TsukkiYama week day 4: Retail

Working at the FreshMart seafood department wasn’t much fun, but Tsukishima needed a job. Despite the pathetic pay and annoying customers, he stayed because he got to see Yamaguchi.

Working next to the bakery was one of the saving graces of his job and one of the main reasons he stayed. On the few occasions that Yamaguchi came out from the back of the bakery Tsukishima got to watch him. Usually he was putting out the fresh baked pastries and breads on nearby tables. Sometimes he would walk past to go on his break. But each time Tsukishima saw him come out the door his heart fluttered, which was unfamiliar to him.

He could easily guess what it meant, but Tsukishima was too proud to admit it. Even though he could feel his lips tug into a smile whenever he saw Yamaguchi’s freckled face or errant cowlick.

Tsukishima thought he was subtle in his affections, but of course his coworkers Bokuto and Kuroo found out almost immediately. It wasn’t hard to notice that Tsukishima kept stealing glances at Yamaguchi whenever he came through the door. But they were the only ones to notice Yamaguchi glancing at Tsukishima as well.

Today Yamaguchi was putting out fresh pies, and Tsukishima was too busy watching him to pay attention to the fish he was cutting.

“Y’know, Tsukki…” Kuroo said, taking the knife from his distracted coworker.

“Don’t call me that,” Tsukishima muttered.

“Fine. But you should go talk to him.”

“I can’t, he’s busy working.”

“At least say hi when he walks by.”

As Yamaguchi rolled the now empty carriage past the seafood counter, Tsukishima spoke up. “Hello, Yamaguchi.”

Yamaguchi stopped and blinked, surprised to be greeted. “Hello. How are you?”

“I’m doing well, thanks.”

Yamaguchi nodded and smiled, then returned to the back of the bakery. Tsukishima felt foolish. “Well that went swell.”

“Skip the pleasantries next time and ask him about what he puts out.”

“But I can see that they’re pies.”

“Ask about the flavors and what kind of pies they are. Take interest in what his work. Working in the bakery is more interesting than working with raw fish anyways.”

After a while Yamaguchi reappeared and stood in front of the doughnut case next to the seafood counter. He stood there for a while, personally handing out doughnuts to people who wanted them.

He and Tsukishima kept stealing glances at each other, but neither of them noticed the other looking. Kuroo and Bokuto found amusement in it for a while before they grew bored and pushed Tsukishima over to Yamaguchi.

Tsukishima almost tripped on his way over to the doughnut case, but he still startled Yamaguchi. “You...you’re giving out doughnuts?”

Yamaguchi gave him a tired smile that made Tsukishima’s heart flutter. “Yeah, FreshMart wasn’t selling as many doughnuts as they would like. So they think having someone out here to advertise them might help with sales.”

“So...you’re standing out here waiting for someone to come up and ask for a doughnut?”

“Yeah. The rest of my shift I’m just standing here.”

Tsukishima felt sorry for him, but at least now he was outside the bakery where they could see each other more.

“What kind of doughnuts do you have?”

Each doughnut that Yamaguchi listed made Tsukishima’s stomach growl even though he didn’t have much of a sweet tooth. What really caught his attention was the one with strawberry icing.

“Do you want that one?” Yamaguchi asked, noticing him eyeing it. “They’re only a dollar each. Pretty cheap for a doughnut this size.”

“No thanks, I don’t have my wallet on me anyways.”

“Maybe I’ll save you one then. We get to eat whatever we don’t sell.”

It was very nice of him to offer, but Tsukishima declined and returned to the seafood counter. Later that evening as Tsukishima was leaving work, he found a strawberry frosted doughnut in his bag with a note that said, “We should talk more often.”

Bokuto and Kuroo teased Tsukishima about the doughnut for a few days before inquiring when he would talk to Yamaguchi again. “Probably this Sunday when he does the doughnuts again.”

The pair was dissatisfied with this answer and looked at each other. “We’ll have to bring Tsukki to him,” Bokuto said.

“Don’t call me that, and what are you talking about?”

“Sounds good to me!” Kuroo agreed. Then, ignoring his questions, Bokuto and Kuroo each took Tsukishima by an arm and marched him through the door into the bakery.

“Good afternoon, bakers!” Bokuto announced. “We’re here to visit!”

Everyone looked up at them, including Yamaguchi, who was packaging cake slices at a counter. The baker greeted them warmly and began speaking to Bokuto and Kuroo at once. The pair let go of Tsukishima and not too subtly pushed him in the direction of Yamaguchi.

Yamaguchi smiled at Tsukishima, sending a storm of butterflies through his stomach. “Hello again,” he said awkwardly.

“Hello again,” Yamaguchi echoed, continuing to package the cake slices.

With no idea of what to say, Tsukishima looked at the tall pink and white cake slices. “What are you packaging?”

“Skyscraper supreme strawberry shortcake cheesecake slices!”

Tsukishima’s eyes widened. “That sounds delicious.”

Yamaguchi chuckled, setting fire to Tsukishima’s heart. “Doesn’t it? There’s also chocolate, red velvet, and carrot cake varieties.”

“Sounds like you have a lot to package.”

“I do, but it goes by quick. Then I have to put the label stickers on them.”

Tsukishima finds that it’s quite easy to talk to Yamaguchi, and the warm smells of the bakery relaxed him. Yamaguchi must smell like the bakery all the time since he works here. Tsukishima is suddenly worried that he might smell like raw fish.

Yamaguchi notices Tsukishima glancing between him and the strawberry shortcake cheesecake. “Is strawberry your favorite flavoring?”

“It is. I’m also quite partial to shortcake.”

That evening Tsukishima found a strawberry shortcake parfait cup in his bag, with another note that said, “Let’s take our break together next time.”

“Hey, Tsukki!” Yamaguchi said as he walked out of the bakery. “I hope you don’t mind me calling you that.”

“Hello, Yamaguchi. Of course I wouldn’t mind,” Tsukishima said looking up from the salmon he was packaging. He ignored the scoffs from Bokuto and Kuroo. “Ready for a break?”

“Absolutely.”

The break room was windowless with stagnant air and one fluorescent light that flickered in the corner. The microwave hadn’t been cleaned in years and the refrigerator smelled worse than the back room of the seafood department. Despite this Tsukishima and Yamaguchi’s conversation was cheerful and light.

As it turns out they both had a lot in common; they lived in the same area, both played volleyball in their spare time, and went to the same university.

Tsukishima doesn’t want to admit how much Kuroo and Bokuto’s interference has helped him get closer to Yamaguchi, but he showed his appreciation by staying extra hours. This in turn allowed him more time to get to know Yamaguchi.

“So you learned to play from your older brother?” Yamaguchi asked.

“Yeah. I get to play with his team every now and then,” Tsukishima said. “He’s also the one who found this job for me. Otherwise I wouldn’t willingly be working with raw fish.”

“I’m glad that we get to work together,” Yamaguchi said smiling. “And I’m even happier that we get to talk to each other like this.”

Tsukishima smiled as well. A small, genuine smile which was rare for him. Yamaguchi seemed to be the only person who could pull it out of him.

“Perhaps you’ll have to sneak me some treats more often,” he said teasingly.

“Perhaps I will…” Yamaguchi replied with a smirk. Then leaning forward over the table, he placed a quick kiss on Tsukishima’s cheek.

Tsukishima’s face turned as red as the strawberries he loved, and Yamaguchi laughed. “Sorry, Tsukki.”

Tsukishima shook his head - more so to clear it than anything else. His smile widened as he leaned across the table and gave Yamaguchi a kiss as well. “Don’t be.”

This was a bit rushed but I still didn’t manage to post it on the correct day. Oh well. Based on some of my own experiences working in a grocery store bakery.

There’s the sound of Shrek in the distance. But it’s not quite Shrek, you know it’s Shrek because the word “Shrek” keeps coming up, but it’s a different language and the voices all sound wrong.

It feels like the entire house is moving. It’s not though. It’s just your boyfriend moving furniture in the room next door.

You tried to listen to some music earlier to relax. It didn’t go well. You started thinking about your book. your character, that reminded how big of a failure that attempt was and you remember how you spend fifteen years convincing yourself you’d have your life together by the time you were eighteen and, well, now you’re twenty four and less put together than ever.

You think about your birthday, how nobody wished you a happy one on the right day, you think about how every gift you got was just proof nobody was listening.

Harry Potter stuff after explaining to all your friend in great detail how refuse to support it due to the controversial opinion of the author.

Owl jewellery, because they saw a TikTok about owls on my account... said TikTok was literally talking about how I said at the age four owls were my favourite animal and now I could never escape from it.

Tupperware, because you were saying the other day how you needed some because your current Tupperware was non-microwavable. The new tupperware is none-microwavable.

You think about how it’s Christmas Day, how you’re sitting at your computer writing a tumblr post, like nothing has change in ten years. Except, things are worse.

I have less people to talk to.

I’m financially independent which means I get to work ten hours a day to barely get by.

I’ve finally accepted writing forever be a hobby and never a career.

I’ve accepted that if I haven’t improved my drawing in any way in the past twenty years, it’s probably safe to assume things aren’t going to get better.

I’m beginning, after years on a waiting list, to understand, doctors telling me you’re on a waiting list for tests is just another way of saying, “you don’t look like you’re going to die in the next few weeks so we can’t really afford to care and you can’t afford for private healthcare so just suck up the pain and here are more powerful pain killers.”

I’m getting tired of telling myself things will get better.

I’m tired of the internet, I feel like I should get off it. Seeing everybody else on TikTok and Instagram, with happy families, big friend groups, stuff. Just, stuff. I wish I could afford to buy books, to buy art supplies or even just some nice christmas decorations.

I wish I had the time to decorate.

I was literally doing an exam the day before yesterday. I was literally at work that morning.

I feel like my life is just falling to piece.

But... it’s not.

Like, I’m in my early twenties, of course my life is in shambles, I haven’t figured out what glue to use yet. But, the day before yesterday, after work and before my exam I went out with my classmates to a bar on campus, they have a really good many with drink and dessert for six euros. Even with my job that’s only two hours work and it was lovely.

My boyfriend bought me these little plastic drawers for my desk the other day and this morning I took all my stickers and organised them in there. It’s amazing. I love these stuff.

I’m twenty four, I live with my boyfriend most of the year, I have two beautiful cats, I have a huge collection of teas, stickers and scented candles because they’re cheap and give me huge amounts of happiness for a very small cost.

I have a growing collection of house plants.

And I am about to finish university. I’m working in investigation, what in the world is cooler than investigating? I mean, I want to be an author but investigating is not bad at all!

It’s like... in some ways I don0t know who I am. In other ways, I don’t even know if that matters.

I don’t know where I’m going to be in a year or two.

But today is Christmas, I’m depressed, but the dollar store down the street is open, so I’m going to buy some air dry clay and try and sculpt my depression away.

Homemade Mini Sketchbooks!

More of a crafty thing today, but hey at least I'm still taking a break from all the swatch chart stuff I've watched a few different videos over the past few months talking about bookbinding and making your own custom sketchbooks and artwork storage/organizing, etc. And at some point it just kind of clicked that I wanted to give those sorts of things a try, just to see what I could do and make my book/paper organization life a little more interesting than just the store-bought stuff. Not pictured here: I recently acquired a disc-bond planner/notebook to try out, since disc binding seems like a great hybrid system between a spiral-bound notebook and a binder for someone like me who prefers spiral-bound stuff but likes the option of taking pages in and out or moving them around. The only problem is disc binding stuff is kinda expensive, so it'll be a while before I've built up a small collection of supplies/options to pick from. I also purchased some book rings and extra folders and stuff from DollarTree a while back and have since used a combination of those things and some old divider pages and pieces from old notebooks to put together a sort of makeshift custom binder/book that I keep all my swatches and reference pages for my various art supplies in. It's kinda neat, but not so fancy that I feel like showing off photos of it. These little roughly 4"x6" sketchbooks were pretty much testers to see what I could do with what supplies I have. I made two to try out two different binding directions (side/right bound and top-bound) and two different kinds of glue: Elmer's CraftBond Tacky Glue, and Aleene's Original Tacky Glue. Neither is necessarily "preferred" glue for bookbinding (as you can get specific PVA glue just for bookbinding) but they dry flexible, are made for crafty/paper things, and one was on clearance for $1.97, the other came from DollarTree, so I figured I'd give them a shot before investing in more expensive glue. I'll run down my process in a second, but I do just want to say the main thing I felt like I really needed a proper supply for/could have done better had the urge to finally make some books not struck me in the middle of the night was a press to hold my block of individual pages for the inside together while applying the glue. Traditionally, this is done with a fancy-looking contraption called a book press, but I don't have one of those and they are also surprisingly expensive. So my option was to stack a bunch of books together, and I admittedly didn't do as good of a job with that as I could have, but now I know better for next time. But because of this and the odd hours I was keeping, the pages aren't aligned super nicely, a couple are a little loose, and I did have one page fall out of the top-bound/orange cover book. That said, I made these at roughly the same time, going over the same steps for both and working on one while I waited for the other to dry, etc. I started with the covers by taking some metallic cardstock I have and cutting it down to the 4"x6" size I wanted, and then for the front and back covers on the blue book and the front cover on the orange book I grabbed some scrapbook paper I had and cut that down to size and used double-sided tape to attach the paper to the pieces of cardstock (yes, the blue one that looks like denim/jeans is actually paper and not fabric! I got a pad of paper like that from DollarTree because I thought it might come in handy, and it does look pretty cool for a book cover!). I purposely left the back cover on the orange book blank/as just the plain cardstock just to see how it looked. Alternatively, I could've used just paper (which I thought would be too thin/easily messed up) or chipboard--that brownish cardboard stuff that makes up the back part of a lot of store-bought sketchbooks--for the covers, but A. I didn't have any individual pieces and B. I didn't feel like chopping up the back of any existing sketchbooks I had. Not for just these testers, anyway. I also could have used glue to attach the decorative paper, but gluing paper like that tends to make it warp/wrinkle/boil/bubble if you're not careful, and also once the glue is stuck down it is STUCK, and so I figured I'd have a little more room to breathe in getting the paper placement right with the tape. Funnily enough, the tape ended up being way more forgiving than I thought, but I'll talk about that in a bit. Once I had the covers decorated with the paper the way I wanted, I moved on to the most tedious/longest part of the process: The paper on the inside. I recently picked up a cheap sketchbook with paper I'm not super-duper crazy about, and I had pretty much already decided that would be the paper I used for these little tester books. It's still usable, it's just not my more expensive favorite paper. And there's plenty of it, so I didn't mind "wasting" it on these books. I ripped out 20 pages from the sketchbook, expecting to get two smaller pages for the books I was making out of each larger page, but I actually ended up getting three smaller pages out of each, and so instead of 20 pages for each of the minis, I ended up with 30. This was a good thing since it gives the books a bit more weight/thickness and made the binding steps a little easier as a result. I stacked all of the pages for each book together and got one edge as even as possible--although I could've done better and gone through and lined up a few pages at a time to get them a little bit more flush together--and then very carefully placed the stack between some heavy books to hold them together and handle them still so I could apply the glue to bind the pages together. I unscrewed the tops of each kind of glue and applied it to the spines/paper stacks with a brush. Each book got three coats of glue total, just to make sure things were nice and secure. (Or you know as secure as possible for homemade in the middle of the night) While I was waiting for each coat of glue to dry, I took the covers and some more scrapbook paper and measured out the splash pages--just double the width of the cover so it can be folded over into two pages--to make the books feel a little fancier. (I'm not totally sure that's what they're called but that's what I'm calling them--I mean the interior pages between the book covers and the actual book pages). Then I used the double-sided tape again to attach the paper to the inside of each cover, and I found out by accident that while the double-sided tape is nice and sticky, it is actually repositionable! It doesn't totally rip up the paper if you try to unstick it! (Well, as long as you're kinda careful, anyway). And so I was able to reposition the splash pages until I felt like they were as straight/aligned as they were going to get. And while I was still waiting just to make sure the glue was dry before moving on, I decided to add some stickers to the orange book cover just to jazz it up a little. The plain flower print was fine, but I felt like it needed something and I was probably never going to use the stickers for anything else (I'm a sticker collector/hoarder), so on the book they went! By this time the blocks of paper were ready, and so I removed them from the stack of books and one at a time, pulled off a piece of wide washi tape for the spine of each and then very carefully aligned the covers to the blocks of paper and used my desk to help fold the tape around the spine as crisply as possible. (This step could have also been done on the splash pages and the covers attached afterward to hide the tape, but my tape is pretty so I'm okay with it being exposed). Now, I could have left the books just like that, but I wanted to be just a little bit fancier and used a paper punch to round the exposed corners of the covers and pages. This added a LOT of polish to the final look since as I mentioned earlier my pages weren't aligned super evenly. And just to be cheeky I did use a stamp and signed my name on the back cover of the orange book too. I'm honestly not sure which of the two I like better in the end--they both came out better than I was expected for my first tries! Honestly, this is more of a time-consuming task than it is difficult or expensive (at least the way I did it, you could very easily make this a SUPER expensive thing based on the materials and equipment you use, but the absolutely essential stuff can all be purchased pretty cheaply; a lot of it even just from the dollar store for $1!) and so it was pretty fun, and the end result is really satisfying because, "oh, yeah, I made this book!" And you don't have to stick with a small size like I did--you can make full-size sketch/notebooks this way too! Or you can use these methods to just upgrade existing sketchbooks and stuff that you have to covers or sizes you like better. I haven't quite decided what I'm going to attempt next, but I do want to play around with making more of my own books like this, and I'll likely post them here to share when I do. Also, let me know if you guys would be interested in a more in-depth/picture/video tutorial of some kind for the process of how I made these and if there's enough interest I'll see what I can do! I know there are a lot of things to take into consideration when getting insurance quotes and all but I was on craigslist and I found a nice little 2005 Audi A4 1.8t and I wanted to get an idea of insurance. I know that it is considered a luxury sedan and its foreign from Germany so those are going to make it more expensive. It puts out around 170hp and 160 trq. The car has great crash test ratings too. Seller is asking a little under $6000 and I don't know how many miles are on it yet. Other things to consider are that im only 19 so it would go under my fathers name. I know its hard to estimate what insurance would be but if anyone can come up with a good idea or if they own one themselves. Got in an accident with no collision on my car insurance?
