I haven’t updated on here in a while and I need to so this can still serve as my diary years later when my memory finally gives out. anyways
went to adjacent fest in may. 10/10 fest. always nice to be recognized and pointed out by the midtown guys :’) rip midtown always in my heart and ready for more shows whenever.
taylor swift in june. haven’t seen her live since she OPENED for keith urban in 2009 where I almost met her after the show at the buses. cried my eyes out sorry guys
TAI/FOB show at wrigley. before the show me & caitlyn had the nicest little talk with mike carden in a coffee shop. he asked if he was a loser for his coffee order. talked about the most random things. he looked so good. show was incredible!!!! I didn’t think it was possible for any other FOB show to be better than the metro show in jan but it was. GINASFS!!!!!!
flew to TX to see FTSK twice. genuinely was like one of the last pieces I needed to like heal teenage me. I walked into the venue of the first show and was there less than 5 minutes when caleb saw me and excused himself from a convo to come up to me. we were smiling so big and hugged and he said to me “I’m so glad you’re here” as we hugged and we had a quick catch up of just asking how the other has been. opening band was on so we couldn’t go in depth and I didn’t get to talk to him the rest of the weekend but that’s honestly okay. cried my fucking eyes out this weekend. breathe carolina was incredible!!!
then to LA for the two FOB shows at BMO, which turned into three FOB shows in 26 hours because a friend was able to get me into the KROQ show. TAI was incredible. FOBx3 was incredible. the KROQ show was so scary because they were so close with like less than 100 people in the room it was so SCARY. almost made my LA trip a full week just because I hadn’t been in a while and wanted more time in LA and my last night was going to be the emo nite that the gabilliam reunion happened at but I decided against it because I’m a MORONNNNN and was trying to be responsible when planning the trip…… had I known what I was going to miss………ugh I can’t even speak about it
THEN FOB at somerset which was still fun despite the almost cancellation. went with my sister who got me into FOB and it had been 17 years since her last FOB show :’) sad it was cut short because a lot of the older songs she was excited for for cut but we still had so much fun.
next on the agenda: FOB in boston & forest hills. movielife in boston. PARADISE FEARS (!!!!!!!!) in chicago & nashville. WWWYF day 1 & 2 in october. some more random shows between now and then, like the jonas brothers 3 times (because I got invited by 3 different groups of people LMAO), TWY, BLG & TSS, jeff rosenstock, the happy fits, idk what else anymore.
very happy w life, very happy I can honor young me by doing things like this and that those things still make me this happy, and that the people I looked up to as a teenager are still just as kind to me as they were 10-15 years ago, or just as kind as I had hoped they’d be as a teenager. turmax forever. midtown saves forever. santi forever. okay that’s all bye
#shows#or is it just#show#I don’t even remember my own tags anymore!!!!!#idk I have so many TAI/FOB/midtown videos rn if anyone wants any plz let me know

2020 in review
tagged by @adz a few days ago but just getting around to it, thanks bud :)
top 5 movies i saw this year:
I had a letterboxd but deleted it and of course didn’t write down what i had on it beforehand but in chronological order: 1. Uncut Gems (2019) 2. Purple Rain (1984) 3. The Departed (2006) 4. Aliens (1986) 5. Boogie Nights (1997)
i didn’t get around to watching a ton of new new movies this year, in fact, i think the only movie i saw in theaters this year was Uncut Gems, like right at the beginning of January.
Top 5 tv shows i watched this year
1. The Sopranos (seriously a life changing endeavor) 2. The Wire (not finished yet) 3. Community (not finished yet) 4. Bojack Horseman (I’m pretty sure I rewatched the whole thing and finished the last season..earlier this year? Doesn’t feel like it lol) 5. Frasier (finished after watching on and off for 2 years)
Top 5 songs of 2020: 1. Kerosene! by Yves Tumor 2. Honeymoon Ashtray by Jeff Rosenstock 3. Deadlines (Hostile) by Car Seat Headrest 4. Relay by Fiona Apple 5. I Admire You by Turtlenecked
Top 5 books I read in 2020: In chronological order again:
-Cured by Lol Tolhurst (memoir by The Cure’s founding drummer) -The Universe Replied: An Oral History of “Romance is Boring” by Los Campesinos! by Brendan Mattox -Protest in Arms (an old book from the 60s about the Irish Revolution) -Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison -This Is Happening: Radiohead’s “Kid A” and The Beginning of the 21st Century by Steven Hyden -Raise High the Roofbeams, Carpenters/Seymour, an Introduction by JD Salinger (nearly finished this one) Really want to read more in 2021, i have a stack of books from college that i “read” but need to actually, y’know, read! So that’ll be my starting point
Top 5 positive things that happened to me in 2020: 1. Got a job in my field that I really love and makes an actual difference in people’s lives 2. Getting to spend so much time with Emily during lockdown and listening to a bunch of Steely Dan 3. Getting around to a bunch of records and tv shows I hadn’t gotten to yet (working from home has given me the luxury of basically listening to music all day) 4. Getting to see some of my friends safely throughout the year 5. Recording a Rilo Kiley with my friends Keeghan and Zoe for a great comp and getting said comp featured in fucking Rolling Stone! I kinda keep forgetting that was a real thing that happened!!
This wasn’t the year I expected it to be at all, obviously, and I definitely had some personal low points, as well as watching the people in my country fight tooth and nail for what’s right and work hard to resist this virus (can’t wait for that vaccine!) I’m glad I’m still standing after all of it, it’s good to reflect and also be excited for the future, at any rate, let’s hope 2021 is better than 2020. Happy new year, everyone!
I’ll tag @ondelay, @moohampshire, @kvdragonslayer @7rc and anyone else who wants to do this :)

my favorite records of the 2010s pt 1 (the less great stuff/honorable mentions)
Neither this post or its followup are going to be in any particular order, however all the records I talk about here are, in my opinion, not as good as the records i will talk about in my part 2. they’re all fantastic but these ones slightly a little less fantastic than the ones in my “top 10″. none of this is based on stuff like 'influence' or whatever other critics base their lists on, this is solely how much I enjoyed these records. And keep in mind, I'm only human, I havent listened to a good lot of records I've heard others describe as top 10 worthy, these are just records I found and that I resonate with. long post ahead.
Vacation - Bomb the Music Industry (2011)
If you asked me what my favorite band is i will either say bomb the music industry or jeff rosenstock, but considering those are pretty much the same things it doesnt matter lol. While Vacation isnt a perfect record, it is one I love. It lacks some of the ska elements that I love about earlier BTMI records, but at the same time, it is the first record where Jeff’s “””solo””” career sound starts to form in tracks like Sick, Later, Hurricane Waves, Everybody That You Love, Everybody That Loves You, and Vocal Coach. And these tracks are all fantastic, especially the absolutely explosive opener Campaign For a Better Weekend. Where this album suffers in my mind is the fact that it exists as a weird hybrid middle ground between BTMI and modern Jeff Rosenstock, it isn’t really ska like old BTMI and it’s not quite to the same standard as the tracks on We Cool?. And some of the songs are just, not as good as the others, like Why, Oh Why, Oh Why (Oh Oh Oh Oh), which is washed out almost entirely in reverb, and tracks like Savers feeling barren and missing additional instrumentation. But fuck man I can not dislike this record or just call it “ok” because despite this I still listen to this record a lot, it’s so catchy and fun and Im a bit too chronically addicted to btmi.
Reflektor - Arcade Fire (2013)
i dont really get the hate/mixed feelings others have with this record. there’s so many good tracks dude!!!! sure theres a bit of a slump in the middle and it doesnt reach the same emotional heights as their previous records you gotta be ignorant to overlook this records strengths. while i do like The Suburbs more than Reflektor, man i just vibe HARD with some of these tracks; the title track, We Exist, Here Comes The Night Time, Normal Person, Awful Sound (Oh Eurydice), Porno, and ESPECIALLY Afterlife. Plus the cover art is cool and I like it. However Flashbulb Eyes is one of the worst tracks Arcade Fire has ever put out and I hate it immensely. And while far less offensive, tracks like You Already Know, It’s Never Over (Hey Orpheus), and Joan of Arc are just kinda boring and/or uninteresting. Now granted, I'm extremely biased when it comes to Arcade fire in general unless were talking about the trainwreck that is Everything Now. I started listening to Arcade Fire just before Reflektor came out, and I have a kinda sentimental attachment to the record. ill explain the feeling more when i talk about The Suburbs. anticipation oooooo.
good kid m.A.A.d city - Kendrick Lamar (2012)
i might get crucified by some for not putting this in my top 10, but whatever come at me i guess. gkmc is a fantastic record, but i do think the ending is weak, which is why it’s here instead of in the top 10. i mean, let’s be real, Real is a mediocre track, and while Dying of Thirst is an important track to the whole narrative of the record, it feels way too long. almost everything else about this record is fantastic, from the beats, to kendrick’s nasally flows, to the overall structure of the record spinning a tale of a young man battling demons both inside and out, and his eventual redemption. even if i find this record at times to drop pace, it really is flawless otherwise. it felt like a disservice to put this in the 20-10s, bc it’s a good record, but i had to make some compromises and this was one of them.
RTJ2 - Run The Jewels (2014)
el-p and killer mike are a perfect duo, and the tracks they make together are always total bangers. and for me, RTJ2 is the best overall, with RTJ3 in a close second. it’s hard to put this on the lower half of the list, some of the tracks just don’t work as well as the others, but despite that there’s not really any tracks i hate or dislike on this record, minus maybe crown. the pure aggression in the opening track Jeopardy sets the tone for an aggressive yet highly focused record. This is some of the best rap out there right now if you want some music to fuck shit up to.
Pure Comedy - Father John Misty (2017)
This record is both hilarious and extremely bleak. Josh Tillman is a master of satire and sarcasm, and Pure Comedy is the peak of his songwriting skills. The title track is one of the best tracks of the decade, period. And he keeps up the momentum on the following few tracks. The main problem with this record is its weaker second half, but even then it’s criminal to suggest that those songs aren’t good regardless. And despite the bleakness, the one line that sticks in my head after all this time is the line this album fades out to: There’s nothing to fear.
Knife Man - AJJ (2011)
Continuing on the trend of folky, satirical, and bleak records, Knife Man is AJJ’s defining record (next to their debut LP). AJJ blends loud, punky anthems with quieter, folk tracks that touch on sensitive issues in a way only AJJ manages to get away with. And there’s some genuine heart mixed in as well, with the final track Big Bird always striking a chord with me. However, I do feel the record is, let’s just say, padded at times in my opinion. Still, I can’t deny how much i enjoy tracks like Gift of the Magi 2, Hate Rain on Me, The Distance, and Skate Park. Speaking of which when I saw AJJ live recently they played none of those songs and that kinda sucked but hey it was like $20 I can’t complain. And speaking of not getting what I wanted...
You Won’t Get What You Want - Daughters (2018)
It was hard choosing between this record and their 2010 self titled record, but in terms of the overall narrative and variety this record shines through. If there was a number 11 spot in this unorganized list this would probably take that spot. It’s noisey, it’s abrasive, and it’s like nothing you’ve heard before unless you’ve listened to Daughter’s previous records. Tracks like The Reason They Hate Me are catchy in the weirdest and most unwelcoming of ways, Less Sex sounds like a long lost Trent Reznor NIN track, and Guest House is a masochistic and gut wrenching finisher. Fantastic record aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
We Cool? - Jeff Rosenstock (2015)
It’s obvious that I had to include this record somewhere on these list. It’s like a more refined version of the sounds that Jeff experimented with on Vacation. Definitely more punk than ska, but still some of those roots still shine through, especially in the track Nausea. Some of Jeff’s best songs are on this record, from the loud opening tracks Get Old Forever and You, In Weird Cities, to tracks dripping with bittersweet and moody lyrics like I’m Serious, I’m Sorry and Polar Bear or Africa. The main reason this record is on the back end of the top 20 is because the deeper cuts on the record do not match the energy and heights of the best tracks. Tracks like All Blissed Out, The Lows, Darkness Records and Beers Again Alone don’t feel like they belong and stick out a bit. They remind me more of the material Jeff put out on his 2012 EP I Look Like Shit. Mind you they aren’t bad tracks, but I’ll be honest I skip them often when listening to the record because i just wanna get back to the good good stuff.
Sports - Modern Baseball (2012)
Sports is one of the best pop punk records ever, if you can even consider it as such. It’s like a blend of emo and folk punk, and it works so well. A good majority of this record is on my main shuffle playlist. Is it pushing boundaries? Not really, but tracks like Re-Do, Tears Over Beers, and See Ya, Sucker are undeniably catchy and memorable. I NEED MODERN BASEBALL BACK TOGETHER RN. There’s not really anything that wrong with the record, besides maybe lacking in variety, but at 30 minutes, it’s a record that feels nostalgic even on a first listen, and continues to feel that way even after numerous re-listens. Speaking of nostalgia...
The Suburbs - Arcade Fire (2010)
Some background, when I was 13 (circa 2013), I only really listened to whatever my parents put on for me. From my mom, I “inherited” a taste for classic pop and 80s new wave. From my dad, I got metal and hard rock. The first time I made the conscious decision to listen to a record fully, based on my own curiousity, was when I sat and listened to Sgt. Pepper in the summer of 2013, which broadened the scope of what I thought music could even be. And later that year, the first band I got into after The Beatles? Arcade Fire. When I think of my early teens, the memories are set to this record. I remember listening to Ready to Start in my brother’s old hot ass car while driving to the local fair with some friends on a chill fall night, eating tons of junk and staying up past midnight back when doing that was edgy and cool and not a symptom of my depression.
If I was judging this record solely by its best tracks, it would easily be in the top 3. But I couldn’t place it in my top 10 because, frankly, some of the deeper cuts are lacking. I can’t say I like Deep Blue. I really don’t like Rococo. And Half Light I kills the pace of the record. But man, that title track, Ready to Start, Modern Man, Empty Room, Half Light II, Sprawl II... these songs defined my early teen years. I still tear up listening to the title track. Sure I have to skip a few songs when I re-listen, but I can’t place it any lower or my heart will break. It existing outside of the top 10 already hurts. And that’s all that’s left now. The top 10.
But first, some random honorable mentions that didn’t make this list:
Sound & Color - Alabama Shakes
Black Star - David Bowie
Saturation II - BROCKHAMPTON
Melophobia - Cage the Elephant
Teens of Style - Car Seat Headrest
How to Leave Town - Car Seat Headrest
Daughters - Daughters
Sunbather - Deafheaven
Bottomless Pit - Death Grips
Year of the Snitch - Death Grips (should be on this list tbh)
Doris - Earl Sweatshirt

The Ledge #430: New Releases (Pt. 1)
I didn't expect this month's new release show to be a two part extravaganza. But as I was throwing songs into the play folder for this week's show I suddenly realized I had way too many tracks for one show. So once again, next week I'll be playing another two hours of brand new music.
Of course, it really helped strengthen the folder with the surprise releases from a couple of old favorites. First we saw Bob Mould preview his upcoming 14th solo album with the release of the blistering "American Crisis", and just 24 hours later Elvis Costello suddenly dropped a new song called "No Flag". And if that's not enough for surprise drops, Ledge favorite Pavid Vermin suddenly had a new record of covers from Lookout Records releases!
After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. You can find this show at almost any podcast site, including iTunes and Stitcher...or

Top 10 Albums of 2019
Good morning everyone! I can’t believe it’s a whole new fuckin’ decade. 2019 was a great year for music, while a lot of my old favorites put out some lackluster releases (*cough cough* Sleater-Kinney, Weezer), newer and younger bands that I also love really stepped up to the plate and put out what ended up being my favorite records this year, we’ll get to that soon though. First let’s start with some
Honorable Mentions: Avey Tare - Cows on Hourglass Pond Angel Olsen - All Mirrors Jeff Rosenstock - Thanks, Sorry! Big Thief - U.F.O.F. Better Oblivion Community Center - Better Oblivion Community Center Chris Farren - Born Hot
10. Big Thief - Two Hands
Big Thief have consistently blown me away this decade in making really vibrant, urgent, and important music. Their sophomore effort, Capacity, is probably one of my favorite albums of the past ten years. The unique way that the guitars, bass, drums and vocals all blend with each other make the folk rock they develop seem so spellbinding. After the ethereal UFOF from May of this year, Big Thief came crashing back down to earth with Two Hands, and I love the way the band makes themselves feel so close and intimate, playing together in a mostly live setting (while UFOF involved a lot of effects and overdubs). There’s a range of musical emotions at play here from pounding out one of their longest and most aggressive songs “Not”, which might be my favorite song of the year, to quickly follow up that track with a quiet, haunting ballad “Wolf”. What an effective back-to-back. Big Thief proved this year that they’re a damn important band, and I’m glad I’m listening.
9. Black Midi - Schlagenheim
At first, I wasn’t exactly sure what black midi was, or what they were doing. I saw lots of people on Twitter either hyping them up, or making fun of the hype by making absurd jokes about them. It seems however, the band is in on the joke, wearing huge cowboy hats on stage, meshing two or three different graphic design styles together for their promo materials, and then when I saw them in November, the singer kept quoting a line or two from “Stronger” by Kanye West, eventually throwing it into their closer “bmbmbm”. I finally tapped into their sound by checking out their live video for their song “Ducter” and Pitchfork Festival, and was instantly captivated by how different yet familiar their sound was. It was clear that as musicians, they were super tight and together, while at the same time going on crazy tangents. Each time I revisited this album I found something refreshing and new that I think a lot of other post-punk/whatever bands are too afraid to do. I’m excited to see how these guys grow and evolve since they’re so young, but I’m glad I got to be in on the ground floor.
8. Stella Donnelly - Beware of the Dogs
I’m not sure what exactly led me to check this album out, but after I listened to it I realized my friend Anne had put two songs from it in a playlist she made me earlier in the year (thanks Anne if you read this). Right when the first song came on, I was instantly entranced by Stella’s sweet, upbeat voice combined with a twee-adjacent instrumentals and lyrics about womanhood, feminism and shitty men that undercut everything else. This record is really vital, and is catchy and sugary-sweet enough that it kept me coming back for more, each time appreciating Stella’s message more and more.
7. Strange Ranger - Remembering the Rockets
Strange Ranger had been, for me at least, a band that I was the only one not getting. I checked out their first two records earlier this year, they’re sprawling, epic and dreamy, but nothing about them really made me want to revisit them. Then I decided to check out this record, and it seems that they distilled everything they had been going for and made it more accessible. This record at times feels like it’s taken directly from a hazy alt-rock band’s studio from 1998. Somewhere between Smashing Pumpkins, blur and The Rentals. It’s sweet and dreamy while also getting a little noisy and weird at times. I’m glad something finally clicked for me with this band, now I gotta go get the rest to click.
6. Deerhunter - Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?
Full disclosure, Deerhunter have become one of the most important bands in my life this past year, which is probably why this record is here (not a lot of people liked it and I can understand why), but this album definitely was a grower. After delving into their past few releases from this decade (Monomania, Fading Frontier) this album seemed like the next logical step. It’s clear cut and probably the least dreamy Deerhunter have ever sounded, but it’s not without reason. Bradford’s musings on the highlight “What Happens to People?” is a lament about modern life, and trying to search for a point, and the production brings everything clear and upfront so the band and the listener can ponder these things together. Definitely rewarded multiple listens.
5. Laura Stevenson - The Big Freeze
Laura has easily become one of my favorite solo artists over the past year or so. At first, in the context of being pals with one of my all-time favorite punk artists, Jeff Rosenstock, it was hard for me to wrap my head around someone’s music who was so soft, sensitive and reserved as Laura’s was. However when I booked her to play at a small cafe across the street from my school last December (shout out to the Parlor), it was incredible to see her in her own element. Here, she played at least 4 or 5 songs that are on The Big Freeze, which stands as a monument to Laura’s songwriting, she recorded this album in her childhood home, which only adds to the intimacy that she’s creating here. Listen to Laura Stevenson.
4. Mannequin Pussy - Patience
Mannequin Pussy have become one of my favorite bands over the past couple years. Their 2016 record Romantic was one I came to late but found hard to put down once I started listening, often listening to it twice in a row. Here, Patience builds on everything that made Romantic great and brings it to the next level. Drunk II stands as a testament to a new era of epic breakup songs (see also, Night Shift by Lucy Dacus). The personal highlight for me was “Fear/+/Desire”, and of course seeing them live in their hometown of Philly was incredible. Such an important band!!
3. Tyler, the Creator - IGOR
I’m pretty sure that Tyler’s 2017 Scum Fuck Flower Boy was a tribute to a relationship, and IGOR is the breakup. With Pinkerton being my favorite album ever, I have an affinity for breakup albums. IGOR flows so well and the message and idea is super cohesive, so of course I listened to it all the way through a bunch. I really liked the production and beats he used here too, they were grimy and lo-fi which made the whole effort feel that much more raw. Tyler has really grown into his own into a mature artist who uses the album form to tell a really compelling story, I really loved this record.
2. DUMP HIM - Dykes to Watch Out For
Watching DUMP HIM grow into the vital and fierce punk band we all deserve has been a pleasure to watch, and it all comes together so clearly on DTWOF. The production brings all the ripping guitar solos, excellent drum fills and amazing bass work to the front, as well as Jac and Mattie’s laments on trauma, community and being queer in today’s world. This is a really great and important record, go listen to it!
1. Prince Daddy & The Hyena - Cosmic Thrill Seekers
Prince Daddy have become one of my favorite bands to follow in the past 4 or so years. Their first two records were addicting, but this record feels transcendent, most certainly worth the almost 3 year wait. This record feels like what Weezer’s abandoned Songs From the Black Hole would’ve ended up like, but even better and touching upon vital themes of mental illness, love and friendship. This album is nothing short of epic, and I love it so much. Here’s to a better 2020!
