Human SQUIPtober 2019, Day 5: Dance
Human SQUIPtober 2019 Day 5: Dance
Ships Involved: StageDorks (Jeremy x Christine)
Setting: Post-musical AU where the SQUIP somehow returned as a human and was redeemed/rehabilitated by Jeremy (with the help of the rest of the squad), and lived with him having nowhere else to go. He looks pretty similar to how he looked in Jeremy’s head, and physically he looks to be around college age.
Trigger/Content Warnings: None
Author’s Notes: So I didn’t know this was a thing until yesterday, so I didn’t get to make anything for the first few days of Human SQUIPtober. I may go back and come up with a little something for those days if I get the chance (I’m a little bummed I missed Day 4 because I adore BMC Superpowered AUs). I can’t draw, so I’ll offer my writing instead! I’ll try to explore a slew of settings, ships, and themes for the days I get to participate in. Also, I’ve been in somewhat of a writing slump lately, so apologies if my writing isn’t up to standard. I hope you enjoy!
Squip had a few running theories about how and why he’d been brought back as a human. SQUIPs themselves had limited information on where exactly they came from, seeing as there was always a bit of bleed between their data and their hosts’ and it was too risky to have too much that could cross between them, so Squip had absolutely no idea if something like this had ever happened before. It wasn’t like he had his databanks to fall back on anymore, although he had retained a good amount of the knowledge he had from his time in Jeremy’s head. Granted, his now-human brain could only contain so much without making the facts a bit fuzzy.
He hypothesized that how much power he’d gained from syncing with so many other SQUIPs combined with the fact that Jeremy himself hadn’t been the one to drink the Mountain Dew Red, and perhaps the possibility of him having been a defective pill – seeing as he’d broken the protocol of serving his host in order to pursue a higher purpose – could have mixed together to reactivate him. He wasn’t sure the rest of Jeremy’s friend group’s SQUIPs were strong enough to have managed something similar.
But the sudden gain of an actual human body? That was the one part he couldn’t wrap his head around. He wasn’t sure it was worth agonizing over.
The more sentimental part of him – because, for God’s sake, he had one of those now – wondered if perhaps there were supernatural forces at work that wanted him to feel karma. Jeremy had gone through a careful procedure in the hospital to have his SQUIP removed, since it had still muttered and criticized him even after everything, although its voice had been nothing more than a hiss in the back of his head, and that was the last thing Squip had remembered. He’d begged Jeremy one more time to keep him, and then there was nothing. Before there was suddenly everything.
First waking up as a human hadn’t exactly been easy. He guessed the surgeons had merely tossed the SQUIP out in the garbage, assuming it’d be destroyed eventually since they still didn’t have a solid idea on what it even was, so when he suddenly came to, it was a very unpleasant awakening in the Beth Israel dumpster. Everything had hit him at once: the putrid smell of the waste, the disgusting texture, the burning in his eyes, the confusion rattling his mind. He was feeling, and after having been a supercomputer above simple human functions like the basic senses and emotions, it was too overwhelming. He’d ended up blacking out again almost as soon as he’d woken up.
Then, through a convoluted series of events that involved him being taken into the hospital and having to sweet-talk his way out – even with the nervousness that perhaps he’d inherited from Jeremy, it appeared he still had his charisma at the very least – he’d ended up seeking out Jeremy. He needed to get a grip, but he honestly had next to no idea what he was doing. Sure, he had all of the information in his head about what it meant to be human and what he needed to do in order to stay alive, but that was a lot different than suddenly experiencing everything for real.
More than suddenly being able to physically feel and smell and the like, what was most disconcerting was the menagerie of voices snapping at him in his head. There seemed to be two sides: the first were growling at him: “look how far you’ve fallen”, “you used to be incredible, now look at you”, “how pathetic, coming back to life only to be like this”. Then there was the other side: “do you understand the weight of what you’ve done?”, “you’re a monster, all you ever did was hurt people”, “the only reason you’ve come back is so that you can suffer the consequences of your actions.” It had him feeling so terribly small, doing everything he could to tune out the venomous thoughts. What was it that Jeremy had always said to ward him off? Loudest one is mine? That wasn’t particularly helpful when he knew that all of those voices were his.
Jeremy, of course, had been more than wary at first about helping Squip. He’d actually initially slammed the door in his face before seeing that Squip appeared to be on the verge of a panic attack on his doorstep, and he’d caved and ushered him into the house. He’d talked him down and gotten the story out of him, and reluctantly agreed to let him crash there for the time being.
Since then, Squip had improved immensely. He still had some old habits that stuck, of course. He was very blunt with his opinions, although he was working on that, since he’d unintentionally upset some of Jeremy’s friends with his comments. He was a perfectionist in every sense, a stickler for organization and cleanliness. He was, unsurprisingly, a tech junkie and interested in absorbing as much information as he could. He sometimes slipped into Japanese without realizing when speaking, since he found it easier to process things in what was technically his mother tongue.
The weight of his guilt always sat heavy on his shoulders, but he knew that the most he could do now was try and make up for what he’d done. It was in a SQUIP’s nature to serve and assist, and so he was always lending a hand. He’d become something of an elder brother to the squad, especially when it came to Jeremy. He was still protective over the boy as if he were still his host, and while Jeremy seemed to appreciate the attention most of the time now that he was used to it, there were plenty of times he had to tell Squip to back off and give him space to figure things out on his own. Michael had teased Squip for being as nosy as Jenna Rolan, which Squip still couldn’t decide if that was true or not. Or if he should be insulted or not.
Even with the intense remorse, though, Squip was learning to love being human. He was starting to find himself and distance himself from the cold, heartless machine he’d once been. One of the things he’d discovered he loved was music. Granted, he was sure he’d probably liked it before. SQUIPs were learning computers, after all, and he remembered observing everyone dancing at the Halloween party and deciding to jump in and analyze how the teenagers were having fun. And, perhaps somewhere deep in his code, he’d decided he was having fun, as well. Nowadays, Jeremy still sometimes made fun of him for the handful of times he’d caught Squip in the middle of his chores, playing music and swaying along to the beat, sometimes even humming or singing. Jeremy wouldn’t admit it, but Squip knew that he silently thought Squip had a nice voice, as well. It didn’t have quite as much of a surfer lilt as before, but it was still quite similar to how he’d sounded while in Jeremy’s mind.
Jeremy wasn’t much of a dancer, but Christine was. Now that they were dating – Squip sometimes felt even guiltier for being happy that, even after all the awful events, the pair had actually gotten together and were still in a healthy relationship – it wasn’t unusual for Christine to drag Jeremy into her antics. But the boy was so taken with her that he probably would’ve gone along with her if she’d asked him to rob a bank. Squip often ruffled Jeremy’s hair and teased him for how smitten he was, to which Jeremy’s face would flush and he would just swat him away while half-heartedly protesting.
Whenever Christine came over, Squip tended to hide away in his room. It wasn’t because he didn’t want to see Christine – everyone of course had been concerned at first about accepting him, but they’d mostly accepted him by now, seeing as he was rather harmless as just a boring old human and honestly it was amusing to them to see him learning how to be a functional person – but because he wanted to give the couple their privacy. While there was nothing scandalous happening, Squip knew that there were multiple occasions they’d ended up making out on the couch or just in general be lovey-dovey in that way only high school sweethearts could. In any case, he didn’t want to third wheel, although Michael seemed more than happy to take that role and hang out with Jeremy and Christine when the were together. Squip guessed that Michael often took the opportunity to embarrass Jeremy in front of Christine. You got a lot of dirt on someone if you were their closest friend for nearly thirteen years. You got equally as much dirt having lived in their brain for a few months, but Squip usually only poked fun at Jeremy when it was just the two of them in the house.
Today was one of the days Squip locked himself away so Jeremy and Christine could have their alone time. At some point, he heard the front door open then slam shut and he guessed that Michael had come to join. Maybe they would once again try to recruit Christine as their Player 3 to get through The Cafetorium, which they still couldn’t seem to beat. Squip had offered to help, but Jeremy had protested that Squip would give them an unfair advantage since he’d once been a piece of technology and that they needed to do it the human way. It was a bit silly, but Squip didn’t press the matter. He wondered if they’d ever get past the level. He supposed they’d have to eventually, after enough tries.
Christine normally came over for a few hours, or sometimes she’d stay the night and Squip could sneak out of his room once they’d settled in Jeremy’s– he’d been gifted the Heeres’ guest bedroom, as well as an old laptop and phone that Mr. Heere had managed to buy for cheap from his office – but normally, he just stayed holed up, only coming out if he needed to use the bathroom or if he felt like he was needed for a specific reason.
Squip was still learning how to tend to his basic needs like eating and sleeping – sleeping was hit-or-miss most nights, since either he was kept up by insomnia or kept restless with nightmares reminding him of what he’d once been – so he had set alarms on his phone to keep himself in check. He nearly jumped as his alarm reminding him to eat lunch went off and he scrambled to turn it off, frowning. Christine was over a little earlier than usual, but Squip didn’t really want to interrupt the trio downstairs by making himself food, even if he could just bring it back up to his room, although he’d rather eat in the kitchen. However, he knew that if he waited for Christine and maybe Michael, as well, to leave, he’d go without food for quite a while. So, with a sigh, he stuffed his phone into his pocket and opened the door.
He had expected to be met with the sounds of zombie groans and gunshots. What he hadn’t expected was to instead hear Hall & Oates blasting from the living room.
“What I want, you’ve got, and it might be hard to handle—”
Raising an eyebrow, Squip slowly made his way down the stairs, peeking over the railing towards the living room, and he blinked in surprise.
They were streaming music from the TV, and there was Christine on the couch, giggling loudly. And there was Michael, standing and grinning, taking Jeremy’s hand and twirling him along to the music while Jeremy, flushed in the face, laughed and let himself spin. Once Jeremy was facing Michael again, Michael took both his hands and moved in perfect rhythm – he loved his music, after all, especially his oldies that he’d dragged Jeremy down with him into – with the song.
“But like the flame that burns the candle, the candle feeds the flame, yeah yeah—”
It was only a moment before Christine kicked her legs in excitement and burst with that energy everyone knew her for, jumping up and cutting in so that all three were holding hands and just moving back and forth in an uncoordinated dance. Squip couldn’t help thinking of the memories he’d glimpsed of Jeremy’s Bar Mitzvah party, music blaring in a ballroom while teens and adults alike tried to figure out how to dance along on the shiny dancefloor under flashing lights. Michael had grabbed Jeremy back then just like he did now.
“You make my dreams come true!”
Squip found himself breaking into a fond smile as he watched. The three of them looked ridiculous, just dancing in the middle of the living room, almost bumping into the coffee table more than once, but they were having fun. Squip found that that was part of the human experience. Things didn’t have to have a purpose; people found joy in the most trivial of things, whether it was feeling the breeze tousling your hair on a summer day or deciding you wanted to break out into song and dance for no reason at all. Humans didn’t have to analyze and foresee plausible futures. They just acted. Of course, that often landed them in trouble, but other times they just threw caution to the wind in order to have a good time.
Deciding that the trio was distracted enough, Squip made his way down the rest of the staircase, attempting to keep his footfalls light, but of course the house decided to work against him and one of the last stairs creaked loudly. Swearing under his breath, he turned to see that the dancing had stopped and all three teenagers were gazing at him. He felt heat rise to his cheeks.
“I’ll only be a moment, I just wanted to grab something to eat,” he nearly mumbled, hurriedly making his way down the rest of the stairs so he could shuffle past. However, he froze when he felt something grab his sleeve and he turned with slightly widened eyes to see Michael grinning at him.
“C’mon, S, join us,” he insisted. Out of all of the squad, Michael was the last person Squip had expected to accept him. But Michael seemed so taken by the idea of a computer becoming a person that he no longer viewed Squip as a threat. Besides, as soon as Jeremy had warmed up to him, it was basically inevitable that Michael would, too.
Squip’s brow creased at Michael’s words. “Join you?” he echoed. “I wouldn’t want to intrude on your, er…whatever it is you’re doing. Little dance party.”
He peeked up to see that Jeremy and Christine had already resumed dancing, Christine looping her arms around Jeremy’s neck while Jeremy lightly had his hands on her hips. Squip was convinced that Jeremy spent 85% of his time around Christine with a blush on his face. Despite the fact that they’d been dating for quite a while now, Jeremy still seemed so surprised that he’d actually gotten the girl he’d been pining after since freshman year.
“On a night when bad dreams become a screamer, when they're messin’ with a dreamer, I can laugh it in the face—”
“You’re not intruding, I literally invited you, dude,” Michael huffed, pulling Squip towards the living room, causing Squip to stumble a step as he was forced to follow. He scrambled for a response. He felt like he shouldn’t be doing this, despite the fact that Michael was right and they’d quite literally requested he dance with them. But it still felt like he was interrupting. He couldn’t help loathing how feelings often contradicted one another or just happened out of nowhere.
“Michael—” he tried, only to get cut off by Jeremy snickering. The other boy was giving him a half-smirk.
“I think you’re just nervous because you can’t dance,” he teased.
Despite how far he’d come, sometimes Squip’s pride still got the better of him. And he knew Jeremy knew that. The boy was obviously goading him on.
And, like a stupid human, Squip fell right for the bait.
He pulled away from Michael and separated Jeremy and Christine – making sure not to shove them in the process – and wrapped an arm around Jeremy’s waist. The color in Jeremy’s already flushed cheeks only darkened as Squip dipped him down, giving him a crooked grin.
“You should know better than to challenge me, Jeremy. After all, I’m the one who taught you how to dance.”
“Geez, take a joke sometime,” Jeremy muttered, although there was no bite to his voice and Squip could see him fighting a smile as he pushed on Squip’s chest, getting the other to lean up so they were standing straight again.
“You make my dreams come true! Oh yeah!”
Laughing, Squip gave in and joined in the impromptu little dance circle. He swept across the living room with Christine, stepped in time with Michael, and even joined Jeremy in his awkward shimmying. When Michael and Christine started singing, he found himself joining in and soon enough Jeremy was, too. A few songs went by before their hands were interlocked and they were simply moving back and forth like the trio had been doing on their own before.
Squip felt a warmth in his chest that he recognized as affection for his dance partners, and he just felt light as air as all four of them made idiots of themselves. Being human could be so frustrating, confusing, overwhelming, and just terrible a lot of the time. There was so much to process, especially for him when he had never experienced any of these things before.
But at times like these, he couldn’t be more grateful that he’d been given the chance to come back and just love life. It reminded him that, even with the karma he was facing, it didn’t have to be all that bad.

My only problems with that bmc theory you mentioned is that 1) bmc was already really popular and 2) that’s kinda body shaming Roland :/ but yeah I agree that he can’t really sing for shit lol. And I hate how his go-to thing when he’s singing (it’s super evident in loser geek or whatever) is to just throw his arms out in a t pose
you should have problems with every part of that theory because everything in that post is about how the arguments are terrible and absurd, and i’m gonna use this opportunity to straightforwardly lay out why all that is, but first let me talk about the problems you did find with it
1) yes
the off-bway run of bmc is unusual because it did (and existed because) already have popular support/demand. they absolutely had no motivation to try to increase its popularity. they already had that fully covered.
2) yes
nothing wrong with having a preference or an attachment to the first portrayal you saw but there is no real reason to legitimately dislike or resent will roland’s performance to the degree that anyone wants to act like they have objective justifications for this. i will freely blame a ton of this on the fact that will r is not a super lanky guy who sort of looks like elijah wood’s fey woodland cousin or something, and he has a nasal voice, and the fact people find this less attractive leads to this extra resentment that gets rationalized as some kind of problem they have with his performance. surely i will come back to this but for now i’m going to argue against my own fake arguments
they didn’t approach will only because he was in deh and thus ~famous~ or famous by association or whatever. like i said in an earlier post, they were considering will for the part of jeremy even before will was considering himself for the part, as he said he didn’t consider auditioning for that role until it was suggested to him. and then he made it to callbacks, which means he was seriously considered and they already saw merit in the idea of casting him for the part. the fact that he didn’t get it doesn’t mean he wasn’t good enough: people Don’t Get The Part all the time and it isn’t for any certain reasons. for example, earlier will got cast in the black suits, while george salazar also auditioned and didn’t get cast, and yet we wouldn’t use this as evidence that george wasn’t necessarily good enough. not to mention that will would’ve been getting involved in deh at around that time of the bmc auditions, so evidently he was already good enough to be involved in like, any production.
also, the part of jeremy wasn’t the only change in cast between the productions. and they didn’t seem to leap on the opportunity to get Big Names involved, and in fact, they’ve said they didn’t want to do that. and, again, they did not need a popularity boost, they were in the unusual position of already knowing they had an audience. thus there’s no reason to believe that will’s casting, and will’s casting alone, was some sort of grab for increased attention on the production.
joe iconis had worked with will for years prior to 2018 and it’s just kind of ridiculous to suggest that will auditioned for his play and got turned down because he was terrible, and it’s only due to the fact that he was then cast in deh that made joe go “hm that roland guy can’t sing for shit and i’ve just been too polite to Not cast him in a previous musical of mine and work with him dozens of other times but he’s in a Popular Broadway Musical now so hmmm, maybe we’ll make a sacrifice to the quality of this show to get a popularity boost we don’t need” like
obviously it does not make sense. will was not Only offered the role because of being in deh. and, by extension, he was not offered the role in spite of any kind of inadequacy on his part. or in spite of anything at all.
also there is no indication that will connolly was just like, ditched or something. initial castings and casting changes are done for any number of reasons. and it’s not like joe iconis exactly has a reputation for ruthlessly screwing over people he works with, nor does will roland…and casting changes are basically inevitable if a show goes beyond one run or has a particularly long one. and it’s not unlikely people will have a preference or consider the first performance they see to be kind of the standard in their eyes, and there’s nothing wrong with the end of someone’s run / a casting change being bittersweet, cuz all of that is just how it’s gonna go. but like there’s no reason for animosity towards the replacement cuz then you’re gonna always hate everyone but the o(b)c
again like. maybe people really aren’t aware that will roland was cast in a musical of joe iconis’s back in 2012? the black suits? ben platt was there? george salazar wasn’t? will was 1/6th of the cast and did plenty of singing. and that was 3-4 years prior to him auditioning for bmc and getting the part for the off-bway performance, and as people tend to backhandedly point out, he only gets better with time and experience, and he was already doing great vocally in the black suits. he did that 2012 run, and then the run tbs had in 2013 as well. like, joe had plenty of experience working with him there. why would he think will is bad at singing.
also will was involved with joe’s work even prior to his graduation
will was also involved with bmc producer jen tepper’s work prior to his graduation. had a solo in the “if it only even runs a minute” show
they’d know how good will is. they had already been willingly involving him in various works for years, over and over, prior to will auditioning for bmc. the fact he didn’t get the part the initial time wasn’t due to them thinking he can’t sing, okay. and already right there you have the issue that apparently a bunch of randos figure they just have better judgment than the industry professionals.
also, you can prefer will connolly’s voice, but it’s not even A Valid Argument to say that will roland is a bad singer. like, this isn’t even about opinion. he is a good singer and this is an objective statement. He Is Very Skilled. his vocals Are Good. this is not opinion it is essentially fact. you may not like them but to say he’s bad is just to say either you don’t have the first clue what you’re talking about or are willing to skew your own perspective or just say whatever to pretend to justify this preference as “one of these is the performance i like better and the other is a performance that is inarguably Bad and Incompetent”
one thing is that will is so good that he makes it seem easy. he pulls off shit that you don’t even have to recognize as taking a crapton of skill. there’s all sorts of performances of his available and the way he’s able to emote during his singing isn’t just his also-strong acting, but it also requires the vocal ability to deliver quick shifts and jumps between differences in volume and pitch and soft/fragile vs forceful/angry and that requires a ton of skill and control. speaking of control and the stuff i’ve just said, there’s also a lot of smoothness to his vocals and consistency which reflects not only the quality of his vocals but also the control and endurance and knowledge of how to handle a performance within individual songs but also an entire show and also a string of shows.
like, dunno what to tell you. like i said before, these industry professionals think he’s good enough. the people he work with think he’s talented. i put myself through reading bmc reviews and i don’t remember anyone saying anything suggesting will’s vocals weren’t up to par, but i do remember a lot of acknowledgments about the opposite and how his performance is stellar and showcases great vocal talent and ability, whether or not the reviewers took to the rest of the show as a whole. and yet people who are mad about him not being will connolly have the take that he can’t sing. pretty wild how the people who would probably know better than you or me all consider will roland to be a very strong singer!! must be because they don’t know as well as various random people who resent will r.
it’s just a bonus when people argue he can’t sing the high notes. i’m guessing i need to say it’s called a falsetto? he has a gorgeous one and the way he’s able to snap right into it is kind of breathtaking? and the fact that joe iconis wrote lgw Specifically For Will Roland’s Voice, specifically designed to showcase and play to his strengths? and that this song, written by a professional composer to be ideally paired with will roland’s voice, features that falsetto so generously? hmmmmmmmmmmm
like, there’s so many amazing and beautiful performances of his online and like every available performance kicks ass and is certainly Vocally Competent but like, if you listen to this and think “he can’t really sing for shit” then you’re just telling on your own flawed judgment n Shit Taste lol…..like, again, to say he can’t sing is objectively incorrect.
also, there’s this.
i’m also very suspicious of people just interpreting his singing as “bad” because of the fact that his voice is just nasal. or suggesting that he can’t have as ~serious or dramatic~ impact. for unspecified reasons. but what i am going to specify as “because he has a nasal voice and i have an automatic association with this meaning that the character is unsympathetic and a joke”
i now slowly turn around and pull down a slide reading “jared kleinman”
again, not like the “will roland was only cast for clout” idea holds any water in the first place, but it’s just extra good how his character in deh seems to be written off by like, everyone, from reviewers to casual audiences to most more-involved fans of the show alike, and largely overlooked or maligned, despite all characters getting an equally sympathetic treatment, and all of the teenagers being very similar in what their flaws and weaknesses are and what their desires are.
like i and other people and mike faist will tell you, yeah jared’s character provides a break from Heavier scenes into lighter tone, which is necessary for good pacing, but that doesn’t mean that the character and the things he says aren’t serious or genuine. watch me avoid going off into a longer tangent about jared and bringing it back around to will roland: it just Sure Is Interesting that the character is one that tends to be seen as unimportant or even dispensable despite being absolutely crucial to multiple elements of the play. hmm
and anyways it’s kind of funny that you’d really have to already be a fan of will’s to like, make his casting in bmc make you care about bmc if you hadn’t already (#me, lol) and like. otherwise it’d be like “hey this guy who’s in bmc was in deh” “oh really that’s neat” and maybe it’d make some new people pay attention, but not to the degree that it would like, be expected to carry the show’s sales or anything lol. plus uhhhhh haven’t noticed the marketing saying anything about WILL ROLAND of DEAR EVAN HANSEN and you’d think that if they’d deliberately cast someone who sucks just cuz he had a part in a well-known show, they’d uhhhh take advantage of that? and yet.
that theory’s total shit is what i’m saying
and it’s interesting that will has a nasal voice and isn’t Serious Enough and his Singing is Bad
by interesting i mean total shit
i’m also totally gonna say that people are mad at will for not being super tall and super skinny and seeming attractive to them.
absolutely gonna say that. there is a real, documented bias towards considering someone seen as Attractive as being more sympathetic than someone who isn’t. for example i am tilting my head 270 degrees when anybody decides jeremy is an unsympathetic character. i am tilting my head 583 degrees when anybody decides that will roland’s performance as jared is the Unsympathetic one. my eyebrows are so raised they’ve just graduated college.
just yknow people are mad at will roland b/c they don’t find him as hot as will c and resent him for not seeming attractive enough and like, there’s the people who will at least own this and insult him for being too ugly for their tastes and their inability to keep their shit to themselves, and then there’s people who also have this inability to keep their shit to themselves but don’t wanna say they think he’s too ugly for their tastes and will instead be like mmmm dunno the way he follows the written changes to the script is bad………mmmmm idk he just can’t sing ://…………mmmmmmm his performance isn’t the same so uhh fuck him for not being will connolly………………://///……….
i don’t know if anybody sees him as fat rn, there’s this window of being Average where i truly cannot see it even though its supposed to just be Objective Judgment territory. but that sure never helps. also he just doesn’t have the willowy fragile body type of will connolly’s at all, no matter what. and that also cannot ever help. couldn’t’ve helped when he played jared either.
maybe it’s an utter coincidence that the majority of his film roles, where your body and face are always gonna get hq closeups, and in which we also have audio of one’s nasal voice, have him as Nerd Types who aren’t meant to be particularly sympathetic. not saying this is all him being typecast based on being written off from certain types of roles as characters meant to appeal to the audience / win sympathy, except, my eyebrows have now finished grad school.
in fact, although the realm of live theatre may be more “”forgiving”” of these superficial traits, it’s not as though will’s roles haven’t been largely uncool losers in various ways lol…but all of them have been sympathetic. he’s even mentioned how being cast as a romantic lead way back in school changed how people saw him. and here he is in a role where he feels like he isn’t allowed to be the main character even in his own life, and where he feels that he can be treated Like a well-liked, attractive person, but not necessarily be one. will roland is out here just outright saying how lgw is about himself and about you and about me (and for trans and non-hetero fans) and people are really out here going “he’s ugly he shouldn’t have this role” like, i’ll freaking slap you, lord
again. loser geek whatever alone is evidence that the take that He Can’t Sing is objectively false. and it is. move on. love yourself
also just thanks for mentioning the thing about throwing his arms out. that’s just like, one of the peak examples of “i resent will roland for not being will connolly but i need to invent justifications for this” and deciding that totally arbitrary things about him are reasons to be annoyed by him, and thus to think that there’s anything actually wrong with it. like, so he has a tendency to gesture with both arms out whereas other people don’t always do this? you’re mentioning loser geek whatever and it’s pretty crazy how when you watch him perform the song he actually employs a variety of gestures and you’re just picking out the one thing he does and going “ugh god you’re killing me will roland” like god….of all the arbitrary inconsequential things to focus your dislike on and pretend it’s a Legitimate Critique, this one’s a classic. if anything it’s a quirk that puts an individual stamp on things in the midst of all the other ways he moves and gesticulates during songs, but yeah, i suppose you could just decide you hate it. truly, between will roland putting his arms out and the people who see this as some kind of real flaw, whose reach is greater……..
anyways the point is none of you have any real reason to be bothered by will roland, and every “oh my god he’s so incompetent” take is ridiculous, and at least the people who outright insult him based on appearance are being honest about their bullshit since it’s all insults anyways. the oc album is right there. the performance with will connolly also continues to be right there. everybody just might consider why they’re so resentful of will roland for having the part, and also consider getting over it.

We are being Silenced, We are being Blinded
By Frances Bailey
"Phantsi ngokudundiswa nge Sibhulu phasti, phantsi ngokudundiswa nge Sibhulu phasti!" Down with being taught in Afrikaans, down with being taught in Afrikaans!
The day is June 16, 1976, the day of the Soweto uprising, 10 000 students march on Orlando Stadium in protest, their song no longer silenced. They have banded together to speak out. To speak out about injustice, racial oppression and their desire to be educated properly.  "We will not be silenced" said Silindile Khanyile, current Bachelor of Arts student at Rhodes University in 2018, in echo of past sentiment.
From the time white people set foot in Africa, roughly four hundred years ago, the black population was brutalised, enslaved, oppressed, stolen from and forced off their land and into cheap labour, all by white hands. Power was taken by the white minority while people of colour were subjected to harsh and authoritarian doctrines. White supremacy dominated society and existing political, social and economic systems were taken over and replaced. Western culture and ideology, white privilege and success prevailed at the expense of all things natively African. Black people were forced to assimilate the dominant white culture they were beaten down, degraded, and suppressed as were their cultures, ideologies and identities.
This was the landscape from which The Black Consciousness Movement (BMC) was built. This movement was the inspiration for the June 16 protests and was first sparked in 1969 with the creation of the South African Students Organisation (SASO), headed by Steve Biko. BCM was designed to provide a platform for Black people to discuss issues particular to them and as a motion against white supremacy. Education was seen as the way forward, as playing a fundamental role in mental and physical liberation and in fostering awareness around Black existence and identity.
The word 'consciousness' means the state of being aware of and responsive to one's surroundings and refers to a person's awareness and perceptions. BMC encompasses this idea, "Black Consciousness is to understand the injustices that have happened to black people," said Khanyile when asked about what the movement meant to her, "it's to be aware of how black people have been treated over the years, over the centuries.”
While the values and principles of BMC sought to emphasize awareness of the self, the other and societal injustices and ongoings, the ideology also transcends this as awareness was emphasised to supplement the recognition and acceptance of black identity. According to Khulile Mjo, a second year B.A student at Rhodes, Black Consciousness is a mentality and lifestyle.
From this we begin to see that Black Consciousness plays an important role in identity. Identity is an important part of being human; it is a necessary. Every individual seeks to discover and create an identity, one which is uniquely theirs. Identity is multifaceted, while it is based in personality many aspects work to define it.
Identity is expressed in language, music, values, art and literature; it is adopted through family, religion, ritual, public life and material culture. The acceptance and acknowledgement of all these paradigms are important in fostering one's identity and in discovering one's place in the world, but with the forced assimilation of white culture, black identities were squashed.
"We grow up thinking white people are superior...we need to boost our confidence," said Apiwe Maqungo, a second-year BCom student. BCM sought to encourage pride in one's self as a black individual and in everything which that entails. This boost in confidence lies in the acceptance of one's self, which is difficult to achieve when you are constantly disregarded and put down. The state of education before 1994 further worked to alienate black people from themselves, black students were forced to learn in a white language and the curriculum did not encourage their aspirations, skills and interests. Education did not attempt to mould confident and successful black individuals. Black people were put at a disadvantage and sadly this is a reality which has persisted till today.

We may fly the rainbow nation banner and celebrate our new democracy. Many of us may think we are free, equal and united, that issues of racism have been snuffed out and that we are a multicultural society which embraces all identities and which gives everyone equal opportunities for education and empowerment. While it may be true that some progress has been made, the issues of subjugation and inequality are not in the past. “They are still prevalent. I know so many people who haven’t had opportunities, who sit in a classroom with 50 to 60 other people”, said  Khanyile,“the majority of Black people still live in townships”.
With only 40,6% of Africans employed this isn’t surprising. The Matric rate for black students is 10% and while the national average of household expenditure on education is R2 531 per year, black households spend less than that at R1 656 while whites spend three-times the average at R8 069. “Some don’t know about the struggle. It is different in each household, but finance is a common issue," said Zandile Gcumisa, a first-year BCom student at Rhodes.
Tumblr media

This is the current reality for many black individuals. If more than half of our population is oppressed, than we are less than half free.
When asked about where they first learnt about black consciousness only Andile Fani, a B.A student at Rhodes, said she had learnt about it in school. This was in 10th grade history class and she felt it was negatively focused and not taught in enough depth. “The only time we learnt more about other cultures was during heritage week,” said Gcumisa. Every participant remembered learning about Hitler, but not a single one had read any works by Steve Biko, the most popular figure of Black Consciousness, and were less exposed to Es’Kia Mphahele, Njabulo Ndebele or Miriam Tlai. In fact, many of these names aren’t known by black and white individuals alike, but ask about Shakespeare, Einstein or the French revolution and you are sure to get a nod of recognition. While access to internet does aid ignorance, those who do not have this access find themselves in a difficult position.
Tumblr media

The fact of the matter is that our schools perpetuate inequalities. They are westernised, and they continue to alienate black students. “I’ve been to white schools but then at the same time as being in white environments but growing up in a township, it made me confused,” said Khanyile. “I was trying to fit into a society to which I didn’t belong...I wasn't white enough and I wasn't black enough.” It would seem that the voices of the Black Consciousness Movement have become whispers. Our society is ignoring the wisdom and struggles of our past leaders or purposefully avoiding them.
South African schools are not doing enough to encourage students to engage with texts from other cultures and perspectives and because of that we are ignorant to them. All of the interviewees felt that Black Consciousness, histories and texts from people of colour should be introduced into the curriculum, starting in primary school. They further felt that everyone should have this knowledge and be involved in the discourse of Black Consciousness. “Everyone should be involved, we need to be inclusive of each other, it’s all about love," said Maqungo.
While this sentiment may be encouraging to some, not everyone will agree. The introduction of more inclusive texts may foster awareness and recognition of people of colour's cultures, existence and identity in black and white people alike, but white people’s involvement remains a controversy and understandably so. Some felt that white bodies should be allies, while people of colour take the lead; that black people should be dictating the necessary dialogues and discussions while white people listen. Some may even feel that white people should not get involved.
Whatever the case, I think it should be noted that while this is a “black issue”, it was created by black people, and it cannot be remedied by black people alone. The ideal nature of society dictates that we all depend on one another and the potential of our country cannot be reached when more than half our population is at a systematic disadvantage.
Furthermore, given that identity is also influenced by external factors and other people, this continued disregard for blackness will perpetuate in day-to-day life and interactions. This could be counteracted if more people, despite their race, are better informed in terms of these multicultural realms of thought. However, the issue at hand is not simple or straightforward and is subject to much discourse. I merely wish to establish questions and provoke thought. The answer to whether black consciousness is an important, teachable ideology depends on all South Africans. It is imperative that we make an educated decision.

Blog week 5- Reflect on cultural humility
The 5thweek of fieldwork consisted of 2 days, a full day and one-half day. This was because of the June 16 holiday which we were all happy about as we needed the break. The full day on Monday had a group session as per usual, which was very exciting as it was something the clients were eager to participate in and overall, it was a successful group session, my client was only able to attend 5 minutes of the group session as he had personal issues to solve. The group session opened ways to enable our therapeutic skills when handling clients, and we worked well as a team and it was not just focused on the person in charge of the group. I gained so much knowledge firstly on how to choose an appropriate activity for clients to suit their client factors and ways to adapt it according to the individual session. During the morning and during the day, we talk about our different cases with the supervisor which is very helpful as we gain more insight into other conditions so that when we face them in the future, we would be familiar with it. On Thursday was very interesting as we started the day with listening to a podcast which was very insightful on how to see the many opportunities out there and be able to grab them as we are UNTAMED.
Sessions with my client went well. This week went well, and it improved my therapeutic skills and clinical reasoning as I did something that I have never done, which was scary at first but a good learning opportunity.
Reflect on Cultural Humanity
To me cultural humility is showing a humble and respectful attitude toward individuals of other cultures that pushes one to challenge their own cultural biases, realise they cannot possibly know everything about other cultures, and approach learning about other cultures as a lifelong goal and process. It is when we provide to therapy to individuals regardless of their culture, and also taking their culture into consideration when planning intervention. For example, Mr M is an African man who believes that some occupations are designated for women and some for men, my disagreement to his point of does not hinder the way I treat the client, I am not biased because we do not have the same views. So, I tend to include occupations that according to him men do and not force him to do those that he does not participation, such as home maintenance and meal preparation. During therapy I was also eager to learn more about his culture, where he would educate me more about it. ‘Cultural humility involves understanding the complexity of identities — that even in sameness there is difference — and that a clinician will never be fully competent about the evolving and dynamic nature of a patient's experiences.’Shamaila Khan, PhD March 9, 2021.
Planning and implementing intervention for my client
This week’s sessions were aimed with helping with community reintegration and helping client learn ways and techniques to how to deal with situations like falling if he is alone with no one around to help him. On Monday client had to transfer from wheelchair to plinth and was given a wood box which was at a higher level to transfer to from the plinth, the client first encountered problems doing this as it was movements he was not used to, and he perspired a lot and his nappy tore which required him to go back to his room to change it. The client returned to therapy which showed the clients eagerness to participate in therapy. The session helped improve the client’s upper limb muscle strength as he is most dependent on it to function and required static and dynamic sitting balance. The session on Thursday was more intense as it required the client to move from the plinth to the bench and from bench to the floor and back up using the same steps. The client struggled with the first round and started perspiring and required moderate assistance when having to move from the floor to the bench and from the bench back the plinth. There was a moment where the client almost fell when he was on the bench due to poor trunk control and balance, good thing I was behind the client and was able to quickly handle client. The sessions were very nerve racking as this was the first time doing something so intense with a client, but as the client improved his ability to participate in the session, I felt good as a therapist and knowing how this would help the client when discharged really does warm my heart. We also did outdoor mobility with client where client had to move through the ramp independently.
Feedback received from my supervisor and how will I change intervention next week
The feedback I received from my supervisor was immensely helpful. She gave me feedback for when I did the session and for future session e.g., she gave me structuring feedback, to think critically about the structuring and how I should be realistic but also considerate of the client’s conditions and commodities. I had struggles on what and how to report assessment finding and the supervisor was able to help me narrow things down by highlighting what is most important about client.
‘Year’s end is neither an end nor beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us’ Hal Bolard. As much as we are all exited that our block is almost over, we are dearly grateful for it, I for one have learnt so much within this block, on ways on how to handle clients, and how structuring is important during sessions and to always be on the look out for ways to grade an activity to suit the client functional level. I have also learnt the importance of ensuring that the client is always safe and under watch to reduce the risk of dire consequences or any further harm to client. I have learnt how being client centered is important when planning intervention and the use of the multidisciplinary approach, working with other health care professionals to reach the same end goal. I have also learnt how being culturally diverse is important and not being bias against client’s values and beliefs.
It has been a difficult, nerve wrecking, scary, knowledgeable but wonderful block with an amazing supervisor to help guide us throughout the journey. THANK YOU.
THE END…

via Today Bharat Kangana Ranaut's recent remark comparing Mumbai to Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) has drawn the ire of the ruling Shiv Sena which also controls the BMC. Here's how the events unfolded throughout the day. Amid high drama and media frenzy, Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut, who has been involved in a spat with Shiv Sena over her recent remarks comparing Mumbai with PoK, returned to the city even as the Bombay High Court stayed the demolition process initiated by the BMC for alleged illegal construction at the actor’s Pali Hill office. Upon her arrival from her hometown in Himachal Pradesh, Kangana, who has been given Y-plus category security from the Centre, fired a fresh salvo at Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, saying his “ego will be destroyed” the way her Bandra home was demolished. “Uddhav Thackeray tujhe kya lagta hai? (what do you think?) My home was demolished today, your arrogance will crumble tomorrow. Thus is the wheel of time, it keeps changing,” she said in video message. Kangana Ranaut and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut have been involved in a war of words after the actress had earlier compared “Mumbai to Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK)” and said she “feared Mumbai Police more than the movie mafia”. Earlier in the day, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) team demolished “illegal alterations” at the actress’ bungalow at Pali Hill in Bandra with a bulldozer and excavators. However, the HC expressed displeasure and stayed the demolition process after Ranaut moved the court challenging the notice issued by the Mumbai civic body. Ranaut had purchased the bungalow in 2017 and had renovated it in January this year. The BMC on Tuesday had issued a “stop-work” notice to Ranaut for alleged illegal construction, under section 354(A) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act, to stop the ongoing work inside the premises and produce the permissions for the illegal constructions. Reactions from political leaders in support and opposition of the actor kept pouring in. Here’s how the events unfolded throughout the day: BMC starts demolition, then stops The BMC began demolition work shortly after 11 am. A BMC team reached the bungalow at Pali Hill in Bandra with bulldozer and excavators and demolished alterations made sans the civic body’s approval. BMC officials arrived this morning to demolish portions of her bungalow even as the actor was on her way to Mumbai. (Express photo by Amit Chakravarty) Soon after, Ranaut tweeted, “I am never wrong and my enemies prove again and again this is why my Mumbai is POK now.” She also posted photos of BMC staff engaged in the demolition work at the bungalow, which she had purchased for Rs 20 crore in 2017. Before the demolition work on Wednesday, the BMC posted a second notice outside her bungalow, informing her of the action being taken by the civic body, an official told PTI. Bombay HC stays demolition Kangana then moved the Bombay High Court, challenging the notice issued by the Mumbai civic body for “illegal construction” at her bungalow and sought a stay on the demolition process. Later in the day, a division bench of Justices S J Kathawalla and R I Chagla stayed the demolition process and directed the civic body to file an affidavit in response to the plea. The court posted the matter for hearing on Thursday. “We cannot help but mention here that if the MCGM would act with similar swiftness qua the numerous unauthorized constructions, the City would be a completely different place to live in,” the bench said. “The corporation appears to have overnight woken up from its slumber, issued notice to the petitioner (Ranaut), that too when she is out of the state, directing her to respond within 24 hours, and not granting her any further time, despite written request, and proceeding to demolish the said Premises upon completion of 24 hours…though the manner in which the BMC has proceeded to commence demolition work of the said premises, prima facie does not appear to be bonafide and smacks of malafide,” the bench said. Babur and his army 🙂#deathofdemocracy pic.twitter.com/L5wiUoNqhl — Kangana Ranaut (@KanganaTeam) September 9, 2020 Kangana said the civic body should focus on the shoddy state of roads instead of targeting her bungalow. “BMC, these are mumbai road and all you are concerned about is DEMOLITION of an actress house who is exposing mafia. KUDOS to you..!! #DeathOfDemocracy,” Kangana tweeted. She also posted a photo of a Mumbai road riddled with several potholes. Shiv Sena shows black flags to Kangana Kangana reached Chandigarh airport in the morning to board a commercial flight to Mumbai. The ‘Queen’ actor reached Mumbai at 2:30 pm and was greeted with black flags and slogans from protesting Shiv Sena workers. But there was support too from workers of the RPI(A) and Karni Sena, who also gathered at the airport. Later, she posted a video message on her social media, addressing Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray, where she said his “ego will be destroyed” the way her Bandra home was demolished. Kangna Ranaut, Kangna Ranaut security, Kangna Ranaut Shiv Sena spat, Kangna Ranaut PoK, Kangna Ranaut Pakistan, Kangna Ranaut news, Indian Express Kangna Ranaut in Chandigarh amid high security on September 9, 2020. “Uddhav Thackeray, ‘tujhe kya lagta hai’ (what do you think)?. You think you have taken a huge revenge by destroying my house in collusion with the movie mafia. Today my house is destroyed, tomorrow it will be your ego. The wheels of time keep changing,? she said in a video message in Hindi. “Uddhav Thackeray, this cruelty and terrorism, it is good that it happened to me because there is some meaning to it,” she said in the video. तुमने जो किया अच्छा किया 🙂#DeathOfDemocracy pic.twitter.com/TBZiYytSEw — Kangana Ranaut (@KanganaTeam) September 9, 2020 The actor said she was working on a project on Ayodhya but now understands the pain of Kashmir Pandits and will also make a movie on their plight. “… also government has banned any demolitions in Covid till September 30, Bullywood watch now this is what Fascism looks like #DeathOfDemocracy #KanganaRanaut,” the actor tweeted. BMC action creates doubts, says Sharad Pawar Amid a row over BMC demolishing parts of Ranaut’s Pali Hill office, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar Wednesday said illegal construction in Mumbai was not a new thing and the action by the civic body in view of the present situation “gives space for creating doubts in the minds of people”. “I do not have much information on the action taken by the BMC. However, illegal construction in Mumbai is not a new thing. In view of the present situation, taking action gives space for creating doubts in the minds of people. The BMC has its own rules and officers may have taken action as per what they felt was right,” Pawar, whose party is part of the ruling alliance with the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, said. Without naming the Bollywood actress, Pawar also said undue importance was being attached to the statements made by Ranaut, claiming people were not taking her remarks seriously. “We give undue importance to people who make such statements. We need to see the impact of such statements. In my opinion, people do not take such comments seriously. The people of Mumbai and Maharashtra know the efficiency of the Mumbai Police,” he said. “If someone talks about equivalence with Pakistan, there is no need to take the person seriously and no need to pay heed to such people,” Pawar said. BJP, Shiv Sena react to Bombay HC order BJP MLA Ashish Shelar said the Shiv Sena-controlled BMC showed promptness in demolishing parts of the actress bungalow. “The action has been taken out of revenge,” PTI quoted him as saying. He asked the BMC why action was not taken last year when the structure was built, if it is illegal. “This shows you will be saved if you come with us (the ruling party). Action will be taken, if you dont. That is their approach. The MVA government led by Thackeray is playing politics of vendetta,” Shelar alleged. He further said illegal constructions have come up some metres away from the chief ministers residence. “But we cant see action being taken there. It is unfortunate that action is being taken only selectively. This is an egoistic government,” he said. Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy tweeted, “Tell Kangana to keep the faith. We are with her in this struggle.” Maharashtra NCP president and Irrigation Minister Jayant Patil tweeted that some ‘people’ comparing “this great city and our police force to that of Pakistan is outlandish” and it is just to “gain publicity and limelight”. “It is painful to come across people who are not grateful to what Mumbai and Maharashtra has to offer – in terms of the opportunities, women safety and tolerance,” he said. “Mumbai is the mother that does not discriminate. Let us all be respectful to the spirit of Mumbai and the dignity of the elected offices of the state,” he added. It is painful to come across people who are not grateful to what Mumbai and Maharashtra has to offer – in terms of the opportunities, women safety and tolerance.#UddhavThackeray#BMCMumbai — Jayant Patil (@Jayant_R_Patil) September 9, 2020 Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur condemned BMC’s action, saying she ‘is a daughter’ of the state and she should get a ‘proper atmosphere’ to work in her field. Speaking in State Assembly, Thakur said his government has provided security at Ranaut’s Manali residence and 11 CRPF commandos would accompany her wherever she would go in the country as part of the Y-plus security provided by the Centre. Himachal Pradesh will do its best to ensure her security, he added. “Kangana is a daughter of Himachal Pradesh and she has brought laurels not only to the state but to the entire country,” he said in the assembly, adding she should get proper atmosphere to work in her field. Kangana’s lawyer says BMC lying about illegal construction Kangana’s lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui claimed the BMC was lying about illegal construction at the bungalow. “The BMC is lying. It’s lying on record (about illegal construction at the bungalow). They said they have given stop-work notice. But such notice is given when the construction process is underway,” PTI quoted him as saying. “There is no construction going on at the place. It was over about one-and-a-half years ago,” he added. Siddiqui said the BMC officials did not stop the process even after being told that Kangana had moved the Bombay High Court against the demolition.

As with everyday lifestyle, parents are actually the first collection of self defense for children's protection when they are utilizing the net. Radical Studies of Pedagogy. How Can Teaching be Interdisplinary?
How did radical education shape todays artists, art world and art schools? This is the question so many artists and teachers must keep in mind throughout the process of pedagogy and practice. To answer this question one must look at practices of radical institutions such as Black Mountain College and the Bauhaus, and consider a lecture by Randy Lee Cutler titled "Radical Education: From Bauhaus to Black Mountain College", as well as articles and readings discussing both colleges, democracy within the education system and ideas about radical education and experimentation.
The first post-secondary institution to introduce the concept of experimentation was the Bauhaus. The Bauhaus was an art institution founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany in 1919. The Bauhaus focused on the power of geometry, which is apparent in the design of the original building, which is very structured and geometric with clean lines and simplistic structures. The Bauhaus' main focus of practice and pedagogy were upon interdisplinary practices, experimentation and collaboration, gathering hope and inspiration from the post war era it was situated in, as Gropius states in "Manifestoand Programme of the State Bauhaus." "Architects, sculptors, painters – we all must return to craftsmanship! For there is no such thing as “art by profession”. There is no essential difference between the artist and the artisan." From this statement it is clear that Gropius intended for the Bauhaus to combine the idea of the artist and the craftsmen into one, which allowed students to discover new areas of art and practice, also allowing collaboration between students with different abilities. This new practice was considered a radical form of pedagogy because it was so different from other teaching and learning methods of other institutions, however this radicalism put the Bauhaus on the map as an experimental college, and as Virginia Woolf states in her article "Three Guineas", "Obviously, then, it must be an experimental college; an adventurous college. Let it be built on lines of its own. It must be built not of carved stone and stained glass, but of some cheap, easily combustible material which does not hoard dust and perpetrate traditions." The Bauhaus created students interested in architecture, metal work and typography, breaking the traditions of isolation between artisan and artist, challenging individuals to consider materials differently.
Following the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933, in the same year, Black Mountain College opened in Ashville, North Carolina. Black Mountain is another college that also focused on innovation and experimentation, as Randy points out in her presentation, “there was a desire to create progressive education”, once again a concept seen as radical. BMC existed on its own terms, pushing communal living and classroom structure and cross genre arts education, the public responded strangely, considered the college too radical. One of the most important concepts within BMC was that students are the centre of a proper education; students were left to their own devices to attend class and create pieces that explored the simplicity of basic forms. In videos such as “Fully Awake”, students describe their experience at the school, and practice as working artists in the art world. Lorrie Goulet, describes her experience as life changing and a time of consideration of how the art school functions, in the film she states. “So many great artists went there as students and so many great artists taught there. How did they all get there? What brought them there? And it had to be because it was the emphasis on thinking like an artist, the simplicity of the community life, the openness of questioning and looking for new ways of doing things, not accepting the old traditional university kind of thing.” One of the most important pieces of Goulet’s statement is the idea of questioning, this is what BMC students focused on and was the driving force behind the school because it allowed students to question how the art school functions when artists have full access to create and change the art world, as well as shape their practice.
Bauhaus students created art that was accessible to all areas of the public sphere, Bertrand Goldberg was a student during the Depression area and describes his experience in "The Bauhaus Symposium" by Kevin Harrington", "It was the marriage between art and industry that the Bauhaus somehow stood for. And it was to make art available to Everyman. In the midst of the Depression, one would have gone to the Bauhaus if one wanted roots. I was happy it existed." Obviously students who attended the Bauhaus graduated with the understanding of artist and artisan as one craft, giving the idea that art can be created by individuals from all areas of practice and skill and involve collaborations, keeping in mind that art must be open to the public eye for consumption and critique.
This concept has a huge impact on art schools of today, as Randy discusses in her lecture "Radical Education: from Bauhaus to Black Mountain College." Randy brings to light the importance of interdisplinary pedagogy and learning, stating that "traditional disciplines are unable to address specific issues within the art world." Interdisplinarity is a concept the Bauhaus prided itself on, and obviously other art schools followed suit, Emily Carr, for example, allows students to take courses from outside their major, giving students the opportunity the collaborate, bring different skillsets to the table and learn from one another. Black Mountain College students continued this concept of radicalism pushing the limits and shaping 20th century modern art. Artists such as John Cage, created, “Theatre Piece No. 1.” This collaborative piece was based on chance that focused on taking individual works from Black Mountain students, and having each artist presenting simultaneously while an audience watched. This was later coined as the first “happening” which Cage became known for, this was the first multidisplinary event that pushed performance art to the forefront. Performance art is widely recognized throughout the art school today and is practiced, and studied, by any artists who also include other forms of art such as video or photography.
In conclusion, with the research, lectures and readings presented it is clear the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College, although initially considered radical, profoundly shaped the art world, artists and art schools of today. Through radical ideas such as performance art and interdisplinary practices of craftsmen and artist, the art school today has become a place of exploring these avenues and progressive creation, allowing artists to collaborate and explore new options within their practice. If not for these radical schools, the art school would be stuck in the traditional university ways of teaching, learning and developing within a society.

These 5 ‘Powers’ Can Boost Your Golden Years
After a lifetime of hard work, thousands of baby boomers are retiring in record numbers across the globe. Like any life transition, embarking on the transition from working life to retirement can be wrought with challenges and stressors, especially for those forced into retirement. Yet, it also opens up a window of opportunity to take a few simple steps to secure a healthy and happy retirement.
After retirement, some people plummet down the slippery slope to physical and mental health decline and premature death, while others are rejuvenated by the positive health effects of retirement and protect themselves from the bad, bolstering health and happiness and prolonging a vivacious and meaningful life into ripe old age.
The good news is that science is gradually unearthing the many secrets to a happy retirement, providing the retirement planning blueprints needed to capitalize on the health benefits of promoting positive lifestyle change on the healthy transition to retirement.
The Power of Belief in the Golden Years
Believe the hype; believe the stereotype… well the positive one anyway. Research shows that people that believe in positive and happy retirement stereotypes (e.g. living a hopeful, active, involved, healthy and meaningful life with more time for family, friends and pleasurable activities) have been shown to live up to 7.5 years longer than those who believe in negative retirement stereotypes (e.g. living a hopeless, inactive, uninvolved, lonely and meaningless life).
Some estimates indicate that simply believing in the golden years being golden provides a 41% decreased mortality risk and reinforces a happy retirement being a reality.
Other research indicates that fear of being lumped into an ‘old and unhealthy’ stereotype, known as healthcare-stereotype threat, can lead to healthcare avoidance and is linked with poorer global physical and mental health.
It has been suggested that simply knowing the powerful effects of believing and/or fearing stereotypes is half the battle. Reading this blog article may be enough to help people beat the negative effects of stereotypes down and invite the golden years in.
The Power of World Views
The hostile world scenario (HWS) is a personal belief system regarding the perceived threat to one’s own physical and mental health and wellbeing, which is more severe among minorities that suffer from stigma, such as members of the LGBT community.
Healthy uses of the HWS system include serving as an internal monitor of both actual and potential threats and adverse circumstances in the individual’s life, allowing vigilance towards dangers and maintenance of a sense of safety and wellbeing.
If this system is over activated however, it can lead to an overwhelming sense of a catastrophic world and is associated with a whole load of negative health outcomes that put both mental and physical health in jeopardy.
These include:
Having increased difficulties in activities of daily living (e.g. eating, dressing, bathing, preparing a hot meal, shopping in a store, managing money etc.).
Movement difficulties (e.g. reaching or extending one’s arms above shoulder level, lifting or carrying weights over 5 kilos such as a heavy bag of groceries).
Worse physical symptoms (e.g. resistant cough, swollen leg etc.).
Worse medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, osteoporosis etc.).
Worse depression symptoms.
Less satisfaction with life.
Less social activities.
What makes having an overactive and negative HWS system be strongly predictive of poor mental and physical health in old age is currently unknown. Some suggest that an overactive HWS may amplify stress-related thinking leading to ill health, and/or that the HWS is actually a reflection of future predictions of the self and therefore may be like a self-fulfilling prophecy, a route to self-sabotage and self-defeat.
Conscious aging practices have been shown to help transform negative world views into positive ones that benefit health and wellbeing in retirement years. Conscious aging and world view transformation involves exploration of the pivotal role that our world view plays in how we see, understand and behave by using a multitude of exercises, such as meditation and nature-walks, that encourage self-reflection, self-discovery and reshaping of our world view.
The Power of Exercise
Research shows that some people get more physically fit after retirement, while others put their physical and mental health and wellbeing at risk, as well as their families, due to further increases in sedentary behavior after stopping work.
For those that exercise regularly, benefits include: lower blood pressure; improved balance and reductions in mobility difficulties; improved health for those with conditions like diabetes, heart disease or arthritis; stress management and improved mood; an improved memory and prevention of cognitive decline.
However, research cannot yet tell us with any confidence what exactly helps some people get into healthy exercise habits after retirement compared to others. Nonetheless, it is resoundingly clear that adopting daily lifestyle habits, hobbies and activities that promote physical activity and avoid sitting down for long periods of time is a must for those wanting a healthy and happy retirement.
The Power of Socializing
It has been shown that how long a person expects to live is linked with future mental and physical health. Sadly but fortuitously, for lonely older adults, reminding themselves they have not so many years left protects against their feelings of loneliness fueling depression.
Rather than adopting this otherwise bleak outlook on life to keep one’s sanity, multiple lines of research indicate that working on having a thriving social life doesn’t only prevent the negative impact of loneliness, it can truly do wonders for health and happiness following retirement.
Meta-analytic evidence shows that people’s social relationships can predict how long they will live, and in fact, is a stronger predictor than other health behaviours such as physical exercise, smoking or alcohol consumption. Other studies also link vibrant social lives in older years with reduced depression and enhanced cognitive health.
A brand new study found that social group memberships in retirement, like book and lunch clubs, or arts or exercise groups, are associated with reduced risk of premature death. Specifically, retirees who had two group memberships prior to retirement had a 2% risk of death in the first 6 years of retirement if they maintained membership in the two groups, a 5% risk if they stopped attending one group and a 12% risk if they lost both groups. Furthermore, for every group membership that participants lost in the year following retirement, their experienced quality of life 6 years later was approximately 10% lower.
All in all, joining social groups and engaging in social activities is a smart move to ensure happy retirement. Also, if the social activity also happens to be physical, reinforce positive beliefs in retirement and reinforce positive views of the world it’s a win, win, win, win in support of healthy and happy retirement.
The Power of Driving
There is no legal age at which you must stop driving, but driving cessation is beginning to be considered an inevitable transition in the years around or following retirement, depending on one’s health. Some people may have decades of retirement years before stopping driving is on the cards, for others it may come hand in hand with retirement.
However, very few plan to stop driving and those that don’t make plans are at higher risk of poorer health, depression, institutionalization, attending less out-of-home activities and reduced productive social engagement, and the kicker, death. In fact, in one study, nondrivers were found to be four to six times more likely to die than drivers during the subsequent 3-year period following driving cessation.
Finding ways to maintain a future nondrivers’ productive roles and out-of-home activities may be key to preventing the negative effects of driving cessation.
