*if you've heard a couple songs but don't really know much about them, or haven't listened in a long while, you can play!
update: the highest votes went to gudetama. but was it correct? here are the full titles and albums.
❌ "put your hand inside the puppet head" - they might be giants
the opening verse makes reference to leaving one's job and how "it's sad to say, you will romanticise all the things you've known before. it was not, not, not so great". according to flansburgh, "the lyric revolves around the idea that looking back on anything colors it in sentimentality".
❌ "I'll sink manhattan" - they'll need a crane (ep)/miscellaneous T
this is a flansburgh song, but linnell explained its meaning in a 1989 interview with NME as "a song about a guy who somehow figures out how to sink the island of manhattan just to kill his ex-lover, so it's his apology to the other people he's gonna kill in between. he's just gotta do it!"
❌ "meet james ensor" - john henry
it's about james ensor (belgium's famous painter).
❌ "wicked little critta" - mink car
from the tmbg unlimited collection: "forged in the crucible of an eastern massachusetts junior high, this song expresses the dreams, fears and hopes of a new england young adult" the lyrics seem to suggest said young adult fantasising about being a sports star alongside bobby orr and john havlicek while goofing off outside.
❌ "working undercover for the man" - mink car
from flansburgh: "it's more a meditation on the "mod squad" [a 1968 crime series about cool undercover detectives] than anything else. the idea of the narc just seems... like, those episodes of "dragnet" where they have the young undercover dress in a hippie suit."
✔️ "talent is an asset" - kimono my house
the lyrics illustrate an overly-cautious family shielding their very gifted child from others, to keep him studious and soak in all the glory, and is heavily implied to be little albert einstein through puns on relatives and relativity. it's not by them, tho. it's by the band sparks. it came 2nd, so I think many of you recognised it (or really wanted to see the results!)
❌ "bee of the bird of the moth" - the else
"this is a song about a creature called a hummingbird moth, which imitates another creature, which imitates yet another creature. it's completely fucked up, and can only be explained in song!" so they did.
❌ "2082" - join us
thewrap's review of the album describes this song as, "a science-fiction short story (...) a protagonist who travels into the future, finds himself hobbled but still unhappily alive all the way into the next millennium, and travels back to the title year to smother himself with a pillow in a mercy killing". fun!
❌ "call you mom" - nanobots
referred to by linnell as an "oedipus pan" song, the lyrics follow an unfortunate young man beginning a relationship with a woman, getting dumped due to his behaviour of treating her like a mother figure, then infantilising a possibly younger woman in a different relationship and in turn leaving her, who goes on to experience the same issues. fun! (altho, the final chorus actually still refers to her Mom leaving, not her dad, I got the details wrong there in the poll).
❌ "gudetama's busy days" - dial-a-song / my murdered remains
yes, that's a real song. quote flansburgh: "(...) it is really just about feeling isolated from the world, even if you are in a crowded place and manically trying to keep up with your life. the character of gudetama appealed to me because he is such a mopey sad sack."
❌ "marty beller mask" - album raises new and troubling questions
this is real, too! it's just about how marty beller was actually an alter ego of whitney houston the whole time. he's not, but wouldn't that be interesting. the song name-checks multiple of her own in the lyrics. it was temporarily retired out of respect following houston's death (4 months after its release), returning to live performances ten years later in 2022.
#I know this minor detail might make one obvious but I can't let it slide!#sorry everyone. would you kindly delete any old versions and pass it around again. <3#tmbg

Another month passes by with the Avengers going on more missions. Some with you, some without you.
Steve walked into the lab to talk to Bruce and was surprised to see you there.
“Y/n” he exclaimed. “It’s good to see you, does this mean you have your full memory back?”
“Sorry to disappoint you, or maybe not, but I’m no further along in my memory recall than I was at the Romania mission. I decided to come back to see if Bruce can help with the Flashback program he created.”
“Sure” Bruce responded. “It’s still experimental so I can’t guarantee anything, but we can try for sure”
Bucky walked into the lab at that moment. “Hey Y/n, what’s shaking.”
“Hey Buck, I’ve missed you” you say to him with a huge smile. “Fancy going drinking tonight?”
Steve frowns at the 2 of you. “Oh can it Captain. Why don’t you go back to your fiancé, or did she find out about you and dump your sorry ass already?”
Steve walked out of the room, shaking his head and headed to the gym to vent some frustration on the poor punching bags. Tony was sure he’d be forking out for some new ones in the not too distant future.
Bucky looked at you. “That was a bit harsh Sweets.”
“No lectures Barnes” you said. “Just drinking, before I start this flashback program with Bruce tomorrow.”
Later that night, Bucky takes you to the local bar on his bike. You love the freeing feeling of the wind in your face, your arms wrapped around Bucky’s abs, even though there was no romantic spark between you. A few of the others joined in on the party, happy to have you back and wanting to celebrate.
“Cap not joining us?” you question nobody in particular. “Typical..”
“Sweets. Harsh” Bucky reiterated his comment from earlier.
“I don’t get why you’re jumping to his defence so much, Buck. I mean I know he’s your friend and all, but you know what he did.”
“All I’m saying is there is more to the story than you know Y/n. So just be careful what you say without all the facts. You wouldn’t want to say something that you can’t take back.”
You blow him a raspberry. “Whatever, come dance with me Barnes.”
You and Bucky are having fun on the dance floor, dancing and singing along to the songs when Steve walks in.
“Hey Steve, How’s Noah?” Nat enquires of him.
“He’s doing as well as can be expected, missing Y/n of course. He’s with Pepper, so I know he’s safe but I wish things were back to normal already. What’s going on there” he asks, pointing to Bucky and Y/n.
“Nothing serious, she’s just blowing off some steam” Nat tells him. “You know Buck would never.”
“I’m done with this” Steve declares. “If things don’t move along with this flashback program Bruce is going to try, I’m either just going to tell her, or I’m leaving and moving on with mine and Noah’s lives.”
“Well that’s a bit dramatic, but whatever you think is fair Cap.” Nat replied.
NEXT DAY IN THE LAB
You’re laying on a bed, all wired up and ready to go. Bruce starts the program, which basically sends you to sleep, allowing you to access memories that your brain is subconsciously stopping you from remembering.
You see more missions and they all make sense. Some are successful, some not so much.
You wake, realising you’ve been “under” for about 3 hours.
“How was that kid?” Tony asked genuinely curious as this was the first time they’d put Bruce’s theories to a physical test.
“Meh, I saw a heap of missions, some went well, some didn’t. Nothing earth-shattering. Is that all my life has been the last 4 years?” you asked sounding a little disheartened with the fact that there’d been nothing other than the missions coming through.
Your brain was struggling to reconcile that you’d had no significant relationships or even good hook-ups to remember this whole time.
Tony looked apprehensive, in truth, he was weighing up in his mind how much to tell you. “Well, no it isn’t, but you got a heap of memories back today, so we should try again tomorrow, see what more comes back.”
“Ok. Yeah, I am super tired after that so I think I’m going to go rest for a while. I’ll see you for dinner later tonight” you responded.
You get back to your room, turn on the shower and jump in. You always felt soothed in your muscles and soul when you’re under the running water.
You’re glad to be getting your memories back but you still feel like there’s so much missing.
You’re startled as you hear a cough at the bathroom door, turning to see Steve standing there, leaning against the door frame.
“Rogers, you can’t be in here, we are not picking up where we were when I left. You shouldn’t see me like this.”
“I’m sure I’ve seen it all before, but ok, I’ll wait in here for you.” He said, moving into the bedroom.
You yell after him “No, you’ll leave, I’m not doing this with you Rogers. Seriously, have some respect for me if you don’t have any for anyone else, even yourself.”
You take your time, going through your skincare routine and a few other things that were unnecessary. If he is waiting in the bedroom for you, you’re going to make him sweat, or get fed up and leave.
You wrap your hair and put a towel around your body and saunter into the bedroom.
You see that Steve is lying on the bed, eyes closed. Thankful that he seems to be asleep, you start getting dressed.
“Well, isn’t that a great view to open your eyes to”
You shriek and grab the towel covering yourself. “Geez Rogers, you about gave me a heart attack. I thought I told you to leave.”
“Sweetheart, I just want to talk to you. That’s all I’ve wanted this whole time.”
“Don’t call me sweetheart, Captain. Save that for your fiancé, if she’ll even talk to you after I work out who she is and let her know what you’ve been doing.”
“Dammit Y/n, just give me a chance. Sometimes things have simple explanations.”
“Listen Steve, I’ve already told you, no explanation can fix the fact that you cheated on your fiancé with me, when I had no idea. You took advantage of my lack of memory for your own gain. One day I might forgive you but I don’t think I can ever forget it. I just hope you’ve come clean with her.”
Steve sighed “Honestly, I haven’t, I keep trying, but each time she shuts me down.”
Steve gets up off the bed, kisses you on the forehead and says “Just know that when you’re ready for the truth, I’ll be here” and with that, he leaves the room.
You thought you’d got him out of your system but that kiss left you a bit flustered. You sat there for a while wondering what he meant and what truth he could possible tell you that would change anything.

Letter
I hesitated to write this post, i did say in another post that i decided to post it later (wow that’s a lot of “post” in the same sentence lol) so i can say that this has been sitting in my drafts since hours ago but i guess i’ll just post it anyways. As you can guess it’s about “Letter”
So as you may know, Jimin brought us a surprise which is a hidden track called “Letter” with JK doing background vocals (The Jikook subunit we never knew we’d get, well close enough i still see it as a subunit i don’t care sue me), thing is, i’ve seen some “theories” going around it about how “It’s a letter to us 🥺” or “It’s a Jikook song” and well.. I don’t agree with either one of those, why? i’ll tell you
Yes despite being a Jikooker i’m not a crazy cultist to come up with theories where i just stop seeing Jimin and JK as two individuals, we don’t do that in this house. So reason why i disagree is because this album is supposed to about Jimin all about himself, about facing himself, about growing out of a toxic past, leaving it behind and taking new fresh steps full of acceptance of who he truly is, he said it himself he didn’t want to have any collab because it wouldn’t make sense for someone else to sing about what HE feels.
Now “Letter” is supposed to come after “Like Crazy” English Version, well not really after it but it’s part of it, and i know that not everyone is smart enough to understand the message, many ignored the purpose of the album completely and the clear messages written ON THE ALBUM to interpret it but let me just rewrite it (i know damn well the homophobes will turn a blind eye to this) On Jimin’s album this is what’s written
Key sentence : The reflection of myself in an unfamiliar appearance. Despite people freaking out about “OMG i thought they were going to kiss” “It’s a break up song and the girl is supposed to be his gf/ex-gf”
(Okay i know i’m now talking about Like Crazy while the initial post said i was going to talk about Letter but trust the process)
While Jimin did say that Like Crazy was based on the movie, it also wasn’t LITERALLY based on it, there’s this general idea, a story each can relate to it their own way and that’s what Jimin did, In an interview this was his reply
Key word : Ambiguous.
Jimin isn’t making an OST for the movie so why would anyone think he’s taking the literal story for his song? Going back to what he said about his reflection and the girl that made people go crazy without doing the minimum effort to understand, she basically represents Jimin himself, they walk towards each other but never collide because they are reflections
And to give you more insight about this, this is basically coming from “The Four Carl Jung Archetypes”. Carl Jung identified four main archetypes: the persona, the shadow, the anima or animus and the self. These are a result of collective, shared ancestral memories that may persist in art, literature and religion but aren’t obvious to the eye. These recurring themes help us understand the Jungian archetypes. These Jungian archetypes represent a journey from an unconscious state to individuation: a merging of the conscious and the unconscious.
What people also failed to notice is the very clear queer-code in the MV, from the colors, little details, clothings, etc.. As someone said on Twitter “This feels exactly like how my gay ass feels when i’m in a bar surrounded by straight people”. The outfit :
Which has Robet Michael Mapplethorpe in it
Now this one is my very own interpretation so take it with a grain of salt but this
Personally to me, him sitting between a woman and a man kissing says a lot to me. It’s the fact that he’s in the middle.. I’m not going to further explain those who get it get it, those who don’t don’t. But that’s my own personal interpretation i’m just slipping it in here.
Now that this is out of the way let’s go back to “Letter” this whole talk about “Like Crazy” is mainly because to me Letter is related to it since very obviously both tracks are one technically speaking. So while people think it’s a letter to Army but i’m over here like “If it’s a letter to Army, why is it hidden? Why would they make it so that it’s only accessible to people who have the physical album? I thought the purpose of an Army dedicated song was for it to be OFFICIALLY out for all Army to listen to” because yes despite that being uploaded online by other Army but if we all decided to be petty and selfish af, this won’t see the light of the day on the internet and that defies the whole purpose of a song for Army.
As i said above this album is about himself, he’s talking about his own struggles so saying that this is an Army song as if Army are a struggle too is a bit.. And that also on his very first solo album where he’s supposed to focus on sharing a message about himself. When Hobi decided to dedicate a song to Army he didn’t put it in JITB it was a separate single, Joon didn’t have no Army dedicated song in Indigo either because again their solo Albums are about themselves, it’s a journey to share with us their individuality and their own colors. Jin didn’t have much of a choice he had to leave for MS there wasn’t enough time for an album or maybe he himself didn’t really feel the need to make an album and his main focus was to make a song for Army which he did and gifted us Astronaut. (GOD I MISS JIN)
The lyrics too, i as Army and as Jimin’s FAN, it didn’t feel directed to me. “Now I'll be the one to hold you, When you want to cry, So you won't trip and fall” or even “Because we don't know what days await us, Though it's scary, though we're afraid, Never forget that we're together” those feel like something related to himself as well, let’s also not forget that technically speaking it’s related to “Like Crazy” too which i explained above, why would anything Army related be scary? Why would we be afraid? What is there to be afraid of? Also how will Jimin hold us when we want to cry?
I also said that i disagree on the fact that it’s a “Jikook song” i don’t know how to explain precisely but some people seem to interpret it as THEIR song whereas even if Jimin is actually singing about his relationship with JK it’s still about his OWN feelings, his OWN promises, his OWN confession, despite JK doing the background vocals in which they harmonized so very beautifully kudos to them, i still think it’s all about Jimin, yes there might’ve been a reason why he chose JK himself for that or maybe they chose that together because really it could’ve been anyone and JK could’ve done the background vocal to any other song in the album yet it was on this one. He really did a lot of effort to open up to us so i really hope people see it as his pov on everything.
I made a post relating the song to There for You from GCFT and yes quite honestly to me it feels like a response to “I’ll be there for you but you gotta be there for me too” and yet again it still goes back to the same thing, it is Jimin’s OWN reply. I also noticed how Army songs didn’t have other members in them (well i mean Army songs in this solo era) so again why would this be an Army song if JK was in it? I don’t even know if all of this makes a lot of sense, can’t say i’m the best with words but i tried to convey how i see it.
Oh and let us be reminded that this was his reaction to knowing we found out about and and so cheesily saying that he won't tell us about it for now lol
Boy what are you all giggly and shy for?

Hi everyone!
Wow! I can’t believe arc 1 of the Moonbeast Saga is already complete! 🥳🥳🥳 I just wanted to say that I’m so thankful for all the love and enthusiasm from all of you. Seeing all the likes, reblogs, and even replies always brings a smile to my face and helps remind me in some of my harder moments that I’m really achieving my dream of creating stories that can reach and help others, just like others’ stories have done for me. Thank you and I hope you’re excited for what’s to come! (I know I am hehe…😛)
As a special treat to celebrate, I wanted to share certain behind-the-scenes pieces for MB Arc 1, including old comic page thumbnails, as well as Seven Rings arc 3. I was originally going to draw every chapter; however, life got in the way and I had to choose to take better care of my health over more content. Maybe I'll revisit and update these one day if I feel like it, but for now I'm happy with my work as it is.
Also, I have decided to finally include links to the music pieces that inspired various scenes within their respective chapters! To tell the truth, I was embarrassed by how nerdy and extra it seemed at first, but I feel that, especially in the Moonbeast Saga, the music adds so much more significance. I mean, Alter Chaos itself would never have existed had I not come up with these scenes WHILE listening to music throughout my teen years. There are various versions of the same songs leading to leitmotifs and character themes, overarching musical storytelling based on the stories they originally came from (Kingdom Hearts, Persona, etc.), and just overall far more emotional depth given how each song helps set the tone. Every saga has music hand-chosen to represent various events and themes, with the Moonbeast, Seven Rings, and "Generations" sagas (more on that last one later) having full-blown OSTs for every moment. I'm honestly so excited to add this special touch to a series so near and dear to my heart, and I hope it can add that much more meaning for all of you as it has for me. (It'll take a while to get to every chapter though, so bear with me through the process.)
That's all for now. I hope you enjoy these special looks and additions to the Alter Chaos experience! ^^

Jack 🏒
-> Whether it's starting a business, planning a spontaneous trip, or deciding to learn how to play the ukulele, he dives in with full force. He sees opportunity everywhere and can't resist chasing it, even if it’s just for the thrill of the chase. Rest assured, his to-do list is a living, breathing monster.
-> He'll flood your inbox with ideas for world domination; or at least a new app that helps you organise your sock drawer. Quick thinker who is always coming up with new plans, he never seems to run out of ideas, but he might run out of energy before he finishes one.
-> From numbers to symbols to obscure facts about ancient cultures, he's a walking trivia game. Try keeping up in a conversation with him; he'll drop some fun fact like, "Did you know there’s a species of jellyfish that’s biologically immortal?" and then move on to his next topic in the blink of an eye.
-> He has that magnetic energy that draws you in, and he's never short on ways to keep things interesting. One minute, he's passionately debating whether pineapple belongs on pizza; the next, he's serenading you with a song he's just written. He knows how to keep the mystery alive.
-> When something's not working, he doesn’t waste time. He'll burn it to the ground and rebuild it; probably with better Wi-Fi and a rooftop garden. You never know if his next "change" is going to be a genius idea or a hasty decision, but either way, it’ll be exciting.
-> Don’t even think about telling him what to do. He'll smile, nod, and then do exactly what he had planned to do in the first place. He'll take on the world solo and act like he's leading the charge, but hey, if you want to tag along, he might humour you.
-> He can go from calm and collected to fire-breathing dragon in seconds. But when he does blow up (which is rare, but epic), it’s usually because someone misunderstood his genius idea or tried to change his mind. You’ll get a quick temper, but it’ll cool off almost as fast, leaving everyone wondering, "Wait, what just happened?"
-> The flip side of his “let’s make things happen” energy is his tendency to overthink every little detail. If something goes wrong, he might spiral into a world of worst-case scenarios and make up stories of doom and gloom. But it’s also hilarious to watch as he creates elaborate dramas in his heads, only to solve it with a quick "Oh, never mind, I figured it out!"
Darker Jack 😨
-> When things aren’t going his way, he can turn into a control freak, demanding that everything be done exactly how he envisions it. If you challenge his authority, you might end up with a lecture about why his way is the only way.
-> He doesn’t forgive easily. If you cross him, even slightly, he'll cut ties without hesitation, leaving no room for reconciliation. It’s all about him, and if you’re no longer useful, you’re out of the picture.
-> His need for immediate action can sometimes lead to reckless decisions that backfire; whether it’s making hasty business choices, jumping into relationships too quickly, or taking risks he didn’t think through properly. He'll act first, think later.
-> His confidence is sometimes so over-the-top that he underestimates situations or other people. He'll make bold claims or assumptions that can easily lead to failure, but he'll be too stubborn to admit he was wrong until it’s too late.
-> He has a tendency to create problems out of nothing; sometimes for the thrill of it. A small issue becomes an exaggerated crisis in his hands, and before you know it, he's got everyone around him tangled up in unnecessary drama.
-> When things go wrong, instead of reflecting and improving, he might spiral into self-destructive habits like overindulgence in alcohol or risky behaviour. He could sabotage his own success because he can't sit still or accept failure gracefully.

First impression of each DJATS character after reading and watching?
Well interesting!
Let's see :
Warren
Book : chill funny one. Nice. Liked him. 8
Show: chill funny one. Nice. Good ethnicity change. Cool looks. Liked him. 8
Eddie
Book : Annoying but dignified on the end and understandable. 7
Show : Annoying, childish and rancorous. Didn't like the Camila's Affair. Without dignity. 4
Graham
Book: seemed rancorous and was later an incel. Didn't get over Karen even after 40 years. 4 .
Show: nice, cute, understandable, a good man there that you could marry happily tbh (Warren is like that too, Eddie IS pathetic, and Billy IS an unfaithfull toxic drunkard, as much as i like him, and IS in LOVE with many people at once...the logic choice for a boyfriend IS Graham, lets be honest). 9.
Teddy
Book : bossy. Kinda bitchy. Meh. 5
Show: father like figure, nice. I liked him better here. Ethnicity change works too. 8.
Rod :
Book : chill awesome and gay/bi. 9
Show: chill awesome . Sexuality non mentioned. 8 ( Its the scripters fault)
Karen
Book : feminist brunette tomboy rock star tired of everyone's shit. Not as good friend of Camila as you would think tbh. Did get over with Graham. Tough chick. 8
Show : Barbie Rock star. Feminist. Better friend to Camila at least she seemed to feel genuelly guilty about knowing but non telling Cami. Still in love with Graham. Less tough and nicer. I liked her better I guess? 9.
Daisy
Book : genious but also insane. Very selfish and a bitch, not very lovable, in fact sometimes you may hate her, charismatic but annoying. Camila wakes her conscience. Doesn't really know what she wants. She's said to have ethereal beauty and essence about her that's intoxicating and IS a beautiful redhead with Big blue eyes. 7.
Show : nicer, less selfish , she's not a bitch she is bitchy, but she isn't one you hate, she IS more like misguided but relatable main character with whimsical energy, Creative, artistic, she wants to be loved and a family aka what Camila have, her conscience wakes Itself, she regaings power and dignity in the end by walking away by herself tbh. Genious, slightly crazy, she also has ethereal beauty and essence about her that's intoxicating and IS a beautiful redhead with Big blue eyes. I loved her. 10.
Billy
Book : Hot and a decent dad. I didn't believe a Word he said about anything of the story..He was full of bullshit tbh. I found him unreliable, and a liar . But He was very truly charismatic. His Only reedeming quality was being a good dad apart of being a good musician. Suppossedly adores Camila with cute details like gifts , ice cream...etc But then threats her like crap cheating, falling for another and letting her raise 3 kids mostly by herself (playing with kids and being cute doesn't count, you should do the ugly parts too...Which he didn't do ever, first as a musician then as a composer/ song writer)
Something that bothered me a lot while reading was...If he truly wanted Daisy to find her "Camila" aka her water...why he messed with her??? Why he didn't throw her out the band ? Uh?
Cause he was a Liar!!!! He wanted to have her without the obvious repercussions (and Camila's complaints). Hadn't she left the way she did, prompted by Camila...They would had fallen into the affair hard.
Its just not real and It annoyed me a lot. No man is Schrodinger's cat unfaithfull (like unfaithfull and faithfull at once) , come on!! At least he IS entertaining to read XD . 7'5.
Show : im too biased here cause I love Sam. Hot and moderately decent dad, also a liar , but we saw what he did so...we are ready for his bullshit already XD.
Charismatic as fuck .
His true reedeming qualities are : Sam Claflin, Sam Claflin's singing voice, his fatherhood tiny moments with baby and kid Julia...and did i mention Sam Claflin being a hot rockstar?!...thats It. Whoever casted him did the Lord's job, cause had Billy been played by another actor everyone wouldn't be so in love or rooting for pairings ( Daisily or Camilly) everyone would hate him.
Sam has the talent to make you root for problematic people ( exceptions are in Nightingale and Peaky Blinders... for obvious reasons).
I liked that he relapses, I found It realistic. At least here he Only fuck Up (at the beginning, then he redeems) with one kid, not 3... If the bar for being a good dad consist in being there for the birth and to play a bit with your kid...Then the bar Its more than fucking under the ground, It IS as deep as the metro train!!! . He gets the 9, just because of Sam, excluding my Sam fangirlism... then 7'5 , and being generous, and Its for the relapse and the realistic infidelity approach...
Simone
Book : barely there. Super anecdotic. 6.
Show : my God, It was the best thing ever they did...They give her a soul!!! And interests outside Daisy!!! And a cool story. And a girlfriend...10. I couldn't love her more.
Camila...Brace yourself.
Book: Oh boy, I loved her. Patient , saintly, amazing strong traditional wife , awesome Mom. Good wife...not perfect (unfaithfull too and slightly manipulative) but very good overall. I loved her , so chill, strong and bossy. Tiny force to be reckoned with. 9.
Show: they sucked Camila's energy like vampires suck Blood ugh. They bared her of her strenght and made her say the cringiest quotes of the show , half of her dialogues were pure cringe. Camila Morrone Its so talented she Worked with that and made the changes watchable..
Taller and prettier, model like...it doesn't work as It should, as Camila was supposed to be less pretty than Daisy, here they are on the same level physically . Also Cami comes off as less cool and sometimes could come off even as bland. Her character IS now more realistic but IS the scorned wife™ , that here It doesn't really work, her peacefull confident behaviour with the literal quote "I hope I never see you again" as a prove translates as "I am the Queen and the King IS mine suck It Up bitch I won , go away"... I wish they respected her as she was , even with everything that they changed.
Had they kept her just like she was It would've been epic. But It wasn't. 7 . (For Camila Morrone's acting, not for her script).
Lisa and Julia are barely there, so i like them better in the show, as i'm seeing them, I guess? 7-8.
Nicky...i hated both versions, so yeah XD. - 10.
Thats It!!

For those who aren’t quite over An Ancient Love Song – the story from Lu Yuan’s perspective
Hello all! This will be a translation of two videos by Bilibili creator 小城问路家 that I found to be exquisite character analyses. I considered subtitling them, but I don’t want to rip the videos from his platform and I think they still work effectively in essay form. If you understand Chinese/have a Bilibili account, I highly recommend giving these videos some support:
Part 1 | Part 2
Below begins the full translation. FYI, I’ll be editing content where necessary to make this read better. I also recommend having a snack and some water at the ready because this is going to be quite lengthy.
Viewers are all aware that this drama is presented from Shen Buyan’s perspective. From his point of view, the instances in which he travels back are separated by a very short period of time. Between some leaps, there isn’t any separation at all. What that means is that his and Lu Yuan’s situations are drastically different.
When it comes to Lu Yuan, there are large periods of “empty” time in between Shen Buyan’s time leaps. Three years, five years, ten years, and then the rest of her life. Likely, the production team became aware of this problem and created a special episode that retells the story from elderly Lu Yuan’s perspective. But perhaps due to financial and time length restrictions, this special episode more so uses material from the full drama and plays it in reverse while incorporating elderly Lu Yuan’s narration in key moments.
What viewers should understand is that that episode is told from elderly Lu Yuan’s perspective, who has access to an omniscient point of view. She already knows about this entire story.
Meanwhile, what I think really appeals to us as viewers about this story are those long periods of waiting. During those three, five, ten years that Lu Yuan spends waiting, her understanding of the story isn’t actually complete. We can’t use an omniscient perspective to understand Lu Yuan. She only experiences small bits at a time, and she also refuses Shen Buyan’s attempts to reveal more details to her. When I rewatched the show from Lu Yuan’s perspective and ignored omniscient knowledge, I discovered all the little details that the director and writers slipped into the show.
Jing Ping Year 30: Lu Yuan, 18 years old
Let’s start from when Shen Buyan traveled to when Lu Yuan was 18 years old. At this time, Shen Buyan is carrying the regret of not fulfilling his promise to stay with her. He has come back in a very frail condition and encounters Lu Yuan. Then the following exchange occurs between Lu Yuan and Shen Buyan—remember this scene, as it will become relevant later:
LY: You recognize me? What is the matter? Why are you crying? SBY: Someone’s waiting for me. But I went the wrong way.
18-year-old Lu Yuan sings the following lines of poetry as she returns home. These lines also appear in prior parts of the plot:
At first, when we set out, The willows were fresh and green; Now, when we shall be returning, The snow will be falling in clouds.
Translation from the Chinese Text Initiative of the University of Virginia
This poem comes from the Classic of Poetry's "Caiwei," which tells the story of a soldier who is enlisted into battle at a faraway border. In the endlessly long years of war, he expresses longing for his family. These lines discreetly touch on the drama's three main themes: the cruelty of war, longing for your beloved, and prolonged periods of waiting.
Shen Buyan first decides to keep his distance from Lu Yuan. But when he discovers that she's being mistreated, he still reveals himself to pass knowledge on to Lu Yuan.
Some of his teachings are more obvious foreshadowing, like hiding secret codes in music or when he teaches her things about the nations that are beyond the time period's understanding—even though it isn't explicitly said, we can still guess that in addition to geography, he teaches her all about economic and military matters. Hence, he gives her what she will need to become the mother of the emperor who will unify the nine nations.
Aside from that, the first lesson that he teaches her is to "understand larger truths from smaller signs." When we first watch, we might see this teaching is foreshadowing for when Lu Yuan later takes down the husbandry official—it's through this lesson that she discovers the official is secretly selling military horses to Beilie.
But I think the lesson is mainly a prelude for the rest of the drama. When people talk about this show, they all say that Lu Yuan is a wise and intelligent female lead. I think that everything started with this lesson of "understanding larger truths from smaller signs," because it explains how later—be it with Shen Buyan's time travel or her battles with Li Yong—she's able to understand everything. This includes how, through very small details, she will deduce the truth of the reversed timelines. It's a huge reason why Lu Yuan is able to become the person she is at the very end.
After Shen Buyan finishes teaching her and she defeats the official, Shen Buyan decides to end things and leave. However, Lu Yuan bravely expresses herself and manages to obtain for them a period of time in which the two of them are happily together. But with the start of war, Li Yong sees potential in Lu Yuan and recruits her as a spy to go to Beilie. She says goodbye to Shen Buyan, and ends this first time leap.
In this first leap, I think two details that should be noted are:
Lu Yuan remembers every little thing that Shen Buyan tells her. Specifically, she remembers every little thing from their time together. After a pair of lovers separate and think about each other afterward, aside from looking at physical belongings (like the jade or the konghou), they're likely to spend more time remembering all their tiny interactions with each other. So every detail throughout this first leap is something that Lu Yuan can recall clearly. This is very important to remember for later, when we observe how she changes.
In the three years during which Lu Yuan searches for Shen Buyan, she makes use of the chancellor's connections and resources. In the drama, she says that after completing her mission, she continuously searched for him. During her search for him, she follows Li Yong to Jiangdu. As Li Yong's intelligence director, the information available must be incredibly thorough and it also covers intelligence about all nations. You can assume that she used that intelligence to look for him through an exchange that comes later:
Where have you been all these years? I searched for you for so long. They all said they could not find someone like you. They did not know of you.
We can largely assume that the results of her searches tell her that no such person as "Shen Buyan" ever existed. So in these three years, Lu Yuan must be suspecting whether or not "Shen Buyan" was a real person or who he actually was.
What must Lu Yuan feel as she searches for him? I think we can mainly interpret that at this point, Lu Yuan views him as her first love. If, in this kind of relationship, Shen Buyan never turns up again, we can presume that Lu Yuan would house it away in her heart forever as her first love before moving on to live the rest of her life.
This can be deduced because when Lu Yuan is 18, the difference between this time and her later years is that she doesn't know that Shen Buyan will come back. Plainly, there are no such promises between them. The only thing that exists is the period of time that they spend together. She asks Shen Buyan to wait for her, but when she comes back, she finds that Shen Buyan didn't wait. She wouldn't think that Shen Buyan "disappeared," she would think that he "left." He left without promising to return.
Then, in the following three years, he doesn't contact her at all. So mainly, Lu Yuan would think, He left. Has he forgotten me?
Based on this, you can guess why in her older years, she recalls meeting him again at 21 like this:
Three years later—on the day of the Shangsi Festival—when I thought that everything was simply a beautiful dream from my youth, he suddenly appeared before me once more.
When we think about her in those three years, she must be missing Shen Buyan. But she also wonders whether Shen Buyan has forgotten all about her. If Shen Buyan hadn't returned, she would have preserved him in her memory forever, but she also would have started a new life.
--
Yuanqi Year 1: Lu Yuan, 21 years old
While it's fairly easy to understand Lu Yuan's perspective from when she's 18, it gets much more complicated in the second time leap. Let's first summarize how it goes:
Right when Shen Buyan arrives, he intends to kill Li Yong. After Lu Yuan stops him, the two of them enter into some disagreements. Ultimately, Shen Buyan gives up on his plans before going with Lu Yuan to their home in Nanmeng Lake. They spend some peaceful and happy times together, with Shen Buyan respecting her decisions.
Then he returns with her to persuade the young Emperor against his movements north, and they later witness Li Yong's betrayal and his role in incapacitating the Emperor. Throughout this time, Lu Yuan discovers instances in which Shen Buyan doesn't remember certain things that occurred in their relationship. Afterward, Lu Yuan decides to move to the palace. Shen Buyan fully intends on following her there.
The scene of the rainy night in which he disappears from the carriage is widely recognized as an intensely sad one, but I have a different perspective on it.
First, let's look at the overall progression of this second time leap. We know that Lu Yuan has discovered the existence of the reversed timelines. When she realizes that Shen Buyan doesn't remember the fruit tree or the jade, she'll then think about the words that Shen Buyan spoke in his sleep before and put everything together. That's when she realizes that they're trapped in reversed timelines.
I do think that she only understands it at surface-level and hasn't yet thought about it in more depth. Like how realization dawns on us as we watch the last episode, she more so only recognizes the foundation of things.
My second thought is based on the first. In the rainy scene of the carriage, why do we all find it to be a very sad scene? One part of it is that Shen Buyan promises to stay with her, but can't follow through. He suddenly disappears without explanation. The second point is that Lu Yuan doesn't know exactly what has become of Shen Buyan, even if she knows that he's disappeared. That she's in pain and turmoil, but she doesn't know how he feels.
We can guess that Lu Yuan overturns these doubts at a later point: when she's in the rain looking for him, she ultimately has to get up on her own and take the carriage herself to the palace. After this, five years pass.
In these five years, she knows much more than she did in the previous three. She knows for sure that Shen Buyan is from the future. She knows with certainty that he had no choice in disappearing. So over the next five years, she will eventually deduce that how they parted from one another when she was 21 was also how they met when she was 18.
She'll think, Why was it that back when I was 18, Shen Buyan was in such awful condition? It was like he had been through hell and back. He was completely frail and kept calling her name.
At 18, she couldn't understand why. But after five years, locked in the palace, after spending every night thinking about it, she will eventually figure it out: While I searched for him in the rain, he had not wanted to leave. And when he returned by the river, he was in the same condition that I had been in—no, even worse.
So the reasons for which we deem the rainy scene will be resolved as she thinks everything over. She will realize that he felt just as awful as she did in that moment, and that perhaps he searched for her even more desperately than she did for him. I think after realizing this, Lu Yuan smiled truly, from the bottom of her heart.
In actuality, the director also borrows 18-year-old Lu Yuan in their first meeting to tell Shen Buyan what 21-year-old Lu Yuan wants to say:
Look at the state you are in. I think that she definitely would not blame you!
My third thought is that over these five years and through her understanding of the reversed timelines, taking into account details from the two times that they met, she will be able to conclude that their very first meeting did not happen in this time leap. Since she didn't recognize Shen Buyan when she was 18, then when Shen Buyan first meets her in the future, he won't recognize her either. Thus, while their relationship is bound to begin at some point in between, it can't be when she's 21. That's because when they first reunite during this time leap, the two of them are clearly already in love with one another—even though Shen Buyan doesn't know about events from when she's 18, he still loves her already in this second time leap.
With this, you can tell why Lu Yuan will ultimately stick to this decision:
Shen Buyan. If there truly will be a next time, I would rather we not recognize one another.
It's easy to interpret this as her being hurt severely by his departure, but I think the deeper meaning is that when she puts together the puzzle of her meeting Shen Buyan at 18 and 21, this is a decision that will protect Shen Buyan. She's thinking about how to change his fate. Just as Shen Buyan once did to her when she was 18, she wants to leave him, pretend that she doesn't know him so they can avoid their entire relationship from beginning at all. She knows that as soon as it does, they'll end up hurting each other.
This drama is quite symmetrical. Shen Buyan leaving Lu Yuan to protect her and Lu Yuan's decision to do the same after five years' worth of consideration are parallel:
LY: Since you clearly do not wish to leave, why can you not stay? SBY: For efforts that will not lead to any results, what is the point in forcing them?
SBY: Lady Lu! What do I need to do for you to believe me? LY: Do not follow me. If you continue, I will no longer remain so polite.
Without me, she seems to be happier.
I am afraid the more that I care about him, the more I should not reunite with him.
So over these five years, she has concluded that Shen Buyan never forgot her, but instead he had no choice but to leave when she was 18 due to the reversed timelines. So every doubt she had over the last five and previous three years has been resolved.
When we think about those first three years, she waited for nothing since there was nothing promised. But in these five years, she has something to look forward to. Unlike before, she now knows for sure that she and Shen Buyan will meet again. But unlike the next leap where she knows that it will take 10 years for Shen Buyan to return, in these five years, she doesn't know how long it will take for him to come back. Shen Buyan doesn't tell her—not this time, nor when she was 18.
However, based on experience, she can guess that since their first and second meetings both took place during the Shangsi Festival, then the next time they meet will also be on the day of the Shangsi Festival. You can imagine that in these five years, during every Shangsi Festival, Lu Yuan is hoping to see him again. Maybe she walks on the street or goes to places they've been before to wait for him. But he doesn't appear until Yuanqi Year 5.
In these five years, Lu Yuan's thought process must be incredibly complicated. She has a lot of time to think about things like, How did we meet before? Why did you appear in my life? Why did we grow so attached to each other?"
At the same time, she's in a lot of pain, as she'll recall later at 26:
Each time, I harbored expectations. Yet they were shattered every time. But still, I held a little hope.
She knows very clearly that the two of them cannot be together and that they're destined to come to an end, but she can't help it. She can't control her feelings. Or, she has no way of leaving her feelings behind.
I think that these five years are much harder for Lu Yuan to endure than the previous three. Whereas in those first three years she viewed Shen Buyan as a typical romance partner, within these five years, the most painful part is having to part ways.
When two people begin growing closer, being together is part of it, but leaving one another might be the bigger part. So when they've already experienced parting from one another, the experience of a happy reunion will brand this love of theirs into Lu Yuan's life. She'll feel more and more that fate is toying with them, that it's ensuring that the two of them will never be together. That sense of fate will push her to miss him even more intensely and await their next meeting with even more anticipation.
But alongside this expectation, she may return to Nanmeng Lake and see the wish Shen Buyan made to change her fate. At this point she'll think, I want to change your fate too. Maybe I cannot change whether or not you return, but I can change whether or not you fall in love with me. By not letting you fall in love with me, by pretending to be a stranger, I can lessen your pain.
Now when you think about their interactions when she's 26 and pretends not to recognize him, you'll discover that it's actually a very sad arc.

Yuanqi Year 5: Lu Yuan, 26 years old
When Lu Yuan is 26, the progression of the plot is that by the time Shen Buyan arrives, Lu Yuan has already decided to ignore him. But as chance would have it, Shen Buyan saves the Emperor and follows them into the palace. Li Yong begins the battle at Huofeng Fort. Shen Buyan wants to go to battle with Lu Yuan to change Lu Shi's fate. They'll assume that they've successfully prevented Lu Shi from dying, and then they'll go to Nanmeng Lake. That is when they discover Lu Shi's fate hasn't changed at all, and Lu Yuan uses the Phoenix Tablet to take the position of Empress. Together, Lu Yuan and Shen Buyan confront the enemy outside of city walls—then Lu Yuan and Yi Hua are captured to the palace. The time leap ends when Shen Buyan takes the arrowhead from Yi Hua to assassinate Li Yong.
Let's take note of some details in this third time leap. First is that Shen Buyan makes a promise to stay. At this point, Lu Yuan doesn't say anything. Take note of her expression:
SBY: I've decided. No matter how difficult it is, I will stay here and face everything with you, together.
Based on what Lu Yuan is aware of at this point, she previously heard Shen Buyan say something similar during that rainy night in the carriage. Right after he did so, he immediately disappeared—this became a very painful memory.
But now that she's hearing it again, she doesn't say anything that would point that out. You can tell why based on something she says later:
SBY: Since I have told you so much, you should tell me too. In our past, what exactly did we go through? LY: I cannot tell you that. Otherwise, once you meet the me of the past, everything you do will be too purposeful. It will not reflect your true feelings.
Then, Shen Buyan tries to assassinate Li Yong and disappears again. We know that Lu Yuan will endure 10 years of waiting.
But in these 10 years, she has something to wait for. Shen Buyan very, very clearly tells her that they'll meet again on the day of the Shangsi Festival. And within these 10 years, she will put together the events of what has happened during this leap and the previous two.
First, she'll understand why when she was 21, Shen Buyan tried to kill Li Yong immediately after arriving in the timeline. That was because right before he disappeared when she was 26, he tried to assassinate Li Yong in Lu Yuan and Yi Hua's stead. Li Yong held them as prisoners, planned Lu Shi's death, and caused the Emperor to become mentally disabled, so the first thing Shen Buyan desperately needed to do back when Lu Yuan was 21 was kill Li Yong.
Lu Yuan will remember that at the time, she rebuked him for it. That was possibly their one and only argument, but now she understands why he acted as he did. And she'll think, How ridiculous of me, that I stopped him. That I did not believe him.
Even though while she was 21, she found out why Shen Buyan wanted to kill Li Yong when she witnessed what Li Yong did to the Emperor, she didn't yet know why killing Li Yong was the very first thing Shen Buyan wanted to do. Now she does.
The second thing of note is that through this leap, she now knows how they came to love each other—more accurately, how Shen Buyan fell in love with her. She knows that the next time they meet will be a time when Shen Buyan isn't in love with her. That's because when they first meet in this leap, Shen Buyan calls her "Your Majesty." At that point, their relationship was more so him reporting his knowledge to an Empress, so there was no love to speak of.
Lu Yuan learns that the reason Shen Buyan falls in love with her during this time leap is that while Shen Buyan intended on going to take Lu Shi's place in Liuli Valley, Lu Yuan ends up taking Shen Buyan's place. That is the start of his feelings for her.
During this time leap, there's an interesting parallel that can be drawn: Lu Yuan is doing to Shen Buyan what Shen Buyan did to her when she was 18; that is, trying to end things between them. But ultimately, neither of them succeed. What provides the parallel for their shared failure are two hug scenes:
1. 26-year-old Lu Yuan obviously loves Shen Buyan very deeply, but she pretends to be distant and pretends to not know him. She keeps this up until the incident in Liuli Valley, where they come to the conclusion that they can change fate.
2. Compare the above to when Lu Yuan was 18 and Shen Buyan very clearly loved her, but still pretended that there was nothing between them and tried to leave. It was only when Lu Yuan told him that even if she had only 10 days left to live, she would still want to be with the person she loved that they reconcile with another hug.
There's something additional here that will let us see the actors and directors' attention to detail. Throughout Lu Yuan's life from when she was 18 to when she's 26, there are a total of four hug scenes:
18-years-old: Shen Buyan is full of sorrow and wants to leave. Though he embraces her, Lu Yuan is still crying:
21-years-old: There are two hugs, during both of which Lu Yuan is happy, but still visibly concerned that Shen Buyan will leave again:
26-years-old: They embrace one another and Lu Yuan believes that they have changed fate, meaning that Shen Buyan can truly stay with her. This is the only hug in which Lu Yuan is completely happy:
Let's now take a look at Lu Yuan's life between the ages of 26 and 36. Before disappearing, Shen Buyan tells her to "keep living."
I think this line has a very deep meaning. In a short period of time, Lu Yuan has witnessed the deaths of her little brother and her lover. They both die in her arms.
LY: I have already lost Lu Shi. I cannot lose you too.
For the sake of the country, she marries someone she doesn't love, yet she still becomes the hateful "Demon Empress" in everyone's eyes. If it weren't for Shen Buyan's words and his 10-year promise, if it weren't for Shen Buyan telling her to keep living, if it weren't for the thought that Shen Buyan's sacrifice won her the opportunity to end the war...it's greatly possible that Lu Yuan couldn't have lived on.
We can also feel exactly how difficult it is for Lu Yuan in these ten years. Even though she has no longer has the military support of her brother, she slowly grows while tolerating it all. She gradually forces Li Yong from a position of great power to fleeing to Beilie with the city defense map. In these ten years, she also puts her soul into raising and teaching Chu Tongchang. She must pass down all the knowledge she gained from Shen Buyan to Chu Tongchang—after all, this child is the direction and hope that Shen Buyan brought to her in this latest time leap.
In these ten years, she also walks without hesitation toward her destiny. She now understands everything about the story of her and Shen Buyan. When she thinks about all their short encounters, she will remember that even though Shen Buyan does not have memories of the times they spent together, he still has feelings for her while respecting her decisions. From the very beginning, he has been someone who will sacrifice himself to protect her—even when he didn't have feelings for her.
To Lu Yuan, someone who maintains such a pure heart at every moment and who is constantly trying to change her fate will inevitably move her over and over again. All of these beautiful yet painful memories support her lonely self and become her motivation to keep moving forward in the palace.
So although these ten years are long, Lu Yuan waits and prepares amidst her sorrow for the Shangsi Festival that she and Shen Buyan promised to each other.
Knowing that he would arrive in ten years gave me endless hope in those long days.
--
Yuanqi Year 15: Lu Yuan, 36 years old
36-year-old Lu Yuan meets Shen Buyan, who views her as a stranger. For answers to three of his questions, she exchanges three favors: changing his clothes, having a meal, and roaming about the festival. After a brief reunion, Lu Yuan uses the information that Shen Buyan gave her ten years prior to corner Li Yong. She blocks an arrow for Shen Buyan and ends this time leap. Out of all the time leaps, this is the shortest one, but the amount of emotion in it is the deepest and most enduring.
Let's look at these three favors. When we watch the show, we think that these are things Lu Yuan is completing based on what she always wanted to do with Shen Buyan during the Shangsi Festival. Of course, this is the first level of meaning.
We know that within the last ten years, based on the information that Shen Buyan provided her when she was 26 and his attitude toward her, she will conclude that this next meeting of theirs will be very short. Then she'll think back to the time when she didn't recognize Shen Buyan and how he treated her back then.
Lu Yuan knows that she won't have the same amount of time as he did. When Shen Buyan met her for the last time, he left behind knowledge, the konghou, and the jade. Through these, he gave her things to reminisce over during her future days of sorrow. So, she also wants to leave something for Shen Buyan.
She thinks about how in the days that she spent getting older, the one thing she kept wondering was whether Shen Buyan still loved her. Hence, she wants to find some way to tell the future Shen Buyan that in these ten years, she was constantly thinking about him.
Of course, an overly direct confession to someone who doesn't know you will only scare them. She must think of alternatives. I believe that in the three favors, aside from fulfilling her own wishes, they also contain all the things that Lu Yuan wants to tell Shen Buyan.
1. Changing clothes: These clothes are ones that Lu Yuan made for Shen Buyan when she was 18, but she was never able to give them to him. When she was 21 and they went back to Nanmeng Lake, the director took care to give a close-up of Lu Yuan packing up these same clothes.
Top: 18-year-old Lu Yuan sewing the clothes - Bottom: 21-year-old Lu Yuan packing them up
She brought them to Nanmeng Lake, so why is it that she still didn't manage to give them to him? When we think of the possibilities, we have to consider that making clothes by hand in ancient times was typically done with the intention of giving them to lovers or husbands. You can think of this as a method that women could use to more directly confess to someone within a conservative society. Lu Yuan has also always been someone to whom such rituals are important, as displayed by this scene from when she was 18:
LY: I finally have the opportunity to tell you. You still owe me one last lesson. I hope that after that lesson is complete, we can find a place with just the two of us so I can tell you.
When she was 21, even though they were together, Lu Yuan was preoccupied with how to convince the Emperor against war. Not to mention, she also thought that Shen Buyan wouldn't be leaving again. What she wanted was to give him the clothes properly, after they managed to persuade the Emperor. But we all know what happened.
I don't think that the gifting of clothes is a simple gesture. In the Classic of Poetry that she and Shen Buyan use as a code book, there's a poem called "Zhengfeng Ziyi." It talks about the feelings of a wife as she makes clothes for her husband, representing the way that women in ancient times expressed love. By finally giving Shen Buyan these clothes, Lu Yuan believes that later—when Shen Buyan will go over the Classic of Poetry with her 18-year-old self—he will then understand the silent confession of her 36-year-old self.
And when we look at her pained expression in this scene, we can imagine that from the moment she finished the clothes, she has pictured personally giving them to Shen Buyan and seeing him wear them an infinite amount of times.
SBY: How did she know my height and measurements?
2. Having a meal: We know that Lu Yuan made the food, but what I want to focus on is how the act of having a meal represents Lu Yuan's attachment to Nanmeng Lake.
Nanmeng Lake was a part of every prior story of theirs. The beginning of their story took place at Nanmeng Lake. She also requests to Chu Tongchang that she be buried there. So she really hoped that she and Shen Buyan could go back there together.
But she knows that their reunion will be very short, and she also has to remain in Jiangdu to counter Li Yong. Knowing that they can't go back, she could instead make food from Nanmeng Lake.
In the past, it was always Shen Buyan and Yi Hua who would grill fish for her. I think that over the last ten years, Lu Yuan practiced cooking this meal repeatedly. Because she knows that once Shen Buyan goes to the past, he will understand what she wanted to tell him through this meal: "Although I am in the palace, my favorite food is still that simple food from Nanmeng Lake. Although I gave up our love over and over again for the sake of my country, all I really want from the bottom of my heart is to go home with you. I wanted to do as you asked when I was 21, and settle down with you at Nanmeng Lake."
SBY: Are you willing to leave Jinghua House and Jingdu to settle down at Nanmeng Lake and stay with one another?
3. Roaming the Shangsi Festival: 21-year-old Lu Yuan's dream was to spend Shangsi Festival on the streets with Shen Buyan. 36-year-old Lu Yuan takes a willow branch to drive calamities away from Shen Buyan.
In this scene, Lu Yuan hasn't actually told him everything about this tradition. To complete her explanation, the director and writers borrow the voice of an old town crier in every successive time leap:
I wish that all of Dasheng's people may drive away calamity from themselves, and welcome the return of their beloved!
Yes, Lu Yuan only tells Shen Buyan half of the tradition. What she leaves out is also the answer to his last question:
LY: My regret is not being able to spend the Shangsi Festival with someone. SBY: Who? LY: Is that your third question? You will find out next time.
The answer is: "May you avoid calamities. I have welcomed the return of my beloved."
I think these favors form the best method that Lu Yuan can come up with that both wouldn't disturb Shen Buyan and also express all of the longing and love she has felt in these ten years.
With this, the time leaps forming the main story are effectively over. To Lu Yuan, these four encounters with Shen Buyan encapsulate all the love in her life. Each encounter was shorter than the last, and each time she had to wait longer. I think she doesn't regret meeting Shen Buyan, but she grieves that she keeps waiting longer and longer and loves him deeper and deeper, yet their periods of reunion are shorter and shorter. She laments that they never went back to Nanmeng Lake and that they couldn't say a proper farewell.
--
The remainder of Lu Yuan's life
The first shot after the time leaps is of Yuanqi Year 20, where Lu Yuan is hanging another wish tablet, on which she has wished to meet Shen Buyan one more time. The second shot is of 56-year-old Lu Yuan sitting atop the city gate, where she sees Shen Buyan in the last moment of her life before she jumps down.
A few details: in the scene where Lu Yuan is hanging the wish tablet, take note that like Yi Hua, she is in mourning clothes. Aside from the death of Lu Shi that occurred when she was 26, I think that when she was 36, she also started mourning for Shen Buyan. Because in her heart, Shen Buyan was her lover and husband.
Important to note is that at this time, we're still tracking the years by the Yuanqi calendar. "Yuanqi Year 20" means that Emperor Yuanqi hasn't died yet. In a time when the Emperor isn't dead, the Empress dressing in mourning clothes must have caused her to be on the receiving end of much negative sentiment.
The second detail is that Lu Yuan believes that fate has changed since she didn't die that night in the palace. In actuality, her fate hasn't changed at all. It's just that when Shen Buyan left, he didn't know that her death was fake, so from his understanding, he always thought that she died after being struck by the arrow. Maybe Lu Yuan considered that, but in all her years of waiting, she needed a reason to keep going.
The third detail is that after the time leap from when she was 36, she has waited for Shen Buyan for 20 years. Her biggest question in these 20 years must have been, "Does Shen Buyan still think of me?" She kept missing him, but she knows that it's probably only been a few months to Shen Buyan. Compared to the separation that death brings, the more distant separation comes with time. She doesn't know whether or not Shen Buyan will forget her in the time to come, or if he'll still miss her.
I tend to think that Lu Yuan never arrives at the answer to this question as she approaches the end of her life. A lot of people think that 56-year-old Lu Yuan remembers that she met Shen Buyan when she was 6. I don't think that this is logical, especially since she doesn't address these memories directly in her narration of the special episode. So I believe that she struggles with this question until she dies.
The fourth detail is with the old woman who sold the jade to Shen Buyan. Her life's duty is to give the jade to someone called Shen Buyan and tell him to hang a wish tablet. Her request for him to do so is also quite insistent.
When some viewers discovered that this old woman isn't Lu Yuan, they felt a bit disappointed. But if you think about the context of this woman being a descendant of the Chu family, it makes the story even more impactful.
We all know that Lu Yuan doesn't have any descendants, but Yi Hua, who she considers family, also doesn't. Only her adopted child Chu Tongchang does. We can deduce that Lu Yuan spends the rest of her life thinking of Shen Buyan and must repeatedly tell Chu Tongchang that the jade and the wish tablet request must to be passed down to his descendants. And we can see that this will become the most important duty of the entire Chu family. Otherwise, how could her requests survive so many years until modern-day?
The fifth detail is regarding elderly Lu Yuan and the konghou with the snapped string. My personal take on this is that when elderly Lu Yuan saw Shen Buyan when he traveled for the very first time, "I miss you" was what she wanted to tell him. At this point in time, Shen Buyan doesn't know anything. But once he experiences everything and sees that konghou with a snapped string being excavated, he will understand that the ancient love song Lu Yuan played that day and her breaking a string upon seeing him will have been her saying "I miss you" before she jumped.
SBY: I do not understand either. How about you tell me? LY: I...miss you.
When Lu Yuan leaps down from the city gate, aside from it being an act to take responsibility for all the nation's anger, it can also be considered a form of liberation. I think that after witnessing the deaths of Lu Shi and Shen Buyan, she had already considered dying, but two things kept her going: one being that she had to raise and teach Chu Tongchang, another being that she had to wait for Shen Buyan.
But in 56-year-old Lu Yuan's life, Chu Tongchang is already an adult who can handle himself. She's waited for Shen Buyan for 20 years, and he hasn't shown up. She can let go now. Yet her sincerity proves fruitful, because in her last moments, she sees Shen Buyan again.
In that scene of the rainy carriage night when Lu Yuan was 21, she said the following to Shen Buyan:
You and I have different duties. With our different duties, we walk in different directions.
Lu Yuan's duty is to end a tumultuous period and raise an emperor who will unify the nine nations. Shen Buyan's duty is to track history and restore Lu Yuan's good name.
Lu Yuan of the past never cared about the burden of the mark "Demon Empress." Shen Buyan of the past never cared about the Sheng nation's fate. With that, they were destined to move in opposite directions. But as time passes and they near the end of their lives, they have both slowly changed their previous perspectives and eventually end up on the same page.
Lu Yuan was always protecting Shen Buyan. Physically, but more so emotionally. Apart from when she was 18 and 21 and didn't know the truth of their situation, she constantly restrained herself starting at 26. She did so toward the lover of hers for 5 years, 10 years, even if it meant each reunion could possibly be the end of any beginnings.
Shen Buyan was also always protecting Lu Yuan. With a very average physique, he stood up for her in the middle of danger and revolt. During war, he was willing to take her brother's place in facing death. In the palace, he attempted to assassinate Li Yong to protect Lu Yuan and Yi Hua, buying Lu Yuan 10 years' worth of time to repair the nation of Sheng.
Aside from protecting her, Shen Buyan also respected her choices. Once he learned of 18-year-old Lu Yuan's wishes to depart for Beilie—even though he knew this was the last time he would see her—he respected her choice and said nothing but his last farewell. I think this is the true meaning of Shen Buyan's name (T/N: "Buyan" literally means "without speaking").
LY: See you again! Wait for me! You have to wait for me! SBY: See you again!
Now that we're at the end of the story, I want to interpret her line of "I have grievances, but no regrets."
She doesn't regret meeting Shen Buyan. It's in her persistence in leaving behind something for Shen Buyan before she dies.
She doesn't regret showing courage. In each short encounter she had with Shen Buyan, as an ordinary woman during a conservative time period, she still bravely expressed her own feelings. She didn't let any meeting of theirs simply slip by.
She doesn't regret that she spent her life lamenting a lost love. In the last episode, they describe that Lu Yuan was buried in Nanmeng Lake. Buried alongside her were the konghou and the sheet music for a love song. She spent her whole life performing and interpreting this ancient love.
She also doesn't regret giving up family, love, and her own life for the sake of her country.
As for her grievances, I believe we already know what those are.
#an ancient love song#古相思曲#subs*#idk why i thought watching these videos would make me feel less sad#but here we are#not less sad#do y'all think that eventually there won't be a 30 image limit#that would help me greatly with these types of posts#TOO MANY GOOD SCREENSHOTS

Today I completed a Blades in the Dark campaign
Lessons learned:
Blades in the Dark isn't great for a short story-focused campaign
BitD works well for a single-session or a long campaign with the territory/growth rules it defines, less well for short campaigns
Even when I think I'm making a short campaign, it might last a year.
Full improvisation is fun, but if you don't take notes you'll goozle yourself.
"Your Theorycrafting about the nature of the plot is entirely correct" is a vicious Devil's Bargain
As is "I'm not going to tell you, but it gets you two dice"
Write a vague prophetic dream, and use the details later to make them pay attention when you need to.
You can build an entire year long arc on the stupid pun "the bad guy is called Carson. He wants to turn everyone into crabs"
"He wants the whole world in his claws, the shellfish bastard"
A shop full of monkeys-paw magical artifacts that you improvise on the fly is like catnip to players.
Keep a list of random threads you haven't looped back to. Don't bother to check them off, things can mean two things.
If in doubt, add more cultists.
If in doubt, venetian masks.
If in doubt, add an NPC's mirror-verse twin.
"Everyone gets nightmares about being shelled and covered in Mary-rose sauce."
Three handouts:
A Dream Of Seafood
(after a player has eaten of the sacred flesh, disguised as a prawn vol-au-vent)
The world is cold and wet, and you like it that way. The sandy floor below you, the stars above, as it has always been and will always be. In the distance you hear the song of the leviathans, cutting through the ocean water like bagpipes over a mountain hillside. The words mean nothing to you, their song as alien as yours would be to them.
You do not sing your song, sound isn't what you're made for. You are, you see, you feed, you eat.
You obey.
The sandy floor rises up below you in ribbons - you never even process the net that has caught you. Your life flashes before your eyes, hits this moment, and goes beyond into the future.
You see the world above the ocean briefly, before darkness. The smell of wood and others for a long time, and a long descent into clean water. The water scalds and burns, and the life life leaves you, without your presence going with it.
You haunt the flesh of yourself as your shell is peeled back from you. A bath of pink sauce and a bed of puff pastry. Music, and strange people.
A mouth, and darkness.
And despair.
A Dream Of Shellfishness
(The first character to atune to a sacred artifact)
Within your dream you awake. You are underwater, and this seems oppressive and terrifying until you realise that you're breathing the water without difficulty, and then it just seems oppressive and differently terrifying. You breathe in brine, it fills your lungs and then you breathe out again, and beyond your initial panic, a deeper worry sets in.
You are surrounded by stars, refracted by a perfectly clear sea. Above and below you, constellations unrecognised, twinkling gently in the pitch black night. A moving black patch above you can only be a leviathan, its gigantic form gliding through the pitch black sea like a bird of prey. Behind it, the keel of a hunting ship disrupts the surface with its infernal motorised screw engine spinning to try to keep up, but the monstrous creature swims away with no apparent concern. Around you is a barnacle encrusted cage, glowing runes engraved on a wooden frame that you somehow know cannot be broken, even by you.
That's no mean feat, you discover, as a sense of scale kicks in and your perspective shifts. You realise that you could hold that leviathan in the palm of your hand, should you be able to break the cage that surrounds you. You beat against the bars soundlessly, unheard and imperceptable.
A voice, a sound like the antithesis of music, and you see one of the glowing runes go dark on your prison.
Vengeance will be won.
The Crab God's Shanty
(To the tune of the work song from Les Mis)
We sit, we row. Fourty fathoms low. We sail, wind blow, Forty Fathoms Low.
We load cargo, Forty fathoms low, We lift, we stow, Forty fathoms low
The stars, they glow, Forty fathoms low, The tide will flow, Forty fathoms low.
The deep, plateau, Forty fathoms low We see, he know Forty fathoms low.
The undertow, Forty fathoms low, Will make us go, Forty fathoms low
He speaks, bestow, Forty fathoms low, We feed, he grows, Forty fathoms low.
Our life, forgo, Forty fathoms low, The world will know, Thirty fathoms low.
Give up, let go, Twenty fathoms low, He rise shadow, Now ten fathoms low.
He rises slow, Just five fathoms low, Yo ho, heave ho. Claws at your ship bow.

✮ateez reacting to you wanting them as your plus one ✮includes: hongjoong, seonghwa, yunho, yeosang, san, mingi, wooyoung, jongho, gn!reader ✮genre: fluff ✮warnings:N/A ✮word count:TBC ✮note: i'm very very nervous for this,,, this is something that came into my mind recently, in no small part thanks to my crush saying that she's been invited to parties/had a party, but yeh i felt like this idea would be a good one to start with :)
Seonghwa
I think Seonghwa would be very surprised by this request, especially if it's from out of nowhere. He's used to spending quiet nights by himself building up his lego sets in peace, so when you come to him with the idea of bringing him along with you to a large party, I feel like he might hesitate at first. However, he does agree to come with you, and it ends up being a party that neither of you forget, enjoying it all so much that you forget that Hwa even hesitated. You’re always seen with one another, laughing, smiling and joking around, and you can see how much Seonghwa is loving it. When he brings you back to your place later in the night/early in the morning, he thanks you for even considering taking him along and tells you that it was one of the best experiences he’s had. After a very very long hug he waves you goodbye, smiling to himself as he’s walking away.
Hongjoong
Hongjoong would be very chaotic i feel, always dragging you around to different parts of the party to try and get you to join in activities. he wants you to enjoy yourself as much as possible and will do what he can to get you laughing.
Yunho
Yunho is such a golden retriever boy oml, radiating good vibes as soon as he steps in to the room, lifting any sorrow.
Yeosang
Yeosang i feel would be the most shocked and he'd probably be shy throughout the night (if he agrees to join you), always giving out his small smiles to people that come to talk to the both of you. after a bit of time at the party is when his full personality comes through, being amused by little things and generally enjoying himself. he'll stay as close as possible to you but if you are doing something he'll look at you fondly, asking how it was when you walk back to him.
San
San would absolutely eat up the chance of being able to go somewhere with you! he wouldn't hesitate to want to go and loves that you asked him. i feel like he'd be very good at making sure that nothing bad happens to you throughout the night and makes sure to check in on how you feel. of course he wants you to enjoy yourself first and foremost, you did invite him to come with you after all.
Mingi
Mingi i feel is the least likely to want to go (99% due to his anxiety:( ), however i feel like he'd make the most of it if he were to go. he wants to make the most out of being out, especially if it's with you. he'll stick close, only really talking to others if you're there. he may need to walk out to take time to himself, you ofc go to check if he's ok and stay with him for as long as is needed.
Wooyoung
Youngie would adore this opportunity, he would jokingly say that he'll be the best baby girl he can be and by the end of the night actually act like one ,not like he already does w/o drinks. he's someone that would share funny stories of you and more than likely babble on about how great you are.
Jongho
Jongho is another one that would love this, but especially if he gets a chance to sing, be it karaoke or following along to a song, you'd probably have so many people asking if he's your partner and how he's so talented.
pls tell me how you think this went,, im not much of a writer and decided to try something out
im also aware that this isn't as detailed in some places, i just wanted a way to get some ideas out but couldn't really think for some :(

Creepy Cases of Casper High (Hunters, Dragons, and Damsels In Distress!)
Hello hello my cherished readers! Sorry its been so long since I shared my last case report. Just been busy with life and doing research in general to make sure I've got my facts straight. Anywho, to anyone who is just joining us now here's a bit of a refresher. Last time I shared a case with you guys we were discussing Casper High's very first major ghost sighting of a huge monster made of meat! Feel free to check out the full details of the case by following the link down below!
The official second sighting looks like it might have been more of a one off thing along with the third but I decided to include them anyway since I feel like all of them are important if we want to get a better picture of just how haunted this town is. It happened to Mikey in the library. He went to use one of the computer's in the school library to work on an assignment and ran into someone he didn't realize at the time was a ghost who turned around and attacked him! Luckily Mikey wasn't hurt, just gagged and hung upside-down by some kind of energy net that vanished into thin air a few seconds later.
According to Mikey once he calmed down enough to remember exactly what the ghost said to him, he referred to himself as Skulker. This might only be a code name though so I'll have to look into this further for another article.
Moving onto the third ghost sighting at Casper High this one is pretty incredible if you as me! Why? Because it was the first close up sighting of Danny Phantom himself and an honest to goodness dragon! A ghost dragon! That can only mean one thing folks, dragons are real is now confirmed! I mean think about it. How could there be a ghost of a dragon if there was never a living one at some point flying around?
But moving on...
Before I dive into our next story I'd like to preface this by saying most of these are based entirely on witness accounts that vary a lot in levels of detail which is totally understandable when you think about it. It's kinda hard to pay attention to the specifics when you're running for your life from a huge gout of green flames from the maw of a ghost dragon! Moving onto the case report itself the first reported sighting of this dragon was apparently at the Amity Park Mall in the Abyss clothing store.
There was a sale on the entire discontinued line of Fleecy-T blouses and somehow or another a customer wound up possessed and transformed in front of the very eyes of the acting manager on call at the time. Paulina said she sorta remembers being there that day too but was too excited about managing to guy the very last shirt they had left in her size to really pay attention to what happened when she left the store.
The second sighting of the same dragon was on campus that night at Casper High where it destroyed the girls bathroom (although this wasn't discovered until later the next day by the janitor cleaning up the mess left by the first dance of the school year) then flew off to the football field where our next two witnesses, Dash and Tiffanie, saw Danny Phantom rescuing Paulina. My guess is he saved Paulina from the dragon at some point when the bathroom was wrecked which would explain why she was out cold at the time. The dragon was then defeated by our local ghost hero and the rest as they say is history! I also wonder how they replaced that whole row of bleachers...?
To end things off, I found out there was another ghost sighting the same night by Tucker Foley and the DJ in charge of the school dance's music. Tucker didn't tell me much apart from that he was really taken aback when this ghost girl just floated up to him, insisting on enjoying the last dance with him. As for the DJ, he noticed them while getting ready to pack up his gear once the last song finished and noticed the girl Tucker was dancing with looked out of place in her get-up, aka a medieval styled gown not to mention her feet were literally gliding across the dance floor. Well, assuming they had been ever touching the ground to begin with!
Tucker tells me she was surprisingly mellow and sweet but at the time his nerves were a bit frazzled from trying to help his best friend Danny Fenton keep his parents from getting too talkative about certain happenings at school. The rest of their little waltz is a bit of blur though so Tucker couldn't tell me any more than that. As for why Danny's parents were chaperoning the dance I'll leave that to your imagination since I doubt it's a very fond memory for the poor guy.
But there you have it! I really wanted to make up for my long absence here's three Creepy Cases of Casper High all rolled up into one! And now that puts our total of ghost encounters so far at 4! First was the meat ghost, second was this ghost hunter guy Skulker, third was the dragon, and fourth was this mysterious ghost girl who according to Tucker's description of her might have been nobility or maybe even a princess! Not only that but she bears a striking similarity to the ghost dragon as far as their color aesthetic so could the two of them be connected somehow? Looks like that is yet another case for me to take a closer look into for a future post!

Ooh are there any songs written close to my shows? My SN was Oct 30 2011 and Red was September 14 2013
For the SN tour, I would guess it’s Ronan— on Oct 18, she invited Ronan’s mom Maya to her show, and Maya gave her this long detailed letter about their story. Taylor had been reading her blog for a year and a half at that point though, and she didn’t actually tell Maya that she had written a song about Ronan until September 2012, so it’s possible it was written significantly earlier or later. That being said, I think it’s October, because she mentions having just written two songs in the October 2011 lover diary. If you want something a little more definitive, though, she wrote Safe and Sound on November 19, 2011– the Civil Wars posted about it on instagram, it’s in my red timeline
the red tour date is super exciting because YOU SAW HER THE DAY SHE WROTE OUT OF THE WOODS (probably)
Jack Antonoff said he wrote the track after one of his shows was cancelled, and then Taylor said she got it while she was on a plane and immediately came up with the first verse and chorus. On September 14, Fun cancelled their show. Taylor was likely either flying to or from your show!
Jack: "When I did the track for Out of the Woods, which is a Taylor song that I'm really proud of, there was some issue at a venue and our show was canceled that night and I didn't have my stuff, I had left it on the bus, so I only had these old samples on what was on my laptop, and caught up that 'oh oh'' thing, and I only had one drum kit on there, and these dumb little things [sometimes turn into a great song]"
Jack: "So 'Out Of The Woods' was the third thing we worked on together, and probably the easiest. I sent her the track for it, and she sent back a voice note with the verse and chorus in what felt like five seconds. And it was just perfect. It's eerie how similar it is to what the final product is."
Taylor: "This is a track that Jack Antonoff sent me, and I was actually on a plane, I got it and I got on a plane and I'm listening to it, and I'm just like listening to it and mumbling melodies cause the song came to me immediately like, in full [...] I think what I should start by playing you, is when I got the track, what I sent him like an hour later, and it is, me.. um, me singing what came to me, which ended up being the finished version of the song, or at least really close to it."

How I think the Moon Boys would react to meeting Other Heroes
I want to eventually turn these into fanfics relaying the events in detail (and if you want to as well, please do and tag me in it, I'd love to see what you make!) but for now we just do meta :] I'm gonna do the OG 6 avengers first, but I'll likely reblog later with other heroes if people seem interested, so lemme know if you wanna see more!
Tony Stark
Marc: Definitely assumes this guy is an asshole before ever meeting him. He's a billionaire, he's cocky, he built a giant tower with his name on it--he's got all the makings of a real asshole. Upon meeting him? Well, yeah, he has to admit the guy is smart and fights well. They can work as a team when in battle for sure. Still cannot stand his personality though, and it's in part because Marc can see some parts of himself in Tony. He really doesn't like the idea that he might relate to guy who used to be fine with building weapons for awful people.
Steven: Definitely hesitant about him, in part because Marc is so adamant about his assumptions. However upon meeting him, I think Steven could grow to like him in some ways. Sure he's cocky, and has a hard exterior, but it's not like he doesn't know how to deal with that, sharing a body with Marc and Jake. He likes to hear Tony explain science and machines to him, and I could see them talking about their weapons and armor, exchanging ideas. He too is fine to fight alongside Iron Man
Jake: He's also hesitant about Stark, both because of Marc and because of his role as the protector, but he can't help but admit... the guy has fuckin style. He particularly likes Tony's cars, and when he sees magazines in the store detailing all of Tony's cars, he can't help but snag one. And when he MEETS Tony? Well it takes help from Steven outright telling Tony that he'd love to see them, but Tony does show Jake his garage full of cars, and they chat about it for so long that Marc and Steven have to practically drag the body back home before midnight. Fighting enemies with him is an entire different playing field however. Jake really hates being told what to do, so generally he'll let Marc or Steven handle battles alongside Iron Man
Steve Rogers
Marc: Mixed feelings about Cap before meeting him for sure. He was a soldier like Marc was, and for that Marc feels a sense of loyalty or comradery with him. Cap also fought in WWII and helped save a lot of Jewish people, which obviously puts him in a good light. But at the same time, he's named Captain America, the same nation that spit him out of the marines with no support, no option but to become a mercenary to survive. After meeting him though, he finds that he quite likes Cap. They bond over their pasts as soldiers, and exchange stories of punching fascists right in the kisser. He considers it quite an honor to fight alongside Cap in any battles
Steven: He liked Cap from the very beginning, since he was a kid. Not obsessed, he never collected cards like Coulson, but he always regarded him as a hero for what he did in WWII. He's never liked to be called Steve, always the full name Steven, but it still made him just a little bit proud to share the same name as Captain America. After meeting Cap, he found he appreciated him as a person as well, not just as a hero. He enjoyed hearing Cap's stories about what life was like in his time, and they exchanged song recommendations together often. He too finds it an honor to fight alongside Cap
Jake: Jake didn't think much about Cap before meeting him. Sure, he was glad for what he did in WWII, saving Jewish people and punching Hitler, but he kind of thought that should've been the standard anyways. He didn't feel the need to praise the guy just for standing up for Jewish people, if anything he preferred to praise the Jewish doctor that MADE the super soldier serum, he was the one that gave them this great hero after all. After meeting Cap he did find he warmed up to him though. He was a good man, even if a bit robotic at times. Again though, he cannot stand people telling him what to do, especially in the commanding, soldier-like way Cap does it. At least Tony makes a funny comment when he tells people what to do, Cap just orders you, and Jake does NOT like that
Thor Odinson
Marc: VERY hesitant about this guy, as past experience with gods has not exactly gone well for him. Upon meeting him he realizes quickly that Thor isn't much of a threat (to him at least), and he gets less cagey. He doesn't exactly become friends with Thor, but they're nice enough to each other, and can fight as a team well. Secretly tho? He thinks Thor's whole lightning and thunder thing is pretty cool
Steven: Also again hesitant due to Thor's whole God-ness, but also realizes he wouldn't harm them. He is INTENSELY interested in Asgardian/Norse mythology though, and spends several evenings asking Thor a million questions about the different realms, the culture of Asgard and all the magic that exists there. Thor promises to one day show him the Bifrost and Asgardian palace library, as well as introduce him to Heimdall, who could tell Steven more about the realms than Thor ever could
Jake: AGAIN, not exactly excited about meeting another God, and even after meeting him, Jake is still unsure for a long time. He's always quick to remind Steven that Thor is a god and things could go bad with him at any time. With time he learns to trust Thor, and have a tentative relationship with him, at least enough that he's willing to fight alongside the god in battle
Clint Barton
Marc: He'd heard of someone called Hawkeye fighting in the Battle of New York, and mostly thought he must've been insane (or stupid) for fighting aliens with a bow and arrow. However after meeting him he did find a new respect for him. I think of all the people to spar with, he'd often choose Hawkeye, both because they're similar in strength (without the suit at least), and because Clint has a similar fighting style to him. They both utilize rooftops, darts/arrows/grappling hooks, and hand-to-hand combat, so he's a great person to practice with. They work well in battle together.
Steven: He was impressed hearing about a guy fighting aliens with a bow and arrow for sure. After meeting him I think he does like Clint, but might feel intimidated by him. He doesn't seem to be the most open of people, and he can see why Marc enjoys his company because of that, but Steven himself just finds Clint a bit difficult to talk to. They work fine in battle, but not as well as Jake and Marc do.
Jake: I think of anyone in MK system Jake probably is the one that can talk to Clint the most easily. He's relaxed enough that he doesn't worry about Clint being cagey at times, and good enough at bantering and talking with people to get Clint to relax and open up more. If anyone is able to start a good friendship with Clint, it's Jake. This also makes it so they work well fighting together
Natasha Romanoff
Marc: Absolutely just cannot vibe with this woman, at least at first. He could tell immediately that she was analyzing him and trying to get information about himself and his past out of him when they first met, and it just threw him off instantly. Something about the spy, manipulation tactics stuff, and honestly her being a woman, just reminded him too much of his mom. Over time he would learn to be less nervous around her, especially as he realized her analytical first impression was part of a mask she put on, but he couldn't say he ever truly relaxed around her. He doesn't enjoy fighting alongside her much, but he's willing to do it
Steven: He honestly thought she was fine upon meeting her, and that Marc was freaking out over someone just being friendly to him. It's not that he didn't realize she was analyzing them, but more that he understood quickly that it was a mask. She reminded him of Marc and Jake really, and similar to them, it was just a matter of being open enough that the other person felt comfortable taking of their mask too. I think they'd get along pretty well honestly, almost a grumpy+sunshine dynamic similar to him and his alters. They don't fight very similarly though, so while they get along, there's a lot more communication happening between them to try and fight better together.
Jake: Would also tell immediately that she was trying to analyze them upon first meeting, and I think that might actually trigger him to front when they first meet. She also reminded him of their mother, and Jake would immediately start handing that same energy back to her. I could honestly see a scene where she's asking them questions, and Jake starts to front and responds to her questions with his own questions. However, I think this would result in a friendship to be honest haha! I think through analyzing each other they would figure out they're similar in a lot of ways, and Jake would end up trusting her a lot. He would know that she understood what it was to have secrets and to be constantly striving to be better than the person you were in the past, and he would understand her for the same reasons. I also think they would bond a bit over their protective natures, with how she's protective over Clint and Yelena, and how he protects Marc and Steven. Oh and they would 100000000% dance together. It's basically their version of sparring haha, and in battle in makes it so they barely have to talk in order to coordinate seamlessly together, which works perfectly for him because he doesn't have to be told what to do but he can still work well with her
Bruce Banner/The Hulk
Marc: He'd heard of the Hulk before, and wasn't really sure what to think of it. Some people said he was a good guy, some people said he was bad, overall Marc just kinda hoped he'd never be on his bad side. After meeting Bruce he found that he wasn't afraid of the Hulk at all when he transformed. Cautious of course, but not afraid. He liked Bruce, he kind of reminded him of Steven in his awkwardness and nerdy ramblings. He wasn't exactly close with either Bruce or the Hulk, but they gained a mutual trust
Steven: Steven was very interested in Bruce and the Hulk ever since he'd first heard about them, and at first thought it might've been a weird, magical, or mutated version of DID. Obviously he quickly found out that wasn't the case at all, but he was still very interested in the duality of Bruce and The Other Guy and he ended up having long talks with Bruce about it when they met. I think if they'd met back then, Steven might've been able to help Bruce a lot when he was trying to figure out how to find a balance between himself and the hulk, help him figure out how to merge the best of both worlds. Steven's interactions with Hulk weren't as amicable in the beginning though, because Hulk viewed him mainly as "Banner's Friend", but Steven was still kind to him, so eventually The Hulk grew to like him too
Jake: Jake thought the Hulk was really cool honestly, but he could understand why Bruce didn't like it, because he understood the frustrating feeling of switching when you didn't want to, losing control when things got too emotional. However he didn't really voice how he related to Bruce until much further into their friendship. He still liked Bruce a lot though, for the same reason Marc did, he reminded him of Steven. He likely gets along with The Hulk a bit more though, because of he enthusiastically encouraging he is of the Hulk. He's considered the Hulk's friend, and he fights well alongside him. Overall I also think the Hulk likes the MK system because he understands that they switch similarly to how he and Bruce do, and may actually think about them working together so well when Bruce proposes the idea of them merging and working together better.
BONUS
Loki Laufeyson
(this one I actually already have a fanfic for, which is why there's a link, though it's set in a sort of AU where the Mind Stone hypnotized Loki and made him more violent and evil than he actually is. Here I'll talk about a more canon-ish reaction)
Marc: Obviously, none of the MK boys are gonna like this guy initially. The man sent an alien army to earth, he's not made a good first impression. Getting to know him over time is where things begin to change. When Marc starts to figure out that his swagger and menacing personality is more of a persona than how he actually is, he starts to kind of connect the dots and figure out that this guy may have been manipulated in some way, and may be going through things similar to what Marc went through when he was a mercenary. However he doesn't dig much into it, because he really doesn't love the idea that he might relate to a guy who tried to take over the entire earth (similar to how he doesn't want to relate to Tony either).
Steven: Steven would again, not be a fan of Loki, but unlike the other two, he would be the one actively looking for any sort of redeeming quality in him. Steven would be the one to find out about Loki's father, and how poorly he was treated, and would be able to communicate that to Jake and Marc. He would be the gentlest with Loki, and would likely be able to see through Loki's mask much easier than Marc or Jake would. Whether this would result in a friendship is harder to say though. He would be happy to talk to Loki about his problems, but I can't see him easily finding something to connect with him about. Maybe through magic, and Loki talking about spells and things he knows, similar to how Steven bonds with Thor.
Jake: Again, not a fan at first, but that changes over time. Unlike Marc, Jake would likely trust Steven's ideas about Loki, and how he may not be as horrible as he seems, or at least, he may have been manipulated into being what he is now. Jake I think would be able to talk to Loki and create a stronger friendship with him than the other two, being the people person he is. He wouldn't be able to easily talk about the trauma-related stuff, that's more Steven's expertise, but he would be able to see what Steven does eventually, and realize Loki isn't so different. He'd be able to analyze him similarly to how he did with Natasha, and while he won't talk to Loki about what he realizes, his opinions will still change, and he'll see him in a different light.
If you made it this far, thank you for reading! Lemme know if you want to hear about the MK boys (or Layla???) reacting to more heroes! Again, if you make anything based of of these ideas, definitely tag me, I wanna see what you made!!

The Fable (2024) Review
Warning: Full spoilers ahead
Director: Raam Reddy
Runtime: 119 minutes
Language(s): Hindi, English, and Pahari audio; English subtitles
Certification: PG (Singapore)
My invite to the screening of The Fable at the 35th Singapore International Film Festival. Director Raam Reddy and lead actor Manoj Bajpayee were in attendance.
“How much knowledge do you need to have to engage with something in a meaningful way?” I was reminded of this question posed by the video essay Reading Binging Benning (2018) while writing my review of The Fable (2024). The video essayists were commissioned by the International Film Festival Rotterdam to introduce a screening of James Benning’s Readers (2017)—but they had no access to the film. They had two stills, detailed information about the film, and access to some of Benning’s other works, but these don’t replace the film itself.
My situation with The Fable isn’t as drastic as these video essayists’, since I actually did watch it. There was even a pre-screening introduction from the director himself, who expressed an intention behind the film: he wanted the audience to undergo a “spiritual” experience.
I did not have this experience.
The Fable has elements that sound like the film could be spiritual. It is slow-paced. It features a group of ascetic people. They chant in unison. One of them meets with the protagonist’s daughter, Vanya (Hiral Sidhu), and they hum together, seeming to have a quasi-telepathic conversation. The protagonist’s wife, Nandini (Priyanka Bose), performs songs about spiritual concepts.
In my research for this review, I discovered that the first song Nandini sings is “Shivoham”, also known as “Nirvana Shatakam”. I frequently found the composition being attributed to the Hindu philosopher Adi Shankara. I didn’t manage to find out what the second composition is, but from what I remember, Nandini sings about a place of seemingly peaceful nothingness.
Maybe the film connects better with Hindu audiences, or at least, with those who are quite familiar with Hinduism, unlike me. However, I feel that it should still be able to resonate. I’m not that knowledgeable regarding Shintoism or Buddhism either, yet I was in awe at Princess Mononoke (1997). Earlier this year, I rewatched the Studio Ghibli film, intending to take mental notes at the same time. It wasn’t long before I forgot all about taking notes. Princess Mononoke entranced me. On the other hand, The Fable was generally boring.
No, a film being boring doesn’t necessarily make it bad. For example, I’d describe Forgotten Planets (2018) as “boring”. Something about it made me want to rewatch it, though, which I did less than a month later. (Granted, there was also the motivation that I had easy access to the film at the time, something which was likely to change in the future.) I think what I liked about Forgotten Planets was its calming mood. Even though neither of its two protagonists are content with the state of things, it’s still a very slice-of-life story without much tension.
The Fable, however, isn’t a pleasantly boring film. It maintains its tension for too long, and for too long at the same level of intensity. The tension mainly comes from the mystery of who is burning the protagonist’s orchards and why. This premise sounds dramatic, but the problem is that it rarely feels like anything is at stake for Dev (Manoj Bajpayee).

The programme guide of the 38th Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF) calls The Fable a “political allegory”.
I can see that the film touches on the themes of colonialism and class. At the beginning, a narrator from the future tells us that it was the British who gave the orchards to Dev’s family. The British gave them to his family as a reward. At the end, the narrator says that Dev and his family suddenly disappeared one day but not without a letter. In the letter, Dev declares his land returned to the villagers who originally owned it and that he gives the family residence to his former orchard manager, Mohan (Deepak Dobriyal), who we discover is the narrator.
Where did Dev and his family go? The filmmakes it quite obvious that they are the fairies in the…well, fable that the wife of an orchard worker tells her young son. “It’s about a family who looked just like us,” the woman says. “Even they thought they were like everyone else. But the truth was, they were special souls.” She goes on to say that these “special souls” are actually fairies who had come to earth and forgotten where they came from.
At the start of The Fable, Dev is shown to have a hobby of designing and building wings that let him fly around. At the end, we catch a glimpse of winged figures soaring through the clouds and a pair of his engineered wings attached to a stake in the woods, fully unfurled.
LIFF describes the film as not only a “political allegory” but an “incisive” one.
I can’t see the allegory.
What was the point of making Dev and his family fairies? Having the land returned to their original inhabitants seems to display an anti-colonialist sentiment, but this is undermined by implying that the “special souls” in this story are the characters who have ties to the colonisers.
As a Muslim, I connect to the idea that there is a better world beyond this earth. I believe that even if someone’s life appears to be full of hardship and pain, if they endure it patiently and correctly (i.e. according to God’s commands), then they will attain Paradise in the hereafter. Leaving this world would be liberating for them.
I didn’t feel any sense of liberation when Dev and his family leave earth. Of course, having your land mysteriously burn away before you would be terrifying for anybody. The fire even reaches the plants before the family’s doorstep. But when compared to the tribulations of their employees, those that Dev and his family experience don’t feel particularly heavy.
During the mysterious fires, the patwari (also known as a village accountant) continuously tries to impress wealthy landowner Dev by “assisting” in the investigation, including getting police officers to make arrests. After a huge fire on a mountainside, the patwari brings the police and tells them to make five arrests no matter what. So, without any sufficient evidence, the police arrest five orchard workers who risked their lives to put out the raging fire. Who will assist the villagers? Dev eventually stops the police from taking the arrestees away—but he appears to do this reluctantly. Later, he lays off all his staff.
After all that has happened, is it really a liberation for Dev and his family to fly away to their fairy home?
What’s the allegory?
In Reading Binging Benning, Kevin B. Lee talks about his experience watching his first Benning film, RR (2007). Lee says, “The whole time, my head is spinning, trying to figure out, ‘Is there something in front of me that I’m just not seeing?’ I was facing an image that wasn’t telling me how to read it.”
Maybe I don’t know enough about the history or cultures of India to appreciate the film. But how much do I need to know? How much knowledge is fair to assume the audience has? It sounds strange, but The Fable could probably do with more exposition.
Rating: 1.5/5
Thank you to SGIFF for the Cinephile Pass and for the invite to the Special Presentation of The Fable.

Wheel of Time full series spoiler thoughts on TSR 31-40
A probably semi-regular weekly bonus to my reread blog, since sometimes you realize things on reread that just make you need to yell in a full spoiler space.
"I am not so lost to custom yet as to bond a man against his will." YET.
In a strange way, I'm glad the show made Abell a shit dad, because him just being Tam Lite gets boring really quickly. Sets up Mat's arc better, too. Alas, a necessary character assassination, because RJ just… I'm gonna be kind about this one: he focused where he wanted to focus and didn't always think about the details he didn't want to think about. He let ta'veren and "idk the Pattern requires it" do more weightlifting than they really needed to.
Verin sees the hammer and then they raise the wolf banner, make no wonder she puts together the signs and asks him when he'll put aside the axe later. Tricksy double agent, you, I SEE YOU! <3<3
Laila, oh Laila. In another turning you are one of the most complicated story changes for all of us to have to deal with.
Luc-Isam-Slayer, properly on the scene. He's afraid of Perrin already, though? Probably not used to people his size who know how to navigate TAR, even though we know Perrin doesn't really know much yet. He'll fear him more before the end.
My eternal annoyance that Rand never got to speak to Galad after this on the page, honestly. Never got to tell him that he has a brother. Never got to tell him Tigraine regretted leaving, but had to save her people and the world. I like to think Galad would have liked to hear that even if it shattered some of his morality complex.
Asmo's fascination with Rhuidean and what might be found there is interesting in itself, too. Sliding past the mention of Avendesora because he knows from the AOL that there was no single tree of life, of course, they're just chora trees. And then showing up poking at the edges in TAR… Oh, Asmo.
I have to wonder how he picked up the songs of the post-Breaking era, though. Has he been in some city catching up on pop culture instead of ambitiously conquering or whatever?
I had totally forgotten that RJ test-ran the fucking list with Perrin first. That does take some of the wind out of the sails of Rand's list being so misogynist, not a lot, but credit where it's due.

When you take into account the conceit of Midnights being things that have kept her up at night, Vigilante Shitis so fucking funny, because who among us has not seethed and festered over someone who’s done us wrong and concocted elaborate revenge scenarios in our minds to vent our anger??
It’s such a hilarious and ingenious way of illustrating the anger she felt towards 🛴 by crafting it as this Cell Block Tango-esque takedown full of espionage, spilled secrets and comeuppance. Do I think Taylor actually dreamed up a scenario in which she had him tailed and submitted proof of his cheating to his wife and spilled his secrets to the FBI? Probably not although you never know with her lol. But the story is SO rich when you think about it, and all the scenarios she sings about detail different parts of her anger and the things she wish she could have done in the real world.
You did some bad things, but I'm the worst of them Sometimes I wonder which one will be your last lie They say looks can kill and I might try -> Telling on him for the lies he spread about her (not just about the masters, but his likely involvement in the kimye shit)
I don't start it but I can tell you how it ends Don't get sad, get even So on the weekends I don't dress for friends Lately I've been dressing for revenge -> she didn’t start this war (eg snakegate, the fight over the masters) but she’s got the last word with her “name” being cleared years later and her rerecordings’ unprecedented success. Instead of wallowing in her grief over losing her work and her name at one point, she recalibrated and forged a path through the pain and worked night and day to reclaim her life.
Ladies always rise above Ladies know what people want Someone sweet and kind and fun The lady simply had enough -> she was sick of living up to everyone else’s standards for her and she upended her entire world to survive this mess. She was mad as hell and she wasn’t going to take it anymore.
It’s contrasted so chillingly with the imaginary (?) revenge fantasy, about selling him out to his ex wife and the FBI and the world for his white collar crimes (and drug use lol). Unfortunately it seems like that part didn’t come to pass irl lol, but the imagery of her telling on him to his wife and the cops and the world as payback for what he did to her is a stand-in for what really happened: his deceit was exposed, she was proven right re: the phone call and vindicated for her claims years before, he lost part of his power and status and reputation (and money with the resale of the masters), which probably cost him his marriage, while her career skyrocketed into the stratosphere even more furiously than had she not lost her masters he bought from right under her.
The song is saucy and campy and fun, but it does a really good job of crafting an allegory for the rage she felt about the situation and the payback she so desperately yearned for in the aftermath. And that is definitely something that would cause many a sleepless night indeed.
