and they’ll both be in new positions in this world and I’m interested to see them navigate it.
Do recommend if anyone is questioning it! (not that you’d read this all and then be like oh maybe i should after I literally just told you EVERYTHING) but whatever! And as always, I am always down for discussions, especially since I’m tearing through books right now and my friends are like we can’t keep up pls emily stop. hahaha sucks for them, escapism for the win! ok goodnight, gotta sleep so I can wake up and start storm and fury while waiting for my pick ups to be ready!!!!!
xoxoxox
#an ember in the ashes#emily reads books#laia x elias#me reading enemies to lovers is becoming a brand and im very high key here for it#and completely unapologetic#in the words of no doubt its my life dont u forget#xoxoxo#goodnight#an ember in the ashes spoilers#an ember in the ashes review#very sarcastic and informal review

001 | Send me a fandom and I will tell you my: The Hunger Games!
Ooooh, we’re going to disagree on this a lot. I already know it. To preface: i haven’t been an active member in this fandom for years and my tastes have changed a lot, but I haven’t gone back to reread or reevaluate my opinions on these. SO
Favorite character: Gale. I think he still is. I was a sucker for the angsty boys when I was 13. So nostalgia.
Least Favorite character: Snow. Totally disagree that Coin was worse. She was bad, but Snow literally sent kids to die for funsies. But also maybe Caesar Flickerman. He’s complicit! All the Capitolites are, but like. He gets a pass for trying to make the tributes comfortable, but NO. IT’S HIS JOB. To make them seem as cool for people to BET ON THEM. He’s a prick and I hate him and I hate that I kind of still like him.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Everlark. Galeniss (sucker for best friends to lovers, man.) Gadge. Johanna/Gale. And of course Finnick./Annie
Character I find most attractive: Finnick of course. Or Gale,
Character I would marry: Peeta. Look, I love my angsty kids, but I need some light in my life.
Character I would be best friends with: Hopefully Finnick. But probably Peeta or Prim.
a random thought: I wish we saw more of the Capitol’s opinions of the hunger games. I refuse to believe everyone was on board. I’m sure it was mainly those that were richest to capitalize on. I’m sure some thought it was barbaric. I’m sure many disagreed but were also like “meh”. I WANNA SEE THAT REBELLION.
An unpopular opinion: Fuck Katniss’ stylists. They’re nice, sure, but not good. They sent kids to die. Fuck them. Objectively, do I think they should have tortured and treated like they were? No, I’m very much anti-police, reform the prison system, treat people with humanity. But also? Fuck them.
My Canon OTP: Finnick/Annie
My Non-canon OTP: Maybe Gale/Madge. It’s pretty cute.
Most Badass Character: Johanna Mason
Most Epic Villain: Snow. Fuck him.
Pairing I am not a fan of: Haymitch/Effie. I’m so conflicted about people in the capitol. Because she’s likable, but also, fuuuuuuuck her. At least there’s character growth, though.
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Finnick and Annie man. Whyyyyyyy?
Favourite Friendship: Gale and Katniss
Character I most identify with: Maybe Peeta in that he tries his best to be good. But also with Gale in his “fuck the capitol”. Because seriously. Fuck them.
Character I wish I could be: No one really. I wish I had Katniss’ badassery without like, everything else
Thanks for the ask!

i just finished the 3rd part of mockingjay (yes this gets its own post), so i’m gonna scream about it
OKAY SO,
i just finished rereading a series that was very important to me as a teen, so im gonna just go off, okay?
SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE DIED...and the first time i read this book i was pissed. i was irate, okay? boggs, finnick, and then...prim... When I tell you my feelings were hurt!!!
But now, I understand that this is a war. There will be casualties. Finnick’s death being so quick still irked me but whatever. Prim’s death was a huge turning point and I think it was a great twist, I just wish we’d gotten to know Prim more throughout this book cause then it would’ve hit even harder. Like, she’s right there in district 13 and all we hear about is how Katniss is pissed at everyone or other’s accounts of events that Katniss was mysteriously absent from (seriously, a lot of info in this book was second-hand. Suzanne...Katniss is the protag remember? Show, not tell, perhaps????).
also, i didn’t realize that they put effie in the movies bc i guess fans liked her (ok, sure) and that she really wasn’t in this book at all lmao (big lmao at the haymitch/effie crackship btw)
speaking of the movies, they really fucked these books up huh? like, especially mockingjay. def didn’t need to be two parts (thanks hp). and jlaw as katniss...well...
REAL OR NOT REAL? - THE POWER THIS HAS
“your favorite color is...green?”
“yes, and yours is orange...not bright orange, but like the sunset.”
KILLING COIN. WHAT A GALAXY BRAIN MOVE.
I realize that coin is no better than snow, and the world would have likely ended up in the same place as it was before with her in power (“oh yeah, just one more hunger games, i promise. i’m sure the people before us, the oppressors, didn’t also go through this rationale”). i don’t really know if katniss came to the same conclusion though? would’ve loved to know more of her thoughts, but of course we have to hear it from other characters.
also, Gale isn’t really a bad character. I don’t hate him, and the bombs incident wasn’t his fault. But even he knew that Katniss could never look at him the same way and that’s kinda sad. It sucks that he just disappeared to district 2 to like...be a cop or something? idk
AND katniss’ mom disappearing AGAIN after prim died, like sis why not cling to the only family you have left this time??
AND haymitch is still an alcoholic and guess that’s okay??? huh??? like get my man some help? PLEASE?
NOW THIS RIGHT HERE????????
POWERFUL. WHAT A LAST LINE.
...epilogue?? what epilogue???
but seriously, what the fuck was that? katniss having kids never made sense to me, even as a teen who was just happy that her ship became endgame (fdsjldsdkjlgfakl). like, i see katniss as a person who understands that she is not capable of raising a child and that’s perfectly okay (i don’t think peeta would’ve kept pressuring her to have them either, but what do i know).
i think i wanted the end of this SERIES to show how katniss has changed, instead of summarizing the rest of her life?? like just show me katniss teaching kids to hunt and peeta running a bakery or something? like,,,,, things can be implied. Mrs.Collins just wanted to end her book on the line “But there are much worse games to play” and i respect that but we could’ve gotten there another way.
we saw katniss as a brave 15 year old who volunteered to save her little sister from slaughter in the first book. in catching fire we saw a 16 year old, tormented by her time in the arena, become stronger and and smarter and begin to understand how the system she was raised in could be dismantled. in this book, we saw a 17 year old become the unwitting leader of a rebellion. but we didn’t get to see her become her own person, not really. killing coin should’ve been the moment where we saw katniss finally declare that she wasn’t going to be a piece in anyone’s games anymore. instead we got an ending that relied too much on summation and less on an actual resolution.
overall, i don’t hate this book as much as i did the first time BUT catching fire is still that girl and the hunger games comes in a close second.
#im literally just blabbering at this point jklgdsfkljjkl#thg#IM DONE#onto songbirds and snakes? ...eh
