Deercember Day Fourteen: Barasingha Deer | Wild Strawberries
The barasingha (Rucervus duvaucelii), sometimes barasinghe, also known as the swamp deer, is a species distributed in the Indian subcontinent. Populations in northern and central India are fragmented, and two isolated populations occur in southwestern Nepal. It has been extirpated in Pakistan and Bangladesh, and its presence is uncertain in Bhutan. The scientific binomial name commemorates the French naturalist Alfred Duvaucel. The swamp deer differs from all other Indian deer species in that the antlers carry more than three tines. Because of this distinctive characteristic, it is designated bārah-singgā, meaning "twelve-horned" in Hindi. Mature stags usually have ten to fourteen tines, and some have been known to have up to twenty. In central India, the herds number on average about eight to twenty individuals, with large herds of up to sixty, comprised of twice as many females as males. During the rut, they form large herds of adults. The breeding season lasts from September to April, and the single-calf births occur after a gestation of 240 – 250 days from August to November, with the peak in September and October in Kanha National Park. Compared to other deer species, barasingha are more relaxed when it comes to guarding. They have fewer sentries and they spend most of their time grazing, unlike deer species like chital or sambar. More information here.

20 questions for fic writers
Thank you for the tag, @discordantwords!
1. How many works do you have on AO3? I have 10 as of now (7 for Sherlock and 3 for Harry Potter, though the HP fics were either begun or completed in 2012 (first posted on ff.net)... in other words, before I knew about JK's raging transphobia. I finally finished a HP WIP in 2020 that I had abandoned years ago, after my resulting disillusionment, because I decided that my work didn't deserve to be in vain. I'm so glad I did!
2. What's your total A03 word count? 168,333
3. What fandoms do you write for? On AO3, just BBC Sherlock and HP, though I have Smallville, Supernatural, and even a Gilmore Girls fic on my ff.net account (the earliest of them written in 2006) that I will NOT be linking here. 😂
4. What are your top five fics by kudos? (Since I've only been posting Sherlock fics on AO3 since September 2021, there's not a ton of variation between these):
The Waning of Withdrawal
Of Sweat, Sociopathy, Scars, and Secrets
Never Been Better
Pressure Points
Genius is a Star Whose Light (is Soon to Sink in Endless Night); I think I may change the title soon since it's so unwieldy)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes! Mainly because I love when authors reply to mine - it acknowledges my gratitude and can open a line of communication. Plus, I just get so excited by every single comment notification that I need to squee and send hearts to the sender.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? None of my Sherlock fics have angsty endings, though that was my original goal for Never Been Better. It originally ended with Chapter 1, but I added two more chapters upon popular demand to fix things. :) It's a classic Sherlock-leaves-John's-wedding-early fic, so I'd intended to explore what may have happened within canon as sort of a missing scene/character exploration. Ultimately, however, I decided to throw a bone to poor Sherlock and disregard canon events.
However, my Harry Potter fic The Burn of the Phoenix, which I migrated to AO3 in 2020 after it's huge reception on ff.net back in 2012 (it's a 13k-word oneshot with 273 reviews and 951 favorites, though I'd definitely not write it the same way today), is definitely angsty. The end is hopeful, but ultimately... I killed Harry Potter. So. 😂 The ending, as it doesn't miraculously entail Harry coming back to life, can certainly be considered angsty as well. The entire fic is from Dudley's perspective as he learns of Harry's death (an alternate version of canon) and attends his funeral.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? As described above, all of my fics have happy endings! Though I'd say the one that's most unabashedly happy with minimal lingering pain and turmoil is Cold Inside. Genius comes close, but Sherlock is horrifically injured even despite happy news that comes in the last chapter so there's still an uphill battle ahead.
8. Do you get hate on fics? No, though I did get a very direct comment on The Waning of Withdrawal - the first time I ever wrote smut - that said the following (the "At all" was particularly harsh):
"I loved the fic and the way you formed everything with the comforting, and the understanding, the guilt and stuff and angst in the main part of the fic but I'm not a huge fan of how much detail went into their love part and stuff.. Not saying it's bad! I'm sure some people absolutely love it but I'm personally not a huge fan of the sex scene. At all."
(Luckily, two other commenters jumped in to my defense!) It seems innocuous enough, but I'd included an A/N that said it was my first time writing a love scene, despite it being brief, so "please go easy on me". The rating and tags were appropriate, too, so it seemed a bit out of the blue. That one little comment knocked my confidence for a while and made it impossible for me to re-read the fic without cringing.
9. Do you write smut? Just two of my Sherlock fics so far are rated E for smut. The Waning of Withdrawal, as described above, and Cold Inside, which has a lengthy sex scene in Chapter 4. It was so much harder than I thought to write - there's nothing quite like meticulously editing writing comprised of graphic depictions of anal sex, haha.
10. Do you write crossovers? No, nor do I usually enjoy them. I really admire the creativity, but tend to prefer fics that are plausible and in-canon; it's just a preference (with exceptions, of course!) That being said, crossovers that could happen between comparable universes - such as Sherlock and Hannibal - really appeal to me in theory.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I'm aware.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? No, but I'd be so thrilled!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No, nor do I have a beta. I'm sure it could improve my work, but I feel horrifically self conscious during any editing process that involves another person. It's something I need to work on!
14. What's your all-time favourite ship? Sherlock & John and Arthur & Merlin are pretty neck-in-neck. I don't have many Merlin bookmarks, as it was my prior obsession before Sherlock, but I've been delving more into the Merlin fandom lately. Writing for it just seems harder for me - accounting for historical accuracy (though the show isn't historically accurate at all, it's just an entirely different universe) and the bounds of Merlin's magic would be tricky. Maybe one day.
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? HAHAHAHAHA so... I did use to write more than one fic at once, waaaay back in the day, but have long since learned my lesson. I refuse to have true WIPs anymore - I only develop one idea at a time - and don't even publish a story until it's complete or almost complete (and fully outlined). Why? Well, there's one WIP I will NEVER finish. It's a Supernatural fic on ff.net with 6 chapters (out of a planned minimum of 10), first published in March of 2007 and last updated in February of 2008. Ooops.
It most recently received a review in 2015, which reads as follows: "WOW! ...update any time soon?...PLEASE...k"
Yeah. So. Never again for me.
16. What are your writing strengths? Based on the comments I receive, I think my strengths are characterization and dialogue. Oddly enough, these are two of my insecurities, but I think that my hyperfixation on both (knowing that I need to consciously work on them) has led to vast improvement.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I often have a difficult time coming up with the initial premise, and am not nearly as creative as many of the writers out there I admire. Ideas usually come without me trying - such as late at night or in the shower - so I jot them down whenever that happens. That's all that seems to work for me. FTH was great in that it took a bit of the burden off and allowed me to elicit prompts from bidders instead.
I also struggle to weave incredibly complex stories. I don't think I'll ever be one of those writers who can write 100k-plus fics full of twists and turns. My plots tend to be more narrow, focused, and immediate.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? As cool as this is - and I may be able to do this with Spanish, as it was my university minor - I wouldn't want dialogue to read as clunky or unnatural to a native speaker or to impede the flow of the prose (I'd want to add translations when possible in parentheses so as not to discourage readers who are not bilingual, unless the dialogue is short and can be translated in an end note).
In Genius, I have excerpts here and there in Serbian, but I ultimately use English to express longer Serbian dialogue (between <brackets> rather than "quotation marks" to indicate the difference in language being spoken and with the acknowledgement that translations are never 1-1. For me, this also helped preserve Sherlock's personality and ensure it could shine through.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Smallville! Way back in 2006. It was terrible; I killed Clark in an alternate version of S5's Hidden. I'm not sure what used to be the appeal of character death to me. You'd never catch me writing it now.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written? It's hard to choose, but I have two answers for different reasons. The fic I'm most proud of writing is Genius. I worked SO, SO hard on the story outline, plot, and the symbolism and clues thrown in throughout. It's my longest and most complex story so far at 51K words, too.
The story I believe to be my best is Never Been Better; specifically, its first chapter. I don't think I've since written a more in-character version of Sherlock or a starker portrayal of his emotions.
I also have a huge soft spot for my Harry Potter fic The Truth at Last, which is the first fic I ever posted to AO3. It marks a huge improvement in my writing from when I first started it in 2012, as I was able to return to it in 2019/20 with a more mature perspective.
I'll tag anyone who hasn't yet been tagged and would like to join! (Sorry for the lack of creativity there - I'm always afraid I'll forget someone).

not here to tell you💔🫶
pairing : shane filan x fem younger sister filan!reader
summary : rylee filan, younger sister of westlife legend shane filan is dancing her last three dances on strictly come dancing as her last chance to win the mirrorball trophy. during her couple's choice, which was a dance dedicated to her and shane's deceased parents (as well as nicky byrne and kian egan's fathers), a sweet moment ensues between one of the judges and the filan.
warnings : slightly sad, mention of deceased parents, older brother x shane, strictly come dancing and winning strictly come dancing
a/n : this was originally taken from an old book of mine on wattpad and then i rewrote it for a one-shots book and now i'm writing it for tumblr. we love recycled works!
𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐰𝐨 | 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭
it was friday evening and the night before the final of strictly come dancing 2022. and, alongside rylee filan and her partner kai widdrington, all of the remaining couples were on the "it takes two show" to talk with the hosts, rylan and janette. talking about all things about their strictly journeys, their three dances for tomorrow night's finale and many more.
in her skin-tight maxi dress, heels and his button-down shirt, jeans and polished shoes, rylee and kai sat in their it takes two interview with rylan clark about their strictly journey. rylee was downright excited as was kai. however, he was a lot more emotional about the whole thing than he thought he would be. especially considering this time last year, whilst he was technically a 2021 finalist, he wasn't able to compete for the glitterball. and that was due to his celebrity partner, aj odudu's ankle injury. this meant that this was his first actual year going up for the glitterball trophy in the strictly come dancing final.
rylan had introduced their vt package for their strictly come dancing journey. and, in all honesty for the two of them, it felt so bizarre to be watching all of that content. from the last twelve weeks of their thirteen-week journey on the show together. they watched in complete awe and content as it all suddenly finished too quickly. it had now returned back to the duo and rylan on camera.
rylan smiled, "awe, that was amazing to watch, wasn't it? congratulations, you're in the final!" he cheered as rylee and kai chuckle as they hold hands, one leg crossed over the other
"how are you feeling after watching that?" he asks as kai immediately turns to rylee who giggles, responding
"umm, emotional, i feel exhausted *laughter*, i look like a mess. i'm sweating, i've recently just had to go and strap up my foot because it's still inflamed from the week before *giggles*. but, truthfully, i feel so grateful and it feels amazing to be in the final and have that video to watch back of everything we've done. it does however feel crazy because when we truly try to think about it, it doesn't feel like we've done a lot. but, then you show us that vt and we really have done a lot and, truly, it's been the best adventure i could have ever gone on. especially when i see just how far the both of us have come since the beginning. i mean, it's completely overwhelming but, i'm sure we can pull it together for our three dances tomorrow night!" rylee giggles, her smile bigger than it ever had before as kai nods his head in agreement
"let's go right ahead and talk about your three dances for tomorrow night then. you are doing the quickstep which was a very successful dance and it was also your first ever perfect score. as well as the earliest in strictly come dancing history *cheers*, yes, well done! and it's a dance that is very loved by everyone. and, rylee, i just want to bring up something that you said to janette last night and it was that you were going to be more sassier for tomorrow's performance. and, may i ask, how is that even possible because you were already so sassy and in character during the original dance *laughter*?" rylan pauses as rylee giggles as she shakes her head
"we first watched the dance back, kai and myself with my brother shane and his bandmate, kian i think the night before kai and i spoke with janette *giggles*. and both shane and kian agreed that whilst this was one of kai and i's best dances, i just needed to be a little bit more sassier and have a slight bit more attitude in the beginning and of course, i agreed. especially considering both shane and kian did a production of grease a couple of times in high school with mark, the third sligonian from westlife before it even existed. so, it's a tip i am willing to improve on if it means it gets kai and me closer to potentially winning. so, that's what i'll be doing tomorrow night *laughter*," rylee responds as rylan nods his head, not needing to question it again
"now, rylee, were you ever scared or unsure about joining this show, strictly?" rylan asks as rylee laughs, falling into kai who laughs as well
"oh, pff, yes i was. even though i did mention from the very start that i wasn't wanting to be terrified or what have you, it all kind of changed when we got to about week four. i suddenly got too in my head and i started to have these little pockets of moments of ruthlessness with myself. and i truly think it stemmed from having such a fantastic week the week before with our grease-inspired quickstep and then our viennese waltz that led to us being in the bottom two. and that really scared me more than i think i've ever admitted especially since i didn't seem scared or as though i was thrown off by the sudden change. but, i was absolutely scared and thrown off completely. but in saying that, i don't even think that was our "worst" dance either *kai and rylan shake their heads*. it was just simply that something clearly wasn't correctly done in the foundations of the dance, and i'm not trying to throw kai under the bus and say that it's his fault at all. because it wasn't, he choreographed a beautiful viennese, it was just that between the final rehearsal to the live iteration of the dance, something went wrong and we had to dance it again. but, blessed be god, we danced it better and we were saved for another week--"
"--and it never happened again!" rylan stepped in as rylee nodded her head, agreeing
"yes, absolutely right! after week four, it never happened again but it was something that really threw me off in a way that hadn't happened before. and, truthfully, it genuinely upset me but i never showed or told anyone that because i never cried or talked about it in future vt's. until a couple of weeks ago but that's a different story *giggles* but, now that we are here in the final, i don't feel the same fear that i felt in week four and then the following week leading up to week five. and since then, i haven't felt scared to go out and perform any of our dances but most importantly, i'm not scared about our three dances tomorrow night. like, genuinely, i feel the most confident i've felt since starting and i'm just truly excited to show everyone the connection that kai and i have built but also sustained throughout this whole competition. so, i...i just cannot wait for tomorrow night," rylee finished as kai nods his head in agreement as rylan smiles sweetly before asking another question
"kai, speaking of the vienesse, that's not the dance that the judges picked for you guys to do again. even though it was your lowest scoring, they chose for you guys to do your couple's choice again. can you explain why they chose that instead of the dance that you'd think they'd want you to do again and try for a higher score?" rylan questions as kai responds with a smile, rylee also smiling with a small laugh
"i know right? when rylee and i found that out, we were kind of confused and ready to throw some *laughter*, nah, not really. but, it was, because, as you said, our vienesse is our lowest scoring so, we would have thought that they'd choose that one so we could give it another shot and try to get it at a higher score. but, i do think ultimately the reason why they didn't choose the vienesse but our couple's choice instead was they felt as though they didn't get the full story of the couple's choice. whereas, they felt as though they saw so much of the vienesse that they felt like we should just leave it behind and have that stay at it's original score. because, i guess, it's a reminder not just to rylee and myself but to everyone that it's okay to have one dance or two that just aren't really up to perfection on this show and that not everything has to have a perfect score. and, another reason i think they chose the couple's choice was because, i guess, it touched not just the judges and the audience but it also touched the entire country. it touched an entire country in a time where we have all only just come out of a huge scary, life-changing pandemic and we're seeing and watching a young adult, a beautiful young woman, open up about the fact that just before the world was turned upside down and during the world's turn of being upside down, she and her family suffered an agonizing tragedy. something that, only recently she has opened up about, having only being talked and mentioned about by her older brother. and, getting the honour to be the person rylee opened up to and hearing her side of the "inspiration" of our couple's choice was so heartbreaking but it was so life-fufilling. and it's also something an outsider would have never of guessed that was how she dealt with that grief since it was never talked about until now. and, in all honesty, we are so excited to do our couple's choice again since it really does give rylee the time and the healing to really once again become vulnerable and open up. and to talk about those things that maybe she never thought she would have to open up about to the public," kai responds as rylee nods her head in agreement, speaking up
"yeah, i absolutely agree with everything kai just said. especially in regards to why the judges didn't pick week four's dance. it wasn't just something kai and i wanted to leave at the low score that it originally was but, it was the judges that wanted to leave it there too. because, they did say that they either wanted to see the vienesse again or our couple's choice and they said ultimately, that out of both dances, our couple's choice was a lot more meaningful. and they said it showcased a lot more than our vienesse did and that was why the judges decided to have kai and i perform that dance again as one of our three final dances," rylee responds as rylan nods his head with a smile as does kai
"just before we get around to the showdance because that is so much fun to watch since i already did get to watch a cheeky little bit of it earlier, it's gorgeous you two. let's talk a little bit more about your couple's choice, in regards to the dance, it is quite an emotional dance, isn't it rylee?" rylan asks as rylee and kai both nod their heads
"yes, it is very emotional, rylan. i mean, we performed it for the first time two weeks ago and it was for sure one of our favourites, if not our number on favourite. and it's our number one because it was just so emotional and it felt so freeing for me that i'm just so glad i get the pleasure to dance it again. but, getting to see my whole family in the audience this time and not just my brother shane. so, getting to have nicky, kian, mark, their partners and their kids, basically, the whole westlife family in the audience watching it will for sure be the icing on the cake for me. because, even though it is about the loss of me and shane's, and the rest of our siblings', parents, i'm also having a little surprise dedication. so, i'm just glad that i have the whole westlife crew here tomorrow night to watch it live," rylee pauses before continuing after another small prompt by rylan, kai sitting quietly listening intently
"so, now that you have been rehearsing it again alongside the quickstep and showdance, you did mention to janette that it is the more emotional dance out of all the dances you two have done. so, can you explain a little bit more what it's been like in rehearsals since it is a dance that is more recent other than the showdance?" rylan prompts as rylee giggles, kai lovingly letting rylee take the reigns of the interview at this point
"oh, like i said a couple of weeks ago when we first danced it, i absolutely love it. it was already so emotional and kai's choreography, again, is just so beautiful and it's so clear in his intentions for this dance as well. but, for tomorrow night, we have made it even more emotional and, it's actually the most vulnerable i've ever been in any of the dances, even when we first performed it two weeks ago, i was a lot more reserved and i guess, frightened of being emotional on camera. but, not this week, this week i've never been so confident in showing my true emotions and it's the most emotional kai has gotten as well during this entire competition. and, like we said two weeks ago, once again, it is a really gorgeous dance that just honours what my family has lost and it pays tribute to them beautifully. and, yeah, we're just glad we get the honour to dance it again but with the other two dances. and i also can't wait for the rest of my family to see it for the first time and for shane to see it a second time but reworked and a lot better," rylee smiles with a head nod as rylan smiles sweetly as does kai who comforts his partner
"hoo, i'll make sure to have the entire audience decked out with boxes of kleenex before your couple's choice love--"
"--for a second time," kai sassily jumps in as rylee giggles, smacking him playfully as rylan chuckles before continuing
"i know it's been an emotional and exhausting week for you guys and you're tired and i don't want to make it worse. however, we do have an amazing little clip of your family and friends who want to say a few words to you since we're running out of time and can't talk about the showdance..." rylan announces as rylee's eyes widen and she slides down her seat on the couch, before coming back up and hiding behind kai as he comforts her
"...growing up with rylee as a younger sister was truly the best thing in the world. ever since i could remember, she's been the sweetest, happiest, shyest little girl. she was such a party though when she was around people she was most comfortable with because she knew they weren't judgemental people. when me, rylee and our older sister mairead were slightly younger, we'd always run through our parents cafe since we lived above one back home in sligo, called the carlton cafe. we'd always be getting told off *giggles* but, it wasn't a bad thing and we never got into serious trouble with our mum and dad over it. but, i think it was because they didn't want to stop the moments where rylee was opening herself up to having fun and not always being so closed off and shy. however, i do think the reason why rylee is the way she is now is that she was always surrounded by music and also probably by my influence as well. and how me and the rest of westlife became so famous in the way we did. but, i do remember her telling me that even though i'm her older brother, i'm still her hero and her biggest influence," shane, her older brother speaks with a huge smile
"rylee was around fourteen, maybe fifteen when she decided she wanted to actually take music a little more seriously rather that just be back at home, working at the cafe with mum and dad. and for her first ever performance, she sang at a nightclub with westlife, simon cowell and louis walsh as a part of the attending guests *giggles* and she was just glowing on stage. her whole face just lit up when she heard the crowd cheering her on in the club and clapping for her. it was from that moment on that i could see louis become excited. i could tell that he wanted to make something of my sister and take the same chance on her that he took on westlife so, he did," shane smiles with a head nod as he continued to think about his little sister
shane's wife, rylee's sister-in-law then came on the vt, "i didn't meant rylee until about a month into me and shane's relationship but i doubt rylee would remember it because of how little she was. then, we got engaged december of 2002 and then we got married the following december in 2003. she was two when we got engaged and turned three when we got married and all i remember is a little three-year-old tightly holding a little woven basket of flowers as she walked down the aisle. she then ran straight over to me and gave me the biggest hug and then hugging shane before she stood with my bridesmaids for the rest of the wedding. getting to watch rylee grow up from essentially a baby to a twenty-one-year-old has genuinely been an honour and a privilege. she's a lovely girl and getting to watch her dance every saturday on strictly come dancing has been the best thing in the world. rylee, because she's the younger sister of a popstar, she has had to have her life all of a sudden projected in front of so many people that you would think she'd cave under the pressure. but, she never did. i got to watch her remain as the same little girl that i remember her being when i was first meeting her before she decided to be like her brother which is truly amazing that she never felt like she had to pretend and be someone she never was. i think it was also in part of watching her older brother go through everything he went through in the public eye that really shaped rylee into the young lady she is now and why she is so confident. i also think it's why she doesn't want to waste any more time being scared of what the media around her has to say about her and her family," gillian spoke with a small smile and laugh as she continued
"watching rylee compete on strictly now after watching her succeed as a solo artist in the same way her brother did and seeing how different she looks and how she is more confident really makes me emotional. i basically cry every week even though i'm only her sister-in-law, i still can tell she just looks happier and i truly think i've never seen her happier. this is also the first time i've ever seen rylee be so comfortable with herself and in her own skin and being happy to just be herself," gillian smiles as tears well in her eyes as she giggles softly
photos of rylee from when she was a kid and throughout the years were then shown whilst the voiceovers played over the top. then, a video message from her fiancé showed up. making rylee and kai who were watching this get extremely excited.
"watching my fiancée every weekend on strictly come dancing has got to for sure be the best thing i've seen in the entire world. i mean, i've already seen her sing and perform on a stage before but, this is the first time i've really seen my fiancée enjoy herself and just be what she's always wanted to be. which is happy and confident. and the fact that this is the show that has made her transform into what she's always dreamt herself to be is truly incredible. i'm always going to be grateful that she was given this opportunity with strictly and that she got to be happy and confident. and i say that because it's the best thing i could have ever imagined to watch every weekend on the television. before rylee joined strictly, i don't think she actually saw herself as a happy and confident person even though she was happy, i don't think she saw herself as someone who was happy. so, again, it's why i'm glad she's finally viewing herself in the same way that all of us that love her have always seen her as. it's just...it's amazing to see the love of my life finally believe in herself through ballroom dancing on a saturday evening," ollie sniffles with a small giggle as he got emotional over his fiancée - the show obviously changing her life for the better
alongside videos of rylee and kai dancing, were video messages from a few other of rylee's siblings and family members. but, the ones that really caught the girl off-guard were from her westlife uncles.
"watching our niece on strictly every weekend has truly been a proud moment for us three, not shane *laughter*. but especially getting to watch it on the weekend after a concert of ours or something and then getting to see shane just have the time of his life with gilian and the kids getting to watch their sister, sister-in-law and their aunty dance with kai. but, now that we get to come and watch the final this weekend and actually see two of their best dances plus their showdance is for sure going to be a night that'll be unforgettable and for sure memorable for years to come," mark spoke up first as the boys all agreed as rylee felt her heart melt
"watching my sister on that dance floor every weekend has been something that has for sure brought so much joy into my family's life after all the loss we've recently gone though. and, i guess, seeing rylee smile and laugh and seeing her have so much fun has always been what i've wanted my sister to have in her life. all i've wanted has been to see my sister smile and to see her laugh and see her have fun. and, truly, watching her do all of that with kai has been so carthartic and really healing. it's something i'm glad that she committed herself to since it is really the first time that she's ever done a reality competition show let alone be seen on a show that isn't a morning talk show to promote a new tour, album or single *laughter*. but, i think it's also amazing because for so many years, before us four had a name in westlife, rylee was always known as "the younger sister of shane filan" and i just know how much that annoyed her growing up. it annoyed her because to her, it felt like she didn't have her own name and wasn't her own person. so, getting to watch her being called by her own name, rylee filan, and getting to watch her just be herself without any connotations towards me is truly spectacular. it's been wonderful seeing my younger sister show the whole of the united kingdom and ireland that rylee is more than just the sister of a boybander and more than just a singer herself. rylee has a personality that isn't my younger sister. she never deserved to be in the shadow of her older brother, especially when she's more than just my younger sister," shane smiles as rylee smiled at what her brother said
kian spoke next, "anytime i think the four of us turn on our tellies and watch rylee and kai dance or even get interviewed, i can't help but just feel so proud of my niece. sure, she's an amazing singer and was always going to be famous from the moment it was released that the filan's were welcoming an eighth child. but, watching her actually be in that limelight as she got older has truly been something that has taken the four of us back to when it was all new and flashy lights for us. but, for rylee, again, it wasn't as scary because she simply grew up with it because of her brother's fame, whereas for the four us, it was so new to all of us, we never had a proper guiding light going into it so, it's an honour being that guiding light for rylee. to then, watch her come into this show and then open herself up in ways that she hasn't done before has truly been a snapshot in time for us. rylee has truly done all of us back home in ireland proud and, i just know that those people that have left us, are also looking down on rylee. and, i cannot tell you rylee, just how proud they are of you. we love you dearly rylee and we cannot wait to see you grab that mirrorball this weekend!" kian blows a kiss to the camera as rylee smiles, kai hugs her as nicky speaks up in another video
"getting to watch rylee accomplish what she's been able to accomplish in these last twelve weeks is crazy. she's never been a dancer, to begin with, having no prior dance experience, let alone ballroom. but, the fact that whilst she's never danced before this competition, it's very clear that it's her musicality that helps her to have the knowledge so she can then execute it on that ballroom floor every saturday night. but, also having done this competition myself and only just missing out on the final, having the pleasure to see my niece get to that place in the competition is truly wonderful. because, even though westlife were no longer together, our family unit was still tight-knit and i remember how badly rylee wanted me to get to the final. and, i also think she knew how much i also wanted it but was never able to reach it. so, because of that, i think that's what made her push herself even more because she knew if i couldn't get to the final for myself and my family, then she could get to the final for me and for our family. it's obvious at how much i love rylee as well as kai, having worked with him on dancing with the stars in ireland and, i just wish the both of them, as all of us at westlife want to, the best of luck for the final tomorrow night. and, we just hope that we'll be watching the both of them lift the glitterball trophy live when we come to watch it in the strictly studios," nicky smiles as the westlife lads smile and nod their heads, rylee and kai moved by all the messages
after nicole, shane's daughter, rylee's niece, sent a message on behalf of all the westlife children, the rest of rylee's family and friends revealed what their favourite dances were. mark (westlife) said he enjoyed her and kai's movie-week quickstep, shane (westlife) said he adored her and kai's couples choice, nicky and kian (westlife) said they were for sure going to love their couple's choice. whilst the westlife kids all agreed that the american smooth and argentine tango was exquisite whilst the westlife spouses and ollie, rylee's fiancé said they enjoyed the paso doble.
however, it only got emotional when shane, along with his bandmates, mentioned how proud their parents, peter and mae and nicky and kian's deceased fathers would have been of rylee. and how they would have absolutely loved to watch their special girl dance and win strictly come dancing.
"i have no doubt in my mind that our parents, nikki byrne sr and kevin egan would have really loved to watch their special girl. their special little rylee dance on strictly every saturday and i'm sure they have been looking down on our girl and cheering her along every single week..." shane smiles tearfully as he looks at his bandmates who smile back
"...they'd for sure be kicking themselves and wishing they were still here to watch you, rylee because i know they would have loved and absolutely indulged on you. and they would have celebrated how much happier and confident you've gotten since starting the show. you are a superstar and, like the judges say every week, you really could get away with throwing the singing career out the window and start to train as a ballroom professional and then join the strictly pros *laughter* you're just that good. it's absolutely blindly obvious at this point as to who the winner is, we love you, rylee!" nicky blows a kiss to the camera with a teary smile as the other three do the same thing
a video from movie week showing rylee and kai's first ten was then accompained by a video from ollie, rylee's finacé,"when ry and kai got their first fourty back in week three, with their grease-inspired quickstep, that was the moment i really had to take a step back. and i realised just how amazing rylee was even though to me, she was already perfect and sensational, that dance just proved it tenfold. that was also the moment where i really saw rylee's confidence shine through and it was when i saw her truly realise that she was way more than being compared to her older brother. even though she was always told from basically infancy that the only thing she'll be good for and known for is being the sister of shane filan. but, in that moment, right there, on that night, in her eyes, she was no longer known as just "shane filan, from westlife's younger sister", she was rylee filan. she finally had her own name and she was finally acknowledged for being more and being a talented performer," ollie explains with the sweetest smile on his face as the westlife lads appeared back up on the vt
"if rylee was to win, it would be completely life-changing, not just for her but, i think for everyone who sees themselves in rylee. and also for every other young person across the country or even the world. she was always looked at weirdly and with a lot of judgement for being the younger sister of a boy-bander. but, now she's finally being acknowledged for more than just the backbone of her brother's fame. those kids that used to laugh at her, look who's laughing now? that girl you used to tease relentlessly for who she was is now on tv everynight with her name being recanted out for everyone to hear and to watch her. why should she not have the chance to become successful when she isn't the only one in her family with talent?" kian spoke as the lads all agreed with kian's statement as rylee found herself going red in the face as she watched
"to watch her have the same ups and downs that nicky and other former celebrities that did this show go through and then see her pick herself up and continue with such grace and confidence is truly unbelievable. but, it was all of that grace and confidence that got her all the way into the final and it's incredible. i mean, all the hard work she and kai went through is paying off in the best way possible. i mean, i just absolutely adore that girl and, truly, i am so glad i got snatch her up for myself and put a ring on it before any other guy could *laughter*," ollie ends off the individual messages but, for the very last one, everyone had come together to give rylee and kai a group message
"you are amazing, rylee and kai! we know you can win so, go out there tomorrow night and win it for us!" mark calls out before everyone else joins him for the final message:
yelling, "we love you rylee and kai! you can do this! come on, bring it home to ireland!" the group yelled as rylee and kai chuckled
one last clip of rylee and kai laughing and hugging was shown before the vt was completely finished. the camera coverage returning back to rylan, rylee and kai on the couch.
rylan awes as does rylee as she giggles, revealing to everyone that she hadn't cried but, kai had and he laughed. a look of shock and concern quickly covers rylee's face when she actually took the time to pay attention to kai. pulling him for a hug, kai chuckled and accepted the hug, rylan gives a sweet, touched look to the camera as he gave the duo a moment to breathe and so kai could compose himself.
a small pout on his face, rylee then offers him a tissue from the bedazzled tissue box that rylan had handed her, "awe, kai, rylee that was so sweet. now, i need to ask you both though, i know the competition has meant the most to you and you haven't really mentioned winning but, how would you feel if you two did end up lifting that glitterball at the end of tomorrow's show?"rylan questions as rylee chuckles, comforting kai as she tilts her head to the side slightly
"umm...honestly, of course, it would feel amazing to win and because, obviously, kai deserves it so much. but, i...i don't know honestly! it's a weird question for me to answer because i've truthfully never thought about winning this show. like, genuinely, i only wanted to do it because nicky never got the chance to dedicate a dance to his beautiful father, god rest his soul, and i also wanted to let the country know. and, also, myself in a way, that i could be something great and that i wasn't just the younger sister of a westlife legend," rylee shrugged as rylan's shoulder's slumped and he pouted as did kai as rylee chuckled
"aw, love," rylan whispered as rylee explained herself
"i would love to lift that glitterball, rylan, don't get me wrong, of course i would, because, like i just said, kai truly deserves it. and, it would mean so much to him as well as myself if we did win it. but, i think just being on this show full stop and getting partnered up with kai and dancing with him every week and just getting to laugh with him. i mean, all of this stuff, getting to dance and laugh with him for the last thirteen weeks, and just to delve deeply into what his world is in his everyday life has been similar to the feeling of winning that trophy. like, getting to feel this new euphoric feeling of dancing a new style of latin & ballroom with kai every weekend has just been life-changing so, in all honesty, whether or not kai and i win, it won't make a single difference. and, honestly, it wouldn't make us sad or anything because just doing this competition together with the rest of this beautiful cast has been a dream," rylee smiles as she squeezes kai's hand tightly as he had been trying to compose himself the whole time, wiping away his tears as he nodded his head in agreement as rylan nods his head as well
"i know you're emotional kai but, even with all the support and the love from not just your friends and family but also from the public, what would it mean to you, kai? what would it mean for you to lift that glitterball tomorrow night?" rylan asks as kai tearfully giggles, tilting his head similarly to rylee before responding
"honestly, it would mean the entire world to me. it would mean that rylee's family were absolutely right in trusting me with their special girl. it would mean that *sniffle* everything i did was all worth it," kai whispers as he started to cry again, rylee pulling him in for a hug as rylan cooed, his shoulders relaxing again as he gave the duo a moment
"that was so sweet of you to say, kai," rylan smiles as kai nods his head, calming himself down so he can continue
"it sounds so dramatic but, i truly mean it because that's what it does mean for me. i mean, the fact that rylee and i are here and have gotten this far is the tell-all. so, we're just extremely grateful for everything," kai finishes as he wipes away the rest of his tears, rylee nods her head and rylan smiles
"we're also grateful that you two are still here! they have been amazing everybody, so sorry we couldn't find out more about the showdance but, that just means it'll be a surprise for tomorrow! well, listen, best of luck for tomorrow and get some rest because we've got a big night tomorrow. everyone, please, give it up for the amazing rylee and kai! now we go over to janette who is with the other celebrity/pro dancers," rylan finishes as rylee and kai applaud and giggle as they then leave
~
it was the final of strictly come dancing 2022 and rylee was just about crapping herself. all three finalists had three dances they were dancing as part of their last ever chance at winning the glitterball for 2022. the dances that rylee and kai were going to be doing is their grease-inspired quickstep, which the couple chose and was the dance that gave. them their first and earliest ever perfect score. their showdance as well as their couple's choice which was chosen by the judges to see again.
videos of rylee walking on the strictly stage in a gorgeouos red halter-neck one-piece playsuit were then shown. her blonde hair was in a slicked-back high ponytail, glittery pumps worn to tie the whole outfit all together. several videos showed rylee reaching up towards the glitterball, the biggest smile ever on her face as she stared at it in complete awe. she couldn't believe that she was a finalist in strictly come dancing 2022.
speaking in the vt for the final time, rylee smiled, "getting to the final of strictly is just incredible. like, since the beginning, i don't recall ever thinking i'd get this far even though i wanted to for nicky and his father. and, it was never because i doubted myself per se or kai but, because i genuinely didn't think that the public would be able to find me likeable. or, really, have any other personality to me other than the fact that my older brother is shane filan from westlife. however, being able to say i'm the strictly final is truly something i'm always going to be grateful and quite proud of," rylee smiles as she nods her head
kai laughed hysterically as they rehearsed for their quickstep. however, the reason why kai was laughing wasn't for the reason you'd think it would be over. rylee had just been surprised by her fiancé ollie, who had just come home from his military deployment. so, the reason why kai was laughing was that rylee was trying to teach her "uncle", nicky, westlife singer and former strictly quarter-finalist her and kai's grease-inspired quickstep. however, nicky just couldn't get it nor wrap his head around how fast it was and why it was so hard! he never rembered his quickstep with karen hauer being that quick or that difficult. even though the quickstep is quite notoriously very quick and hard. however, it seemed as if rylee was doing it seamlessly and perfectly, even with nicky not quite getting the steps. which is what made kai laugh even more which ended up with nicky and rylee laughing as well as everyone else who was watching them.
and this time, it was nicky apologising to rylee, not rylee apologising to someone else, "i'm sorry ryry, that was utter crap!" nicky chuckled as the song finished, rylee cackling, her head flying back as she calmed down before responding
"it's totally fine, nicky but, oh my god, that was hilarious!" rylee giggled as she placed her hands on the top of her head to open up her airways so she could let oxygen through to breathe properly
however, like always, with all of the laughter between the two, they also had time to knuckle down and be serious during their rehearsal time. they didn't want to mess up, not at the final of all places. they couldn't afford to since they had bascially been labelled as "perfect" since the beginning. with the exception, of course, of their vienesse waltz, there was no way in hell they were going to fuck it up now when it really mattered. after more videos of kai and rylee rehearsing their quickstep were shown, so was a voiceover of rylee talking about this dance again. talking about how excited she was in having the opportunity to dance it again in the final.
"the dance that kai and i chose as our favourite dance is our movie week quickstep inspired by grease the movie. dancing to the very iconic "you're the one that i want" by the very wonderful olivia newton-john and john travolta. and this quickstep is probably the quickest quickstep that kai has ever done with a contestant before so, the fact he gave it to me was very stressful when he first gave it to us. but, honestly, it has genuinely become one of my favourites, hence why we chose to do it again for the final," rylee smiled as she giggled in the background
"we just hope that we can recreate how it felt when it was seen for the first time all over again. because, dancing it the first time was probably the time, the highlight for me and kai on the show. so, i just hope we're able to replicate that feeling one more time on that stage," rylee smiles as the vt ends
as the vt ends, rylee and kai get into their positions and smile at the crowd hyping them up. even though it was mostly their family that could be heard. they then waited for the musical cue so kai could call out his dramatic "ry?" and the dance could begin.
hitting their final pose, rylee and kai started laughing in joy. incredibly proud that they were able to, once again, replicate what this dance was like for the first time all those weeks ago. but better. running over to tess for the judges' comments, the poor host was flabbergasted at how amazing their first dance of the evening was. it was clear that they were wanting to do nothing else but win tonight, rylee and kai.
"...what an amazing quickstep and what a joy to see it again, shirley?" tess comments before gesturing over to shirley who just looked shocked
"i am truly flabbergasted at how amazing that was you two! it was as if we were seeing this for the first time all over again! i mean, rylee, you were sassy, you were confident, you were happy. and in all honesty, you'd be an amazing sandy in the west end's version of grease. i mean, you absolutely slayed this dance and i need to say it again. because, it truly blows my mind at how easy it is for you to not just follow but also keep in time with kai! you are not falling behing at all my darling! this characterisation was perfection. i cannot wait to see your showdance and the judges choice!" shirley winks as rylee and kai smile, attempting to catch their breath and thanking the head judge
craig shakes his head with the largest smile on his face, "i know i said this when we first saw this dance but, i have to say it again. that is the quickest quickstep my eyes have ever watched and i feel dizzy but in the best way possible *laughter*. for this to be your first dance of the evening and knowing the next two that are coming, i'm flowing with excitement. i was so glad that this was the first dance you picked to do again because i have loved this dance since the start and it was a blast watching it all over again! well done and thank you for your wonderful and flawless execution of a quickstep two separate times!" craig cheers as do the audience as rylee and kai chuckle, looking over to motsi
"i mean, i am shocked! that was so much fun and so entertaining to watch! like, i can only feel happy and energetic whilst watching that dance! watching you really sink your teeth into that character again was just fantastic, rylee! as shirley said, you would be a firecracker of a sandy on the west end production of grease cause you can sing, you can dance...that's basically everything needed in a musical along with acting *laughter* and boom, you're a star! and like the other two judges before me have said, i cannot wait to see your two other dances, congratulations!" motsi smiles, giggling as rylee chuckles as well as she blows the judge a kiss as they look over at anton
"when we first saw this dance in week three, we all knew how beside myself i was so, i remembered to take in a deep breath before saying my comment *laughter*. so, rylee and kai, all i have to say is, that was brilliant and i am so thankful that you chose to perform this dance again. because, not only is it one of your favourites, it's one of my favourites too. you were sensational rylee, your legs, your smile and your extensions were glorious, as was your characterisation! i am immensely proud of you and i'm looking forward to your next two dances, well done," anton winks as rylee smiled, thanking him as does kai
tess smiled as she turned back to rylee and kai, "amazing comments, not that that isn't new, rylee and kai. however, due to time constraints, we won't have time to talk about them so, over to you claudia so we can get the judges' scores and these two can get ready for their showdance!" tess winks as rylee and kai grab hands and run over to the strictly box to get their first round of judges' scores.
"...the judges' scores are in... craig revel horwood..."
"...10!"
"motsi mabuse..."
"...10!"
"shirley ballas..."
"...10!"
"anton du beke..."
"...10!" anton smiled as the box filled up with cheers and applause for yet another perfect score for rylee and kai
"congratulations, rylee and kai, yet another pefect score! wish we could speak more but, since you've got to get ready for your showdance, we have to let you go!" claudia laughs as rylee and kai nod their heads, just as astounded as everyone else as they left to then get ready for their showdance
in the vt for rylee and kai's showdance, it was explained that this year, the showdance would be danced in between the couple's favourite and judges' pick. because the majority of the finalists had their couples' choice/most emotional dances as the judges' pick dance and they decided to show them last.
in the video, small clips of rylee and kai rehearsing the showdance were shown and it was beautiful. they were showdancing to emeli sande's shine. and, just like the first vt, many giggles and silly little mistakes were shown in this vt as well.
the amount of fun that rylee and kai were having whilst rehearsing their showdance was so much. it was joyus and filled with pure happiness for those watching.
in giggles, rylee attempted to explain her and kai's showdance, "for...for our showdance *giggles* kai and i are dancing to emeli sande's song shine. it is a gorgeous song and we--stop it kai!" rylee squealed as kai scared his celebrity partner as laughter erupted through the dance studio
"can you believe that i still have to deal with this big child?!" rylee squeals as kai hangs off of rylee's shoulders as he giggles childishly whilst his partner is trying to stay serious
"you love me, filan!" kai tries to win his partner over but, this time, it wasn't working, a death stare being fed back to the professional
"do i, widdrington?" rylee responded back with a blank face as the cameraman teased the professional who looked truly devastated
"damn, that hurt!" kai sighed as rylee burst out into laughter, hugging the professional
"i'm only joking! of course, i love you kai!" rylee giggled as kai's face went from being sad and hurt to happy again as the two of them started laughing
more clips of the two rehearsing were then shown. then a voiceover of rylee screaming in rehearsals was then shown as laughter followed afterwards.
"--let's hope and pray that the dance gods don't let us mess up this showdance because jesus christ we need this to work!" rylee is then heard saying with giggles as the vt finally wrapped up
rylee and kai were in their positions for their showdance. only hoping that nothing that could go wrong in the dance was going to go wrong.
and, nothing went wrong. the showdance was perfectly executed as rylee and kai celebrated. hugging each other in the pure joy that two dances out of three were done to perfection. running over to tess for the judges' comments for a second time, the poor host was again flabbergasted at how amazing that dance just was. and how it seemed as though rylee and kai were just soaring with their dances this final. as mentioned before, it was very clear that they were wanting to win tonight.
"what a stunning showdance, shirley?" tess comments before gesturing over to shirley who now really had no clue what to say anymore
"i thought your first dance had me flabbergasted but no, this one just accelerated it! this was a gorgeous showdance, rylee and kai. your connection was amazing, you were smiling, you were trusting with one another and the way you two were just having pure fun was just amazing to see. it was like i was watching two best friends just having the time of their lives together! i really loved it, truly i did. rylee, your extensions, your legs, and your hands were all spectacular and the lifts, wow! you two just blow me away every single week, congratulations!" shirley winks as rylee and kai smile, thanking the head judge
craig smiled brightly, "this showdance was marvellous darling! your lifts were exceptional, your extensions were gorgeous, and, oh my god, your smile and pure joy with kai was heartwarming to watch. and i am so glad we got to see it because your smile just lit up the entire stage and it was timeless. and, it's also a moment that i am genuinely never going to forget when this year's show finishes and i hope it's a moment you never forget either. i am so proud of you rylee and i cannot wait for your judges' pick," craig smiles as he applauds rylee and kai who thank him, before looking at motsi for her comment
"i'm completely stumped for words! that was so much fun and just radiated pure happiness! like, all i can feel from both of your dances so far is just joy and energy! like, i wanted to get up on the stage and dance with you and kai! your connection is so strong and your technique is flawless. well done you two, you are on a roll tonight for the final!" motsi winked as rylee felt herself blush as she felt kai hug her tighter as they then turned to anton
"what else can i say rylee? the other judges have said everything! this dance was per-fec-tion! it had everything that a showdance should have in it and you danced it beautifully! your lifts were effortless, i mean, everything in this dance was perfect from top to bottom, left to right, and side to side. well done darling, you were sensational!" anton winks as rylee smiles, thanking him again as kai does as well
tess smiles as she turns back to rylee and kai, "amazing comments, yet again you two. however, like last time, we don't have enough time sadly to talk about them. so, go over to claudia with the judges' scores!" tess smiles as rylee and kai grab hands and run over to the box to get their second round of judges' scores
"...the judges' scores are in...craig revel horwood..."
"...10!"
"motsi mabuse..."
"...10!"
"shirley ballas..."
"...10!"
"anton du beke..."
"...10!" anton smiled as the contestants and box all jumped up in cheers and applause for another one of rylee and kai's perfect scores
"congratulations, rylee and kai, another perfect score! literally record-breaking this, i've at this point lost count of how many 40s these two have gotten throughout this competiton," claudia laughs as rylee and kai nod their heads, just as astounded as the first time
once again, rylee and kai were ushered out to get changed into their outfits for the third and final dance, their judges' pick. which was their couple's choice from two weeks ago in which rylee dedicated to her deceased parents. all the other contestants had since performed their third and final dance leaving just rylee and kai to perform their last dance.
and out of nowhere, the show had suddenly gotten way too emotional from all the other couple's choices/judges' picks. however, it seemed as if rylee and kai were about to just make everyone even more emotional with their judges' picks. so, in anticipation of how her brother and westlife family were going to react, especially shane and maybe nicky and kian, rylee and kai watched their final ever vt package before their final dance on strictly come dancing for 2022.
in this final vt, no one was laughing or messing around because they didn't want to risk fucking up this beautiful and meaningful couple's choice. performed two weeks ago, it was a dance that was actually very emotional and important to rylee but important to kai as well. for the reason being that he was absolutely honoured to get to be the person showing the entire country this new and vulnerable side to rylee that wasn't even shown two weeks ago when the dance was first performed. a side of rylee that no one had ever seen, not even in the few seconds of a strictly vt package before a dance. just like two weeks ago, this couple's choice was showing the country the losses that rylee went through at seventeen and eighteen when she lost both of her parents from cancer. her mum mae the december before the pandemic started in 2019 and then ten months later, her father peter in the middle of the october 2020 lockdown. as well as a tribute to the losses she went through back in 2009 when her uncles, nicky byrne and kian egan went through the deaths of their own fathers, nikki sr and kevin. opening up about many things, one of them that didn't make the cut was the effect of her older brother's westlife fame had on her when she was constantly told that was all she'd be known for. all she wanted for this final dance was to pay tribute to her beautiful parents and nikki sr and kevin egan. she was dancing to westlife's version of the elvis costello hit, "please stay" after nicky's dad had been begging for his son to sing it. so, it was known that when nicky did lose his father, at the funeral, that was when westlife sang it for the first time, after that deciding to put the song on the newest album at the time. so, for rylee, this was an important song that she was dancing to as well as an important last dance for her time in this competition. only hoping it was enough to get her that glitterball.
"...this last dance, which is a dance that the judges' have picked, is the most emotional and the most open i have ever been with anyone. we did this dance two weeks ago and, whilst it would usually terrify me to be so open and honest with anyone let alone the entire country, i stupidly chickened out two weeks ago when i originally should have been honest and opened up. opened up about the importance and the significance this dance has for me. i have waited way too long to do this and if i am to wait any longer, i'll never do it. so, what better way to be vulnerable than getting a second chance to do the very dance that was supposed to be me at my most vulnerable. but with the dancer and person that i have trusted my whole life with for the last thirteen weeks?" rylee speaks in a voiceover over her doing a dance move from the contemporary couple's choice dance in rehearsals
"back in december of 2019, i was told whilst at school in ireland, via a phone call with my brother shane, that our mum, who had been going through five years of cancer at this stage, wasn't doing well. and that i was needing to leave school and to come visit the hospice that she was residing in. i would later find out that fifteen minutes before shane had called me that our mother had already passed away in the very same hospice with the rest of our family, excluding me, all by her bedside and that it was a peaceful death. i was just a seventeen-year-old kid who was trying to get the rest of my school year done since i was either a couple of months from graduating or a couple of months from finishing my second to last year of high school. after losing mum, i didn't think any year or life even, could be worse because what's worse than losing one parent?" rylee paused as she giggled nervously as she took in a big deep breath so she wouldn't cry straight away
"something worse than the death of one parent is the death of your remaining parent ten months later, also from cancer. in october of 2020, right in the heart of the pandemic and the lockdown. i was staying with shane, his wife and their kids, my niece and nephews. we were watching a movie, shane and myself when shane recieved a call at around 3 in the morning from our brother who was staying with our dad in the hospital..." rylee's voice faltered before she quickly gained control again and continued
"...and i could just tell from the look on shane's face that he knew what the call was about because who calls someone at 3 in the morning? even though i didn't verbally confirm it, shane did, i still knew what it was that shane was confirming. he had gotten a call from our older brother peter, who had been staying at the hospital with our dad when he told us that dad had peacefully passed away at the hospital. with him was peter himself and the amazing hospital staff of st vincents hospital by his side. finding out our dad had died just ten months after our mum felt like something from a tv show or something that was only ever really seen in those crazy film scenarios. i was eighteen when we lost our dad and i just keep on replaying the moment that we received that phone call. it was like december 2019 all over again, me getting shane's phone call at school about mum not being well and that i was needing to leave school immediately. however, i wasn't at school and i wasn't being called by shane, shane was being called by our older brother and we were stuck at his house, during lockdown. the two of us just peacefully watching movies whilst my sister-in-law and niece and nephews were peacefully sleeping when all of a sudden, the world gets pulled out from underneath us all over again..."
"...hearing that news about my parents dying was like the days i found out that my uncles, nicky and kian had lost their dads. whilst i was only young in 2009 when nicky and kian's fathers passed away, i was still upset. i was upset because it truly hit me that i was never going to see them again which then sparked the fear and paranoia that the same thing would happen to my own parents. and then, ten and eleven years later, it did happen to my family..."
"...knowing i'll never see my mum and dad again makes me feel like my world will never be the same again, it feels like life turns in slow motion now..." rylee sniffled as she covered her face before she gave up trying to be in control, finally starting to cry as the clip ended
a different video of her then started to play where she wasn't crying.
"...getting to perform this dance a second time, especially two weeks after originally dancing it with the rest of my westlife family there to watch it live just feels absolutely unreal. i mean, i've been so secretive about my couple's choice dance to the other three and their partners and kids. i even went as far as forcing them to not find the video of last week's performance on youtube and to not watch it so they would be completely surprised for saturday. but also because i know. how much of an emotional moment it's going to be for them and i want it to be the same surprise for them as it was for shane when he first saw it two weeks ago when he came to watch it. i also know how healing it'll be for them, especially nicky and kian so, i wanted to make sure it stayed pure for them, hence why i didn't tell them. and also why i forced them to skip that performance from two weeks ago. shane, gillian and their kids are genuinely the only ones who know this dance and its ins and outs and, it made them cry their eyes out when they saw it live. so, if i got them to cry, it's for sure going to get mark, nicky, kian and their partners and maybe their children too. and, hopefully my fiancé to shed a tear or two as well and, honestly, that's my goal," rylee chuckled cheekily in a less emotional clip before more clips of the couple's choice rehearsals were shown as the very snippet of the video that rylee explained, shane, gillian and his children, nicole, patrick and shane jr's, first reactions of the couple's choice dance was shown
"for my couple's choice on saturday, my last ever dane on strictly come dancing, i will be dedicating it to my parents, peter and mae filan. but, i'll also be dedicating to nicky byrne's father, nikki byrne sr and kian egan's father, kevin egan. you four may all be gone but you are never forgotten and you never will be. the westlife family love you four so much, you were all great parents to us all and we miss you every single day!" rylee finishes off the vt with a heartfelt dedication to everyone who her family and extended have lost, including the fathers of her westlife uncles, nicky and kian
as soon as kai and rylee finished the dance, she basically took a breath in before starting to cry as she ran over to her brother and family. shane, as everyong (secretly) bet on, had started crying frmo the moment the vt started playing. kian started crying the moment the song started and nicky not long after. so, when it came to who to hug first, rylee quickly had to decide, ultimately hugging her older brother first. pulling away to then move to hug nicky and kian, then mark as she then hugged all of her nieces and nephews. sadly not able to get to her sister-in-law or aunties or cailean.
after hugging one more person, her fiancé ollie. with kisses to her sister-in-law and everyone else again, rylee ran back over to kai and tess. kai grabbed a tight hold of her hand and squeezed as they got prepared for a final lot of judges' comments.
"that was a gorgeous dance, you two but, before i start crying, which could get very ugly, we'll move straight on to our judges, shirley?" tess chuckles as she swiftly brings finger under her eye as shirley smiles sweetly
"oh, rylee, whilst this is our second time seeing this dance, this is what we've been wating for! all we've wanted after so many amazingly precise and perfectly choreographed dances, even seeing this dance two weeks ago, was your vulnerability. and i am so glad you were finally able to show us after being intimidated by it two weeks ago because watching this exact dance tonight in comparison to those two weeks ago was so much better. it was so much better because we were able to really understand the song choice behind the dance and the meaning of it for you. which in turn made this weeks version of it a million miles better and that much more gutwrenching when it was paired with that emotional videotape at the beginning to then be followed by it's beautiful dance. thank you for sharing this dance with us for a second time. clearly, there was a reason why we chose it as the judges' pick *giggles*. and i am sure kai's just as thankful for you opening up to him so you two could get this dance to the pure perfection that it was just then. you were utterly stunnning and if this dance isn't what gets you two that glitterball, well i'll be damned! perfection, you two, perfection!" shirley smiles with a cheeky wink as rylee tearfully giggles, her tears drying as kai consoles her as he sweetly smiles over at shirley before craig spoke up
"i have no idea what to say because that was just exquisite, i mean, there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. i mean, all these other dances tonight, they've been so many mistakes. tiny little things that should have been fixed weeks ago when it's the final. but, every single dance that we've seen from you two, rylee and kai, have been perfection! and watching this one again with the new vulnerability and backstory just broke my hert and that doesn't happen because i'm almost always heartless *laughter*. but watching you open yourself up to all of us and to be so trusting of us to keep it safe just made my heart grow a couple of sizes only to have it be broken!" craig huffed as rylee giggled, kai was smiling as tess gestured to motsi who was slightly more emotional than shirley and craig
"this dance was gorgeous, rylee! watching you dance it a second time with the added context was beautiful and it was gut-wrenching but it was beautiful and it was filled with hope. i don't have any words because not only did the others take mine away but, seeing you dance like that and get so vulnerable just took everything i could think about away from me. i mean, this is all we ever want to see a contestant do, we want them to open up to and be vulnerable and feel safe to do so. but, the fact it has taken you this long, until the final, for you to become this vulnerable honestly breaks my heart because it feels like we should and could have given you this opportunity way earlier, not just two weeks ago when you first gave us this masterpiece. but, i am just utterly grateful to see this dance a second time now and have the honour to experience it for the first time, knowing what it means to you and why you were dancing it. just like shirley said, if this dance doesn't get you this goddamn glitterball, i'm going to throw my shoe and then eat it, and i'm not even joking in the slightest!" motsi ends her comment as everyone giggles, anton then collects himself as he had also gotten emotional before starting his comment
"wow, i mean, that really made me emotional and took me out. and it's all i've ever wanted to see from you, rylee and i'm so glad we finally got to see it. watching you in that vt share all those things that you've possibly never told anyone let alone an entire country was the bravest thing i've ever seen you do in these thirteen weeks that we've gotten to know you. the way you both had so much control yet sensitivity to the topic and the song was breathtaking. i am so proud of you rylee and i know that your parents, peter and mae, as well as nikki sr and kevin, are as well! i'm just so sorry that they're not here to tell you in person!" anton's voice breaks as he calms himself down and rylee smiles sweetly, making the decision to quickly run over and give him a hug in gratitude for his kind words
tess smiled as she thanked the judges wordlessly for their comments as she explained that once again, she couldn't have rylee and kai talk about their thoughts on the comments. ushering them over to claudia and the showbox, where they were able to.
claudia smiled as she spoke up, "what an incredibly emotional dance, half of our studio is still recovering *laughter* and frankly so am i! but, before we get to our judges' scores, rylee, you mentioned in your vt that whilst dedicating this dance to your parents, you also dedicated it to the fathers of two of your brother's band's deceased fathers, nikki sr and kevin, why was that?" claudia questions as rylee smiles as she nods her head
"the reason why i also dedicated this dance to nikki sr and kevin, especially nikki sr, was because nicky didn't get the chance to dedicate a dance of his own to his dad. since he was eliminated during week ten of his year on strictly come dancing. so, getting the opportunity to dedicate my most emotional and meaningful dance to nicky's dad as well as kian's was something that i thought was the right thing to do. especially since nicky didn't get that moment when he did the show back in 2012 and because for kian, it only felt right to pay tribute to them together rather than only just one of them," rylee smiled sweetly as that just about broke every single person's heart
the camera then zoomed down to the audience and on nicky's face as he heard rylee said that. his eyes welling up with tears still even after the performance, his wife georgina comforting him.
"oh, rylee, that is so very kind and sweet of you. i'm sure nicky and kian are gong to appreciate hearing you say that. now that we are still all recovering here after hearing that, don't lie *laughter*, let's get these judges' scores shall we?" claudia chuckles as do rylee and kai as they hold hands tightly and wait as patiently as they can
"...the judges' scores are in... craig revel horwood..."
"...10!"
"motsi mabuse..."
"...10!"
"shirley ballas..."
"...10!"
"anton du beke..."
"...10!" anton smiled as the showbox filled with cheers and applause for another perfect score for rylee and kai
"what an amazing score you two, all three of your dances tonight have been perfect scores! which, if you guys were counting, gives rylee and kai a goddamn world record. because, like i said earlier tonight, i have lost count of how many perfect scores they have recieved *laughter*. in all seriousness though, congratulations you two, that dance was perfection and possibly one of the best final dances we've ever seen, if not the best!" claudia spoke in utter shock as rylee and kai just nodded their heads
the both them in shock and still emotional from the dance because, phew, forget about it if you didn't get emotional during that dance!
~
after waiting for what felt like years, it had finally come to the moment that was the be-all or end-all for the remaining three contestants left. rylee and kai stood closest to the right of the stage right where her family sat, the other two couples on their left side, which she felt good about because it meant that she was right in the eye-line of her family. and, if she needed them, she could focus her eyes and concentration on them if she could just bring herself to do it and it would make her feel better. it all just seemed absolutely terrifying for rylee. sure, she had gone through twleve weeks, not including tonight, of strictly come dancing results but, it was still the first time she was on a competition show like this let alone in general. holding kai's hand in a double lock with her own, she couldn't bear looking up to face anyone. not even her family like she thought she'd be able to do. comforting her as best as he could, kai only wished that he could do all he could to make rylee feel less scared, especially since she had just spent all these weeks so closed off and basically hidden away from everyone to all of a sudden opening herself up. sharing her whole life with the world in a matter of moments during the final, he only wished he could have switched places with the young girl. however, he couldn't take her fear away or her nausea but what he could do was comfort her and take care of her like he's done the last thirteen weeks. they painstakingly waited for the final results and to who the hell was lifting this goddamn strictly glitterball trophy!
and finally, it was time to find out the winner of strictly come dancing 2022, "rylee & kai, molly & carlos and hamza & jowita, the votes have been counted and independently verified. and now we can reveal the strictly come dancing champions are..."
"...rylee and kai!!" tess and claudia announce as screams are unleashed from the stage and audience
and poor rylee just doesn't react at all. kai is shaking her to let her know that it was them that had won which finally proceeds to set off the sweetest reaction from the young girl. she latches onto kai and doesn't let him go as they both start crying.
"also, massive congratulations to our wonderful runners-up, molly & carlos and hamza & jowita, come on over here darlings," tess says, hollering the other two couples over so rylee and kai could accept their trophy
"rylee and kai, you are our winners, how does it feel?" tess questions as rylee basically shuts down and starts laughing as kai watches on fondly with a sweet smile as he tries to calm himself down
"ummm....*laughter* it feels pretty cool?" rylee shyly chuckles, her voice up an octave as she then tries to rack her brain for something better than just pretty cool
gesturing to kai, tess smiles, "it feels amazing, i mean, i just got to say the biggest thank you to this sweet, loving, talented young lady that made my whole life's work come true. i mean, i've only been a pro on this show for two years after leaving dancing with the stars ireland as one of their professionals but, i've been waiting for a moment like this for my whole life. and, now it's finally happened and it...it's all thanks to this lovely young lady right next to me! you are extraordinary, rylee! i mean, what a human being you are, right? you are something else and, i just love you, i really do so, i just gotta also say the biggest thank you to your lovely fiancé ollie for letting me steal you and ultimately trusting me in taking care of her *laughter*. she is so understanding, so funny and she's just the best team player so, big up on you putting a ring on it ollie before someone else could *laughter*..." kai trailed off before he could get anymore emotional as rylee giggled softly before racking her brain with anything else to say
with some encouragement from claudia, rylee finally found the words to say to explain how much kai and the entire experience meant to her, "...i...i just want to say, you are so incredible, kai and you always pushed me to be the person i always wanted myself to be. and, you always had the utmost belief in my than i sometimes had in myself! you already know what an amazing teacher you are but, i just feel like i haven't expressed to you enough what a great friend you are because this entire journey *laughter* it was always you that was there for me when my friends and family weren't able to be. and, i just can't thank you enough for what you've done these last thirteen weeks of this season in my life like, you're so amazing and i am so grateful i was gifted as having you as my pro and as a best friend. we've gone through so much together and i just want you to know and remember that no matter what happens, no matter where we go in life after this and when we next see each other after this, i hope you never forget that you'll always have a piece of my heart, kai. and you'll never ever be forgotten as the person who truly gave me back my joy," rylee sobbed at the end as kai tearfully chuckled as he swiped rylee up in a hug as he quietly thanked her in the hug
the studio audience, judges, hosts and fellow contestants then showered the winners in applause and cheers.
"congratulations..."
"...we did it!"
"yes, you did it! the glitterball trophy is yours! your strictly come dancing champions 2022...you can lift it up!" after some hesitations as to who was going to pick it up, rylee just went for it and lifted up the trophy whilst kai hugged from behind as sparkles flew and cheers were heard from probably a couple of countries let alone the next couple of counties over because of how loud everyone in the studio was
rylee and kai celebrated as claudia and tess finished up the show, closing it out for one final time for the year before the christmas special. after once again, congratulating kai and rylee as the 2022 strictly champions, westlife's "world of our own" played in the background. it played as the winning couple danced together for one last final time as the other contestants stormed the stage. however, it truly couldn't have been a winning moment if the two winners weren't lifted up in the air. so, the contestants parted ways to let the filan and westlife families through to have the honour in lifting up the winners.
then, when the show finally went off the air, shane, nicky and kian, who had been the three holding up rylee, let their sister and niece to the floor. only for her to be picked right back up again by her fiancé as they celebrated together. the contestants and family then go wild as the engaged couple kissed which made the couple giggle. then, people started to post on their social media about rylee and kai's amazing win after strictly's instagram post. rylee then posted her own, posting one last weekly strictly come dancing update before announcing in that very same post that she and kai had indeed won the show!

ryleefilan even though it does break my heart to post my final strictly come dancing weekly update, here she is. strictly come dancing final 2022: slides one and two" kai and i hardcore rehearsing for last weekend's final. slide three: a polaroid of ollie and me after he had surprised me during a filmed vt rehearsal after he had come home from army deployment overseas. slide four: me looking really angsty or as i like to call my "not so nicky, rylee look". slide five: me and nicole celebrating after the finals at the beach (photo taken by the lovely mr shane filan, ze big brother). slide six: me and aunty jodi having some cheeky drinky-poos (taken by the lovely uncle kian after refusing to join the photo) and slide seven: what the hell, kai and i are the winners of strictly come dancing 2022! so yeah, if you've been living under a rock or just haven't been paying any attention lately, let alone the final itself, spoiler alert, kai and i are the 2022 strictly champions! the reason why you saw the rest of the casts' posts before mine, or if you haven't, i'm the last one to post about this. and it's because i truly just wanted to wait until everyone else had posted about it since they clearly were able to and i'm glad they did. all of them had such lovely things to say and it was beautiful reading all of them so, thank you. and, no, i wasn't "gatekeeping" the information of my own strictly win, it was truly just because i wanted to wait. i also wanted my emotions to be brought back down to earth after being on such a high and when i first tried to write this caption, it was completely unintelligible and made no sense whatsoever. which also ties into the reason why the first thing that came out of my mouth after kai and i were announced as the winners was "ummm....it feels pretty cool?" because i just had absolutely no idea what to say and because i was so overwhelmed. it was also because i saw my family reacting and they were just so estactic that it completely blindsided me when tess had asked me to say something when kai didn't first. however, in saying that, of course, i have loads more photos of the final of strictly that will be posted later so the rest of my heartfelt words and thanks will be included in those posts! okay bye, i love you!

𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐰𝐨 | 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭
it was friday evening and the night before the final of strictly come dancing 2022. and, alongside rylee filan and her partner kai widdrington, all of the remaining couples were on the "it takes two show" to talk with the hosts, rylan and janette. talking about all things about their strictly journeys, their three dances for tomorrow night's finale and many more.
in her skin-tight maxi dress, heels and his button-down shirt, jeans and polished shoes, rylee and kai sat in their it takes two interview with rylan clark about their strictly journey. rylee was downright excited as was kai. however, he was a lot more emotional about the whole thing than he thought he would be. especially considering this time last year, whilst he was technically a 2021 finalist, he wasn't able to compete for the glitterball. and that was due to his celebrity partner, aj odudu's ankle injury. this meant that this was his first actual year going up for the glitterball trophy in the strictly come dancing final.
rylan had introduced their vt package for their strictly come dancing journey. and, in all honesty for the two of them, it felt so bizarre to be watching all of that content. from the last twelve weeks of their thirteen-week journey on the show together. they watched in complete awe and content as it all suddenly finished too quickly. it had now returned back to the duo and rylan on camera.
rylan smiled, "awe, that was amazing to watch, wasn't it? congratulations, you're in the final!" he cheered as rylee and kai chuckle as they hold hands, one leg crossed over the other
"how are you feeling after watching that?" he asks as kai immediately turns to rylee who giggles, responding
~
after wauting for what felt liek years, it had finally come to the moment that was the be-all or end-all for the remaining three contestants left. rylee and kai stood closest to the right of the stage right where her family sat, the other two couples on their left side, which she felt good about because it meant that she was right in the eye-line of her family. and, if she needed them, she could focus her eyes and concentration on them if she could just bring herself to do it and it would make her feel better. it all just seemed absolutely terrifying for rylee. sure, she had gone through twleve weeks, not including tonight, of strictly come dancing results but, it was still the first time she was on a competition show like this let alone in general. holding kai's hand in a double lock with her own, she couldn't bear looking up to face anyone. not even her family like she thought she'd be able to do. comforting her as best as he could, kai only wished that he could do all he could to make rylee feel less scared, especially since she had just spent all these weeks so closed off and basically hidden away from everyone to all of a sudden opening herself up. sharing her whole life with the world in a matter of moments during the final, he only wished he could have switched places with the young girl. however, he couldn't take her fear away or her nausea but what he could do was comfort her and take care of her like he's done the last thirteen weeks. they painstakingly waited for the final results and to who the hell was lifting this goddamn strictly glitterball trophy!
and finally, it was time to find out the winner of strictly come dancing 2022, "rylee & kai, molly & carlos and hamza & jowita, the votes have been counted and independently verified. and now we can reveal the strictly come dancing champions are..."

WIP Ponders...
Does anyone else ever think about all the words you've written that no one will ever read? All the manuscripts that didn't get anywhere but built your skills as a writer so that people enjoy reading the things you put out there now? Because I have been thinking about this.
I've been contemplating whether Facing the Music is a WIP I envisage publishing one day, or if I'm still working on it for sentimental reasons. I have no issues with writing something just for myself, but if it is just for me, surely there's no reason to feel guilty or hit a wall with it. I don't want to abandon it, but I'm also not sure it's worth the investment I put into it sometimes. I don't know.
This got me thinking about things I've written in the past. Tens of thousands of words on projects that I'm never likely to revisit. I recently found an 80k draft of a fantasy novel that I wrote in 2016. There are multiple early attempts at a retelling of The Nutcracker. Operation: Sugarplum eventually got there but I went in all sorts of directions before I managed that. The earliest version of Facing the Music is 93k, but a lot of that would no longer be usable if I did pursue my current plans for it, though on the other hand, there are gaps in the current outline that might be filled by some of that old content.
As I wrote 8000 words on Wonderland in July, I was excited. When I started writing fanfiction again, I was excited. I was so psyched to write each day. I don't have the same excitement for Facing the Music, except occasionally. Every time I start working on it again, I grind to a halt pretty quickly. I've often said that I will write this story because the characters won't leave me alone otherwise. They're fictional characters. I don't actually have an obligation to them, even if it doesn't feel that way sometimes. Do I feel like I have an obligation to myself to finish this story? If so, why?
I think it might be because I feel like all the time I've put into it so far is wasted if I don't see the project through. 93k on one draft, 23k on this current one, plus however many in between. And no, I don't know what makes this WIP different to those other ones I mentioned, those that are definitely abandoned. It just is.
I'm not going to come to big some "let it go" epiphany at the end of this post [insert Elsa gif of your choice here]. Though in the shorter term, I think writing this out has helped me to not feel guilty about working on something else that is more appealing this month, rather than trying to stick with Facing the Music because that's what I said I would do in August.
So I'm going to go and play more with this Beauty and the Beast-inspired idea I had.

Is that post I reblogged about warm places not being depicted as homey very often in pop culture why I keep making settings tropical? I don't even like being very warm. I'd go to far north Queensland every so often when my grandparents were alive, and I spent every second I wasn't in air conditioning with general background discomfort. (Except during the 2012 eclipse, which was extremely worth it)
But like, there's a hole there. In potential settings. If I can set a story in any climate, and warm climates cover a pretty significant portion of the planet, then why not?
One of my earliest developed settings, which I came up with because if you like writing then you Have to write a novel, kind of ended up having a Canberra-like climate as the characters' home climate. Which is fairly temperate, though maybe on the warmish side. They spend most of the story in a much colder region, as winter sets in, so that's their culture shock and adventure location stuff.
But the next novel idea I came up with, because I was feeling mired with that other one, is definitely in a tropical location, which is where the characters live. I'm pretty sure it's in a rainforest climate, although I haven't done much actual writing in the setting. I think I wanted to finish the world map first, and work out the exact climate from there.
Another story in the same world, which I have written and just needs a final editing pass now, is on the other side of the world but still in the tropics, since I mention the wet season and the dry season. Their origin myth involves the world being thawed out of an icy wasteland, but there's no ice in the story.
And there's another setting that I actually get excited about sometimes, which has the working title of "rainforest story". One of the main characters ran away from her home to the rainforest, but her home is also very warm. It's just not rainforest. It's farms, mostly. In the bit I've written, I even mention that her family grows cashews.
I've got this story with the working title "glass golem story", which was based on a dream, but the dream didn't specify that the characters live in a fantasy Amazon Rainforest-ish setting. They spend most of the story under the ocean, too. They're just from the fantasy Amazon. They also have matching hair and eye colours and are former child soldiers who escaped and formed a village together... that was a weird one.
Also, there's the setting that would be tropical in climate, except some guy created an implausibly giant mountain in the south thousands of years ago, and that messed up the local climate. The north is still tropical, but the characters are from the south. That one's a game setting, and I wanted to have a lot of different climates. Guess what magical geography the characters end up having to climb! At least that's what I'm planning.
I think maybe I just like setting things in rainforests.

I have no idea. Genuinely. The only thing I can say with certainty is I've considered myself a fan for over 10 years. My earliest memory of PnF is watching it at a neighbors house because they had cable... and I already knew at that time that I liked that show and had seen it before and was excited it was on. I probably became an actual fan once I was able to stream it off Netflix (so like 2010ish?), but I liked the show even before then. I loved the show before I even knew what fan culture was. It was one of two shows I would choose when I had tv control as a kid (the other being AtLA) and was a huge part of my childhood. I would say I really started paying more attention to the fandom during MML's run though.
Phineas and Ferb. it was still running when I got into the show. I've seen all three and I love all three. Though I'd also like to give credit to discovering Milo not from any announcements but from seeing it with my family in a hotel room and going this is actually pretty good... wait a minute. So I think its fair to say I almost became a Milo fan separate from me being a PnF fan. PnF's biggest strength is its structure, and the uniqueness of its characters, though it's weakness is the way its anchored to the status quo leaving little room for development in the stories biggest plotlines and for the future, as well as a lack of stakes or long term intrigue. Maybe not a weakness per se, but it is something I prefer about MML. MML's biggest strength is the way the more intense stakes and the more streamlined plot focus and it's weakness is its over reliance on Phineas and Ferb especially in its second season and a somewhat underdeveloped extended cast (But that has far more to do with episode count than anything). H&G has a weak first episode, and generally weaker main premise and many of its villains aren't the most memorable imo, but the character dynamics are top tier.
I've been around the internet for a while, so I've stalked the PnF fandom for years, in regards to fanart and fanfics, so not so much interacting with the fans themselves... so I'm not so well versed in fandom history. But I think the fandom is pretty chill. My recent interactions have been very positive!
Again, just starting to interact with the fandom, but it's probably the most welcome I've felt in a fandom, because I'm usually far to nervous to interact. But I write fanfiction and analysis mostly. I've only recently began finishing/posting it though. I've seen all major dwampyverse related on Youtube, and read a lot on Ao3. I did read from FFN back in the day, and stalked DeviantArt. Recently was Milovember which I did about 2/3 of (IRL got in the way), and some of us wrote Morning Routine fics for the Murphy's which was fun!
Excited about it, but also prepared for it to not be as good as I want it to be. I'm sure it will be at least as good as CATU which I found to be pretty fun. Even if it isn't as good as the original PnF it should still be fun. I'm disappointed we aren't getting MML S3 and would really prefer that, and it already had a great ending, and it's kind of a symptom of a larger problem in the media landscape. But outside of all those other implications I'm excited. (And really, really hoping for some MML kind of episodes the same way MML had some PnF episodes and PnF had some Fireside girl and other gimmicky episodes. At the very least some cameos).
Input needed
Hey, fellow Dwampyverse fans! I need some input for a silly little thing I'm working on. Please put your responses in my notes (replies, reblogs, etc. inbox/messages is also fine). I want to get answers from new fans, old fans, and everyone in between!
How did you hear about the Dwampyverse or any piece of it, and when did you start considering yourself a "fan"?
Which show did you watch first? Which one(s) have you not seen? What do you like and dislike about the one(s) you have seen? What are you excited for and not excited for about the one(s) you have not seen/what positives and negatives have you heard?
What is your impression of the fans themselves? How would you describe the fans you've interacted with/seen around the internet? What have you heard about them that contrasts with your personal experience, if anything? Describe an experience you shared with members of the Dwampyverse fandom that stuck out to you.
What experience do you have with the fandom thus far? What fandom-related events have you heard about? Name the first ones you can list off the top of your head. Have you participated in them, and how did that go? Do you have any fanartists or fanwriters that you really like in particular? Do you follow any YouTube channels related to the Dwampyverse? Do you write fanfiction, make fanart, post/lurk on social media, or a secret fourth thing?
How do you feel about the PnF revival coming out next year?

Before I publish the story id like to thank @lenle-g from the bottom of my heart for being patient with me, being nice to me the whole time, and for making my story even better and more exciting. Without her I would have stayed in my normal, not that good English story. so thank you for everything!!! <3<3
And here's my part at @tagminibang submission:)

Scott, no!!! No way! I am not going to give any lectures to anyone." John's voice comes out tight. "Especially not in front of a crowd. No way."
"Why not?" Scott raises a brow, his voice honeyed with ‘big brother wants something’. "It's not like you're gonna get executed by some children just for talking space at them, right? You love talking about space. It's all I've heard since you were, like, seven."
"No, that's not it." There's a sharp shake of the ginger’s head, "Scott, come on!" John knows for a fact that his oldest brother knows he's the most socially awkward person to have ever lived on Tracy Island (and maybe the entire planet). "You’ve lived with me long enough to know how much I hate social.... anything." John complains. "Why would you ever think I'd want to do this?""
"Well, yes, I know that," Scott shrugs, "I've seen that look you get on your face when there's a lot of people around." He’s well aware that his brother is an introvert who hates socializing with anyone, so he quickly changes the subject to try and make his younger brother feel a little more at ease. "But hey... everyone knows how much you like it when anyone talks about space or anything about astronomy. You'd be amazing at it."
"That's a different thing." John says flatly. Flattery, it seems, wont get Scott very far. "It's like, whenever you guys ask me anything about space, I like to answer them for you, but from random people…? And in huge crowds? I just simply can't." Surely he doesn’t have to explain himself much more than that?
"Oh trust me, everything is going to be fine." Scott was a flippant hand around, talking without really thinking, because all he wants is for his brother to get out of Thunderbird 5, to visit Earth for a little bit, to mingle with people a little. It can't be that bad. "If anything happens, Gordon and Alan'll be in Thunderbird Five doing Space Monitor duty, me and Virgil are gonna keep an eye on everything, and you’re in safe hands with Lady Penelope and Parker. It's all set up, so please go have some fun for once and teach the children something cool."
"My answer is still no." John says persistently, without hesitation. He's pretty sure it'd be worse than being in the middle of a hurricane, or testing one of his Grandma's new cooking experiments. It’s lucky Scott misses his involuntary shudder.
Scott, though, is so done with him at this point, that he's pretty sure there's no choice but to use plan b and hope that that works instead on his unwilling, stubborn, red haired brother. They've got to get him down from orbit and to that lecture somehow. Scott's just not going to stand for anything else.
"Are you sure that's your last answer?" Scott asks, with a heavy sigh, already planning the best way to call in the big guns.
"Yes," John scowls, arms folded. "Yes, it is."
They'll see about that.
...
"Is everything ready?" John adjusts his sleeves, smoothing down his vest and putting the last touches on his collar. Neat, simple, formal. Can't go wrong. "My presentation papers, laptop, and my mini simple dimple?”
"Yes, all in the bag." Scott calls back, rapidly checking everything, "But do you really need that little fidget thing of yours?" He picks his younger brother's old toy up between forefinger and thumb to examine it, remembering the day John made their Mom buy it for when he gets stressed.
"What fidge- oh, yes I need it." The look on John's face leaves no doubt about that. "I've used it ever since Mom bought it for me."
"Hey… Mom would've been proud of you, you know?” Scott tells him, in a quick flash of brotherly pride. “For, you know, going out of your safe zone for a little while and teaching the children and all that."
"Yeah, I know…" John finds him a nervous smile, "But I'm not doing this voluntarily, you've forced me with that plan b of yours."
The second John says that Scott's cheeks dimple, the corners of his eyes crinkle, and he grins victoriously, his teeth a bright white in the earliest rays of morning sun.
“All I had to do was make a call." He shrugs, "Lady Penelope did all the talking and somehow convinced you to go." Scott got a little more excited. He took a couple of steps forward, slightly standing on his toes reaching John's level asking"How did she convince you?" Clearly waiting teasingly for an answer to come out of John's lips
"Huhhhh." John exhales loudly, a little despairing. "She promised me we'd go to the Pagasa Astronomical Observatory after I finish the lecture with the children." He shrugs, keeping his eyes down, embarrassed.
"The what now?" Scott stares at him, thoroughly confused.
"The Pagasa Astronomical Observatory in the Philippines.” John says, like that was obvious, “It's equipped with a 45-cm computer-based telescope. It's so powerful that astronomers and astronomy enthusiasts can now conduct effective observations of stellar bodies and other distant space objects! Scott, it’s been my dream to go since I was, like, 17."
Scott always knew how much of an astrophile his younger brother is; he never cared about his physical appearance, nor his poor eating habits and he always used to make excuses to read his books alone, yet no one has ever interfered in his personal life.
"Okay okay space lover boy,” Scott grins at him. He'd expected Penny to be persuasive, but resigning herself to hours stuck with John in full excited-about-space mode would hardly be in his top ten. Either he's gonna owe her one, or Penny's more resilient than him. “You can go, no one is holding you back."
The short silence between them was broken by a ringing sound from a nearby table, which John answers.
“...Mhm, yes? Oh, the lecture." It must be Penelope calling, "Yeah, I'm ready, I'll head out now." John grabs his bag, wandering toward where the FAB1 must already be idling on the Tracy runway. "Time to go."
"Mhm,” Scott makes an agreeable noise, watching him go. “Please stay safe and please don't make an idiot of yourself." He's teasing… mostly.
"Yeah yeah," John waves at him over his shoulder, not even looking back. "I won't."
…
"Are we there yet?" Despite the consistently amazing views out of FAB1’s windows during the flight, John’s found himself mostly looking down, fidgeting with his fingers. He’s worrying, just a little, about what awaits him in the Philippines - a whole different tropical island to his own, though still in the South of the Pacific Ocean.
"Just give Parker ten more minutes, darling,” Her Ladyship smiles at him, “We'll arrive in no time."
There’s a moment of silence before, unexpectedly, it’s broken by a call flashing up from, of all places, Thunderbird Five. There’s a prickly sense of discomfort as John realises that, of course, it’s not him calling. Gordon must be trying to reach them.
"Heeeeey Lady Penelope,” The kid greets, as Penny flicks it on, seemingly a lot less bothered by the change than he is. “Oh, and Mr. Tracy.” There’s a huge smirk on his face. “How's our newest teacher holding up?"
"Firstly, my name is John.” John points out, flatly, “Second, I'm not your teacher so please don’t call me Mr. Tracy ever again. Thirdly…” He concedes, quirking an eyebrow, “Yeah, I'm good for now, but fourth… How are you holding up, up there in my Thunderbird? She’s not much like Four, is she?"
"Ooooooooo that's a good question,” Gordon looks half like he’s considering it, half like he’s really missing his own ‘bird. “I'm holding up pretty well thanks to Alan. He’s taken all the Monitor duty stuff, so all I gotta do is keep an eye on you guys." He sounds a bit… sarcastic about that. “It’s pretty boring, honestly. How do you survive up here without a pool?”
"Young Master Gordon, are you quite done talking?" Parker glances, unimpressed, at the little floating hologram of John’s brother in his rearview mirror, "Because we're about to arrive at our destination."
"Huh… oh yeah,” Gordon doesn’t seem too bothered about that, but he waves merrily at them all the same, “Okay bye and John, please have fun, you too Lady Penelope, okay bye guys."
It’s only a few moments later that Parker opens his mouth to tell them that they’ve arrived at Chino Roque Theater, pulling up out front to let them both climb out.
John's eyes widen: it’s nothing like what he saw on the internet. It was more enormous, more luminous, more spectacular than anything he’d seen or read online. All he remembers reading is that it's a sphere shaped building located in the Philippines, in Anilao Hill, but the pictures on the webpage didn’t do it justice like being there in person does.
The building was smooth and round; the auditorium shaped like a massive egg nestled in amongst the other buildings. They were early enough that the sun was just cresting the horizon, colouring the sky with reds and oranges, visible through the geometric front of the building - where giant triangles of glass intersect together to give the people inside an amazing view of the sky at night.
"M'lady, you and John can go ahead. I'll park FAB 1." Parker said, before going to the parking lot - unaware just how tiring and long his journey to find a place to park is going to be.
They both head inside the building, admiring the sweeping glass fractals of the roof high above them. It’s incredibly beautiful, really a feat of engineering. So much so, that John almost forgets why he’s even there, until he spots a couple of buses arriving on the other side of the building, and the panic sets in. He was expecting to be a little bit anxious, but this feels like his heart is going to beat right out of his chest. He presses a hand hard against it, trying to calm his racing pulse and stop the sudden shake of his fingers, and Penny must notice, because a little hand settles, ever so lightly, on his shoulder, drawing his attention to her.
"Hey John," Lady Penelope looks him steadily in the eye, projecting warmth and reassurance. "They're just a small, mixed group of children and teens. They can’t possibly hurt you, now can they? They just came to have a small lecture because all of them like space and astronomy just like you. Imagine yourself at their age, meeting a real life astronaut.” John tries very hard not to remind her who, exactly, his Father was, as she goes on - trying to visualise being a kid that didn’t get ‘take your son to work days’ at NASA’. It’s a pretty horrifying concept. “Most importantly,” Penny adds, “it's only for an hour or so, so you don't need to worry so much." She had to smile just to reassure him. “You’ll have filled their heads with space facts and be out before you know it.”
"O-okay,” John takes a deep, steadying breath, “I don't know if I'm supposed to trust you on this, or whatever, but I really don't have any other choice." He also wants to add that they forced him to go, but at the last second he remembers that they never forced him - he agreed to go because Lady Penelope promised him a trip to the observatory.
It seems like a pretty weak reason, now that he’s outside the stage door, knees shaking.
"Mhm, I think it's time to go inside.” She nudges him callously in the right direction, and John’s palms meeting the solid metal of the double doors is the only thing that keeps him from following gravity’s call and landing on his face. “Again, if anything happens, I'll be at the back of the room and I have a plan b if things get too much." John, pretty shocked by just how many plan b's the Lady Penelope might have prepared for the day, can only shake his head, bemused. “So stop worrying and get out there!”
She vanishes off into the atrium, and John can’t help the loud exhale that escapes his mouth before he musters up all the courage he can, and enters the room.
Bright lights startle him for a moment, and he’s pretty sure he does an awful, awkward impression of a blind baby giraffe as he stumbles out onto the stage and freezes as he notices the first smatterings of audience are already taking their seats.
The moment he placed his foot on the smooth wooden floor, his heart had started to beat faster, his hands began to sweat, the more steps he took forward the more he felt anxious. It was, he’ll think later, one of the toughest moments of his life, and he’s been to space. Multiple times.
Come on John. He tries to straighten up, shake off his anxiety, This can’t go worse than your first EVA.
Taking another deep breath, John waits patiently for all the attendees to take a seat inside the room. Waiting doesn’t help his anxiety levels at all, and he can feel them increasing by the second, but, determined, John doesn’t let it stop him from starting his lecture.
"H-Hello everybody,” He starts, incredibly conscious of the hushed silence that falls across his audience. “I'm John Tracy, M.Sci, PgDip, B.Lang Hons,” he rattles off his credentials, his nerves almost blurring them together, “I worked with NASA as an astronaut for three years before going… uh… solo in my astronomical studies, and I'll be your guest lecturer for the day.” He swallows around the lump in his throat, as a ripple of hushed oohhhs and ahhhs goes through the crowd. John’s pretty sure his face has gone bright red. “Thank you for having me at the Chino Roque Theater,” He goes on, before his embarrassment can bet the better of him, “I hope everyone’s had an amazing day so far. We'll be spending the next hour or so talking about astronomy and space physics, so shall we get started?" John thought it was a good opening, and yet his back was really wet from all the people's eyes on him. Glancing offstage, Penelope throws him a thumbs up, and he feels a little better.
"Um,” He blinks. “So does anyone here know how old the universe is?" John ventures, only to be surprised as almost everyone answers at once;
"Almost 13.8 billion years!"
"Yes,” The edge of a smile works its way onto John’s face. Clearly this was going to be a shout out the answer kind of lecture. He can work with that. “That's correct, now does anyone know how the universe started?"
"The Big Bang!" Most of them answer, and John feels a surge of relief. These guys really are into space.
"Okay, okay, not bad at all." He nods affirmatively at them, and the screen behind him lights up with an artist’s rendition of the Big Bang happening. "Now if I were to go and search ‘how old is the universe’ in, say, Google, the answer would be 13,772 billion years. It’d be the same thing if we looked at NASA, or even Wikipedia - so how did people get to know the age of the universe? How do you even start calculating something that old? Well I'm going to explain it for you in two ways: the good, nice way, and the kinda not that good and not that scientific way." There’s a bit of an awkward pause as John wonders whether or not he’s explained that well. When only silence greets him, he very quickly realises he needs to press on.
"So, uh, the good way.” He folds his fingers together behind his back, trying to resist the urge to fidget. “Well, in the middle of the previous century, as telescopes developed, we noticed something strange. We found that stars in very distant galaxies tend to look red… Umm, which is something that’s not supposed to happen.” A chuckle escapes John and, to his relief, the audience laughs with him. Scott never gets his space jokes. “So why’s that?” He asks, “See, if a chemical element gains or loses energy it’ll emit light in certain frequencies, thereby creating certain colors.” A small movement of his hand signals the slide to change, and a picture of the visible section of the electromagnetic spectrum appears, colouring the room with rainbow light. “For example,” John goes on, bathed in blue and violet, “Consider something like… a desk lamp, as like an element. If you give a lamp electrical energy, it’ll release that energy in the form of heat and light, yeah?" There’s a murmur of uncertain understanding in the room. “Electricity goes in, the bulb gets hot, and it gives off light. Well, we know stars do pretty much the same thing - only powered by nuclear fusion rather than a nine volt plug.”
"From studies of the sun and stars that are near Earth, we know that they’re made of helium and hydrogen, yes?” There’s another murmur of agreement in John’s crowd, “Well, hydrogen and helium can create red light, but they don't have the ability to create these shades of red that we see in deep space." The slide behind John clicks to a comparison of the two shades, on two different stars - making the difference clear.
"So, if stars are made of helium and hydrogen then why do distant stars have different colours? Are their compositions different?uh, well It’s possible, but not likely. The strongest explanation is that the color difference is due to the movement of the stars." The room gives a soft gasp at this news, and John knows he’s onto something good.
"So there's something called the redshift and blueshift phenomenon that says that if an object radiates light and approaches you, the color of the light begins to turn blue, and if the object is moving away from you, the color will turn red. This happens because the wavelength of light contracts and expands with movement meaning that something stretching equals red and contraction equals blue."
"And the strange thing is,” John adds, his audience listening raptly, “That most, if not all, stars show the same behavior, so, if we think about it, if all stars are moving away from us, that means that they were close to us at some point, and if we follow their path, we find that everything in space meets at a point named ‘singularity’."
"It was believed, in the past, that everything in the universe, or at least in the visible part that we have observed, that is to say,” John flicks to a graphic on his next slide. “All the galaxies, planets and stars, were all gathered at one point - the singularity. The theory is that this point exploded in what we call the ‘Big Bang’, and from that time onward, the universe has been in constant expansion.”
"So it’s with data from this knowledge that we can calculate the age of the universe:” With a wave of his hand, John puts a series of bullet points up on the screen behind him, then reads them aloud.
“One, the universe began as a very small, single point.” He reaffirms, “Two, the universe is constantly expanding outward from that point, and three, from these we have the ability to calculate the expansion rate of the universe, by calculating the speed of the stars that are moving away from us. If we take the furthest accelerations and enter them into this equation,” John’s board merrily does it’s thing behind him, “Then, we get the age of the universe."
"And, so we don't forget, all this talking was about the good way. There is another way to calculate the age of the universe, the, uh, not as good way, or, more specifically, the less scientific way.” A ripple of laughter goes through John’s audience - and he relaxes a little more. Maybe Scott was right. Maybe these are his kind of people. Scott’s never laughed at a space joke for sure. “There's no problem with it,” He quietens them again with a gentle gesture, “and it does support our theory and calculations, so I guess we should talk about it."
"Since ancient times, humans have been looking at the sky, watching the stars, and giving them names like Cygnus, Canis Major, Orion.” All names any young astronomer in the Southern Hemisphere would recognise, and be able to enthusiastically point out in the night sky. “In those days, there wasn't the internet so they were looking up at the stars instead.” Much like John himself, when he’d been a boy.
“As a way of calculating the age of the universe, astronomers set out to search for the oldest celestial bodies in space.” He goes on to explain, “The idea was that if we find a star whose age equals X, then the age of the universe must be greater than the number X. So we pointed our telescopes up there and started trying to find out their ages from birth, to youth, to their old age until their end."
"Can anyone guess the age of the oldest star we've found?" A lot of answers were guessed, some of them were pretty close, but some, amusingly, were way too far. "Ok, ok…” John puts his hands up to pacify his excited crowd, “Umm I see there are a lot of answers, but the oldest star people discovered was actually estimated to be 13.5 billion years old. The HD-140283, or as you might know it, the Methuselah Star. That number is very close, you’ll notice, to our estimation of the age of the universe."
"But if we found a star that is 13.5 billion years old today, then we could find an even older star next week and that would ruin all of that,” He chuckles, mostly to himself, “We also should note that this method alone isn't suitable for determining the universe’s age, but as long as we have two methods with corroborative results, we can be reassured that the estimate is correct.” He pauses for a second, “So, does anyone have questions?" A couple of hands raised, and John found himself suddenly answering a lot of questions - but he managed all of them despite his fear of the huge crowd.
He’s starting to feel more than a little overwhelmed.
"Umm… W-well that was a lot of questions,” John tries to pull it back in, his allotted lecture time ticking away on the big clock at the back of the hall. He feels a little panicky from the bombardment, and his palms have gone sweaty. “We’d better move on.” To distract himself from the people, as much as anything, “Our next topic is the theory of relativity, so l-let's get started on that."
Lady Penelope, from her fold-out seat at the back of the room, frowns. It’s clear John’s terrified and she wants to use plan b, but as long as he’s still standing on his feet, and giving the lecture, he's probably fine for now. If anything, it’d cause more of a disruption to drag him away now.
"Umm,” John takes a breath, trying to centre himself in the science of it all. “Let's start with a supposition, a hypothesis if you like, and consider it together. Okay, you’ll have to bear with me on this one, but let us suppose that we were all asleep, and the universe suddenly inflated by a thousand times.” There’s a murmur in the crowd at how odd everything abruptly getting that much bigger sounds, “Your bed, your pillow, your desk,” John extrapolates, “even the meter we measure stuff with. If humans became a thousand times bigger, when we woke up would we feel something strange? Would we even notice anything had changed? You’d think so, but no.” John’s settling back into his rhythm now, “So why is that? Because the bed and everything became a thousand times more inflated and our bodies also inflated a thousand times, with everything scaling in parallel relation to each other so that this percentage, this scale, was preserved throughout the room. You’d never know the difference."
"Henri Poincaré, the well known mathematician and theoretical physicist, says that we will never be able to discover that something like this has happened, even if we use all the mathematics and calculations ever invented.” John drives the point home with another illustrated slide, “This hypothesis is called the Poincaré hypothesis, and simply, because the meter with which we measure things will have also expanded a thousand times, there’s never going to be any equation or calculation or any analysis possible that could lead us to the truth, because the ratio is preserved in all parts."
"Now, this is important, because the same thing also happens with time. If everything suddenly got a thousand times faster, we’d still never feel anything different. Why’s that?” He asks, rhetorically, “Because time is also a thousand times faster, your heartbeat is also a thousand times faster, your body would function a thousand times faster to keep up with it all. As long as everything is increased by the same amount, the ratio is preserved, and none of us will be able to detect any change."
"So Poincaré asked the scientific community; is there no way to know that time increased or that things inflated?" John tells the room, "Well, it was Albert Einstein who answered him, deciding that the one and only way to tell, would be to have someone observing what happened to the world from another galaxy, from another world, lightyears away. For someone to point a telescope in our direction, and look through it at us, and say what happened to the Earth? Why are humans walking a thousand times faster than in the past? But this person who realized the situation,” The astronaut waves a flippant hand, starting to feel much more confident again, “would have to be a person standing on a fixed external platform in a different world, so that what happened to us was not also happening to him."
"But, as Einstein commented, this hypothesis is impossible for a simple reason and it's that there is no fixed platform in the universe - the entirety of it is in constant, turbulent motion. For example, the Earth rotates at a speed of 460 meters per second, revolving around the sun at 30 kilometers per second, and at the same time, the sun and it’s planets and dwarf planets and moons and asteroids, all revolve around our galaxy, The Milky Way, at a speed of 300 kilometres per second, and so the whole universe revolves. That's,” John takes a deep breath, finding himself out of air after so much explaining, “why it's impossible for us humans to completely accurately judge the motion of any astral body."
"Because there is no fixed berth, we can only offer relativity. This is the first part of the theory that Einstein came up with, in summary; it cannot be said that the monotony of a body is absolute motion."
"Another thing he said was that, because of the vastness of the universe, it’s impossible to synchronize, what does that mean? Well, I will give you an example.” He flicks his slide, “Say I’m a person in the Philippines, and I'm talking to someone from the United States. We synchronize, and hear each other in real time, because we have a method of fast communication. I can hold my device and say; hello, how are you?” John holds up the slim, sliver slice of his phone to show the audience, “How’s the weather there? And they’d answer me with something like; I’m fine thank you, it's night here so it’s a bit hard to tell what the weather’s doing! What’s the weather like there? And I’d answer them; it's daytime, and maybe ask them something like, what are you eating? They’d answer me; a burger, and then I’d tell them that I'm eating kaldereta, and it’s much better than a burger."
In the audience Penny quietly hopes that Gordon, who's probably listening in with the rest of his brother’s, missed the fact John was making jokes on stage. The poor little bugger’ll never live it down otherwise.
"These two events, each person talking to the other, are compatible.” John goes on, absolutely oblivious, “It’s possible because the two wireless devices, be they mobile phones or more sophisticated comms systems, are on the same globe, creating a fast means of communication.”
"But,” John postulates, “If I was talking to someone from another galaxy and I used the same means of communication to make a call, do you know how long it would take to get to them? It would be about five to six thousand years until my signal reaches the phone of our friend, and they’ll have married, had children and died, and their children would have married and had children and died, and so on, for thousands of years before then."
"And that's why it's impossible to synchronize between the ends of the universe,” John balances his palms like he’s weighing two invisible ends, “It rather puts a damper on our chances of finding and communicating with extraterrestrial life, for sure, but at least it’s possible to synchronize within one system, like the system of the Earth. "
"This is a thing that also applies to light, for example: any star you could look up and see now, the light emanating from it may be coming from thousands of years ago. This means that it’s possible that the star you see shining could have exploded and disappeared, and hasn't existed for a long time. Why? Because it takes a couple of thousand years for the light from that explosion to reach us."
"There isn’t any proof for the hypothesis that the universe is linked by time, but the thing that happens that we’re sure of is that the universe is made up of, sort of, separate islands of different times that have no connection between them. The connection between movement and time in space is something we all know about, for example, a day on Earth equals twenty-four hours, yes?” There’s a chorus of agreement from the audience, “But on Saturn, a day is ten hours because it rotates faster. Astonishingly, a day on Mercury is the same as fifty-eight whole Earth days, which, infact, is also a Mercurian year, because the planet revolves around the sun for the exact same period as it revolves around itself."
"Okay, so, to what extent is movement related to time?” John asks, well and truly into this whole teaching thing now, “Well, Einstein was the first person to discover the connection between them and suggested that; suppose you’re on board a very fast rocket, 100,000 miles per hour for example. The mechanical watch on your wrist would be delayed over the flight, but you wouldn’t feel like time is being delayed. Why’s that? It’s because the rhythm of your heart would slow down - all of the vital processes in your body that are inside the rocket will slow down."
"As you move more, something called the dilation of time will happen.” He steps to the side, as if to illustrate the point, only to find himself stumbling a little, like if the ground beneath his feet had moved. “T-Time slows down,” John tries to recover it smoothly, but everything’s starting to feel, weirdly, like it’s shaking, and he doesn’t think it’s the anxiety anymore, “and that's-"
John doesn’t get to finish his sentence because there’s an abrupt shift and a loud cracking from under him, and getting off the stage suddenly seems like a good idea. Someone screams outside, and the volume in the room skyrockets as the children start panicking. John’s one hundred percent sure this wasn't anything planned.
He knew he shouldn't have come.
Earthquake? He wonders first, then; Tsunami? Ground slip? Hurricane? Whichever it is, John has to prioritise calming the people and evacuating them out of the building. The giant glass panels above them are trembling with the force of the shaking, and, as a professional at this sort of thing, Thunderbird Five’s Space Monitor doesn’t like the look of it one bit.
"Everyone calm down,” He has to shout to make himself heard over the roar of people, even with the microphones pointed his way, “This is a normal thing. All we have to do is evacuate immediately, as calmly. as. possible. I don't want anyone crowding the exits, do you all understand what I just said?" The front rows, white faced with fear, nod encouragingly at him, and he watches as they begin to lead the way toward the glowing green signs that signal the emergency exits. Immediately after making sure the crowd is moving, John pulls up his comm to contact Gordon.
"Gordon, are you on the line?” John’s a little breathless and he climbs down from the precarious stage, into the throng of terrified bodies, “We have a situation in here."
"Let me guess, you caused it?" Gordon seems so excited to hear something other than his brother's boring lecture that humour has outweighed his professionalism.
"Gordon,” John grits his teeth, “I'm being serious right now, there was a huge movement in the ground beneath the Chino Roque Theater, and it's still ongoing. Tell Alan to do a check on what's happening beneath us using the Ground Penetrating Radar." He orders.
"F.A.B." Comes the far more serious response, before Gordon clicks off the line to do just that. Squashing down any fear he’d about the now swelling, shuffling crowd, John opens his arms wide and walks toward them, the motion sort of like he’s trying to herd sheep, as he tries to evacuate the people safely out of the building.
He’s not exactly an expert at being on the scene during rescues.
"John, there's a landslide going on right now,” Alan’s worried little voice comes ringing out of his comm speakers, “Right next to the theatre. You’d better get out of there. I’m monitoring the situation, but it’s looking like you’re going to need International Rescue to get you and the people out of there. The debris field is spreading fast." John would do almost anything to be up there instead, at his own screens. “I've contacted Virgil and Scott, I’m patching them through now.” Alan clicks Scott and Virgil, both clearly just finishing their suit up sequences, into the conversation. It seems important to keep them up to date with John's developing situation.
"Hey Mr. Tracy, how are you holding up?" Scott jokes over the roar of his launching Thunderbird, the sound filling the background of the call with white-noise, "Oh, and how was your lecture?" John thinks he sounds far too casual in contrast to the impending danger all around him.
"Oh my God, Scott, is now really the time?” John groans, and a kid with mousey blond hair not dissimilar to Alan’s looks up at him, very confused, before the astronaut waves him on, “You are an adult person,” He reminds his big brother, “Please don't be like Gordon right now. He’s practically still a child."
"Hey!” Gordon had clearly overheard the conversation between his brothers, and springs up to defend himself. “I'm only two or three years younger than you!" He complains, not about to do the math.
"Gordon, we don't have time for arguing about that now,” John frowns, “and Scott, I'm holding up alright at the moment. Please don't ask me anything about the lecture until I get back home." If his voice cracks a little on that last bit, he’ll never admit it.
"Okay, okay I won't ask anything about that,” Scott reassures him, his amused, big brother grin very much in place, “Keep on evacuating the people safely until we arrive John, you’re doing great. It won’t take us that long. ETA at 15,000 mph is sixteen minutes.” He reassures, “We’ll be there before you know it."
"F.A.B. Scott." He reluctantly signs off. Now that he’s finished talking with Scott, John’s pleased to see that a lot of people have already made their way out of the atrium’s three sets of double doors, evacuating the building to get as far away from the landslide as possible. His fingers itch to pull up the schematics from Thunderbird Five on his comm, no matter what the people around him might think. He quickly caves, and it feels worth it to be able to see the incoming tide of slipping land.
They don’t have much time.
“Let’s go!” He shouts, chivvying. He’s a little breathless with the tension, so he keeps things short. “Come on! Let’s move guys!”
From his vantage near the crumbling stage, John can make out Lady Penelope and Parker by the main doors, ushering people through, and the sight of them fills him instantly with immense relief.
“Okay, that's a good amount of people out.” John has to jog to catch up with them, skirting around a little old lady with a zimmer frame and taking a second to correct her course, “Lady Penelope, Parker, I think you should go and check on the people who’re out. They could have minor injuries from the stampede, and International Rescue are still ten minutes out. I'll make sure the last few stragglers exit safely."
Penelope just nods, pale and worried. Her blond brows are all pinched in together, nervous and Parker looks practically haggard as he claps a reassuring hand on John’s shoulder, her faithful old companion following her pink shape dutifully out the doors. Hopefully they’ll go make sure that no one was badly injured in any way.
Turning back to the slow cascade of cracking rubble behind him, John finds the stage area has been all but obliterated, and his heart aches for the patrons of the Chino Roque Theater who’ll have to rebuild from scratch when this is over. He imagines the Tracy fund can contribute a significant amount toward that though. They often do for worthy causes.
John pushes the damp curl of his slightly sweaty bangs out of his eyes and climbs over what looks like a twisted piece of ceiling girder toward the sound of people, possibly trapped stragglers, who are calling for help.
"I miss Thunderbird 5 so much,” John mutters, keeping it under his breath so that no one hears him, as his palms are scraped raw against the concrete he’s trying to clamber around. There’s a rippp of fabric on a jagged piece of metal and the knee of his previous pristine brown jeans meets much the same fate as his poor, scuffed hands. “Oh, come on!” He’s having no luck today, “I'd so rather be assisting the situation from space. I can’t believe I’m stuck here." John grumbles, to no one in particular. He’s just not built for this kind of thing. Heavy labour and getting sweaty pulling people out of scrap heaps is what his other brothers do. At least rescues in space don’t have all this… gravity to contend with.
"John?” The crackle of a comm cut’s across his complaints, “What’re you still doing in there?” Gordon’s voice breaks him from his thoughts, little brother’s tone heavy with concern. “The building could fall any moment! You're so lucky the landslide isn't moving very fast, but it’s not gonna stay that way forever." Gordon was really worried about the fact that his older brother was still inside. “It could engulf the building! You need to hurry it up, bro.”
"I'm evacuating the people as fast as I can,” John gets both hands under the armpits of a boy who couldn’t be older than seven, and swings him above a pile of rubble toward safety, “I'll be out in no ti- Ah!"
John’s voice gets cut off with a startled cry, and it takes Gordon a second or two, time John might not have, to remember how to breathe so that he can yell in any way coherently into his comm. His eyes are wide, his anxiety levels through the roof as he tries, and fails, to rouse his brother on the other end.
"SCOTT! You need to get there now.” Gordon’s aware that he’s totally losing his cool, panic creeping in over his weak layer of professionalism, “I just lost contact with John.” He gasps, “He was evacuating people and I heard him yell and now he’s not responding! And- and it's not just him. There were other people he was trying to get out."
"Hey Gordon,” Scott tries to keep his voice steady to inject some kind of stability into the conversation, “Don't lose your cool yet. I'm sure nothing that bad happened to John. Just stay your positive self, okay? I’m arriving right now and Virgil isn’t far behind me."
Thunderbird One is panning over the city, low enough to ruffle the hair of people looking up, but it’s not a problem until the usually so sure and steady pilot finds his hands nearly slipping off her controls as Scott catches his first, horrific glimpse of the building that he knows his younger brother is inside.
“What the…?”
The Chino Roque Theater is almost flat.
"Virgil,” Scott swallows hard to try and remove any of the tremor from his voice, “A-Are you seeing what I'm seeing right now?" He almost succeeds.
"Scott this isn't a joke, it looks like half of the building has come down with the landslide! John’s in there!" Virgil sounds more terrified than Scott thinks he’s ever heard him. What scares him the most is that the exit was on the side that has fallen in, which means that a lot of people are trapped under it, their John included. "Scott, we need to help them right now.
"Okay, here's the plan,” Scott’s hands tighten white-knuckled on the steering yoke, “You wear your exo-suit and go clear the debris out of the way so that we can save them, and I'll get rid of that roof with Thunderbird One and check for life signs. Remember that saving lives is our top priority, got it? No matter what’s happened to John."
"F.A.B." Virgil sounds incredibly tense. He lands Thunderbird Two as fast as he can in the crowded, limited space. Local people are beginning to make their way out of their houses to see what all the commotion is about, and the cramped city streets aren’t ideal for International Rescue’s four hundred and six ton workhorse.
Two’s pilot struggles into his exo-suit, rushing to get the Jaws of Life prepared despite Scott’s insistence that he focus and take things slow and sensible. It’s not long until he finds himself digging among the debris looking for buried people and, in the white rush of it all, Virgil’s not even sure how he got there.
"Scott,” he presses on his comm, “Please tell me you’ve got something?"
"Fortunately and thankfully yes,” It’s hard to find the hopefulness in big brother’s clipped Mobile Control voice, but it’s there to Virgil’s expert ear, drizzled in nervous relief. “I've got a whole cluster of life signs,” Scott reports, “BPM signalling in the green. "I think they’re just trapped under the debris." Alan’s echolocation report came back suggesting that there’s a big space under what could be folded sheet metal from the ceiling, that they’ve huddled in. I'm really sure there's nothing that bad, but still we have to continue otherwise it will take a bad turn for us and the people in there."
“I can use the grappling cables in Thunderbird One to take the strain off the roof,” Scott adds, “But I need you in there to get those people out.”
“Already on my way,” Virgil ducks under some rebar, skirting around the rubble and pulling away loose debris as he goes. His heart is loud in his own ears, and Virgil hopes the creak and groan of metal and concrete above him is Scott lifting the weight off the roof, keeping it from collapsing any further onto the people below, and not anything more sinister. Virgil gets peppered by a slide of small stones, but the roof holds steady.
He presses on until he catches sight of the cluster of around forty people, all huddled together around a tall, central figure with a shocking amount of rubble dust smeared over his face, and powdered through his ginger hair.
“John!” Two’s pilot makes a beeline for his brother, despite the fact three of the people are stuck under rubble. Clearly John’s in control of the situation here, and he’s never wanted a mission update from their Space Monitor so much in his life. He can’t help but hone in on the fact John's left arm is crudely wrapped in a piece of cloth from his sleeve, which he must’ve ripped off in order to tie it.
"You have to tell me exactly what happened,” Virgil drops the controls for the Jaws of Life, and grasps his brother’s biceps in both hands instead, resisting the very strong temptation to pull the spaceman in for a hug. “And what happened to your arm?!?" There’s a river of blood seeping from beneath the make-shift bandage, but John, it seems, isn’t bothered by it in the slightest.
"Not now Virgil.” His concerns get thoroughly dismissed, “We’ve got to get these people out of here, and then I'll tell you everything." Virgil didn't like the idea that something happened to his brother and he's silent about it, but after all John was right about saving the people first since his arm is under control for now.
John crouches by the nearest injured person; a pale, skinny teen with a sizable piece of rebar keeping him pinned.
“You’re gonna be out of there in just a second, Lito.” Virgil watches him reassuring the young man for a long moment, “Uh, Virgil?” John prompts. “Any time?”
“What?” He blinks, “Oh, yeah!” His brother is clearly waiting expectantly for him to use the Jaws of Life to get the poor kid out. "I’m on it, but you better tell me everything after we're done saving them." Virgil demands. “But, uh, Scott’s kind of holding the roof up right now, so you’re probably right.”
"Okay,” John literally rolls his eyes, busy stealing a pair of blue rubber gloves from the Med Kit Virgil brought with him, and snapping them on to protect his hands and the fine cuts he’d gotten from climbing over rubble. “I promise I'll tell you everything, but can we start actually rescuing them now?" Rolling his eyes right back, the bigger man uses his exosuit to heft the rubble off Lito, before John swoops in to apply pressure to his injuries.
“Give me the fold out stretcher from your sash.” He orders, hands bloodied “Then go get the next person out. Efifania, Sergio?” John beckons a pair of nearby dad’s in closer, clearly having singled them out as capable stretcher bearers. “Think you can manage Lito here for me?”
As Virgil starts removing the rubble from above the other two trapped people, a middle aged man and a younger woman, it becomes immediately obvious that both of them have more severe wounds than young Lito. They both need medical treatment immediately.
“I’ll carry one of them.” Without the three extra sets of hands he’d need, Virgil has to leave a couple of crowd members applying pressure to their wounds, as he moves back to where John is helping Lito unsteadily to his feet. “Think you can walk, young man? We’re gonna need that stretcher for the big guy.”
“I won’t let you fall.” John promises, and Virgil feels a real swell of pride at how well his brother is handling the situation whilst being outside of both his space station and his comfort zone. It looks like having a rescue and a job to do really gives him no time for anxiety. "I agree that that's our best plan.” He adds, nodding, short and sharp, to confirm it, then John turns, an arm around Lito’s waist and the kid’s arm slung over his shoulder, to address the crowd.
“Anyone not so severely hurt needs to help get the injured out of here.” John instructs, the small crowd listening raptly. The look on the faces of these scared people is one Virgil is all too familiar with, but he knows John has far less experience of in person. They’re really looking to him as their saviour. “Virgil here is going to lead us through the path he just made.” Which is news to Virgil, but does seem like the best plan. “International Rescue will then be able to take us all to the hospital to get checked out, and then I’m sure you’ll be released to go home to your families before you know it. Got it everyone?"
In that moment Virgil finds himself struck with amazement at how John seems to have become almost as fearless as Scott, as they started carrying the two injured people out to safety. It was really a new side to him that Virgil doesn’t think he’s ever seen before.
"Virgil… I need you to check on Lady Penelope and Parker.” John’s keeping pace at his side, helping the boy they’d dug out along as he goes, “I told them to check to see if anyone was hurt."
"Hmm, yeah you're right.” Virgil frowns. If Penny and Parker have any more injured party members, even minor ones that just need a check up, Thunderbird Two will need to evacuate them to the hospital as well. “Have you got any idea where they might be?"
"Well, I told them to get somewhere away from the landslide,” John frowns, as their limping, shocky party stumbles out into the bright light of day, to be greeted by the roar of Thunderbird One’s engines high above them. “They should be near here.” He yells over the sound of it.
As usual, it turns out that John is completely right. Penny and Parker are waiting for them, but neither John nor Virgil find the look on Lady Penelope's face all that reassuring.
"JOHN!” She rushes toward the battered, bloodied spaceman, her arms outstretched. Virgil very quickly and carefully finagles poor Lito out of the way as his brother gets ambushed. “Are you okay?!?” Penelope demands, frantic, “What happened to your arm?” She reaches for the bloodied bandage, and John winces, “I'm so sorry,” All of John’s carefully constructed rules around personal space are shattered as she cups his cheek, inspecting his face for injury. It’s lucky that John is by far the most patient of the Tracy boys. “I shouldn't have left you there.
"She’d been so terrified, perhaps more than anyone else here. The horrific view she’d seen with her own eyes is going to haunt her for a long time yet. One second she was getting out of the building to reassure and check up on the people, and the next she was watching half the structure collapse completely, with John under the side that fell. She still feels a little sick.
"I'm so, so, so sorry John,” She repeats, before he can get a word in edgeways to reassure her, “Please, you must tell me if there's any way I can make it up to you. Ask me anything and I'll do it."
"Okay guys,” Virgil chuckles, “while you talk things out I'll go to get the injured people aboard Thunderbird 2. Make it quick though, we’ve still got people who need immediate medical treatment, got it?"
"F.A.B. Virgil.” John nods, “We'll be quick. Penny, I..."
“I’m so sorry.” She repeats again, and pulls his good arm over her shoulder as if to steady him as they make their way at the back of the crowd toward the big green Thunderbird.
"No no no, Penny, please stop apologising.” John’s fingers tighten for a quick moment on her shoulder, in brief reassurance, “I'm not going to ask you for anything because it was never your fault.” He insists, “It was just some bad luck, that's all. Fortunately I, and most people, got out safe with no severe wounds. These things happen.”
“Your arm.” She points out softly, hoping that all that blood looks worse than it is, “John I can’t believe you stayed behind like that, it’s so...”
“Tracy?” He grins, amused but very weary.
“Scott Tracy.” She corrects, scowling a little as she holds on just that little bit tighter around his waist as his adrenaline from the rescue starts to flag. “I thought you had more common sense.”
“Hate to disappoint.” She feels the warmth of him chuckling, “I’m lucky it was nothing worse than his cut from some shattered glass that fell on my arm while I was helping one of the guys who got stuck. I don’t think any arteries or anything have been damaged, but it is... kinda deep." And he might be getting a little lightheaded from the blood loss. Still, he really wants to reassure her, just like she had reassured him before he’d gone in to give the lecture.
"Hate to interrupt your moment, but are you guys done?" Scott pops up from who-knows-where amongst the crowd to yell at them. He’s clearly joined the relief effort. "Virgil’s just finished getting everyone aboard Thunderbird 2, and he's ready to launch." He adds, squinting at the pale, wobbly mess of his brother. "And you really do need to check your arm. That looks nasty.”
"Yeah Scott,” John wipes a tired hand over his dirty face, dislodging dust, “We're done. Don’t let Thunderbird Two wait for me, I'll hitch a ride with Lady Penelope, uh,” He turns to her, bashful, to check, “If that’s okay?"
“Of course,” Her Ladyship concedes, “Scott?” She is mildly concerned that big brother might want to have the injured member of his flock under his wing so he can smother him.
"Yeah sure, ride whatever you want.” Scott flip flops a dismissive hand at them, “You can ride a pod, I won't care as long as your destination is the hospital."
"How about you, Gordon?” John knows his little brother is still on the line, probably sulking. “Is it okay if I take the ride with Lady P?"
"W-what do you mean by that?” Gordon sounds confused and maybe a little embarrassed, like he’s been caught out. “Scott already said you should go, why’re you asking me?"
"Well, she's your girlfriend.” John grins, teasing, as Penny helps him into the back of FAB1. “Of course I have to get permission from her boyfriend.
"Penny swats at him for that, amused, but careful not to hit his injured arm. She doesn’t need anyone’s permission to do anything, but it is fun to see Gordon squirm - especially as Scott and Virgil both crack up, and even Alan in space starts teasing him.
"What?!?” Gordon’s face, bless that darling young man, has gone bright red. “J-Just go already." He ducks off the comm screen to try and hide his embarrassment, but it’s far too late for that.
He’s lucky that Penelope finds it incredibly endearing.
"John,” She nudges him, as the Tracy’s all click off the line to go do their actual jobs. She’s a little concerned that he’s looking a bit spaced out, if you’ll excuse the pun, and it’s probably a good idea to keep him talking. “You know we're still going to The Pagasa Observatory, just like I promised you, right?"
"Wait really?” John’s head tilts, a little floppy, towards her from where it had been sinking into FAB1’s luxurious headrests. He’s looking a little grey, but it’s good to see his eyes open. “After all that happened?” A ginger eyebrow quirks, “Are you sure there's time for that?"
"Well, we’re on our way to the hospital now, but there’ll be plenty of time this afternoon.” As long as the medics give him a clean bill of health. “You can change your clothes after we're done checking your arm then there should be time for you to go see that big telescope you've been dreaming of visiting. After all, I did promise you we’d go there after we're done."
"Well, that sounds good to me!” John smiles like there’s a supanova fuling him, “Penny you’re the best."
They reach the hospital a little after International Rescue has dropped off the fourty or so injured people, and so there’s quite a wait for a Doctor to be free so that they can have a look at John’s poor, sliced arm. Penny seems to be doing a worried hover at his side, while he waits, shaky from blood loss, and though he’s not used to having so much company, John has to admit it’s nice to have a chance to catch up with his old friend with no rescue alarms blaring.
Alan reports in that the two worst injured in the landslide have been hospitalized as fast as possible, that they were stable - the doctors have said their prognosis looked good. He also tells him that Lito’s family had been asking after the redheaded lecturer who’d helped him out of the rubble, and that John Tracy, M.Sci, PgDip, B.Lang Hons, should probably expect a gift basket in the mail quite soon.
John gets quite flustered about that. He’d just been doing his job.
The spaceman's arm was eventually treated, and Scott calls in to ask what actually happened to his arm. It still hurts, a properly bandaged throb just under his elbow, but not like before. The painkilling injection and little bit of morphine they’d given him when they stitched it up had probably helped with that.
Alan’s reports dug up that the landslide had been caused by a water main leaking under the building, and destabilizing the soil. Over time, water can do a lot of damage, washing away vital infrastructure if it’s not been properly reinforced during construction.
As the Chino Roque Theater was a new build, there must have been a mistake in the installation of the pipes during construction.
Someone was getting a big lawsuit heading their way, and Tracy Enterprises will be more than happy to fund the lawyers for the theatre.
As Lady Penelope promised him, they found John a change of clothes and went to the Pagasa Observatory. Penny’s quite sure she’s never seen anything as wholesome as the moment John sees the telescope - his eyes went all shiny, and the smile on his face was massive.
"Lady Penelope, Parker come take a look at the stars!!!” He calls, over his shoulder, with the enthusiasm of a boy half his age, “They’re really beautiful from here!" With such a high-powered lens pointed up at the cosmos, it rivals even his view from Thunderbird Five.
"Indeed, they are." Lady Penelope and Parker both step up to take turns, but John was the one to look through the telescope the most. With all the stealth her years as a secret agent offered her, Lady Penelope took a picture of him.
"Parker, come take a look." She whispers, beckoning her old companion gleefully over. "He looks so happy and innocent in this picture. Wouldn’t it be lovely to see his face like this always?"
"We still have some time before they close,” Parker points out, a sly grin creeping onto his nosey old face. “How h’bout we leave him like this for a little longer?"
"That, Parker.” she smiles, “Is an excellent idea.”

I finished Heartstopper! Ok, so, instead of just talking about how I can't believe I finished it and omg what am I gonna do now, which is really how I'm still feeling, I decided to make this a little post about my history with the show? Ok, so, I've known about the show for a while now, like when back when it was first announced it was happening, just from seeing people talk about it happening on my twitter tl or so. I guess I did kinda think about reading the comic, but not really since I'm not used to webtoons. So I just waited for the show to come out, and I was looking forward to it and all, but I was also a bit scared I wouldn't really like it. I knew the comics had this "reputation" of being like... The most cute wholesome unproblematic thing in the world, and that's not necessarily the thing I gravitate the most towards, or that I feel really represent me that much? But, you know, since I'm writing this, obviously I was wrong. I loved the show. So much. I definetely see what people see about it. Charlie is one of the most relatable characters ever, and tbh that probably just makes me the most basic twink I always knew I were, but... I was rooting for him the moment he showed up, and the more we got of him the more I had to relate. Pretty much all the good and the bad, I could see myself on it. I know lots of people find him and other characters relatable, but, honestly, it's something else to be watching this as a gay guy. I was gonna say mlm but even that is different. I can see how a bi guy would feel differently, and probably resonate even more to Nick's arc. Or even a bi girl, though that would be a bit different it being a mlm story, etc, etc. I don't mean to say I'm more of a fan than anyone, because like, surely not, but yk. There's something special about watching a show where the main character is literally the same thing as you as far as what that would mean in terms of representation. And the ship, do I even need to say anything about it? I mean, just... Yeah. Watching their bond grow over the course over the story was so amazing. Watching Nick grow into himself. I look at like, reactions of the earliest episodes and we got SO FAR already on just 8 episodes. I have, maybe like, a issue or two. But it was just great. I'm so glad it exists and that I was even more excited about it than I imagined.

bittersweet
Also since you might get the weird notif that I'm posting again😂 might as well tell you guys what I've been up to.
So I'm in uni now, which is weird as heck because I think I started this blog when I was like 15... And now I'm turning 20 in like 21 days... (I'm old I know ;-;)
I always promised to post, to finish that and that series which I never did in the end. I'm sorry for those who were anticipating it... so was I!
This blog was my outlet, my safe place. I came here to connect and post some light hearted stories about a band I used to adore. Don't get me wrong I still love Bangtan. I'm so proud of them, how far they've come and evolved. They helped me through the thoughest times of my life. I was so miserable back then. I'd just lost my grandpa, some friends too and I fell into a dark loop. Their music helped me distract myself from that. Their little funny videos, the bangtan bombs, the vlives helped me not think about my demons for a little bit. Just being an ARMY, staying up late waiting for a song to drop, ordering the albums and getting excited about which photocard will I get, collecting merch and hoping to see them live one day. It was enough for me to get through the darkest moments of my life. I detest and adore that time. I hate it because of how much I hated myself and my life and how I wanted to end it all for good. And I love it how I was able to meet Bangtan and you guys too! Some of you were just passer-bys. Some of you quiet readers, some of you were the cutest anons I’ve met.
And now here I am. I feel like my life is completely different now. Sadly I’m not as much of a hardcore kpop fan like I was in my teens. I still like Bangtan and their music. I felt bad that I’m not a true ARMY now but that’s some bs 😂. I remembered something Jungkook said once “some of you may have already moved on, but I want to thank you all no matter when you loved us. I just want to thank you for sharing all those moments with us. I’ll always be here. ARMY can come anytime they want to and can also leave us whenever they want to or have to. But please remember this: I’m always here.” When I saw this tipical me started crying at how beautiful this is. They have shown me so many beautiful things in life. A way to view life I thought was impossible. And I’m so thankful for that. So dear BTS, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Without them this blog wouldn’t exist either. I was hesitant to open it, and post here, but I’m glad I did. I’ve had so much fun writing these stories for you guys. The process made me realise how much I love writing. I loved talking to you guys so much too. I didn’t have a lot of anons but it doesn’t matter. They were one of the sweetest people, and I wish they are all good and happy. I wish all of you who were with me once are happy and everything is well for you. I wish you guys nothing but the best. I want you to know how much you’ve helped me and made me happy. And I want you to know how much I love you guys too.
If from this emotional start you didn’t guess what I want to say... I will close down the blog. I don’t plan on posting more even though I have so much drafts I planned on doing. I know to some of you this was kind of obvious since I haven’t posted in so long. But to me it still wasn’t a closed chapter.
Though I will not delete it. I want new ARMYs to experience the fandom to the fullest. (I know my stories are not the best but I was a baby let me off the hook 😂) But I will not post anymore.... stories. I can’t never leave something 😂 But my blog and messages are still open for you guys if you need someone to talk to, just vent or pass some time. I know we are living through some difficult times now.
Just to close this post somehow to make it cringey (like all my posts😂) here is one of the earliest pictures of me on here and I took the other one just recently. You can decide where I look (almost) 20 and where I'm 16😂
Love- Menta aka Mintae💗
#minttexs#byebye#if you need help or someone to talk to#im here#if someone ever reads this post#or you wondered what happened to that old fanfic writer

PLAYING: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
It's a little too Ocarina of Time, but also no enough. Yet despite that stupid sword $&*%, I'm having fun.
So I played three games back to back. They were short and sweet (just as I like'em). I was going to move on to the next but then my wife started Ocarina of Time on Switch. We brought the kids' cots out to the living room and they were all snuggled up with their stuffed animals and snacks having a great time watching us play. So we powered our way through the game (it's been years since we played all the way through and I was going to finish it this time!).
Feeling excited about Zelda, we decided to through in Skyward Sword. We've never played before, and we bought it months ago (can't remember why...I think we had store credit?) but never started it. So...we started it.
It's become a nice post-dinner event for us. The kids get on their cots with some snacks (the key to being southern american is to always have snacks immediately have dinner/supper). My wife and I have a glass of rum-n-juice each, and enjoy the adventure.
Not sure why I shared all that except for maybe that's my favorite part of this experience??
SO we've made it pretty far. We tracked Zelda to all the main temples until she disappeared into the time gate, leaving us the harp of time. Now we've just collected all the tools and the three flames to create the master sword. So I guess we're at the final stretch, and I'm just now journaling. (I've been busy...)
Not sure how to break this down--but I think Imma start with why this is both too much like Ocarina and not enough...
Ocarina of Time Defined 3D Action Adventure Games
I love 3D action adventure games, this includes platformers like Mario, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper. I love the exploring interesting environments, discovering secrets, and experiencing the stories. And I feel all 3D action adventures basically take their cues from Ocarina of Time.
Sure, games like Tomb Raider and Soul Reaver were being produced at the same time, but I think they were likely inspired by older Zeldas. Whatever, no need to track the design DNA down to the original Adam & Eve of video games--the point is, most of what has become adventure game staples got their start in Ocarina of Time.
Regardless of its influence, OOT had little to draw influence from. I mean, it borrows heavily from the 3D concepts Mario 64 explored, but OOT was trying to build a cohesive world and story while Mario was just having fun. So it's that imaginative approach to world building and story telling that I think makes OOT the grandmother of 3D adventure games.
Because OOT was having to figure things out on the fly, I can forgive its shortcomings. BUT because Skyward Sword is decades later in the franchise, I struggle to let it get away with much.
Such as...
An Interconnected World
I asked my Game Development professor if Ocarina of Time should be considered open world. He responded in that annoying way that deep thinkers do: "I think it's more about a feeling of open world."
Find dude, how do you feel about it?
Never mind! He was a good teacher. Point is, I view it as an open world. As much was really possible for it. Every dungeon, area, and building in the game is basically connected. Even if they're loaded independently, they're still connected. And once you open an area, it generally remains accessible to you for the rest of the game--dungeons included. This is part of why OOT is so great.
Firstly, it makes the world feel more real. Even despite how horribly shaped the landscapes or crassly gamey paths are designed, because it was all interconnected, it felt like a real space that fit together.
Secondly, this made the game feel like a discovery. From the earliest Zeldas, there wasn't a lot of handholding. You were often just dropped into an environment and told good luck. When I first played through Ocarina of Time, I felt like I stumbled upon about 90% of the game accidentally. Much in the same way that Morrowind felt like a completely open experience, OOT did too. I know now there's a very linear progression through OoT, but unlike something like God of War, they don't force your hand. They let you explore the wrong paths a little.
NOW back to SkSw (Skyward Sword). Just like OoT, much of the game is separated into levels/areas. But there's two distinct zones: they sky and the surface. They're separated by a cloud covering your bird refuses to pass through, and you can only access places once a hole in the clouds separates. From there, you can drop down into 1 of 3 distinct surface areas...and they're not interconnected.
This make the game feel disjointed. Sure, I have the freedom to backtrack. And each zone has pretty large with different things to explore. But I don't get the same feeling of a unified world as I did in OoT.
Let's Talk About the Sky
I don't know why I said "let's", it's just me talking.
I didn't know much about Skyward Sword before playing, just that it's the chronological beginning. I knew there were floating islands and I assumed there were bird people (that I met in Breath of the Wild). My thought was that the game would fully take place in the sky with islands and the climax would see the islands descending to the surface to create the world we've all come to love and fear.
But nope. There's a few floating islands and a never ending storm. But most the game is on the surface.
This made me sad. It was really cool that you could fly a bird to all these islands, so getting to fly that bird to major game zones would have been awesome! It also would have made the bird-flying way more significant. Instead, the bird becomes an unexciting chore. The sky has little going for it. Skyloft the town is pretty well developed with some fun secrets and interesting characters. But the rest of the sky is mostly empty space that takes waaay too long to fly around. And sadly, as far as I can tell, there's no warp feature like with the songs in Ocarina of Time. So I have to fly every where...it sucks.
See what I'm saying
I've gone on about nothing enough. Let's shut this down for now. The point I'm making is that the world is disconnected by load screens like OoT. Given this game is post the open world boom, not being more open is a bit of a crime. Wasn't Windwaker open world? So not having the whole game be in the sky, I think, was a missed opportunity and makes the game feel too old fashioned (too much like Ocarina of Time). But because the game is so disconnected and you're told exactly where to go 95% of the time, and most areas are inaccessible until the story wants you to go there, you don't get any of the discovery and sense of exploration of OoT. (Not enough like Ocarina of Time).
Because of this, the game doesn't feel like the kind of groundbreaking experience Zelda should be. But it also came out while Nintendo was struggling to keep up with the competition. So they often took "short cuts". I mean, the animation of Link climbing, especially when you press B is horrifyingly bad. It's like a non-artist put in a place holder animation and the bosses said, "Good enough, ship it."

OH BOY I just typed up a whole thing about ordering doll hair recently, so here’s my input! (Most of my advice is aimed towards folks looking for pony matches, color and texture wise, so feel free to disregard that!)
I’m strictly a pony rehairer so far, so I don’t know how much hair you would need to rehair a doll head. Sorry!! However, TheDollPlanet is very responsive to messages, so I bet if you asked her she would have a good answer for you!
-
The Dollyhair situation; the site has a long and storied history of bad feedback, ranging from 'poor shipping time' to 'never shipped at all/required a chargeback' to 'harassment', so while I will say that I never had anything but very positive interactions, I no longer feel comfortable recommending that site to anyone. Which is a shame, because I loved that hair for many years! Within the past year or so, many new hair shops have sprung into being, and some old shops have opened and closed! I'll list them in no particular order - I think they're all fab, and I've ordered from all of the folks I list next! One of the new shops include Shimmerlocks (shimmerlocks.com ) which has super-fast shipping, and great contact if you have questions or concerns on the colors! She's very active and responsive on Facebook and Instagram! She also offers tinsel, which is a novelty among hair suppliers, and although her color range isn't very wide yet, she's still very new, and so more hair colors will be coming I'm sure. She also offers fun packs, like 'G1 first year rainbow' packs, and offers color matches for many popular ponies! (Just plug in the pony’s name on the searchbar on her page!) I will say that, she’s great about contact and shipping times, but some of her matches are not EXACT matches, which I think will be remedied as her shop grows and she’s able to get more hair variety. Another lovely shop (new to me!) is TheDollyVerse (https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheDollyverse ) which has a lot of lovely nylon colors much like you'd get from Dollyhair or Shimmerlocks, with fast shipping, and lovely to chat to! When I ordered a color, she told me she'd found out suddenly that it had the tendency to stain, so she refunded me and still sent me the hanks anyway to see if I could fix the staining issue! She doesn't have any pony matches listed, but her hair is lovely and soft, and I'm excited to work with it! There's also TheDollPlanet (https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheDollPlanetHair ) which is an awesome shop, also very responsive to messages and the like, and offers lots of great hair types you can't get anywhere else, like fluffy, microbraids, S-curl, GITD and ringlets! However, a lot of her hair is known as 'high temperature nylon', aka it won't take a cold curl, and it is very stiff. If you want pony-identical nylon, you will probably need to find another store. She also sells lots of cool items, like a model stand, rehairing tools, and a craft saw!! A cool returnee is CustomPony.com (now located at https://custompony.ecrater.com/ ), she was active during the earliest days I remember in the fandom, and she's recently returned! She sold off her old stock, and now she's listing new stuff! She ships fast, lovely to chat with, and her hair is also the same kind of nylon you'd find in MLPs. I haven't worked with the hair I bought from her yet, but I have heard some folks mentioning it's a little stiffer, and has more of a 'matte' finish than the average MLP does. I'll have to confirm that for myself once I start rehairing with it! (Note: I have since worked with it, and there’s definitely some sort of ‘finisher’ on the hair, which left my fingers tacky. Great for making knots, bad for lying flat. I’m going to wash the hair and see if I can get it out, and if the texture will still be good once it’s cleaned.)
There's also another 'oldie' still going strong; they're more of a doll hair supplier, so I don't see them mentioned on pony sites a lot. I haven't bought from them, but they might be worth exploring! https://www.restoredoll.com/ I haven't heard anything bad, and I generally hear 'yeah, they're good!' from folks when they're mentioned. They seem to be a big supplier of Saran, if I'm not mistaken? Which is more commonly used on dolls, not ponies, so understandable why I haven’t seen them mentioned a lot.
Since you're in North America I wouldn't recommend DHEmporium (formerly RetroDollsUK) only because shipping can be pretty pricey abroad! But it was worth paying the $20 shipping fee to get some of the awesome GITD colors she carries! She has the widest variety of colors in GITD AFAIK, as well as the typical lovely nylon shades! Here's her site! https://www.thedollhairemporium.co.uk/ There's also a lovely Australian hair supplier, CustomDollHairAU (https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/CustomDollHairAu ) who I haven't ordered from, but I've heard glowing reviews from my Aussie friends, and she is very active on Instagram! A shop that I'm sad to say I can't recommend is Dolltress.com, because while I had one excellent purchase with them (fast shipping etc.), after I recommended them to a user on the MLPArena, she had to file a chargeback after the seller dropped all contact. :/ The seller may be going through a move right now, but that's when you close the shop temporarily, not just stop returning emails. (I had a friend also tell me, they ordered tinsel from both DollTress.com and Shimmerlocks, and DollTress charged more money for smaller packages of tinsel! :/ No bueno!) The same warning sadly goes for RetroDollsUS, they're having a lot of shipping delays recently (the shop is closed on their Etsy), with a flood of bad feedback to boot. I also unfortunately heard about some negative feedback they received in the past (more on the dolly side of things - slow shipping/didn't ship until the buyer complained, swap issues, etc.), so I wouldn't feel comfortable shopping from or recommending them either.
Most of these shops are located in the US (if they’re not I’ve been sure to add a location), so I would hope that they wouldn’t have a lot of problems shipping to you in Canada! Shimmerlocks is fast becoming the newest replacement for Dollyhair, at least based on what I’ve seen in the pony community, but they are by no means the only hair supplier out there! I’m still looking for that true bright red that DH used to carry, Cherry Pie, so if anyone finds that color, hit me up!
I have 2 questions. 1-What size should I order from Doll Planet to rehair a Star Darling doll? (the heads are a similar size to Monster High), Doll Planet sells by oz and I'm not sure how much I'd need to cover one. Is there a proper alternative to Dolly Hair? I've heard there are some problems with it, but some of my projects involve restoring Ponies, so I want to use the correct colours, but the only other store I know has the exact colours is in the UK, and I'm in Canada, so I was hoping for somewhere closer. Thank you in advance.
Hi! I'm going to publish this because I am actually the last perso are the people I can think of offhand who have more experience with doll hair ordering than I dol hair new so I can't remember all of the better places off hand. I know Shimmerlocks has a lot of positive feedback, and I'm pretty sure they ship to Canada with no issues.
@firespirited @dollsonmain @dolldirt @dollsorwhatever @ponyguru are the people I can think of offhand who have more expereince with doll hair ordering than I do
