there was an article that was an interview with john epler about different influences in the game, and you see a lot of comparisons made in other articles. LOTR, DND. Bet you can name those. Maybe you read God of War (2018) and FF. but there are so many influences and comparisons that you just will not get if you don't play other games. if you don't love video games and know where RPGs have been and where they are now.
if you want to talk about larian and bioware, look at dos2 and those characters and look at inquisition and veilguard. if you want to talk about combat, you need to compare Owlcat (the BEST turn based/pause and play CRPG studio IMO) and Larian (who do a really good CRPG don't get me wrong, but they admit themselves that they sacrificed a lot of that in BG3 to cater to wotc - and BG3 their focus was on cinematics, not combat) and God of War (pure action, but made itself incredibly accessible!) and Assassin's Creed (emphasis on flashy takedowns and dynamic close combat) and FF (deep progression that feels like it matters and synergy with a party).
these games are all made by a swirling pool of a lot of the same people who talk to each other - work together - learn from each other - play each other's games - grew up playing games. games are a huge medium with so many angles to them, and constraints, and it's not just "oh well there's no such thing as invisibility or teleportation really in Dragon Age but we made the DAI rogue go 'invisible' because how else do we show 'stealth'"... It's constraints in how you structure stories, how you posit choices to the player, the difference between playing a character like Arthur Morgan or Kratos or Eivor vs Hawke vs the Divinity main characters.
there are so many other games that are out there, so many other types, that will influence people who grew up with the last 20-30 years of games...and who are now making them! making this one! made this one!
so yeah... if you miss out on video games as a cultural storytelling medium - if you are blind to the structures that make it up - then... you're making your predictions with one eye closed.
man. idk. i love video games so much. the nuts and bolts under the hood with math and physics, the writing, the art, and the user metrics/consumer behaviors that shape them.

Tumblr is the only site where having a small follower count and no existing social structure is liberating. Somehow the void howls slightly different over here

•A Normal Fucking Story that Doesn't Make You Sob
obviously the only right option is the one I can't recover from for many moons

Balmoral does fully blame Foirtchern for Faolan's fate. Like yes, she did get thrown down there but he fully believes she could have changed things. She was, at least in his understanding of her, a Fateweaver. He does think that his existence narrowed and eventually closed that path and of course, he blames his 'father' for even proposing it in the first place.
Especially because he is so sure in his head that Foirtchern did not give a shit of her chances. Odds are together, they could have escaped. But he doubted that Foirtchern wanted to remain any longer than he had to. If he had to screw over some fae to do so, so be it. And even more...it's actually interesting because Bal has his own idea of what Foirtchern is like and he's never met his Abyssborn parent until his appearance recently. But it so happens, he's a lot of what Bal did imagine.
Which probably contributes to his disdain of his parent. Like being cause for Faolan's suffering alone was already terrible terms with Bal. Side note that yes, Faolan was just as terrible of a parent as Foirtchern to Bal. However a combination of an innate loyalty as a Harbinger to her and sort of seeing an 'idealized' version of her in his memory, Bal doesn't view her anywhere as terribly as Foirtchern.
The other part of dislike, I am finding, is because Balmoral can see himself within Foirtchern. And he hates it. He hates it so much. Because he's seeing it as 'this is probably how all of them (his enemies, those he's tricked, etc) view me' and honestly? He can't blame them for not liking him if that's the case. He would want to be rid of himself too.
