Okay some OddTube lore for @jayzhine and anyone else interested :) Back when OddTube first premiered on the PBS Kids Youtube channel in 2016 (good gravy where has the time gone??), people were able to leave questions in the comments section, and Olympia would leave a message in a pinned comment on the next video that answered some questions that people left from the last video. I left a question on Oona Fills In, and Olympia replied back in the next video, Otis Fills In. I freaked out about it bc it was the only question I ever sent through OddTube and I got a reply! And it was a reply on my personal favorite episode (c’mon we got to see Otis dance hahaha). Sadly, as we all know now, YouTube disabled comments on kids content a few years ago so all the comments left on OddTube have disappeared. Sadly, at the time I didn’t think to screenshot any of Olympia’s messages so those are gone :( However, I do have a copy of my message saved thanks to Google Plus (ironic considering that that also disappeared). Basically, I was part of the Odd Squad Fan Club (hey if anyone was in there please say hi :) ), and one of the mods posted Olympia’s answer to my question. Here is a screenshot of my email notification of it (yeah I dug through my emails haha). I believe my question was something along the lines of “Do you and Oona hang out outside of work?” The crossed out part is my name haha. But yeah that was definitely like the best thing that happened to me that year 😆
#I still can’t believe that I got an answer from olympia#I was like a senior in high school#but it was literally the best thing that happened to me that year haha#but yeah there is some oddtube lore for you guys :)#also! did you know you can call odd squad using olive’s number??#idk if it works outside of the us though#oddtube#odd squad#odd squad pbs kids#olympia#oona#otis#otis fills in#odd squad season 2#about me#personal#rambles in the palace#I got a reply from olympia!#olympia’s message#oddtube lore

Centerfold 5- Waiting For You
Centerfold Masterlist
Author’s Note: Written for Meghan who requested some fluffy A/B/O smut and then I came up with an idea and ran with it. Smut will start after the plot is established. Also, this is gonna go toward my @spnabobingo squares. This chapter fills my Motor Oil/Cut Grass/Gunpowder square and is rated T for Teen.
Summary: Dean heads to Vegas with Sam to crash the AVN Awards in the hopes of meeting up with Taffy Rose.
Pairing: Alpha!Dean x Reader
Word count: 2069
Story Warnings: A/B/O dynamics, pornography, mentions of multiple partners, Sam being a bit of a creeper asshole
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dean was sure it was a bad idea. There were a thousand ways it could go bad, taking his soulless little brother on a trip to Vegas. But Lisa was pretty much done with him, hadn't answered the phone since he was a vampire, Sam's loss of soul was stressing him out, and he needed a break. The fact that the AVN Awards were going to be taking place the next day was a coincidence...mostly.
"So, you're taking your soulless brother to Vegas to chase down some porn star?" Sam asked, amused. "I can think of a dozen reasons why this would be a bad idea."
Dean sighed. "Yeah. Well, we're going because Vegas is tradition, soul or no soul, and Taffy isn't just 'some porn star'. Jenna Jameson is 'some porn star'. Lisa Ann is 'some porn star'. Taffy Rose is the woman of my dreams and the future mother of my children, okay? She just doesn't know it yet. When I find her and remind her who I am, she's gonna be mine."
"Yeah. 'Cause all the porn stars wanna settle down and have a bunch of pups with some hunter they knew for a week of high school in 1996."
"'95, Sammy, and she's gonna remember me. No way I'm the only one who remembers that." Dean sighed heavily and shook his head. "I mean, I was her first! No way she forgot about me."
Sam just shrugged and pulled out his phone to distract himself. Porn awards could be fun. He could find some willing woman to sink into. It'd been a few days since he got laid, he was itching for some relief. Some tiny thing with giant fake tits would be perfect. And if there was an entire category of omega actors, maybe he could find a nice omega to fuck.
Dean got two rooms when they got the motel. He was confident he wouldn't want anything to do with whatever Sam picked up at the AVN Awards and he didn't want Sam interrupting when he managed to get Taffy, Y/n, back to his room.
Dean had trouble choosing what to wear. Plaid seemed too hunter, too redneck, too Kansas to approach a Cali-based porn star at an awards show. His FBI suits and his old Homeland Security suit both seemed to strangle him with formality. The Pink Floyd concert tee was too casual. All of his tees were. It took a while but eventually he settled on his best jeans, the ones that made his ass look awesome, and his light grey Henley. Nothing that said he was trying too hard, but also not something that made him look like a lumberjack sans the beard.
Sam was already in the Impala by the time Dean left his room. Sam was in a dark red v-neck shirt and jeans and had obviously not agonized over his wardrobe. "Took you long enough, Dean. What, were you rubbing one out so you'd last longer than five seconds when you meet up with her?"
"No!" Dean exclaimed, but he couldn't help but think that was a missed opportunity. "Shut up. Let's go."
They talked their way in, it was second nature to lie to get into places they weren’t supposed to be, and the guard really had no problem believing that the two imposing alphas were bodyguards for some of the actors.
“All right. Let’s split up. If you find Taffy, call me...then, ya know...have at it,” Dean said, gesturing to the right side of the theater before taking off to the left.
Sam rolled his eyes and walked away into the theater. There were hundreds of attractive actors mulling around and they were all wearing various revealing, shiny outfits...all of whom Sam would be willing to nail. He stopped a particularly busty redhead and smiled. “Have you seen Taffy Rose? I’m supposed to deliver a message.”
The redhead looked him up and down like she wanted to eat him and licked her lips. “Taffy’s on the mezzanine with the other omegas. They won’t let an alpha through the door. I could go get her for you,” she offered, her voice seductive.
“That would be great, actually.” Sam let his eyes run down her body. “But don’t stray too far.”
She bit her lip as she walked away on six inch high heels. She was hot as fuck, her dress tight and riding up as she walked. Sam could definitely see her wrapped around his cock. She would be fun to play with. She would be more than satisfying. She would be-
Sam’s jaw dropped a little as a small woman in a light pink crossover dress with a pink plaid skirt walked out. She had nude colored Mary Jane shoes on, natural tits...and looked so completely out of place surrounded by half-dressed, silicone-filled women that it was like a beacon of light shined on her. Sam wanted her. Dean would forgive him for having a little fun before he delivered her to him, right? And if not, Sam didn’t care.
“Hi, Sunny said you had a message for me?” she said, approaching him. Sam loved the size difference between them. Even in heels, he eclipsed her.
“Taffy, right?” Sam asked, stepping closer. He’d seen the pictures, he knew exactly who she was, but he wanted to talk to her longer, get a bit more time to scent her. She was something floral and pretty.
“Yes? Can I help you?”
Sam stepped closer again and she cleared her throat. “You don’t remember me. You shouldn’t. I was, what, twelve when we met.”
“We’ve met?” she squeaked. She swallowed and took a step back. Sam could smell arousal leaking into her scent and he smirked. She was so easy. Dripping slick already. This is what an omega gets for staying unmated so long.
“Yeah. Back in Olympia. Seems like a million years ago, Y/n.” Sam stepped closer again and Y/n gasped as she backed away and her back hit the wall behind her. “Neither of us were presented back then. I didn’t realize how good you smell.”
“S-sorry, I...who are you?”
“Always knew you were pretty, though.”
She took a deep breath and put her hand on his chest, lightly pushing him away. “I don’t recognize you and you’re making me uncomfortable so if you don’t back up and say what you came to say, I’m gonna have to-”
“Sam, you soulless bastard, get away from her!” Sam rolled his eyes at his brother’s voice and stepped back as Dean ran up. “I told you to call me if you found her, dammit!”
Sam shrugged. “She’s hot. Had to try it.”
“Go...away,” Dean growled and Y/n shivered. He watched his brother’s large frame disappear into the crowd before he turned to the omega, his omega. “Taffy, sorry about him. He’s...got some issues right now. Mental...issues. Um...I…” His words faltered as he looked into her eyes. She was right there in front of him. “Y/n,” he whispered and she gasped.
She took a deep breath and stepped close. “Dean?”
“You remember,” he whispered, taking his own deep breath of her floral scent. There was a tinge of arousal to it and he almost whimpered.
“Of course I remember. I’ve been waiting to smell that special blend of motor oil and fresh cut grass and…” She leaned up and groaned as she sniffed at his neck. “...burning gunpowder. I’ve been waiting for you for half my life.”
“That’s what I smell like to you?” Dean asked, smiling. “And you know what burning gunpowder smells like?”
She licked her lips and let out a small giggle. “I got shot...in one of my films. They shot a blank at me, I recognized the smell immediately...so I started to hang out at the range every once in a while.”
He smiled proudly. His omega liked guns. Awesome. “I saw you in last August’s Playboy. I never thought I’d see you again and...there you were in the centerfold, lookin’ so much hotter than you did in high school. But somehow just the same. You looked, you look amazing. So beautiful and...somehow innocent.”
“I’m very good at that. It’s my signature look.”
“I don’t know how you pull it off, buck naked, but you do.”
“So...um...I…” She looked away, trying to clear her mind. “So...You saw my Playboy and had to come find me?”
Dean licked his lips and stepped closer. He wanted to touch her, grab her waist and pull her against his body, but he didn’t. Not until she was ready. “I saw your Playboy and I went home and watched every clip of every video I could find with your name. ‘Taffy Rose’, huh?”
“Well, I really like pink. Taffy, rose, they’re shades of pink.”
“I remember. I see you still favor pink clothes,” he said, gesturing at her dress. “It’s a cute dress.”
“It’d look better on your floor?” she guessed, looking up into his eyes. His cheeks burned at her words. “I’m sure it would. Your freckles still pop when you blush.”
Dean laughed. “Yeah, some things never change.”
“So, your omega didn’t mind you coming to Vegas to see me?” she asked, biting her bottom lip.
“No omega. No wife, no girlfriend. You?”
She giggled, setting her hand on his shoulder. “No wife or girlfriend for me either.”
“Seriously, Taffy.” His voice went soft. “You got somebody waitin’ at home for you?”
“Yeah.” She smiled as his stomach dropped, and ran her hand up his shoulder to the back of his neck. “I have a husky dog named Wolf. Real original, I know, but she was a rescue...already named.” She pulled his head down and bumped her nose against his. “No husband, no boyfriend...no alpha.” He gasped as she kissed the corner of his mouth. “I’ve been waiting for you, Dean.”
His head went a little dizzy at her words. “Y/n.”
“Have you been waiting for me?” she whispered into his ear.
“Betas only, baby. Never had a ‘mega. Only ever wanted you,” he answered.
She smiled bright as she pulled back and looked into his eyes again. “I’ve only ever really wanted you, too. I think about you all the time, Dean. Never thought…” She looked soft and innocent as she sighed. “I’m so happy you found me.”
“Me, too.”
“I might be getting an award, so I...I can’t leave yet, but...after the show’s over...why don’t you come back to my hotel with me?” He was just about to say ‘God yes’ when she finished with, “I can show you all the things I’ve learned over the past fifteen years.” His jaw dropped, words frozen in his throat. All he could do was nod. “Good. I’ve been dreaming of this since high school. Put my number in your phone. You won’t be allowed on the mezzanine with me, so I’ll have to find you after.”
Dean pulled out his phone and entered her number as she rattled it off, immediately sending her a text so that she had his number, too. She shined as she looked down at her phone screen to see the text ‘Hey mega <3’. “God, you’re cute.” She giggled and wrapped her arm around his neck again, pulling him down for a quick kiss.
What should have been a quick kiss, anyway, because he couldn’t let her go once he had her on his lips. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her against him. She tasted just like he remembered. Her hands buried in his hair as he pushed her against the wall and licked at her tongue. She moaned as his hands moved down her back to grasp at her ass. He was panting when he pulled back. “Sorry. I...suddenly, I’m sixteen with no control of myself again.”
She giggled that laugh that he loved with all of his heart and patted his cheek. “Well, I just can’t wait to see you really lose control, Dean,” she said before spinning away from him and the wall, her skirt twirling as she headed back toward the mezzanine.
Dean sighed and watched her until she disappeared from his sight. She was so much better than he remembered. She was perfect. She was his.
WHEN EARTH TURNS TO ASHES
Masterlist
Chapter Eight: Incidents and Accidents
Rain poured outside of the school building, despite the fact that it was snowing back in Colorado. Olympia's weather was much more constant— remaining at a cool, rainy temperature year-round. Kai couldn't imagine living in a place where seeing the sun was an uncommon treasure. He needed sunshine almost as much as he needed air, but maybe that was just because he's grown up in constant sunshine.
The door to the principal's office swung open, and out stepped a large, smiling man resembling the Wolf on his door placard. Kai turned wary; he didn't much fancy going into a principal's office after all the time's he'd spent in his own.
It was always Thorne, coming up with a stupid plan and getting them sent to the principal. Kai tried fruitlessly to convince him to stop, but in the end they would always be back up in front of Principal Konn.
"Kaito Crown?" The man's voice came out as something close to a growl. "I'm Alpha Strom." Kai bit back laughter as the principal extended his hand politely— the things that some hippies did. Kai shook the man's hand, and found that he had a pleasantly business-like firm handshake. It reminded Kai of his father.
"You can just call me Kai," Kai said. "Only my dad ever calls me that; and my old school principal."
A bark of laughter split the air, and the two grinned. "I take it you don't have fond feelings for your late principal, then?"
"No, I got along with him fine. He and my father were childhood friends, and he was like another parent to me." Kai thought back on Torin. He was a kind, wise man. He had been there for Kai every moment after his mother had died. "My friend was a major troublemaker, though, so I always had to go and talk with Principal Konn."
"Ah, I see how it is then." Principal Strom winked, gesturing for Kai to enter his office. "Come in and take a seat. I imagine that for whatever reason you're here, it's important."
"You have no idea," Kai muttered. He had planned what he was going to ask the Principal on his five hour flight to Olympia. He had brainstormed about it as he had tried to sleep in his hotel. He had thought about Selene, and how much she was counting on him— or maybe Kai was just counting on himself for Selene.
Strom walked around his large, beat-up desk to sit in a high-backed chair. The seating arrangement looked uncomfortable on his large frame, even though it would have drowned Kai. The room was plain, barren. The only decoration was a flag with the wolf mascot stamped across and the bold letters of OHS. "What would you like to discuss with me today then, Mr. Crown."
"Selene Linh." Kai sat straight up in his chair, mirroring the man across from him. His father had taught him that presenting your best self was one's greatest asset in getting a business deal; Kai hoped that the same applied to gleaning information from an old High School principal.
"She went here about two years back, before–"
"Before she ran away." Principal Strom rubbed two fingers against the bridge of his nose. "I remember Selene. A brilliant girl with a tragic story."
Kai shivered at Strom's words. He didn't appear to hate the girl judging by his demeanor, but he may have just been good with facial masks. "Yes, you see, Selene recently got into a bad car accident. She lost part of her left leg and has severe nerve damage. I just– I'm trying to find someone who cares for her."
The principal stared at Kai, his dark eyes piercing. He was a kind man, but not one to be messed with either. "You may have a hard time with that," Strom said. "Before she ran away, she was constantly bullied, though she never admitted it— too proud to admit. All sorts of rumors were spread about her, and no one ever knew whether or not they were true."
"Were they about how she killed her sister?" Kai asked, his burning curiosity getting the better of him. There was something mysterious about the young girl's death. Something covered up and suspicious.
Principal Strom's face revealed nothing, but his hitched breath showed that the question was shocking. "Yes, they were about Peony Linh."
Kai sat forward in his seat. "How exactly did Peony Linh die? Do you know?"
"No one knows. No one except for the family— they were under strict orders to keep things related to Selene under the wraps until the final adoption papers were completed." Principal Strom looked grave. "Selene and Peony went somewhere; Selene came back alone. No one talked about Peony after that, except for the rumors that spread about Selene having killed her; most of them spread by Pearl Linh."
"Do you think that Selene killed Peony Linh?" Kai asked urgently.
"Personally?" Strom shook his head. "Selene was a fierce girl. I knew her well. But I do believe that she would never have harmed Peony— at least not intentionally."
"Did Selene have a violent past?" Kai cringed as the words slipped out of his mouth. He felt guilty for digging into Selene's past, but he needed to know what was going on. He needed to know her.
"Technically, I'm not supposed to tell you anything about Selene," Principal Strom looked uncomfortable. "But I am willing to tell you what I do know, as long as it's just between the two of us."
Kai nodded fervently.
"Okay, so I don't know much, except for the basics. Her Social Service worker, Liam Kinney, worked his butt off to help her, but trouble always followed Selene. The family before the Linh's, they had wanted to adopt Selene as well, but then there was an incident. I don't know what happened," Strom put his palms flat against the table, cutting Kai off before he could ask. "Kinney kept things tied up very tightly. I would give you his contact information, but I lost track of him about a year ago."
"Like I said, Selene was a kind girl, but dark things always seemed to follow her. Not many people would be willing to tell you much about her; especially not the Linh's. I can, however give you one person who might give you your best shot." Strom pulled out a piece of paper and began to write something down.
"Who would that be?" Kai asked, feeling despondent. He had hoped for more than 'she has a dark past' and 'I can't give you much information.' He wanted answers.
Strom paused from his writing. "Selene's friend. Well, someone who was once her friend." Strom glanced at his computer, clicking a few tabs and keys before he finished his note.
"Here," Strom said, handing Kai the paper. It had an address, a phone number, and a name written in barely legible writing. "She stayed here local since graduating. She was a star pupil, but and outsider; like Selene."
"Thank you for all of your help," Kai stood, and extended a hand to Strom. They shook, and Strom had a melancholy glint to his dark eyes.
"I do hope you can do something for Selene. I always– I wish that I could have done more for her." Strom patted Kai on the back. "I knew that she was being bullied, and I did nothing. I knew that she was drowning, and never did I throw her a life raft. I hope that perhaps you'll be able to accomplish what I could not."
A burning sensation filled Kai's chest. He simply nodded his head, and walked away before he had to look at more of this guilt in the old man's face.
Selene may have caused a great amount of anger and heartbreak, but she caused just as much guilt and sorrow. She was a burning pathway of destruction and loss. She was a magnet for bad luck, but also for people. She was a forest fire: calamitous and deadly, but impossible to ignore. She was a fallen angel, causing the Heavens to weep at her downfall and Hell scorn the beauteous creature in fear of her being the greatest of them all.
Kai read the note again, launching the coordinates into his phone. He would figure out what happened. He would track down Liam Kinney if he had to. But for now, he would talk to Cress Darnel.
***
"Why?" Selene's words were harsh and bitter. "I thought you were my friend. I trusted you." Betrayal twisted her words into a comfortless whisper.
Cress's big blue eyes widened, and Selene would have felt guilty under different circumstances. "You know that I didn't do it— I didn't mean for it to happen. I didn't think–" Selene choked on her words. "We– I– she was my sister. I loved her. You know that."
Selene had cornered Crescent after class, needing to speak to her one last time. She had to know if the betrayal was an act of free will or forced. She wanted nothing more than to believe that Cress didn't mean it. The look in her best friend's eyes, however, was answer enough.
"I thought I did." Cress squeaked. Her eyes were brighter than usual. "But Pearl, she told me the truth. She told me, and now the whole thing makes sense. This wasn't even the first time you've killed someone." Cress looked sick as she said the words. "Ran Kesley–"
"Don't," Selene spat the words like fire. "Don't you dare. That was–"
"An accident?" Cress cut through, her voice rising with nerves and mockery. "You and I both know that an accident like that doesn't just reoccur. You planned it all. You're a freak; a sociopath. Do you even know what love is?"
Selene flinched as if Cress had caused her physical pain. It wasn't the first time she had heard the words, but hearing them come from her best friend made then sting more than they had coming from Adri or Pearl or even Mr. Kesley.
Cress's face softened, but less out of sympathy than horror and sadness. "You tore apart families, Selene. You may not have intended it to happen, but you still caused it. You– you–" Cress covered her eyes with her small, delicate fingers.
"I don't even know why you stay here." Cress murmured, her posture hardening. "No one wants you." Cress hissed. Selene had never heard such unkind words come from the girl. Cress had always been so sweet; now she was ice and a cruel knife in the back.
Bile filmed in Selene's mouth. There were so many things that she wanted to say. Thousands of comebacks, dozens of betrayals; but nothing came.
"Me neither."
Winner’s Curse Ch. 20
So here’s a brand new chapter. Some mentions of Tangled the series characters. And of course, some double crossing. Enjoy. "Why are we here?" CJ squinted suspiciously at the ;avish room they were in. It was stone like the rest of the castle, decorated with lavish tapestries and filled with multi-colored orbs and chests of fake golds that looked filched from Jafar's Junk Shop they were so rusted. She knew each member of the Coven had their own private room, decorated to their theme but since this didn't have a sea theme or a Bayou theme, she was out of luck of guessing who this one was. What's more she didn't care.
It had been almost two weeks and though CJ had studied the waterways, scoured the uncleaned, and trash-filled sewers for secret passages, and secretly inspected the ships she planned to plunder, Lady Caine hadn't listened to any of her plans. More specifically, Lady Caine hadn't allowed her to even talk about her plans. Even though the self-proclaimed pirate queen had given her the mission to create a plan to pillage Auradon with her fleet, she decided to load CJ with a new job of spying on the Coven to find out their plans.
Though CJ was all for a good backstabbing against the high and mighty sorcerers that liked throwing their weight around. BUt CJ bristled at being given another mission. Like Caine was handing off duties to her as if she was some second in command. And CJ was no one's second command. That was Harry. That was Smee. She had ambition, she had guts, and if Caine was trying to use her, she swore she'd... "Caine, darling!" A voice cried and in walked a violet eyed brunette with the longest legs CJ had ever seen. She wore a purple dress matched with a black trench coated, both looked quite new leading CJ to believe she was one of the new transfers like Circe and Morgain le Fey. "CJ, this is Staylan, daughter of the notorious kingpin, and a wonderful thief herself." Lady Caine explained, kissing her deeply, and CJ held back a laugh at the ridiculous name, "We have similar plans for old Queen Rapunzel and her prince when we take over Corona."
"Oh no, not me. I'm over Ryder. It's Beast I have a problem with." Staylan growled, "How dare that mongrel send me and Brock here. Rapunzel vouched for us. She lectured me about being good years ago and I listened...mostly. A girl's gotta have some fun."
"So what's that gotta do with me? Why are we here?" CJ demanded to know, a bit of the impatience that she had been holding in the past days starting to spill over. Plans were all well and good but all this waiting was making CJ anxious. She spent 10 minutes pacing the floor just going over her plan obsessively. That Hook trait was starting to get hold of her and was driving her crazy if they didn't enact a plan. "This is our hideout. Oh, CJ, we can't stay in Maleficent's castle forever. We need our own allies. You don't think we're going to act as enforcers for the Coven? We have our own insiders. we're going to cut the Coven off at the bridge and take over Auradon ourselves through infiltration." Caine said.
CJ couldn't stop the way her mouth dropped from surprise even though she knew it made her seem unprofessional and out of her league.
Caine had been keeping this secret from her! But what about her plan?
She needed to rearrange all of her strategy if they weren't going to be relying on the Coven's magic.
Also there was the darker thread running in her mind. If Caine was keeping this from her.
What other surprises were waiting?
"Helllllooo Staylan?" A man's voice called and said horse-named girl rolled her eyes, "Coming my prince." "You're with that control freak?" Lady Caine raised her eyebrow sardonically.
Staylan shrugged, "Sure, I'm married to Hans but that's only for the money. Brock is my true husband. We're all very open."
CJ's mouth dropped again. She heard the rumors that Prince Hans had married but since Lars had often talked about his father's sadomasochist nights with Drizella and other prostitutes, she had assumed they were just that, rumors.
But he was married? And his wife was cheating on him? CJ knew he would not be a fan of that. Like Caine said, he was a control freak and into pretending he was still royal. "I know. I was there Friday night." Lady Caine smirked.
"Hey, he has his affairs, I have mine. At least I have the decency not to do it in the dungeon when he's in the castle. I can hear Drizella's screams all night long. It's impossible to sleep." Mmm that explained it. Unofficial open marriage. Very common.
"Anyway, just wanted to drop in to let you know that Hans is also willing to support your takeover of Auradon and block any of the Coven's efforts. Lars will even overpower Staqauit if need be." Staylan said. "Thanks, Stal. Please let Morgain in when she knocks." Lady Caine instructed. "Knocks? That freaking le Fey never knocks she pops in her like a-ahhrgh!" Lady Caine opened the door to reveal a Morgain le Fey and one huffy Staylan walking away. "Can you explain what she is doing here if she's part of the Coven?" CJ reluctantly whispered as Morgain ignored her and began to use a portable cauldron to do some sort of spell.
"CJ, you're smart. Why do you think she's here if she's part of the Coven we are double crossing?" Lady Caine turned the question back onto her. "She's double crossing them too." CJ answered, feeling a bit unsteady, a bit seasick which never happened to her. After all she was a pirate at heart and loved the sea. But all the double crosses, she was starting to feel uneasy that there was something else Caine was holding out on her and that was Caine was going to doublecross her next. Why else had she been so eager to extend the hand of mother-daughter relationship after all these years but to use her for something?
The suspicion that her mother would be willing to betray her wasn't what upset her. It was the fear that she had no one to use now.
Her dream of getting her birthright was starting to slip.
Sure, she'd have the satisfaction of defeating her brother's girlfriend's Coven would have been nice. But nothing like getting the Jolly Roger. Nothing like proving she was better than Dad. Better than her siblings.
She would be the new legend. She had to. She needed two new plans now. Double cross Coven and double cross Mom.
"So what did you learn from the meetings?" Caine asked. CJ had sneaked around the meeting room, doing the tried and true tactic of hiding behind the curtains. So obvious, no one noticed her and she found out the date of their attack. “Good. See, Morgain calls the insiders from Auradon. Some of those goody goodys want the Beast to burn as much as we do. We tell them about the Coven. They go stop them and while they're on the Isle, we take over Auradon and kill the beast. Got it." CJ nodded. She understood and mentally, she was taking notes. She would need this. For now, she had to pretend she was still gleefully under her "mommy's" thumb.
"Ready to meet our inside contacts?" Lady Caine smirked as a blue flash enveloped them both. ———————————————————————————————————-
"I'll be ready in a minute dear." FG's voice called from the lobby that led to her Student Counselling room.
Alexandria shifted restlessly, rolling her eyes even though FG wasn't there to be shocked at her rudeness. She heard the way too happy godmother laugh, cooing something about "Oh Jane, that's very sweet." So sweet. That's one way to define FG. So sweet and peppy you could get a toothache from the sheer sacherinne bibbidi bobbidi boo-ness.
She could still hear FG chuckling and decided to look at the notes written in her Counseling Folder because if Alexandria knew anything, sweet was not everything. Sweet was the facade FG used to hide her real thoughts about people.
Alexandria shifted the open folder from her desk and eagerly read the contents to see what FG really thought of her attitude during their stupid counselling sessions that she hadn't even wanted in the first place.
Lately she hadn't felt any interest in school. Everything was boring.
What was the point of learning Potions, and Commotions if magic wasn't allowed in Auradon. Why should she learn Royal Politics if she wasn't technically going to rule as princess even though she was part of the Atlantica Royal Family.
Everything was useless.
Not that she slacked. She didn't allow herself to get anything less than a B. She was her mother's daughter and she would make her proud in a life so filled with disappointment.
But FG had noticed her lack of enthusiasm and pulled her into these bogus counselling sessions that have lasted for two months.
Admittedly, she hadn't thought it was going to suck when FG first suggested it. In fact Alexandria had felt relieved. Finally someone would listen to her about this hollow emptiness that seemed to permeate most of her days. Listen to her frustrations about her family and the rest of Auradon Prep students who barely knew her name.
The complete opposite happened. FG was sweet as eve, but her advice was asinine and from what she read of FG's notes, she didn't understand her at all. Alexandria of Atlantica and Olympia Contrary to the happy display at events, Crown Princess Attina's and Crown Prince Thor's (which Alexandria insists on others referring her parents to their former titles as King and Queen of Atlantica) arranged marriage had not blossomed into love as the public was led to believe. They are married out of duty and professionalism in order to lead their citizens. Since the Great Uniting of Kingdoms and relinquishing king/queenship of Atlantica, the couple lost the only tie binding them together.
Princess Attina has moved on to working on Atlantica's tourism and nonprofit businesses to protect the reefs and Atlantica's ecological system. Thor has no interests nor the skills since he had only been trained to rule and seems to be engaging in extramarital dealings. Alexandria is absorbing this dysfunction to become morose, defensive and irrational, blaming her parent's estrangement on her Aunt Ariel whom the populace has elected to be the new queen. I will call Princess Attina and suggest family counseling to improve Alexandria's attitude in school.
Alexandria threw the folder back on FG's desk, wishing she hadn't looked. She knew FG thought she was being defensive. She saw the plastered smile as FG encouraged her to "think positively" and see the issue from another angle and her life wasn't "so bad as she was making it out to be." But she wasn't irrational! She had a right to be "morose" about this.
Aunt Ariel was to blame for her parents losing their kingdom! Aunt Ariel could have done so many things when people elected Aunt Ariel to be queen. She could have refused! She could have given it to her mom. She could have said she didn't want to be queen of Atlantica as well as Uncle Eric's kingdom. Besides that election hadn’t even fair! For the sake of the new monarch-democracy, King Beast allowed all of Auradon to vote for the king and queens of the new united kingdoms. And all those strangers from Agrabah and Charmington and China and Camelot, peasants and fairies voted for the ruler of Atlantica to be Ariel, overwhelming the votes of the mermaids in Atlantica whose tiny population compared to the rest of Auradon brought an overwhelming 75% Ariel to 25% Attina.
Of course they voted for Ariel. Ariel was the one they knew. The quirky and adventurous mermaid who sacrificed everything for love. Not her mother. The eldest, the responsible daughter who had trained and been brought up to be a ruler, who had already married her father so they could unite their two sea kingdoms, whom the people of Atlantica loved as queen. And now 10 years later, her parents were miserable, her beloved home was a tourist trap that was polluted, littered and filled with obnoxious foreigners taking pictures and scaring fish, and she was stuck in this boarding school to be told to look at things positively and be happy that she is a princess, she could be less off like a VK.
FG walked into the room and Alexandria stood up. She couldn't bear to stay in front of her doughy cheeked, happy peppiness
“I have to go FG," Alexandria stared at the ground, sure if she looked at her face she would begin to scream all the obscenities running through her head, "I-I have a test tomorrow."
"Alright honey. After knowledge and learning keep you happy through life. But I still feel we should continue meeting. My suggestion for this week is to try not to think about the past. Just focus on the happy now." FG said softly, a "comforting" hand patting her shoulder, the sincerity oozing out like oil rippling through ocean waves. Alexandria didn't answer. She just turned and stalked out the room, a million thoughts crashing in her head and pressing against her chest in a tight coil."Don't focus on the past." Easy for her to say when the past was still directly affecting her present. She hated to read the Atlantica Courier everyday to see a new plea for tourists not to litter or will face severe consequences which never came to fruition because they could just bribe their way out. Read about the newest oil spill or kelp forests being harvested for spas. Read about her mom's hard work in various Atlantica nonprofits that took several years of board meetings and schmoozing and still didn't accomplish all the goals Attina wanted.
Whenever she visited the palace for vacation, she'd see her grandfather avoid looking out the windows because of how changed the kingdom was. Dull, grey, the coral eroding. Her aunts visits, exhausted from hosting Atlantica tours and arranging kingdom-wide clean ups of the reef while trying to find time to carve out careers based on their own passions. Passions pushed aside when their kingdom turned into a tourist attraction.
Her dad, when he was home and not off trying to find some new entertainment, would lead her around the royal treasury, telling her of their family history and all he had learned. His royal lessons that were useless to him now that he had no kingdom.
Sometimes she'd hear her mother crying alone in her room at night, but by day she'd be back to her stoic grim determination. Act like a true queen and keep her feelings inside so she could lead those who needed help more than herself.
So lost was she in her thoughts that she was jolted out of them when she was banged against the lockers. One particular bejeweled lock scraping her shoulder. When she rubbed, droplets of blood smeared. "Heyy, oh sorry Arabella! Nice solo yesterday in Auratones." Herkie yelled as he rushed off.
Arabella! Freaking Arabella. Somehow all of Auradon could remember the names and sometimes the order of the seven dwarfs, but remembering the name of Aunt Ariel's six sisters was beyond their capabilities. So for someone to confuse her with her cousins was a common event.
Despite the fact that some of them were even blonde or redheads and thus very distinguishable from Alexandria’s own dark brown hair. Not that anyone would ever confuse her with Melody. Oh no, no one would ever forget Melody, being the daughter of oh-so amazing Ariel. Her story was just as memorable as her mother's. How cute it was that Ariel wanted to be a human while Melody wanted to be a mermaid. Adorable! Alexandria always had to resist the urge to roll her eyes at that. Everyone seemed to think that her aunt and cousin were so courageous chasing after what they wanted. No, they were stupidly impulsive and lucky.
Ariel was lucky that Eric returned her love. If he hadn't, Atlantica would be in ruins, Aunt Ariel dead and Eric married to a witch. And sure, Ariel defeated Ursula but if Ariel hadn't tried to bargain with Ursula in the first place, then Ursula wouldn't have gotten close to Atlantica in the first place! Ariel was one of the lucky few to get a happily ever after. Much like all of Auradon's beloved couples but if others tried to do the same and follow their hearts...
Her grandfather still sometimes laughed and cringed thinking of the great Land Migration where mermaids and mermen, inspired by Ariel, tried to find potions to walk on land. People transformed into fish, clams, even a few seagulls. Those who managed to find the right one only stayed for two hours on land, finding the surface world to be as messy and awful as Sabastian always warned. Aunt Ariel had been so lucky that way. She barreled into situations and she always came out on top. While her mom worked and strived to do her best and had everything taken away from her yet she didn't complain. She didn't tell Alexandria her problems nor would she confide in grandfather Triton, she heard the way her mom dismissed his concerns. She'd just say she was the queen, it was up to her to take care of things. Grandfather should just enjoy his retirement. Alexandria should be a teenager.
But Alexandria wasn't blind. She could see her father sneaking other women into guest rooms. Could hear the fights between closed doors. Feel the silence during family dinners. Alexandria dug out her phone and called her mom to get voicemail. That's what always happened and she left her usual message, "Hey Mom, just checking in. I love you. I'm thinking about you." It was a small thing but she always did it. Her mom had to know she had her by her side no matter how bad things got.
Or if things stayed the same. And that's what Alexandria secretly feared.
Every day being the same. Nothing changing for the better. She'd be stuck as Alexandria with a meaningless title. Princess Alexandria of Atlantica. Always confused with her cousins because nothing of her life was special.
She'd work at her mother's nonprofits trying to fulfill familial duty to make Atlantica better but reach nothing because she wasn't special enough. If Ariel told people to pick up their trash and drink Atlantica's famous kelp smoothies, people would obey like mindless sheep. But if it was Alexandria urging people to think of the environment was like screaming into the void. It would have been worthwhile if she was going to be queen. She understood the duty but all work with no crown, no citizens to advocate for. It was useless.
She was useless.
This was what the rest of her life was going to be like. Her chest clutched tighter and her heart pounded. She could hear the pounding in her ears as it came faster and faster. Oh great Neptune, she felt like it was punching against her chest.
BaBOOM BaBOOm BaBOMBaBOOMBABOOMBABOOMBABOOM. She ran, she ran as if she could escape the drumming heartbeat in her body, her feet echoing its rhythm as she bounded up the steps.
She struggled to open the door to her room, the lock feeling extremely slippery in her trembling grasp. She couldn't and knocked frantically on the door. Some part of her mind knew it was irrational yet she started to feel that if she wouldn't get into her room, her heart would explode. She was going to die in this hallway, if not from a heart attack but from lack of oxygen, she felt like she could breath. She couldn't breath, she tried to remember what Aunt Ariel had said when she first came to land. She had to breath in and out but she couldn't think how exactly she was supposed to do that, She needed water. She wanted water.
"Woah woah what is all the bangin-" Victoria Porter opened the door to their room and Alexandria pushed past her to flop on her water bed. Not like the lumpy bed other students had that jiggled but her bed was a glass case of water that felt so like home.
Her heart was still bursting out of her chest and she vaguely registered Victoria rubbing her back, asking if she needed water or something but Alexandria couldn't speak. It felt like hours passed but she knew from the times it had happened before, it had probably been only a few minutes.
"Hey.. what happened?" Victoria asked as Alexandria wiped her eyes from the tears that had formed.
"You know, life sucks." Alexandria managed beyond the lump in her throat, "I had another "counselling session" with Fairy Godmother and she wrote that I was irrational for blaming Ariel about my parents."
“Ahhh," Victoria nodded understandingly, "You're not irrational. Don't listen to her, After all, she's the same woman who thought reviving the world's worst and most heinous villains to put them together on the Isle was a good idea. COme on, she's hardly the epitome of someone acting rational. She is in favor of the Magic Ban, she is going against her roots." Alexandria sniffed, and smiled a little considering how Victoria used to be in favor of the Magic Ban.
Victoria had felt magic was a short cut and couldn't solve everything. Not like science which always progressed forward. "True."
"You know, I'm right." Victoria leaned on the glass, "I know something that will cheer you up. Kyro and Morrían are available to start talking to Caine."
Alexandria immediately sat up, spilling her water onto the floor, but she didn't care. "Now? In the middle of the day They're hardly awake during the day like weird vampire people." Alexandria cried.
"I don't know why they're up now but they are. Come on, Caine said she has something very important to tell us." Victoria pulled out her phone as Morrian's serious and Kyro's bored faces popped up on Auradon-Face, "We're all ready. Bring on Caine."
Morrían’s tangled black tresses had a way of framing her violet eyes that whenever she was annoyed or angry, it would like two flashing orbs sparkling out of a dark cave, just as they were now at Victoria's cheerful attitude. "Porter, you must remember to call her Lady Caine." "Ugh she's no lady. She's a pirate." Victoria scowled. “Well we are working with her and we better keep a good relationship with her until we can turn her over to the authorities." Morrían reminded.
"But she's a thief. She's evil. Why shouldn't we remind her that she's a lowly little-"
Morrían’s eyes flashed and Kyro chucked, the Never fairy seemingly to wake up from his usual unimpressed expression to enjoy the potential hexing. Morrían’s fingers steepled her fingers together, blue flames flickering menacingly.
The gesture had its intended reaction as Victoria slumped a little and pursued her lips, no doubt remembering that Morrían le Fey was the daughter of one the most dangerous and morally flexible magic user in all of Camelot. "Now then, I shall call her up." Since Lady Caine was a mortal on the Isle and obviously had no ability to use magic, Morrían and Morgaine would work in tandem to briefly teleport Lady Caine to Camelot so they could all see her from Auradon-Face. There was a flash of blue behind Morrían’s screen and Lady Caine and the pirate that Alexandria recognized to be as CJ Hook appeared.
“Why is she here?" Victoria growled. "Relax, she’s my kid. She's part of the deal." Lady Caine smirk, "She won't betray us. She wants Auradon to go down just as much as we all do."
Alexandria managed to school her face from the obvious shock she felt to know CJ Hook was not only Hook's daughter but Caine's as well, and side-eyed Victoria. They wanted to bring down Auradon. That's what they allowed Lady Caine to believe.
What they wanted was a revolution to the past.
It had all begun after Cotillion. It had been at one of the kingdom press conference/town hall that they had met and found they had similar issues with the kingdom they lived in. They wanted to go back to the way things were before the Uniting and the creation of the Isle.
Alexandria had always known Victoria's fiery opinions about the latter. The formation of the Isle led to the creation of Vks when villains were better off dead. Now Vks were trying to get revenge on behalf of their parents.
Stellar future planning King Beast.
Victoria’s view was that the Vks should stay on the Isle because it was a waste of time and energy to integrate 11 year old and older to Auradon. It led to some sibling friction between her and her older brother, Kerchak who was on King Ben’s side that some of the kids could be reformed.
Alexandria was unsure of her stance on the VKs. Morally, she knew it was better to get them away from their parents but on the other hand, they seemed more trouble than they were worth. Truthfully, The whole Isle of the Lost was more of a distraction to what she considered bigger problems that existed within Auradon. Since the formation of the Isle was one obvious mistake, then other decisions King Beast had made that should be changed. The whole Great Uniting should be reversed. The first major problem was the Auradon-wide elections of people voting in things they weren't informed in like when they voted for Aunt Ariel, an inspiring story, but unprepared princess, to rule Atlantica.
Secondly was the arbitrary melding of kingdoms so the continents became one mega continent leading to turf wars like China vs Agrabah in the Great Olive Oil-Carpet Fights until King Ben had resolved it after his father left the issue unattended.
There was the fact that the kingdoms were not equal now they were united. Atlantica was being used as a playground for royals to trapiese around in their underwater vacations. Arendelle's ice was being transported among all the kingdoms instead of being fairly distributed to its own people. Atlantis was besieged by pissed off scientists that wanted to explore and dig in its ruins instead of respecting the purity of the culture that came from being isolated.
Then there was the Magic Ban which Kyro and Morrían felt very strongly about for the obvious reason of their magical heritage. Kyro didn't like that in order to "fit in" with the other students that he had to take Wonderlandia potion to grow human sized and hide his wings. Furthermore, he hated the compulsory education that he was expected to attend because he was the son of the semi-famous Never bad girl fairy, Vidia. He did not find any use in classes about politics and history. He wanted to go home and embrace his fast-flying roots as part of the rest of the Never fairy system.
Another strike he hated was that because his father was Kyto, the greedy dragon of Neverland (a parentage that Alexandria wasn't sure how it worked and hated to imagine), he was also forced to attend the patronizing Remedial Goodness class with FG. Morrían had the more pressing problem that adults wanted her to be sent to the Isle of the Lost after they had already sent her mother away from her in the second purge of potential villains after Cotillion. Morrían despised what she saw as the hypocrisy that mortal royals could do whatever they wanted and reach after their dreams but immortals and magical creatures like her had to hide their gifts or hold back in order to make things "fair." Nevermind that hiding their magic felt unnatural and painful to some. Alexandria understood that, she remembered the first time she had used her legs, living on land with its arid dryness and lack of fluidity. No one had believed her that she felt shooting pain every time she walked, she had been so unused to the jarring rub and grind of leg muscles and of course, having to actively remind herself to inhale and exhale air.
She had gotten used to it.. after a month but she knew others like Morrían whose magic was part of their essence that it felt suffocating. Like wearing a corset all the damn time. So they had to go back. Back to when they were all isolated kingdoms. Allied but separate. Each kingdom dealt with their own criminals and the Vks that came from them, their trade and magical beings themselves. No one had to be uniformed with others or bend down to the will of richer kingdoms.
Morrían had been the one to mention that she felt there was a hole in the Barrier of the Isle, that magic was spilling into the hands of the worst villains and that she would have to warn someone. But that she felt conflicted because her mother was trapped there and she felt maybe she should let the magic stay there. At least long enough for her mother to regain her strength and break out on her own. Alexandria was the one who had come up with the idea of allowing the villains to escape. With Morgain on the inside, they'd have inside information to what the Coven was doing. They'd be able to use their tactics against the villains, and save the day. Morgain befriended Caine and got them in contact with her since she was supposedly a master technician and infiltrator since she nearly killed King Fredric back when Rapunzel first returned. Albeit their grand rescue would be a bit delayed.
They could not act like they knew too much about the Coven's plan, that they had been conspiring with Lady Caine and so they had to allow her to cause some chaos and get vengeance. Victoria had suggested that perhaps Auradonians needed a close call to see how weak the Auradonian Royal Guard was spread out among the kingdoms, they'd see that it would be tactically intelligent to split the kingdoms.
Morrían and Morgain wanted to be able to save Camelot and usurp Merlin as top sorcerer as deserved since he was just as hypocritical as FG. And Alexandria... Alexandria was willing to let some parts of Atlantica get crushed. Specifically the royal beach homes that were built there, ruining the pristine ocean with their gaudy mansions. So yes, they were allowing Auradon to descend into chaos when knowing they could save it.
Perhaps it was wrong. But sometimes one needed to strike fear and terror in order to make a point.
Auradon as it stood was not working. Radical change had to happen. She wasn't going to end up like her mom and work in the system that is crushing her. "Tell us, Lady Caine," Kyro purred, "What is so important?" She had told them that it seemed King Ben had sent another covert group to try to defeat the Coven but thankfully they seemed subdued with Jay under Jafar's hypnosis and the rest imprisoned though Lady Caine still was suspicious of the motives of Circe's son.
Although Alexandria was secretly glad there was another group ready to fight against the Coven, she worried that they'd succeed before Lady Caine could invade.
Then Jay and Prince Aziz would get all the fame. Sons of enemies teaming up and saving Auradon was just the fairy tale that people would eat up and nothing would change. Lady Caine did not respond to Kyro's smile which was odd since the two seemed to enjoy volleying seductive voices and bedroom eyes. A trait that always unnerved Alexandria.
Though she understood that Kyro was probably trying to get Lady Caine to believe they truly wanted to overthrow Auradon and let everyone they love die, it was creepy how easy being bad was for him.
Then again, he was fey. If there was anything she learned from Magical Beings: Friends and Foes was that fae operated on a different level of morality than mortals and mermaids like her. "The Coven has a date of attack." Lady Caine informed them, "Summer solstice.” The solstice was 7 days from now. "Thank you." Alexandria said, "We will contact you again tomorrow to discuss our plans." "Actually I have some ideas." CJ smiled, grandly gesturing in front of her mom but Morrian teleported them back before she could continue.
7 days time. They can do this. She wasn’t like Aunt Ariel, jumping into danger. She had this all planned out, and that meant her rescue of Auradon would be better. Her fairy tale ending would fit.
She studied and strived and looked at all the angles. She was responsible like that and though Auradon would never admit it but impulsively following your heart only lead to temporary happiness until reality set in.
But she was a realist, she was studious and that would make her happiness permanent in a new old world order.
Chapter 8: A Friend
Chapter summary: An alien masquerading as a friend nearly finishes off the world, just another casual trip for our travelling trio!
Author’s Note: Now before anyone comments on it, Rose using the name "Minerva" is done on purpose. It will be discussed in the next chapter!
"You would not believe the assignment I have," I groaned as I entered the apartment, "Oh..." I stopped when I saw the Doctor, Rose and Jackie sitting at the couch, "You're back again? Weird, you were just here last week," I threw my school bag on the floor,"I haven't even ate whatever the stuff was Mickey brought me. I don't care what he says, it doesn't look edible. Where is Mickey anyways?" I looked around, "Eating?" They remained quiet. "I just asked a question? Did he go home for clothes or...?" I waited but still I received no answered. I took a moment and studied their faces. "Wh-what happened?" My heart started picking up. "Doctor, don't tell me he's dead-"
"He's not," he assured, standing up, "He's perfectly fine and alive. In fact, I'd say he's pretty happy."
"Then where is he?" I asked, swallowing hard with a nerve-wrecking feel.
He sighed, reaching inside his coat and taking out an envelope. He handed it to me without a word. I looked at the envelope and him for a moment before taking it, knowing however happy Mickey apparently was, I wouldn't be.
Dear Minnie,
You're probably the only regret I have of staying here because I won't be able to say goodbye to you in person. I'll never give you a hug and a proper goodbye. And for that, I'm really sorry, please forgive me. I'll admit, this idea started out as an impulse but...then it became important for me to go through with it, because I really wanted to.
I'm in a parallel universe and I don't believe we'll ever talk to each other again, much less see each other. I am staying here by choice, and that's because I don't believe I have anything else in your world. Besides you, I'm pretty much on my own. Here, I have my grandmother whom I loved so much and had to bury in your world. But in this world, my new home, I still have her. And I know you'll understand me because of Isadora. If she had died in your world but you had the chance to stay in a world where she was alive, you would do it, right?
I know you'll be fine because you're with them. You're with Jackie and Rose and the Doctor. They'll take care of you or you'll take care of them. You don't need me. Just last week we spoke about Isadora and the rest, and my advice still stands. Talk to everyone, beginning with Rose and the Doctor. Tell them how you feel then go for the rest. Talk to them. I'm sure it'll do you good. I know it will.
Good bye my Minnie. I guess this Mickey has to find you in this world too. Wonder what you're like here? I hope you're not as stubborn too! Please take care of yourself, just like you always have. I'll miss you.
Love,
Mickey Smith.
I looked up, my tears hurriedly strolling down my face. I shook my head, as if denying this would help anyone.
The Doctor sighed, "Joy I'm so sorry-"
"No. That's not true...this isn't true," I started sniffling loudly, "Please tell me it's not! He can't be gone!"
"He chose to stay."
"Noo..." my voice cracked, "He just left...he was supposed to come back!"
"Joy we're really sorry," Rose stood up, "If he could've he would've returned to say goodbye but parallel universes are impossible to travel through."
"So I'm never gonna see him anymore? Possibly my best friend and he's gone now. Forever!" I threw the letter down and rushed to Rose's room, slamming the door and bursting into sobs.
The only person who knew every last detail about me was gone. And he'd never come back. If I thought I was alone before now it's really true. I wouldn't be able to talk to anyone now. Jackie was a fine woman, but she was like a mother. I needed a friend.
My best friend was gone. What would I do now?
~0~
"Joy, can I come in?" the Doctor was knocking on the door. With no answer, he slowly opened it. "I don't...I don't really have words for you..." he admitted, slowly approaching me by the bed and sitting down, "I wish I could comfort you but...there's nothing I could do to make you feel better and I'm sorry."
"Did he have fun?" I asked, keeping my head rested on a pillow. "Did you bring him to fantastic places?"
"Yeah, we had amazing times," he quickly said, sensing that'd make me feel knowing Mickey had had fun, "You saw how excited he was when we were going to leave."
I smiled, remembering it all, "Yeah..."
He sighed, "I'm sorry, Joy. I know how hard it is to say good bye to people you care about."
I looked at him, sitting up, "Thank you for bringing me the letter."
He smiled, handing me the letter I had thrown earlier. He took my hand, gripping it as he stared deeply into my eyes, even startling me with the sudden intense. "Joy, whenever you need me, you just call and I swear to you I will come. If it's four a.m and you need me, call and I will be here by 4:01. Do you understand?"
I blinked, replaying his words to make sure I had heard right, "But...why do you say that?"
"Huh?" He frowned, clearly not expecting that as a response.
But I mean really, after nearly a year of knowing him he'd never told me anything like that, much less given me that intense stare. "It's just out of character that's all..."
He sighed, seeming to struggle with something, "Before we left Mickey he said some words to me..."
My heart skipped a beat, my eyes wide as the thought of Mickey spilling everything to the Doctor came to mind. What if he had? No, no...the Doctor would have said something already...right?
"Joy, perhaps, I haven't been around very much but...you know I consider you my friend, right?"
I swallowed hard, gathering my courage for what would come next, "Doctor, what did Mickey tell you?"
He shook his head, faintly smiling, " It's not important. All you should know is that I'll be here when you need me. You and Rose are the two most important people in my life. My glimpse of happiness, I call both of you."
" You've never called me that..." I said quietly, looking down at my lap.
"...no, I guess I haven't," he said after a moment, as if realizing it as well. Good. "But you listen to me, Joy Souza, I care about you, I always have."
"R-Really?" My eyes watered up, never hearing so kind words from him like that.
"Oh Joy," he scooted closer, taking me into a hug.
I cried for Mickey and for his touching words. I supposed Mickey hadn't told him everything just something that'd get the Doctor's mind working towards the grand realization.
"And, sorry for being nosy but, we went through your bag and I happened to have found an assignment..." he began, pausing as I looked up, "...how about I help you with that?"
I knew exactly where he was going with this. A dim smile spread on my face, already accepting the offer. Right now, I just needed to get out of here.
"London 2012!" I exclaimed, walking excitedly down the streets, "30th Olympia!" I twirled around.
"Careful, you'll fall," the Doctor warned, "Tell us again why you wear heels to school?"
"Huh?" I immediately looked down and realized I was still in my school uniform, "Oh c'mon," I turned around to them, "You didn't even give me a chance to change."
"Well when I said 30th Olympia you didn't exactly give me the chance to tell you," he countered.
Rose laughed, "I like it. Wish they were that fashionable back when I was there."
"Hm," I crossed my arms, "I don't like this."
"Oh you look fine. We're in an amazing time, Joy," the Doctor walked up, "Forget about it."
"Yeah, you're in the brink of the Olympics," Rose joined us, linking arms.
"Exactly, I'm in London and in the middle of the streets during the Olympics...in my school uniform," I frowned.
"Oh just focus on your article will you?" The Doctor linked arms as well. "Make this the best damn article you've ever written."
Rose chuckled, "I still don't understand why'd you join the journalist club."
"Sarah Jane," I admitted, "She talks so much about it I figured I'd give it a try. And plus, this academy's got a well rounded club for it."
"No more public school?" She raised an eye brow.
"After the Krillitanes I said no. And thanks to the Doctor for pulling some strings, I got into an even better school."
"Least I could after blowing up your old one," he swayed his head.
"And I'm almost caught up now. I should be graduating by the end of the year."
"We'll be there front row," Rose nodded.
"You better be. I already reserved seats for you two and Jackie and Mick-" I stopped, my smile vanishing.
The two stared sadly at me, "You know, you're name's Joy, live up to it," the Doctor poked my arm.
"Yeah..."
"You know, fun fact, I was here for the last Olympics they had in London; Wembley 1948. I loved it so much," he began his rambles and I knew he was telling us this just so that I'd keep distracted.
Rose suddenly let go of my arm and stayed behind, looking at something. The Doctor didn't seem to notice as he continued leading us ahead.
"Now what was his name...?" He thought, "Mark...? John?...Maybe Mark? Legs like pipe cleaners but strong as a whippet."
I chuckled, "That's a good way to remember someone. I dread to think how you'll remember me," And truthfully I did. Would he even remember me?
"The annoying, clever girl who challenges me on everything I do and say," he teased.
I smiled, proudly, not accepting the tease, "Well, I don't know how clever I am but I do challenge you because you're wrong sometimes. And, if we're being descriptive, I'll remember you as the daft, ridiculous alien."
He stopped walking and thought about it for a moment, making me snigger at his expressions. "You don't really think I'm ridiculous, right?" He frowned.
'What if I do?" I crossed my arms, deciding to tease him for the moment.
"I wouldn't like it..." His gaze fell to the ground.
I slightly ducked and caught his gaze, "I also think you're a kind, funny man."
He smiled softly as I stood straight again, "Yeah?"
I nodded, "Yes."
"Well," he swayed his head as he pretended to think again, "That's okay I guess."
"Doctor? Minerva?" Rose cut in, and we glanced over to find her not so pleased.
"Is something wrong?" I asked.
I could have sworn she gave me a quick glare before reverting to a smile. "I just thought you should come and see this." She gestured to a paper on the wall as we approached her.
There was a flyer of missing children, with no leads on either case.
"What's taking them?" I asked, still reading through the information.
"Snatching children from a thoroughly ordinary street like this. Why's it so cold...?" the Doctor looked around, "Is something reducing the temperature...?""
"It says they all went missing this week. Why would a person do something like this?"
"What makes you think it's a person?" The Doctor challenged.
A door opened, not far from us, and a woman was seen throwing out her recycling bag in front of her house. I noticed she was giving looks all around, like she was afraid. She quickly returned back in her house and shut the door.
"It's got the whole street wise scared," I remarked, "What could get-" But I saw the Doctor had already left and Rose right behind him.
I rolled my eyes, "Kind, funny and forgetful man," I mumbled as I hurried to catch them.
We stopped by a front yard with a mini-soccer goal on it. The Doctor stuck out his hand in front himself then knelt down and moved his hand around the grass.
It seemed strange to me and so it prompted for me to ask about it, "What are you-"
"Sh," He held up a finger.
I rolled my eyes and looked around. I noticed Rose was helping some people move a car on the street.
The Doctor giggling brought my attention back to him. "Tickles!" He exclaimed.
I made a face, "What are you-"
"What's your game?" A man suddenly approached us, not very happily.
Must be his house...
The Doctor struggled to come up with an answer as he got up from the grass, "My...um...Snakes and Ladders? Quite good at...Squash. Reasonable," the man only grew more irritated and the Doctor more nervous, "I'm...being facetious, aren't I?"
I nodded, "Annoyingly."
"What the hell do you think you're doing on my property?" The angry man advanced towards the Doctor.
"Woah, there," I cut in between the two, "We should calm down."
"Move aside, girl," he put a hand on my arm.
"Try anything and you'll have to learn how to eat with your feet," I snapped, pushing his hand away.
"We're police officers!" The Doctor pulled me back, "And I've got a badge and...and a car."
"This one is an officer?" The man looked at me.
"She's in training!" The Doctor flashed his psychic paper to the man. "It was either that or hair dresser."
"I still could make you look like a fashion disaster," I remarked, trying to follow with the lie.
"What are you two doing?" Rose joined us with a few other people.
"Are you officers?" A woman beside her asked.
"The police have knocked on every door but there's no clues or leads," came another neighbor.
"Look, kids run off sometimes, alright?" The man snapped, "That's what they do-"
"Dale Hixon in your garden, playing with your Tommy and then..." one of the women began, "Right in front of me he vanished. Like he was never there to begin with! There's no need to look ant further than this street. It's right here amongst us."
The Doctor looked from one to another, not quite following, "Why don't we-"
"Why don't we start with him?" A new woman pointed at one of the men with us. "There's been all sorts like him in this street, day and night!"
The accused man looked indignant at such an idea, "I'm fixing things up for the Olympics!"
"Taking an awful long time about it," snapped the man from the garden.
"I'm of the opinion that all we've gotta do is just-" the Doctor tried again but the arguments continued.
"What you just said is slander!"
"I don't care! It just makes sense!"
"I really think we need to just-" the Doctor tried once more but in vain.
"I want an apology from her!" The man pointed to the woman.
"Stop picking on him!" another woman yelled, "And stop pretending none of this is real!"
"EVERYONE SHUT UP!" I screamed, making them all flinch, "Shut the hell up already!"
"Fingers on lips!" the Doctor yelled over me, "Now!" He placed his finger on his lips and prompted for all of us to do the same. Everyone slowly obeyed, even myself.
I sighed, "I feel like I'm a second gra-"
"Sh!" He gestured with his finger.
"But-"
"SH!"
I only made a small noise again before he did the same again. Eventually, he won and I was shut.
"Alright, in the last six days, three of your children have been stolen," the Doctor began, "Snatched out of thin air?"
"Erm...can I...?" One of the woman slowly removed her finger from her lips. When the Doctor nodded she went right ahead. "Look around you, this was a safe street 'til it came. It's not a person. I'll say it if no one else will. Maybe you're coppers or maybe you're not but I don't care. Can you please help us?"
And that was all we needed to hear before we quickly agreed.
The Doctor sent everyone home until further notice while he, Rose and I remained on the crabby man's front yard.
"Sorry you can't write your article," Rose said as the Doctor sniffed his way around the yard.
I shrugged, "It's alright."
"Now Joy, we'll help you with that article right after this," the Doctor called.
"Don't worry, I can always search it up on the internet...like a normal student would do."
It wasn't so much for the assignment I had joined the pair for the trip. I knew that if I was at home with Jackie, all I'd do was sulk over Mickey...like he was dead. And he wasn't. He was breathing and happy. I couldn't sulk over that. Yet, I miss him so much. I needed a distraction...
"Too bad you're not, though," the Doctor looked up. I mock glared. He stood straight and inhaled deeply, "Do you smell that? In the air?"
Rose and I sniffed the air and there was indeed something different in it.
"It smells like metal," I remarked.
The Doctor pointed, nodding. He walked past us towards the alleyway again, "So, Danny Edwards cycled in one end but never came out the other, " he explained and suddenly stopped walking, "There it is again!" He exclaimed, showing us the back of his hand, "Look at the hairs on the back of my manly hairy hand."
"There's that smell again," I made a face as I looked around, "Like a burnt fuse plug..."
"There's a residual energy in the spots where the kids vanishes. Whatever it was, it uses an awful lot of power to do this."
We continued walking down the streets. The Doctor started going ahead of Rose and I.
Rose suddenly turned for a cat. "Aren't you a beautiful boy?" She cooed, reaching down for it.
"Thanks! I'm experimenting with back-combing," The Doctor was quick to respond.
I giggled when he noticed Rose had meant the cat.
"Look Joy," Rose returned with the car in arms. I sneezed. "Isn't he beautiful?" I sneezed and I covered my mouth to sneeze again. "Are you okay?" She asked and the cat jumped off her arms.
"Yes-" I sneezed again.
Rose followed the cat towards a cardboard box, "Come here!"
I sneezed and sneezed, even making the Doctor turn. "Joy, what's the matter?" He walked over to me. He placed a hand over my shoulder but my continuous sneezing eventually shook it off.
"Doctor!" Rose called with an urgent tone.
I sneezed one final time again. The Doctor was in a struggle between who he should take care of first. With a hand, I motioned for him to go to Rose.
"Hold on, Joy," he said before running to Rose.
It's not like I needed him anyways; I was quite used to being on my own. And besides, I knew exactly things hadn't changed. I was on the trip for the assignment and distraction, not to be noticed...though it wouldn't hurt as usual.
I looked up to the sky and took a deep breath multiple times, "Stupid cats," I muttered. I could hear the Doctor rambling on to Rose about some iron residue but I couldn't make out the rest. My eyes felt watery and I knew it wouldn't stop unless I had my pills.
Too bad I was kind of far away from home.
"Alright, now what's wrong with you?" the Doctor returned.
"I'm fine now," I said with a scratchy voice.
"Are you sick?"
"It'll pass," I coughed, "Can we just get out of this spot, please? That would be a major help."
He nodded and led us down the street, "I sent Rose looking."
"What for?" I asked, rubbing my eyes.
"For anything, really. I don't know what we're dealing with."
"You know, that metal smell is kind of familiar..." I looked at him, "It's at the tip of my tongue but I can't say it."
"It'll come to you later. Are you feeling better now?"
I nodded, "Yeah, like I said, it'll pass. Although a glass of water could be some good use...and maybe a good distraction."
He chuckled, "I'm good at that!"
"I bet you are," I smiled, going ahead of him, "I think I'm smelling that scent again."
"I was talking to Rose about these little cakes, you know, cause I thought I saw some in the last street," he started to ramble as I sneezed more, "Did you ever hear have one of those little cakes with the crunchy ball bearings on top?"
I sneezed, and felt the scent getting stronger, "Actually..."
"No, but do you know those things?" He continued rambling and didn't listen. This was probably the first time he was talking to me about something he liked. That didn't happen too often. "Nobody else in this entire galaxy's ever even bothered to make edible ball bearings. Genius."
"Yes, but, I think-"
We heard a yell from our blonde companion and so we quickly rushed to go and help her. The Doctor arrived first and when I saw what she was being attacked by, I had to stop and process it.
"Stay still!" the Doctor instructed as he pointed his screwdriver at a ball of scribble. The ball stopped and dropped onto Rose's hands. "Are you okay?" He pulled her up.
"Yeah, cheers," Rose mumbled.
As they hugged, I stood watching with very much intrigue what Rose was holding in her hand. When they pulled back I quickly joined them and took the scribble ball from her.
"Hey!" She frowned but I ignored it and turned the ball over.
"I'll give you a fiver if you can tell me what the hell it is," the Doctor pointed, "Cause I haven't got the foggiest."
"Well, I can tell you you've just killed it," Rose shrugged.
"It was never living. Just animated by energy."
"And I assume it's the same one taking these people?" I asked, my eyes fixated on the ball.
"Correct."
"It's weird," I tilted my head, "I can tell you that this is familiar to me. But I don't know why," I looked up to them.
"Get out of here, you can't think it's familiar," Rose pointed at it, "It's not possible."
"I'm telling you!" I insisted, "It's like...I can't put my finger on it."
"You might be clever but not that much," she mumbled, making my eyes snap at her.
Had she really just said that? That was...rude. And I didn't see Cassandra anywhere which meant she wasn't possessed...
"Well, let's take this into the TARDIS then," the Doctor grabbed the ball and started walking, leaving us behind to have a sort of stare down.
"What?" She asked.
"You tell me," I said, my eyes half-wide as I turned away from her and followed the Doctor.
~0~
As the Doctor analyzed the ball, my mind racked itself for the word I was looking for to identify the similarity I had thought of between it.
"Get out of here!" the Doctor exclaimed as he read from the console's scanner.
"What it say?" Rose asked as he grabbed the ball again.
"Joy, by any chance, does this answer the word you were looking for?" He took out a pencil from his pocket and actually erased a part of the ball.
"Graphite!" I yelled immediately, pointing. "Same thing as a pencil!" I laughed excitedly and clapped my hands. "That's what I wanted to say!"
"You had it way before any of us," the Doctor smiled, handing me the ball to examine, "Maybe you should lead the trips."
"I would," I quickly approved the idea, "And I'll start by saying why make a scribble to attack people if that person or thing has enough power to create something much bigger and stronger? Thoughts, Doctor?" I glanced at him and smirked as he thought. Even Rose was thinking, although she still didn't seem happy and it was kind of getting to me honestly.
"I..." the Doctor said, clearly not having the answer, "Well..."
"It's like a child's drawing," I continued, turning the ball over, "When I made mistakes I'd scribble the heck out of the paper. I still do, actually."
"The girl," Rose suddenly said, her eyes widening.
"What girl?"
"Something about her gave me the creeps...even her own Mum looked scared of her," Rose continued, but to herself more than answering me.
"I don't know what has me more," the Doctor shook his head, "The fact that you figured this out before me," he pointed at me, "Or that you're actually deducting," he glanced to Rose.
"Actually, it's the fact I've done this more than once to you already," I leaned closer to him, smiling sweetly as he frowned at the revelation.
~0~
"Are you sure she'll let us in?" Rose asked as we approached the house of the little girl we had as suspect.
"Why wouldn't she?" the Doctor replied.
"Three strange people wanting to see someone's little girl? Yeah, I'd let them in," I said before knocking on the door.
For the first time, there was no response. The Doctor went ahead and knocked again, slightly louder than I had. A woman suddenly opened up.
"Hello! I'm the Doctor and this is Rose and Joy! Can we see your daughter?"
"No, you can't," the mother replied.
"Okay. Bye," the Doctor surprised me as he turned around and started walking away.
"...Why?" the mother suddenly questioned. The Doctor stopped and turned around. "Why do you want to see Chloe?"
"There's something interesting going on in this street and I just thought...well, we thought, she might like to give us a hand."
"Sorry to bother you," Rose caught on and began backing away.
"Yeah, we'll just let you get on with things...on your own. Bye again!" the Doctor waved.
"Wait!" the mother called, "Can you help her?" She looked so desperate now.
"Yes, I can."
"I'm Trish," the mother greeted as she brought us into the living room, "My daughter, Chloe, stays in her room most of the time. I try talking to her, but it's like speaking to a brick wall. She gives me nothing and just asks to be left alone."
"What about her dad?" I questioned.
"Died a year ago."
"I'm sorry," I said quickly said.
"You wouldn't be if you'd known him."
"Well let's go and say hi!" Rose exclaimed.
"I should check on her first..." Trish was hesitant, already backing for the staircase behind her, "She might be asleep."
"Why are you afraid of her?" the Doctor asked.
"I want you to know before you see her that she's really a great kid. Really, she is."
"I'm sure she is."
"She's never been in trouble at school and you should see her report from last year. All A's and B's."
"Can I use your loo?" Rose stood up. Trish nodded and Rose went off, giving us a slight nod as she walked for the stairs.
"She's in the choir!" Trish continued. "And she's singing in an old folks home. I just want you to know all these things because right now, she's not herself."
I heard some noises in the kitchen which drew me to go. I poked my head inside and saw a little girl by the fridge, which I assumed to be Chloe, "Hello," I waved. She turned around and drank from her glass. "I'm Joy Souza."
"I'm Chloe Webber."
"How are you doing?" I took a step forwards.
"I'm busy. I'm making something."
"I heard you draw some really neat things," I continued, hoping to make small talk, "You know, I draw too. I'd love to see your work...maybe even share ideas?"
"Joy?" the Doctor walked in with Trish.
"Just making a friend," I pointed to Chloe.
"Oh, hello there," he turned to her, "I'm the Doctor."
"Chloe Webber. I'm making something so I must go."
"Wait!" I exclaimed, "If you're drawing something, you wanna show us? We could give you pointers or something...?"
"They don't stop moaning," She suddenly said, looking straight ahead.
"Chloe..." Trish called.
"I try to help them but they don't stop moaning."
"Who don't?" the Doctor asked.
"We can be together," Chloe whispered.
"Sweetheart," Trish walked to her.
"Don't touch me Mum," Chloe snapped, making Trish freeze in her spot, "I'm busy," she spat then walked out.
"But I really wanted to see your drawings!" I called, rushing after her. "C'mon, Chloe!
"Doctor!" I heard Rose call from upstairs.
"Uh oh," I glanced back, "Doctor, Rose needs your help and fast!"
Like light speed, the Doctor went up the stairs with I, Chloe and Trish behind. We entered Chloe's bedroom and saw Rose staring to the closet.
"I'm coming to hurt you!" a roaring voice from the closet yelled.
The Doctor quickly shut the closet doors and turned to us.
"What was that?" I pointed.
"A drawing," Rose answered, "The face of a man."
"What face?" Trish went to reopen the doors.
"No!" Rose quickly barricaded the doors with her body, "Best not."
"What have you been drawing?" Trish demanded from Chloe.
"I drew him yesterday," Chloe replied, not seeming to be bothered by any of this.
"Who?"
"Dad."
Trish frowned, "But he's gone now. With all the lovely things in the world, why him?"
"I dream about him, staring at me."
"I thought we were putting him behind us. What's the matter with you?"
"We need to stay together."
Trish sighed, "Yes we do."
"No. Not you. Us," Chloe corrected, "We need to stay together and then it'll be alright."
"Trish, the drawings," Rose gestured to the wall covered with them, "Have you seen what drawings she can do?"
"Who gave you permission to come into her room? Get out of my house," Trish ordered, seeming angry.
"Tell us about the drawings, Chloe," the Doctor turned to us.
"I don't wanna hear any more of this."
"But that drawing of her dad," Rose insisted, "I heard a voice. He spoke."
"He's dead!" Trish snapped, "And those are kids pictures. Now get out!"
"Chloe has power. And she's using it to take children away. She's snatching them."
"Get out."
"Have you seen those drawings move?"
"I haven't seen anything."
"Yes you have," the Doctor slowly walked up to us, "Out of the corner of your eye."
"No," Trish stared him dead in the eye.
"You've dismissed it, because what choice do you have when you see something you can't possible explain? And if anyone mentions it, you get angry so it's never spoken of, ever ag-"
"She's a child," Trish reasoned.
"And you're terrified of her. But there's no one to turn to because who's gonna believe the things you see out of the corner of your eye? No one. Except me."
"Stop it!" I exclaimed, causing them to look at me. I knew my eyes were watery but I shook my head, hoping to get rid of them quick. "I don't like arguments in front of a child, okay? So either quit this and let us help, or take this down stairs away from Chloe," everyone remained quiet. I looked around, taking in a deep breath. "Now get out."
"Excuse me?" Trish raised an eye brow.
I glanced at her, my watery eyes making her shift uncomfortably. "I'm just gonna talk with her."
She sighed and nodded. My two companions however, did not seem very pleased.
"Joy, I don't think you do this," the Doctor said as Trish was walking out of the room.
"You don't get it. Neither does Rose. Only I do," I said quietly, rubbing one of my eyes.
"What's there to get?"
"Just go downstairs. I know what I'm doing," I snapped and gestured for the door. Chloe looked at me as the three walked out of the room. When Rose closed the door behind them I let out a big sigh. "Chloe..."
She walked towards her bed and sat down, "You're alone."
"I get it. I really do," I walked up to her, reaching for her desk chair and bringing it in front of her, "I know what it's like being afraid of a parent," I smiled faintly, holding up two fingers, "Try two," she stared at me with no response, "Mine never hit me though, I don't know about you..."
"I'm alone," She said, "But we can be together."
"Like...you don't have any friends?" I tried, "Because, I know how that I feels too. I don't really have much friends either...and the ones that I have right now, they don't even know my name," I sighed, "I had one best friend though, and he knew so me well, but..." I looked away, "He's gone now...so I feel alone again. Is that how you feel? Plain alone?"
"You are alone," she said, coldly, "Your people are gone."
'Yeah..." I faintly smiled, "...I have a lost some."
"We can be together."
"Yes, we can. Everyone can be," I agreed, "But, you have to tell me what's going on. I may not be much of a help but...one of the people I'm with...he can help you."
She pulled her legs up and crossed them. I believed that would be all I'd get out from her. Although I don't think I got much to start with. The door opened and I glanced to see the three coming back in.
"What did you do?" Trish quickly demanded.
"Nothing," I replied quietly, "Just talked."
"I think it's my turn," the Doctor walked to us.
I stood up and brought Chloe's desk chair back to her desk. I looked back and saw him placing his fingers on Chloe's temples. A few seconds later, she fell back on her bed with her eyes shut.
"I can't let him do this," Trish began walking to us.
I joined her and moved her back to where Rose was, "It's okay, just trust him."
"Now we can talk," the Doctor stood straight.
"I want Chloe. Wake her up. I want Chloe," Chloe was whispering but I didn't think it was her that was speaking.
"Who are you?" the Doctor asked.
"I want Chloe Webber!"
"What've you done?" Trish cried, frantically.
"What is it?" Rose asked.
"I'm speaking to you," the Doctor continued, walking around the bed, "The entity that is using this human child. I request parlez in compliance with the Shadow Proclamation."
"I don't care about shadows or parlez," snapped 'Chloe.'
"So what do you care about?" the Doctor asked.
"I want my friends."
"You're lonely, I know. Identify yourself."
"I am one of many. I travel with my brothers and sister. We take an endless journey. A thousand of your lifetimes. But now I am alone and I hate it. It's not fair and I hate it!"
"Name yourself!" the Doctor ordered.
"Isolus."
"Oh..." the Doctor breathed, "You're Isolus. Of course."
"Our journey began in the Deep Realms when we were a family," 'Chloe' began drawing on a paper beside her but not needing to open her eyes for it obviously.
"What's that?" I asked.
"The Isolus Mother, drifting in deep space. You see, she jettisons millions of fledgling spores; her children. The Isolus are empathic beings of intense emotion, but when they're cast off from their mother, their empathic link, their need for each other, is what sustains. They need to be together. They can't be alone." the Doctor looked to the drawing.
"Our journey is long," 'Chloe' continued.
"The Isolus children travel inside pods individually. They rid the heat and energy of solar tides. It takes thousands and thousands of years for them to grow up."
"Thousands of years just floating through space?" I raised an eye brow, "Don't they get bored?"
"We play," 'Chloe' answered my question.
"You just...play?"
"While they travel, they play games. They use their ionic power to literally create make-believe worlds in which to play."
"In flight entertainment," Rose remarked.
"Helps keep them happy. While they're happy, they can feed off each others love. Without it, they're lost."
"So they need love to survive," I smiled.
"One more thing we have in common," 'Chloe' spoke.
My smile faded, "Okay..."
"Why did you come to earth?" the Doctor inquired.
"We were too close," 'Chloe' began drawing on a new paper.
"That's a solar flare from your sun. Would've made a tidal wave of solar energy that scattered the Isolus pods," the Doctor studied the drawing.
"Only I fell to Earth. My brothers and sisters are left up there and I cannot reach them. So alone."
"Your pod crashed...where is it?" the Doctor asked.
"My pod was drawn to heat..." 'Chloe' answered, "And I was drawn to Chloe Webber. She was like me. Alone. She needed me and I her."
The Doctor stroked Chloe's head, "You empathized with her. You wanted to be with her because she was alone like you."
"I want my family. It's not fair."
"I understand," the Doctor nodded, "You wanna make a family but you can't stay in this child. It's wrong. You can't steal anymore friends for yourself."
"I am alone."
A sound from the wardrobe made us turn around, "I'm coming to hurt you," that same voice roared, "I'm coming."
"Trish, how do you calm her?" the Doctor asked rapidly as Chloe began jerking about. "When she has nightmares, what do you do?"
"I...I..." Trish hurried to her daughter, "I sing to her!"
"Then start singing!"
"Chloe...I'm coming," Chloe's dad warned, "Chloe...Chloe..."
Trish began singing to Chloe but the banging on the closet wouldn't stop. Slowly, it began to dissolve. Trish became in tears as she hugged her daughter. "He came to her because she was lonely..."
When everything became calm we left Chloe in her room, fast asleep. We walked downstairs to the living room where Trish began picking up every pencil lying about.
"I thought it was over..." She said, picking up a few pencils from the floor, "When Chloe's dad crashed the car, I thought we were free."
"Did you talk to her about it?" I asked.
"I didn't want to," Trish looked down.
"Trish, that's why Chloe feels so alone," I said, walking to where she stood, "If there's no one to speak to...you feel alone," I looked down, "No one to hear what you feel..."
"Her and the Isolus...two lonely kids who need each other. It's so desperate to be loved. It's used to a pretty big family," the Doctor said.
"So it's gonna keep pulling kids in," Rose shook her head.
I felt sad for the little creature. Maybe in a way, we were the same. But just like I got my help, so would it.
"We need to find that pod," I announced.
"But it crashed," Rose said, "Isn't it destroyed?"
"It's been sucking in all the heat it can," the Doctor reminded, "Hopefully that should keep it in a fit state to launch."
"Then let's go!" I exclaimed, rushing for the doors.
"It must be close. It should have a weak energy signature that the TARDIS can trace. Once we find it, we can stop the Isolus," the Doctor looked around the streets, "Let's get to work!" he rushed off.
"C'mon, Rose!" I pulled her away as she had gotten distracted with something.
We caught up with the Doctor and entered the TARDIS. As he worked, Rose and I fiddled around the console, not really having any other purpose for the moment. But, while she stood across from me around the console, I kept trying to think of a reason as to why she was suddenly so different around me. But I couldn't think of anything! I don't consider myself a white dove but I hadn't been rude or anything...
"You know, Joy, I'm impressed you knew the Isolus was lonely before it even said anything," the Doctor said as he worked, bringing me out of my thoughts, "Almost like you knew what it felt."
"Funny..." I said quietly, ignoring his eyes that were on me and silently questioning the reason.
"I knew it was lonely too. But, that's normal. I know what it's like to travel a long way on your own. But...you?"
"Well...that's...that's just coincidence."
"Is it?" he eyed me as he walked to the chair beside the console. Rose joined him and helped him with whatever he was building in his hands.
"Yes..."
"You know what I find very interesting?"
"What?"
"The way you ordered us out of Chloe's room like you owned the place. Impressed, don't get me wrong. But the way you looked at us...like we were doing something ungodly."
'I just don't like arguments in front of children."
""Did you have that around as a kid?" He asked.
"...no," I said quietly, "I've seen it but...no."
He didn't believe me, that was obvious but he let the subject go, "Well, hopefully with this thing, we can get the Isolus back home."
"If you ask me it sounds more like a tantrum," Rose shook her head.
"You were a kid, Rose." I reminded, faintly smiling.
"Yes! And I know what kids can be like. Right little...terrors."
The Doctor stood up and walked to the console, "Gum, please," he held out his hand to Rose.
She spit her gum into his hand which he then used on the device. "I've got cousins, and they can't have their on way. That's being part of a family."
"What about trying to understand them?" the Doctor asked, sticking the gum into the device.
"Easy for you to say," Rose walked to the chair, "You don't have kids."
"I was a dad once," he replied absently.
Rose dropped to the seat, eyes wide. "What did you say?"
I admit, I had to stop and process that one too. Of course, it didn't bother me as much as it did to Rose. I moved beside him and peered down at the device.
"I think we're here!" the Doctor exclaimed, "Now then, this Isolus doesn't want to conquer or destroy the world."
"It's just lonely and wants to get back home," I smiled.
"There's a lot of things you need to get across this universe," He continued, "Warp drive...wormhole refactors..."
I looked around and realized the idiot had missed a blinking, flashing screen. I pointed to it but he kept rambling on.
"You know the thing you need most of all? You need a hand to hold," he glanced over and saw my hand which he took into his with a big smile.
I giggled and pointed to the screen, "No, I meant look over there, you idiot."
"Oh..." He looked down to the screen, "It's the pod!"
"Is it in the street?"
"Yes!" he grabbed the device and ran to the doors.
I looked back at Rose, going to tell her we should follow but instead found her directly glaring at me. She stood up and marched up to me, thinking she'd probably do something but then pushed past me towards the doors. I turned around and watched her leave. I sighed and threw my head back, looking up to the ceiling, "You're alive," I gestured to the TARDIS, 'Can you tell me what I did?" There was a faint wheezing sound, causing me to chuckle, "Now if only I could understand you," I headed for the doors.
"So it's about two inches across. Dull grey, like a gulls egg. Very light," the Doctor was explaining when I had caught up.
"So the pods travel from sun to sun using heat?" I questioned, moving ahead of him. "And that's why it was attracted to a heated part around here?"
"Wouldn't that mean the pod needed just heat then?" Rose added, closely following me for some reason.
There was a crash behind and when we turned we saw the Doctor's device broken into pieces on the ground. What's worse, the Doctor had vanished!
"Doctor?" Rose called.
"Rose," I tugged on her arm, my finger pointing to the now-vanished TARDIS ahead.
"Oh no..." she whispered, "Brat tantrum," she muttered then dashed to the Webber's home.
We pounded on the door like our lives depended on it. Trish opened but didn't get a word out before Rose pushed past her to the stairs.
"It's okay! I've taken all the pencils off her!" Trish called after her.
"I don't think you did," I said, following Rose.
Rose burst into Chloe's room and ran to her desk, snatching Chloe's newest drawing.
"Leave me alone!" the Isolus now demanded, "I want to be with Chloe Webber! I love Chloe Webber!"
"You have to bring him back!" I exclaimed.
"No."
Rose let the paper go and grabbed Chloe's shoulders, "Don't you realize what you've done!?" She yelled, "He was the only one who could help you, now bring him back!"
"I love Chloe Webber."
"I know," Rose sighed, "I know..." She looked down to the paper and picked it up, "Doctor, if you can hear me, I'm gonna get you out of there. I'll find the pod," she looked up at us, "Don't leave her alone. I'm gonna go find the pod." she rushed out.
I sighed, looking at Chloe, "He was gonna help you."
"I could draw your people. Make you be together again."
"Can you just stop?" My voice broke, "No matter what you say or do will bring back my best friend or my family. Everyone's mad at me and I don't want to see them. So please, have pity on me and just stop," I walked out as well, close to tears again.
I sniffled quietly, wanting so bad to be alone myself. But I had to go and help Rose. I walked out and saw her speaking to one of the road workers. She was picking at the newly fixed pavement so I knew she was finding the pod.
"I found it!" She exclaimed, looking up, "Joy I found it!" I smiled as she rushed back, "Look," she held up her hands.
"That's great! C'mon!" I pulled her back inside.
"Trish! We've found it!" Rose exclaimed, "I don't know what to do with it but maybe the Isolus will just hop on board." Trish sat on the couch. "Hang on, I said not to leave her alone!" Rose's eyes widened.
My God. Em...what's going on here?
The TV suddenly became audible to our ears.
The worker Rose had taken the axe from came marching into the house. "I don't care if you've got Snow White and the Seven Dwarves buried under there, you don't go digging up-"
"Shut up Kel, and look!" Rose yelled and pointed at the TV.
The crowd has vanish! They're gone...everyone. Thousands of people have just gone. Uh...right in front of my eyes. But this is impossible!
"That stadium won't be enough," I shook my head, "The Isolus has four billion brothers and sisters. We're in trouble."
"Chloe!" Rose yelled, running for the stairs, "Chloe!"
We rushed up and found the door unable to open. "Chloe open up!" I pounded on the door. "We have your ship! We can send you home!"
"Chloe!?" Trish joined in.
"Back up you two," Rose instructed then with her axe, crashed down the door. She stuck her hand in the hole of the door and opened it for us.
As soon as we got inside, Chloe's 'Dad' was yelling from the closet. Chloe was busy drawing what looked like the planet on her wall!
"We've gotta stop her!" I pointed.
"If you stop Chloe Webber I will let him out," the Isolus warned as the closet doors rattled, "I cannot be alone. It's not fair."
"Look!" Rose held out her hands with the pod, "I've got your pod!"
"The pod is dead."
"It only needs heat!"
"It needs more than heat."
"It needs love," I whispered, "Doesn't it?"
Because when someone is or feels alone...all you need is love to remind you that you are never alone. Platonic or not, you need it.
"I don't..." Rose looked around, desperately, "I don't know..."
"But I do," I snatched the pod from her hands, "Because I understand," I looked at everyone for a moment. "And while I'm gone, you might want to check the drawings."
"Why?" Rose asked.
"Because I think they just moved," I nodded then rushed out. I looked around the street and saw a crowd at the end. "The torch was the symbol of hope, fortitude, courage...and love," I recited Sarah Jane's story, recalling the short story she had given to me as an example before taking the school's assignment, 'And that's exactly what I'm looking for." I smiled, dashing towards the crowd. I pushed myself towards the front of the crowd but was stopped by a policeman. "I've gotta get closer!"
"No way," he shook his head.
I groaned, "Moron!" He gave me a dirty look but I didn't care. The pod chirped in my hands and so I backed out from the crowd and turned my back on them. "You felt it, didn't you?" I asked it, bringing it closer to my mouth. "I understand you. Believe me. And here's my help: Feel the love," I whispered then threw the pod into the air. When I saw it rush to the torch, I jumped up and down in excitement. "Yes!"
One by one I saw all the children that had gone missing materialize on the street.
"Now then, where would that alien be?" I looked around, remembering where he had disappeared but not finding him. "But everything came back to life...all the drawings..." I started blinking rapidly with realization, "Hold up..." I turned around, "Everything came to life. Oh my god..." I ran back to the Webber's home as the thought of the closet returned to my head. I arrived but found the door shut. "Rose! Trish! Chloe!" I pounded on the door.
"The door is stuck!" Rose shouted, pounding on the door. "Where's the Doctor?"
"Uh..." I looked around, "He's not here..."
"WHAT?"
"Not important right now, sorry," I looked for another way in. I could hear Chloe's dad advancing to them.
"Help us!" Trish yelled, "Please!"
"It's not real!" I yelled, "Rose, tell them it's not real! It's just because they're so afraid of him! Rose!"
And she did. I could hear but I could also hear Chloe's Dad and he sounded much closer. Suddenly, I heard singing...? They were singing!
"Keep singing!" I yelled.
Boy I could really use Rose's axe right now.
When everything died down, the door finally opened and out came Rose.
"Are you okay?" I asked but her only answer was a silent nod.
She walked past me and into the streets, to which I assume she would be looking for the Doctor in. While we didn't work together, we had both went looking for the Doctor only to come up with nothing. We returned to the Webber's in defeat, hoping he'd be there instead.
"Nothing?" Trish asked when we returned.
I shook my head and took a seat on the couch, "Kinda hoping he'd turn up here..."
She smiled and turned the television on where the Olympics were being broadcasting again. Everyone had returned to the stadium and it was as if nothing had happened.
"Eighty thousand people, so where's the Doctor?" Rose whispered, "I need him."
I looked at her and saw she was almost going to cry, only adding to the tension we felt.
"Chloe?" I sighed, turning to her, "You think I can borrow a pen and a paper? I have to do some school work," she stood up and went for the things.
The torch bearer seems to be in a bit of trouble. We did see a flash of lightening earlier which seemed to strike him...um, maybe he's injured...he's definitely in trouble.
Definitely. He just collapsed.
Chloe returned with a pen and a journal. I smiled, taking it into my hands, "Thank you," I looked back to the TV as I placed the journal on my lap, "Guess I better get started."
Does this mean that Olympic Dream is dead?
"Joy, look," Chloe pointed. I looked up and saw the Doctor on the TV screen running with the torch in hand,"It's him!"
There's a mystery man, he's picked up the flame...we've no idea who he is...he's carrying the flame, yes! He's carrying the flame and no one wants to stop him!"
It's more than a flame now, Bob. It's more than heat and light.
"It's hope, courage and love," I smiled and looked down, beginning to write.
It was night by the time I had finished the article. The people were out in the streets, celebrating, including Rose who had been dragged out by Trish and Chloe. Once I had properly finished, I left the Webber's house and hurried into the streets to go find the TARDIS and type it up. Of course, at the whiff of a dessert, I had to stop and find its source. I found a table and saw it was filled with small cupcakes.
"Oh..." I said, taking a deep inhalation of their scents.
"You can have one," a woman said, coming up behind the table.
"Don't mind if I do," I grinned and took one of them off the table. I turned and began walking again, getting ready to take a big bite out of my dessert when I saw the Doctor across the street. "Hey!" I called, making him turn around. "You are in so much trouble you ridiculous alien!"
"Annoying, clever girl," he strolled right up.
I mock-glared for a minute before holding out my cupcake, "I might be those things but I listen to you."
Hopefully he'd start doing it as well...
He became ecstatic with it and took it right off my hand, "Top banana!"
I nodded, "Yup!" He took a big bite out of it, causing me to chuckle, "Do you like it?"
"Mm. I can't stress this enough. Ball bearings you can eat - masterpiece!" He exclaimed.
"Ridiculous, banana-loving alien."
"You have got to stop that," he mock glared and took another bite.
"Stop what?" I asked innocently.
"That," he pointed.
"I have done nothing except bring you your cupcake, so quiet." I said, pointing right back.
"What's that?" He looked down to my paper I held.
"It's my article," I waved the paper, "See?"
He took it from me and read it, "This is brilliant!"
I chuckled, "You think so? I wrote it in the heap of the moment!"
"You're an excellent writer, Joy!"
"Thanks, I dabble, I dabble."
"Do you also dabble in saving the world?"
"What?" I raised an eye brow.
"I know what you did. Once again, I owe you a thanks," he smiled.
"Thank you for bringing me here. Believe it or not, it actually did help me," I said quietly, "I hope Mickey lives a good life."
He nodded, "And he hopes the same for you," I swallowed, my eyes slightly becoming teary, "Oh, none of that," he pulled me for a hug which I immediately retreated to.
It reminded me of our last hug before he had taken Mickey along. He never did ask me what made me cry. But for that one split moment, I didn't think he was doing it to ignore me...he did it to avoid more pain. For once, he thought of me and did something to help. It wasn't the kind of help where he saves my life, but one that a friend would do...
"I'm gonna miss him," I sniffled and pulled back, "But I know he's going to be so happy and that makes me happy." I saw Rose coming up from across the street and looking directly at us. Wanting no problems, I backed away from him.
"What are you doing?" He frowned.
"Um...Rose," I pointed past him, "She's been kinda worried."
"Oh..." He glanced over his shoulder and she immediately smiled.
"I'm gonna go back to the TARDIS," I announced, "Have fun."
"Oh, Joy, wait," he grabbed my arm and pulled me back, "It's a night for celebration."
I looked at him then at Rose who's smile was faltering. Finally donning on me, I smiled, "I think I'll be better in the TARDIS," he didn't seem convinced as I released myself from his grasp, "I'll just wait over there," I turned around and walked towards the direction Rose was coming from, ignoring her glares, "Oh, Joy, you're such an idiot," I said to myself as I walked farther away.
She was jealous.
~0~
I was just about to open the TARDIS doors when Chloe came around and leaned against it with a smile, "Hey!"
I smiled and desisted from the doors, "Hello, feeling better now?"
She nodded, "I remember what you said back there...in my room."
"I said a lot of things, Chloe. Gonna have to be more specific."
"You said you were alone...like me."
It took a lot in me not to stop smiling for her sake, "But you're not. You're gonna make friends and be the great little girl you are!"
"What about you?"
"What about me?"
"You said you didn't have friends."
"Well, I have two," I corrected, but then I remembered Rose and thought I should reconsider the amount now.
"But they don't know you."
I sighed, "Maybe one day they will..."
"What's your name?"
"Joy."
"No, I want to be your friend. What's your name?" She grabbed my hand and looked up at me.
I smiled softly, touched by her gesture, "...Minerva."
She smiled back and gave my hand a small squeeze, "Thank you, Minerva."
On The Hill
A/N: This is LITERALLY one of the most interesting things i’ve ever read. My Co wrote this based off of her love for political angst/dramas, and honestly, it’s really good guys, TOTALLY WORTH THE READ. We hope you enjoy this little piece by Momo (@sailor-baek )
Characters: Park Seonghwa (ATEEZ) & Reader (Y/N), featuring another ATEEZ member!
Theme: Political AU, angst, love affair, political drama
Nothing comes easy when you work for the President of the United States. Especially when it involves Park Seonghwa.
💥Warning: Angst💥
The processional march was colorful noise in your ears as you followed closely behind the big man. It got older every time you heard it, which was, quite regrettably, every first Friday of the month. Really, anything would be better than the obnoxious blaring of-what was it? An oboe? You had no idea but it sure didn’t sound like the Chopin Nocturne op.9 no.2 you had to turn on every night to sleep.
“You’re doing it again.”
You didn’t even remember getting on the floor, a communications intern behind the press caucus chuckled. Carrie Ann. George Washington University undergrad and poli-sci masters at the good ‘ole Harvard. You made a mental note to fire the little shit as soon as this thing was over. Your attention turned to the man, still waiting for a complete introduction at the podium.
“Doing what, sir?”
“That frown thing with your eyebrows. You’re gonna get wrinkles, Y/N. What was that cream thing you use? You better stock up before Big Pharma gets their hands on the patent or I’ll have to call you...what is that new movie with Oprah?”
“A Wrinkle In Time, sir.”
“Yes, that one! A wrinkle-”
“It’s a childrens movie; nothing to do with premature aging, sir.”
A little huff escaped his lips and a slight tug appeared on yours. The press secretary was clapping now signaling for your boss to give his address.
“I’m sure your daughter will be happy to watch it with you tonight. Mr. President, you’re up.”
“Ah yes, it appears so.”
You watched as he made his way up to the center; flurries of camera flashes turning the west wing corridor into a light show. This is the time when you would check out. His speech was solid, you had looked it over yourself the hour prior. Today, however, there was a particular bump in your paved smooth travel down the hill. A rather large bump, by the name of Park Seonghwa. He was standing to the right behind his Prime Minister with the cheekiest smile plastered across his face. Bilateral economic relations didn’t warrant this kind of happiness, it oozed off of him like fucking honey. You had heard your greenies gushing over him earlier that day. The hot speech writer from the embassy. Why was he even here? Stupid question, you knew it was because he was Prime Minister Cho’s nephew. Nepotism at its finest. You had to use that one later. It would definitely sting. When clapping resumed again you made your way to the podium to rally the cameras back into the hall.
“Coverage of the reception will be permitted. I’ll have the details sent over via secure line. Until then please wait in the briefing room for further instruction. Thank you, everyone.”
You turned the corner still trying to shake that stupid smile from your mind when Carrie Ann caught your eye at the coffee corner. Before you could stalk all the way over, someone called your name.
“Ms. Chief of Staff...sir?”
God, you had forgotten your interns had project due today. “One sec, hun.”
You pivoted straight into a paper cup of coffee. “You look like you wanted to, um, talk to me.”
“Carrie Ann, do I amuse you.” The cup was warm in your hand now; sickly sweet aromas filling your nose. A little sip of the searing liquid confirmed your suspicion, too much liquid sugar. The poor girl had gone white.
“More specifically, my face-does it...does it make you want to laugh in a room of every major news outlet in the Pacific?”
“No ma’am, I didn’t mean to-”
“But you did.” You took a longer sip and gave her one last canvas before turning back to the little crowd that had gathered. “This coffee is wonderful by the way. Just a little suggestion, though; go easy on sweetener. You’ll need to remember that when you start at the local Starbucks.” You relished the gasps all the way to your office. It wasn’t until someone cleared their throat that you remembered you weren’t alone.
“Shitty morning, my greenies. Tell me something that won’t make me want to throw you off of the east wing balcony.” A lazy finger point at the intern that had tapped your shoulder earlier opened a flood of updates.
“The KORUS coverage just hit air and it’s already trending on Twitter and Facebook.”
“Washington Governor Townsend has agreed to the state park expansion plans in Olympia; we should have the contractors’ bids on your desk no later than noon.”
“The writer guy is waiting in your blue room, ma’am. Said he has an appointment.”
Messy papers were strewn all over your desk; draft bills for POTUS to look over and countless testimony from the bane of your existence that was the municipal aide fund. You didn’t even look up. “I know plenty of writers, Joshua, you need to be more specific.”
“The hot one, ma’am. Tall, Korean, windswept hair look-”
“You need not go on, dear, this is the White House, not a middle school cafeteria. Send him in.”
The group trudged to the door. “Wait. I want all of you to finish up those Arbor Day submissions from the kindergartners. Pick a winner too.”
“The criteria, ma’am?”
“I don’t know, pick one that colored the trees unrealistic colors. I support impressionism and nothing says ‘Happy Tree Day! Thank you for the oxygen!’ more than a purple ficus.”
“Got it, ma’am, purple ficus.” You shoo-ed them off with the hope that the president would get a chuckle from handing a five-year-old artist a certificate for a periwinkle disaster on national television.
“That girl from earlier. I passed her crying on the way here; such a harsh way to be let go.”
You scoffed, “I might just call secret service to drag her out. Why are you here, Mr. Park? You didn’t have an appointment.”
Seonghwa sauntered to your desk, unbuttoning his suit jacket while easing onto the varnished oak and cocking his head to the side, “Hm…” he grabbed the bow cascading down your blouse, rolling the silk in his fingers, “I never imagined something so frilly on someone so…”
“So what?”
He glared down at you, dropping the bow and retracting his fingers, grabbing the pocket square out of his suit, “So… disdainful.”
You smiled unevenly, “Sometimes I wonder where you learn words like this, but then I remember you went to college here and I can’t one up you with pretentious vocabulary.”
A smile spread across his face, “Do you want it in Korean? 경멸적인.”
“Why should I respect you, Seonghwa? I’m the White House Chief of Staff; not the eager college girl that gets you a cream cheese bagel in the morning.”
The way he got under your skin was criminal. Bad enough that he still hadn’t answered your initial question. What was the question? You were getting too old for this. “Your speech on NATO was cute; Prime Minister Cho did well for the press.”
“Did you like it?”
“Oh, I did. In fact I have a particular word in mind to describe it.”
“What would that be?”
“쓰레기.”
“Ah! She knows Korean now; such a dynamic personality.” His index finger tapped against his palm, “First off, we have a condescending Chief of Staff, who, with no mercy or remorse, loves to fire her perky college interns. Second, she must be achingly smart because she dragged my Korean speech-”
“I’ll stop you right there. Perky? Not exactly the word I’d use to-”
Seonghwa stood, readjusting his suit, “Let me finish, Y/N. Finally, for someone so beautiful, you sure do have a terrible temper.”
“You came here to be an asshole; is that it?”
“Takes one to know one, ma’am.”
“You’re the one that called it a dynamic personality.”
He paused, clasping his hands together, “I simply came to ask if I’d be seeing you at the party tonight.”
“To gawk at your latest arm candy? Don’t count on it.”
◎
The Secretary of Commerce had always rubbed you the wrong way. From the beginning of the appointment, green shadows in his hollow eyes had made his motive clear. Sure, the trade renewal was beneficial to everyone. It was especially so to one certain senior official that had poured half the budget into the Korean subsidiary of a Chinese chemical manufacturer. You weren’t a god, neither was the president. The things that were sacrificed in the name of universal well being wouldn’t keep you up at night. Besides, the geezer talking your ear off had to pay for his estate in Great Barrington somehow. You felt a hand slip around your waist.
“It was a pleasure, Mr. Secretary. Congratulations on the agreement.”
Pulled away without much more than a nod in his direction you turned your attention to your companion. “How did you know I was dying of boredom?”
“Y/N, dear, you wear your heart on your sleeve. It couldn’t have been more obvious if you had screamed ‘insolent plutocrat’ in his face.”
You gravitated towards the bar and took the cucumber vodka Yunho held out. He was every bit the man your parents had expected; fitting the description a 9 year old you had mapped out and stuck to the fridge. Doctor Jeong Yunho; Chief of surgery at Georgetown, specializing in neurology. How else could you describe Yunho but simply strapping. Heels didn’t challenge his height. His goofy smile never faltered and his bright eyes followed you like a puppy. Walking into any function with him felt like a cold drink laced with ecstasy; only mildly dangerous and the biggest ego booster. He made you feel powerful.
You leaned in to begin a whisper into his ear.
“My my my, what do we have here?” If Yunho was ecstasy, Seonghwa was the dirtiest mephedrone on the black market. That hand found your waist again. The woody scent on Yunho’s lapel invaded your senses. There came a time every woman had to face the music; you hadn’t wanted it to be tonight.
“Mr. Park, I don’t believe you’ve met my fiancé.”
“Park Seonghwa, right? I’m Yunho, nice to meet you, man.”
The newest patron took his hand, giving it a firm shake. “Likewise, Doctor. I assume congratulations are in order.” You cast a sidewards glance to Yunho who was playing idly with the silver band on his finger. The whole ordeal was suffocating.
“So when’s the big day?” Seonghwa’s eyes were on you now, still full of the morning’s mischief.
“End of June; we’ll make sure to send you an invitation.” You scooted a little closer to Yunho, letting his guarding presence hold you upright. A shrill beep sounded from his breast pocket; one that you had heard many times. He cleared his throat a little and reached for the pager. Duty always called. It didn’t matter even if you had just helped to divert a nuclear crisis. If someone had their head cracked open on an operating table, Dr. Jeong would be there to patch them up. You took a long swig of the sweating cocktail and set it down.
“You should go, honey. It sounds urgent.”
He offered you a sheepish smile. Seonghwa just turned to face the bar, sloshing a drink in his hand.
“Multiple trauma crash on the 95. Baby, I’m sorry.” Yunho lightly grabbed out your hands that re-did the buttons of his suit.
“I of all people know that work is work. Don’t sweat it kid. I’ll see you tomorrow night, okay?”
“You’re not coming home?”He met your lips in a chaste kiss.
“I fly to Mumbai first thing in the morning and I still have lots of stuff to do before then.”
Yunho just nodded with understanding and bent down to peck your cheek one last time. “Text me when you land.”
“Will do. Drive safe.” When he was far you heard a snicker come from the side. Rolling your eyes you motioned the bartender over for a refill. It was Bruno tonight. Thank god. He always kept the good stuff on the side for you.
“Work is work, huh?”
“Precisely.”
The brooding man eased towards you slightly, still looking forward. “Are you working me?”
“For what reason would I do that? I have nothing to gain.”
He downed his dark liquid. “We both know that isn’t true.” and with that, he was gone into the crowd of tipsy politicians. Dim chandeliers and the gaudy presentation was suddenly becoming too much. With swift steps you made your way to the president’s table, a pleasant smile plastered on your face.
“Sir, I’m going to head out for the night; lots to do for tomorrow.”
“Of course, Y/N! Send my regards to Yunho on his surgeries. I saw that he left earlier.”
It was that obvious, huh? “I will. Thank you, Mr. President. Congratulations again on the agreement.” With a quick side hug to the misses and last goodbyes, you walked to the back entrance. Your night detail was waiting at the door, purse and coat in hand.
“Evening, ma’am.” You took your purse and got into the car.
“Hello, boys. I’m so ready to sleep.”
“Home, ma’am?”
“Not tonight, Sarge.”
“Of course.”
The ride to the Regis was short. Without much thought you were in your suite; draped in silk and nursing a vintage malt the adorable concierge had given you. And you had tried so hard to not come off as an alcoholic. How disappointing. The door clicked open but you didn’t pay it any attention as you were still enthralled by the itinerary in front of you. A hand pulled the pin out of your makeshift bun sending hair cascading over your shoulders.
“You work too hard, Y/N.”
“I am my work. It runs my life” The humming in your ear made a familiar heat rush to your chest. It flared out down your arms in little tingles.
“This here isn’t work. I think this is something you’re doing all for yourself.”
You reached behind you, bringing lips hard against your own. There was a little cut on the bottom one from a consistent bite the owner was likely not aware of. Sucking on the spot elicited the deepest moan you’d ever heard. Music on par with Nocturne op.9.
“Add selfishness to the qualities of my dynamic personality.”
You turned around in your seat and found a firm grip on your ass pulling you flush against a rattling chest. “He seems like a great guy.”
“Don’t talk about him, Seonghwa.” Stepping off the chair you pushed him towards the bed. He fell onto the plush surface without a sound of protest.
“You definitely have a type. The press would have a field day.”
Settling over the cocky speech writer that had been tugging on the edges of your mind all day was satisfying to say the least. You fit there perfectly; taking everything that was Park Seonghwa in until it made you dizzy. Though not as dizzy as he became when you abused his neck with abandon. You always adored his icy veins threatening to pop in restraint. His hands fumbled at your hip, willing you to move against him. He was too busy getting off to shameless moans of his name in his ear to feel your knee press down hard on his clothed dick.
“If anything gets out to the media, prepare to have this handed over to your uncle on a silver fucking platter.” His breath hitched and you swore the bulge in his pants only grew. You replaced the knee with your hand and used the other to rip open his now wrinkled button down. Your favorite surface. Not as broad as Yunho, but Seonghwa would say the filthiest things to get you to paint trails down his chest until he couldn’t breathe. That’s the difference between your choice of drugs. The most dangerous ones were the most addictive. So when he captured your mouth again, a fresh whimper on his lips, you had no intention of backing up the threat. Seonghwa. Seonghwa. Seonghwa. Pure honey to taste.
“Please, just fucking ruin me, Y/N.”
“I serve at the pleasure.”
Core
Shatter sighed before warping them both
ZM
she shakes off the shock of the warp and glances around the area
Core
The whole place looked of a barren desert, two suns lighting the red sand. “Come on we have to move.”
ZM
"okay" she happily follows
Core
Shatter was clearly uncomfortable being at this place, she kept looking around as they were headed to a rock formation in the shape of an L
ZM
"shatter, chill, there's nothing here."
Core
“Yes there is, dune worms, wildebots, and hive.” She said, quickly getting onto the rocks
ZM
she hops up aswell sitting on a high point of the rock and is very tempted to throw a bomb at the sand to see these creatures.
Core
Shatter quickly looked over at her. “Don’t.” She said with a hiss.
ZM
she pouts and folds her arms. "fiiiine."
Core
“Look, chances are, Killer is in the imperial city, but that’s where the red king and his death heads are.” Shatter explained.
ZM
"and that'sss... bad?"
Core
“Very, very bad.......they are the ones who killed my brother and mother, and my father a few years before that.” Shatter explained, tensing up at the memory
ZM
"ah, alright. but you are stronger now. and you have me! we'll be fine." she tries to find the direction the city would be in.
Core
“Yeah well, still better be careful, I would prefer not to be caught again.”
ZM
ZM
"okay sure, whatever you say shatter" she jumps off the rock and into the sand."
Core
(the stuff from Killer’s eyes can be used as a narcotic, causing hallucinations if entered in the blood stream, Killer is immune to it though.) A large worm, about 50 feet long, came out of the sand, its mouth was like that of a lamprey.
ZM
chara is impressed by the critter though a bit intimidated. before it could try to attack she hopped back up to where shatter was. "uuuuh so how do you plan on getting there?"
Core
Shatter growled at the fact that Chara woke one up. “Walking.”
ZM
chara can't help but laugh at shatter's disapprovle "you can fly can't you? you can do everything."
Core
“If I do that, we’ll get spotted.” Shatter explained. “Our best bet is to lay low and act like visitors.”
ZM
"visitors can't fly?"
ZM
"hm, well be that as it may, how long do you think it'll take them to leave us alone so we can start walking again?"
Core
“We can go now.” Shatter said. Hopping down.
ZM
chara stays up top watching shatter, not convinced that they're gone
Core
Shatter was walking, nothing attacking her. “Come on.”
ZM
"mmmmmmmm" she mumbles and saves with the determination to get to their destination. she slides down and catches up to shatter.
ZM
she watches as the sand slowly moves up and down like it's breathing. she starts to cling to shatter.
Core
“Take it easy, they can sense stress.” Shatter whispered
ZM
"they're huuuuge shatter!" she whispers back upset. "i can't see why we can't go another way."
Core
“Because then we would get caught.” She whispered with a slight hiss
ZM
"they're like... as big as a wailord. and i don't like fighting things i can't see"
Core
“We can’t start a fight, ok? They are harmless as long as you don’t spook them.”
ZM
"they said the same thing about alligators but you better believe i'm not gonna go swimming in a river full of them." she feels the ground below her heave up and she instantly jumps onto shatter's back wrapping her arms around her neck and legs around her torso to keep her there. "oooooh myyy goshshhhh" she whisper-screams
Core
Shatter sighs. “Why are you such a baby?”
ZM
"shut up! i'm like 12"
Core
Shatter looked at her. “Oh.”
ZM
"yeah." she frowns a little bit. "well, unless you want to count the years i was dead but i mean come on. i wasn't conscious." chara keeps her eyes on the sand
ZM
still on shatter's back the city is now in view
Core
“I just didn’t think you were so young...” Shatter mumbled
ZM
she moves her head so she can look at shatter better with a confused look. "how old did ya think i was?"
Core
“I dunno, like 14 ish.” She said, her face had a troubled look to it
ZM
"i mean you were close." she pauses. "are you alright?"
Core
“I just.....really, really don’t want to be here.” Shatter said, putting up her hood. As a group of red skinned humanoids walked by
(These peeps)
ZM
chara looks over shatter's head to those approaching. tempted (as usual) to talk to them or mess with them. but knowing how shatter's feeling right now she resists and just stares at them instead.
Core
“Visitor.” One spoke, making Shatter freeze up. ‘Don’t say anything, or I swear to god I will kill you a million times over.’ Shatter said to Chara, clearly stressed.
ZM
chara bites her lip trying to stay quiet but it seemed like the group was expecting an answer so she gave a wave to them instead of talking.
Core
“You are on imperial property, some identification is needed.” The leader of the group said. Shatter thought for a moment. “Veers, Kees star force, 56b-27L.” Shatter replied, obviously hoping they would take the bait, and to make sure she sold the act, she pulled a strange badge from her pocket, showing it to them. They looked it over. “Very well.”
They said before leaving
ZM
chara is almost cackles at how easy that was. 'not bad shatter, or their just stupid haha!' she thinks to olympia
Core
‘Well if it didn’t work, I killed a Kree for no reason.’ She replied, “but it won’t fool the death-heads.”
*’ ‘
ZM
'let's go stealth than, are they going to be waiting at the entrance? land how far is this little hiding space of killer's' she messes with the fabric of shatter's hood
Core
‘Well, chances are she’s hiding somewhere you couldn’t possibly go.....which is exactly where I don’t want to go.’ Shatter pointed to a large coliseum that looked over the buildings. They soon reached the walls surrounding the city
ZM
chara gets off her and starts walking again "looks like a fun place." she looks around the walls sizing them up. 'should we climb or risk it with the entrance?'
Core
“Fuck the entrance, we’re gonna climb.” She said, her hair turning short, messy and purple, Toxin.
ZM
'because jumping the fence is not suspicious at all haha' she goes up to it and starts climbing using purple goo on her hands in case she slips a little.
Core
Toxin used her spines to xclimb. “There’s this old geezer, he owns a warehouse on the other side of this spot, helps peeps escape this shit hole.”
ZM
"or get in i suppose" she gets to the spikes at the top and carefully slides down the other side being hidden by the large building she supposes they're going in.
Core
Toxin hopped down. “I don’t know why the f*ck we agreed to this...” she growled.
ZM
"cause you're my friends. that's why~"
Core
“This is so over the fucking line.” Toxin hissed
ZM
"you agreed to it so stop being a bitch about it hmm?" she points to a back door on the building. "should i knock?"
Core
“Hell no!” Toxin hissed, “come on.” She said, putting the hood up as they walked through some allie ways
ZM
she kicks some trash out of her way as she follows "it's gross back here, i hope the main city isn't this bad"
Core
“It isn’t.” Toxin said, picking up some rat poison that was on the ground and eating it
ZM
"ewww" she groans. "don't do that just cause you can! doesn't that taste awful?"
Core
“Who are you kidding? It taste better than the shit you eat.” She replied, eating the last piece
ZM
"damn toxin, have you even tried chocolate? cause it's literal heaven on earth." a presence from the right is noticed by chara as she slows down a little.
ZM
'who's that' she asks though shes' unsure olympia can hear her wen toxin is incharge.
Core
Toxin looked over. “Shit!” She darted, grabbing Chara
ZM
chara just rolls with it.
Core
The person gave chase
ZM
after glancing back while running she could tell that it was a humanoid but it didn't seem exactly human it's eyes and teeth glowed in the dark of the ally making chara shiver and go back to focusing on running.
Core
Toxin used her spines to make sharp turns, hoping to lose their pursuer.
ZM
"do you have a plan or are we just running!?" chara whines hearing steps of maybe two other people joining the other.
Core
“We need to lose her, otherw-“ one of the people who joined shot a round disk like thing that burnt through the hoodie, tazing Toxin, to the point she passed out.
ZM
when she felt toxin's grip on her loosen and she fell to the floor chara had no idea what she should do. she really didn't want to leave her there to get captured or whatever they were going to do to her. but there's no way she could drag her away...
Core
Another disc shot at Chara, hitting her chest, resulting in the same fate for her
ZM
as chara fell she got nothing but a good look at one of the assailant's shoes. the original attacker watched them both go unconscious before standing in front of them in a guarding fashion as if to say "these are mine, go away" though they were not the one to take the two of them down with the disks.
Core
“Look, you know the law, they belong to the king now, as gladiators.” The one who fired the disks said
ZM
"he doesn't need them." he said hoarsely. it sounded like his voice hurt a lot. he turns to tie the two up and haul them off.
Core
The one who fired glared. “There will be a fee, at least.”
ZM
he sighed "it's not MY fault that you wasted your ammo." he finishes with that and turns to see the other's opinion.
Core
They stayed out of the argument.
ZM
he takes that as it's his and starts to drag them back to the ally he came from. his hood hid most of his face but with his glowing eyes he watched the shooter warily to make sure they wouldn't try anything.
Core
They were walking back to the main streets. Toxin started to stir slightly
ZM
he knew who shatter was, one of the more well known stars. he was expecting to get plenty out of selling her though he did hear of gaster's death there were others that wanted her for other reasons. he really didn't want to use his power on her to keep her down so he waited until she was more awake to do anything. he get's back to his area and pulls up a sewer plate.
Core
Toxin slowly opened her eyes, seeing what as happening, she then made herself spike up, cutting into the male, the spines laced with arsenic.
ZM
as he's stabbed he turns and manages to break off the spines that hit him having toxin bleed some. he pulls them out of him and puts them on his belt. "don't make this difficult" he says to her. he pushes her into the sewer hoping she's too drowzy to do much more right now.
Core
She tried getting to her feet, covering herself with bony plates, waiting for the arsenic to kick in.
ZM
he's been poisoned before and while he feels the effects coming up fast. he assumes it's not anything he hasn't survived before so he pushes chara down straight to her so she'd need to pull the spines back completely to not stab chara. dizziness starts to kick in as he slides down the ropes he tide to the manhole.
Core
Toxins spines were replaced by the plating, meaning she was in more of a defensive mode
ZM
the hooded guy grabs the ropes and drags them though the sewer water nearing his destination. chara's still out like a light while the guy is getting ready to attack shatter but his throat is so sore he's just putting it off.
Core
Toxin stayed defensive, listening closely to footsteps and the sounds around them.
(Toxin was largely inspired by this character)
ZM
as far as others down there it was surprisingly busy. most of them were crowding around one area. the guy rubs his throat with his hand and glances back at shatter. seemingly having second thoughts about what to do with her.
Core
She moved the playing slightly, showing her eyes were burning orange, glaring directly at him.
ZM
he pulls them into an area off the main path were no one would really go and crouches down to shatter's level so he doesn't have to talk loud. "look, i could sell you off the the denominational traders right now who will dissect your soulstone bit by bit to understand how they could possibly work together like they do. they consider you an anomaly and you're worth a lot. who knows what else they'll do to you. i just would like to make an agreement to keep you out of that. are you at all willing?
Core
She glared, but didn’t attack, although it was almost the perfect time to do so, a sign she was listening.
ZM
he nods and glances around for a second. "for you it should be simple. my debtor (or whatever, the person he owes to) is a thieving shark that makes those unfortunate enough to fall into his web be his servants for as long as they can survive. he owns the Colosseum right under the king and he plans on assassinating the king to control the city or some shit." he clears his throat. "i just want him gone." his voice has practically given out compleatly.
Core
She looked over to Chara for a moment. “If you harm her....”
ZM
he shrugs looking at chara "i won't. she'll be just fine when you get back."
Core
Shatter tried to change shape, but got zapped by the disc
ZM
"so? deal?"
Core
“Help me get this disc off, can’t do a clean kill without evidence as a poison type.” She said, agreeing to the deal.
ZM
"cool." he pulls out a type of pill like tracker from his satchel and shows it to her. "this'll explode if you leave the city. it'll also inform everyone under the boss's comand to go and get your soulstone and where it is. so don't do that. swallow it and i'll take the disk off."
Core
“I am not willing to stay in this city forever... how long would the effects last?”Shatter asked
ZM
"bout 2 days"
Core
“Two days?!” Shatter growled. “Fine.” She swallowed the pill before removing the plating to allow him to remove the disc
ZM
he takes out a special tool and the disk comes off like it was nothing.
Core
Shatter turned into a wolf like creature, covered in natural armor. Flames came out of its open mouth. She than ran, getting the scent from the satchel
ZM
the guy rubs his head praying that shatter will get the job done while he watches chara
Core
After roughly an hour or so, the sound of 4 sets of claws hitting the ground, echoed through the sewers (It’s a freybug, known in English as the hell hound, they will reap the souls of anyone deemed evil.)
ZM
the guy sits up expecting to see shatter.
Core
He saw what he expected, the freybug, with his boss’s most treasured ring in her jaws, as well as the finger it was on, though it was charred. She brought proof that she did what was required. (He can be a real ass and be like ‘you earned your own freedom, but not her’s (Chara’s)’ I just think that would be interesting’
ZM
turns out he tagged chara for a Colosseum battle. he already got the money for it. so as he said 'she'll be fine when you get back' she was and she was awake and had no idea she was going be tried to be taken to the Colosseum by anyone who's involved. her match is later that night. the two of them kinda just sat in silence most of the time shatter was gone. when she got back chara jumped up happily. "shatter!"
Core
Shatter nudged Chara, being the size of a dire wolf. Shatter noticed that Chara still had the disk on, shifting back to her ‘default’ form she looked at the man. “Why haven’t you taken hers off?” She asked
ZM
"I didn't want her messing with anything." he says. "plus the tool i used on you is a one time use thing." (that's a lie tho) he shrugs
Core
Shatter glared. “You’re lying.” She said with a hiss, her eyes glowing purple.
ZM
"I'm not" he takes out the tool and hands it to her. it is quite broken but only because he hit it against a rock and shot the springs. he writes down on a piece of paper "if you need another you can always find one at the market."
Core
(I just remembered that you said this place was crowded, so other people know Shatter is here............) “I read your mind, you filthy liar.” She hissed.
ZM
(yep~) he shrugs and writes "the point is still the same. you can't use this one."
(but not everyone will know who she is though, only those who keep up with the hit list and all)
Core
She shot towards him, grabbing him by his throat and slamming him against a wall. “You want me to play dirty again? Then I fucking will.” She hissed. (Well She was a gladiator for around seven years before she escaped, and would have the most kills in the coliseum.)
ZM
he's not all that scared and his mind is pretty blank. the poison making him incredibly scatterbrained and tiered. 'well' he thinks expecting shatter to hear 'do it if you wanna'
ZM
he glances to chara who's kinda confused.
Core
She glared as he burst into flames, she dropped him as his corpse was charred to be unrecognizable.
ZM
the charred pieces hit the floor glowing the same color as his eyes and mouth did. chara shuffled her feet and looks at shatter. "....?"
Core
“What? You think I didn’t know how to kill?” Shatter asked, picking up the tool as she started working on it
ZM
"nah fam. i just never visioned you as the violent type." she goes closer looking at it aswell. "you think you can fix that???"
Core
“Yeah, But the problem is that you are scheduled for a fight in about 2 hours, and I’m not sure how long this will take me....“ shatter sighed, mad at herself for trusting the man in the first place “I can get rid of the disc by other loading it....but based on the nasty scar that left one me, I’m not gonna do that to you.”
*on
ZM
"wait. what? what fight? i'm incredibly out of the loop for someone who was out for an hour or something. let's, let's just-- like, steal one of these things or something?"
Core
“No, too many people, plus guards. Look, here is what I got from the guy’s head.” Shatter started. “You’re going up against a gladiator codenamed ‘moth’, they’re nocturnal and have 73 kills under their name so far.” She explained. “Which means, that you are so f*cked unless I can fix this in time. Also, save points don’t work there, so if you die, that’s it, no more continues or resets.”
ZM
she scoffs "excuse me, how the hell did they manage to block something as rare as save points! what is this place???" she makes complaints that are barely understandable. "fine okayyyyy okay. what's your plan than?"
Core
“Well, either I fix this then we hide for two days....or plan b, which I honestly think you would enjoy....” Shatter sighed, working on the wires.
ZM
"what would that be?"
Core
“Well, I help you in the fight, but not in a way that people would know it was me.”
ZM
her eyes light up "yes! let's do that!"
Core
“See, I knew you would want that one...” Shatter said, looking over at Chara. “It would hurt you though.”
ZM
"i'm fineee"
Core
“Give me your arm.” She said, turning to Chara
ZM
she sticks out her right arm
Core
“No, left, you’re gonna need to be able to use your dominant hand.” Shatter said
ZM
she snirks and switches arms.
Core
Shatter grabbed Chara’s arm, digging her claw in before turning into a plant, it’s roots digging into Chara’s flesh. ‘You doing okay?’
ZM
she winces but nods.
Core
‘Okay, well listen, here’s the plan, I can either paralyze, poison, burn or make this ‘moth’ fall asleep, then you go in for the kill, understand?’
ZM
"yee, paralysis sucks in pokemon and i'm fast so i'ma go for burn. depending on this thing's strength i might not be able to take him out with my attacks. sound good?"
Core
‘Now you got the idea’ she said, turning into a piranha plant
ZM
"hehe, nice." as the plant wrapped around her arm a bit she got ready to leave the sewers. "so what do you say we head to the colosseum and scope out this moth guy?"
Core
‘Up to you I suppose.’
ZM
"well i say we do that than! or we could look for killer, you said she should be at the Colosseum anyway right?"
Core
‘Yeah, there is an underground network under the coliseum
ZM
Chara nods and goes back up to the streets and starts to walk to the big building.
Core
Shatter kept moving around, making sure nothing was going to attack them
ZM
The streets were confusing and huge but they got to the foot of the colosseum in fairly good time. 'So, is there like a secret entrance for the underground network orrrr...?' She asks Olympia
Core
‘Got to the left.’ She replied
ZM
she walks left and follows the wall of the building
Core
There was nothing. ‘Third brick from the crack is loose.’
ZM
she runs a hand over it and pulls at it
Core
It came out, right to an underground hallway
ZM
'ooo, cool' they get down there and it's pretty dark chara uses some fire magic to light the way. there's a few ways branching off where they are so chara waits for instructions.
Core
‘Okay, there are guards in the majority of the paths, except the third to the right
ZM
'k' she kills the light until she gets to the third path and them lights it again.
Core
It was abandoned, the brickwork was all worn
ZM
"hmm," she tries putting pressure on the walls while walking down the hall
Core
Some of the bricks crumbled. Shatter smacked them out of the way
ZM
'nice place shatter,' she says sarcastically
Core
‘It’s been seven years, don’t judge me.’
ZM
she kicks some debris away. 'just keep walking?' she asks
Core
‘That would be recommended. How are you holding up, Venus?’
ZM
'yeah venus' she asks jokingly having no clue who venus even is. she keeps walking but she's getting kinda claustrophobic and bored. she tries to walk to a song beat to keep herself occupied.
Core
The plant shook the dust off its leaves. “I’m fine, just hungry.”
ZM
'you need water or something?'
Core
“No, flesh.” She replied, snatching a rat that scurried in front of them
ZM
... 'i'm starting to have second thoughts about having a carnivorous plant be attached to my body...'
Core
“Look, I’m not gonna bite you, Eunice would fry me.” She replied.
ZM
"mmmmm be eaten and then burned. sounds like a blast." she slows down as she thought she heard an echo of someone else talking
Core
Venus seemed to hear it too, she tried to turn, but was unable, since she was stuck to Chara
ZM
with venus tugging to turn she listens and does the same
Core
Venus swayed side to side slowly, as if taunting whatever she heard, or sizing them up.
ZM
"... hello?" the fire still lit in her hand not really helping her vision
Core
Chara say a woman, with grey skin and black hair, she saw a blade at the end of a staff. ‘That’s Calarie the king’s ‘shadow’. In other words we need to run.’ Olympia told Chara
ZM
'running's for babies. but i did say i'd listen to you while we're here soooo' she she coats her feet in orange and runs down the hall.
Core
Calarie was fast, very fast, she cut Chara off
ZM
chara skids to a stop ripping up some of the ground as she did "haha yooo?" she sets a marker behind her. "i'm just coming through if you don't mind-"
Core
“Kids aren’t allowed here. How did you get in?” She asked, putting her weapon on her back. ‘She never did want to hurt us.... then again we were young than you.’ Olympia said.
ZM
"i just found a loose brick and followed my way down here. i'm just looking for my friend."
Core
“Well, they won’t be here, come on, I’ll walk you o-“ she saw the disc. “Oh...”
ZM
she looks down at the disk then back at calarie. "what?"
Core
“Come on.” She said, offering her hand. Venus kept her head low.
ZM
.... "what if i say no?" she takes a step back
Core
“Then I’ll have to force you, and I would rather not harm a child.”
ZM
"you don't have to treat me like a kid, just consider me a human that you found in this little underground hideaway. here, i'm about to be in one of the cage matches in about an hour. i just wanna find my friend yuma before i get clobbered by this moth guy. alright?"
Core
Calarie sighed. “It honestly makes me feel ill that our king lets children fight. As for your friend, I know where they are.” She said, leading the way. Venus has wrapped around Chara’s upper arm, resting her head on Chara’s shoulder. “We’d be lying if we said we didn’t miss her....” she whispered
ZM
"oh?" she speeds up a little so she's walking by her "you're her friend?"
Core
“Who are you talking to?” Calarie asked Chara, leading her up some stairs.
ZM
"haha sorry no one, i just have dissociative identity disorder." 'i mean that used to be true with frisk so i can say that' she hops up the last step
Core
‘I wasn’t going to say a word.’ Olympia said. ‘And She was more like a mother to us while we were trapped here...’ Chara was now above ground, being led to a overlook
ZM
'aww that's precious.' she gets to the overlook and looks at calarie questioning
Core
She saw Killer talking to a red skinned man who had golden robes. “You know, the townspeople loves watching you fight, you always seemed a step ahead.” He said, sipping some wine. “Yeah well, I’ve been busy, finally able to sleep.” Killer responded, before sensing the two.
ZM
"hey, guess who." she goes up to her.
Core
Killer put her face in her hands. “Are you f*cking kidding me....” she growled. The man chuckled. “This the parasite you told me about?” “Yep, that’s them alright.”
ZM
"damn, you get meaner every day yuma." she folds her arms and looks at the other guy "and who are you supposed to be?"
Core
“I am the king of this world.” He said, Venus growled softly, eager to rip his face off.
ZM
chara pats venus' head gently. "well hello sir. your city kinda sucks."
"or, world, whatever"
Core
Calarie smacked Chara’s head. “Don’t you dare speak to him that way.” “It’s fine Calarie, besides, I see that they are to entertain us tonight.” He said, pointing out the disc. Killer sighed. “Good, let’s hope they die finally.”
ZM
"oh man, you're gonna make me cry" she wipes a fake tear.
Core
“Then maybe you would finally leave.” Killer growled. The red king watched the two, mildly interested.
ZM
"hey," she puts her hands up. "you're the one that met me and started to hang off of me. your own fault that you've got a leach that won't leave you alone."
Core
“I know and I hate myself for it.” Killer said.
ZM
she snickers. she goes up to the over look and sees the Colosseum with a fight in session. the match already looks decided with the looser's blood everywhere but the large minotaur like creature is now playing with the wingged magic user. she looks to the king "are you a sadist?"
Core
“The townspeople love to watch the fights, I simply give them what they desire.” He replied
ZM
"mmmhm. so did you hear your underling got murdered? what if that's you next?"
Core
“No one threatens the kings life, not as long as I can fight.” Calarie said with a hiss.
ZM
she looks to calarie with a smile. "good to know." chara watches the fight more and her soul starts to sink and make hre feel ill at the humiliation that is being put on the looser. "yeah that sure looks like fun to me. as my brother once said 'at least we're better than those sickos that stand around and watch it happen. those pathetic people that want to see it, but are too weak to do it themselves.' just like all these people in the stands."
Core
“Yeah, it always is more fun to do it yourself.” Killer said.
ZM
"at least we can agree on something killz."
chara's disk starts to flash and beep
Core
“You’re still a brat.” Killer hissed. “Come on, it’s your turn.” Calarie said, leading Chara down the stairs. The sun had started to set
Could you comment on kasta tomb? Is the excavation still ongoing? Has there been new discovery/hypothesis/debate? For a while it was all over the news then it fizzled out. Google searche only surfaces old articles. What's the academic consensus, if any, regarding whether it was a dedication to Hephaistion?
Okay, so, for the TL;DR crowd:
1) The excavation is more-or-less on hold due to lackof funding (like a lot of excavations in Greece).
2) No new discoveries for reason 1, plus the usualquagmire in Greek archaeology of access to a site and turf wars. But, thesethings also take time.
3) It wasn’t a dedication to Hephaistion. I don’tknow an academic (outside the excavator’s team) who genuinely believes it was. Attachingit to H. (or any other major figure at ATG’s court) is part of the usualattempt to get media attention (and funding).
Let’s start with #3, which will in turn answer #s 1 and 2.
First rule of archaeology: gold and famous names raise money.It doesn’t matter how important one’s discoveries actually are for the field,it matters how well the lead archaeologists can market what they’re finding topeople/gov’t with funds. Sometimes really good (non-gold) artwork also can beused for attention.
Witness how the archaeologists at Bethsaida (Israel) havehandled the finding of an iron-age stele w the image of the moon god in a “highplace” in the gate. This is *really cool*, given the date (900s?). But do theytalk about its rarity, etc.? Oh, hell, no. The email I got from Rami pointing to anarticle about the find from Israel’s Jerusalem Post announces, “Archaeologists identify citygate from time of King David.”
Famous name! Especially in Israel.
Now, compare: “Large Looted Tomb from Hellenistic Period Foundin Northern Greece,” or “Archaeologists Report they may have Found the Tomb ofAlexander the Great’s Mother/Best Friend/General…etc.” Now, which of those isgoing to get anybody to read the article? :-D
That’s how you get media attention (and hopefully, money tokeep digging, as archaeology is EXPENSIVE). Yet if the claim turns out to bebogus/unsupported, the media attention goes away or can even turn against theexcavator. If/when the first goes down, sometimes the team tries to come upwith other exaggerated explanations to maintain that spotlight, but this canjust dig the grave deeper.
So, why couldn’t this tomb be Hephaistion’s?
First, there are other burials in it—five people to be exact.Were it a monument for Hephaistion, it would be a cenotaph, not a tomb (hisbody was burned in Babylon), and it would be solo, not have other people there.Macedonian Tombs come in two basic types: solo and family. We do have otherfamily tombs (most famously, the Tomb of Lyson and Kallikles, excavated byStella Miller-Collett), and this appears to be similar to that. So attachingthis tomb to Hephaistion faces the immediate problem of, “Uh…other people?”
(Couldn’t they be his surviving family? Well, maybe, but it’sstill really weird. Trying to argue such a thing would be better called “reaching.”*grin*)
The presence of an older woman in (if I recall right) her60s, led some to propose it was Olympias in there—except, again, other people,plus we know (from ancient testimony) that Olympias was buried in Pydna (whereshe was murdered on Kassandros’s orders). So it’s also not Olympias. BothOlympias and Hephaistion are important enough that they’d have merited a solo,not family, tomb. (And most all of Olympias’s family were killed and buriedelsewhere.)
Another name put forward is Nearkhos, one of Alexander’sgenerals, who had land in the Amphipolis area. At least he is a possible candidate,although the tomb might be too late for him (but he sure as hell would have hadthe money for it). Like our Macedonian soldiers, Lyson and Kallikles, Nearkhosmight have sought to establish a family tomb. Again, it’s a reasonablepossibility, just a question of whether the tomb is too late.
Back to Hephaistion (and why it’s not him)…
The argument that it is rests on the presence of some graffiti on stones. First, the graffiti does NOT name Hephaistion (that’s an interpretationby Peristeri and her team). Second, if this were a tomb memorializing such animportant person, why on earth would it be indicated by graffiti?
The graffiti says “arelabon” followed by the letters Eta andPhi (and maybe a sigma?). Peristeri has turned that into “parelabon” and “Hephaistion”:received by Hephaistion. Problem: “arelabon” appears twice, missing thenecessary “pi” in both cases. While missing letters in inscriptions is hardlyunusual, missing the same one in two different places is odd. I’m not going toplay with that further, just leave it for true epigraphers. (I’m aprosopographer, so I deal with epigraphy only occasionally and largely withnames.) What I really want to kick to the curb is the idea that the letters area monogram for “our” Hephaistion.
My current research work involves epigraphical occurrences ofHephaistion, as well as other Hephais-based names in both their Attic-Ionic andDoric forms. Trust me, there are a LOT of names that start with Eta-Phi, evenbeyond Hephais-based names. But even if this meant “Hephaistion” the nature ofthe graffiti itself suggests somebody working on the tomb: an architect,mason, or other craftsman—not the person for whom it was made. We find suchcrafters marks on pottery, bronze, etc. (We also find such etched names on dedicationsin temples, but I don’t think that applies here.)
I think if this was really referencing Hephaistion Amyntoroshis full name would have been given (not a monogram), and it would be a lotmore prominent within in the tomb.
Furthermore—and one of our eternal problems with IDingMacedonian tombs—is that, unlike many figured tombstones (stele), Macedoniantombs usually DON’T name the dead person buried there, even when we suspect theymay portray the dead persons image (like the Tomb of Judgement at Lefkadia).The Tomb of Lyson and Kallikles is unusual. Instead, we get names like the Tombof Judgement, or the Tomb of the Palmettes. The Tomb of Eurydike was calledthat by later archaeologists; there’s absolutely no indication that it belongedto Philip’s mother. It’s almost certainly a woman’s tomb, but that’s about allwe know.
And oh dear, wouldn’t the whole Royal Tomb II at Verginadebate be SO much simpler if there was actually a flippin’ name on the tomb?!There’s not.
Identifying who’s buried in a tomb is REALLY HARD. Itdepends on dating, objects, and probabilities.
So yeah, some craftman’s graffito on the Kasta Tomb means zilch,except that he got his wish and has been spoken of by posterity.
So…trying to turn this into a cenotaph or tomb ofHephaistion is a pile of …wishful thinking. 😉 It’d be cool if it was…but it’s going to takea LOT more evidence to make that claim (not to mention explaining the 5 peoplein there).
Another problem is trying to DATE this sucker.
Those who want to tie it to Alexander more directly are desperateto make it early Hellenistic, despite clues to the contrary ranging fromarchitecture to the gown style of the Karatids. I’m not an art historian, so Iwon’t dig into that. I’ll simply point to one thing I found extremely curiousbut have not seen anyone (yet) address: the use of blue in the mosaic.
Now first, no silliness please about the Greeks not “seeing”blue; that was going around the internets for a while. Yes, they saw blue! Butthe color palette common to painters like Apelles in the late Classical period weremore earth tones. (Again, not an expert. I’m just gonna point to the word ofOlga Palagia, et al. Go and read Olga.) We find these colors in the pebblemosaics at Aegae (Aigai) and Pella, as well as Dion, et al. Even in thebeautiful Persephone painting in Tomb I and Aegae/Vergina.
The first time I saw that BLUE in the Kasta Tomb mosaic, itreally struck me. Unfortunately, art historians tend to catalogue mosaicsby how they’re made, not the colors in them, so I haven’t been able to track thisdown further, except to say that I, personally, have not seen an early Hellenisticpebble mosaic in Macedonia that used blue pebbles. Maybe there’s one hiding ina museum basement somewhere, but these mosaics are pretty spectacular and tendto be shown off. Blue as a color in mosaics is later, showing Egyptian influence.It’s also seen more in tessera mosaics than pebble, which were going out ofstyle by the Roman era. (I think the last datable pebble mosaic is from Delos,1st century BCE—again, Olga.)
So given the use of blue in that mosaic, I’d prefer to see adate that’s mid-Hellenstic at the earliest.
Ergo, we’re probably looking at the family tomb of animportant Hetairos during the Antigonid Dynasty. That’s my best guess.
Incidentally, pointing to the 4th century AmphipolisLion and saying, “Well, it was on top, so the tomb must be 4thcentury!” is horrible methodology. Something stuck on the top of thetomb (which may or may not have been there originally) does not date the tomb. Evenif the lion had been inside, that doesn’t help. Let me explain with an example:
Just because you want to be buried with your great-aunt Bertha’sWWII WAVE wings does not mean that *you* fought in WWII. 😉 It means you were buried with an antique. Sothe presence of the lion means only that the tomb probably can’t date BEFOREthe 4th century lion. That doesn’t mean it can’t date afterit. In fancy archaeologist-speak, the Amphipolis Lion provides only a “terminuspost quem” (earliest date for X), not a “terminus ante quem” (latest date for X).
LXXIV.
May 2019
Harry watched as Isabella played with their sons in the middle of the room. Charlie had been running around before falling forward and getting back up over and over. Bertie had been sitting by her side playing with the ends of his mother’s hair.
“I’m leaving now.”
“Okay,” replied Isabella.
“Where is Mary Astrid?” asked Harry.
“She’s sleeping. Christine is with her in case she wakes up besides Louis is on his way over here.”
“Louis? You invite him when I have to leave for the match? Will he be here before I leave?” asked Harry.
“No. He should be here within the hour. Why do you want to talk to him?”
“Sure.”
“He can stay late today. Gabriel and Noah are in Luxembourg with their mother so it’s just him.”
“I won’t be long so I can come to spend more time you the four of you,” smiled Harry.
“Okay. Bring me something if you can. I would love a jersey,” asked Isabella.
“Of course,” replied Harry as he gave Isabella a kiss on the cheek and kissed each of his children on their foreheads before leaving.
About 10 minutes later, Louis came into the room being escorted by Christine, “Louis! Hello, oh, you just missed Harry. He wanted to say hello before he left.”
“I can stay long enough to say hi to him.”
“I knew you would. That’s exactly what I told him.”
“Where are the kids?” asked Louis.
“All napping. I just feed Mary-Astrid and the boys just got put down to sleep. Give them an hour and they should wake up,” explained Isabella.
“Okay. Then it will just be you and I,” smiled Louis.
“How are you? How are Gabriel and Noah?” asked Isabella as they sat down across from each other.
“I’m fine. Gabriel and Noah have a match next week. It would be amazing if you and Harry could come and bring the kids. They have been really into polo lately. Noah took to it faster than any of us had expected.”
“We will definitely be there. I miss them so much. I know I just saw them at the funeral but they are getting older. I still remember when you announced that Tessy was pregnant.”
“I’ll try and bring them around more often. I thought you would be busy so I just wanted to give you some space,” said Louis.
“Christine has really helped me beyond belief since the twins were born. Now with them getting older and more independent, she has been helping me with Mary-Astrid. I owe that woman so much,” explained Isabella.
“Well, I am here. I heard that Olympia and Jean-Christoph are going to be based in London after the wedding. She could be here and help.”
“I think Olympia will want to start a family of her own. I don’t want to trouble her. But speaking of weddings, I would like to introduce you to someone.”
“Belle, no. I don’t want to get set up with some random girl. I just finalized my divorce a month ago.”
“I know but please just give her a chance. You’ll like her, I know you will!” begged Isabella.
Louis hesitated, “Who is she?”
“My cousin Marie and she’s your age too.”
“Belle, no.”
“Why not? She’s nice, she’s good with kids because I know she helped Rudolf when he started his family. She is a well-educated woman and I know the two of you will get along great.”
“I don’t know. It’s too soon and I have the boys,” paused Louis.
“Just one date! One date could do you good. Honestly, I have good taste in significant others.”
Louis gave another pause, “We both know you don’t but I’ll humor you for trying. One date. That is it, and if there isn’t another one after that then I don’t want you barking at me.”
“No barking I promise.”
“Okay then. I am assuming you’ll talk to Marie for me.”
“Better yet, I can give you her phone number before you leave.”
“Also, what is up with Charlotte and Ferdinand von Habsburg?” asked Louis.
“They are getting very serious, but I know in my heart that Ferdinand is a good man so I don’t have any objections. Why?”
“I was just a year older than her when Gabriel was born. I guess I just worry about everyone. I’m not saying that Gabriel and Noah are a mistake, they aren’t,” started Louis.
“And I would never presume you would think that,” interrupted Isabella.
“Yes, well, I was a kid. Charlotte is a kid. You married too young in my opinion,” joked Louis at the end.
“I was 25 with a career of my own,” argued Isabella.
“Still too young. Now you’re 26 with 3 children under 2 and you’ve only been married 2 years. Don’t you think you could have done something more with a couple more years?” asked Louis.
“Of course I could have but I guess I’m okay with the way things have gone,” answered Isabella.
“I’m sorry for taking the direction of the conversation this way. We can switch. You can tell me how the twins are doing.”
Isabella nodded at the conversation change and thought for a couple of seconds, “Mary-Astrid’ christening is coming up in August and I just finished the list of godparents.”
“Can I see?” asked Louis.
“Sure, let me go get the list.”
Isabella left the room quickly coming back with a small piece of paper. She handed it to Louis who recognized many of the names, “Very packed list of people.”
“After the funeral, I decided that aunt Marie-Gabrielle should be a godparent to her brother’s great-grandchild. I thought he would love it,” explained Isabella.
“He would trust me. Our side of the family really shows in Mary-Astrid's godparents. Marie-Gabrielle, Marie-Christine, and Luisa Maria. Is it going to be at Buckingham Palace?”
“Yes, Buckingham. Since Antonia is my lady-in-waiting she is arranging to get her mother to London. The most effective way is a train but I wanted her to fly. She is more than willing to come, she was so happy to hear from me.”
“What about the twins?”
“They are fine. Growing faster than I imagined. Sometimes it takes a lot to carry one of them,” replied Isabella.
“Perfect health?” asked Louis.
“Beyond perfect. Again, Christine’s help has been amazing.”
“And you?”
Isabella was a bit taken back by that question. She didn’t quite know how to answer. “Well, things are different.”
“Has Harry been helping like Christine?” asked Louis.
“Oh yes. With the both of them helping with the little ones it seems all I do is breastfeed. Harry takes care of playtime and Christine does not shy away from nappies, thank god.”
“I could look after them for a couple of hours so you and Harry could go on a date or something. 3 children under 2 can be stressful,” suggested Louis.
“Thank you for the offer but I have more than enough help under this roof. Thank you for caring about us enough to offer to help in the first place,” smiled Isabella.
Louis nodded before switching the conversation. “Did you hear about Adelaide and Christoph?”
“I did. I video chatted them a couple of days ago. Another baby by the end of the year is such a joy.”
“Maria-Anunciata and Johannes may have a child by the time their first-year anniversary rolls around.”
“Do you think that Maria-Anunciata is moving fast? You said I was,” asked Isabella.
“She is 7 years older than you,” answered Louis.
“So you think age gives you maturity?”
“Well no, you at 10 would make any 30-year-old man shit his pants. You would constantly remind my father of his mistakes by bringing up the actions of our ancestors. You were different.”
“So why did you use the saying ‘too young’ to describe me when you are now saying my maturity puts men three times my age to shame?” asked Isabella.
Louis paused before a small smile crept on his face, “You win this argument, but I have the next one.
They talked for the next hour until the twins had woken up and Louis was more than happy to have play time with them. Isabella would leave every once in a while, to feed Mary-Astrid while Christine would be the one who would take of the baby girl.
Hours of playing and talking had finally tired out Louis who forgot how hard it was to take care of young children. Charlie and Bertie escaped from his grasp one too many times that Isabella had to limit the space in the room and where the twins could go. When the door opened Harry walked through the mess of toys and books to get to his three children.
Mary-Astrid had in the lap of her mother while Charlie and Bertie were being entertained by Louis with a puppet.
“Look it’s papa!” smiled Isabella.
Harry lifted Charlie and Bertie into his arms giving them a kiss as he walked towards Isabella. He greeted his wife and daughter with a kiss and greeted Louis with a nod since his hands were now full with two of his children.
“How was the match?” asked Louis.
“Good. Same as always but the people were extra nice to me. They all asked so many questions about Isabella and the kids,” answered Harry.
“Oh, how did that go?”
“Well I was vague as possible and people were not happy about that. They wanted to know every little detail about the three of them.”
“People will always be invested in their lives,” commented Louis.
“He isn’t wrong. But thank you for being vague. They are just children and I don’t want their personal details being plastered all over the papers,” nodded Isabella.
“So Louis how is everything?” asked Harry.
“Good. The kids are with their mother for a couple of days and then I’m flying out to meet them.”
“Luxembourg I’m presuming.”
“Yes. Are you coming to Cabasson the beginning of June?” asked Louis.
“Of course. I think Alexandra mentioned something about a little thing to celebrate grandpapa. After all, it is the first time we are going to Cabasson since he passed away,” answered Isabella.
“I think Gabriella mentioned something as well. I plan on staying most of my holiday there, what about you and your family?” asked Louis.
“I don’t know. Harry?”
“We could stay for a week or two,” answered Harry.
“Oh and I’ll get to see Johannes and Anunciata since the wedding!” smiled Isabella.
“And Adelaide is pregnant,” added Louis.
“It’s been a slow year, don’t you think?”
“There was two babies, a wedding, and another on the way. I still can’t believe you call that a slow year,” laughed Harry.
“I have a feeling Imre and Kathleen are going to be expecting. They have kids every 2 years and Juliana is almost one,” thought Isabella.
“I would have thought Gabriella and Henri might be next,” added Louis.
“My money is Alexander and Luisa,” added Harry.
“Look at you already betting who’s going to have a baby next. It’s official, you’re part of the family,” joked Louis.
“Alexander and Luisa are still newlyweds and clearly in love. Choosing them seemed logical.”
“Just like you and Belle, huh? Charlie and Bertie close to your first wedding anniversary and Mary Astrid followed a year later. I expected to be godfather by next year,” jested Louis.
“Believe me there will enough children that all my cousins will be named godparents,” promised Isabella with a slight laugh.
“Well, I don’t know about that. We’ll see how what the future holds. You’ve had some difficult pregnancies,” smiled Harry.
“Mary-Astrid was a pleasant couple of months. Nothing like it was with Charlie and Bertie. Maybe another child will come along soon.”
Well, You Do Have My Chin
Update: OMG!!! MY TIRED 36 HOUR LACK OF SLEEP BRAIN ACCIDENTLY DELETED THE STORY I POSTED THIS MORNING!!! I meant to hit edit, and apparently I hit delete and when it gave me the prompt to hit yes or no, my tired brain that it said “would you like to edit: yes or no”.... so here goes round two... so sorry guys. I wanted to add that i have this on Fanfiction.net now too (under my account Wolf-shadow666) but I just curfunkled everything... ANYWAY underneath is pretty much the post that got deleted... thankfully i save everything on document...
First off, let me just say. I’M ALIVE!!! It is now 8am in the morning, I’ve been working on the better part of this little shit that wouldn’t leave me alone i mean piece since 9pm last night…. i have TO GO TO WORK IN AN HOUR!!! HELP ME!!!!! *flails all over the place* I swear i can adult right sometimes… just not today apparently…. keep this in mind as you’re reading cause even though I’ve proof read this thrice, I’m sure some (or many) things have escaped my brain’s notice.
anyway….
Here is the comment that inspired me to write this one-shot:
@timetravelingpotatoast said:
All I really want from this season is for Killian and Henry to become good friends and talk about Lucy’s “conspiracy” only for Killian to ask who she thinks he is. However, somewhere in the translation it’s lost that Killian is his step-dad, so Henry just says his dad, leading to a “well you do have my chin,” commentary from Killian.
When the curse breaks they just squint at each other for a really long time.
Now, for the sake of the prompt, this is gonna be very heavily AU from season 7. This is by no means a “fix-it fic” because I really am enjoying season 7; I’m only writing this because I really wanted to see something like this be a thing after reading the comment. I absolutely love father/son bonding fics between Killian and Henry and I need more of it in my life… (Seriously there aren’t enough Captain Cobra centered fics to satisfy my craving for it). And I know that I said “I wish I was creative enough to contribute to the fandom of Once Upon a Time”, but after posting my last little snippet; I figured “what the hell I’m gonna do it anyway” because that’s what fandom is (I still feel like I suck terribly but *shrug* if you’re having fun doing it than screw being good at it, right?). (((Also something that should have been maybe 2000 words or less, ended up running away from me toward 4000 (my brain projecting my need for more Captain Cobra moments I guess)… I realize a lot of it is probably considered filler and I could have done away with it, but I kinda wanted to build that relationship between cursed Killian and Henry much like the relationship between Snow White and Emma in season 1)))).
Anyway, here’s a bit of backstory that I came up with for the AU universe of this fic…. If you don’t care and simply just want to read the story, than you can simply scroll down to the Continue reading link:
So in this AU, I’ve pretty much figured that Rumple, Killian, Regina and Emma came to save the day for Henry (Henry may have asked for Killian, Regina and Emma, but the three probably went to Rumple for help or something and Belle urged him to go). I’m thinking the timeline in the realm Henry is in moves faster than the timeline that is Storybrooke, so Henry might be 25 and not 18, but to the rest of his family only 1 year has passed since Henry left in search of his own story((((wondering if this is actually canon considering how shocked they were at seeing him so grown and I don’t believe for a single second that it took Emma and Killian that long to have a baby)))). Emma wasn’t pregnant at the time but eventually as they all stay and help the resistance against Tremaine and Drizella (after finding a way to send word back home that everything and everyone is alright and that they’re staying to help… maybe Rumple being pushed by Belle to stay and help them too), she and Killian end up having twins, and barely a year later Henry has his own kid with Ella. When the curse comes and separates them all, the curse spans the whole state of Washington (Tremaine or Drizella wanting to separate as many of them as they could and not keep them all in the same place… especially the true love couples. But they didn’t bank on Lucy remembering or Rumple finding a loop hole so he didn’t get cursed along with everyone else), so HH is the main hive so to speak but the fairy-tale characters are scattered across other cities and towns. Emma is off in one city (maybe Walla Walla), their twin daughters are in a group home in another city, Henry lived somewhere in Olympia (which is close enough to Seattle and HH), Robin (because I need Regina to be happy damn it! And I figure maybe they found that his soul wasn’t destroyed but simply stuck in the crystal, even across all alternate versions of said crystal in any realm, so he ends up getting freed) is also scattered somewhere, and Rumple, Killian, Regina, Ella and Lucy remained in HH where Tremaine and/or Drizella could keep an eye on them and make their lives a living hell. When Lucy finds Henry, and Jacinda steals his car (much like in the show and what not), he decides to stay at a motel for a week, finding the place interesting (and spurring a bit of creativity that he hadn’t felt since his failed first book) and eventually that week turns into him finding an actual place to stay once he gets to know the people in the neighborhood (made hard by the outrageous prices being asked). When Detective Rogers hears about his search, he offers to turn his den/office into a spare room (the only reason Regina/Roni didn’t offer is because she lives in a small studio apartment above the bar with the only closed room being a bathroom)…. Eventually Rumple as Weaver manages to get everyone back into the neighborhood (((he was the one to give Lucy the book. He was the one to find and bring back the cursed versions of Robin—Kevin Adams, who is a struggling lawyer that ends up helping Jacinda, by Rumple/Weaver’s prompting, get custody of Lucy back—and Emma—Danielle “Dani” Stevens, who was a sketch artist for Walla Walla police department. He was also the one to find which group home the twins were staying in and try to adopt them, since he wasn’t sure how long it would take to break the curse, and he didn’t want them staying there… Rumple and Killian might be civil borderline grey area friends, but he likes the twins and it’ll get them back to their family that much quicker once the curse is broken if he does it like this…)))) and the curse gets broken the same as in season 1 with Henry and Lucy (cause I’m unoriginal and my brain can’t think of anything else right now) ((((That should be enough of a background right? I don’t know… I’m terrible at this… don’t question the plot holes too much okay? You might get sucked into its black hole…))))
(((I looked at apartment averages in Seattle as a guideline (got rid of link since it wasn’t working)… and even though almost 3000 is very high for a one-bedroom apartment that Henry was looking for; I figured that Tremaine and Drizella were trying to weed out the people in the neighborhood slowly so they could bulldoze and improve and bring forth a ‘richer’ environment and a “richer” culture of people to surround themselves with, therefore causing more suffering and separation for those cursed and gaining something else for themselves….))))
((also when it comes to ages, I’m probably way off from canon, but these are my head canon ages for them here so… Emma was 28 at the start of season 1; Killian was 29, Regina 32. Adding 9 years considering Henry left at 18 and only a year passed in Storybrooke whereas 7 years passed where Henry was, that would make them 37, 38, and 41. With another 11ish to 12ish years they are now 48, 49, and 52 with Henry being 37ish.
tagging @superchocovian since she kindly asked me to (hope you enjoy it!!!)
Anyway, without farther ado, i give you this Captain Cobra one-shot in all it’s (step)father/son bonding glory!
The din of Roni’s bar was oddly relaxing to Henry as he searched on his laptop for available apartments to move into, but after another site herald the same results, he sighed, closed the screen, and dropped his head into the crook of his arm. Was it too much to ask for a place within his price range? Hell, he was sure he could find something cheaper in the heart of Seattle than he could here.
But no, he stubbornly wanted to stay in this part of the neighborhood. There was something about Hyperion Heights, something that spoke to him, and not just Lucy’s crazy theory that his book was real and they were all fairytale characters scattered across the state (never mind the even crazier theory that he was her father—there was no way he could ever forget meeting a beautiful girl like Jacinda or be stupid enough not to fight for more than a one night stand with said woman).
The scraping of a chair across from him brought Henry’s attention up to that of the arrival of Detective Logan Rogers. The cop’s eyebrow was raised at him in silent question and concern as he sat down and nabbed the untouched bear claw from his plate.
“Bad day?” he asked finally with a tilt of his head as Roni approached with his usual beer.
When Henry still didn’t move to answer, simply groaning and hiding his face back in the crook of his arm, Roni supplied. “He’s looking for places to stay… and failing by the looks of it.”
“The asking prices are outrageous! How do you guys survive here?” he griped into his arm.
Roni snorted and Henry peeked up at her with a perturbed eyebrow raised. “You’ve seen the state of the neighborhood and the state of my bar before I decided to fight back. Isn’t that answer enough for you?”
“What’s your budget?” Logan cut in with his query before Henry could snark back and start an argument with the ornery bartender.
“Well,” Henry’s eyes shifted to him just as the older man took a bite out of the pilfered pastry. “With Seattle, I kind of figured I’d be lucky to find something for twenty-two hundred, but there is no way I’m paying almost three thousand for a place that’s barely in the city’s limits.”
“Welcome to the land of Belfrey greed.” chimed Roni as she walked back to tend the bar and the new arrival of customers.
Henry scowled un-amusedly at her back as she went.
“I have space,”
Startled, Henry gazed, wide eyed, back at the Detective. “What?”
“Well, it’s not really a ‘room’, but the den can easily be turned into one.” Logan continued, his good hand going up to scratch nervously behind his ear.
“Wha—Why?” Tilting his head and narrowing his eyes, Henry pressed on. “I know the three of us are ‘kinda’ working together, but we barely know each other. Hell, for all you know I could be a serial killer.” at Logan’s snort and raised brow, Henry rolled his eyes and said defensively. “Shut up, you know what I mean.”
“I trust you.” Logan relented simply with a shrug of his shoulders. “Besides, I have a gun I’m not afraid to use, and you look to be out of options, mate.”
Still eyeing the older man with suspicion, not used to blatantly kind gestures from others, he asked. “Can I swing by to look at your place before I decide?”
“Of course.” taking a swig of his beer, Logan gestured with his head to the closed laptop. “Now, what was it you wanted to show me?”
(***)
Walking into the apartment after Logan, Henry took in the sparsely decorated living space with a familiar pang beating against his chest. It was neat and orderly, everything he considered the detective to be, even after a week of working covertly with him and Roni. But seeing it so bare, devoid of… well, devoid of life and personality; it all just resonated with him. There wasn’t even a single picture or photo on the walls or table tops (Henry knows there are photos of Logan out there. He’s seen the pictures Roni hangs proudly on the walls of her establishment, knows that the picture of Logan and Roni—two best friends, he’s come to learn, that grew up together in the neighborhood—has a special place right behind the bar where she works). There was nothing, other than the books neatly tucked into a shelf, to give Henry a glimpse into what made this man Logan Rogers.
Walking through the 900 square foot space, he knew it wasn’t just the home of a bachelor; it was the home of someone who was just as lost as Henry himself felt. A space made entirely out of necessity rather than be made to feel like an actual home. It reminded him of his years after the foster system, before he had met his late wife, where he had had nothing of that old life worth keeping. Anything he had gained afterwards had been destroyed by the fire that took his wife and daughter three years ago, and after that he had just never bothered to start over (it wouldn’t bring them back and honestly they were all Henry wanted, not materialistic things).
As Logan led him through the kitchen toward the open den, Henry wondered what kind of past the man must have had, wondered if he too was an orphan looking for a place to belong.
“Here it is.” Logan stated with a flourish of his hand and ultimately cutting Henry out of his thoughts.
His eyes roved over the small space, at the neat and tidy desk underneath the window and the wall lined with more bookshelves and books and a single three-drawer filing cabinet.
“Sorry, I know it’s not much… doesn’t even have a door.”
Henry’s eyes cut to the older man just as he saw his good hand go to scratch behind his ear (a nervous tick he’d come to realize early on in the week). “No, it’s perfect,” He reassured as he walked around the opened room; envisioning where his stuff would fit. “I don’t really need that much space anyway.” he moved back to the opened archway and gave the man a small smile. “And privacy can be fixed with a curtain,”
“Does that mean you accept my offer?”
“If you don’t mind me for a roommate, than yeah, I’ll take it.”
(***)
A little over one month since his move into the neighborhood, and not once did Henry regret his decision (well, maybe a little; after all, Victoria Belfrey and her daughter are a force to be reckoned with… and good god did those two give him a headache sometimes). He genuinely liked it here; he liked most of the quirky people and he could clearly see why the neighborhood was worth trying to save. He also found rooming with Logan to be better than he originally expected. Sure they had their moments (like the kitchen incident that nearly gave the detective an aneurysm, or how scarily grumpy Logan could get when he’s had a bad day at the station), but their camaraderie was easy going between them, and for once after three years, Henry felt like he had a true friend again.
It was because of this easy camaraderie that Henry and Logan, one Saturday morning, found themselves planning a Star Wars marathon and arguing over the order in which to watch it (“They’re my movies, Rogers!” “And it’s my TV, Mills.”).
Somehow Henry won the argument, which found Logan sitting on the couch with the large popcorn bowl settled on the middle cushion and a beer in his hand, while Henry squatted down in front of their combined movie collection to find the first disk.
As he skimmed the neatly ordered DVDs for the one he wanted, his finger froze on a particular title and could barely contain the Cheshire cat grin as he pulled it out and pivoted to face the detective.
“The Princess Bride: Special Edition.”
Logan scowled and pointed his finger at him as he defended. “Shove off, mate, it’s a good book and a good movie; leave it alone.”
The grin on Henry’s face turned impish as he pivoted back and added as he went, “As you wish.”
The couch pillow thrown at his back did nothing to curb his mirth.
It was almost three months after his move to Hyperion Heights, that Henry managed to work the nerve enough (more like getting the quadrant that was Roni, Logan, Sabine and Lucy to shut up, and to stop hounding him to try and move on and be happy) to ask Jacinda on a date.
Glancing at himself in the hallway mirror, and trying to ignore the grinning idiot leaning against the wall a few paces behind him; he felt the bubbling of nerves roiling in his stomach as he finally turned to face his roommate.
“You’ll be fine,” Logan soothed with the utmost confidence. “You didn’t have any problems when you were flirting with her, one date isn’t going to kill you, mate. Just be yourself.”
“Yeah, be myself.” Henry snorted and rubbed his sweating palms against his jean clad thighs. “Cause any girl would swoon at a failed writer, a widowed husband, and a nerd for all things 80’s, Star Wars, Harry Potter, or Tolkien related.”
“Henry,” Logan stepped forward than, placing his hand and prosthetic firmly on his shoulders as he earnestly stated. “You’ve told Jacinda all of this already and yet she still accepted to go to this concert with you. So cut yourself a little slack, give her a little more credit than that, and go out tonight and have fun.”
(***)
It was almost six months after his move, and during one of their covert meet ups at the bar, when Henry felt a little friendly revenge against Roni and Logan was in order (because dear god, if they didn’t stop and take their own damn advice, he was going to go crazy… or take Roni’s bat and beat himself or them with it… really, he wasn’t picky).
It hadn’t been long after his and Jacinda’s first—or even their second— date that Jacinda decided enough was enough and it was time to try and win custody of her daughter back from her step mother. Detective Weaver had recommended a Lawyer from Spokane, and ever since Kevin Adams stepped foot into Roni’s bar, the two had done nothing but snark at each other.
Within the same month, a missing person’s case had popped up that apparently Weaver thought required the work of a sketch artist from Walla Walla… or so Logan kept griping to him to no freaking end. Honestly, Henry thought Danielle (or Dani as she asked to be called) a rather nice woman, maybe a little too bubbly and Chatty Cathy at times, but if Logan was to be believed than she was the worst woman he had ever had the displeasure to work with.
Yeah… right…
Denial, she is a river, and both of them are currently drowning at the bottom of it.
“So,” He began innocently around a mouthful of pizza. “When are you both going to stop pussy-footing around and ask Dani and Kevin out?”
The soda Logan was drinking and the pizza Roni was currently chewing, both ended up spat out on the table and floor, and the word vomit that followed as they tried to deny it had Henry rolling his eyes so hard he was surprised that they didn’t just roll right out of his head.
“Uh-huh,” putting his slice back down on his plate, he folded his arms across his chest and stared them both down, feeling for all the world like the no nonsense father he should have been to the daughter that would have been thirteen now. “Guys, I’m not stupid… and the last I checked my vision was perfect, so not blind either.” He cut them off before they could rush to deny it any farther. “If I have to sit here and watch you two continue with this charade a moment longer, I will either be checking myself in somewhere or Detective Weaver will have not one but three missing person’s cases to contend with.”
They didn’t try to feed him any more bullshit after that, which he was grateful for, because seriously there was only so much a person can take.
And if he caught his roommate dressed (rather nicely) in a blue button up shirt, black iron pressed slacks, and trying to rush past him and out the door before Henry could say a word with a bouquet of pink and yellow roses in hand.
Well… he could only thank whatever deity listening for small miracles.
It’s at elven months since his move, that Henry felt for all the world a content man. Jacinda had won her battle against her step-mother, and Lucy had become a constant presence in the apartment, especially since he had offered to watch her after school while Jacinda worked. He loved Lucy and her precocious nature, found her imagination beyond incredible for an elven year old and even began to look forward to hearing her crazy theories about them being cursed.
Sometimes they would be alone, with him helping her with her homework and other times Logan would be there, smiling and humoring her and her theories like they all had agreed to do.
It was during one of these nights, after Jacinda and Lucy had eaten dinner with them and left, that Logan’s curiosity had gotten the better of him. They were in the kitchen, Henry washing the dishes while his roommate dried them, that Logan broke the comfortable silence.
“Who does she think I am?”
“Huh?” Henry glanced over with a brow raised.
“Lucy,” he elaborated. “With her theories, who does she think I am? She never tells me when I ask.”
Henry snorted out a chuckle as he handed over the plate and proceeded washing the next one while answering. “Captain Hook.”
“You’re kidding.” The dry look Henry gave him caused him to roll his eyes. “It’s the hand isn’t it?”
“Probably,” Henry shrugged. “Or it could be the fact that she thinks you’re my dad.”
“What?” Logan froze mid swipe with the towel and Henry could practically feel the man’s eyes burning his profile.
“Yeah, crazy, I know.”
“Mate, if she is to be believed and you are my son; I would have had you when I was 11…”
They both chuckled at that.
“Again, crazy, I know.”
They went back to the comfortable silence as they worked, but the occasional contemplative side eye he would catch Logan giving him in his peripheral as they cleaned up the rest of the kitchen, eventually had Henry turning to stare blatantly at the man’s profile with an eyebrow raised in question.
“Do I have barbeque sauce on my face or something?”
Startled, Logan shifted his attention away from the stove top he was wiping down, and met his eyes with that contemplative expression still in place.
“No, you’re fine.” He distractedly answered.
“Than what’s on your mind? And don’t tell me nothing; you’ve been staring at me off and on for the past five minutes?”
“I was just thinking.”
The other brow rose to meet its twin as he deadpanned. “Clearly,”
Logan rolled his eyes and elaborated. “I was thinking about what you said, about who Lucy thinks I am.”
“Logan, none of that is real.”
“No, I know that… but—now that it’s been said, I can’t help but see it. Hell, Henry you can’t tell me that you can’t see it, not even a little bit.”
Henry tilted his head and narrowed his eyes at him; his eyebrows practically at his hairline now.
“We do look a little alike, mate; long lost cousins or brothers or something. I mean you do kinda have my chin, our noses are almost similar and the brow structure too…” he trailed off.
With a snort, Henry joked. “You’ve been hanging out with Dani too much, you’re even starting to sound like a sketch artist.”
“Shut up,”
He dodged and caught the wet rag thrown at him, before tossing it back; both chuckling at the ridiculousness of it all as they finished up and moved to the couch to see what was on TV.
Expect, as the days and weeks progressed (and Weaver shockingly adopted two pre-teen girls from Aberdeen that looked eerily like Dani and Logan), Henry found that he couldn’t stop thinking about it too (no matter how hard he tried to shake the insane notion from his head each and every time it sprung back into the forefront of his thoughts).
He’d often catch himself staring at Logan when the older man was distracted and—illogically enough as it was—could practically see what the other man was talking about.
It was crazy.
It wasn’t conceivable.
But damn it all if Logan wasn’t right.
They did share the same freaking chin, and though his nose was a bit larger than Logan’s, it was the same freaking shape.
Maybe he needed to check himself in somewhere after all…
(***)
Sixteen months after moving to Hyperion Heights, the curse was broken.
It had been an emotionally exhausting week beforehand, with Lucy suddenly falling into a coma that the doctors couldn’t medically explain. Jacinda had rightfully been beside herself with worry, and all Henry could feel was the crushing feeling of losing another loved one… another child. It had been the very reason why he didn’t like opening up, didn’t like taking these leaps of faith when it came to his heart and feelings. Yet he had stupidly allowed himself to get close to all these people, and stupidly thought he could have a second chance at a family, but those dreams had gone up in flames the first time and now plummeted back down from the stars a second time with the flat lining of the heart monitor as Jacinda brokenly wailed her heartache.
He didn’t feel the hand of his roommate trying to console him as he numbly watched Jacinda break down in the waiting room they had been forcibly moved too when the doctors came swarming into the room. Didn’t hear the words being spoken as Jacinda fought and then bonelessly collapsed in Sabine and Roni’s arms; her wails gut wrenching and shredding his already scarred heart to pieces. The flood of his emotions and his own tears didn’t come until after the doctor told them that their precious, precocious little Lucy was truly and utterly gone, that the defibrillator failed to restart her heart.
It was Logan who caught him when his legs refused to hold his weight any longer, when the world suddenly came crushing down around him and nothing felt right anymore. And it was Logan who helped him into the chair; the warm presence of his roommates hand at the back of his neck guiding his head to lean on his broad shoulder. And he took the comfort and sobbed for all he was worth. Sobbed for the loss of the wife and daughter he had had to bare losing and moving on from all on his own, sobbed for Jacinda and how much she didn’t deserve to know the gut wrenching pain that losing a child brought, sobbed for Lucy who had been robbed of her own dreams, who had been robbed the chance to live and grow.
His heart hurt as he followed Jacinda into the room to say goodbye, the tears blurring his vision at seeing the white sheet lying over Lucy’s little body; so final in its position that it made him want to collapse all over again. But he couldn’t, he had to be strong for Jacinda as he was the one to hold her upright as they moved toward the bed.
Her sobs as she pulled back the sheet to view her daughters pale face tore at him even more, her words a broken, jumbled mess as she climbed onto the bed and wept onto her daughters unmoving chest.
Running on autopilot, Henry’s feet moved of their own accord; one hand going to Jacinda’s shaking back and the other to card the bangs off of Lucy’s forehead.
“I’m sorry Lucy, I’m so, so sorry.” He whispered as he leaned down and pressed his lips to her crown.
The whoosh of wind startled him and before he could right himself to wonder where it came from, the overwhelming flood of memories came next; slamming everything back into place and causing the air to deflate right out of his lungs. The watery, startled gasp from Ella (his wife, his true love) told him she remembered too, but it was the choked rush of life from his daughter, his daughter (his beautiful and very much alive little girl, his other true love), that was bloody music to his ears and heart.
“Papa? Mama?” she wheezed out as her eyes foggily and confusedly took them and her surroundings in.
“Baby!”
Everything was alright.
Everything in the world was right again.
(***)
The moment Lucy was cleared to leave; the overdue reunion of their family came afterwards. The battle was far from over; not with Tremaine and Drizella currently in hiding and no one knowing where they had run off too, but they were together again, and at the moment that was enough for them all as they celebrated at the bar that had been his adoptive mother’s home for the last eighteen months.
Henry had his wife and daughter back, his half-sisters, both his mothers, both his step-fathers and his grandfather. To say he was over the moon would have been an understatement as the din of fairytale characters and his family filled the industrial styled establishment.
It was all so overwhelming still that he had to take a seat at one of the tables; simply content to watch as he sipped at his beer. Killian soon joined him with his own glass, rum he was sure now that the man remembered who he was, and the thought of step-fathers in general had his mind venturing to their conversation once again.
It must have been on Killian’s mind as well because before either knew what they were truly doing, they were starting at one another, eyes narrowed and the rim of their drinks to their lips as they tried to see what apparently their cursed selves had been able to see.
“Man, I hope this is the last curse we ever have to face. I’ve lost count at how many cursed memories we’ve had forced into our heads at this point.” Emma groaned, yet her arrival didn’t completely break their staring contest as she dropped into the chair next to Killian; her eyes not yet looking at either of them but at her daughters who were laughing along with Lucy near the corner of the bar. She blindly but efficiently snatched her husband’s glass out of his hand and downed the last shot of the dark amber that was left as she continued. “Seriously though, can you imagine the identity crisis we’ll have in our old age if we get Alzheimer’s?” Finally glancing over at them, and realizing she had neither her son nor her husband’s attention, she raised an eyebrow and asked with trepidation. “What’s up with you two? Is everything alright?”
“Yeah love,” Killian briefly met Emma’s eyes, before he was squinting back at Henry as he continued. “Apparently while cursed, and thanks to our lovely granddaughter, the two of us got it into our heads that we were blood related; something about seeing similarities in our features and what have you.”
Blinking once than twice, Emma’s eyes bounced from one to the other, before she was tilting her head and squinting at them as well. Satisfied with what she saw, she nodded to herself, shrugged, and stated. “I can see it, especially when you wear your hair like this and stop shaving.” She grinned and chuckled and leaned forward to ruffle her son’s gel slicked hair, which Henry swatted away with a scowl as he tried to fix it back into place.
However her statement only proceeded to have them squint even harder at each other, and Emma could do nothing more than laugh at her first two goofy true loves.
As the celebrations began to die down and people started heading home, Henry and Killian simply shrugged and let it go as they hugged each other goodbye for the night (each having every intention of spending this night with their loved ones).
“Well,” Killian began softly. “Blood related or not, you’re still my son Henry; always have been, my boy.”
The smile that stretched Henry’s face, nearly threatened to split his skin from ear to ear as he replied just as softly but no less sincerely. “Thanks, dad.”
And if they hugged each other just a little tighter and their eyes shone just a little brighter with emotion, no one that witnessed the moment commented on it.
bikini kill + fugazi appreciation thread March 27, 2005
by bodhisattvagrrl
because of a strange series of circumstances i had the amazing good fortune, honor and privilege of taking my younger daughter who is 15 to meet Kathi Wilcox, bass player for the early '90s riot grrrl band Bikini Kill, and currently one of two lead guitarists for the Casual Dots, for a one-time guitar lesson which became an opportunity for my daughter to ask her what it was like being in one of the most important grrrl bands ever. sad to say i was woefully ignorant of Bikini Kill so i did some research the night before and was blown away to realize how important they are in rock history. i don't know what Kathi told my daughter because i was in another room, but when we were leaving Kathi said they never had any idea that one day their band would be in *books*, they just hoped they might be able to play in dc or nyc. (Bikini Kill was from olympia, washington) she said when they were in nyc to play cbgb's, a friend who had a friend who worked for spin as a favor to the band asked her friend to write about Bikini Kill, not realizing that Bikini Kill didn't like spin, lol. the spin woman approached them as they were about to look for some pizza and asked if she could interview them. Kathi said they were excited about being in nyc and eating pizza there so they told her that they couldn't, though not in a bad way, and went off to look for pizza. she said the spin person couldn't believe Bikini Kill didn't want to talk to her and she wrote about them anyway, like who did Bikini Kill think they were, they didn't even have an album out yet. Kathi said for some reason that article made the media want to find out who they were more. she said maybe if they'd talked to the spin person they'd have gotten a little blurb and that would have been it, but it was strange how things worked out. while Kathi was talking with my daughter, i waited in the dining room of her apartment and her boyfriend, Guy Picciotto, made me a cup of tea. =o also very sad to say, even tho i have lived in the dc area most of my life and naturally have heard of these guys, i missed out on the whole Fugazi experience. while researching Bikini Kill, i also read about why Fugazi was such an amazing band, like they never charged more than $5 for their shows or $8 for their cds. they had values and ethics and a community. i'd say more about that but i'm typing in the dark (aforementioned daughter is asleep nearby) so i can't refer to the books i was reading from. i couldn't believe he actually sat down with me. =o but since he did, i asked him what he's doing now. he said Fugazi didn't disband, they're in a break phase. they still meet regularly to talk. meanwhile he and his longtime friend Eddie and a couple younger guys who play bass and drums have been working on music (he thinks they might have a cd to release later this year). this band doesn't have a name yet. i asked him if Fugazi ever looked at other bands making lots of money and think, damn, we should charge more? he said, no, he is comfortable with their values and their decisions. he said they don't judge what other bands do, and he said he's enjoyed seeing big arena bands himself. but he said he didn't think people in bands that made more money were necessarily any happier than he is. he said something about a trade-off - bands that charge higher prices for tickets might not be able to get as many people to come to their shows, whereas Fugazi charging $5 enabled lots of people to come, even sometimes kids who didn't really like them but it was something they could afford, lol. he says he's been doing a lot of production work for other bands (other bands hiring him to produce them). he said he loved touring. he mentioned playing australia and the band camping out and he made the mistake of feeding a kangaroo some bread - when he ran out of bread the kangaroo got mad and attacked him! kangaroo kicked him in the chest and they all took off running, lol. he says it's exhausting sometimes but Fugazi is committed to trying to answer all the fans that write them. he said they have about 700 live sets recorded, i think he said 10 have been released. he said they were recorded by their sound guy so the quality of the recordings is very good, though some performances are better than others. he said looking back on the seventeen years that Fugazi was playing and touring, he remembers how incredible it was when everyone in the band was in sync, like they could read each other's minds, and the synergy with the crowds - he said their shows were the *events* themselves - not the band but the band with the crowd - that they never had a set list (they had about 100 songs ready to play) (they used to practice five days a week) - they made up their sets as they went along, according to the energy of the crowds. he also said when they were off, like if someone was having a bad day or something, it was horrible. i could tell that he and the band are proud of their legacy. Guy was so really, really down-to-earth, intelligent, thoughtful (well read - he has a degree in english from georgetown university), courteous, self-effacing, modest, humble, sincere, supportive .... Kathi and Guy have *tons* of all kinds of books. he said he has an older brother by about a year and a younger sister by four or five years. he said even though his brother and he are closer in age he doesn't think he ever got what he was doing. he thinks his sister is the only one in his family who got it, that she came out to see the band when they played in san franciso. he said his parents had the normal parental concern about what he was doing, but he thinks that when the band finally started getting critical acclaim, they finally stopped worrying. i asked him what he thought of dance music and he said he didn't really know much about it. then he laughed and asked if i'd ever heard of dj spooky. i said yes, and he said he and dj spooky used to wash dishes at a restaurant called food for thought a long time ago way before they became musicians. i told him that my daughter initiates jam sessions but she's too shy to play along, she ends up watching her friends (boys) play. he suggested that it might be better for her to play with kids she feels comfortable playing with, maybe even kids who aren't as good as she is, not kids she feels intimidated by. he said it's not about proficiency, at least in his case, and that sometimes people who can play proficiently are boring. he later said these things to my daughter himself, and i was so touched by his genuine, respectful thoughtfulness toward her. he offered to show her his guitars and she accepted. :) that's when Kathi told me the story about pizza in nyc and the spin lady. :) my daughter doesn't say much but i've got to believe she was as impressed as i was by how *nice* these two punk rock legends were. anyway, i know some of you dogs are *quite* well-versed in Fugazi and Bikini Kill - so i thought some of you might appreciate hearing what *cool* human beings Kathi Wilcox and Guy Picciotto are.
i know my daughter will never forget this day the rest of her life.i won't! respectfully, mary
FFXIV Q&A Meme
Tagging : @lordfluffyvoice , @floating-head , @thefrozenpyro, @negevsthebear. Also pretty much anyone else in the FC/Raid Static or just who else wants in on the fun.
What is your full name? “Like it say on the paper, Olympia Bhulrn”
What do your friends call you? She muses over the question as she begins listing them off “ Often times people just call me “Boss” since I’m the leader of my Free Company, Shuffle Alliance. Whether it’s formal or they say it in jest, I can’t tell sometimes. It’s the same when they jest over my title of Warrior of Light saying things “Oh look at the savior of Eorzea! Oh great savior, please pass the pepper!” The miqo’te chuckles as she continues to list - “ Rolanberry Cat, Red, and well.. then there’s always Olly.” Olympia looks a bit conflicted as she answers, “ I only let my old friends call me that one. It’s got a special meaning to it I don’t like to easily hand out.”
What is your favorite animal? “I’m not sure actually! Growing up in Gridania and with my conjurer background, I always felt close to nature. That includes all manner of animals and- oh okay fine fine, Dogs and Foxes are just absolutely adorable but I suppose..The lesser panda would have to take the cake. My mother was a merchant and used to travel all across the land. Growing up we had a lesser panda that I adored named Miss Retsuko.”
Where were you born?
“ Like I kinda mentioned, Gridania. Grew up in the twelveswoods and all! Funny how a miqo’te of Sun Seeker origin wound up there of all places.”
Do you have children?
She begins to stutter and become visibly flustered, ‘What!? Oh no-no! I mean, I’d love to settle down..have kids and retire from this line of work but..well.. One doesn’t exactly QUIT being the Warrior of Light.”
“Maybe one day, I’ll have my own kits. Now that’ll be something, a humble ol’ miqo’te living a quiet life..”
Is there a person/people you love? Without hesitation she bluntly states “ Makise Tera. She’s been by my side for about three..four years now? I couldn’t ask for a more faithful and strong partner. We’ve saved each other’s hides more time than I bother to count!” Olympia crosses her arms and pinches the bridge of her nose “ .. And she also flusters me to no end sometimes with her incessant teasing and jests when we’re alone. I’ve fought against all manner of beasts, voidsent and warriors but she’s one woman I just can’t beat.”
What is your favorite color? “ White and Red. Those are the colors of the robe I received back when I first became a White Mage. I couldn’t of been prouder to wear those garments.” she says with a warm smile.
What is your full occupation? “ Okay come on now- I’m pretty sure I have a reputation by now! After all, everyone comes asking for my attention every other second! I guess if you have to get a proper reply”, she clears her throat, and crosses her arms.
“ Free Company leader of the Shuffle Alliance. We’re a peacekeeping company that tries to resolve conflicts. Preferably before things break out into utter hells. If they do though, we can handle it. We were recently tasked in helping the Ala Mhigan and Doman liberation.” “...Oh right, I guess the Warrior of Light counts as a full time occupation too.”
Are you good at physical fighting? “ I..suppose I am now. In the very least, I’m somewhat competent. Until this past year, I was a White Mage and embraced my support role. With our most recent job in assisting in liberation I’ve um.. changed from that.”
Olympia touches the long scar on the right side of her face. It starts from her cheek and ends nearly at her nose
Which form are you best at? “I’ve picked up the sword and shield. I’ve been training tirelessly to strengthen my body and skills with it. I’ve really needed to become stronger and push my limits.”
What about magic?
“ Oh magic? That’s probably still my forte. I mean, it’s what I’m mostly known for as a healer!”
Which type are you best at? There’s an annoyed tone in her voice as having to repeat herself again “.White Magic and Conjuration are my tried and true specialties. I know some basic thaumaturgy.”
Craftsmanship? “Growing up in Gridania, I naturally picked up a couple skills. I’m pretty decent with a Carpenter’s saw!”
Any other skills? "Hells if I know proper. Does writing count? I’ve been writing off and on accounts of my journies as memoirs.”
Are you an only child? " That I am. I’m half lalafell and half miqo’te. My parents had a rather difficult time just to get me.”
Where do you see yourself in five years?
“ Whenever I’m needed I suppose. I’m kind of a slave to destiny and the title I bear. I gotta go where trouble is brewing.”
Have you ever almost died? " Too many times to count. Way too many times.”
Do you have a secret, not just a secret, but like a really big secret hardly anyone knows? " Now if I did, Why would I bring it up? Kind of defeats the purpose of what a secret is, huh?”
Salty or sweet? " Sweet! um..No Salty! Um.. Look both are REALLY good! You can’t just make me decide like that!”
Do you like yourself? ‘ “I..suppose” “ That’s a hard question. I wanna say that I guess I do? It’s not like I DISLIKE myself but I could always be better.”
Do you believe in the Twelve? " It’s hard not for me to believe with everything I’ve seen.”
Are you religious?
Olympia begins to laugh at the question , “ I mean, I’m not especially pious. I believe in the twelve and what not but that doesn’t stop me from having ill feelings about the subject.
Do you carry prejudice with you?
I’m at odds with my relationship with the Mother cr-” Olympia stops for a second to reconsider her thoughts. “You know, this is a really complicated and touchy subject. I guess something that really grinded on me were how haughty some Ishgardian nobles were. Lineage this, family achievements that, they put so much laurels into the past they didn’t work for themselves.”
What do you consider entertainment?
“Books! Books and reading! I grew up reading stories of adventurers and their tales! If I could own a library, I could just read on end!”
Favorite drink?
“ mmn....Frozen Spirits are always good to unwind to.”
Do you have any family traditions?
“ I can’t think of any of the top of my head to be quite honest. I had a pretty typical upbringing, nothing too terribly unique.” “I do make time to celebrate my Free Company members. They risk life and limb for their services. The Shuffle Alliance and company always celebrates after a job well done.”
Are you a good person?
“ I wanna say I am but how presumptuous would that be to say outright, eh? I’m a person that’s always wanting to strive for betterment.” “..Guess that still sounds kinda snobby, haha”
06/08/2020
Hello world,
Nothing interesting happened today, we just painted at the donut shop again but I got bubble tea so I was instantly in a good mood! It’s crazy that a simple over-priced drink can make my day so much better. We’re almost done at the shop and I think we only have one day’s worth of work left. On Thursday to Sunday, we’re taking a road trip to Seattle and Olympia National Park, and although I’m excited to visit a new city and see some beautiful sights at the park, I’m still terrified of camping, let alone with one of my boyfriend’s friends. I know that I have nothing to prove because he knows that I always try my best and give him my all of my imperfect self, but I’m scared of being judged by the people closest to him, like that girl who spoke rudely about me on text. I just wish I wasn’t as hard on myself when it comes to being perfect. I don’t understand why I have such high standards for myself when everything around me is imperfect and beautiful the way it is. Why should I be perfect if everything around me isn’t? I hope that this trip brings more openness and realizations.
Last night, I asked him why he asked what I would do if he said ‘I love you’ back. It’s so scary because every question I have for him like that, I always expect the worst and prepare myself internally to have my soul crushed into a billion pieces. My heart is turning into dust, because I get broken down time and time again, even when I haven’t had a chance to rebuild myself. He said he was curious to see what my answer was, and I said that he shouldn’t play with my hopes like that because I know he would never tell me that. He said that that wasn’t necessarily true. Although I should have a positive mindset, I’m tired of hoping so much and then ending up with so much more sadness. It’s not that I don’t trust him but I’m too traumatized by the pain to believe him completely. He also said that he knew I loved him from the way I look at him and care for him, and I guess this is true. Whatever I do with him, I try to give him the best. And I do this instinctually, and I can’t really explain it, but I guess on the receiving end, it makes people feel loved. I just wish I could control it better so that I don’t ever get taken for granted again.
Today, I was so proud of myself because me 2 weeks ago would’ve started crying about a situation we went through today. We saw a car in the highway with their bumper loose, and he told me about the time he went to visit a girl (the same one who texted mean things about me) and he had a similar experience. All I could focus about was him going to visit this girl who was a 4 hour drive away. So many questions formed in my head - Does he still have feelings for her? Would he have done that for me? What makes her so special? Is it because she’s so chill and cool but I’m not? Is it people like that who he misses hanging out with when he was single? It’s so hard to have a mind like mine, where I will overthink every single situation. I get so jealous about all these girls from his past that sound way more chill and adventurous, and I hate that I can’t let myself loosen up more. But I realized that isn’t relevant to my relationship. He hasn’t texted her back since “that day” and I’m the one who’s with him, so I should focus on the present. By having this thinking process, I was able to slowly but surely move on from having an internal breakdown.
Today, I reblogged a quote by Khalil Gibran that goes - “How beautiful to find a heart that loves you, without asking you for anything, but to be okay.” Not to be narcissistic, but I know that this is how I make the people I care about most feel. I just wish that someone would do the same for me someday. I saw this post about activists burning out because they do so much and one day, they just stop and quit completely. I’m starting to feel that way about love.
WHEN EARTH TURNS TO ASHES
Masterlist
Chapter Seven: Loner Loser
"And how did you get locked into that classroom, Miss Linh?" Principal Strom stared down at Selene, his eyes empathetic and kind. Selene wished to tell him, but it hurt too much to admit the betrayal of her best friend.
"I, uh- I accidentally locked it." Selene glanced down at her shoes, her stomach churning with guilt. "I don't really know how. Someone might have locked it earlier and I just got shut it."
Shrugging her shoulders, Selene continued the lie. "I passed out because it just had this horrible stench of smoke. I think some kids were smoking in there before me because it was awful." Selene wrinkled her nose at the memory of the real smoke and how it had made her feel. "I have these really bad allergies and don't do well with smoke. Or cotton, for that matter." Selene coughed for special effect. She was a master liar.
Principal Strom remained skeptical, his too big shoulders hunching as he analyzed her. "And you're sure that there was no... sabotage? Are there any students who may be out to get you? Have you been bullied at all in the past or at the present?" He was on to her, but there was no way that Selene was going to let him get her.
"Nope, I'm fine." Selene smiled her most brilliant smile. She was good at pretending. She was excellent at deception. She was clever and sharp as a knife; but that had never made anyone want to be her friend. She had a brain, but no one to share her witty jokes with.
"Well," Principal Strom sighed. He looked worn and tired, and Selene felt bad for the man. He tried so hard to do his job and help kids; but at the end of the day, he was still getting lied to. "I hope that you will report any behavior that is against school policies, especially bullying. We have no tolerance for it here at OHS. Have an excellent day, Miss Linh."
Selene stood from her stiff seat, paying a brief goodbye. She knew that what Pearl and her cohorts were doing was wrong. They were terrible people— monsters even. She hated them all, but some small part of her couldn't tell the Principal; because she couldn't bring herself to believe it had actually happened.
Cress Darnel was supposed to have been her friend. She had been the only person to stand by Selene after Peony's death, but times change. She must have been the one to tell Pearl and her friends her fear of fire.
No, Selene wasn't scared of what Pearl and her cronies would do to her. She was used to pain and heartbreak— but betrayal was something entirely new to her. Selene had never opened up enough to a person to allow such a tragedy, and admitting it would hurt her more than any physical wound.
Selene had lost too much in life, but losing her friend to betrayal was the ultimate tragedy.
***
The buzz of a telephone over one thousand miles away tickled at Kai's ear. It had taken him only a few hours to locate the Linh's phone number and only a few more to figure out what he was going to say. By now, it was nine in the morning.
He had checked everything, making sure that it would all be perfect. The time zones had only an hour difference and it was a Friday morning. No one should yet have left for work. It would all be perfect.
"Hello?" Said a voice from the other end. It sounded young and feminine.
"Hello," Kai said in his chipper voice. He had only slept for an hour and a half, but he felt more awake than ever. "My name is Kaito Crown, and I was hoping to speak with Garan Linh."
Silence followed, and Kai wondered if the girl had hung up on him. "Hello?"
"You can't speak with my father." The girl's voice was angry— defensive. "What kind of sick prank is this?" The girl sounded upset now, and Kai felt bad even though he didn't know what he had done wrong.
"I'm sorry," Kai cut in quickly, before she could call him out for anything else he hadn't done. "Who is this?"
"Pearl Linh." The girl—Pearl— huffed.
"Well, Pearl, like I said, I would like to talk to your father on behalf of his ward, Selene." Kai stated patiently. He couldn't quite understand why Pearl sounded so annoyed at him, or why she wouldn't let him talk to her father. It wasn't as if he were trying to scam them or anything.
An agitated snarl sounded from the other end. The animal-like sound scared Kai into nearly dropping the phone. "What is your problem? Do you like causing people emotional pain, or are you just insensitive?" Kai flinched at her words. He had not expected such a retaliation to such a simple and easy question.
"I-I'm sorry." Kai stuttered the apology, a chink in his armor. "I don't mean to bring up anything upsetting. It's just that Selene has been in a terrible car accident and has suffered major injuries. I know that she's been estranged from the family, but I thought that you may still want to–"
"We don't want anything to do with that monster." Pearl's voice dripped with malice. She was furious. "Not after everything she did to our family. She took away not one, but two members of this family. She's a menace to society."
Kai felt his breath hitch. He knew that many children in Foster Homes struggled and often rebelled, but this sounded serious. Maybe the girl he had saved was mentally insane, or had done something terrible to this family.
"If you don't mind me asking," Kai said, "What did Selene do to you?" Kai hurriedly explained himself, "I'm the person who pulled her out of the car. I never met her before the accident, and she's been in a medically induced coma for about a week."
Pearl sighed from the other end. She seemed to be more relaxed knowing that Kai was just a random citizen. "I'll tell you what happened only if you promise to leave my mother and I alone. She hates talking about these kinds of things. Her mental state is already terrible and I don't need it getting worse."
"I promise." Kai said, his stomach jittering with butterflies. He almost didn't want to know whatever Pearl was about to tell him, but he couldn't help himself. He was a curious person.
"My dad took Selene in when she was sixteen. He knew what it was like to have bad parents, though he had never been in a Foster Home. He really liked her and decided to adopt her into the family. My mother was against the entire thing, and I agreed with her. The only person besides my father who wanted Selene was my younger sister, Peony. Funnily enough, they're the two who got the worst of it from Selene.
"Peony worshipped Selene. She thought that the sun shone from everything that she did. I despised her. Call it psychic abilities, but I knew that she was a rotten one. I did not expect her to murder my sister, however. I knew she was bad, but I didn't think she was so horrible as to murder a child. My sister was only fourteen.
"There was no proof that Selene did it, but everyone knew. It only took her a less than two months before she realized that no one wanted her anymore, and so she left.
"My parents had mixed emotions about her leaving. My mother was thrilled, and while my dad wasn't too fond of the thing anymore, he still wanted to help. My mom told him not to tell anyone that she'd run away. After all, Selene was almost eighteen. When Social Services found out that she'd run away and my dad hadn't told anyone, they were furious.
"My father was charged with child neglect for not reporting Selene's disappearance and being her legal guardian. He was sentenced to ten years in prison for not wanting to keep a monster in our house anymore.
"I hope that accident hurt Selene, because she ruined my life. My mother is destroyed because of what that fiend did, and left me all alone to pick up the broken pieces of my family. Don't call again." A dull buzz filled Kai's ears, and he knew that he would never speak to Pearl Linh ever again.
***
Kai smeared ketchup onto his french fry, lathering it up until it was fifty-fifty ketchup to fry ratio. He hated eating naked french fries. Thorne, on the other hand barely tapped his three fries into his BBQ sauce. Kai didn't quite understand the sauce choice, but Thorne had something against tomatoes.
"So how did Selene murder the little sister again?" Thorne asked around a mouth of french fries. Kai squirmed at spotting the specks of food in his friend's mouth. He hated when people talked while chewing food.
Kai swallowed his single fry, taking time to answer by swigging his water. "Pearl didn't say. She just said that Selene killed her and then ran away."
Right after Kai's conversation with Pearl, he had called Thorne. The phone call had drained him and set his mind into panic mode. Kai had dished out the entire story to Thorne, who seemed to think of the entire thing as one fat joke.
"Great," Thorne deadpanned, picking up his burger. "You rescued a murderer from death. Maybe she'll kill you next." Thorne tilted his head downward in a teasing way, pointing a fry dramatically at Kai.
Rolling his eyes, Kai began to dip another fry. "The thing is, I have a hard time believing it. I don't just want to condemn her for something another person thought about her. For all we know, maybe Pearl murdered the little sister and used Selene as a cover story."
"Too cliché." Thorne said. "But I do agree with hearing Selene out before judging her. This Pearl character sounds a tad bit biased."
Kai nodded his head absently, biting his lower lip. The phone call with Pearl Linh had upset him more than he thought a phone call could. He didn't want to believe that Selene was a bad person, but something inside him yearned to learn more about the angel.
"I think I want to go to Olympia." Kai said, looking at Thorne to gage his reaction.
Thorne munched on another fry. "You must be getting overconfident with your looks then." Thorne said, his words mushed by food. "Because I'm pretty sure that girl would be more than happy to punch you in your perfect nose."
"I don't mean to visit the Linh's." Kai corrected himself. "I want to talk to the school, or maybe even some friends of Selene." Kai had been thinking about doing this even before his phone call with Pearl. He wanted to understand the person he was now connected to.
"How do you know if she even has friends? The girl sounds like a loner loser to me." Thorne wiped his mouth with a scratchy brown napkin. Kai threw him a glare. "I mean," Thorne continued. "If she doesn't have any friends here after two years of living here, why would she have any up there?"
Kai had never thought about that before. He always assumed that there must have been somebody that cared about Selene, but maybe there wasn't. Perhaps she was more alone than Kai could ever imagine.
"Everybody makes acquaintances in high school whether they like it or not." Kai rubbed his eyes. He may have been energized during his call with Pearl, but getting no sleep the night before was finally wearing on him. He needed a nap.
"Alright then, Mr. Superhero. Fight valiantly, die bravely. Go figure out your girlfriend's backstory. I'll stay here... doing nothing." Thorne sipped on his Coke, pinky up.
"Like you're getting away that easily." Kai smirked. "I need you to look out for Selene while I'm gone."
Thorne choked, spitting brown bubbles onto the tabletop. "No way. Aces and spades, I am not going to watch over your murderer girlfriend. I've sworn off all women, especially those who may want to hurt or kill me." Thorne shook his head adamantly. "You can go to Olympia and do whatever you want, Crown, but I have my own stuff."
"Come on," Kai pleaded, knowing exactly how to win this kind of battle. "I'll only be gone for a day or two, and all you have to do is talk to her for ten minutes. I just don't want her to be alone again."
"I'm pretty sure she's used to it by now." Thorne muttered under his breath, earning a blazing glare from Kai. "But alright, I'll visit her."
Kai grinned at his friend. "Thanks, mate."
"Anything for my lovestruck idiot best friend." Thorne reached across the table, beginning on Kai's fries.
Kai swatted at Thorne's hand, but he had already stolen five of his fries. "I am doing you a favor though," Kai said.
"How so? I thought that I was the one visiting your murdering angel." Thorne guffawed, shoving all five fries in his mouth at once.
"Because, my dear friend," Kai simpered. "I think your lady-charming skills needs some touching up. If anything, you're the loner loser, not Selene." Kai laughed, and Thorne glared.
Thorne stared at Kai's fries, a mischievous grin crossing his features. Kai yawned, stretching out his back and closing his eyes for a split second. By the time he looked back at the table, all of his fries were gone, and Thorne was laughing.
nerd
DOYOUNG x READER
Throughout the whole lesson, you fell asleep. You weren’t that kind of people who actually listened to the teacher.
“Today, class, I’m going to assign you into groups of 2 and you’ll be doing a group project on the history of a specific, famous, ancient building from a country. Consider yourself lucky, as you will be assigning your partner yourselves. You may begin now, but please do not make a racket. There are other people trying to educate people and being educated,” the teacher said. As you were asleep, you unknowingly had to group with a nerd with whom no one was willing to group.
The nerd, at least that’s how he’s being called constantly, placed a handwritten note on your desk whilst you were sleeping. When you woke up, you noticed the note and read it. The note wrote:
im your partner for the group project on history. meet me at the school gate at 4pm after school. - kim doyoung
You decided you’d go meet him after school. Doyoung whom you considered not a nerd, to be honest, you decided to blend in with your peers as you were actually considered popular and cool.
Walking to the gate in the hallway, you saw Doyoung standing there, in a flannel with ripped jeans, standing with his back laid on the wall and one of his foot kicking on the wall behind him. To you, he did not seem like a nerd. He actually looked great from behind, with his orange hair. If you didn’t know him, you’d think he was one of the cool people at school.
As you walked closer, you started to notice how tall he actually was. His height was ideal to you.
You slightly tapped his shoulders and he turned to you. “Hey.”
“Uh,” he simply greeted. “How about we start working on the project at my place?”
For once, you studied his face clearly. His eyes were round and big. It seemed like his eyes were sparkling under the sun. His skin was white and clear, like fresh milk.
His words snapped you away from your thoughts. “Should we go now?”
You tried to remain calm, “yeah,” you answered modestly yet plainly.
As you settled down from walking so fast, you sat down on a couch from his living room. The house was so quiet, it left you curious. “We’re the only ones here?”
Doyoung was pouring water into a glass cup. He snapped at your words and answered, “yeah. My parents are out of town and my brother is staying at his friend’s house.”
You could hear his voice more clearly and piercingly as the house was quieter and the street was not. You noticed how sweet and soothing his voice was and you could listen to it all night. No, Y/N, you thought, you can not fall for a nerd in school.
Doyoung walked to you as he placed two glass of water on the table. “Here,” he mumbled gently. His voice was a bit higher than usual.
“Should we get this started?” He suggested as he took out his laptop from his backpack. “Our assigned building is Temple of Hera, Olympia.”
“Do you know anything about it?” You asked Doyoung who was doing some research on his laptop. Trying to befriend him, you started a lame question as he was already doing research on it.
“No, not really,” he answered frankly.
You raised your eyebrows at him, “geez, I thought you’re a nerd. Guess they call you that for nothing.”
He stopped searching and started to laugh. “Is that what they call me? Oh God, I know I’m smart, but I’m not that smart. There’s something I don’t know.”
“You don’t know you’re a nerd in school?” You asked curiously. You never expected him to not know his nickname at school.
“No. No one talks to me at school, nor no one is friends with me,” he answered simply. “You’re probably the only one I’ve talked for more than 5 sentences.”
“Tragic,” you mumbled, trying to not let him hear your voice. Then, you raised your volume, “so you have no friends at school? How do you survive?”
“Books and music are my only friends at school,” he answered.
Considering Doyoung was actually a cool person, you wanted to befriend him. But everyone else at school did not think the same way. You didn’t want to seem not cool at school so you wanted to keep your distance.
“Do you think so, Y/N?” Doyoung asked you as he turned his head to you. He noticed a half sleeping, half awake Y/N almost drooling. Doyoung only chuckled and gave a sigh jokingly. “Can’t believe she’s dozing off already,” he mumbled.
“Guess I’ll have to do this alone tonight,” he said to himself. Then, he noticed a fully sleeping Y/N resting her head on his shoulder.
“Ah, cute,” he whispered to himself as he softly ran his fingers through your hair. “Why are you doing things to my heart?”
Doyoung shut down his laptop and rested his head on the edge of the couch. “Ah, Y/N, I’m lucky I’m assigned to you.”
As he breathed deeply, his shoulders moved a little which woke you up. Your eyes were slowly opening and then you realized your head was on his shoulder. You wanted to lift your head up but his shoulder was very comfortable and warm.
Before you wanted to say something, Doyoung said it first. “I wish you knew how I feel,” he sighed. You could hear that he was smiling through his words.
“Ah, what the heck... What am I doing? I should be focusing on our project, not you,” he chuckled. Resting his head on yours, you had this weird feeling in your stomach.
“I really wish you know how I feel for you. Sometimes, despite how I’m invisible in your eyes, I just want to hug you and hold your hand,” Doyoung confessed in a soft tone which made you flustered. You remained silent as you wanted to hear more.
“This sounds so chiqué but it’s true. I don’t have like a huge crush on you but it’s definitely not a small one.”
“I like you,” he added.
Wanting to laugh but yet you were blushing. You couldn’t help it so you sat up straight and looked at him. “Aw, that’s so sweet,” you cooed with your hands cupping his cheeks.
You could feel his cheeks getting redder and hotter. “Ah, you heard?”
You nodded, hands still not leaving his cheeks.
Doyoung placed his hands on yours to hid the blushing and hid his face overall. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry you heard all those.”
“Don’t worry, you’re so cute,” you cooed once more and leaned in closer to his face while squishing his cheeks.
Doyoung responded with an Ah~ and tried to hid his face due to embarrassment. The only thing you did was giggle.
Then you removed your hands from his face and threw your arms around his neck. Resting your head on his shoulders again, you sighed in relief. “I like you, too, Doyoung,” you mumbled.
Doyoung did not reply. He was in shock and you could feel it. “I’ve only known you for a few hours but you got me deep, boy,” you chuckled.
He tittered and placed his hands on your waist.
“How about I stay for tonight? My parents aren’t home as well,” you suggested as you pulled back to see his reaction. Leaving Doyoung’s lips parted, he nodded. You awed cutely as his reaction and hugged him tighter this time.
After 2 hours of research of the building, you both were tired and decided to have some sleep. Doyoung was already lying down on the couch you two were sitting. As you stood up, wanting to sleep somewhere else, Doyoung grabbed your wrist and pulled you back to him. You were surprised and fell into his arms.
“Sleep with me tonight,” he whispered to your ears. His voice was music to you. Nodding firmly, you rested your head on his chest and fell asleep with him wrapping his arms on behind your neck and waist and yours around his torso.
