Because listen, okay, I was pondering on what it would take to make an EAH/OUAT crossover, you know? Like, where to wedge in all those extra kids. And most of them are pretty easy, or at least the main ones don't require too much of an effort - Maddie Hatter? Jefferson can easily have two daughters instead of one. Raven Queen? Remove the infertility spell Cora inflicted (which was a pretty stupid idea to begin with) and she can have a kiddo with her true love - the name even fits well with Robin, Roland and Regina, at least initial-wise. Apple White? Baby Neal doesn't do anything useful anyway, might as well make him into a little girl, so the jealousy factor for Emma can go STONKS. Etc etc

But you know who DOESN'T fit well in this grand scheme of things? That's right! Our very best girl Cedar Wood 😒😒😒😒😒😒

Because no way in hell August is making himself ANOTHER wooden kid, okay? He's been there, he's done that. Never again. So what crossed my mind instead was that blasted idea we were throwing around last year in the comments under one of my canon compliant August fics, that he got one of his flings pregnant and subsequently got the child basically dropped onto his doorstep.

All this to say - what if this small girl he had with, I don't know, an Afro-American woman vacationing in Phuket, ends up without carers so he gets designated as next of kin? And then once she gets to Storybrooke, where magic actually works, it turns out that daddy's genes are stronger than they'd all expected?

in the introduction, gerhard zimmermann says that apparently these were nearly destroyed - when the allied troops were bombing places, they tried to rescue them, and originally meant to bring them to a place in an old salt mine in schönebeck, but they couldn't reach that place anymore. so along with other important documents they brought them back to berlin and kept them in the secret state archive, of which everything burned down, except the magazine wing these were kept in. he says the fire raged for three days. wack.

there's a note on the letter the king received when the court first didn't give katte the death sentence that's so bizarre linguistically idk how to translate it. i've never seen the word 'flederwisch' in my life. but he's very clear he'd like them to rethink this judgement. also he's calling the court 'krichgericht.' the way i would write that word is kriegsgericht (=martial court). pre-orthographic standardization german is good actually

aw the last letter from that whole trial debacle friedrich wrote to his dad he said 'i'd like nothing more than to erase the miserable past year from my life' (he's polite and claims it's bc he upset his father, but his dad was an abusive ass, whose answer was 'and you'd better not forget it. should you mean it for once then i hope you'll do better next time and be a good son and good christian and then ill be merciful with you again' (paraphrasing. i do Not like this guy.)

ok so this is a bunch of supportive letters to the king from.. other royals? the kaiser of austria's, karl, basically says 'I am certain that there were very tragic and significant circumstances that caused my dear honoured man to proceed with such harshness against your crown prince, but i can only entreat you, since it's a matter so close to your heart and because of the strength of our deep and enduring friendship, to please go a little easier. only because i find this whole thing a little sad!!! but surely, the crown prince will be less likely run away again if you prove that you're not that cruel..."

friedrich (crown prince) your writing is so much better and you sound so much less like a horrible person. you do not sound happy though. sorry about all of this. he says he'll spend the rest of his life making up for his mistakes to his father and his country :/ (this is in a letter to thank the kaiser of austria for speaking up for him. later, as king, friedrich fought against the then-kaiser of austria, or i guess maria-theresa. uhm. a lot. militarily. so that's fun.)

Summary: Steve Rogers is determined to take down all the HYDRA agents still operating. Among them, he knows there is his childhood best friend, Bucky, but he still doesn’t know he isn’t the only person from his past coming back to life.

Intro

Has anyone ever asked himself what made Steve Rogers so bitter towards life, up to the point that, after being brought back from the ice, he never allowed himself to get involved with someone?

During the war he had lost everyone he truly cared about: his best friend, his girl, and someone he didn’t know he would miss that much also seventy years later.

After the battle with Ultron, almost everything came back to normality. Tony Stark went back to take care of the Stark Industries with Pepper, leaving the Avengers Compound to Steve, Natasha and the recruits -which had been already labeled as the ‘New Avengers’.

Although she didn’t want anybody to know it, especially Steve, Natasha had been searching the remaining agents working for HYDRA. She had been able to put down two bases alone and kill those who were trying to escape. Though she came across some documents which Steve would have read.

That’s why that morning she woke up early and, after a one-hour-long work out, she went straight to the Captain’s office with the papers in her hands.

“Good morning, Steve.”

“’Morning, Natasha”, he didn’t bother to raise his eyes from the computer screen, “Do you need my help?”

The red-haired girl sat down in front of him and handed him the papers she was taking with her, “You should have a look”. Natasha stayed there in silence as Steve read all the information about new HYDRA’s targets.

He wasn’t surprised to find a lot of names belonging to ex SHIELD agents. What hurt him was to read Bucky’s name and acknowledge how dangerous he was.

“Why is this name blanked?”

Steve was referring to a hidden name, though a description wasn’t missing: potentially dangerous, enhanced individual, can control elemental elements.

“Do we know anything else about them?” everything else wasn’t important anymore to the Captain. His attention was completely on finding the targets -in particular the ‘enhanced individual’.

1945, August 5th

“Richard, do you copy? Richard!”

You were desperately trying to call your friend through the walkie-talkie you had stolen from the men you were escaping from, but he didn’t answer to you.

You tried another couple of times to call his name, but he never answered. You were starting to get worried and for a moment you thought about going back inside and rescuing him, then you heard a bang coming from the small object next to you and you jumped, scared.

“Richard!” you called again, but nothing came from the other end of the receptacle. You made your mind, and you were about to head back inside, when someone called your name.

“We know where to find you, Agent 749. We’re coming for you.”

You hang up, threw the receiver among the trees in the forest and began to run away from the cave you’d found refuge. You didn’t forget to ‘clean’ the place and redirect their researches towards the opposite direction you were headed.

You had been running for hours, probably days, when you stopped somewhere in the forest, near to a river. Though you were hidden in the woods, you could clearly hear noises characteristic of a city. From the map in your hands, you could state you were near to Hiroshima. The sun was setting, so you decided to stop where the woods were thicker -where hopefully no one would have found you.

You placed your backpack on the grass and started building the tent in which you were supposed to sleep that night. Once you were done, you set your sleeping bag on the ground and sat on it, after having closed the door of the tent.

You looked down at your legs and you noticed you were bleeding. Very much. You picked up your first aid kit and disinfected the wound, then you stitched it. Once you were done, you put everything away and focused on your ‘dinner’: a can of tuna and an apple gathered from a tree. While eating, you kept staring at your backpack -placed next to the entrance of the tent- and at all the pins on it.

When you were a child, you liked collecting pins with your friends. You would find them on the floor, in pubs where, probably, former soldiers had left them, and, your favorite place, in the park. You used to spend the entire day in the park with your best friends, having picnics, playing with the ball, and doing a lot of stupid things.

The States. Your homeland and where you wished you could go back instantly. You missed your family, your house, your friends -and they missed you too-, but going back home would have costed your life, and probably theirs, too.

You remembered clearly the night you escaped from the prison you were caged in, and almost immediately you understood you couldn’t ever go back to Brooklyn, without the people you were running from knowing you were back. You had also tried to send your family some letters to let them know you were alive and, though your situation wasn’t pleasant, you really wanted them to think that you were okay -and not dead-, but probably they never got them, because you’d never got an answer from them.

With that thought in your mind, you closed your eyes and, even though your spot wasn’t comfortable at all, you fell asleep almost immediately, hoping that the next day would take away all your problems.

It was early in the morning when you got woken up by people screaming. What did you get up all of a sudden was that the screams were too close to you and, checking on the map, you stated that you were far away from the city center.

You got up and made your way out of your tent. When you arrived there the night before, that place was green, full of trees, animals and now that you were looking at it, there was nothing.

The trees were burning. The grass was on fire. The animals were suffocating due to the dense smoke coming from the burning woods. You weren’t doing better; as you tried to breathe in, you coughed really bad and the more you tried it, the more your lungs hurt, and your throat burned. After a minute being exposed to those gases you found it hard to breathe and you fell on your knees. You tried to scream for help at the top of your lungs, but no one could help you.

Then, all of a sudden, you heard an explosion, and everything went black.

You passed out.

Years before

“Guys, I’ve taken my decision. The doctor will better me and you’ll see the results.”

“Steve, why do you wanna do this? You’re perfect the way you are. Bucky and I love you like this”, you tried to convince him, but you knew better than anyone else that no one could have changed his mind -because you were just like him, “Just think about it a little more”.

“I’ve already made my mind, Cherry”, the thin, blonde guy hugged you and placed a kiss on your forehead, “Will you come with me?”

You blinked a couple of times before actually answering his question: of course, you would have loved to go with him. Though you thought you would have needed some kind of support from your other best friend, Bucky, but he was in Europe, fighting the Nazis.

“I will fight in Europe. I will kick Hitler’s ass myself”, Steve sat down on a bench and ‘forced’ you to do the same, “Once the war will be over, and the U.S. will have won, I’ll come back together with Bucky and we will be together again”.

The day after you woke up really early in order to be next to your best friend. He repeatedly told you that you would have been reserved a special seat among representatives from all countries.

That morning Ms. Peggy Carter came to pick you up from your homes and, after having explained you what was going to happen to your friend, tried to get you at ease. Once you arrived, you were left alone while Ms. Carter prepared Steve for the procedure together with the doctor and another man, you recognized being Mr. Stark -the brightest mind around the world.

A guard took you upstairs, from where you could have a better view. You were told to sit down between two men and they smiled at you as you entered from the door. When everybody was ready to begin, the German doctor filled Steve with penicillin and then gave him the serum.

Everything happened in less than five minutes; a more solid, tall and muscular version on your childhood friend Steve came out of the pod, then you heard a bang and, afraid of what could happen, you passed out.

On Grief

This is a long one. You're under no obligation to push further if you don't want to. It's a personal post, so I'll more than understand if this isn't to your tastes. The normally-scheduled pedantry, commentary and memes will resume shortly.

One of my relatives was diagnosed with ALS. What started as an odd case of palsy in her left set of vocal cords that could've been far more benign was just confirmed by her referred physician. It's Lou Gherig's, and with her age and current condition, her prognosis is of three to five years, tops. Sure, Stephen Hawking blew his own prognosis out of the water, but a combination of notoriety and luck enabled him to eke out as much existence as medical tech could've possibly allowed.

We knew things were suspect when my aunt, a marathoner with a monthly sub to Runner's World, stopped running. Her food intake dropped like a stone, and she soon took to increasingly simple painting and drawing styles. At first we thought it was just her wanting to explore simpler rendering techniques, but then...

Then we noticed the twitching. How awkwardly her pens and brushes were set in her hands. She was in great shape and didn't mind living in the ass-end of Sutton, basically in the open country and with a path leading up to her front door that was all in rough cobblestones. She broke a hip against them, last year.

Her speech started to slur, lately. Her last bike trip also landed her in the ER. She doesn't bike anymore. She doesn't run, and being a gourmand by nature, feels obligated to restrain herself, for fear of gaining weight. She's aggressively vegan. Not towards others, but towards herself. No meat, no eggs, nothing. Most of us ovo-lactos and omnivores in the family know her constant snacking meant her seventy-plus body is desperate for energy.

From the look of things, it feels like the diagnosis broke through her bullshit reasoning for being vegan. She wasn't vegan for the sake of limiting her carbon footprint or making more responsible choices at the grocery store, but because she, as a lifelong anorexic, thought she was ugly and needed to lose weight. That's been a constant with her. Age catches up and skin sags? She mistakes it for a love handle, cuts out virtually all sources of protein and carbs safe for tofu, seitan and bean-based preps. Of course, like a lot of anorexics, she'd have bulemic episodes. I used to sleep over at her last bachelor pad, as a teen, and I remember her pantry was loaded up for bear with Danish cookie tins, Nutella jars and whipped cream. I remember she invited me over specifically when she intended to cheat. Then it was back to yoga, pot-smoking, meditation and shopping runs - and she probably kept her purging for when I was gone.

So yeah. I'm betting Belgian Asshole (see one of my previous posts) convinced her to break her vows and went looking for a "slice of authentic Tikka Masala", to quote his email. The entire family is made up of ethnic food diehards, so we spam-flooded his inbox with recommendations. Looks like she'll be eating meat again, soon. Her own email mentioned concerns of strength and stamina, so I get it.

Otherwise? We're gobsmacked. Imagine spending an entire weekday both at work and off work, aggressively goofing off because you're trying as hard as you can not to think of your favourite aunt's mention of assisted suicide as an option.

Three to five years. Maybe one, or two good Christmases. After that, her condition should probably have started to deteriorate quickly.

I'm not close with a ton of my own family. I love them all, but it's more a sense of polite respect than anything involving solid bonds. The only two folks I know I'll be devastated for when they'll die are her, and my youngest cousin on the other side of the family.

I'm mostly okay now. No doubts, no crisis of unbelief, no anger, no rage... But then I'll see her in a more diminished state, one of those days. How am I going to take to it?

Part of me keeps a tally of the deaths in the family. First, it was my uncle on my mother's side. Ruptured abdominal artery, with a leak small enough to pool into the gut's cavity for months. Decay settled in, guy got anesthetized for an intervention...

They didn't even bother sewing him back up.

Second one was my other paternal aunt's new husband. First one was great, but left the country in the seventies to go live in Stockholm with his medical assistant. Second one was a geologist and physicist at the same campus she taught as. French guy, the son of innkeepers four generations down. It showed, too. Our Christmas tables haven't been the same since he left us his recipie books, all his corny jokes on provincial eating habits, and his obstinate focus on turning every 25th of December into a Roman orgy probably befitting of the old Saturnalia traditions. I mean, when's the last time you've had an eight-course meal, outside of Thanksgiving?

Tumors in his mesenteric artery lined the blood vessel's inner walls, deposited virtually everywhere in his body. He was diagnosed in June and dead by August. He'd always been the lanky type, bone-thin even if he hoovered food like he'd never have enough. He looked even thinner in his hospital bed.

Then, my maternal grandpa bit it. Decades of casual alcoholism, cirrhosis more or less jumping on him around his seventy-sixth year. He looked a bit like John Keston, the actor who played Gehn in CyanWorlds' Riven. Same hairline, same hawkish nose, same eyes - just more Cajun and less New England-esque. I don't know if it was youth or stupidity or - anything, really, but I dropped by to see him, just two days before he died. I didn't realize he was tallying my life, asking me if I had everything in order, if things were planned.

Now, I understand.

Next one on the chopping block is Aunt Doris, still on Mom's side. She of the serial mooching, she of the concept of not needing much to get by if you were the cute one of the family. She was pretty enough in her prime, sure - if by pretty you meant "cigarette-butt blonde with a discount Farah Fawcett blow-up and an unfinished High School degree". First husband was an abusive ass who gave her an uncommonly sensitive son, second one figured she'd stick to the minimum-wage circuit while he tore out rotator cuffs or busted his C7 while on his outboard like clockwork. By the end, she roped my grandmother into living with her, spent her days sloppy-drunk and died on her ratty couch while falling asleep and choking on her own vomit.

Before them all, the youngest of my uncles died at age two. Cancer. Never knew which one, was told it didn't matter. You didn't survive much of anything cancerous, back in the late fifties.

Ping-pong this back to three years ago, and my oldest paternal uncle dies. Paul, who smoked like a chimney for most of his life and successfully stopped after discovering Champix. He got to live five great years as the high-IQ oddball he'd always been, smoke-free. Paul was the weird bird in the family, the type to remember a really engrossing story at two in the morning and making a note to call you up first thing in the morning to share it. He always had a project of some sort to work on, like a simulated investors' tank for young entrepreneurs looking to learn the ropes, or a Byzantine arrangement of coaxials allowing four of his lakeside neighbours to pirate his cable sub. He'd invite us over for dinner, gather all the ingredients we'd need for whatever it was he wanted to treat us to - and then he'd let us cook it - just sitting by the sidelines, chatting away.

He was also a bit of a narcoleptic, and looked a bit like William Howard Taft if you'd worked him out of these old sack suits and into modern shirts and suspenders. He fell asleep practically everywhere, with his more wakeful environments being his workshop and his property's dock. He took me out fishing, once, and knew what the entire family expected.

"Oars're here, Gremlin, fish're that way. Wake me up when you've got a bite."

At this point, it wasn't even a point of concern; it was just an Uncle Paul Thing, the exact thing you'd have expected out of this kind, eccentric blob of a man whose idea of fishing involved pushing his hat over his eyes and basically all but ensuring that his roaring snores would scare prey away. He'd been a supposedly high-IQ type, terminally bored with almost everything, only really getting agitated and interested back when I asked him for help for my Junior High Computer class's Javascript calculator. Once the syntax hit something familiar and he realized that JS has some similarities with FORTRAN, he was on a roll, acting like someone had snuck a Red Bull in his coffee.

Well, fibrosis caught up with him. His last hours were spent directing us on how to cook what would've been his last meal. I think he really just wanted to know we were alright, that we still could exchange laughs around the kitchen counter. He clocked out the way he always did, except he had an oxygen tube running under his nose. His head bobbed down, he snored loudly for a few minutes, then turned increasingly quiet...

And that was it.

And now there's Isabelle. The marathoner, my partner-in-crime when it comes to professing to have a healthy diet while occasionally cheating in glorious, weekend-defining means, my gateway to cannabis and also the first person who took my cringy self-insert fanfic fodder and went No, that's worth it! Push it, develop that universe of yours!

I wouldn't be almost two-thirds of the way through my first decent manuscript, if not for her, and I wouldn't be shopping for publishers with the same energy you'd reserve for weekend-grade Facebook putzing-about. I owe her part of my self-acceptance, and part of my discovery of what defines my routine to this day. Isabelle was my first meditation coach.

And in three to five years, she might be gone.

I just thought grief might be... noisier, is all. Louder. Right now, it's just germane to confusion, and it's sitting there. There's a pinch of fear in it, too. My parents are in their mid-sixties. How long do I have left with them?!

And the family and I just covered that up with jokes and, well, cooking. I've been told I'd make a half-decent therapist but - navigating your own emotions is hard work...

I don't know. I guess I needed to put this down somewhere.

No idea how to approach this. Though first things first: English is not my native language and I have some trouble with languages (even my native) [mostly speaking and writing… and understanding (the hearing part but sometime also the meaning part) – okay I just can’t language – sorry] and this thingy here will be long, again – sorry Though I learned to understand written english just so I could read more fanfictions (‘cause the ones in my native language didn’t satisfy me anymore) - spend a whole summer just reading stuff in english and now I *need* to read everything in english and watch things in their native production language (synchro is weird af) and if possible with subtitles (books: if it’s the authors native language; otherwise both languages (german and english) would be translated and then it doesn’t really matter, most of the time anyway)

I think I might be autistic / have adhd ? not sure, going to someone (professional) is not really an option as that would take at least 6 to 12 month to even get maybe a appointment… and it involves a lot of social interaction that would stress all people – even those that don’t have to think about *every* interaction they have with eachother… like no planning or thinking about what you have to say or can’t say and what’s appropriate? Like that is a thing – always wondered how most people got through life when everything is so damn hard. It is apparently a thing that isn’t so quite normal… lol*

Okay, most of the time (that I remember) wondered how that worked for everyone else except me – how they get through life thinking all those things, or well… don’t thinking all those things like HOW?!? Why can you “people”? and I learned it’s important if you’re a girl or not; so yeah, girl here. Followed adhd / autism stuff for a few month / weeks and now again for the last days (it’s an on and off thing). so yeah, I can relate to so much on like everything. Long time I thought, nah, can’t have it: good in school (more so when I was younger but never actually bad), finished school good (though could have been better, if I had studied once (like for my oral exam, I opened the document that should help us learn one whole time, the morning of the exam so yeah, not good at that; brain just goes, heard it once, why should I read this information? Can’t really recall it but while reading I “know” it, so WhAt Is STuDyInG?)) anyway (at this point I would have deleted about everything but like 3 or 4 sentences because… rambling. Sorry, but I think it is important what’s actually going on in my brain; I know it’s hard to read lol) considering all those things I read here (and on other blogs and stuff), I would explain so much about what’s going on in my life (I made a document where I collect all that stuff but it’s redundant sometimes and really messy; try to make a short list with most important things).

Like as a kid, it took me longer than other kids for this social stuff (not like it got “everything”, just enough to communicate more or less lol) or I was so freaking focused on rules; one example is at the train station, there is this line to indicate where you should wait for the train and the other side is where you’re allowed to step once the train is in the station – I lost it, when that rule wasn’t followed (never really big, loud but I was really upset – you know, I learned that it isn’t “allowed” to act out in public). Another thing, I would always get the adults (or kids) around me to speak to others: I mean, I wanted ice cream? Couldn’t order it (still hard to this day – I’m 19 years old btw) or any other basic interaction stuff – I mean I broke every connection to my best friend (in 6th grade, so I was like 10 or 11) because he broke a rule while playing “hide and seek” like yeah, one rule one time while playing and I didn’t speak to him for like 6-7 years (met him at driving school again lol) and I still have his book because I didn’t want anything to do with him anymore (now it’s just awkward to give it back).

As I was younger I loved reading, couldn’t get me away from it – now not so much lol (books or reading in general is so hard sometimes… most of the time) – but that is more like: I lost myself in the books and was super focused on it – now I “don’t have time” as in I can’t really read a book if I don’t have theoretically the whole day and night – cause if I have to do stuff later “there is not enough time to read a book” because I could get lost in it and miss stuff and 5 hours is like 5 minutes, right? (that is a part of “time blindness”, am I mistaken? – never really related to that on a deeper level but the longer it think about it, the more stuff comes to my mind that could be part of it lol / like I always at least try to) get ready when I want to visit my grandparents, it’s like a ten minute walk so I need at least 45 minutes to prepare. Example: want to be there at 14:00 so I should go to the bathroom around 13:15 the latest, bathroom always takes long ‘cause I get distracted, so I then somehow get going around 13:50 – spoiler: I need more like at least 15 minutes not less then 10 to get to my grandparents by foot – and where is the time? I got out of the bathroom somewhere before 13:40 most of the time – I do the exact same things every time and sometimes I’m like: oh, it’s like 13:25/13:30, why would I think I need so much time to get ready? And then most often I need longer – and no, then I start to got even earlier (bathroom is like the first thing in the routine I do before I have to leave the house) and somehow it is now 13:45 and I just leave the bathroom – HOW??)

Okay, MSWord tells me, I have written like almost a 1100 words and haven’t even looked at my 11 page document – sorry (can I even write that many words in an ask at tumblr?)

Another thing I found is RSD – of my god (I usually don’t like to use it like that but omg), that explains so much – don’t want to write too much (missed quite a few “too”s I think lol hope you understand anyway) – I really react so intense to small, constructive criticism and I didn’t (don’t) understand why; and question everything; I remember everything I did wrong (so many “small” things but I’m such bad at human sometimes) and the feels and oh no, I didn’t even do something wrong, my coworker/sort-of-not-really-friend told me how I could have slightly improved what I did: I’m such a bad human, I can’t do anything right and they won’t want to have to do anything with me again – thank you brain, not helpful. One other thing was, like I asked for one weekend of and I wasn’t allowed to take it ‘cause they planned to or already shifted an event (couldn’t really focus on that) to that weekend and I didn’t know it and when they said “no”, in that situation I could have lost it, I was almost in tears (you do not cry in public lol) and thought, how could I even ask that and be soo egoistic (along the lines of that).

This next one is just the text copied from a post but that is like exactly what it is for me:

Found another post with autism signs in adults (that my have been missed as kids), I took out everything I don’t really relate to (like 5 or 6 things lol):

-          may constantly rehears conversations or interactions

-          may feel as though you are always on stage

-          may have a few close friends, not many acquaintances

-          may struggle with other people breaking rules (RULES ARE ABSOLUT – HOW CAN YOU BREAK THEM?)

-          may often fidget, chew, tap, or other repetitive behaviors

-          may get more or less upset at something than is “appropriate”

-          may struggle to adjust when plans change without warning

-          may have routines that don’t seem to have a real purpose

-          may struggle in situations that are unfamiliar

-          may be a very picky eater with few preferred foods

-          may struggle with noises, touching, or sensory input

-          may struggle to process visual or auditory information

-          may struggle to settle body down enough for restful sleep (though I now have a weighted blanket and that’s soo awesome, it really helps at least a bit (don’t wake up that often at night anymore))

-          may struggle to keep track of a fast conversation

-          may take jokes very literally, and not understand teasing

-          may miss sarcasm or subtleties while others are speaking

I understand teasing, I can more or less successful tease and be sarcastic but I’m not sure if people are teasing me. I do not prefer to communicate via text or email. It is still very stressful for me - a telephone is also bad (tone and stuff, not understanding the words correct and not even seeing the other person and in person is also bad – so no to communication and/or interaction lol)

I could provide example for everything but I’m at around 1700 words and just no.

Didn’t really mention sensory stuff, another post I found: “basically, your day-to-day sensory input shouldn’t be causing you distress. sounds wild, i know, but it’s not neurotypical for the stimuli (be it sound, touch, visual, etc etc) you encounter on a day-to-day basis to make you unhappy. also, if busy shopping malls or crowded parties consistently cause you distress or agitation, that’s a neurodiverse thing. it sounds strange, but apparently but yeah, it’s normal for most people to expect to be comfortable in their day to day surroundings.”

Like on one level, I knew it couldn’t be quite “normal” to be always uneasy in “normal” day to day surroundings but like, I can’t understand how people can not find it hard to be in such environment (I heard some enjoy it even, like HOW?).

Random interjection ‘cause I wanted to say something to thing from the beginning: * “Allistics do not “prepare” in order to socialize.  They do not have scripts.  They do not write them, memorize them, or use them.  They just magically know what to say. “ yeah, wow, didn’t realise that for a long time, and it is really magically. But somehow they can; I still ask my mom to help me write emails (more or less important ones) ‘cause it’s hard and she’s always like: “we do it so often, why do you still need help, just write” – not helpful and we didn’t do it actually ‘cause it is a complete different situation now lol every new email is a new thing… I need to think about what to say to the cashier every damn time I’m in the supermarket lol; if I don’t have to talk, someone else orders for me (they thinks I’m lazy or so, I don’t know but it’s so hard and you know what to do, so you can do it lol)

And that executive dysfunction thingy also explains a lot – I mean, I like languages, I’m just not good at that speaking/hearing the words thing – still, I learn Ancient Greek as a sort of hobby (I mean, I learn it for so long now, it’s too late to stop, that would be weird and it is really interesting, just really hard) and I needed like 7 hours to do the work (like, got out of bed, got breakfast, started the computer and did like 30 minutes of working, then did some stuff on the internet for like an hour and then ate my forgotten breakfast, then did some more browsing (I need to do the work cause I have to send it to my teacher this evening lol) some work for like almost an hour, some more phone, a bit of work – and so on. I did some work (but like so many people would have done more or needed less time lol) – anyway I know I really need to work on the language and I just… don’t. arg, that sucks so much, every week I think, I could start doing things on Saturday and then everyday a bit so I have like six days to do some work and every time it’s Thursday and I’m like, lol 10 hours for doing a weeks work. And it’s not like I could focus for that 10 hours – except when I can but sadly it’s almost never on the things I *need* to do. Anyway if my parents hadn’t provided dinner, I wouldn’t have eaten more than breakfast today – anyways sometime I want ice cream or other stuff and I just… can’t do it like I’m sitting here for an hour now, I’m so freaking bored and I just want ice cream but do I move? Nope, and doing something to not feel bored? Nope. I also mean to get my thingy for my wrist ‘cause I have some problems and typing hurts but lol, nope. An example as kid would be I needed hours to dry myself after a shower and just sit on the floor in my room doing more or less nothing or playing (I now a have strategy but yeah)

So, yeah, sorry; I think it’s quite possible that I’m autistic / have adhd, both or so – am I making things up and this is just my mind going a bit wild? (also, I’ve done some online “tests”; most of the time I get like ¾ of the maximal points, but at least always more than half the full points)

Okay, part two (I’m so sorry) (now it is the 21st of August 2020)

There is so much more I can write about: sorry, again like 1300 words.

Like, special interests – I have no idea; as I kid my teacher had to regularly remind me that I have to leave the classroom for break – cause I was so into my book that I didn’t hear anyone leaving the room or the bell; now I can get really invested in some fanfictions (if I have like five days for myself and nothing to do, it is like 3 books without a break) and I’m at a point where I don’t find (good) new stuff and read the same fanfic again and again (I know exactly what will happen and still love it), sometimes I don’t read it for like a few weeks or month and then like 5 times back to back. I absolutely love Doctor Who (but I’m not excessively obsessive or so and don’t know that many facts just some), just can ramble for a few minutes (okay, everyone who would listen speaks German and my main input for Doctor Who is English, so hard to translate that and stuff). Well back to books: I love them; even though I can’t properly focus much these day, I love them, I need them: but why? I hate that when book covers changes or the side of the book like it’s: publisher, name of book, author and the next book is like name of the book, publisher, author and all is mixed up or the symbol of the publisher is slightly different: why? Can’t it be consistent? Why??.

Routines, rituals and stuff. Yeah, I have for example this one street (they repaired the street but there is a small crack now), I have to cross it on the side that is where the street crosses another and then the last 3 steps have to be on the other side and the fourth is stepping on the sidewalk (I really can’t do it any other way and I hate this one car that always blocks the crack a bit – it shouldn’t be standing there ‘cause it’s almost directly in the crossing lol) when I still was going to school, my way home was very specific and one time there was a building/construction site (just some repairs or work on the pipe lines in the ground) and the first time I saw this I was stressed after a long day of school and almost lost it right there and then, because I couldn’t walk my normal way (and yes, at home I cried at bit); for the next few weeks my way back home was hell. I have some specific routines for the bathroom and showering (though most people have that, right?). I have to pack my things and then my stuff like keys and such in the same way every time. When I need a walk I have like two (or three) routes I can take and I have to do them and almost can’t change them after I started (I can though it really throws me off and I don’t feel really well after that). One time – cause Covid-19 and stuff – you need to use a shopping cart where I live in order to enter the supermarket (so you keep more distance) – so, I went to the market by foot and had everything planned, shortly before I am at the store I realise I don’t have a “chip” (thingy you need to use the shopping cart; don’t know if you know what I mean) and I lost it – my plans and routine how I go shopping to that market (if by foot) was ruined – went back home and cried and raged like for an hour (went later again, cause I really needed stuff and I couldn’t leave that thing open, that also feels… not good – had to finish the walking “round”: to the store, store, back home)

One thing I mentioned before: sensory stuff; yeah, not a fan of “loud” noises (it isn’t always the loudness but more the number of noises). Water in my face (nope, hate it, never under the shower and like a sponge or so is horror (like everywhere on my body), just clean water is okay (but please, I can’t have had soap like right before on my hands)), lights is a day to day thing (though if I’m tired / close to what I think is sensory overload, either the room I’m in gets like darker or lights up so much it’s not tolerable anymore (then I know, I really, really have to leave the room and not see or hear anybody anything anymore)), and food, yeah (everything has its place on my plate and please don’t touch), I’m a really “picky” eater and I absolutely despise like cooked or baked fruits (some vegetables too) (they feel soo weird in my mouth… and taste bad… but the texture alone is… really, really bad) (if I wait a bit more, I could think of more but you get the gist I think)

One thing that throws me off: Since I’m 14 years old, I do some stuff with youth groups like mostly work in the church as a volunteer (like in the (school)holidays going a vacation with a group and such things) – I needed like three years (I was and still am seen as shy, mostly) to really “lead” a group (I really am good at imitating the others that can lead a group, I think) and now after I finished school and am doing a “Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (FSJ)” (voluntary social year) (basically I “work” for a year in a social job (sorry, no idea how to explain it in English) and get not much money (that’s the volunteering-part, but ‘cause I work full-time (38.5 hours a week on paper), I get a bit of money)) – and now I applied for studying for working in a social job – can’t really explain it but important is that I would/will have to work with people and stuff, like my job is to create/plan activities for people (like for example, a meeting every week for old people, free-time activities for teenagers or so). On one level I somehow like that working with people (as long as I know what I do, I had time to plan and everything happens more or less as I imagined/planned), on another level I absolutely… well not hate it… but it is really taxing for me and sometimes I really question myself but then other people say, do it, you’re good at it – and I’m like: yeah? I sometimes feel terrible and have no idea what’s going but okay, good that you don’t see that?! Am I not totally awkward and what? Still, have no clue what I would do instead of that lol (sorry, explained that whole thing real bad; just ask, if something is unclear)

So, two options: either I fake everything I wrote before that last thing and how would that work? Or I’m really good at faking that last thing and how? I have no idea and yeah, I had to write that – can both work? Like, it’s not like that I’m always (really) comfortable doing that social stuff but on the other hand, a bit adrenaline and anxiety makes the life more fun or something like that (and it’s not like, yeay, one time a certain situation managed and the next time I can navigate that somewhat same situation, nope, it’s like nothing ever happened before and that’s… annoying?)

First, I will never, ever, ever judge someone based on how good their English is, whether English is their first language or not.  People communicate the best they can, and that’s all that counts, and it does not matter if it’s “perfect”.

So I can’t address every detail you brought up, because this was a LOT!  I did read all of it though, and the general impression I get is that you’re right, you probably have ADHD, and possibly autism as well, though I am not a doctor and I can’t diagnose you.

You asked a few times if you could be “faking” it, and the answer to that I can say for certain: No, you are not faking.  What you told me here are your life experiences.  I just read a story of “How life is like” for you, and it was not fiction, this is your real perspective about how your brain sees the world.  This is not fake.  This is who you are, and I felt what you wrote was very open and honest, the exact opposite of fake.

Sorry, it’s a messy, long thing but I need a bit of an advice or so – just, like “yeah, could be possible” or “nope.”

Based on your experiences that you shared, I’d say it’s more than likely you have ADHD.  You talk often about trying to complete a task and losing your focus before it’s finished:

This is all very suggestive of ADHD.  You also had some symptoms that could be autism, but it seems like the ADHD is more prominent for you and is affecting you more (keep in mind, I’m only a stranger on the internet, I could be totally wrong).

I’m really happy that you were able to share these thoughts with your grandmother, and that she was open to listening to you about them, even if she didn’t have all the facts.  

I know you said it would be a long wait, and very difficult, to get an appointment with a professional.  But I do really think you should be tested for ADHD.  Maybe your grandmother can help you talk to your mum about it, or maybe your grandmother can make all those phone calls for you (because believe me, I know how difficult it is to make phone calls, they are just as hard for me).  Even if you have to wait a year, it would be worth it to know- and also, because in the case of ADHD, there is medication which can help you.  So it would be really worth it for you to get that, even if you have to wait a long time.

You’re obviously a very detail-oriented, thoughtful person, and I know that you’ve studied this subject inside and out.  You’re not faking, you’re not making it up.  These are your experiences, and they are the truth, and you deserve to be tested if you want to be.

Norway Road Trip with a toddler

If you ever considered visiting Norway, I have one thing to say to you - Go! Go! Go! CI could easily become a number one fan of this country and send messages to a random people convincing them to go there, but I am already nr 1 fan of Mia and it takes all my spare time. One is for sure - it is one of the most beautiful countries I’ve been to (and I’ve been to many) and I don’t even know how to start describing it, as all the words coming to my mind are more or less like “magnificent”, “stunning”, “incredible”, “unspeakable”, “unique”.

Here are some basic and useful info:

- internet - we got a SIM card at Telia, it gives you 10GB for a week and each week you’re there you can add 10 euros and get another 10GB. The only problem was that we could not charge it online by using a German credit card (only Norwegian works). It was a problem, as there’s not too many stores you can recharge it on a way. Having a Norwegian friend could be helpful. I didn’t have one so I ended up asking a salesman in a store to buy it for me and I gave him cash.

- costs - travelling around Norway in a motorhome is a great idea. You loose all the big costs like accommodation, camping sites, restaurants and cafes. In Scandinavia there is this beautiful law that land belongs to everyone, which means that you can park wherever you wish (of course not at someone’s backyard). We did free camping all the time. We cooked in a van and took a shower over there as well. There’s a lot of places where you can refill the water and get rid of the black and grey one. There is also this magical machine, where you place your toilet cassette inside and it does all the work for you (if you ever emptied one, you know what I mean. And… you will never forget the first time you take care of “this business”). Products in shops are a bit more expensive, that’s true. But what can you do, you need to eat plus it’s a very small price to pay for all the beautiful things you’ll see around. You can save money on drinking water, as it’s everywhere around.

- currency - we used a card everywhere, I did not use an ATM once.

- sleeping - anywhere, just like this. There’s so many beautiful spots over there. We did not plan overnight stops, we stopped wherever we love a place. The beautiful thing is that you can make a campfire in Norway. You will see so many prepared by previous travellers places for a fire. You can also use the campground, which are very well prepared and offer a shower :D

- food - I read somewhere that you do not travel to Norway for food. I think that this person did not try delicious fish they have. Another friend told me that she used to spend all her pocket money on fish when she was a kid. I am not surprised at all. They also have amazing local meat and goodies from a forest like blueberries in sugar - definitely recommended! We did not eat in restaurants, we cooked almost all the meals. We like to cook out of local products, it’s exciting and it’s fun to search for new goodies in a local store.

- Norway with a toddler - I think that there’s no better country to travel with a toddler. You have a beautiful animals everywhere, stunning views, many playgrounds. We could not go on a trekking as Mia was simply not interested. Not at all. But we still managed to see stunning places and experience a lot just by driving. Finding a place to stop and explore is not a slight problem and you can share your knowledge of plants and animals with them (mine is not impressive but for Mia I was a plant specialist). The thing about Norway is that, except for a beautiful nature, there’s not much to do. It helps to disconnect, focus on what’s important - hugging and kissing your kid. Just remember that your toddler will not stay happy only with kisses, it needs entertainment. If I can give you one advise about a toy that made our journey so much easier is a modelling clay aka plasticine - Mia loooooooves it! She could spend hours playing with it and making up her strange and super cute stories. She cooked many cakes and pizzas out of it.

- highway - is paid. You can register online and they will send you a bill via email.

- while travelling in Norway you will most probably use some ferries. Nothing to worry. You just go wherever you wish and when you get to the port, you wait in line of cars and give your card or cash before boarding. No need to go anywhere or book things. Easy. It’s also another way to see unique views.

- when to go. We went there in August and there were not that many tourists. July is apparently very busy, but also warmer. I’d love to go back in winter, but for this Mia has to be slightly older and my camper van slightly younger.

Our route:

Let me just write that you don’t really need to focus on getting to places. The whole road to your destination is stunning. If I could, I’d stop each 20m and take pictures. Unfortunately, my kid will make my life a hell if I did so I didn’t. But I did admire it through the window.

Hardangervidda nasjonalpark - We went through while driving from Oslo to Odda. I remember being shocked how stunning it is. We could see the traditional houses with roofs covered in grass, horses and beautiful views. If Mia was more optimistic about trekking, I’d definitely do some. But for now I have a plan to come back when she’s older.

Eidfjord beautiful town with stunning fjords. We stopped there just to take some pictures as you cannot pass next to this view. They do have a good coffee as well :)

Odda - it’s not about Odda itself, but its surroundings. There are some beautiful trekking options in the hood and the town itself is pretty. Little houses on hills are cute as well.

Fjaerland we stopped for a night under a glacier. How crazy amazing is this! When I was travelling with Mia in New Zealand we had to take a helicopter to enjoy it. In Norway it’s just there, waiting for you :D

Skei I Jolster - was my coffee stop. I made my own coffee and stood there staring at this stunning view. There was a house just next to it. If they ever sell it, I’d love to buy it. So I guess I have to start saving 10 years ago.

Loen - one of my favourite spots. Turquoise water, stunning fiords and we had fun over there with Mia. On the end of the road, there’s a very lovely camping site.

Stadlandet - it’s surfers beach and there were many surfers over there. It’s one of these unique places where you have to go down with a very narrow curly road and need to look at all the stunning views on the way. The only minus I guess is that you cannot stop there just like it, you need to pay. It’s obviously more than worth it! We stayed for the sunset over the curly road and it was one of these pure happiness moments.

Runde - unfortunately I did not manage to take pictures of the island as Mia fell asleep on my hands and it was carrying her around for about 45 minutes. After this experience I had to wait a bit before driving as I could not operate the steering wheel. The Island is beautiful and I definitely recommend visiting.

Alesund and Stiftinga Sunnmøre Museum- it’s a village which is a museum. You can check out how they used to live in Norway and it’s pretty cool. You can visit an old shop, check out the buildings or go on a Viking boat!

Trollstigen - this is a hell of an experience, especially for a driver. You want to go down with this road! Not up, at least I prefer not to with my 23 year old van. I do not have a support in a steering wheel and I did it! Just look at all these curly roads.

Atlantic Ocean Road - each part of this road is stunning. These are small islands connected by many bridges. All of them covered with green grass (most probably in the summer) and tiny houses. Behind one, there’s a ship wreck.

Trodheim if I only could sit in one of the cafes and enjoy a view. Meantime, I kept running after Mia, which was pretty awesome as well.

Foldereid we stopped here on our way on the ferry to Lofoten. It’s not a special or a popular spot, I just truly enjoyed the surroundings and took 1000 of pictures over here.

Lofoten - is a unique place in Norway. I will risk writing that it’s a must if you want to see an unspeakable beauty of mountains thrown into a water. Lofoten includes islands connected by bridges or not (so you need to use ferry sometimes, but you don’t need to, depends on where you go). I think that the most popular part is at the end. We got there by ferry and started from there. If you travel without a toddler, I believe you can make some awesome trekking. But I do travel with one and she prefers short ones, which means 15 minutes max. We stopped at a few stops, but to be frank, the whole drive is simply beautiful.

Husoy, Senja - a tiny town located on a tiny island which creates a spectacular view.

Oldervik - town at the end of a road. It’s something what I am glad I experienced as the way over there was filled with horses and beautiful sunrise and I woke up to one of the most beautiful mornings.

Nordkapp - I wanted to skip this part, as thought that I saw enough beauty in Norway and nothing will surprise me. I was obviously wrong. Nordkapp is a must in Norway, at least from my perspective. This is a place where you can hang out with reindeers and I mean it. I woke up to them in the morning. They were sleeping in front of my camper’s door. And I give you 100% chance that you’ll meet them a lot :) The area is also beautiful. I wanted to go there for a day, but I stayed for long. I can totally see myself staying there forever.

Album Review by Bradley Christensen Necrophagist – Onset Of Putrefaction / Epitaph Record Label: Willowtip / Relapse Release Date: September 14 1999 / August 3 2004

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of death metal, both new and old, as well as different subsets of the genre. I’ve been into a lot of melodic death metal, deathgrind, and technical death metal, as well as straightforward death metral, but it’s amazing to me how there are subgenres within subgenres. Only in metal, huh? Each one is different, too, but to the average music fan, or even a casual listener, it’s hard to pick up on. You could think that all of that stuff sounds the same, and a lot of people do, which I can’t really fault them for, but there are very subtle differences in each sound. Let’s look at them briefly. If we’re going from the heaviest, and most brutal, of the sub-subgenres to the “softest” of them, deathgrind is the most brutal. It’s a portmanteau of death metal and grindcore. I don’t listen to grind, but I might want to dabble at some point. Deathgrind combines the two, but it’s ferocious. I listen to a bit, including bands like Aborted, GUTSLIT, Abnormality, Cattle Decapitation, and a few other bands, but it’s more or less a niche kind of death metal. Technical death metal, or tech-death, is the second heaviest, because it’s pretty intense, insane, and the technical skills from the musicianship and instrumentation can be quite wild. One issue I have with the genre is that it can be more style over substance, even though a more technical and impressive sound is really cool. I like a lot of tech-death bands, because I love guitar solos. Next up is more straightforward death metal, and there’s not really much to say about that, just because you probably have an idea of what it sounds like. Gutteral harsh vocals, blast beats, aggressive and brutal instrumentation, lyrics that are very horror-inspired, you know the drill. Melodic death metal, or melo-death, is the lightest kind of death metal, because it’s got more “melody” behind it. The melody, however, is in the guitarwork. The guitarwork is more melodic, definitely not as brutal or intense, but the death metal sound is still there, no matter what. If I had to tell someone what my favorite kind of death metal was, it’s s toss-up between melo-death and tech-death.

If you guessed that it’s because of the guitarwork involved in both sounds, yeah, you’d be right, because that’s what it comes down to. The guitarwork in both sounds is very different, but it serves a different purpose. When I listen to a lot of death metal, I tend to gravitate towards melo-death or tech-death bands. They’re just more interesting to me, even though some deathgrind bands are great, and the more straightforward bands are great, too. Today I’ll be talking about a tech-death band, though, and one of the more influential and essential bands of the genre. That band is Necrophagist, a German tech-death band that’s been around for a long time, but they’ve only released two albums in their 25-year career. How weird is that? I’ll be talking about those albums briefly today, because they’re both rather similar records, but the thing about Necrophagist is that they’re not really a band that I would say is essential to death metal as a whole. If you want to get into tech-death, they’re a great band to start off with, but in terms of death metal as a genre, yeah, they’re not that influential or that essential. For their subgenre, yes, they are, but for the genre itself? No, not really. They’re one of those bands. You know what I’m talking about, right? Those bands that are very, very good, and there’s no denying their quality, but they’re not a band that changed the game, necessarily, only to help further their respective style(s). Necrophagist is one of those bands, but they’re a damn great band. Both of their LPs, 1999’s Onset Of Putrefaction and 2004’s Epitaph, are very fine examples of tech-death. The band does do something that is kind of interesting, where they take classical music, whether they use specific passages or they have elements or influences of classic music in their sound, but otherwise, they’re pretty standard tech-death. The thing that I like about this band a lot, however, is they keep things short. Both albums are under 35 minutes, so you’re not spending a lot of time with this band at all, but it’s clearly a case of quality over quantity.

I love both of these albums at the end of the day, but it’s tricky whether I’d recommend them to someone. I would, especially if you’re into tech-death, and you haven’t listened to them, because they’re top tier stuff, but at the same time, they’re not an essential death metal band. They’re no Deicide, Obituary, Death, or anything like that, because they didn’t quite pioneer tech-death. If anything, they just further the genre, so they can do more with it, but that’s still worth mentioning. It’s still worth giving them credit, because they are very, very good. This is top tier tech-death of the highest quality, and this what tech-death bands should aspire to be. They’re killer. At the same time, though, they’re not life-changing or influential albums that you’ll see on a best of list of all time, even though you might if you’re a tech-death / death metal fan. That’s one thing, but metal as a whole, or death metal as a whole? Not really. I can understand that, but at the same time, these albums kick ass. As a death metal fan, especially tech-death, I’m pretty into these, but I could understand someone not being into them, or even thinking they’re pretentious wankery records. Necrophagist didn’t necessarily change the game, either, but that doesn’t mean they’re not good. They’re not an essential band that’s at the top tier level, even though they are top tier tech-death. For their genre, they’re great, but at the same time, they’re not a band that a metal fan needs to hear, per se. I mean, I would listen to them if you’re curious, and you’re into more extreme metal, but you’re not necessarily missing anything that you couldn’t get from Death, for example, especially on a record on like 1993’s Individual Thought Patterns, or 1998’s The Sound Of Perseverance. They really helped to pioneer tech-death, but Necrophagist helped to further the genre, meaning that they added to it. They didn’t influence the genre, necessarily, but they expanded the limits of the genre. Either way, though, both of these records are some top notch tech-death, and if you’re a tech-death fan, death metal fan, or you appreciate insane, awesome, and somewhat progressive guitarwork, definitely give these albums a listen, because you most likely won’t be disappointed.

The Most Vital SEO Strategy I Learned Came From a Google Employee

I don’t think I am the best SEO out there. And I am not the most well-known SEO.

But when you have been doing SEO as long as I have, eventually you meet most of the players in the space.

And over the years, I’ve met a lot of Google employees. Some of them were in high positions, while others were not.

Out of all of the Google employees I met, none of them told me anything that shouldn’t be made public. And I also never put anyone in a position that would compromise their job.

But what was crazy is that the SEO advice I got on August, 2015, from a Google employee changed my life.

And what’s even crazier is that the advice I got on that particular day, is probably known by almost every SEO out there, but I bet less than .01% of SEOs use this strategy.

In other words, a Google employee shared knowledge that was readily available on any major search blog, yet I was too lazy to implement what I already knew.

So what did I learn?

Well, before I go into what I learned, lets first share the results of this one SEO tactic. The reason I’m doing this is that if I just share the tactic with you, most of you are going to ignore it like I did.

But if I share the stats with you first, hopefully, you’ll be more open to implementing what I am about to teach you.

So here are my traffic stats from August 2015 for NeilPatel.com:

As you can see from the image above my traffic was growing. I went from roughly 100,493 unique visitors a month to 144,196. Not too bad.

But here is the thing… my traffic was naturally growing from all of my other marketing efforts. And I didn’t even start implementing what I learned from Google until November 28, 2015.

And the results didn’t kick in right away. It took over a year before I really started seeing growth. But once I hit the 21-month mark, things really started to skyrocket.

So, what was the big lesson?

Well, maybe you’ll be able to figure it out by looking at the screenshots below. What’s the big difference in the screenshots below?

What’s the big difference between them?

All three of the blogs are about marketing. The content is similar… so what’s the difference?

KISSmetrics and Quick Sprout generate their traffic from roughly the same regions. But NeilPatel.com, on the other hand, generates traffic from regions like Brazil, Spain, and Germany at a much higher percentage.

So why is this?

Google told me to go multi-lingual

It’s hard to rank on Google.

No matter how many blog posts I write about SEO, most of you won’t rank well because it takes a lot of time and countless hours of work (or money).

But as my friend at Google once told me…

There is already a lot of content in English but not enough in other languages even though the majority of the people in this world don’t speak English.

In other words, you need to translate your content.

On November 28, 2015, I published my first article in Portuguese (if you click the link there is a good chance it keeps you on the English site, so you may have to click the flag next to the Neil Patel logo and select Brazil after you click on the link).

Fast forward to today and I have 4,806 blog posts published on NeilPatel.com of which 1,265 are in Portuguese, 650 are in German, and 721 are in Spanish.

I slowly starting to go after more languages because the strategy is working. Here are my traffic stats in the last 31 days in Brazil:

It takes time to do well within each region when you localize the content, but it’s worth it because there is literally no competition.

Seriously, no competition!!!

And I know what you are thinking… people in many of these countries don’t have as much money, so the traffic is useless and won’t convert.

If that’s what you are thinking then let me be the first to tell you that you are way off!

You need to look beyond English!

The data shows the majority of the world doesn’t live in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, or Australia.

There are so many other countries to focus on.

Not only is there a lot of people in regions like Brazil, but their GDP isn’t too bad. And yes, there isn’t as much money to be made in Brazil as there is to be made in the United States… but in the U.S. you have a lot of competitors.

While in Brazil, it’s much easier to dominate, which means you can probably make as much money in Brazil as you do in the U.S.

To give you an idea, when my ad agency expanded to Brazil, we generated over a million dollars in revenue in less than 12 months when I can’t even speak one word of Portuguese.

Well, technically that’s a lie. I know enough Portuguese to order a water and tell the waiter that I don’t want salt on my food 😉

Just think of it this way, we were able to grow when only 3% of Brazilians speak English. That means I had little to no involvement, yet we still do decently well.

And my efforts look minuscule when you compare them to companies like Amazon. They keep investing in regions like India even though it keeps losing them money. They even announced how they are going to pour in an additional 2 billion dollars.

If you want to grow fast like Amazon, you have to start thinking big.

And international expansion should be one of those big thoughts.

Even if you aren’t able to service some of these regions, what’s the harm in spending money to first build up your company’s brand and traffic in those regions? You can then worry about monetization later on.

But you better hurry… time is running out.

It’s like the wild west

During one of my trips to Brazil, I had a meeting with Andre Esteves. The meeting was only supposed to be an hour, but it lasted almost 3, which is a very long time considering he’s worth $2 billion.

In that time, we talked shop, we shared stories from our personal life, he convinced me to stop investing in hedge funds, and to put all of my money back into the web… and best of all — he explained how regions like Brazil are the wild west.

But he didn’t mean that in a negative way. The opposite really.

Instead, he was just explaining how regions like Brazil have little to no competition and are growing fast. Those who are patient will make a lot of money in the long run.

He was spot on!

It’s why Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft focus heavily on internationalization. They all know you can’t build a gigantic business if you only focus on the English-speaking market.

To give you an idea on how much energy these companies spend on globalization, one of my Microsoft friends (who’s an executive), broke down why Microsoft is trying to stop piracy in China.

If everyone in China stopped pirating Microsoft products and paid for them instead, it would add roughly 138 billion dollars to their market cap (according to him).

That’s insane!

Now, of course, if they stopped piracy, not all of those people will pay for their products. But still, it just shows how much more money is to be made by Microsoft in China.

There is even a ton of money to be made overseas for you. You just have to be willing to make the bet.

You’ve already seen my traffic stats and you know I’m growing fast overseas. I’m not monetizing in enough of those regions and that will change as time goes on.

But I made the internationalization bet years ago, and I keep increasing the amount I spend each year.

Here’s how you expand internationally

I’ve done better in Brazil than Germany and all of the Spanish markets. It’s not because I started to go after Brazil first, it’s because I had people on the ground in Brazil from day one.

It took me too long before I started to add people from those regions to the team and expand.

If you don’t speak the language and you don’t understand the culture you won’t do well no matter how good you are at marketing.

This was my biggest lesson I learned, you need people on the ground!

The second lesson I learned is translating your content isn’t enough.

Even if you adapt the content to the region by adjusting everything, you still won’t be successful because people within each region maybe looking for something else.

For example, in the United States, companies are looking for me to write more advanced marketing content. In parts of Latin America, on the other hand, people are looking to learn the fundamentals of online marketing.

For that reason, my team had to start creating new content just for regions like Brazil. This helped tremendously.

As you can see from the screenshot above, the most popular piece of content written for Brazil wasn’t a translation (it’s number 2 on the list, number 1 is a tool).

I rank #2 (behind Wikipedia) and before the YouTube results for the popular search term portfolio: 

And that image above also gets me to my last point. You need to really build a brand in each region or else you won’t do well.

I speak at more conferences in Brazil than I do in Germany or any Spanish country.

Although people believe there isn’t much money to be made from Brazil, I get paid $25,000 to $50,000 for an hour speaking spot every time I fly out there.

Eventually, I learned better ways to grow my brand internationally than speaking (as that isn’t scalable).

I acquired the tool Ubersuggest for $120,000 as it has a lot of traffic from different parts of the world. Now I am improving the tool and expanding its functionality betting that in the long term it will bring me even more traffic and awareness.

I know the advice my Google friend gave me wasn’t rocket science, but hey, it worked really well.

We tend to forget and even ignore the things that are staring directly at us.

We all know the majority of the world doesn’t speak English, yet we all focus our marketing efforts on the English market.

If I were starting all over again, I wouldn’t create a website in English. Instead, I would pick a region in Europe, like France or Germany, where it isn’t as competitive and where their currency is worth more than the dollar.

Not only would I see results faster, but I would make more money because there wouldn’t be as much competition.

And yes, it did take me a while to see results, but since then I have run many more experiments and if I had to start over again I would:

Google doesn’t penalize you for duplicate content. Translating your content and using hreflang won’t get you penalized.

Now, if you use an automatic translation software and your translations are done poorly, your user metrics will probably suffer and there is a higher chance you’ll suffer from a Google penalty. So translate your content manually.

Even More Top Ten Travel Lists!

As part of a continuing series over the holidays, I have been publishing a series of top ten lists. Last week I published a list of the top ten travel destinations that you might not think of to visit. I also published a separate list of the top ten top travel destinations. Earlier this week, I posted Top Ten Lists for London and Paris. Next week, I will finally get around to publishing the Top Ten D&O Stories of 2018. But today, I am posting several additional top ten lists, just to round out the holiday season before returning to this blog’s more accustomed topics.

  My first Top Ten list in today’s post is my list of the Top Ten Museums. Just a few introductory words about my list of museums. There are some museums that everyone knows are great. For example, no one needs me to tell them that the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the British Museum and the National Gallery in London are top museums and worth seeing. So I have left those Museums off of the list, to leave so room for some other museums that may not be as well known. Here’s my list of top ten museums, starting with number 10. (Please also see my other Top Ten list, below, as well.)

  Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin

10. Checkpoint Charlie Museum (Berlin): Berlin is such an interesting city. Even though it has been a number of years now since the city has been divided, the Wall continues to cast a shadow. A number of sections of the Wall have been carefully preserved. The area around Checkpoint Charlie (the crossing point for entry into the American sector of occupied Berlin) includes a number of different memorials about The Wall. The Checkpoint Charlie Museum provides an interesting overview of The Wall’s history – how events at the end of WW II (including the Berlin airlift), and post-war events, like the nuclear arms race, the Hungarian uprising and the Cuban Missile crisis, led to the building of The Wall. The museum includes an interesting and sometimes tragic account of the many escape attempts as well, and a moving display about the events the led to the Wall’s fall.

  9. Seurasaari Open-Air Museum (Helsinki, Finland): The Seurasaari Musuem is an outdoor Finnish culture and heritage museum located in Helsinki. The Museum’s collection consists of a series of buildings, homes, and churches transported from around the country to a wooded outdoor setting. There are similar outdoor museums in Norway and Sweden, but what makes the Finnish version so special is its location on rustic, heavily wooded island connected to the mainland by a narrow footbridge. The Museum, which is interesting enough, takes up only a small part of the island; the rest of the island is a beautiful, forested preserve, full of flowering plants and wildlife. When we visited, we intended only to stay an hour or two and wound up spending the entire day walking through the woods and along the island shoreline.

8. Warsaw Rising Museum (Warsaw, Poland): In August 1944, as the Soviet Army approached from the East, the Polish Home Army rose up against the occupying Nazi Germans. The locals anticipated that the Soviets would support their efforts; but instead, the advancing opposing army paused on the far side of the river. The last thing in the world Stalin wanted was an independent, effective military force in Poland. The tenacity of the locals surprised both the Germans and the Soviets, and the rising lasted longer than anyone anticipated. When it was finally suppressed, Hitler ordered that Warsaw should be destroyed, a task the Nazis completed with grim efficiency. Among the many terrible events in World War II, the Warsaw Rising may be one of the most tragic. This museum tells the story in great detail, emphasizing stories of the people who fought in the rising and how they were able to fight so effectively against a modern, well-equipped, professional army. If you go to Warsaw, you have to visit the Warsaw Rising Museum.

  Museo del Prado, Madrid

7. Museo del Prado (Madrid, Spain): The Prado is of course one of the most famous art museums in the world, very much in the same league of the famous museums in Paris in London that I deliberately left off this list. However, there is a very specific reason I included the Prado on this list. The Prado of course has an extensive collection of Spanish art, but much of it consists of portraits of overfed Habsburgs and Bourbons. What makes the Prado particularly interesting and worth visiting are the several paintings in its collection by Valazquez and Goya, particularly the exhibit of Goya’s Pinturas Negras (Black Paintings). Goya painted this group of 14 dark, haunting, obscure paintings on the walls of his home. The paintings were never intended for public exhibition, but they may be among the most interesting (although also arguably disturbing) works of art you will ever see anywhere.

    Museum of Occupations, Tallinn

6. Museum of Occupations (Tallinn, Estonia): Estonia’s 20th Century history was complicated and eventful. During the Second World War, the country was first overrun by the Soviets, invaded and captured by Nazi Germany, and then invaded again by the Soviet army. Following the war, the country remained a part of the U.S.S.R. until 1991. The Museum of Occupations explores this complicated, difficult history using video footage, photographs, interactive technology, and an extensive collection of artifacts. The museum provides deep insight into the country’s difficult 20th century history. Among other things, it really helps you understand what the country has accomplished to achieve its current stability and prosperity.

  Vasa Museum, Stockholm

5. Vasa Museum (Stockholm): The Vasa Museum houses the Vasa warship, which foundered and sank on its maiden voyage on August 10, 1628. The ship sat at the bottom of the harbor in Stockholm for centuries until it was salvaged more or less intact in 1961. You might not think a badly designed sunken ship would make for much a museum, but the museum is actually really interesting. Vikingskipshuset/Viking Ship Museum (Oslo, Norway): The Viking Ship Museum houses three more or less intact Viking ships that were recovered from excavated burial mounds in Norway, as well as a trove of Viking artifacts collected from around the world. It is quite an experience to see first-hand how massive the Viking ships were. You can only imagine how terrifying it might have been for a fleet of these huge ships to appear on the horizon. The exhibits explain how the ships’ sturdy construction allowed the Vikings to range so far across the seas. The exhibits also show just how far afield the Vikings roamed. This museum is relatively small and compact but a very interesting place to visit.

3. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya/ King Shivaji Museum (Mumbai, India): The King Shivaji Museum is the principal museum in Mumbai. The museum itself is interesting in its urban context; the museum and its grounds are something of an island of calm amidst the chaotic kaleidoscope of Mumbai’s sometimes overwhelming sights and sounds. The museum’s collection includes vast array of art and architecture from throughout India’s history. The museum has a particularly interesting collection of artifacts from Indus Valley Civilization, as well as of other relics from ancient India in the time of the Guptas and Mauryas. The archeological exhibits include an extensive sculpture gallery including religious art from throughout India’s history. The museum is in effect an entire curriculum on art, history, culture, and religion on the Indian subcontinent.

    European Hansamuseum, Lübeck

2. European Hansamuseum (Lübeck, Germany): The Hanseatic League was a commercial and defensive confederation that thrived in Northwestern and Central Europe between the 1100s and the 1400s. For much of its history the League was based in Lübeck, which for a time was one of the wealthiest cities in the world. Lübeck is now home to the European Hansamuseum, an absolutely terrific museum that opened in May 2015. The Museum makes very creative use of technology to explain the League’s history, and to show how the League’s members overcame problems of language, currency, piracy, and geography to establish a thriving trade business across northern Europe. The museum includes interesting exhibits on how the League used flexible dispute resolution mechanisms to avoid deeper problems, as well as how cultural, social, and religious trends followed in the wake of the League’s activities. An interesting museum about an interesting time in European history.

1. The Gutenberg Museum (Mainz, Germany): The printer, inventor and publisher Johannes Gutenberg best known for introducing movable type printing to Europe was born in Mainz and established his first printing press there. The Gutenberg Museum includes original copies of many of his first printed products, including several of his famous bibles. But this museum is about so much more than what Gutenberg did and accomplished. The museum in effect represents an overview of the entire history of printing, and not just in Europe but around the world. The museum’s fascinating collection contains many interesting exhibits including a number of early printing presses, as well as interesting displays explaining the changes and improvements in printing technology over time. This museum is an absolutely fascinating place.

  My list of museums might be interpreted to suggest that while I travel I devote myself exclusively to improving activities and high-brow entertainment. In truth, from time to time when I travel, I sometimes take advantage of the opportunity to, say, have a beer. There are a number of great places to enjoy having a beer. Here is my list of the top ten places to enjoy a beer.

  10. Temple Bar (Dublin): The Temple Bar district in Dublin is just off of the Liffey River, near Trinity College. The area’s cobble-stone streets are lined with pubs, cafes, and restaurants. There is actually one bar called Temple Bar, but there are many other great bars in the area. Many of the bars have live Irish music. The area can be quite touristy but if you make your way into the side streets, there are some places that aren’t quite as full of American college kids. Just find a place you like and have a Guinness. It is great fun.

  9. Köln/Cologne (Germany): Cologne is the only city where beer that properly calls itself kölsch can be made. It is a delightfully light and refreshing beer, traditional served in small cylindrical glasses of only a few ounces. Throughout the old part of the city, there are numerous atmospheric pubs where the traditional local beer is served. Servers make their way around the tables, replacing empties with full glasses, marking the number of glasses consumed with a pencil mark on your coaster. The full glasses will keep appearing until you put your coaster on top of your empty glass, signaling you have had enough. For anyone that enjoys beer, Cologne is an absolutely mandatory destination.

      8. Bratislava (Slovakia): In recent years, Bratislava’s old town has been beautifully restored. At the heart of the old town is Hviezdoslavovo námestie (Hviezdoslav Square), a long shady plaza with several fountains and lined with restaurants and cafés. The plaza is about as pleasant a location for a morning coffee or an afternoon beverage as you will ever find anywhere. The pedestrianized streets leading off of the plaza are lined with renovated buildings and more restaurants and cafes. On the quiet side streets, there are a number of quiet sidewalk cafes. Have a seat and enjoy some of the excellent Slovakian beer.

      7. Holland Park (Singapore): Because Singapore is located just 80 miles from the equator, it is warm there every evening. There are a number of great areas in the city to go out in the evening. For example, along the Singapore River there are a number of quays that have been re-developed with restaurants and bars. One particular place I enjoy going out for some food and a beer is the Holland Park area. There is a huge indoor food court area serving a wide variety of food. Along the main streets are a number of sidewalk cafes where you can sit and enjoy an evening beverage while the world goes by. On one visit, I compared the vibe to the feeling in an American college town, during the summer. Relaxed and easy.

  6. St. Pauli (Hamburg, Germany): The St. Pauli district is a much livelier and a little bit rowdier place to go for a beer. The main street running through the district, the Reeperbahn, is lined with bars and restaurants, but from my experience the best places to go are on the side streets. The St. Pauli district is not for everyone; the city’s redlight district is located in an adjacent side street, and the Reeperbaum itself has some downright seedy establishments as well. Just the same, the area’s street life is lively and interesting, and the many bars in the area (or at least some of them) are great places to enjoy a beer and maybe watch a football match.

  5. Prague (Czech Republic): Prague is a great city to visit. It has many well-preserved historical buildings. It also has a great night-life. There are a lot of bars throughout the central district. I found that I preferred the quieter streets in the Malá Strana on the far side of the river. There are a number of quiet cafés without door seating along the canal. One place I particularly enjoyed was the Restaurace Velkopřevorský Mlýn, a quiet, shady canalside café, where we enjoyed some of the excellent Staropramen beer, which has its brewery along the river, right in Prague. There are a number of other excellent places along the canals to enjoy a beer on a quiet afternoon.

Schleusenkrug (Berlin, Germany): There are a lot of great places to enjoy a beer in Berlin, but one of the best places to have a beer, in Berlin or anywhere, is the Schleusenkrug, located in the Tiegarten, the city’s massive park. The beer garden’s sun-dappled tables sit in a quiet courtyard under huge mature trees. The establishment has a peaceful, calm area, perhaps in part because it can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. Quite a number of families with children seem to favor the place. A great place to have a quiet beer and a bit of traditional German food.

    3. Place de la Contrascarpe (Paris): Paris is of course famous for its sidewalk cafes. I think most people picturing themselves sitting at a sidewalk café might also imagine a glass of wine at their elbow. However, most sidewalk cafes also serve beer, and sitting at a sidewalk café with a beer and watching the endless Parisian parade is an excellent way to enjoy an evening in the city. There are a number of great areas to sit at a table and enjoy watching the evening crowd. For example, one area I like is the Rue de Buci, a particularly lively street in the 6e arrondissement. But if I had to choose one place in Paris to go for an evening beer, I think I would choose the Place de la Contrascarpe, a quiet square in the 5e arrondissement that has the feel of a village square. Because of its proximity to La Sorbonne, the crowd tends to be younger, livelier, and interesting.

  2. Anglesea Arms (London): There are a lot of great pubs in London. In fact, having the opportunity to enjoy a pub is one of the great reasons to go to London. I have a long list of pubs in London that I like. I could in fact write a blog post just about my favorite London pubs. But if I had to choose one, I would recommend the Anglesea Arms, on a quiet residential street near the South Kensington tube station. This traditional non-chain pub, unusually, has an outdoor seating area. On a warm spring evening, it is great place to sit and enjoy the crowd of locals, and watch the neighbors stroll by.

    1. Chinesischer Turm (Munich): There are a lot of great beer gardens in Munich, but on a sunny day, my favorite is the Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower) beer garden, in the center of the Englischer Garten, Munich’s largest park. The beer garden surrounds a pagoda-style wooden tower, where oompa-oompa bands sometimes play. On a sunny afternoon, as many as 7,000 people can sit in the dappled sunlight under huge Chestnut trees and enjoy the excellent local Hofbräu beer.

Even More Top Ten Travel Lists!

As part of a continuing series over the holidays, I have been publishing a series of top ten lists. Last week I published a list of the top ten travel destinations that you might not think of to visit. I also published a separate list of the top ten top travel destinations. Earlier this week, I posted Top Ten Lists for London and Paris. Next week, I will finally get around to publishing the Top Ten D&O Stories of 2018. But today, I am posting several additional top ten lists, just to round out the holiday season before returning to this blog’s more accustomed topics.

  My first Top Ten list in today’s post is my list of the Top Ten Museums. Just a few introductory words about my list of museums. There are some museums that everyone knows are great. For example, no one needs me to tell them that the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the British Museum and the National Gallery in London are top museums and worth seeing. So I have left those Museums off of the list, to leave so room for some other museums that may not be as well known. Here’s my list of top ten museums, starting with number 10. (Please also see my other Top Ten list, below, as well.)

  Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin

10. Checkpoint Charlie Museum (Berlin): Berlin is such an interesting city. Even though it has been a number of years now since the city has been divided, the Wall continues to cast a shadow. A number of sections of the Wall have been carefully preserved. The area around Checkpoint Charlie (the crossing point for entry into the American sector of occupied Berlin) includes a number of different memorials about The Wall. The Checkpoint Charlie Museum provides an interesting overview of The Wall’s history – how events at the end of WW II (including the Berlin airlift), and post-war events, like the nuclear arms race, the Hungarian uprising and the Cuban Missile crisis, led to the building of The Wall. The museum includes an interesting and sometimes tragic account of the many escape attempts as well, and a moving display about the events the led to the Wall’s fall.

  9. Seurasaari Open-Air Museum (Helsinki, Finland): The Seurasaari Musuem is an outdoor Finnish culture and heritage museum located in Helsinki. The Museum’s collection consists of a series of buildings, homes, and churches transported from around the country to a wooded outdoor setting. There are similar outdoor museums in Norway and Sweden, but what makes the Finnish version so special is its location on rustic, heavily wooded island connected to the mainland by a narrow footbridge. The Museum, which is interesting enough, takes up only a small part of the island; the rest of the island is a beautiful, forested preserve, full of flowering plants and wildlife. When we visited, we intended only to stay an hour or two and wound up spending the entire day walking through the woods and along the island shoreline.

8. Warsaw Rising Museum (Warsaw, Poland): In August 1944, as the Soviet Army approached from the East, the Polish Home Army rose up against the occupying Nazi Germans. The locals anticipated that the Soviets would support their efforts; but instead, the advancing opposing army paused on the far side of the river. The last thing in the world Stalin wanted was an independent, effective military force in Poland. The tenacity of the locals surprised both the Germans and the Soviets, and the rising lasted longer than anyone anticipated. When it was finally suppressed, Hitler ordered that Warsaw should be destroyed, a task the Nazis completed with grim efficiency. Among the many terrible events in World War II, the Warsaw Rising may be one of the most tragic. This museum tells the story in great detail, emphasizing stories of the people who fought in the rising and how they were able to fight so effectively against a modern, well-equipped, professional army. If you go to Warsaw, you have to visit the Warsaw Rising Museum.

7. Museo del Prado (Madrid, Spain): The Prado is of course one of the most famous art museums in the world, very much in the same league of the famous museums in Paris in London that I deliberately left off this list. However, there is a very specific reason I included the Prado on this list. The Prado of course has an extensive collection of Spanish art, but much of it consists of portraits of overfed Habsburgs and Bourbons. What makes the Prado particularly interesting and worth visiting are the several paintings in its collection by Valazquez and Goya, particularly the exhibit of Goya’s Pinturas Negras (Black Paintings). Goya painted this group of 14 dark, haunting, obscure paintings on the walls of his home. The paintings were never intended for public exhibition, but they may be among the most interesting (although also arguably disturbing) works of art you will ever see anywhere.

6. Museum of Occupations (Tallinn, Estonia): Estonia’s 20th Century history was complicated and eventful. During the Second World War, the country was first overrun by the Soviets, invaded and captured by Nazi Germany, and then invaded again by the Soviet army. Following the war, the country remained a part of the U.S.S.R. until 1991. The Museum of Occupations explores this complicated, difficult history using video footage, photographs, interactive technology, and an extensive collection of artifacts. The museum provides deep insight into the country’s difficult 20th century history. Among other things, it really helps you understand what the country has accomplished to achieve its current stability and prosperity.

5. Vasa Museum (Stockholm): The Vasa Museum houses the Vasa warship, which foundered and sank on its maiden voyage on August 10, 1628. The ship sat at the bottom of the harbor in Stockholm for centuries until it was salvaged more or less intact in 1961. You might not think a badly designed sunken ship would make for much a museum, but the museum is actually really interesting. There is of course the recovered ship itself, but what makes the museum so interesting are the exhibits showing how the sunken hull was located on the harbor bottom and how it was brought to the surface, as well as how the unique conditions in the Stockholm harbor preserved the hull so well.

Earlier this week, I posted Top Ten Lists for London and Paris. Next week, I will finally get around to publishing the Top Ten D&O Stories of 2018. But today, I am posting several additional top ten lists, just to round out the holiday season before returning to this blog’s more accustomed topics.

  My first Top Ten list in today’s post is my list of the Top Ten Museums. Just a few introductory words about my list of museums. There are some museums that everyone knows are great. For example, no one needs me to tell them that the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the British Museum and the National Gallery in London are top museums and worth seeing. So I have left those Museums off of the list, to leave so room for some other museums that may not be as well known. Here’s my list of top ten museums, starting with number 10. (Please also see my other Top Ten list, below, as well.)

  Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin

10. Checkpoint Charlie Museum (Berlin): Berlin is such an interesting city. Even though it has been a number of years now since the city has been divided, the Wall continues to cast a shadow. A number of sections of the Wall have been carefully preserved. The area around Checkpoint Charlie (the crossing point for entry into the American sector of occupied Berlin) includes a number of different memorials about The Wall. The Checkpoint Charlie Museum provides an interesting overview of The Wall’s history – how events at the end of WW II (including the Berlin airlift), and post-war events, like the nuclear arms race, the Hungarian uprising and the Cuban Missile crisis, led to the building of The Wall. The museum includes an interesting and sometimes tragic account of the many escape attempts as well, and a moving display about the events the led to the Wall’s fall.

  9. Seurasaari Open-Air Museum (Helsinki, Finland): The Seurasaari Musuem is an outdoor Finnish culture and heritage museum located in Helsinki. The Museum’s collection consists of a series of buildings, homes, and churches transported from around the country to a wooded outdoor setting. There are similar outdoor museums in Norway and Sweden, but what makes the Finnish version so special is its location on rustic, heavily wooded island connected to the mainland by a narrow footbridge. The Museum, which is interesting enough, takes up only a small part of the island; the rest of the island is a beautiful, forested preserve, full of flowering plants and wildlife. When we visited, we intended only to stay an hour or two and wound up spending the entire day walking through the woods and along the island shoreline.

8. Warsaw Rising Museum (Warsaw, Poland): In August 1944, as the Soviet Army approached from the East, the Polish Home Army rose up against the occupying Nazi Germans. The locals anticipated that the Soviets would support their efforts; but instead, the advancing opposing army paused on the far side of the river. The last thing in the world Stalin wanted was an independent, effective military force in Poland. The tenacity of the locals surprised both the Germans and the Soviets, and the rising lasted longer than anyone anticipated. When it was finally suppressed, Hitler ordered that Warsaw should be destroyed, a task the Nazis completed with grim efficiency. Among the many terrible events in World War II, the Warsaw Rising may be one of the most tragic. This museum tells the story in great detail, emphasizing stories of the people who fought in the rising and how they were able to fight so effectively against a modern, well-equipped, professional army. If you go to Warsaw, you have to visit the Warsaw Rising Museum.

  Museo del Prado, Madrid

7. Museo del Prado (Madrid, Spain): The Prado is of course one of the most famous art museums in the world, very much in the same league of the famous museums in Paris in London that I deliberately left off this list. However, there is a very specific reason I included the Prado on this list. The Prado of course has an extensive collection of Spanish art, but much of it consists of portraits of overfed Habsburgs and Bourbons. What makes the Prado particularly interesting and worth visiting are the several paintings in its collection by Valazquez and Goya, particularly the exhibit of Goya’s Pinturas Negras (Black Paintings). Goya painted this group of 14 dark, haunting, obscure paintings on the walls of his home. The paintings were never intended for public exhibition, but they may be among the most interesting (although also arguably disturbing) works of art you will ever see anywhere.

    Museum of Occupations, Tallinn

6. Museum of Occupations (Tallinn, Estonia): Estonia’s 20th Century history was complicated and eventful. During the Second World War, the country was first overrun by the Soviets, invaded and captured by Nazi Germany, and then invaded again by the Soviet army. Following the war, the country remained a part of the U.S.S.R. until 1991. The Museum of Occupations explores this complicated, difficult history using video footage, photographs, interactive technology, and an extensive collection of artifacts. The museum provides deep insight into the country’s difficult 20th century history. Among other things, it really helps you understand what the country has accomplished to achieve its current stability and prosperity.

  Vasa Museum, Stockholm

5. Vasa Museum (Stockholm): The Vasa Museum houses the Vasa warship, which foundered and sank on its maiden voyage on August 10, 1628. The ship sat at the bottom of the harbor in Stockholm for centuries until it was salvaged more or less intact in 1961. You might not think a badly designed sunken ship would make for much a museum, but the museum is actually really interesting. There is of course the recovered ship itself, but what makes the museum so interesting are the exhibits showing how the sunken hull was located on the harbor bottom and how it was brought to the surface, as well as how the unique conditions in the Stockholm harbor preserved the hull so well.

4. Vikingskipshuset/Viking Ship Museum (Oslo, Norway): The Viking Ship Museum houses three more or less intact Viking ships that were recovered from excavated burial mounds in Norway, as well as a trove of Viking artifacts collected from around the world. It is quite an experience to see first-hand how massive the Viking ships were. You can only imagine how terrifying it might have been for a fleet of these huge ships to appear on the horizon. The exhibits explain how the ships’ sturdy construction allowed the Vikings to range so far across the seas. The exhibits also show just how far afield the Vikings roamed. This museum is relatively small and compact but a very interesting place to visit.

    King Shivaji Museum, Mumbai

3. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya/ King Shivaji Museum (Mumbai, India): The King Shivaji Museum is the principal museum in Mumbai. The museum itself is interesting in its urban context; the museum and its grounds are something of an island of calm amidst the chaotic kaleidoscope of Mumbai’s sometimes overwhelming sights and sounds. The museum’s collection includes vast array of art and architecture from throughout India’s history. The museum has a particularly interesting collection of artifacts from Indus Valley Civilization, as well as of other relics from ancient India in the time of the Guptas and Mauryas. The archeological exhibits include an extensive sculpture gallery including religious art from throughout India’s history. The museum is in effect an entire curriculum on art, history, culture, and religion on the Indian subcontinent.

    European Hansamuseum, Lübeck

2. European Hansamuseum (Lübeck, Germany): The Hanseatic League was a commercial and defensive confederation that thrived in Northwestern and Central Europe between the 1100s and the 1400s. For much of its history the League was based in Lübeck, which for a time was one of the wealthiest cities in the world. Lübeck is now home to the European Hansamuseum, an absolutely terrific museum that opened in May 2015. The Museum makes very creative use of technology to explain the League’s history, and to show how the League’s members overcame problems of language, currency, piracy, and geography to establish a thriving trade business across northern Europe. The museum includes interesting exhibits on how the League used flexible dispute resolution mechanisms to avoid deeper problems, as well as how cultural, social, and religious trends followed in the wake of the League’s activities. An interesting museum about an interesting time in European history.

    Gutengberg Museum, Mainz

1. The Gutenberg Museum (Mainz, Germany): The printer, inventor and publisher Johannes Gutenberg best known for introducing movable type printing to Europe was born in Mainz and established his first printing press there. The Gutenberg Museum includes original copies of many of his first printed products, including several of his famous bibles. But this museum is about so much more than what Gutenberg did and accomplished. The museum in effect represents an overview of the entire history of printing, and not just in Europe but around the world. The museum’s fascinating collection contains many interesting exhibits including a number of early printing presses, as well as interesting displays explaining the changes and improvements in printing technology over time. This museum is an absolutely fascinating place.

  My list of museums might be interpreted to suggest that while I travel I devote myself exclusively to improving activities and high-brow entertainment. In truth, from time to time when I travel, I sometimes take advantage of the opportunity to, say, have a beer. There are a number of great places to enjoy having a beer. Here is my list of the top ten places to enjoy a beer.

  10. Temple Bar (Dublin): The Temple Bar district in Dublin is just off of the Liffey River, near Trinity College. The area’s cobble-stone streets are lined with pubs, cafes, and restaurants. There is actually one bar called Temple Bar, but there are many other great bars in the area. Many of the bars have live Irish music. The area can be quite touristy but if you make your way into the side streets, there are some places that aren’t quite as full of American college kids. Just find a place you like and have a Guinness. It is great fun.

  9. Köln/Cologne (Germany): Cologne is the only city where beer that properly calls itself kölsch can be made. It is a delightfully light and refreshing beer, traditional served in small cylindrical glasses of only a few ounces. Throughout the old part of the city, there are numerous atmospheric pubs where the traditional local beer is served. Servers make their way around the tables, replacing empties with full glasses, marking the number of glasses consumed with a pencil mark on your coaster. The full glasses will keep appearing until you put your coaster on top of your empty glass, signaling you have had enough. For anyone that enjoys beer, Cologne is an absolutely mandatory destination.

      8. Bratislava (Slovakia): In recent years, Bratislava’s old town has been beautifully restored. At the heart of the old town is Hviezdoslavovo námestie (Hviezdoslav Square), a long shady plaza with several fountains and lined with restaurants and cafés. The plaza is about as pleasant a location for a morning coffee or an afternoon beverage as you will ever find anywhere. The pedestrianized streets leading off of the plaza are lined with renovated buildings and more restaurants and cafes. On the quiet side streets, there are a number of quiet sidewalk cafes. Have a seat and enjoy some of the excellent Slovakian beer.

      7. Holland Park (Singapore): Because Singapore is located just 80 miles from the equator, it is warm there every evening. There are a number of great areas in the city to go out in the evening. For example, along the Singapore River there are a number of quays that have been re-developed with restaurants and bars. One particular place I enjoy going out for some food and a beer is the Holland Park area. There is a huge indoor food court area serving a wide variety of food. Along the main streets are a number of sidewalk cafes where you can sit and enjoy an evening beverage while the world goes by. On one visit, I compared the vibe to the feeling in an American college town, during the summer. Relaxed and easy.

  6. St. Pauli (Hamburg, Germany): The St. Pauli district is a much livelier and a little bit rowdier place to go for a beer. The main street running through the district, the Reeperbahn, is lined with bars and restaurants, but from my experience the best places to go are on the side streets. The St. Pauli district is not for everyone; the city’s redlight district is located in an adjacent side street, and the Reeperbaum itself has some downright seedy establishments as well. Just the same, the area’s street life is lively and interesting, and the many bars in the area (or at least some of them) are great places to enjoy a beer and maybe watch a football match.

  5. Prague (Czech Republic): Prague is a great city to visit. It has many well-preserved historical buildings. It also has a great night-life. There are a lot of bars throughout the central district. I found that I preferred the quieter streets in the Malá Strana on the far side of the river. There are a number of quiet cafés without door seating along the canal. One place I particularly enjoyed was the Restaurace Velkopřevorský Mlýn, a quiet, shady canalside café, where we enjoyed some of the excellent Staropramen beer, which has its brewery along the river, right in Prague. There are a number of other excellent places along the canals to enjoy a beer on a quiet afternoon.

  4. Schleusenkrug (Berlin, Germany): There are a lot of great places to enjoy a beer in Berlin, but one of the best places to have a beer, in Berlin or anywhere, is the Schleusenkrug, located in the Tiegarten, the city’s massive park. The beer garden’s sun-dappled tables sit in a quiet courtyard under huge mature trees. The establishment has a peaceful, calm area, perhaps in part because it can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. Quite a number of families with children seem to favor the place. A great place to have a quiet beer and a bit of traditional German food.

    3. Place de la Contrascarpe (Paris): Paris is of course famous for its sidewalk cafes. I think most people picturing themselves sitting at a sidewalk café might also imagine a glass of wine at their elbow. However, most sidewalk cafes also serve beer, and sitting at a sidewalk café with a beer and watching the endless Parisian parade is an excellent way to enjoy an evening in the city. There are a number of great areas to sit at a table and enjoy watching the evening crowd. For example, one area I like is the Rue de Buci, a particularly lively street in the 6e arrondissement. But if I had to choose one place in Paris to go for an evening beer, I think I would choose the Place de la Contrascarpe, a quiet square in the 5e arrondissement that has the feel of a village square. Because of its proximity to La Sorbonne, the crowd tends to be younger, livelier, and interesting.

  2. Anglesea Arms (London): There are a lot of great pubs in London. In fact, having the opportunity to enjoy a pub is one of the great reasons to go to London. I have a long list of pubs in London that I like. I could in fact write a blog post just about my favorite London pubs. But if I had to choose one, I would recommend the Anglesea Arms, on a quiet residential street near the South Kensington tube station. This traditional non-chain pub, unusually, has an outdoor seating area. On a warm spring evening, it is great place to sit and enjoy the crowd of locals, and watch the neighbors stroll by.

    1. Chinesischer Turm (Munich): There are a lot of great beer gardens in Munich, but on a sunny day, my favorite is the Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower) beer garden, in the center of the Englischer Garten, Munich’s largest park. The beer garden surrounds a pagoda-style wooden tower, where oompa-oompa bands sometimes play. On a sunny afternoon, as many as 7,000 people can sit in the dappled sunlight under huge Chestnut trees and enjoy the excellent local Hofbräu beer.

On Thursday 26 January 2017 I had the privilege of attending a Masterclass at Red Hill Academy in Nottingham, thanks to my involvement in the HE+ programme. As you may have assumed by the title of this post, the focus of the masterclass was what could have happened and how the world would differ now if the first World War had ended at Christmas 1914. Overall, it was an incredibly enjoyable afternoon and it was clear that the lecturer was really passionate about the topic. Best thing, in my opinion. You could be talking about the amount of hair your grandma lost yesterday and, so long as you felt strongly about it, I would spend hours listening. I will not talk at length about the reasons behind the First World War or the battles that were fought and who won and who lost, but I will mainly focus on speculating and making hypothesis, analysing why the war did not end at Christmas 1914 but dragged on for almost four more years.

Officially, England entered the First World War on the 4th of August 1914 and played a fundamental role until its ending, on 11 December 1918. Our lecturer pointed out how saying 1566 days of war has a much greater effect than saying four years. 1566 of fighting, pain, blood and deaths. Men and women pointlessly perishing, their lives cruelly ended by a conflict they were not ready for, that was professed as bound to be over “by Christmas”. To dive straight into the matter protagonist of the lecture, it is to analyse the state of things by December 1914. Thousands had been killed and the war was an ongoing conflict mainly fought in new realities known as trenches, corridors dug in the ground, to remain hidden and launch offences. 400 miles of trenches ran between France and Belgium: Germans on one side and French, Belgians, British on the others. Between them: no man’s land. The war had provoked the death of the professionals and many were pushing to end the war; pope Benedict XV begged for peace and British women, suffragettes, sent “open Christmas letters” to German women. However, the most mesmerising of things what was developed in the mud, desperation and suffering: fraternisation. Soldiers, deep down in opposite trenches, armed and in the cold, started making friends. The trenches were quite, as if pacts had been agreed between the fighters. When food came, when the weather was bad, when the enemy needed another person to play bridge. Records of this fraternisation exist and warm hearts. A British soldier put down in his diary how a German sergeant went over to their side to ask how they were doing. On the 7th of December 1914, Charles De Gaulle wrote of French desire to leave the enemy in peace. Singing competitions were frequent and banter, banter, banter.

Christmas day: 100,000 British and German soldiers were involved in the truce. Little Christmas trees were put on the parapets, little presents were shared and a concert was planned. Words describing Germans calling for truce, a British soldier putting his head up and going in no one’s land to shake hands with a German friend. Shared cigarettes and sketches of soldiers that had been barbers cutting the enemy’s hair and football matches and buttons and temporary laughter. However, not everyone took part in the Christmas truce. This is one of the reasons why the war did not end there and then. Some soldiers skeptically and spitefully looked at the truce (a major example being Adolf Hitler himself) and many died when others were singing carols – Huggins Sergeant T.E. Gregory. Secondly, officers were furious, not prone on allowing what was no less than mutiny and quickly they went on using military discipline to get the men back fighting. Understandably, soldiers could have, after those exchanges, refused to battle any longer, derailing the fragile tracks of war. Therefore, we can say that the war did not end for these two main reasons: not everyone was involved in the truce and the officer victoriously reacted fast enough. After that, the war took a turn that would have never allowed for such possibility of peace to be even thought of. The introduction of gasses took away from soldiers that personal relation that direct combat creates. No human relation or compassion or common desire came with gas, only destruction and cruel survivals.

Now that we have identified why a peace may have happened and why it did not, it is time to speculate. Firstly, I want to raise my hands flagging that once you start looking and the past, moving little dowels and placing them in a different place, there is no end to its consequences. It is a never-ending cycle of mutations, smuggling in cracks and crevices. However, it is great fun, especially when you touch at such major matters such as a world war. To begin with, the most obvious consequence would have been an increase in the world population: only Britain and its colonies lost one million men and thousands more were lost, never found. Apart from this, though, we have to look at Russia and at the Communist revolution of 1917: Lenin was helped by the Germans to go back after the exile and it is likely that he would have found so much harder to push for that drastic revolution to happen. Our lecturer underlined how, in his opinion, Russia would have probably developed in a constitutional monarchy, had Tsar Nicholas II had enough time to realise how he should have approached the situation. Moreover: Adolf Hitler. If WWI had ended at Christmas 1914 surely Germany would not have had to undergo the harsh reparations it had to after the Versailles Treaty, consequently the German people would have not stagnated in such a terrible crisis and as history teaches, when people are desperate they turn to extremism, namely – in that case – nazism. On Thursday, we stopped there with our speculation on Hitler and Germany but, really, we could then go onto the II World War itself: it is likely that that would not have occurred, had Hitler not gained power. Furthermore, we observed at the Austro-Hungarian Empire, concluding that it probably would have evolved in a federal country, like America is. Also, the British Empire may have retained some of its colonies: in fact, WWI cost the UK such an incredible amount of money that 1) they could not afford to battle colonies seeking independence and 2) most of those had made such major contributions in the war that it did not seem fair to deny them freedom. Another point can be made regarding the fate of France. As we very well know, extremist governments developed, after the First World War, in Italy and, especially, Germany. Indeed, this latter country was the one the most suffered because of post-war reparations: if the war had ended at Christmas 1914, it very likely that such far-right dictatorship would have developed, instead, in France, because of disappointment caused by the hypothetical outcome of the war. Obviously, then, inventions that the First World War required in order to be fought would probably have been invented years and years later: a clear example are weapons such as bolt-action rifles, capable of firing ten or more rounds per minute. Also submarines, tanks and warplanes would not have ben developed at that time, mainly because there was no need for them. The final point I feel like bringing up as a potential change that the premature ending of the First World War might have caused is Europe, this idea of geographically close areas coming together as an economic and popular unity, to support and push each other. In my opinion, it would have developed far earlier, if the changes we have just analysed had occurred. Without the harsh relationships that WWI left between some of those powers that currently are at the heart of the European Union and with the slightly minor chance for a Second World War to begin so soon after, countries would have probably thought about making closer ties way earlier.

To conclude, I have to say that the lecture was incredibly entertaining, well put and made me think a lot more about why our world is how it is and how it could have drastically changed if only things had gone differently at Christmas 1917, one-hundred years ago.

Thursday, 28th November/Friday, 29th November 2019 – Hamburg

We always aim to go somewhere that has plenty of Christmas markets, and plenty of other things to see and do as well for the first weekend in Advent, and so this year we headed to Hamburg, in the North of Germany, for our “get in the mood for Christmas” trip.

It’s a city I have some history with, having been a few times including my first trip abroad in 1966 when I was despatched via BOAC to stay with my aunt, Lottie, who lived there, for the six weeks of the summer holiday. I was 7 years old and had my own passport, and my parents drove me all the way to Heathrow, handed me over to the airline staff, and picked me up again 6 weeks later. I was keen to have another look at a city that I last saw 30 years ago, a week after the Berlin wall fell, when it was the logical place for my parents and I to meet our relatives from the East who were able to travel west for the first time in my life. So… history… I wondered if I’d recognise much and was keen to find out. First we had to get there of course. A noon flight out of Heathrow was perfect timing, and having booked Club Europe tickets (only marginally more expensive than Economy) we had lounge access at the airport, fast track security, and were well looked after on the flight out too. The meal provided was very good, and the Champagne was generously supplied.

We landed on time and didn’t have to wait too long for our luggage, and were soon out of the airport and swinging into a cab for the short-ish ride to the city. We could have used our Hamburg Cards, but if we don’t have to, we prefer not to wrangle luggage on and off public transport. As we would later discover, it would almost certainly have involved the Number 6 bus, because as far as I can tell, everything did! It took slightly less than 30 minutes to get to the Crowne Plaza Hotel, and we were soon checked in, with an upgrade thanks to my IHG Ambassador membership. There followed around an hour attempting to find anywhere to put anything! The rooms have been recently refurbished and I don’t think it’s for the better, personally. In the room we had there was a small wardrobe for hanging things, and not a single shelf or drawer for anything that can’t be hung, like, say socks. It was utterly infuriating in a “first world problems” sort of way. We ended up parking stuff on the narrow ledge that ran from the tiny desk space round the side of the room, Lynne put stuff under her bedside cabinet, and I used the floor under the tiny table beside my bed. I really wasn’t amused and it’s a shame that they’ve done this… A social media rant later revealed that this is now a common complaint, especially among my female friends who travel for business. Perhaps whoever designs these things should be made to spend a week in a mocked up version of whatever they are considering, in possession of a week’s worth of stuff, and see how they damn well like it!

Eventually we got organised, and cleaned up, and decided that we’d pop to the bar for our welcome drinks. The bar proved to be very welcoming, and the staff were superb. Friendly, engaging, keen to help, which is all you can hope for in hotel staff. A drink or two and we were due to head out for dinner at TYO TYO, of which more in a separate post.

On Friday we treated ourselves to a latish start, and had a very good breakfast in the hotel, at least once we’d got the hang of the coffee machine, we did. The cups are too small for the latte/cappuccino options, and I didn’t realise immediately that there were larger, glass mugs available for those. It’s the sort of thing you want to be obvious when you’re coming in for breakfast, because until you’ve had coffee, nothing is obvious! After that we headed out into the Sankt Georg neighbourhood, which is interesting it its own right, to walk to the Kunsthalle, having been told we really should not miss it, and being advised by the guidebooks that we should spend as much time in there as we could spare. They said it would be rewarding; they weren’t wrong! If anything, they understated their case substantially.

The Hamburger Kunsthalle is is one of the largest museums in Germany, and was founded in 1850. Today, it covers seven centuries of European art, from the Middle Ages to the present, with a focus on North German painting of the 14th century, paintings by Dutch, Flemish and Italian artists of the 16th and 17th centuries, French and German drawings and paintings of the 19th century, and international modern and contemporary art. Needless to say it also runs a variety of exhibitions, and you could probably lose yourself in the complex of three buildings for an entire weekend. The museum began life as the “Städtische Gallerie”, run by the Hamburg Kunstverein, which was founded in 1817. The collection grew with donations, and purchases, and they quickly needed a building to house all the works. The original red brick Kunsthalle was built between 1863 and 1869, financed largely through private donations and it has grown, and grown from there.

The Kunsthalle is divided into the Gallery of Old Masters, the Gallery of 19th-century Art, the Gallery of Classical Modernism and the Gallery of Contemporary Art, and in a sense of linear solidarity we started with the early works of which they have a very healthy collection, including some mighty fine altarpieces, which is not surprising in such a rich city. The museum website highlights the works of the masters Bertram von Minden, who seems to have spent most of his life in and around Hamburg, and whose work I was much taken with, particularly the Buxtehude altar piece and this, which is from the Petrikirche in Hamburg and dates from 1379 to 1383. It’s huge and phenomenally detailed and definitely rewards close study.

As if that wasn’t enough, they have works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, in particular a portrait of the three electors of Saxony, (the rather wonderfully named Frederick the Wise, John the Steadfast and John-Frederick the Magnanimous), and Hans Holbein the Elder, and we made our way through the rooms admiring the works, and thinking we maybe should have picked up the audio guide (though if we had we’d probably have needed even longer to get round).

After we’d dealt with them, we moved on to a rather fabulous collection of drawings by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn – to give him his proper name – in an exhibition entitled Rembrandt, Masterpieces from the Collection. The Kunsthalle has around 300 Rembrandt etchings which belonged to the art dealer and collector Georg Ernst Harzen (1790–1863), who bequeathed them to the City of Hamburg in his will in 1869. I suspect we’ll be seeing some of them again in Oxford in January next year, but that in no way detracts from the sheer joy of getting up close to some of these incredible works. It’s amazing what can be done with just a few apparently scratchy lines, is all I can say! There turned out to be another roomful of these amazing treasures downstairs in the basement, and I could have happily spent a large part of the day taking in the details.

Of course, we already knew about Caspar David Friedrich, but I’d not seen any of the paintings it real life before. When you hit the section on German Romanticism, there’s a whole roomful of them, including the especially well known “Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer”(Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog) from 1817. It’s so famous it even appears on a piece of Hamburg street furniture close to our hotel, and while it’s regarded as his masterpiece, I’m not so sure.

Personally I was more enamoured of “The Sea of Ice” in terms of atmosphere, finding it to have something oddly futuristic about it.

Failing that, however, the piece I would steal is this one of church ruins near Dresden, “Kirchenruine Oybin”. The light is so special and so magical.

By now we were in need of a break, having had nothing beyond a coffee since breakfast, so we found our way to the basement and the café Das Liebermann, where we were soon in possession of much-needed cake. The Cube would have been a better choice perhaps, but we’d been informed that it was closed for a special event of some sort, so cake it was.

Fortified by cake (and somewhat disappointed to later discover we could have had soup or a wurst) we set off back into the collection, moving ahead in time to the turn of the last century and promptly tripping over the first of a series of works in the 100 Years of the Hamburg Secession – Encounters with the Collection exhibition, scattered throughout the galleries with other works from the same time period. I knew about the Viennese Secession, but the Hamburg group was new to me, and I was especially interested to see the work of a number of women artists prominently displayed, including Alma del Banco, Dorothea Maetzel-Johannsen, Anita Rée and Gretchen Wohlwill.

After we’d finished there we needed another quick sit down, before heading over through the Modern Art section (via Francis Bacon, Max Ernst, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso et al) to the Impressionism exhibition. On the way though I was much taken with this humourous Picasso owl which just made me smile so much – though it does seem that in addition to knowing some funny looking women, and men, Pablo also knew some funny looking owls.

The Impressionism exhibition in the newer part of the museum, which you get to by tunnel. Here the display was of masterpieces from the Ordrupgaard Collection, which I had not heard of but which I think I now need to check out. The collection, which is state-run, began with paintings collected by businessman Wilhelm Hansen and his wife, Henny in the late 19th century. The collection contains works by all of the leading Impressionist artists from Camille Pissarro, by way of Édouard Manet, and Claude Monet, to Pierre-Auguste Renoir and the rest, including a group of eight paintings by Paul Gauguin. It is obviously an impressive collection, even with just a selection on show in Hamburg so I think it may need to be seen.

Feeling somewhat exhausted by now, and realising several hours had gone by, we headed back outside and decided to walk down to one of the Christmas Markets not far away. We settled on the Weisser Zauber on the Jungfernstieg, the promenade that runs along the Binnenalster. The stalls are all white and are quite upmarket and swish, and I managed to buy myself a new wallet because mine is now falling apart, and a new pair of fleece lined dark blue leather gloves as despite having packed in an organised manner, and having a 64kg luggage allowance (!) I’d managed to forget my gloves and hat. We decided we’d stop for a gluehwein, which should have been relaxing, but no one told the Hamburg seagulls, which are an absolute menace. When one dive-bombed some poor bloke for whatever it was he was eating and skimmed straight past my face to do it, we figured we’d best drink up and move away.

I wasn’t any keener on the seagulls after we spotted one eating something that turned out to be the wing of a pigeon… Lovely. We soon forgot about that though as we walked through the delightful Alsterarkaden, a charming arcade built between 1844 and 1846 after the Great Fire of 1842 took out the old town and made way for new developments. The design was the responsibility of Alexis de Chateauneuf (1799-1853), the architect who was born in Hamburg and whose work can also be found in Paris and Oslo. It’s full of rather swish cafés, and very posh shops including this upmarket rum establishment, and again reminds you that there is money in Hamburg (it has the largest number of millionaires in all of Germany).

It also overlooks the Rathaus square, which has its own Christmas market, and which we would take a closer look at on another day. It was time to wander back towards the hotel, investigating a couple more markets on the way, one of which was selling the paper lampshade stars we like to use at this time of year.

We also stuck our noses into the Pride market, but although the DJ was in full swing, and the glitterball was reflecting off the pink reindeer, it was far too early for the clientele and there was hardly anyone there. We walked back along Lange Reihe and stopped off at a small wine shop to buy a bottle of wine before returning to the hotel to shower and change ahead of dinner at Wolfs Junge.
