So I’m rewatching the 7seeds anime to pass time because I miss my babies and my brain to too fried from finals to reread the manga. The first season enraged me so much because of the pacing issues, the lack of subtlety, the bad animation, and the emotional tone feeling forced. It’s 12 episodes and ends with Hana’s supposed death (I don’t even want to talk about summer A’s backstory they butchered it so bad).
But the second season has an almost immediate jump in quality that, even after reading the manga, makes it enjoyable to watch. There’s still issues. Oh boy there are still a lot of issues. But compared to how season one packed in so much plot into such a short amount of time, the second season actually stays on one arc and puts its main focus on team summer B, which allows for some actual character development to take place.
I still feel sad watching it, because the horribly wasted potential is so depressing considering all the factors that go into why it was wasted. And so many characters never got their chance to shine cause it got cancelled. But I’m having a considerably better time watching season 2 than season 1.
I can definitely see what pulled me into my interest for these characters. Natsu and Ango specifically have gotten a lot more care as the story went on. It’s still sad to me that the show got cancelled because, after seeing this progression, there’s no more opportunity for the show to get better as the story goes on. Though I did notice some choices that make it seem like the show was planning on skipping the final arc, which would have been an awful mistake.
It’s nowhere near what Yumi Tamura deserves for the masterpiece she’s created, and it has more flaws than good points, but it’s something for what it is. If anything, I can enjoy it as the awkward and clumsy introduction that started the massive amount of love I have in my heart for this story in the first place.
And Semimaru is hilarious.
