Musings on Custodes: Automatons vs Poets

So the first thing to talk about is the tension at the core of how Custodes are currently written: conformity vs individuality, loyalty vs independence.

I'd say that, in storytelling sense, Custodes as a faction are supposed to have three defining characteristics:

One - "superhumanity". A big deal is made throughout all the sources on Custodes lore of how in their skillset they are not just warriors, but also administrators, diplomats, philosophers and so on. Much like one of the proto-iterations of Superman, their fighting ability is not so much a result of mega-uber training and weaponry, but rather a prominent aspect of their overall advanced evolutionary state. "Being superhuman allows you to punch good, but also elevates all other aspects of your being" kind of deal. Everything about them is supposedly heightened - bodies, minds and souls.

But by itself this is nothing unique for a setting somewhat preoccupied with various forms of trans- and post-humanism. A sentence "They have advanced so far beyond humanity that could they even be called humans anymore?" applies to, like, a half a dozen factions throughout the setting. To make them distinct from the rest, Custodes' lore focuses heavily on individual achievement, going to great lengths to hype up the faction as a whole through the descriptions of how cool and accomplished individual custodians are, and it plays up their non-combat skills and abilities as something integral to their identity.

This does succeed in helping them carve out their own unique corner in 40k universe, I believe. It shapes them into not an army, but a lodge of mythic heroes and unique champions, who would each be a protagonist of their own story in a universe of a less epic scale - the Argonauts, the Knights of the Round Table, the Avengers. Such a focus on individuality naturally invites us to imagine them as not just supersoldiers and bodyguards, but indeed as these hyper-personalities, risen and evolved beings, who share all the core human qualities with us, but have them heightened to an incredible degree. Not just warriors, but poets also.

Two - loyalty. An even bigger deal is made of how unflinchingly loyal and wholly devoted to the Emperor custodians are. And, well, no shit - this literally is their purpose as a faction, the very first association that comes to mind once you hear the basic pitch of "emperor's personal guard". And the lore commits fully to this, going on and on about how tireless and focused custodians are in pursuit of their once-failed duty. They are the very epitome of the royal guard, loyal and devoted to such an extent as to become practically an extension of a monarch's own body, an integral symbol of their power over their subjects - the Immortals, the Varangian Guard, the Janissaries.

And Three is the obvious contradiction between the first two: a unique and complex individual, whose entire personality and purpose are built around someone else, a hero with no ambition but service, a philosopher forever beholden to a passed-down ideology. The tension between superhuman individuality and dehumanizing aspects of servitude lies at the very core of the idea of Custodian Guard.

(On a sidenote - the origin of this contradiction seems very interesting to me, because, while all the information that sets it up is present in the modern codexes, it feels to me like it owes a lot of its existence to pre-codex and pre-HH novels versions of the faction. I may recall something incorrectly, but as far as I remember, ever since the black-helmet-and-tits-out rogue trader version the main thing that was known about them was that custodians are so devoted to the Emperor, that they act essentially like automatons in their single minded devotion to him. For example - standing guard completely motionless for literal hundreds of years - clearly the basis for the vigil of Companions of the modern version. I wonder in what part the conception of their current dichotomy came from writers' desire to not retcon the old lore entirely? After all, retcons in 40k do usually aim for a degree of softness, trying to keep the "old" lore as true at least "from a certain point of view")

This brings us to the fun part - how is this contradiction resolved? How does being this particular brand of "more and less than human" actually work? Well, I'd say that in current lore it is mostly just sidestepped, leaving the one true arbiter of 40k lore - you, reading this - to figure it out for yourself.

There is, of course, the satiric version, one that would be most in line with the roots of 40k - that the "poet" aspect of the custodians is just propaganda, tales woven up by impressionable pilgrims and what not. That custodians are essentially just (even more) roided' up space marines, soldiers and bodyguards first and foremost, their higher aspirations beginning and ending with regurgitation of things that the Emperor had once said.

There is the version, perhaps, most true to real life - one that points out that there is no real contradiction between being intellectually hyper-developed and being a loyal and unquestioning servant of a tyrant. Its tempting to believe that things we so appreciate about human nature - wisdom, creativity, capacity for critical thinking - are tools that will always lead those who bear them to some sort of state of universal goodness, but this just isn't so. One can be an example of both the best and the worst that humanity can offer. Human nature contains multitudes, and not all of it is good. When dialed up to 11... well, that's one of the central themes of the whole setting, isn't it?

But, personally, I am a sentimental person, all too easily drawn in by the high drama that 40k offers, and so I tend to latch on explanations of its kind. I really like the idea of custodians being neither unquestioning, nor blindly loyal to the Emperor - and yet still ending up eternally devoted to him. While the nature and the extent of custodes' connection to the Emperor remains murky in the lore, the idea that it is something akin to that of primarchs and their legions is not an uncommon one. And it means that in some way they inherit his personality, that, whether they want it or not they become like him. And thus their loyalty comes not from a place of devotion to a person, but from a place of agreement with his ideals. They are fully capable of what we would call independent thought, fully capable of questioning the Emperor and his designs... It's just that in a bout of tragic determinism they will always arrive to the same conclusions that he once did, make the same decisions if given a chance. Custodians are, in fact, individuals and larger-than-life heroic personalities... It's just that they are mostly the same one.

Anyway, I mostly want to talk about various specific worldbuilding details of AC lore and the storytelling potential that they have, but this somewhat more abstract dichotomy is too central for pretty much all their stuff to be left unacknowledged.

A (not so) little reminder about life

Life Goals: When you get there, you’re just starting...

I often see posts here from younger folk talking about how they feel unable to do what they want to do. I see the depression and the struggles and the pain. From an old fart of a lady on the internet.. here’s my story about how the fuck I climbed out of the pit of misery and self destruction I was on and am finally, at almost 37, just starting the life I wanted to live.

I have always wanted to go to Japan and teach there for a while. There’s lots of reasons why I’m fascinated with the country and culture, but that’s not what this is about. My adoration is not limited to just pop culture, but to the language itself. The characters and complexity and the beauty of it (I think this of all languages, I just prefer Japanese). 

However, as a woman with very humble beginnings in a slightly dystopian rural scape in America.. I never really thought much about it becoming a reality. Through my blunder years, I stood out like a sore thumb as well. My family was a “broken” one, my parents divorced when I was 10 and.. let’s just say I grew up really fast. I think that gives enough background. I was an ‘01 graduate. So, like any up and coming gen Y: I went into English and Art and Sociology and Graphic Design at different parts of my education and nothing practical. Japanese wasn’t offered where I went to school but I did study French for 4 years.

A failed engagement, 2 cross country moves, being broke AF and a few years later in 2011, I got involved in an ESL/EFL/Linguistic Master’s program. I was already in my late 20′s but I figured that there’d be jobs available for me in the field. When I was working on my graduate thesis, companies rejected me based on my weight, my lack of experience, my rural accent and a few other things. I also had my liver rupture and a nice 2 week hospital stay where my house was broken into and my graduate thesis was on the laptop that was stolen.

I wrote that fucker over again from a few images and notes on social media and pure willpower.. and a lot of my “special blend” coffee that has enough caffeine to fly me to the moon, in about a month. By the power of greyskull I scraped through with honor’s and a diploma. My thesis defense was shakey AF.

Finally had a job lined up in Korea.. which I knew nothing about. Didn’t even know how to say the words or read it. Knew very little history as well or culture. That was a trip best left summed up as: The people were awesome outside of the job, the job was full of racist assholes. The kids? Eh they were typical students who didn’t GAF.

Oh, and I got a major tear in my left ACL and couldn’t work for a few months. SO that was fun.

By the time this had all transpired, I was 33. Queue another few failed relationships with physical/emotional abuse, sexual harassment, rape and other fun things like that. 

I moved back in with my mom from 2014 to 2018. I was on disability. I had to take physical therapy to regain motion of my leg b/c of no treatment in Korea. Ect. Queue the depression fugue and struggle with suicidal desires which turned into plans and research and almost implementation. I pushed friends away and basically became unable to function normally. When I did find people I could form friendships with, they ended up being unhealthy. My sense of boundaries was weird, and like many people who are drowning in these dark places, when I tried to talk about it: it sounded like I was a self-centric prick instead of the cry for help it really was. My communication skills became limited to type, and often lead to misunderstandings or miscommunication due to forming fast and intense friendships with people online instead of taking time to slowly open up. Basically, even when I was trying to convey something harmless my lack of awareness could make it sound pretty cutting or downright racist/bigoted/ect. 

I’m not trying to deny their feelings. I just want to take ownership of my side of things as a note: that was never the real meaning, but I will always be one to apologize for my lack of clarity in speaking. I fucking studied linguistics and communication--I feel that I should be able to avoid most of that shit.... but it’s still going to happen. I still felt horrible over it all and have guilt to this day, even though I don’t even remember ever saying anything like that. 

But you know? I have also learned that some people are only meant to be in your life for a while, and that’s OK. You don’t have to jive with everyone all the time. Still, I wasn’t myself. I’m still not entirely back to “me.” I’d lost my sense of identity. I’d lost my center and balance.. I’d lost so much. My head gets tight and dizzy when I think about identity too much to this day. I’m working on it though. 

Oddly enough, what saved me were 3 things at 3 different times:

My first partner, a now trans man, who brought me out to house sit while he and his wife were going on a 2nd honeymoon. We’re really tight. I was there  before he knew he was transgender and helped give support through his coming out. He knows me at my purest and his wife is the most lovely and gracious woman on the planet. They’re my center for what is healthy and good in life. I love them both more than words. 

He also asked me to read his biography, which while slightly muddled, was very flattering to the parts that had me, and drug me through the dark places he also traveled and into the light where he is now. It gave me hope. It breathed some fresh air into the cave I’d been hiding in. 

We were all very close and we shared some good memories and for the first time.. I remembered that I was not this ball of pain that I was at home. My family is wonderful and amazing. I just don’t flourish in the environment that they do well in. My needs, especially due to my health problems (more on that in a minute), are very specific and limiting. 

It was really weird. I felt pain all the time, at such great intensity, due to my health problems. While I was there at another point (a year later doing the same house sitting gig), an older friend of mine who also had fibromyalgia, let me try her medicinal weed. 

I cried really, *really* hard. I’d forgotten what it was like to not feel pain all the time and stayed high as a kite for about 2 weeks straight and got some time to think clearly and actually write also. It was during this time that I was contacted about a job in... Korea again. I decided to say fuck it and go do the interview with the owner of the private cram school.  A friend of mine also went into a downward spiral at this time and I was their suicide watch. I’m happy to say, he is still alive and is doing well and according to him: is living a fairly content and productive life now. 

I am NOT going to go into details about my job as I am still working there but I will say this: it’s better than the last one and has given me some perspective. I also was the head teacher, so it looked really good on my resume...and I will NEVER teach kindergarten again. 

On the off chance, I took a 3 day trip to Japan. It was something I wanted to do all my life and I was at a low point again. It... was amazing to do something that literally was on my bucket list. I loved everything about Tokyo. I loved the crowded streets and the lack of staring and how quiet it was and.. just I was the happiest I’ve been in many years. I was actually outgoing. I could go on and on... but I found my happy place (specifically the Nezu Shrine in Tokyo). Even now, when I think about it.. I feel the same calm and peace I felt the first time I stepped onto the shrine ground. 

I started studying Japanese again and started applying for some jobs and.. while it’s not the most fantastic job.. I got one teaching university classes. I’m not a full professor but I’m planning on trying to become one if I like it there. It’s an elective class, so the students actually want to study English, unlike the kids at the cram schools and public schools I’ve worked for. 

I’m just now starting on the journey that I wanted to do for most of my life. I’ve dreamed about going to Japan since I saw it on some kid’s show. I later became fascinated through shows like Sailor Moon, Boogiepop Phantom, Serial Experiments Lain, and .hack//sign. The last one there has a lot to do with why I want to go into translation and work in gaming... which is a far cry from working at a univ.  But you know what? I DON’T CARE IF IT TAKES TIL I’M 70! I’m going to be a localizor/translator/world developer for a game. 

And it’s going to be fuckin awesome.

Norden Brings Its Brand of California Cool to an Encinitas Storefront

Southern California-based home goods brand Norden was founded in 2014 by husband and wife team Erika and Pete Paniera. Both noticed a hole in the market for simple, well-designed home accessories that would stand the test of time, so they set out to fill it with Erika’s interest in home decor and Pete’s experience as an art director and designer coming in handy. Each piece the duo creates and produces is informed by their own taste as well as the brand’s mission to bring warmth and comfort to the home through carefully considered, functional objects produced with a high level of attention to craft. Much of Norden’s line is produced in their California studio or in the USA by manufacturers with years of knowledge and experience. As the brand has grown, the next step organically presented itself in the form of a storefront in Encinitas. For this month’s Design Store(y), we talked to founder and owner Pete Paniera about how the shop came about and what Norden does as a brand.

Why did you pick this city/neighborhood/storefront?

My wife, Erika, and I run Norden together and we have lived in Encinitas off and on for the past 10 years. We definitely feel that we are part of the community here and love the small town feel that Encinitas has. Whether we are hosting an art show, a concert, or a warehouse sale, the community has always come out to support Norden. It just felt natural for us to open up a retail space here in Encinitas. Plus, the way our physical retail location became available to us was very organic. Over the years, many of our friends have either worked at or ran the space at UNIV (alongside our shop). When Sam Larson, from the menswear store Lone Flag, offered us the space adjacent to UNIV and Lone Flag, we knew it would be a great fit for Norden.

Where did you get the name for the store?

Norden is the name of our brand, so we just went with that.

Has it changed much since it opened? How?

We opened in October of last year, so we definitely focused on getting the shop ready for gifting season. Our first buy for the shop included a lot of small items like chocolate, watches, and gifts. Now, as we move into spring/summer, we are focusing more on our plant program. It’s been really fun to curate plants for the store and take care of them — and help our customers to learn how to take care of their plants as well. Plants are the perfect accessory to add warmth and life to the home. A plant that someone buys in our store can potentially live for years in someone’s home, which is really exciting to us. As we move into other seasons, I’m sure the store will change and evolve accordingly.

What’s one of the challenges you have with the business?

Norden has been in business as a brand for almost five years now. We have mostly focused on wholesale and selling our products through our amazing retail partners. Now, with our brick and mortar space, we are seeing firsthand some of the challenges our retail partners face. It has been beneficial to us as a business and gives us a new perspective on retail that we can use to serve our wholesale customers better.

What other stores have you worked in before opening this one?

I have never worked in retail, but as a brand Norden sells to a variety of stores throughout the U.S., Europe, and Australia. Most notable among those are Design Within Reach, Herman Miller, Need Supply, West Elm, and CB2. We also work with a lot of really great smaller boutiques and museum stores. Some of the first shops to carry Norden were Home of the Brave, Spartan, Individual Medley, and Lawson Fenning. We still have great relationships with many of our first stockists that started with us five years ago.

What’s your favorite item in the store right now?

I love the lighting that SIN is making right now. She is exploring and pushing the boundaries of what can be done with ceramics and lighting in a really interesting way. We have one Rolling Hills table lamp in store at the moment — and I can’t wait until someone buys it and takes it home (so that I won’t).

What is this season’s theme/inspiration/story?

This season we are focusing on bringing green into the home, so we are really stocked up on plants right now. We recently released a plant guide to help people navigate plant care and the mysteries of keeping their plants alive. We know owning plants can be really intimidating but we want to encourage people to bring greenery into their home. They are beautiful, clean the air, and they bring a calming presence to your environment.

Are you carrying any new products and/or undiscovered gems you’re particularly excited about?

We are about to bring in a delivery of pieces from Mt. Washington Pottery that we are really excited about. Beth Katz is the ceramicist behind the brand and we think she makes the most beautiful work. Part of what’s exciting about running the retail space is the opportunity to curate brands for the shop that nobody else in San Diego sells. When you come to Norden you are going to find items that are not available elsewhere in the city — or perhaps anywhere else. Many of the pottery brands we sell only stock a few stores and sell out of items on their websites. At any given point it’s possible that we have items in stock that aren’t available anywhere else.

What’s been a consistent best seller?

As the shop is a flagship for our brand, Norden items tend to sell the best — specifically our candles. The shop is across the street from one of the most famous surf spots in Southern California, so our Hanalei candle tends to sell really well. The fragrance leans heavily towards the summer scents of sunscreen and surf wax.

What’s your process for selecting + curating the objects in your shop?

Running the brand has allowed us to meet so many ceramicists, brands, and creators that make beautiful and interesting work. The third party products we bring in to the shop are mostly from friends of ours. Having the Norden storefront gives us a chance to work with brands we love and show their products to our customers.

Any special events/exhibits/pop ups/collaborations coming up?

We love hosting events in our community and always feel supported by those that have been following the brand for years. When we opened the shop in October, we had our friends The Mattson 2 play. That was super exciting as we have been friends with them for a long time and they are such loved artists in our community. It was really special having them play at our opening and so many people came out for it. In terms of collaborations, we are working on some exciting new things with SIN and Mt. Washington Pottery, plus we have something in the works with artist Laura Berger.

Do you have anything from the store in your own home?

Almost everything we sell in the shop is in our home. Everything we make as a brand, and everything we curate for the shop are things that Erika and I personally love. We aren’t selling anything that we wouldn’t put in our home. We are interested in creating and selling products that customers will want to buy, but also we are trying to sell items that show our point of view on home decor.

What’s been one of the most fulfilling aspects in opening your store?

Erika gets really excited about helping curate the brands and items we stock in the store. I love taking care of the plants. Since the brand takes so much time, we have delegated some tasks to our employees but I check in on the shop multiple times a week. It’s awesome when I’m there and a customer comes in. Having a direct connection with our customers and getting them excited about products is really fulfilling.

What’s one lesson you’ve learned since opening your store?

When we opened we didn’t have a gauge for how much money people were willing to spend on certain items. Handmade and hand painted ceramics tend to be pricey. Finding that price threshold and adjusting our purchasing for the store has been a learning process. Also, trying to educate the customer on why something costs what it does is key.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone who wants to follow a similar path to yours, what would it be?

We are a brand that happens to have a retail store — in that order. I think that has been a good way to approach retail. Since we produce many of the products that our store stocks, we are able to achieve a much higher average margin on the items we sell. I would say that is a big advantage over the traditional model of retail. Making our own products also allows us to be flexible with our inventory. That being said, my advice for someone trying to start up a shop in today’s tough retail environment is to think of how you can sell items in your shop that will allow you to achieve a higher margin so you can pay your bills. Also, when you curate the items for your store, try to have an authentic point of view that resonates with your customers. There are plenty of stores out there selling the same thing, it’s your job to make your shop unique and stand out from the crowd.
