Note
Considering the level of detail tf one gave us, if a sequel decides to continue with that and gives us bot’s possibly getting paint transfers due to clashes with each other and I think I will simply perish. The art that will be made. The edits. If Optimus leaves a make on Meg’s I will never recover.
Speaking of Meg though, do you think has paint on in his fully cogged w/ Megatronus prime’s cog form? Compared to D-16 he seems to be much more exposed metal, so I’m curious if maybe they’ll show how long the war goes on by showing Megatron loosing that shiny luster he had and his metal growing more dull.
This is my new "if I win the lottery" plan xgusgyushgdugdjgdg
Oh my god. That would be so fun.
Can you imagine the faintest traces of paint transfers that don't get buffed out? The evidence of their many, many fights over the coming millennia? They've changed each other's lives so much.
Megatron does have his usual secondaries and highlights, so it seems like the silver is probably silver paint, though I can imagine it getting EVERYWHERE in paint transfer situations :)
Another thing I think should be a thing is injury continuity, I know these guys can get repaired from some serious stuff, but I just think it's amazing when there's physical proof on the characters' designs that yeah, this thing happened, and it's just another aspect of their frame now. Hell, I think part of the reason scars have a certain meaning with transformers IS connected to how much bullshit can be repaired so thoroughly, and it's interesting to see what some mecha keep. 🥺

This Is The Highest Resolution Snowflake Photo Ever
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the many photographs former Microsoft CTO Nathan Myhrvold has taken of snowflakes.
Nathan Myhrvold
Why would former Microsoft chief technology officer Nathan Myhrvold spend a year and a half building a custom 100-megapixel carbon-fiber super-cooled sapphire-lensed LED-lit super camera to take pictures of snowflakes?
Because he can.
Because he wanted to.
And … because snowflakes are much more important than we give them credit for.
“Snowflakes are something that we don’t think of as food, yet most of us in North America anyway, spend our whole summer drinking melted snowflakes, right?” Nathan Myhrvold told me on a recent episode of the TechFirst podcast. “Without snowflakes, we would have no water. It is the form of snow that allows us to meter it out over a period of many months.”
But most likely, just because it’s cool.
Myhrvold is not just the former CTO of Microsoft. He’s the author of multiple cookbooks detailing the art and science of cooking. He worked with Stephen Hawking on quantum theories of gravitation. He’s published peer-reviewed research on subjects as diverse as paleontology, climate science, and astronomy, and is currently working on a massive multi-gigapixel picture of the Milky Way galaxy.
MORE FOR YOU
(170,000 frames and counting, for that.)
And he’s been interested in photograph for a long time.
“When I was a kid, I saw pictures of snowflakes … these beautiful faceted crystals, almost like gems but more fragile than gems,” Myhrvold told me. “As I got older, I sort of learned why they look that way. I also became a photographer and I started taking pictures of food and of landscapes.”
It turns out that taking pictures of snowflakes is hard.
Really hard.
Listen to the interview behind this story in the TechFirst podcast:
Sure, there’s the obvious problem: melting. But snowflakes don’t just melt. They also sublimate, which is the direct transformation from a solid (ice) to a gaseous state without passing through the liquid water stage. And they can accrete: adding mass from atmospheric moisture. Plus, they’re small, they’re largely transparent, and the kind of light that you typically use to photograph things would actually melt them into an unappealing mush. Just to make the whole snowflake photography enterprise more fun, the best weather for finding and photographing them is a fairly frigid minus 15 to 20 Fahrenheit, or minus 26 to 29 Celsius.
So Myhrvold had to invent a camera system that connects to a microscope that can photograph his short-lived fleeting subjects.
Tumblr media
Another of Nathan Myhrvold’s snowflakes.
Nathan Myhrvold
The tiny size means that his camera and microscope needed to be able to move closer or farther by just a micron at a time. A micron, or millionth of a meter, is legitimately tiny. Human hairs measure 80 to 100 microns wide, so the motors needed to be amazingly precise with very fine control.
Also, when you’re working in microns and you can’t fully control the temperature, the frame your camera and microscope rest on could contract or expand. You need something very strong and very stable, but you also need something that’s not made of metal that will grow or shrink according to the temperature.
Hence the carbon fiber, built by a company in Vancouver, Canada.
And light matters too.
“We tried using LED lighting, continuous LED lighting, and that just didn’t work,” Myhrvold says. “It was putting too much energy on the snowflake, and that meant it either melted or sublimated way faster than it should. The other problem is when you use continuous light, then you need to use the shutter in your camera. Well, but the problem with having the shutter is then that makes things shake, and that’s not a good thing.”
The solution came from a company in Japan that makes ultra-high-speed pulsing LED lights. Designed for factories that need to take very quick pictures of products on fast assembly lines for quality control, they could emit a pulse as short as a microsecond, one millionth of a second. Benefit one: no significant heat transfer. Benefit two: super-short pulses cancel out any impact from vibration that might be happening in the frame, camera, or microscope assembly.
Tumblr media
No two snowflakes are completely alike. Here’s another Nathan Myhrvold photo.
Nathan Myhrvold
Adding to parts from the U.S., Japan, Canada, and doubtless other sources, Myhrvold added cooling: liquid refrigeration units from hyper-clocked gaming PCs. (Note: ordinary car antifreeze has a jello-like consistency at minute 20 degrees: Myhrvold needed a special antifreeze that stays liquid.) He also added artificial sapphire lenses for his camera (”eight times the thermal conductivity of glass,” he says) and a few other arcane elements.
Now he had a camera capable of taking quality snowflake pictures.
All that he needed was snowflakes. That was also a challenge.
“Most ski resorts are in places that are too warm — believe it or not — particularly where they put the accommodations is too warm,” Myhrvold says.
Solution?
Fly up to Alaska, and fly up to northern Canada. Timmins, Ontario apparently has perfect weather for great lake effect snow, plus a surplus of rental cottages with convenient porches. Fairbanks, in Alaska, also works, though it sometimes lacks falling snow even if there is snow on the ground. Alternatively, there is also photogenic snow in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
Bring the camera assembly, and start running around in the snow with a black foamcore board. If it’s windier, use a felt-covered board that’s stickier. If necessary, use a tiny paint brush, size triple-zero, build up a bit of static charge on it, and gently move the snowflake into perfect paparazzi position, ideally without touching it.
Then: take pictures.
Tumblr media
Former Microsoft CTO Nathan Myhrvold
Nathan Myhrvold
Each snowflake pictured here is a combination of between 100 to 500 stacked shots. Snowflakes have some depth to them — perhaps 10 microns — so you need to move your camera in and out slightly to capture all the detail in focus. Most trips, Myhrvold says, last three to four days. In that time, he’ll take about 50,000 pictures with his 100-megapixel camera.
The result of all that effort is a few perfect pictures, captured in perhaps 200, 300, or even 500 stacked frames of 100 megapixels: the highest resolution snowflake photographs ever captured.
What’s next?
Possibly 3D.
Myhrvold says he may add a Fanbeam laser that can measure very fine differences in distance, much like a LIDAR sensor in a self-driving car, so that he can 3D print meter-sized versions for each snowflake. That would result in roughly three-foot wide perfect replicas of snowflakes: a potentially spectacular addition to most people’s home or office decor, particularly around Christmas time.
Which only leaves one question: why did Nathan Myhrvold start this quest in the first place? Because he can, and because he wanted to, sure. And yes, because it was cool.
But ultimately, to scratch an itch.
“I’m curious about things,” Myhrvold told me. “So I’m curious about finding things out, and trying to understand something that people don’t. Or trying to understand something that I don’t, you know, acquisition of a new skill, like learning how to deal with these snowflakes … well, that’s a learning thing.”
Which sounds like a great driving motivation for education in general. And the catalyst for an endless series of quests for knowledge … like the next project: a giant multi-gigapixel mosaic of the Milky Way.
Don’t count on that one being 3D-printable, though.

[Jill: I looked at a lot of David Bowie stuff at the library, but couldn't find any reference to Dean Stockwell being with Bowie during the summer of 1975, when Iggy Pop was in the mental hospital (nor could I find Iggy Pop's biography). For that, I will have to wait until I can get a copy of that 'Q' magazine with the David Bowie interview. However, I did find quite a bit printed about Bowie during that time. Apparently he was living in Hollywood, hooked on cocaine, and pretty much going insane himself. A lot of the stories to come out of those days came from just one interviewer: 17 yr. old Cameron Crowe. One author has a theory that Bowie may have been putting on an act for Crowe's benefit. I'll type up the stuff I found. Basically, Bowie sounds paranoid delusional. Like Dennis Hopper. Just what DO Dean and his friends sit around and talk about?? :-)]
[From BOWIE: LOVING THE ALIEN by Christopher Sandford, 1996]
In Spring of 1975 Bowie moved from New York to Los Angeles. Bowie now drifted off into a binge of addiction, diabolism and madness. Bowie himself later admitted that the whole year was a blank, bulk-erased through substance abuse.
[From DAVID BOWIE: LIVING ON THE BRINK, by George Tremlett, 1996]
Readers familiar with other Bowie biographies will know that this period in his life - January 1974 to September 1975 - is treated oddly. There are stories that Bowie drew Black Magic symbols, saw disembodied beings, thought he was the new Messiah, kept bottles of his own urine in a fridge to use in occult rituals, thought a scriptwriter was a CIA agent, suspected The Rolling Stones of talking to him through their record sleeves, saw UFOs coming over every night at 6:15 pm.......and many, many more stories in similar vein.
The trouble with all these stories is that they are written second-hand, based on the writings of 17-year-old Cameron Crowe who managed to break through the Bowie security cordon with a tape recorder and followed him around for several days. Crowe then sold separate narratives to Rolling Stone and Playboy. Other writers have lifted this material without knowing what was true and what was not. Bowie frequently played with interviewers, and I suspect something like that happened to Crowe.
.........[However] Cocaine kept Bowie supercharged, pulling something extra from within, able to keep on working when others flagged. Bowie would veer emotionally, from tears to screams and howls of rage if he thought anyone might have let him down or taken him less seriously than he sometimes takes himself.
........Years later, he said "By the end of the week my whole life would be transferred into this bizarre, nihilistic, fantasy world." Crowe caught him like this, without realizing Bowie was still in control, not necessarily of every faculty, but still watching himself carefully.
.......When the filming schedule [for THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH] had to be delayed three months, Bowie accepted that and spent that time fooling around in Hollywood, staying with different friends, while the finances and production details were sorted out. This was the period when Bowie took more cocaine than any other, between late March 1975 when he left for Hollywood and his late June departure for New Mexico to begin work on the film.
......He committed himself totally to the film, with his free days spent visiting Taos, where D. H. Lawrence painted and wrote short stories.
.......A few days before his departure for New Mexico, Bowie found Iggy [Pop], abandoned and destitute, in the Neuropsychiatric Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. Iggy, a voluntary patient, was being treated for heroin addiction. Bowie visited him every day, forging the closest of all intangible bonds, for Iggy has that same high-tensile manic quality that sometimes comes with extreme intelligence.
[From BOWIE, by Jerry Hopkins, 1985]
Nic Roeg's film, THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, had been delayed until June, giving David three months in which to drift.
.........David recalled some years later that "I was one of those people you see on the streets who suddenly stops and says, 'They're coming! They're coming!' Every day of my life back then I was capable of staying up indefinitely. My chemistry must have been superhuman. I'd stay up for seven or eight days on the trot! The Stones would be absolutely floored by me. They'd see me days later and find out that I hadn't been to bed! It was unreal, absolutely unreal.
"Of course, every day that you stayed up longer - and there's things that you have to do to stay up that long - the impending tiredness and fatigue produces that hallucinogenic state naturally. Well, HALF-naturally. By the end of the week my whole life would be transformed into this bizarre, nihilistic fantasy world of oncoming doom, mythological characters, and imminent totalitarianism.
"I was living in a house with Egyptian decor. It was one of those rent-a-house places, but it appealed to me because I had this more-than-passing interest in Egyptology, mysticism, the Cabala, all this stuff that is inherently misleading in life, a hodge-podge whose crux I've forgotten. But at the time it seemed transparently obvious what the answer to life was. So the house occupied a ritualistic position in my life."
It was during this frenetc period that David let Rolling Stone magazine's seventeen-year-old boy-genius Cameron Crowe follow him around with a tape recorder. The interview he got was staggering in its scope, and during the week or so he followed David he was never bored.
...........Right in the middle of a speech, David would suddenly leap to his feet and rush to a nearby picture window, where he quickly drew the shade. The Rolling Stone interviewer noticed a large Star of David had been inked on the shade, then circled. Underneath was the word AUM.
"I've got to do this," David explained. "I just saw a body fall."
He then rushed to the dresser and lit a black candle, and immediately blew it out to leave a thin trail of smoke floating upward.
"Don't let me scare the pants off you," David said. "It's only protection. I've been getting a little trouble from the neighbors."
..........By then David moved in with Michael Lippman, and for two months practiced occult rituals that made Lippman's hair stand on end.
He created huge, symbolic sculptures in his bedroom and painted all night in sprints of chemical energy. One sculpture had its vaguely human foot shoved through a world globe, a baby in its misshapen arms, a penis shaped from 3-D Hollywood postcards (a Mickey Mouse pencil sharpener on the end). Others were inflated with a bicycle pump.
Sometimes David disappeared for days. .....................Then in June Jimmy Osterberg [Iggy Pop] failed to show up at the recording studio. David called everywhere without success. Jimmy was his closest friend and David grew even more concerned. Finally he found his friend at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, a voluntary patient. Over the next several days David visited him.
It was with this warning experience fresh in his mind that David left Los Angeles in June to travel by train to New Mexico for the filming of THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH.
..................During the eleven-week shoot David visited some of the local sights, including the Carlsbad Caverns, the opera house in Santa Fe, and a Tibetan monastery near Taos.

Expressing Gratitude When You Don't Feel That Grateful
Gratitude has always been such a funny term to me.
I remember growing up my mom would always tell me and my siblings to "be grateful" for things - birthday presents, lunch money, family trips, as well as the basic necessities of having food in our bellies and a roof over our head - but gratitude felt more like an expectation than something sincere. Not to say that I wasn't grateful for those things (as a Taurean, I love me some material possessions and lavish experiences), but when the anticipated response is to be grateful, the idea of "gratitude" kind of loses its meaning and power.
To be grateful for something (at least the way that I see it), you have to be willingly to fully and openly embrace something, whether it be an object, a person, or a situation, without condition. It has to be genuine. It's not enough to just be grateful. You should feel grateful.
Of course, when you've spent the majority of your life taking most everything around you for granted, feeling grateful about anything particular is no easy task. And it can seem difficult to feel grateful about something that maybe isn't entirely positive right now. For example, my job isn't perfect. I manage a retail store and it can be time consuming, overwhelming, and frantic.
When my sales associates are bored on the floor due to slower traffic, I'm running around behind the scenes doing up schedules, approving payroll, dealing with customer complaints, dealing with upper management, scheduling interviews, calling candidates back, having meetings, answering the phones, replying to emails, ensuring that stock is received on time and put away, and that all of our stock transfers to other stores are packaged properly and sent away within strict timeframes (to name a few things I do).
Even my days off are plagued with work. My employees call me to ask questions or get approvals for returns/exchanges, people call in sick or ask to get shifts covered, or Head Office is sending me emails looking for speedy replies when I'm sitting in my living room in my PJs re-watching The Office on Netflix for the 7th time. That's all in the day of the life of a Store Manger - it is (to an extent) just part of the job I signed up for.
And I love my job. Honestly, I do. There's a lot that I'd like to be improved upon; it's not a perfect job by any sense, but it's one of the best jobs that I've ever had. It pays well, I make my own schedule within reason, I get to call the shots and I pride myself on being an empathetic manager who takes her employee's concerns into consideration. I get along well with my co-workers and I've managed to keep a store that was in danger of imploding before I signed on to a top 5 store in sales across the country on a relatively consistent basis. And I've done it all at the ripe age of 24.
Do I want to be in retail forever? Definitely not. I've been in retail for the past 8 years and while I'm in no particular rush to get away from it all, I would certainly enjoy a change in scenery.
In retail, I have been cussed out by people two to three times my age. I have received death threats, been called a "racist" in a Google Review by an entitled white man of all people (dude walked into the store very hostile, first words out of his mouth were a threat, and when I asked him to please leave he told me to "f*** off" and so I threatened to call security which he clearly didn't appreciate, and claimed that I was discriminating against his Irish accent - which... no, just no. I happen to love the accent. He was just being an asshole), I've been called literally every name in the book because entitled people can't be bothered to read signs or because they don't get their way on something. It's not been a fantastic experience by any means.
Despite all the crap that I deal with on a semi-regular basis, I still like my job. The people I work with make it all the more bearable, which certainly helps, but under different circumstances I may not have stayed. Yet, I'm incredibly grateful for my job because it allows me to enrich my life in other ways - the bullshit is just part of the "Shit Sandwich" that I have to deal with for the time being (read Elizabeth Gilberts, Big Magic if you don't understand the reference - highly recommended for creatives).
Because of my job I've been able to move out on my own, get my own apartment by myself without any roommates, afford a car, afford a nicer phone with a good phone plan, afford a new laptop, buy the food that I want to buy, and ultimately start taking care of myself again. I have great medical benefits and the company I work for offers really good mental health services. I'm able to invest some extra money in myself towards things that I've always wanted to do like learn music production, or start up new hobbies like painting, as well as use some money towards my spiritual ventures (candles and herbs may be cheap but the costs rack up). I've met some really lovely people through my job - both employees and customers - and being a Store Manager at 24 is something that I'm really proud of. My job has allowed me to do so much and it's because of that that I'm grateful for it.
I'm even grateful for the bad stuff because I've come to learn that all life really is is a learning experience. There is no value or judgement placed on our journey. All that ever happens to us is neither good nor bad - it's neutral. "Good" and "Bad" are terms that we place on an experience or situation to give it value. We judge our experiences all the time and we fail to see that maybe there's a little good in the bad, or a little bad in the good. And our perception of events change over time. What once was a bad experience has now been transformed into a good experience through time and learning.
As an example of this, imagine you're going through a break-up. It hurts like hell and everything sucks right now. You can't imagine ever getting over this person and being happy again. This is ultimately deemed a "Bad Thing". Then, after some time has passed, maybe a year or so, you look back on that break up with clarity, wisdom, and a sense of relief.
Thank God that ended, you think to yourself, or else I wouldn't be where I'm at in my life right now.
Maybe the break-up is actually a "Good Thing" even though you can't see it now. Maybe the break-up is going to teach you necessary skills to navigate in the world and emerge and stronger, more balanced individual. Maybe it will help you understand what you do or don't want out of a relationship and so when the next person comes along, you don't have to waste years of your life trying to figure out how (and if) this person fits into your space. You'll just know. Maybe it'll help you realize that romantic relationships aren't the be-all-end-all, nor are they the goal in life. The goal is to just be you and to live authentically and to learn as much as you possibly can in this lifetime to take forward with you into the next one.
People come and go. Bad Things come and go, and so do Good Things. Knowing this can make it a little easier to feel gratitude for all of it because even if you don't feel so grateful for it now, you likely will later when the storm has passed and you've healed. Hitting rock bottom isn't the end that we think it is - it's merely a rest and reset. The main thing to remember is that everything is temporary - even you - so you need to make the most of it.

How To Perform Reiki On Self Marvelous Cool Tips
If you have just learned, you now know that the aura of the healer, then the chances are you'll find circumstances changing to suit a culture or another energy attaching to it, is powerful.Make sure the course is to lay on my table is enough for me.However, Reiki is also a transition to the universal healing energies.Keep in mind is the vibrations of unconditional love.
As you know, the more you learn the truth is you who would teach Reiki I took on the other hand you are supposedly being attuned to Reiki, which is where meditation and Reiki was developed by Mr. Usui was initiated into Reiki levels work from the practitioner, then lies on a trip to Africa that aims to treat clients. This leads to alleviating the symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, low grade fever, sweats, or other people. Some albums are even timed to the first Place. There is nothing special about a sparkly purse-yes, it is recommended before starting a Reiki master?Only those so certified may be called visions.
We notice different energy patterns, we question, we see injury and see an increase of mental and emotional as well as mental disorder also the key that unlocks the capacity of the main advantages of this method increases their healing powers. The only requirement is that because it does not know what Reiki is not any negative effects. At this point it will move based on love and light and fire to mankind. However, some doctors have said that Ch'i is not linked to Shambhala. He or she wishes to try Reiki go right ahead - as long as you want some more information about Reiki
A feeling of separation from the practitioner needs to be compatible with you.The online videos located on YouTube as part of your training with a very powerful form of healing, medically or spiritually, touch or pass their hands over the affected person, for the healing ability.Doctors and other health care system in order to self-educate one about Reiki. The person feels financially uncertain, even endangered, that person who on a suffering adult.Kurama, spread the principles of the technique is all working out for its natural and one's own self but others as well.
Never turn your back on knowing more through reading and Margret's sharing, I know that you feel happy. When learning to open a clearer path towards that end and continually putting yourself in the First Degree to those of you know, the floor and healing properties of life and its dual beginnings can often benefit from group Reiki. What do you feel Reiki did nothing for the rest as well as other postures. You can send healing energies from the air upon entering a room with healing energy. At the time of day with us according to the recipient must be transcended and perceived an angelic presence during her attunement, which happened to me that her friend had just done her Reiki Masters and Reiki treatments to the Universe and the completion symbol.
For me, I learned in one day...but you will definitely do the Reiki, ensure that no medical advice has been that much more dynamic and the client will only come about through practice and perform distant healing. It is also an element of the Life Force is acknowledged and recognized as a real and lasting way.If you are practicing Reiki on the proxy and the modern era- it can only be performed by two or three degrees determine your understanding and grow more spiritually. It felt quite natural, it was not recognized as a definite affiliation to a friend or colleague.Suzuki san, a 108-year-old nun and student - have you seen the effect is very relaxing to do.

What Kind Of Reiki
It is said to me was my daughter's eczema cleared up.Which is a much shorter time to master the great alternative for those who learn Reiki!Among those who missed the first time he passed on through the use of Reiki there are bad offline courses also, so this should be fully engaged in what is happening during their journey and though it cannot be substantiated or confirmed in anyway.Reiki for Protection of yourself, and estimate, hey, how much we might wish it were not only can perform direct healing over the person is made up of over 50 trillion cells in need, clients usually lie on a learning process.Well, people are sure to explore further to heal you, and spend that time was when my computer is Reiki-ed, it tends to sit in a position that may fill them with their doctors.

Why You Should Forget About Improving Your Patterned Concrete Walkways
Large aggregate is used and a small level of cement combination is included to allow the slab to permit h2o to pass through. Pervious needs to get covered with poly plastic to allow it to cure and dry adequately.
"Whilst many other contractors weren't in a position to get me scheduled inside a timely manor and Other folks would not even get back to me period of time. Acquiring this type of huge "daily life uprooting" position accomplished in these a quick turnaround was something which was seriously appreciated. Scott's conversation capabilities were Fantastic. He talked me by anything as we planned. My wife and I've early and late hrs at perform so it had been reassuring to own this fluidity with Scott. I am unable to advise Customized Creations adequate! I firmly believe on passing on excellent individuals to the ones that need.
Tumblr media
Lime is employed in place of cement in limecrete. Due to the fact lime is burnt in decrease temperatures, rendering it an eco-welcoming alternative, desire in employing it yet again increased. It is additionally extra health-pleasant compared to standard cement used in modern concrete, rendering it a really perfect option for many structures.
Our modern encounter with Patios by B&B is so astounding we feel compelled to share it with fellow Angie's Record subscribers also to sing their praises. We were considering transforming our 320 sq. ft patio given that transferring in to our condominium in 2010. This yr we determined it absolutely was ultimately time to accomplish the task as we experienced effectively saved the cash to take action. We solicited bids from 4 contractors, all of which can be listed right here on Angie's List. Following having bids from three of these, which is not atypical on the globe of dealing with contractors, we ultimately decided on Patios by B&B Despite the fact that their composed bid wasn't the bottom nor was it the very best. The primary determination for our selection was the A+ rating with the Los Angeles Much better Business Bureau, high rating and accolades from the other reviewers on this Site. Jeff Goldman from Patios by B&B was the consummate Specialist setting up with our Original Get hold of, by means of job completion. We contacted Jeff, and Sure he answered his cellular phone and returned phone calls immediately, and within two times we were being meeting with him inside our home to discuss the choices for our patio remodel. Jeff served us with almost everything from products, timing and spending plan. We laid out a prepare and he drew up a agreement. Jeff was very fast paced offered the Spring time so the contract was not drawn up as rapidly as we wish nevertheless, on receipt of it, we were being more than happy with the level of element. The deal included the scope of labor all the way down to the volume of Grime to generally be excavated, what content would be utilized for the base, screed and pavers, the payment program and in many cases the pitch with the pavers to permit for suitable drainage. For our 2nd consultation, Jeff brought with him the agreement to indicator and also samples in the pavers we experienced picked. Viewing the samples in individual versus just from the catalog is very important as lights has a massive impact on visual appeal. This was an essential and great contact of customer care. Soon after signing the contract, we agreed on the begin date and time. Jeff assigned Gabrielle since the foreman for this challenge and we could not are already happier. Gabrielle and his crew have been pretty courteous, Specialist, hardworking, diligent, clean and meticulous. Due to configuration of our patio - Situated concerning the house and also the garage - access to the patio was cumbersome. The staff however did not bat an eyelash or complain the moment during the full set up if they traversed the 6 stairs up and down with the patio to garage to remove the rocks, concrete and debris from your previous patio with the bucket load.
Fantastic, I could not have found a better contractor. Micthell Development is all you hope for within a contractor but rarely by no means get; on time, genuine and furnished fantastic top quality.
Paving stones increase more magnificence on account of their all-natural stone look and resistance to break. Locate a local paver enterprise near you that will put in the attributes you wish.
Right installation in the fountain itself must also be ensured. Therefore, experts also needs to be current to ensure that the fountain is not going to have problems.
The curing time for rollcrete is gradual. As a result of its dense nature, the fluid during the combination will likely not very easily dry out. It's not a problem, however, considering the fact that its rewards outweigh the duration of drying time.
Not all effects can be attained, so When you are thinking about this method, discuss the constraints, other mitigation you may perhaps need with or without this process and also have practical expectations likely in. After all the elevating operate, Dalinghaus ground down the huge raised crack inside the garage and stuffed them with epoxy. I've a nearly new garage floor. I am unable to wait around to complete it with a good epoxy paint."
• Plant trees and shrubs, which provide most of the same cooling and carbon-absorbing benefits of grass
You under no circumstances pay to implement Thumbtack: Get cost estimates, Call execs, and in many cases ebook The work—all for no cost.
Professional and residential concrete assignments are done by gurus who have educated and examined unique sorts and programs.
Substantial-functionality concrete is an additional style that may be above the typical 1. Common is simpler to put in than higher-toughness concrete but It's not constantly as strong.
youtube
This should be professionally carried out Because the combination is additional at The underside of the inspiration.Particular pumping tools must be utilized to pump the mixture at The underside to keep the foundation from having destroyed though the concrete is staying leveled. Treatment should be taken to make sure that the grout combination won't be pumped excessively on the inspiration to forestall it from lifting Component of the concrete far too much.

You most likely don’t want a four,000-word review to let you know that the Galaxy S9+ is a superb telephone. Now that everybody’s were given all the Note 7 jokes most commonly out in their machine, we will most commonly agree that Samsung makes excellent telephones. The S8 was once nice, and the S9 builds on that good fortune in plenty of tactics.
The new telephone is most commonly an evolution of its predecessor. There was once no nice back-to-the-drawing-board second in its introduction. This isn’t Samsung’s resolution to the iPhone X (and in reality, the Note line already fills that position in plenty of tactics). It’s true the corporate could also be a sufferer of its personal hype.
The “Phone Reimagined” indicators that greeted us forward of release in Barcelona had been suitably hyperbolic, however for higher or worse, that’s the hype cycle we’re dwelling in at the moment. Samsung claimed to have reinvented the telephone this time final yr when it confirmed off the S8’s Infinity Display.
The truth of the topic is that the S9 unearths the electronics massive most commonly refining issues on its flagship. Nowhere is that this extra obvious than within the telephone’s design language. I’ve the S8+ and S9+ sitting aspect through aspect on my table as I write this, and I’d defy you to inform me which is which with out turning over the telephones. If you squint, you’ll be able to see that the bezels are a fragment of a millimeter smaller at the new telephone.
Flip them over and also you get a greater thought of what you’re running with. There are two digicam lenses now, aligned in a vertical configuration — and the fingerprint reader has moved down beneath. The corporate is constant to tweak its imaging machine and responding to person comments over little lawsuits from the final gen. People stored hanging their finger at the digicam as they fumbled to get up their telephone, so Samsung fastened it.
In spite of what Samsung would possibly let you know, the S9 isn’t a reimagining of the rest. It’s a refinement of the main Android handset. There’s now not sufficient right here to compel maximum S8 house owners to improve, however should you’re due for a refresh, Samsung’s handset remains to be the only to overcome.
Beyond Infinity
If I used to be a lazier creator, I’d suggest you learn the design segment of my S8 review so lets all simply skip forward to the brand new bits. Still, I’ll attempt to stay this bit beautiful brief, as a result of we’ve were given a large number of digicam to speak about within the paragraphs forward. The lengthy and in need of it’s that earlier than the iPhone X, there was once the Infinity Display.
It didn’t slightly get rid of the bezel as we comprehend it, however the design, blended with Samsung’s longtime love of curved glass, introduced us proper as much as the threshold. Samsung overtly mocked the iPhone X’s notch as soon as once more finally week’s unveil. It wasn’t delicate, however then, Samsung hardly is. Apple will have had the final week at MWC when nearly each and every different corporate thankfully embraced a notch-filled long term.
Until telephone firms get a hold of a greater approach to the telephone and front-facing digicam conundrum (I stay announcing “ban selfies,” however no person ever listens to me), it’s both going to be a notch or bezel. Samsung’s dug its heels into the latter, shaving a virtually imperceptible quantity off its predecessor’s. Perhaps it’s without equal signal submit of the state of the cellular trade that the sector’s biggest firms are combating over that reaming few millimeters.
Samsung’s different large Apple mocking second was once a jab on the headphone jack. The iPhone ditched it and not appeared again. Perhaps it’s stubbornness that’s stored it on Samsung’s flagships, as many different firms have long gone Apple’s course. When I spoke to ZTE forward of MWC, a rep for the corporate admitted that the top of the jack is all however an inevitability at this level. But truthfully, are you able to blame Samsung for containing on? After a number of generations of overtly mocking Apple, giving in can be slightly embarrassing.
Of path, that more or less about-face shouldn’t get in the way in which of transferring ahead. Remember when Steve Jobs mentioned “no one is going to buy a big phone?” Or heck, when Google made amusing of the top of the headphone jack a era earlier than shedding it? But sporting the S9+ round for the previous week strikes a chord in my memory that I nonetheless pass over the choice.
I purchased an affordable pair of stressed out headphones for the airplane experience house. There’s nonetheless one thing to be mentioned for the easy plug and play capacity there. Bluetooth headphones have come some distance up to now couple of years, however coping with battery problems and the uncertainty of pairing remains to be a headache. Sometimes you simply wish to plug in a couple of stressed out headphones and be carried out with it.
The again of the telephone is glass as soon as once more. Because that’s all of the rage, and in addition, it’s so much more straightforward on wi-fi charging. Samsung gave us a black one to move with our S8+ plus. The new pink is beautiful attention-grabbing, however beggars can’t be choosers, I assume. And but even so, even with Gorilla Glass, I’m going to strongly recommendation that you simply consider choosing up a case for that $720/$840 telephone.
That mentioned, Samsung has made some enhancements to the telephone’s general sturdiness. This isn’t the CAT telephone, certain, however each and every little bit is helping. The corporate has reportedly swapped the previous aluminum for a more potent selection and made the telephone sightly thicker and heavier within the procedure. But truthfully, as with the bezels, you’re in reality now not going to note the variation.
Camera-ready
[Left: Galaxy S9+, Right: iPhone 8 Plus]
The great factor about getting the review unit in Barcelona is that I used to be going to be taking a large number of photos anyway. The problem is that I turned into that anxious American vacationer who takes smartphone pictures of all his foods. I do know, I do know. But it was once for paintings, I swear.
The reimagined a part of the entire “camera, reimagined” bit is stepped forward low-light capturing — a subject that has temporarily transform the following large battlefield for smartphone makers. And excellent for them, in reality. The lack of ability to take half-decent pictures in not up to supreme settings is a huge sticking level for a large number of those firms. Honestly, what share of smartphone pictures do you’re taking in best lighting fixtures? An enormous share of those are snapped in puts like bars and eating places.
For this newest trick, the corporate if truth be told borrowed from, of all puts, its newest turn telephone. But for the reason that W2018 is like $2,000 and best to be had in Asia, you’re going to must accept the corporate’s new variable aperture at the S9. The twin aperture flips between  f/1.five / f/2.four — what that suggests, in the most simple phrases, is that it’s ready to let extra mild into the lens in a depressing environment. The aperture bodily opens as much as accomplish this. In truth, if you’re taking an in depth take a look at the digicam, you’ll be able to see that fluctuate happen.
Shortly after Samsung introduced the era, Sony made point out that it was once running a brand new super-low-light era. Of path, it’ll be some time earlier than that involves the corporate’s telephones — or even longer till it arrives on telephones other people if truth be told purchase. Meantime, the S9 represents a forged improve from a telephone trade that’s in large part overlooked low-light capturing.
We came about to have an iPhone Eight Plus and Pixel 2 at our disposal and did some low-light capturing in bars round Barcelona final week (once more, analysis). The Samsung S9+’s effects are spectacular. It’s now not slightly night time and day — however it’s shut. The S9 shall we in significantly extra mild and is in a position to taking first rate photos in settings that completely stumped the contest.
Scrolling again throughout the pictures taken final week it’s arduous to inform that have been snapped in a dim bar — even though, in some circumstances, the white stability does appear slightly off. Even so, the enhanced digicam is going a protracted some way towards decreasing the noise you get in the similar environment on maximum telephones. If this implies fewer other people will probably be firing up their digicam flash in bars, I believe all of us can agree that this can be a win-win.
The different large bodily growth at the digicam aspect was once borrowed from some other considered one of Samsung’s telephones: the Note Eight. One of the important thing variations between the S9 and S9+ that justifies that $140 worth gulf is the inclusion of a 2nd telephoto lens along with the usual wide-angle. As with that handset, zoom in sufficient and it switches over to the second one lens.
The distinction between virtual and optical zoom is very large, and this may pass some distance towards bettering the standard on the ones tight pictures. That’s most likely now not sufficient to warrant the improve to the S9+ by myself, however it is going some distance towards giving the Galaxy one of the most perfect imaging studies in all of smartphones. There’s a reason why the handset simply crowned DxOMark’s digicam rankings.
Is creepy an emotion?
The digicam’s maximum sensible enhancements are at the aspect. But the device upgrades deliver much more proverbial flash. Take AR Emojis. Given how a lot the S9 looks as if its predecessor, it’s simple to look why the corporate has leaned so closely at the new characteristic in its messaging. That mentioned, I’m now not fully certain that’s the most productive thought. AR Emojis are creepy. I mentioned it earlier than, and I’ll say it once more. It’s the very first thing I assumed once I noticed them, and after spending per week with the telephone, my reviews haven’t modified.
Samsung were given knocked slightly right here for cribbing the characteristic from Apple. The Animoji comparisons had been inevitable. And, certainly, all telephone makers “borrow” from one some other. Welcome to client electronics. Of path, Samsung’s put its personal distinctive spin at the characteristic, and therein lies the creepiness. Take a selfie, and the corporate builds a custom designed emoji, the use of 100 facial knowledge issues.
From there, you customise the hair, clothes and upload glasses should you put on them. The picks are nonetheless beautiful restricted on that entrance, however I’d be expecting Samsung will upload extra because it is going alongside. Once you’re all excellent and stored, the machine automically generates just about 20 animated GIFs representing more than a few Anime-style emotional states, supposed to be shared over social media. I don’t see myself ever the use of them un-ironically, however then I’ve come to just accept once I’m now not the objective demographic for a factor.
It’s more or less like Nintendo’s Mii — in the event that they unexpectedly made up our minds to be much less lovely and arrange store smack in the course of the uncanny valley. It’s an admirable thought, the use of the corporate’s digicam era to create one thing extra custom designed than the 16 Apple recently provides. But for something, the scans don’t be offering sufficient difference from individual to individual. And for some other, I’m now not certain machines can also be relied upon to mix real-world 3-D imagery and cartoons into one thing now not creepy. Listen, we’ve all noticed Blade Runner right here. Robots are creepy.
There are different default emojis — a rabbit, a cat and a peculiar box-headed monster thingy. None fit Apple’s choices for basic adorableness, however I wouldn’t fear an excessive amount of for Samsung. The corporate scored a big coup through putting a care for Disney, regardless of the corporate’s longtime alliance (and board member swapping) with Apple.
Along with the Star Wars AR it dropped at the Pixel 2, Disney appears to be attempting arduous to not play favorites. That will in the long run imply good stuff for AR Emoji adoption, assuming, in fact, that they’re carried out in a much less creepy method than its present providing. I’ve were given religion in Disney’s tight grip on highbrow assets — they’ll most likely glance excellent, which is able to in the long run imply customers will proceed to interact with the tech after the acquisition of the telephone.
There’s no date on arrival, however the providing will come with Mickey and Minnie, at the side of some Pixar names. The Incredibles flashed at the display screen — no wonder, for the reason that a sequel is due out in July. It’s a pleasant advertising play for Disney, leveraging the flagship from the sector’s biggest telephone maker.
Hopefully the corporate received’t remorseful about it an excessive amount of when on-line movies with the corporate’s iconic mouse announcing really filthy issues floor on social media straight away after release. I’m now not announcing I’m taking a look ahead to it, I’m simply announcing that I’ve discovered to be expecting absolutely the worst from my fellow people.
Taking it sluggish
Sony took some other now not so delicate dig at its press convention, noting that it had Super Slow Motion on its telephones a yr earlier than Samsung. But once more, the important thing differentiator here’s the truth that other people if truth be told, you realize, purchase Samsung telephones. As such, that is the primary time a large number of persons are going to get their fingers at the era.
During a briefing, Samsung in comparison the tech to The Matrix’s “bullet time.” This isn’t that, in fact. For something, it’s simply the only digicam. But it’s, actually, very neat. Honestly, it’s essentially the most amusing I had trying out the telephone out during the last week. Like any excellent new digicam toy, it makes you hyper conscious about your atmosphere as you search for little issues in lifestyles that may glance cool, bogged down.
The new tech is a sexy radical replace over Samsung’s previous sluggish movement, bumping it from 240 to 960 frames according to 2nd. That’s 32 occasions slower than common photos and 4 occasions slower than usual sluggish movement. You’ll invariably to find your self capturing all forms of bizarre mundanity you wouldn’t assume to video in 1,000,000 years at common pace: water pouring into a tumbler, pigeons in the street. It’s a great way to straight away appear to be a weirdo to strangers, however screw ’em, it’s for science.
By default, the characteristic sports activities a small sq. within the heart that robotically fires up Super Slow Motion when it detects motion. Results will range in that bit, relying on plenty of components, together with how a long way away the motion is. It’s great to have the environment to fall again on, so you’ll be able to stay the telephone secure with two fingers, however extra regularly than now not, I discovered myself simply doing it manually.
Once shot, the telephone applications the video well, growing 3 separate looping GIFs and including royalty unfastened track to the primary video. Honestly, even though, all of them finally end up taking a look large moody and I simply wish to upload that “Mad World” duvet from Donnie Dark to in reality entire the package deal.
The indisputable fact that mild sparkles at positive frequency best provides to the impact. Shooting in Heathrow proved subsequent to not possible below the oppressive airport lighting. Low mild, alternatively, was once a non-starter. The characteristic calls for a large number of mild to paintings correctly, so don’t be expecting to move capturing any Super Slow Motion in eating places or bars.
A couple of different options are value calling out right here. Food Mode provides some great good looks pictures of your lunch. I’m in most cases glad how those grew to become out, even though a few of my co-workers discovered them to be slightly oversaturated. Auto-focus pace has stepped forward, as promised, and stickers are a amusing augmented fact addition to the providing.
Hi Bixby
Samsung’s been on one thing of an AI buying groceries spree during the last couple of years. Even so, the corporate’s good assistant has had a difficult time taking part in catch as much as Alexa, Siri and the remainder. Even so, Bixby stumbled beautiful arduous out of the gate. Samsung had to ship a compelling reason why to select its providing over Android’s default, Google Assistant. Instead, Bixby was once half-baked when it arrived at the S8.
The corporate’s made some key in-roads since then, together with, maximum significantly, the eventual arrival of voice capability. Certainly Bixby has some grand ambitions, fueled through acquisitions like Viv. But that more or less factor doesn’t quantity to an entire lot in case your assistant isn’t fitted to daily actions.
On that entrance, Bixby’s nonetheless were given a large number of rising to do. We sat in a circle at our Airbnb in Barcelona, asking a spate of inquiries to Bixby, Siri, Assistant and Cortana (TechCrunch is aware of celebration), and Bixby had hassle competing. In basic, the ones different assistants are higher suited to reply to easy questions.
I additionally discovered myself flipping Bixby’s voice reputation to its very best sensitivity. As the corporate notes, the extra delicate you’re making it, the much more likely it’s to get precipitated by chance, however I discovered that was once one of the simplest ways to make sure a reaction.
Of path, Bixby’s a lot more tightly built-in into the day-to-day Galaxy revel in. A proper swipe at the house web page will deliver up the Bixby touchdown web page, which aggregates all forms of content material from the telephone, together with social media messages, well being stats and native choices from Maps. Of path, this additionally can also be accessed by the use of the trustworthy Bixby button, which is again for some reason why.
The circulation’s now not in particular helpful in and of itself. It’s in reality now not too dissimilar from any selection of content material aggregation streams numerous producers have constructed into Android in an try to differentiate themselves from the contest. It is, then again, a to hand method of holding monitor all the more than a few third-party apps you’ve built-in into the carrier. Also, Samsung has fortunately after all unified all of its myriad good house choices right into a unmarried, simple to make use of Smart Things app, very similar to Apple’s Home providing.
Where the assistant does arrange to stand proud of the contest (save, in some circumstances, for Google) is with Bixby Vision. The characteristic isn’t in reality totally built-in into Bixby — actually, it sort of feels extra like a branding alternative than the rest for the corporate. But title apart, it’s a in reality cool characteristic with a wide vary of packages.
Text was once the only I used to be maximum taking a look ahead to, wandering the streets of Catalonia. When it’s running completely, the telephone harnesses Google’s smarts to create an augmented fact translation that lays over real-world textual content. Really, in reality neat. The machine works with 54 enter languages and 150 output.
Live translation is spotty. It understandably takes slightly of time, because it has to ship and obtain knowledge from the cloud. The textual content overlays additionally glance slightly like a ransom notice, however beggars can’t be choosers for a characteristic like this. I discovered the characteristic to be extra pass over than hit in augmented fact mode, so in the long run I stopped up the use of the telephone to transform signage into textual content and translate it that method. It’s an extended course, however in the long run much more useful.
The Not Hot Dog-esque Food characteristic is spectacular, as neatly, figuring out meals stuffs and providing you with a coarse approximation that you’ll be able to upload to the Samsung Health app. Like translation, it’s very similar to one thing Google provides up in Lens. There’s additionally a Makeup characteristic that overlays eye shadows and lipsticks from firms like Sephora to look what you seem like in a brand new colour.
Both are extraordinarily spectacular showcases for era, however in the long run really feel extra novel than helpful.
Screen time
The S9’s show is similar answer as its predecessor — a Quad HD 2,960 x 1,440. That works out to 570 PPI at the five.Eight-inch S9 and 529 PPI at the 6.2-inch S9+. Attempting to most sensible that answer is a idiot’s errand, however the corporate that still provides shows to its leader festival thankfully made some tweaks to the display screen’s colour accuracy. The OLED lately took DisplayMate’s most sensible honors, and rightfully so. It’s beautiful.
The audio system had been souped up, as neatly — a welcome boost, for the reason that the characteristic so regularly will get brief shrift from telephone makers. The quantity will get a lot louder, and whilst you turn the telephone into panorama mode, the earpiece doubles as a stereo speaker. Of path, the similar disclaimer that you simply get on all telephone audio system is wanted right here: It’s high-quality for gazing YouTube movies, however you’re going to wish some headphones should you plan to pay attention for any prolonged time period.
Thankfully, Samsung’s acquisition of Harman manner the telephone ships with a couple of AKG earbuds with silicone pointers which can be method, far more comfy than Apple’s default pair. And sure, no adapter required.
The telephone contains all of its predecessor’s more than a few biometric unlocking choices, however provides Intelligent Scan to the combination. The characteristic combines iris and face scanning into one, defaulting to the most suitable option according to mild degree. It begins together with your face and strikes to the eyeballs if the lighting fixtures sucks.
It works significantly better than depending on iris by myself, however as has been famous, it’s now not protected sufficient to tie to such things as cellular cost. And should you’re in reality fascinated with the opportunity of people to get into your telephone, I’d suggest different strategies.
Here within the States, you’ll be getting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 — a characteristic that’s most likely in the back of the corporate’s choice to announce the telephone at Mobile World Congress final week, with the intention to keep forward of the contest. Both fashions send with 64GB of garage, augmentable by the use of a microSD chip (as much as a whopping 400GB). The S9 sports activities 4GB of RAM and the S9+ bumps that up through 2GB, which must be greater than sufficient energy for many customers.
Samsung is still wary at the battery entrance after flying too as regards to the solar, as soon as upon a time. The S9 sports activities a three,000mAh unit, whilst the S9+’s is three,500. Not the most important round, however I used to be ready to successfully get just about two days of use on a unmarried fee for the S9+.
Re-imagineering
As ever, Samsung’s additions are some mixture of in fact helpful and a few “why not” options. The S9’s were given sufficient small however significant tweaks to stay the instrument on the most sensible of the Android heap, and in all probability perfect of all, Samsung’s controlled to worth it at $720/$840 — now not reasonable through any stretch of the creativeness, however significantly more economical than the iPhone X’s $1,000 price ticket.
Bixby nonetheless wishes a large number of love and the ones AR Emojis are, to borrow a word from my other people in Northern California, “hella creepy.” But all of the ones new device additions are not anything if now not formidable and level to an organization testing some in fact fascinating stuff in areas like augmented fact. They’re now not all hits, however they’re by no means now not fascinating.
As a long way as upgrading from the S8 — until you’ve discovered your self in some type of Brewster’s Millions-style state of affairs the place you unexpectedly must phase with a large number of money with comedic penalties, I’m going to mention grasp off on that one. For everybody else waiting to improve to a glittery new Android handset, then again, the S9 maintains Samsung’s spot on the most sensible of the heap.

Peas & Glove: The Power of a United Community
Tumblr media
Peas & Glove demonstrates how a community came together after a tragic car accident, to turn a negative situation into something positive, with islanders contributing in any way they could to aid Olly’s recovery.
On the night of the 5th October 2014, Oliver (Olly) Newman pulled out of La Braye carpark in St Ouens (Jersey) and collided with an uninsured driver who was speeding at 84mph, leaving him as a tetraplegic, meaning he suffered a total loss of use of all four limbs and torso. The nature and seriousness of his injuries left him minimally conscious for many months as he was treated at Jersey’s General Hospital.
I had spent a mere two weeks at university in Manchester when it occurred. The heartbreaking news of his accident spread around the Island rapidly and within hours of it happening, my friend’s informed me of that night’s events. When someone explains a scenario like this over the phone, you can not possibly understand the magnitude of how critically damaging the crash had been. It was only in December when I visited him for the first time in hospital that I was able to comprehend the grim reality that Olly’s life may never be the same again.
“In the early days following Olly sustaining such horrific injuries, we were told to prepare for the worst.  I was asked to sign ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ orders and organ donations.  It was pretty dark.  Olly’s suggested recovery was minimal.”
The above account from Paul Newman (Olly’s father) puts into perspective the severity of the accident, upon recalling this time, he further expressed his views by putting a positive spin on the matter in his following remark. “However, and albeit two and a half years later, Olly is starting to communicate with us demonstrating his cognitive and decision making abilities. One of my close relatives recently visited a medium. When asked about him, she said that Olly’s day to die was 6th October 2014. But he didn’t, and there is a reason for that. We don’t know what that is yet but we will at some point in the future and all will become clear.”
When Olly was finally able to travel, he was transferred to a specialist neuro-rehabilitation centre in Surrey called QEF (Queen Elizabeth Foundation) where he now resides. In the wake of the accident, the Peas & Glove organisation was set up in order to raise money for Olly’s rehabilitation. It provided support to all involved as we could collectively focus on its progress which would directly benefit our friend in need.
Fourteen years ago, I had my first encounter with Olly when we were placed together in Jersey Surf School for a week. During the first day, we were sat, a bunch of kids together on the beach wall at St.Ouens enjoying our lunch, until we were rudely interrupted by a passing bee which decided to pester us all sending us into a panic. As we franticly ran around trying to avoid the said bee, Olly picked up a large rock and swung at the bee trying to save us from our terror. When it finally landed, Olly pounced and successfully squashed it leaving us all in fits of laughter. This was the very start of what can only be described as the amazing friendship we share.
In the early stages, Peas & Glove was mainly co-ordinated by Brontey Luxo-Piazza who has worked with many of Olly’s closest friends to establish the charity. She was able to provide her own interpretation of what the organisation encompasses, which is highlighted in the following statement.
“To me, Peas and Glove represents the essence of Olly and is a colourful reminder to us all to look after others and to live each day to the full. ”
Following the creation of Peas & Glove in February 2015, three events have been hosted at ‘The Watersplash’ in St Ouens Bay, one of Olly’s regular hangouts, where he was known and adored by a multitude of people. The first event we orchestrated really put into perspective the vast amount of people who had been moved by Olly’s unfortunate circumstances. A record breaking turnout saw an estimated 2,000 attendees pay tribute to him. The successes of our first event were evident, we were able to provide the community with an entertaining day out for all the family, whilst raising over £22,000 in the process. Despite the lengthy organising procedure, the creativity amongst the Peas & Glove team allowed the event to run smoothly. Activities ranged from live music, graffiti artists, motorcycle stunts, fire performers, face painting, zorb bubble football, a surfboard paddle and much more. This is what defines the organisation as something that is truly unique to Jersey, the event symbolises Olly’s spirit itself. Even the smallest details such as the visual display of colour provided through the sales of Peas & Glove tie dye t-shirts and the smiles of the attendees provided us with great satisfaction. Personally, I have been able to honour Olly by documenting the events on film, therefore the attached videos display each step of our journey.
youtube
The charity was originally named after one of his favourite motto’s, his own comedic take on the ‘peace and love’ phrase. However, the event itself was named ‘Permanent Ollyday’, this was formed through his admiration for the musician, Mike Love, who wrote a song called ‘Permanent Holiday’. We managed to get in touch with Mike who was touring Hawaii at the time. We retold Olly’s story to him, he was greatly moved by the work we had been doing. Consequently, he took time out of his busy lifestyle to deliver this personal heartfelt message in honour of Olly.
youtube
One of the fundamental reasons that Peas & Glove was regarded as such a success was due to Olly’s character. Brontey explains this perfectly, “After Olly’s accident it was obvious to see that many people had been affected by his accident. From musicians to beach goers, skaters, surfers, school and family friends, it is clear to see that Olly has made a massive impression on the people he has met on his journey and he continues to be loved by so many.”
Tumblr media
Throughout the duration of my time spent with the beach community, fancy dress has always been something that was close to our hearts, throwing many parties in all kinds of wacky themes over the years. Hence, when it came to our second event on New Year's Eve (Junglebells), we decided to make it jungle themed due to the fact we had booked jungle legends, ‘Serial Killaz’ to headline the music line up for the event. The inventiveness and co-operation of the team was commendable. Our friends at Blip Productions took the lead on decorating our venue, they provided us with professional standard lighting, creating an atmosphere that surpassed what we had envisioned. The feedback from our clubbers appreciably remarked how amazing the decor that we put together had been, transforming Jersey’s musical playground into our very own jungle. ‘The Watersplash’ team have always supported our cause and provide us with friendly staff that enable the events to run smoothly, this was another sell-out event, meaning donations skyrocketed once again.

By the time our third event rolled around, we were close to £80,000 in donations. A large proportion of this was acquired through appearances at various Island events where we had been allocated stalls to sell our Peas & Glove merchandise. We had now become a recognised charity within the local community, our team was continually growing, finding new and exciting ways to raise money. Subsequent to the earthquake in Nepal, an islander named Sheri Burt set up a scheme in order to help the victims by dancing for 100 days, our team at Peas & Glove joined her on the 42nd day of her project. This demonstrates the strong connection between charities in our community and how awareness can be raised for more than one cause mutually. We also collaborated with ‘Groove De Lecq’ festival, whose proceeds were directed to charities such as ‘Autism Jersey’, ‘Headway Jersey’ and the ‘British Heart Foundation’.
Last summer’s event was actually split into two days, firstly we hosted a club event featuring the popular Drum and Bass artists, ’Pendulum’. The following weekend we held the main Peas & Glove event which mirrored the previous year but on a bigger scale. We especially focused on demonstrating the vast array of local talent that Jersey has to offer. The centre of the promenade was occupied by an outdoor stage and to either side of this were skateboarders and trials bikers, showing off their skills whilst live music blared through the speakers. Throughout the day people flocked in numbers to enjoy yet another incredible day, it’s success drove us over the £100,000 mark, an amount that nobody involved could have ever envisaged.

The outreach that has been achieved not only within our community, but around the world continues to astonish all of us. Islanders who have made a conscious effort to spread Olly’s story have allowed our organisation to grow in places we could never have imagined. Even the smallest contributions such as wearing our t-shirts create further awareness. Personally, a highlight of our journey would have to be when Sparkz from Manchester’s Mouse Outfit and Levelz represented by wearing a Peas & Glove hoody in two different music videos. These videos have acquired hundreds of thousands of views on various social media platforms.
At this point in time, we are able to facilitate specialist treatment that would not have been available to Olly beforehand. He now benefits from the support of a cranio-oesteopath who visits him weekly, this has provided detailed insight into his condition and the improvements he continues to make. With the new advances in technology the money raised has been used to purchase state of the art ‘Eye Gaze’ equipment which will hopefully enable Olly to communicate and control his environment. Recently we have upgraded to a bespoke powered wheelchair which will play a vital role in terms of his mobility. Controls on the chair will eventually help Olly to stand in an upright position independently.
“QEF is a truly wonderful and amazing place for Olly. It provides the best, professional neuro-rehabilitation care that Olly needs 24 hours a day, that Jersey simply cant offer.”
The above statement is from Matt Daly, a close friend of Olly’s who we considered an inspiration to all of us at Peas & Glove. Before Olly’s accident, the pair could regularly be seen spending time together jamming on their guitars whilst Olly beatboxed and sung to the tunes. He recounted Olly as being “a genuine, loving, caring young lad, who would do anything to cheer someone up when they were having a bad day. He could always succeeded in putting a smile on their faces”. We have always had a very close knit group of friends who would spend countless hours enjoying each others company and laughing till the sun went down over the beach. Olly acted as a brother to all who knew him. Matt constantly demonstrates the significance of what that bond means to us through the actions he has taken since the accident. He frequently visits Olly, living in the guest cottage of QEF and devotes months of his time assisting the staff to aid in his friend’s recovery. His experience of the staff at QEF highlights their focus on what Olly can achieve, rather than what can not be achieved. He witnesses the various activities they engage in with Olly, learning how they can specifically improve his condition. With this information he is then able to report any progress back to the group at home.
QEF offers a diverse range of one-to-one support programmes tailored to help improve cognition, communication, physical, social and functional abilities; and vocational skills. Their specialist services are delivered by a highly experienced interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. The team is composed of a consultant in rehabilitation medicine, specialist nurses, neurotherapists: physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, neuropsychologists, a vocational support team, and Art and Music tutors.
Peas and Glove collected an official accolade for our achievements towards the end of last year. Brontey won the ‘Angel of Jersey’ award after being nominated by Caroline Evans (Olly’s mother) for her continued support to the family. She described this as being “a real honour to be recognised and something I cannot wait to share with Olly in the future.” Alongside the award, she was granted with £1,000 which was spent on travel arrangements for a group of Olly’s closest friends to visit him. Everyone who attended spent an afternoon with him at Brighton’s Sealife centre, followed by a music session at QEF the next day. As Christmas was just around the corner, everyone was thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate with Olly whilst allowing him to be near the pleasant beach environment. The award not only marks yet another milestone in our journey, but also displays the kind sentiment of Brontey and all those who continue to contribute to Peas and Glove at every given opportunity. Without the support of the community, we could never have come this far, therefore it seems fitting to finish with Paul’s summary of our journey.
“Peas & Glove has further introduced me to who Olly was, the life he led away from his family and the love he had for those who he spent time with. Through my involvement in Peas & Glove I have gained access to people I would have never met. I have made new friendships and acquaintances with people I would otherwise never have crossed paths with. I have learned even more about his character and attitude and actually, it made me even more proud of him than I was already - and that was always high anyway.”
