Jack manifold tries so hard to get someone to notice him, whether that be in a negative light or a positive one, he doesn't care. during Tommy's exile, he steals "hotter girl" (a fake girlfriend that Tommy built out of a jack o lantern and logs) from him, and rubs it in his face, desperately wanting a reaction from him.

he gets no reaction, Tommy simply does not care. Tommy is apathetic towards Jack before saying he can pretend to care, that he can lie and say that he does care. Jack says this will only make him sad.

Tommy and Jack are so tragically similar in the way that they just want to be recognized. they want to be seen, and they don't care if it's in a bad way.

they both try to get revenge on people for wronging them, but when Jack does it, no one seems to care.

if Jack manifold were the one to burn George's house down, he would not have gotten exiled. dream didn't exile Tommy because he cares about George - dream exiled Tommy because it was Tommy.

jack repeatedly tries to get revenge on people by putting clay in their houses and saying it's from dream, but no one ever cares about it. it's just a minor inconvenience for them.

Tommy is the scapegoat of the SMP - and Jack is the one that is always ignored.

they both try to get any type of attention, they're so desperate for someone to care. Tommy gets that attention, and he only realizes he doesn't like it after the fact.

jack never gets that attention.

jack sees Tommy getting all this attention, he sees him doing the exact same things as him but getting the result he never gets, and he gets upset.

during the season one finale, he specifically aims the nukes to Tommy's house. it's a desperate last attempt, maybe if he gets rid of the person getting more attention, he'll get the recognition he so very craves.

tl;dr: jack manifold and tommyinnit are so similar in a very tragic way and i have brain rot over it

Anthony's chest rises and falls. His fingers are tangled with hers, and his thumb strokes gently over her pinkie. "No," he says, like he's thought about it. "I mean, we had our good moments. Being with you was always...always good. But..."

She squeezes his fingers. Lets him know that she's listening, that there's no rush. There's no rush anymore.

"You always had one foot out. I could feel it. I could feel myself losing you and I just drank more to numb that pain and it made you want me even less." His voice is tight, but she knows it's okay. They've talked about it so much, how he doesn't blame her for leaving, how she doesn't blame him for struggling. It just wasn't the right time, but they never stopped loving each other. Not really. "And now you're here. Like, I know you're here. I know you'll answer when I call and I know I'll see you when I come home. And so, fuck, it's so much better."

So a couple of nights ago I was reading Flesh Wound by @vintagedean, which I’ve read a couple of times in the year it’s been up, before realizing, to my great shame, that I’d never left Vin a comment --- so here is that comment, adapted into a brief recommendation.

I have no prior knowledge of selkie lore or, to be honest, any particular interest in folktale retellings at large. I am, however, very interested in 1) the ways in which desire/love changes a person’s body (e.g. pregnancy, but there are also things like infections or deformities, etc.) and 2) more specifically with these characters, how they talk to each other and what they say. These selkie sores, which are described in sparse but impressively vivid prose (in a way that made me think of leprosy), are the physical manifestation of Dean's devotion to his dad. What's more is that they both understand that this is the case, and they speak about it obliquely, for most of the story, in the service of advancing a lie about the extent of the hurt John is causing (and indeed himself experiencing)— until the wonderful (and heartbreaking) closing shot.

Throughout we see Dean articulate to himself the desire to leave (recalling "I had dreams of my own, but Dad needed me"), and choose repeatedly to stay even as his condition gets worse. As Dean gets worse, so does John and so does the anxiety about contagion (though depending on your interpretation, contagion may be entirely impossible; and in fact, John himself is the source of the contagion: “And [Dean] then hisses when John’s hand reaches for a different part of him”). The closing visual of the story captures this anxiety perfectly, as well as their tragic inability to put an end to their "secret" even in the face of horror of its direct result*: John is fucking Dean with his "torso raised to avoid the worst of the remaining sores on Dean's chest," hinting at both a concern for Dean's comfort, but also John's own discomfort with interacting with these sores in a sexual context, despite having tended them before— he’s only involved insofar that he means to help Dean. And yet the disgust doesn’t hinder him entirely from seeking that closeness— because of the profundity of his love for Dean? I think that’s always true, and at least always partially at play. But that love is tinged with a desperation that comes out in a really vulnerable exchange, the kind of confession that naturally would compel Dean to stay but which also mirrors Dean’s own discomfort at being seen by his father. The one-sidedness of their back and forth feels so true to these characters: they’re crushingly intimate and vulnerable and that’s what allows them to lie to each other and to trap each other. It comes down at the end to Dean’s willingness to say whatever his dad wants to hear, to choose comfort over truth, and John's choice to believe what he wants and to hold Dean to it. Great stuff! Everyone go read it!
