Trumped By Justice, Part 1: ALRIGHT MR. DEMILLE, I'M READY FOR MY PERP WALK! – by the Canuck Crank & the Lone Antifa – updated & expanded Aug 9, 2023
MERRY ARRESTMAS, y'all! Reality TV show CELEBRITY APPREHENDED recently had its world premiere on all the best American networks. The day's entertainment began with the spectacle of PRECEDENT TRUMPERY's motorcade arriving at a NY courthouse, besieged by salivating media.
But rather than being greeted as a conquering hero in his hometown, the DEAR MISLEADER's hopes were quickly dashed by the notable absence of any furious supporters armed to the teeth. The high point came when the chastened MARTYR IN CHIEF had to restrain himself while the judge arrainged on his parade, and told him to watch the language coming out of his big orange piehole.
Clearly, this new series promises to be the most exciting phenomenon in pop culture history – and SILLY WABBITS such as ourselves are naturally delighted to shamelessly jump on the GLOATING BANDWAGON with the best available festive music, jovial comedy, and brutal cheap shots. So why are we being such CRUEL HOBBITS about this poor delusional man's heartrending dilemma?
You might well arsk, and we fearlessly answer. We are merely humble INK-STAINED WRETCHES, who have been toiling away on posts of this sort for the past decade – often showcasing high quality music videos, cartoons, memes, and commentaries from many different sources, in our quest for meaning, purpose, and free danish pastries.
We began this quixotic enterprise by expressing our oppostion to the worst excesses of the treacherous TEAPUBLICANS, and their CHRISTOFASCIST Religious Right enablers; and from 2016 onward, we broadened our efforts to focus primarily on mob boss wannabe DON VETO TRUMPLEONE, and his deranged MAGACULT.
After weathering many a moral and philosophical storm, we have decided that it is high time we cut back on our commentaries about the ORANGE IMPOTUS. From this point onward, our TRUMPED BY JUSTICE series will consist solely of posts focusing on the DRAMA QUEEN IN CHIEF being actually held legally accountable for his actions.
When (not if) he is locked safely away – preferably in the  maximum security psych ward of DA BIG HOUSE – we will likely celebrate with one last epic post. When he is finally given the comeuppance he deserves, for his most heinous COVFEFELONIES, we will be sorely tempted to DO THE DON JUSTICE by paying his astonishing career due homage – with videos, image galleries, the best available journalism, media editorials, and our own unbridled rant.
If y'all are curious to know what we have learned from all this turmoil, aggravation, despair, and hope, it is best summed up in the videos embedded above – spotlighting ALEC BALDWIN, STORMY DANIELS, STEPHEN COLBERT, RANDY RAINBOW, JOHN DI DOMENICO, and THE INSECT TRUST. The latter item is especially meaningful for us.
It is the Deluxe Redux Extended Remastered Restored Remixed Ultra High Def Director's Cut Special Edition of our INSECT TRUMP music video – which is much nastier and more comprehensive than the shorter version we released in 2021. Taken together, these decidedly different videos are MFF’s double-barrelled personal parting shot aimed directly at DOUBLE AGENT ORANGE. The Redux Edition combines well over 100 harshly truthful cartoons and memes.
The video's music consists of our remix of two compositions written and performed by an innovative but obscure American jazz-rock group. The Insect Trust released two truly classic albums, then disbanded in the early 1970s. One of the songs is an ironic antiwar statement entitled WORLD WAR I SONG; the other is DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, an early feminist polemic that utilizes political language to bid farewell to a toxic relationship.
To hear all of this fabulous band's available recordings, as well as the gratuitously vicious original version of our own video, be sure to check out the links in THE TRUSTED INSECT section below.
We also present a playlist featuring many more wascally Wandy Wainbow parodies, as well as music from U2; PINK FLOYD; BOB DYLAN; the MAN IN BLACK; PUBLIC ENEMY; TALKING HEADS; PUSSY RIOT, BETTE MIDLER; STEVE POLTZ; MATT MONRO; ROGER WATERS; MAESTRO ZIIKOS; FOUNDERS SING; MATTIE & JORDAN KATTENHORN; ROY ZIMMERMAN; SANDY & RICHARD RICCARDI; DIYorDIE; the ANGRY AMERICAN; and NAPOLEON XIV.
In addition, you'll find lots more classic Colbert; and downright jolly satirical commentary from SNL, JIMMY KIMMEL, JOHN OLIVER, SETH MEYERS, SAMANTHA BEE, TREVOR NOAH, JIMMY FALLON, BILL MAHER, JON STEWART, CHRISTOPHER WALKEN, ANDY GRIFFITH, LIBERAL REDNECK, AL FRANKEN, JORDAN KLEPPER, RUSSELL HOWARD, THE DAILY SHOW, JAMES CORDEN, ROY WOOD JR, JAMES AUSTIN JOHNSON, THE LINCOLN PROJECT, BAD LIP READING, FRANCIS MAXWELL, J-L CAUVIN, TOONING OUT THE NEWS, and BELLINGCAT PRODUCTIONS.
After all these rib-tickling shenanigans, you'll find links to the very best of MFF's previous posts about Yankee politics – with special emphasis on the MANCHURIAN CANTALOUPE, the MAGAGOP PLAGUE, and the RELIGIOUS WRONG. But first, we invite you to check out a simply scintilating excerpt from the DARK LORD TRUMPELTHINSKIN's recent FAUX NOISE interview. After promoting his plan for flogging NFTs of his perp walk, he offered SHAM VANNITY a first edition of his gold plated covfefe mug – complete with autographed mug shot – created especially for CPAC. Then he shared the following excerpt from his 2024 acceptance speech:
“My tremendous indictability makes God sooooooo jealous, my close personal friend Pope Francis calls me his favorite indictmentite whenever I declassify top secret files with my bigly yuuuuuuuge brain, Roy Cohn's ghost says my indictmentitude very strongly stopped windmill cancer after I flushed 15 times, I am quite frankly Nambia’s indictmentalist champion, my poorly educated loyal base of insurrecting 2nd Amendment magamorons considers my perfect phone calls the epitome of smocking hot indictishness, Lindsey Carlson says I've done more for indictianity than anyone in the history of covfefe beans, all the best people are saying President Vladimir Trump’s indictmentosity record is simply unparalleled, and it should be obvious by now that nobody but nobody does STABLE GENIUS LEVEL INDICTMENTIZING better than my bleach-injected forest-raking hurricane-nuking steal-stopping orange-tanned hamberdering self, everyone says so, believe me, am I right?”

Hi Cossette! I enjoy MUNA's discography (their self-titled release from 2022 is really good) :D I just quickly looked up some details on The Japanese House's upcoming album and there will be a MUNA collab!!
One of my favourite Phoebe Bridgers features happen to be Silk Chiffon from MUNA's self-titled album! I also enjoy her more acoustic collabs e.g. Nothing New, but Silk Chiffon is a pleasant surprise in that the song is more sonically polished and upbeat (though the lyrics are nevertheless very moving)
For Speak Now TV, I'm most excited about the vault tracks: the previously unreleased self-written songs that she wrote in 2009 ~ 2010. I don't have any specific songs on the top of my mind, but I'm certainly preparing to be surprised by her choices!
In addition to the vault tracks, I'm also looking forward to listening to Sparks Fly and Back To December with the much improved production & vocals in the re-recording! (and yes!! fingers crossed that she will expand more of Speak Now & the Debut in the later shows of Th Era Tour)
I just looked up about Gracie's upcoming deluxe version of Good Riddance and am looking forward to hearing the bonus tracks :D Listening to deluxe / expanded versions is fascinating that you get to appreciate a musician's creative process towards working on the main album e.g. the songs that almost made it to the standard tracklist and it's a joy to see these songs seeing the light of the day 💖
Gracie had mentioned about personal growth whilst working on Good Riddance, so the deluxe tracks will be a wonderful opportunity to listen to the additional songs that paved way towards her maturing artistry!
P.S. Speaking of album tracks, what are some of your all-time favourite deluxe / bonus album songs?
hello jennifer!!! i hope you're having a good thursday! i saw something about a MUNA collab, and saw something about bon iver also being on the album and i'm so so excited. i know justin has worked with the japanese house before on dionne, and i really like the way their voices blend together so i'm really excited for whichever track he ends up on — i'm just so excited for in the end it always does to drop! i've been listening to sunshine baby nonstop (to be fair, i haven't been listening to a lot of music this week though).
i've only listened to the MUNA "essentials" playlist and i really like the things i've heard but i need to do a proper deep dive! i downloaded all three of their albums to listen to on the plane tomorrow, but we'll see if i actually end up listening to it! speaking of speak now TV, i wonder when we'll get a speak now TV vault puzzle! i would love for debut to get it's own section (and for more speak now songs on tour), but i feel like it's pretty set in stone now unfortunately, at least for the US leg. i'm still crossing my fingers for surprise songs though! there are a lot of things on speak now that i'm attached to (like the shaky breath in last kiss) that i hope she'll keep for the rerecording too! and yes!! i'm super super excited for gracie's deluxe good riddance! i ordered the vinyl a little bit ago, and i'm really glad that i waited to order it (there was a good riddance vinyl available in the UK that i almost caved and bought, but it didn't include the deluxe tracks). noah kahan is also, i believe, announcing the deluxe version of stick season today (?) which is exciting! i think his vinyl is also going to include the deluxe songs, which i'm really thrilled about. i'm still a little bit bummed that the midnights 3 AM songs aren't on vinyl!
i think my favorite deluxe/bonus album songs include: if this was a movie, come back...be here, jump then fall (i'm counting fearless platinum edition), the great war, new romantics, you are in love, wonderland, bruises by reneé rapp, it'll all work out by phoebe bridgers, and then all four tracks on the emails i can't send: fwd album by sabrina carpenter (opposite, feather, lonesome, and things i wish you said). i feel like i'm missing some songs here, but that's all i can think of right now! what are some of your favorites? 🤍

George Harrison, Friar Park, circa 1990; photo by Terry O'Neill.
George's jukebox at Kinfauns has been explored by the Harrison Archive (and is available as a playlist here), thanks in large part to an article about it, published in the Record Mirror's 1 January 1966 issue.
George's jukeboxes at Friar Park, however, are a little more obscure. The following playlist of songs featured on the jukeboxes and mentioned in some way from 1970 onward is an approximate one only, based on doing some digging into print interviews, audio interviews, and written pieces by family and friends. (The tracks include information previously posted on the Harrison Archive. For - hopefully - easier navigation, I've also bolded the artists -- and tracks known for certain to have been either on the jukeboxes or George's favorites.)
"Stardust" (instrumental) - Hoagy Carmichael "Our son, Dhani, and I, like George’s friends, were spoiled by his rich and loving presence: from the morning wake-up call, which could have been (depending on our location and mood) a morning raga, a Vedic chant, a Mozart concerto, Cab Calloway’s ‘Bugle Call Rag,’ or Hoagy’s earliest instrument version of ‘Stardust'..." - Olivia Harrison [read more]
"Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" - The Four Tops "Rescue Me" - Fontella Bass
These tracks receive shoutouts in George's "This Song" (and the Four Tops were Sixties favorites, too, appearing on his Kinfauns jukebox).
"Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" - Cab Calloway Clearly a favorite by one of his favorite artists, covered by George for Jools Holland's TV show, and also released on his posthumous album Brainwashed.
"When I'm Cleaning Windows" - George Formby "September In The Rain" - Dinah Washington "Dizzy Fingers" - Zez Confrey
George was a member of the George Formby Society (and attended conventions with Olivia and Dhani), and became friends with another attendee, Ray Bernard, who recalled the latter two of the above songs as some of George's favorites. (The Beatles also covered "September In The Rain" for their Decca audition; I'm not sure if George preferred Dinah Washington's version to any other, but its release year is closest to when the Fabs covered it, hence the inclusion on the playlist.)
"A Shine On Your Shoes" - Fred Astaire
Covered by George in a home video shared by the Harrison Family in the Guitar Collection app and the deluxe limited edition of Living In The Material World (and, on 1 February 2020, by Olivia on her Instagram, where she explained that George was playing a Danny Ferrington Keoki ukulele).
"True Love" - Bing Crosby & Grace Kelly
George covered this song as well, for his 1976 album Thirty-Three & 1/3. As Olivia recalled on Dark Horse Radion in 2018: "We'd been watching ‪Bing Crosby‬ and Grace Kelly, watching that movie ['High Society'], and they do a duet, and just that little harmony thing they do, because she wasn’t known as really a singer; he’d play and then we'd sing it." [read more]
"Roll Over Beethoven" - Chuck Berry
A longtime favorite, George covered this with The Beatles, during his 1991 Japan tour, and during his 1992 Natural Law Party concert, where it became the last song he played live onstage at a concert in his lifetime. As George said, "there hasn’t been any rock & roll better than that." [read more]
"Hong Kong Blues" - Hoagy Carmichael
Hoagy Carmichael was a favorite of George's, and he covered this song for his 1981 album Somewhere In England.
"Barnacle Bill the Sailor" - Hoagy Carmichael
A favorite, associated with George by Dhani, and mentioned by Olivia. "He would go up at parties to the DJ and say, ‘I’ve got something really amazing.’ ‘Cause he was who he was, they would listen to him, and then everyone would just be bummed out, it would clear the dance floor. And then he’d come back later - ‘I’ve got something else’ - and he’d put it on again. You know, he would just do this until the DJ was like [exasperated]." - Dhani Harrison, la minute rock, Rolling Stone France, 28 Nov 2017 [read more]
"Midnight Special" - Leadbelly "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" - Hank Williams "The Great Pretender" - The Platters "Words Of Love" - Buddy Holly
The songs themselves might not be George's favorites or jukebox selections -- as yet, I haven't found any mention of actual song titles, so these are just personal choices -- but the artist were mentioned by George and Olivia; and "Words Of Love" was obviously a favorite, having been covered by The Beatles, and, according to Mark Lewisohn's Complete Beatles Chronicle research, initially having been sung by George and John.
"The Ying Tong Song" - The Goons "I'm Walking Backwards For Christmas" - The Goons
Both these tracks were mentioned by Olivia as having been on the Friar Park jukeboxes in December 1974.
"The Lumberjack Song" - Monty Python "Spam Song" - Monty Python "Layla" - Eric Clapton
These tracks were mentioned by Eric Idle as having been on George's jukeboxes at Friar Park. "The Lumberjack Song" was of course also performed at the Concert for George.
"Heartbreak Hotel" - Elvis Presley
Eric Idle also recalled early Elvis being on the jukeboxes; and of course, George named the song as his first musical root.
"Blue Suede Shoes" - Carl Perkins "The Bells of Rhymney" - The Byrds
These two Perkins and Byrds songs were mentioned as favorite songs by George in the March 1997 issue of Guitar World.
"Mauna Loa" - Gabby Pahinui
Another artist loved by George, although again, this track choice is just a haphazard personal one, since there doesn't seem to be any public mention of which of Pahinui's songs were George's preferred ones.
"Ooo Baby Baby" - The Miracles "I'll Try Something New" - The Miracles
George absolutely loved The Miracles, and Smokey Robinson specifically, collecting their records, and writing songs in honor of Smokey ("Ooh Baby (You Know That I Love You) -- a nod to the first of the two Miracles tracks listed here -- on the 1975 album Extra Texture, and "Pure Smokey" on the 1976 album Thirty-Three & 1/3). As Olivia has recalled: "We used to sit around singing a lot of Smokey Robinson songs. That kind of sealed our relationship, I think. [George] said, 'You're the only person I've ever known who sang the high note at the end of "I'll Try Something New."'"
“Back On The Chain Gang” - The Pretenders “Brothers In Arms” - Dire Straits “Cold Day In Hell” - Gary Moore
The three tracks by The Pretenders, Dire Straits and Gary Moore were mentioned as favorites by George in the March 1997 issue of Guitar World.
"Long Tall Sally" - Little Richard
George was a Little Richard all his life, as various comments over the years show.
"Tandoori Chicken" - Ronnie Spector "I Am Missing You" - Lakshmi Shankar "Rebel Music" (live) - Bob Marley & The Wailers
Put down on tape during the "Try Some, Buy Some" sessions, "Tandoori Chicken" was an improvised song, as George recalled: "a 12-bar thing done on the spot with Mal our roadie and Joe the chauffeur." For Dark Horse Records, and featuring Lakshmi Shankar, one of [George's] favorite singers," another song for this playlist is "I Am Missing You." The Marley track was chosen from the setlist of the three 1975 Roxy show attended by George and Olivia, recalled by George as "the best thing I've seen in ten years. [...] I could watch The Wailers all night."
"The Rain Song" - Led Zeppelin "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)" - The Beach Boys
"The Rain Song" was written in response to a comment made by George, and subsequently made it on one of the two jukeboxes. The Beach Boys song was on the jukeboxes, and -- like "The Rain Song" -- played at the wedding of Dhani and Sola, as reported by Vogue in 2012.
"Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours" - Stevie Wonder "Telephone Line" - Electric Light Orchestra "Come On In My Kitchen" - Robert Johnson "When The Levee Breaks" - Memphis Minnie
All four of these artists were mentioned as favorites by George in a 1976 interview. (The titles are arbitrary choices, since the interviewer didn't ask George for any further details. However, Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen" was covered by George and band during rehearsals for the Concert for Bangladesh.)
"Maria Elena" - Ry Cooder "Concert in B (live in 1963) - Andrés Segovia
Two artists mentioned frequently by George as being favorites (Segovia first in 1963 -- hence the choice of a live piece from that year -- and up through the 1990s). The Cooder track was specifically mentioned by Olivia in the June 2018 issue of Songlines.
"Piano Concert No. 21" - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Olivia mentioned a Mozart concerto as being something George would play in the mornings as they were starting the day, so this is another random choice of a concerto.
"The Weight" - The Band
The atmosphere of the song inspired the Harrisong "All Things Must Pass," as George recalled in 1987 -- he also named it as a song he admired in that same interview. In a 1974 interview with Capital Radio, George deemed The Band "the best band I've ever seen."
"Farther On Down The Road (You Will Accompany Me)" - Jesse Ed Davis
A Harrisong was given to Jesse by George, and recorded by Jesse before it was released by George himself (but since "Sue Me, Sue You Blues," the song in question, is already on a collaborations playlist....); this Davis selection (written by Jesse and Taj Mahal) was covered live by George and Eric Clapton in December 1978.
"Isn't It A Pity" (cover) - Nina Simone "Backwater Blues" - Big Bill Broonzy "Changes" - Bix 'n' Bing
Nina Simone's cover of the Harrisong "Isn't It A Pity" in turn influenced the mood of another Harrisong; and Dhani recalled listening to Simone, Big Bill Broonzy (who is name-checked in the Harrisong "Wreck Of The Hesperus") and Bix 'n' Bing together with his dad (these tracks are once more personal choices).
"April Kisses" - Eddie Lang
The first song on this playlist, "Stardust," was "one of [George's] favorite songs," as Olivia has recalled; she also named Eddie Lang (though she didn't mention a specific title).
"Kalimankou Denkou" - Le Mystere des voix bulgares
George enthused about this Bulgarian choir in numerous interviews, and introduced this particular song during his interview on Rockline in February 1988.
"Taxes On The Farmer Feeds Us All" - Ry Cooder
"Later, after a lasagna dinner in his ornately paneled kitchen with his wife Olivia, their son Dhani (just home from his school year at Brown University in the States), and Olivia’s sister, Linda, Harrison takes his visitor upstairs to his Friar Park Studio. Picking up a nearby National dobro from the vast array of vintage guitars hanging from the walls, Harrison slips a glass bottleneck on his finger as he seats himself to strum 'The Farmer Is The Man Who Feeds Us All,' the traditional tune of 1860s America made famous in the 1920s by Fiddlin’ John Carson and later popularized on Ry Cooder’s 1971 'Into The Purple Valley” album as 'Taxes On The Farmer Feeds Us All.' 'That’s where I first heard the tune,”'says Harrison of Cooder’s interpretation, before he begins to sing: 'The farmer is the man, the farmer is the man/Buys on credit until the fall/Then they take him by the hand/And they lead him from his land/And the merchant he’s the man who gets it all.'" (Billboard, 19 Jun 1999)
"God's Own Drunk" - Lord Buckley
This particular Buckley piece was mentioned by George in a 1979 radio interview promoting his eponymous album, and the song "If You Believe": "Pray, give up, and it all recedes away from you. I don’t know if you… you must have heard Lord Buckley, you know, well, there is a thing he did called 'God’s Own Drunk.' I think it was that. Anyway, it was one of Lord Buckley’s things and he was talking about love. He said: 'Love is like a beautiful garden, you know, when you use it it spreads, but when you don’t -- it recedes.' And it’s true. It’s really that in its simplest form." [read more]
"Free Fallin'" - Tom Petty
As Dhani has said, he can remember "getting advance copies sent to my dad from Tom. He’d be like, 'You want to hear Tom’s new stuff?' And it would be the first time anyone’s heard 'Free Fallin'." (Premier Guitar, Jan 2018)
"Let It Be Me" - The Everly Brothers
Covered by George in a demo version after seeing the Everly Brothers in concert (George's cover appears on Early Takes Vol. 1).
"Clair de Lune" (cover) - Isao Tomita
One of George's favorites, as Olivia has recalled.
"México Lindo y Querido" - Jorge Negrete
Negrete was mentioned as a favorite by George, and Olivia recalled Negrete being on George's jukebox.
"Bugle Call Rag" - Cab Calloway
Recalled by Olivia in her introduction for Harrison, and as George's school wakeup call for Dhani.
"Cool River" - Maria Muldaur "Fear Of Flying" - Charlie Dore
Two more specific songs mentioned or covered by George.
"Sweet Leilani" - Bing Crosby
Mentioned as a favorite of George's by Tom Petty, and by Olivia.
"Every Grain Of Sand" - Bob Dylan
Named as one of George's favorite songs in his June 1999 Billboard interview: "I mean, you tell me one person other than Bob Dylan who has a moral message in a tune that's improved upon Bob's words in his song 'Every Grain of Sand.'"
"Kaliyuga Varadan" & "Ragam Tanam Pallavi" & "Gajavadhana" - U. Srinivas
One of George's favorite artists, as he, Dhani and Olivia have recalled; these three particular tracks were singled out by Olivia in the June 2018 issue of Songlines.
"Raga - Manj Khamaj" - Ravi Shankar "Guru Bandana (Prayer)" - Ali Akbar Khan "Abhogi" - Hariprasad Chaurasia "Kafi Holi (Spring Festival Of Color)" - Ravi Shankar "Enna Thavam" - Papanasam Sivan "Thumri - Mishra Tilang Raga - Addha Taal" - Sultan Khan "You And Me" - Zakir Hussain "Raga Chayya Nat" - Kala Ramnath
The eight selections above are mentioned by Olivia in the June 2018 issue of Songlines.
“México” - Mariachi Sol de Mexico
In 1998, George commissioned José Hernández - founder of Mariachi Sol de México - to translate and arrange the Harrisong "Dark Sweet Lady" in Spanish, as a special version for Olivia. While that recording is understandably a private one, mariachi music seems to have been a favorite of the Harrison family and the Arias family, as it's mentioned as having been played at family events held in California. And: "Last year I brought over a mariachi orchestra [Mariachi Sol de México] and we had a private concert at Friar Park because I got tired of waiting 30 years for someone else to do it. It was my way to let my friends experience that music – which was what George was always trying to do. He wanted people to understand and be moved by the music that he loved." - Olivia Harrison, Songlines, Jun 2018
"Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie" - Bob Dylan "Bhoop Ghara" - Hariprasad Chaurasia, Shivkumar Sharma, Brij Bhushan Kabra
"George used to always say that if ever you are not feeling right, you should listen to Bob Dylan's 'Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie' and 'Call of the Valley.'" (Olivia Harrison) This track from "Call Of The Valley" was mentioned by Olivia in the June 2018 issue of Songlines: "[it was] something George had on our juke box. We played it as a remedy in our home if you were feeling a certain way. Kabra was one of George’' heroes as a slide guitarist, up there with Ry Cooder."
"Sarve Shaam" - Ravi Shankar
From the 1997 album Chants of India (produced by George), the song was also performed at the Concert for George, and was clearly very special to George, as Olivia remembers: "At the end of his life George said to me that all he could listen to was 'Sarve Shaam.' After all the sounds and sights and tastes you experience over a lifetime, it came down to the purity of 'Sarve Shaam.'"

WHAT IF THEY REISSUED APOLLONIA 6 BY APOLLONIA 6?
When Vanity left the Purple Rain project, she was replaced by Patricia Kotero who also took over from her in Vanity 6. Patricia was renamed Apollonia + the band were renamed Apollonia 6. They appeared in the Purple Rain film + released a self titled album, Apollonia 6, in October 1984.  The band split up in 1985 and Susan, Brenda and Apollonia all went their separate ways.
The album went through several different track listings before it was finalised and several songs that were originally intended for the album went elsewhere. Sheila E. got The Glamorous Life, Oliver’s House and Next Time Wipe the Lipstick off Your Collar - The Bangles got Manic Monday - and Take Me With U was added to the Purple Rain soundtrack with 17 Days being used as a B-side for When Doves Cry (but w/Prince as lead vocal). Velvet Kitty Cat remained unreleased until a few years ago.
The track listing was: Happy Birthday, Mr Christian - Sex Shooter - Blue Limousine - A Million Miles (I Love You) - Oooh She She Wa Wa - Some Kind of Lover - In A Spanish Villa. Susan did lead vocals on Oooh She She Wa Wa, Brenda did lead vocals on Blue Limousine, A Million Miles (I Love You) and Some Kind of Lover. Apollonia did lead vocals on Happy Birthday, Mr Christian, Sex Shooter and In A Spanish Villa.
Sex Shooter appears in the film, Purple Rain but there was also a separate music video shot. There was also a short film made that has several of the band’s songs in it, such as Happy Birthday, Mr Christian + Blue Limousine. This was never officially released but has been available on YouTube for a while. (The film also features Ricky Nelson + Edy Williams).  They released 2 singles Sex Shooter + Blue Limousine (which had album tracks as B-sides). They did some TV appearances but never played live/toured.
For Disc 1 I would stick to the original album but maybe include some extended versions/remixes.
For Disc 2 I would bring back Take Me With U (Apollonia’s duet w/Prince) from Purple Rain as well as 17 Days (assuming there’s a version somewhere that has Brenda on lead vocals) + Manic Monday (their demo version). I don’t know if Apollonia 6 versions exist for the other songs provisionally included on their album  - Velvet Kitty Cat, The Glamorous Life, Next Time Wipe the Lipstick off Your Collar and Oliver’s House - but I imagine it’s worth a look. For Prince-vocal versions, the deluxe version of Purple Rain already included his version of Velvet Kitty Cat + 17 Days and Originals included Sex Shooter, The Glamorous Life and Manic Monday. The only other Apollonia 6 song I’ve been able to find w/Prince vocals is A Million Miles (I Love You).
For the DVD I would include the Sex Shooter footage from Purple Rain as well as the music video. I would definitely include that short film + maybe any TV performances/interviews they did around this time.

Todrick Hall
Tumblr media
Todrick Hall (born April 4, 1985) is an American singer, songwriter, actor, director, choreographer and YouTuber. He first gained national attention on the 9th season of the reality singing competition American Idol, where he made it to the semi-finals. Following this, he amassed a following on YouTube with multiple viral videos including original songs, parodies, and skits. A documentary series about his video-making process titled Todrick aired on MTV in 2015.
Starting with season 8, Hall became a resident choreographer on RuPaul's Drag Race, and occasional judge. From 2016 to 2017, Hall starred as Lola in Kinky Boots on Broadway. Later in 2017, he began appearances as Billy Flynn in Chicago on Broadway and the West End.
As a singer-songwriter he has released three studio albums, including the visual albums Straight Outta Oz (2016) and Forbidden (2018).
Early life
Todrick Hall was born in Plainview, Texas, on April 4, 1985. His family consists of his mother, father, one brother, and a stepfather. He knew he was different, he liked playing with dolls, and worried if they would still accept him if he turned out to be one of those gay people they made fun of on television. Hall began studying ballet at nine-years-old, and later worked with Fantasia in The Color Purple. He came out as gay to his family when he was fifteen; it took them a few years to accept. He also appeared in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and performed with Royal Caribbean, Holland America Line, and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.
Career
2009–2010: American Idol
On August 24, 2009, Hall auditioned to the ninth season of American Idol in Dallas, Texas. He sang a self-composed song mentioning the judges – Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi, and guest judge Joe Jonas – to plead his case for inclusion in the program. All four judges approved of his participation; he went into Hollywood week and eventually the semi-finals. In the Top 24, he sang Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and in the Top 20, he performed Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do with It". He was eliminated in the Top 16 on 11 March 2010 after his rendition of Queen's "Somebody to Love;" he was one of four contestants eliminated in that round, and thus ranked between 13th and 16th overall.
2011–2013: Career growth and YouTube fame
Hall joined YouTube on May 27, 2006, and posted his first video to the site, a performance of "It's Hard to Say Goodbye", in 2008. In following years, his audience has grown considerably: as of June, 2019, Hall currently has 3.1 million subscribers on YouTube, and as of March 2018, his videos have been viewed 531.9 million times. Hall's videos include several of his own original songs and music videos, choreographed flash mobs for Ariana Grande and Beyoncé performed in an actual Target store, (the latter of which Beyoncé personally recognized Hall for), musical collaborations with Pentatonix, and personal updates.
In May 2011, he released a video audition for the third season of Glee titled "I Wanna Be on Glee", for possible inclusion in the show. Though the video was popular, Hall was not cast in the program. In November 2013, Virgin America produced a pop-music safety video directed by Jon M. Chu with music by Jean-Yves Decornet. Hall wrote the song and lyrics and starred in the video.
In December 2013, Hall released a Christmas album entitled Dear Santa, with covers of "This Christmas" and "Sleigh Bells", produced by wiidope as well as original songs "So Cold" and "SplitsOnXmasTrees".
2014–2015: Pop Star High and Todrick docuseries
From April 1 to May 13, 2014, Hall released an eight episode web series on his YouTube channel called Pop Star High. The series takes place in a world where all of the most famous Pop Stars of our day all went to high school together. The series portrays and parodies pop stars like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Ne-Yo, Kanye West, Eminem, Jay-Z, and Tyga, and draws on the tropes of high school comedy movies. The soundtrack for the series was released on April 1, 2014.
On October 22, 2014, MTV announced Todrick, a docuseries following Hall, would premiere in 2015. On 20 December 2014, Hall produced and appeared in a commercial for the series and featured other celebrities' holiday wishes. Eight episodes of the docuseries were ordered and aired throughout 2015. The soundtrack for the show was released on October 13, 2015.
In October 2015, he was picked as Elvis Duran's Artist of the Month and was featured on NBC's Today show hosted by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb and broadcast nationally where he performed live his single "Wind It Up".
2016–2017: Straight Outta Oz, Broadway, and RuPaul's Drag Race
Hall appeared as a guest judge on the eighth season of RuPaul's Drag Race; the episode, which featured a Wizard of Oz-inspired challenge, first aired on April 11, 2016. Hall reappeared as a full-time judge for RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars 2 later in 2016 and again for the ninth season aired throughout 2017.
Along with Drag Race, Hall frequently appeared on Logo TV's game show Gay for Play Game Show Starring RuPaul alongside other celebrities. A second Season of Gay for Play is expected.
On June 23, 2016, Todrick self-released his second album, Straight Outta Oz. Straight Outta Oz is a visual concept album that uses the imagery of The Wizard of Oz to explore Todrick's own life and rise to fame. The project's first video was posted to YouTube on June 23, 2016 as well. Shortly thereafter, Hall announced the Straight Outta Oz Tour to promote the album. The tour originally ran between July 7, and August 12, 2016 in the United States and Canada.
The Straight Outta Oz Tour was interrupted by Hall's casting in the Broadway musical Kinky Boots. Hall starred as Lola, a drag queen cabaret performer. Hall's performance was well received by critics. He performed as Lola from November 1, 2016, to March 1, 2017.
The Straight Outta Oz Tour was revived in 2017 and ran between March 30, and June 5, in various North American, European, and Australian locations. It was accompanied by an expanded deluxe edition that included songs that were featured on the tour but not on the original version of the album. Additionally, the album included an extended version and new video for "Wrong Bitch" featuring Bob the Drag Queen, and a rerecorded version of Todrick's previous single "Low" featuring RuPaul.
In August 2017, he had a cameo as a back-up dancer in the music video for Taylor Swift's song, "Look What You Made Me Do".
From November 30, 2017, to January 14, 2018, played Billy Flynn in a limited engagement role in Chicago. During his tenure, the show had its best-grossing week in its 21-year Broadway history.
In December he released the documentary film Behind the Curtain about the production behind Straight Outta Oz. It was screened in select theatres and later released on home video. Later that month he had a guest appearance in the Bob's Burgers Season 8 episode "The Bleakening" as drag queen Miss Triple-Xmas (or Cleavage to Beaver) performing the song "Twinkly Lights". He also released a medley of covers of songs from the Pitch Perfect film series that was featured on the Pitch Perfect 3 Special Edition soundtrack.
2018–present: Forbidden, Haus Party & The Greatest Dancer
In March 2018 he announced his new visual album follow-up to Straight Outta Oz called Forbidden. It was released on March 27, 2018. To promote the album, Hall embarked on Forbidden: The Tour across the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
On May 15, 2019, Hall revealed that he will be releasing a trilogy of extended plays to be released across the next six months. The first EP, Haus Party, Pt. 1, was released on May 23, 2019. The first single "Glitter" was released with the album pre-order on May 16, 2019. It also featured Hall's first big hit "Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels." The EPs will be supported by the Haus Party World Tour. While it was originally announced that Part Two would be released in July followed by Party Three in September 2019, the release of Haus Party, Pt. 2 was delayed to September 19, 2019.. It was supported by the singles "Wig", "Fag", and "Dripeesha" (featuring Tiffany Haddish). Part Three was originally announced to be released on October 30, 2019, then November 27. It was put up for pre-order on January 10, 2020 with two singles available, "Blue" and "Pink Dreams", and an announced release date of February 14, 2020. However, this was later pushed back to May 1, 2020.
On June 17, 2019, Hall appeared in the music video for singer-songwriter Taylor Swift's song "You Need to Calm Down"; he co-executive produced the video with Swift. On June 19, 2019, Hall announced that he will be returning to Broadway to play Ogie Anhorn in the musical Waitress opposite friend Colleen Ballinger, who will be making her Broadway debut as Dawn Williams from August 20 until September 15.
In August 2019 he joined the panel of Dance Captains for the second series of The Greatest Dancer alongside the other Dance Captains Cheryl, Oti Mabuse and Matthew Morrison. The series aired on BBC One in January 2020.
Artistry
Hall is a baritenor with a soulful, expressive voice, including falsetto; in addition to a singer, Hall is also a rapper. The genre of his works include R&B, pop, hip hop, neo-soul, funk, and musical theatre. Many of his lyrics include elements of social commentary, such as gun violence in and against black communities in "Water Guns" (featuring Jordin Sparks), acceptance of interracial relationships in "Color" (featuring Jay Armstrong Johnson) and queer culture; Hall writes and produces much of his own music with Jeeve Ducornet and wiidope. Hall also posts musical tributes to his favorite musical artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Taylor Swift. These tributes feature elaborately-produced mashups of the artists' songs sung by Hall.
Hall's music videos often feature extravagant production value not typically associated with artists outside major labels. Hall's videos often include bespoke costumes and urban fashion, elaborate sets, and extensive choreography, much of which is designed or created by Hall himself. He frequently directs his own videos as well. As part of his style, many of Hall's music videos include drag as a central component, either featuring Hall in drag himself or famous drag queens including RuPaul, Bob the Drag Queen, Willam Belli, and Alaska Thunderfuck, among others.

Silver Silver STAR! or, the 25th Anniversary of the 25th Anniversary!
Twenty five years ago this week, the 1968 Julie Andrews musical Star! made its long overdue return to the screens of the world –– at least, the small screens –– when the film was finally released to home video on 17 November 1993. Billed as “the return of a lost classic,” the heavily-promoted 25th Anniversary release was the first time in decades that the complete version of Star! had been widely available and it marked a watershed in the film’s latter-day recuperation (Edwards, 1993).
Director Robert Wise long remained haunted by the commercial and critical failure of Star!. "I’ve had films that haven’t paid off,” he lamented, “but Star! was my biggest disappointment because I think it’s a better film and more of an achievement than was acknowledged by the mass audience” (Leeman: 195). The film had cultivated a small but devoted band of fans over the years, many of whom sent appreciative letters to the director, but Wise continued to hope that Star! might yet find broader vindication and shake off its unjust reputation as “the H-bomb of musicals” (Kanfer: 78).
In 1984, amidst a growth in popularity of classic film revivals, Twentieth Century-Fox struck a new print of Star! for release to the repertory house circuit (Edwards 1990). It was the first time the full roadshow version of Star! had been seen in North America since 1968 and, while it mainly screened in niche metropolitan revival houses, it played to hugely enthusiastic audiences. Attending a New York screening in August 1990, Robert Wise recalled that Star! “went over like gangbusters...The audience applauded after every number and gave me and the film such a hand” (Thompson: 96). Meanwhile, general interest in Star! continued to grow. In 1990, an article on the history of the film appeared in Movie Collector’s World (Edwards 1990). And in May 1992, Premiere magazine nominated Star! as its “most wanted” title on home video (”Widescreen”: 85).
Emboldened by the groundswell of support, Robert Wise approached Fox about remastering a version of Star! for home video and all agreed the time was ripe. The director personally supervised a new transfer from the original 65mm negative and six-track magnetic soundtrack source materials which had happily remained intact in the Fox vaults. The remastered version of Star! screened for the first time on the respected cable network, American Movie Classics in early-1993 (Edwards 1993). Reviewing the AMC broadcast for the Los Angeles Times, Kevin Thomas called Star! “one of the most under appreciated of all Hollywood major productions,” praising the film as "engrossing...and played stunningly by Julie Andrews” (6).
Throughout 1993, Wise and Fox continued to finalise preparations for the film’s video release. The deluxe two-tape set was officially launched on 16 November 1993 (’street date’: 17 November) with a special Silver Anniversary screening of Star! at the DGA Theatre in Hollywood. Attended by many of the original cast and crew –– including Julie Andrews, Richard Crenna, Robert Wise, Saul Chaplin, and Michael Kidd –– the screening was a happy reunion cum symbolic homecoming for the film. Star! is “finally back where it belongs” said Julie in a warm interview at the event (“Silver Star!”).
The film’s soundtrack, which had also been long out of print, was given a companion release to CD and cassette by Fox Records on 23 November. With the inclusion of two previously unreleased tracks –– the extended version of the title song  by Julie and Daniel Massey’s “Forbidden Fruit” –– and featuring a handsome booklet with liner notes by T.J. Edwards –– a veritable one-man cheer squad for Star! during these years –– the CD soundtrack re-release further cemented the aura of rediscovery around the film and the sense that, after decades of neglect, Star! could finally be seen and heard in its original splendour (Sanello: D5; Thomas, B: 14).
And this time round US critics were much more receptive than most had been back in 1968. Reviewing the video release for the Los Angeles Times, Sue Martin called it “a handsome period production [that] holds up with Andrews in a tour de force portrayal as the earthy, tenacious Lawrence” (44). Martie Zad of The Washington Post dubbed it “one of filmdom’s grandest musicals”, saying “[i]t is a treat to watch and listen to Andrews whose voice at this point in her career was simply pure and magical” (N5). Dave Staten of the Daily News enthused:
“Star! is bouncy and fast-paced and much better that I expected. You see, I was one of this people who was scared away in 1968 by the bad notices. This grand movie deserves a new life on video” (26).
In response to the fulsome reception, Fox green-lighted an even more ambitious ‘special edition’ release of Star! on laserdisc, a kind of top-end precursor to DVD and the home cinephile’s medium of choice in the 90s. An impressively weighty package –– literally, as those big old discs were heavy as rocks –– the laserdisc edition was spread over two discs presented in a lavish gatefold album. It was jam-packed with special features, including a detailed production history, rare behind-the scenes images, a lively audio commentary by Wise and other members of the production team, and a charming featurette about the film’s 25th anniversary screening at the DGA. Indeed, the compilation of supplementals was so dense and involved that it delayed the disc’s release by many months. The Star! laserdisc finally hit the shelves on August 16, 1995 with a USD$80.00 price tag, not exactly cheap today let alone 25 years ago, and it quickly established a new benchmark for special edition film releases to the home video market (“Be Glad”: 2; “Widescreen Special Edition”: 85)
Now, if only we could get Fox to play ball again 25 years later and authorise that long-awaited BluRay release of Star! for the 50th anniversary!

Meet Azrael / Death (Lucifer TV series related)
Okay, IF Lucifer gets picked up, one of the biggest rumors is that Azrael (Angel of Death) will be a character in season 4.  This actually seems very likely.
Season 2 of Lucifer told us about Azrael in regard to how she works in the TV universe.   Azrael is Lucifer’s sister and The Angel of Death.  It was her sword that allowed Lucifer to cut a hole in reality so Mum could go off and create her own universe.
Tumblr media
If season four happens, some of you may be curious to know who this character was in the Lucifer comic books.
Based on descriptions from Lucifer: Season 2, Azrael of the TV series is actually a combination of two characters.
Character 1:  (Really only the source for the name) is The Azrael of lore (who is actually male or non-gender depending on your view of angels).
And
Character 2:  The heavier influence.  Death of The Endless created by Neil Gaiman (also creator of this version of Lucifer).
Death of the Endless is the living embodiment of Death incarnate.  This character is who the Lucifer TV series version of Azrael seems most likely to have roots in.
Who is Death of The Endless?
Tumblr media
Continue reading for some information about the comic book version of Death.
The Endless are seven siblings who are God-like entities in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Universe.  They are anthropomorphic personifications, meaning they embody certain aspects of Sentient life.  They are actually more powerful than most Gods but are less powerful than The Presence (The God that made Lucifer) and they are less powerful than Lucifer himself.
This was confirmed in the Sandman storyline called Season of Mists.  The Sandman, himself, Morpheus AKA Dream of The Endless discusses Lucifer with his raven servant, Matthew.
Tumblr media
The Endless are:
Destiny (male), Death (Female), Dream (male), Destruction (male), Desire (Genderfluid), Despair (Female), Delirium (Formerly known as Delight, female),
According to the message Morpheus (Dream) had Cain deliver to Lucifer in Sandman: Season of Mists, they are actually cousins of Lucifer and the angels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Death is actually the one Endless most like an angel as she does have wings of her own.  Her wings are never shown in panel art but they are shown on the cover art of the issue of Sandman where she made her first appearance.  “The Sound of her wings.”  This is issue 8 of Sandman.
Tumblr media
An audio play / motion comic version of The Sound of Her wings can be watched here.
youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHkqHsxqlHM
There is a non-Canon Manga that was published retelling Sandman: Season of Mists (the storyline where Lucifer quits ruling Hell) from Death’s point of view.   It is called Death: At Death’s Door. You can see her wings in one page of that manga.
Tumblr media
You never see Death’s wings in the panel art of the actual Sandman or Lucifer comics but Morpheus (Dream) can hear them (”The sound of her wings”).
Tumblr media
It is implied that perhaps only the dead can actually see her wings and she only unfurls them when delivering a soul to the afterlife.
The version of The Angel of Death that appeared in “American Horror Story: Asylum” might have been inspired by her.
Tumblr media
Death is also female in Mexican traditions.
There are multiple different afterlifes in Sandman, just like in American Gods.
Your afterlife is determined by your belief.  Some people go to Heaven, some go to Hell, some are reincarnated, some go to the Elysium Fields while others might go to Tartarus, and yet others might go to Valhalla, ect...
Death physically resembles a nineteen-year-old Goth girl.  Some of her own younger siblings actually look older than her.  Dream, for example, is quite ageless, and most assuredly not a teenager.  Sometimes he can seem young while other times he looks very old.  It’s very hard to determine a specific age look for him.
Tumblr media
But he has never looked like a teenager.
Death is always seen with black hair and has grey-blue (human looking) eyes.  She often wears a black tank top and black form fitting jeans with black ankle boots. She is very pale (though not as pale as Morpheus) and under her left eye are the markings of an Eye of Horus Tattoo.
Often she wears black gloves that end at her wrist and instead of a scythe she sometimes carries an umbrella.  She’s very fond of Disney films, including Mary Poppins and The Little Mermaid.   For the artwork of the comics her physical appearance was inspired by a real woman, a nineteen-year-old girl named Cinamon Hadley, just as Lucifer’s appearance was modeled after rock star, David Bowie.
Like Lucifer, Death is a psychopomp, meaning she can transport souls to the afterlife.
Despite her purpose of delivering souls to the afterlife, Death is not a depressed or depressing character.  She is friendly, perky and kind hearted.  Death would actually prefer it if you end up in a good afterlife.  She doesn’t judge anyone and she tries to be a friend to everyone.
It was revealed that a long time ago, for a while, Death had become cold, until someone asked her how she would like it.  Realizing she had mistreated the souls she was attending, Death decided to humble herself, and remind herself of what it is like for them to be mortal (since she had never been human).  After this revelation, Death decided to turn herself human once a century to always remind herself why she should be kind, and what people experience while alive.
A story of one of Death’s human experiences can be found in the stand-alone comic, Death: The High cost of Living by Neil Gaiman, which is available in Death: The Deluxe edition.
Death tries to be a friend to all and values the virtues taught in Disney films such as friends, family, love, compassion, ect.
It is for this reason that I felt the show Lucifer dropped a ball by introducing Ella’s brother and not having a surprise reveal that Ella was Death / Azrael in disguise.  She actually fits the personality very well.
Here is death in her appearance in DC’s Action Comics 894 in 2011 talking to Lex Luthor.  The Endless and their stories are canon to DC comics and Vertigo and they transcend universes.
Tumblr media
As I said, Death actually prefers it when you end up with a good afterlife.
Each one of The Endless has a sigil, a symbol which represents them.   For Death this is her ankh, the Egyptian symbol of Eternal Life.
Tumblr media
She wears an Ankh as a pendant.  The necklace itself has no power but the symbol means the world to her.  And her family can call out to her by drawing an ankh and addressing her, or clutching a representation of her ankh in front of a mirror in their personal gallery (Each of The Endless has a gallery room for communicating with each other when they are not in the same realm).
An occult organization called The Order of Ancient Mysteries tried to summon Death over a century ago and accidentally summoned her brother, Dream (Morpheus AKA The Sandman) instead.  Despite realizing their mistake they chose to hold him prisoner for over seventy-two-years.
Tumblr media
When Morpheus finally escaped his prison he had to track down items stolen from him during his imprisonment, including his pouch of dream sand (He is The Sandman after all), his helm (a creepy battle mask carved from the bones of dead Old Gods), and his ruby dreamstone amulet.  This was actually the very first storyline in The Sandman comics.  Preludes and Nocturnes.  Death’s first comic book appearance was toward the end of this storyline.
It is also during Preludes and Nocturnes that we see Lucifer for the first time in issue 4 of Sandman, “A Hope in Hell.” Morpheus (Dream) had to travel to Hell to retrieve his stolen helm.  It is not until Sandman: Season of Mists that Lucifer quits ruling Hell like in the TV show Lucifer.
Death is not just present at the moment someone dies but also is there at births as well.  Destruction of The Endless had a theory that all of The Endless actually represent a thing and it’s opposite.  Desire is also hate, Dream is also reality as dreams can influence reality, Death is also life, Despair (whether she means to or not) also represents Hope, ect...
In Sandman: Endless Nights, there is a story set in the distant past where Despair spoke with the humanoid embodiment of Krypton’s sun and suggested that Krypton should bear life even though the planet was doomed to die.  Despair felt that that it would be glorious if when Krypton died only one survivor was left to to mourn and grieve. Without meaning to, she orchestrated the creation of Superman, a living symbol of Hope.
Considering Death has wings and is a cousin of Lucifer, it actually makes sense that the Lucifer TV series appeared to have merged her with Azrael the angel of Death and turned her into Lucifer’s sibling.
As the embodiment of Desire is one of The Endless (one of Death’s actual siblings), it actually seems even more fitting. (”What do you Desire?”)
Death made an appearance in Lucifer’s solo comics.
Death appeared in Lucifer Volume 1 issue 25 and 26.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Neil Gaiman’s version of Death is actually a very well loved comic book character and is probably the most popular character in all of Sandman lore.  There are people who would argue that she is more popular than Morpheus (Dream AKA The Sandman), himself.
Aurelio Voltaire even wrote a song about her for a Neil Gaiman tribute album called “Where’s Neil when you need him?”  The song is called Sweet Death.
youtube
He also wrote a song from Lucifer’s point of view called Almost Human (on the album of the same name.)
youtube
Death was even the narrator of a safe sex / AIDS awareness pamphlet published by Vertigo comics in the early 90s that even featured her demonstrating how to properly put on a condom using a banana provided by John Constantine.   It was called “Death talks about life.”  It’s now available as bonus material in the Death Deluxe edition collection.
Here’s hoping that if the Lucifer TV series is picked up and Azrael (based on Death of The Endless) makes her appearance that she’s a little more accurate to her personality of the comics than poor Cain was...

recommended digital releases, march 10th
a large majority of the music i listen to these days is done at work through a premium spotify subscription. the hardest part seems to be trying to remember when an album i’ve been anticipating finally comes out on whatever random friday.
i figure i’m not the only one so every friday i’m aiming to post five new releases from the past week (or so) as well as five recent releases from the past couple months that are available through spotify (and presumably the other streaming platforms).
new releases from the past week (or so):
bill botting and the two drink minimums "better friends" on fika [spotify, bandcamp] bill botting was a member of allo darlin' and his first album under his own name applies their indiepop template to a country bar band. the two drink minimums back him up featuring members of the wave pictures, allo darlin', and owl & mouse.
tony malaby, mat maneri and daniel levin "new artifacts" on clean feed [spotify] another week, another release featuring the cello of daniel levin. paired (trio'd?) here with tony malabi's saxophone and mat maneri's violin it makes for another interesting jazz trio exploring elements of contemporary classical music.
elliott smith "either/or (deluxe edition)" on kill rock stars [spotify, bandcamp] "either/or" was a big deal when it came out in 1997 and twenty years on its mythology has only grown. at the time when most songwriters were hiding in bands (or at least band names) elliott smith released a dozen tender songs under his own name that nodded towards both nick drake and the beatles. the intimate shows on this tour showed elliott at his best and five live tracks are included here as a bonus along with a handful of outtakes.
uv-tv "glass" on deranged [spotify, bandcamp] the debut album from florida's uv-tv is straight out of the slumberland school of punky, distortion-fueled indie pop taught by black tambourine or joanna gruesome.
when nalda became punk "those words broke our heart" ep on shelflife [spotify, bandcamp] fifty years from now we're going to look back and wonder why people were recording albums when it's finally become clear that the EP is a more interesting and sustainable format for active bands. the new EP from the spanish band when nalda became punk recalls the more twee moments of the c-86 movement (like close lobsters and the darling buds) with synthesizers and jangling guitars.
slightly older stuff:
betty davis "the columbia years 1968-1969" on light in the attic [spotify] before her string of gritty funk full of sexual energy and inuendo in the early seventies betty davis recorded a pair of sessions for columbia records- one produced by miles davis and the other arranged by hugh masekala. her dream backing bands on these sessions drew from miles' band (herbie hancock, john mclaughlin, larry young, wayne shorter and harvey brooks), jimi hendrix's rhythm section (mitch mitchell and billy cox) and the (jazz) crusaders. six months after the physical release, it's finally hit the digital services!
julie doiron and the wrong guys "homeless" single on wrong guys [spotify, bandcamp] julie doiron hasn't been a part of anything 'heavy' since her days in eric's trip ended twenty years ago. her second single with the wrong guys (possibly in advance of a full album) finds the band amping up 'homeless', which isn't far from a solo julie doiron song. the b-side 'farther from you' is a lot heavier and reminds me bardo pond if they upped the tempo.
lambchop "is a woman (deluxe edition)" on merge [spotify] lambchop's 2002 album "is a woman" was the followup to their breakout "nixon" album but for my money it's the stronger of the two. it sees its first american vinyl release this month and the accompanying digital version is expanded with eight tracks from the session that previously appeared on tour cds or as bonus tracks on foreign releases.
gregg turner "chartbusterzs!" on feeding tube [spotify] gregg turner was an original member of the los angeles punk band angry samoans. his more recent work is loose garage rock that recalls jonathan richman, yo la tengo and the velvet underground. after a few listens i was not terribly surprised to discover he was also a rock journalist for creem back in the 70's and 80's.
vagabon "infinite worlds" on father/daughter [spotify, bandcamp] i waited a couple weeks to mention this album as i knew i'd be seeing vagabon opening for allison crutchfield last week. "infinite worlds" uses a wide pallette to convey lætitia tamko's intimate songs. combining full band arrangements, electronic samples and acoustic guitars (often in the same song) make for album that never stays in one place too long. ps- the live show ups the urgency of these tracks and is worth experiencing.

New This Week 11.17.08
Conspicuously missing from this week's list of hot new music releases is the latest album by up-and-coming pop star Kanye West--whose long-awaited new album 808s & Heartbreak is, not to worry, coming next week!
Why has it taken so long? Experts agree that West's recent pronouncement that he will "go down as the voice of this generation" might be one very significant reason!
According to one informed observer, the press has yet again blown the lovable West's innocent claims well out of proportion! Because West, whose devotion to higher education has played a part in the nomenclature of all his previous works, made that statement in reference to the petri dish he was holding in his right hand! And it contained a hearty colony of drosophila melanogaster--or common fruit fly--all of whom strongly feel West to be the dandiest vocalist they've heard in their entire lives! But no one reported that, did they?
Sorry, Kanye--but once again, the press wins and you lose! Can't wait to hear the new album, though!
Tumblr media
Beyonce: I Am…Sasha Fierce (Music World/Columbia) A boldly titled album--after all, at least some percentage of Beyonce fans will refuse to purchase it because of its confusing title--but as always, a masterwork beyond reproach! It's a great time in music history for all of us: While Kanye West proclaims himself the voice of a generation, the much more attractive Beyonce announces that her career role model is Barbra Streisand and she is aching to play the title role in the inevitable upcoming Wonder Woman movie! Heck, aren't we all? Deemed by the label as "her most personal, reflective and revelatory collection to date," this record coincidentally arrives prior to the singer's starring role in the films Cadillac Records and Obsessed!  Clearly she is going down as the voice of this generation! Do you think there will be a fistfight?
Tumblr media
Nickelback: Dark Horse (Roadrunner) In many ways the voice of a generation, Nickelback represents everything that is great about today's record business! They sell tons of records, they are loved by fans and loathed by critics--and if you ran into 'em in a bar you would avoid eye contact with them in case they were panhandling! For a band with their sales track record, naming a new album after former Beatle George Harrison's less-than-successful former record label might seem a bold move; as would, for that matter, actually being from Canada! But with Mutt Lange's sterling production, such great tracks as "If Today Was Your Last Day," and a legacy that is spoken of with hushed, respectful whispers in parts of Alabama and Cleveland, this is clearly the Nickelback record of a lifetime! Maybe even a mammal's!
Tumblr media
David Cook: David Cook (19 Recordings/RCA) Holy triple threat! First Beyonce, then Nickelback, and now the winner of this year's American Idol competition? Why doesn't everyone else just give up? So let's compare this album to the one released last week by Idol arch-rival David Archuleta! Both are by guys named David, both are by guys who made their careers on a TV show, and both are being released in the compact disk and digital download format! Additionally, when removed from their protective cases and bundled with fishing tackle into cylindrical lots of 50, both would hit the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean at the same time if released from a fishing boat simultaneously! My vote? Heck, they're both the voice of a generation!
Tumblr media
Dido: Safe Trip Home (Arista) For the longest time during the recent presidential election I was waiting for somebody somewhere to make the inevitable "take the `L' out of Palin" joke, but tragically, it was not to be! I think precisely the opposite when it comes to Dido! Frankly I'm glad she's back--word is that posing for this album's cover shot was fraught with difficulty! With the assistance of producers Jon Brion, her brother Rollo, and the remarkably named Citizen Cope, Dido's made a third album that may come to speak for an entire generation! Plus, the CD comes with four Dido postcards! Count me in!
Tumblr media
Mudvayne: The New Game (Epic) While some of us remember with affection the Golden Age of Mudvayne--when its members wore makeup and called themselves Chud, Guug, Rud, and Spug and passports were perhaps predictably hard to come by--there's no denying that this rockin' combo from Peoria are the voice of a new generation! Intriguingly, their former "tough" exterior is roundly rebuffed with this latest album, which reportedly is devoted to the age-old game "Pin The Tail On The Donkey" and features such tracks as "A Cinderella Story" and their loving ode to the Burger King franchise, "Have It Your Way"! If they're in your town, invite 'em to a Sunday brunch with your pastor and start talking business!
Tumblr media
The Doors: Live At The Matrix 1967 (Rhino) Long bootlegged but never sounding as good, these gigs--now finally available commercially--are an eye-opening and curiosity-satisfying glimpse into the Doors during the earliest stage of their career. Recorded in the course of four nights at San Francisco's Matrix, just a few months after the release of the group's first album, the band runs through much of that album's material and tracks soon to come, including "My Eyes Have Seen You," "People Are Strange" and even "Crawling King Snake." While fidelity isn't top notch, it's far better than anything released previously--and an excellent document of the band just stretching out and gigging rather than coping with the enormously legacy that would soon be theirs as the voice of a generation! Welcome and highly recommended but…no nudity!
Tumblr media
Belle & Sebastian: The BBC Sessions (Matador) One of the best bands of the last decade, Belle & Sebastian have released a flood of superb albums, singles, EPs, vinyl LPs, and probably cassettes as well! This collection, which documents the group's BBC exploits since 1996, comes in regular and "deluxe" servings--single and double CD--and is the sort of thing you'd want to have in your house and perhaps even play on occasion. It's quite good! Featuring a batch of material that only the group's staunchest fans have likely heard, it's simply the best representation yet of the high standard that have made Belle & Sebastian the voice of their generation! I'd buy two!
Tumblr media
Sammy Hagar: Cosmic Universal Fashion (Loud & Proud/Roadrunner) The charismatic Mr. Hagar was of course a longtime member of the less-interesting version of Van Halen--the one that recorded the famous For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, a disc from which this new effort takes nominal hints--at least initially! Featured guests include his former Halen buddy Michael Anthony, Matt Sorum, Billy Duffy, and a cadre of aging Republican senators fascinated by Hagar's "red rocker" nickname and  his defiant classic "I Can't Drive 55"! In the world of David Lee Roth replacements, Hagar stands head and shoulders as the true voice of a generation!
Tumblr media
Shontelle: Shontelligence (SRP/SRC/Universal) She's gorgeous, she's from the West Indies, and she uses only her first name! She's got a great hit called "T-Shirt"! No one knows if she likes Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon"! Her debut album features tracks with great names like "Plastic People" and "I Crave You"! Is it any wonder that those in her homeland of Barbados consider her the voice of a generation? Also, she's cute!
Tumblr media
Il Divo: The Promise (Syco/Columbia) "We still get nervous about what the reaction will be like when we release something and how people will perceive the new record," confides Il Divo's Seb--but worry no more, Seb! It's the best Il Divo record yet! Featuring "The Winner Takes It All (Va Todo Al Ganador)" and "Amazing Grace," The Promise is a dream come true for an entire generation of Il Divo fans worldwide! Still, scattered accusations of their being a "better-groomed Nickelback" are alarming!
Tumblr media
Blake Shelton: Startin' Fires (Warner Brothers Nashville) Reports are that this a great record, but here's a hint: If you live in LA, walking into a record store this week and telling clerks you're interested in Startin' Fires might be deemed problematic!
