Matching Costumes ~ Matt Sturniolo
Summary: You get invited to an iconic Tara Yummy party for Halloween, not expecting Matt's costume to be matching with yours.
Warnings: Possible swearing, nicknames, shipping, secret feelings, fluff
You were all dressed up in your costume for the party. Tara was throwing a massive Halloween party. You had chosen to go as Harley Quinn, after having a love for the DC character. You were now waiting for your ride, which happened to be Nick, Matt and Chris.
You had no idea what the triplets were dressing as and vice versa. You wanted it to be a surprise amongst your small friendship group.
A few minutes later, you saw a car pull up in your driveway. You grabbed your bag and walked out to see the familiar car. You climbed in the back besides Nick, who screamed upon seeing your costume.
"Fuck, Nick, have you got to scream!" Chris shouted.
"Sorry! But look!" Nick replied.
Chris and Matt both turned to look at you and that's when you realised what he was screaming about.
Matt was dressed as the Joker.
"Was this planned!" Nick shouted.
"Yeah dude, did you both like, keep this a secret from us?" Chris asked.
"Nope." Matt said shortly.
"No, totally unplanned." You replied.
"That's so cute actually." Nick then said.
You smiled as Matt faced forward again and started driving, Luckily you didn't see the blush on his cheeks.
The car was full of laughter and loud chatter as Matt drove to the party, trying to keep his secret feelings at bay.
As the four of you arrived and headed inside, you were instantly greeted by Tara. She noticed your costumes and smiled wide.
"Aw! You guys look so cute!" She shouted over the loud music.
"It wasn't planned!" You responded.
"Still cute! You know, you two would make a cute couple!" She commented.
You fell silent, alongside the trio. Nick and Chris both looked at Matt, who's eyes were wide at the host's comment.
"Hey Tara, I think you need a re-fill!" Matt said, nodding over to the bar.
"Hm, okay!" She replied with a laugh.
You sighed as the party was in full swing. You and the guys stuck to sodas for the night, Chris had eaten a load of pizza and some girls wouldn't leave Nick alone, which you found ironic.
However, many of your friends had come over and commented on yours and Matt's costumes, and since you hadn't really left his side all night, it made it even more obvious.
And the more comments that came, the more you noticed Matt getting irritated. After the last one from a random guest, Matt stormed out, leaving you, Nick and Chris.
"Go." Nick said to you.
"What?" You called.
"Go. Go after him." He said.
You sighed and followed Matt out of the house, seeing him leaning against the car. You walked over and placed a hand on his arm.
"Hey, you okay?" You asked softly.
"Yeah, I'm fine." He mumbled.
"We can leave if you want." You offered.
"No, it's fine." He said.
"You can tell me what's wrong." You reassured him.
Matt sighed and turned to face you. He gave you a small smile.
"It's just..." He began to say.
"You can tell me anything, Matt." You replied.
"I like you. I have for a while." He confessed.
"You....You do?" You asked in shock.
"Yeah. I get it if you don't like me bac-"
You cut Matt off with a gentle kiss. His hands settled on your waist as yours sat on his shoulders. You pulled away and smiled at him.
"Wow." He mumbled.
"I know." You replied.
"So that means..." He mumbled, making you giggle.
"Yes I like you back." You said.
Matt smiled as he pulled you into a hug, kissing your forehead, making you smile.
"Wanna head back inside and show everyone our matching couple costumes?" You suggested.
"Of course, sweetheart, then I can show everyone your my girl now." He replied.
You smiled as you both walked back inside, your hands connected and once Nick and Chris saw you, the eldest screamed once again.
"Fuck yeah! Finally!" He exclaimed.
"Shut up." Matt mumbled, wrapping an arm around your shoulder.

A Shot at Love: Your Journey Ends Here
This week on ‘A Shot at Love’, the boys face new challenges from our bachelorette. Their bodies put to the test during exciting dates that leave one man packing his bags early.
As connections grow stronger, the decisions only get harder.
Who will stay, and who will have to leave the mansion? Find out tonight on ‘A Shot at Love!’
Remember to cast your vote for who should earn a rose, voting is only open for 24 hours!
4.8k words
The men gathered outside, yet another rose ceremony about to begin. Biz and Whit offering Pink Whitney shots to calm the nerves, you truly didn’t understand how they hadn’t gone through their entire supply yet.
“Gentleman, tonight two of you will unfortunately be leaving the mansion and your time here will come to an end.”
Taking your place at the front of the group you smiled at the group, then sending smiles to Auston and Luke who had already received their roses from their dates earlier in the night.
“I know I say this every week, but this is only going to get harder. And I’m having to make some really difficult decisions, having to say goodbye to some amazing guys. So please, just know this is never easy on me to stand up here. And I appreciate all of you being part of this journey.”
Taking a deep breath you picked up the first rose, ready to make your decisions.
“Matt Rempe…Quinn…Nico…John…Jamie.”
Three men stood in front of you, but only one rose remained. As you looked from Trevor, to Cole, to Mat Barzal, you knew there was only one choice for you.
“Mat, will you accept this rose?”
He let out a sigh of relief before walking towards you, a smile on his face as he stood proud knowing he’d gotten the chance to stay another week.
“I will always say yes to a rose from you.”
With a hug he was off to join the others, Cole and Trevor both smiling to one another as they waited to say their goodbyes.
“I’m so sorry, I wish you two nothing but the best.”
Giving them each a hug you could sense they weren’t too devastated, mentioning that if they were going to go out, at least they did it together. The guys chirped at the two boys as they headed to gather their things, saying they’d secretly gotten what they wanted leaving together. But you didn’t pay much attention, knowing that you were happy with your decision.
Per usual, the group ended the night with a toast, followed by a Pink Whitney shot. The guys heading inside while Biz and Whit stuck around to pick your brain.
“So, how are things going? Anyone in particular standing out to you right now?”
You walked with them along the cobblestone path leading to their staircase. “I mean, yes and no. I feel like I have so many connections forming, and they are all so different. But, there are a few guys in jeopardy if I don’t start feeling some sort of spark from them.”
“Oh shit, who would that be?”
“Come on boys, a woman never kisses and tells.”
Bidding them farewell you headed up the stairs, knowing you’d need the rest for the jam packed day of dates that would await you tomorrow.
-
“Date card boys!”
Auston shouted to the group as he entered from the hall, holding the pink date card envelope proudly in the air. Taking a peek himself before reading it aloud.
“Jamie, Mat Barzal…will you catch me if I fall?”
The group looked to one another a bit shocked to hear that it would be a double date. Jamie and Mat gave each other a fist bump as they headed off to get ready. The rest of the group curious as to how the dates would play out now that a double date was awarded.
“So, six of us left, you think she is going to do one group date for the rest of us?”
Auston questioned as he took a seat next to Matt Rempe, the guys shrugging as they picked each other's brains.
“There’s got to be at least one solo date right? Then five guys for the group date?”
Nico gave his two cents as the guys continued to hypothesize as to what your plans were, though they’d not know what you had planned until the date cards arrived.
-
“Hey boys!”
You waved to Jamie and Mat as they headed your way, glancing around trying to figure out where they were and why. Taking in the beautiful scenery surrounding the historic Bridge to Nowhere.
Both men gave you a hug as they waited for an explanation of what this date would entail.
“So, today we are going to be testing your ability to talk me off the ledge, or rather over it. Today we are bungee jumping off of the historic Bridge to Nowhere.”
Both men gave you a shocked look as they laughed, clearly not expecting this to be the activity they were participating in when they woke up this morning. Although Mat clearly would take anything over the food date you’d put him through the night before.
“Holy shit, um okay.”
“Nervous Jamie?”
He looked at you laughing, the look on his face telling you that he was nervous, though he tried to put on a brave face. Mat on the other hand kept his cocky demeanor as he didn’t even bat an eye at the plan.
“I’ll be good, don’t worry about me.”
Jamie reassured you that he was okay, though as you took his hand you could feel how shaky they were. Mat’s grip on your other hand was strong as he was smiling from ear to ear, his adrenaline already pumping as he was eager to get the jumping started.
“So, I wanted to bring you both on this date because I felt as though I haven’t gotten much time with each of you. I wanted to put you to the test and see how well you would do at calming my nerves and helping me be able to bungee jump today.”
The men smiled as each of you were getting hooked up with your harnesses, the workers explaining how the jumping process would work. The further along they got into the process the more nervous you’d become. Your hands shaky as they guided you all to the jumping platform.
“So, who is going first?”
The worker looked at the three of you, your hands sweaty as you could feel your heart racing. Biting your lip as you took a step back, feeling yourself getting too scared to go closer to the edge.
“I don’t know if I can do it, I’m getting so nervous.”
“Then I’ll go first.”
Jamie bravely stepped forward, squeezing your hand reassuringly.
“I can see you are getting scared about going, so I’ll go first. I’ll show you that there’s nothing to worry about. It’s perfectly safe, okay?”
You appreciated how Jamie had taken notice of your nerves, wanting to help however he could to ease them and make you feel more comfortable with jumping.
He moved into position as the workers got everything in place, giving him a countdown before he’d jumped from the ledge. You and Mat move to look over the side of the bridge, watching as Jamie’s playful shouts echoed below.
“Don’t fall!”
Mat grabbed your shoulders, quickly jolting you forward and back and you gasped, a slight scream coming from your lips as you clutched your chest. Taking a step back from the cliff you shot Mat a glare.
“What the hell is your problem?”
Mat scoffed as you questioned him, a slight laugh escaping his lips as he took a step towards you. Instinctively you took a step back, making sure to move away from the edge as now you didn’t trust Mat and his joking antics.
“Oh come on, it’s called a joke. You weren’t gonna fall.”
He reached out to try and give you a hug to get you to relax but you pushed him away.
“Okay now you’re the one with the problem! Can’t take a joke? God, sorry for trying to get you to loosen up.”
“Loosen up? You just jokingly acted like you were going to push me over the edge after seeing how scared I was.”
Jamie had come back up to join you and Mat, catching the end of you yelling at him. He quickly rushed to your side, trying to decipher what you two were upset about and calm you down.
“Hey, what’s going on?”
“I’m done, I'm not jumping anymore. He ruined this whole date with his jokes’. I’m done.”
Jamie looked from Mat to you, confused on what he’d missed. Mat telling him that you were overreacting to a simple joke, Jamie not buying it by your reaction.
He quickly ran to catch up to you, taking your hands in his as he stopped in front of you.
“Hey, what’s wrong? What happened?”
His thumb brushed over your cheek to wipe a few tears that had fallen, a look of concern in his eyes as you took a deep breath trying to collect yourself.
“Mat thought he was being funny by pretending to shove me towards the edge. He said I couldn’t take a joke, but you both saw how scared I was to even come here. The whole point was to see if you guys could calm my nerves and help me feel comfortable making the jump. And now I don’t even want to do this anymore.”
Jamie wrapped you in a hug as he tried to find the words to say, shocked that Mat would have thought the joke was funny after seeing how nervous you were. Clearly not understanding the point behind the date.
“Hey, it’s okay. Look at me.”
Jamie took your face in his hands as he smiled, “It’s gonna be okay. If you don’t wanna jump, then we can leave now and go back to the house. But, I don’t want you to regret not facing your fears today. I wanna see you make this jump, and I will be right there by your side to keep you calm until you decide to jump. You can do this, I did it and look at me. Still standing here pretty in front of you!”
You chuckled at Jamie’s words as he wrapped you in a hug. He’d helped ease your nerves and made you feel comfortable going forward with jumping after all. Taking his hand in yours, the two of you headed back towards the bridge. The instructors getting you hooked back up and ready to go.
“Okay, y/n, you got this. Just breathe, and know that I’m gonna be right here cheering you on. And afterwards you’ll come back up and I’ll be here, ready to hear how amazing it was. Okay?”
Nodding your head you gave Jamie a smile before getting in position, the instructors giving you some last minute reminders before they counted you down. The second you left the platform you felt your stomach sink to your feet, your eyes looking around to take in the view of the jump. A smile on your face as you screamed out of excitement, so happy that Jamie had calmed you down and convinced you to make the jump despite Mat’s joking.
As you’d finally come down, the workers getting you out of your harness and guiding you back up to the top of the bridge, you saw Jamie waiting for you with the biggest smile on his face.
“I told you that you could do it! I’m so proud of you!”
He wrapped you in a hug, spinning you around as he kissed your cheek. Smiling from ear to ear, you thanked him for helping you even get to that point. For believing in you and helping keep you calm enough to go through with it.
“If you want to go ahead, I’m gonna talk to Mat really quick.”
“Okay, sure. I’ll see you in a minute.”
Jamie headed off where they’d set up some lunch for you all in the nearby pavilion, giving you space to talk with Mat.
“You see, I told you that you could do it.”
His tone was a bit cocky as he smirked at you, clearly not realizing that he was in the wrong for his jokes.
“Mat, look. I understand if that joking was your personality, or you thought it would be helpful. But I was nervous, scared even. And believe it or not, pretending to push someone over the edge isn’t necessarily helpful.”
He nodded his head as he was yet to say anything further, letting you speak your mind as you knew in your heart what you needed to do.
“I’m sorry but, I just don’t think that there is really a connection forming here. This date was to test whether or not you’d be able to be there for me when I needed you. And unfortunately, you opted to tease me and joke around in a time that didn’t call for it. So for that, I am going to ask you to leave the competition, your shot at love has come to an end.”
Despite the little to no reaction, you knew that it was definitely a shot to his ego. Biting his cheek as he shook his head, giving you a half hearted hug before he said goodbye. Though it hurt to eliminate someone outside of a rose ceremony, you knew in your heart things weren’t moving in the right direction, and if you were going to find love you needed to be sure the men that stayed in the house were the right ones.
Turning on your heels, you jogged off towards the pavilion so as to not keep Jamie waiting. Excited for the opportunity at some more time with him after he’d pleasantly surprised you during your slight freak out earlier.
-
The boys were gathered in the living room as they awaited the next date card, Jamie soon returning from his date. A bit of shock on the faces of the group as they saw just one guy returning from the double date.
“Where’s Barzy?”
Jamie sighed as he took a seat on the couch, running a hand through his hair with a halfhearted smile.
“She sent him home. There was a little argument on the date. But in the end she made the decision that there wasn’t much of a connection and she doesn’t want to waste anyone’s time if she doesn’t feel that spark this far along.”
The guys sat in silence, shocked to know you’d made such a decision, though they all respected your desire to only keep the guys you had true connections with.
“Well, to lighten the mood gentleman, how about a date card?”
Whit appeared from the hall with the pink envelope, Nico offering to read it aloud to the boys.
“Oo, solo date boys.”
Nico smirked before continuing with the message, getting the group nervous as they wondered who would get the invitation.
“Matt Rempe, hope you’ve been practicing your poses.”
The reaction was a mixed as the group applauded Matt, happy that he’d gotten the opportunity for some one on one time as he’d been one of the quieter guys in the house.
-
“Oh good morning sunshine!”
You waved to Matt with a smile as he slowly made his way towards you. Dressed in shorts and a t-shirt as you’d told him to dress comfortably, you couldn’t help but question how this man was so tall. Even after seeing him for several weeks now, you weren’t sure you’d ever get used to it.
“How are you? Good to see you.”
His voice was a bit raspy as he’d surely just woken up, the call time for your date being right around sunrise. His arms wrapped around you in a hug before he awaited the reveal of today’s date.
“So, I’m sure the date card left you a little confused. Especially now with me waking you up so early. But, I figured with the stress of this whole process we could treat ourselves to some yoga on the beach!”
Matt chuckled as he ran a hand through his hair, the idea of him doing any yoga poses immediately making him nervous.
“You do know I’m a giant right? Are you sure this date card wasn’t meant for someone else?”
You laughed as you took his hand in yours, leading the way towards the beach. “Definitely not, this date is all yours Matt Rempe!”
The two of you made the trek out onto the beach, yoga mats already laid out with your instructor patiently waiting for you. Matt flashed you a smirk, shaking his head as he took a seat. Following suit you took your place, the instructor starting you two off with some breathing exercises.
Before you knew Matt was more relaxed, not feeling uncomfortable about the situation as he was surprising you with his eagerness to attempt the yoga positions that were being thrown at you.
“Okay, seems like you two have nailed the individual poses, how about we try some couples poses?”
Matt looked at you with a grin, “I’m down if you are.” Taking his hand he pulled you over to his yoga mat, the instructor guiding you two into a partner tree pose.
“Oh god, I’m apologizing now if I smell. It’s so hot out here I’m sweating like crazy.”
You laughed as Matt blushed, trying his best to not get his sweaty frame anywhere near your face. The sun beating down on the two of you had you both dripping sweat. The pose itself looking awkward considering he was so much taller than you.
“Yeah I didn’t consider this might turn into hot yoga out here in the sun.”
You squinted your eyes looking up at him, a slight chuckle coming from him as he turned his attention back to the instructor. Finally leading you two into one last pose to finish off the session.
Double downward dog was proving to be the most challenging for the two of you as you weren’t able to place your feet onto Matt’s lower back. Again mostly because he was a giant compared to you, but still you tried. The instructor offered as much help as they could, while Matt thoroughly enjoyed your struggle. His laugh caused his body to shake and only make your portion of the pose that much harder to achieve.
“Matt Rempe, knock it off!”
You scolded him playfully as he continued to laugh, eventually noticing that you wouldn’t be able to get into position, opting to roll his hips side to side, causing you to fall off his back and plop down into the sand.
“You did not just do that.”
He rolled onto his side, resting his head on his hand as he laughed at you.
“What are you doing laying in the sand silly goose?”
Shooting him a playful glare you threw a small handful of sand at him, then standing up to clean up your portion of the beach that you’d reserved for your yoga session. Matt helped with his yoga mat as the two of you headed to a spot nearby. Set up with umbrellas for some shade, and a cooler with drinks, you two sat down in the chairs provided and immediately chugged some water.
“Well that was fun! Do you feel relaxed?”
You sunk into your chair as you dragged out your words for emphasis, Matt shaking his head as he grabbed at his shirt, pulling it over his head and catching you by surprise.
“How am I supposed to be relaxed when I’m drenched in sweat? That was more stressful than relaxing!” He pretended to wring out his shirt before throwing it over the back of his chair.
“Okay well maybe that was bad planning on my part, I didn’t account for the sun at all.”
The two of you exchange smiles before taking a moment to truly relax, taking in the sounds of the water as you thought of where to lead the conversation next.
“So, your family. Tell me more about them. You started to at Top Golf, but if I remember Trevor started having a meltdown and I had to assist.”
Matt laughed thinking about that group date, his fingers playing with the arm of his chair as he thought about what more there was to say.
“I don’t know, my family is just amazing really. They are my biggest supporters ever. My mom and sisters came to my debut and it was such a crazy thing having them there for a game like that. I’m so thankful for them everyday, because I don’t know if I’d have made it this far without them.”
Seeing the way he lit up talking about his family made your heart melt, it was refreshing to see him away from the group. Where he could really be himself and open up to you.
“And what about your dad? I haven’t heard you talk much about him.” You leaned forward, resting your chin on your hand as you smiled. Giving him all of your attention as you awaited his response. But noticing his smile fade slightly, you knew that you’d maybe struck a nerve.
“Um, my dad, he actually passed away a couple years ago.”
“Oh my god Matt I’m so sorry, I didn’t-“
“You didn’t know, it’s okay. Honest!”
His smile returned as he took your hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze as he continued on. His hand still holding yours as if for some support to talk about his dad.
“He was the best! He sacrificed a lot to give me and my siblings everything he never got growing up. He came from an immigrant family, but he didn’t let that stop him. He was completely self made, starting his own engineering company from scratch. My dad was the most amazing man ever, and my best friend. Going through all of this without him there to guide me and see me finally do it. It’s been tough, you know? There are times I want to just stay home, not go to practice. Leave New York and go back to Calgary and be with my family. But he’d never want me to do that, and so I keep pushing. Treat every shift like it’s my last because, we never knew our moments with him might be ours.”
Wiping a tear from your cheek you chuckled at yourself, trying to pull it together and not get upset in front of Matt. He pulled your hand to get you out of your seat as he wrapped his arms around you. Holding you against his chest as he reassured you that he was okay, and you didn’t need to be sad or feel sorry for him.
“Hey, look at me.”
His hands held your cheeks as he pulled you from his chest, his eyes locking with your as he smiled, earning a laugh from you as you were embarrassed by your sniffling.
“I promise you, it’s okay. I’m the man I am today because of my father, and I’m so thankful for the time I had with him. But I’m okay, you don’t need to cry. Of course I wanted to tell you because things like that are important to talk about in relationships. But I promise I didn’t tell you to make you sad. Okay?”
He pressed a quick kiss to your lips, catching you off guard but you didn’t mind it. Appreciating how much Matt had relaxed around you throughout this date. Which was exactly what you were hoping for.
“Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty gross. Sweaty and covered in sand isn’t the best combo, so how about we head back and get cleaned up? Pretty sure you’ve got another hot date later tonight!”
-
The five guys awarded the group date for this week filed out of the house, gathering around the backyard as they looked at the large canvases set out around the grass. Questioning looks on their faces as to why they were instructed to wear swim trunks if there were painting supplies involved.
“Hey boys!”
They all greeted you as they each found a spot fit with a canvas and supplies. Chuckling to yourself at the looks on their faces, knowing they had no clue what was in store for them.
“I’m sure you all are wondering what the heck is going on here…well today, we are going to be painting.”
As their looks only became more puzzled, you pulled your shirt over your head revealing your bikini top, then followed suit with your shorts to reveal the matching bottoms.
“Except we are the paint brushes!”
The guys all laughed, smirks in their faces as they tried to control their thoughts seeing you in your bathing suit. Quinn smacked Luke on the back of the head and told him to pick his jaw up off the floor. The younger Hughes brother coughing slightly to distract from the drooling he’d just been caught doing.
“You boys use your bodies every time you step on the ice, so I figured we could use your bodies for something different, and that’s painting!”
The guys looked to one another, waiting to see who would be the first to go for it. Nico being the first to discard his shirt, tossing it to the side before picking up a tube of paint and squirting it out onto his chest.
“Oh come on boys, it’s not like we’ve never seen another guy shirtless in our lives!”
With Nico’s chirps the boys all followed, discarding their shirts as they began painting. Some using the predictable route of hands and fingers, while Nico was using his chest and Auston opted for using his legs and butt.
You stopped by each of their stations, seeing how they could use your assistance.
Luke was painting a tree and asked for your handprints to be the apples growing amongst the green. Quinn’s painting was supposedly a sunset, though the colors were blending so much that it all looked like one shade of brown, so he asked you to help brighten it up. Auston was painting an abstract self portrait and asked if you’d do the honor of painting his mustache. John and Nico both somehow ended up deciding to paint roses, which led to a bit of a paint fight between the two of them. More paint ending up on themselves than the actual canvases
“Y/n, can you come take a look at mine?”
Auston called you over to his, the self portrait giving you a good laugh as he wiped his brow. “Honestly, is it a compliment to say this looks like you?”
“I mean, yeah, I think so. That was the goal anyways, so I’ll take it.”
Shaking your head you walked back to check on Quinn, his sunset scene looking a little brighter, though still a bit hard to read. He wore a grumpy look on his face as he sighed, tossing the paint tube to the ground as he looked at you.
“Quinn, it’s okay. Honest. Don’t be so hard on yourself.”
You wrapped an arm around him as he stared at the canvas, a smirk soon coming across his face as he quickly moved to reach for the paint.
“Here, help me throw a bunch of paint on here.”
You didn’t question him, just following his lead as the two of you scattered different colors in different places. Quinn soon took the tubes from your hand and pulled you onto the canvas, guiding you to sit down before he began making snow angels in the paint.
“Quintin Hughes, you’re joking?”
“Oh come on! The painting was ruined anyways, might as well have some fun with it.”
Rolling your eyes you gave in, the two of you using every inch of your bodies to spread the paint around, the other guys just watching and laughing at how ridiculous you looked.
As you two went to stand, you had to hold one another to stop yourself from slipping on the canvas. Quinn helped you off the side as you looked at the masterpiece you’d created.
“Oh fuck, it’s just a brown blob now.”
Quinn threw his hands in the air, laughing it off as you hugged him. Not caring what the canvas looked like, just enjoying the opportunity to see the goofy side to him and have some fun together.
All of you wrapped up the painting as it was time to award the group date rose. The boys waited in anticipation as you took your time to make your decision.
“Quinn, will you accept this rose?”
He smiled shyly from ear to ear, walking over to give you a hug.
“Absolutely I will.”
Kissing you softly before he found his place back with the guys.
“Okay boys, that was a lot of fun! But we’ve all gotta go get cleaned up, there’s a rose ceremony in a few hours!”

Getting the Girl
The Titans were in need of a kicker after Kurt quit the team. If you asked her, that was the reason Y/N was trying out. If you asked Matt, Mike, or Puck, the reason she was trying out was to finally shut Finn Hudson up once and for all. The oaf had made Y/N his latest target to pick on. Mainly because he knew of her crush on his girlfriend Quinn. He liked to rub it in her face that HE was dating her and not Y/N. She couldn't take any more of it. So she decided that she was gonna be McKinley's next kicker.
Puck, Mike, and Matt had tried to talk Y/N out of it but to no avail. So, being the good friends they are, they decided to help Y/N. As they took to the field to help her practice, Sue and the Cheerios had made their way out to do their cardio for the day. The group on the field failed to notice a certain head cheerleader watching them practice along with Santana and Brittany. "Ah, so looks like Y/N is trying out for the team. That's hot." Santana said. Brittany giggled and agreed. "Do you think she'll help me achieve my perfect record of making out with everyone at school?" Quinn's head whipped around. "What?" "Yeah. I have a list of everyone I've made out with and she's not on it. It would mean a lot if she said yes." Quinn shook her head in disbelief before going back to watching the group. Suddenly, a voice called out from behind them. "Hey babe!" Quinn mentally groaned as Santana did it loudly for her. Finn walked up to the trio smiling. He leaned down to kiss Quinn but she turned her head, making him collide with her cheek. "Brittany, Santana." Santana gave him a fake smile as Brittany did the same. "I'm gonna go ask her."
Before Quinn could protest, both Santana and Brittany ran off in the direction of Y/N and the boys. Finn looked where the girls where headed and scoffed. "What's that freak doing out here?" Quinn glared at him. "She's trying out for your team. You need a kicker do you not?" Finn's jaw dropped. "Yeah. But we don't need a fucking dyke on our team. People aren't gonna take us seriously!" He whined. Quinn sighed. "Finn. They don't take you seriously now. What makes you think that's gonna change if a girl joins the team?" Finn groaned. "I'm gonna go give her a piece of my fucking mind. Dykes don't belong on the team." Finn stormed off as Quinn followed after him.
Y/N was talking to Santana and Brittany about things when Finn walked up to them. "Finnocence. Can't you see me and B are trying to seal the deal here?" Finn glared at the two. "And I don't give a flying fuck Lopez. I'm more worried about the fact that there's a dyke freak trying out for my team." Y/N rolled her eyes. "Because you guys suck and need a kicker. That's where I step in Hudson because obviously you can't lead us to a win." Finn scoffed. "I'm the best quarterback this school has ever had. And if you're only trying out for kicker, then why are you also throwing the ball around? It's called kicker, not quarterback." Puck spoke up. "Because idiot, we know Tanaka is gonna test her other skills. And maybe, if we're lucky, he might realize that she's a better quarterback than you."
Finn lunged at the mohawked boy before Y/N shoved him back. "Leave the fucking field Finn. We're done talking to you." He glared at her before turning to Quinn. "Let's go." Quinn stood there not moving. "Quinn. Let's go!" Quinn put on her ice queen glare and turned to the boy. "No Finn. I still have stuff to do. You can go." Finn stood in shock and stormed off to his car. Santana and Brittany looked at Y/N. They were extremely turned on. "So Y/N, does our offer still stand?" Y/N smirked. "Totally." Both Brittany and Santana kissed her cheek before running off.
Puck slapped Y/N on the shoulder. "Good for you dude." Y/N smirked before looking at Quinn who was glaring at her. "What Fabray? Jealous?" Quinn glared at the girl before running off. Matt spoke up. "What's got her panties in a bunch?" Y/N shrugged. "I don't know. Let's get back to practice though."
Y/N followed the boys to their locker room to get their stuff. No one was at school so it would be fine and Y/N was already cool with the team. When they all walked in, they heard groaning and moaning. They all looked at each other and poked their heads around the column of lockers to find a shocking scene.
Finn Hudson was fucking a cheerleader that wasn't Quinn Fabray. All four people witnessing was shocked. Y/N felt anger course through her veins. How dare this idiot cheat on Quinn. Y/N pulled out her phone and snapped a few pictures and videos before all four of them hauled ass out of the locker room.
They ran all the way to Y/N's car. "Holy fuck. What the fuck just happened?" Y/N was still shocked. Puck was angry. "He's a fucking idiot for cheating on her. She needs to know. Hey, maybe if you tell her Y/N she'll give you a chance!" Y/N looked at him. "Are you serious Puck? Really?"
Two days later, after a successful tryout on Y/N's part, pictures of Finn and the girl fucking in the locker room were posted all over the school. Y/N was standing at her locker getting her books when Santana and Brittany walked up to her. "So. We had fun at Breadstix last night. You're actually really cool." Y/N smiled at the girls. "Thank you Santana. And Brittany I hope your record is now perfect." The blonde smiled and nodded. "All thanks to you. Also, have you seen Quinn? I wanna check up on her." Y/N shook her head. "No. It sucks though. Finn is an idiot." Santana nodded. "But hey, you get to have a chance with her." Y/N giggled and shut her locker. "You're starting to sound like Puck." The three walked off to class, not knowing that two people had overheard their conversation.
Y/N was walking to class texting Puck about the game when she was yanked into an empty classroom. "Hey what the fu-!" She was cut off by a hand on her mouth. "Shhh or we'll get in trouble." Y/N finally processed who yanked her in the room. "Quinn?" The blonde smiled at the girl and took her hand off her mouth. "Hi." Y/N smiled at the girl's shyness. "Hi. What's going on? Why did you yank me in here?" Quinn didn't say anything and just pressed her lips against Y/N's. Y/N kissed back almost instantly. The pair pulled away when air was a necessity. "I broke it off with Finn. I wanted to thank you for those pictures." Y/N stuttered before Quinn cut her off again. "Puck told me after I grilled him about it." Y/N's jaw dropped. "That snitch." Quinn giggled. "No. You should thank him. By the way, I'm gonna be cheering for you and only you tonight." She walked off swaying her hips as Y/N watched mesmerized. God, she couldn't wait for tonight.
The game was going awful. Every time Y/N stepped onto the field, Finn would do something to get her tackled. She was hurting all over and Coach kept yelling at Finn and Y/N was getting stressed. She sat on the bench cradling her ribs after a particularly hard hit when Quinn snuck up behind her. "What's up with Finn? Why is he putting you in situations where you're getting hurt?" Y/N shrugged and groaned. "I don't know." Puck ran up to Y/N after coming off the field. "He found out you took and posted the pictures. One of our teammates saw us posting them and overheard us talking about catching Finn in the act." Quinn gasped. Y/N sat shocked. "Fuck."
The game just got worse. Y/N got tackled time and time again much to the amusement of Finn. Tanaka called a timeout during the second quarter. "Hudson what the fresh HELL are you doing out there?! You're killing our kicker!" Finn smirked and sat back on the bench. "Well coach, some people need to be taught a lesson. I'm just doing my job." Tanaka's face turned red. "Did you just blatantly admit that you're doing this shit on purpose?" Finn blanched. "U-um no?" Tanaka pulled him up by his jersey. "YOURE BLOWING THIS GAME FOR US BECAUSE YOU GOT CAUGHT FUCKING SOMEONE ELSE?!" The team snickered at how scared Finn looked. "Y/L/N! You're playing quarterback for the rest of the game. Jameson! You're taking Y/N's place as kicker! Get back on the field!"
Y/N as quarterback was going great. She had managed to get the Titans back in the lead without a dance to distract the other team. Y/N could see Finn sitting on the bench fuming. Behind the bench however was a much better sight. Quinn smiling her million dollar Cheerio smile while yelling for the Titans. God, she was falling for this girl. Hard and fast.
The Titans ended up winning much to everyone's satisfaction (except Finn's). As Y/N was getting changed in the girl's locker room, the door swung open to reveal the oaf in question. Y/N rolled her eyes. "What do you want Hudson?" He glared at the girl. "I want you gone. Off the team. Away from my girl." Y/N smirked. "From what I've heard, she's not really your "girl" anymore." Finn saw red as he swung and connected with the girl's jaw. He only managed to get one hit in before Tanaka was bursting in pulling him off the girl and out of the locker room. Puck, Mike, and Matt helped the girl up. "Damn dude. He really packs a punch." Y/N shrugged. "I'll be okay."
Y/N had her bag on her shoulder as her and the boys headed out of the locker room. Mike had been nice enough to get her some ice for her jaw. As she walked holding the ice against her face, she caught Quinn's eye. She was standing with her parents hoping to introduce them to Y/N. At the sight of Y/N's jaw, she gasped, dropped her Cheerio bag and ran towards the girl. Y/N jumped at the blonde girl suddenly appearing in front of her. "What happened to your jaw? Was it one of their players? I'll kick their ass." Y/N chuckled at the girl's worry. "It wasn't one of their players Q. It was your ex. He ambushed me in the locker room saying that he wanted me off the team and away from you. I'm okay."
Hazel eyes filled with fury as she called Santana and Brittany over. The two suddenly appeared. "What's up Q?" "I want Finn slushied and dumpster tossed for the rest of forever." Y/N went to protest but Quinn put her hand up. "No. He deserves it after all he did to you." Santana smirked. "Aye aye Cap." The two smiled at Y/N before walking off. "I was hoping to introduce you to my parents. They want to meet you." Y/N froze. "Your p-parents?" Quinn smiled at the girl's nervousness before pecking her lips. "Yes. My parents." "Ah, so this is the famous Y/N Quinnie?" Y/N looked behind Quinn to find a blonde woman who looked identical to Quinn standing next to a tall, blonde man. "Yes. Mom, dad, this is Y/N Y/L/N. Y/N, this is Judy and Russell Fabray."
Y/N smiled as best as she could before wincing. "Oh dear. What happened to your face?" Judy cupped Y/N's face. Quinn's eyes darkened. "Finn happened. He ambushed her on the locker room. Y/N is the one who caught him cheating on me." Russell spoke up. "Well I'm glad you caught him Y/N. He didn't deserve my daughter anyway. Now Y/N, my Quinnie has spoken very highly of you. What are your intentions with my daughter?" Y/N looked at Quinn. "To love and appreciate her for as long she'll have me. If your concern with me sir is if I'll treat her better than Finn, then you don't have to worry because I will." Judy and Quinn looked at the girl with shining eyes. Russell smiled and held out his hand. "Welcome to the family Y/N." Y/N smiled and shook his hand. Quinn wrapped her arms around the taller girl's waist, burying her head in her chest. "Can we go home and watch a movie and cuddle?" Y/N smiled and leaned down to peck Quinn's lips.
"Lead the way baby girl."

— "i have a horrible feeling I am a greedy, perverted, selfish, apathetic, cynical, depraved, morally bankrupt woman who can’t even call herself a feminist." - fleabag
MANNERISMS:
What words or phrases do they overuse?
she uses the word ‘basically’ a lot. she also definitely overuses her britishisms but that’s mainly because she’d been living there for the last few years. favouite curse word is ‘fuck’. ends too many sentences with the word ‘me’.
Are they more optimistic or pessimistic?
ellie will tell you she’s a realist, though she does tend towards optimism, particularly when it comes to the outcomes of certain events in her life.
What bad habits do they have?
speaking before she speaks, drinking way too much coffee (and as a result has developed an unhealthy addiction to breath mints, seriously she’s always gone some on her person!), nail biting/picking (particularly when she’s nervous/bored), flirting before thinking (she’s sure your partner is great, she just didn’t consider their existence), pouting until she gets what she wants.
What makes them laugh out loud?
friends reruns, friends in general, lana sullivan. she’s also the sort to laugh at her friends embarrassments/trip ups but would also be the first to bail you out in a bind so figurers that balances things out.
How do they display affection?
little touches (on your arm, your shoulder, your lower back), little gifts/things she’s seen that remind her of you, sending random texts/pictures throughout her day, sharing anecdotes/gossip.
Do they make snap judgements or take time to consider?
she’s an impulsive little sun of a gun, just ask lana. she detests feeling stuck and that has driven her to make many questionable decisions and has resulted in the breaking down of some important relationships in her life.
How do they react to praise?
she THRIVES off of it. like tinkerbell she needs applause and praise to live.
How do they react to criticism?
she’ll tell you she can take it, and that’s not totally untrue, as an actress she has developed a fairly thick skin but she only really takes constructive criticism well. trolly comments on the internet will send her into a tailspin and often result in her seeking some outside affirmation of her awesomeness (often in the form of hookups or friendly cheerleaders).
What is their philosophy of life?
work hard and be kind.
When was the last time they cried?
professionally? daily, her current project requires a lot of mental gymnastics. personally? after meeting up with lana.
If they could change one thing about themselves, what would it be?
apart from forever appearing ageless?? physically she wouldn’t mind being a little taller, but she thinks her face is nice and her ass is good so she happy with her appearance. there are a lot of internal things she’d change about herself but mainly she’d like to be braver and a little more vulnerable about the things that matter with the people she loves.
What is their obsession?
herself?? sex?? skin care??
What are their pet peeves?
she does get annoyed easily and pinning down what will set her off from one day to the next isn’t an exact science but some things that never fail are slow walkers, people who talk on their phone in public, traffic (she probs shouldn’t drive bc the road rage is real), and people who insist on continuing conversations when she’s clearly checked out.
FRIENDS&FAMILY:
Is their family big or small? Who does it consist of?
pretty small, just her dad, step mum and gran left.
What is their perception of family?
family used to be everything but after her mum passed ellie hasn’t been super connected to her family, with the exception of her gran who is her favouite person in the whole world.
Do they have siblings? Older or younger?
she’s an only child, i’m sure this surprises no one.
Describe their best friend.
the real yin to her yang and the one person she will never put the moves on because it would totally ruin their vibe. also it would be weird because they are basically sisters at this point. if ellie is ever able to sit still long enough to sit and think things through things it is down to this person. big mom friend vibes. 10/10 angel on earth.
Do they have any pets?
oh god no, she shouldn’t be trusted to care for a living creature.
PAST&FUTURE:
What was your character like as a teen?
not unlike herself now, which speaks to her emotional maturity but much more moody and reckless, very little regard for the consequences of her actions, and pretty listless/unmotivated. she’s since learned to reel some of that in as she’s focussed on her career.
Did they grow up rich or poor?
middle class, they were comfortable, but they didn’t go on holiday every school break or anything.
Did they grow up nurtured or neglected?
nurtured, but when she lost her mum she an her dad started to neglect each other.
What is their greatest achievement?
winning a bafta.
What was their first kiss like?
awkward and the result of a game of spin the bottle gone wrong -- she’d really wanted to kiss matt jones but instead the bottle had landed on rory tyler.
What is the worst thing they did to someone they loved?
LEFT THEM AT THE ALTAR?!
What are their ambitions?
she’d really like to have a career that lasts past her 35th birthday
What advice would they give their younger self?
hang in there, be kinder to mum, go easier on dad, don’t forget to keep your promises.
What smells remind them of their childhood?
cinnamon sugar and french toast, mum would make it every sunday.
What was their childhood ambition?
to be an actress and a unicorn doctor, so she’s definitely lived up to some of her childhood ambitions!
What does their five-year plan look like?
become a house hold name, successfully bake banana bread, take a dance class, learn to play piano, take someone she loves to an awards show.
LOVE:
Do they believe in love at first sight?
no, not even a little which is funny because she is definitely the sort to fall quickly.
Are they in a relationship? Are they in love?
no, but she is still in love with her ex so that’s fun. particularly for someone whose default is to seek vey surface level/fun ‘relationships’.
How do they behave in a relationship?
depends on the relationship and the person, honestly. ellie hasn’t been in many serious relationships because she typically bolts at the first sign of feeeelings as she tends to lean towards her need for freedom rather than commitment but on the rare occasion her heart has fallen before her brain was able to catch on she’s been quite happy to hermit with her partner. she becomes so smitten the idea of wanting someone else escapes her completely.
When did your character last have sex?
probably last night. or this morning. she’s a ho and she doesn’t like to be alone. that’s when things like thinking happen and that’s no good!
Has your character ever been in love?
yes, twice. and both instances left her gutted.
Have they ever had their heart broken?
she has, but in the end it’s usually by herself as she has the tendency to leave before she gets left.
Are they crushing on anyone now? Tag them!
lana (and also probs sabrina lbh): @lauralaword , sean: @gapsofsvnlight , quinn: @sonderbound , and probs pyper: @chvrryglcss bc she seems emotionally unavailable and ellie likes a challenge, plus she a babe. guys i said she’s a ho.
WORK&LIFE:
What is their current job?
actress, she’s also an aspiring screen writer/playwright and director, but that’s mainly born of fear of what she’ll do when the industry decides she’s too old to play a lead
What do they think about their current job?
loves it, a +, everything she’d hoped it be even if the hours are maybe a bit longer than she’d like and she doesn’t always love feeling like she has to hide parts of herself from rabid fans/news sources, but she likes her privacy.
What are some of their past jobs?
bag girl, ride attendant, bartender (at uni), nanny, waitress, and snow white for a tick!
What are their hobbies?
she likes to read and netflix, but her main hobby is bugging her mates until they entertain her.
Educational background?
went to the royal academy of dramatic art in london where she studied acting.
Do they have a natural talent for something?
photography, the written word, charming her way into your pants.
Do they play a sport? Are they any good?
no, she does not sport well nor does she understand any of the rules. her disdain for football is just another point of contention between her and her father.
MISC:
What is in their fridge?
a half drank bottle of vodka, seltzer, diet coke, some probiotics she never takes and a variety of take out containers. she does not cook.
What is on their bedside table?
cellphone charger, a book she’s been trying to finish for ages, and a sound machine.
What kinda car do they drive, and is their car messy or clean?
honestly she couldn’t tell you the make or model unless she read the manual butt it gets her to auditions and that’s all that matters. it’s basically always got at least three changes of clothes and a takeaway coffee cup and/or wrapper somewhere so if you think that’s messy...
Do they carry a purse? What is in their purse or wallet?
usually, but if she’s out at retrograde she’ll pair her essentials down to things that can fit in her pocket -- basically that means a lip (red if she’s feeling feisty or insecure), her debit card, her cell and some mints. her purse has at any given time four different lips, a chapstick, some gloss, three packs of gum, mints, a pack of emergency smokes (for when things get intense and she needs to break her clean streak), her wallet, a compact, an umbrella, and so many receipts!
What is in their pockets?
if she has her purse they’re likely empty, if she doesn’t all the things. also sometimes her hands when she doesn’t know what to do with them.
What is their most treasured possession?
her mums wedding band, she wears it basically all the time on her index finger.

15 Books I Want To Read That are Releasing in the Next 6 Monthes
Every six monthes, I am excited to see the new LGBTQA+ YA books of the next monthes and while thos December, I was a little weirded out to not find them on B&N Teen previews, I was happy to see that Dahlia Adler posted her lists and opinions at lgbtqreads.com. So, of course I went through and narrowed the list from 72 to 34 to 15, only choosing books that I felt I really wanted to read and not just fall for all the amazing synopses and covers, which let's be honest, are all truly masterpieces.
But enough introduction. Let's get into my to be bought (and read) list of the first six monthes of 2020:
We Used to Be Friends by Amy Spalding - JANUARY 7TH
Goodreads Synopsis: Told in dual timelines—half of the chapters moving forward in time and half moving backward—We Used to Be Friends explores the most traumatic breakup of all: that of childhood besties. At the start of their senior year in high school, James (a girl with a boy’s name) and Kat are inseparable, but by graduation, they’re no longer friends. James prepares to head off to college as she reflects on the dissolution of her friendship with Kat while, in alternating chapters, Kat thinks about being newly in love with her first girlfriend and having a future that feels wide open. Over the course of senior year, Kat wants nothing more than James to continue to be her steady rock, as James worries that everything she believes about love and her future is a lie when her high-school sweetheart parents announce they’re getting a divorce. Funny, honest, and full of heart, We Used to Be Friends tells of the pains of growing up and growing apart.
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: Relationship breakups may be heavily covered in YA, but friendship breakup stories are still few and far between. Enter the story of James and Kat, two girls who were once beyond close and now watch their friendship unravel as college nears. Things are complicated for both girls: James’s mother has left her and her father for another guy, and she doesn’t know how to talk about it, not even to Kat or her still-too-present ex, Logan. Kat’s discovering that her feelings for her new friend Quinn aren’t strictly “friendly,” and in fact, she’s realizing she’s bisexual and falling head over heels for a girl. It’s a bittersweet story to be sure, and while it definitely has its fun scenes, close moments, painful familial interactions, and tingly romance (what Spalding book doesn’t??), you’ll spend much of the book wishing you could push the characters together and say “Just talk already”…but isn’t that exactly how life goes?
My Opinion: As someone who has been through too many friendship breakups to count, this read is going to be devastating. But I put this book on my list for one reason: the synopsis made it feel so much like life that I couldn't help but feel that the story would pull me into James and Kat's universe and tear my heart into pieces. I absolutely cannot wait to have my heartbroken.

The Gravity of Us by Phil Stamper - FEBRUARY 4TH
Goodreads Synopsis: As a successful social media journalist with half a million followers, seventeen-year-old Cal is used to sharing his life online. But when his pilot father is selected for a highly publicized NASA mission to Mars, Cal and his family relocate from Brooklyn to Houston and are thrust into a media circus.
Amidst the chaos, Cal meets sensitive and mysterious Leon, another “Astrokid,” and finds himself falling head over heels—fast. As the frenzy around the mission grows, so does their connection. But when secrets about the program are uncovered, Cal must find a way to reveal the truth without hurting the people who have become most important to him.
Expertly capturing the thrill of first love and the self-doubt all teens feel, debut author Phil Stamper is a new talent to watch.
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: This is a lovely and bighearted debut chock full of space nerdery, big dreams, new beginnings, and social media scandal. Cal’s life is completely uprooted when his dad shocks them all by being chosen for a space mission, something his family had never taken seriously as a lifelong dream. Worst of all, he’s forbidden from documenting life in the new compound, forcing him to leave his massive social media following behind. On the bright side, there’s Leon, son of another astronaut on the program and immediate thief of Cal’s heart. But when things go awry in the program and secrets are revealed, Cal will have to decide exactly what he’s willing to do to get the truth out there, and who he’s willing to lose.
My Opinion: Social Media? Media circus? Texas? NASA? First loves? And a choice that could implode Cal's life from the inside? The name Cal? Other than Texas, a state which I hate, all of this adds up to something good, hopefully so good that I can forget that Texas is involved at all. So, basically, it has to reach Red, White, and Royal Blue levels, which is the only book so far that has made me like Texas at all. But I trust that it will do well. Plus it was reviewed by 4 of authors on my queer bookshelf - Becky Albertalli, Adam Silvera, Shaun David Hutchinson, and Caleb Roehrig. Bonus points for not being a graphic novel like I feared it was.

Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales -MARCH 3RD
Goodreads Synopsis: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets Clueless, inspired by Grease.
When Ollie meets his dream guy, Will, over summer break, he thinks he’s found his Happily Ever After. But once summer’s ended, Will stops texting him back, and Ollie finds himself one prince short of a fairytale ending. To complicate the fairytale further, a family emergency sees Ollie uprooted and enrolled at a new school across the country—Will’s school—where Ollie finds that the sweet, affectionate and comfortably queer guy he knew from summer isn’t the same one attending Collinswood High. This Will is a class clown, closeted—and, to be honest, a bit of a jerk.
Ollie has no intention of pining after a guy who clearly isn’t ready for a relationship. But as Will starts ‘coincidentally’ popping up in every area of Ollie’s life, from music class to the lunch table, Ollie finds his resolve weakening. The last time he gave Will his heart, Will handed it back to him trampled and battered. Ollie would have to be an idiot to trust him with it again.
Right? Right.
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: Grease goes gay YA in this rom-com about two boys whose dreamy summer fling comes crashing into a harsh reality when our lead, Oliver, transfers to Will’s school thanks to a family crisis-driven move, only to find out Will isn’t Out and isn’t about to be. As Ollie finds his own ways to settle in, he can’t seem to shake Will’s presence. But whether there’s a future for them remains to be seen. This sophomore novel is warmly delightful and delightfully warm, with some tears on the side for the aforementioned family crisis, and some hard-earned queer solidarity is the icing on the cake.
My Opinion: The last musical-ly queer book I read was What If It's Us? so Ollie and Will have a lot to live up to, but it gets points for getting an Instagram shoutout from Becky Albertalli herself. From the synopses, it sounds like a case of strangers to lovers to strangers to maybe friends to maybe something more and hopefully a happy ending, but what I look forward to the most is rewriting Summer Nights as I read this book.

Super Adjacent by Crystal Cestari - MARCH 17TH
Goodreads Synopsis: Claire has always wanted to work with superheroes, from collecting Warrior Nation cards as a kid to drafting "What to Say to a Hero" speeches in her diary. Now that she's landed a coveted internship with the Chicago branch of Warrior Nation, Claire is ready to prove she belongs, super or not. But complicating plans is the newest WarNat hero, Girl Power (aka Joy), who happens to be egotistical and self-important ... and pretty adorable.
Bridgette, meanwhile, wants out of WarNat. After years of dating the famous Vaporizer (aka Matt), she's sick of playing second, or third, or five-hundredth fiddle to all the people-in-peril in the city of Chicago. Of course, once Bridgette meets Claire-who's clearly in need of a mentor and wingman-giving up WarNat becomes slightly more complicated. It becomes a lot more complicated when Joy, Matt, and the rest of the heroes go missing, leaving only Claire and Bridgette to save the day.
In this fresh and funny take on the world of supers, author Crystal Cestari spotlights what it's like to be the seemingly non-super half of a dynamic duo with banter-filled romance and bold rescues perfect for readers seeking a great escape.
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: Claire is a superhero fangirl, a card-carrying member of Warrior Nation. And when she finds an unexpected way (with some unexpected help) into winning an internship with the Chicago WarNat branch, it should be everything she’s ever dreamed of. But that unexpected help is proving very difficult to work with; it’s in the form of Girl Power (aka Joy), the newest hero and a pain in Claire’s butt. A very, very cute pain in Claire’s butt. But distraction or no distraction, Claire’s determined to prove herself, especially when she and Bridgette, a WarNat, who’s tired of being “the girlfriend” to an even more famous hero, decides to mentor her and they end up having to be exactly the heroes Chicago needs.
My Opinion: Two words. Super. Heroes.

Music From Another World by Robin Talley - MARCH 31ST
Goodreads Synopsis: It’s summer 1977 and closeted lesbian Tammy Larson can’t be herself anywhere. Not at her strict Christian high school, not at her conservative Orange County church and certainly not at home, where her ultrareligious aunt relentlessly organizes antigay political campaigns. Tammy’s only outlet is writing secret letters in her diary to gay civil rights activist Harvey Milk…until she’s matched with a real-life pen pal who changes everything.
Sharon Hawkins bonds with Tammy over punk music and carefully shared secrets, and soon their letters become the one place she can be honest. The rest of her life in San Francisco is full of lies. The kind she tells for others—like helping her gay brother hide the truth from their mom—and the kind she tells herself. But as antigay fervor in America reaches a frightening new pitch, Sharon and Tammy must rely on their long-distance friendship to discover their deeply personal truths, what they’ll stand for…and who they’ll rise against.
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: Talley is one of queer YA’s most prolific genre jumpers, but she seems to be making herself beautifully at home in historical with this follow-up to 2018’s Pulp, again set amid a context of vital queer American history. This time around, it’s 1977, and Tammy Larson would love more than anything to come out of the closet as a lesbian, but that’s a major no-go where she lives. Her only outlet is to write “letters” to the activist Harvey Milk, at least until she’s matched with a pen pal to whom she can write letters for real. Sharon makes for a much better companion than Tammy’s diary, and she can sympathize, given her brother is gay and feeling all the same misery in the wake of Anita Bryant’s leading to a successful repeal of their protections. Together they’ll find their own brand of activism and learn to fight back against a world of hate.
My Opinion: Ever since reading Annie On My Mind by Nancy Garden, I have been craving more historical sapphic girls. With Pulp in my Kindle library and this in my future shopping cart + Casey McQuiston's time traveling book in 2021, I am bound to get a fix for that craving soon. Hopefully, it will also cure heartbreak.
Loveless by Alice Oseman - APRIL 2ND
Goodreads Synopsis: The fourth novel from the phenomenally talented Alice Oseman – one of the most authentic and talked-about voices in contemporary YA.
Georgia feels loveless – in the romantic sense, anyway. She’s eighteen, never been in a relationship, or even had a crush on a single person in her whole life. She thinks she's an anomaly, people call her weird, and she feels a little broken. But she still adores romance – weddings, fan fiction, and happily ever afters. She knows she’ll find her person one day … right?
After a disastrous summer, Georgia is now at university, hundreds of miles from home. She is more determined than ever to find love – and her annoying roommate, Rooney, is a bit of a love expert, so perhaps she can help.
But maybe Georgia just doesn’t feel that way about guys. Or girls. Or anyone at all. Maybe that's okay. Maybe she can find happiness without falling in love. And maybe Rooney is a little more loveless than she first appears.
LOVELESS is a journey of identity, self-acceptance, and finding out how many different types of love there really are. And that no one is really loveless after all.
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: Oseman’s crossed the pond before with Radio Silence, so this American’s fingers are crossed she’ll do it again with her newest, about a girl named Georgia who’s struggling with the fact that she’s eighteen and has never had so much as a crush. She’s sick of people thinking she’s broken or weird, and it isn’t like she isn’t into romance; she’s just not into it for herself. When she gets to university, she thinks maybe she can “fix” things with her roommate’s help. But what if it turns out there’s nothing to fix, and Georgia’s great and perfectly capable of happiness just as she is?
My Opinion: Alice Oseman has written a-spec characters before, but it's possible that this seemingly aromantic character will be the one that I'll read first. Not to say Radio Silence wasn't amazing, I just wouldn't know. But I can't wait to find out when I read it after I read this one. And then maybe her other books too.

Verona Comics by Jennifer Dugan - APRIL 21ST
Goodreads Synopsis: Jubilee has it all together. She’s an elite cellist, and when she’s not working in her stepmom’s indie comic shop, she’s prepping for the biggest audition of her life. Ridley is barely holding it together. His parents own the biggest comic-store chain in the country, and Ridley can’t stop disappointing them–that is, when they’re even paying attention. They meet one fateful night at a comic convention prom, and the two can’t help falling for each other. Too bad their parents are at each other’s throats every chance they get, making a relationship between them nearly impossible . . . unless they manage to keep it a secret. Then again, the feud between their families may be the least of their problems. As Ridley’s anxiety spirals, Jubilee tries to help but finds her focus torn between her fast-approaching audition and their intensifying relationship. What if love can’t conquer all? What if each of them needs more than the other can give?
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: Dugan debuted with one of my absolute favorite queer YA rom-coms (seriously, if you haven’t yet read Hot Dog Girl, do yourself a favor), so I’m thrilled to see her returning with another one, this one an m/f pairing where both halves of the couple are bi (or, more accurately, one is bi and one is still figuring it out). [Jubilee] is an elite cellist with a major audition coming up and a side job working at her stepmom’s indie comic shop. Ridley works at his parents’ comic shop too, only theirs is a big chain, and no friend to the little guy. Which makes it a little difficult when the two meet at a comic-con prom and immediately hit it off, despite their family feud. I’ll take Romeo & Juliet with a much happier ending and heaps of bisexuality any day, wouldn’t you?
My Opinion: Romeo and Juliet retelling + comic convention prom + bisexuality + indie comic shops = a recipe for me to like a book.

When You Get the Chance by Tom Ryan and Robin Stevenson-MAY 5TH
Goodreads Synopsis: [Edited] Cousins Mark [from the East coast of Canada] and Talia [from the West coast of Canada] go on a road trip to Pride in Toronto as they search for love and adventure and uncover family secrets along the way.
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: One of the things I’m often asked to recommend is books that feature mlm and wlw solidarity, and I especially love giving answers that show it not just in characters but in authorship. Here, two Canadian rock stars of queer YA come together with a story about cousins named Mark and Talia who are reunited from their respective Canadian coasts after a death in the family and decide to take a road trip together to Toronto so Talia can see her non-binary partner and Mark can get to Pride. The two don’t have much in common, and they’ll have to let Mark’s little sister tag along, but they both know some kind of magic awaits them in TO, and they can’t wait to get there.
My Opinion: There is too much to love about this book. Canada! WLW or WLNB/MLM solidarity! Canadian road trip! Road trips in general! Canadian Pride! PRIDE IN GENERAL! A nonbinary s/o! TORONTO, CANADA! And family secrets! Plus it gives off You Know Me Well vibes, and that's one of my favorites.

The Extraordinaries by T.J. Klune - MAY 5TH
Goodreads Synopsis:
Some people are extraordinary. Some are just extra.
Nick Bell? Not extraordinary. But being the most popular fanfiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right?
After a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City’s mightiest hero (and Nick’s biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he’ll do it with or without the reluctant help of Seth Gray, Nick’s best friend (and maybe the love of his life).
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: Klune’s doing double duty this year (or maybe even more? Damn, it’s hard to keep up), following up an adult contemporary fantasy with his first entry into YA, about a boy named Nick who happens to be the Extraordinaries fandom’s most popular fanfic writer, and who aims to be even more extraordinary when he meets the hero he’s been crushing on. (But maybe he’s in love with his best friend, Seth? It’s complicated. It’s always complicated.)
My Opinion: What can I say? I'm a sucker for books about fanfic writers. And for best friends to lovers stories, so hopefully this is one, and not a fan-dates-hero story.

The Summer of Impossibilities by Rachel Allen - MAY 12TH
Goodreads Synopsis: Skyler, Ellie, Scarlett and Amelia Grace are forced to spend the summer at the lake house where their moms became best friends.
One can’t wait. One would rather gnaw off her own arm than hang out with a bunch of strangers just so their moms can drink too much wine and sing Journey two o’clock in the morning. Two are sisters. Three are currently feuding with their mothers.
One almost sets her crush on fire with a flaming marshmallow. Two steal the boat for a midnight joyride that goes horribly, awkwardly wrong. All of them are hiding something.
One falls in love with a boy she thought she despised. Two fall in love with each other. None of them are the same at the end of the summer.
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: Allen’s been a personal favorite of mine since her subversive feminist debut, 17 First Kisses, and I’m thrilled to see her releasing her first queer YA, which basically looks like a gay Traveling Pants except not all the girls actually wanna be spending the summer together at the lake house where their moms became besties. Most of them can’t even stand their moms right now. All of them have secrets. And two of them…well, two of them are in love with each other, so one way or another it’s gonna be a hell of a summer.
My Opinion: Look, I'm going to be honest, I saw that it was co.pared to Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and I immediately added it to my list. Plus, strangers to friends to lovers? I love.
Date Me, Bryson Keller! by Kevin van Whye - MAY 19TH
Goodreads Synopsis: What If It's Us meets To All the Boys I've Loved Before in this upbeat and heartfelt boy-meets-boy romance that feels like a modern twist on a '90s rom-com!
Everyone knows about the dare: Each week, Bryson Keller must date someone new--the first person to ask him out on Monday morning. Few think Bryson can do it. He may be the king of Fairvale Academy, but he's never really dated before.
Until a boy asks him out, and everything changes.
Kai Sheridan didn't expect Bryson to say yes. So when Bryson agrees to secretly go out with him, Kai is thrown for a loop. But as the days go by, he discovers there's more to Bryson beneath the surface, and dating him begins to feel less like an act and more like the real thing. Kai knows how the story of a gay boy liking someone straight ends. With his heart on the line, he's awkwardly trying to navigate senior year at school, at home, and in the closet, all while grappling with the fact that this "relationship" will last only five days. After all, Bryson Keller is popular, good-looking, and straight . . . right?
Kevin van Whye delivers an uplifting and poignant coming-out love story that will have readers rooting for these two teens to share their hearts with the world--and with each other.
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: If this book looks like the cutest, fluffiest, most make-you-melt kind of romance, it’s because it is…at least in the little romantic bubble that ensued when when Kai took advantage of a dare that requires Bryson Keller to agree to date the first person to ask him out every Monday morning for that week. But outside the bubble, the world is still wondering who Bryson Keller’s mystery girlfriend is, the one person not to shout from the rooftops that she’s got the guy. And Kai isn’t gonna be the one to tell them it isn’t a girl at all; his spontaneous request made Bryson the first and only person he’s ever come out to. But when both the answer and Kai himself are forcibly outed, he and the boy he’s come to fall for, the boy who’s only just realized he himself is gay, will have to band together and put their relationship through the ultimate test.
My Opinion: A lot of these books are comparing themselves to Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, and this one's even comparing itself to To All the Boys I've Loved Before, so it's basically setting me up for disappointment, but I will admit, I am judging this book by it's cover, and that smile is too cute to resist.

I Kissed Alice by Anna Birch - MAY 26TH
Goodreads Synopsis: For fans of Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda and Fangirl, I Kissed Alice is a romantic comedy about enemies, lovers, and everything in between.
Rhodes and Iliana couldn't be more different, but that's not why they hate each other. Hyper-gifted artist Rhodes has always excelled at Alabama's Conservatory of the Arts despite a secret bout of creator's block, while transfer student Iliana tries to outshine everyone with her intense, competitive work ethic. Since only one of them can get the coveted Capstone scholarship, the competition between them is fierce.
They both escape the pressure on a fanfic site where they are unknowingly collaborating on a graphic novel. And despite being worst enemies in real life, their anonymous online identities I-Kissed-Alice and Curious-in-Cheshire are starting to like each other...a lot. When the truth comes out, will they destroy each other's future?
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: Sign me the hell up for literally every enemies-to-lovers f/f rom-com, but especially this one, where the girls who hate each other at Alabama’s Conservatory for the Arts have no idea they’re falling for each other online as they collaborate on a graphic novel for a fanfic site under their online identities. That’s…everything I love in book? Yep, pretty much!
My Opinion: This one is on my list because Alice is basically my favorite sapphic girl name ever after my rewrite of the song, All the Girls Love Alice. Unfortunately, neither girl is named Alice, but it does seem to involve something about Alice in Wonderland. Maybe the graphic novel they're creating is a queer retelling of the classic story? Can't wait to find out.

Six Angry Girls by Adrienne Kisner - JUNE 2ND
Goodreads Synopsis: A story of mock trial, feminism, and the inherent power found in a pair of knitting needles.
Raina Petree is crushing her senior year, until her boyfriend dumps her, the drama club (basically) dumps her, the college of her dreams slips away, and her arch-nemesis triumphs.
Things aren’t much better for Millie Goodwin. Her father treats her like a servant, and the all-boy Mock Trial team votes her out, even after she spent the last three years helping to build its success.
But then, an advice columnist unexpectedly helps Raina find new purpose in a pair of knitting needles and a politically active local yarn store. This leads to an unlikely meeting in the girls’ bathroom, where Raina inspires Millie to start a rival team. The two join together and recruit four other angry girls to not only take on Mock Trial, but to smash the patriarchy in the process.
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: Kisner is three for three in putting gloriously queer YA on shelves, and I am in love with the idea of this newest, which takes the famous “Twelve Angry Men” and situates it in Mock Trial with an ace lead. Raina’s killing it at life, until suddenly she isn’t. Millie’s in a similar spot, having just been ousted from the all-male Mock Trial team. When the two pair up to start a rival girls’ team, it isn’t just their opponents they’re gunning for—it’s the whole motherfluffin’ patriarchy.
My Opinion:

The State of Us by Shaun David Hutchinson - JUNE 2ND
Goodreads Synopsis: The State of Us is the story of Dean and Dre—the 16-year-old sons of the Republican and Democratic candidates for President of the United States—who fall in love on the sidelines of their parents' presidential campaigns.
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis: Tis the year for political YAs, for obvious reasons, and this contemporary romance also does double duty of being a touching demisexual coming out story that happens to take place across the aisle. (The political aisle, that is.) When Dean, the son the of the Republican candidate, and Dre, son of the Democratic candidate, find themselves locked in close quarters, they’re surprised to find that they quite enjoy the company of someone else who knows what it’s like to be in the junior spotlight. Soon, romance sparks, which is a bit of problem considering the whole “opponents” thing, not to mention Dean still trying to figure out how to deal with and discuss the fact that he’s demisexual. But someone out there seems determined to make their problem much, much bigger, and they’ll have to figure out who wants their relationship outed, how they can make it work, and how they can reconcile a future.
My Opinion: While unfortunately this love story has no Prince from England or Wales, this book is definitely in the same genre as Red, White, and Royal Blue, though of course Dean and Dre will be more YA than our favorite international political couple. No matter what, I can tell I'm going to love the angst in this one.

The Falling in Love Montage by Clara Smyth - JUNE 9TH
Goodreads Synopsis:
Saoirse doesn’t believe in love at first sight or happy endings. If they were real, her mother would still be able to remember her name and not in a care home with early onset dementia. A condition that Saoirse may one day turn out to have inherited. So she’s not looking for a relationship. She doesn’t see the point in igniting any romantic sparks if she’s bound to burn out.
But after a chance encounter at a house party, Saoirse is about to break her own rules. For a girl with one blue freckle, an irresistible sense of mischief, and a passion for rom-coms.
Unbothered by Saoirse’s rulebook, Ruby proposes a loophole: They don’t need true love to have one summer of fun, complete with every cliché, rom-com montage-worthy date they can dream up—and a binding agreement to end their romance come fall. It would be the perfect plan, if they weren’t forgetting one thing about the Falling in Love Montage: when it’s over, the characters actually fall in love… for real.
Dahlia Adler's Synopsis:
Love books that make you laugh, swoon, and cry? Then you are going to fall head over heels for Smyth’s debut, an Ireland-set romantic contemporary about a girl named Saiorse who’s losing her mother to early-onset dementia and is determined never to get involved with anyone as a result…until she meets Ruby, and all bets are off. The girls agree to a no-strings-attached summer of just the good parts of romance, the movie montage where the couple does all sorts of fun things as they fall in love. But when the end of the summer comes, will they be able to let go?
My Opinion: The falling in love montage is my favorite part of love stories and I can't wait to read one set in Ireland! No strings attached? I don't think so Saiorse and Ruby. If they aren't together by the end of the book, I'll be tying the strings myself and writing fanfiction for days. I've only had one relationship that would qualify for a falling in love montage, most likely because I've only been in love once, and that's... ended, so I need something to fill my heart and this book just might be it.

CHAOS 95 - Beyond the Belle
OOC: This segment was co written by amazing write Mia. Thank you for this opportunity!!
"Rebel Yell" by Billy Idol performed by Sershen & Zaritskaya plays and the Carnage Legion cheers as Belle Silva makes her appearance at the top of the ramp, all smiles and sparkles. She heads down to the ring and climbs in through the ropes, taking her seat as “In the Meantime” by Spacehog takes the place of “Rebel Yell.” The Carnage Legion isn’t as receptive to Adrienne Levi, who comes out on stage and waves awkwardly at everyone looking in her direction as she heads to the ring. Belle gives her a welcoming smile as Adrienne sits across from her and the music dies down. Belle Silva: Thanks for joining me Adrienne on this episode! Now, before we begin, how are you feeling after your run in with the Lab Rat King on last Chaos? Perhaps subconsciously, Adrienne touches her neck as she considers Belle’s first question. Adrienne Levi: Sore’s the obvious answer. But well, you saw him. He caused a lot of pain but I wouldn’t have it any different. It was a whirlwind of emotions but I’ve never felt more alive than I do when I compete in this ring. Even if it happens to be against someone like him. Belle nods, her face showing concern, but smiling as she continues. Belle Silva: Well, I for one applaud your tenacity and dedication to getting better. Now moving on, we’ve seen so many new faces lately in Carnage, with your name being on that list. You’ve had a less than stellar start truth be told, what do you believe you need to do to get back on track? Adrienne Levi: I don’t know, Belle. That’s why I’m trying to better myself. There are a lot of great veterans here. Some have reached out to me privately so I’d like to keep that as such. Some more public like Matt Knox who has been an excellent source of knowledge. Belle Silva: I’ve definitely noticed improvements since you first joined us. I’m happy you seem to be finding your own path. Now, I know you’ve mentioned Matt Knox and since he was my first guest on my show since it’s relaunch I have to ask. Are you training with Matt or are you just getting advice from him outside the ring? Adrienne Levi: Training. I guess it would be a fair assessment to say that I’m a little green. Seeking another perspective has been beneficial. As for advice? A little. No offense to Matt, he won’t ever face the same adversity that myself - or any woman in this industry, would. These are … troubled waters no matter who is on top. I’ve seen that whether it was well intended or not. My ears are open for someone who may just understand what this journey is. Belle nods in agreement, again giving Adrienne an encouraging smile. Belle Silva: So Adrienne, you’ve proven to be quite tenacious in your short time here in Carnage, what else makes you stand out from the crowd of talent in the back? Adrienne smiles, shuffling her feet a little. The small crowd swells as they show a bit of appreciation. Something has clicked possibly with these people. Adrienne Levi: I don’t think I stand out much. I’ve worked hard, sure. I’ve been in this business for most of my adult life and so maybe the rookie label might be a little dishonest. I don’t want to seem like I’m just spouting off platitudes here but win or lose, I’d like to make people proud. Make no mistake, I am doing this for me. And I’d expect anyone out there, anyone who is listening to my voice… Silently, she takes a little more of the camera’s view to look directly at the viewers. Adrienne Levi: ...anyone who is looking in my eyes, if I am anything like you - you ought to take what is owed to you. It won’t be easy, but I promise it will be worth it. Belle’s smile turns encouraging and she gives Adrienne her own round of applause before moving on. Belle Silva: In preparation for our little powwow, I’ve done some research and it looks like you and Danny Levi, a once prominent star on the indies, were once married? Does he have any plans to come to Carnage as well, or do you have any connection to him still? Adrienne looks suddenly uncomfortable, but before she can get a chance to respond she is interrupted by “Apex Predator” by Otep as Mia Rayne shows up on stage. Assuming the interview is over, Adrienne takes that as her cue to leave as Belle stays seated, wide eyed in fear. Mia doesn’t have the Mitaxia mask on, instead replaced by a look of pure derangement. She twitches toward Adrienne as she tries to slide by unnoticed and Mia snarls, instead pushing Adrienne out of her way, as hard as she can, right into the barrier! Mia’s eyes return to her target, Belle Silva. As she reaches the ring, Mia reaches a hand out, being handed a mic almost immediately. Mia Rayne: He contacted you instead of me! Belle stammers and gets up out of her chair, backing slowly up to the opposite side of the ring as Mia enters. Mia Rayne: He went to YOU first, instead of coming to ME, the person who is SUPPOSED to be his girlfriend if he ever grew the BALLS to face me! He was AT YOUR HOME! WHERE THE FUCK IS ATAXIA YOU STUPID... Mia cuts herself off as she launches herself at Belle! Grabbing the interviewer by the scruff of the neck, Mia pulls her to within an inch of her face and growls. Mia Rayne: Tell me where the fuck he is and why you’re so important that he would contact YOU before ME. Why are you so important Belle, hmm? Are you just out to ruin my life by stealing my sister AND any hope I had at reuniting Ataxia? She doesn’t get an answer though as Zephyr Quinn rolls out from under the ring and sneaks in behind Mia, grabbing her by the back of the head and pulling her down into a modified inverted DDT! Zephyr bounces back up and kicks at Mia who is trying to recover. Zephyr Quinn: Stay OUT of my life! I’m tired of you interfering in EVERYTHING I do! Zephyr kneels down to try and club Mia with the forgotten mic, but is stopped by a gentle hand on her shoulder. Belle pulls Zephyr off of Mia and into a massive hug. Zephyr’s body relaxes as the two go to get out of the ring. They both are stopped as Mia roars as she gets back to her feet. Zephyr quickly steps between her sister and Belle the two staring daggers at each other before launching at each other! Zephyr is first to strike with a superman punch, dazing Mia and forcing the bigger sister back. “The Crazy Angel” is about to follow up, but stops herself as she spots Adrienne getting cautiously and uncertainly back into the ring. Zephyr gives her a quick nod in encouragement and notes her getting up onto the top turnbuckle, albeit unsteady. Seizing the opportunity, Zephyr steps in front of Mia, so that she still hasn’t spotted Adrienne. Zephyr Quinn: You, me. Chaos 96. Ultraviolence match. One way of the other Mia, this thing where you go to war against me? It’s over. Come back when you have control of yourself. With that Zephyr delivers a stiff boot to the chest, doubling over Mia, before dropping to her knees, and springing up, driving the top of her head right under Mia’s chin! Mia pops up and stumbles, finally turning toward Adrienne as Levi leaps off and hits Mia with her closest attempt at a tornado DDT! Zephyr leaps up in the air, but sees Mia still won’t stay down. She grabs Adrienne and pushes her toward Belle as the three of them leave a beaten Mia, sobbing to herself in the middle of the ring.

off the rack #1241
Monday, December 17, 2018
I got sucked into the vortex that happens this time of year for social events that I couldn't avoid. We went out to dinner on Friday at Grow Your Roots Café in Kanata with our vegetarian friends to celebrate my and Brian's birthdays, which are two weeks apart in December. I actually enjoyed my beyond meat burger platter. Way better than A&W's, although to be fair I haven't had the fast food version yet, but Brian has. And their fries were excellent too. Saturday was date night with dinner at the Yangtze Restaurant on Somerset Street and then crossing Arthur Street to Bar Robo to see the Tony D Trio. I've always wanted to see Tony D play live and this was a great chance to do that. It was intimate and we got a great table. We stayed for both sets and got home just before midnight. Not bad for an old fogey. The rocking music helped me stay awake. Sunday morning found us at the Carleton Tavern having breakfast at 9 AM. We try to see Sam the chef before Christmas and wish him and his family all the best for the holidays. Sam spoils us. You can tell he piles a lot more food on our plates than for other diners. You get that when you've patronized a place for 40 years. And finally, I venture out tonight to go see the Aquaman movie with my Jee-Riz partner Chris. I hear Amber Heard is in it.
X-23 #7 - Mariko Tamaki (writer) Diego Olortegui (pencils) Walden Wong (inks) Chris O'Halloran (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). X-Assassin part 1. You can safely jump onto this book right here with this new story. Laura and Gabby help out the NYPD with a serial murder case and the killer is something brand new. I like the connection between the assassin, X-23 and Honey Badger and the new art team did a great job so I'm going to keep reading.
Doctor Strange: The Best Defense #1 - Gerry Duggan (writer) Greg Smallwood (art) VC's Cory Petit (letters). By the Vishanti was this ever good. These Defender one-shots are thoroughly worth reading if you're a big Marvel Fan. Greg did a wonderful tribute to Steve Ditko in a two page spread and I loved his Clea. The stabby guy in the bed sheet is still killing aliens too.
The Silver Surfer: The Best Defense #1 - Jason Latour (writer & art) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). My hopes for all of the Defenders one-shots to be stellar were dashed with this one. Norrin Radd doesn't even appear until way later in the story. It starts off incomprehensibly with a bunch of aliens and ends with a lot of new age gobbledy goop that the Surfer spouts while floating in space. The crazy knife wielding Halloween ghost only shows up in two panels so that was disappointing as well. The only thing I liked was when the Surfer's board takes off eh.
Magic Order #5 - Mark Millar (writer) Olivier Coipel (art) Dave Stewart (colours) Peter Doherty (letters). This is the penultimate issue with many shocking revelations. It sets up next issue's conclusion beautifully. I can hardly wait to find out what happens.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1/LGY #241 - Saladin Ahmed (writer) Javier Garron (art) David Curiel (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Yay! This did not suck. I was so afraid that the new Miles book would not stand up to the high standard that I put on it when Brian Michael Bendis was writing his adventures. Saladin Ahmed did an excellent job here and it helped that Javier Garron's art rocked the whole issue. You get all you need to know to enjoy this Spider-Man even if you didn't read the 240 issues leading up to this. I admit I did a little eye roll when the super villain showed up but then there's a twist that made me give a cheer. I can't wait for the next issue, and that's the magic that Brian used to make that kept me reading.
The Batman Who Laughs #1 - Scott Snyder (writer) Jock (art) David Baron (colours) Sal Cipriano (letters). I was going to give this 6-issue mini a pass because I didn't like the whole Dark Nights Metal storyline but I thought I'd give Scott Snyder another chance. He presents a very different kind of dark knight that I still do not like so I won't finish reading this story either, but that's just me. If you want to see what happens when Batman gets turned into the Joker (WTF?) then you'll want to read this.
Goddess Mode #1 - Zoe Quinn (writer) Robbi Rodriguez (art) Rico Renzi (colours) Simon Bowland (letters). This new Vertigo book takes place in a very colourful future where folks live in a virtual reality because the real world sucks. Cassandra Price is a coder who works for the corporation that controls the VR. A glitch sends her into another reality and there she meets three other women and I think they go fight evil forces. This book is very bright and very tech and text heavy. I felt like I didn't get to know Cassandra very well before she gets transformed into a goddess and her situation is very confusing. This book is not to my taste unfortunately.
The Unstoppable Wasp #3/LGY #11 - Jeremy Whitley (writer) Gurihiru (art) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). A.I.M. has broken into Pym Labs to steal tech and Nadia must save her friends and keep the bad guys from getting away. These foes are quite formidable and even with the help of the original Wasp and Mockingbird, the bad guys win. I like the new A.I.M. villains and want to learn more about them.
Avengers #11/LGY #701 - Jason Aaron (writer) Ed McGuinness & Cory Smith (pencils) Mark Morales, Scott Hanna & Karl Kesel (inks/finishers) Erick Arciniega (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). It's the calm before the next storm. According to the cover Jason's other story in Thor, "The War of the Realms", will cross over into this book in 4 months. Meanwhile, T'Challa meets with some international super heroes to try and form an alliance to keep the world safe. Thor and She-Hulk go on a date and Phil Coulson explains why there's a Squadron Supreme of America. See, it's not always massive alien invasions and war with Namor.
Fantastic Four Wedding Special #1 - This lead in one-shot to Fantastic Four #650 has 3 stories.
"(Invisible) Girls Gone Wild" by Gail Simone (writer) Laura Braga (art) Jesus Aburtov (colours) & VC's Joe Caramagna (letters) is a silly bachelorette party at a strip joint with Alicia's friends and some of Sue's super powered buddies. I expected better from Gail.
"Father Figure" by Dan Slott (writer) Mark Buckingham (pencils) Mark Farmer (inks) Matt Yackey (colours) & VC's Joe Caramagna (letters) reminded me of who Alicia's step-father is. I was touched as I remembered asking Mr. Fowler for Penny's hand in marriage. I loved the job the two Marks did. I would have sworn Jack Kirby drew this.
"The Puppet Master's Lament" by Fred Hembeck (writer & art) & Megan Wilson (colours) was a monologue recap of Ben and Alicia's relationship. It was typical Fred Hembeck humour.
You really don't have to read this since there's nothing here that impacts the wedding much but it's a nice accompaniment to the big day.
Sasquatch Detective #1 - Brandee Stilwell (creator & writer). This $7.99 US 64-page special continues the beloved tradition of silly funny animal comic books that used to rule the racks. Too bad it doesn't cost 25 cents like back in the fifties. You get the origin story by Ron Randall (art) Ross Campbell (colours) & Dave Sharpe (letters). This will tell you how Tonya Mae Lightfoot from the Appalachian Mountains leaves her Sasquatch family to go to Los Angeles and join the LAPD. What follows are five short stories where Tonya solves crimes. I would not have wanted to read this big book normally, but the art throughout is really good. Thanks to Gustavo Vazques (art) & Chris Sotomayor (colours) in "Sasquatch Anniversary"; Gustavo Vazques (art) & Ross Campbell (colours) in "Unsolved Mysteries", "Neighbourhood Watch", "Arrest and Relaxation" & "Smoke and Mirrors". There are even some cameos by some DC heroes as a bonus.
Batman Annual #3 - Tom Taylor (writer) Otto Schmidt (art) A Larger World's Troy Peteri (letters). If Tom King ever leaves Batman I hope that Tom Taylor takes over the writing chores. I love when Alfred is featured but only if it's very well written and this story is very well written indeed. The relationship between Alfred and Batman/Bruce is special and this story proves just how special. If you're a Batman fan but don't normally get the annual, you have to get this one.

#Retland #Pixelart #Gamedev #32pxart #TECH ‘The Good Fight’ Review: CBS’s Compelling New Legal Drama Deserves a Bigger Platform BY ALLISON KEENE FEBRUARY 17, 2017 SHARE TWEET the-good-fight-review Before I get into the virtues of The Good Fight — of which there are many — I have to pause and discuss CBS’s strategy for releasing the show. Initially, the broadcast network wanted to debut its premium streaming service, CBS All Access, on the back of a new Star Trek series, Discovery. After that, its Good Wife spinoff series, The Good Fight, would be the next new series offered exclusively on All Access, which also hosts CBS’s entire back catalogue of programming. Unfortunately, Star Trek: Discovery was plagued with production delays, so The Good Fight was moved up. As much as I like the show and the one it spun off from, I question the thinking of putting The Good Fight on CBS All Access to begin with. The Good Wife, though critically acclaimed, had a moderate viewership at best, and it’s unlikely that those fans will clamor to pay for a new series that is for them unproven. And if the idea is that they’ll want to already want to have All Access for when Star Trek: Discovery finally launches, well, is the crossover between these two show’s fandoms really that significant? Feels like a reach. the-good-fight-images-8 Image via CBS All of this is to say that I believe, vehemently, that The Good Fight should be airing on CBS proper, and available for all to see without extra payment. It’s a fresh take on The Good Wife model, and one that puts women and minorities first. To relegate it to an online paid service feels like exactly like the kind of marginalization that this show is fighting against. As to the particulars of The Good Fight, they are thus: Good Wife staple Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) is ready to retire from the now merged firm of Lockhart, Deckler, Gussman, Lee, Lyman, Gilbert, Lurie, Kagan, Tannenbaum, and Associates, and move to the Italian countryside. But just as she’s about to sign the papers, she finds out that, in fact, she’s broke. Her money is either gone or frozen, thanks to the Madoff-esque Ponzi scheme of a close family friend, whose daughter — Diane’s goddaughter, Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie) — just started working for the firm. The first episode of The Good Fight explores the fallout from this, while also managing to sneak in a legal case. It’s what made The Good Wife so, well, good — that balance of character drama and legal drama. Both women are in downward spiral for very different reasons, but they leave the firm together for new shores, that of an (otherwise) all-black firm, one where Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo) also recently landed. There are many thematic parts to The Good Fight that feel like the show from which it came. Like Alicia Florrick (who is named but will not appear in this series), Maia is an excellent lawyer, but she’s sometimes used as a pawn because of her family’s scandal. Diane is also starting down a few pegs below were she was when she was at her own firm, though not as far down as Alicia was in Season 1 of The Good Wife when she returns to law as a junior associate. But essentially, both shows feature women at tumultuous times in their lives, being called on to be tough and move on, even when they are at the brink of personal collapse. the-good-fight-images-5 Image via CBS Though there is no Juliana Margulies, there are plenty of other familiar faces on the show that makes it feel very connected to its predecessor. In addition to Lucca and Diane, Eli’s daughter Marissa (Sarah Steele), Diane’s estranged husband Kurt (Gary Cole), her former law partner David Lee (Zach Grenier), and quirky fellow attorney Elsbeth Tasconi (Carrie Preston) make regular appearances, alongside some familiar judges and lawyers. But The Good Fight is also completely its own story, especially in the character of Maia, who is just starting out and battling an unending sea of people who hate her because of what her father did (or is accused of doing). Leslie, Baranski, and Jumbo also do an excellent job leading the series, each providing compelling performances that feel new despite their appearances on the former show. They don’t have to be likable, but they are, and exceptionally so. And while so much feels the same, stylistically, about The Good Fight, there are a few things that feels like it’s leaning into because it’s not on CBS’s regular TV schedule, like the focus on the all-black firm and three female leads (one of whom is a lesbian, one of whom is black, and one of whom is 64 years old). Perhaps this is just my cynicism about network TV and CBS’s refusal to show any diversity in its regular programming, but it does feel like the show’s creators, Robert and Michelle King, are free to tell exactly the kind of story they want to. It’s still a procedural, but it’s a damn fine one — one worth paying for CBS All Access, even though it deserves so much more. Rating: ★★★★ Very good — Women on top! The Good Fight premieres Sunday, January 19th on CBS before moving exclusively to CBS All Access. the-good-fight-images-9 Image via CBS the-good-fight-images-4 Image via CBS the-good-fight-images-3 Image via CBS the-good-fight-images-6 Image via CBS PREVIOUS ARTICLE Top 5 Matt Damon Performances: How Do You Like Them Apples?
