Please reccomend me podcasts UwU
Oh my god this is going to be so boring. I listen to exactly two (2) podcasts.
The first one is The Adventure Zone. I picked it up during the pandemic and listened while playing Viva Piñata. The first campaign Balance was amazing but it’s a slow start. The second campaign, Amnesty, is a friendlier place to start with the bits already kinda knowing the deal.
The second podcast I listen to is Office Ladies. Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey break down The Office episode by episode and interview the cast. It’s just super chill and I listen to it on the way to work usually.
Audio mediums are a bit tricky for me as I don’t always pay complete attention so I don’t tend to gravitate toward much aural media but those are my two.
#ask ffs#I’m so boring when people ask for media I feel like#I can recommend books all day but music and podcasts and movies I’m like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#I tried to listen to the parks and rec podcast and didn’t like it

well, here we are! june basically flew by and it was a little rough, but we’re back with some long recs on cool things i’ve read/listened to/watched, and i’m about to force everyone to sit down and listen to my sleepover-esque ted talk in which i give unwarranted and unasked for rec lists. so here we go!
kdrama:
while you were sleeping
okay, so i tried to watch this kdrama when it came out in like...2017, i think? but for some reason, i wasn’t able to get past the first episode. i don’t really know why? because it’s so beautifully shot, and i super love the premise, which is basically this girl and this guy are somehow able to see things that are going to happen in the future...but only in their dreams. this whole kdrama really handled the plot super well--each episode honestly felt like a movie in itself, and the filming was just stunning, and i think this has to be one of the most visual kdramas i’ve ever seen. each character is also super interesting and complex on their own, and i really loved seeing such a strong cast of characters interact with each other in this world.
i think the only slight downside of this kdrama was that i couldn’t really get invested in the romance? i’m not quite sure why--i found both lead actors’ performances wonderful, and don’t get me wrong, i did think they were cute together as the drama went on, but i still couldn’t find myself buying into the romance until maybe relatively late in the drama (like...ep 11 or so? ep 16 was honestly when i realized that awww, wait, they’re actually super cute). but then again, i feel like the writers weren’t really prioritizing the romance either--i think they really wanted us to think about the beauty of dreams and redemption and how everyone can touch another person’s life in some significant way, so i can’t really be mad about it!
but anyways, overall i really enjoyed this kdrama and watched it all a lot faster than i thought i would! SOLID music, beautiful cinematography, good acting, mostly good writing, and some really memorable characters! def. a must-watch if you love suspense, aesthetics, and some wonderful characters.
the ghost detective
i’m someone who doesn’t like horror or scary things at all, but i was so intrigued by the plot and whatever material i saw on tumblr, and...of course, choi daniel, lee joo young, lee ji ah, and park eun bin. honestly, this is just a really wonderful and really underrated cast, and they really all brought out their a-game for this 32-episode supernatural / thriller / horror drama. basically, this kdrama follows the story of a young woman who’s trying to figure out who murdered her younger sister...and of course, there’s something supernatural going on.
honestly, this kdrama was such a ride. i loved the crime-solving aspect of it, and i was really in love with the interactions between all the characters, esp. that of eun bin and daniel’s characters. (guys...they’re so ride and die for each other. there’s also so much yearning. so much yearning in this kdrama, it just about killed me--)
the villain was absolutely, appropriately, elegantly creepy, and like...scary beyond belief. basically, the villain (lee ji ah’s character) feeds her victims these harmful thoughts and ultimately get them to kill themselves. it’s sad and haunting, especially when you see that the victims tell their victims “don’t listen to the bad things. try only to listen to the good things”. and...yeah. themes of how to handle all of these bad feelings inside of you really came through in this kdrama, and there were a lot of themes of suicide and the kind of rage and sadness that comes with that. (also! if you’re a fan of lots of angsty/whumpy situations....this kdrama definitely does not hold back with all of your fave whump/angst tropes! literally! every! episode! i! had! to! lie! down! because! too! powerful!)
school 2013
(aww, look at this precious cast…as though they didn’t all make me ugly cry at least five times—)
yeah, yeah, yeah, i’ve talked about this kdrama ad nauseum, and i know i watched it last month, but as i was studying for the lsat, i really, really, really needed some comfort. most notably comfort re: studying life, academics, how difficult it is to study but also be uncertain of your dreams…and if you are certain of your dreams, how that sometimes requires studying but that just makes life all the more overwhelming…can you tell i’ve been thinking about this a lot
i’m not going to ramble more about this kdrama considering i already have done so multiple times, but i enjoyed this rewatch and honestly,,,my love for this show has just grown even more. there’s a good reason why people consider this a comfort kdrama, because. i consider myself deeply comforted. also, i’ve been listening to the ost for the whole month. it’s become a problem. but sometimes. sometimes you need to listen to songs that feel like someone’s patting you on the head and telling you don’t give up, set down your burdens, don’t think you’re alone and dream whatever you want to dream, go wherever you want to go. i’ll stop talking now, but god. when i say that i think everyone who has ever felt incredibly tired by work or school and just wished for someone to give them a big hug either then or now...god. this is just one of those kdramas that i think honestly touched so many people’s lives, and i’m very grateful for the cast and crew and writers for ever bringing this story to life. :’) (god, okay, now i’ll stop talking before i make myself cry i’m fine this is fine)
your honor
so, i watched this kdrama thinking that it would be light and funny given that yoon shi yoon is the main male lead, but boy was i wrong--don’t be fooled by these happy little faces, this kdrama is heavy. this kdrama is about a young man (with a criminal record) who winds up impersonating his twin brother, who happens to be a judge. we also have a trainee who, after seeing the legal system fail her older sister, is on the rise to dispense justice through the courts the best she can.
honestly, the first few episodes were rough, mostly because of the content. big trigger warning for rape, violence, and sexual harassment at work. this kdrama really didn’t hold back when it came to addressing how the very people who use the law can also be the very same people who manipulate and abuse it. because of that, i found this kdrama incredibly powerful. that said, it certainly had its lighthearted moments too.
overall though, i liked this kdrama. the main characters were incredibly complex and genuinely the type to make me believe that for all the injustices in the world, there are still and always will be people fighting for the right thing. as someone who wants to enter the legal field, this kdrama was just uplifting. i was so blown away by the absolute rawness of the main two leads, esp. yoon shi yoon, who i’ve only ever seen in super lighthearted kdramas. so this was a really interesting change of pace, and i genuinely enjoyed watching this!
waiting for love
so this kdrama is just two episodes, and what’s better is that it’s available on youtube! it’s about two college students--a young woman who’s been hurt by falling in love with jerks now just wants to date, not really fall in love...and a young man who’s excellent at giving dating advice except he’s afraid that he’s never going to actually fall in love, so he just dates a girl for the sake of dating.
now, i kinda thought that this show was going to be kinda lighthearted, a little shallow--but it was weirdly...comforting? idk, i found myself liking it a lot more than i thought it would be. this is far from the perfect kdrama, and i kinda wished that we got more than 2 episodes because i think some of the plot points could have been better expanded, but...there were genuinely a lot of scenes that made me think a bit more about what it actually means to be in a loving relationship--like how it’s not enough to just put on a happy smile and eat meals together, but like...you know. there has to be trust and actual liking and also, yeah, maybe a bit of frustration in order to actually know whether a relationship is real or not. and given that the characters were all discussing the pressure on getting married and romance esp. when you’re in your twenties...idk. makes you think about are you dating someone for the sake of appearances? or do you genuinely...like them?
there was also quite a few tropes that i personally adore in this kdrama, which helped balance out the stuff i found more tiring. there was a lot of the “right person, wrong time” stuff going on (you really want the two main leads to get together after a certain point, and you just keep holding your breath whenever they walk past each other and beg please please please let it be this time...), and also that good old “two strangers fall in love with each other purely over writing to each other” (god. first the half of it, then me & au, then greenhouse podcast...something about this trope huh). that said, there were def. some parts that made me “:////” because some of the characters were kind of frustrating, but i’m gonna chalk that up to good writing since i think i was mostly mad about how i knew people like some of the characters lol. overall, i think this might be at least semi-enjoyable--it’s probably not something i’ll watch again, but it def. made me mull over what it means to actually be in a loving relationship, esp. if you’re in your twenties and everyone around you seems to be in happy romantic relationships/getting engaged and whatnot.
movie:
columbus
i’m a firm believer that there are some movies that are meant to cheer you up, some movies meant to make you cry, and then there’s some movies that are just meant to...sit with you. and this movie is definitely one of them. this story follows casey, a high school graduate, and jin, the son of a famous architect. the two of them are both so incredibly exhausted with their lives (casey with her constant worry about her mother, who’s a recovering drug addict; jin with his surface-level lack of concern for his comatose father). in their small town of columbus, indiana, the two of them bond over architecture and just. being quietly there for each other.
this movie’s been compared a few times to lost in translation in the sense that there’s this not quite romance between the two leads, who have a bit of an age gap (john cho and haley lu richardson have about 20 between them!). to be honest, i didn’t really get the sense that there was supposed to be a romance. if anything, it just felt like...two really lonely people finding each other. definitely not a simple friendship--definitely not a familial kind of relationship, definitely intimate.
idk. i think this movie might not be for everyone--i definitely agree with a lot of past reviewers that this movie is on the slower side. there’s some stuff here about complicated relationships with parents, a lot of cool architecture, really beautiful shots...and overall, it’s just...quiet. it’s lovely, and i can’t really stop thinking about it. it’s subtle, bittersweet, and oddly compelling. might not be the kind of thing you’d want to watch in the middle of the day, but if you’re a little sad and in the mood for something not to necessarily lift your spirits but...at least acknowledge them and sit with you, then...this is the movie to watch. idk. i felt kind of crummy the day i watched this movie, and i felt as though someone just sat next to me on a park bench until the sun went down. (mayhaps specific but hush, i’m writing this right after finishing this movie, so i’m...feeling a certain way.)
wish dragon
i watched this movie right after watching columbus because a) decided i was in the mood for something lighter, and b) i learned that john cho?? voiced?? the dragon?? (caroline your crush on john cho’s jumping out this month...)
but anyways! i loved this movie a lot. it was so satisfying? like, just narratively speaking? and the animation was wonderful and also weirdly smooth and satisfying, and there were a lot of funny and touching moments. this movie’s about this young man named din who stumbles upon a magical teapot that holds the wish dragon long--long has to grant din three wishes, and yes, i know, very aladdin, but that said, this movie has so many original twists that it feels weird to call it an aladdin retelling. it really did feel like a movie completely on its own, which i applaud the writer and director for!
i don’t want to spoil too much of this movie, but something i really enjoyed was that din’s main wish is just to see his old childhood friend again. idk, i think we all have that one friend from when we were really little that we miss--and this movie really dug into that, as well as themes about parents wanting to do the best they can to provide for their kids, and!!! and long the dragon gets his own storyline and amazing character development too!!! i was honestly just amazed at how this movie fleshed out the characters so well and had so many wonderful themes that just made me tear up. guys. this movie’s great. highly recommend for its wonderful characters and the power of friendship. just a grand old time in general. :’))
searching
yeah...yeah, i wasn’t kidding about my crush on john cho this month. yes, i watched three of his movies within 24 hours. this movie is about david kim who’s looking for his missing 16 year old daughter, margot. this film is honestly noteworthy for many reasons, one of them being that the entire movie is told through like...a laptop screen, as in we kind of follow david’s frantic search through facetime, facebook, tumblr...which i honestly didn’t think i’d be into, but whoo boy, i was wrong. it just added to the whole addictive quality of this movie, as it usually does when it comes to anything from the thriller genre.
but besides this just being a straight up addictive thriller with absolutely mouth-dropping twists (but like...good twists, and smart twists, good god--), this movie was just...touching? there’s so many themes related to what grief does to a family (because we learn within the first 10 minutes that the mom died due to cancer), and there’s just...something really fragile about relationships between surviving family members. i was absolutely blown away by john cho’s performance as a tentative and grieving widower whose world just absolutely falls apart in his search for his daughter. this movie was just so...real because of that. like, yes, this movie has all of the suspense that you would expect this kind of movie to have, but there was also just...so many beautiful themes about grief and how far parents would go for their kids and godddd yeah no i started sobbing when the movie ended. god.
also, my bias towards john cho aside, i...really loved his character. david kim is absolutely believable, and like? he’s not just the guy putting the pieces together--he’s also the guy who misses his wife and also the guy who wishes that he was there for his daughter. he’s also the guy who pauses and re-writes all his text messages because he’s trying to be a good dad. i feel like with a lot of these suspense / missing person movies, it’s really easy to have characters who are just the stoic alpha male types--and david kim definitely had his badass moments in this movie, but like...something i just loved was seeing the vulnerability that comes with...having a missing child. being a parent. god. this movie messed me up but in a good way. i can honestly say that this movie is now probably going to be one of my fave movies of all time. highly recommend, am literally obsessed with it.
book:
the seven husbands of evelyn hugo by taylor jenkins reid
ohohoho………where to begin with this book. this was one of those books where i was like “huh i kinda don’t understand why people are so obsessed with this book”, but then i hit like...page 20 or 30 and was like “oh god i Literally Cannot Put This Book Down Oh No” and wound up finishing it in like three days (mind you, i only read at like...midnight these days. i don’t understand why either).
i finished this book at like 2 am and promptly burst into tears because this was just one of those books. it follows the story of evelyn hugo, a famous hollywood actress from the 60s or so and onwards. known for her intense beauty and her seven husbands, she’s now giving an exclusive interview to the young reporter monique grant, where she’s about to tell all about her life. this book had me dropping my mouth multiple times, and i think tjr can spin one hell of a story, with so many good twists and turns and intensely memorable characters. by the end of the book, i was actually mad that evelyn hugo wasn’t a real person, because i, too, fell a little in love with her and thought, i want to actually watch her movies. i want to learn even more about this remarkable woman.
but alas! she’s not real, so i don’t get to see her accept an oscar or look up all the tabloids about her and her seven husbands or her speculated (and very, very, very real) relationship with celia st. john. basically...i just loved this book. the last line made me smile and laugh and cry a little bit (actually...cry a lot), and y’know...i’ll admit it’s not totally perfect, but i’m glad this book exists, and i’m glad that even though tjr isn’t bi herself, was very adamant in this book about bisexuality being real. just. like. god. once again. mad that evelyn hugo isn’t real. it’s fine, she’s real in my heart.

jonmartin voice requests transcript
i don’t think anybody’s made a transcript of the requests from the gaming & giving stream yet so here it is. i cut out the first few minutes where they’re just getting ready and a few minutes at the end, but otherwise it’s the full thing
ALEX (out of character): So, we are going to be going through a bunch of reads which are what people have been, basically providing us to say. I’ve not seen these beyond checking that I can open the document, so this is sort of, a bit of a blind read on my end.
JONNY: I’ve read through some of them and they are awful.
ALEX: (laughing) Fabulous. Great. So with that in mind, I’m now opening it up. Um... okay, cool, so for the first one, you- I need to interrupt you. (frustrated) Oh, fine.
JONNY: Okay, so this is from donut_bridgetrose. (spooky voice) The Magnus Archives is a podcast-
ALEX (ooc, very loud and overenthusiastic): FUCK, DUDE! YEAH IT SURE IS!
(Jonny starts laughing out of shock)
ALEX: I thought that was an appropriate level of enthusiasm.
JONNY: (laughing) Sorry, I didn’t expect you to put quite so much pepper on that one!
ALEX: I mean, I don’t know what to say like-
JONNY: No, fair enough, fair enough.
ALEX: I’m just reading with (???) intent. I’m up next, who’s this one from?
JONNY: Uh, reatx.
ALEX: Okay, given the writing of this one, I’m going to assume this is actually intended as a Martin one, not an Alex one, so I’ll do it as such. (clears throat to do Martin voice, disappointed tone) Jon, please j-just stop reheating tea in the microwave!
JONNY: The next one is from sofairycakes. Again, I’m gonna assume it’s a- like, I think these are all pretty much JonMartin ones, to be honest. I don’t think anyone’s actually said- the thing is, Alex, I don’t think anyone actually cares what *we* say.
ALEX: (laughs) That’s true. So I think we need to do this one like-
JONNY: No one’s paying to have, like, Alexander J. Newall say something, you know?
ALEX: It’s fine, I’ll pay me. Okay, I think we have to do this simultaneously.
JONNY: Yeah, because it says “both.” Or... let’s- do you want to go first?
ALEX: I don’t know if it is- no, let’s say it together, let’s say it together. Let’s try and sync up.
JONNY: I don’t- I don’t think they want it simultaneously. I think what this means is they don’t mind which one’s which.
ALEX: Very well, in which case then, I’ll go first.
JONNY: Okay.
ALEX: And I’ll do it as a Martin one, then. (clears throat, Martin voice, soft) I-I’ll take care of you.
JONNY (Archivist): (hoarse, upset voice) It’s rotten work.
ALEX (Martin): Not to me. Not if it’s you. (ooc) There you go.
JONNY: Okay. Ac3yspac3y-
(Alex laughs)
JONNY: Or, ace 3 space 3.
ALEX: Okay, great.
JONNY: (clears throat)
ALEX: Yeah, really get the-
JONNY (ooc, looking straight at the camera): Four rats in a trench coat is the best Peter Lukas, and we love him.
ALEX: (laughs) Direct to camera address, very nice, okay. (as Martin) Jon, why isn’t Lonely Eyes *our* ship name? (ooc) Who was that from, by the way?
JONNY: That was from compostwitch. Next one is from theoceaninmotion, there’s a whole bunch for you.
ALEX: Ooh, yeah. Oh, my formatting’s terrible, I’m gonna do the unspeakable, I’m now just gonna start looking at the text instead of your face. (computer screen shines in his eyes) Ooh, that’s bright, maybe not, maybe not. Okay, gimme a second to just mess with my formatting because I can’t see nothing.
JONNY: There’s very little like streaming to make you realize quite how absurdly pale you are after a year of just being inside.
ALEX: Outside is bad time. Right, okay, I’m gonna give this a go, then. Forgive me if I hesitate here, I’ll do my best. (clears throat) No, don’t-
JONNY: This is from- sorry. This is from theoceaninmotion.
ALEX (Martin): No, don’t click- Peter, just-just give me your phone, I’ll get the emojis set up, but I-I *refuse* to help you understand Elias’s texts any further from here. There are just some things I don’t need to know! (grossed out noise)
JONNY: This is from joeytwoeyes.
ALEX: I’m gonna assume Martin as well. (as Martin) Mm, assassins killing Elias? My favorite!
JONNY: This one is from nagev.
ALEX: Uhh. Alright, I think this one might be for me, like not a Martin one. (deep sigh) Harrison Campbell is my favorite author.
JONNY: This is one for me from riotcontrolcamp. (as the Archivist) Sometimes people will ask me about my life aspirations and I’m like, I don’t know, I thought I’d be in a car with my hand out of the tail light by now.
ALEX: (laughs) I like that one.
JONNY: This one’s from Cassidy.
ALEX (Martin): Forgive and forget? (very quickly shifts into a hysterical voice that’s very much not Martin’s) No! Resent and remember! (cackles evilly)
JONNY: From cucumberkale, this is a two hander.
ALEX: Oh, yeah, I’m first. (as Martin) I have done nothing wrong ever, on my life.
JONNY (Archivist): I know this and I love you. (ooc) Good little Parks and Rec reference there.
ALEX: Oh, yeah!
JONNY: From the bluescapegoat.
ALEX (Martin, mischievous): Jon, uh, did you hear about the explosion at the cheese shop?
JONNY (Archivist): What? What cheese shop?
ALEX: (wiggling eyebrows) Yeah, da brie [debris] was everywhere.
JONNY: (deep sigh) This apocalypse has officially gone on for too long. (ooc) This is from alfcommittingcrimes.
ALEX: (laughs) (as Martin) Hello, Jon. Apologies for the deception, but I would like to remind you I love you. (laughs)
JONNY: Aww.
ALEX: Cute reference.
JONNY: Um, this one’s from Monty. This isn’t actually-
ALEX: This is more of an instruction.
JONNY: They haven’t scripted anything, yeah. Um, okay. (as the Archivist) Martin, I’m very sorry for ever saying that I hated your tea.
ALEX (Martin): It’s okay. Some things are more important than tea. (ooc) There you go. I thought I’d go sincere-
JONNY (ooc): Oh no! Martin’s been replaced! (Alex laughs) Anyways, this one is from tomakeitworse and it’s for you, Alex. Well, as Martin, not as you.
ALEX (ooc): I mean it’s wrong, but okay. (as Martin) Oolong is the best tea.
JONNY: From shikashaman. (statement voice) Statement of Benedict Avalanche regarding clown milk. Statement begins. Honk.
ALEX: (laughing) I think that’s a call back to earlier this stream, so. (makes ok symbol) Very class act.
JONNY (ooc): One from ladymystree for me. (Sasha giggling in the background)
ALEX: I’m hearing giggling on your end, I think someone’s enjoying themself.
JONNY: No, it’s fine. They’re doing a cryptic crossword and I’m sure they’ve just stumbled across a-
ALEX: It’s really cryptic. Really cryptic. Yeah, it’s a cryptic giggle, alright. Carry on, then.
JONNY (Archivist): Ceaseless Watcher, evict this feline, Her Serene Highness The Empress Nyx from out of the *goddamn* Christmas tree.
ALEX: (laughing) I like that one.
JONNY (ooc): This is from myth_ac. (as the Archivist) Martin and I have this connection where we finish each other’s-
ALEX (Martin): Sentences!
JONNY (Archivist): Don’t interrupt me.
ALEX (ooc): (laughs) I quite like that one as well.
JONNY (ooc): Yeah, I don’t know what that one’s from, I recognise it. But it’s, uh, redderie. (as the Archivist) I’ve been asked why I changed my opinion on poetry. I do not know this. This information is unattainable such as it is. Not even my endless resources could solve such a mystery. No, I did not fall in love with a poet on purpose, next question. (Alex laughs) (ooc) This one’s from coinmaster. Uh, and it’s for you, Alex.
ALEX (Martin): Thank you so much for asking, Jon. My ideal date, uh, would be getting home after a long day, curling up next to a roaring fire and listening to Rusty Quill Gaming. It’s-it’s a podcast, it’s distributed by Rusty Quill.
JONNY (Archivist): Oh, yes, I’ve heard of it. It’s not very good. (roasting) Ohhhh!
ALEX: But it does have a Creative Commons attribution non-commercial sharealike 4.0 international license, so that’s quite cool, too. (ooc) (laughs) I may have riffed there, I apologise.
JONNY (ooc): It’s fine, it’s fine. We’ve said what they’ve asked us to say, anything additional is- that’s bonus. (Alex laughs) This one is from mstars, for me to read in statement voice.
ALEX: Oh! (laughs hysterically, tries to compose himself)
JONNY (statement voice): Why are you so far away in Galactonium? Hey, won’t you save me? Hold me, maybe? I just want to be your little clone baby.
ALEX: (laughs) And that’s in my head for the rest of the day.
JONNY (ooc): This is for you. I refuse to listen to it. I’ve- too many people have told me it’s good. Which means that-
ALEX: Automatically, yeah. Understood.
JONNY: Well, no, it’s just, like- I don’t want it stuck in my head. I’m aware, if I listen to it, it’s in my head forever, and I can’t risk that.
ALEX: You don’t want him- you don’t want Tim getting- well, Tim and Ben, you don’t want them living rent free there.
JONNY: They can’t win!
ALEX: Understood. Okay, in that case, then. (as Martin) Sorry, Elias, I can’t hear you, there’s a panopticon in the way! (ooc) Fair.
JONNY: One from b_ees. Another for you.
(TheBrothersMeredith in the chat: Coward)
ALEX: Oh no.
JONNY: Mm-hm.
ALEX (Martin): (grunt) I’m trying to sneak around in the Lonely, but I’m-I’m dummy thicc and the clap of my ass cheeks just- it keeps alerting the Eye!
JONNY: One from thequack04. (as the Archivist) I have had a very long day, I am very small, and I have no money, so you can imagine the stress I’m under. Square brackets this is a John Mulaney quote close square brackets. (Alex laughs) (ooc) One for you. Uh, from misssunflower94.
ALEX (ooc): I’m gonna assume this is for actually me.
JONNY: No, I think it is for Martin, because remember, Martin’s opinions on poetry.
ALEX: Uh, no, fair, actually, no, I take that back. You are correct, you are correct. (as Martin) I don’t know, I just- I’ve always found Oscar Wilde to just be a bit... overrated?
JONNY: One for me, from awildmeerie. (as the Archivist) Hello demons, it’s me, ya boy. (Alex laughs) (ooc) Um, (stumbles over the name) emperiocism. Sorry for that, emperiocism. Can Jonny sing/speak in his most serious Archivist voice? (serious Archivist voice, speaking) Now, this is a story all about how my life got flipped turned upside down, and I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there, I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air.
ALEX: Oh, don’t- (incomprehensible frustrated noises) god.
JONNY (ooc): From marsmagnusandkbouchard, this is for you.
ALEX (Martin): (very angry) Fuck being the bigger person, I’m just- (feral) I’m just gonna start biting people!
JONNY: Excellent. One for both of us from zestymayos92.
ALEX (ooc): (laughing, tries to compose himself) (as Martin) The world ended, and that is super not poggers.
JONNY (Archivist): You’re right, Martin, very not poggers indeed. (ooc) One from catskeleton for you.
ALEX (ooc): That’s just- oh. (as Martin) Roses are red, violets are blue. I’m definitely not a ghost, and Jon, I love you.
JONNY: I have a really difficult one- this anonymous one is difficult because it says “in the style of Sailor Moon” and I’ve not seen many anime, um, animi, sorry, in my life.
ALEX (ooc): The plural is anipodes.
JONNY: And Sailor Moon is not one, so I have no idea what-
ALEX: As far as I am aware, if you want to do it representatively, your clothes need to fly off in a large elaborate explosion and be replaced with some kind of dress-based armor. But that may not be feasible.
JONNY (Archivist): (very awkward) I am the pretty Avatar who fights for the Eye and for knowledge! I am the Archivist, and now, in the name of the Ceaseless Watcher, I’ll punish you! (ooc) I... I don’t know.
ALEX: I think that might have been actually pretty decently close. It’s been a few years since I watched a Sailor Moon, so don’t hold me to that though.
JONNY: I’ve only ever seen silent gifs on... your Tumblrs or your Twitters. Anyways, this is from theraccoonfriend. (as the Archivist) Get out of my swamp. (ooc) Uh, from Kath, for you, Alex.
ALEX (Martin): I’m fine! Stop asking!
JONNY: From sunnyjordie, for you, Alex.
ALEX (Martin): Hey, would you help me out? I’m very gay and a few- and I’d like a few dollars. (ooc) I’m gonna do that again, I think I screwed it up. (as Martin) Hey, would you help me out? I’m very gay and I’d like a few dollars.
JONNY: Square brackets this is a John Mulaney-
ALEX (Martin): Square brackets this is a John Mulaney quote close square brackets.
JONNY: Um, from Linothy, for both.
ALEX (Martin): Please, pleeeease stop drinking tea by just putting the bag in your mouth and just chugging hot water.
JONNY (Archivist): I’m *cultured*, Martin. (ooc) And dang3rgrang3r, or dang 3er grang 3er. Uh, for both.
ALEX (Martin): God, Jon, why don’t you ever wear your own clothes?
JONNY (Archivist): I like your sweater! It makes me feel...
ALEX (Martin): It makes you feel like a thief!
JONNY (Archivist): No, it makes me feel *safe*.
ALEX (Martin): Aww, Jon...
JONNY (ooc): One from voidbean.
ALEX (Martin): I’m sorry, you were STABBED??
JONNY (Archivist): *Lightly* stabbed, I didn’t want to frighten you. (ooc) I think that’s a Brooklyn 99 one.
ALEX (ooc): Yeah, so do I, actually.
JONNY: Sarafifi24.
ALEX (Martin): Press X to pay respects.
JONNY: So from alfcommittingvoicecrimes, they’ve asked “sing chorus of Pump Shanty.” And the thing is, if you want to hear me singing the chorus of Pump Shanty, that is available on Bandcamp, Youtube, and Spotify. So, Alex, why don’t you do it?
ALEX (ooc): Okay, I have no idea so I’m gonna take a random stab in the dark.
JONNY: I’m very excited to hear it.
ALEX: With a tune that doesn’t even scan in terms of meter.
JONNY: No, like just- it’s a folk tune so just sing it like a folk. Sing it to an old folk tune.
ALEX: ...Yes.
JONNY: You know, an old folk tune.
ALEX: (to a tune that’s definitely not Pump Shanty) Pump me boys, let’s a-fly, down to hell and up to the sky. Bend your backs and break your bones, we’re just a million miles from home. (cringing) I have no idea what that should be-
JONNY: (trying not to laugh) Brilliant. No, that was it. You got it.
ALEX: Oh, wicked. I was worried for a moment.
JONNY: No, that was... uncanny, to be honest. We’ve got a few more that are from Nobles donations, so these don’t have specific donor names, so we can just go back and forth.
ALEX: The first one’s as Wilde. (as Wilde) I am so clever that sometimes I don’t understand a single word of what I’m saying.
JONNY (Archivist?): Blartin, that is, Paul Blartin Martin Cop is on his segue and eye ass Jon is sitting on the handlebars. He is facing Blartin in a koala-esque embrace which is not quite an embrace but rather for structural support. His ass eyes are out and alert. He knows all. Petty theft perishes under their collaborative iron fist.
ALEX: (laughing incredulously) Okay!
JONNY (ooc): Do you want to do this one? I think- yeah.
ALEX: Okay, okay, sure. (deep breath, as Martin) Hey, you can do this. It’s been really, really rough, but you can do this.
JONNY (Archivist): Working at the Magnus Institute was like a four year game show called “Do my friends hate me or do I just need to go to sleep?” but instead of winning money, you lose your bloody soul. (ooc) Okay. (as the Archivist) You’re a child, an infant. Your mocking is thus infantile. He’s not my boyfriend. This man is more to me than you could dream. He’s the moon when I’m lost in darkness and warmth when I shiver in cold, and his kiss still thrills me after a millennia. His heart overflows with the kindness of which this world is not worth of. I love this man beyond measure and reason. He’s not my boyfriend, he is all and he is more.
ALEX (Martin): You’re an incurable romantic.
JONNY (Archivist): (next request) He thinks I don’t notice, but the bodies in the hallway speak a clear language. Death is all around us, no one is safe. The signs all point in one direction: Martin’s totally sus.
ALEX (Martin): (noises of disbelief) O-okay, come on, I am innocent! How could you even think that??
JONNY: Martin was ejected.
ALEX (ooc): (laughs) I think that’s it.
JONNY: Yeah, I think that’s the list.

What are your other interests aside from choices? Favourite movies, TV shows, music?
Hello Nonny!
You ask such a GREAT question. I could probably talk you ear off for days ... but as neither of us have that kind of time, I’ll try to be more brief.
When I’m not reading choices fanfiction or playing choices, my other interests include (but are not limited to): teaching psychology and Western Religions, Jamberry, painting, reading books for upcoming book clubs (which I’ve been bad at since I joined this fandom - oops!), talking to friends and family who live far away, journaling, listening to podcasts, yoga, long walks (which I call exercise), hiking, watching TV (or occasionally a movie), sleeping, and life coaching.
I don’t know how to be bored, can you tell?
And I told you I could talk your ear off.
I’m currently reading “Crazy Rich Asians” and loving it. I cannot wait to go see the movie with my book club ladies.
Here is a list of the podcasts I listen to:
By the BookForever 35Happier with Gretchen RubinHeathenHidden BrainHow I Built ThisInvisibilianote to selfOn BeingPlanet MoneyPod Save AmericaPod Save the PeoplePop culture Happy HourRadical CandorRadiolabMore PerfectS-TownScience Vs.SerialStart UpTED Radio HourThe Accidental CreativeThe Psych FilesThe West WingUp First
And I’ll be starting “Conversations with Alanis Morisette” soon.
If anyone has podcast recommendations, I’d love to hear them!OH! I also really love subscription boxes! FabFitFun, Trendy Memo, and Causebox are my current favorites. #addicted
My favorite movies are “The American President” and “Beauty and the Beast” ... I’m sure more current movies are also great, but these just have a special place in my heart.
My favorite TV shows ... I love watching TV shows. I’m so behind on anything current though! (For the most part) I really love my shows to have a comedic flavor, so my favorites are Friends, Parks and Rec, 30 Rock, Will & Grace, Frasier ... I’m currently watching all off Supernatural. I may NEVER catch up though - ha!
And music - I couldn’t provide you a list if I tried. It’s much much much easier for me to say that I just don’t like it when music SCREAMS at me. No SCREAM-O. Everything else though - I am down. Country? yes. Musicals? Yes. R&B? Yes. Pop? Yes. You see the pattern by now. ;)
Oh, and while you didn’t ask, I’ll answer anyways - I have a very unhealthy obsession with the color “Mint Green”. And by unhealthy I mean, I will want things when they are in the color mint green and not want the exact same item if it is not in the color mint green. I consider myself logical, but this defies all logic. Form and function should matter, and it does, it’s just that color is more important in ways that defy logic.
Thanks for asking, Nonny! I hope you found something we can connect on.

I’m glad to be home. Today was a long day. And I slept terribly last night. I was woken up by some people being loud outside around 130. And then couldn’t fall back asleep until almost 4. I listened to some podcasts and slept on the couch for a while. Eventually I got up and moved back to the bed and was asleep until 8. So yeah I wasn’t super pleased to be awake. But I was alright. There was an air quality waning because the easterly winds were blowing smoke from the wildfires. My allergies were pretty bad and everything was just a tiny bit hazy. Someone was coming to see my apartment this afternoon so I decided to clean. I vaccuumed and cloroxed everything. Felt good. I got a shower and dressed. I put to much blush in so I had to blend it out for forever. And my new blender thing is terrible. I tossed my old one a few days ago and the new one just doesn’t work well? And I don’t understand why. Annoying. I’ll keep trying it to see if maybe it just needs time but I might have to buy a better one. I ran over to the family dollar to get got dog rolls and then came home and had hotdogs for brunch. Well one hot dog cut in half in 2 buns. I tried to lay down for a little while but I never actually fell asleep. Just sort of rested and listed for a bit. I laid in bed for about an hour. Got up and put myself back together. Repainted my toes. And around 1 headed to work. It was a long day. I had a nice ride over. And helped Amanda get set up. She gave me a schedule for projects. It sounded fine. And at first it was. We went over to pick up the kids together. We had a new boy who was a bit hard to handle. But it was all good. We had snack and played a get to know you game. We did some free drawing and I worked on some prep for events this weekend. Mari, the other teaching assistant, came and so we all went to the park together. We had some tears but it was nice still once everyone had calmed down. We we were out there for like a half hour. And then back inside for art. This is were it got tough. We were doing still life drawings of soup cans and making slime. This didn’t go so well. One of the older students was my helper and she knew how to make the stuff. And then we had another assistant come. So I was running around putting out fires and making sure everyone was okay. But the slime wasn’t working. They were doing it with just tide and glue and it was a mess. Eventually everyone got a little bit of slime and got to help make it but we almost ran out of materials and it was everywhere and the littler kids didn’t like being dirty and didn’t understand that you had to kneed it to make it not goopy and just let it go onto the floor. And I just got very overwhelmed. Poor Ari, one of the kids, thought I was mad at him when I was just upset over the whole thing. So my teen assistant helped me out everything away and have the kids just play quietly. She did some prep and I cut paper pennant flags. It was just a lot. But we handled it and everyone seemed really happy in the end. The kids started getting picked up. With Ari being the last one. We ended ups sitting outside on the picnic chairs because it was cold and sort of boring inside since he didn’t want to make anymore art today. But he got picked up and I headed to the next thing. Over to the rec center. We had creation stations for the kids while their parents were in beginning of the year teacher meetings. We painted and made bracelets. I made leaf banners for the kids to paint on for fall. And then I colored on a coloring sheet while I talked to the little kids. They were all very sweet. I thought that was until 8 and I was dying. But it was actually only until 7. So we cleaned up and I got to go home. I got back here and my nose started bleeding pretty much right away. Once that was delt with I made a sandwich. And now I’m just resting. Taking off my nail polish. I accidently broke my little dish I keep my blender in so I glued that back together and then accidentally super glued my leg to the coffee table. Great. Amazing. I’m very much looking forward to sleep. I work a few hours tomorrow. But I’m hoping to get some packing done. I can’t believe in 2 weeks I’ll be out of here. Its scary and exciting and terrifying. But I’m happy. Its still bittersweet but it’s going to be good. Sleep well everyone. Be safe out there.

Massive Ask Meme
I was tagged by @grey-skies-full-moon
Rules: Tag 20 people ((That’s so many... I’ll see what I can do.))
Puttin’ this under a Read More because it’s hella long.
Your last:
1. Drink: A tropical punch-type juice.
2. Phone Call: I had to call my dentist to reschedule an appointment because my car died and I couldn’t get there.
3. Text message: DJ (s/o), I’m pretty sure.
4. Song you listened to: Uh... It might’ve been something from The Last Five Years, which DJ introduced me to. If I’ve listened to anything since then, I don’t remember.
5. Time you cried: Uh... huh. Probably within the last month or two, but I actually don’t remember. That’s a good sign. Gods, it’s nice to be back on my meds again.
Have You:
6. Dated someone twice: No. That is not a thing I do.
7. Kissed someone and regretted it: Nah.
8. Been cheated on: Not that I’m aware of.
9. Lost someone special: Yes.
10. Been depressed: Enough to be medicated for it.
11: Gotten drunk and thrown up: Once.
List 3 Favorite Colors:
12. Teal.
13. Gray.
14: Purple.
In the last year, have you…
15. Made new friends: A couple of acquaintances, but not friends.
16. Fallen out of love: Nope.
17. Laughed until you cried: Oh definitely. That happens all the time.
18. Found out someone was talking about you: I mean, friends making references to me and my existence maybe, but not gossip or anything. At least, not that I know of.
19. Met someone who changed you: I don’t think so...?
20. Found out who your friends are: I mean, I’m well aware of who my friends are.
21. Kissed someone on your FB list: I mean, DJ’s on my facebook list, so yeah, lol.
GENERAL:
22. How many Facebook friends do you know in real life: 99% of them. There are two that added me years ago that I just sort of added because fuck it, and we’ve literally never talked, but it’s kind of nice seeing how their lives are doing. I just haven’t had the heart to unfriend them after all this time.
23. Do you have any pets: Not anymore. My parents have a dog, and DJ has a cat, but I don’t have any pets that feel like they’re MY pets, you feel me?
24. Do you want to change your name: I mean... There are two that I would consider for very different reasons, but I’ve gotten so used to my name that switching now would probably be weird.
25. What did you do for your last birthday: DJ and I hung out and got dinner and stuff. My mom also used it as an excuse to have a cookout later in the month, lol.
26. What time did you wake up: I woke up several times last night. If you mean actually stayed awake, probably around 11 or so.
27. What were you doing at midnight last night: Watching Twitch or sitting on the internet, probably.
28. Name something you can’t wait for: The possibility of moving to Chicago.
29. When was the last time you saw your Mom: Last... Monday, I believe.
30. What is one thing you wish you could change in your life: Financial stability/security.
31. What are you listening to right now: DJ’s mom’s cockatiels chirping. Other than that and the ceiling fan in here, there isn’t really any noise. I WAS listening to a Rooster Teeth Podcast not too long ago while folding laundry, but then I moved to a different room, and haven’t put another one on yet.
32. Have you ever talked to a person named Tom: Yes.
33. Something that is getting on your nerves: Feeling frustrated and lost I guess, but that’s actually started to ease up recently as I’ve been slowly figuring things out. I’ve got a long way to go, but it’s kind of nice.
34. Most visited website: Tumblr, Facebook, Youtube, Twitch. I visit them all pretty equally.
35. Mole/s: Uh... A bunch. Two on my neck, a couple on my chest, several on my arms, maybe one or two on my legs, and one other one.
36. Mark/s: I’ve currently got some scars thanks to Nugget (DJ’s cat), but those’ll probably go away sooner or later, as with any other scars or bruises I’ve ever picked up. The only lasting scar I have is on the bridge of my nose. When I was 5 or so, I tried to feed my uncle’s Very Large Dog, Snowball, a piece of ham. He was very excited about the ham, and I was very small. Wasn’t his fault, and I never blamed him for it. Honestly, I’ve kind of grown to really like that scar. It’s distinctive.
37. Childhood dream: I wanted to be a horse until I was 5 and found out you couldn’t do that (lmao). I wanted to be a vet after that until I was 11 or 12 and realized I was very squeamish around gore. I wanted to be a zoologist after that all the way up until freshman year of college, after which my goals changed, and are still currently evolving. There was also DEFINITELY a point where I wanted to host my own Animal Planet show, a la Steve Irwin or Jeff Corwin.
38. Hair color: It’s currently a light/medium auburn. I tried dyeing purple over it, but it didn’t stick for very long. Naturally, it’s a medium/dark brown with some red in it.
39. Long or short hair: My hair is actually currently the shortest it’s been since 2008, and it’s still a little below shoulder length. I’m used to having very long hair, but my hair is prone to damage and split ends, and tangles, and is also very thin. Getting half of it chopped off has helped immensely. It looks much healthier.
40. Do you have a crush on someone?: Nah.
41. What do you like about yourself: Hm. I’m kind, thoughtful, generally try to be helpful, tactful, reasonably intelligent, and musically talented.
42. Piercings: None. Not really a fan of them, tbh. I think I’d look good with a monroe or madonna piercing, but it would irritate my gums too much.
43. Blood type: A negative.
44: Nicknames: Sabs is the only one I get even remotely regularly anymore.
45. Relationship status: Happily taken.
46. Zodiac: Cancer / Horse.
47. Pronouns: She/her, I guess. I probably wouldn’t really care about any of them, tbh.
48. Favorite TV show(s): Hm. Community, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Rec, maybe The Goldbergs, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls... There’s probably more. I’m not even going to include anime, because that list is way longer.
49. Tattoos: I currently have one on my left wrist. I think I’d like to get full sleeves eventually. I’m still planning out some of the designs. Also, you know, tattoos are expensive.
50. Right or left hand: Right.
51. Surgery: I’ve had x-rays, ultrasounds, dental work, but never a surgery. I’d like to keep it that way, but something tells me my dentist is going to harp on me about not getting my wisdom teeth removed.
52. Hair dyed a different color: I’ve been dyeing my hair since I was 11. I guarantee there are some people who’ve never seen my natural hair color.
53. Sports: I am Bad At Those.
54. Vacation: I’ve only ever been on a couple in my life (California to visit my aunt when I was 13, St. Louis in high school for the band/choir trip. Chicago every once in a while to visit friends, but I don’t know if I’d call that a vacation, per se). I’d love to go a TON of places.
55. Shoes: I’ve mostly been wearing flip flops lately, flats if I need to be dressy. But that’s because it’s hot and humid right now. Ohio air is like soup. It’s the worst. I prefer boots of all types, and some tennis shoes/sneakers.
56. Eating: I’m about to go make a leftover taco or two. I want to go get something somewhere, but... financial responsibility. *sigh*
57. Drinking: I had some juice earlier. Will probably have more, or water.
58. I’m about to: Go make those tacos I was talking about.
59. Waiting for: Things to finally start moving in the right direction.
60. Want: To win the lottery. It would fix 90% of my problems. Also, to find out what’s wrong with me, but the doctors’ appointments and lab work should solve that.
61. Get married: I’d like to eventually, but I’m in no particular rush. I got engaged once before, and it ended horrifically. I mean, I’ve certainly got high hopes for this one, but I, again, am in no particular rush.
62. Career: I do some freelance editing currently, but it’s not enough to pay the bills. I’d like to get into full-time editing, web development (which I’m currently learning how to do), or, ideally, being a full-time Twitch streamer would really suit me, but I like streaming just because. I would just like to do it more often.
WHICH IS BETTER:
63. Hugs or kisses: Hugs.
64. Lips or eyes: Eyes.
65. Shorter or taller: Taller, I guess? It really doesn’t matter to me either way.
66. Older or younger: Doesn’t matter, within reason.
67. Nice arms or nice stomach: Arms, maybe. Don’t super care about either.
68. Sensitive or loud: Sensitive, I guess.
69. Hook up or relationship: Relationship.
70. Troublemaker or hesitant: Hesitant. I’d rather not have to deal with cops, if at all possible.
HAVE YOU EVER:
71. Kissed a stranger: Once, that I recall.
72. Drank hard liquor: Yup. I don’t drink as much these days, but it’s still fun from time to time.
73. Lost glasses/contact lenses: I lose my glasses all the damn time. Accidentally left them at my parents’ house the last time I was over, so I’m gonna have to go get those back soon.
74. Turned someone down: Yeah.
75. Sex on first date: It has happened.
76. Broken someone’s heart: Yeah.
77. Had your heart broken: Yes.
78. Been arrested: No.
79. Cried when someone died: Very much so, even seven years later.
80. Fallen for a friend: I mean, that’s usually the case. I don’t tend to date people if I’m not already friends with them first.
DO YOU BELIEVE IN:
81. Yourself: That answer changes from day to day. It’s better than it used to be.
82. Miracles: Maybe? I’m not entirely sure. I don’t know the exact definition of what constitutes a miracle.
83. Love at first sight: I think people can have Interest at First Sight, or, like, I Think I’m Compatible with This Person Probably at First Sight, but true, actual, lasting love? No. That develops over time and requires work to sustain.
84. Santa Claus: St. Nicholas was absolutely a real person.
85. Kiss on the first date: Again, it has happened.
OTHER:
86. Current best friend: I have several. I know that defeats the purpose of a “best friend,” but I consider most of my close friends family at this point. I suppose I’d have to say DJ, in that case.
87. Eye color: Light grayish-blue. Some days it looks more one color than the other. Depends on what I’m wearing.
88. Favorite movie: Well, the only three movies I’m generally able to watch multiple times (and have) are Scott Pilgrim, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Repo! The Genetic Opera. I’ve also seen all the Harry Potter movies several times. There are a ton of movies I’ve enjoyed, though. I just usually don’t have the attention span to watch them.
tagging: @theifbaby @patillojack @gordona424 @octoberspirit @legendxofxzach Uh...I don’t know if I can think of 15 more. I’ll tag @nwinchester94 too, even though I haven’t heard from her in a long time. :(

bre’s big ol podcast rec list
heyyy everyone! so @bodhilukes asked for podcast recommendations on twitter and @czarrish and i immediately jumped on that. i was gonna make this list sometime this month away, and im super excited to do it! this is probably gonna get long so under the cut we go!
COMEDIES:
1. Hello From The Magic Tavern
Updates: Every Monday
Current # Of Eps: 101
General Length Of Eps: 40 mins to an hour
Synopsis: Arnie Niekamp fell through a dimensional portal at a Burger King in Chicago into the magical, fantastical land of Foon. He’s still getting a slight wifi signal from the Burger King, so he hosts a weekly podcast with his buddies Chunt (a shapeshifter who normally takes the shape of a badger) and Usidore, a wizard. They interview different creatures from Foon each week as Arnie tries to learn about Foon, while also trying to figure out how to get back home.
Notes: Okay, I have to say it. This is my favorite podcast. I love it to absolute death. It 100% got me into improv comedy and comedy podcasts, to the point where that’s pretty much all I listen to anymore. Arnie, Matt, and Adal are sweethearts and the show is so genuinely funny and interesting. Please give this one a listen.
2. The Adventure Zone
Updates: Every other Thursday
Current # Of Eps: 57
General Length Of Eps: An hour, but there are a few that are two or three.
Synopsis: The McElroys play Dungeons and Dragons. But it’s also so much more than that.
Notes: Okay you all know how much I love this podcast. I love it to death. I’m still only like halfway through it but god it’s amazing and I’m so angry I didn’t start it earlier. All of the characters are amazing and Griffin is truly such an amazing storyteller. It’s so much deeper than you would originally think, and it will make you cry like a baby. Please listen to The Adventure Zone. Holy shit.
3. CoolGames Inc
Updates: Every Friday
Current # Of Eps: 45, with some CGI Jrs mixed in.
General Length Of Eps: An hour (CGI Jrs are 20 mins)
Synopsis: Polygon’s Nick Robinson and Griffin McElroy take listener suggestions and make video games out of them.
Notes: These are my favorite soft boys, and they are just too funny. Some of the games they come up with are genuinely good games that you’ll be upset don’t actually exist, but most of them are just silly goofs that are guaranteed to make you laugh. This podcast single-handedly got me through last semester, so shoutout to Nick and Griffin for that. You should also check out CoolGames Inc Animated!
4. Improvised Star Trek
Updates: Every other Monday
Current # Of Eps: 157, with a BUNCH of bonus eps mixed in
General Length Of Eps: About 30 mins for regular eps, 5 mins for bonus
Synopsis: These are the voyages of the starship Sisyphus, Starfleet’s worst crew. Captain Julius Valentine Baxter and his crew, including First Officer Corbomite Hayes, Science Officer Crick Watson, Ensign Laserbear, and Chief Medical Officer Zarlene Zonaldson, just to name a few, get into way too much trouble out in the final frontier.
Notes: I started listening to this because of Matt Young from HFTMT (and because I got super into Trek), but god I fell in love with every single character. Quite a few guests from HFTMT are regulars on IST, and their shenanigans are just amazing. If you love Trek, you’ll love this.
5. Siblings Peculiar
Updates: Infrequently
Current # Of Eps: 29
General Length Of Eps: 30 mins
Synopsis: Adam and Sarah Peculiar (pronounced Pec-U-lAr) are trying to figure out what happened to their parents, paranormal investigators that suddenly disappeared 10 years ago. They interview conspiracy theorists of all sorts as they try to gain any information they can about their parents’ whereabouts.
Notes: I started listening to this one because of Adal Rifai from HFTMT, and I’m glad I did because he and his sister are so funny together. Their conspiracy theories are so off-the-wall hilarious (there’s a whole episode about Grease being propaganda where they interview the real creator of Grease), although I will say the comedy might not be for everyone as it can veer a little into the offensive (but it’s satire and I personally love it). It’s less frequent now because Sadieh got cast in a tv show, but I still recommend listening to it!
DRAMAS:
1. Welcome to Night Vale
Updates: Bimonthly, on the 1st and the 15th.
Current # Of Eps: 103
General Length Of Eps: 30 mins
Synopsis: Cecil hosts a radio show in the mysterious town of Night Vale, where abnormal things like Glow Clouds, angels, ominous dog parks, and floating cats are commonplace.
Notes: We’ve all listened to WTNV at this point, right? Or at least heard of it? Besides an old Fringe podcast I used to listen to back in like 2008, this was the first podcast I ever listened to. Cecil’s voice is just incredibly soothing, I find this podcast really helps when I’m super depressed, and I used to stock up on eps specifically for those times.
2. The Black Tapes/TANIS
Updates: they used to be weekly but they look pretty infrequent now
Current # Of Eps: TBTP has 24, TANIS has 25, both with several bonus eps mixed in
General Length Of Eps: 30-45 mins
Synopsis: TBTP is about journalists Alex and Nic investigating The Strand Institute’s Richard Strand and his various black tapes that may be evidence of the paranormal. TANIS is the spinoff, where Nic focuses more on real life conspiracy theories as he tries to find the location of the mythical TANIS.
Notes: I’m not gonna lie, I did drop both of these podcasts and I’m not sure if I will pick them back up. But the first season of both were incredible, and @czarrish introduced them to me and they really got me into podcasts. In my opinion they both declined in quality during their second seasons, but that’s just my opinion!
3. The Penumbra Podcast
Updates: I think it’s on hiatus? But I think it was bi-weekly at one point
Current # Of Eps: 19, with bonuses mixed in
General Length Of Eps: 30-50 mins
Synopsis: The Penumbra is the grandest hotel this side of Nowhere. The series mostly follows Detective Juno Steel trying to solve mysteries, but they’re all stories you recognize told in ways you won’t expect.
Notes: Again, I’m not gonna lie, I’ve barely listened to this and I really don’t know that much about it. I had to take a lot of the synopsis from the actual one on their website. But the first two episodes were awesome, so I feel confident in recommending it. I think they might be rebooting it?? Idk, you might want to ask @czarrish for more details.
4. Alice Isn’t Dead
Updates: Season one wrapped in Jul 2016 and it’s been on hiatus ever since. edit: s2 is starting soon!
Current # Of Eps: 10
General Length Of Eps: 30 mins
Synopsis: Alice is a truck driver who’s driving across the country in search of her missing wife, who she thought had been dead but now has reason to believe otherwise.
Notes: This is from the creators of WTNV and features the voice of Jasika Nicole, who I know and love from Fringe but also does the voice of Dana on WTNV. It’s spooky but not too much so, and I’ve admittedly only listened to 3 episodes but just like Cecil, Jasika has a wonderfully soothing voice.
MISC:
1. Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men
Updates: Every Monday
Current # Of Eps: 148
General Length Of Eps: An hour
Synopsis: Basically what it says on the tin: two guys explain in detail everything that has happened in the X-Men universe, starting at the very beginning.
Notes: Again I haven’t listened to too much of this, but it’s really fun. I’ve loved X-Men for a while but I always get confused with all the retcons and different verses and stuff, but Jay and Miles do a wonderful job of explaining everything without making it confusing.
2. Terrace House Mafia
Updates: Infrequently
Current # Of Eps: 14
General Length Of Eps: 10-15 mins
Synopsis: Polygon’s Nick Robinson and his roommate Chad watch Terrace House: Boys & Girls in the City and talk about it. That’s it. But it’s cute as fuck.
Notes: I absolutely love listening to these guys talk about Terrace House because they’re going through the exact same journey that I (and probably everyone) went on when I first watched it. It’s quick and super fun to listen to.
3. The Probe
Updates: Was weekly, but s1 wrapped in November so it’s been on hiatus
Current # Of Eps: 8
General Length Of Eps: 30 mins
Synopsis: A satirical take on news podcasts, two journalists follow the election at Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School, and learn about the country’s political climate along the way.
Notes: Again, I started listening to this because Matt Young from HFTMT produced it, but I really enjoyed it beyond that. If you like HFTMT, you’ll recognize a lot of the Chicago-based actors in The Probe. Also I wasn’t exactly sure where to put this so I just put it in MISC cuz it’s like... definitely funny and improvised but also it’s a little serious, maybe? Idk, it’s satire. And it’s great satire.
I’m also gonna include the podcasts that I’m subscribed to but I haven’t actually started listening to yet. They piqued my interest but I just haven’t gotten around to listening to them yet! So here we go: The Bright Sessions, Darkest Night, The Hilarious World of Depression, Hollywood Handbook, Homecoming, Lore, My Brother My Brother And Me, Reply All, The Room Where It’s Happening, Wolf 359, With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus.

Is it me? Is there something wrong with me?
Don’t worry this isn't’ about depression or anxiety. (I already know my brain chemistry is f*ck up, it’s what my medication is for) No, I’m worried that there is something wrong with my sense of humor.
Let me layout the context for this. Back at home we don’t have TV, we dont’ have netflix, hulu, or a lot of that stuff. We get some things from our library to watch, so I don’t live in a cave. Most of my entertainment is from books, podcasts and youtube. (Tumblr too, but I’m specifically talking about things longer than a dumb memed knock knock joke)
A few times a year I petsit for a family for a few days, up to about a week. They have TV, Netflix and Hulu so I get access to things i don't’ get to watch usually. Fun right?
Except... I keep picking things to watch and finding myself put off by things. I’m grossed out by the blow job jokes, put off by the weird racists jokes, not laughing at the ‘boo hoo you millennials have to worry about peanut allergies in your kindergartens’ and unsettled by incest jokes.
If it’s a TV show its something people have been raving about for years, and I finally go to watch it, and I don’t really find a lot of it funny. Like I get what the joke is supposed to be, I just am at best bored or at worst frustrated by it.
I want to say I have a sense of humor. I find lots of things to laugh at, and I don't’ feel like I’m being offended by the things in question. (Usually) I don’t consider disagreeing with the point a joke is making to be ‘getting offended.’ I find plenty of things funny that a more conservative audience would be extremely offended at. I listen to a few podcasts that if you took something they said out of context, it would make everyone involved sound like awful human beings, but it’s practically satire in some parts.
So I don’t get why I keep flipping through, say the stand up comedian section of netflix and end up turning off nearly everyone I do attempt to watch. A female comedian makes a joke basically saying that early in a relationship a girl will give a guy a blow job for nearly any reason. “Oh honey you know clean dishes turn me on” sort of thing. Okay, I can chuckle a little at that I suppose. I mean I don’t really do the sex thing myself, as an asexual, but whatever. I do enjoy gorgeously drawn 2D smut, like the stuff found at filthyfigments (but 3D/real people sex, turns my stomach. Is the squick factor simply due to my asexual status or, is it due to ‘trauma’ I’ve had in the past? I have no freaking idea)
So I don’t immediately check out if I hear a sex joke. It’s when the comedian starts making sound effects for it, that I start to disengage. In fact, quite a few comedians I came across that I didn’t find completely hilarious like to make gross sound effects.
Which, look, fine. I admit. I do not like gross out humor. Doesn’t matter what the gross humor is about. Eating rotting food, bodily functions, just, if its the grossness that is the joke and it’s supposed to gross me out. I do not like it or find it funny. This would be fine if it was just a small matter of taste, but it is super common.
I’ve tried to watch a bunch of other comedies I’ve been recommended. Like Park & Rec, The Office (US TV), and Modern Family. Funny enough all those have one thing that I just can’t get into, and that is the ‘documentary’ angle. Sorry guys, it bothers me a lot. Also too many of the jokes I just didn’t like. :/
Okay, fine, fine. Everyone has different taste.
But.... is it just me?
I like karmidic comedy. Where the character fully brought the situation on themselves, only helped by other characters/friends that end up in their own karmidic comedy situation that overlaps with each other somehow in unexpected fashions.
But... it seems that I am stupid for wanting that. For liking that.
Comedies like characters that get fucked over by selfish characters. Comedies looooove stupid characters that get in stupid situations because they are stupid. Where the entire ‘comedic’ situation could have been averted by a single character giving a single fuck for two seconds.
I like comedy that is either completely absurd (Futurama) or that I can relate to on some level.
but again, maybe I just am not really.... I just..... am I that weird? Is my life, thoughts, feelings so abnormal that I can’t even find things to relate to in comedy? Maybe it’s my anxiety after all. I don’t want to watch tv shows and movies, where the joke is how awkward the characters are, or the situation is.
When every joke seems to be about having sex with the wrong people(Oh no I slept with my ex, my cousin, my boss ect.), or drinking too much (don’t hangovers suck *cheers from audience*), drug experiences, crazy college parties, or weird work place shenanigans, I feel like I must be missing something.
Not in the my depression makes everything lame way, but the way when someone is telling a story about a funny thing that happened, but when you look at them confused they end it by saying ‘oh you would need to have been there to get it, it was really funny.’ Is that what life is supposed to be like? Is that why everyone finds it funny? Do they understand and relate to all those experiences? Because I don’t and I’m tired of nearly comedy being about those things, but I’m afraid that it is just me.

I know, I know I have been gone for a while. I took a bit of a sabbatical, because I was having a hard time coming up with content and then would go into a shame spiral etc. Blogging stopped being fun and became another thing to beat myself up about, if you haven’t picked up on it I might have a slight self esteem issues… but I am back and applying less pressure on myself because ultimately I enjoy blogging.
Anyway! I wanted to take a few to talk about some of my favorite Fictional Escapes (see what I did there?) from 2017. Some I blogged about already, some I have not. Even though I have it in a list format, it is not a ranking. THAT WOULD BE LIKE ASKING ME TO PICK A FAVORITE CHILD! Here are 10 favorite things from 2017:
s1. Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I blogged about this book, so I wont spend a ton of time on this one, my feelings on this book are well documented here, on Twitter and Facebook. BTW Taylor Jenkins Reid is a mega sweetie to her fans, I suggest following her. This book was absolutely amazing! I read it in like a day. I say read, but more devoured it. The book takes you through 2 stories of very different women and how their lives connect. It is beautifully written and so well done at times I forgot I wasn’t reading an Autobiography.
2. Reincarnation Blues
Another one that I haven’t shut up about since I read it. Milo is the oldest soul in the universe, living nearly all of his 10,000 lives. We are taken through several of his lives as he tries to reach perfection, as well as his time between lives where he is in love with a Death who goes by Suzie. This book is magical, fun, and at times heart breaking. This book is reminiscent of Douglas Adams. The many different worlds Michael Poore has built in just one book is astounding.
3. Twin Peaks the Return
What can I say about this show? Honestly I am never so happy to be confused then when watching Twin Peaks, and the Return took that up a notch or. Kyle MacLachlan playing several hard roles so perfectly, you forget its the same actor. Dougie Jones absolutely broke my heart on a weekly basis, while the bad Cooper was scary as hell. The fact they were on Showtime, they were able to get a lot darker then in the original show. Plus we so got this beautiful sigh-worthy moment:
#BigEdandNormaForever
4. The final season of the Mindy Project
Mindy, Mindy, Mindy. There is nothing that Mindy Kaling has done that I didn’t love, this show included. I was hooked from the very first episode. The characters, the story line, the jokes, everything was perfect. Season 6 was the shortest and one of the best seasons of the show. They wrapped up everyone’s story line, with out every feeling like everyone was short changed or rushed. With out spoiling the overall story arch, I was nervous about how the show would end, the direction it seemed to head and they nailed it, with out sacrificing the character’s emotional growth as I feared they could. This show goes down as one of my all time favorites with 30 Rock, Parks and Rec and Scrubs. I will miss this show so much!
5. Season 3 of Playing House
Ugh! I guess technically I should have titled this one “The final season of Playing House” but I’m not there emotionally and it is too soon. I knew the Mindy Project was ending, this one was ripped from my arms by the cruel USA. This show. THIS SHOW YOU GUYS! I have so many thoughts and feelings about it, and have blogged about it in the past. The entire show is amazing, but season 3 was something truly special. Season 3 had Emma being diagnosed with breast cancer and shows her and Maggie battle it together, in a story line “ripped from the headlines” as Law and Order likes to say. You see in reality the lead actresses Jessica and Lennon are best friends, and Jessica did have breast cancer. The way the show handled the story line was perfect. It was touching and informative. It was sad at times with out ever actually feeling too heavy. They educated us on cancer treatment options, with out ever pulling you out of the story or feeling preachy about things. Damn you USA Network for canceling it! If you have On Demand, I could not recommend watching this show enough.
6. Womp It Up! Podcast
What? Jessica and Lennon get 2 spots on your list? Yes they do, because they are amazing people who rocked my 2017. Womp It Up! has been around for a while, but I didn’t discover it until this year, and luckily for me I didn’t have to wait a year and half between episodes like other fans. Womp I Up! is a comedy podcast that was birthed from Comedy Bang Bang characters. Jessica St Clair plays Marissa Wompler, a 17(ish) year old, not very well adjusted, student at the Marina Del Rey High School, the podcast is her senior project. She is doing some alternative learning in her school’s program called STARS, ran by her teacher and lets face it best friend Charlotte Listler, played by Lennon Parahm. Every week there is a new comedian on playing a person in the Marina Del Rey community. My favorite has been Andrew Daly as Joe Bongos, the Health teacher who has some interesting ideas on what to teach the kids.
7. Oh, Hello on Broadway
Oh, Hello got it’s start on the Nick Kroll Show, where Gil Faizon and George St Geegland had a prank show on public access channel in New York. Their one prank was ordering a tuna sandwich with way too much tuna, ultimately getting the person say “That’s too much tuna”. What was the prank show called? Too Much Tuna of course. Somehow, in Nick Kroll and John Mulaney’s brilliance they were able to make a super successful Broadway play based on these two dirt bags.
Gil (a writer) and George (an actor) have been best friends and roommates since the 1970s. They decided to write an autobiographical play telling their story. The brilliance of this show is the play that is happening around the play. It gets pretty meta at times, often Gil and George stop the actual play to have their own interactions, generally it is Gil giving George notes on how he is doing in the play. The sheer detail that has gone into this show is mind boggling. I can’t even describe the layers of the play. I highly recommend checking it out.
8. Wonder Woman
Let’s not get into a DC vs MCU argument here, generally I am an MCU fan and haven’t been too excited over the last few DC movies, but this one. I will admit was a little nervous when I first saw Gal Gadot was cast as Wonder Woman, but she won me over immediately in Batman vs Superman. I was still cautiously optimistic for the Wonder Woman movie, but it came out better then I imagined. In my opinion it was just awesome (I am aware of the issues people had with it, but to me the good outweigh the bad). I enjoyed the hell out of it, it made me laugh and cry. I also enjoyed the feel of it, different then the other super hero movies, it felt more like a war movie. If you haven’t seen it, check it out!
9. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and Thor: Ragnarok
I decided to combine these two into one, because well I didn’t want this list to be 3/4s super hero movies. I could also write a book on my feelings for these two movies and their directors. Guardians was written and directed by James Gunn and Thor was directed by Taiki Waititi, a kiwi writer and director known for his work with Flight of the Concords, What we do in the Shadows to name a couple. Also if you’re looking for a sort of weird but sweet movie, check out Eagle Vs Shark.
These two movies have a bit of a rag-tag team thing going on, and both delve into family relationships. They are both visually stunning, and laugh out loud hilarious, (yes I know that is a problem some people have with Marvel, but I love to laugh and they are right up my alley). Their similarities are one reason I decided to group them together. The first Guardians became my favorite Marvel movie about 10 minutes into it, and was thrilled that James Gunn actually made something better. I have always had a soft spot for Thor, and been sad at the state of the movies he’s had. I left Ragnarok thinking they finally gave him the movie he deserves, also Jeff Goldblum at his Goldbumiest.
My other favorite part of both of these movies, is they seemed to fix the villain problem. Hela and Ego managed to be interesting and complex. They didn’t seem to fall flat like others have in the past.
These two movies are all in all a good ass time!
10. Hamilton the Musical, paired with Hamilton the book
I know, I know. It’s based on true events, but some of it is changed for dramatic effect. I am so late to the game on Hamilton, but I just recently got Spotify Premium which let me listen to the soundtrack in order… and I am HOOKED. I decided to check out the biography the musical was based on by Ron Chernow. Combining the two adds a lot more depth to the play, certain lines in songs make sense. There is so much drama in Hamilton’s life, so much that the play never even touched on.
If you want to add to your Hamilton experience, read the book as well. Honestly, it makes the entire experience so much better.
Thanks for reading everyone!
Check out my top 10 from 2017 list of my favorite Fictional Escapes. I know, I know I have been gone for a while. I took a bit of a sabbatical, because I was having a hard time coming up with content and then would go into a shame spiral etc.
