VoicePlay Visuals - Classical Chaos (part 1/2)

(The video itself obviously isn't a two-parter, but this post is! You can go to part 2 here, and there'll also be a link at the bottom of this post.)

VoicePlay's "Classical Chaos" video publically released on the 29th of June, 2024 (well, the 28th of June for Americans I suppose, but I've been going off of my own timezone for all my other posts - no point changing now), and it features the one and only Rachel Potter, back with VoicePlay for the first time in two and a half years!

The arrangement, creative direction, and editing of this video was all Layne (with a bit of additional creative direction from Tony), and some have said this is an accurate look into what the inside of Layne's brain is like😂 Layne took snippets of a dozen different classical music pieces (ranging from "somewhat known" to "definitely well-known"), and turned them into a super original, super amazing acapella medley, and created a very entertaining and amusing video to go with it! And the video is what I'm here to talk about!

Also, if you somehow haven't figured it out yet, the Classical Chaos video is somewhat of a sequel to VoicePlay's In The Hall Of The Mountain King video they did back in September of 2022. You can find my VoicePlay Visuals post for that video here!

Anyway, enough introduction, let's get into this!

First of all, had to get a shot of that bat flying past - it's a cute touch - and second of all my goodness let's talk about set design because WOW. This is inside Pattycake Studios, believe it or not! Seriously, Mountain King I think maybe just had a handful of real trees that were dragged into the studio and then they used a hanging backdrop with a forest on it in addition? But this is heaps! (Someone in the VP Discord said apparently there were 39 trees used, damn)

This forest also did double duty, as Pattycake Productions also used it for their new Villains Lair episode, Ancient Relics (hey, might as well make the absolute most of it!), and unlike VP's video, that actually does have credits for set design! The trees themselves are credited to Orlando Art Squad, Djon Pearson, Layne, Tony, and also Big Oaks Ranch!

(Also I'm fairly certain that moon in the background is the same moon lamp/spotlight that Geoff used for his Jack's Lament video)

Eli's here! He uses the spellbook to re-summon all the others (I think), but how/why did he reappear I wonder? (Grundel magic perhaps 😝 (yeah they're playing creatures called "Grundels", I think maybe Layne came up with the name?))

I can't read sheet music to save my life, but this appears to be the sheet music for Toccata & Fugue In D Minor (it's the first piece in this medley, and I googled what the sheet music looked like and it seems to line up).

Geoff giving a little smile and wave at Eli is very cute, and reminds me of the way Kathy waved to Geoff at the end of Golden Hour, which in turn reminded some people of Rachel's little wave in the Kiss The Girl segment of the Little Mermaid Medley, another video where Geoff got painted blue, so I guess it's a full-circle moment really!

Also yes, their appearances have been tweaked slightly since Mountain King (both Geoff and Layne have different horns, Eli and Geoff have different 'shirt' things, and Geoff's skin is more blue than it was last time), but I have many other things to talk about, so I shan't spend too much time on this.

Geoff is Planning Something(tm) 😝

The fire in this video works similarly to how the cauldron did in Mountain King in regards to colour coding, but while the cauldron only appeared to change colour whenever someone added something to it, this fire changes colour whenever a different person starts singing lead vocals! E.g., white for Rachel, as shown here. (I'm not sure how tough this was to pull off in editing/post-production, but it turned out amazing!)

The queen White Witch is busy casting spells and doing witch stuff! Do not disturb and definitely do not touch the spellbook!

I don't like to fight or get competitive a lot for myself, I just brush it off and continue on with my day. But I like to do petty revenge and do it passively ✨

I'm a wary person and try to keep note of everything despite me being quite forgetful on basic stuff.

They get on really well and are super close now that they’re adults, but don’t get me wrong- They could FIGHT when they were younger. Siblings fight and that is fine. One time Cosette threw a hairbrush at Enjolras and it hit him in the face and he had a black eye for two weeks lmao. Another time they were fighting and Enjolras just grabbed a pair of scissors and just hacked a chunk of Cosette’s hair off. Valjean always tried to ground them when they fought but he was wayyy to soft on them both 

They don't know much about their mother, except that according to their Papa she loved them very much. They know less than nothing about their birth father, and they're not in the least bit interested. Their papa is their father.

One time Enjolras was at an event for the ABC, and he came across a man called Felix Tholomyes. He seemed really familiar, Combeferre and Courfeyrac said the same. He showed Cosette a photo later that day. And yeah, she thought the same. Kind of weird.

Cosette moving abroad for a while, for Erasmus or something like that, (I'm thinking Berlin) and a few months after she leaves Enjolras books flights to come visit because she's been badgering him basically since she got there and ok, maybe he misses her kind of a lot

so he books his flights and they're both like AAAAHHHH and closer to the time Cosette starts sending him messages like AHHH ONLY FORTY DAYS TO GOOOO. AAAAHHH ONLY THIRTY NINE DAYS TO GOOOOO. AHHHH ONLY THIRTY EIGH- “Stop texting me or I’m gonna block your number” 

So Enj flies out and for the next week the two of them hang out in the city and go to all the history museums and the lakes and hang out with Cosette’s friends from her accommodation and classes (”Cosette you didn’t tell us how hot your brother is” “Gross”) and go to different cool bars and clubs Cosette has found and Enjolras tries not to glare too severely at the weird kid Marius who is following Cosette around like a lovesick puppy and in exchange Cosette does not say anything when Enjolras hooks up with that one guy from her art history class even though she REALLY wants to bc she’s nosy af

Enjolras won’t admit it, but when he gets home, he counts the days until Cosette is back

They don’t live together, but they hang out at least once a week. Normally they go round to one of their apartments for dinner (take out, because neither of them can cook to save their life) They eat on the couch with some show on in the background and talk about their papa and their friends and the ABC and other stuff. Sometimes they’ll do facemasks or paint each other’s nails. They’re fucking cute.

EDITING BOOTCAMP: WARWICKROYALS EDITING PROCESS

So, about five hundred years ago (or somewhere in that ballpark), an anon kindly asked me to share my editing process. It's been a long time coming because I've recently stopped using Pixlr (a free online photo editing program) and have moved on to 2020 Photoshop. I really recommend using Photoshop, it might be confusing or overwhelming at first, but I think it's worth it and ultimately it cuts your editing time in half once you get the hang of things. However, you can still use this tutorial if you're using GIMP, PIXLR, or whatever else. So, let's get into it (YUH)!

STEP 1 | ASPECT RATIO & SIZING

Alrighty, so what we have here is what I call a "raw screenshot." After playing around with multiple versions of ReShade and countless presets, I have come to the conclusion that I hate it. It makes my game slower, switching between filters is a pain and they just get in the way. But this is just my opinion, there are some very pretty ReShade filters out there, I just don't think they're necessary for a pretty screenshot.

When I load up my screenshots they are almost totally vanilla. I do use Luumia's NoGlo and NoBlu mods, but that's about it. I do not resize my screenshots at all, they are 1600x900 by default. However, one of the first things I do is add an aspect ratio (those two black bars you see at the top and bottom of the image) to give it a more "cinematic" feel.

I do this by adding a background layer and resizing the width from 900 to 1020. With the untouched screenshot in the centre, there should be two bars above and beneath it that are 60 px wide. I then colour the background layer black with the paint bucket tool. BOOM. Aspect ratio. Technically my edited posts are 1600x1020 when edited, but the screenshot remains 1600x900.

STEP 2 | PSD/PHOTOSHOP ACTIONS

The next step is for me to add my PSD. Think of it as your own personalized filter that changes how your screenshots will look. What your PSD does to your images is really just based on personal taste. For me, I love a rich screenshot with lots of contrast and strong blacks and more dramatic shadows. So, that's what my PSD does!

Your own PSD might look totally different for you. Maybe you what a lot of brightness, with warmer undertones, and lots of bloom. It's totally up to you! I recommend you play around with Photoshop's setting until you find an aesthetic that suits your own taste.

You can also download some Sims 4 PSDs and Photoshop actions from other creators. I really recommend those from @/intravertt here on Tumblr. They make ReShade presets, PSDs, and have a variety of other resources that are stunning.

Here's what my PSD looks like.

STEP 3 | SHADOWS AND HIGHLIGHTS, BRIGHTNESS, AND SHARPNESS

After adding my PSD I do some further edits to change how my screenshot looks. Because the shadows are so overwhelming, I add some highlights and might tweak with the exposure just to make sure nothing is too dark/under-exposed. I sometimes draw in some light shadows, but this is quite time-consuming so I don't most of the time. I also add a bit of sharpness to make certain details stick out some more. If the screenshot is taken outside, I will add some vibrance just to regain some warmth and make it look like my characters are in the sun.

Like PSD what you chose to edit, and how, it 100% up to you and what you what to achieve from your screenshots. I again recommend playing around with different settings to find something that works for you.

STEP 4 | ADDING TEXT

I recommend a text size of at least 35 pt. My texts are also bolded, outlined, and have a drop shadow, just so that it's easier to read for some people. Text tends to blend into the background and it's super annoying, so those elements help a lot. I also recommend using a sans serif font (ironic, I know, but I'm using a serif font exclusively for this arc for a reason, I swear). Also, make sure that the spacing is all good so the text isn't jumbled or crammed together. If your posts are word-y like mine (lol) you might feel the need to lower the spacing, just don't go crazy with it.

My text is centre justified. I write the name of the character who is speaking only once before their first line [LIKE THIS]. I start a new paragraph each time a new character starts speaking. To tell characters apart I assign different colours to each character, based on the order they are speaking in. The first character to speak is white, the second is yellow, the third is blue, etc. I recommend having some colour variation between characters' dialogue. Even if you have the name of who is speaking before each line, text of the same colour blends together easily.

Fun fact, I also often don't close off my paragraphs with a period or any punctuation (unless it's an exclamation point). Screw grammar, I just prefer it that way.

STEP 5 | BLUR/OVERLAYS/FINISHING TOUCHES

Adding blur to my posts is something I've just started doing at I don't know why. It's a great way to focus on certain objects/people and put things into perspective! It doesn't have to be a lot, but it does wonders. I just use a brush tool to go over the areas I want blurred. However, there are other faster ways to do this for sure such as cutting out and blurring the area you want out of focus separately.

If there are any clipping issues, like skin poking through clothing, I will go in with a tiny brush tool and paint over the skin with the same colour as the clothing's fabric. Sim's joints always look strange and jagged when bent (like the skin clips around a sim's bent elbow or leg, so annoying) so I'll often go in with the smudge tool with very little strength/hardness in order to remove that

Sometimes my posts have lens flares or little dust particles. These are just simple overlays I add with a layer mask + reduced opacity. You can find overlays like that easily online and maybe I'll make a post about how exactly I use them but we're DONE 'N' DUSTED for now. I hope this tutorial is useful for someone. This was fun! I'm totally down to do more in the future.

"HAHA! I GOTCHU NOW LOSER!" Y/N smashed the buttons on her controller, basically on the edge of her bed. A grunt was heard through her headphones, then a loud bang with laughing in the background. Y/N felt her stomach turn at the sound of this, feeling a little left out, but smiled nonetheless.

"HOW'D YOU EVEN DO THAT?!! YOU’RE DOING SOME HACKING MY GUY!" Denki yelled through the laughing in the background, hands pulling at his hair. He seriously couldn't believe it!

"I'm not! I just wanted to show Sero I'm way better at this game than you are. And turns out I am!" Y/N let out a loud laugh, falling backwards onto her pillow. After finding out that 'Tape Dispenser' went to her cousin’s school by hearing his voice in the back of Denki's room, she got to learn more about this Sero dude. She already knew this after their last game a few nights ago, but he was so chill. It was still insane for her to find out that her cousin and online friend went to the same hero school. The coincidences in this world. Y/N thought as she grinned.

"It's okay Kaminari, you still lasted a long time! But you did get brutally beat by Y/N at the end though..." Sero said, trying to raise Denki's low spirits, but only succeeded in making him more miserable. Rustling was heard through Y/N's headphones, making it obvious that there was movement happening.

"You don't understand Sero! THIS IS THE ONLY GAME I COULD FULLY BEAT THIS GIRL IN!" Denki shook Sero by the shoulders, quickly doing the action. Cackling was heard through the speakers while the girl wiped a tear from her eye. Sero laughed along, as he was pushed to the ground by Denki. His arms were crossed as he looked away, upset that Y/N managed to finally beat him in every game they played.

"It's okay Denki, not everyone can be as good as me!" Y/N exclaimed, getting up from her bed to start taping specific parts of her room. Kaminari continued to complain about his defeat to Sero, who only chuckled in response. As she finished taping the bottom of the walls, Y/N sat back on her bed, sighing in content.

"So, how are you? I'm doing terribly after being utterly destroyed by you, by the way." Said Kaminari, opening his water bottle and taking large gulps from it. Y/N felt her face light up as she remembered to tell Kaminari of her future activity.

"Bro, you won't believe this! So, basically, they're actually letting me paint my room! All by myself! How fricking cool is that?!" The girl laughed out loud, jumping on her bed in excitement. Kaminari's eyes widen, in surprise and slight fear, sitting up and taking in the new information.

"Wait, really? But isn't that like extremely dangerous? Cuz of the chemicals and what not??" He tried his best to keep his voice leveled, not noticing Sero look at him weirdly. That guy had no idea what was happening.

"Well, they said that they were gonna do something to the paint so it won't hurt me or anything, I don't know what, but-" Y/N was cut off by an extremely confused Sero. "Wait wait wait, hold on. I don't understand what's happening. How can paint harm you? Besides like...eating it. And what do you mean by 'finally getting to paint your room?’ Silence was the only answer he got. Sero gulped in embarrassment, thinking he asked a really personal question.

"Um, it's nothing du-" A loud 'shhhhhhh' was heard from Y/N, who let out a shaky breath. She never really told anyone, it's not like she could either way, being confined in the hospital room for a long time. She pushed a loose strand of her away from her face, preparing herself to tell Sero.

"Well, the reason is because I basically live in a hospital. I can't go outside, or have 'unpurified' air, as the doctors like to say, meaning my interactions with people and the outside world are extremely limited. That means anything that's not cleared of dust and germs, I guess, can be extremely harmful for me? As pathetic as it sounds, it could actually kill me, haha." It was quiet as Sero took in the information, a large wave of emotions crashing on him. A person shouldn't have to be locked in a room for the rest of their life. Especially someone who is such a sweet person like Y/N.

"I-I'm so sorry to hear that Y/N. If you don't mind me asking, how...how long have you been in the hospital?" The young girl answered with a quick 'Two years', and that's when Sero felt his stomach twist uncomfortably. Kaminari abruptly got up and headed towards his door.

"I'm gonna get something to eat, you want something dude?" Kaminari's voice was low and trembling. It didn't take a genius to see that the blonde haired boy needed some time alone. "No thanks." Kaminari let out a hum, quickly exiting his room and closing the door shut. Sero heard the loud sniffs that slowly faded away, as he hung his head down.

"Hey, you good Sero? That was probably a lot to take in, sorry." Sero shook his head, letting a sad smile adorn his face. "It's fine, really. I actually feel honored that you're comfortable telling me. Feels like we're getting closer, to be honest." He smiled happily, meaning every word he said. And Y/N knew that. "Ha, we are though!" The air was tense, despite the two teenagers being in different rooms.

Y/N went to clear her throat, but was interrupted when a light knock echoed throughout her room. "Someone there?" Sero asked, noticing her silence and hearing the very faint knocking.

"Yeah, um Sero, I'll call you guys later, my doctor wants to talk." Y/N quickly replied, seeing Receen open the door and walk in with his thin suit on. Sero let out an ok and they hang up. Y/N finally took in how the doctor looked, noticeable eye bags under his blue-grey eyes, from lack of sleep. His dark hair slightly tousled, probably from putting on the protective helmet that came with the suit, and a small smile on his welcoming face. And a large container of paint in his left hand. Her eyes immediately lit up.

"What’s up doc? I see you have something in your hand, can I see it closer?" The small girl asked, getting up and making a grabbing motion with her hands. Receen chuckled, lifting up the paint for Y/N to see. Even if he were to hand her the container, she wouldn't be able to hold. She was just too weak. Said girl let out a high pitch 'OOOO ' in excitement.

"I'm not sure if you wanted more, but we managed to get you your favorite color! This should be enough to paint the room, you can even put a second layer if you want." Receen walked over to where Y/N put all the equipment, opening the container of paint. And with a low grunt from him, the lid was opened. Y/N watched with amazement as the doctor poured the soft looking paint into a tray. She picked up a roller near her, and drowned the roller in paint, the white fluff getting covered in color.

The two began painting, Y/N's hand shaking every now and then. After painting half the room, they sat in silence, resting for a while. Receen seemed to be tense, though Y/N didn't seem to notice since she was too happy to speak. Receen let out a breath, breaking the silence, causing Y/N to look towards him.

"I didn't get to ask you how you were, did I Y/N? How are you?" Said girl let a beaming smile spread on her face, causing Receen to slightly squint his eyes from the intensity of her smile. "Honestly, I haven't felt this happy in a very long time! I actually still can't believe you guys really let me do this! Thank you so much!"

Receen gave her a small smile while rubbing the back of his neck. "It's not a problem, you could��ve asked sooner and gotten this done a long time ago. You've been here for two years, so please don't be afraid of asking for things!" At the mention of her time spent in the hospital, Y/N lowered her head, causing Receen to wince. Well, might as well tell her. The doctor cleared his throat and began to talk.

"Y/N, as you are aware, I, along with many other doctors and scientists, have been working hard for you to be able to go outside again. To see your family, hug them, be a normal kid again." There was a pause and that alone caught Y/N's attention. She looked up at him. "There is a way for you to finally do that, Y/N."

Shock evident on the girl's face, she abruptly stood up and faced the doctor. There was absolutely no way anyone could have found a cure for someone like her. Someone who had an incurable sickness. Someone who was too sick, to even have medicine. He's lying. Y/N narrowed her eyes at the grown man sitting in front of her.

"With all due respect Doctor, I highly doubt that ​​that's possible. Cuz, y'know? I basically have an incurable disease? I mean, like, even if you did manage to find a way for me to leave this place, how do you even know it's gonna work? I don't think you've tried this medicine since no one in recorded hospital documents in the past have had people like that checked in before-"

"How do you even know that?"

"-so how do you truly know it'll work?" Y/N quickly finished, completely ignoring his statement. Receen sighed, scratching his head. "We live in a world where quirks exist. Would you believe me if I told you centuries ago that the human race would evolve to have super powers? It's kind of like that, but not really." Y/N eyed him suspiciously. He's avoiding the question.

Receen looked straight at the girl standing in front of him. He felt slightly intimidated by her piercing gaze. He quickly looked away and got up, towering over Y/N's small frame. Then he smiled. "Y/N, you are a very sweet girl, no doubt about it. I know how much you want to get out of here, and I want to help you. My team has created this almost perfect pill, especially suited for your sickness. I know you're very cautious, just like your mother, but I can only reassure you, that these are your ticket out of here." He pulled out the bottle from his protective suit, shaking it in front of [Y/N].

Her eyes widened as she restrained herself from reaching out and snatching the bottle. Her eyes slightly narrowed as she pulled herself together. Crossing her arms and slightly tilting her upwards, she looked into the doctor's bright eyes. "There's always a catch when it comes to these kinds of things. What's the price if I take these? My lifespan shortens, I only have five hours to go outside, it drugs me or something?"

"I'm hurt you think I would just give you these without setting out the consequences." There was a slight glint in his eyes before it quickly disappeared. Y/N hummed, urging the doctor to continue.

"There are exactly 15 pills in here. And consuming just one of these bad boys right here, would allow you to go outside! Though, time is very important when taking these. You'd have 10 hours before the pills effects wear off. These would dull your hypersensitive senses, but not to a point where you can't feel, smell or do anything. No no, it'd just be like how you were before. You'd feel slightly dizzy and be a little itchy, but besides that, nothing too extreme. It just dulls all your body senses down." Receen gave Y/N a small smile. She looked a little weary, unsure if what he said was true. She looked at the bottle then back to Doctor Receen, fingers twitching every now and then. Breathing in and letting it out slowly, Y/N stared straight into the doctor's eyes.

If I take these, I can finally go out. I can hug mom and dad, I can be around Denki again. I can meet Sero face to face and feel the grass again! I can be... happy again. But if these don't actually work, I'd immediately die on the spot. I'd be able to go outside though. Aah, so much going outside, I can meet new people! I don't wanna spend the rest of my days slowly rotting away in here anyway.

"So Y/N, are you going to take them or let all our time go to waste?"

Sero looked at his hands solemnly, thinking about what Y/N had told him. He swallowed the lump forming in his throat, then lightly slapped his cheeks to stop the wave of emotions from spilling out.

"Yo, you good dude? It's not everyday I see someone willingly slapping themselves." Kaminari chuckled, walking in and closing the door with his foot as he carried a soda bottle and a bag of chips towards the boy sitting on his bed. Sero grinned, feeling the sadness of everything wash away.

"Yeah, I'm perfectly fine. But what about you though? After we had that conversation, you were, well, umm... kind of out of it." Kaminari froze, letting a dejected smile appear on his face. Dragging a hand down his face, he let out a sorrowful laugh.

"She's my best friend. My first real, true friend. She's basically my sister at this point. So when she collapsed that day, I felt my whole world crashing down. She is the sweetest, the most kindest, person I have ever met. She never let me degrade myself, alway cheered me up when people called me stupid." Kaminari rubbed his eyes, opening the bag of chips and plopping one of them into his mouth.

"It hasn't been the same ever since she left, her parents barely come over anymore, and they're always so sad whenever I see them. My own parents aren't the same either, they treated her like their own daughter. I can't even begin to imagine how Y/N feels about this all. She was the top in our grade, highest scores in our test. No one could compare to her. M-my heart breaks for her. She lost everything." Sero let that information sink in, thinking about how she was before. He smiled as he saw Kaminari's shoulders begin to shake. He cares so much for her.

He put his hand on his shoulder, watching Kaminari slowly lift his face towards him. "Come here you emotional ball of feelings." Being the friendly guy he is, Sero gave the sobbing boy a hug, cuz hugs fix everything.

"No homo though bro." And with that, they both laughed out loud, continuing their bro day.

Don't worry I know what you mean! So I got two of them, because I vastly underestimated just how long they were going to take. I got two like large ones, I think they're called, because I was like these will be easy peasy. FALSE. I'm super happy with how detailed they are, but damn are they gonna take a while. I'm so excited to watch it like come together you know? Anyway, like I said I got two: one is of The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, because honestly that's probably my favorite painting ever and I'm going to frame it when I'm done and hang it in my room; the second is called Soulmates, which I'm not sure if it's based on a painting (at least not anything I could find when I googled) and I got that one because it's a beautiful mix of blues and purples and pinks and I wanna hang it in my living room.

Let me just put a disclaimer and say I'm FAIRLY certain I got tickets. I bought them through Vividseats, because thats where I bought my 2020 tickets and so I had credits to use. But because it's a third party site I don't technically have the tickets yet? I just have a confirmed order and I'm supposed to get them by 11/22 and so I'm like super hesitant to say I'm going because knowing my luck something stupid is going to happen and I won't get them lmao. But my best friend is aware of this and she agrees irs probably best to wait until after I get the tickets delivered for us to book flights and a place to stay. It's also good for us because it'll give us time to assess weather and holiday traffic since we have to fly and making sure we give ourselves time to get out there and back. But I'm really hoping everything goes well and that we get to go! I think we'll have a blast! And I just got my army bomb because I wanted to put it out as decoration (LMAO) and now I get to actually use it at the concert!

It's almost Halloween!!!! I've had this picture in mind the entire month but I only just now got it done rip. At any rate it's here now at least!

I figured Mac and Jack, especially Jack "Halloween is my favorite holiday" Dalton, would get super into family Halloween costumes once Brady came into the picture, and this first year is no exception. Brady had been obsessed with the Nightmare Before Christmas for a long time even before October, so it was an obvious choice for Mac to suggest Jack, Sally and Zero as costumes for the three. And I think they really work it well! They definitely get a lot of compliments on their costumes from the families around the neighborhood. (And don't worry, there's still a haunted house at the now Macgyver-Dalton residence! Bozer, Riley, Sam and Desi are running it while the guys are trick or treating.) All in all they have a very successful Halloween!

Brady nodded minutely as his Uncle Bozer lifted the brush from his skin, then obediently held still. Riley chuckled from where she was hanging up a few more decorative cobwebs in the hall.

"Ya know, I didn't think I'd see the day when a Macgyver actually held still for someone, let alone a small one" she commented as she finished, turning around. "I'm pretty sure you're a blonde genius whisperer Boze."

Boze grinned as he put the makeup away, finished with the 6 year old's face paint. "What can I say, I've had years of practice."

"Hey now!" Called a voice from the hall. "We can hold still if we need to.... We just don't like to."

Brady whipped his head around with a brilliant smile. "Daddy! Uncle Bozer finished my makeup, doesn't it look great?!"

The older Macgyver smiled at his son, the painted-on stitches only widening his smile. "It does! Bozer did a great job, just like always." The man in question preened a bit at that comment.

Brady scrambled from his seat, running over to his father. "You look great too Daddy! You look just like Miss Sally!"

Mac laughed. "Well thank you, we did our best. Your Zero costume is pretty good too ya know." The child giggled at his father's praise. Just then a booming laugh came from the direction of the bedroom.

"BEHOLD! THE PUMPKIN KING HAS ARRIVED!!! HALLOWEEN MAY NOW COMMENCE!!!!!" A man in a pinstriped suit, face painted like a skeleton, emerged from the doorway with a twisted snarl on his face. He looked every bit a menacing skeleton king, ready to scare children and adults alike.

Brady giggled and sprinted over to his other father. "Papa you're so silly!" He called as he reached the man's feet. Jack mocked a look of outrage even as he picked up his young son.

"Silly?! I'm Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King! Pumpkin Kings are NOT silly! They're terrifying, striking fear into the hearts of children everywhere!" He punctuated the final statement with a playful jab at Brady's stomach, which only made the child laugh harder.

Mac joined his kid in laughter as he approached the two. "Not if youre the one playing them, Jack, sorry to disappoint you." He put an arm around the other man's waist and snuggled into his side, putting the other hand on Brady's knee. "That's ok, I like my Jack's a bit on the silly side."

Jack looked at him with a sappy smile. "Well. Maybe it's not so bad then." He leaned over and placed a quick kiss on his husband's smiling lips, much to Brady's ire.

"Aunt Riley save me! Daddy and Papa are being sappy again!!" Riley cackled at that comment.

Mac grinned wickedly. "Oh ARE we? I guess we'll just have to stop that and instead become.... tICKLE MONSTERS!!!" And the two men descended on the squealing child in their arms while the other members of their little found family laughed in the background.

"You need to work on your lighting"

I admit that normally I don't like to nitpick Dobson's art-- a lot of his stuff is pretty self-evidently unappealing, but when he puts out a piece that he clearly did work on it seems kind of counterproductive to dismiss that he put effort into something and just zero in on the foibles. It only supports his thesis that his trolls look for the most outlandish or nitpicky details and don't deliver 'constructive criticism'. He wouldn't be wrong in this, either; callouts about minutiae really come across as petty.

For instance, I'm seeing (elsewhere) a lot of discussion about his Samus Breaks the Noob Tube fanart focusing on things like her specific armor design (implying he traced it from screencapped footage from Super Smash Bros.) to the fact that her pinky appears broken. These are possible issues, but they're honestly pretty insignificant, especially when 'broken pinky' keeps coming up as the main complaint. (Admittedly, the pinky is probably broken, but the hand's position is still easily readable and I'm not going to crucify him over a digit you can barely see.)

No, I'm going to crucify him over the lighting.

As I said this isn't normally something I would bring up, but it's specifically because of the Lapidot magazine and his response to somebody telling him "[his] lighting needs work"-- he went off on a multi-paragraph screed about how advice isn't appreciated, especially after a work is already done and he's never going to address it again. Because apparently he doesn't understand that you can learn from something you did in a previous work and apply the advice to the future.

I mean apparently he can't. For reference, this is the picture:

At a glance it's pretty impressive, especially for what Dobson's been churning out recently, but something has bothered me about it since I first saw it posted (and no, it's not the pinky). What's the problem?

The lighting.

Specifically, there is no lighting.

The background is the same value as Samus. Samus' shading is almost nonexistent. This might be fine given the underwater setting, except that she has a caustic effect (the water-ripple) applied to her, meaning that there should be a strong enough source of light to provide some kind of directional lighting. The caustics are coming from multiple directions -- somewhere above,and the backs of her arms and legs -- which doesn't make any sense because the caustic effect is a result of light filtering through the surface of the water-- even if there were lights originating from either side of the tube, they would not  be casting caustics.

I could go into detail about why the shadows don't work properly, either, but suffice to say that they are flat-- both on Samus and on most of the environment. This is the predominant issue with the picture as a whole-- Dobson drew the lineart (which is itself solid, although in desperate want of varying line weight), slapped a few solid colors, made a cursory attempt at shading, and then threw on the caustics filter to mask how otherwise simplistic his work was.

This causes the entire picture to feel like it's just on a flat plane-- Samus is at the same depth as all of the glass shards, which are at the same depth as the tube in the back, which are at the same depth as the tube in the front (and I admit, not being at all familiar with Super Metroid, I didn't realize this was supposed to be the opposite end of the tube until I watched a quick playthrough to get context of what he was drawing. Also yes I did research for this); the glass fragments are almost monotonous so it just looks like it's on the same plane as the rest of them. The background is the worst offender, being a pale blue (which... also somehow has caustics across the entire length of the wall?). If you're at all familiar with the density of water, it gets dark further down, and as I understand it the tube is fairly deep underwater, in a subterranean cavern-- the tubes might be casting light, which would illuminate Samus, but the background should be dark and vague (which would help her pop from the background instead of just being absorbed by it).

There's also an issue that water is a physical presence, and if there's a strong lighting coming from somewhere (especially at this apparent depth) it should be holding shadows. Samus, despite the bubbles around her (none of which, I now notice, are coming from the tubes themselves? Seems like that's where most of the air should be), appears to be hanging suspended in air, not drifting through water.

To wit, I spent a few minutes in Paint Tool SAI playing with values and plopping in some (very loose) shadows.

I gave myself five minutes to do this. It's not ideal (the poor placement of caustics and shadows made it difficult to determine which direction to cast Samus' shadow in-- I defaulted to backlighting, given how the caustics fall), but I think it's a reasonable illustration for the difference that can be made just by taking the lighting into account.

Disney Movie Marathon #48 Bolt (2008)

I've never seen this movie. I'm not even sure what even happens in it aside from acting dog thinks he's an actual super hero dog but gets lost in the city or something, and there's a cat and hamster. I remember on Disney Channel one of the selling points of this movie was the main girl is voiced by Miley Cyrus.

Story: Not me cryin at Bolt willing to stay behind in a burning building with Penny because he loves her more than anything. Okay but this movie was one of the better ones I've seen since Treasure Planet. It's not on Treasure Planet's level but I think Disney is starting to get the hang of their storytelling together again. The opening action sequence went on a little longer than it really needed to. I get they had to sell how "dangerous" this world is supposed to be for Bolt and Penny but that would have come across just the same in half the time. It's a silly motive for sure but I do like after we see that it's all for TV how the crew hides around this fact. When the plot actually gets going of Bolt trying to find his way back and the realization he's not a super dog is pretty good. Predictable at moments but it was fun which is all I can really ask for. The amount of screen time used for the pigeon gags could have been cut in half though

Characters: I don't really care for the human characters since they're just kinda there. That agent dude is a dick just for the sake of it. Penny barely gets by on having me care but all my care has gone to Bolt, Mittens, and Rhino. These past movies have made me expecting the worst that when I actually enjoyed the dynamic of these characters I was so happy. Rhino was purely there for comedy but I saw him as the child super fan traveling with his literal hero so it made sense to me. I like how Bolt starts out talking like cliche hero dialogue and his slow progression to acting like a normal dog with the help from Mittens. I really liked the trio of animals

Art/Animation: Still a bit eh on the facial rigs but! Their animation is getting much better and I like how they made the backgrounds look more painterly than try to render them in engine. Sometimes I was like oh yup that's straight up looking at a painting on a wall not at a distance but usually the painterly stuff worked well. I wish Disney tried to do more of that

Songs: The songs are fine. I knew the fact that they had Miley in this she would end up singing a song in the credits. Generic soundtrack but I enjoyed the movie so it didn't get dragged by it
