MIDNIGHT CINDERELLA MEMORIAL POST

The Midnight Cinderella app will be closed on Monday August 26th, 2024 (5 PM JST). The English version was actively updated from 2014 to 2021 when Cybird announced the ceasing of operations for MidCin, but the app remained accessible until today. I'm sure I'm not the only one who mourns the loss of it even after all these years of discontinuation, so I wanted to put together a post to properly say goodbye to it. Trying my best not to make it all too sappy - I'd rather look at it as a show that reached its final episode. Some things might be left unresolved but in the end, you remember the cast and the emotions they made you feel more than the actual plot. Nowadays there arguably may be better titles by Cybird out there, but for me, the simplicity of MidCin was what made the details so memorable.

1. VIDEO - POV: You're playing Midnight Cinderella (for 10 minutes)

The 10-minute version (without sound) is accessible via the link above (opens in Google Docs) This one I was really excited about recording! It's just your normal day playing midcin, I'm sure many will find it nostalgic and comforting. You log in, claim your daily bonus (I used the chance to do a present box reveal, 90+ items, many of which you might recognize from route grace checks), play the garden gacha (in my case, I used up all the points I had accumulated, 7800 which equals 39 solos), do your princess lessons, change your avatar, greet your friends, read 1/5 of today's free story parts, check the ranking and your stats, look at your memories directory. The video has no sound, as the game wouldn't let me turn it on (you will see me try to do so throughout the video...) but later on I got it to work so I recorded a one-minute video (the one imported above) of me replenishing stamina just for those iconic sound effects that you either loved or absolutely couldn't stand the volume of, haha.

2. A Midnight Cinderella playlist (spotify link)

While I wasn't there for the early days of midcin, the songs I associated with the game almost always captured this very specifically nostalgic 90s-10s period, you'll see what I mean. Many of those are taken from 8track playlists dedicated to Midnight Cinderella, and if I'm not mistaken you can still look at what is left of them if you search them up. Others are just my very random interpretations of the route stories and the characters.

3. Fic recommendations

We have a lovely community of creatives and there are still so many works left behind which you can check out on the tags! But especially for fics I wanted to list some that truly touched me during the years (all links open in ao3) -

i'm on fire and its NSFW bonus scene bloodstream by a deleted user - words are not enough for this one. It's like it meant more than Nico's whole route for me at one point, and the songs are forever in my heart as Nico songs...

MidCin Works by DBMidCin (SoftSen) - ALL of these. This is my go-to collection of writings for midcin when I start to miss the game, it has a little bit of everything. The headcanon of Giles teaching his girls French for instance is one of the things I still remember reading like it was yesterday!

Bedroom Etiquette (NSFW) by RubyLeeRay - Because this is the dream. Doing something forbidden with your tutor Giles is the ultimate fantasy, I swear. I just love it.

It ended up being just something you daydream in detail about while in the car, but that's alright. I could at least share my vision with you! I went to read what I could of chapter 4 of Rayvis' route, using my last two chapter tickets as well, thinking it won't make me cry. And then I'm hit with those familiar things.

So let's close this with a word about the things that never change in the universe of Midnight Cinderella.

Stumbling down the grand staircase and right into the arms of somebody. Escaping the palace at midnight with Nico's help. Sitting at breakfast with Giles giving you your schedule for the day. Nico's teasing little smile as he accompanies you everywhere and listens to your relationship troubles. The way he's just a little suspicious at times. Finding Robert painting in the garden of Wysteria palace. Going to the room of your chosen suitor for the first time and meeting a pet there. Leo teaching you history and politics in his office. Dance lessons with Louis. Needing those dance lessons because King Byron is coming to Wysteria and a ball is going to take place. The bureaucrats being unhappy with you as a princess elect, no matter what. Galloping on a horse with Alyn who just protected you from an enemy attack. Getting information from a certain flirty merchant at a bar. Albert bickering with Nico, Sid teasing Louis. Being introduced to Archduke Herneit at Stein castle. King Byron appreciating the night sky. The sight of your yellow and orange princess elect room where on the large bed with its blue bedframe and tall see-through canopy you lie awake and think about the events of the day and how would a wise future Queen of Wysteria deal with the current situation. But ultimately you fall asleep, hearing the melancholically beautiful sounds of a violin coming from somewhere deep within your dream, and leave it all to the following day.

i have what is probably a really obscure question - back in the day when 8tracks was a thing, there was a sweat (acid soup) mix that i THINK you made + posted, with a cover of LOVEFOOL. i'm trying to find that particular cover of LOVEFOOL. do you know which it was?

okay so this has driven me CRAZY bc i REMEMBER what ur talking about, but i cannot find it at all. i tried to do some basic sleuthing, like poking around searching at my twitter and stuff, but all i find from then is 1. scattered evidence of a few ppl being like "ira what the hell is this demonic cover of lovefool" and 2. me gloating about how i only found said demonic cover of lovefool through like a 45 minute google rabbit hole. not helpful, past ira. also, i must have downloaded it at some point to upload it to 8tracks, but that would have been like, two laptops ago and there's no way i can dig up the file.

anyway i got a bit closer by digging a little more -- i have this kind of hazy memory of literally just typing in something like "cool lovefool cover" and trawling list articles, and when i tried to recreate it i found this meanspirited little vice piece with a description that i am like, 99.9999% SURE IS REFERENCING THE VERSION WE'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!!! ...but unfortunately bc it's from 2012, all the embeds are gone/broken (and as far as i can tell there's no remnants of links even when i inspect the page, tho i'm not very tech literate when it comes to stuff like this so maybe i'm missing something):

and as we can see here, even back then, if this was the cover we're thinking of, it wasn't attributed or traceable. but we do glean a LITTLE info from this: "under six minutes" means it was five and change, and it must have been uploaded to soundcloud at least 11 years ago.

i tried trawling thru soundcloud w those parameters in mind but couldn't find it... unfortunately i think there's a high chance the original account that uploaded it doesn't exist anymore. (i may have missed something, like maybe a different account has re-uploaded it and i scrolled past it bc i was looking at upload date, but expanding the search to any year is something i don't have the bandwidth for rn!!)

this might be a workable amount of info to at least go to reddit or something with? i feel like there must be at least one subreddit that's specifically dedicated to "help me find this obscure soundcloud remix that got deleted." but for now i'm afraid i must admit defeat, which sucks bc now that you've reminded me of it *i* really wanna listen to the decade-old demonic cover of lovefool too :')

I just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed your mixes over the years. They really helped to define an age of the internet for me that is coming to an end. And of course introduced me to so many new artists I now love.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! The years of 2010-2013 were such a fun, exciting time to be finding and sharing new music, and it really does feel like we'll never experience that sort of thing again, it was a moment in internet culture that can't quite be replicated in today's more algorithmic landscape.

I miss using 8tracks to share those mixes, but that site is sort of a shitshow at this point, and I think my account there has been hacked once or twice in the past few years. Someone even changed my avatar (so weird, why would they do that?!), and since I can still log in, you'd think I could change it back...but it won't let me! And there is literally no tech support or customer service or anything like that available. Anyway, I am still interested in finding new music, but back in 2010 or so, I was very lonely and very sad and had a lot of free time on my hands. Nowadays, I am happy to listen to other folk's playlists and mixtapes and let them find all the new stuff! Two newsletters I love for new music are: New Bands for Old Heads and Hauntology Now!

In honor of trying to focus on things that give joy in the next few days: would you be willing to go into what it is you love about opera & tips for things to look for that a noob might miss? I've seen a few & I've found them mildly interesting, but I also feel like maybe I'm missing context or knowledge or perspective to appreciate them more!

Yes!! Mwahahaha, yes!! Thank you for such a great ask.

The thing that I love first and foremost about opera is that it's theatre. I was lucky to grow up regularly attending plays at a university theatre, musicals at community theatres or one that came through on tour, and opera. These experiences were all of a piece in my mind, you just adjusted how much music there was!

I think, at least for me, that the key to really enjoying an opera is finding ones where you are both interested by the plot and really taken with the music. The first opera I ever loved was Carmen, and it's because every time I hear that overture I go YOOOOOO. If you're looking for a starting place, there's a lot of Best Of collections of famous pieces from famous operas, and you can always give one of those a listen and see what jumps out to you, then go check out the whole opera. When I was in college I used to always put on a playlist like that while I was getting ready to go out (rip 8tracks you are MiSSED) and when I was getting back into opera I went "hey I used to do my eyeliner while listened to the overture to Barber of Seville, maybe I should go watch the whole thing."

Something I really love about opera is that it's about feelings--just big feelings all over the place, and so I kind of let my feelings guide me when I'm engaging with a piece, if that makes sense? My appreciation of a production rests in large part on how it makes me feel. I like watching different productions of the same opera (we're not going to get into how many different productions of Marriage of Figaro I've watched in the last two weeks) because my familiarity with the plot and the music allows me to pay a little more attention to the theatrical side of things--the acting, the staging, the setting, etc. That goes back to the whole "opera's a type of theatre" mentality I had from the start.

i really miss when 8tracks was popular bc i found so much cool music and i loved seeing people's custom mixes with pretty covers and nice little descriptions. it was like experiencing a tiny radio station or a little piece of hand-curated art. i loved it so much.

When Trigun: Stampede came out, my mind was rocketed back to the early 2010s when I would watch the original anime with my sister and dad. I remember how much we loved the opener (we never skipped it) and the idea of a goofy, sort of useless guy who could become hyper-capable at the snap of a finger. The space-western bait-and-switch was also really cool to us. Check this playlist out if you're looking for some groovy rock with a gentle slide into blues (or if you just miss 8tracks)

smthn i really like about gibson--which is easy to forget, what with [waves hands at hickey's whole thing]--is that he's the one to start the mutiny. seriously, go back and watch the beginning of ep7-- he's the first to express Doubt in the captains' plans, specifically doubting that fairholme's party is coming back with help and that the natives would be friendly. over the course of the episode (and ep8) it spirals into a bigger thing, more of an active mutiny than simply taking supplies and striking off on their own in order to move faster, but gibson was still the spark here. hickey does not have the monopoly on bastard actions in that relationship and it makes them more interesting.

i got really attached to tom hartnell when i saw that poll that was like "which of the characters would you most like to work with" and i realized that i've actually worked with several tom hartnells before, which is to say, young well-meaning dudes who fuck up on occasion but earnestly try to make it better once they realize they've fucked up, and i'm like yeah :) i'll have tom hartnell on a job site any day. pick up a coffee for him on break when it's cold. swap the aux cord in the work van. he'd tease me for being old but also listen to my advice. look when i went back to trade school i was in a class of almost entirely dudes straight outta twelfth grade and i wound up adopting most of them as honorary baby brothers ok???? don't @ me
