I'm just saying this because I'm a sucker for the idea of Marik looking at femme fatales in movies and confidently going like "I can do That. How hard could it be?" and then unfortunately his first target is a diehard card game nerd so he must employ unorthodox strategies. Ugh the Celebrimbor and Annatar stuff this episode was SO GOOD! Tell me where is Elrond though, I feel like I haven’t seen him since episode 2🥲 hopefully the next couple of episodes will make up for the Elrond lack.

I’d love to hear your more in depth thoughts about this season so far sometime, no pressure of course! But you always have such balanced and knowledgable opinions on this show. I’m liking the season so far, but have some major problems with it still and have come to the conclusion that it’s probably never going to be what I want it to be, and that’s ok! I do love the community around it though, and reading everyone’s thoughts and theories, and I love your blog!

I'm super late to responding to this but holy god yeah. Just in general the Eregion plotline is carrying this entire season. Though the Numenor plotline is doing a lot of interesting things, too! Thank you so much for the ask.

Under the cut for potential spoilers (I am not being super specific in this at all though, but I want to be safe!)

As for some Season 2 opinions, I'm trying to withhold a lot of judgement until we reach the finale, but there have been some things they've done/lines they've chosen to use which are rather...how shall I put this...lore breaking? I will probably have to do a rewatch of the series and take notes. There are certain moments which stand out to me (most of them being in the uh. Really, really, really bad Rhun plotline. I want to like the Stranger & Poppy and Nori, I really do, but it's just...not. good). A couple lines said by Cirdan and moments in the Lindon-focused episode also come to mind. It's frustrating because the writers seem to grasp so many things about the lore and Middle Earth and Tolkien's themes -- and in general they do a good job! But there are a few moments where they miss the mark so widely that it's honestly lore-breaking - much of that has to do with choices they're making regarding the nature of Ainur and uh, the rings, but again I think I'll have to do a rewatch and take notes on the parts that really irk me to be able to explain myself properly. My criticisms in that regard are mostly vague right now.

But I love what they're doing with the dwarves. I adore what they're doing with orcs. I love the characterization of Elrond (though I have no doubt that a huge chunk - at least 70% if not more has to do with Rob being the one who's playing him). And of course the exploration of gaslighting and abuse within the Eregion plotline is so well-written that it's astounding to me. I love that they are being so clear that Sauron is a manipulative, truly evil asshole. They're not making excuses for him. They're not trying to romanticize things or soften things, neither do they try to excuse his behavior in interviews and bonus content either. Sauron sucks. He's a manipulative abuser and I'm so relieved that this is the direction they went with him. Sure, he's sexy as hell while he's doing it, but...how else can I put this...they're not turning that sexiness into an excuse, you know? It just makes it that much more unsettling and scary how sexy and charismatic he is.

Also from a production perspective I'm so pleased to see just how much more time, budget, and allowance was given to the props and costuming department! The thing is -- it's not that the costumes last season were bad, necessarily, but it was painfully obvious that the (immensely skilled, if you look at the roster!) costuming department simply wasn't given enough time and budget to make anything competitive. And while I hate that the show has been forced into competition with other fantasy shows (House of the Dragon, cough cough), it's simply a reality that people are comparing the two, and House of the Dragon's costuming had, thus far, simply been far superior in terms of tailoring, structure, and quality of fabric. They're not really super comparable (Game of Thrones has always gone for prop/costuming realism -- taking more direct inspiration from historical fashion, vs the Rings of Power's art department clearly taking inspiration from Romantic and Baroque art). I'm really pleased to see that they've stuck to their art direction while being obviously given the appropriate time to create something of higher quality. The difference between the fabrics and tailoring from S1 to S2 (as well as the wig quality, holy shit), is just astronomical.

This season in general just feels like a massive upgrade to season one. I loved season one. I didn't really think it was very good, but it was fun. Whereas season two I'm slowly transitioning into "this is good. this is well made" (with the unfortunate exceptions of Rhun and certain moments in Lindon, but that again comes down to writing which bafflingly continues to be a weak point. I say baffling because now the writers have proved to me that they are capable of writing some truly incredible stuff via the Eregion arc. So I simply don't understand how we got the Eregion arc alongside uh. Some really glaringly awful writing in the Rhun arc. And it's such a shame because the art direction and production in Rhun is so good. I wish the writing lived up to it).

I'm a bit nervous for the time budget for the finale, but I'm withholding judgement until we have it in our hands.

Anyway thanks for giving me the opportunity to ramble! I have more thoughts for sure, but this is what comes to my mind off the top of my head lol.

zero escape fan here:

if you want to play it yourself, i recommend playing 999 first on an emulator and using the ds version. 999 has a remaster that is sold with vlr and cant be bought seperately, so i like to think of it as a sort of "test run", and then you can get vlr on steam or whatever.

additionally, in the remaster they screw with the writing a bit? like, they change it from 2 screens at once to 2 screens you have to toggle. a LOT of letsplayers play on adventure mode, which ONLY has them talking and none of the important details present, so they have to make characters point out the obvious and it just sorta ruins the flow. if they play novel mode [which has both dialouge and the narration], it comes off as just constantly repeating itself. the worst part is that youll most likely have to look for playthroughs that are almost a decade old if you want to watch the original ds version as a playthrough— so i think its best to play that one yourself.

vlr and ztd dont have these issues, however, so feel free to watch those as playthroughs :) im new to your blog, so i dont know where you stand on the "ill only buy a game if i REALLY wanna play it and ill usually just watch a playthrough" to "if im interested in a game, ill buy it myself and play it and use letsplayers for recommendations" scale, but it seems like youre on the "only buy if necessary" end from what ive seen so far. im just trying to give advice :)

[and if youre iffy about emulating or dont want to "pirate" a game, nintendo has stopped production of this game and the consoles it plays on, so this is the only way to play this game unless you want to shell out at least 800 bucks for a new ds/3ds and a legit cartridge. the remaster takes 999 from what id call a masterpiece to just a good game, and ive played through both versions of the game 100% and the remaster got me LAUGHING in serious situations just because of the writing. the ds version is definitely the way to go for a first playthrough, at least in my opinion.]

And yeah, you've absolutely hit the nail on the head with the ''only buy if necessary'' XD I don't exactly come from a place with the income buy video games or the consoles needed to play them myself so easily, so Let's Plays it is! Which isn't too bad since I really like reacting to the game along with others, so I guess there's a silver lining there. Although I did hear about some issues with 999. Something about being sorta lost in translation too? NicoB's videos are exactly a decade old and the original ds version if memory serves, so I should be in clear with most of these issues. Good to know that the other two games are free to watch without difficulty at least.

I'm currently at the point where Akane and Junpei are investigating door 4 (with Lotus and Santa) and it's definitely super engaging at the moment. The investigation style really reminds me of DRA2 chapter 4's one, which was my absolute favourite investigation in the entire series (along with V3 chapter 4), so I'm super excited to see more of it! I love how the characters bounce off each other so well. I LIVE for Snake's snark and Akane's nerdiness, they're so lovely. And Nico's commentary during the more serious situations had me CACKLING so bad, especially how dirty he does the 9th dude every time it's amazing.

Stranger's suggestion or not, I very much appreciate the sentiment! I definitely feel like this will be a game I'll be stuck with for a while, but if it's already this fun now I think I'll be happy to stay ^-^ I'll be sure to keep this in mind! Also, the corollary of this: That Eleanor Roosevelt quote, "No one can hurt you without your consent." All too often when we feel discomfited by something, we allow ourselves to immediately give up our power to the thing/person, especially when we do not feel secure and confident in ourselves and our identities. We want external validation that we are Real, but Real only ever comes from inside you.

Example: If a random lady at the supermarket misgenders me -- even if she does so maliciously! -- it doesn't make me an iota less nonbinary. I'm nonbinary because *I* say so; her opinion has very little to do with me. She might as well waste her breath all day long trying to tell the sky that it is green for all the good that it'll do changing objective facts. Additionally, if she's so bigoted that she wants to try to ruin my day with kindergarten name-calling, then that's rather sad and pathetic of her, but it's not my problem to deal with, nor anything that I have to spend my energy on. Getting angry at her for the purposes of forcing her to validate my identity is... well, it's silly, isn't it? If a bully on the playground calls you a stinky butthead, you don't burst into tears and say "Take it back, I'm NOT a stinky butthead!!!!" because that means that you've implicitly agreed to the rules of their game, in which you might be a stinky butthead. You take back power when you change the rules, or when you refuse to play their game. You smile and walk away, and that makes them madder than anything else because that sort of person just wants to get a rise out of you so they can have a cheap thrill and feel like they're winning.

If someone tries to make you uncomfortable with yourself, you can simply choose not to let them. Though yes, I know it is not actually "simple" -- it takes a LOT of practice. When you first start trying this, it is okay if you're seething on the inside, or upset. This is a skill you can build up slowly. Eventually, you become the walking avatar of "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."

The factor of scale means "if it's one individual yelling at you (another individual), you can just simper 'god bless you' or 'Jesus died for our sins' at them (if you're in America, they're probably Christian, and this particular flavor of Christian will Hate This because they cannot help but recognize it as a winning chess move in the interaction) and walk off". Scale does NOT mean "If a politician is trying to pass a bigoted law that will harm you and your friends, you can just ignore that, haha."

The factor of impact means, "If one stranger at the supermarket is being verbally rude to you (another individual), you can just think to yourself 'hm, dunno what's going on with this person but whatever it is, it's is not as important to me as choosing a box of cereal' and return to choosing a box of cereal." It does NOT mean "if someone you know who has power to materially impact your life (ie: a boss who could come up with fake reasons to fire you) is starting to pick fights because they're a bigot, you can just shrug it off." It also does NOT mean "if someone is coming at you with the intent to cause physical harm, just put your earphones in and turn on some chill low-fi beats to get murdered to."

Don't get murdered. Do stand up against institutional injustice. But also remember that you are an individual, interfacing with other individuals, and sometimes choosing a box of cereal is more important than giving a Local Karen the satisfaction of pissing you off.

There would definitely be a bit of an intervention with everyone to talk about the issue from "before". Maybe some what after everyone had gotten redressed and suddenly didn't feel like bathing anymore. After that everyone seem...awkward. No one knew exactly how to continue on with the revelation,so they all just stayed quite.At first she mistook this as a sign that everyone handled it well,she tried to continue business as always.While everyone was packing up to head out,she'd suddenly feel everyone's eyes.... Looking at her. When she turned she everyone just minding their own business.Maybe it was all just in herhead.The rest of the walk seem almost dead quiet.The once cheer mood of chatter was now replaced with an awkward tension filled with only small side glances,little quiet whispering from behind and an inability to look her in the face when she tried chatting with anyone.Is this what it was going to be like from now on?No of course not.They wouldn't let something as trivial as this get in the way of their relationship,right?they were still friends,right?

This is beautifully thought out and it was a joy to read. I had to read it out loud out of fear that I would miss something entirely but I'm glad I did.

I would imagine it to be difficult to be on her period simply because when you're traveling there's no supplies to help out or lessen the situation! No cotton, no pain killers, not a lot of hot water to begin with... And yeah, she wouldn't say anything about it because a soldier wouldn't have the time to take care of it, let alone a hero.

She would also be the most used to blood on her clothes out of the group I think at this point. Just takes it upon her self to clean their clothes because they never seem to be able to get all of it and they don't know what they're doing even if she were to tell them how.

The boys think it's some magic technique but no.... it's just experience.

But the reader here that you mentioned would have had good teachers for burning it into her brain that it doesn't matter what body she has or what other people say because she the hero. She was born for this and there's no pleasing any one anyway. the best way out of this is to do the job and make sure you can get out alive.

What I want of the last paragraph is for her to get a little mad and question what the hell s wrong with everyone and then for someone to reply that it would have been disrespectful to look without direct permission because she would have deserved better than that. Like, they're fine with each other because they all have the same parts so like no big deal, but for them so openly show her themselves, verses her being seen openly.

I think it'll be a mixed bag of them being embarrassed that they were seen and that they saw her.

I think the ones least effected by it would be Wind, Warrior and Hyrule. Hyrule, because there's no like no people in his world so he doesn't have the same perception as the others, verses Wind who would probably be weird in the beginning but promptly not think too much on it because he has a sister at home and would help her bath when she was younger, verses Tetra who has had multiple shirts torn in the middle of battle- so who cares?

I was originally going to put Warrior as one of the most effected but I've played the game.... There are so many female warriors so if they got hit in the boob and needed attention then you take care of it. no questions asked and you move on with your day end of story.

The most effected would probably be Time, Twilight and Sky.

Time and Sky because- holy cow, I have a significant other, what am I going to say if they find out I saw another naked woman? Nothing. That's what. I'm a dead man if they ever find out.

Twilight because he was raised with his respect woman juice for breakfast and would have gladly turned away and oh my god- my mom is not going to like that I just didn't do anything this entire time and she's going to think that I just stared like some degenerate and what do I do now?

The bus bumps gently along the road, one turn at a time, in a way that is vaguely nauseating. Stiles can finally understand Jared a little better: the endless repetitive circles down the mountain are enough to make him want to puke, just for something to do.

Or maybe it’s not the bus—maybe it’s the fact that their lives are, once again, interwoven with the supernatural; dangerous, deadly supernatural. Because, yeah, Stiles may be a pessimist but he’s also often right, and someone is going to die if they don’t find a way out of this situation, this tug of war between two unstoppable powers. A few months ago, he would have wondered why that was always the case: can’t they be an active cause in whatever’s going down in Beacon Hills, for once, instead of the helpless rag doll tugged this way and that by the two enemies? The rag doll is always the one who pays the most in the end, in Stiles’ opinion: it’s simply physics.

Okay, so it’s definitely not the bus.

He tries looking out of the window, but the endless desert landscape doesn’t help: all he sees is that they’re heading back towards Beacon Hills, towards fighting and death and sacrifices. Towards war, if Lydia is right—and of course she’s right.

He tries to glance subtly above his shoulders, to check up on Scott, as he’s done about, oh, thirty thousands time since the previous evening, which, really, was just more proof that he may be a pessimist but at least he has reasons to be. For once, he hates being right.

Scott still smells of gasoline, even after changing his clothes and quickly washing up in the bathroom while Stiles gathered their bags. He used to like the smell: it reminded him of his crappy Jeep and the long afternoons spent fixing it up with his father, before they gave it up as a bad job and just brought it to the shop. Now he feels like he might suffocate if he doesn’t stop breathing it.

It’s worse for Scott himself, but he’s characteristically stoic in the seat behind Stiles. Although—it’s been a while since Stiles felt him move and accidentally knee the back of his seat.

He tries to turn around subtly when a hand on his arm stops him.

“They’re sleeping,” Lydia whispers, handing him a small compact. With the mirror open like that, it’s easy to spy on the seats behind them and to see Allison and Scott, soundly asleep. Their bodies are angled differently, away from each other, but even an outside eye can see the secret yearning in their poses, silently reaching for each other.

It’s infuriating.

“I swear to God,” Stiles mutters under his breath, barely aware that he’s spoken.

“I know.” Lydia rolls her eyes and smiles when he looks at her in surprise. “I want to shake them or lock them in a closet until they work things out.”

“That’s why Seven Minutes in Heaven was invented, I think.”

“Oh definitely—resolve sexual tension, not create it where it didn’t exist before.”

“Don’t forget the crushing humiliation two-thirds of the assembly will feel.”

“How could I?”

Stiles lets out a small laugh, almost a breath.

“I hate this game.” Then he remembers: “Uh, sorry.”

“Mmmm.” Lydia inspects her hair, brushing it between her fingers. It’s a mess, so unlike usual, but Stiles hasn’t been able to get the image out of his head all morning. “That’s how Jackson and I got together.”

“Yeah I know—That’s why—Forget it.”

“I hate this stupid game too.”

Stiles wants to smile, but the victory doesn’t feel as sweet when the casualties are Lydia Martin and her happiness.

Silence falls on them for a while.

“How long to Beacon Hills? I left my book in Allison’s car, I can’t believe it.”

“About six hours,” Stiles says, faux enthusiastic. “You’re going to have a very deep appreciation for bus seats and imitation leather.”

“I’m sweating through my dress,” Lydia deadpans. “And I already spent one night too many on them. That seems unlikely.”

“Good thing you’re not any teams.”

Lydia pretends to count on her fingers.

“I hate sports. The debate team is a bunch of entitled pricks who think their masculinity has to be sacrificed when they’re proven wrong and value their dicks too much for that.”

Stiles waits a beat.

“I thought you were gonna keep going,” he says. “Your tone was very confusing.”

“No, that’s it.”

“Colleges will fight to have you anyway,” he says.

It’s just a throwaway compliment: truth presented in a nice way to give to Lydia when she feels down, a skill Stiles has practiced and perfectioned since middle school. He doesn’t mean anything to come of it other than a small smile on Lydia’s face, the way she stands straighter for a second and lifts her head just so, accepting the praise without saying it. Lydia, Stiles noticed in his never-ending quest to understand her, has two ways of dealing with applause: blunt acceptance of the obvious, a flip of her hair and contempt for the worthless praise; or, when it matters, silent thankfulness that cuts Stiles deeper than blades.

Stiles has long been the butt of the former; he’s recently started to get glimpses of the latter, and he thinks he can never stop wanting more.

Lydia bites her lips instead, and looks down.

“I’ve already received word from Stanford,” she says.

“Lydia, that’s amaz—” Stiles begins automatically. “Wait, what?”

“I followed a two-week course over the summer, yes?” Stiles nods. He remembers the long interruption into what had become their routine, meeting and discussing things they didn’t—still don’t—grasp fully, looking for answers that weren’t there. “I’ll have enough credits to graduate at the end of the year,” she says. “They said they were interested in having me after that.”

Stiles remembers to close his mouth after a while.

“That’s incredible,” he says. “Are you—are you going to take it?”

“I don’t know. That’s why I haven’t said anything. It’s still early, and who knows how I’ll feel at the end of the year?”

“You might get better offers then,” Stiles says. “Not that I’m telling you not to do it! But, uh, that’s not an easy decision.”

Lydia hums. “I want out of this town,” she says.

“I know.”

“That’s the way to do it.”

Stiles does know; he knows it desperately, distantly: he can run to the other side of the country, but as long as his father and the McCalls live here, he won’t be getting out, not really. Lydia, however—if anyone can leave this town behind and spread her wings over the world, it’s her.

Selfishly, he wishes she won’t take the offer. Is it wrong to deprive the world of Lydia Martin to keep her closer to him, where he matters?

“What did your mother say?” he asks instead.

“Nothing. She doesn’t know.” Surprise is fleeting, then Lydia leans closer to him and says: “No one knows and I intend to keep it that way.”

“Are you going to kill me now that you’ve told me?” Stiles jokes weakly, to hide the overwhelming feeling of being Lydia’s confidant.

“There’s enough people dead in this town as it is,” Lydia mutters. She digs her palms in her eyes and rubs, leaving intact the dark circles under her eyes. “Just—please don’t tell anyone.”

“I can keep a secret,” Stiles offers.

“I know.”

She smiles then, and Stiles likes her so helplessly that he returns the gesture, absurd as it is.

“You should sleep,” he says when she doesn’t manage to hide a yawn. “We’ve efficiently ruined the weekend.”

Lydia nods and doesn’t say anything for a long time. Stiles turns back the window, watching her fall asleep through the washed-out reflection on the glass. It feels like spying, or maybe protection. He can’t discern the two, but he knows that after yesterday, the least he can do is watch his friends when they sleep. He’s done it last night too, when they were all spread out on the crackly seats and he couldn’t calm his heart or his nerves. He thinks he might never fully stop doing it.

He doesn’t realize he’s spaced out until he feels a weight on his shoulder. He almost jumps out of his skin when hair tickles his neck; for once, though, his body doesn’t betray him, and he can blink at the curve of Lydia’s cheek with outward calm. She’s slumped all over him, her head fitting right on top of his shoulder, her hair fanning out on his chest. The little breaths she lets out are hot against his neck.

Stiles actually has to bite his fist not to shout or move. He feels a grin stretching around it, but he hides it with his hand, throwing as many glances at Lydia’s sleeping form as at the scenery unfolding by his window.

It’s not perfect: Lydia slumps a bit more on his arm after almost thirty minutes—that’s when his limbs go numb, and his brain kicks in overdrive. Not moving is torture, his arm is cramping, and he’s so thirsty that his head is pounding; unfortunately, the bottle is in his bag at his feet, and he can’t bend down enough to retrieve it.

In the end, he dozes out against the window, the rattling from the road turning his brain to mush. The next pit stop awakens Lydia, and Stiles can feel her sitting up quickly when she realizes how she’s fallen asleep. He wants to turn and tell her he doesn’t mind, that she’s welcome to sleep on his shoulder anytime—really—, wants to ask her if she slept well and enough, wants to turn around and crow with Scott about this one step forward in their friendship.

He pretends to wake up when Scott calls his name, instead, and ignore the knowing look he sends his way.

Now is not the time, he tells himself sternly as he stretches out his legs with relief. Lydia is right: there are too many deaths in Beacon Hills; next to a vengeful Darach and a pack of ruthless alphas, what does Lydia’s head on Stiles’ shoulder mean? It won’t happen again, anyway, and Stiles should just cherish it; so he does, and he pretends he’s not disappointed when Scott drags him to sit next to him when they board again.

Four hours later, they’re back in the familiar parking lot of Beacon Hills high school.
